Hello again – I’m in the hot seat for just two weeks while Candice Holznagel is on leave.

I have to say, the last two weeks have brought back memories of my first week with My Weekly Preview in July 2020. At the time, all things COVID considered, Queensland was doing well, but there remained a cautious air and a certain level of instability. Gradually life picked up, however the last two weeks have been a stark reminder of COVID’s unpredictable nature. This period has prompted the Australian Prime Minister to come back with a four-stage plan – he was able to do that because of vaccines. I had my first dose last week – definitely a couple of crook days, but after that, I was fine. Vaccines are enabling many parts of the world to open up – the good news is, if we can access vaccines, we will too.

NAIDOC Week 2021

NAIDOC 2021 Exhibition The NAIDOC 2021—Culture Remembered; Revitalised; Reactive exhibition is running until August 15 at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. The exhibition presents art, stories and cultural works around the telling of First Nations’ history and combined histories.

The works are drawn from the Sunshine Coast Art Collection and the Cultural Heritage Collection.

The Sunshine Coast is invited to celebrate and reflect on the importance of country to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community this NAIDOC week, July 4 to 11.

Sunshine Coast Libraries cards Limited edition library card designs feature artwork by local First Nations peoples that depict significant cultural places throughout our region. These limited edition library cards will be available for new members during NAIDOC Week.

his year, the theme for NAIDOC Week (July 4 to 11) is Heal Country! and calls on everyone to continue seeking greater protections for our lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is an opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This year’s theme refers to the sacred connection between Indigenous people and the land. The theme also seeks substantive institutional, structural, and

collaborative reform – something generations of Elders and communities have been advocating, marching and fighting for. Healing Country means finally resolving many outstanding injustices. It is about hearing and actioning the aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, which are the culmination of generations of consultation and discussions on a range of issues and grievances.

NAIDOC 2021 invites the nation to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia’s national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders, as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says he is pleased the council’s annual flag-raising ceremony was able to go ahead in light of the pandemic and recent lockdown, with NAIDOC Week

celebrations returned to July this year.

“NAIDOC Week is always an important time for our community to acknowledge and attribute respect to the elders past and present of our First Nations peoples,” Mayor Jamieson says.

“One of my enduring priorities since I was elected as Mayor in 2012 has been to advancing reconciliation and strengthening our collaboration with our First Nations communities across many facets of our work.

“This is one of the founding principles that underpinned our council’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2021-2022, which our council unanimously endorsed in March.

“An important part of that work has focused on developing a culturally capable workplace at council, promoting respect and valuing the skills, experience and perspectives of First Nations employees and representatives in our community.”

First Nations virtual reality at Bankfoot House, ongoing each Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–3pm First Nations at Bankfoot House is the first virtual reality (VR) experience presented by Sunshine Coast Council and Bilbie Virtual Studios. This VR experience is an integral component in telling the story of the Glass House Mountains region and combines moving image, sound and interactive design. Transporting the viewer through time, the experience is a deeply engaging way to immerse visitors in the world of First Nations people.

The cost of sport A

re we still adhering to the values that underpin our notion of sport? Do we still agree the fundamentals of sport teach us to appreciate and understand the importance of core life values: fairness, equality, inclusion and respect? Does this apply to all levels of sports?

Due to effects of COVID, we are navigating our lives from new, modified or altered frameworks. For many of us, in terms of social, emotional and financial wellbeing, the surprise and shock of having to deal with a pandemic has posed questions about the validity of many of our traditional beliefs.

As much as anything else, in consideration of the hardship COVID has caused to many Australians, questions are being raised about the ability of elite sports teams to garner exemptions to return to Australia, stage big national and international competitions and, if the last State of Origin – which drew a 52,000 audience just two days before a lockdown – was appropriate, or indeed was the reported $8 million paid to the NRL to host the second Origin game in Townsville worth the money?

If we’re not in lockdown, it’s a safe bet to say on most weekends, the fields, courts and ovals of Australia will be hosting hordes of young people. In

summer on the Coast, the ocean counts as a liquid field for ocean sports.

Our nation boasts a wide range of sports and from a young age, parents encourage their children’s participation, take on transport duties and bear the financial cost of club membership, uniforms and equipment. They do it because they believe the kids will learn about teamwork and sportsmanship, about winning and losing and keeping a cool head, no matter what the circumstances of play.

At this level, the government also supports sports for the part it plays in the population’s health and wellbeing.

On the next level, sport can bring in financial benefits.

For example, last year, the Sunshine Coast tourism industry, reeling from the effects of COVID, welcomed the Melbourne Storm players and their families to make their home at Twin Waters. Additionally, AFL’s St Kilda Football Club called Noosaville’s RACV Resort home. It was a significant boost to the industry and a vote of confidence for Queensland’s handling of the pandemic.

Additionally, the Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to building the Sunshine Coast Stadium and warm welcome contributed to the club’s choice of residence. It seemed to work out as a win-win situation.

Sport provides exercise, entertainment and a sense of community around the world, but when it comes to COVID-related restrictions in Australia, is sport getting a free pass, and is it fair to the rest of the community who are doing it tough? WORDS Gail Forrer.

In February this year, Tennis Australia went ahead with the Australian Open, with Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley telling media: “We need to do it.”

It was a contentious decision. In light of Victoria’s 111-day lockdown, it angered many people who considered it an act of hypocrisy for the grand slam to go ahead. Not only that, as hundreds of international players poured in to the country, there were still thousands of Australian citizens battling bureaucracy to get a flight home. However, on a daily basis, the stadium filled with 30,000 spectators – 50 per cent of its capacity and in line with COVID restrictions.

