Our seven-year-old came to us recently with a thoughtful expression etched on his face.

“In the olden days, was everything in black and white?” I paused, taking in the news that my child considers his father and I to be from the “olden days”.

“Like television?” we asked. Upon a little digging it became apparent that after seeing black and white photos, he had come to the conclusion that the entire world may have once been in grayscale. So began a conversation about the evolution of technology and how photography could now capture minute detail.

“Things are different now,” he mused.

considered the height of technology. And, when a teacher wheeled in the box television and VCR, we thought all our Christmases had come at once. In comparison, my son’s class is currently experimenting with little robots and learning about coding. Technology is advancing at lightning speed.

Thirty years ago, our career options were simple. I wanted to write books on a typewriter. Today’s youth have a plethora of options awaiting. Biotech, nanotech, agetech, data science and digital health are some of the growing sectors. There will be jobs available that we haven’t even thought of yet.

The big quit COVID has made so many of us reassess our lives and careers that it has led to the ‘great resignation’ trend in the US, but is this being seen in Australia? We find out. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

H

as the pandemic made you rethink your work-life balance? If it has, it turns out you’re not alone.

As the ongoing COVID pandemic continues to mount pressure on jobs, employers and employees, a new trend is emerging around the world dubbed the ‘great resignation’.

Largely impacting the United States, the trend has emerged as workers rethink their work-life balance and opt out of a current job for a role more suited to their lifestyle.

According to recent statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, across the US the monthly resignation quit rate has climbed from about 2.4 per cent in 2019 to 2.9 per cent in August 2021 – the highest rate ever recorded.

So what does this mean for Australia, and indeed the Sunshine Coast?

Many local employers, particularly in the retail and hospitality sectors, are struggling to hire or maintain staff and expert career consultant Kate

“The COVID-19 reset has given people the chance to re-evaluate what they want from their life as a whole, including their career,” Ms Langford says.

“They’re realising what’s important to them and are no longer willing to stay in a role if they feel like they’re being treated as a number, not a human.”

Ms Langford says she is seeing more people than ever, especially those in high-level roles, approach her for assistance.

To retain staff, the Birtinya-based consultant recommends employers look at flexibility, culture and job satisfaction.

“People will thrive when they are working in their genius zone, so employers should be checking in with staff and asking them how they’re feeling, what they are enjoying and what they aren’t,” she says.

“If you have a great worker, it’s also important you fit in with their lifestyle in terms of working hours – if they can only do school hours or three days a week that’s better than not having them at all.

“We are no longer a society where everyone goes to the office from 9am to

5pm. We have evolved past that and those who aren’t already embracing this change need to start to.”

While the Sunshine Coast is experiencing mass migration from southern states, Ms Langford does not believe this will help the local job market, as the pandemic has caused a work-from-home shift.

While it is yet to be seen what the

impact of the great resignation will have in this country, recent data reveals resignation rates across Australia are in fact falling.

The University of Melbourne’s Mark Wooden and Peter Gahan recently published an article on The Conversation suggesting Australia will not fall victim to ‘the great resignation’.

According to the article, data collected each year by the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggests that in the 12 months to February 2021 almost 1.1 million Australians left their jobs.

That is not unusual. In most years more than a million Australians leave their jobs, and leaving or changing jobs is a sign of a healthy, well-functioning labour market, the article reports.

If Australia has had a problem, it is that fewer and fewer are quitting, something Treasury officials are identifying as a contributor to low growth in both wages and productivity.

In the year to February 2021, the proportion of Australian workers switching jobs fell to an all-time low of 7.6 per cent, down from a peak of 19.5 per cent in 1988-89.

It seems rather than a great resignation, Australia is experiencing more of a ‘great resistance’ in workers returning to the office.

Possibly more important will be how employers manage workers who became accustomed to working from home during the pandemic. As seen in the US, many workers might be reluctant to return to the office. As other researchers have shown, there are good reasons to expect working from home to stick and to expect workers to have a stronger preference for mixed arrangements than many managers might like.

Our jobs of the future COVID-19 may have spearheaded ‘the great resignation’, but it has also shone a spotlight on future industry and growth. In this ever-changing world, the Sunshine Coast’s established and emerging industries are primed for success.

A

ustralian demographer Bernard Salt envisions the Sunshine Coast in 2040 as an area economically re-shaped by the creation of the new Maroochydore CBD, the expanded airport and the university hospital.

He suggests a community populated by digital champions, entrepreneurs and start-ups in the biotech, nanotech and IT business sector.

“The results will be a Sunshine Coast that is not just bigger, but also younger, more highly educated and entrepreneurial,” Mr Salt says in a report titled The Activated City: Imagining the Sunshine Coast in 2040.

The Sunshine Coast Council future vision agrees with much of the report, predicting that by 2033 the local economy will double and by 2041, the creation of 100,000 new jobs can be expected in seven key industries – health and wellbeing; education and research; knowledge industries and professional services; agribusiness; aviation and aerospace; clean technologies; and tourism, sport and leisure.

Some of these new jobs are already here and others are yet to come. There has been a 23 per cent increase in the economic value of agriculture over the past decade with the region now recognised as one of the most dynamic locations for new food in Australia.

Demand in this sector, which includes the everexpanding production of artisan beverages, is expected to grow significantly from Asian markets with the advent of free trade agreements with Japan, China and Korea.

Here in Queensland, the demand for artisan beverages has inspired the creation of distilleries and resulted in the emergence of more than 20 craft breweries.

One of these businesses is CAVU Distilling, which is behind the Sunshine & Sons brand of spirits. The enterprise opened in 2020 and is now thriving.

The CAVU Distilling team Matt Hobson, Daniel Vinson, Adam Chapman and Michael Conrad Founder Matt Hobson left his long-term airline career to pursue his dream with co-founder and best mate Michael Conrad. Mr Hobson says he was lured to the Sunshine Coast with the promise of a lifestyle that could easily mix, “growing families, business and a brand”.

Importantly, the location offered the ability to combine agriculture and manufacturing with direct access to local ingredients.

