Our cover star this week knows all too well how easily it can get out of hand. The Sunshine Coast paramedic – and daughter of 92.7 Mix FM radio personality Caroline Hutchinson – has been working in the UK since the start of the pandemic and has seen the worst effects of the virus.

Upset by Australia’s anti-lockdown protests, Jemima Hutchinson took to social media recently to plead with her fellow Australians to take health warnings seriously and get vaccinated. Her post struck a big chord. Deputy editor Leigh Robshaw spoke with her about life on

frontline in one of the worst-hit countries and heard some harrowing stories.

A voice for the voiceless Sunshine Coast Citizen Advocacy is an important service that has operated on the Sunshine Coast for 25 years, finding volunteers to be friends to people with disabilities who have no one else.

ilda Grey thought she was doing the right thing when she put her brother Geoffrey into the best nursing home she could find.

Aged 63 and living with Down syndrome, early onset dementia and long-term repercussions from dengue fever, Geoffrey can’t talk, can’t leave his bed and needs 24/7 care.

Gilda believed he’d get the best care in a nursing home – better than she could provide. Sadly, she was mistaken.

She soon realised she had to be at the nursing home every day to ensure Geoffrey had even the most basic of his needs met and was heartbroken at how badly he was neglected in a ‘five-star’ nursing home.

So, in December 2019, she brought him home to live with her. Gilda makes sure all his support needs are met and provides him with a loving environment. But she’s worried about what will become of him if something should happen to her.

Donna Duncan, program co-ordinator for the Sunshine Coast Citizen Advocacy Program, says this is where a citizen

advocate can help. Citizen Advocacy is where a one-to-one relationship is established between a person with a disability and an unpaid advocate.

The Citizen Advocacy Office, which has operated on the Sunshine Coast for 25 years, recruits advocates and supports them in the relationship.

“Geoffrey is the most lovely man,” Ms Duncan says. “He was very vibrant in his earlier years. He loves to dance, loves rock ’n’ roll and was well-known as an Elvis impersonator. He can’t express himself anymore, but he does understand kindness.

He always lived with a loving family but since his parents passed, he has always lived with or close to, his sister.

“Gilda plans to continue looking after Geoffrey and to make sure every day counts, for the time he has left. But our fear is if anything ever happens to her, he’ll end up back in a nursing home.”

Sunshine Coast Citizen Advocacy is looking for an advocate for Geoffrey who can travel to Eudlo, understands end-of-life laws and is a good communicator.

“Geoffrey’s advocate would check in on

him, monitor services and hold the service providers accountable for the quality and availability of the needed services and support,” Ms Duncan says.

Since starting in her role in May 2017, Ms Duncan has experienced some harrowing stories. A man who had been living in a locked room in a nursing home for 25 years. A nine-year-old Noosa girl with autism and every member of her family lives with a disability. A mum who chose to give birth to a boy with an intellectual disability and was rejected by her family.

“They all start as horror stories but they end well,” Ms Duncan says. “Most people we meet are in a really vulnerable position.

We bring someone who is not paid to be in their life who chooses to be in their life.

We’re supporting 51 relationships at the moment and we have two crisis advocates.”

Citizen Advocacy is a worldwide movement, but there are only nine programs operating in Australia. Due to a lack of funding or because programs have failed to make sufficient matches, many have disappeared. The Coast program is one of the most successful in Australia.

“We focus on those members of the community who have an intellectual disability, who are often neglected, vulnerable and alone, and who need someone to speak up for them and represent their interests,” Ms Duncan says.

“Citizen advocates are ordinary people who do not replace paid professionals.

They are involved because they have made a voluntary commitment to be loyal to a person with a disability. To be someone who will, when necessary, protect and safeguard their interests.

“Citizen advocates in this community have been friends for those who have no friends and no family; visited regularly those who have never had a visitor; believed in a person’s capacity to understand when no one else does; noticed things that no one else notices.

“We can’t change the world, but we can change the world for one person.”

Placemaking: the way forward Housing affordability and homelessness are growing problems on the Sunshine Coast, but there are innovative solutions available if our leaders dare to think differently, say urban planning experts.

W

e are not alone. The Sunshine Coast in common with much of the western world, is experiencing a housing shortage and affordability crisis.

Three years ago, a global survey by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy confirmed this when, out of 200 cities polled around the world, 90 per cent were considered unaffordable when applying the widely used standard of average house prices being more than three times median income.

The search for suitable housing styles goes back to the dawn of time, with many answers emanating from cultural customs and values. However, one Sunshine Coast urban planner is calling for disruption in traditional thinking.

Architect Phil Smith is appealing to the council to show leadership and start a new style of development model.

“The Sunshine Coast Council is a significant landowner,” he says.

“Although council is historically not in the business of providing affordable housing, as landowners it’s time they used their resources and partnered up with the not-for-profit sector to develop affordable housing.”

Mr Smith says the role he is advocating for the council is usually undertaken by

state and federal governments. However, if the council did undertake this sort of game-changing initiative, Mr Smith insists it would contribute further to defining the organisation as a visionary leader.

To date, the concept hasn’t had favourable results. In the Noosa Shire, the Tewantin TAFE is a monument to 21st century waste. Purpose built in 2004 as a TAFE college, inclusive of a short-term accommodation space for artist residencies, the edgy, environmental architecture saw it gain several prestigious building awards.

In 2014, it was closed and remains so.

In recent years, the state government negotiated a purchase with Noosa Council, however for various reasons, last year it decided not to proceed with the purchase.

Since then, the state government has called for expressions of interest and the result will be announced in the next month.

In the meantime, Noosa shire is offering another model of accommodation.

This model provides short-term, share accommodation for the numerous hospitality staff employed in prime entertainment areas, yet priced out of the area where employers are seeking their labour. It is hoped this concept will set the standard right across the Sunshine Coast region.

Noosa Council has moved ahead and approved Noosa Bounce, a new 122-bed resort offering up a dedicated section to provide short-term, accommodation from $200 per week in premium shared quarters.

Property owner Mark Baldwin says, “Hospitality workers are an integral part of the hospitality and tourism offering and we need to seize this moment to come together and build on our experience and

resilience to ensure the sustainable and inclusive recovery of our important tourism sector. My team at Bounce are accustomed to supporting guests, and with the current absence of international travellers, we will have enough beds.”

History shows a change in people’s attitude is eventually reflected in government legislation regarding zoning, but in some cases perhaps not soon enough. Russell Green of RG Strategic, an urban planning company with more than 20 years’ local experience, suggests that industrial zonings could include more than the single ‘caretaker’ residence it currently offers.

Mr Smith agrees and gives an example of the Byron Bay Arts and Industry Estate.

“I have been watching it for 10 to 15 years and it’s developed into vibrant creative space,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview.

