From the editor As Queensland was plunged into a COVID resurgence earlier this week, I couldn’t help but consider the stark contrast between the Sunshine Coast’s most recent cases.

First we had the Melbourne couple, who in June hurtled the entire southeast into crisis mode as a direct result of their dishonesty and irresponsibility.

This week, it’s an entirely different story with the person at the centre of the region’s Delta crisis putting the safety of our community first. On Monday, the FIFO worker made headlines throughout the country when she took to social media to break down her diagnosis and ease community concern (story, page six).

This woman should be celebrated for not only following protocol and acting selflessly, but speaking out to reassure the thousands of people who were on

tenterhooks following the outbreak. As Jane Stephens writes in her column (page 36) this week, we can do better being less selfish.

Amen to that.

New COVID concern As the southeast teetered on the verge of a lockdown earlier this week, Sunshine Coast residents were again reminded of how to get through a potential COVID outbreak. ed d D

s fears of a Queensland – or potentially national – lockdown loomed on Monday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk urged residents to remain diligent and remember basic COVID-19 preventative measures – handwashing and social distancing.

The advice came as a female FIFO worker who tested positive for the Delta strain on the Sunshine Coast spoke out to allay people’s concerns about her movements, saying she did not mix in the community. The woman revealed on Facebook how she acted quickly and responsibly as soon as she discovered there were concerns about FIFO workers.

The mine worker said she wanted to give people on the Sunshine Coast peace of mind that “at no time did I mix within your community”.

“These are the facts. I am the person involved,” wrote the woman in a group Facebook forum as she detailed her

movements. “Friday June 25th. Flew from Granites Gold Mine to Darwin. Caught a plane from Darwin to Brisbane. Caught a shuttle bus from Brisbane to residence in Bli Bli area.

“I wore a mask the whole time from Granites to the residence in Bli Bli including on the shuttle bus.

“At this point I had no symptoms and was unaware of the virus,” she wrote.

“Saturday 26th June. Left early from residence and travelled by car to Moura. I looked at my phone at this stage and found the notification from my worksite stating that a positive case had been confirmed and that all employees were to get tested immediately and quarantine themselves.

“I drove back to the residence in Bli Bli and quarantined.

“Sunday June 27. Went directly to Nambour Hospital wearing a mask for testing. Came directly back to Bli Bli and returned to quarantine. Once a positive result was confirmed I waited until an

ambulance collected me from the residence and transported me to SCUH where I will be in isolation until a negative result is obtained after 14 days minimum.”

Additionally, those people hit hard by factors such as losing a job, social isolation or caring for a loved one were most likely to experience anxiety and depression.

• Take a break – being exposed to large volumes of negative information can heighten feelings of anxiety. It’s okay to switch off if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Don’t skip the flu jab Flu cases may be virtually non-existent thanks to COVID-19, but health experts warn against complacency and say an influenza pandemic is always a future possibility. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

ith COVID in the spotlight over the past 18 months, it seems the usual public health baddie at this time of year – the flu – has gone MIA. Flu rates are at an historic low, and while many of us are keen to get the COVID jab, the prevailing attitude towards the flu vaccine is a bit ‘meh’. But while flu numbers are down, now is not the time to forget about the flu vaccine, public health experts say.

Professor John Lowe, from the University of the Sunshine Coast, says that kind of complacency “is just what will start the brushfire”.

Prof Lowe says we’re going to have to get used to a new way of life – handwashing, social distancing, a yearly flu jab and possibly an annual COVID vaccination – for the foreseeable future.

“Skipping the flu vaccine this year is not recommended because, as we’ve seen with COVID, outbreaks can occur immediately and what you’re doing is taking a chance that you’re going to be in a flu-free or COVID-free environment,” he says.

“As we’ve seen so many times, all it takes is one person to come into that environment and everything can change.

“From a public health perspective, it wouldn’t be recommended that you not get the flu vaccine or COVID vaccine, or quit washing your hands and social distancing.”

Still, the reduced flu rates are good news. The Australian Influenza Surveillance

Report is published fortnightly during the influenza season, typically between May and October. Up to the week ending June 6 this year, only 326 flu notifications had been reported to the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS) across Australia, with no associated deaths.

No hospital admissions due to influenza have been reported across the major reporting hospitals since surveillance started in April this year. Contrast that with the corresponding period two years ago. In the fortnight between June 17 and June 30, 2019, a total of 22,047 notifications of influenza were reported to the NNDSS. Of those, 3528 were in Queensland alone.

The Australian Department of Health’s 2019 Influenza Season summary showed a total of 310,011 laboratory-confirmed flu notifications to the beginning of December.

