It hasn’t been easy for me to secure a COVID vaccination. Under the age of 40, and a non-essential worker, I am identified in the low-risk category. Earlier this week, news broke that the Australian Government has brokered a deal with Belgium and secured one million more doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Poland is reselling the doses on a non-profit basis – kudos to them!

These doses will be allocated for people aged 20 to 39 – half for New South Wales’ worst-hit suburbs. I am patiently awaiting my invitation from Queensland Health and will be rolling up my sleeve for the Pfizer vaccine when my time comes.

Everyone is entitled to their freedom of choice, but I will say this: if you are sitting on the fence about receiving your vaccine and are not convinced either way, talk to your doctor. Have that discussion with someone

who has studied and worked in the field, and be sure to make an informed decision. Factual information is key. In this week’s feature, we take a look at the available vaccines. It’s an interesting read – turn to page 10.

I am grateful to live in a world where the greatest minds can come together and work as one for medical improvement and development. It seems I’m not alone in this.

Shades of Vietnam AAP

In Kabul’s ‘Saigon moment’, Australia faces the shame of repeating its mistakes exiting the Vietnam war.

cenes of mayhem unfolded at Kabul airport on Sunday night, as foreigners and Afghans try to flee Afghanistan following the seizure of the capital by the Taliban. What we saw — with the airport remaining open and the Taliban talking in benign terms about the governance of Kabul — echoes what happened in Saigon in 1975, as the United States and its allies exited the Vietnam War. Then, there was a fight north of the city but the North Vietnamese forces didn’t roll directly into town.

In that moment, there was a hiatus — a window of opportunity to leave. A brief moment for extraction of US personnel, their allies, including Australians, and the local people who helped them, before the final takeover of the city occurred. The way things have unfolded in Kabul, with the airport remaining open, speaks to a level of collaboration between the Taliban and the US government in its negotiations about how US and coalition partners would be able to extricate themselves.

Whether Australia can extract its people — particularly the Afghans who helped us and are now in grave danger — remains to be seen. In Saigon, the window of opportunity was open for just a matter of days before it slammed shut.

There is considerable moral responsibility for the Australian government to continue to try to get out as many Afghans who helped us. In Saigon in 1975, Australia basically turned its back on locally employed staff and refused to

repatriate them. Many people feel a bit ashamed about Australia’s attitude back then. That may have informed the attitude of our government in recent weeks. Bowing to pressure, it has agreed to work toward extricating hundreds of Afghan people who have worked for us. What is concerning is we haven’t gone hard or quick enough. There is a number of people who remain vulnerable, worried about being earmarked as collaborators if they stayed.

Eyewitness reports at the airport speak of up to 1000 people trying to board a plane designed to take 300. It is worth noting that a lot of aircraft can take more people than they are designated for if they don’t fill the cargo bay with luggage. It’s not very safe but for some, it’s safer than staying in Kabul. Australia, a bit late in the piece, has ramped up forces to go in and help extract people who are associated with Australia’s presence there over the past 20 years.

It’s worth noting that Kabul airport is quite vulnerable.

It’s surrounded by hills, from which Taliban with ill intent can create havoc. That’s why the US has talked about deploying extra troops to support the extraction.

Turkey, which is still technically a NATO ally but is also a Muslim democracy that is seen as more palatable for the Taliban, has promised to provide security at the airport in Kabul as the Americans and their allies leave. So there’s an arrangement for a transition out and we will see whether it comes to fruition. More broadly, what we have seen in

Afghanistan in recent weeks is a vast military power being clearly outfoxed by a Taliban force that, materially, is significantly inferior. Yet in terms of morale, resolve and endurance, the Taliban has clearly outmatched the US and its coalition partners, including Australia.

The saying, “you have the watches but we have the time” speaks to a problem we were not able to address.

The Taliban’s smooth talking has seen city after city give in without a fight, despite having been equipped in a way that shows, on paper, the Afghan security forces on the ground should have been able to defeat the Taliban.

But in battle, morale is three to one to physical force and the morale just wasn’t there. If you don’t have soldiers and police resolved to defend and hold off the Taliban, it’s worse than useless. Because now the Taliban is replete with American high-tech drones and sophisticated weaponry.

There’s another dimension to this which is important for the future: what all this means for America’s fighting resolve.

In 1975, there was a sense that America’s pullout from Vietnam represented a major catastrophe and a failure of the West’s ability to hold off Communism. But in hindsight it seemed like that was just a low point. The Berlin wall still eventually fell. There was also a sense in 1975 of the US and its allies being untrustworthy, that they leave people behind and that this will cause would-be allies not to trust them.

Perhaps there’s an argument that this exit from Afghanistan throws up similar issues. Others will argue it is a case of the US and its allies seeing reason and cutting their losses in a war that is, according to a hard-nosed realpolitik calculus, of little consequence strategically in the context of Russia modernising and being in cahoots with China.

Regardless of how it unfolded, many pundits saw little long-term prospect of the Taliban being pushed back forever in Afghanistan — particularly given the deep, behind-thescenes support it got from Pakistan and, increasingly, elsewhere. The US and its allies had to exit sooner or later.

The bottom line is that the wound had to be cauterised. The question is: was there a better way to cauterise the wound?

The scenes unfolding at Kabul airport suggest that perhaps what was done to help those who helped us was a case of too little, too late.

Vaccines: all you need to know I

t’s looking a lot like Christmas – this is the time touted as the date by which 80 per cent of Australians will be fully vaccinated against COVID. According to the federal government’s August Vaccine Sentiment Summary report, our intention to get vaccinated significantly increased this month with 79 per cent likely to get (or already have had) a shot.

To ensure this happens, in the past month the first drive-through vaccination centre opened in Victoria, Brisbane opened a huge vaccination hub at Southbank’s convention centre and the government has commenced a mass mail-out advising of available dates and places for vaccinations. At this pace of 1,425,984 doses a week, we can expect to reach the 40 million doses needed to fully vaccinate Australia’s adult population in mid-December.

This is a couple of months short of the first vaccination schedule, announced in late February this year that promised a nationwide completion date of around October.

