When I think about my childhood, I picture the green fields beyond our backyard fence.

I remember driving in the dirt-laden farm truck with my dad. I feel the heat of the orange flames rising upward, and I smell the sweet and raw scent of burnt sugar cane.

My heart sings with memories of twirling, arms outstretched and palms upward to the sky to catch the soft black snow that would disintegrate upon touch.

My mum never liked the cane trash.

Even now, she recalls the constant cleaning; the black-stained washing on the line.

I laugh as my friend, who resides in north Queensland, makes the same complaint – a domestic worry I will never have living here on the Sunshine Coast.

smoke wafting from the mill chimney, are behind us. At one time, the Sunshine Coast was a significant player in Australia’s sugar industry. A combined 50 family farms produced around half a million tonnes of cane.

Today, there are about a dozen cane farmers who call the region home.

And while the Coast is a producer’s dream (pineapples, strawberries and macadamias are aplenty), our once solid sugar industry has slowed significantly.

This week, journalist Gail Forrer takes a nostalgic look back at the industry that was previously known as the Coast’s economic powerhouse. The story is on page 10.

any vaccinated people are concerned about the prospect of mixing with unvaccinated people. This mixing might be travelling on trains or at the supermarket.

But also at family gatherings, or at pubs and restaurants.

Some people are wondering, why would a vaccinated person care about the vaccine status of another person?

Briefly, it’s because vaccines reduce the probability of getting infected, which reduces the probability of a vaccinated person infecting someone else. And, despite vaccination providing excellent protection against severe disease, a small proportion of vaccinated people still require ICU care.

Therefore some vaccinated people may have a strong preference to mix primarily with other vaccinated people.

But what exactly is the risk of catching COVID from someone who’s unvaccinated?

Recent reports from the Victorian Department of Health find that unvaccinated people are 10 times more likely to contract COVID than vaccinated people.

We also know that vaccinated people are less likely to transmit the disease even if they

become infected. The Doherty modelling from August puts the reduction at around 65 per cent, although more recent research has suggested a lower estimate for AstraZeneca.

Hence for this thought experiment, we’ll take a lower value of 50 per cent.

As the prevalence of COVID changes over time, it’s hard to estimate an absolute risk of exposure. So instead, we need to think about risks in a relative sense.

If I were spending time with an unvaccinated person, then there’s some probability they’re infected and will infect me. However, if they were vaccinated, they’re 10 times less likely to be infected and half as likely to infect me, following the numbers above. Hence we arrive at a 20-fold reduction in risk when hanging out with a vaccinated person compared to someone who’s not vaccinated.

The exact number depends on a range of factors, including the type of vaccine and time since vaccination. But, in Australia we can expect a large risk reduction when mixing with fully vaccinated people.

The calculation holds true whether you yourself are vaccinated or not. But being vaccinated provides a 10-fold reduction for yourself, which is on top of the risk reduction that comes from people you’re mixing with being vaccinated.

So, dining in an all-vaccinated restaurant

and working in an all-vaccinated workplace presents a much lower infection risk to us as individuals, whether we are vaccinated or not. The risk reduction is around 20-fold, but as individuals, we need to consider whether that’s meaningful for our own circumstances, and for the circumstances of those we visit.

There are also added complexities, in that there are three vaccine brands available, and eligibility is still limited to those aged 12 and older. Although, we do know kids are less susceptible and less likely to show symptoms. However, as more information emerges, we can always update our estimates and think through the implications on the risk reduction.

Some people haven’t been able to get vaccinated because they’re either too young or they have a medical exemption. Other people are immunocompromised and won’t get the same level of protection from two doses as the rest of the community.

Increasing our coverage across the board will help protect those who aren’t fully protected by vaccination (whether that’s by eligibility, medical reasons or choice).

Those at higher risk also enjoy the risk reduction if they’re able to mix primarily with vaccinated people. And other choices we make can help reduce the risk of transmission when vaccination is impossible, for example, wearing masks, washing hands

carefully, and so on. Some people have proposed that frequent testing could be used to suppress COVID spread for those who are unwilling to be vaccinated.

Health minister Greg Hunt said Australians can buy rapid antigen tests from November 1, so they can test themselves at home or before entering certain venues.

So how much does a rapid antigen test reduce risk to others? To answer that question we need to consider test sensitivity.

Test sensitivity is the probability a rapid test will return a positive result, if the person is infected. It’s challenging to get an accurate estimate. But rapid antigen tests are about 80 per cent as sensitive as a PCR test, which are the traditional COVID tests we do that get sent off to a lab. The PCR tests themselves are about 80 per cent sensitive when it comes to identifying someone with COVID. So, if you did a rapid antigen test at home, it’s about 64 per cent likely to pick up that you’re positive, if you did have COVID. Therefore, rapid antigen tests can find about two-thirds of cases. If you’re going to a gathering where everyone has tested negative on a rapid antigen test, that’s a three-fold reduction in risk.

Even though rapid tests provide a reduction in risk, they don’t replace vaccines.

When used in conjunction with high levels of vaccination, rapid tests would provide improved protection for settings where we’re particularly keen to stop disease spread, such as hospitals and aged care facilities. Consequently, despite the high efficacy of COVID vaccines, there are still reasons a vaccinated person would prefer to mix with vaccinated people, and avoid mixing with unvaccinated people.

This is particularly true for those at higher risk of severe disease, whether due to age or disability. Their baseline risk will be higher, so a 20-fold reduction in risk is more meaningful.

The rise & fall of an industry H

ow far we have come.

