From the editor You would be hard-pressed to find an Australian child who hasn’t heard of the Treehouse book series penned by Aussie author Andy Griffiths.

They’ve become a staple read in our house, and with more than 10 million copies sold, I can confidently say that we aren’t the only family who know and love the quirky and creative characters of Andy and Terry.

orm Provan was the ultimate rugby league gladiator, in every sense of the word. A rangy 193-centimetre second-rower who won 10 premierships at St George, he was immortalised as one half of rugby league’s most iconic image.

Provan was living in a nursing home in Caloundra before his death, aged 89 on October 13. He was the developer behind the Oasis Resort which he started building in the late ’80s and sold in 2012.

For younger fans, Provan was one half of a comedic duo that appeared on Dally M night alongside his sidekick Arthur Summons from that memorable photo, and the NRL trophy.

As Provan claimed in one of the pair’s last public appearances together in 2016, it felt like he would “be around forever”.

For older fans and rugby league lovers, he was revered as one of the finest players.

After debuting for the Dragons in 1951, Provan scored 63 tries in 256 games for the club and represented Australia in 18 Tests

His perfect record in 10 deciders between 1956 and 1965, as part of the Dragons’ 11 straight, is matched only by teammate Brian Clay.

The last four of Provan’s titles came as captain-coach, confirming his status as one of the game’s greats.

Born in the Riverina and knocked back

by Eastern Suburbs in 1949, Provan will forever remain the most capped player in St George’s history.

His career was noted as “the most remarkable of all” by historians David Middleton and Ian Heads, in the 2008 Centenary of Rugby League book. “‘Sticks’, as he is known, is a giant of the St George story,” the pair wrote.

“The firm, fair leader of a legendary team, it is right and proper that a fine oil painting of his gazes down from a position of prominence in Saints’ Leagues club.”

Provan was made the game’s 13th Immortal in 2018, decades too late in the eyes of many given his towering status on

the field.

“We’ve always looked up to dad. He’s always been immortal to us,” his daughter Sue McLeod said accepting his induction on his behalf. “To have him receive this, especially now, means an awful lot to all of us – and to him.”

In reality though, Provan was immortalised into the fabric of the game 55 years earlier and in the moments after the 1963 grand final.

Spotted by former Wallabies player and Winfield marketing man Gary Pearse in 1981, it was picked as the design to go on the Winfield Cup as part of the game’s rebranding the following year.

Provan, who had been involved in anti-tobacco campaigns, agreed, on the proviso he would not be associated with smoking and the trophy would not be linked to cigarettes.

“In many ways (the image) encapsulated the deep culture of the sport,” Pearse told AAP last year.

“It says a lot of things. It says resolution

of conflict. It says big man, small man, it says rich clubs and poor clubs.

“But most of all, we had two blokes who were not only great players but great Australians.”

Summons died last year aged 84, but the league will ensure the pair’s legacy and story is known for generations to come.

“We have lost one of the genuine legends of our game,” ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys said.

“Norm was revered for his leadership and his courage as a player – but also his incredibly humble, kind and genuine nature as a person.

“Sadly, the game has now lost both of our ‘gladiators’.

“But our Provan-Summons Trophy will live on as an acknowledgement of Norm and his good mate Arthur.

“Norm Provan remains an iconic and crucial part of the St George’s rich history,” St George District chairman and St George Illawarra board member Craig Young said.

“Norm was instrumental in St George’s great run of 11 premierships, a feat we will never see occur again.”

SHAPING CALOUNDRA Norm Provan was instrumental in helping to shape the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.

He was an active member of the Caloundra community, and together with wife Lindy, developed one of the town’s largest tourism drawcards – the Oasis Resort (now known as Oaks Sunshine Coast Oasis Resort), located in Golden Beach.

The Provans sold the resort in 2012 and in 2014 sold their 52-acre Diamond Valley home and property and relocated to Caloundra.

TIME FOR kids to be kids

It’s a wonderful world we live in, says beloved children’s author Andy Griffiths, who is encouraging all kids to put away their devices and get out exploring. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

I

nternationally acclaimed author Andy Griffiths has one message for children – put down your screens and experience life for all its wonder.

If Mr Griffiths had been drawn into a world of tablets and mobile phones in his childhood, the Treehouse book series would never have been conceptualised and become the international phenomenon that has spanned 11 books and 10 million copies in more than 35 countries.

Mr Griffiths, who regularly visits the Sunshine Coast on book tours, credits his unbridled creativity to a “magical” childhood spent “freewheeling and free ranging”. It allowed him to see the world as full of limitless possibilities. “[Australian author] Morris Gleitzman once said that children’s authors are a breed of human for whom the window between childhood and adulthood remains open,” he says. “It makes it easy for us to access those moments in life and the feelings that come with being a pre-pubescent child where imagination has no boundaries. It supercharges what we can create.”

The “we” is Mr Griffiths and his partner in crime, illustrator Terry Denton. They have collaborated on more than 33 bestselling books since their first title, Just Tricking, was published in 1997. The 13-Storey Treehouse was released in 2011 and their latest, The 143-Storey Treehouse, was released earlier this week.

Mr Griffiths is a passionate advocate for literacy. In 2015 he was awarded the Dromkeen Medal for his contribution to Australian children’s literature. He is also an ambassador for The Indigenous Literacy Foundation and The Pyjama Foundation.

His quest to get more books into young children’s hands was sparked when he was a schoolteacher. He had two choices when dealing with his students’ reluctance to read – give them a lecture or come up with something outside the box. “I ended up giving them ridiculous things to read, stories that I made up, photocopied and stapled together for them,” he says.

“Reading is a legitimate pleasure in itself that involves a very intimate game between the author and the reader. It’s a game of let’s pretend, let’s make believe.”

Seeing the delight the students took in devouring his tales prompted Mr Griffiths to seek out a career in publishing children’s

books, which was a process of trial and error before he struck gold with Mr Denton.