The enterprise launched on Australia Day with the aim of producing Australia’s finest spirits and with the ambitious tagline: ‘Not the makers of Australia’s finest rum – yet.’

“A wink to our not-so-humble ambitions in the rum category,” Mr Hobson confirms.

Despite the challenges of 2020 and 2021, Mr Hobson says the company is experiencing spectacular growth,

including opening the popular distillery door visitor experience and establishing supply of its product to Australia’s largest liquor retailers.

“It’s been onwards and upwards for sure,” he tells My Weekly Preview.

Proving that this no idle boast, the business is about to release Australia’s first 100 per cent certified organic rum.

Syncing with its penchant for quirky names, this product is aptly named Nil Desperandum, which is Latin for ‘nothing to despair’. And according to the owners, the title expresses the more contemporary and laconic Australian saying of ‘no worries’.

Mr Hobson says sourcing sugar cane grown organically is a difficult undertaking and until recently Australian organic sugar and organic molasses (the product left over from sugar refining) was not available.

“However, when it did become available we jumped on it. We can now proudly claim our distillery is accredited

by Australian Certified Organic,” he says.

The organic rum will be released on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

“A nod to Australian rum being required by law to be aged in wood for two years,” Mr Hobson adds.

Advanced technology including digital solutions to meet the needs of an ageing population, and recognition of mental wellbeing, are just two of the keys drivers in this area. To support new business and employment in the health industry, the council delivers the SunRamp health technology accelerator program. This program focuses on supporting late-stage start-up health technology businesses and assisting them to scale up, and capitalise on the capability of the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network.

The new businesses include industries around: Agetech – improving the lives of the elderly through technology such as smart home devices, wearables and enabled home care, mental health tech – including apps and monitoring, telehealth, corporate wellness and e-treatment; and digital health – the use of technology, communication, services and processes in healthcare.

Sunshine Coast initiatives in this area include: Medifarm – Australia’s first licensed medicinal cannabis cultivation, production and manufacturing facility, Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute – world-leading research and suicide prevention alliance, Wandi Nerida – the first residential eating disorder facility in Australia, and Vitality Village – a collaborative integrated care facility with a unique business model.

DID YOU KNOW? Based on projections from the Federal Government, nurses are expected to become the fastest growing occupation by 2050. The Sunshine Coast Health Institute, a partnership between the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, USC, TAFE and Griffith University, provides tools and training to develop and improve the skills of doctors, nurses, allied health.

The education and research sector is predicted to become the Sunshine Coast’s second largest employer by 2033.

This is the result of major capital investments that will require a highly skilled and educated workforce across all of the region’s high-value industries. Demand for educational services is predicted to grow by up to 50 per cent between 2013 and 2033. In 2018, the education and training sector provided more than 12,580 jobs and contributed $1 billion to the Sunshine Coast’s economy.

Sunshine Coast Council predicts the following to be the top three careers by 2025.

Data scientist – analyse significant data to understand and predict consumer behaviour. May involve specialisations such as maths, statistics, modelling, medical science and engineering. Large demand for this career will be found in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and health precinct. Computer systems analyst – these experts ensure organisations’ technological needs are met and are improving with advancements and demands of the increasingly connected world.

Demand for this career should be present at SunCental Maroochydore, Aura and Oceanside developments, to name a few. Software and app developer – designers and programmers who create software applications, apps and augmented reality and virtual reality. Demand for this career will be found in many start-ups, international firms and local business and organisations.

Sunshine Coast University senior lecturer in history and futures, Dr Mark Bussey, says COVID-19 accelerated the penetration of communication technologies into work, allowing many of us to work from anywhere. “Pre-COVID this was already happening but at nothing like the scale it is today.”

Dr Bussey predicts these decentralised work patterns, along with local industries using the Sunshine Coast’s high speed broadband connectivity, will amplify cyber-work.

Point Duty Cyber security, a business focused on unstructured data collection, data enrichment and integration helping produce high-quality intelligence, moved to the Coast in 2015.

Duty Point managing director Stan Kaine says the business relocated its base to Maroochydore from Tasmania, to take advantage of a larger IT resource pool.

Since then, the company has grown from eight to 40 people. “We have some locations in the UK, US, Egypt and Tasmania but the main workforce is in southeast Queensland,” he says.

In line with this, in June 2020 Sunshine Coast Council landed a Cyber Security Innovation Node. The node is designed to deliver increased cyber security capability, talent and education programs across the region, as well as fast-track cyber security exports internationally.

It is estimated the national cyber security industry has the potential to almost triple in size over the next decade, with revenues expected to increase from $2 billion in 2018 to $6 billion by 2026. It supports priority industries, including defence, medtech, mining technology and services, advanced manufacturing, food and agriculture.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says high-value initiatives such as this will generate exciting new employment and industry development opportunities that will underpin our region’s economy.

A

popular waterfront cafe in Caloundra is making a world of difference to the lives of vulnerable children around the globe, clocking up a heart-warming number of child sponsorships thanks to the generosity of customers and staff.

Lindsay Ross-Gilder and his wife Jane have owned La Promenade Cafe at Bulcock Beach since 2009 and in that time have advocated for helping those in need. They recently notched up 50 sponsored children through World Vision.

This, as well as a mammoth $500,000 worth of donations over the years, was made possible with donations in the cafe’s tip jar, which the Ross-Gilders then match

• More than two million children and adults were supported by Australians through sponsorship.

• Child sponsorship costs $48 per month and supports education, safe drinking water, health, food and agriculture and income generation.

• Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, World Vision has assisted 54.3 million people.

La Promenade Cafe staff Brianna Lynch and Chauntelle Ross-Gilder with Lindsay Ross-Gilder from their own pocket. “That’s been our number one priority – to help the less fortunate children,” Mr Ross-Gilder says.

“The customers of ours who come day in and day out, with their generosity they spend their money with us and in turn we are able to spend money with World Vision and the other charities we help as well.