In May, 38 cricket players and commentators returned from India, via the Maldives, on a privately chartered flight. This 38 were above NSW’s strict cap of 3000 returned travellers. The NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian explained it was a regular occurrence to make assessments above the nominated 3000. Although they had to comply to COVID restrictions, to many of the approximately 8000 Australian citizens stuck in India, it felt like discrimination.

Back on home ground, the state of Queensland swooped on a COVID opportunity and paid the NRL a reported $8 million to host games in Townsville after Victoria went into lockdown. “This is value for money… myweeklypreview.com.au

and the benefits that it will bring into the local economy is going to be flowing,” the Queensland Premier told media.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, nearly 500,000 Australians have returned to the country, but more than 36,000 Australians remain overseas due to arrival caps. The caps are set to ensure quarantine restrictions are carefully managed, last week further COVID fears saw a reduction in the caps.

Desperation has led a group of stranded overseas Australian citizens to petition the International Court of Justice for recognition of their plight, with human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC advising his petitioners: “International law recognises the strong bond between individuals and their homeland, and no respectable government would impose travel caps to prevent, for over a year, its citizens from returning if they are prepared to do quarantine.”

In the last couple of weeks, we are again reminded of COVID’s deadly lightning strikes. There’s a lot of pain around, but vaccinations appear to be the saving grace.

When we are free from the pandemic, there will plenty of social examination – what did we learn,

Major sporting organisations have shown their solidarity with efforts to reduce the spread of the virus. For example, FIFA has teamed up with the World Health Organisation and launched a ‘Pass the message to kick out coronavirus’ campaign led by well-known football players in 13 languages, calling on people to follow five key steps to stop the spread of the disease focused on hand washing, coughing etiquette, not touching one’s face, physical distance and staying home if feeling unwell.

Other international sport for development and peace organisations have come together to support one another in solidarity during this time, for example, through periodic online community discussions to share challenges and issues.

Participants in such online dialogues have also sought to devise innovative solutions to larger social issues, for example, by identifying ways that sporting organisations can respond to problems faced by vulnerable people who normally participate in sporting programs in low-income communities but who are now unable to, given restriction to movement.

what will we forget? No doubt, the position, importance and treatment of elite sport during these times will be high on the agenda.

However, back at home on the Sunshine Coast, Mayor Mark Jamieson knows a new sporting venue is always a time for celebration as he welcomed the opening of the $6.5 million Nirimba Sports Complex to the growing Aura community.

Last week, he noted: “There are a number of elements to this project which will provide significant benefits for the residents of the suburbs in the Aura development.

“Council delivered two change rooms with a canteen for families and friends to use while watching a plethora of sports – whether it be rugby league, cricket or netball.

“There’s also a referee change room and integrated public amenities to service the sports precinct.

“Accompanying the clubhouse is a three-bay storage shed along with an expansive undercover viewing area.

The facility has been delivered in line with the requirements of the Caloundra South infrastructure agreement, which requires developer Stockland to deliver the entire open space network (sport and recreation) at no cost to the council, and include funding towards the construction of a network of 10 sports clubhouses across the development area.

Since March 2020, COVID has taken both grassroots and elite-level sports on a roller coaster ride.

It’s probably never been timelier to recall words from Nelson Mandela’s famous speech on sport: “Sport has the power to change to change the world.

It has the power to inspire; it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair; it is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.”

Chair of Sunshine Coast Falcons Ashley Robinson says he understands the government is dealing with a difficult situation, however, there should be more consistency in the rules and who they apply to.

“The really sad part is small business in particular keeps getting hammered while other decisions are made at convenient times to support the big end of town,” Mr Robinson says.

“There is no way Origin should have been on last Sunday. If it was okay to have it, then lockdown shouldn’t have happened, one way or the other.”

A Sunshine Coast primary school teacher is hoping to stimulate conversations around bullying with her latest book, The Playground Hero. “As a primary school teacher and a mum, I’ve seen a lot of bullying and I’ve also seen many acts of kindness,” Lisa Edgar says. “I wrote this book to put a spotlight on both of these topics and to hopefully give parents a tool to influence their children in a positive way.” Ms Edgar says The Playground Hero tells the story of a schoolboy named Jack who explores the hurtful feelings of being lonely, isolated and bullied. “I’m hoping the book will become a call to action for children to make a positive difference in somebody else’s life through inclusion.” The book is available at lisaedgarauthor.com.au.

This Plastic Free July, Sunshine Coast residents are encouraged to refuse single-use plastic products and adopt more sustainable and reusable behaviours. Last year, an estimated 326 million people worldwide took part in Plastic Free July. On average, participants reduced their household waste and recycling by almost five per cent, or 21 kilograms. Sunshine Coast citizen scientists can help scientists predict the probability, severity and burn area of future bushfires as part of a federally funded project led by the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC has received a $498,426 grant to deliver the new NOBURN mobile app designed to engage the public and offer the opportunity to participate in a research project. Citizen scientist can capture and upload photo evidence of fuel-loads, dryness and structure of forests to the app, where artificial intelligence tools will be used to predict potential bushfires based on the images.

$10,000 RAISED FOR SALTY SOULS LEGACY The annual Winter Solstice Swim was a success in late June, raising more than $10,000 for chosen beneficiary, Salty Souls Legacy. The swim, organised by the Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland, had competitors ranging from 14 to 78 participating in the charity event. “We had an amazing finish to the five-kilometre swim leg, where budding Olympian Bailey Armstrong from Kawana just pipped Thomas Raymond from Nudgee College by 17 seconds, both completing five kilometres in under an hour,” the club’s John Molloy says. COVID setback leads to creative

“I’m a creative technologist,” she says. “It’s basically about how can we use these incredibly emerging technologies for creative experiences to increase engagement and enjoyment. I have a background in visual art and I see the world through pictures.”