“Reading for me was an escape hatch to wonder, mystery and excitement. This drove me to writing specifically for kids.

“This is the voice that came through and it suited the students I was teaching at the time. I wanted to write books that would convince the modern generation that books were not some old technology that could be replaced by film and TV.” Mr Griffiths worries creative pursuits are being squashed by the increased use of screens by the younger generation.

A report released by Reviews.org in April found Australians spent an average of 5.5 hours a day on screens, equating to 33 per cent of our waking hours, or a whopping 17 years across a lifetime.

This number is significantly higher the younger the person, with members of Generation Z, who are aged between nine and 24 spending more than seven hours a day looking at screens.

While this surprises Mr Griffiths, he says he has never been a “technophobe.”

“The boring truth about everything is that you need balance,” he says. “If you have something in excess, it is going to squeeze the time for things like physical movement, the quiet contemplation that reading brings and unstructured time, which is when creativity comes out.”

University of the Sunshine Coast Associate Professor of Child Development and Learning Dr Michael Nagel agrees.

The author of several books, including new releases It’s a Girl Thing and Oh Boy!, says adults need to play a more active role in monitoring the amount of time both themselves and their children spend on devices – even so-called educational apps.

“A study published in 2015 sarcastically noted that of the 80,000 ‘education’ apps the researchers examined, the vast majority amounted to nothing more than ‘digital candy’… great to get you hooked on but with little substance in terms of learning outcomes. Sunshine Coast artist Peter Evans Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published a report noting countries that had invested heavily in technology had shown no signs of improvement in reading, maths or science. OECD head of education Andreas Schleicher went on record saying, ‘the reality is that technology is doing more harm than good in our schools today’.”

Dr Nagel says excessive screen use can be linked with various types of addictive behaviours along with physical, social, psychological and neurologically adverse consequences.

“Key components in potential adverse consequences include duration of use, content accessed, after-dark usage and media type. In scouring the ever-expanding lists of studies related to screen effects, the story being told is worrisome… with physical effects including, but not limited to, poor sleep, risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, obesity, poor stress regulation and insulin resistance.

“Now put this into the context of a brain that isn’t fully developed until we are in our twenties and there is reason to be concerned. The problem, however, is we just don’t know exactly how much time is too much time as we can’t set up a controlled experiment to see at what point screens start to do any damage.”

With his extensive knowledge, Dr Nagel recommends aside from TV, which is a

passive device, no screen time for children under the age or two and from then throughout primary school, no more than an hour a day at home.

“Probably the only real benefit is when a device can be used to connect with others, which has become more prominent during the pandemic, but as we are seeing being with people in real time is better than linking up virtually,” he says.

There is a great deal of evidence showing the importance of creative arts in boosting academic outcomes over and above being tech-savvy, Dr Nagel adds.

“If we were sincere in boosting outcomes, we would take the money used to resource technology and use it to ensure all schools have ample resources in art, music, dance and drama. The creative arts are a far better gateway to doing well in school in comparison to screens.

“Reading for pleasure is also important, as is downtime or time to just be a ‘kid’.”

This is all music to the ears of Palmview artist and teacher Peter Evans. “I absolutely agree the creative arts are vital for children’s development because it boosts creativity, hand-eye co-ordination, risk taking, concentration, self-expression and communication skills,” Mr Evans says.

“We have three kids and I fully understand the issue of screen time that parents deal with, particularly in the school holidays. It does become their default entertainment when they can’t think of what to do with their spare time and parents are working from home also.

We often get the ‘I’m bored’ line and my answer is always, ‘Good!’ Because that’s when you can be your most creative.”

Mr Evans says there is a place for technology, particularly in modern careers such as IT, graphic design and robotics, but the arts can help boost confidence in kids who struggle academically. “I see first-hand the growth in confidence in kids who pursue their creativity through art or other avenues,” he says. “Any support parents can give to these kids will only help them flourish through life.”

Treehouses a hit with readers The release of The 13-Storey Treehouse in 2011 marked the beginning of a golden era for Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.

After working through a variety of formats for books aimed at ages eight to 12 with what Mr Griffiths now calls “questionable humour”, they hit the sweet spot with the Treehouse series. This style of children’s book was inspired by the likes of Dr Seuss and Norman Lindsay’s The Magic Pudding, which were favourites of Mr Griffiths’ growing up.

“At some point, people decided that pictures were for babies, but I think that was a wrong turn,” Mr Griffiths says.

“Pictures enhance storytelling rather than being a crutch.

“Not only that, but it makes books accessible to kids so they can inhale the detail without having to plough through hundreds of words. It was frowned upon by publishers when we first started out.”

In each book in the series another 13 levels is added to the treehouse and when the duo gets together to brainstorm ideas, Mr Griffiths says they

bounce off one another, with his stories inspiring Mr Denton’s drawings, which then inspire new and fantastical ideas for the storyline.

“Of course, my wife Jill is in there as well, letting us know when we are getting too silly and forgetting about the reader because we are too busy entertaining ourselves,” Mr Griffiths quips.

“Our improvisation is followed by a series of brutal rewrites and editing to get the balance just right… it is a deceptively long process, taking around a year to achieve a style where we can tell a complex story in as few words as possible and allowing the drawings to do the maximum amount of storytelling.”

The series started off as a trilogy, but with The 143-Storey Treehouse now hitting bookstores – the eleventh in the series – Mr Griffiths has hinted that maybe they will cap it off at book 13. “That may be the point in which we sail off into the sunset.

“There will definitely be something else on the horizon. We just never want to get to the point where we overstayed our welcome.”

ophie* was just nine years old when her brother Mark* sexually abused her for the first time.

The youngest of four children and the only girl, she felt isolated and alone. Too scared to speak up, Sophie suffered in silence as the attacks from her eldest brother became more brutal as the years passed.