“My staff and the management are very eager to do what we do and without their help we wouldn’t be anywhere. All the tips that we collect … go into the funding for

their children. We make up the rest from what we put in from our pockets.”

La Promenade has raised more than half a million dollars for various charities over the past 12 years, including World Vision, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Mercy Ships and Catholic Mission.

Mr Ross-Gilder’s yearning to help began when he was working in the airline industry. Visiting vulnerable communities and orphanages in India, Zimbabwe and Thailand, he gained first-hand experience

of poverty. “I saw the way things are, and the way things should be – that’s why I want to keep that circle of giving alive,” he says.

“A lot of time around the world in third-world countries, people can’t even get a clean drink of water. When I see water being wasted down the sink, straight away I think of these people in other countries.”

The 50 sponsored children are spread across 13 countries in Africa and Asia.

“There’s not a corner of the world where the past year and half hasn’t been tough,”

NEWS he says. “But while it’s hard here, I know it’s even harder in countries that don’t have the health systems or infrastructure that we are lucky enough to have here.

“Lockdowns have led to huge loss of income, long-term school closures, increased child labour, early marriage and, in too many cases, severe hunger.

“A lot of these people don’t even have their COVID shots. So that’s going to be another problem.”

Mr Ross-Gilder hopes other businesses will start a similar project. “To everyone in the region, I wish there were other people who would come on board and do what we do.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s one child or 10 or 50, somebody is getting something from it and that’s what we want to see. If we could all get involved and give a little bit from here and a little bit from there, it would make a wonderful difference.”

Sponsoring a child for $48 per month can help provide education, safe drinking water, food and agriculture, and health services, and assist them generate an income.

A day to honour our veterans

T

oday marks Remembrance Day across Australia where veterans past and present, their families and the community come together to acknowledge those who have bravely served our country.

This year, more than 40 World War II veterans and the Maroochy RSL family will pause at the Cotton Tree Cenotaph to commemorate and remember.

It will be a special day for Australia’s longest-serving RSL member and Buderim local Jack Alsbury, who will celebrate his 100th birthday in January next year.

Mr Alsbury served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) from 1942, as a leading aircraftsman, in the New Guinea theatre of war. “In 1944 I was nominated to be a member of the RSL by my father who was already a member after having served in the First World War, so this year I have

While there is much from the war he would like to forget, Mr Alsbury will always remember proposing to his late wife, Dorothy – who also served in the RAAF – via a letter he wrote while in battle.

“We were married as soon as I returned home in 1944, both in our RAAF uniforms because at the time materials were hard to come by. After the war, we settled in a little town in Melbourne called Mordialloc, then in 1982 we moved to Evans Head in New South Wales, before deciding to call Buderim home in 2003.”

Maroochy RSL president and veteran Michael Liddelow says after the 2020 commemoration events were limited, this year will be significant for the community.

“We don’t underestimate how

important Remembrance Day is for our veterans – irrespective of their age, where they served or how long ago they returned home,” Mr Liddelow says. “Services such as this … ensure our veterans feel appreciated for the sacrifices they made and for many, form an important part of a lifelong connection to the RSL.” Mr Liddelow says the Maroochy RSL team is aware of the key role it plays in the lives of Mr Alsbury and the many veterans who call the Sunshine Coast home.

“The Sunshine Coast is currently sixth on the list in Queensland as local government areas with the most veterans and the fourth highest in regard to the number of war widows,” Mr Liddelow says.

“Remembrance Day is an opportunity for veterans who have served over a number of conflicts to congregate with the friends and families who have supported them on their journey and to reflect. It provides a unique opportunity to stop, to remember and to say thank you.

“On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of warfare, bringing an end to the First World War and seeing this day come to represent all those who have served before and since.”

The commemoration will begin at 10.30am at the Cotton Tree Cenotaph.

Former model Sheree Johnstone has fashion in her blood, and she’s channelling her love of styling with a new service for her Sunshine Coast customers.

F

ormer international catwalk model Sheree Johnstone has fond memories of her mother Robyn advising boutique customers about body shape and style.

At the time, Ms Johnstone was a primary school student sitting at the back of her mum’s store in Mooloolaba, Robyn’s No.8. But it’s an education in fashion she will never forget.

“Mum lived and breathed her work for all those years,” Ms Johnstone says.

“For 27 or so years, she had Robyn’s No.8, The Lily Room and Abby’s, which was sold to the current owners of Zambezee.

“She had such a following on the Coast and her customers just loved coming to her for her advice, her honesty and the product that she had in her store. I learned that, and I just developed a natural talent where I would go along buying with her.

“She would test me: ‘Oh, what would you pick?’ It turns out I had quite an eye for picking out styles that we thought clients might really like and I developed a passion for it.”

Ms Johnstone, who signed with agency June Dally-Watkins at the age of 15 and has

graced catwalks from Germany and Greece to Japan and Hong Kong, had her own taste of this special relationship with customers when she owned her Unseen boutique in Mooloolaba at the age of 21.

Now she hopes to continue that with her new personal styling business.

Unseen Styling is an idea that began only a few months ago but is already gaining momentum as clients seek to tap into Ms Johnstone’s extensive knowledge and experience in the fashion industry, which has also included travelling Australia for David Jones and modelling alongside the likes of Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale.

Ms Johnstone had launched and closed her popular boutiques including Unseen Bazaar, Sesheke and Burnish to spend more time with husband Jamie and children Beau, now 15, and Leila, 11. But something seemed to be pulling her back into working with clients.

“It was something I just felt I needed to

do and having that time away, I soon realised that I was missing having the store and missing serving and styling my customers,” Ms Johnstone says. “Former clients and customers, if I bumped into them, would regularly tell me they were missing me styling them and my store.

“These sort of things kept happening and I had a light-bulb moment where I thought, well, maybe I could still style my clients and help them with their confidence, knowing that they had my honest advice, my opinion, my specialist knowledge on fashion, on trends, on their body shape, what suits them, and help in that way without having a bricks-andmortar store.”

This personalised service creates a two-way exchange that can be a very emotional experience.

