If there is one fever I’m happy to have, it is the Olympic one that is circulating around the community. A week on from the announcement that Brisbane is set to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Coast is still abuzz with excitement.

And, why wouldn’t it be? Not only will the southeast – including our own beautiful region – play host to the world’s best athletes, but the Games are set to inject $8 billion into the southeast and create 90,000 jobs for Queenslanders.

The future is certainly looking bright.

Of course the Games will also bring another positive, and it’s something money can’t buy – community spirit and connection.

Community groups and sporting clubs will likely grow as children and adults alike

feel inspired and motivated by the Games.

The children of today will be tomorrow’s athletes, competing on home turf, while others will volunteer or work at the event. My own seven-year-old has already requested spectator tickets for his birthday in 11 years’ time – there’s nothing like getting in early.

Hundreds remain in limbo

Sahab Uddin, 33, is one of 108 people still held on Nauru after seeking asylum in Australia

Australia’s stance on refugees has long been a contentious issue among citizens and politicians of all stripes, but for those living in offshore detention, the unknown is becoming unbearable.

A

fter spending more than seven years on a remote island just 21 square kilometres in area, Sahab Uddin is thinking about

giving up.

“Every single day my condition is very bad now; I don’t know what I do,” he tells AAP. Mr Uddin is one of 108 people still held on Nauru after seeking asylum in Australia. Some 125 men remain in Papua New Guinea.

All were sent to the Pacific nations for “offshore processing” after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s declaration – eight years ago – that asylum seekers who came by boat would never be settled in Australia.

Mr Uddin was 25 and fleeing political conflict in Bangladesh when he boarded the boat that would land him on Nauru in December 2013. Now 33, he is beset by chronic pain that leaves him unable to sleep. He believes he may have to return to Bangladesh, risking persecution and confronting a COVID-19 outbreak, just to get the medical treatment he needs.

after he was attacked and beaten. The limb is now five centimetres shorter than his left, causing worsening back pain.

In late 2014, he was transported to Australia for an MRI because he could not bend his right knee. But he was whisked back to Nauru before he could see the specialist that was recommended.

As the pain worsened, he suffered other blows. In 2016, one of his best friends on the island, a 24-year-old refugee named Rakib Khan, died suddenly as doctors prepared to urgently medevac him to Australia. Mr Uddin washed his body ahead of the funeral.

Mr Uddin’s refugee claim was later rejected, though he does not know why. It means he wasn’t eligible for settlement in the US under the deal announced in 2016.

Nearly three years ago, a doctor at Nauru’s hospital recommended he be given special shoes to even out his gait. He still has not received them.

The Department of Home Affairs has declined to comment on Mr Uddin’s case.

A spokesperson says the government had been clear that people sent to Nauru and PNG will not be settled in Australia and that they are encouraged to “engage in migration options”.

Of the 3127 people sent offshore since Mr Rudd’s announcement, just over 1000 have been resettled in third countries.

Around 1000 are in Australia.

As the deal with the US to resettle 1250 refugees draws to a close, it is not clear what the Australian government has in store for people like Mr Uddin. The company that runs the offshore regime on Nauru has just had its contract extended for six months, at a price of $180 million.

Amnesty International Australia’s refugee coordinator Graham Thom thinks it is “absolutely” plausible they could spend a decade or longer in limbo offshore.

“Without a plan for what you’re going to do if you take people offshore, you are going to be stuck with people for years,” he says. “Everything that has happened

since [Mr Rudd’s announcement] – the riots, the hunger strikes, the self harm, the suicide attempts, the violence, all that was totally foreseeable the minute they put this indefinite stop on people going anywhere from those countries.”

Last month, Mr Uddin received travel documents allowing him to travel to Bangladesh. He now faces a difficult choice: stay or go.

He says he can no longer tolerate the pain, which has stopped him sleeping without sedatives for the past six months.

His mental health is deteriorating as well. He feels lonely but avoids other people. If he talks to anyone for longer than five minutes, he feels “very angry and very sad”.

Though he fears the political persecution he fled and the COVID-19 outbreak gripping Bangladesh, he may choose to return almost eight years later.

“I don’t know, I am confused,” he says.

“I need medical treatment.”

New creatures have been found in deep-sea volcanoes. A 2020 study of a deep-sea volcano near New Zealand, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, uncovered “over 90 putative bacterial and archaeal genomic families and nearly 300 previously unknown genera”. Some research has linked hydrothermal vents, like deep-sea volcanoes, to the “origin of life”. So are we looking at the early signs of future land-dwellers? We’ll have to wait and see.

The world’s oldest profession Dentistry goes all way back to when humans first had teeth. Well, not quite that long.

However, one study has found evidence of teeth being drilled in skulls that dates from 7500 to 9000 years ago. The holes were likely made using a prehistoric bow-drill. Could that be the work of the first dentist? Other biting research conducted by the University of Bologna, Italy on a 14,000-year-old skull found that “one rotten tooth in the jaw had been deliberately scoured and scraped with a tool”, according to the BBC. That makes dentistry one of the oldest recorded professions and is definitely a reason to smile.

Help is at hand Homelessness Week is running from August 1 to 7, so My Weekly Preview speaks with Youturn, a local not-for-profit that for 30 years has been helping homeless youth to get their lives on track. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

T

he Sunshine Coast’s high housing costs, low average wages, social housing shortages and significant rental competition, as well as the impacts of COVID-19, have led to a growing homelessness crisis that has hit our young people particularly hard.

If you think it’s difficult to find a rental as an employed adult, imagine how tough it is for young people with little money, no job and no rental history. Almost impossible.

Young people find themselves homeless for complex reasons and finding work and a decent start in life can be a challenge. But for the past 30 years, a local not-for-profit has been at the coalface of the problem, providing tangible solutions to youth homelessness and helping thousands of young people turn their lives around.

Youturn Youth Support (formerly United Synergies) is a not-for-profit that began in Noosa in 1989, providing help to young homeless people. Since then, the organisation has grown substantially and now encompasses southern Queensland, working in the areas of youth safety, homelessness and mental health. From five volunteers supporting six young people, today the organisation has grown to a team of 180 employees. Last year it supported more than 6000 young people and in the past five years, has supported more than

Youturn provides a range of supported housing options as well as crisis accommodation for young people on the Sunshine Coast and in Toowoomba, with its most recent project, Big Hearts for Tiny Homes, aiming to raise money to build tiny homes for young people transitioning out of crisis accommodation.

“Since launching our Big Hearts for Tiny Homes campaign in August last year, we have worked tirelessly with our community and corporate partners to raise awareness and funds for this exciting project,” Youturn CEO Andrew Anderson

says. “The reality according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare is that specialist youth homelessness services have insufficient beds to meet demand and they are forced to turn away one in two people who contact them for help.