Not long after she turned 16, Sophie

plucked up the courage to tell her parents.

She poured her heart out and merely skimmed the surface of the horrors she had endured. But they did not believe her.

Far from confronting Mark, who was eight years older than their daughter, they sent Sophie away to boarding school.

Their reaction was a devastating blow,

but sadly Sophie’s story is far from a unique incident. More than 15,460 Australian children were sexually abused last year. It is a figure that grows every single year and one that Tracey Morris and Sunshine Coast-based charity No More Fake Smiles (NMFS) are working hard to reverse.

An even harder pill to swallow is the

high percentage of parents who do not believe, or choose to ignore, their children when they disclose abuse at the hands of a relative. Ms Morris is one of the few who did believe her daughter, Annie Jones and took immediate action.

When Mark fathered a baby girl with his partner two years later, Sophie knew she had to act. Emboldened by a drive to protect her innocent niece, she reached out to Annie, the co-founder of NMFS, over Instagram.

AGENDA Sophie created a fake account to talk anonymously to Annie and slowly began to open up. It took her 12 months before she felt comfortable enough to reveal her real name and ask for help to press charges against Mark.

Sophie was then 18, had graduated high school and was working three jobs to support herself as she was no longer welcome in the family home. Mark, on the other hand, had the full support of both of his parents.

Ms Morris stepped in as an advocate for Sophie, educating her on the process that lay ahead and how to navigate the system to protect her mental wellbeing as well as follow the huge array of complicated processes. Mark was charged in October 2020, but half of the charges were thrown out due to lack of evidence.

Feeling more empowered than ever, Sophie made a second statement and dug deep to share as much detail as possible, which is an emotionally draining process.

But her bravery resulted in a further eight charges being added to his rap sheet.

“The change I have seen in her since we first connected is massive. She is feeling a lot stronger in herself and more prepared to navigate the legal process, which is so overwhelming for anyone, let alone a young woman with no other adult support,” Ms Morris says.

“It is hard when you have these professionals who are asking you to make quick decisions about things that can affect the rest of your life. She’s learning a hell of a

lot of hard lessons very young, but she is becoming more equipped to do that without buckling to pressure.”

Sophie is also accessing therapy, which is fully funded by the charity.

“When she first came to us, she didn’t want to know about therapy. Most teenagers don’t. But she has now started going to cognitive behaviour therapy group sessions and is also considering one-onone psychology, which is a major breakthrough and one that will help her to heal and lead a more fulfilling life.

“She has gone from not even wanting anyone to know her real name to openly talking to me and becoming more empowered to speak to the lawyers and detectives and stand up for her rights. Her case and seeing how she has evolved and become a stronger person is the essence of everything we do and why we do it.”

If Sophie had not found NMFS, the consequences could have been dire. The Federal Government’s Child Family Community Australia 2013 report into the long-term effects of child sexual abuse include a 2.4 times increased risk of mental disorders, a 10 times increased risk of suicidal thoughts and a 15 times increased risk of suicide attempt.

“That’s why we exist,” Ms Morris says.

“That’s why we want people to get the justice advocacy support they need as well

as the therapy to help their mindset and emotional wellbeing. We want them to have both now and not have to go on a waiting list to get the help they need. If they have to wait, they could take their own life while on that list.”

Earlier this year, the charity realised their goal of establishing a $25,000 therapy fund so they can connect victims and their families immediately with the type of therapy that best suits their needs.

The event includes sunset cocktails, a three-course dinner and live entertainment to raise funds for their Justice Advocacy so they can continue to assist victims across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa council areas to navigate the criminal justice system and lessen the risk of re-traumatisation by providing adequate support.

Certainty in an uncertain

world Keith Abraham’s public speaking career was halted overnight when COVID hit, but he bounced back, and now he’s got some advice for others who feel out of control. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

s a global keynote speaker on high-performance leadership and business growth, Keith Abraham has spoken to 1.7 million people in 33 countries over the past 25 years. But when COVID hit, even he was stumped. His public speaking engagements ground to a sudden halt and he found himself having to put his money where his mouth is and adapt.

“I’d normally be speaking at 100 conferences a year and be booked 12 months in advance,” he says. “My conferences cancelled in the space of 10 days. I thought, what’s going to happen? I had a big drink and said: ‘You know what?

Where there is chaos and confusion, there is also opportunity.’”

Being a solutions-focused kind of guy, he set about researching home studios to see if it would be viable to take his business online. “I did about 40 hours of research into studios – I’d never needed one before.

“I built a studio and now there isn’t a border in the world that I can’t cross with relative ease.

“Last year, I presented in 29 different countries to about 32,000 people and never left home. Some weird things happened.

One job was with a company out of Zurich.

They had people turning up from Rio, Dallas, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Bangkok, Mumbai, Zurich, London and South Africa.

“Something really funky was I got a call from a guy in South Africa. He said he wanted me to present virtually for his conference in the US, but would need it at least three months before. I asked why and he said it was for a big Amish community.

“He said they don’t do anything with technology and they’d have to send it to the elders, they would have to review it, translate it, approve it and then run it like a movie in one of their community halls.

I thought, s**t, I’m big in the Amish community now.”

Mr Abraham has observed businesses who have struggled through COVID and those who have adapted and says those who have struggled have sat back and

waited for things to change. “The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is adaptability, clarity of direction and absolute intensity of focus – blocking out all the distractions,” he says.

“One of the things I say to people is they need to starve their distractions and feed their focus. What has tended to happen in the last little while is people have fed their distractions and starved their focus. A lot of what you’re watching in the media is just noise. All you can control is two things: how you react and how you respond.

“People get p***ed off or joyful or sad or confused – that’s all understandable. It’s what you do next that matters. What I’ve seen for the people who’ve been successful during crazy times is they’ve had a mindset around, okay, what’s next, how do I adjust, what can I control.”