“The history of the estate goes back to the early 1970s and by 1975, there were businesses operating out of what was then an isolated, industrial area well away from the heart of town.”

The estate has since evolved into an eclectic mix of businesses and residential uses, moulded by its users. While this evolution has brought vitality to the place, it has also resulted in a number of significant functional issues, not the least myweeklypreview.com.au

of which is mobility and access. It should also be noted that Byron council owns two of four major land holdings in the precinct.

As we look forward, the 2032 Olympic Games may offer further housing opportunities and initiatives. For instance, the Victorian Government in collaboration with Australian Housing Solutions (AHS) oversaw a tender to transfer 82 dwellings from the 2006 Commonwealth Games athlete’s village. These dwellings went on to be used for social housing.

Russell Green, RG Strategic Robina on the Gold Coast is presently mooted as a site for an Olympic Village. It would be built on state-owned land and already Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is calling for a building style that is, “desirable to live in post-Olympics”.

Additionally, the Sunshine Coast is poised to institute satellite accommodation for athletes.

Finally, Mr Smith harks back to post-war lifestyles that were built within proximity of services such as the corner shop – more of a village lifestyle.

At that stage, the disruptor came in the form of the family car. The personal transport allowed people to move away from the centre and out into the suburbs with a single family dwelling on big yards.

“The car shaped our design,” he says.

Post-millennium, Mr Smith says he wants to see design once again to be shaped by people.

LOCAL PLANNING A review of the current planning scheme (Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014) in 2020 found that while it is generally operating well as a planning instrument, it could be improved in several important ways. Changes to strengthen alignment with more recent state and local policies are considered particularly important.

Responding to emerging issues such as the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the predicted impacts of climate change and new technologies are also key considerations.

It is anticipated that the new Sunshine Coast planning scheme, which is intended to be completed by 2024, will build on the strengths of the current planning scheme while also providing new and enhanced direction for future development.

In doing so, it will play a crucial role in achieving council’s vision of becoming Australia’s most sustainable region.

GLOBAL SOLUTIONS In the UK, Bristol has re-aligned tenure systems into multiple tenures for housing, and in Bristol you will find construction of 161 homes on a former primary school site with six different types of tenure. A housing association, community investment company and private investor have worked together to create this model, in which some houses will be sold at market price and others made available through tenures, including shared ownership and rent-to-buy.

The scheme is aimed at vital workers who are being priced out of the city.

Obviously there is industrial noise generated during working hours.

However, “once it’s knock-off time there’s plenty of peace,” Aaron says.

In terms of look and feel, he says the warehouse incorporates two different types of experiences.

“From the front roller door, the outlook is industrial – it’s definitely nothing like the suburbs,” he says.

“But from the back we look at the lake and there’s all sorts of birds and ducks and wildlife.

“And the beautiful thing is, we’re seven minutes from Coolum Beach.”

TAFE Queensland is awarding 100 scholarships to Queenslanders looking to change their lives and build new careers.

Applications are now open, with recipients receiving up to $5000 to study any TAFE Queensland qualification in 2022, from a Certificate III through to advanced diploma across all industries. TAFE Queensland chief executive officer Mary Campbell says scholarships will help cover the costs of course fees, textbooks and living expenses.

“We know the power vocational education has to change people’s lives,” she says.

University of the Sunshine Coast Spartans golden girl Kaylee McKeown is coming home with an impressive collection of Olympic medals after her success in the pool in Tokyo. Ms McKeown, 20, claimed three gold medals and a bronze at the Tokyo Games and now sits equal 16th on the list of the nation’s top Olympic gold medal winners, making her the most decorated homegrown Sunshine Coast Olympian. The former Pacific Lutheran College student won her first gold medal in the 100-metre backstroke in a new Olympic record time of 57.47 seconds and then went on to win the 200-metre backstroke in 2.04.68. As Australia’s fastest female backstroke swimmer, Ms McKeown was selected for two relay events – the mixed 4x100-metre medley relay, a new Olympic event where Australia claimed bronze, and the women’s 4x100-metre medley relay with the women bringing home gold. The local success continued as USC graduate Leah Neale helped the women’s 4x200-metre freestyle team to bronze, swimming the anchor leg for Australia.

$888,000

An $888,000 grant from the federal government has been awarded to Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) to develop and expand markets for Australian seafood exports. This will help boost local exporters Walker Seafoods and Rockliff Seafoods.

Seafood Industry Australia CEO Veronica Papacosta says a key piece of the program will be the creation of a one-stop-shop for seafood exporters.

“We are planning to create a digital platform that will curate all the resources in one place. This will allow our producers to focus their time on delivering the world’s greatest seafood to all corners of the globe.”

FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT Daryl Te’Nadii had to revisit some dark memories when he wrote his powerful memoir. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

I

n a gripping story 63 years in the making, author Daryl Te’Nadii has faced his darkest demons and most “chilling” memories.

Born in New Zealand, Mr Te’Nadii grew up facing troubles and “atrocities” no child should ever experience, and overcame two suicide attempts, all before the age of 15.

Mr Te’Nadii is now telling his harrowing tale in his memoir, The Orphaned Soldier.

“I’ve been trying to put together an untold story of what took place in my life,” he says.

“I just needed answers and the best way

to do it was to write things down.

“I lived under the community banner of the church to face daily onslaughts of beatings, bashing, humiliation and I had my dignity stripped from me completely.”

After 12 years, Mr Te’Nadii was reunited with his biological mother only to face further abuse at the hands of his stepfather. “[My stepfather] constantly beat me for no reason. He enjoyed it, I was his boxing bag,” he says. “Then my mother deserted me without notice. I came home from school to find out she had shot through and

left me with a man who didn’t want me and kicked me out. At 14 years of age I was living on the streets for a year, behind shops, on dirt, with cardboard to keep me warm.

“It’s not a proud part of my life and I get upset by it, but I had to eat out of garbage bins to survive.”

Mr Te’Nadii says during his early life he made two suicide attempts, one at eight and one at 14, and was transferred into foster care at 15 before joining the army at 18. During his time in the army, he spent four years completing his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and was one of only 67 to be chosen for an elite training position.

“I completed the Golden Road for the SAS and I was picked up to spend another two years in training and became a master coach in all sports and a teacher of physical education in the army.

“It was a very elite position; there were only 67 of us in that position. I’m very, very proud of that moment in my life.”

Another triumph was winning 29 Australian titles and two international gold medals in power lifting and body building.

Now living on the Sunshine Coast and working as a wardrobe and screen installer, Mr Te’Nadii says the 13-year process to write his book was difficult as he dug up his worst memories. “Having to remember those memories was the hardest thing in my life; it chilled me,” he adds.

“I had shut down my first 18 years of my life. They weren’t even in existence until I started writing this book. Memories – they

haunt me. The demons came out again and again. But I’ve gained a lot from it, and I’ve opened doors to a lot of people in my life and I’m grateful for it.