Ms Hughes describes Head Above Water as a darkly comic, unfiltered adult animated series that follows feminist mermaids and angry sirens as they lure men to their deaths to ‘devour the patriarchy’.

“Head Above Water is set it in the modern day against an underwater metropolis centred around the Department of Justice. Sirens, much like police officers, go about their days devouring society’s bad apples: misogynists, mansplainers, etc,” she says. “The show is a subversive, indecorous and contemporary episodic adult animated series, using dark comedy to explore feminist commentary under the guise of chaotically entertaining humour.”

Ms Hughes says Head Above Water is influenced by other animated productions including South Park, BoJack Horseman and Archer, along with the contemporary feminism of television shows like Broad City and Fleabag.

“A 2019 study by the University of Southern California found that only 17 per cent of “created by” or “developed by” credits were attributed to women in animated television so I am hoping backing Head Above Water could be a market opportunity for producers and funding bodies eager to bridge the gender divide in animated television,” she says.

“The show is written and created by a woman and has a female lead protagonist. In 100 animated TV series analysed within the USC study, only 25 per cent of the writers were women, while only 39 per cent of the top 100 animated series included lead or co-lead characters who were female.”

Ms Hughes’ passion for her project is evident as she discusses how what first appeared to be a major setback in her career has become a blessing.

“I think 2020 was quite a dark time for the entire world,” she says. “It was very depressing; there was a lot of unrest.

Being able to turn off and escape into this mermaid world has been a nice emotional reset and now I have this energy and passion I can pour into it.”

ermaids with mullets and leather jackets take down the patriarchy by luring men to a watery end in Jessie Hughes’ provocative novel, which, thanks to a string of unforeseen events, is now being made into an animated comedy series.

A creative technologist who grew up in Shelly Beach, Ms Hughes says a childhood immersed in the ocean no doubt planted subconscious seeds for the show. Titled Head Above Water, it has gained immediate industry interest and Ms Hughes has closed a partnership deal with Brisbane motion studio Breeder to bring her story to life on the small screen.

After studying creative industries at Queensland University of Technology, the 27-year-old was named a John Monash Scholar for 2020 and was about to embark on a Master in Design Engineering at Harvard University when the pandemic hit. “COVID-19 threw my international plans out the window but ended up serendipitously redirecting me on an entirely new path, one far more comical, creative, and closer to home,” Ms Hughes says.

“It was beautiful to reconnect with my roots and it was when I moved back to the Coast, the idea for this show came about. My whole life had crumbled and I got a job at The Pocket Espresso Bar at Moffat Beach. I was serving a customer and she’d just come out of the water. She had long wet hair and was in a bikini and looked like a mermaid. That day they were raising money for Mullets for Mental Health.

I looked at this girl and got an idea of a mermaid with a

mullet. I’m an artist so I thought it would just be a picture, but every single day this picture came back. When an idea sticks, it just sticks. Her personality grew, her story grew and there were a lot of massive changes happening in my life that came through her character.”

Ms Hughes received a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant of $5000 to develop the concept and has recently applied for another RADF grant of $10,000 to further develop it.

“A lot of work goes into all the beautiful elements that make animation as magical as it is,” she says. “We have so much talent in Australia and I think that is what COVID has highlighted for the screen industry, as many of them have had to come home [from working overseas], so I’m excited to collaborate with all these talented people going forward.”

Ms Hughes is driven by a desire to apply creativity to technology and works in design strategy for an agency in Brisbane. Her work involves consulting with emerging technology developers.

One way they do this is by supplying each retail store with essentially the same mattress, but with different labels (brand names) and prices.

On top of that, they refuse to tell you exactly what’s inside the mattress so you don’t actually know what you’re getting. And to further confuse you, they make up fancy terminology to make their components seem better.

What’s In A Mattress?

Springs Unless a mattress is made entirely of foam or latex, it will contain a core of springs. These springs are made by a handful of companies (usually in China) and imported into Australia flattened.

Bonnel Springs are made from a cylindrical coil of wire attached between guide wires and hoops on the top and bottom. These springs are tried and tested. And they are affordable. But because they are made of continuous wire, they can easily transfer movement across the bed.

Pocket Springs are also imported into Australia flattened.

They are wrapped individually in cylinders of fabric and work independently of each other which minimises partner disturbance. Pocket Springs are slightly more expensive than Bonnel Springs but well worth it.

Side Supports Cheap Bonnel Spring mattress don’t have any side supports.

More expensive ones have a single butterfly side support (looks like half a butterfly). Here at Simply Beds we use double butterfly side supports (looks like a full butterfly) so the edge of the bed remains firm when you sit on it.

Cheaper Pocket Spring mattresses either have no side supports or use a simple metal hoop at the top and bottom.

The best way to give side support is to encase the springs in a high quality density foam box. That’s what we do here at Simply Beds.

Comfort Layers

This refers to the foam / latex layers that sit on the springs.

This is a major part of the mattress and makes a big difference to the comfort, longevity and cost.

Not all foams are the same quality. Foam is graded by density (or weight) and softness. The higher the density (heavier) the longer the foam will last.

Density has nothing to do with softness. You can get high density foam (heavy foam) in soft, medium, and firm. The problem is, most retailers won’t tell you the density of the foam in each mattress (most probably don’t even know).

