In this edition, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw interviews Sunshine Coast author and former ABC presenter Mary-Lou Stephens about her new novel, The Last of the Apple Blossom. The novel, set in her birthplace of Tasmania, depicts the demise of the Tasmanian

apple industry. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms Stephens first book, so I’m looking forward to reading this one.

Finally, there’s another element to the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and that is the generosity of the locals. There is much to support on the Coast, yet people keep putting their hand in their pockets to improve the lives of others. Once again, donations to the Give Me 5 appeal have exceeded expectations.

Last weekend, we celebrated with Ash Barty’s magnificent win. The first Australian woman to win Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong Cawley triumphed in1980. The modest 25-year-old says it was “nothing less than a miracle” that despite her injuries she even competed. Well, here’s to miracles like that – may they long continue.

From crisis to business as usual Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s fourstage COVID recovery plan is aimed at increasing vaccination and saving his political backside. WORDS: Michelle Grattan, Canberra University.

he plan to transition Australia from COVID-as-crisis to COVIDlike-flu that Scott Morrison has announced is designed to send a positive message – and an exhortation – to a community jaded by lockdowns, aborted holidays and closed borders.

The federal government will increase the number on its sponsored flights bringing people to the Howard Springs quarantine centre. But that won’t compensate for the slashed cap, in what will be a blow to many people already finding it hard to return home.

On the more positive side, alternative quarantine options will be trialled, including home quarantine for returning vaccinated travellers, and there will be expanded commercial trials for limited entry of student and economic visas holders.

Under huge political pressure over the slow vaccine rollout – jabs are currently around eight million – a major aim of

Mr Morrison’s four-stage plan is to incentivise people to get vaccinated.

At present the rollout is being held back not just by vaccine shortages and other problems but also by hesitancy – and in some cases complacency. The bad publicity around AstraZeneca has contributed to hesitancy.

Under the plan, yet-to-be specified vaccination coverage will be the key to eventually managing COVID like other infectious diseases, notably the flu.

But the “post-vaccination” second stage of the plan won’t be reached until next year – assuming all goes well.

A vaccination threshold for the easing, minimising or eschewing of restrictions, including lockdowns will be set on the basis of medical evidence and scientific modelling currently being done at Melbourne’s Peter Doherty Institute.

Mr Morrison said of the vaccination threshold: “This will be a scientific number.

It won’t be a political number, it won’t be

an arbitrary number.”

Mr Morrison announced the plan after national cabinet, at the end of a week that has seen brawling over his encouragement for younger people to take AstraZeneca, despite mixed health advice.

He denied his Monday comments had been inconsistent with the official advice.

Under the plan, the country is presently in phase one – dubbed “vaccinate, prepare and pilot” – when the strategy is to “continue to suppress the virus for the purpose of minimising community transmission”.

The plan has been agreed to “in principle” by the states and territories. But given they have the power over lockdowns and other restrictions, they won’t be bound by its specifics. Also, the stages contain menus of measures rather than hard-andfast commitments.

The “post vaccination” second phase would “seek to minimise serious illness, hospitalisation and fatality” from COVID.

The Prime Minister said national cabinet had agreed on a “mind-set change”.

“Our mind-set on managing COVID-19 has to change once you move from pre-vaccination to post-vaccination. That’s the deal for Australians,” said Mr Morrison, who is just out of quarantine after his overseas trip.

The plan says measures in the second phase may include easing restrictions on vaccinated residents, such as lockdowns and border controls. There would be lockdowns only in extreme circumstances.

In this stage, inbound passenger caps would be restored at previous levels for unvaccinated returning travellers and there would be larger caps for vaccinated returning travellers.

Capped entry of student and economic visa holders would be allowed, subject to quarantine arrangements.

New reduced quarantine arrangements would apply for vaccinated residents.

The third – “consolidation” – phase would see COVID-19 managed like the public health management of other infectious diseases. There would be no lockdowns and restrictions would be lifted for outbound travellers who were vaccinated. Stage four would bring a final loosening.

There are not indicative timetables for the last two phases to start. The plan is largely a work-in-progress, as is the vexed rollout, but Mr Morrison hopes it will help drive the jabs, and provide him with some political cover.

Sunny Coast treasures It’s official – we are better than the Gold Coast (but then, we locals always knew that). Recently released tourism data reveals the Sunshine Coast had more domestic visitors than the Gold Coast in the year ending December 2020. More and more people are calling the Sunshine Coast home, and many visiting are discovering the region for the first time, so we thought we’d let you in on a few secrets. Sure you can visit the beaches and the usual tourist hotspots while you’re here, but we have a few other places – some of them hidden gems – that are worth exploring to get a sense of the real Sunshine Coast. Here are our top 10.

1. Sink a cold one While the Sunshine Coast is known for its many beaches and seaside communities, the region’s prosperity and population was once based on farming and timber getting and our country towns are worth a visit. Many of these communities have a lot going for them, including their own HISTORIC COUNTRY PUBS that offer so much more than a schooner of beer and a greasy chicken parmi. For an authentic experience, great food and some Insta-worthy photo opportunities, visit The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi, Beerwah Hotel, Hotel Maleny, or the pubs in Palmwoods, Yandina or Woombye.

