The word ‘roadmap’ has taken on a very different meaning in recent times, and I can’t help but wish we could revert back to the previous versions that my family used to journey from north to south Queensland while on holiday during the ’90s.

But alas, this is our new normal – navigating through the reality of COVID-19, with government-planned roadmaps outlining our future.

As you would have heard or read by now, the Queensland government has presented the way forward towards opening our borders to the rest of the country.

General consensus is, “it’s about time”, as families prepare to reunite, and our vital tourism industries get back on track. In this week’s cover story, journalist Gail Forrer speaks with tourism operators about the real need to support and celebrate the local

Still, the feelings of trepidation are genuine. Until now, Queensland has remained unscathed in terms of the health crisis affecting the rest of the world. Our hospitals have not yet felt the weight of COVID-19, nor have Queenslanders been exposed to the real possibility of contracting the virus.

According to government officials, including our chief health officer, all of this is about to change. We need to be mentally prepared, we need to get vaccinated and we need to scrub up on the importance of handwashing and social distancing.

We need to be smart in order to live our lives as freely as COVID will allow us.

Here we go Queensland, let’s work together for our future.

Squid Game and our kids

T

he dystopian South Korean horror series Squid Game has become Netflix’s most watched TV series, but it is quickly becoming as controversial as it is popular.

The latest controversy to arise around Squid Game, which is rated MA15+, relates to the interest it has sparked amongst young children. This includes warnings from an Australian school that children as young as six are recreating games featured in the dark and gory hit show.

A council in Southern England recently sent an email to parents urging them to “be vigilant” after receiving reports “young people are copying games and violence” from the show. In Australia, similar warnings have been issued by educators.

In Squid Game, characters compete for a cash prize by participating in challenges that augment classic Korean children’s games, with the “losers” being killed at the end of each round. Further emphasising the show’s twisted take on child’s play, these games are staged in highly stylised arenas, such as an adult scale children’s playground. While the recent warnings urge parents not to let their children watch Squid Game, young children’s awareness of the violent show more likely relates to its pervasive presence on social media, which has

A number of successful channels on YouTube Kids (designed for viewers under 12) have capitalised on the Squid Game trend. This YouTube content includes ‘How to Draw Squid Game’ character videos, and Squid Game themed gameplay videos from online gaming platform Roblox.

This videogame, which is popular with kids, enables users to program games and share them with other users.

On both the kids’ and main version of YouTube, videos aimed at children feature people (often children) playing these Squid Game-inspired games in Roblox, with the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ challenge emerging as a particularly popular trend. This challenge is also a trend on TikTok, with people emulating the game in a vast variety of real life settings and in Roblox and Minecraft.

The ‘Red Light, Green Light’ scene has become one of Squid Game’s most widely shared moments: the giant animatronic doll that acts as a deadly motion sensor in this game has been heavily meme-ified. This doll often features in video thumbnails for Squid Game-related children’s YouTube content.

Most of these kids’ YouTube videos are quite innocuous by themselves. However, they

show how Squid Game has crept into digital content explicitly targeting young children.

Given Squid Game’s bright, childish aesthetics and focus on playground games, it is perhaps not surprising that viral online content about the show appeals to children. But the boundaries between adult and child-oriented content online have always been murky.

YouTube has been at the centre of a number of controversies regarding inappropriate content aimed at children. TikTok has faced similar controversies related to children’s safety on the app and problematic content being watched by children, such as anti-vaccine videos. Tik Tok allows full access to the app to children aged over 13 but reports show children much younger are using it: alongside YouTube, TikTok is currently facing a US Senate hearing on kids’ safety.

After a historic fine of A$227 million was imposed on YouTube by the US Federal Trade Commission in 2019, sweeping changes were introduced to make the distinction between adult and children’s content clearer on the platform. For instance, creators must now inform YouTube if their content is for children and machine-learning is used to identify videos that clearly target young audiences.

Despite these changes, YouTube remains a very different beast to broadcast television, and

content popular with children on both the main and children’s version of the platform often differs markedly from kids’ TV. Children’s YouTube content that riffs on Squid Game characters and scenes continues a longstanding trend of ‘mash-up’ content for children on the platform.

Like Squid Game content, ‘mash-up’ videos harness trending themes, search terms, and characters – often featuring popular characters in thumbnail imagery and video titles.

Adult anxieties about Squid Game’s malign influence on children build on earlier concerns about this ‘mash-up’ content, but also about children’s interaction with the web more generally.

The rising global panic about children’s participation in Squid Game challenges echoes the ‘Momo’ phenomenon of 2018 and 2019. In this case, a photo of a sinister figure that became associated with the moniker ‘Momo’ went viral online (the photo was actually of a Japanese sculpture).

An international news cycle emerged about ‘Momo’, claiming the creature was appearing in children’s content on YouTube and encouraging kids to participate in deadly games and challenges.

As is now occurring in relation to Squid Game, in Australia and beyond official warnings were issued to parents about the ‘Momo Challenge’, advising them to be vigilant. It soon became clear the ‘Momo Challenge’ was most likely a viral hoax.

Momo embodied parents’ worst fears about the dangers of children’s internet use.

Concerns about Squid Game’s influence on children have a similar tenor: these fears may not be a response to actual dangers, but a manifestation of our discomfort with how easily adult-oriented media can seep into online content aimed at young children.

The unruly tentacles of Squid Game’s inter-generational appeal show how streaming media challenges existing conceptions of ‘child-appropriate’ content.

Let the good times roll With the Queensland government announcing a roadmap to reopening our borders, local tourism operators are breathing a sigh of relief, after the worst two years many of them have ever experienced in business.

ationally and internationally, much of the community sentiment is clear: “It’s time.”