One of Mr Abraham’s pet topics for discussion is how to set and achieve goals, but that’s been difficult – if not impossible

– for many people during the past 18 months. “Where there is uncertainty, chaos and calamity, people need clarity,” he says.

“It’s hard to have a long-term goal when you really don’t know what’s going to happen around the corner. I talk a lot about having long-term goals.

“My suggestion at the moment is to have clarity around what you can control…

We don’t know what’s going on with vaccination rates, borders opening up – it’s all totally out of our control and it can totally mess with your mind because it’s a different story every other day. With that, you have to come back to what you can control in the days and weeks ahead.”

The Brisbane-based speaker will be presenting at the upcoming Shine Business Women’s Step Up! Conference, which organiser Zoe Sparks says is a huge bonus for the Sunshine Coast. Instead of jetting off around the world, he’ll be driving up the Bruce Highway to impart his pearls of wisdom to Sunny Coast business women.

“When I speak at Shine, it will be all about goal achievement,” he says. “I’ve done a fair bit of research around what stops people achieving their goals, what drives them forwards, what pushes them to do the uncomfortable and inconvenient.

“I’ll be talking about what accelerates the process and what slows the process down, how people can achieve their goals easier and sooner than they thought possible. Everyone walks away with a blueprint of how to achieve their goal.”

Painting a brighter future Local artists came together to help a group of young men paint a mural for Headspace Day on October 6.

hen a group of young men came together to express their ideas on how to support their age group and gender’s mental health through artwork, they came up with big, deep and thoughtful concepts. Fortunately, they had a space big enough to illustrate these ideas, Headspace Day, on October 6, is a national day of support for the mental health and wellbeing of young Australians.

To mark the occasion, Headspace Maroochydore and its lead agency Youturn Youth Support, together with Kawana Shoppingworld organised an urban art group project for young men aged between 12 and 25.

Mr Cadd says he came to the project with no idea of what would be expressed.

“Sally and I got together with the young people to orchestrate the mural and find out what they wanted. It could be anything.

“It turned out their ideas were about community, connection and support.”

The mural depicts a vibrant colour palette which reflects youth, energy and positivity, and features Kawana wildflowers along the coast and hinterland region. The central focus and hero image of hands reaching out, represents the idea of connection and community.

Headspace CEO Dr Tanya Bell explains: “Through initiatives like this Urban Art project, we aim to help build resilience, develop social connections, and inspire young men to talk openly and have a voice on issues important to them.”

The size of the mural prompted Ms Sculley to lament the physical act of painting a mural saying that while Crossfit, volleyball and swimming keep her fit, painting a mural is another form of exercise itself. “I’m applying to have it accepted as an Olympic sport for 3032,” she jokes.

“We are more than just education,” Mr Cadd says, and goes on to relate how in

y situation became life or death. It had got to the point where he was no longer able to restrain his temper.”

A Sunshine Coast woman who feared for her life at the hands of her husband is sharing her story to send a message of hope to others.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld, could not see a way out of an abusive and controlling relationship with her then-husband of 24 years.

With three children, life was good until depression set in for her husband, which

triggered years of “foul moods” to a point the woman ended up with a brain injury.

“I have experienced every type of abuse there is: physical, verbal, mental, emotional, financial and spiritual. Being timed for how long you go out. Told what to wear, the food I had cooked thrown back at me – plate and all – blamed for things you did not do. Left at hospital to come home with your new baby in a taxi by yourself, just to name a few things.

“My colleagues at work could see the bruises, and stress I was under. I was terrified of leaving even though my injures included a bleed on the brain.”

Scared to seek help and unsure where to turn, it was her boss who called the police to her work one day. The women and her three children were placed in a women’s shelter before it was decided they would live with a relative 200 kilometres away.

October marks Queensland’s Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM). To coincide with this, Sunshine Coast-based DV Safe Phone is calling on individuals, businesses and community groups to donate phones and funds as part of the One Phone, One Life campaign.

The mobile phone is often the first thing to be destroyed, taken or monitored in a domestic violence situation, leaving many victims with no way to call for help.

Having a second phone hidden away is an important part of a victim’s safety and exit plan. It also provides security with the ability to call for help in an emergency.

The woman, who escaped her relationship more than 16 years ago, says it would have been a lifeline to have an emergency phone. “It would have made a huge difference.

“You must understand that the person you are living with is a control freak; they check up on you all the time. Who did you talk too? What did you say to them?

“They check the phone numbers on the phone bill both home and mobile. They monitor your social media, that is if you are even allowed to have it. This person is in total control of your day-to-day life.

“So, to have a secret phone they don’t know about – literally a lifesaver.”

DV Safe Phone founder and CEO Ashton Wood says recently published figures reveal one in two women and one in four men have been sexually harassed since the age of 15. “Tragically, one in six women, and one in nine men reported physical and/or sexual abuse before the age of 15 and this is something no child should ever endure,” Mr Wood says.

In recognition of escalating demand for safe phones due to extended COVID-19 lockdowns, DV Safe Phone is spearheading the national campaign for the October phone and fundraising drive.

“It has been great to see millions of dollars being invested to increase capacity to support victims, many who are tragically now trapped at home with their perpetrators,” he says.

“Our target for the month-long campaign is to support an additional 1000 victims by raising an additional 1000 working mobile phones, each accompanied by a $15 donation to purchase phone credit when the phone is sent out.”

The woman is encouraging everyone to “save a life”. “Donating phones is a downto-earth way of making a difference to the family next door without even knowing it.”

She also donated $1000 towards Bloomhill’s aim of exceeding its $25,000 target for the month.

Bloomhill Cancer Care’s wellness centre in Buderim currently supports more than 315 women who are receiving care with breast cancer diagnoses.

A successful Sunshine Coast business woman is supporting a cause close to her heart this Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

When Sally Doran’s mother, Helen Gibson, was diagnosed with the form of cancer in 2020 at age 73, it was the beginning of a frightening and uncertain time. “I was really afraid,” Ms Doran says.