More than 150 years ago, a generation of people travelled to the Sunshine Coast to farm land, hand-build simple timber housing and load their produce on horse-drawn wagons to get to market.

The contrast between settlers and contemporary Sunshine Coast residents in both lifestyle and landscape is far-reaching and considering technological advances, quite extraordinary.

Since those early settlers arrived, much of the area’s farming land has transitioned into housing estates.

There are still a few places where stretches of land survive to soothe the eye. Think crossing the Maroochy River and the view of the cane lands. These quintessential Australian landscapes are embedded into our psyches through songs and bush poetry, the words often inspired by views from the verandahs of old Queensland homes.

One of the region’s original farms can be found at Rosemount, near Nambour.

Today it is owned by Ross Boyle, grandson of Nicholas and Maria Boyle, who travelled from northern New South Wales with 10 of their 11 children in October 1921, to settle in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The couple immediately went to work growing small crops such as beans, bananas, pineapples and ginger.

They also cleared and drained the river flats to grow sugar cane.

Last month, Mr Boyle, who resides on the same land, commemorated the centenary of the family’s arrival with a get-together of about 100 family and friends. Additionally, he marked the family milestone with the installation of a dedicated garden and commissioned the painting of a mural featuring a cane train on one of the sheds.

Today, that same land is a turf farm.

However, special reminders of the original Boyle family remain.

Mr Boyle says his sister lives in the family’s original home, which is 100 years old, while the old workers’ barracks is used as an office.

After the 2003 closure of Nambour’s Moreton sugar mill, Mr Boyle moved away from sugar and turned to turf.

He says there was ‘no white knight’ to come in and save the sugar farm, although, later on a pilot plan to manufacture what became known as ‘cow candy’ (a food product from sugar cane to feed cows) was designed, supported and finally failed to come to fruition. “A lot of people lost a lot of money in that,” he recalls.

The Boyles’ story is just one of many that have shaped the character of the Sunshine Coast. Fortunately, the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Library has a

There was a time when agriculture dominated the regional economy, and towering fields of sugar cane represented the prosperity of farmers. Writer Gail Forrer takes a look back at the bygone era.

By the time the Moreton mill began operation in 1897, the cane industry was one of the major employers and in time provided work for cane cutters, harvesters, factory operators, chemists, train drivers and administrative staff.

In terms of cane cutting, the historical voices are similar. It was tough, dirty work

completed around snakes (eastern browns are noted in the area) rats and other vermin that brought with them disease risks. Besides that, there was the ever-present threat of a slash from the cane knife. Blisters were a constant problem and the men resorted to mutton fat, urine or Condy’s crystal to strengthen the skin on their hands.

Ross Boyle on the family property followed up by a front-end loader in the 1950s to make work a little easier.

In the 1960s a mechanical topper was developed and finally in the 1970s mechanical harvesting took off and most Sunshine Coast cane cutters could put down their knives. Sugar cane fires marked the start of the season and a fiery end to the vermin. The fires did not affect the sugar content, and for added measure had the benefit of removing dead, sharp leaves, which otherwise cut the cane cutters.

In 1985, Nambour Library’s Caroline Foxon interviewed local resident Tom Wegner who recalled his father growing sugarcane on their farm at North Arm. During the conversation, he describes how the sugar cane would be carted to the North Arm station and loaded onto a truck.

“Then the train’d come along in the night sometime, and then cart it down to the mill. Then the mill’d take it over from there and they get up to where they chuck it in the carrier by hand. Then if we wanted another the next day, well then they’d fetch another one back or fetch a couple back.

“We’d fill them as nothing else to do, see. Oh, it was a lot of handling to do.”

Also in 1985, an interview between pioneering descendant Fred Perren and Valerie Poole was added to the collection of local history. During the recorded interview, Mr Perren mentions he had an 1898 agricultural journal describing men from the DPI reporting on the sugar mill’s operation and specifically notes cane of ‘exceptional length’. This cane was received from Charles Perren’s farm.

It was sad day for the region in 2003 when the Moreton mill closed down.

For the Boyle family and many others it marked the end of an era. On that final crushing day, Mr Boyle stood sombre at the mill to watch as the last bin was

Crusaders returned to Europe from the Holy Land with prize of sugar, which they called ‘sweet salt’.

The first sugar cane arrived in 1788 in Australia with the First Fleet.

MILL The Moreton Central Sugar Mill company was formed in Nambour in 1894. The mill was built in 1895-96 and began operations in 1897. It closed in 2003.

CANE TRAIN It is estimated the first cane tram line was constructed in Howard Street in about 1897 where wagons of sugar cane were pulled to the Moreton mill by teams of horses.

Council heritage records also show another use for the cane train. “In 1910 it was not an easy journey for Christmas holiday makers from Nambour to the popular Salvation Army camping ground at Cotton Tree. A cane train ran daily from the sugar mill to Petrie Creek, where a flotilla of motorboats was ready to convey the passengers and luggage down to Maroochydore. But alas!

The rain came down in torrents and played havoc with this arrangement in 1910 – a bridge had been washed away and the train could not run, the boats went adrift and in others the engines went on strike.”

It was just like being at a funeral. It was a very sad day.”

Thinking back to the days before the closure, Mr Boyle says some of his favourite memories include the cane train winding through town. For others, like this writer, it is the sickly sweet smell of molasses, the sound of the train’s whistle and the dark soot from fires that dusted the town that bring back memories.

THE INDUSTRY TODAY November was traditionally a time when the Sunshine Coast’s crushing season would start to wrap up. It was a time when our skies were coloured burnt orange with the flames of the season’s end. Today, it is a rarity to see black snow fall, but when it does, it brings back memories of times gone by.