“To achieve our long-term vision of strengthening our community by tackling youth homelessness on the Sunshine Coast, we have set our sights on a substantial initiative to provide more access to stable housing for young people by raising funds to invest and build tiny homes.”

A donation of $50,000 by local charity

“At the age of 18, I found myself homeless and arrived at Golden Beach Crisis Accommodation at a very difficult time in my life. With the support and guidance of my case managers at Youturn, I was able to keep my part-time job and get my life back on track. The decision to leave Golden Beach was incredibly tough, but I was excited to be offered an electrical apprenticeship and I was ready to take on new challenges.

I have achieved things I never thought were possible, including buying my very own home. I am so thankful that this service was there when I needed it most.”

Waves of Kindness recently gave a major boost to the project, which is now well underway, with two Aussie Tiny Houses being built.

“Due to the generous donations received from our supporters including Waves of Kindness, we are now able to commence our build in July for a September delivery. The first two tiny homes will be based in the Noosa Shire, and we are working closely with Noosa Council, who has been extremely supportive of this initiative, to secure suitable land for these tiny homes.”

Noosa Council has offered to lease pockets of land to Youturn where it can build its tiny homes, while Sunshine Coast Council has expressed interest but is yet to make an offer. “As most people will tell you on the Sunshine Coast, access to land is really difficult,” Ms Bell says. “We’ve expressed to them what we’re doing with Noosa Council and they’ve certainly shown an interest, but the only avenue we’ve tabled with them is looking at partnerships with developers.

“We’ve had a few offers of land that have been a bit too far away from key infrastructure,” she adds. “Young people need to be accessible to their education, transport, places of employment. The land that has been offered has been quite a distance from all of that major infrastructure and is not something we can consider. A lot of the young people don’t have a car or a licence.”

Youturn offers young people, young families or couples aged 16 to 25 fully supported crisis accommodation at Golden Beach and Toowoomba, as well as semisupported transitional accommodation at Tewantin. The crisis accommodation is almost always at full capacity. The

organisation also leases 15 properties through a head leasing arrangement with local community real estate agents and manages an additional three properties provided by the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works. The tiny houses will add yet another level of support.

“The tiny houses will be available for young people who have come through Youturn’s other programs,” Ms Bell says.

“They will transition from somewhere where they were sharing with three or four people into their tiny home, where they are responsible for paying rent, but they will still get wraparound support from case managers. They won’t be left on their own.

“We did our research and we loved that Youturn is a local, grassroots charity who are focused on supporting young people experiencing homelessness,” Sam says. “As artists and musicians, we hope to use our time and talent to help raise Youturn’s profile and the work they are doing.”

“We realise that we have had a fortunate upbringing and we would like to give back,” Tim says. “We are aware of friends who have experienced homelessness and it’s a bigger problem on the Coast than you would imagine. Just because you don’t see young people sleeping rough, does

“It usually takes them three to six months to move through our crisis accommodation and we can now say with confidence that as they are gaining skills and getting things back in order for themselves, we have an option that keeps their support going beyond just a crisis situation.

“While living in a tiny home, they can build a rental history, get support from Youturn to manage their finances and do all those things that coming into adulthood would afford them so they can secure long-term private housing in the rental market and then, achieving the great Australian dream of becoming a home owner would be ideal.”

A lineup of seven bands was scheduled for April at NightQuarter but the concert was postponed twice due to COVID. However, organisers are now working towards a date in November or December. The concert will run for six hours and feature seven bands, with Tia Gostelow as the headline act, along with Shag Rock, Sametime, Toxic Fox and more.

“The idea behind the concert is two-fold,” Youturn’s Tanya Bell says. “It’s a fundraiser and all the proceeds come to Youturn so we can furnish the tiny homes, but the other thing is it’s a concert run by young people. Our youth ambassadors, Sametime wanted to have an opportunity for the young people accessing Youturn for support to be involved.”

WHAT IS YOUTURN? Every night in Australia, 28,000 young people aged 12 to 24 years are homeless. Starting in Noosa in 1989 and with its headquarters in Tewantin, Youturn now services southern Queensland, providing crisis accommodation, emergency relief, financial assistance and other forms of support to thousands of young people.

In this calendar year, there have been 315 presentations for emergency relief on the Sunshine Coast, with 29 families accessing general specialist homelessness services programs and 10 individuals being placed into crisis accommodation.

“They learn they can become valuable members of the community.

These young people think nobody cares what happens to them. We’ve had young people we supported 10 or 15 years ago come back and say, ‘Hey, I’m a social worker or a youth worker now and it’s from my experience with you that I want to give back.’ They have families and are married and doing well because someone cared. They tell us when they came to Youturn, it was the first time somebody actually listened to them and they felt like they mattered.”

$301 MILLION

Temporary traffic changes are underway on the Bruce Highway Upgrade as the $301.25 million interchanges project at Maroochydore Road and Mons Road continues. Southbound traffic on the Bruce Highway will be temporarily diverted onto a 500-metre section of the new eastern service road over Eudlo Creek at Forest Glen. The traffic switch will enable major drainage to be installed under the southbound carriageway of the Bruce Highway. “The traffic switch will enable highway traffic to keep flowing freely, and motorists will still be able to use Exit 200 to Mons Road and access to local businesses will continue to be maintained,” Transport and Main Roads North Coast regional director Scott Whitaker says. “When complete, the eastern and western service roads will enable motorists to travel between the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road interchanges without having to use the Bruce Highway, separating local and regional traffic.”

MILLION The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has helped save a record number of lives in the financial year, performing 584 rescue missions for everything from heart attacks to car accidents. The airlifts undertaken between July 2020 and June 2021 were valued at more than $14.6 million, with each rescue’s average cost estimated at $25,000.

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue director of helicopter operations Brian Guthrie says the record number is a credit to the highly skilled crews who are on the clock 24/7.

AUSTRALIA ZOO OPENS CHANGING PLACES FACILITY Australia Zoo has opened a Changing Places facility to help make a real difference to the lives of people with high support needs who visit the zoo. These facilities are larger-than-standard accessible toilets with an adult-sized changing table, ceiling hoist, a peninsular toilet, privacy screen and additional circulation space to meet the various needs of people with complex disabilities. Australia Zoo’s Terri Irwin has been the driving force behind this project. “I am exceedingly proud of our team at Australia Zoo who built this remarkable facility, a passion project that has beautifully come to life,” she says. Australia Zoo is the only zoological destination in Queensland and one of only two locations on the Sunshine Coast to introduce a Changing Places facility.

Sunshine Coast residents joined thousands of other Queenslanders to celebrate the announcement that Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It means big things for our region, say those involved in securing the event.