“Every chapter I wrote gave me time to reflect back on those moments, situations and people. The healing process was amazing. I have accepted more love and trust.”

Available in 163 countries and having been told by his publishers the book has “movie potential”, Mr Te’Nadii hopes his story will shine a light on continuing violence against children.

“My first hope is that the harmful life that was lived upon me will be recognised by the courts and the church and they will stand up and take accountability for what took place,” he says. “I want to get my message out that these stories are true, and they have happened in our backyards.

“There are so many people out there and they do need help, and this is what has happened and, believe it or not, behind closed doors still happens today.

“No child deserves to be hurt the way I was.”

Mr Te’Nadii also hopes the book will advocate in support of men’s mental health.

He has lost many close friends, and his own son, to suicide.

“I didn’t step up and ask for help and when I finally had the chance to do it, I’d lost too many people I love.

“I want them to be aware that when someone is struggling it’s okay to need a hand. We all cry and we all bleed.”

t least 650,000 new social homes are urgently needed as a result of the nation’s affordability crisis continues, St Vincent de Paul Society says. Vinnies’ national council president Claire Victory says more than 116,000 people are sleeping rough across the country every night and the federal government needs to intervene as a matter of urgency. The call coincides with National Homelessness Week, which concludes on August 7.

“The Society has repeatedly called for the federal government to establish a social housing fund of $10 billion to augment the efforts of the states and territories to address the chronic and growing shortage. Homelessness is no longer that stereotypical person sleeping rough. It’s people like you and me, just one life event away from a devastating change in circumstances.”

Older women are now the fastest growing group of people facing homelessness. Those who don’t own their own home and are affected by domestic violence are particularly vulnerable.

The report comes as Sunshine Coast

Council and Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Network plan to deliver information sessions highlighting services and support available. They will be held from 10am to 2pm on August 10 at Caloundra Community Centre and August 12 at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. CHALLENGE IS ON FOR YOUNG INNOVATORS This year’s Generation Innovation Challenge features a diverse range of business concepts from young entrepreneurs. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

he region’s youngest and brightest minds are coming together for the annual Generation Innovation Challenge.

Each year, the program empowers young entrepreneurs aged between 15 and 25 with the skills, training and business connections required to begin building their dream business concept.

Founder and chair of Generation Innovation, Ted O’Brien, began the program in 2015 and is looking forward to another successful year.

“One of the things I love most about the program is that it’s real,” Mr O’Brien says. “It’s not an academic exercise but a real-world opportunity for young people to unleash their innovative genius and take it to market.

“Now in its seventh year, the GI Challenge is proven to work and that’s why we keep on doing it.

“The Sunshine Coast is the most entrepreneurial region in Australia and it’s inspiring to see the next generation step up.”

“This year’s cohort is first class,” Mr O’Brien says.

GI participant Millie Gallacher hopes to address excessive plastic waste in the

gardening industry with her initiative Growbags.

“My idea is to reduce plastic pollution and improve garden health by providing an alternative to single-use plastic plant pots,” Millie says.

Meanwhile, George Carpenter is hoping he can improve the health and wellbeing of horses through equine electromagnetic therapy with his venture Sunshine Coast Pulse Therapy.

In a bid to tackle to worsening housing

crisis, Shelene Bailey is hoping to make a difference with Plastic Purpose Homes.

“My idea is to supply affordable and sustainable tiny homes to the homeless,” she says. These transportable, low-cost, tiny homes will be made from recycled plastic for those needing temporary accommodation.

The young entrepreneurs will progress through six stages, including signing up, a one-day summit, a polish phase, business panel, pitch development, and a pitch night. The overall winner will take home a $10,000 package to help launch their dream business.

A frontline worker’s plea Living and working in the UK, Jemima Hutchinson has faced unbelievable stress as a paramedic in a country ravaged by COVID-19. Now she’s urging her fellow Australians to take the virus seriously.

hen Jemima Hutchinson saw thousands of people taking to the streets of Sydney and Melbourne in anti-lockdown protests on July 24, she’d had enough. As a paramedic based in the UK for the past four years, she has been on the frontline throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and seen the virus take countless lives and tear many families apart.

In frustration, she took to Facebook on July 25 to give Australians a word of warning in the hope we don’t have to experience the horrors she and millions of others have lived through in the UK. Her post struck a chord, receiving close to 1000 responses and more than 900 shares.

The daughter of high-profile Sunshine Coast radio personality

Jemima Hutchinson at Redhill Ambulance Station in the UK Caroline Hutchinson, Ms Hutchinson graduated with a Bachelor of Paramedic Science from the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2016 before heading to the UK in 2017. Little did she know she’d find herself in crisis mode for 18 months, scrambling to save lives in the midst of a global pandemic in one of the worst-hit countries.

“The anti-vax thing just really winds me up. I just don’t understand not trusting science”

In her viral Facebook post, she wrote: “I’ve had to carry out a resuscitation attempt on a 45-year-old man. We were unsuccessful and I had to tell his wife he was dead while his nine- and 11-year-old slept upstairs.

“I’ve sat with an 87-year-old man and his wife (of 62 years) while they said goodbye to each other for the last time…

I’ve had to tell a 20-year-old daughter that ‘we’ve done everything we can, but your mum didn’t make it’. She had been slightly short of breath for two weeks.”

In her post she pleads with Australians to take COVID seriously and get vaccinated, saying: “You haven’t seen the effects of this virus and I promise you, you really don’t want to… This vaccine works. And it is your only way out of this.”

Heading to the UK at the age of 20 to work and travel is a rite of passage many Australians aim for, but few find themselves thrown into the deep end the way Ms Hutchinson has been, unable to return home, feeling her own safety at risk and dealing with death on a constant basis.

“There was a lot of uncertainty in the beginning,” she says. “PPE was an issue, no one knew how to treat COVID, we didn’t know what the exact symptoms where. It was really difficult.

“In all honesty, it was a very scary time. About mid-March last year, we basically started to get calls where every single job was someone having breathing difficulties, people who had never suffered asthma now looking like they were suffering from asthma, young people who were really unwell.

“We were just flat out, travelling massive distances in the ambulance

because we didn’t have enough ambulances to cover the pressure we were under. We were even being told, ‘okay, you’re going into a household where they’ve tested positive for COVID’ – obviously that was really unnerving.”

Ms Hutchinson contracted COVID in March last year. She had a temperature and felt unwell for three days, was coughing at night and had a sore chest.

She lost her voice for a week and her sense of taste and smell for three weeks.

Her sense of smell only returned to normal six months later. Apart from needing to clear her throat a few times a day due to some lingering mucous, she has fully recovered.

She has received the Pfizer vaccine and her only reaction was a sore arm.