And, with Queensland’s COVID roadmap to opening our borders revealed last week, the public is now preparing to transition into what will be our new normal.

The transition plan was announced on Monday, October 18 with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palszczuk sharing the planned timeline – all contingent on vaccination rates hitting set target dates.

Ms Palaszcuk’s plan aims to open up Queensland’s borders to fully vaccinated people from interstate COVID-19 hotspots before Christmas. But first, we must reach the first step – 70 per cent of Queenslanders must be fully vaccinated

by November 19.

By that date, people in hotspots will be able to travel to Queensland by air if they are fully vaccinated and have tested negative for COVID in the past 72 hours.

They will need to home quarantine for 14 days. More freedoms for travellers into Queensland will come into effect when the state’s population is 80 per cent fully vaccinated, expected to happen by December 17.

That includes allowing fully vaccinated people to come by road, and travellers being able to avoid any quarantine. “The faster we are vaccinated, the faster these deadlines will be

achieved,” the premier said.

“It means that some of these dates may come forward if we get the vaccination rates up.

“So, if we reach 70 per cent sooner than November 19, we will ease the restrictions sooner.”

She says the roadmap dates should create a “sense of urgency” around people getting the jab.

Tourism Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel has welcomed the timing of the announcement and says it has finally given us clarity on how the Sunshine Coast’s tourism industry can move ahead.

“Some hotels have up to 70 per cent of their inventory booked by interstate visitors over the Christmas period, but until the announcement, there was no certainty that these guests could get to the Sunshine Coast to take up their bookings,” he says. “So, there is a lot of relief and both customers and our industry can plan for the Christmas period.

“With the roadmap in place, industry will be gearing up for the busy Christmas period and looking for strong holiday season bookings to recoup the losses from the past 18 months.

“The announcement will instil much-needed confidence in the region’s tourism sector and let us all focus on doing what we do best, and that is delivering a world-class experience to our visitors.”

What accommodation owners/operators say: The owner/director of Caloundra Holiday Centre, Tracey Harris, is breathing a sigh of relief after the announcement.

Although all of the holiday rental accommodation options she promotes via her business are fully booked for the upcoming festive season, it’s the certainty of future bookings that she is craving. She believes the announcement has given hope for her desired outcome.

“At last, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Ms Harris says.

Fortunately, she is pleased to say support from the drive market has seen her beds filled to capacity.

“We have been booked for the Christmas/New Year period since February. About 90 per cent of these bookings come from the drive market and about 10 per cent are southerners.”

Within an hour of the Premier’s announcement, Ms Harris says her phones were ringing hot with booking requests, particularly those from southerners who were looking towards coming up next winter.

Landmark Resort Mooloolaba general manager Brett Thompson hails the government’s roadmap out of COVID as a “step in the right direction”.

While he says there are still some bookings available for the Christmas/New Year period, he reports the majority of

“The family accommodation is filled, but there are gaps in the one-bedroom and studio bookings,” he says.

At this point, he says December and January are 30 per cent down on this time last year. After the announcement, he predicts an ‘avalanche’ of bookings coming from interstate.

“They (the southerners) are desperate to get out and enjoy a Queensland holiday.”

In the past, many of these potential holidaymakers have been affected by lockdown, making bookings only to find their bookings having to be cancelled.

bookings in the last 18 months – and then there’s the administration cost with cancellations,” he says.

However, he is pleased to say he can still describe tourism bookings are ‘buoyant’. “September and October were

good, in particular October proved to be unexpectedly good.”

In the Coolum area, owner/director of The Point Coolum and President of Coolum Business and Tourism association, Mark Cameron says the roadmap gives clarity around opening up.

Mr Cameron explains how lockdown disrupted the regular rhythm of accommodation bookings: “We would usually have a booking window of 30 days or more ahead. “Now people book today for tomorrow and that makes it hard to plan ahead with staffing.”

He says it is irrelevant whether or not he agrees with the way the government has mapped the way out of border restrictions and feels the present plan is “leaving plenty of wriggle room – it’s not complete yet”.

Nevertheless, similar to other operators, he is pleased the industry now has something to work with.

“I’m just pleased there is a defined plan on the ground and we can make decisions around that.”

incredible marine life, while others celebrate the richness of the hinterland experience and our nature-based attractions. It is also pleasing to see that food-based tourism businesses… are competing for awards. The region’s outstanding produce and restaurants are a major drawcard for attracting discerning travellers.

It’s been a tough year, so to be nominated for one of these awards means they have gone over and above to provide the best possible service and experience.” Winners will be announced on November 12.

Gail Forrer, writer In January 2020, we were told the coronavirus had reached our shores. The news changed the world as we know it. Since then, we have experienced lockdowns and meltdowns, we have seen protestors storm city streets to express their outrage at government restrictions.

We have become used to wearing face masks and taking a COVID test for anything that resembles a sore throat or runny nose.

Certainly, COVID affected some people more than others. As Queenslanders, we have been fortunate in our low infection numbers and in comparison, minimal lockdowns. But we have not been spared everything and on a personal level, just about everyone has their own travel story of woe. The ones where an unexpected COVID lockdown grounded you, interfered with your plans, cut you short and left you stranded.

COVID messes with your head and your plans.

On an industry level, the uncertainty has wreaked havoc. Although Sunshine Coast tourism has been protected via the drive market and various long-term booking from interstate sporting groups, it has still suffered. Accommodation operators together with associated businesses including entertainment and hospitality enterprises have borne enormous financial burdens. So, on October 18, when the Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles flagged potential changes to restrictions to entry into Queensland, albeit, dependant upon vaccination rates and their timing – there was a collective sigh of relief.