W

hen Caloundra’s Katie Wilke dusted off her Driza-Bone and Akubra hat last week, she hoped the Aussie attire would bring luck.

Whether it did or not, Mrs Wilke had her wish granted: the chance to experience Olympic joy with her young family with the announcement Brisbane will play host to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It had been 21 years since Mrs Wilke had donned her official Olympic attire,

but the feelings of excitement hadn’t faded. “My brother Ryan and I were two of about 10 students from the Gold Coast that were successful in the audition for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony, joining 1000 Australian musicians and 1000 international musicians to make the world’s largest ever marching band,” Mrs Wilke says.

“We had to memorise the music – the national anthems that were played as the athletes were greeted into the stadium – and the marching patterns.

“The kids got into the spirit in their green and gold, and had a wonderful time.

“They’re so excited to have some Olympic events here on the Sunshine Coast. It will be fabulous watching the announcement become a local reality over the next decade.

“I figured I may as well dust off the official Driza-Bone uniform and show the kids. It was so warm and comfortable I decided to wear it to the event. I guess the next time I’ll wear it again is in 2032.”

awarding the 2032 Games to Brisbane was the result of more than six years of hard work from all levels of government.

An independent economic assessment

by KPMG indicates the Games will deliver a total benefit of $8.1 billion for Queensland and $17.61 billion for Australia.

“I am extremely proud and humbled that the proposals first developed by the mayors of southeast Queensland back in 2015 have come to fruition. But now the real work begins. The world is coming to our community,” Cr Jamieson says.

“Our key approach from day one in 2015 – and one that has never changed – has been to secure the investment needed to support the communities of southeast Queensland including our Sunshine Coast, as they continue to grow.

“All partners have recognised that hosting the Games should provide a legacy 10 years before and 10 years after the Games events.”

including 90,000 jobs for Queenslanders,” he says. “Local companies and businesses right across Queensland should take the opportunities which will come over the next decade to contribute to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We’ve just won the right to host the biggest show on earth right here on home soil, but this is far larger than two weeks of sport. It’s about two decades of transformation that only an Olympic and Paralympic Games can unleash – a decade in the lead-up to the Games, and a decade beyond.”

REFLECTING ON A LIFE WELL LIVED It’s been 34 years since Chris Laurie was given a heart transplant, but the Caloundra man hasn’t forgotten the generous donation and the men who saved his life. WORDS: Peter Hall.

S

ome people wear their heart on their sleeve. Chris Laurie displays his on his licence plate.

The AHT-85 plates he has just put on his Nissan Navara would be cryptic to most but they mark an astounding tale of survival and promote the most precious gift one human can give another.

AHT means Australian Heart Recipient and 85 references that he was the 85th

person to be given a transplant in an operation involving the late, great doctor Victor Chang.

This was way back in 1987 when Mr Laurie was 21. He is now 55 and has made the most of his opportunities, having three children, a career as a dental technician and enjoying a range of outdoor pursuits.

He says he had been a fit and active Brisbane teenager, who played squash,

swam and surfed. But when he was just 20, he caught a viral infection that affected his heart. He was finding it very hard to breathe and tough to do anything at all.

Mr Laurie first became sick on Mother’s Day 1986 and was listed for a transplant in July 1987. He was lucky enough to get a second chance of life in September 1987, when “transplanted” at St Vincent’s in Sydney, as heart transplants at Queensland’s Prince Charles Hospital did not commence until 1990.

The famous Dr Chang played a crucial role in the operation. Tragically, Dr Chang was shot dead in his home in Mosman, on Sydney’s north shore, in July 1991.

Mr Laurie says he met the doctor at Christmas parties for donor recipients and he was the most humble and caring man he had ever met.

“My mum also remembered how Victor spoke to her while my operation was being completed, telling her I was extremely lucky to receive my donor heart when I did as he thought I wouldn’t have lived too much longer with my own heart as it was quite diseased from viral cardiomyopathy.

“The news he had been murdered was like hearing a member of my own family was killed. It was just devastating.”

Mr Laurie says his donated heart, from a 24-year-old male, and the doctor’s expertise gave him the ultimate gift.

“When I was transplanted, I was told I had a 10 or 15 per cent chance of living another five years,” Mr Laurie says.

“But I think it was pretty much guesswork back then and there have been many advances in medical science.

“To go on and have three children and a career is pretty amazing and I am incredibly grateful.”

Mr Laurie and his family over a few generations often holidayed at Caloundra and he moved to the seaside

favourite from Brisbane two years ago.

He wanted to tell his story to help urge more people to sign on as organ and tissue donors. DonateLife Week runs from July 25 to August 1.

The federal government also has provided more than $3 million in DonateLife Partnerships and community grants to promote The Great Registration Race for DonateLife Week.

The Western Bulldogs, Melbourne Storm, Sunshine Coast Lightning and Australian Professional Leagues are among seven successful organisations to receive DonateLife Partnerships as part of a four-year $4 million package to boost organ and tissue donation throughout Australia.

A further 14 community grants have been awarded to community, grassroots, and Indigenous engagement organisations.

The minister responsible for the Organ and Tissue Authority, Dr David Gillespie, says there are around 13 million Australians aged 16 or over who are eligible to register as an organ and tissue donor, but have not.

“For some of the 1800 Australians currently on the organ transplant waitlist, it’s a matter of life and death.”

Fast friends A Peregian Springs working mother who was time poor but lonely for female friends has created an event for other local women, and it’s proving a hit with residents of the Sunshine Coast.

A

time-poor mum’s call-out to meet mates in a fast-friend fashion has been met with an overwhelming community

response.

Peregian Springs business analyst and mother-of-two Emma Key hit the keyboard last month to let people know that even though she was flat-strap working two jobs, nursing a threemonth-old baby, caring for an eight-yearold and running a household with a husband and dog, she was lonely for like-minded friends.

In quick time Ms Key’s Facebook community board post received more than 300 likes, about 50 comments and 70 messages.

“I was shocked it was so popular,” a delighted Ms Key says. “A cohort of women reached out to me on Messenger.

“They thanked me for sharing my idea and encouraged me to pursue it.

“They also shared with me their struggles and journeys on trying to make friends. Some of their stories are

Emma Key and daughter Isabella incredibly sad. It proved that there are an army of women out there on the Sunshine Coast who are struggling to make friends, namely due to not having the time or opportunities available to them.”

English-born Ms Key moved to Australia about two-and-half years ago. She spent two years living and working in Darwin, before moving to the Sunshine Coast in January this year.

On the Coast, she continued working, though this time at home, rather than in an outside office.

Like Ms Key a number of women have

found the move from working at the office to home has left them feeling isolated, while others have settled a long way from close family members and long-time friends.