“It’s just the positive comments and the emotion that I feel from my clients when they find an outfit or a few different styles

and they feel great about themselves,” she says. “That’s very rewarding for me. That’s why I love it.

“Those comments remind you that you have a place in your clients’ life and they really appreciated your help because they felt great. I have clients that bought things from me that I styled on them years ago and they still have those items. They’re still much-loved items.

“You can go and have very little to no service when you’re in the change rooms in some stores or you can have service but you don’t really feel comfortable you’re being given honest advice. The person in that store is just focused on selling you products in that store.

“I will be working for my clients. I won’t be aligned with any stores at all.

“And a personal stylist can take the common occurrence of the stress and the hassle away from the shopping experience, working for the client to give them honest advice and tips, which in turn can save time and money spent on items not worn and help you dress on trend while still staying true to you and who you are.”

Ms Johnstone also offers a wardrobe auditing service for those with clothing and accessories they don’t know how to style, or pieces they never wear and probably could do without. “They need help with someone like myself to come in, go through their wardrobe with them and see what should be kindly given away to another loving home and what things can be added if need be or how to mix and match.

“A lot of people don’t know how to wear a top or what style they should wear that top with.”

NEWS No More Fake Smiles raised a further $6812 at its second anniversary fundraiser on October 30, where the winner of the 1.21-carat diamond was announced.

The diamond was donated by Sunshine Coast resident Karen Lazare, while jeweller Vanessa Nock of Uniqueness Designer Jeweller donated $5500 for the winner to have the diamond made into a piece of jewellery.

Mooloolaba resident and avid My Weekly Preview reader Vivien Marsh says she was speechless to win “the most amazing diamond” she has ever seen. She plans to have it made into a ring.

“I like to get involved in local charities when I see fundraisers in the magazine,” she says. “I wanted help this cause as I think it is important to be able to help children. To win this was absolutely surprising. You support these causes because you want to help, you never think you will get something in return.”

Ms Morris says the money raised from the My Style luncheon, as well as the birthday event, will support six children through therapy.

“The money goes into providing therapies for child victims, and also advocacy work in the justice system on behalf of children.”

As the charity continues to gain momentum, No More Fake Smiles

recently announced its first ambassadors, Sunshine Coast Grammar teacher Ben Princehorn and writer Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane, to help spread awareness and continue the charity’s work at a grassroots level.

“It’s about raising awareness and building No More Fake Smiles in community so more people can come on board,” Ms Morris adds.

“Our ambassadors will help us to raise that awareness and help to have more happening within the community.

“Over the next 12 months it will keep the trajectory going to raising that awareness with community, holding fundraisers with us as the recipient, and hopefully we have more happening in schools.

“That’s where Ben comes into it. He had a team run in the Sunshine Coast Marathon wearing our shirts and raising money.”

A garden to soothe the mind and soul Interactive exhibition explores the links between art, mental health and wellbeing.

L

ife begins the day you start a garden – this old Chinese proverb is ringing true at Caloundra Regional Gallery, where people are starting afresh through the creation of floral art.

Healing Garden by Japanese-Australian artist Hiromi Tango invites visitors to take a breath, slow down and be uplifted with mindful art making, as well as adding their own contribution to the evolving garden.

Hiromi has trained staff and local art practitioners in the creation of paper and textile flowers, buds, leaves and vines, who pass those skills on to gallery visitors.

At the end of the exhibition, the garden will be complete. The result? A vibrant flowing garden created by the community, embodying the collective mindfulness of its creators.

The exhibition explores the many ways in which nature, colour and art-making can influence a person’s wellbeing and mental health.

For the past 10 years, Hiromi has been researching how communities can connect and heal through art. For her healing garden projects, the artist notes that the slow and repetitive actions of folding, wrapping and categorising colours to make flowers have been found to contribute to overall feelings of wellbeing, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety and depression.

Hiromi Tango: Healing Garden is presented alongside I Sea U exhibition, both on show until 5 December.

I Sea U, presented in partnership with Horizon Festival – horizonfestival.com.au – is a stunning black and white portrait series by photographer Keith Hamlyn, who documents his subjects’ collective connection to the ocean.

Entry to the Caloundra Regional Gallery is free. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and weekends 10am to 2pm.

SAVING OUR CINEMAS Caloundra’s film lovers can once again get a ticket and some popcorn at the beloved Strand movie theatre. WORDS: Shirley Sinclair

M

ovies will once again grace the big screen in Caloundra, courtesy of a young man with experience from the candy bar to management.

This will be welcome news to the community as the closure of the local favourite earlier this year caused a public outcry. Movies had shown in the tourist town’s main street since 1931.

The person behind the revival is Luke Warburton and he aims to reopen the doors of the rebranded Strand Cinema Caloundra this month, taking the rundown picture theatre and revamping it into a much-loved community asset.

“From the very get-go, we have to bring

something new, exciting, fresh for the customers to return,” he says. “We wanted to open with a fresh look, so we’ve got the new logo coming, new website, all new ticketing system. It’s all happening.

“In this cinema alone, we’re doing all new lighting, all new curtains, all new surround sound, all new screens.

Everything in here will be new except for the carpet and the chairs. In the other cinemas, all new screens, all new speakers, painting.

“Probably after Easter next year, we’ll put in the order for seats.”

The former Big Screen Cinemas has been closed from July 22 temporarily, due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

The refurbishment work on the five-cinema, 500-capacity venue began on October 22 with rubbish removal and electrical work. Painting started on October 28.

With the revamped Strand Cinema Caloundra, Mr Warburton says he is committed to creating a high-quality movie experience, with great customer service that is value for money and will see customers return. The popular $10 one-price-ticket-for-all will remain – this is less than half the price of some general admission movie tickets for latest releases elsewhere.

He says patrons won’t need “to take out a home loan” to afford candy bar prices either, starting with popcorn from $3. He adds the movie schedule for 2022 is “absolutely packed” after COVID pushed back the release of many titles in 2021, creating a Christmas school holidays movie bonanza.