Memory or Gel Foam is also sometimes used as a comfort layer. Both foams have slow re-lease qualities which enable them to hug your body and relieve pressure points. But this can make them warmer to sleep on. Gel Foam is injected with a special substance to increase air circulation and keep your mattress cooler.

Latex can also be used as a comfort layer. Like foam, not all latex is the same. Genuine latex is highly elastic and will last for many years. Synthetic and hybrid latex becomes brittle over time.

The top comfort layer is in the quilting. Beds with a cloudlike feel usually have a lot of polyester in the quilting. While this may be lovely at first, it will quickly flatten (within weeks). To prevent this we include foam in our quilting.

Ask about the display mattresses we are selling for even less than our usual low whole-sale prices.

Pillow top This is usually an extra layer/s of foam attached to one side of the mattress. While this may add to the comfort of a mattress, depending on the density of the foam, it will contour to your body over time.

We use high quality (i.e. high density) foam to minimise this. Pillowtop mattresses are usually single-sided (non flip) which effectively halves their life (although many of our mattresses are still guaranteed for 10 years).

Festival a nutty idea

It’s enough to make any Nutella lover swoon – a festival dedicated to this nutty spread, and it’s happening on the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

utella lovers rejoice. A festival dedicated entirely to the decadently delicious and nutty treat is coming to the Sunshine Coast.

The chocolate and hazelnut spread will be the focus of the 12-hour festival as food stalls gear up to serve more than 40 sweet and savoury dishes at NightQuarter on July 10.

NightQuarter’s Michelle Christoe says the response so far has been incredible with everything from Nutellafilled donuts to Nutella sticky fried rice on offer.

“We’ve got Nutella sundaes, Nutella waffles, Nutella dim sims, Nutella sticky fried rice, Nutella-marinated meats, Nutella burgers, Nutella and marshmallow toasties, deep-fried Nutella, the list goes on,” Ms Christoe says.

“The response has been just phenomenal and every day we’ve got people engaging on our socials.

“It’s definitely something that everyone is going to enjoy. There are just so many things that people who love eating Nutella are going to love.

“It’s also a chance for stall holders to be a bit creative.”

The event will include Nutella-themed entertainment, such as Nutella jar juggling, as well as live music and a fire

show. This festival will also kick of the first event as part of NightQuarter’s new passport initiative.

“We are doing a passport promotion, so the idea is you can’t go overseas but we are bringing overseas to you,” Ms Christoe says.

“Nutella is the start of this and over the next six months we have a range of community-based events.”

International-inspired events will include Oktoberfest, Island Night, a New Orleans Festival, Full Moon Festival and more.

“If visitors get eight of the community events stamped on their passport upon entry, then they get a free golden ticket to attend any concert at NightQuarter of their choice.”

Ms Christoe says the continuing pandemic, lockdowns and border closures have been difficult for the venue, which opened in November last year.

“I’ve cancelled three main tours and functions for the next couple of weeks and had to reschedule some bands two or three times.”

CREATING A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE AS WE AGE The way we plan our accommodation and urban centres has to change, says one place-making expert, who will soon be heading to the Sunshine Coast for a Ageing in Place conference. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

W

ith 21 per cent of the Sunshine Coast’s population aged above 65, experts are looking at how to integrate living and urban needs in the region to better reflect how everyone ages differently.

With people living longer, the ageing populating is set to steadily increase and with that, the expectations of how residents live their older lives are changing.

The University of the Sunshine Coast will host an Ageing in Place conference on July 20 to address key issues, question the fundamentals and find new ways to meet the challenges of the ageing population.

Urbanist and place maker Kate Meyrick will be one of seven speakers on the day.

She believes there is no one-size-fits-all model to ageing.

Ms Meyrick was inspired to understand the needs of ageing Australians based on her own parents’ experience when looking for a retirement community.

“It piqued my interest that we as younger Australians make a set of assumptions when we are younger around

“We need to start expanding our horizons and thinking about how we design for older adults and enable older adults to have the same kind of choice we expect when we are younger.

“If you said to a younger Australian that they had choice A, B or C for living

accommodation they would go out and find something else they wanted. Yet we feel it’s okay to say to an older adult there is option A, option B, option C and there is not a lot in between.

“When I started to think about how do we need to change cities and how do we need to change the design of neighbourhoods and how do we need to think about the housing needs for older adults, it became really clear that maybe something a bit more granular was needed.”

Ms Meyrick has spent 30 years working around the world and Australia in placemaking across greenfield and urban regional projects. She says a region such as the Sunshine Coast must look more closely at urban and residential choices to cater for different rates of ageing. “It’s incredibly important that any community, especially one like the Sunshine Coast that is growing as fast as it is, is embracing its older adults.

“What we are trying to bring together here is a focus about what a positive ageing experience and process looks like, and that it is collectively shared between industry,

government and the community.

“We have to recognise the Sunshine Coast is not the easiest community to move around. If we are going to have an ageing population here on the Coast, we need to make sure [residents] are able to move around freely and not depend on the car.”

Ms Meyrick says the other side to ageing is thinking about the living environments and homes older residents need or want to live in. “We need to look at how do we enable a more distributed level of assisted living and an environment that meets their needs.

“There are a lot of things that we don’t consciously think through that are outside an aged-care environment.

“What I am really encouraging is that we have conversations now that will ensure the kind of quality of life and urban experience we hope are available for us.”

C

reating a safer, secure future for our community remains sharply in focus with Sunshine Coast Council endorsing its $816 million budget for 2021/22.