When the Moreton mill closed sugar cane production in 2003, it significantly affected the region’s farmers. In what had been the indomitable industry of the Coast, our farmers once produced more than half a million tonnes of cane annually, but this has dwindled to around 60,000 tonnes. To put it in perspective, Australia produces between 30 to 35 million tonnes of sugarcane each year.

Our region’s number of cane farmers has reduced from 50 to less than a dozen, with their produce now being trucked 150 kilometres away to the Maryborough mill.

Students across the Sunshine Coast will be inspired to take up a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) thanks to a University of the Sunshine Coast program funded with a $524,455 federal government grant.

The Make Integrate and Explore (MIE) Lab project sends presenters into schools to deliver hands-on experiences for students and training for teachers to inspire more young people to take up a career in the emerging fields of the future. The program provides evidence-based early interventions in schools focussing on crystallising students’ interest in science and technology, helping students recognise their abilities and potential and breaking down gender stereotypes.

The funding will also support the presentation of 15 STEM-focused career education workshops for parents and carers in the region.

A recent fundraising lunch shone the spotlight on the individual cost of every lifesaving RACQ LifeFlight Rescue mission. More than 150 people attended the inaugural Travis Schultz and Partners Wine Lunch for LifeFlight raising $30,305.

LifeFlight Foundation director Steve Francia says each of the 584 critical rescues the service undertook last year came at a cost of $25,000 per mission. “LifeFlight continues to rely heavily on funding from Queensland communities including the Sunshine Coast where we have some wonderful supporters.” Last financial year, Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews completed more than 2000 critical missions, valued at $14.6 million. This comes at no cost to the patient.

COAST LOCAL JOINS BRISBANE ROAR A talented Sunshine Coast footballer is scoring big after recently signing a deal with Brisbane Roar Football Club to play in the national A-League competition. Jez Lofthouse says he is “super excited” to have signed with the Roar for two years. “After growing up going to games at Suncorp Stadium and watching the Roar play, it’s a cool feeling to be in the position those great players were in and I’m very keen for the season to begin,” the 21-yearold says. Lofthouse grew up on the Sunshine Coast and played with the Pacific Jets at Pacific Lutheran College, then the Sunshine Coast Junior Premier League side. He had a quick stint at the Sunshine Coast Fire before moving to Maroochydore FC for a season and then returning to the Fire. In 2017, aged 16, Lofthouse graduated to the National Premier Leagues Queensland with the Fire before switching to Olympic FC in 2018 where he won the league’s Young Player of the Year.

nitiating a conversation is often one of the hardest but the most important steps in breaking down the barriers of men’s mental health.

And what better way to challenge the stigma than to put it in the spotlight this Movember.

Having overcome his own adversities, personal trainer Leon Stensholm knows all too well the importance of embracing vulnerability and tackling those tough conversations.

Mr Stensholm lost a brother to suicide nine years ago, and he has now built a

by Leon. He says the most important step is taking action, and that in today’s world there is no longer a need for men to hide behind a “macho” visage.

“Mental health has been spoken about pretty heavily now for some years and times are changing,” he says.

“It’s time to stop the stigma and drop this big mask us men are carrying and put your hand up and get some help.

“We’ve got to take this macho man hat off. Vulnerability is the new cool.

“Sometimes taking that action is going to listen to a podcast, or make that first step to make an appointment to see a specialist, or go down to that coffee shop even if it makes you anxious. You’ve got to sometimes walk in through the fire and that’s the challenging part, but that’s where the growth happens.”

Having studied a diploma of counselling, Mr Stensholm, who recently released his book 60 Day to Mindfulness, is passionate about providing for others what he wishes was available to him 10 years ago.

• Be proactive and make time for your mental health before things go wrong.

• Find a social safe place, whether that be a support group or gym to attend regularly, and remember consistency is key.

• Vulnerability is the new cool – don’t be afraid to put your hand up for help.

• Take action and make that appointment to seek professional help.

• Check in with your mates.

“It’s important to spend time understanding and observing someone and being aware of the signs and symptoms.

“It’s easy to miss that in this day and age because we are so busy, we are so consumed in our phone, we are not present, we are not aware.”

Starting weekly catch-ups where men could hang out with a coffee and a bacon and egg burger to build friendships and camaraderie became a proactive and accepting space to recognise mental or emotional hardships.

Grab Life by the Balls now has regular meetings at Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Peregian Beach.

“What we do and the way that we do it is very specific,” Mr Parker says.

“We hit that space so that guys know they have that camaraderie and mateship before thing go wrong.

“The more we can do something proactive, then the better for everyone involved.

“This is important to top up your buckets and fill it above the line to stop becoming one of those statistics.”

Mr Parker hopes intervening early will help instigate those tough conversations. He encourages all men to think about joining an event and maintain consistency.

“Keep showing up,” he says.

“Consistency and just being there is enough. That’s why our events are weekly and that builds trust.

“Women are quite supportive of what we do too, because they can often see things before we open up to them.

“Sometimes the flyer on the fridge for a few months is the best way to get someone down to our events. Let someone know it is on and then hopefully they will come down. It’s about making these things normal and regular.

“We also need to make sure we check in with our mates.”

Mr Parker and Mr Stensholm will be speaking at the upcoming In Conversation – Show Us Your Mo event at Venue 114.

This is something Beerwah-based ghostwriter Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane has felt in her soul for as long as she can remember.