The 30-year-old, who also owns The Bribie Cinema, is first and foremost a movie fan and has spent most of his working life beneath the big screen.

“I worked in cinema as a teenager,” Mr Warburton says. “I started from the bottom: candy bar, projection, Gold lounge and management towards the end down in Sydney for the Reading Group. Then I worked on the Gold Coast for a couple of years at [Reading Cinemas] Harbourtown while I also did five years in radio.”

Strand Cinema Caloundra will open Wednesday night, November 24, with the latest blockbuster from the Marvel franchise, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

At least two cinemas will operate from November 25, with two more opening the following week before the school holidays.

WHARF ROADWORKS Locals and visitors will soon have safer access to The Wharf Mooloolaba, with the car park to be resurfaced between River Esplanade and the road in front of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast.

“The car park is heavily used by beach goers, customers to The Wharf complex, riders and walkers to the marina and surrounding businesses, and the car park asphalt and pavement are showing signs of wear and tear,” division four councillor Joe Natoli says.

Stage one works on the western parking area will begin early November and stage two works on the eastern parking area will start from late January next year.

“The Wharf precinct will remain open throughout the maintenance and council will be doing all it can to complete stage one works by early December 2021 and will pause for the school holiday period,” Cr Natoli says.

“Some minor stormwater and drainage works will be undertaken during the day and will result in changed traffic conditions, while most of the resealing and removal of ageing pavement will be undertaken at night to facilitate the day use of the car park.”

WISHLIST DONATES TO CALOUNDRA CLINIC Locals awaiting eye treatment will now benefit from almost $70,000 worth of equipment delivered to the ophthalmology department at Caloundra Hospital.

Wishlist has purchased six vital pieces of investigative and treatment equipment to enhance treatment and slash waiting times at the Caloundra eye clinic.

The spend adds to Wishlist’s $430,000 contribution over the past 10 years – thanks largely to the 2011 House the Coast Built – now totalling an incredible half-a-million dollars of donations.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the latest equipment will help hundreds of patients, from children with squints and traumatic eye injuries to adults with retinal conditions.

“In total, $68,831 worth of equipment has now been delivered to Caloundra Hospital’s Ophthalmology Unit to help diagnose and treat patients with vision issues,” Ms Rowe says.

Caloundra Hospital ophthalmology clinical nurse consultant Belinda Vayro says the team is extremely grateful for Wishlist’s ongoing support to meet the surging demand services.

“Ophthalmology is a vital speciality within the Sunshine Coast Health Service,” Ms Vayro says. “The diagnosis of certain eye conditions or even an accident can totally change your life and the ability for you to see. We want to shine a light on our local service.

“The cryotherapy equipment is widely used in ophthalmology to treat patients with conditions such as conjunctival and lid lesions, trichiasis, pterygiums and patients requiring retinal cryopexy surgery.”

Each year, the service handles more than 1000 paediatric appointments, and more than 6000 adult appointments and assessments.

BUDERIM SWIMMERS LAP IT UP FOR CHARITY Members of Buderim’s adult swim squad are set to challenge themselves for a good cause as they prepare to swim as many kilometres as possible for charity.

From November 15, 80 swim legends from Swim Fit at Buderim Aquatic Centre will clock up the kilometres for RizeUp Australia, a charity dedicated to supporting families affected by domestic and family violence.

Adult squad coach Tracy Mitchell says it is a great opportunity for the swimmers to challenge themselves with the ultimate goal of making a difference to other people.

“Usually a one-day event, this year it is happening across a week’s worth of squad sessions and we run 13 sessions a week,” she says.

“I know some swimmers will try and

do five kilometres every session, which is a huge effort.

“You can do anywhere from three kilometres to five kilometres each session.

“It’s a challenge for themselves but they get the satisfaction of raising money for a charity.”

Ms Mitchell began the fundraising challenges 20 years ago and says thousands of dollars have been raised for various charities in that time.

“When we did our first fundraiser there was no platform, so we would collect cash in envelopes. I think our first year we raised $2500, which was a lot back then. As platforms have developed, we’ve been able to donate more.”

LOCK YOUR VEHICLES OR FACE FINES When Sunshine Coast Police locate an unsecured vehicle and speak to drivers it is not unusual for the response to be: “I didn’t know that was an offence”, but it actually is.

Under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation 2009 there are several offences around securing vehicles.

Two of the main offences that we see are ‘driver failed to remove the ignition key with no one over 16 years remaining with the vehicle’ and ‘driver failed to lock the vehicle after leaving the vehicle’.

Both offences have a $55 fine. While it may not be a hefty fine, there are other implications such as identity theft, stolen property and vehicle theft to consider.

Theft from, and also of, unlocked vehicles is an ongoing problem across the Sunshine Coast and yet is simple to reduce – if everyone secured their unattended vehicles.

Police and volunteers will often patrol carparks and streets, leaving notes for drivers identifying the valuables that have been left in their vehicles with a note saying ‘Lock it or Lose it’.

property left in vehicles. Tools and other work-related items are also commonly left unsecured.

Not only are vehicles being left unlocked, but we also see vehicles with keys left in the ignition!

The only thing missing is a note saying ‘please steal me’. Opportunistic offending is very common and the result of us not taking simple precautions to secure our property, including our vehicles.

Again, it is the cost, the inconvenience and the ongoing implications if your vehicle or your property is stolen. It could even affect your employment if you don’t have a vehicle to get to work or if your ID is stolen it could lead to identity theft.

Sunshine Coast Police ask all residents to help us reduce crime by taking simple precautions to secure your vehicles and remove valuables items.

Lots of great upgrades have been occurring around Bli Bli State School with paths, fencing and street upgrades making it safer for families and students to walk and ride to school.

I was recently lucky enough to share in an inspirational day with more than 300 Sunshine Coast students as part of the 2021 Kids in Action Conference – including students from Coolum State School.