The budget continues to support the region’s recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 by investing $268 million in job-creating local infrastructure projects, supporting pensioners through increased concessions and increasing spending on frontline services.

It includes increased spending on frontline services such as maintaining parks and gardens, community facilities and sporting precincts and providing health and wellbeing programs, which help more people more often.

Thanks to Council’s track record of disciplined financial management, we entered the last year in a strong financial position with a $5 million Disaster Rehabilitation Reserve. This

reserve enabled Council to provide every ratepayer a one-off $35 COVID rebate last year.

In line with Council’s role as guardian for the wellbeing of the community, the $5 million Disaster Rehabilitation Reserve will be re-established, which will be set aside to aid in the recovery from a future major disaster.

Re-establishing this reserve and increasing on-the-ground services will be funded by removing the five per cent discount for on-time rates payment.

The majority of ratepayers will benefit from no increase to the minimum general rate. All pensioners will benefit from a 14 per cent increase to their pensioner rate concession.

The majority of levies will stay the same – with the exception of the Environment Levy, which will increase by $4 to $80 with 100 per cent of the increase allocated to enhancing our

response to invasive and destructive weeds.

Due to increased contractor expenses, the cost to collect a standard 240-litre domestic wheelie bin will increase by $7.70.

Council is also investing $268 million in job-creating local infrastructure projects, forecast to generate over $400 million in benefit for the regional economy and support more than 1300 jobs.

Council has kept a clear eye on the bottom line to restore the budget to surplus and, most importantly, the community’s and economy’s recovery has been prioritised in the wake of the greatest challenge they have faced in a century. Council is focused on building confidence across the Sunshine Coast to ensure it not only recovers, but will be even stronger than before.

The Keeper Project launches in Coolum on Saturday, 24 July, offering playful opportunities for the community to experience live public art unfolding.

The six-month project involves 10 Coolum-based artists who will work in the temporary role of The Keeper, as observer, explorer and maker. The Keepers are archaeologists of local stories. Intrigued?

FROM THE MAYOR As NAIDOC Week draws to an end on 11 July, I thought it timely to discuss this year’s theme – Heal Country!

NAIDOC Week is always an important time for our community to pay tribute to the Elders past and present of the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara First Nations peoples.

Since I was first elected as Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council in 2012, I have placed a high priority on our Council advancing reconciliation and strengthening our collaboration with our First Nations communities across many facets of our work.

In March this year, I was proud to be part of leading our Council in its unanimous endorsement of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2021-2022.

An important part of that plan is focused on developing a culturally capable workplace at council, and promoting respect and valuing the skills, experience and perspectives of First Nations employees and representatives in our community.

I would like to encourage everyone to pause and reflect on the ways that First Nations culture, languages and knowledge plays a part in our past, present and future.

SHARING SHILO’S STORY A Mapleton family’s dog has inspired a local author to create a delightful children’s book. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

new children’s picture book is celebrating the story of a Mapleton family and their shy “post office pup”.

The Dowdle family has owned the post office since 2008, and their cocker spaniel Shilo, who sits snuggled behind

the counter watching the world go by, has become the inspiration for local author Marg Gibbs’ latest story, The Post Office Pup. Yvonne Dowdle runs the 72-year-old post office, working alongside her mother and brother, Elizabeth and David Buckley.

Mrs Dowdle has five children, and her youngest Xanthia was born just two weeks after the family took over 13 years ago.

“I knew the family when their five children came to my kid’s book club after school to read and share stories,” Mrs Gibbs says.

“Because I am a Mapleton resident and avid letter writer, I visit the post office frequently to do my banking, send parcels and write letters to my grandchildren.

“Delivering, redirecting, banking, loading trucks and so on, the jobs are many for this super-busy family.

“Rather than Shilo being well known around the community, he is almost the opposite,” Mrs Gibbs adds.

“Hidden, secretive and asleep in his cosy blanket near David behind the counter, he is a beloved pet.

“I approached Yvonne and her mum Elizabeth to write a story about Shilo.

They loved the idea.”

Mrs Gibbs, a former secondary teacher, spent time at the family home learning about 11-year-old Shilo and watching him energetically run around the backyard chasing bugs and insects.

“He has his sleeping routine and

watches everything from behind the counter in the post office, then he loves running around the vegetable garden at home and catching bugs.”

With playful illustrations by Western Australia’s Alicia Rogerson, the book follows Shilo as he smells the mail daily, waiting for what surprise will arrive.

“Every day Shilo waits patiently for a surprise to arrive, the mail van comes and Shilo sniffs around waiting for something for him, but nothing comes to him.”

Mrs Gibbs, who has lived in Mapleton for 10 years, began writing seriously after her own children were born. She has seven children’s and one adult novel to her name.

“My happy place is putting a story on a page,” she says.

“Writing the story for children about a local village like Mapleton brings more social connection and conversation.

“It’s amazing how many dogs come for walks and stop with their owners to chat at the post office. They come in on leads, in strollers and in arms. Dogs and pets enable intimacy, companionship and questions.”

“Our PJ and sock drive helps ensure that some of the disadvantaged children in our surrounding suburbs will have some cosy warm pyjamas to sleep in during the colder winter months,” kindergarten director Marianna ‘Muddy’ van der Zypp says.

Cr Rick Baberowski Division one As you may have heard, Sunshine Coast Council announced the annual budget late last month, with $816 million set to be invested in a diverse and valuable mix of projects with the important aim to create a safer, secure future across the region.

Budget highlights for division one include a new $5.5 million extension to the landfill site at Bells Creek, start of detailed design for a significant two-lane upgrade to Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains and signage and trail upgrades along the Glass House Mountains Regional Trail.