In town, there are cool cafes, the Nambour Book Exchange (the biggest and best second-hand bookstore on the Coast), pubs, vintage stores, a pinball parlour, comic book store, street art and friendly locals who are hugely passionate and proud of their town. Don’t leave without visiting Cilento Park – a pretty green space with a hidden waterfall.

5. See the other zoo Australia Zoo is world famous, but there’s another zoo in the region – WILDLIFE HQ – that we also love. Located near the Big Pineapple, the zoo doesn’t have the size and scale of Australia Zoo, but it has loads of animal species and at $89 for a family ticket, a visit here is affordable for most.

You can take part in an animal feeding encounter or have your photo taken with a koala, before enjoying morning tea or lunch at the onsite cafe.

2. Explore our arteries Call us biased, but when it comes to artistic credentials, we think the Sunshine Coast well and truly punches above its weight. If you don’t believe us, just pop into one of our many ART GALLERIES and see for yourself. The Caloundra Regional Gallery and University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery have exhibitions, education programs and activities all year round. But if you can’t get to Caloundra or out to Sippy Downs, we can guarantee there will be an art gallery near you – privately owned galleries and artists’ studios are dotted around the region.

The region’s rich colonial history is preserved in several HISTORIC HOMES AND MUSEUMS. These include Buderim’s Pioneer Cottage, a circa 1882 home located on the top of Buderim; the Grigor family’s old home Bankfoot House in Glass House Mountains; and Maleny’s Fairview, built in 1907 by the Pattemore family. Yandina Historic House and Landsborough Museum are also great examples of old homes filled with memorabilia and charm.

The pristine, narrow waterway that separates Caloundra from Bribie Island is home to dugongs, dolphins, turtles, fish and an incredible array of birds. If you’re in or near Caloundra, you really have to check out PUMICESTONE PASSAGE, and to experience it at its best, we recommend you hire a boat, kayak or stand-up paddle board from the Caloundra side, and cruise over to Bribie. If you prefer to stay on dry land, hire a bike and pedal your way along the path that hugs the shore.

The WHALE WATCHING season has begun and it runs until October/November, so tour operators are busy filling spots on their boats. A few companies offer whale watching cruises and some offer swimwith-the-whales experiences. If you’d rather not step on a boat, there is a chance you’ll see whales from land – head to Point Arkwright near Coolum, Point Cartwright or Moffat headland to see these magnificent creatures frolicking not that far off shore.

OLYMPICS BID FOR COAST MASSIVE NRL MOVE TO COAST The Sunshine Coast will help host teams and games as the NRL shifts 12 clubs out of NSW and the ACT and into South-East Queensland. The dramatic move, forced by NSW’s escalating COVID-19 situation, has been locked in for at least a month. The NRL will reschedule 23 games originally booked in for NSW as hundreds of players and staff prepare for a relocation into Queensland that could extend the length of the season. Twelve clubs based in NSW and the ACT will be shifted into hubs in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast by Wednesday for at least a month. On the Sunshine Coast, teams are expected to stay at the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort at Twin Waters, formerly a seasonal home to Melbourne Storm. Games scheduled for the next four rounds will be revised and moved to Suncorp Stadium, Cbus Super Stadium and Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Two Sunshine Coast women are backing Maroochydore as an Olympics venue for basketball. Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson and president of the Sunshine Coast Arts Convention and Entertainment Association Alison Barry-Jones are hoping to gain council and state government support for the project, saying it is a golden opportunity that can deliver the long-awaited Sunshine Coast Arts, Convention and Exhibition Centre. “Maroochydore was the first choice in the IOC Olympics Feasibility Report, but we need the council and the state government not to back away from this recommendation,” Ms Simpson says. “This could be a win-win in delivering the first stage of a desperately needed multi-use arts, convention and entertainment facility, which could stage events like the preliminary basketball games.”

Nominations for Open Minds’ annual Queensland Mental Health Week Achievement Awards, with $5000 available in prize money are now open. In its 25th year, the awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of those working to reduce stigma and empower people living with mental illnesses. “As statistics have demonstrated, the pandemic has taken its toll on the mental health of Australians,” Open Minds CEO Paula Mayson says. “This is why we feel it is more important than ever to recognise the achievements of those in the mental health sector who are working to improve the lives of those living with mental illnesses.” There are 11 categories, with submissions closing on August 2. Celebrity chef Alastair McLeod has made a special visit to STEPS Pathways College. During his visit, he took the time to look at two of STEPS Pathways College’s culinary spaces: the specialised kitchen where the students learn to cook and the newly built Cafe on George, where students can gain work experience in a supported space. Students showed off their skills in the kitchen, cooking local barramundi to receive positive feedback from Mr McLeod, and served sandwiches and coffee from the cafe. “It really highlighted that food and cooking is not only an important skill, but it’s also an excellent communicator,” Mr McLeod says. “The success of any cafe is as much about the quality of food and coffee as it is about hospitality, and the students gave both in spades.” His visit comes in anticipation of the STEPS Grand Winter Ball on July 24 to raise money for the college. hale watching season has officially kicked off on the Sunshine Coast as 35,000 humpback whales begin to migrate past the region.