She believes many Australians are complacent about lockdowns, quarantine and vaccination because Australia has fared well compared with most other countries during the pandemic, but says we are living with a false sense of security.

Having seen what she has seen, she is urging Sunshine Coasters – and all Australians – to take COVID seriously and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“Obviously, it’s incredibly frustrating that Australia’s rollout of the vaccine hasn’t been that great, for whatever

reason. The UK’s vaccination rollout has been incredible,’’ she tells My Weekly Preview.

“And since the vaccination of millions of British people, I can’t even remember the last vaccinated COVID patient I went to that couldn’t breathe.

“The anti-vax thing just really winds me up. I just don’t understand not trusting science.

“The people complaining about the side-effects of the vaccine, I want to scream at them: have you read the side-effects of anything you’ve ever taken, including Panadol?

“My grandma lives with my parents and it would break my heart if she died of COVID. I see people not choosing to vaccinate as putting my family and friends who work on the frontline in Australia in danger.”

Ms Hutchinson has an English fiancé and plans to marry in the UK when borders open and her family and friends are able to travel for the wedding.

After that, she plans to return to Australia to live as soon as possible.

“We won’t be able to move back for the foreseeable future,” she says.

“In an ideal world, we’d like to be back in Australia working by this time next year, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

PRIME MINISTER: GET YOUR SECOND JAB SOONER Scott Morrison has urged all Australians to bring forward their second AstraZeneca jab with Sydney facing an explosion of coronavirus infections.

The prime minister has been encouraging people to receive vaccinations against the deadly disease, which is becoming rampant in the nation’s largest city.

Mr Morrison encouraged people to receive a second AstraZeneca shot within four weeks, a gap approved by medical regulators, rather than the 12 weeks recommended for maximum effectiveness.

“I need to get the whole country vaccinated as well and the sooner we get there and it can be done safely then

we should,” he told 3AW radio.

Mr Morrison is expecting everyone keen for a coronavirus jab to have been offered one by Christmas.

The federal government has missed several of its own vaccination targets, including the initial benchmark of all people being given the opportunity for a first dose by October.

“By the end of the year, people who have wanted to have the vaccine will have had that opportunity,” Mr Morrison said.

As of last Thursday, about 17 per cent of Australians aged 16 and older were reported to be fully vaccinated, leaving the country well behind developed nations five months into the rollout.

Can bonds and equities continue to rally together? Bond and equity joint rallies typically happen during disinflation, with lower inflation driving the bond rally and the lower discount rate re-rating equities.

In the current rally, however, inflation has risen. Possible drivers of the bond rally, COVID-19 variants and China weakness, should not be positive for equities.

Similarly, the growth boom driving the equity rally should not have driven bonds to near-record low yields.

Looking ahead, possible drivers of a further bond rally appear unconvincing, including: • COVID-19 variants: in key countries with advanced vaccination rollouts, such as Israel, the UK and the US, there has been a pick-up in new case levels, but so far this has not led to a surge in deaths.

• China weakness: as the first-in, first-out economy in COVID-19, and with an export engine to meet surging demand following ultra-aggressive stimulus in many advanced economies, the slowdown in China has been surprising.

But China did not use the aggressive stimulus of many advanced economies and, in our view, faces growing structural growth challenges. The PBOC’s recent

In mid-July, with three states in lockdown, the treasurer conceded the economy was likely to contract in the September quarter, but was confident of a rebound in the December quarter.

CHARITY DIGS DEEP Construction has started on Wishlist’s latest ambitious project – an accommodation centre in Birtinya. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

fter years of planning, a Sunshine Coast health charity is marking a significant milestone with shovels hitting the ground on a major project.

A recent turning of the sod marks the beginning of construction at Wishlist Centre in Birtinya – a unique and ambitious project, designed to support patients and their families.

Backed by Wishlist charity, the centre – at Bright Place opposite Sunshine Coast

University Hospital (SCUH) – will provide affordable transitionary accommodation and distinctive services to help patients and families during their health journey.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the $14 million project will “up the ante” for supportive environments dedicated to patients who need ongoing treatment at SCUH. “The sod turn is a major milestone for a project that we have been working on for the past five years,” Ms Rowe says.

“Wishlist Centre will be a warm, supportive and stimulating environment with each of the four levels delivering a different service or activity to provide physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological support for patients and their families.

“Through collaboration and engagement, we identified the need for more low-cost accommodation to complement our existing Reed House and Wishlist House and while doing so learned that services to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our community were also required.”

In a major win for local construction, Maroochydore-based Hutchinson Builders has been awarded the design and construction contract for the four-level facility.

Hutchinson Builders is Australia’s largest privately owned building company, and chairman Scott Hutchinson says the local team is proud to work with Wishlist to bring this project to life.

“Hutchies are delighted to be associated with Wishlist Centre,” Mr Hutchinson says.

“We love to help with these projects, and we are proud to be continuing our work on the Sunshine Coast.

“Wishlist Centre will play a pivotal role in supporting the region’s communities in times of need.”

The project is expected to employ up to 170 contractors on site, and indirectly create about 60 full-time roles.

Wishlist Centre will offer 18 spacious and light-filled rooms, with single, family, and interconnecting rooms and a podium level with communal spaces for guests to use, including kitchen and laundry facilities, along with break-out spaces for

news community activities and therapy services to support the patients and their families.

The facility is supported by a $12 million federal government grant made possible with the support of federal member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.

“Wishlist Centre forms the missing piece in the puzzle in delivering a truly world-class health hub in our community and fills an urgent gap in health provision on the Sunshine Coast by providing low-cost accommodation for patients of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and in particular their families,” he says.

Stage one is expected to open mid-2022, with Wishlist now fundraising for an additional $2 million to ensure once open, the facility meets the needs of patients and their families.

ROADS TO BENEFIT FROM FUNDING Two major road networks will benefit from the federal government’s $5 million commitment to fully fund the Southern Sunshine Coast Roads Improvement Study to deliver critical business cases.

“From this package, $2.6 million will deliver a critical business case into the Kawana Motorway – Mooloolah River Interchange to Kawana Way Link Road project,” federal member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says. “A further $2 million will underpin a business case into the notorious Caloundra Road,

Coast teenager Jarva Efendi is flying high with his dream of becoming a commercial pilot

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR ASPIRING PILOT A 15-year-old is well on the way to achieving his dream of becoming a commercial pilot after successfully passing his recreational pilot certificate flight test.

Jarva Efendi, from St John’s College Nambour, was the recipient of the 2020 Nathan Slee GoFly Aviation scholarship, allowing him to do flight training for free to prepare him to pass his certificate.

Based in Caloundra, each year GoFly Aviation gives away a scholarship to a

young person to inspire them into the world of aviation.

“My future goal is to fly commercial and to fly around the world,” Jarva says.

“I’m in Year 10 now and I’m just hoping if I keep pushing I’m going to get there.”