“It’s scary – it’s the unknown. And to think of my dad having to do without her, it makes you contemplate all these really big things.”

Ms Gibson successfully underwent surgery to remove the cancer but endured several life-threatening complications after preventive chemotherapy.

“She was in hospital a lot, and it was in the middle of COVID [lockdown],

COOLUM TENNIS CLUB GETS FUNDING WINDFALL Coolum Tennis Club recently scored a major win, securing $35,000 to resurface two grass courts.

Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie celebrated the announcement with the club this month, congratulating the organisation on its success.

“The club has been working hard to expand and improve their facilities, with even more exciting plans on the drawing board,” Mr Purdie says. “This is an exciting time for the club and the local community, who are set to benefit from all the improvements.”

The money was funded through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) and Coolum Tennis Club’s secretary Susan Beaton says the upgrades will hugely benefit those who use the facility. “Better facilities at our club mean attracting and

retaining more people to tennis – a game for all ages and abilities to build social connections, feel healthier, have fun and enjoy competitive or social play.”

This announcement comes on the back of facility upgrades delivered earlier this year, including four new acrylic-surfaced hard courts surrounded by new fencing, LED lighting, new nets, kitchen upgrade, landscaping and seating to the centre.

The club runs junior and performance squads as well as social activities.

Project update for stage two of Albany Lakes Park Playground

Amid scones and laughter, a new era is dawning at the Bankfoot House Precinct with the recent unveiling of a patio at the Mary Grigor interpretive centre, as well as new pathways and a retro paint job for the old house.

The unveiling began with Bankfoot’s much-loved event, Sconetime, where more than 100 guests celebrated with conversation and scones.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski says the addition of the patio will allow the Sunshine Coast Council to hold more all-weather events at the heritage precinct.

“Bankfoot is becoming known for its regularly sold-out heritage-inspired events and the addition of the undercover patio makes such good sense in our

climate,” Cr Baberowski says. “Visitor numbers have increased nicely over the years, especially with group and school bookings, so formalised pathways, including benches to sit and enjoy the property and its stunning view of the 28-million-year-old Glass House Mountains will, help provide a more relaxed and accessible experience for all.”

The project, which included seeking the advice of heritage experts before repainting the exterior of the heritagelisted Bankfoot House to take it back to its 1950s colour scheme, was funded by the Heritage Levy.

Bankfoot House is at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains and is open from Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Consultation with the Sippy Downs community through the Sippy Downs Parks Master Plan in 2018 showed overwhelming support for a new playground at Albany Lakes Park, with more play opportunities and better car parking. I’m pleased to see the community already enjoying all that the new Albany Lakes playground has to offer, with the stage one works providing an exciting new location where children can play. Thanks to Queensland Government’s $100 million South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program, extra funding has been provided to support construction of stage two of the Albany Lakes Park playground. This significant funding injection will support construction of large shade sails, which is expected to be

I regularly receive queries from locals about the proposed road-link connections in and out of Palmview. Eventually there will be a few new road links in and out of Palmview, with the timing for construction of each new road triggered by the number of new houses and residents moving into the community. Under the Infrastructure Agreement, and as the land developer, AVID property group must deliver a range of major infrastructure items including the major road connections, recreation parks, sports fields, environmental land rehabilitation/open space and community facilities. The Bruce Highway is funded by the state and federal government and therefore it is a state government condition that AVID must deliver the Bruce Highway connection by June next year. I look forward to AVID constructing this necessary road link along with the rest of the infrastructure that is required to be delivered as the development progresses for the community of Palmview.

NOMINATE FOR POINT CARTWRIGHT GROUP Nominations are now open for a Sunshine Coast Council Community Reference Group (CRG) to contribute to the development of a masterplan for the Point Cartwright Reserve and La Balsa Park area.

Division four councillor Joe Natoli says the reference group will provide a forum for the community to offer input into the future planning and management of the coastal area. This will include an analysis of the site, current uses, understanding environmental opportunities and constraints, values and vision, ecological sustainability and proposed actions, priorities, and costs to be considered for implementation.

“To do this, we need to speak with the community and listen to their views and needs so we can ensure a safe, shared space and preserve our natural environment for years to come,” Cr Natoli says. “We’re at an early pre-planning phase and we want to gain a more detailed and a factual understanding about how the area is being used.”

The group will play a vital role in shaping community engagement, sharing project information and, importantly, providing an insight into the challenges and opportunities in the area.

The CRG will consist of an independent chair, up to 10 community members and councillor representation. Members are expected to attend four meetings with their role equating to approximately two to six hours per month.

The grand opening of the Nambour Museum’s long-awaited Post Office display is ready to be delivered this weekend.

The new purpose-built display is designed to replicate many of the principal features and services offered at the original Nambour Post Office, which was located on Currie Street.

Local mail services in the town date back to 1885 when Mathew Carroll established the Petrie’s Creek Receiving Office from a bark hut on his property near the current showgrounds site.

With an expanding population and improving communications facilities, the post office moved around town several times. Following the installation in 1908 of a single trunk line telephone service for

public use, public pressure mounted for a purpose-built facility and the official Nambour Post Office became a reality in 1910. It served the community until the new Lowe Street building opened in 1976.

Nambour Museum has revitalised its extensive range of Telecom displays in conjunction with the design and outfit of the new stand-alone Post Office Display.

It is hoped the changes and exhibits will generate memories for older visitors, while giving the younger an insight into past communication methods and technological advances.

The doors of the Museum Post Office display, which was built with funding support from Sunshine Coast Council’s community grants program, will officially open on October 23 at 10am.

Nambour Museum is at 18 Mitchell Street and is open Wednesday to Friday 1pm to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm.

Adults tickets are $5, children are $1.