However, last month Prime Minister Scott Morrison acknowledged that goal would not be met and apologised to the nation for the delay

in the vaccination rollout. Since then, the program appears to be full steam ahead and if current daily vaccinations are maintained, Australia will reach its projected target.

“If you get vaccinated, you get to change how we live as a country,” the Prime Minister says.

However, the vaccination charge is not perfect – Australia’s Grattan Institute reports that “vaccinated people can still catch COVID, but those that do pass it on to about half as many others compared to the unvaccinated”.

The report also say that “two doses of Pfizer offer about 88 per cent protection against infection, while two doses of AstraZeneca offer about 67 per cent protection”.

Yet the figures from around the world are clear – if you do catch COVID, you have a 95 per cent less chance of ending up in hospital if you are vaccinated.

It’s been a fast and furious ride with the coronavirus and the creation of a vaccination has arrived at a similar pace.

Considering past vaccinations could take decades to invent, manufacture and distribute, the creation of COVID vaccines has been phenomenally fast.

by Christmas. So what does this mean, what are the vaccines on offer and what does the future hold? WORDS: Gail Forrer.

The mass vaccination hub at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre last week number of factors including global governments throwing in huge amounts of research dollars and the fact that works had already been completed on the SARS and MERS vaccines – these were coronaviruses that previously made the jump from animals to people. This meant experts weren’t starting from scratch when developing a COVID vaccine.

According to the Federal government website, more than $5 billion has been committed to five vaccine agreements.

THE VACCINES AstraZeneca

Pfizer

The vaccine was developed by the SwedishBritish drugmaker AstraZeneca with the University of Oxford. The AstraZeneca option is a viral vector vaccine, which uses a harmless chimpanzee adenovirus to deliver DNA into our cells. For the vaccine to work best, you need to get two doses.

The first 300,000 doses of the vaccine arrived in Australia on February 28, 2021.

Fifty million doses will be manufactured in Australia by bio-pharmaceutical company CSL, in partnership with the developer, AstraZeneca. Distribution of these Australian-made CSL doses has commenced and will continue on an ongoing basis.

Doses for Australia • Australia has secured 53.8 million doses of this vaccine.

This vaccine was produced by German biotech firm BioNTech and US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The drug is being produced at BioNTech and Pfizer facilities in Germany and Belgium and in other countries. The vaccine was approved for use in Australia on January 15, 2021.

• 3.8 million doses have been contracted to be supplied from offshore.

• 50 million doses will be manufactured in Australia. CSL will manufacture these doses for AstraZeneca.

Its efficacy ranges between 62 and 90 per cent, depending on dosage amount and time between doses. New research shows a 12-week break between doses gives the vaccine an efficacy of around 82 per cent.

• TGA boss John Skerritt says the vaccine is 93 per cent effective against COVID-19, 98 per cent against severe disease and 100 per cent against death.

Novavax On January 2021, the TGA granted a provisional determination to Biocelect (on behalf of Novavax). The granting of a provisional determination means the TGA has decided that Biocelect is now eligible to apply for provisional registration. Doses for Australia may be manufactured in several locations across Europe. If the Novavax vaccine is successful it is expected 51 million doses will be available in Australia.

VACCINE PASSPORTS A vaccine passport is essentially a government-issued document that proves an individual has either had a recent negative COVID-19 test or is vaccinated. While the idea of a vaccination passport is still under review in Australia, the Prime Minister says those who pose less of a risk to others should be allowed to undertake riskier behaviour. In a sense the process has already begun in Australia with the recording of your COVID-19 vaccinations logged in your MyGov account. A digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate is also already available for vaccinated Australians and can be accessed through the Express Plus Medicare app, but gives no additional freedoms to vaccinated Australians. The European Union this month implemented a vaccine passport system that allows anyone who is fully vaccinated with any of five Western-made vaccines to travel freely in the EU. France has a ‘vaccine passport’ that people must produce to access a whole range of places such as sports venues, cinemas, museums and festivals. Greece has made a vaccination certificate mandatory for anyone to be allowed into indoor restaurants and bars. Malta is the first country in the EU to ban any visitor over the age of 12 from entering unless fully vaccinated. In Australia, Qantas says it will require all international flight passengers to be vaccinated once quarantine-free international travel resumes.

Ms Wilde will talk about her debut fiction release Henry Hamlet’s Heart, a LGBTQI romance set in Brisbane. SUPPORT FLOWS FOR ALEXA LEARY A young Sunshine Coast triathlete has attracted a world of support as she fights to regain memories and movement after a near-fatal cycling accident. Noosa’s Alexa Leary, 19, was not expected to survive the July 17 incident at Pomona, which left her with a traumatic brain injury, blood clots and multiple fractures. However, showing the determination that saw her win national titles in triathlon in 2019 and 2020 and represent Australia at the world titles in Switzerland in 2019, finishing second in the U19 category, “Lex’’, as she is affectionately known, is fighting back. A #moveforlex campaign started by her family, including dad Russell and mum Belinda, has already attracted more than 20,000 followers, inspiring others to “get out, get moving and do it for those who can’t”. New water supply and sewerage projects are set to help meet the demands of the Sunshine Coast’s growing population in the Aura and Harmony communities. Unitywater executive manager of sustainable infrastructure solutions Amanda Creevey says the projects will help cater for the expected population of 470,000 by 2036. “We are working closely with the Sunshine Coast Council and developers to effectively plan for the region’s future needs,” she says. “Unitywater will continue to upgrade and invest in water supply and sewerage infrastructure in a sustainable way to meet the demands of our growing region and maintain our low cost commitment to all customers.”

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) has welcomed a joint announcement of an increased Queensland COVID-19 Business Support Grant program of $600 million for the tourism and hospitality sector. The federal and state government will fund the program under a 50:50 cost-sharing agreement. QTIC engaged with the Prime Minister and the Federal Minister for Tourism Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan, and State Treasurer Cameron Dick, in a push for urgent action for tourism and hospitality businesses. The grant will be available to operators in Queensland who have experienced a decline in turnover of more than 30 per cent.

TOP MARKS FOR USC The University of the Sunshine Coast has been awarded five stars in the ‘student support’ category of the annual Good Universities Guide, released in early August by Good Education Media.