After a scorching year of cancellations, there are no celebrations, just a quietly cautious self-protective tone of hesitancy in the operators’ responses.

“Never”, says Ms Tracey Harris, “have I experienced anything like this in the 35 years I have owned Caloundra Holiday Centre.

“I went through the GFC and many other things – but nothing like this.”

It will probably be some time until the Sunshine Coast Airport website can dismiss its advice to monitor the airline website for any updates to travel to and from the airport.

But Landmark general manager has it right when he says: “It’s a start.”

Fingers crossed, this is the third and final chapter in the dark story of COVID.

The number of people choosing to pursue a rewarding career in the disability sector is on the rise, with TAFE Queensland experiencing an 87 per cent increase in students enrolling in the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) over the course of the 2020/2021 financial year.

According to data published by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, the demand for skilled welfare support workers is projected to grow by 17.7 per cent nation-wide over the next five years, likely fuelled by the completion of the Queensland NDIS rollout in late 2020.

The Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay are leading the charge in producing a pipeline of skilled workers, with TAFE Queensland’s East Coast region reporting an incredible 163 per cent increase in CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) enrolments during the 2020/21 financial year.

Nambour resident Deborah Kirk, 50, is among the growing number of residents who have chosen to develop their skills in disability support. A devoted mother-of-three, Mrs Kirk has spent the last 25 years as a fulltime carer for her eldest child, who has autism and is intellectually impaired.

Mrs Kirk said she has tried studying before over the years, but had to withdraw to focus on her family.

But when her husband was diagnosed with endstage heart failure and chronic kidney disease, Mrs Kirk knew she needed a long term plan.

“Eventually my husband will pass away and my son will become independent and able to live well enough on his own with support – that is our goal.

But what about me?” Mrs Kirk said.

“That’s why I chose to further my study, so I can use my skills now to help my family, as well as be employable in something that I’m very knowledgeable about.”

With this goal in mind, Mrs Kirk decided to enrol in a CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus in 2019, before completing a CHC43115 Certificate IV in Disability online in June 2021.

While she is not yet working in industry due to the risks COVID poses to her and potential clients (she has a medical condition that means she is unable to be vaccinated or wear a mask), Mrs Kirk said the knowledge and skills she has gained throughout her studies have already been of great benefit to her family.

“I have just helped my son renegotiate his NDIS plan based on the information that I know, and for my husband, we just got an aged care package approved based on what I now know. And that’s

the important part for me – to ensure that those who I took the courses for in the first place are reaping the benefits of my knowledge.”

Mrs Kirk is now looking to study a CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health, in order to complement her skills.

“Coming from my own personal experience, but also going into an industry where COVID is really hitting those with disability hard, I just feel that people with disabilities and their families are more vulnerable,” she said.

“Carers – and those who go into the role of carer – have already got their heart in the right place, but I think sometimes they need a little bit of support. We do it because we love that person and we want to help that person, but we need support too.”

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports as many as one in six Australians have a disability; but despite how common disabilities are, Mrs Kirk said we are still lacking when it comes to inclusion, understanding and accessibility.

“These are people who want to be able to participate and contribute in our society, and I

think we need to encourage and support them to achieve, which we can do if we have just a bit more personal knowledge,” Mrs Kirk said.

“My studies have basically balanced my life. I still have goals for my son but I have the knowledge now to support that and I am able to ensure I’m respectful of his rights, respectful of his confidentiality and respectful of his choices – because he does have the right to make choices.”

KOALAS GET THE JAB Hundreds of koalas are set to receive a lifesaving jab in the fight against chlamydia. The University of the Sunshine Coast is leading a phase-three rollout of a koala chlamydia vaccine that will be trialled in about 400 koalas. USC professor of microbiology, Peter Timms, says the vaccine can play a significant role in the long-term survival of koalas, especially in southeast Queensland, where chlamydia affects 50 per cent or more of the koala population.

“The vaccine has now passed phase one and phase two testing that has established that it is completely safe and produces a good immune response and a good level of protection,” he says.

Former Australian Defence Force personnel on the Sunshine Coast will have the opportunity to come together with their mates for a free visit to one of the Coast’s most loved tourist attractions. o, I don’t think so!” In her 21st year of performing, comedian Fiona O’Loughlin will not be retiring. Instead, she has forged ahead with a whole new thread of material. This time around, at 58-yearsold, Ms O’Loughlin says she is preparing for a fabulous third chapter of life, and much of this optimism is due to her recent diagnosis of attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

suggests not. Similar to the decades of positive responses the mother of five has received from the shows where she bares her soul and challenges, including her fight with alcohol addiction, the audience is connecting with the fresh insights and truths that cross-stitch together this comedy of errors.

Reviews have noted that the book contains bolder content than ever before. However, the comedian qualifies this by saying, “It’s funnier than ever, there is a lot less handwringing. There are some really

Born in Adelaide to an AustralianIrish family, Ms O’Loughlin married her now former husband, dentist Chris O’Loughlin, in 1985 and together they had five children. It was during the 1990s, while living in Alice Springs, she began writing a column for the Centralian Advocate and emceeing cabaret shows at the Araluen Arts Centre.

By 1994, she was doing a weekly radio segment on the ABC. On the outside her career was glittering, but then in 2009 she collapsed on stage at a Brisbane show and her battle with alcohol addiction was brought into the spotlight.

“I’ve now been sober since December 17, 2019,” she tells My Weekly Preview.

Despite the ups and downs, her creativity and audience appeal has seen her become a favourite Australian personality. She is a regular at the Melbourne International Comedy festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She has also appeared on television shows such as Spicks and Specks, Rove Live, Good News Week, All-Star Family Feud, Studio 10, The Project and others.