As part of the $10,000 scholarship, chief pilot Mr Slee provides flight instruction hours for free, while GoFly provides aircraft use, insurance and study materials. Jarva has now begun his navigation training.

Mr Wallace says the project will also deliver a network assessment to identify future upgrade needs in the area, which includes upgrades to the Bruce Highway.

DICKY BEACH SKATE PARK NEARING COMPLETION Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders will soon see the community-designed Dicky Beach skate park become a reality with Sunshine Coast Council busy on construction of the new concrete playscape.

Councillor Terry Landsberg says the stage one works will provide a welcoming space and experience for locals and our visitors. “The works reflect the SS Dicky wreck’s significance to the local area and include open green spaces, new public amenities and the highly anticipated

skate park which the people of the Sunshine Coast helped design,” he says.

“I’ve been checking on construction and it’s coming along really nicely. The skate park walls are taking shape and I can’t wait to see the ramps, rails, grind ledges, quarter pipes and stairs in use by the local skating community.”

This month, work will focus on finishing touches to the amenities building, new boardwalk and landscaping. Construction is due for completion by September.

CRACKING DOWN ON DRIVE-OFF OFFENDERS If you can’t pay, don’t pump. This is the clear message from police to drivers who fill up with fuel and do not pay.

As part of an ongoing management and review of crime trends in the Sunshine Coast Police District, the prevalence of drive-offs was identified.

A common reason identified for failing to pay for fuel is lack of funds in bank accounts, so reminder stickers will be placed on to fuel bowsers to prompt customers to check to see if they have money in their accounts before pumping.

Local service stations are extremely happy to work in partnership with the police to reduce this type of offence and believe that drivers need to be aware that service station operators will be reporting all non-payment of fuel to police.

SECURE YOUR BIKES, OR ELSE In another crime trend, a total 246 bicycles were stolen in the Sunshine Coast in the past 12 months, with a large percentage of them left unsecured.

Let’s reduce this opportunist-type crime by securing our bicycles with an Australian standard bike lock and chain.

Ideally, the first lock should go around the back wheel, the frame and a secure bike rack or structure. Think about taking a photo of your bike and noting down any relevant serial numbers and engraving your driver’s licence on it. If you have had your bike stolen, report it as it may have been handed in to police.

ROAD RULE REMINDER: U TURNS You can only make a U-turn at traffic lights when there is a U-turn permitted sign.

When you’re doing a U-turn, you must give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians, even if other vehicles are facing a give way or stop sign. You must also not do a U-turn across a single or double continuous centre line. The penalties for making U– turns at intersections controlled by traffic lights (no sign) are a $110 fine and two demerit points.

However, for too many of the more than 28,000 men aged 50 to 80 in the Caloundra district, social isolation is nothing new.

“This new Caloundra Men’s Shed can now offer companionship, a sense of purpose and a place to belong for dozens of local residents.”

As well as the federal funding, Sunshine Coast Council contributed $2000, while the shed raised $10,648 for the project.

After years without a permanent home, Caloundra Men’s Shed is ready to grow after the official opening of its new facility.

The new 475-metre-square facility on Grigor Street in Moffat Beach will allow the Men’s Shed to increase its membership by 30 per cent and offer permanent facilities for both wood and metal working, as well as a paint shop, a forge and social spaces.

“For years we were virtually squatting in Queen Street because we had no long-term land tenure,” Caloundra Men’s Shed president Phillip Ashby says.

“We have always received a stream of enquiries from people wanting to join us but the old shed never gave us the space to welcome them in. With the new shed we are already beginning to expand our membership and offering more men the chance to get involved.”

Federal member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has been instrumental in helping secure $239,000 in funding for the project, promised at the 2019 federal election.

“Though it has taken a little longer than expected, [this] is the culmination of more than four years of hard work from president Phillip Ashby and the members of this close-knit club,” Mr Wallace says.

Forging inter-club friendships locally Recently the adventurous Sunshine Coast Friendship Force (FF) club had a day of inter-club fellowship at Caboolture’s Friendship Grove, which was the central meeting point for members from FF Sunshine Coast and FF North Moreton.

If you are like us and craving lockdown comfort food, you can’t go past this easy and delicious recipe from the wonderful Kim McCosker, the queen of 4 Ingredients.

SPINACH & FETA TART INGREDIENTS • 250g pkt frozen spinach, thawed • 1 sheet shortcrust pastry • 150g feta, crumbled • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten METHOD Preheat oven 200C. Heat a large nonstick frying pan, add 1/4 cup water and cook the spinach gently until wilted. Squeeze out excess liquid and set aside. Line a 20cm round cake tin with baking paper and then the sheet of pastry.

Add the feta and beaten eggs to the spinach.

Mix well and season.

Pour the mixture into the pastry case and fold the overhand toward the centre. Brush the folded pastry with any remaining egg.

Bake for 40–45 minutes or until golden and set.

OPTIONAL: Add whatever leftover roast veggies you have eg. pumpkin, sweet potato, corn, etc.

KEEPING UP WITH COVID Things are very hot in the kitchen, but there is no escaping the heat yet. The past month has felt like Groundhog Day, with flashbacks of the first half of last year reminding us that the global pandemic is a long way from over.

Borders have closed, hotspots declared, testing and vaccinated numbers are announced daily and, tragically, the death toll grows.

When the Queensland border was suddenly slammed shut to New South Wales recently (after the NRL teams and their families had safely arrived), my beloved and I got back home by a whisker.

We were snowboarding in New South Wales, a long way from any hotspot, when word of the closure went out.

We knew when we left less than a week earlier that our Premier was eyeing the dotted line on the map, but we were a country mile from Sydney and the New South Wales COVID infection numbers seemed to be headed in the right direction.

How quickly things can change. We may have avoided having to hotel quarantine, but the process was unnecessarily stressful and complicated.

For starters, the official Queensland Health website information was frustratingly slow in being updated. Close to a day later, the new order was published there. Without access to livestream media conferences or news sites, unlucky interstate travellers are ripe for the hotel quarantine picking.

The wording of the order was clear as mud and the summaries given by media were often incorrect.

If governments want to keep us safe, they need far clearer and simpler plans, and they need to share them more directly.

Some, including the thousands of protesters, have had enough, even though we are in a worse position than when this whole nightmare started.

The mass protests were wrong-headed, illegal and endanger us all. Sydney and Melbourne were in lockdown. In Brisbane, the lack of masks was largely not offset by physical distancing.

My cycling buddy passed on an analogy she heard that likened the protesters’ actions to residents during the London bombings in WWII, who were asked by the government to switch off their house lights to avoid attracting enemy attention.

The marchers’ actions are the same as ensuring houses were ablaze.

Such actions in WWII would have got whole neighbourhoods blown to smithereens. The protesters seem determined to similarly put others’ lives in jeopardy.