This rating is based on the extent to which students felt supported as they enrolled, started studying and accessed the services of administrative staff, career advisers, academic advisers, counsellors, financial advisers and health services. USC also gained five stars in other key areas of undergraduate student satisfaction – teaching quality (for the 16th consecutive year), overall experience (10th consecutive year), learning resources (sixth consecutive year), skills development, social equity and learner engagement for its postgraduate programs.

$5 MILLION TO KEEP KOALAS SAFE Millions of dollars will be spent on bolstering the line of defence that protects koalas from a terrible fate on our roads. The state government has promised $5 million to maintain critical koala fencing across the Department of Transport and Main Roads North Coast Region. Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton says safeguarding koala populations and their habitat is important, particularly during the current breeding season. “This $5 million will support more regular inspections and maintenance of existing koala exclusion fencing in TMR’s North Coast Region. A train carriage that once transported a future king and his princess around the Big Pineapple is back on display at the attraction. WORDS: Peter Hall.

T

he Big Pineapple was the biggest of Australia’s big things in 1983, but when Princess Diana arrived it paled into insignificance.

All eyes were on the people’s princess as she and Prince Charles toured the Sunshine Coast and Queensland icon.

It was a magic moment for Woombye and one that will now be immortalised thanks to a touching tribute which was unveiled last week as part of the heritage-listed attraction’s 50th birthday celebrations.

The train carriage that carried the royal couple has been painstakingly restored and will become a permanent feature at the onsite Diablo Oasis bar.

People will be able to sit where Diana sat during her famous tour and have photos taken in a carriage fit for a princess.

Diablo Oasis owner Dimitris Limnatitis says the carriage had been in storage for the past 20 years and was found recently with its original plaque to commemorate the royal visit.

“When we discovered it, we thought we’d give it a little bit of TLC and turn it into something people could come along and have their photo taken in when they visit the Oasis bar.

“This year marks the 50th birthday of the Big Pineapple, so it’s fitting that an iconic Sunshine Coast tourist attraction showcases the legacy of the royal visit to our region on April 12, 1983.

“For many people, Princess Diana was an icon of her generation and she’s just as popular today, so we feel that it is fitting that we restore this carriage to commemorate what would have been her 60th birthday this year.”

The train that carried the royal couple hit the news in May, when it was derailed, allegedly by a tipsy brewery tour patron.

The train and four carriages came off the track, cracking the windscreen and causing a hefty damage bill. Police suspected alcohol was a factor.

Mr Limnatitis opened the tropicalinspired Diablo Oasis bar at the Big Pineapple in mid-2020 and earlier this year the venue introduced a Bali hut bar featuring an ever-changing cocktail menu and visits from the wide variety of animals at the nearby Wildlife HQ. “People just love the venue because it’s outdoors and there’s plenty of shade under the trees and we have a nice afternoon breeze as well as a cool and refreshing Diablo Ginger Beer and fantastic street food to help keep everyone comfortable,” he says.

celebration, the first Pineapple Country music event was last Sunday, featuring internationally renowned singer/ songwriter Alex Lloyd, Brad Butcher and Kelly Cork.

The 16-metre-high fibreglass Big Pineapple is one of the nation’s most recognisable attractions.

Pineapples have long been a significant crop in the area, with production increasing following the opening of the Golden Circle cannery at Northgate in 1947.

The Big Pineapple opened in 1971, as part of the Sunshine Plantation – an early example of agricultural tourism.

Bill and Lyn Taylor bought a pineapple farm and established it as a tourist attraction, showcasing fruit, nuts and sugarcane.

They established a small train so visitors could ride through the farm’s crops, see demonstrations of cultivating and harvesting and consume food made from homegrown produce in its restaurant.

In 1978, the plantation added the ‘Nutmobile’ tour and the attraction was at the peak of its popularity in the 1980s, when it attracted up to 800,000 visitors a year.

The Big Pineapple site is currently undergoing renewal and transformation that stays true to its roots. Today, it is home to the Wildlife HQ zoo and a TreeTop Challenge with high ropes and zipline course.

It also hosts an exciting array of music and food and beverage events, including a craft beer and cider expo.

Ms Robshaw is the deputy editor of My Weekly Preview and a regular contributor to salt magazine and sunshinecoastnews.com.au. In 2019, she published her first book, You Had Me at Hola: In search of love and truth in South America. A colourful memoir about her intrepid years living in Latin America during the 1990s, it won the 2020 High Country Indie Book Award and has received widespread acclaim.

In 2020, Ms Robshaw was in the process of recording an audiobook with her husband Herrin Larkan, a sound engineer, when he tragically passed away.

“Herrin kept pushing me to record the audiobook,” Ms Robshaw says. “I was very hesitant and thought I had plenty of time. The truth was, I felt uncomfortable recording myself reading my own book, so I kept dragging my feet.

It’s one thing to write a book; it’s an entirely different thing to have your voice recorded reading your own work.

It’s quite intimidating, particularly for a writer who prefers to be hiding behind the keyboard, well out of the spotlight.”

With an estimated 3.5 billion users worldwide, audiobooks are the fastest growing sector of the publishing industry.

Most people listen to audiobooks on their smartphones or on smart speakers at home while engaged in other tasks.

“I lost count of the number of times Herrin told me how audiobooks were becoming a huge part of publishing and I had to get on board,” Ms Robshaw says.

“He kept encouraging me to get over myself and just record it. We had only recorded one chapter when he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and died very suddenly in May last year. You think you have all the time in the world, but the truth is, it could be all over at any time, for any one of us.

“Herrin was only 47 and was fit and healthy. There was absolutely no warning.

I have two sons and it was a massive shock for all of us. I’ve been in survival mode since then, just trying to get through each day and raise our boys as best I can.

Needless to say, I completely abandoned the idea of the audiobook. I didn’t have the money to pay another audio engineer and I just didn’t have it in me.”

Ms Robshaw says she knew nothing about the process of applying for a RADF grant and had never considered the idea, until a couple of months ago.

“Completely out of the blue, a little voice just popped into my head and said ‘apply for a RADF grant’. I wasn’t even

thinking about the audiobook and had completely given up on the idea. I really believe when you get a strong message like that – that seemingly comes out of nowhere – you should heed the call.