A Beerwah writer who helps aspiring authors find their voice has been recognised by the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network.

Pandemic melanoma crisis

plunge in the number of new patients attending Australia’s world-leading melanoma institute amid COVID lockdowns has triggered fears that people have deterred seeking potentially lifesaving medical procedures.

Official figures show patient numbers at the Melanoma Institute Australia’s Poche Centre are at a 12-year low. Numbers fell 18 per cent in 2020 and are likely to be 20 per cent down this year compared to 2019.

The statistics have raised concerns that people are not seeking medical advice.

Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) co-medical director Professor Richard Scolyer says with early detection vital, the trend may result in a spike in lives lost to the disease in the coming few years.

quickly spread to organs including the lungs, liver and brain,” she adds. “We have very real concerns that the coming year will see an influx of melanoma patients being diagnosed with more advanced-stage disease, which means a poorer prognosis.”

Australia has the world’s highest melanoma rates, with one person dying every six hours. It’s also the most common cancer in 20-39 year-olds.

The first sign is often a new or changing spot or mole on the skin. It’s a scenario model Oceana Strachan knows first-hand, and she is now sharing her story as part of the MIA’s new campaign, Game on Mole.

“I have olive skin and naively thought if I got sunburnt, I would deal with the consequences much later in life,” the 25-year-old says.

“But then I discovered an unusual looking mole on my leg and luckily, in the midst of the pandemic, decided to go to the doctor to get it checked.

“I was shocked when I was diagnosed with melanoma and ended up at Melanoma Institute Australia and having surgery. I am so thankful I didn’t delay seeking treatment.”

Oceana Strachan, 25, who was diagnosed with melanoma in April this year “We don’t think this drop in new patients means less Australians actually have melanoma, it just means that COVID has delayed them seeking medical advice and being diagnosed,” he says. “That delay in diagnosis and treatment can be the difference between life and death.”

The pandemic along with a reluctance of patients to seek advice or have regular skin checks are the most likely causes of the dramatic slide in consultations, says MIA’s Professor Georgina Long.

“If caught early, 90 per cent of melanomas can be cured with surgery alone, but if left undetected, melanoma can

diagnosis with followers on Instagram in the hope it would help promote sun-safe behaviour and early detection.

It’s also why she has agreed to be the face of this year’s MIA campaign urging young Australians in particular to take action. Game On Mole is in its third year and uses slogan t-shirts to start conversations and encourage people to photograph their skin and monitor for changes. “This campaign is more important than ever before,” Prof Scolyer says.

“We know COVID has resulted in melanoma patients being out there who just haven’t been diagnosed yet and it is critical that they hear this life-saving message.”

Bringing ballet to the

people Dancer Joel Burke loves ballet, and he wants modern audiences to love it too, which is why he launched BIG, a ballet event that is coming to the Sunshine Coast.

his passion for dancing where he found his true calling.

“My sister was a dancer,” he says.

“I was very hyperactive, so instead of being at home, I joined in as well. I began ballet at 11 and fell in love with it very quickly. It’s been what I’ve been focused on ever since.”

He trained at Queensland Ballet from 2011 until 2018 and was a finalist at international ballet competition Prix de Lausanne in 2019. But Mr Burke felt the profession needed to find its place in the 21st century. At 21 he founded promotions company Queensport Arts, with its first major project to produce and launch BIG. Co-produced with Beck Phillips and Khalid Tarabay and inspired by the success of cricket’s Big Bash League and the mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting

dream to make international ballet galas more accessible to Australia is becoming a reality for a young dancer, as he prepares to launch an event he hopes will change the local arts scene forever.

Coming to the Sunshine Coast next year, Ballet International Gala, or BIG, is the brainchild of 22-year-old Joel Burke, who is a professional dancer pioneering the path to introduce the much-loved art form to the modern world.

“Australia has never really had ballet galas, whereas Europe and America have them quite a lot,” Mr Burke says.

“I want to fill that void [so] Australia doesn’t miss out. I think it’s time for ballet to become accessible for everyone.”

As an energetic child Mr Burke enjoyed rugby and cricket, but it was

“Sometimes a full-length ballet can be quite a confronting thing for someone that has no idea about ballet,” Mr Burke says. “In the gala format what you get is a highlight reel.

“We have chosen some of the most famous ballets that exist and then we’ve chosen the best bits of those ballets. It’s like the 2020 Big Bash in terms of what cricket did for test cricket, but for ballet.

“For someone who doesn’t know about ballet they can still enjoy it and go ‘that’s really impressive’ even if they don’t know the intricate techniques.”

BIG runs from January 26 to 30 and includes seven shows at Brisbane’s QPAC Theatre, as well as a performance at The Events Centre, Caloundra on February 5.

While this is an opportunity to bring ballet to regional Queensland, performing on the Sunshine Coast has an extra special meaning for Mr Burke after his father died two months ago. “[My dad] had a place in Maroochydore and so it was fitting that I wanted to bring [BIG] to the Sunny Coast as well.

“The Sunny Coast always misses out quite a lot and loses [events] to its big brother down south and it’s important to bring arts and culture to the Sunny Coast.

“We’ve had great support from Roy and Nola Thompson too, which has been great.”

BIG will feature principal dancers from the world’s leading ballet companies, including the American Ballet Theatre and Astana Opera, and will showcase iconic ballets including Le Corsaire, Spartacus, Don Quixote and Grand Pas Classique.

Looking ahead, Mr Burke plans to continue growing BIG, fusing traditional ballet with the modern world.

“This is not a one-show goal. We want to tour it in multiple cities and countries,” he says.