As the world approaches 200 million COVID-19 infections, our defences are simple: wear a mask, keep your distance and for Pete’s sake get a jab. Taking up arms is our only way out of this.

QR CODE CONTROVERSY

DANGLING CARROTS

It would seem that businesses, shops and shopping centres presume that everyone has a smartphone to log in using the QR code. Go to Sunshine Plaza and there is nowhere for a person who does not have a smartphone or the app on their phone to log in. Shops are the same. The QR code is displayed everywhere, but where does one log in if you don’t have a smartphone?

Do shopping centres and shops expect a person to wander around asking where they can log in?

At Sunshine Plaza, I found one shop, Kmart, that has a table with a form that can be filled in with your details.

In the July 15 edition I read a letter entitled ‘Where is the carrot’ with interest, taking it to be a tongue-in-cheek comment. Upon reading again, I realised that the writer is actually serious. I would have thought that the ability to not contract COVID and stay alive would have been enough carrot for the writer. As for a reward for taking two jabs, as suggested, this is indicative of the prevailing attitude that the government be blamed for, and cover the cost for, whatever society throws up. What has happened to personal responsibility?

LIFTING OUR SPIRITS

NOT A HAPPY CAMPER

Ashley Robinson says the Olympics has been a positive counterpoint to the ongoing pain of COVID outbreaks and is glad they went ahead.

Sami Muirhead’s experience of camping on the Dunga Derby was so unbearable she was airlifted out in a chopper.

O

bservations from the last two weeks of a little thing called the Olympics and of course, COVID. In these tough COVID times, there is probably a strong argument about whether they should have actually been on. Obviously, they are a massive risk with the current state of infections around the globe, but on the other hand what a great morale booster for a world looking for some good news.

I will personally go with option B. It certainly has been a good couple of weeks for the Australian team – the opposite of what has been happening in our country.

My Olympic week started a couple of days before the opening ceremony, and a day after that weird announcement that Brisbane was the winner for 2032 in what really looked like a one-horse race. I was invited to a lunch in Brisbane to celebrate the Brisbane win and also support athletes going or gone to Tokyo.

They had a Zoom call with John Coates, the Premier and the Lord Mayor, all there on the big screen live from Japan. Now there were a few things I found odd. John Coates nearly seemed humble; not quite,

but he gave it a fair crack. The Premier was very excited and hung off every word that came out of the IOC deputy’s mouth and then the weirdest thing happened – the Premier encouraged all 850 people in the room to have the rest of the day off and head into the CBD to celebrate and reenergise the city. Wow talk about poor taste considering the restrictions on hospitality venues at the time?

To be fair though, it was a great combined effort by all parties, our mayor included, to get the Games and it will be very interesting to see if all levels of government can make it a legacy not a liability when it is over.

A highlight for me at the lunch was when they paid homage to the Olympians’ parents, on the trials and tribulations of raising an Olympian. It reminded me of local parents who sacrificed heaps for their kids’ dreams and it gave me a warm and fuzzy un-COVID feeling, which made the trip to Brisbane worthwhile.

That was until I saw all those misguided souls marching in protest of restrictions on the following weekend. I wonder how proud their parents felt?

i! My name is Sami, and I am not a camper. I have always felt a little ashamed of this. I love a hotel room. I love room service and fancy sheets. I love a resort pool. I even love just being home in my bedroom.

This admission makes me a little unAustralian, and I have hidden the knowledge that I am terrified of tents my entire life for fear of being labelled a snob or a wimp. Why do I dislike camping?

Let me count the ways.

1. You spend days packing everything, from plastic wine glasses to portable toilets.

2. Dirt, grime, sweat and general ickiness (this includes wearing thongs while having a shower).

3. Sleeping in a swag (feels like a coffin) or a tent means you spend the entire night listening to rustling sleeping bags and stressing if any wild animals will break into the tent and put you out of your misery.

4. A cup of coffee is a cooking procedure not a pleasure.

5. Packing up and then heading home to unpack all over again and wash off the mud and dust and sand off every single tiny item you packed.

I know everyone will say sleeping under the stars trumps all these small issues, but I am yet to be convinced, people!

I have just arrived home from the Dunga Derby – Rally for a Cause. We put together a bash car thanks to very generous local companies and dressed up as Batman and Batgirl. Off we went through remote routes around southeast Queensland. It raised half a million dollars for charity and the people who received the money are very well deserving.

The charity pays for things such as funerals for those who cannot afford it, a new kitchen for a family where the mum has been diagnosed with a brain cancer. It is powerful stuff. Great people. Great scenery. Great fun. Except for the camping.

It didn’t help that naughty Todd who I work with cable-tied shut my swag with me inside it, placed a fake snake everywhere I went to terrify me and poured ice-cold water over me when it was two degrees. I ended up getting a chopper home because I was a bit pathetic.

If I do Dunga Derby next year (they may not want this princess back) the deal will have to be motel rooms every night.

SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESSWOMEN SET TO SHINE AS RESILIENCE AND GROWTH RECOGNISED Thirty-one inspiring local businesswomen will be celebrated at the upcoming 22nd annual Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards, which honours the hard work and dedication of the region’s working women.

ome of the Sunshine Coast’s best women in business are set to celebrate the 22nd annual Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards.

My Weekly Preview is once again proud to be the media partner for the awards, which recognise the success of the region’s women in business.

The awards have attracted the best of the best across categories that include Young, Corporate, Micro Small, Professional and Sustainability.

In addition, one finalist will be named the 2021 Outstanding Business Woman of the Year from the full list of finalists.

This year, the awards attracted almost 200 nominations with 60 submissions then narrowed down to 31 finalists. These finalists faced a panel of judges who examined entrants’ written submissions and conducted face-to-face interviews.

SCBWN president Min Swan says the network is excited to hold its long-standing awards in 2021 and celebrate women in business.

“I love that we celebrate the highs and lows of business and celebrate the courage of the entrants to come forward and recognise their dedication and commitment to their careers and businesses,” Ms Swan says.

“Each year we discover new people that we shine a light on and often hear of how life-changing the experience is

for them.”

In 2020, SCBWN was unable to run its usual awards process, instead reflecting on previous award winners from across the previous 21 years.

“What we did achieve in 2020 was a celebration of our past 21 years of award recipients through a ‘where are they now’ style of reunion,” Ms Swan says.

“Overwhelmingly what we heard throughout this celebration was how the SCBWN Business Woman of the Year Awards changed their life, their career and their business trajectory.

“We were honoured that so many participated in the celebration and remained so connected to the network.

“We celebrate the highs and lows of business and … the courage of the entrants” SCBWN president Min Swan

It was a truly special celebration.”

Ms Swan says the events of the past 18 months make the 2021 awards even more important for the nominees, who have been forced to adapt and grow in difficult circumstances.