Sunreef Mooloolaba’s Dan Hart says the number of whales migrating north along Australia’s east coast continues to increase by 10 per cent annually.

“If last year’s season is anything to go by, we will see whales from now through until the end of the season in early November, and we expect we can expect more than 25,000 people on our whale watching and swim with

whales experiences.

“We are already seeing good numbers of whales and expect to see adult whales looking for mates, mums ready to calve in the warmer waters, as well as juvenile whales travelling in pods.”

Mr Hart says whale watching tours will be onboard Whale One, which

underwent a refurbishment in 2019, while swim with whales tours use Sunreef’s fast boats.

In celebration of the season, Sunreef Mooloolaba is also launching a 24-metre whale watching boat to give guests the best experience to see these majestic animals up close in their natural environment.

The T6 has been brought down from Cairns for the season in anticipation of continuing company growth.

“T6 is an incredible vessel for up to 100 guests with great whale watching viewing on the top deck, both inside and outside, and great viewing on the bow, stern and inside on the bottom level as well,” Mr Hart says.

“We are trialling T6 to see how she could potentially extend our whale watching, scuba diving and snorkelling offerings throughout the year.”

Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason O’Pray says whale season is an important part of winter tourism for the Sunshine Coast.

“Whale watching season is an economic driver for the tourism sector, during what is traditionally a quieter period,” Mr O’Pray says.

“It brings in visitors, who spend not just on whale watching but also on accommodation, hospitality and other attractions, which in turn creates employment and I just love it!”

The season runs until October 31, with the swim with whales experiences finishing on October 17.

he 92.7 Mix FM team have raised another outstanding amount of $531,033 in this year’s Give Me 5 campaign. Totalled up over two decades, Give Me 5 has raised more than $6 million for sick kids on the Sunshine Coast.

Portraits of Mankind Megan Gill has spent four years photographing Sunshine Coast men and now her work is being used to spread awareness about our high rate of male suicide. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

S

unshine Coast portrait photographer Megan Gill has teamed up with the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute in a collaboration that uses beautiful images to tell the stories of the mental health struggles facing our men today.

On the Sunshine Coast, males represent four out of five suicides and our suicide rate is 9.1 per cent higher than the national average.

Ms Gill was attending a networking event for USC’s Alliance for Suicide Prevention, when she was inspired to offer her portraits of Sunshine Coast men

who have beaten major challenges and come out the other side.

“I had done an exhibition on women in 2017 and the husband of one of the ladies in the exhibition, Daniel Bennett, suggested I should do something like that for men. At first I thought it was quite funny, because I do beauty portraits for women. But after thinking about it, I realised it could benefit men and began to think about themes.

“We started with Daniel and not long after that, Daniel lost a friend to suicide.

We began to have conversations about the state of men’s mental health and the way society expects men to be. I was fleshing out the idea and with the next man I photographed, it just became evident that the issue of mental health was really important.”

Ms Gill quickly realised the men didn’t feel comfortable in a studio environment and decided to photograph them in outdoor settings of their choice, which had significance for them.

“The men in the photos have actually

been able to admit they needed help at some stage, or they have created space to help others,” Ms Gill says. “They may look tough, but these men all have a nurturing quality about them.

A lot of them have created charities or foundations – it’s really a theme running though.

“I’ve been taking portraits of men for four years and just building this body of work. I was looking for an avenue to release it, because I didn’t want it to be just about my portraits; I wanted it to attach to a greater message.”

Elise Jione, general manager of the Thompson Institute, says the idea of a public awareness campaign about the need for men to seek help through running an extended exhibition of Ms Gill’s work was a natural fit.

“What we found engaging with Megan’s work is the way she has been able to make the men of the Sunshine Coast open up and talk about important issues. Our call to action is to promote men who are struggling with mental health issues to seek help, to look out for themselves and to look out for others.

Mary-Lou’s story of love and loss Sunshine Coast author Mary-Lou Stephens releases her first novel, a poignant story about Tasmania’s apple industry and the families who were left devastated when it collapsed. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ary-Lou Stephens says writing a novel about the heartbreaking demise of the Tasmanian apple industry really tapped into her core – no pun intended. Her debut novel, The Last of the Apple Blossom is set in the Huon Valley and tells a story so close to her heart, she finds it difficult to discuss it without crying.

Raised in Tasmania, the Sunshine Coast author and former ABC radio presenter says the idea for the book came out of nowhere back in 2017 and haunted her until she gave in and wrote it.

“It was just really weird; one of these bolt-from-the-blue things that suddenly hit me,” she says. “I thought, are you kidding me? Where has this come from? It was really quite strange. To be honest, the idea of it terrified me because I thought, it will be a really big book with a lot of sadness and trauma. I just went, I don’t want to write this book. I thought, it’s too big, it’s too sad, I know nothing about growing apples, even though I grew up in Tasmania.

The idea came the day she interviewed author Monica McInerney. During the interview, they discussed grief and how it informed Ms McInerney’s writing. That afternoon, the premise of The Last of the Apple Blossom revealed itself and Ms McInerney insisted Ms Stephens write the book.