In 2014, she was the subject of Australian Story, where she spoke about her struggle with alcohol, and in 2018, she showed off her survival skills,

competing in and winning the reality television show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

Ms O’Loughlin received her ADHD diagnosis by accident. She has regular neuro examinations due to some frontal lobe damage from having suffered blackouts from drinking.

“But thankfully, nothing that affects my comedy,” she says. “It has given me a glimpse of my mind.”

She says she has learnt a lot about herself and best of all, now forgives herself for her failings.

“I look at myself and think, ‘you poor thing, no wonder you drank’.

“I see that alcoholism doesn’t make up the full picture of my life – it’s about 20 per cent of the picture.”

Ms O’Loughlin believes that the universe hands you a bill for your life and this diagnosis has allowed her to come to terms with hers. The ADHD medication has also meant she is now more fully able to sustain her focus. As a result, she was able to sit down for five hours and compose the material for her new stage show.

Of course, it would have been wonderful to have been give an earlier diagnosis, but the ever-optimistic comedian is delighted to know now and reckons this knowledge will only add to an even better third chapter of her life.

A risk worth taking Writer and local business owner Julie Holland has drawn inspiration from her own life changes to create her engaging novel That Summer in Nautilus Cove. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

W

hat do you pack to pursue your dream, and what do you leave behind? That’s the big question behind Noosa author Julie Holland’s new book.

This narrative, familiar to many of us, asks whether we are ready to take the leap and risk losing the comfort of the familiar, to find out if the grass really is greener on the other side.

At a certain age, after a lifetime of building family, friends and lifestyle, to take up this challenge there can be a great deal of things to farewell, for instance

ageing parents, adult children, emotional ties and life-long physical locations.

When it comes down to it, Ms Holland says to think about this: “Well, what would happen if you didn’t do it?” The answers are plentiful and, of course, it all depends on the person and circumstances.

However, if you don’t take the risk, one of the scenarios is living the rest of your life with a brain full of simmering ideas that have never been brought to life. On the other hand, if you take the plunge and transform those ideas into reality, well, rather like Ms Holland, you could have the foundation for a colourful book.

Ms Holland is a 65-year-old business owner, wife and mother of three sons. She says her own life has definitely provided some of the storyline in her recently released book, That Summer in Nautilus Cove. But it is not an autobiography, instead her natural curiosity about people is conjured up, developed and woven into the narrative of her novel.

“Yes, my own story of moving to Noosa after the children left home and taking the risk of buying a retail business has helped to shape the story,” she admits. “Greg [my partner] and I had never been in retail.”

Twelve years ago, complete with a little trepidation and a big desire for adventure, Ms Holland said yes to her dreams. And sporting plenty of gusto and ambition, moved from Victoria to Noosa.

She started a creative retail business in Hastings Street, while socially she set about finding new friends and networks.

Although she left much behind to make way for the new, she brought along her life-long creative writing habit. Earlier in her life she published two children’s books and more recently a book of verse.

The move served to further harness her passion for creative writing and giving her the storyline for a novel. Ms Holland acknowledges the research tool she uses to add colour and vibrancy to her characters requires spending a good deal of time people-watching. “I often sit in cafes with

my laptop and write descriptions about the people I see passing by,” she says.

From these jottings and her own life, the author has created the protagonist of her book, a lady named Marnie Fawkner.

Marnie is fed up with the demands of adult children, job hunting and property priorities. If she could live her dream, she would snap her fingers and change everything. It turns out she doesn’t have to snap her fingers. Instead, an opportunity arises when her sister Libby proposes that she house sit in the beachside paradise of Nautilus Cove, in Queensland.

In a ‘why not’ moment, Marnie accepts the request and from there the fun, the risks, the fraught moments of delight emerge as other opportunities challenge her to take the road less travelled and pursue her own dreams.

Ms Holland says in some ways, you could describe her contemporary style of fiction as a voyage of self-discovery. It’s about the value of risk-taking and opening up to your full potential – no matter what your age.

WHAT THE ENERGY CRISIS MEANS FOR AUSTRALIA Global energy prices – coal, gas, oil and uranium – have jumped on a confluence of factors. Energy prices are expected to stay elevated for the rest of this calendar year, but in our view, the demand and supply side responses that will follow should eventually ease the pressures.

The implications for Australia are so far minimal given the global energy crisis is not being replicated here.

The reasons for the recent acceleration in a range of energy commodities vary between regions, but largely it comes down to a confluence of demand- and supply-side factors: • Lockdowns lifting – With vaccination rates rising, there has been

a more material easing of pandemic restrictions. In recent months, for example, the US, the UK and Europe have all eased travel restrictions significantly. This has seen mobility levels increase and, with it, the demand for fuel.

• Seasonal conditions – Also contributing to high demand is the scramble to secure heating fuel supplies ahead of the northern hemisphere winter.

• Fuel switching – As prices of thermal coal and LNG have risen, demand has shifted to cheaper alternatives such as oil.

• Supply ‘outages’ – OPEC+ last year cut oil production in response to the pandemic and only around half of that has since returned. In August, Hurricane Ida caused significant damage to US offshore oil infrastructure, leaving production offline for longer than normal. Supply from alternative sources, primarily renewables, have also disappointed – droughts have caused weak hydro generation in Brazil, and wind power was reduced in Germany and the UK. • Decarbonisation policies – Exacerbating the shortages are policies to lower carbon emissions. A shift to renewable fuels has left the system more

exposed to intermittent power sources and the risk of price spikes. Government mandates to switch from coal to gas power have also increased gas demand.

Meanwhile, less investment in coal mining and production, and a ban on imports of Australian coal, have intensified the problem for China – the world’s largest consumer of the commodity.