“From my perspective, times like this make the awards even more important as entrants realise they are not alone and are able to reflect on their incredible resilience, growth and how they have adapted to factors out of their control and yet still succeeded.”

As judging chair for 2021, Michelle Hamer says this year’s entrants present a common theme.

“While finalists acknowledged crazy times, many found the time has allowed them to refine their business delivery service model and their processes,” Ms Hamer says.

“Another emerging theme has been the link of businesses to BCORP certification which balances purpose and profit.

“The Micro Small category is always our largest category, however, this year we have seen an increase in the number of submissions for the Professional and Corporate categories.

“This I believe shows the growth and maturity of Sunshine Coast businesses.”

In January 1992, a small group of women went to lunch to talk about all things business and to build connections.

It was the beginnings of a network that would go on to support, inspire, mentor and educate hundreds of women. In the early ’90s, members enjoyed speakers from not-for-profit organisations before Celena Ross stepped into the presidency and began to source inspirational business speakers, inviting women from across all industries in the region to attend. “I would stand at my fax machine for one-anda-half days prior to the meeting, faxing information about the breakfast to as many professional businesses as well as businesswomen as possible, as well as direct phoning and media releases, and would not stop until I reached 100 booked for breakfast,” she says.

Ms Ross says she volunteered around 20 hours a week for two years as president to grow Women in the Workforce into a regional network, which included putting the awards into place in 1998 as well as creating opportunities for mentoring and professional development for members.

ustralians maintained their sense of wellbeing through 2020 despite the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new survey has found.

While the adversity faced by Australians during the pandemic might have been expected to result in a decline in happiness, the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index report saw national wellbeing reach its highest

score in 20 years.

The report shows those who experienced COVID-19 hardship were often able to see the silver lining.

“Most participants identified positive experiences including better work-life balance, more quality time with their families, living more simply, having greater empathy for others, and feeling more grateful for the things they have,” Christine

The joint Australian Unity and Deakin University survey breaks wellbeing into seven areas, including levels of satisfaction with standard of living, health, personal achievement,

relationships, safety, community connectedness, and future security.

The latest report showed both personal and national wellbeing scores were largely within the average range and remained similar to those in non-pandemic years.

“The findings speak to the resilience of the Australian community in the face of major stress and to our adaptive capability as a society,” says Associate Professor Delyse Hutchinson, the lead researcher of the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index.

That could potentially be due to the availability of resources such as the JobKeeper payment, and a sense that Australia was “doing better” than elsewhere.

The 2020 survey saw a notable spike in satisfaction with the government, triggered by the active response to the spread of COVID-19.

It also highlighted how strong community connections help Australians maintain a sense of wellbeing through times of adversity.

Key trends in the data over the 20-year period suggest Australians feel a strong need to come together and help each other through tough times.

“These are times where many Australians put the needs of others above their own,” says Dr Kate Lycett, Research Fellow at Deakin University’s School of Psychology.

Not all hearing loss is permanent. A conductive hearing loss happens when sounds cannot get through the outer and middle ear. It may be hard to hear soft sounds. Louder sounds may be muffled, according to Hear4Good Golden Beach senior hearing rehabilitation specialist Lisa Burley.

“It is quite often we find clients coming in for hearing assessment at our clinic with a wax blockage in the ear canal,” she says.

“Sometimes these blockages have been there a very long time. The removal of the blockage brings immediate results. Human anatomy means you cannot look in your own ear, that’s where a qualified person needs to have a look.”

Ms Burley recommends asking your GP or seek the services of a hearing rehabilitation specialist to examine your ear, and have your hearing assessed as well.

Other, but not all, causes of conductive hearing include fluid in your middle ear from colds or allergies, ear Infection, or otitis media.

Otitis is a term used to mean ear infection, and media means middle. “Any hearing loss needs to be taken seriously, seek expert advice,” Ms Burley adds.

What’s the secret to staying motivated?

New reflux test available

It’s widely known that a varied and nutritious diet supports wellbeing.

However, some common foods could actually have surprising health benefits you didn’t know about.

Avocados. They contain healthy fats and fibre, boosting your metabolism and keeping you full longer. Just one avocado can provide 20 per cent of your daily fibre!

Coffee. It acts as an antioxidant and lowers chronic disease risks. One study published in 2017 reports coffee drinkers may live longer as a result.

Strawberries. They’re a low-calorie, high-fibre fruit full of potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants, and with anti-inflammatory properties, help to protect the body.

Dark chocolate. Although it has a lot of sugar and kilojoules, it also has considerable nutritional value, as long as you don’t over-indulge! Research has shown that cocoa flavonoids reduce our risk for heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure.

Naturally, any of these foods should be included as part of a well-balanced, healthy diet. It’s of course best to talk to your GP if you have any concerns about your nutritional intake. y

Motivation would have to be one of my favourite topics. Yet the word is such a cliché because when you are not motivated it’s not that easy to find your mojo.

So how do you achieve your goals and remain motivated when there is nothing left in the tank? It really is as simple as showing up. Having a routine and sticking to it is also very important as it removes the opportunity to make choices that could potentially break your routine, which in turn will stall your motivation and prevent you from achieving your goals.

Keep daily rituals like walking or stretching. Don’t undo good habits by taking the easier road. On days where you are struggling for motivation, commit to doing any kind of activity that will help you to keep moving forward. Doing something is better than doing nothing and it will help your mindset.

I believe we have five seconds in which we make decisions. These are “sliding door moments” that can make or break us. So, keep to your routine and rituals daily so you think less and act more. If you go beyond those five seconds, you are giving yourself an opportunity to take the easier option, which will take you away from achieving your goals!

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that can affect people of all ages, and occurs when acidic stomach juices, food or fluid reverse flows from the stomach into the oesophagus.

GERD immediately comes to mind when symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation are mentioned, but it is not often thought of for symptoms such as chronic cough, sore throat, voice hoarseness or recurrent ear infections.

HAVE THE ASTHMA CONVERSATION Asthma affects around 2.7 million, or one in nine, Australians. Many people obtain their asthma medication on prescription, but many others will buy their asthma medication from a pharmacy. The majority of these preparations are short-acting relievers (blue plastic device) with the most common being salbutamol (Ventolin or Asmol) which is one of the short acting beta agonist (SABA) drugs.

A recent study found of people 16 years and older who purchased SABA medications from a pharmacy, more than 70 per cent of the patients had poorly controlled asthma and were overusing these relievers. Use of two or more puffers in the past three to six months resulted in twice the likelihood of worsening asthma.

Overreliance on SABA medications increase the likelihood of admission to hospital with an acute asthma episode, but about 80 per cent of these are preventable if the asthma is treated properly. One of the main stays of asthma treatment which is underused if not omitted, is low-dose inhaled corticosteroid medications (ICS), for example, Flixotide, which are usually in purple or orange devices.