“I love traditional ballet. I could sit through a six-hour ballet, but I think for the art form itself, and for it to stay relevant, we need to think of how we can keep those traditional ballets running where it stays commercial and entertaining. We are experimenting while keeping traditional ballet there.”

The talented young man has also just finished filming for his role as Ben Shelby in the upcoming movie The Red Shoes: Next Step due for release in early 2022.

s the worsening housing shortage on the Sunshine Coast forces more residents to the brink of homelessness a local charity is hoping to make a small difference.

A property developer is joining forces with Homeless Outreach Sunshine Coast to help drive the change with temporary and permanent solutions.

Willis has been collecting donations from WOW members to purchase tents to give temporary relief for those sleeping rough.

“We approached Homeless Outreach Sunshine Coast and asked what they needed, and the response was that tents make a world of difference all year round,” Ms Willis says.

“In summer it provides shelter from the rain and in winter it helps keep the cold air out.”

Homeless Outreach Sunshine Coast coordinator Wendi Rampton says there are a staggering number of people in the region currently living in their cars, and these tents provide enough space and privacy for those affected by the housing shortage.

“The reality is you can’t live in a two-man tent. These tents … are tall enough to both stand in and cook in, and there’s room to sleep and store your belongings,” Ms Rampton says.

“I know women who have risked sleeping under awnings in parks out in the open, just so they can stretch their body rather than being cramped in a car.”

This tent initiative is just a small solution, with Ms Willis also working out the logistics of setting up a short-term safe car park, which is something Homeless Outreach Sunshine Coast has been advocating for.

“Someone has offered us a block of land temporarily and we are in the process of seeking approval to use this as a place people can park their vehicles and know they will feel safe,” Ms Willis says.

“We are constantly looking for opportunities where we can create immediate and effective change to assist.

“Even if it’s just one tent, that’s one person or family that won’t have to suffer through the rain.”

Ms Rampton says when many charities close down over the festive season, her outreach service is at its busiest.

OUR FUTURE MEDICS Buderim Private Hospital is mentoring budding doctors and nurses from across the region after a COVID hiatus.

Last month 41 students in Years 10, 11 and 12 from 20 Sunshine Coast high schools learned first-hand from medical, allied and other health professionals through presentations, simulation labs and practical work experience.

“Our hospital experience day helps students make informed choices by exploring future careers in a practical and hands-on way,” hospital general manager Karen Clark says.

“Students have the opportunity for a hands-on educational experience to gain an understanding of a range of careers within a hospital setting including nursing, midwifery, medicine and allied health.”

Education manager Alex Spencer says the program has helped hundreds of local students since launching in 2007. “We like to work closely with local education providers such as the University of the Sunshine Coast, Central Queensland University and East Coast TAFE to support students and so far this year we have already welcomed more than 100 midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy, allied health and medical students,” Ms Spencer says.

COURT RULES ON BEACHSIDE PROJECT

Love is still in the air for Caloundra’s Gerry and Anne Slager as they celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss.

Reaching their diamond anniversary is a milestone occasion, but the couple admits it has not always been smooth sailing.

“If you have an argument, sometimes you just need to walk away, and after 10 minutes, all is forgotten,” Mr Slager says.

At 81 years old, Mr Slager has only recently retired from tiling, a job he has been working hard at since he was 15.

Now he works on completing 1000-piece puzzles in a few days and has a collection of more than 100 puzzles.

Mrs Slager says she enjoys visiting her local gym and always makes time for a daily 40-minute walk.

She says the secret to their marriage is having a lifelong love for each other. “Daily acts of making tea for each other, Gerry cooking bacon and eggs every Sunday morning, giving each other space when needed, as well as being able to travel and experience the world,” she adds.

The couple’s youngest daughter Cindy Steele congratulates her parents and acknowledges the inspiration they have become to the rest of the family.

A controversial beachside development will go ahead after the Planning and Environment Court ruled in favour of The Beachfront Buddina.

This comes after Friends of Buddina lodged an appeal against Sunshine Coast Council last year over major concerns for endangered loggerhead turtles that nest and hatch in the dunes.

Despite the result, Friends of Buddina is pleased amendments to the original application have been made to mitigate the impact on turtles.

“Although this judgement is disappointing, we take away the significant wins that we achieved along the way through improved conditions applied to the development approval and improved conditions applied to the operational works approval,” a statement reads.

“The approval amendments made by council in July 2020, although delaying the legal process, not only improved the turtle lighting approval conditions, but created enforceable outcomes at construction and ongoing for the life of the building.”

Residents will be required to comply with rules on automated light controls and blinds after 8pm during nesting season.

A young, single mum in Noosa faces her terminal diagnosis with only the support of her own mother, who has relocated to the Coast to help. Her life will be cut short, way too soon, and her children will lose their mother.

I know she found great comfort in those moments.

Scouts trek historic trail Kawana Scouts has been actively involved in the community since 1980 and on October 10 Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway welcomed six Scouts and a leader for a guided walk along the heritage walking track and a visit to the original Krauss locomotive. The event was arranged by young scout Brock Adamson to attain his Grey Wolf Badge, the pinnacle award for a Cub Scout. Brock had to submit a bushwalk plan to his scout leader and using a map led the walk, making sure everyone had appropriate equipment, clothing, food and a first aid kit. It was a special nod to the scouting history of the Buderim track, having been walked almost 100 years ago by another scout group.

Markets fill fundraising gap Members of Quota Club Coolum Beach have started holding pop-up stalls at Pacific on Coolum on Heathfield Road, Coolum Beach. With many fundraising events cancelled recently this is a way for members to raise money and help disadvantaged residents in the community.