Australia is not currently experiencing an energy shortage like our overseas counterparts. Prices are higher globally, but at the moment there is no supply crunch domestically. That said, some businesses are more leveraged to

changes in global prices (especially oil and coal). Higher global energy prices are an obvious positive for the exporters of coal (for example, Whitehaven Coal and South32), oil (for example, Santos and Oil Search), and gas (for example Santos and Origin Energy). Higher prices are negatives for oil users companies like Qantas and mining companies.

DID YOU KNOW 412,768 square metres of rehabilitation road works have been delivered by Council’s Civil Asset Management team between July 2020 and June 2021! The $19.6 million works resealed and rehabilitated 53 kilometres of roads. From these works: • 100% of waste material generated during resurfacing works was recycled and reused; • 6,500 tonnes of asphalt laid was made from waste products including recycled tyres and glass, equivalent to 4680 repurposed tyres; • 140,000 litres of bitumen was poured; • 379,746 tonnes of raw material was saved by using on-site material during road rehabilitation.

Footfall, a professional dance development program, has just kicked off with eight emerging dancers from SEQ participating.

Facilitated by Courtney Scheu, the program takes an in-depth look into contemporary dance and includes a host of prominent mentors from the area.

Footfall is part of DANCE HERE NOW, a three-year dance development initiative led by Council to build the region’s dance sector by creating more opportunities to experience dance across the region.

OP SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre’s op shop is in desperate need of more volunteers to help keep the funds flowing. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

shortage of volunteers at a local community centre is making it increasingly difficult to meet the demands of residents who require essential support service.

Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) is desperately looking for volunteers to run its op shop.

Derek Hooper from MNC says it has been difficult to find volunteers for the op shop, which is still trying to get

off the ground since it opened in March last year.

“We got lots of support at the centre, but now we need the ancillary support in the op shop, which will actually help run the OneRoof program,” Mr Hooper says.

“COVID got the momentum of the op shop off kilter.

“We were just starting to get it off the ground and it fell flat on its face with the first lockdown and the subsequent ones since, and the restrictions.”

Mr Hooper says the op shop is the main funding channel of OneRoof, which MNC runs at the centre every Tuesday and Thursday evening. “[The project supports] the needs of the homeless and marginalised in the community, including international students cut out of the casual work market, people who have lost jobs because of COVID-19 and those struggling to put food on the table because of intolerable rises in rental costs.

“To be able to run this project we fundraise and receive a small grant from Unitywater to partially pay a co-ordinator that runs the program on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.”

The OneRoof hub provides cooked meals, fresh produce and clothing as well as services including Orange Sky Laundry, OzHarvest, Salvation Army finance and budgeting support, haircuts, Sunny Street medical services, family support services, counselling, and alcohol, drug and mental health support.

Currently open Tuesdays and Thursdays, Mr Hooper says with more volunteers, the op shop can expand to Wednesdays and inject around $450 per week to support OneRoof, which receives no government funding.

Twenty-two thousand people walk through the doors of the busy centre each year, including staff, volunteers and those seeking help. There is currently a team of 80 volunteers working across a variety of programs from the commercial kitchen to urban farm, family support and admin roles.

Op shop volunteers need to be available between 10am and 2pm, with no prior experience necessary.

INTERSECTION UPGRADE A busy Maroochydore intersection is set for an upgrade. Designs are being finalised for improved pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Beach Road, Maroochydore Road, Horton Parade and Ocean Street.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the design includes a new signalised crossing on Beach Road to Ocean Street. “The Maroochydore CBD is growing rapidly, and we’ve made it a priority to provide safer access for people walking to the nearby bus station, shopping centres and entertainment precinct,” he says.

Mr Bailey says the department is in the process of finalising the upgrade designs, which will involve improving the existing signalised crossings on Maroochydore Road and Horton Parade. He says the design also includes new fencing along the Horton Parade median from Ocean Street to Cornmeal Parade to encourage people to use the safer crossings.

NEW ORGANISATION LEADS THE WAY FOR COAST WOMEN An organisation established to connect, encourage, educate and empower women to become leaders in the community has launched on the

Sunshine Coast.

WomenKind Australia has been founded by businesswoman Josanne Falla as an evolution of networking and education group The Noosa Circle.

“Our first project as the new organisation was the Mingle with the Mayor Ball, which raised $280,000 for counselling and support services in Noosa Shire, delivered by experienced Sunshine Coast operator SunnyKids,” Ms Falla says.

“Going forward, our goals are threefold – to raise funds for women and girls to be supported in their quest to take on leadership roles in the community, to assist local charities who offer services our women need, and to create education opportunities for women and girls.”

In addition to the annual Mingle with the Mayor fundraiser, the organisation will run monthly education and connection events.

WomenKind will also provide ongoing mentoring and support for women stepping up to create positive change in the community and ensure no woman is excluded through lack of opportunity or financial means to realise their potential.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart has been named patron of the organisation.

The eight-kilometre walk begins at 8am from Mooloolaba Surf Club and heads to Maroochydore Surf Club and back, or to Alex Surf Club and back for a four-kilometre walk. A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Jane Stephens says Christmas preparations need to start earlier this year, as we ready ourselves for the border to reopen.

The CMO has said that worse-case scenario, we will have 1200 daily cases next year, but it is more likely to hang around the 400 mark.

It will be a brave new world for us and we have to be ready.

Lost in the cacophony of social media-disseminated vaccination misinformation is the essential titbit that while those of us who are fully vaccinated might get sick, we are unlikely to need hospitalisation.

But we will all be exposed to COVID-19 and most of us will get it.

So this year, more than previous ones, requires planning for Christmas.