Nourishing the soul

Established on the Sunshine Coast just over 12 months ago, Silver Tongue Foods has developed a reputation for creating superbly delicious sourdough crackers, pickles and jams – the perfect accompaniment to any cheese board.

FAB FOOD Established by the industry for the industry, the Food and Agribusiness Network is a not-for-profit food industry cluster that has been operating for six years with more than 300 members from across the food value chain in the Greater Sunshine Coast region. Silver Tongue Foods founder Kristina Kucan knows good food, and she isn’t afraid to share it.

Her beautiful organic products – think sourdough crackers, spiced orange preserve, raspberry jalapeno jam and fennel and orange pickle – are fast becoming a staple on Sunshine Coast grazing tables and plates.

And when Ms Kucan talks about her products, which she says nourish the body and soul, you can’t help but want to sample the goodness.

Established in 2020, it’s been a busy year for the Silver Tongue Foods team.

“We are in the process of finishing our first round of upscaling, which will increase our capacity and allow the business to grow,” she says. “We have had so much support from the business community, including the Food and Agribusiness Network. People are really encouraging.

“All of our products are hand baked and hand packed. It really is a labour of love.”

Silver Tongue Foods started from Ms Kucan’s love for freshly baked sourdough, and she says her passion for baking comes from spending long summers as a child working alongside her uncle in Croatia, learning the traditional art of baking by hand.

“I was born in Croatia and we came out in 1995 following the civil war. We used to go back because all our family were over there. My uncle would spend time with my sister and I teaching us how to bake. These are now family recipes that have been adapted.”

It was COVID that drew Ms Kucan back to her passion for baking. She lost her job in the first week of lockdown and turned to her kitchen as a form of therapy. “There was sourdough bread everywhere, crackers and donuts. We thought, what do we do with all this food?

“My intention for the business is to be the premium and local cracker of the Sunshine Coast” My partner took it into his workplace. It started out as baking for his colleagues and grew from there.”

The more she baked, the bolder she grew, creating more recipes, and eventually asking the team behind Coast company Cheese Therapy for their opinion.

“We dropped our product off [to them] at 12pm and by 12.30pm we had our first wholesale order. So, we thought, let’s do this.” A supporter of local, everything is made without preservatives, and the ingredients are sourced locally, which highlights the beautiful produce coming out of our region. “My intention for the business is to be the premium and local cracker of the Sunshine Coast.”

MAKES: 10 medium fritters | PREP: 20 minutes | COOK TIME: 20 minutes The corn fritter can be found on every breakfast menu and is the ‘go to’ for every indecisive cafe order. We decided that this iconic breakfast item needed a much-deserved revamp. Who would have thought the humblest of frozen vegetables, the pea, would be the inspiration to reboot this cafe classic. Barambah feta is the absolute star of these fritters. You can taste the quality; it is what makes them so delicious.

1. Remove excess moisture from zucchini by either pressing firmly in a cheese cloth or just using your hands.

2. In a mixing bowl combine zucchini, peas, herbs, spring onions, feta, flour, eggs and salt and pepper to taste.

3. In a small bowl whisk yoghurt, lemon juice, paprika, honey and olive oil. Place in fridge until required.

4. Heat coconut oil in fry pan on medium heat, drop large tablespoons of mixture into the oil and shape into fritters with the spoon.

Shallow fry on both sides until brown and crisp. Then, lift onto a plate lined with paper towel and continue the process until all the mixture has been used.

5. Serve with yoghurt sauce.

I

am blessed on both sides with the best neighbours a person could wish for. We are friendly and know each other well enough to share news of life’s big events, have a laugh and an occasional drink. We also respect privacy and don’t crowd each other.

We tolerate each other’s lively social gatherings, renovations and firepits on weekends, and trust each other to keep an eye open for odd bods lurking if we know the other household is away.

Perhaps I love my neighbours more because I know what it is to have difficult ones, and because it is accepted that most neighbourhoods are the distant, walk-onby kind and mine is not that way.

You know the ones — those who duck past opportunities to help and ignore a sniff of trouble because we have been sold the idea that if does not involve us, it does not concern us.

But to that I say humbug. Other people’s lives do sometimes involve us because our society is as strong as our weakest link. Sometimes all it can take to help someone in trouble is simply asking if they are okay.

The recent Mental Health Awareness

Week highlighted that never has there been a time when we needed community more.

For 50 years, there has been a recognised psychological phenomenon called the bystander effect. It has been proven that in the modern era, individuals are less likely to offer help when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will approach or help.

Several factors contribute to the bystander effect, including the diffusion of perceived responsibility and a lack of community cohesiveness.

Neighbours and neighbourhoods are the cornerstone of community and in my experience, good ones are gold.

Our neighbours in recent years have shared nourishing chats, beautiful baking and interesting community information.

They have stepped in when we forgot to close our garage door and fed our fish in our absence. We return the love too, and so a community is created.

In this world of looking in on people’s lives via social media, people increasingly step back instead of forward. But the peace and safety of a community relies on trust, reciprocity and compassion.

y Mum always told me when I went out to make sure my undies were clean and I had a handkerchief because her theory was you never know when you might end up in hospital. I mostly took that advice, apart from the other day when I had a very long stint at work from about 3am until 3pm. It was Sunshine Coast Marathon day and by the time I got home, I felt like I had run in it.

Old mate went out to do some shopping and I got changed and did the vacuuming and split the fork in my board shorts. When she came back, I decided to ride my bike up to the bottle shop to get a beer and correct – I didn’t change my shorts. Also, I had no undies on. I thought, what could possibly happen in a less than two-kilometre round trip.

So up I went and on arrival, realised I had left my mask at home, but thankfully right beside the counter they had a box of them, so I leant over and grabbed one just as a boofhead told me masks were useless and it was all bullshit. My first thought was to say, “Are you a doctor in your other life, because you look like a concreter?” But I

weighed up the no-undie thing and decided to just laugh at his funny joke.