Children from 21 schools in the Sunshine Coast Council regional area as well as Noosa came together with other like-minded kids in our community to spread knowledge, understanding and passion for the environment, the planet and sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who completed the Climate Survey. Council is looking forward to seeing the results, which will help to identify actions that the community and businesses are willing to pursue in the future to address climate issues collectively.

THERAPY CENTRE’S CHOIR FINDS ITS VOICE An Australian-first charity on the Sunshine Coast with a musical twist is hitting all the right notes thanks to a recent grant.

Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy (RHPT) has started a choir thanks to a $7800 grant from the federal government.

RHPT uses the power of music as a therapeutic tool to improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease.

Speech pathologist Louise Williams says she has seen this therapy change the lives of participants and their families.

“It is so rewarding to see choir members passionate about maintaining their voices and learning to speak, sing, and live with intent,” she says. “Our group therapy members tell us that participation in the program has been integral to staying motivated to continue their voice exercises – necessary to keep their voices strong.

“Singing has a range of benefits for people with Parkinson’s and they now have the tools that they need to make sure that their family and friends can hear and understand them.”

The work the charity does is something close to the heart of Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien.

“This fantastic local charity is not only restoring hope but is actively improving the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s and that of their families,” Mr O’Brien says.

“I know from personal experience the terrific impact this sort of treatment has, as my own dad had to live with Parkinson’s for many years.

“It was the tenth anniversary of my father’s passing in October, and it means a lot to me to be able to visit Restoring Hope and see the wonderful work that they do.”

The Reserve Bank of Australia believes the economic recovery is already back on track after the disruption caused by the Delta-variant lockdowns, but insists a hike in the cash rate is still some way off.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is also upbeat about the outlook.

“We’re in economic recovery mode. In fact, beyond that, we’re in growth mode,” Mr Morrison says.

The RBA, in its quarterly statement on monetary policy, says the economy is expected to have contracted by around 2.5 per cent in the September quarter.

“Now that vaccination rates are rising quickly to very high levels, and restrictions on activity have been eased significantly, the economy is recovering rapidly,” the RBA says.

“The speed of this recovery is consistent with the strong underlying momentum in the economy prior to the outbreak.” Growth is now expected to be a brisk 5.5 per cent in 2022. The RBA says unemployment is expected to steadily decline to four per cent by the end of 2023, but the cash rate will not rise until 2024.

he owner of two popular Asian-inspired restaurants has expanded his interests to the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Tony Kelly – who boasts Rice Boi at Mooloolaba and Giddy Geisha at Maroochydore – has just opened a similarly themed restaurant at Palmwoods.

He says the new eatery, called Piggyback, is inspired by his other two venues, but it provides a distinctive experience for visitors.

“We’ve invested a lot of time and resources to create a truly unique experience for diners and I’m really proud of what we have created at Palmwoods,” he says.

Family law – setting aside a court order

Company directors must apply for ID

There are limited circumstances in which you can ask the Court to set aside an Order dividing property, such as when fraud has taken place or there was a failure to disclose relevant information, or where it is now impracticable for the Order to be carried out. As was considered in the recent case of Demeny & Ogden, the circumstances must indicate a miscarriage of justice. The Court considered a situation in which the parties consented to final property Orders aiming to ensure an equal division between them.

The property pool included properties and debts. Unfortunately, the properties were sold for less than expected. This resulted in one party being liable for the remaining debt and an unequal division.

Initially, the Court ruled there had been a miscarriage of justice. However, on appeal this was overturned. It was decided the alleged miscarriage of justice did not occur at or before the making of the Orders; the Orders themselves were drafted so that one party received a set sum with the balance to the other; and the difference was not considered sufficiently significant.

This decision highlights the importance of drafting final Court Orders to meet your intention. In this case, problems may have been overcome by referring to percentages rather than fixed payments prior to sale prices being realised.

New and existing company directors will now need to apply for a unique director identification number in a move to prevent illegal phoenix activity.

To obtain a director ID, individuals must make the application personally and will be required to supply their myGov ID alongside two identity documents such as bank account details, ATO Notice of Assessment, or PAYG Payment Summary.

Existing company directors will be required to apply by November 30, 2022, while new directors appointed between November 1, 2021 and April 4, 2022 will have 28 days after their appointment to apply. Director appointments from April 5, 2022 will require a director ID prior to being appointed.

Failure to provide a director ID within the legislated time frames could mean criminal charges or civil penalties up to $1.11 million.

Unfortunately, tax agents and ASIC-registered agents are not able to apply for a director ID on behalf of their clients.

BRANSON’S BOLD GREEN PLAN FOR AUSSIE BUSINESSES Business leader Sir Richard Branson says there’s no political appetite for a carbon tax in Australia, but has proposed another way to get the nation to dump fossil fuels sooner.

The Virgin Group founder and climate action campaigner says Australia could require businesses to invest in emerging green technologies, based on how carbon intensive their activities are.

He says young entrepreneurs working on technologies that will help fight climate change will get access to a vast pool of money to research and develop their ideas and rush them to market.

And businesses would get their money back down the track, when those technologies begin to turn profits.

“It is difficult to persuade governments in Australia to levy a carbon tax,” Sir Richard told a climate-focused summit in Sydney, attended by hundreds of Australian tech entrepreneurs.

“But maybe something like a clean energy dividend, where every company puts aside a certain amount of money ... to invest in clean energy, depending on how much carbon they are emitting.

“They’d have the chance of getting that money back through their investments and if every company was asked to do that, enormous amounts of money would then be invested in Australia trying to create a clean energy revolution.”

Sir Richard called on Australian politicians to summon the courage to dump coal, and show what can be achieved when a green economic transition is properly supported.

“You just have to ask the politicians whether they’re going to be brave enough just to do it, and it obviously has to be done,” he told the Impact X Summit.

“Coal is the number one problem the world has.”

He said good governance in Australia meant creating new jobs for coal industry workers, something the UK and other countries had managed to achieve.

A difficult ordeal has taught Ashley Robinson the importance of family, friends and the good people of Bali.

choose to use public transport to get to work and I love it. I like the rhythm of passing out of my neighbourhood and through others, of being able to work or socialise on my commute because I am not in charge of a vehicle.