Some, although they wanted to make friends, didn’t feel they had the time to spend going through the traditional processes of finding, meeting and making friends. Additionally, having children and a limited family budget adds to the challenges.

“I have about 30 minutes to spare a day,” Ms Key tells My Weekly Preview.

“So, without a lot of time to make friends, I needed to find an efficient platform to make it happen.”

Because of these reasons and more, Ms Key hit on the idea of ‘speedfriending’, which is based on the same process as speed-dating. Ms Key says it works a bit like musical chairs.

“Women will embark on a number of quick-fire encounters and a bell will ring when each timed friend date has come to an end. Women will progress from one table to the next, until everyone has had a chance to meet each other.

“Women have a scorecard of which they mark whether or not they’d like to exchange details with another woman they met.”

Due to the wide range of ages interested in attending the ‘speedfriending’ event, Ms Key has organised three age-group events.

“There will be one for 18- to 27-yearolds, another for 28- to 44-years-olds and a 45-plus group.”

Her advice to attendees is simple: be yourself; don’t worry about running out of questions or things to talk about as these will be provided in the form of cards on the table – to use if you wish; and try to look for women who share the same values and interests as you.

Pretty cool: how Kasey Chambers keeps it real Though she’s achieved success most musicians can only dream about, Kasey Chambers isn’t in the business for the money or the fame, which is probably why she has gained fans from all walks of life. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

F

or a long time, Kasey Chambers couldn’t get her music played on commercial radio in Australia.

It wasn’t until she wrote her now-classic song Not Pretty Enough, about being ignored by commercial radio, that it deemed her music good enough to grace the ears of the listening public. The irony was not lost on her.

Now considered a living legend of Australian music, she has had five number one albums, won 14 ARIA Awards and in 2018, became the youngest woman to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. She has paved the way for countless aspiring young Aussie musos – not just in country, but in other genres too.

Speaking with My Weekly Preview about her upcoming Sunshine Coast show in October, she says she has been taking things easy and is looking forward to her first national tour since 2019.

“I’m living a simple, quiet life at the moment,” she says. “My life right now consists of school drop-offs and feeding my chickens. I’ve got a bunch of chickens.

“I live on acreage on the Central Coast a couple of hours north of Sydney and I just live a simple life and do as many gigs as I can.”

She’s been doing one-off gigs in outback towns from Leigh Creek near the Oodnadatta Track, to Karratha in

Western Australia, to Indigenous communities in Alice Springs. The random gigs have suited her as she gears up for a big tour in spring. She’s hitting the road to play 22 shows for the Behind the Barricades tour with her buddies, Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou of beloved duo Busby Marou, hitting the NightQuarter on October 31.

“I love those guys so much,” she says. “We’ve had backyard jams and done a bunch of gigs together, but we haven’t done a proper tour. When we were talking about who we were going to tour with, it was a bit of a nobrainer because musically we click really well and as people we click really well. They’re two of my most

favourite people in the world. We go fishing together – Jeremy knows all the good fishing spots.

“I also really love their attitude towards music as a career. Often I find people in the industry I don’t click with when their intention of why they’re in the music industry is for fame or money or status. I just kind of gravitate more towards people who love playing music and want to share it with as many people as they can.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the bull**** in this industry. It’s such a superficial industry so when you notice grounded people, you gravitate towards that. One of the good things about being on stage with these boys is

vulnerable in songs and being real is really what’s going to connect, so why hold back?

“I listen to a lot of hip-hop music; my kids love it and I do too,” she says.

“Eminem is one of my favourite songwriters. I love his honesty. Even though I don’t agree with what he says, he’s being authentic. He’s not following trends, he’s setting them.

“People who have long-standing careers are people who 99 per cent of the time don’t follow trends. They just create their own path and do their own thing.

“It’s not about comparing yourself and competing with anyone else. In any creative industry, there really is no room for competition in my eyes – leave that for sport.

“People say, what’s the secret to your success? I say it’s not a secret – I don’t have to have an angle. There’s no easier sell than authenticity.

“When you talk about young girls who might look up to me, a lot of that is because I am more than willing to show my flaws, as well as the positive things that look all shiny and fun and good. We have to be brave enough to be vulnerable.

“You can cover up your vulnerable side so easily in this day and age and people think that’s appealing.

“I think the opposite. I’ve built a whole career out of showing I’m far from perfect and just being real.”

you feel where everyone in the room is just part of that beautiful moment and there’s nothing more or less to worry about. We’re not out there trying to change the world or trying to be famous or put ourselves above anyone. It’s not about money; it’s about a beautiful night of everyone in that room spending it together.”

And though she has achieved the heights of success, that’s what it has always been about for Ms Chambers. She has music in her DNA, having grown up in South Australia with a musical family for whom country and roots music was a way of life. She lived on the Nullarbor Plain and travelled the country playing in The Dead Ringer Band with her parents and brother Nash, taking to the stage from the age of 10.

From her late teens, she was writing her own music and fronting the band.

After heading overseas to travel at the age of 22, she returned to Australia and kicked off her solo career with her acclaimed debut album, The Captain. When she followed it up with Barricades & Brickwalls in 2001 – which spawned her hit Not Pretty Enough – she became the first Aussie country artist to have a single and album at number one simultaneously.

“I saw what was popular on commercial radio and it makes you feel like you don’t belong and you’ll never belong because you can’t really compete with that,” she says.

“The irony of that was it was one of the most vulnerable songs I’ve ever written in my entire life and that’s the one that got played on commercial radio. It’s an irony I’m so grateful for.

“I still have days like that, where I look in the mirror and go… I look so old.

But it’s a good reminder for me that being

news FOR THE LOVE OF ORCHIDS Maroochydore Orchid Society is celebrating 50 years of blooming good times at its annual show.

A

local orchid society is celebrating half a century since the dream of 16 enthusiastic orchid lovers was planted and grown into existence.

Maroochydore Orchid Society was founded on February 9, 1971, and since then has been involved in orchid displays and shows with great success.

With around 45 members, the small, friendly group of orchid growers has a broad understating of the culture and requirements of orchids, especially growing them in the Sunshine Coast.

Kathy Howatson has been secretary of the society for 10 years. Her love of orchids began in 1998 after she was gifted a plant.

“I’ve always loved to garden,” she says. “My family and I went overseas and my sister-in-law stayed at our house in Mooloolaba and as a thank

“It has a beautiful perfume and at that time there were markets in Mooloolaba where the Coles complex is today, and I went and bought several more orchids.

“I realised I needed to learn how to look after them, so I joined the Maroochydore Orchid Society in 2001.”