The lady beside me said something I didn’t catch, but the COVID expert did and away it went.

He got quite aggressive but she wasn’t copping it and I was basically in the middle and all I could think about was, “If this bloke knocks me out I am going to be transported to hospital with no undies on and a fair chance of some part of my anatomy hanging out, which should keep all the medical staff amused”.

He ended up walking outside where he had two other mates with him and I walked the lady to her car where she then proceeded to tell her husband what the genius said to her, so then he fired up. I then weighed up leaving him to sort it or hang around so I sort of did half. I waited while everyone sledged each other and then rode off in between them, my theory being if I leave my helmet on he has less chance of knocking me out, but if he does maybe I can leave it on so nobody recognises me?

I am sure Mum would have had a laugh in between telling me I told you so.

ou are a Lyrca girl, or you are not. I am not. I have only recently forced my lumps and bumps into some long Lyrca tights because I have forgotten to go to the gym for seven years. It is time to try to lose the extra kilos. It is possibly good timing as my radio partner (Todd) and I are cycling around a makeshift velodrome for six hours in high heels as part of a promotion called Heels on Wheels.

We are trying to raise money for Montrose Respite and Therapy Services. We are both proud ambassadors for Montrose.

Back a few generations, Montrose helped kids left in hospital with polio. These days they have 200 families on the Coast alone who rely on Montrose for things such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. My son went to Montrose for a few years and I have seen first-hand they also help you through the NDIS funding web, they suggest certain equipment that may help your child, and they are just good people who really care and really want to make a difference.

They are trying to raise enough money to deck out a new sensory room with equipment and toys to make it a little easier for the kids to do their therapy. It is those

kids who are the real heroes here. Many of them have autism or cerebral palsy or have been born with rare conditions that make things as simple as walking or talking a massive struggle.

There is nothing sadder than a sick kid.

I met little Finn this week who has been going to Montrose for 12 months. He is three years old and has autism, is struggling to learn to walk and is non-verbal. He is also a cheeky little monkey who has the most beautiful brown eyes and a big smile to go with them. Finn’s mum said Montrose has helped them so much by guiding them through the overwhelming list of therapies to do and specialists to see. I know from first-hand experience when you have a therapy kid there are never enough hours in the day and you are often second-guessing if you are doing enough to help your precious child.

So, wish us luck. The heels will be a breeze as I have walked in heels for decades. The Lycra is a different story. But six hours of embarrassment is nothing compared to the guts shown by many of the Montrose kids every single day. “We had a home on a big block with lots of gardens and swimming pools and we got fed up with looking after it all.”

LIFE COST CONCERNS ‘Well off’ retirees will need to spend around $78,000 a year to keep up with cost-ofliving increases and maintain their lifestyle.

Even ‘constrained’ couples will have to budget for an annual outlay of $45,000.

Compiled by senior Australia Institute economist Matt Grudnoff, the June quarter data illustrates the growing challenge for older Australians trying to ensure their retirement income lasts as long as they do.

A new national survey of more than 7000 candidates suggests not all are as ready as they’d like to be for the road ahead.

Of more than 4500 respondents, in planning for life after work, 55 per cent said they managed the process themselves, 30 per cent engaged the services of a financial advisor and 7.5 per cent got help from friends or family.

More than 85 per cent of respondents said they felt confident as a retiree, while 45 per cent had no problem keeping up to date with retirement income information and 40 per cent conceded they did some of the time.

The research, conducted for over 50s digital publication YourLifeChoices, was broken down into data sets for self-funded retirees who own their home, home owners who receive an age pension and pensioners who rent.

HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD? You may be interested to learn that 120 decibels of Beethoven does just as much damage to your hearing as 120 decibels of Metallica. It is not the type of sound that damages the delicate hair cells of your inner ear, but the amount of sound.

Sadly a large proportion of the gentlemen we see in the clinic

have some noise damage, also known as industrial deafness.

While a lot of the damage was done when hearing protection was not considered essential, you would be surprised how many people continue to expose themselves just working in the garden or home workshop.

Damage to your hearing from noise exposure is permanent.

Hearing protection is readily available and cheap, so make sure you use it.

Generally speaking if you have noise-induced hearing loss you will need to consider hearing aids. There has been a large amount of research and development applied to technology that helps industrial deafness. The first step is, of course, a hearing test at a clinic.

You can usually get good advice on hearing protection at the same time.

A WHOLE IN ONE AT 101 Sunshine Coast local and avid golfer Mary Haddon is taking her greatest swing yet towards her 101st birthday this October 29 as she celebrates on the green with her nearest and dearest.

Ms Haddon, who has been hitting golf balls for more than 60 years, is a regular at the Maroochy River Golf Club where she meets up with her friends twice a week to keep active and play a few rounds.

While golf is mostly about enjoying the outdoors and socialising, it’s not all fun and games for Ms Haddon, who played competitive tennis for 15 years and admittedly has a competitive streak.

“All sports I have played have been competitive; my husband thought I would never be able to give tennis up, I absolutely loved it,” she says.

“Playing golf is a really great way to stay active and connect with others – it’s definitely a part of my week that I look forward to greatly.”

As a resident at Lutheran Services’ Immanuel Gardens Retirement Living in Buderim, Ms Haddon has ease of access to the golf club and joins fellow residents to take rides on the buggies and practise their technique.

Immanuel Gardens service manager Carmel Freeman says connecting through sports and keeping fit is one of the best ways residents can look after themselves – mentally and physically.

Patients with symptomatic hip and knee osteoarthritis will often ask me if they should have joint replacement surgery.

This decision comes down to a balance of risk versus benefit.

Considerations in this analysis include the severity of the pain, the impact on their quality of life, activity profile, age, other health problems, as well as having appropriate attempts to manage the problem non-operatively.