“In a wonderful turn of events, Monica became my mentor through the Australian Society of Authors mentorship program, and guided me through the final

drafts before I submitted to publishers,” Ms Stephens says.

“Monica was brilliant, but tough. She really put me through my paces, but she was also warm, kind and generous.”

Sunny Coasters will know Ms Stephens as a local media identity and author of the memoir Sex, Drugs and Meditation. This is the fourth novel she has written, but the first to be published, and it has taken her more than a decade to find her perfect genre in historical fiction.

“The thing with historical fiction is you do a stack of research. I did a lot of online and book research, reading of academic documents, PhD theses, all that kind of stuff. But nothing can really beat being on the ground, seeing the lay of the land. Going to Tasmania in November 2018 and talking to the old orchardists was just astounding.”

Apples were an important crop in Tasmania from early colonial settlement and when Britain joined the European Common Market in the early 1970s, essentially cutting off trade, the industry collapsed. The government implemented the Tree Pull Scheme and between 1972 and 1975, many

Huon Valley farmers took advantage of this. Over the course of a decade, 700 orchardists left the industry.

“Many were tending orchards that had been in their families for generations,” Ms Stephens says. “For all that love and hard work to be bulldozed into the ground when the industry collapsed would have been almost impossible to bear. A line I heard in one of the orchidist’s oral histories haunted me through the writing of the book: ‘I worked my entire life for nothing’.

“I don’t believe it was for nothing. Their stories and their lives are important. The orchardists created beauty and purpose. Tasmania was the Apple Isle because of them – an enormous achievement. It might not have lasted, but everything is ephemeral in the end. To work and to create, to live a useful life, that is not nothing.”

While the book is set during the period from 1967 to 1977, it’s also a contemporary story that reflects the hardships faced by farmers today.

“Writing this book certainly gave me a whole new level of respect for our primary producers,” Ms Stephens says. “It highlighted just how tough it can be to make a living from the land. Often we buy our fruit and vegetables without ever thinking about the time and toil it’s taken for them to get to us. Every piece of fruit has a story, as does every vegetable.

“The Last of the Apple Blossom is about love on so many levels – romantic love, love of family and children, love of music and friends – and all the way through there is the love of the land, the trees, the way of life, the Huon Valley and of nature. It is a reminder of the changes Australia went through in the 1960s and ’70s and how we navigated those changes. Everything always changes but some things always hold true – love, respect, friendship, integrity. The Last of the Apple Blossom is a testament to our ability to navigate our way through hard times and come through them with the ingenuity and the support of those who love us.”

To further help young girls attend their school formals, the store is donating a portion of its profit to a community dress program.

“Ten per cent of all the sales at Ella & Pip go towards sponsoring girls to attend school formals through local schools,” Ms Becker says.

“We had a girl last year – we paid for the hair, the makeup, the outfit, the shoes, everything.

“It’s all about helping each other.”

Exciting projects nearing completion

I am pleased to have lodged a petition on June 24 at council’s ordinary meeting in relation to vehicle and pedestrian access at Moffat Beach following community concern. With more than 1300 signatures, the petition requested council address the growing pressures on the precinct as a result of increased traffic volumes, hooning, speeding and vehicle noise. As a result, divisional funding has been secured for a traffic study to be undertaken by an independent consultant to investigate future safety improvements for pedestrian accessibility, vehicle movements and shared zones at Moffat Beach.

Two capital projects in division two are nearing completion. Stage one construction of the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan is well underway with completion expected in September 2021. Stage one of the Caloundra Town Reserve Mountain Bike Trails on Sugar Bag Road is also due for completion in the coming months. The project will deliver new toilets, showers, wash-down bays and storage, a new trail, dual slalom run, an advanced skills area and a junior skills area for children.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE HAD A CRASH You’ve had a traffic crash. What do you do now?

Did you know that to help reduce danger to road users and minimise traffic congestion you no longer have to wait for police at a crash site in Queensland? Since 2015, changes were made to the policy to reduce these calls, allowing officers to respond to more urgent matters. However, police will still be required to attend traffic crashes that involve any of the following circumstances: • Death or injury (injury requiring medical treatment by a qualified paramedic, nurse or doctor).

• Suspected involvement of drugs or alcohol.

• Driver has failed or is refusing to provide required details.

• A hazardous environment or threat to public safety exists, including congestion.

• Impairment/disability (a driver with an impairment or disability requires police assistance).

• Other situations where discretion would determine it was in the public interest to attend and/or investigate.

Motorists are still able to report a crash to Queensland Police, especially if someone is injured. This can be done online via the Queensland Police Service website. Remember it’s a requirement by law that drivers involved in a crash must exchange details to all parties involved.

Go loco for historic trains at festival Historic trains that used to haul cane through the streets of Nambour will be on display for the second annual Trainfest happening on July 17. The Moreton Central Sugar Mill loco Shay will be on display.