The Australian Asthma Handbook also recommends as an alternative to regular ICS, with SABA medications as needed, is to use a combination product of budesonideformometrol (200/6) product marketed as Symbicort, which reduced severe asthma attacks or exacerbations compared with using just SABA relievers.

Corticosteroid containing products require a prescription from your doctor so it is a really compelling reason to visit and talk to your doctor annually or more often depending on the severity of your asthma.

They may arrange a lung function test or undertake an asthma control test or primary care asthma control screening.

The last thing to consider to make your medications more effective, is if you can improve you puffer technique. Your pharmacist is trained to do this, so the next time you visit the pharmacy ask your pharmacist to check out your technique.

Ask about a spacer irrespective of how long you have been using the product.

hile the residential property market for investors is roaring along, the commercial property market is just as hot and likely to stay that way well into the future.

It’s gone “completely bananas” says industry expert and managing director of Colliers Sunshine Coast, Nick Dowling.

“Business confidence is pretty high on the Coast,” he says. “The industrial market, and in particular the industrial land sale market, is a good barometer of how the economy is going.”

While 12 months ago he had about 60 industrial land parcels for sale, he says now, there are no lots left.

“The take up has been huge,” Mr Dowling says. “It’s a little bit of FOMO.” He uses the example of some government-owned property at Coolum which about 12 months ago had 10 or so blocks for sale at $135 to $140 per metre.

He got down to one left – an odd-shaped block. It sold for over $200 per metre. An earlier block sale of $135 per metre then fell over and subsequently sold for $285 per metre. Many of these land parcels are being filled with industrial units then

The rents are also heading up, but not quite at the same rate as the prices. A place that was $120 per metre is now renting for about $140 per metre.

“In 25 years of doing this, I have never seen as much activity, both from the leasing and sales perspectives,” he says.

Looking forward, there is a downside to future sales – there is a severe shortage of industrial land. While the Sunshine Coast Council is aware of this issue, Mr Dowling

admits the region is “hamstrung” by its geography with the mountain range, flood prone land, a high demand for residential estates and a desire to protect the beauty of the region. The answer to the council’s quandary doesn’t appear straightforward.

If the promised new infrastructure can come into place quickly, particularly heavy rail, Mr Dowling sees it will add even more value to the Coast.

Rezoning land along this and other transport corridors for industrial use is a likely solution.

A

world champion wakeboarder who broke the mould of traditional schooling is making major splashes as he follows his career dream.

Mikayo Mundy, 17, is already in his second year of university and forging a name for himself in the filmmaking world with his love of wakeboarding and videography.

“I’m really excited to make a film about sport or something that’s dear to me – that’s the route I want to go down,” Mikayo says.

“People can look at my films a get inspired and look at the path I have gone down to make the films that I’ve made.”

Born into a wakeboarding family, Mikayo fell in love with the sport at an early age and began training and competing from age 11.

He began distance education in year 7 to allow him to travel, train and compete.

In 2019 at age 15 he was crowned under-19 wakeboarding world champion at a competition in Mexico.

“I stated when I was really young, and I just loved it so much I wanted to do it full-time.

“I stared getting recognition from sponsors and travelling around to competitions with my parents.”

It was on his travels he found his love for filmmaking.

“That’s when the video started because I was getting a lot of attention from sponsors, and I wanted to keep that going and I thought the best way to promote myself was through video.

“My brother taught me how to edit video when I was super young, and I would get my parents of friends to film and I would post it on social media.”

Establishing his own brand, Kayo Media, Mikayo picked up a few professional film jobs and after reaching wakeboarding world champion status, knew he wanted to turn his focus to film.

He decided to finish his distance schooling after year 10 and gained an early acceptance to study a Diploma of Screen and Media at TAFE Queensland in Nambour.

“Now that I’ve travelled around and become world champion, I thought it would be good to take a step back and really focus on my career side of things.

“I just turned 16 and started to go to TAFE,” he says.

“I was still into my wakeboarding and (TAFE) gave me myweeklypreview.com.au

lots of freedom allowing me to do my sport and study.”

The talented teenager has also just been named Vocational Student of the Year for the North Coast region at the Queensland Training Awards on July 23.

His TAFE course fast-tracked an early university acceptance, and now the Towen Mountain resident commutes to Brisbane daily by train to study film at Griffith University.

“At the start of this year I started going to Griffith in Brisbane and got to skip straight into my second year because my diploma counted as my first year.

“Every day I’m at uni I’m enjoying it to the max.”

Through his degree, Mikayo hopes to establish himself in the film industry. He said living in a world were anyone can take a video and upload it to social media, he wanted to put his own flavour on his work.

“I’m definitely wanting to have my film seen as my own work.

“I don’t want it to be seen as a product video for a company, which is what I have been doing for my business so far.

“Anyone can pick up a phone a shoot a video for social media. I feel like I would be throwing away some huge opportunities and all the knowledge I have and knowledge I’m going to experience.

“That’s why I want to put my stamp on all my work.”

The world of wakeboarding currently sits at a standstill, both internationally due to the COVID pandemic and personally for Mikayo who has been recovering from shoulder surgery.

“I haven’t been able to wakeboard for the past eight months, which has been really hard for me,” Mikayo says.

“I had surgery eight months ago on my right shoulder.

It was constantly dislocating for about a year.

“I finally decided to get the surgery because I thought it would be a good time to have this break because of COVID and I am busy studying.”

Mikayo, who trains at Bli Bli Watersports Complex, is hoping to return to the water in the coming weeks and says the time off has given him plenty of inspiration for his films.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds have dealt Sunshine Coast Lightning a blow with a pulsating 61-60 win at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

In a match the fourth-placed Lightning should have pocketed against the seventh-placed South Australians, they developed the wobbles ahead of a tough two-game finish to the regular season.

Instead of seizing first place on the ladder, Sunshine Coast are fighting for rhythm and will not have it any easier in looming top four showdowns against the GIANTS and the Swifts.

Lightning had no answers to a midcourt masterclass from Maisie Nankivell (46 feeds, 35 goal assists) and have now dropped consecutive games against lower-ranked opponents.

Lightning assistant coach, netball great Vicki Wilson, regards the remaining assignments as opportunities rather than hurdles.

“There’s two games to go and that gives us a great opportunity to find the form that we need,” she says.

“We demonstrated passages of it, but then the third quarter really got away from us.

“We know there’s not too many games left for that opportunity. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, it’s just important everyone starts finding that consistency and form that allows everyone to be at their best.”

The result was the Thunderbirds’ first victory against Lightning and they had to fight to the finish for it.

Last week I went to DI as it had been over 12 years since I had been up. You know, in the ’80 and ’90s, it was not unusual to see cars up there. Yep, pedal to the metal and they got up there.