Members and visitors meet monthly at Buderim Men’s Shed, where there are talks and tips given for growing orchids.

Members also bring their plants for judging and commentary.

With eight orchid societies from Bribie Island north to Gympie, Mrs Howatson says members often travel around the region to presents their plants.

“I am amazed, it doesn’t matter how many shows I go to there is always an orchid I have never seen before.”

In celebration of the 50-year anniversary, the society’s Annual Winter Show will take place on August 6 and 7 at the Uniting Church Hall in Buderim.

“Seven other orchid societies will be displaying their orchids, which will fill the hall with colour and perfume,” Mrs Howatson says.

“The hall will be filled with cattleya orchids, which are special because of their amazing colours and large, full-shaped, perfumed flowers.

“Many other rare and unusual orchids will be on display.”

The show will include plant and supply sales, and potting demonstrations.

The event will run from 8am to 4pm on Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturday.

A new University of the Sunshine Coast study by an exercise physiologist aims to discover the potential benefits of aquatic walking compared with land walking for people with early-stage Parkinson’s Disease.

Sarah Latif, a 2010 USC graduate, is undertaking master’s research after 10 years working in her private practice.

“Parkinson’s is a neurological condition that’s becoming more common, and walking is recommended for patients,” she says. “However, there is a knowledge gap for specific exercise measures and aquatic rehabilitation for non-motor symptoms such neurogenic orthostatic hypotension [low blood pressure on changing body position]. This hypotension can cause dizziness, increased risk of falling, fatigue and neck/shoulder pain.” Ms Latif plans to study 60 participants in the USC pool and on USC walking tracks three times a week from August.

IMMANUEL STUDENT FINDS HER VOICE

A

Year 12 student and aspiring signer, whose middle name means ‘butterfly’ in a Native American language, has released her first single on Spotify.

Recording under her first and middle names, Lily Kamani lives with anxiety, but is metaphorically metamorphosing into a butterfly to share her voice with listeners around the world.

The Immanuel Lutheran College student, who has a love of 1950s music, first wrote her single Campfire People for school.

“I wrote the song for an assignment, and I now have listeners from Chile, New Zealand, Germany and England,” she says.

“I can sing the Disney performance songs, but I tend to stay mostly with 1950s performance jazz like Nina Simone.

“I am still experimenting. I know where I can shine, and my voice is still developing.”

A mainly self-taught artist, Lily already has a second song in the works. “I have another song that I’m working on about my best friend; how I grew up with the same person and how we’ve leant on each other for everything. It’s about saying thank you.”

While her anxiety makes performing live a difficult task, Lily hopes to continue writing and recording music from her new home studio and to study after school to fulfil a music business dream.

“After school, my goal is to study communications and business and to one day establish a music video and production company,” she says.

“All my family are on the Coast, so I will stay local. We’re also building a studio at home in which I’ll be able to write and record music.”

OLYMPIC GAMES WIN TO BE A ‘GAME-CHANGER’ FOR SUNSHINE COAST TOURISM ECONOMY It’s the sort of publicity you could only dream of – until now.

The 2032 southeast Queensland Olympic Games have been confirmed and will showcase the very best of the Sunshine Coast to the world.

It’s proposed our region will play host to a number of Olympic and Paralympic outdoor events such as cycling, mountain biking, athletics and sailing, as well as football and basketball.

From a tourism point of view, this

is like winning gold. The Olympic Games will put the Sunshine Coast on the world map, shining a picturesque vision of our region into every corner of the globe.

It will contribute to positioning the Sunshine Coast as a world-class destination for holding sporting events – our natural landscapes and year-round enviable climate setting the scene.

The bid team for the 2032 Olympic Games has done an outstanding job, and we will be working closely with our local Sunshine Coast Council, and the Games’ organising committee, to build momentum and excitement over the next decade.

Given the current economic difficulties facing our industry, the announcement in Tokyo couldn’t have come at a better time. While the current challenges are affecting all our operators, the fact that we will play an integral role in a world event of the magnitude of the Olympic Games should provide optimism for the future.

However, until then, there is still a mountain to climb to rebuild traveller confidence and demand for the Sunshine Coast in the wake of the current COVID-19 restrictions and disruptions. This is where we remain focused.

CASH INJECTION IN THE PIPELINE FOR DIVISION FOUR I am thrilled to announce that Mooloolaba, Minyama and Maroochydore are among the division four communities to receive infrastructure funding injections from the Queensland Government’s $100 million South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program.

The Mooloolaba Foreshore Northern Parkland will receive $100,000 for shade cover, an important component for safe sun-smart play areas in our harsh environment. Outrigger Park, Minyama will receive $215,000 to assist construction of new facilities.

After receiving feedback from the Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club and other groups, I allocated $50,000 from the division four Minor Capital Works Program to go towards designing these new facilities.

The state government will also invest $145,000 towards two pedestrian crossings on Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba. An additional $40,000 from council’s Minor Capital Works program will progress the design of the pedestrian crossings. This is a very busy road, especially during the warmer months, so these upgrades will go a long way to improving pedestrian safety on Parkyn Parade.

A further $2.02 million funding will be invested in the Major Streetscape Upgrade at First Avenue, Maroochydore. This project will create a revitalised, appealing, accessible and safe streetscape for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as nearby businesses and services.

A Maroochy River woman is hoping to make a difference to the environment by collecting plastic bottle caps for recycling.

Cherri Deutschmann’s home is the only collection point on the Sunshine Coast for Brisbane-based Ocean Crusaders’ Caps Crusade program.

The project aims to stop plastic caps ending up in landfill, recycling them into colourful bricks that can be used to build park benches, bike shelters, and garden beds at schools, clubs and community groups.

Each brick uses up to two kilograms of caps and excess caps can also be used to create beams and sheets.

“There is a big push towards a circular economy, and this is just a very small part of that,” Ms Deutschmann says.

“There is so much you can recycle now and it’s just trying to bring people’s awareness up.”

Locals can collect, wash and sort plastic lids into colour groups and donate them to the project.

Ms Deutschmann says she has already taken one car full of bottle caps to Ocean Crusaders in Brisbane and is not far off taking a second load.

A Moffat Beach jeweller has won over the people at a recent awards event with her serpent-inspired handmade necklace. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

local jeweller is being recognised for her unique designs created with a 6000-year-old technique after her success at the recent Queensland Boulder Opal Festival in Winton.

Rita Williams, who owns Sunstate Jewellers in Moffat Beach, won people’s choice in the Queen of Gems Boulder Opal awards for a serpent-inspired necklace she named Renewal.

“I felt extremely overwhelmed when Renewal won people’s choice … as some of Australia’s best jewellers and designers are part of this world class event,” she says.

“I also was awarded the $1000 Taranto’s Opal Encouragement Award for my other creations.”