Shay was rebuilt in 1948 from two similar locos: Dulong, originally built in 1908; and Mapleton, built in 1914. Shay was retired at the end of 1959 and the council took over ownership in 2003. The train now lives at Nambour Museum where it is preserved by museum volunteers. Trainfest will run from 9am to 2pm at Nambour Museum in Mitchell Street. FACING ADVERSITY TO LEAD A LIFE WELL LIVED A Coolum Beach real estate agent and his family have continued to overcome a series of adversities, including a frightening terminal diagnosis.

Tom Leworthy is sharing his story in the hope of inspiring others to take life’s opportunities and live life to the fullest.

Growing up in a family of real estate agents, Mr Leworthy went against tradition, pursuing a different career through his early adult life.

“After finishing school, I left Coolum to join the defence force,” he says. “This decision would see me through a 20-year career in aviation.

“I spent time in various parts of Australia, before moving to New Zealand,

then eventually onto the Middle East where I spent the next five years as an advisor to the Omani and UAE [United Arab Emirates] military.”

It was in 2015 while living in Abu Dhabi with his now-wife Siobhan that Mr Leworthy found three large lumps under his left arm.

“After a CT scan and an ultrasound biopsy of the lumps, I was diagnosed with stage-three metastatic melanoma,” he says.

“Siobhan was 33 weeks pregnant with our first child at the time, so we jumped on a plane back to Australia so I could immediately start to receive treatment just two days after the birth of our daughter Remi.

“Within 12 months, the melanoma had spread to my lungs and bowel and the

adverse effects of the immunotherapy had given me type one diabetes.

“At this point, my lymph nodes and right lung were partially resected, and I was given a terminal diagnosis with a 12-month life expectancy. I was 36 years old.”

The couple decided to have their dream wedding before Mr Leworthy was offered a new intensive cell-targeted clinical trial drug.

“Amazingly, to the surprise of everyone including my oncologist, my three-month scans showed no evidence of disease … an unbelievable result.”

The couple decided to complete their family with their youngest daughter Rae born nine months later – until tragedy struck again. “The next six months was a battle for Siobhan as various complications arose after the birth of Rae. “Siobhan was diagnosed with a uterine trophoblastic tumour, a rare form of cancer that can arise after pregnancy.

“Siobhan was then forced to have a full hysterectomy at just 29 years of age.”

Overcoming their battles, the couple has been cancer free for three years, with Mr Leworthy returning to real estate and Mrs Leworthy establishing her own law firm, Pathway Legal.

“During all of this, Siobhan and I continued to work and compete in marathons and triathlons in a bid to not let the cancer take over our lives.”

Maleny Visitors Information Centre and Youth MP Connor Keogh are among a group of winners from the Glass House electorate in the latest round of Local Heroes Grants for 2021.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell says each year, up to four grants of $250 are available for individuals or groups in the electorate, four times a year.

“Many community groups are desperately underfunded and rely on volunteers and fundraising to keep afloat,” Mr Powell says.

“I created these grants to help those

OUR MONEY TRAIL’S SICK PATHWAY Our economy is fuelled in large part by people’s misfortune and weaknesses.

The cold, hard truth was revealed in the recently-released Federal Government 2021 Intergenerational Report. While the report is the kind of reading likely to make one’s head hurt, in the sea of stats and formulas is an economic picture of Australia over the next 40 years.

It paints a landscape set to change as much as Sunshine Coast skies do in winter.

For starters, Treasury projects that there will be almost 40 million people in Australia by then. A quarter of the population will be over 65 and the proportionate number of people of working age (and paying income tax) will fall by a third.

Other streams of government money are now running at a trickle, and pointy heads are being scratched about which corner of the kingdom to raid in order to refill the pot. Governments, it seems, have become hooked on our bad habits, profiting big time from our smoking, drinking and driving petrol-fuelled cars.

They cash in on it. They count on it.

But we are kicking the habits, which is great for us but bad for them. Why do

governments tax these items? Because that is where the money is: we used to be reliably addicted. The Commonwealth harvested an estimated $15 billion a couple of years ago in tobacco tax – more than from taxes on superannuation, petrol or fringe benefits. But smoking is increasingly on the nose, falling by more than 10 per cent each of the past two years. That is more than a billion dollars less each year in the government’s bank account. That darned plain packaging did what it was meant to do, which must be bittersweet for Treasury. Stats show we are boozing less overall too, somewhat evaporating the alcohol tax stream.

That the government coffers were healthier because of our sicknesses seems unconscionable.

Fuel – the third musketeer of Australia’s main excise bases – is now a less reliable earner too. The Australian Bureau of Statistics last week showed there are 23,000 electric vehicles registered, a leap of 62.3 per cent on the previous year. Given major manufacturers will phase out making vehicles with internal combustion engines, the income stream from fuel excise is going to dry up too.

So how will governments fill their black hole?

It is expected that ordinary taxpayers will have to step up, perhaps with more income taxes, a road user tax and a higher GST. At least governments still have gambling taxes they can rely on.

Queenslanders lost about $2.5 billion in poker machines alone in the year before COVID hit and the State Government takes up to a third of that in tax.

Talk about feasting on misery. Think about that as you fill in your tax return.