I like saying good morning to the bus driver and, sometimes, hello to the station master. I appreciate what is a predictable, efficient service.

But too many are taking the mickey out of the system and abusing the taxpayer’s dollar. Last December, Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey told an estimates hearings more than $25 million a year was lost to fare dodgers taking free rides on southeast Queensland’s public transport network. That is more than $68,000 a day. Holy moly.

I am witness to that stream of money dribbling out of the public purse, because almost every day I embark on my work journey someone travels on my bus or train for free.

It was startling when I first started taking notice, but now it happens so often it barely makes me blink. Most cheapskates don’t even look embarrassed, much less abashed.

On the bus, the fare evaders just tell the driver they aren’t paying and waltz on board. On the train, they just don’t line up like the rest of us who are armed with Go Cards we touch on or off. Simple, it seems.

Laws only work when they are respected and serious enforcement of this one has been let go too long.

The fine for evasion is $266 and there are only 60 network officers patrolling the whole of the southeast corner. Fare evaders know they are likely to get away with it.

A lot of the freeloaders are teenagers, who know they will not be tossed off because of the ‘no child left behind’ policy that came in close to 20 years ago in the wake of the Daniel Morcombe tragedy.

And too many of the other freeloaders are fully fledged grown-ups.

Such illegality should not be allowed to continue, and it is well past time to break the pattern. I say flood the public transport services with fare marshals. Patrol and police; rein in the thieves and get them to cough up – or change the system and make it a free public transport system for all.

If so many want to play this thieving, unfair game, maybe the time has come to adjust the field of play.

t the time of writing I am having a week away from work, which is the first time I have done so since February 2020.

That was when I was in Bali visiting my stepson Brendon who is in Kerobokan Prison serving a drug possession sentence. He was first arrested in August 2018 and I have been a regular visitor until COVID changed our lives last year. You wouldn’t exactly call my visits a holiday but way back at the start of this lifechanging experience a parent of another Australian prisoner told me that to make it bearable you need to at least make part of your visit a holiday.

I thought it was odd advice at the time but it was on the money, so for every visit I tried to have the weekend to myself (the prison is shut to visitors on weekends). I found that during the week I understood the prison system, the inmates and the visitors just a little bit better and on the weekends I understood the culture and the wonderful people on the island, which definitely gave me some comfort.

Of course this all stopped last year but hopefully I will be able to return in the new

year. However, this week I have been able to reflect what I have learned over the last three-and-a-half years. I have learnt that while I thought we as a family were in a terrible situation, I understand there are far more people worse off than us. I have learnt our friends and community have been amazing support and our family has grown through this ordeal. I have gained a family in Bali who have helped us – no, actually saved us – and Mahoyda and his tribe will always be an important part of our family and we are eternally grateful.

Brendon has just over a year to go and I look forward to getting over there again to see him and to going back and seeing the many locals I have got to know, from people that sell me stuff I don’t need but I feel their need is mightier than mine, to the guards and staff at the prison who have always treated me well.

I pray that Brendon stays safe and healthy. I realised last week I have to stop calling him a stepson and correct people that do, as through this whole saga he has stepped up and owned his mistakes and made me step up and own mine.

Sami Muirhead is getting nostalgic this festive season by rediscovering her passion for old-school dips.

D

ip. It is one of my favourite words, and one of my favourite pastimes. I refer to the gooey snack best smothered on Jatz crackers or shoved thickly into a cob loaf that will delight your digestive system.

The humble dip is having somewhat of a renaissance, with many fancy recipes doing the rounds, just in time for December. What is a Christmas gettogether without a litter of Eskies, some sliced up mangoes, plenty of ice in your wine, and a dip or two on a platter? My friend sent me a recipe for an artichoke dip with fennel and rosemary pickled radish.

No thanks!

My mum keeps trying to tell me my life is not complete until I whip up her new roasted carrot with hummus dip.

Mum. I love you. But it’s too fancy. Give me a good old-school corn relish dip any day. I know the corn of the relish is controversial, but I am a basic bogan at heart, even if I pretend otherwise.

There are two more dips to round out my top three of all-time list. They are the cob loaf. Yes, that trusty barbecue staple of the ’80s that to this day ensures smiles all round. If your friend avoids gluten and white fluffy mounds of bread, then you

need to find some new ones.

I teach my kids the rules of life when we share a cob loaf. The Hunger Games commence when it comes to who eats the last morsels of the dip and bread. The smallest kid is not shown any mercy. There is no ladies-before-gents rule. Nope! It is an all-out family fight to stuff your greedy face with cob greatness.

“There are two more dips to round out my top three of all-time list” And the best dip of all is of course the seven-layer Mexican dip. Bravo! It contains the seven food groups of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. Okay. Perhaps a Mexican dip doubles down on the fat and carb components and doesn’t have vitamins and minerals. But you know what it does have? Sour cream.

Corn chips. And five more layers to make the crankiest of critics feel full of sunshine.

So, turn back time this festive season with some dips from the golden decades.

PREPARE FOR FUTURE PANDEMICS, GATES WARNS

ill Gates has warned governments must prepare for future pandemics and smallpox terror attacks by investing billions of dollars in research and development.

He made the warning last week during a Policy Exchange interview with the chair of the UK Health Select Committee Jeremy Hunt. The Microsoft founder also called for the formation of a new billion-dollar World Health Organisation pandemic task force.

While the research may be expensive, he said it could lead to other innovations, such as eradicating flu and the common cold. He said that countries like the US and the UK must spend “tens of billions” to fund the research.

“I’m hoping in five years, I can write a book called, We ARE ready for the next pandemic, but it will take tens of billions in R&D – the US and the UK will be part of that.

“It will take probably about a billion a year for a pandemic task force at the WHO level, which is doing the surveillance and actually doing what I call ‘germ games’ where you practise.”

Mr Gates suggested the “germ games” could include preparing for acts of bioterrorism such as smallpox attacks on airports.