Those little voices that you can’t ignore are your intuition guiding you. So I called Sunshine Coast Council and spoke to RADF liaison officer Saffron Drew, who was very encouraging and gave me

brilliant advice on my application.”

As part of her application, Ms Robshaw chose Sunshine Coast colleagues to help bring her project to life. With audiobook recording a burgeoning industry, she says there are opportunities for local audio engineers and audiobook narrators who want to

ride the wave of popularity. Ms Robshaw chose Maleny audio engineer Howard Tampling to record the audiobook and Maleny performer Natalie Richy for the role of narrator.

“I realised having a narrator would be a better option for me than recording the book myself,” Ms Robshaw says.

“That way, I don’t have to overcome my resistance to recording myself and I can open up the door to becoming an audiobook narrator for Natalie, as well as bring Howie – who is a very experienced audio engineer – into the exciting world of audiobooks, too.

“I am so grateful to Sunshine Coast Council and Arts Queensland for this opportunity,” Ms Robshaw adds.

“Without this grant, my audiobook would never happen. It will introduce my book to a whole new world of listeners and hopefully lead to increased sales of the paperback and ebook, too.

“My kids and I have done it pretty tough over the past year or so and this really means the world to me. It’s such a big vote of confidence in me and my work and I appreciate it more than words can say.”

Ms Robshaw is one of seven Sunshine Coast residents who received RADF grants as part of the July 2021 round. The others

are Courtney Scheu (in the dance category), Kenny Waterson and Patricia McInerney (in the interdisciplinary category), and Laura Vecmane Bartlett, Claire Letitia Reynolds and Elizabeth Derham (in the visual arts category).

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland government and Sunshine Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. RADF funds are aimed at the development of emerging and established artists, creative practitioners and producers.

RADF funding is awarded to projects that align with the Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 2018 – 2038, which provides a 20-year vision for the region, placing artists at its core.

SURVEY SHOWS AUSSIES VALUE SCIENCE Most Australians trust science and scientists to get the country through COVID-19, and the next crisis, according to a survey released for National Science Week. WORDS: AAP.

ine out of 10 Australians trust science and scientists to guide us through the pandemic, climate change and the next crisis.

Most say science is very important for government decisions and want more spending on science, according to a landmark survey released last week, ahead of National Science Week which is celebrated from August 14 to 22.

Some 85 per cent believe the

economy will improve if more people pursue science, technology, engineering and maths-related careers.

Leading science communicator Misha Schubert says Australians are increasingly seeing how science is keeping them safe and strengthening the country.

“The success of Australia’s general navigation of COVID offers us some lessons about how we can continue to apply those lessons to other areas of

policy, including on the changing climate.”

Two in three parents say their children are more interested in sciencebased careers, as medical teams and vaccine scientists inspire a new generation during the pandemic.

Despite the findings, there is still resistance to social controls to meet the threat of the pandemic.

The policy response to climate change also remains politically difficult for Australian governments.

Some 84 per cent say there are negative consequences for society if people do not value science.

Ms Schubert, head of peak body Science and Technology Australia, says using the country’s entire talent pool is also important to Australians because diversity will produce the best possible research and science.

More than two-thirds say minority groups often do not have equal access to education in science, technology, engineering and maths, and that view rises to 75 per cent among Generation Z and millennials.

Even though boys and girls have similar levels of skill at core science and maths subjects, girls tend to have much lower confidence levels, Ms Schubert says.

She urged parents to affirm their daughters’ strong skills, and to encourage them to stick with STEM subjects.

The 3M State of Science Index found trust in science globally is at the highest level ever recorded as people back science and scientists to lead a recovery.

“People once considered to be hidden away in labs have become the heroes of our society,” 3M’s Chris LeBlanc says.

BUSINESS AWARDS A GREAT BOOST Past Sunshine Coast Business Awards (SCBA) winners and finalists have more in common than just the awards, with many saying the process of entering the awards improved their businesses.

And with the impacts of COVID-19 lingering, SCBA chair Jennifer Swaine says she wants this year’s awards to be a real acknowledgment and celebration of the Coast’s resilience.

BIG FUTURE FOR THE LIGHTNING Our national netball superstars may have missed out on a grand final win this year, but Sunshine Coast Lightning are a local success story that’s only just beginning. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

W

inning back-to-back premierships, making three grand finals and five consecutive finals series.

You could say the Sunshine Coast’s national netball team is scoring goals as it pauses to recognise its short but remarkable history.

Sunshine Coast Lightning is marking five years since it launched, and in that time, the club has gone from strength to strength at a community grassroots and national level.

The team may not have made it through to this year’s grand final after a semi-final loss against West Coast Fever on Saturday, but there is still plenty to celebrate.

In its five years, Lightning won back-to-back premierships in its first two

– a feat no other start-up sporting club has achieved – and in 2019 went on to secure the minor premiership, playing in a third consecutive grand final.

When the pandemic began in 2020, Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) teams competed within a centralised Queensland hub format. Lightning finished second, qualifying for a fourth consecutive finals, before bowing out at the preliminary finals.

As one of five foundation players, Maddy McAuliffe tells My Weekly Preview she remembers when no one knew what Sunshine Coast Lightning was.

“When we started no one knew anything about us,” the wing defence player says.

“I remember very clearly applying for

rental applications with three of the other teammates and we were putting the CEO’s number as our contact for work because we didn’t have an office.

“People thought we were a lighting company – nobody had any idea what it was. Flash forward five years and it would be tough to find someone on the Coast who hasn’t heard of Lightning or the netball team. It’s been an absolute crazy journey, but I’ve loved every second of it.”

Lightning CEO Danielle Smith says when reflecting on the past five years, she feels pride in the club and says its success is a combination of the support from the Lightning family, members, fans, partners and the wider Sunshine Coast community.

“There is a real sense of pride in the club and what we’ve achieved as a united

group of people in and around the club,” Ms Smith says.

“Everyone’s played a role in building the club and contributing to its success. We’ve all worked incredibly hard; the success doesn’t come easy that’s for sure.”

As part of the SSN league, Sunshine Coast Lightning was established in August 2016 and is the region’s first and only national, professional sporting team.