Where is the carrot to encourage people to get fully vaccinated? Under current federal and state government restrictions, fully vaccinated people are simply herded into a mass lockdown with all the same restrictions being applied to them as to those who have not been vaccinated. No wonder people are getting confused and are quite possibly over all the forever changing information that is being thrown at us.

Governments need to reward people for taking the two jabs, which hopefully will encourage other folks to follow as the vaccine supply rate becomes more reliable.

Regarding Ashley’s comments this week, my take is that I agree with him wholeheartedly... to a point! Just like him, I’m an ordinary guy, just not as high-profile, mind you. However, my point is that in every barrel of rotten apples there’s a good one or two.

Now, I’m no card-carrying Liberal, so, as an example let’s take our man in Fisher – in my view a straight-shooter from any perspective. And, yes Ash, he sends out the flyers, etc. just like the others who your comments are aimed at but his intentions are not from a self-serving motive.

saw a news story last week about a guy who got arrested not once, but twice, for playing his guitar in his driveway. I am not sure whether he was arrested for loud amplified music or the fact that he was only wearing his underpants. Now, he and his brother were quoted as saying that the arrest was an unlawful act and in fact, his neighbours loved his weekly performance in his driveway and it was a way of giving back.

At the time of writing he had 1100 signatures on a petition agreeing with him, but he was also waiting for his court appearance and I have my fingers crossed he will wear big boy pants to that?

Why am I writing about this you may well ask. It’s not the fact that old mate bangs out heavy metal original tunes in his Bonds, but the fact that 1100 hundred people support him and admonish the thin blue line. It is just another example of the attitude in this country to authorities and probably why we will struggle to get vaccinated anytime soon, as everyone challenges everything on a daily basis.

Let’s take Bali as an example – a developing country that will be vaccinated

way before us for a few reasons. They understand how important their tourism is.

There is little or no welfare to fall back on and if authorities tell them to do something a high percentage comply. No JobKeeper or JobSeeker means no food on the table.

Basically, the polar opposite to this country.

Our police are bogged down with red tape and challenges from every angle of what they can and can’t do. Instead of sorting our youth crime and domestic violence pandemic, they are arresting people in underpants or worse, policing those who won’t wear masks, those who have exemptions but do not have to actually produce a piece of paper to confirm it as it is an invasion of human rights. Then there are the barbecues with over 20 people they have to control. What has our country become?

But I have to agree it isn’t all the fault of Joe or Joanne Citizen; some dodgy politicians have probably helped fester the lack of confidence in authority. Anyway I think I might go and sit in my driveway in my jocks and sing True Blue or Land Down Undies I mean Under – but I am not really sure we are that country anymore.

re you a snapper or a purist when it comes to cooking and eating spaghetti? I snap my sticks of pasta in two before they go into the pot, because I have kids and otherwise, I would have spaghetti sauce spattered from one end of the dinner table to the other. It is just easier to when it comes to cramming the carb goodness into the saucepan. Angel hair? Yep, I break it in half. Fettuccine? Yep, split that sucker.

Linguine? Lever that baby in two! Snap!

Spaghetti is a hearty and dependable dish for the soul, but is there a messier dish to eat? A video is doing the rounds on TikTok showing a shocked Italian boyfriend when her girlfriend snaps the pasta in two.

The passionate Italian fellow screams to do this to pasta is actually illegal!

Many others also believe the only way to eat spaghetti is with the strands of pasta left as one long strand. Chinese culture says it is actually bad luck to snap strands of pasta in two. Think Lady and the Tramp; now that is a cute and romantic way to share a slippery strand of pasta between two star-crossed lovers.

But life is not a Disney movie, is it? No,

not everybody gets a happy ending. If you lose your glass slipper at midnight, then you may want to slow down on the Moscow mules. My point is, we are not all afforded the romantic luxury of slurping a delicious bowl of pasta like a sexy Sophia Loren.

Most of us are in our pyjamas eating spaghetti after a big day at work and we just need to get that pasta demolished. I find a

All this talk of carbs has me feeling a little guilty for my overindulgence of late.

What’s that horrible saying about summer bodies are made in winter time? And you cannot shine like a diamond if you are not cut like a diamond. I think I am happy to continue eating pasta and drinking wine and just be a cubic zirconia.

hen Roger and Julie Buttenshaw put their Halcyon Landing home up for sale, they were delighted to sell it in two days.

Reynolds had buyers for the home as soon as it was listed. Even though the Buttenshaws’ new home at B by Halcyon won’t be ready until early next year, they are using the time and the capital gains they made to head off on an eight-

“One of the first things we did after retiring was buy an existing home at Halcyon Landing,’’ Mr Buttenshaw says.

We were travelling for about six months

of the year, every year. We did 125,000 kilometres in that motorhome.”

Mr Buttenshaw says the current booming real estate market means making the move to a new architectdesigned house at B by Halcyon was financially easy.

“The block we have chosen points north, and this time we get to have input into the customisation of the new house, and we have chosen a design with a more open plan and bigger patio.

“The fact that we don’t pay entry or exit fees, or stamp duty, makes this move economically viable for us.’’