If the potential risks are higher than the potential benefits, I will inform patients they are not a candidate for surgery. We will then have a long conversation about the non-operative measures they can take to improve their quality of life.

When patients are candidates for joint replacement surgery, I always present the non-operative options as well as inform them about the risks and benefits of the surgery.

It is never for me to tell patients when it is the right time to have elective surgery. This is an intensely personal decision with so many factors. Only the patient knows when the time is right.

Varicose veins are common, may ache and be unsightly. If left untreated they can cause bleeding, blood clots and skin ulcers.

Varicose veins can be treated with injections, thermal ablation or traditional surgery.

Open surgery for varicose veins usually involves a tie or stripping of the veins. The stripping operation may still provide a better outcome for patients with very large veins. Stripping removes the main superficial vein in the thigh through a small incision in the groin and the inside of the lower thigh. At the same time the varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. This technique involves a light general anaesthetic and a day or overnight stay in hospital.

Bandages applied at the conclusion of the procedure are removed the next day and compression stockings fitted.

Time off normal activities is usually five to seven days. The stocking is worn for 14 days.

People often confuse a neurosurgeon with a neurologist. These two specialties treat brain and spine disorders, but are quite different. So when might you be referred to a neurosurgeon or a neurologist?

Neurosurgeons possess specialised training to operate on the brain, spinal cord and nerves. This could be due to brain injuries, tumour removal, or nerve impairment causing pain or numbness in a patient’s arms or legs and relatively common conditions such as sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome. Meanwhile, neurologists diagnose, treat and manage neurological conditions.

A neurologist will refer patients to a neurosurgeon when surgery is required, and a GP will refer to either specialty depending on patient needs.

In addition to the more widely known physical benefits, massage therapy offers support for the parts you can’t see, but can certainly deeply feel.

Our physical bodies, as well as our emotional and mental states, are affected in different ways during treatment for any medical condition. Feelings of frustration and impatience become a daily occurrence and self-esteem may decrease over time when you’re unable to do (or wear!) what you had previously done with ease. Lack of quality sleep due to treatment side-effects can exacerbate these feelings.

Combine that with discomfort or pain from scarring, lymphoedema, peripheral neuropathy or limited ranges of movement and imagine the impact this has on relationships.

APRA CHANGES FORCE REDUCTION IN HOME BORROWING CAPACITY APRA’s new regulation will make borrowers reconsider what they can really afford. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

T

he Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s change in the assessment interest rate has sent shivers through parts of the property industry but in reality, it should only affect a few mortgage holders.

Some people with pre-approvals and anyone applying for a mortgage from November 1 will be impacted by APRA’s requirement for authorised deposit taking institutions to increase their assessment of all new applicants’ ability to meet their loan repayments up to three per cent above a loan’s product rate.

Coast mortgage specialist Brenden Brial of SMS Finance doesn’t expect this decision will cause a rush of loan applications during the next few weeks.

“I also don’t know that it will slow people down,” he says. “But it will make people reconsider what they can buy.”

From November, a person who signs up for a repayment rate of two per cent for example, their lending institution will assess whether the borrower has the

capacity to still make the repayments at a rate of five per cent interest within the given term.

This approach isn’t new; lending institutions have always had a minimum floor rate Mr Brial explains. “It was only about 18 months ago that they [APRA] actually lowered it to 2.5. The floor rates are set by individual banks based on their own procedures. Some of them already are using more than 2.5 per cent.”

Possibly owner-occupiers will be impacted by the APRA decision more than investors who have been coming into the market as they take advantage of the boost in their own home’s value.

So, while the market continues to rise investors will likely keep buying into property. “This increase in the interest rate buffer means that they might have to reconsider the value of the investment property they are buying,” Mr Brial adds.

LOCALS BATTLE WITH INTERSTATE BUYERS AT AUCTIONS A busy auction weekend saw huge interest from interstate buyers wanting to relocate. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

LENGTHY AUCTION ACTION Auctioneer Justin Voss had his work cut out for him during the auction of the original condition, three-bedroom house at 6 Moondarra Crescent in Mooloolaba.

“It was the most exciting auction I have been at,” listing agent Melissa Schembri of Next Property Group said. “Poor Justin had sweat dripping off him. It was a battle between a local and buyer’s agent for an interstate buyer.”

What kept the auctioneer under pressure during the 45-minute auction was 80 bids. Back and forth between the two buyers the price crept up at times by only $500. “It was like the ultimate tennis match” Ms Schembri said.

The locals won the ‘match’. “They had a baby with them that needed feeding during the auction,” she added. The final price under the hammer was $1,452,500.

BUDERIM STILL IN FAVOUR It was a crowded auction at 23 Mill Road in Buderim on Saturday, with 18 registered local and interstate bidders.

“That was an absolute beauty of an auction,” Ray White agent Jake Loiero said.

“Bidding started at $825,000 and went up really, really aggressively over $1 million and finished at $1.07 million.”

The buyers will be relocating from Bondi Junction in inner Sydney.

“The house is close to everything – shops, schools – everything that a family needs,” Mr Loiero said. “The property embodies what it is to live on top of Buderim.”

STREET RECORD IN BUDDINA Completely renovated with modern fittings, and located around 400 metres from the beach, the three-bedroom house at 18 Ilumba Street, Buddina attracted buyer interest from interstate, overseas and from locals. “I think the overseas buyers just wanted to find out was going on,” Code Property Group listing agent Ben Wilson said. Three registered bidders chased the prized house, which sold under the hammer for $1.65 million to a family from Brisbane.

Regulated dog inspection program Sunshine Coast Council will be undertaking a regulated dog inspection program between 1 November 2021 and 31 October 2022.

The purpose of the program is to conduct a compliance audit at premises within the region where dogs that have been regulated under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are being kept. The Act requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries.

The program will work to ensure animal owners are adhering to the mandatory conditions for keeping a regulated dog to reduce the risk posed by these animals.