A joint venture between NRL club Melbourne Storm and the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), both organisations – together with Sunshine Coast Council – have been critical in bringing Sunshine Coast Lightning to life.

Ms Smith says in the early days, the club worked hard to establish community connections.

“The first year establishing the club was the hardest working year of my life but also the most rewarding,” Ms Smith says.

“We really engaged with the community early on. We met with netball associations in the region, council, local media partners.

“Getting out into the community and being part of big community events, we started getting known in the community before we started playing.”

NEWS She says the success of the Lightning and interest in netball is trickling down to local community clubs and at USC with the implementation of a netball academy.

“There’s definitely increased registration in local netball and that’s directly attributable to Lightning as they’ve seen success in their own backyard, and it’s given them something to aspire to.

“We’ve also been working closely with USC and developing an academy for teenagers and aspiring netballers.

“They get to be part of the Lightning environment and also study at USC so it’s a great outcome for netball and study.”

The academy feeds into the USC state netball team, USC Thunder, which acts as a pathway onto the Lightning.

Ms McAuliffe says the program is already producing young, local athletes who no longer need to move to a city to play professionally.

“I think it’s been crucial. There’s always been a need to shift to a city if you wanted to pursue a netball career.

“We are seeing athletes comes through like Ashlee Unie who went to school at Mathew Flinders, played into our USC Thunder team and was selected in the team this year.”

“COVID’s been a really big challenge, she says. “There have definitely been some adjustments, but I think we are all just so grateful we are still able to play.

“The fact we have got to the end of this season is just incredible because there was definitely a stage this year when I didn’t think it was going to happen.”

Ms Smith says some of her favourite moments have come just as much off court as they have on court and have mostly been driven by the supporters and fans.

“The success of the team and the first two premierships are unbelievable memories, but some of the things that also

stand out are the little moments.

“One of the biggest ones was the semi-final we played at Brisbane Entertainment Centre against the Queensland Firebirds.

“We were very outnumbered by supporters and the Lightning supporters were very loud. By the end of the game, they were drowning out the sound of the Firebirds chants and they were probably outnumbered 10 to one.”

Ms Smith recalls after a 2019 match against NSW Swifts, the team commented on social media about the support of the Lightning crowd.

“The noise and sound coming out of that match was unbelievable and for the

opposition to say you’ve got the loudest and most passionate crowd in the whole competition was incredible.

“The players take such a lift from having the community behind them.”

Looking ahead to the next five years, Ms Smith hopes for the club’s hard work and success to continue.

She is also hoping a successful bid to include netball as an Olympic sport in the 2032 Brisbane games will help create better infrastructure for the sport locally.

“I would love to see Lightning grow and prosper to be an even greater integral part of the Sunshine Coast community and wider Queensland.”

The new Albany Lakes Park playground has been a long time coming and allows for a much larger play space and improved accessibility.

The Queensland Government contributed

$150,000 as part of the Unite and Recover South East Queensland Community Stimulus program in addition to Council’s $230,000 contribution. The Queensland Government has committed a further $600,000 under the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Package for Stage Two upgrades.

Large shade sails, a multi-play tower, fencing, additional picnic settings, barbecue, shade trees and drinking fountain, will be constructed in the later part of the 2021/22 financial year.

In the last year, 11 schools and youth groups have made a big difference to our local environment – 455 students and 38 teachers planted 2963 native trees, shrubs and ground covers and hand-weeded 78 wheelie bins of weeds at Council’s environment reserves. Council’s BushCare team says school students have never been more aware of their environment and love opportunities to make a difference. SMALL WONDERS CAPTURE TEENAGE PHOTOGRAPHER Buderim’s Isabella Balisky is being recognised for her images of some of the Sunshine Coast’s smallest creatures. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

Sunshine Coast teenager with an eye for detail is gaining recognition for her work as she captures the often-unseen world of bugs and insects with her photography.

Isabella Balisky has always had a love for miniature wildlife and when she discovered photography two years ago, she quickly caught what she calls the “photography bug”.

“I always loved bugs, and that translated into loving the minuscule world,” she says. “Growing up, Mum used to be into photography and did a lot of photojournalism and there was (Australia Zoo’s Crikey magazine) photography competition in 2019 and I thought, let’s give it a go.

“I picked up a camera and we drove up to Mapleton to see the beautiful yellow

flowers and all the bees. That photo ended up being a finalist, so I was exhibited in the Queensland Museum with two of my images.

“That was insane experience and ever since then I’ve caught the photography bug.”

Isabella specialises in macro wildlife photography, giving a new meaning to a world often unseen in everyday life, and the creatures within.

She lives on a property in Buderim and captures much of her work in her own backyard.

“I love showing the universe people don’t usually focus their eyes on.

“I can step out in my backyard and see the most incredible jumping spiders, weevils, ladybugs, bees – it’s an incredible abundance of diversity.

“To me it’s incredibly important you’re not stressing out the bugs. So when I am taking the photo I love to encapsulate what their behaviour is and what they’re doing in that moment and not have them disturbed by my presence.”

Isabella has recently been named as a finalist for the Australia Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year for her image Eye to Eye. “It was a very early morning and I walked outside and we have beautiful morning glories sprinkled on a wire fence.

“It was right before the flower began to close, I spotted this red bug and I thought that’s beautiful, so I shot the image.

“It was such a beautiful moment to be able to capture the little bug in the early morning.”

Since 2004, the South Australian Museum in partnership with Australian Geographic has welcomed photographers of all ages, skill levels and nationalities to submit images of fauna, flora or

landscapes in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and the New Guinea regions.

In this year’s competition there were 2206 entries from 17 countries narrowed down to 108 finalists.

Winners will be announced on August 26 with all the finalists’ images to be showcased at the South Australian Museum and in the Australian Geographic magazine.

“It’s incredible to be amidst some of Australia’s top photographers,” Isabella tells My Weekly Preview.

In June, Isabella was also named one of five Ted’s Young Guns after an Australia-wide talent search. Backed by tech store Ted’s Cameras, the five young photographers who remain in the program until they reach the age of 24 receive mentoring and become ambassadors to help inspire other young photographers.