In addition, council will spend more than $1.3 million continuing to upgrade roads across division one and we’re also building on the great progress we’ve made

COOLUM ART PROJECT State government funding is set to help launch a new arts project at Coolum Beach. As part of the Queensland Arts Showcase Program, performing arts group Red Chair will receive $49,394 to develop The Keeper Activation. The participatory public art project will engage 11 Queensland artists and deliver arts engagement with 1200 locals and visitors. The Queensland Arts Showcase Program was redesigned in 2020 to include a strong focus on supporting social outcomes in communities, stabilising arts companies and driving employment in the creatives industries.

BUDERIM NURSE REFLECTS ON 50 YEARS OF CARE

A

fter 50 years of tending to patients across Australia, Buderim Private Hospital nurse Robyn Arthur is retiring.

During her career Mrs Arthur has helped birth babies, nursed sick children, and looked after critically ill intensive care patients, patients recovering from surgery and those with complex medical

conditions. Born in Kingaroy, she knew from the age of three that she was going to become a nurse and her mother would often give her bandaids to patch up the injuries of her siblings.

Mrs Arthur began nursing at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane at age 17 and graduated from her nursing training in 1975. Later in her career, she completed

midwifery training and additional degrees in nursing and education and spent 32 years in Western Australia and the past 12 at Buderim Private Hospital.

Mrs Arthur says she will miss caring for her patients, being part of the hospital team and mentoring newly graduated nurses.

“It is beautiful to see the blossoming of young nurses starting out in their career, and personally understanding the rewards they will reap over the decades to come,” she says.

SAVING FROG SPECIES Caloundra Chamber of Commerce is delivering a project to help save a vulnerable frog species in Baringa.

Acting CEO Brady Sullivan says cane toads have been identified as one of the key factors behind the declining population of the rare and vulnerable wallum sedge frog species found in the bushland of Baringa.

“A rapidly multiplying population of cane toads have been interrupting the breeding cycle of the vulnerable acid frog in the Aura development of Baringa,” he says. “While cane toad eradication is not in the usual remit of services the chamber provides, we felt that our local business relationships put us in a good position to deliver this environmental outcome.”

Bufo tab baits, a humane and effective method developed by the University of Queensland, will be used to target tadpoles.

“We have engaged AWEC environmental consultants to complete the project, which involves installing and monitoring cane toad tadpole traps throughout significant frog habitat areas in the Aura development area,” Mr Sullivan says.

This project was made possible by a $20,000 grant from the federal government through the Communities Environment Program.

Dance group’s generous community donation Suncoast Social Dancers recently made a $1000 donation to Sunshine Linus after reading about the group in the May 6 edition of My Weekly Preview. Suncoast Social Dancers vice president Pam Minary and her 91-year-old husband Lewis, who still dances every week, are always on the lookout for local groups to support and brought the work of Sunshine Linus to the attention of the dancers, who raised the $1000. The couple recently visited Sunshine Linus president Kaye Nightingale, seeing the items the group makes and where they are donated.

Inaugural art event The Passion on the Passage Art Group (POP Group) is a small group of artists from around Caloundra. Its 12 members will present the inaugural exhibition and sale event, The Pelican Collection 2021, from July 24 to 27 at Pelican Waters Resort, Mahogany Drive, Pelican Waters. The collection includes inspiring creations in watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel and mixed media, from traditional, to contemporary, impressionism, to semi-abstract and abstract. The exhibition is open from 10am to 3.30pm daily.

Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific presents Opera in the Hangar on August 28. Opera in the Underground is a regular visitor to the Sunshine Coast, and this will be a fun-filled event with bubbles and paella on arrival and a licensed bar available, plus other sweet delights during interval.

ARTIST TO HOST FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION An Australian-based Dutch-born artist is set to host her first solo exhibition this

month after six years of dedicated study, residencies and professional development programs.

Mieke van den Berg’s exhibition In-Between: [Re]Winding Life’s Thread will open at Nambour’s Old Ambulance Station on July 17.

“I currently explore cultural separation through complex sculpture, expanded installation and performance,” she says.

“Through a matrilineal feminist lens, I address the themes of displacement, memory and trauma.

“In-Between: [Re]Winding Life’s Thread uses the chair as a reminder of the absence of human presence.

“By dramatically displacing and repositioning objects and yarn from its domestic context, the installations, sculptures and performances aim to destabilise space, object and the body’s perception in time and place.

In 2020 Ms van den Berg was an excellence award winner of the Local Artist – Local Content Art Prize at Caloundra Regional Gallery and a finalist in Lyn McCrea memorial drawing prize 2020.

“In 2019 I was an artist in residence at Draw to Perform, Brighton in the UK.” The exhibition runs until August 21.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE The pre-schooler was a screaming, sweaty mess – all red face and flailing limbs – as she threw herself down on the footpath.

Her mother was at the end of her tether. No treat for you, she said. Don’t be naughty.

And STOP SCREAMING, yelling at a volume far higher than that of her offspring.

Sometimes irony can be aching.

The march for peace where passions boil over into violence. A protest against local development that includes placards perched on high-rise balconies. Snapping and sniping at a person for being rude.

So often, an attempt to put out fire involves the application of gasoline. New Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce recently brought two women into his front bench after saying there needed to be more (or at least some) women at the forefront of the party.

He quickly added they were not appointed because they were women. Of course not.

In trying to correct one behaviour, that action is repeated, if only in another way. In the US last month, Chicago’s mayor marked her second anniversary as the city’s first female Black and openly gay leader by granting one-on-one interviews only to POC reporters – people of colour.