A night of Mexican

magic The Sunshine Coast’s own NightQuarter will be holding a special Day of the Dead-themed event this weekend.

he incredible colour, mystery and iconography of the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations will be coming to NightQuarter for the Reconnect Festival on Saturday, November 6. A collaboration between NightQuarter, the University of the Sunshine Coast and Jazmine Productions, it is a multifaceted event across four stages.

Reconnect Festival began last year as a way for the community to reconnect after having been in lockdown for much of the year, and while last year’s event didn’t have a theme, this year’s Day of the Dead theme will bring the venue to life with Mexican masks, costumes and decorations.

Dr Hannah Banks, a lecturer in creative industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says the festival is an opportunity to connect USC students with industry as well as providing a meaningful new cultural event for the Sunshine Coast.

“We’ve had a team of students involved right from the beginning, doing communications, graphic design and marketing,” Dr Banks says. “I have a few students who have been shadowing me as festival director and we have some theatre students putting together an interactive performance. There are music students

doing busking and student bands performing live on stage.

“Last year, about 4000 people went through, so it’s a huge opportunity for them. We have a student doing virtual reality and activating street art, so you can scan your phone across the street art and it will come to life on your phone.”

The university team researched the traditions of the Day of the Dead festival and reached out to community groups, partnering with Jazmine Productions, a Mexican events company based in Coolum. Artistic director Alpha Cisne Castro is originally from Mexico City and is importing traditional Mexican decorations from her homeland for the celebration.

A seven-tiered offering will be created and Ms Castro will explain the significance of each tier. These tiers represents the seven steps people take on their way to heaven or back to earth. “To have this space at NightQuarter and get in front of people to share our tradition makes me feel so excited and so emotional,” she says. “My parents are sending some decorations from Mexico and I will take them to the festival to put on the offering on the stage. We will dress up and explain about the meaning of the offering and its symbols.

“In Mexico, we believe our loved ones who have died come back to visit us,” she says. “Sometimes you can talk with them.

“You talk with their photos and say ‘look, we made this for you’. People in Mexico put the offering in their homes, some people decorate the graves in the cemeteries and the cemeteries are full of music. People put a lot of flowers up – traditionally we use marigolds. We fill the cemeteries with flowers, candles and food.

It’s like a big, mystical hug.”

In Mexico, it is believed October 28 is for the people who died by accident, October 30 is for children who died without a baptism, November 1 is for babies or young children who passed away and November 2 is for adults who passed away.

While it may seem macabre to see faces painted with sugar skull makeup, humour is an important part of the festival.

Mexican folkloric music will add to the atmosphere and Australian First Nations rituals will be woven into the event, with Gubbi Gubbi representative Lyndon Davis performing a smoking ceremony.

Ashley Robinson says he has a tendency towards negative thinking, but some recent random acts of kindness have changed his mindset.

I

n a cynical world it endures, inspiring poetry and songs, sculpture and art.

Romantic love has never been more alive nor seemingly elusive.

I am testament to this kind of love being real and worth holding out for. This week’s high point is the second anniversary of the day my Beloved and I were married.

On a Friday afternoon in the pretty courtyard of our home, two friends were our witnesses and over the following days, we told family and friends we were hitched.

It was not as if we were naïve nor particularly starry-eyed: my rangy, handsome husband and I had each known heartbreak and been bruised in the washing machine of life.

It has been accepted through time that love is the most profound emotion, the lifeblood of existence. Those we love will be in our minds as we breathe our last.

My Beloved and I may have found our one in a million, but it turns out that together we are one in a hundred.

ABC’s Australia Talks survey revealed only one per cent of people end up marrying the boy or girl next door.

My Beloved was not so much the boy next door as the man upstairs: we each

bought apartments in the same unit block and for a year and a half, we knew each other in passing – a wave at the rubbish bins or a shared eye roll at a body corporate meeting.

But then it happened. As John Green wrote in The Fault in Our Stars, we fell in love the way we fall asleep: slowly, then all at once. We had dates. We wrote notes. We planned surprises. It turns out our real-life coming together makes us unusual.

A recent Relationships Australia survey found about 60 per cent of Australians used dating apps each year – a staggering number – and an ABC survey last year found people are now more likely to meet their partner online than any other way.

But it is only when people come together in the flesh that real love has the chance to come alive. The quirks and jokes, the wanting to be together, the sharing of admiration and respect as well as the events of the day breathe love to life.

Two years ago this week, my handsome sergeant and I made a promise to look up and see the other.

We chose each other that day. Every day, deliberately, we still do. I can’t believe my luck.

have a tendency to focus on the negative. Whether it be 15-year-old vandals in the park, road rage, or just unkind selfish people, there are always plenty of things to focus on.

But lately I’ve experienced some random acts of kindness that made me think about the good people out there.

The first was when I pulled up at the bottle-o and realised I had forgotten my mask and was mumbling to myself as I headed back to the car about being a dickhead, when a random guy told me he had another one in his car.

He pulled out a brand-new cloth one in a bag and told me to take it. I sort of hesitated and he told me that I had looked after his late dad in the old days back at the pub and it was the least he could do.

I remembered his dad, who was one of life’s gentlemen, so it really wasn’t such a big deal. He did remind me though that I was coming back from Brisbane one day back then and his mum and dad were broken down on the side of the road and I pulled up and took his mum back to Mooloolaba while they waited for a tow truck, so he reckoned we were square. I

thought that was pretty cool as it was a nice memory and also, I didn’t go home without my beer so it was a double bonus.