Currently home-schooled and looking to the future, Isabella hopes to combine her love of photography and science through further studies.

“I really hope to study entomology in the future and bring the arts and science together and break down the barriers of communication to show people there is so much more in our garden.”

However, some locals, resident associations and community groups are concerned about the upgrade.

Caloundra resident Prue Oswin, who has a background in engineering, worries for the safety of students who use the area daily. She is also concerned the impact building of the new corridor will have on the environment and says the road will encourage more people to drive into the CBD rather than use alternate modes of transport.

“My greatest concern is the scale of the project and process used to decide it needed to be a four-lane road,” she says.

“This project will result in removal of a section of forest, result in roads being constructed across waterways and kids going to Caloundra high school having to cross a four-lane road.

“I’ve been spending some time down at the site and from what I can see there are more people walking and cycling northsouth in the area and this road is going to be east-west.”

new “congestion busting” transport corridor aimed at reducing the journey time for more than 10,000 daily road users in Caloundra is being met with mixed feedback from the community.

The Omrah Avenue to Nicklin Way upgrade project will provide a four-lane connection from the Caloundra CBD to Nicklin Way. After eight years of planning,

the 1.6-kilometre upgrade will comprise two sections.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the project will include a two-way cycle track, pedestrian pathways and a four-lane road.

“This integrated transport upgrade project is part of a long-term plan to provide better and safer access to and from Caloundra for public transport

need for another entry into Caloundra, Ms Oswin believes a two-lane road will provide a more balanced approach for motorists and pedestrians.

“The project is being advertised for active transport, and it does provide really good-quality facilities along the corridor but not necessarily where we need them. A two-lane road would have a fraction of the impacts that a four-lane road would have but would have all the benefits and more.”

Section one involves widening Oval Avenue and Third Avenue from two to four traffic lanes and connecting Oval Avenue with Omrah Avenue, with Sunshine Coast Council to foot the estimated $19.6 million bill. Section two will connect section one to Nicklin Way, creating a new signalised intersection at Nicklin Way and providing an alternative access to the Caloundra central business district. This section will be jointly funded with the Australian government committing $7 million, $7 million from the state government and $4.2 million from the council.

The council is hosting a series of drop-in sessions so the community can view the project’s concept design and speak directly with the project team.

They are on August 19 from 5pm to 7pm at Caloundra Shopping Centre, and Monday, August 23 from 3pm to 5pm at Caloundra Library.

Cr Ted Hungerford Division Seven A big boost for Buderim Village Park A new playground at Buderim Village Park will progress thanks to the state government’s $100 million South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program. A $700,000 allocation has been set aside for the new playground in Buderim Village Park, which is located on the corner of Church and King streets.

Work is scheduled to commence in 2022.

Wishes granted Council’s most recent round of Minor Grants delivered more than $128,000 among 77 not-for-profit organisations from across the region. The Minor Grants program supports not-for-profit

organisations to deliver one-off projects, events and activities with broad community benefits. Congratulations to the Buderim Men’s Shed ($1000), the Buderim Garden Club ($1810), the Sunshine Coast Paddlesports Club ($540) and the Eric Joseph Foote War Memorial Sanctuary Association ($1500) who all received grants. New mobile phone rules The rules have now changed to make it illegal for a driver to hold a mobile phone in their hand or have it resting on any part of their body, including their lap. The phone doesn’t need to be turned on or in use.

The changes will also make exemptions to the rules clear. All drivers can hold their phone or a wallet with a phone in it when the car is stationary to: • produce a licence or other document as required by a police officer (a digital licence or a border pass), • pay for goods and services (at a drivethrough), • enter a road-related area like a car park.

Open and P2 licence holders can continue to use a phone hands free, for instance in a cradle attached to the vehicle.

They can also use a phone hands free when it’s in a pocket of their clothing or in a pouch they are wearing, provided they can’t see the screen and operate the phone only by using their voice.

The infringement for driver use hand-held mobile phone is $1033 and four demit points.

More donations needed for trek Local trekkers have successfully completed the Virtual Everest Trek for Parkinson’s disease, climbing the equivalent of 8848 metres in five days. They climbed Mount Coolum and Mount Ngungun 42 times to raise money for the Shake it Up Foundation and despite the pain, trek leader Gary McKitterick-Gillett says every step was worth it. “What was interesting was the number of times people mentioned their connection with Parkinson’s disease – a grandparent, father, uncle, mother, every day we had the same conversations,” he says. Club celebrates three decades Kawana Senior Citizen’s club is celebrating 30 years on August 22. WHY WE NEED TO TAKE BETTER CARE OF OUR BRAINS We talk a lot about heads these days.

The COVID-19 lockdown is affecting the nation’s collective mental health and as the sun starts to set on the football seasons, the toll of head knocks suffered by the fast and ferocious is staggering. As of round 12 this year, 59 players had suffered a concussion in the NRL – a concussion every 1.5 games.

Ten rounds on and the number of concussed players is in triple figures.

Heads: so complex, so important, so undervalued. And so easily hurt from within and without.

The scale of mental illness is one of the biggest concerns of our time, with understanding of disorders and ailments struggling to keep pace with the escalating number of people diagnosed with them.

Paediatric hospitals in Canada last week reported a 100 per cent increase in admissions for mental illness and upwards of a 200 per cent increase in admissions for suicide attempts and illicit substance misuse since the start of the pandemic.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics last month showed the wobbly,

isolated world created by COVID-19 had caused a spike in severe mental distress, particularly among those alone, young or with a disability.

Physical brain injury also continues to plague us. The spotlight was cast on head injuries in sport decades ago, as evidence grew that thousands of footy players, boxers and other participants were developing dementia or memory loss linked to recurrent roughhousing many years earlier.

While I am no elite athlete, I have had multiple concussions. There is evidence that females fare worse after a concussion, possibly because of differences in the management of injuries, the microstructure of the brain and the effect of female hormones.

Female college athletes in the US were recently found to suffer concussions at almost double the rate of males.

I have recently learnt what labyrinth the brain can be. This month, I was laid flat with a virus that attacked the blood flow to my head for a few days and were it not for the quick actions of my excellent GP, I could have been rendered blind or worse.