We need at least 80 per cent of the population to be double dosed and have their immune systems firing by December 17. When we get there, restrictions will be in our rear-view mirror.

The government is even saying we won’t need to wear masks, but I reckon having hand sanitiser and a festive-themed face mask on hand will be a good idea, just to be on the safe side. At Christmas lunch, it will be more a case of pass the roast veggies but please hold the side of COVID, if you don’t mind.

A week before Christmas Day, fully vaccinated people from other states, even if they live in a hotspot, will be allowed into Queensland without quarantining.

It will be heart-swelling, joyous stuff for many. I know hugging my West Australian daughter will be a present in itself.

Queensland is a trailblazer in its opening plan. The states with active outbreaks have outlined how they will live with COVID-19 in the future, but Queensland is the first ‘clean’ state to lay down specific timelines for allowing the virus in.

Our Chief Medical Officer has warned us repeatedly that the virus that has so affected the southern states will ride shotgun as people cross the border.

I

recently took a walk along Maroochy River, reliving my childhood from the ’60s and I uncovered some great memories. I had such a good time, I decided to do it again, but this time it was Eudlo where my family originally moved to in 1918 and then my Dad started his own place in 1949 at what is now Robinson Road.

On impulse, I drove out and parked at the Eudlo shop where I was a star customer from 1961–1971 because we had an account and I was partial to Samboy barbecue chips and Coke. Dad had told me it was exactly one mile from our home to school, so I thought I would test that out on my steps through the past.

As soon as I started, memories came flooding back. I remember getting a packet of chips and whingeing to Mum that there weren’t many chips in the packet, just air.

So dear old Edna wrote a letter to Samboy.

As I turned the corner into Robinson Road, I remembered being eight and seeing a station wagon leaving our road. I got home and there was Edna with a massive carton of barbecue chips. Woo-hoo, one happy little fat kid.

As I walked up what we used to call red hill – as it was red dirt back in the day – I also remembered it wasn’t unusual to get picked up by a passing farmer’s truck and thrown up on the back, bike and all, and dropped off at the front gate. As I got to our former house, I looked at my GPS and realised Dad had got me – it was actually 1.2 miles. So every day for 10 years I had been walking or riding nearly half a mile.

I remembered at about age 10, I buried a time capsule at the bottom of the hill, but I couldn’t remember what was in it; probably empty Coke bottles, chip packets, model planes, plastic soldiers and marbles.

Then there was the hill on Ilkley Road that the neighbour’s kids used to push Dad’s old truck up when it was fully loaded with pines, until he saved enough to buy a nearly new Bedford that could get over the hill unaided.

Probably the best part of my 2021 walk was remembering when they bitumened Robinson Road and Clive Plater made my Mum feel so special when they had a ribbon-cutting ceremony nearly 50 years after my late Dad cut a track in there. That was even better than the Samboy chips.

BREAKING UP WITH BOOZE Sami Muirhead has become sober curious as she reads up on the damage being done to women’s health by our obsession with drinking.

H

ave you seen the plethora of books on the topic of quitting drinking alcohol? Quit Lit is the new black.

I am currently reading Quit Like A Woman: The Radical Choice To Not Drink In A Society Obsessed With Alcohol by Holly Whitaker. The book is genius. It is part science (a brutal reminder that alcohol is ethanol, and we are drinking that stuff, which is like the same stuff we fuel our cars with); part a funny memoir of the author’s own battle with drinking; and part mind-blowing insights into our society, where drinking is considered the cornerstone of cool.

It has made me a little sober curious. I love a wine. I love a champers. I love a gin and tonic. I love a cold beer. But I must admit, I use alcohol to celebrate the victories and to lubricate the tougher days. I almost wish I could un-read parts of the book, because you start to realise it is mums who are probably the most targeted market when it comes to pushing the message that alcohol is the best way to celebrate and commiserate life.

I have tea towels that scream: “Yes way, rosé!” I have a magnet that says: “It’s not

drinking alone if the dog is home” and I have a wine glass that screams: “Coffee, on the bench: Alcohol, suit up!”

Women are against the marketing machines of the world and the billiondollar companies that want us to buy their booze. Remember when smoking was touted as a really cool thing to do? It hurts me to admit it, but this alcohol-obsessed culture is hurting women.

Am I an alcoholic? No. Do I use alcohol as a crutch? Absolutely. It is quite simply hard not to drink. There are a dozen or so other brilliant books about the relationship with women and alcohol including Glorious Rock Bottom, and Girl Walks Out Of A Bar. The conversation has commenced, and I want to hear more. I don’t want to quit drinking, but I am at least thinking about what exactly I am consuming and feel like my blinkers have come off.

We drink at baby showers and birthdays, we knock back a few at Friday knock-offs at work, we sip at graduations, funerals, weddings, because it is mid-week, at book club and at brunch. Wow! The list is long.

So, I am trying to swap a few wines for cups of tea this week and I clearly need some new tea towels and magnets.

‘SMART CAREERS’ THE WAY OF THE FUTURE

rimary School students at Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim are excited to explore and learn in their newly opened $1.3-million Wonderarium.

The Wonderarium learning centre has been designed as a place of wonder, awe and curiosity.

It is part of the five-year Flinders Masterplan to construct a suite of agile contemporary learning spaces for the College’s 1370 students from Prep to Year 12.

Other newly opened Masterplan facilities include the Flagship Centre for Years 5 and 6 students, and the Year 7 Precinct for students in their first year of Secondary School. A state-of-the-art Design Centre is next.

The Wonderarium is wholly funded by the College’s philanthropic Flinders Foundation.