“You say, ‘okay, what if a bioterrorist brought smallpox to 10 airports? You know, how would the world respond to that?’ There’s naturally caused epidemics and bioterrorism-caused epidemics that could even be way worse than what we experienced today.”

DIVE INTO THE DIP

Despite the dire warning, the world’s fourth richest man also struck an optimistic note during the interview, anticipating the “incredibly beneficial” medical innovations that will come from increased funding for pandemic prevention.

“The nice thing is a lot of the R&D we need to do to be ready for the next pandemic are things like making vaccines cheap, having big factories, eradicating the flu, getting rid of the common cold, making vaccines just a little patch you put on your arm, things that will be incredibly beneficial even in the years when we don’t have pandemics,” he said.

He added he will continue to talk about pandemic preparedness as part of his work as a philanthropist. “So along with the climate message and the ongoing fight against diseases of the poor, pandemic preparedness is something I’ll be talking about a lot. And I think it will find fertile ground because, you know, we lost trillions of dollars and millions of lives.

And citizens expect their governments not to let that happen again.”

DON’T LIMIT YOUR CHANCE OF A BETTER PRICE Auctions are currently proving to be the best way to get the highest price when selling your home. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

T

here’s a good chance residential vendors can achieve much better results by choosing auction over private treaty and off-market to drive up a sale result.

By selling off-market or by private treaty, Jordan Barden of Define Property Group argues vendors limit themselves from reaching the broader buyer market.

It could mean a vendor ends up under-selling their home.

And in this exceptional market, every extra dollar on the sale price is going to be very welcome.

“With how hot the market is, you want everyone and anyone to see it,” Mr Barden says.

The speed of this market also means it’s difficult for agents to price a property.

By putting a price on a property a vendor establishes a ceiling. “If you go to auction, you take that away and you let buyers decide what it is worth on the day and in competition,” Mr Barden says.

“Usually, buyers will stretch past their budget and pay more than what they would have with a property listed at a price.”

“You don’t know how much more you could have got on the day” rate of 93 per cent during the last year proves the decision to sell this way is compelling.

The prelude to Mr Barden’s most recent sale of 3 Robertson Drive in Burnside was several separate offers – $550,00, $570,000 and $580,000.

“I was able to push one of those buyers up to $630,000 just before the auction,” Mr Barden says. The reserve was $590,000.

elling at auction is proving popular and successful, with more than 22 auctions held on the Sunshine Coast in the last few days.

The clearance rate for those auctions was 81.8 per cent with $22,309,500 of property sold under the hammer.

For those properties passed in, in most cases it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of bidders. For example, 11 Victor Street in Alexandra Headland had 12 registered bidders, 9/8 Memorial Avenue in Maroochydore had 18 and 8/51-55 Buderim Avenue in Mooloolaba had 15.

With interstate lockdowns for the most part being a thing of the past, the pent-up demand from particularly Melbourne and Sydney buyers for quality Coast stock hasn’t diminished, with many properties up for auction still attracting interstate interest while there was a very solid number of local and Brisbane buyers in the mix.

MAD CHASE FOR CBD TOWNHOUSE Do remember what your parents told you when you first discussed investing in property? It was probably ‘location, location, location’. Well, the two-bedroom townhouse at 8/5-7 Hinkler Parade in Maroochydore is a property your parents would have approved you purchasing.

That listing turned out to be the busiest Ms Rawson has worked on. “We had 136 buyer groups through the house physically,” Ms Rawson said. “I had buyers from as far flung as Hong Kong.”

The auction was a cracker Ms Rawson said, with one buyer flying in from Adelaide to attend.

The latest REA Group PropTrack’s report advises, “Beachside suburbs, especially those on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts have been among the strongest for price growth in the country”.

The sale on Saturday afternoon of the home at 17 Wilson Avenue in Dicky Beach exemplifies the sort of value that is being put into beachside suburbs.

A large crowd gathered to watch this auction of the historic house that has been in the hands of the same family for 65 years.

Listing agent Andrew Garland of Ray White Caloundra said 17 bidders from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast went head-to-head with an interstate buyer, pushing the price up well over the opening bid of $3,000,000.

At the drop of the auction gavel, it was a local Caloundra resident Wroxton Innes who secured Trentham for $4.8 million.

“It didn’t take long to get there; it was quite a quick auction,” Mr Garland said. “I think there was a lot of people registered who were shopping above their budget as it turned out.”

“I’m not surprised by the result,” Mr Garland said.

“A hundred per cent,” he said when questioned about the value of this property going to auction. “We had 17 people fighting it out.

“At the end of that process you can’t say that the best outcome wasn’t achieved. Anyone who says they would have paid more had the opportunity to

“With expressions of interest, they don’t know what their competition is doing.

There is always a possibility they might have paid more if they had known. So, from that perspective I think the auction maximises the result.”

BUDERIM ENTRY-LEVEL HOME PRICE SURPRISES Ray White agent Ellen Lorenz marketed the three-bedroom house at 2 Lee Street in Buderim as an entry-level home.

At the Saturday auction, in just 10 minutes and after about 20 bids from the 10 registered local and interstate bidders, the price moved up from $640,000 to finally sell under the hammer for $827,500 to an interstate buyer.

“It’s a fabulous result for an entry level home in Buderim Pines,” Ms Lorenz said.

“It’s getting a bit frightening when entry-level buying in Buderim is going for that much.”

“The buyer will use it as an investment initially,” Ms Lorenz said.

“However, they will look to move up when they can from Sydney.”

It was hard work for the auctioneer on Friday night at the sale of the glorious 33-acre rural retreat at 30 Sullivans Road in Eudlo.

For a good half hour, auctioneer Jake Loiero of Ray White worked with three bidders – one from interstate and others were local.

People were bidding $200 and $300 and $700 increments as they chased owning the six-bedroom house Mr Loiero said.

Sixty-one bids later and above reserve, the house finally sold under the hammer for $1.877 million to a local buyer.

Mr Loiero said it was a great result and reinforced the value of going to auction.