I was one of the lucky ones and now I feel the vigour that comes with being lifted by life’s second wind.

Heads carry our most important organ, the one thing that enables us to move and function. They contain our thoughts, our knowledge and the very essence of ourselves.

We need to take better care of our brains, protecting where possible against damage and nursing them when a bruising occurs.

And to those with sicknesses of the mind, we need to be kind. It does not take much thinking to realise that.

The idea of $300 incentives to get the jab is complete madness.

Has anyone any idea of the frightening debt that Australia is carrying?

Australians have a responsibility to get vaccinated for the sake of our country.

Without that jab, we have no hope of leading a normal life with the freedoms that we used to take for granted.

The former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd said of climate change: “It is one of the greatest scientific, economic, and moral challenges of our time.”

The recently released IPCC climate report is a grave warning that we are fast running out of time to halt the worst effects of global warming caused by our use of fossil fuels, particularly coal.

The Coalition is still fighting amongst themselves and failing to implement energy policies to reduce Australia’s carbon footprint. As Mr Rudd said of climate change, we cannot wait, we cannot get it wrong, our generation has one shot to get it right, otherwise future generations will live with the consequences.

The time for real action on climate change is now.

HALF A CENTURY

Ashley Robinson reckons common sense is not common at all and puts himself forward as a prime example.

Sami Muirhead is feeling old with the knowledge the Big Pineapple has turned 50, along with some of her favourite celebrities.

ommon sense isn’t so common anymore. Take last week in my little world, for instance. A fair example of having not much sense was highlighted when old mate asked me to go get the shopping from the supermarket. Now this is a bit of a mission. I get a fairly detailed shopping list and where to find the listed goods, plus photos sent to my phone of anything that old mate thinks might challenge me – so plenty of photos. I also get a tutorial of the list before I leave with many “do you understand” questions and pulled faces when I don’t.

Hearing is another problem, as during the tutorial she started adding something to the list. I thought she said, “how do you spell cable ties” when in fact, she was asking me how to spell Thai salad. That caused a ruckus but eventually, off I went.

I returned quite confident I had nailed it, producing all my gatherings until lastly, the spicy raisin bread. It was the right one but apparently I was supposed to ask to get it cut thick. Bugger me. I thought it was already cut (note to self: take glasses next time).

We had an argument about how much common sense I didn’t have. Wow, that was a scary 15 minutes of my life with her staring at me, but I managed to complete the mission unscathed.

Restoring some dignity as I walked out of the kitchen, she quietly asked me if I got any of the apples that I like, as there was only one left. I replied that it wasn’t on the list. “But they are your apples you idiot, you knew there was only one left.

You have no common sense.”

I have to agree, but thankfully I found a worse example. I walk through an environmental park to the beach and about a month ago, some idiot had a party in there and left a lounge on the track. It stayed a couple of weeks and then it had a tape put around it with ‘illegal dumping under investigation’ written on it and it stayed for another two weeks. Are you serious? Why didn’t they just take it away? Are the possums or the wallabies going to give evidence about who and how it was dumped?

Thankfully, at the time of writing it has been taken away. Common sense is not common. I should know.

special leading lady turned 50 this week. She is tart and prickly, and yet adored across the region: the Big Pineapple. I have the best memories of going there as a seven-yearold kid and having a banana split with chocolate sauce, ice-cream and chopped nuts on the exotic creation.

A few years later, my mum took me again and I had a passion fruit parfait that began my lifelong love affair with passion fruit. The iconic Big Pineapple had such pulling power at one stage, even Princess Diana went there in 1983 and rode the nut carriage with that nutty husband sitting next to her. Sorry, I couldn’t help that one!

What I adore about those photos of the historic moment is that Diana is wearing yellow as a tribute to the pineapple fields in Nambour. The People’s Princess loved to dress in a theme. How wonderful the carriage they rode in has been rediscovered and is now on display for us all to see.

At its peak in the ’80s, up to 800,000 people would visit the Big Pineapple every year. I am feeling old with the news our local icon is five decades old. Mark Wahlberg, Lance Armstrong, Sacha Baron

Cohen, Snoop Dog, Winona Ryder, Christina Applegate, Ricky Martin and Denise Richards are also turning 50 this year. But the celebrity who shocked me the most with her age is Jenna Elfman. Who, you may be asking? Dharma people, from Dharma and Greg. Yes, the free-spirited yoga teacher who fell in love with the conservative solicitor. It was the best TV show of the 1990s in my opinion.

Well, maybe it was a tie between Sex and The City and Ally McBeal and Friends. They were the days, weren’t they? Drinking a cosmopolitan and eating seven-layer dip thinking, this is as fancy as life could ever get! And a real splurge while you watched one episode of your favourite show (and had to wait an entire week for the next installment) was Toobs and Pollywaffles.

Good times, indeed!

Brian and Anne Keys lived at Halcyon Landing for nearly eight years in a house next door to Tricia Taylor. Earlier this year, Tricia sold her house and announced that she was moving to B by Halcyon.

The Keys had been looking at B by Halcyon for some time and decided that the prospect of a new house was very appealing.

“We have built a lot of new houses during our married life,” Mrs Keys says. “It wasn’t by plan or by design that we ended up buying the block right next door to Tricia. We looked at all the land options at B

by Halcyon and it just so happened that the block of land next to Tricia suited us best.”

The Keys, originally New Zealanders who have been in Australia for more than half their lives, are currently living in rented accommodation outside of Halcyon Landing while their new home is being built. They hope to move into B by Halcyon in October.

Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs is looking for new puppy carers in North Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast.

These pups can one day go on to change the life of someone who is blind or has low vision, but they’ll need some help to reach that point.

Could you be a puppy carer? A puppy carer provides a safe, loving home for the pup to grow during the next 12 to 15 months of its life before it comes back to Seeing Eye Dogs to enter formal training.

In that time, you’ll need to help socialise the puppy in everyday situations. Things like going for a coffee, meeting with friends or walking to the shops all help acclimatise the pup to the real world that it will someday navigate with one of our clients.

Finally, you’ll start the pup on its training journey by teaching it some basic skills including sitting, toileting and how to walk nicely while on a lead.