The US federal court is reviewing a $4-billion program to provide debt relief to struggling farmers, but only if they are from socially disadvantaged racial minorities.

The court is concerned about the prejudice against those farmers who are both poor and white.

Discrimination is not undone by finding a fresh target and pulling the focus in on it for inequitable treatment.

Purposely only considering a woman for a role is discriminatory towards men.

Never mind that the motivation is to correct a gender imbalance – blokes not being considered at all is just another version of unfair. But it is often legal. Under Australia’s Human Rights Act, there is wriggle room for pensioners to be offered discounts for haircuts. There are allowances for womenonly gyms and men-only clubs. Other federal discrimination laws allow special measures to be taken to improve equality of opportunity for people with particular attributes. It calls it positive discrimination or affirmative action. But isn’t the result just the same thing with the tables turned?

Surely who is best for the job, who most needs the help, modelling the conduct you seek, treating all people fairly just because they are people (with gender, race, sexual orientation, age secondary considerations) is preferable.

Screaming across the rooftops in an effort to quell a neighbour’s noise does nothing to bring quiet. Environmental festivals nearly always leave litter and crushed flora in their wake.

Martin Luther King said it well: Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Fighting fire with fire only leaves everyone burnt.

A

t the time of writing, I have a real problem with the inconsistencies of the people in charge. One is in sport and the other, our State.

This might seem strange coming from a Queenslander, but that wonderful win by Queensland’s Women’s Origin side held at the super Sunshine Coast Stadium had two flaws: the weather and the inconsistent decisions of the people in charge of the game. A penalty on full-time, allowing a goal to take the win for the Maroons sounds great, but in my view the people in charge had been letting ruck infringements of a similar nature go all night until the 79th minute, which was inconsistent.

COVID rules in this state are put in place to protect us and I understand that it is not a perfect science, but by all reports, health authorities knew there was an alleged super-spreader loose on Saturday June 26, the day before Origin 2, which went ahead Sunday night with about 52,000 of the government’s best friends at Suncorp.

Health protocols were in place, which appeared to mean, put a mask on when you arrive and then take it off as soon as you sit down and have a great night, see

you after the game.

On Monday, our leaders announced hospitality venues were back to having masks, sitting at all times, no dancing and one human every four square metres until July 14. In the same breath, they announced a Rugby Test; Australia versus France on July 7 to help our struggling tourism and hospitality industry.

Wonderful, except everyone will be restricted. Or is COVID banned from Suncorp Stadium?

On Tuesday, we got plunged into a three-day lockdown. Inconsistent is the word on my lips, a bit like when they opened the Townsville Stadium back at the start of COVID and the next couple of days brought in restrictions. The AFL Grand Final at the Gabba – apparently it’s very safe? Origin 1 in Townsville this year, brought in more seats to fill the stadium.

I understand we need to be protected, but at least be consistent. Although making the good doctor the next governor is probably the most consistent thing I have seen with this State Government, apart from the Blue Boys – they are pretty bloody consistent as well.

ipping off your mask when you get in your car is like taking off your bra when you walk in the front door. Am I right?

How are you coping with the mask wearing? Pesky little accessories aren’t they? Between trying to breathe and trying not to get your glasses fogged up, it is quite the task to don a mask.

There are quite a few similarities between wearing a mask and wearing a bra. Finding one that fits is akin to being granted a miracle in life. They are too big or too little or the straps are too loose. We need to wear both a bra and a mask, or it all comes crashing down. A mask and a bra hold things together.

Some clever women are wearing bras as actual masks. I am not endorsing this, as some of us would be at risk of covering our entire heads with bountiful bra cup sizes. Personally, I have been on the search for a boring plain black mask. I am yet to find my Holy Grail of masks, but I have plenty of the surgical ones stuffed in my glove box and handbag.

God bless my handbag, it is a portable emergency kit, with everything from kids’

toys to cough lollies stashed in it on any given day. Admittedly, my back suffers as my bag weighs 10 kilograms or so, but this is the price I pay for being an unsung superhero in my household. Not all superheroes wear capes.

The kids need tissues? Check Mum’s bag. Scissors? Yep, in the bag. Makeup, keys, bananas, pawpaw ointment, felt

So too is a phone charger, ear buds, a water bottle, 12 hair ties and some old sultana. My husband on the other hand seems to battle through life with just keys, a keycard and sunglasses. I am not quite sure who is the silly one out of the two of us in this situation.

Under the new Superannuation Guarantee obligation changes, we will see employers increasing the rate of superannuation contributions to 10 per cent on all employee ordinary times earnings when; • An employee is paid $450 or more before tax in a month and is; • Over 18 years, or

• Under 18 years and works over 30 hours a week.

Payments of superannuation must be paid through a clearing house no later than 28 days after the end of each quarter. Penalties for not making these payments on time include interest accruals, ATO imposed penalties and the loss of a tax deduction for the full payment.

Other changes coming into effect for all businesses with employees is Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting. This is now compulsory for all employers, including micro businesses and where the employees are closely held.

Overseas assets and divorce In the event of divorce, does my spouse have to include their assets located outside Australia? In short, yes. Assets such as land, a dwelling, bank accounts, shares and other business interests held overseas can be treated like any other asset in a divorce, and are relevant to determining adjustment of matrimonial property under Australian law.

When identifying all assets, the duty of disclosure, applicable to all parties, demands full and frank disclosure of assets owned and controlled, including those outside Australia. A failure to disclose has serious consequences and may result in the later re-opening of matters if subsequent evidence of the failure materialises.