Head of Primary, Mrs Trudi Edwards says the new Wonderarium would welcome students from Prep to Year 6 to explore their creativity in a tech-rich environment of literature and adventure.

“The space has been designed to challenge our young learners to explore new ways of seeing, perceiving, understanding and engaging with their world,” Ms Edwards says.

“Students will have access to the latest technology and a curious environment and will also encounter literature and works of art that will challenge and excite them,” she says.

“New Wonder Lessons, known as

Wonderations, have been specially curated by our Head of Information, Literature and Resource Services.

Special presenters will deliver hands-on experiences for students, and training for teachers, to encourage them to take up a job in the emerging fields of the future.

It’s part of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Make Integrate & Explore (MIE) Lab project, a federally-funded program.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says the program will play a big role in making the Coast the place to be for education, employment and retirement.

“As we look forward from COVID-19, we need to diversify our local economy and that means encouraging growth in new sectors like cutting-edge healthcare and high-tech manufacturing,” he says.

“The coming decades are going to see more of these smart jobs of the future here on the Coast, and this federally funded project is going to make a big difference to ensuring that we have the young people in our community ready to take them on.”

The funding will extend the reach of the MIE Lab program to engage with 5000 more students across 50 additional schools, around the Coast and surrounding regions.

The funding will also support the presentation of 15 STEM-focused career education workshops for parents and carers in the region.

MIE Lab Coordinator and USC Lecturer, Natalie McMaster, says the expansion of the MIE Lab program would make a big difference for students, teachers and parents alike.

“USC’s MIE Lab program inspires Year 4 to 10 students to engage with science and technology education, to think about where a career in STEM could take them and to believe in their ability to get there,” she says.

“We are excited to get started using this Federal Government funding to expand the program’s reach right across the region.

KIDVESTING SIGNALS DIVIDE, SAYS ECONOMIST If parents thought homeschooling, refereeing squabbles and feeding everyone snacks 15 times a day was enough to get their kids through lockdown, they may have thought wrong.

Turns out, if they weren’t simultaneously building them a share portfolio to rival Gordon Gekko’s, they might have failed them.

A staggering 270,000 children under 12 across Australia are now estimated to have active share portfolios in their names, according to recent research by comparison site Finder.

It is a trend senior economist at Centre for Future Work Alison Pennington puts down to “pandemic era financing”.

After central banks flooded global economies in the early days of the pandemic, dropping interest rates to record lows, those with money sitting in the bank had to think of another way to make it work for them.

Some invested in real estate, while other cashed-up households threw their savings into share accounts, often in their children’s names.

As a result, better-off households will emerge from this ruinous few years with their kids set for life. Countless more will end the pandemic era disastrously worse off than they went in, deepening the intergenerational wealth divide.

“There are massive implications because clearly not everyone has the spare cash to be throwing into investments,” Ms Pennington told AAP. “We’ll see, in this pandemic era, increasing levels of inequalities between households.”

With 1.7 million people receiving government disaster payments and more taking pay cuts, losing work and struggling to make ends meet, the concept of having extra money to invest is laughable to many.

“There are hundreds of thousands of kids growing up in poverty who ... will never have surplus income to be throwing into investment accounts,” Ms Pennington said.

As economies grapple to salvage themselves over the next few decades, the implications for children without portfolios, savings or any real job prospects are damning.

Alison Pennington “This is Depression 2.0,” Ms Pennington said.

“We want to prevent falling into the same levels of poverty and destitution as the 1930s but it doesn’t look like governments are serious enough about the spending and investing, and taking leadership that’s required to stop that happening.”

The pathways to a good job, income and security are hard to find, thanks to the labour market crashing. Youth unemployment is more than double the adult average.

For those who can’t tap into the ‘bank of mum and dad’ the prospects are grim, Ms Pennington says.

“As a parent looking over that environment, you would, of course, be doing what you can to increase the financial security of your kids into the future. But for a poorer person, these avenues don’t exist.”

The cafe program’s great success has been a catalyst for STEPS Pathways College’s newest program, created to meet both the immense demand for the college and to help students further expand their skills.

The new STEPS nursery program offers its students the chance to gain horticultural skills in the renowned STEPS nursery. Students have the chance to learn everything from nursery retail skills to how to grow and harvest vegetables.

The space also helps students learn while practising their social skills, all while supported by a specialist trainer.

The program has been running for five weeks but has already had a huge uptake.

“It has been so encouraging that the nursery program has created so much interest,” the program’s trainer, Gaenor, says. “The students have been engaging in a variety of nursery tasks and developing knowledge of horticulture and safe work practices.

“It’s wonderful to see their confidence increase while having fun and developing an incredibly useful skillset.”

Carers That Drive (CTD) was established in 2009 and is now in its 12th year of operation in New South Wales. CTD has recently extended its network to include the Sunshine Coast.

CTD is an NDIS registered provider, offering a unique service – CTD matches at least three regular supporters per client. CTD has a great community reputation with kind, friendly, reliable and, most importantly, punctual supporters. These supporters always strive to support their clients in developing skills to live happy and independent lives.

Just a casual walk at the local beach often lifted their spirits and mine. It was nice to still be out and about connecting with people through this time.”

CTD also welcomes pets. If clients have support animals, they’re welcome to travel in the car too. Similarly, some supporters have dogs they can bring along if a client would like to spend some time with an animal – anyone who is an animal lover knows how nurturing some time with a pet can be.

NDIA CHANGES WILL IMPROVE EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILIES The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has this month published a progress update about changes to improve the way the NDIS is supporting young children and their families.

Following a three-month consultation on proposed recommendations to reset the early childhood early intervention approach, the NDIA is now making changes to deliver an improved experience for young children and their families seeking support, guidance or access to the NDIS. This includes renaming the approach to supporting children younger than seven and their families to the ‘early childhood approach’, and publishing new, easy-to-understand operational guidelines.