The local puppy development trainer Tracey will be in regular contact with you to answer any questions and to guide you.

The cost of all equipment, food, vet care and training is covered by Seeing Eye Dogs, so you won’t ever be out of pocket if you embark on this journey.

Recovery after an anterior total hip replacement

Treating varicose & surface veins with sclerotherapy

Things you can do at home to relieve back pain

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they can comfortably ambulate after an anterior total hip replacement.

We typically mobilise patients within hours of their surgery. Most of our patients usually rapidly progress to being independent on crutches and require them for only one to two weeks.

There are many factors that dictate how long a patient needs to stay in hospital but generally getting back to your home environment as soon as it is safe to do so is an important component of your physical as well as your psychological recovery.

Excessive physical activity in the first two months after a hip replacement is counterproductive. We generally recommend gentle walking and stretching.

Many patients are safe to drive after just three to four weeks and can perform most of their everyday activities within six weeks.

For patients who enjoy more extreme activities such as surfing, they should wait at least three months to return.

All patients are different, and you should discuss your specific situation with your orthopaedic surgeon.

Varicose veins and surface veins are very common. They can be unsightly and may ache. Sometimes they can cause bleeding, blood clots or skin ulcers.

Smaller varicose veins and most surface veins can be treated with a process called sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting the veins with a sclerosing solution. At Sunshine Vascular, we use a very fine needle and strong salt solution, which is a natural therapy that you cannot be allergic to. This solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to block up and eventually disappear. Compression stockings are then applied.

Sclerotherapy doesn’t really interfere with your daily routine. You walk immediately after treatment and wear the stockings for only three days. The procedure has been used by many thousands of people Australia-wide as a way to treat unsightly, uncomfortable small varicose veins and spider veins.

Back pain can be debilitating and make even simple tasks difficult to complete.

You can find some relief at home thanks to some simple strategies such as these: • Place a heating pad or ice pack on the affected area.

• Take over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen and paracetamol as directed.

• Do some stretches for your back to keep it loose, but, of course, stop and seek treatment if you feel the pain get worse.

• Don’t participate in any activities that cause the pain to worsen, such as lifting heavy objects.

• If you are frequently seated, remember to take regular breaks and avoid remaining in the same position too long.

• Get adequate rest so your body has time to heal.

Acupuncture, massage therapy and physiotherapy can help. Be sure to monitor your pain, because sciatica or electric shocks could indicate nerve compression and an MRI scan may be needed. Your GP can refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and a treatment plan.

Venous thromboembolic disease is a commonly encountered issue, and remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

The last decade has seen significant changes in management with the availability of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) such as rivaroxaban and apixaban dramatically changing standard of care in these conditions. These drugs have been available on the PBS for eight years, however, we continue to learn more about their place in clinical practice.

Recent developments have included changes in the use of these agents in renal failure, with rivaroxaban now approved down to an eGFR of 15 mL/min, recent evidence showing good efficacy and safety in the management of cancer-associated thromboembolic disease, as well as an emerging place in the treatment of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia.

Lower dose formulations have also given more flexibility in long-term secondary thromboprophylaxis. This remains an area of active research as we better understand the place of the DOACs in a wider range of clinical scenarios.

Start with slopping on the sunscreen such as light-coloured paint on the external walls which “can make a massive difference”.

Then slap on a light-coloured roof – it can make six degrees of difference to the internal temperature of a home. Under the roof and inside the walls, add lots of insulation to help control the internal temperature.

“We need to create homes that aren’t ovens, but we don’t want Eskies,” Ms Neil tells My Weekly Preview.

COAST SOCCER CODES UNITE FOR SPECIAL EVENT A pre-lockdown Wednesday night carnival at Maroochydore has helped unite the football community on the Sunshine Coast.

Representative teams from the region’s two biggest football associations – Sunshine Coast Football and Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association – converged for the recent event.

SCF board-member Chris Dunk said it was a breakthrough occasion.

“We’re both playing the same game, but we cater for two lots of kids, and this was a chance to have a really big gettogether,” he said.

“It was a great opportunity for the

kids. It gave them a chance to play against each other and gauge where they are.”

“It was a good opportunity for the Sunshine Coast (Football) community teams to prepare for a state competition at the end of the year, which will also be at Maroochydore,” Mr Dunk said.

“And the Churches (rep) teams train all year for two competitions, so it was a good chance for them to have a go,” he said.

The Fever had too many weapons when it mattered in the sudden-death final and will progress to next weekend’s preliminary final against the Giants.

Jhaniele Fowler’s 54 goals proved decisive, Verity Charles was a standout and goal attack Sasha Glasgow (six goals, 12 feeds) came off the bench to play a stunning second-half cameo for a side that seized all its opportunities.

features 74 famous golf courses,” he says.

“For the golfers, and we have a lot of them, it’s the opportunity to play courses such as St Andrews, Pebble Beach and Gleneagles – albeit virtually.”

Chris says for the non-golfers, the system has also been programmed for other bar games including beer pong, darts and cornhole.

“We’ve built this space as the ultimate games room for grown-ups,” he says.

Hey groovers, well it looks like we might be heading to the zone of no waves for a while. I truly hope I am wrong as I just got a new board. On a more depressing note I got sent a few pictures of a Hawaiian friend living at G-Land for six months. He has been scoring full stand-up barrels 8ft plus, with hardly anyone there. The other motivating thing to mention is he is 71 years young! So remind me, what is your excuse again? There might be a few mal sliders up north, so get what you can.

And, hopefully next year we can get to Indo.

Well finally some great weather and the reef fishing didn’t let us down with some great sweetlip and tusk fish being caught off Coolum and Caloundra on the inner reefs. With the closure finishing on Sunday I’m sure we will hear some good reports of snapper and pearl perch being caught. In the rivers, flathead have still been in good numbers and as August comes to a close and September through November rolls on, the whiting fishing should improve also. As the weather and water temps warm up the fishing in the dams will improve. At the moment they aren’t too bad with some nice bass and the odd saratoga being caught at Borumba. Along Kawana to Wurtulla, at dusk there have been a few nice tailor caught but bream have been the main catch.