Ms William says Renewal’s design, which took 80 hours to complete, was inspired by boulder opals, the second most valuable Australian opal, and the events of the past 18 months.

“When I first saw these Queensland boulder opals from the Tiger Eye mine near Quilpie, the stunning rolling

flashes of colour immediately reminded me of movement.

“Snakes are quite symbolic of transformation and healing – so the combination of movement and colour seemed to perfectly fit.

“They represent fertility and the creative life force and as snakes shed

their skin through sloughing, they are the ultimate symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality and, above all, healing.

“As our world sways from one uncertainty to another I created this beautiful talisman as a symbol of our changing world.”

Ms Williams creates each section of her jewellery using a technique that has been used for thousands of years.

She carves each piece using wax, which is then set in plaster. Once the plaster hardens, the wax is melted out and the plaster is filled with gold. Once cooled, the plaster is broken away revealing the treasure within.

Sunstate Jewellers has been handcrafting high-end jewellery in the same Allen Street location since 1972 and will celebrate 50 years in 2022.

Walking, riding, running and scootering to and from south Nambour is now much safer and smoother after the completion of a new one-kilometre stretch of elevated pathway alongside Nambour Connection Road.

“This project completes a missing pathway link and greatly improves safety on the route between Nambour Christian College, the Nambour town centre and residential areas,” Sunshine Coast division 10 councillor David Law says. “It also provides connectivity between residential populations from the western suburbs of Nambour and the Nambour town centre, schools, sports facilities and the business precinct.”

Cr Law says the pathway varies in width between 1.8 metres and 2.5 metres. “Combinations of concrete barriers and guardrail have been installed to protect pedestrians and cyclists using the pathway.”

Motorists will also benefit from increased visibility and improved safety conditions at the Nambour Connection Road and Erbacher Road intersection, funded by the state government. The improvements were completed after a recent trend of rear-end crashes.

Third-generation volunteer elected president Coolum and District Red Cross Branch recently elected third-generation Red Cross volunteer Jill Ladewig as president of the club. Her grandmother was a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) during World War One in Britain. Ms Ladewig is a retired nurse and has spent many hours volunteering at the local St Mary’s Aged Care home organising and running activities such as hoy and bingo. Markets raise million across 22 years Mooloolaba Lions has been raising funds through the Fishermans Road Market for 22 years, and thanks to market stall holders and customers, $ 2.3 million has been distributed to those in need. This financial year $123,475 in aid, $51,275 in commitments locally and $36,700 in youth welfare have been distributed. An additional $25,000 have been put towards the environment improving local parks, with Buderim and Nambour Scouts, Maroochy Men’s Shed and Maroochy North Shore Lions Club assisting in those community projects.

Nambour Museum needs volunteers, including a publicity officer. Roles can include manning the museum, assisting with research, accessioning, filing, helping with groups, painting or restoration. The museum showcases the rich heritage of the local district, major industries including sugar cane with many old locos on display, telecommunications, education, health and local government plus other facets of country life that once earned Nambour the title ‘Hub of the Hinterland’. CELEBRATING SHORT PEOPLE As the curtain raises on the smorgasbord of sport, the Olympic Games, we are awash with personal statistics of those striving to be strongest, fastest and best.

The message is clear and the science backs it up – taller is better when it comes to excellence in human movements, and maybe almost everything else.

Studies have repeatedly shown that taller people get more respect, have a better education, have higher status jobs and earn more.

Growth has long been recognised as a measure of the health of children and auxology – the study of human growth – is used in every public health jurisdiction in the world as a measure of how healthy they are. From where I stand, such an evolutionary emphasis seems a bit unfair.

The nation’s darling Ash Barty is just 1.66 metres, and at Wimbledon this month she slayed Karolina Pliskova, a virtual giant at 1.86 metres. In the recently completed Tour de France, two Colombian cyclists topped the tape at just 1.64 metres, more than a full primary school ruler below the tallest (German) rider.

The highest goal scorer in Matildas history Lisa De Vanna is just 1.54 metres and 1.52-metre diver Melissa Wu is about to compete in her fourth Olympics.

Short people – elite athlete or not – are definitely more than the sum of their verticality.

I know, because I am one. At 1.56 metres, I’ve heard every short joke going, from ‘stand up for yourself! Oh, you are!’ to ‘you’re not even a half pint. You’re a shot glass’. A religious caller once asked me if my mum was home, missing that I had crying kids around my legs.

A ticket seller at a football ground mistook me for a child when I was 30 and I was asked to leave a licensed area for being underage when I was 25.

Short people develop solid comebacks.

I used ‘good things come in small packages’ for years, but now I tell people I am tall enough for my legs to reach the ground.

Oddly, being short is not a ground for taking action over discrimination in Queensland. We can be denied a job or a service because we are short and there is not a jot we can do.

The point is, height is one physical attribute we have no say in and no way of changing. Unlike boob augmentation or nose reconstruction, laser vision correction, tattoos and dye jobs, there is no reworking or disguising short.

But it isn’t all you are. We are not always just cupcakes, cuties, squirts or fun-sized.

So, I say to fellow shorties: invest your energy in important things about yourself like your attitude and how you treat others.

Take a leaf out of Barty’s book.

Life can be dandy, depending on how you see it, and we have an advantage there: short people are always looking up.

NO SYMPATHY FOR EXPATS I refer to the article in My Weekly Preview on July 22 regarding Australians overseas trying to fly home. I find it difficult to have sympathy for the McLachlan family who are complaining about cancelled flights in their attempts to return to Australia. This family chose to live in the US and have lived there for the past 21 years! Regarding other Australians waiting on flights from overseas, since COVID began the numbers never go down on the people overseas and the reason being is the government gives out exemptions for people to travel, albeit for many reasons. If people choose to travel overseas regardless of the reason then they cannot expect priority to come home. These exemptions must stop as they are also constantly putting pressure on our quarantine systems.

Ashley Robinson has discovered that when it comes to pet ownership, training is needed for both man and dog.

Sami Muirhead’s youngest is turning seven, which has the mum of three reflecting on milestones and memories.

I

f you are a regular reader you will know dogs are a big part of my life. I always had a dog as a child until we left the farm. Then I had a 10-year break from having a four-legged companion, but from my early twenties I either lived with someone who had a dog or had one myself. Looking back, I really don’t know how I survived that 10 years without one.

Anyhow, our latest addition is a kelpie/ cattle dog cross named George (named in honour of the last dog I had on the farm) and boy is he a handful. Any dog we have had in our household has three jobs: walking, listening and sitting with me peering endlessly at the water is one; being loving around the house is two; and not letting anyone steal my TV is three.