Both agree that so far, the highlight of their past travels was a five-month journey around Australia in 2016 and 2017.

“The best part was seeing the Kimberley in Western Australia. The red dirt there is amazing as was the drive down the west coast,” he says.

“During the trip we caught up with seven other groups from Halcyon Landing at Streaky Bay, on the coastline of Western Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. That was pretty special too.”

he saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’ and a recent school staff retreat at Lutheran Services’ aged care and retirement living community, Immanuel Gardens in Buderim, put words into action.

Teachers from local school, Immanuel Lutheran College put down the whiteboard pens and books to visit Immanuel Gardens for a day of teamwork and community spirit.

From constructing and re-oiling garden benches to planting fruit trees, staff from Lutheran Services Immanuel Gardens and Immanuel Lutheran College worked together to create a vibrant outdoor space for residents to enjoy and use – a rewarding success for all involved.

Teachers also got the creativity flowing with residents at Immanuel Gardens, making colourful banners and streamers in the school sporting house colours to cheer on the students at their upcoming sports carnival this July.

Before recommending surgery to someone suffering with hip or knee osteoarthritis, I recommend exhausting all non-operative methods of treatment first. These include physiotherapy, weight management, lifestyle modification, medication and, potentially, injection therapy.

Visit a physiotherapist for range-ofmotion and strengthening exercises for managing the symptoms of joint pain.

Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is vitally important. Ask your GP to check your BMI and suggest effective methods of weight loss if necessary.

It is important to modify the activities you perform if you suffer from joint pain.

Choose low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, and cycling.

A good medication for joint pain is Panadol Osteo (or equivalent), but always check with your GP before commencing, particularly if you have liver disease. There are also injections available to help treat joint osteoarthritis. These can be discussed at the Sunshine Coast Injection Clinic.

Being educated about your condition is important. Consult an orthopaedic surgeon about the best course of treatment for you or attend one of our knee patient education seminars.

Varicose veins are common. They can be unsightly and may ache. Sometimes they cause bleeding, blood clots or skin ulcers.

Smaller varicose veins can be treated with a process called sclerotherapy.

Larger varicose veins require ablation or surgery.

Thermal ablation is a keyhole technique that heats the main superficial vein using radiofrequency energy. At the same time the varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions. The technique is undertaken as a day procedure in hospital under a light general aneasthetic.

Bandages, which are applied at the conclusion of the procedure, are removed the next day and compression stockings fitted.

Time off normal activities is usually three days. Walking is important after treatment and the stocking is worn for 10 days. Discomfort is minimal. The procedure has been used by many thousands of people Australia-wide as a way to treat unsightly, problematic varicose veins.

Each year, there’s always discussion in the community about whether or not it’s a good idea to get the annual flu vaccination.

In 2021, the discussion is further complicated by the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine, which, although unrelated, adds a new dynamic.

A seasonal virus, influenza is a widespread illness that can make people seriously ill or even kill them. Getting vaccinated yearly and good hygiene remain the safest and most effective ways to prevent flu.

The flu shot carries very few risks and has few side effects. The majority of the population tolerate the vaccine with no problem at all and getting the flu shot protects vulnerable groups, including older adults and children, from severe illness. Being vaccinated also helps protect the small percentage of the population unable to receive the shot.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation recommends receiving the flu shot before the viral season starts – usually June to September.

Your GP is best to administer the flu shot or talk with about your concerns.

Being diagnosed with cancer can come as a shock. It is common to experience a roller coaster of feelings – despair, fear, guilt and anger. For many people these feelings will begin to settle over the weeks following diagnosis and treatment, however, for a significant number of people depression and anxiety can persist.

The good news is there are evidencebased strategies that can help balance your mood and improve anxiety. For a start, recognising that your experiences are likely quite normal can help you to feel less anxious that you are not coping.

Importantly, it can be really helpful to talk honestly and openly about your thoughts and feelings. This can help you to both feel heard and understood, increase the likelihood that your support needs will be met and help you gain perspective.

If you are feeling overwhelmed and/or finding it difficult to know where to turn to gain support and skills for coping, there are a range of options and organisations, including the Cancer Council and Bloomhill Cancer Care, and there is the option of linking in with a psychologist who specialises in helping people impacted by cancer.

“There is no better way to showcase a region or location than to have people travel here,” he says. “They may come up and decide this is the perfect place to live.”

While Airbnb and holiday let property owners will be holding their breath for a positive announcement by the IOC, Mr Diesel notes that pressure on the rental market will remain and first-home buyers will feel the effect of price increases.

“We are going to see the Coast’s prices increase over time,” he says. “If you look at the sales prices, they have a direct correlation with rental properties. As house prices go up, rentals have to go up to match otherwise investors won’t be covered.”

“I think it is imperative that when the planning is put forward for these buildings, that repurposing is at the forefront of mind,” Mr Diesel says.

The planners need to work out what the complex is going to be used for such as residential, special needs or the community.

He frames his response based on his research into what some previous Games accommodation venues are being used for now.

“Whatever it is, that needs to be looked at when it is planned and repurposed immediately after the Games so that it is a valuable asset moving forward,” Mr Diesel adds. ”I think it’s a really exciting opportunity to repurpose it to something that could be a model for future Games.”