Assets located overseas may be identified as property within the pool for adjustment or as a financial resource, also relevant to adjustment. The Court may order a party to deal with an overseas asset in a particular way, however, due to the complexities that can arise enforcing orders in a foreign country, the Court will often consider making an adjustment with respect to assets in Australia having regard to the overseas assets, but without altering their ownership.

Australian Court orders can be registered in certain countries, meaning they then have the same effect and ability to be enforced as an order made in that county.

Export market development grants – are you ready?

Changes have recently been announced to the EMDG scheme. Under the current scheme, eligible applicants can receive reimbursement grants between $5000 and $150,000 per annum for up to eight years with applications due November 30, 2021.

The ‘new’ scheme applies from July 1, 2021 and is an eligibility-based grant program that requires an upfront application. Key changes include: • eligible exporters must have annual income <$20 million (down from $50 million); • application requires submission of an export marketing plan including eligible export budgeted expenditure; • grant amounts capped based on your export ‘tiers’:

Exporters planning to apply for EMDG grants for the year ending June 30, 2022 must lodge applications by November 30, 2021, which for some exporters will require two grant submissions by this date.

This issue recently faced the Queensland Supreme Court for determination.

Mr Graham died in 2016.

His Will gifted half of his sizable estate to the Stroke Association of Queensland (SAQ).

Unfortunately, between the date on which Mr Graham died and when the gift was to be paid, the SAQ had ceased to exist.

Other ‘stroke’ charities, being the National Stroke Foundation Ltd (NSF), Synapse Australia Ltd (SAL) and the Stroke Recovery Trial Fund (SRTF), were informed of the failed gift and sought a share of the benefit.

The Court had a responsibility to give effect to the intentions of Mr Graham and apply the gift to a scheme closest to his intentions.

T

he Sunshine Coast is in the top three destinations for people moving away from the cities to regional Queensland and regional New South Wales, the recently published Regional Movers Index reports.

The Coast has recorded its largest growth in migration from capital cities compared with the other four top LGAs. “Migration to the Sunshine Coast grew by 24 per cent in the March 2021 quarter, and by 14 per cent over the year,” the report states.

The top five LGAs are the Gold Coast (11 per cent), the Sunshine Coast (six per cent), Greater Geelong (four per cent), Wollongong (three per cent) and Newcastle (two per cent).

The Regional Movers Index report, prepared by the Regional Institute of Australia and the Commonwealth Bank, shows that the movement of people out of the capital cities in the June 2020 quarter declined by 11 per cent. “Since then, the trend has been a growing outflow of people from capital cities to regional areas,” the report states.

Between the March 2020 quarter and

Importantly, the report finds there is an increase in net migration into regional areas as regional residents are remaining in place.

“These dynamics have driven the net regional migration index in the latest quarter to be 66 per cent higher than a year earlier,” the report concludes.

As Australians try to come to terms with restricted lifestyle choices as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns, the situation may prove the stick that is needed to get more city-dwellers moving out to regional areas.

University of the Sunshine Coast lecturer in psychology, Dr Prudence Millear, who is currently researching why people are moving to the Coast, expects the Coast inflow numbers will continue.

“If you are going to be stuck in a shoebox you might as well be stuck in shoebox next to the Coast,” she says.

Dr Prudence Millear “It’s (the current shutdowns) likely to make the Coast more attractive, although I think what is going to balance that is the lack of housing stock.”

Still, for people stuck in cold Melbourne or Sydney, she says the idea of living in Queensland’s glorious winter weather and Coast lifestyle may seem like the perfect choice.

A multimillion-dollar new facility praised by local sports groups has opened and is set to play a key role for sport within the growing Aura community in the future.

The $6.5-million Nirimba Sports Complex at Aura, in Caloundra South, was opened by Sunshine Coast Council and Stockland recently.

The last-placed Vixens astonishingly clawed back from an 8-goal deficit in the fourth quarter for a confidence-boosting win at John Cain Arena.

At the heart of it was Kaylia Stanton, the shooter who had previously been battling for a starting spot but showed enormous courage throughout the game against the Lightning’s international defenders.

Ms Stanton shot 18 goals, including a long-range super shot deep in the final term when the game was on the line.

The narrative was set to hang on a masterful performance from the Lightning’s Steph Wood before the Vixens’ fightback.

Ms Wood started at goal attack and featured in three positions on her way to 15 goals and 27 feeds.

ne of the world’s most decorated netballers, former Sunshine Coast Lightning star and Silver Ferns captain Laura Langman, has taken on the role of manager of the Queensland hub of NETFIT Netball.

Since retiring from the Sunshine Coast Lightning in 2020, Ms Langman has continued to work as an accountant with a local firm but was keen to stay involved

very latest tools and techniques to improve both on and off the court.

“The program includes weekly fitness videos, fitness plans, coaching drills and session plans and we’ll be hosting coaching academies, empowering events and health and wellbeing workshops throughout the state.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in coaching clinics and netball events in the past, but I found it was difficult to connect with the netballers due to the sheer number of participants.

“I have undertaken some of the programs for NETFIT in the past and I really love the holistic nature of the program. As I like to say, participants come for the netball and many stays for everything else,” Ms Langman says.

Ms Langman says the NETFIT holiday clinic is ideal for participants aged from five to 15, which commenced recently with a school holiday program at the Sunshine Coast Netball Association at Maroochydore Sports Complex on Fisherman’s Road. A nine-month NETFIT academy for players under 15 is also planned while a NETFIT tour will take place at Noosa North Shore from September 22-29 and a 10-week NETFIT YouFit program is set to commence in October.