George has the TV covered. I have never had a dog with such acute hearing, so TV burglars are in trouble. He can hear old mate take a lid off a container from any part of the house or yard and immediately turn. (Like his owner he is massively food driven.) He has loving covered, but struggles with sitting and listening unless he is actually sitting on top of me. Walking

was originally a problem as he wouldn’t go past the corner of our street – which I think has something to do with his acute hearing as a dog barked during one of our first ventures into the big wide world and he decided he didn’t want any part of it and headed home. This went on for a few weeks and during that time he used all his pent-up energy systematically killing every bromeliad in old mate’s garden. Also during that period, he and his owner both put on weight due to a lack of exercise.

Did I mention the cattle dog part? You know how they round up cattle, and as there aren’t any in my yard I appear to be the next best thing – he started to round me up.

Things weren’t going too well, but enter Kylie from Elite Canine Training, who trained George and his fat owner on what is expected from all parties. I think he is a slightly faster learner than me and a whole lot smarter, but thanks to Kylie and the master of our house (who happens not to be me) we are getting there.

I realise how true this quote is: “Dogs do talk but only to those who know how to listen.” George, I’m listening.

y youngest baby turns seven this week. Yes, I still call him my baby, and tell him daily he will always be my baby.

I am always emotional around their birthdays and your youngest child makes you realise it is the very lasts of all the firsts for that age. I want to keep him little and with me forever. The day my youngest started school nearly killed me.

So many of my friends are happy when their babes go to school but that has never been me. I like them around my feet, in their pyjamas, tugging needily on my pants.

My son, August, was born on August 1 and has been pure sunshine to our family. Loud.

Cheeky. Obsessed with toy cars and Batman. Augs has big brown eyes and eye lashes that really should have gone to his sister. He is also really kind to his siblings and friends.

His big sister cried for two days when he was born because she wanted a sister so badly. His big brother wasn’t old enough to realise he had just been handed a play mate for life. And I must admit I really wanted another girl so I could have tea parties for three and twirl about in tutus and tiaras.

But the years teach us what the days never knew and rarely a day goes by that I do not thank the moon and stars that our last baby was a boy. To see brothers play together is a gift money could never buy.

This boy pack has admittedly brought things to my life I never even knew existed such as peeing competitions and jousting sessions with sticks and incessant talk about footy scores and superheroes.

But boys are so beautiful and straight up. They need to be fed. They certainly do not need to be clothed – my two boys love being nude. They do not seem to need my constant hugs and both take delight in wiping away my kisses.

Being the third child, Augie has pretty much raised himself. Don’t start hating on me as we have our challenges with our other kids and perhaps that’s why my third one really was a charm. Yes, he has me wrapped around his perfect seven-year-old finger! Last year he slept on the hard, cold floor in the hallway because he wanted to “get a head start on his birthday”.

I cannot wait to discover what delights he throws at us this year. Happy birthday my ray of sunshine, Augie.

STAY SAFE WITH ENDEAVOUR’S ONLINE ACADEMY Madison ‘Maddie’ Beresford has been working on a top-secret mission.

Maddie is one of Endeavour Foundation’s Secret Agents, playing a starring role in the Online Safety Academy.

The academy was developed by Endeavour Foundation thanks to a grant from the eSafety Commissioner to help people with intellectual disability improve their online safety skills and awareness, and to safely navigate the digital world.

“It makes me feel really upset that people with disability get put down online and they’re seen as an easy target and that makes them more likely to be a victim than people without a disability,” says Maddie.

“I think everyone should be nice and not be nasty and not pretend to be another person or steal their identify.”

Maddie says you should always watch out for people asking for your personal information and if you’re not sure, go to someone you know and trust.

“If a friend came to me for advice, I’d say to my friend, don’t give out your bank details,” she says.

“Go to an acquaintance or your friends because this person asking for information is going to hack your bank account.

“Or they’ll probably be a catfish –

they’ll pretend to be whoever they stole their identity from.”

For many years, STEPS Pathways College has offered a multitude of options for young adults with a disability or autism.

Whether a student wants to learn full time, part time or just wants to get a taste of the experience, STEPS Pathways College offers a program for every need.

The STEPS Pathways College experience is now expanding to offer another innovative new course – but this time in the renowned retail nursery.

The STEPS Nursery has been serving the community for more than 15 years and works to raise funds for STEPS Pathways College, Australia’s first and only boarding college for young adults with a disability or autism.

The new STEPS Nursery Program will offer students the chance to learn nursery retail skills, propagation, WHS, identifying plants and weeds, growing and harvesting vegetables and herbs, and garden maintenance.

The new course is set to commence soon and is delivered in weekly, five-anda-half-hour classes.

“Our nursery is such a peaceful place; it was a natural step to open it up so more students could learn in such an amazing environment,” STEPS Pathways College CEO Anne Nioa says.

“This is the perfect opportunity for young adults with a disability or autism to not only expand their skill set, but also make friends in an environment that is safe and supportive.”

The course also acts as an alternate option to the college’s new Café on George program, where young adults with a disability or autism can get work ready in the specialist training cafe.

Students who undertake the Café on George program learn how to make coffees, create sandwiches, serve customers, take orders and maintain kitchen hygiene.

Both programs are available to young adults with a disability or autism, even if they are not already attending the college in any other capacity.

“The life skills that are taught in these two courses are incredibly helpful, so it was essential for us to make them available to every young adult with a disability or autism in our community,” Ms Nioa says.

“We’ve seen a real difference in our students when they’ve had the chance to interact and learn in these unique environments.”

The Precinct provides the Year seven cohort with a welcoming, aspirational and technology-rich space to help boost learning engagement, encourage friendship bonds and ease the transition from the primary years into the secondary school community.

As part of the masterplan, construction begins on the new Secondary Design Centre in 2022.

LITERACY & NUMERACY FAILURES NEED ACTION Without a national plan on reading, writing and numeracy for adults, Australia risks being left behind.

Embarrassment is also a barrier and people need to be reassured they are not alone, educators and community workers told federal parliament’s employment, education and training committee earlier this month.

Language and literacy education expert Joseph Lo Bianco called for co-ordination, standard-setting and innovation from the Commonwealth. “Adult literacy is no longer a welfare activity by good-hearted people,” Prof Bianco said. “That’s not enough.”

He said Australia was facing a historic moment as other nations adjusted to technology. “We have to keep in mind artificial intelligence which, combined with cyber systems, is going to require much higher levels of comprehension and functioning than we’ve ever had.”

Australian Council for Educational Research spokeswoman Louise Wignall said aged care was another area needing strong digital literacy, for clinical notes and online learning for qualifications.

One in five Australians, or around three million adults, have low literacy and/ or numeracy scores.