INTO THE SWING Phil Harrison took a giant step towards defending Noosa Springs’ Sunday Series championship when he shot 39 points to win this week’s stableford event and give himself a strong chance to again reach the final.

The year-long event offers weekly prizes, with the male and female golfers returning the month’s best scores qualifying for the final in December.

They will then play for a golfing holiday at Noosa Springs, complete with two nights’ accommodation, daily breakfast and two days of unlimited golf.

oung forward Trent Loiero was firmly on Craig Bellamy’s radar during the pre-season. The head coach would often mention – in both casual conversation around the club and when fronting the media – that the 20-year-old from the Sunshine Coast was a standout on the training track over the summer.

The 20-year-old from the Sunshine Coast made his NRL debut for Storm in round four this season against the Brisbane Broncos.

His impressive 18-minute stint off the bench justified Bellamy’s confidence in

him and earned him another call up in round 11 and consecutive NRL games in rounds 13 and 14.

Loiero has been part of the club’s development squad for the past two seasons and was upgraded to Storm’s NRL top 30 squad this month.

A junior with the Kawana Dolphins club, Loiero progressed to the Sunshine Coast Falcons under-18 and under-21 teams before making his Intrust Super Cup debut in 2019.

“The thing that excited me most about moving down to Melbourne initially was getting to train full-time with blokes that I

WILSON READY FOR SURFING’S OLYMPIC DEBUT Every athlete and official descending on Tokyo for the rescheduled 2020 Olympics this month is hoping everything runs as smoothly as possible.

However, several Australian surfers are secretly hoping for a fun-sized typhoon to make things interesting.

“Fingers crossed we get a bit of that,” Australian Olympic surfer Julian Wilson told the Herald.

Roughly 30 typhoons hit Japan every year, mostly from July to October, with varying degrees of severity. Wilson, of course, is hoping for something on the lower end of the scale – just big enough to ensure some good surf.

During Typhoon Hagibis, adrenaline junkies surfed some brilliant waves across Japan. Wilson, who has been named alongside Sally Fitzgibbons, Steph Gilmore and Owen Wright in Australia’s four-person team, has experienced similar conditions in Japan before.

“Typhoon season is when they do get good swells,” Wilson said. “I’ve been there in Japan maybe six times before and scored really good waves. Fingers crossed

Sunshine Coast Lightning is thrilled to return home to the Sunshine Coast to play in front of a USC Stadium home crowd in Round 11, after the Suncorp Super Netball announced an amended weekend of fixturing.

To accommodate current government and state border restrictions, Lightning will now take on GIANTS Netball on Saturday, July 17 at 3pm.

The move comes after the relaxation of border restrictions across Australia, including Queensland.

The Lightning based themselves in Melbourne over the past fortnight to ensure the competition could continue, before travelling to Perth on Friday resulting in Saturday’s win over West Coast Fever.

The Lightning are calling on all of their members and fans to come out and support the team this weekend, and help us get another win as we head towards a fifth consecutive finals’ campaign.

Game day and ticketing information for Lightning v GIANTS Netball will be available to members and fans in the coming days.

“He’s a pleasure to have at our a club – a hard worker and quick learner who is very popular among his teammates,” Ponissi says.

“Trent is also another great example of the pathways that exist with our feeder clubs in Queensland, with seven players from the Falcons alone making their NRL debuts for Storm over the past two seasons.”

“To be honest, I think there is a bit of a misconception of what is to be expected.

“It can get big. When the world tour was in that area they had to move locations – because the waves were too big – to some point breaks. It can get well overhead.”

Wilson and his teammates have accommodation next to the beach in Chiba, which is roughly 100 kilometres from Tokyo. Some competitors are two hours away.

Given surfing’s huge popularity worldwide, it has been asked what winning a medal would mean for those competing in Tokyo. Surfing has never been an Olympic sport until now. Wilson insists winning a medal would be right up there on his list of achievements.

So here are some interesting facts. More people now die from taking selfies than from shark attacks – 259 deaths from selfies in a seven-year period. The ocean is being fished out seven times faster than it can replenish itself. The sharks don’t hunt us. Most of the time they simply take a bite then move on. I remember a famous Far Side cartoon where one shark said to the other while looking at a scuba diver with an air tank on: “Don’t eat those ones, they make you fart!”

Crisp morning temperatures followed by warm winters days, are really making this winter a great catch indeed. The local rivers have really been quite busy with some solid slabs of flathead on the shallow banks and drop-offs around the dropping tides. Bigger bream have started holding in and around the pontoons, bridge pylons and rocky structures, good to see some pictures of solid 45-centimetre-plus fish from around the local area. Along the beaches with the better early morning high tides, reports of dart, flathead and even a few squire from off the rocks around the Point Cartwright headland. No reports of tailor from around Kawana Waters at this stage, better to chase them off the rocks at Kings Beach and around the mouth of the Maroochydore River at night. Offshore has been moving along quite well with plenty of the usual species being caught on the bigger tides, with snapper moving into the closer marks on the fresher mornings.