Then another random act of kindness changed my thought process.

Last week I was at Caltex at Maroochydore and they have half their pumps out because of a revamp, so I reckon the staff would be copping it about wait time, but not from me.

I went in to pay and the very cheery soul behind the counter asked me did I want a traveller? I thought it might be a sausage roll that had been sitting there all day, but to be polite I said yes.

So she went out the back and came back with a white packet, handed it to me and said: “Have a nice day”. Now, it didn’t feel hot or greasy and it was pretty light, but I waited until I got in the car to see what it was and it was rum balls.

Now this was either an act of kindness or well thought-out marketing for chubby people with a sweet tooth, but because I’ve changed my thought process, I will go with the fact that she is an awesome staff member and an outstanding rum ball maker. Thank you.

SHOPPERS SHOULD TAKE A CHILL PILL Sami Muirhead says abuse of retail staff is on the rise across the Coast as shoppers grow frustrated when they can’t get what they want.

I

f you haven’t got something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I was stunned to witness a customer at Kenilworth Country Bakery tell a middle-aged, quietly-spoken staff member she was a “F… expletive”.

The gourmet bakery had run out of lemon meringue flavoured donuts. I mean, I get the heartache of not being able to fulfil your sugar cravings, but at what point is that the poor staff member’s fault?

Customer rage is increasing across the Coast. A lady I have known for many years tells me she is abused every few days at the homewares shop she works in at Kawana.

Customers hurl into a fit of rage if the stock they want is simply not available.

Come on, people. A lack of pillow cases is not worth screaming abuse at this poor grandmother. We need to do better with Christmas, and all the shopping it brings, less than 50 days away. We are all going to need to take a chill pill.

Have you noticed parcels are taking a little longer to arrive than usual? Discounts at furniture stores are a rarity. God forbid, even rug stores have stopped closing down.

Cars are in short supply due to a worldwide shortage of computer chips. Gone are the days of picking from six colours of the same

car in stock.

Consumers are getting FOMO and they are not used to it. So, they are getting cranky when they don’t get what they want.

But why now? What is causing this craziness. Aren’t we supposed to be financially sensible in these strange times?

In Googling for answers as to why my new deck chairs will be arriving in March 2022, it hit me: demand versus supply. All around the world, factories have been locked down for probably half of the last 18 months, and all these links in the supply chain are affected. Demand for the stuff in Queensland is going through the roof, but the stuff simply isn’t produced yet. There are factories catching their production up, with warehouses full of goods ready to go, but there’s a worldwide shortage of wooden pallets and shipping containers. It’s likely I will get my deck chairs just in time for winter, but it wont be the retailer’s fault.

Let’s take a big breath and count to three. If you want to be clever and avoid missing out, buy your Christmas goodies now. And if you have read all of this and still haven’t got anything nice to say to our hard workers at this time of year, then you should put your hand in the air to speak and then put it across your face.

s the vital Pinktober awareness campaign comes to a close for another year, Beerwah greatgrandmother Heather Rutherford is enjoying a life she was not sure she would have the chance to live after a cancer diagnosis 50 years ago.

In 1971 Ms Rutherford was a happy and healthy 32-year-old until her world came tumbling down when she was told she had breast cancer. With medical technology far less advanced, the now 83-year-old had to overcome hurdles not even doctors had the answer to. “At the time I was diagnosed I had two little boys, one was just at school and the other was at pre-school and I was living a full life. It was scary. My children were only little, and that was my priority.”

Ms Rutherford successfully underwent surgery and radiation therapy to remove the cancer but nearly 11 years later developed a painful condition known as lymphoedema.

“Initially, my elbow area started to swell and, because so little was known about it, I was initially diagnosed with arthritis,” she says. “There was no support or direction.”

“I was told compression and elevation were remedies and for some time, I had a hook in the ceiling above my bed and I was sleeping with my arm elevated, hanging from the ceiling. I found out later this was very bad for my condition.”

As science caught up with the condition and treatments became more effective, Ms Rutherford tried various therapies until she was introduced to manual lymphatic drainage in the 1980s. This therapy is now available to cancer patients at Sunshine Coast Bloomhill Cancer Care, and lead therapist Debbie Myers says the treatment is lifechanging for lymphoedema sufferers.

Ms Rutherford says she is “excited” to see how far treatment and technology has come in the past 50 years and the difference it is now making for cancer patients.

Hoping to inspire others on life beyond a cancer diagnosis, Ms Rutherford’s message to others is to never give up.

“The most important thing is that people have hope; they can see light at the end of the tunnel,” she says.

“It’s daunting being told you have cancer. But nowadays the information is there, and the support is there, when it wasn’t years ago. There is help.”

EASY WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CHANCE OF CONCEPTION Most couples have heard all the tricks about what you and your partner should or should not do in order to conceive. But most of the advice is outdated or doesn’t actually help. However, there are some real tools you can use to help fall pregnant.

As there are only five to seven days per cycle that you can conceive, timing is everything! With the help of basal body temperature charting and observing changes to your cervical mucus you can find the perfect window to ‘try’. The best time is on the days when you see the cervical mucus and especially when it is clear and stretchy. You want to be trying before ovulation as it is important for the sperm to be waiting to meet the egg once ovulation occurs. This is because the egg survives for only 12 to 24 hours post ovulation unless a sperm fertilises it.

Therefore, the three days before ovulation, the day of and the day after ovulation are the best days to try to conceive.