ILC PREPARES STUDENTS FOR A CHANGING WORLD Young people today are preparing not only to join the workforce, but to also contribute to a world with challenges driven by accelerated globalisation and an increasing rate of technological development. Schools are asked to prepare young people for jobs that have not yet been created, for technologies not yet invented and to solve problems not yet anticipated. According to the OECD, now a child’s education must equip them with the skills needed to become active, responsible and engaged global citizens.

At Immanuel Lutheran College, the whole person is the whole point. The school sees balance in life as important and encourages students to grow in all aspects of their lives. “We’ll embed contemporary practices that foster collaboration, critical thinking and project-based learning, while maximising time in the timetable for teaching, and building strong foundations for future learning.

“This week, we commenced a major refurbishment of two buildings in our Secondary School which is part of updating our physical environment to support 21st century teaching and learning,” he adds.

COAST ON REGIONAL INVESTOR RADAR Sunshine Coast property offers everything an investor could ask for – lifestyle, yield and capital growth. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

I

t hasn’t taken just the COVID-19 pandemic to drive investors to the Coast – it’s been an ongoing trend for buyers to seek out opportunities to move their money into the burgeoning regional market.

Since before last year Coast Property Buyers director Simon Thomas says the word has been out about the Coast’s infrastructure changes, population growth and investment opportunities.

During the early months of the pandemic, property investment activity temporarily came to a standstill. “I had a number of interstate investors that had properties under contract here and they all withdrew,” Mr Thomas says.

But times have changed. An Australian Bureau of Statistics July report states, “new housing loan commitments have risen 4.9 per cent in May 2021 (seasonally adjusted) to a new high of $32.6 billion, driven by investor housing loan commitments”.

“COVID has been one of the biggest re-aligners of people’s lives, particularly interstaters and expats that want to eventually come back to the Coast,” Mr Thomas says. “We are seeing a massive influx of interstate people. These people

are buying properties now that they are eventually going to move into.”

Both local and interstate investors see the Coast property market, particularly houses, as a viable investment option when seeking yield and capital growth.

“I have bought investment properties for clients in the last six to 12 months for people, particularly this year, who are in their seventies and all have said to me ‘we won’t go overseas again’,” Mr Thomas says.

They’re looking to spend that travel money or make their savings work for them.

Mr Thomas’s hot tip for investors is to look outside of the crowded coastal market and into communities close to major transport corridors. Glass House, Bli Bli, Burnside, Beerwah, Palmwoods and Nambour – anything on a train line.

He says young couples who can’t afford to buy in Brisbane before they start a family are instead looking to the Coast to rent, particularly in communities where they can hop on a train and go to work.

Mr Thomas believes that while the city markets may flatten, the Coast market is in

a strong medium- to long-term position to achieve further growth.

With Sydney and Melbourne back in lockdown, he expects a spike in investor enquiries. It might not be immediate, but he expects it will happen very soon.

FINAL THREE LIGHTNING FIXTURES ANNOUNCED Sunshine Coast Lightning’s remaining three rounds have been revealed with Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) announcing the final fixtures for the regular season.

Lightning will play two mid-week games at Nissan Arena before returning to USC Stadium for a huge clash against NSW Swifts in a round 14 double header.

SSN worked closely with broadcasters and venues to ensure the full 60-game condensed season could be facilitated

– despite a number of complexities.

Lightning CEO Danielle Smith is pleased to see the rounds being played out of Queensland, culminating in the current top four sides going head-to-head in a USC Stadium blockbuster.

“Queensland has become the home of netball for a second consecutive season and it’s great that the SSN will complete a full season despite the COVID-19 disruptions,” Ms Smith says.

MICKEY WINS AGAIN AT NAMBOUR Nambour young gun Mickey SchimakOrrell added another honour board title to his impressive golfing resume when he teamed with Gail Campling to win the club’s 36-hole mixed foursomes championship.

Mr Schimak-Orrell, who successfully defended his club championship earlier this year, played outstanding golf with Ms Campling to shoot a total of 168 – five strokes better than runners-up Daniel Cahill and Vicki Reilly.

Net winners were patron Joan Grace and Peter Cahill on 138, while Bob and Jenny Huggard (72) were net winners in the morning round, and Fay and Charlie Cross (69) were net afternoon winners.

S

urfing star Julian Wilson was earlier this week looking forward to competing at the Tokyo Olympics, before he takes a step back from the elite stage.

The 32-year-old is excited be a part of the sport’s debut at the Games. It’s a scenario he could not have imagined as a talented grommet at Coolum Beach.

“I am extremely thankful to be able to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” he tells sunshinecoastnews.com. au. “I grew up loving [but] not even thinking about competing in surfing, let alone imagining that one day I would be surfing in the Olympic Games.”

Mr Wilson had readied for the competition by training on the Sunshine Coast. “I took some extra time to prepare for the Games by skipping the most recent WSL [World Surf League] event in California, which afforded me a few extra weeks to get into my preparation block,” he says. “Working on my mind, body and surfboards has been most important.”

A veteran on the World Tour for more than a decade, Mr Wilson recently indicated his time in the elite series could be over. He posted a message on social media, informing surfing fans that he is

stepping back. “I’m taking a break indefinitely from the WSL world tour, for my own well-being and that of my family.”

Mr Wilson and his wife, Ashley, have children, Olivia, three, and River, one, and he’s eager to spend more time with them.

“By no means am I calling it a retirement from professional surfing and the decision I have made is in line with what I value most in my life and that is my family,” he says. “The inability to travel internationally with them now and for the foreseeable future is enough for me to take a step back and be there for my wife and children.

“I’m feeling really good about my decision and really excited for what my future looks like with extra time on my hands, and I’ll be bringing some new projects to life, while enjoying being with my family.”

He adds, “This is not over for me but just the beginning of a new chapter.”

Mr Wilson made his world tour debut in 2007. He finished third overall in 2017 and second overall in 2018. He has won five events on the circuit, including the Billabong Pipe Masters at Hawaii, and the Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupo’o.

FISHING REPORT

Well the weather hasn’t been kind to get off shore but a few fishoes did manage an early fish on the inner reefs for some very nice sweetlip and tusk fish. In the Mooloolah, the trevally have been on fire in the lower reaches and the flathead are still being caught down at Caloundra in the passage with that falling tide working the best. The beaches have seen a few tailor around but the best reports have been for tarwhine and dart along Wurtulla and Warana beaches with that lateafternoon early-dusk fish the better time.

Borumba Dam has been the only action I’ve heard with some winter-time bass and a few saratoga that are usually a bit quiet this time of the year. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon has been the better time when things are at their warmest. Don’t forget it is closed season for snapper and pearl perch till midnight on August 15.