It is the first time the NDIA has had a guideline specific to children, outlining how best practice support helps to get the best results for children younger than seven and their families.

The NDIA has completed four of the recommendations, which were well received by the disability community.

recommendation is clarifying the interpretation and application of the developmental delay criteria, which will support NDIS partners and staff to have clear guidance to make decisions and recommendations, and will support families to better understand developmental delay and developmental concerns.

The fourth recommendation is to develop an early connections guideline, to be published this month, to outline how the early childhood approach can support families and young children to reach their full potential, including a combination of family education, early supports and connection to community.

These changes will simplify the way we talk about support for young children and their families and how we improve support for families and children when

they no longer need the scheme.

The changes are part of the NDIA’s ongoing commitment to ensure families and carers have information that improves their knowledge and confidence, so they can make informed decisions about what supports are most likely to benefit their child’s development.

The progress update outlines which recommendations were supported and which have been completed, and those that the NDIS is still working on, as well as the time frames around the changes.

It also shows the recommendations that were not fully supported, and plans for those recommendations.

The agency thanks participants for their feedback on the consultation paper in helping to shape improvements to the scheme.

A service connecting NDIS participants with the care they need is asking support workers to declare their vaccination status amid concerns raised by the disability royal commission.

Kynd, a Queensland-based service that partners the disabled with specialist care, has added a vaccination tick-option to its online worker profiles. More and more NDIS participants are requesting support workers who are COVID-vaccinated, says company spokeswoman Tiare Leahy.

“It is a concern for some people, especially those who might have an elderly parent or a compromised health condition themselves, but for others it’s not an issue.”

The move follows a damning draft report last week in which the federal disability royal commission found the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines to people with disabilities and their carers has been “seriously deficient”.

It warned too many lives will be endangered if states ease restrictions once they hit 70 per cent double-vaccination targets in the national plan to reopen Australia. Without all disabled Australians and their carers fully vaccinated, the former face “significant risks to their health”, the commission found.

FRESHER AIR AND MORE SPACE ON THE CARDS FOR LARGER BUILDINGS Sustainability and the pandemic create clashing interests when it comes to unit design. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

O

ver the past 20 months, lifestyle as we did know it has changed due to the pandemic and climate change concerns have also impacted on living choices – and the Sunshine Coast is not immune to those changes.

BRD Group managing director Brad Read who works on the design of multiresidential and commercial buildings sees these two key issues conflicting.

“The pandemic is driving people to have bigger units with bigger external areas as opposed to if you are talking cost of living, that would generally drive unit sizes down – and sustainability,” he says. “So, from our perspective, we see the two in conflict. One is driving up sizes. One tends to drive sizes down.”

Overall, Mr Read hasn’t seen a demand for wholesale changes in the design of residential and commercial complexes. It’s been more about subtle design changes.

Some of BRD’s clients are now wanting units designed with a minimum of 250 square metres and more.

Botanica. Inset BRDG’s Brad Read “If you went back two, three years ago, we probably wouldn’t have been doing that. We were doing big units 10 years ago and then that decreased and now we are going way back up again.”

The most recently completed Botanica in Maroochydore, reflects this change with 16 units of about 300 square metres, large outdoor areas, and expansive outdoor areas.

“Common zones are being broken down into multiple zones rather than one big zone,” Mr Read says.

ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning requirements,” he adds.

The newest vertical retirement complex in Maroochydore, which is currently in the design phase and has in mind a younger entry age than has historically been the case, will have increased unit indoor and outdoor areas, flexibility in its larger open spaces and common areas.

On the commercial front, due to the challenges around availability of building products, more thought has gone into how buildings are being constructed. BRD is also working into its new commercial designs more space in the workspace.

“We are very aware of not having a call-centre type approach,” he says.

His design team are working on larger workspaces and incorporating balconies to improve the quality of the staff’s working area.

“I was surprised by the sale price given both neighbouring homes recently sold for far less than today’s sale price,” Mr McNamara said on Saturday.

for Next Property Group’s Richard Scrivener who had listed 9A Mooloolah Drive in Minyama. While there were two registered bidders, no bidding occurred for the five-bedroom home, which sits on a prestigious street, just back from the main canal.

Straight after the auction, Mr Scrivener was able to secure the sale for $2.025 million to a local couple moving back from the waterfront, downsizing to enjoy the low maintenance house.

But during last week, Mr Scrivener had his work cut out for him while he secured two major pre-auction unconditional sales.

After chasing several other Coast homes, the buyers of 8 Greenway Place were excited to have finally secured this house. Their original plan was to purchase a house and rent it out until the border opened. But now that border restrictions for fully vaccinated interstaters have been lifted, they will move to the Coast in time for Christmas.

Seven bidders were chasing the spacious four-bedroom house with expansive outdoor living areas. Only three of them were known to Ray White agent Dan

with its north-facing ocean views, sold to a Brisbane buyer for $3.3 million. “It’s a fantastic result,” Mr Scrivener said. “It was bought from us in 2015 for $1.9 million.”

There was plenty of buyer competition during the listing period, but the owner decided not to wait until the auction when he had a committed buyer in place.

“In the most desirable street in Mooloolaba” said Mr Scrivener, the west-facing 9 Carwoola Crescent broke another local record. In a street where sales are rare, the four-bedroom house sold for $4 million.

A local Mooloolaba couple, who wanted to be on the deep water side of the popular suburb, secured themselves a new family home. “They wanted to be there and weren’t prepared to lose it to anyone,” he said.

The house was last sold under a year ago for $2.4 million.