Keep sex spontaneous and fun by really tuning in to your partner during this fertile window. It can be a challenge to keep the stress out of the bedroom when trying to conceive, but it’s so important to

An easy tip is to think about how you would be eating if you were pregnant and make those changes now! Some simple tips are reducing caffeine and alcohol and stopping smoking. Eat lots of leafy greens, vegies and fruit. Your plate should be colourful at each meal. Avoid too much raw, cold and processed foods and a little tip from Chinese medicine – if you want to eat something that is cold or raw,

combine it with some ginger, chilli or cinnamon to aid digestion. My advice is to cook all your meals yourself so that you know what’s going in!

Last but not least is learning some kind of mindfulness technique to allow your sympathetic nervous system to take a break and to engage your parasympathetic system, allowing your body to rest and restore and grow.

TENANTED PROPERTY REFORMS TO FAVOUR RENTERS Pet-loving renters will be thrilled with new legislation that prevents landlords enforcing a ‘no pets’ policy. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

I

mportant changes to the Housing Legislation Amendment Bill 2021, passed in late October, favour tenants and reduce landlords’ rights says REIQ. Four key areas of change in the Bill are around pets, the domestic and family violence provisions, new grounds for termination and minimum housing standards.

It will be easier for tenants with pets to rent. “The new legislation effectively eliminates a property owner’s right to have a no-pets policy.”

REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella says the pet provisions come into effect in about six to 12 months.

Tenants will need to seek approval for the pet to reside in a leased property. The landlord can still say no, but only based on certain conditions.

Other changes are that pet damage is excluded from the definition of fair wear and tear, which means property landlords will be able to seek compensation for damage that’s caused by pets, and a landlord can now impose conditions such as property fumigation and professional carpet cleaning in the

approval of a pet, which if violated, may be considered a breach of the tenancy agreement.

The updated domestic and family violence provisions were due to come into effect by the end of October. “These largely replicate the protections that were enacted as part of the COVID-19 residential tenancies reform suite which commenced in April 2020,” Ms Mercorella says.

The now enduring provisions will enable a tenant who is experiencing such circumstances to bypass the normal requirements and financial obligations associated with terminating a lease.

“Victims of domestic and family violence will be able to terminate a tenancy agreement with only seven days’ notice and those seven days of rent is all they will be liable for,” Ms Mercorella says.

REIQ welcomes the new minimum housing standards which come into effect from September 2023 and include the property being waterproof, working locks on doors and windows, operational kitchen and laundry facilities and window coverings.

“These are all very reasonable standards and I think they clarify that it shouldn’t be lawful to rent out a property that doesn’t meet these conditions,” Ms

Auction action at 35 George Street in Alexandra Headland

T

here is a lot of national news at the moment around the inflation rate and increasing interest rates, but none of that news seems to have put a dampener on the Coast property market. Both local and Brisbane buyers, along with a fair dose of interstate investors, were in the mix of bidders at last weekend’s auctions.

The listing agents are still reporting good results with several properties selling over the reserve.

MINYAMA BATTLE Listing agent, Ray White’s Will Van den Dugen, said when it came down to the wire, it was a fierce battle to secure 11 Richmond Place in Minyama.

Five bidders started off the auction action – two from Brisbane and three locals.

“Eventually it was a two-horse race with two heated buyers fighting it out to the end,” Mr Van den Dugen said. It was local

Two Kuluin properties sold under the hammer and well over the reserve last week, reported listing agent Jason Burns of First National Riverside.

Up for sale was the three-bedroom home at 33 Tallow Wood Drive on an 800sqm block. Eight bidders vied for the chance to own the original condition home. It finally sold to a local buyer for $710,000.

“It was the first home built in the street,” Mr Burns said. “The owners arrived there in 1976 in their caravan.”

Along the road at 85 Tallow Wood Drive, a local investor secured another three-bedroom home for $775,000.

“Both sales were massively above reserve,” Mr Burns added. “They are in a good location with a slightly more affordable house prices.”

BUDERIM BONUS The six-bedroom house at 14 Illuka Street in Buderim was just too attractive for a Brisbane downsizing couple with adult children living away from home.

Filled with plenty of character in a glorious bush setting, listing agent Jess Ruskin of Home Sunshine Coast said five bidders wanted the home. It finally sold under the hammer for $1.43 million.

It was a good Buderim auction for the three-bedroom house at 18 Tulong Court listed by Gregory Ward of Ray White. The owners held out for the auction even after receiving three solid pre-auction offers.

Four bidders were active on the day.

The eventual buyer went head-to-head with a woman who had her interstatebased parents on the phone.

It sold under the hammer for $1.186m.

The buyer already owns a house in the same street.

FISHING REPORT with Andrew Blyth The weather is heating up and so is the fishing! Offshore the warmer water is starting to make its way down from up north. A few small black marlin have already been caught with some reports of a few Spanish mackerel starting to show up early for the season. On the reefs snapper, cobia and pearl perch have been the star performers with plenty around, jigs, soft plastics and fresh baits getting the results. Back on shore the beaches are fishing well with great catches of whiting, bream and the odd dart. Live beach worms are your best bet. The estuaries are starting to fish well with the warmer water. Flathead along the weed edges and drop-offs are a great target. The run out tide is the pick with live bait, paddle tail soft plastics and pilchards being the best options to tempt these great fish. Mangrove jacks have also been the highlight of the past week with good numbers and sizes being caught, early mornings and late afternoons on the warmer days are best to tempt these hard fighting fish. Suspending hardbody lures are a great option to try. As always check your local conditions and happy fishing.