On a more serious note, by October 6 that year, more than 800 influenzaassociated deaths had been officially recorded for 2019, with 782 of those deaths due to influenza A. Those victims ranged in age from under 12 months to 102 years.

Dr Penny Hutchinson, a Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service public health physician, says Australia continues to have significantly lower numbers of confirmed influenza cases locally, statewide and nationally compared with the same time in previous years.

respiratory hygiene, isolating when unwell and … the closure of borders to international travel and quarantining of international travellers – [have been] effective in preventing influenza,” she says.

While Dr Hutchinson says it’s difficult to determine how many people have had the flu jab this year. But from information available, flu vaccination rates for 2021 to date are lower than previous years.

FluTracking shows only 45 per cent of Australians aged between 18 and 64 had

received the flu vaccine by May 20, while at the same point last year, 71.8 per cent of people in that age bracket had been vaccinated. Experts believe possible reasons for this are complacency due to the lower flu rates and a greater sense of urgency to have the COVID vaccine.

“Given there is a time interval between the administration of COVID-19 and the influenza vaccine, this may impact on when people have their influenza vaccine,” Dr Hutchinson says.

She tells My Weekly Preview that the low take-up of the flu vaccine “could be due to the lower rates of influenza or a delay in people having their influenza vaccine due to the need to have the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible”.

With most people now habitually handwashing, socially distancing and staying home when sick, could this change the face of the flu as we know it?

“Globally, influenza numbers are low and this reflects the reduction in international travel and the quarantining of international travellers,” Dr Hutchinson says. “But once international borders re-open, it is likely influenza cases will increase. Given this may not be for another 12 months, influenza numbers may remain low for the foreseeable future.

“Influenza is a zoonotic disease [derived from animals] and will eventually return. There is also the possibility that we will have another influenza pandemic.” myweeklypreview.com.au

Hutchinson says. “There are a couple of reasons that people may have influenzalike symptoms following vaccination.

“Between one and 10 per cent of people will develop influenza-like symptoms of fever, malaise and myalgia in the days following influenza vaccination due to the body’s immune response to the vaccine.

At a glance • Vaccination against influenza (flu) remains important this year.

Behaviours such as increased handwashing and social distancing helped to stop the spread of flu viruses in the community last year. Relaxed social-distancing restrictions this year may allow flu viruses to recirculate, even if they were hardly seen in 2020.

• Vaccination experts recommend flu vaccination for all people aged six months and over.

• Under the National Immunisation Program, free flu vaccines are provided to a number of high-risk groups.

Ask your doctor if you qualify.

• Vaccination experts recommend waiting seven days between getting a flu vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine.

• It doesn’t matter in what order you get the vaccines.

• When you book in for your flu vaccination, remember to tell your vaccination provider or clinic if you have received the COVID-19 vaccine (and when you received it). This will help them to plan your appointment.

• The World Health Organisation reports that, in a typical year, up to 650,000 people die from influenza globally.

• Flu vaccination is very effective — preventing illness in up to six out of 10 people who are younger than 65. This figure varies year by year.

Dr Penny Hutchinson says the influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone, and highly recommended for some at-risk groups.

“These include children six months to under five years, adults aged 65 and older, pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people who have certain underlying medical conditions.”

The influenza vaccine is free for these groups. Dr Hutchinson says people who have experienced anaphylaxis to previous influenza vaccination or any of its components should not have the influenza vaccine. There are also precautions for people who have developed Guillain-Barré syndrome in the six weeks following influenza vaccination.

If you’ve ever felt unwell or believed you’d “caught the flu” after a flu vaccine, you can’t blame it on the vaccine.

“As the influenza vaccine is not a live vaccine, it cannot give you influenza,” Dr

“Influenza vaccine takes up to two weeks to become fully effective. However, the incubation period of influenza is only a couple of days, so there is the possibility of being infected with influenza before the vaccine has had time to work. This is one of the reasons that people should have their influenza vaccine as soon as it becomes available.”

While the federal government initially recommended people wait at least 14 days between getting the flu vaccine and their COVID-19 vaccination, Dr Hutchinson says this advice has now changed.

“The preferred interval between having influenza vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine is now seven days, although the interval can be less in certain circumstances. It is important that people check with their doctor.”

But what about the extra burden placed on the body to deal with a number of vaccines in a short space of time? Professor John Lowe says it doesn’t tax the body unnecessarily.

“Every day, we’re fighting off quite a few bad germs,” he says. “These vaccines are no worse than what your body is fighting off every day.

“You can feel very lethargic after your second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, but it only lasts 24 hours as the body recalculates. And the next day, almost everybody reports being back to normal.

“One day of being lethargic compared to having COVID is a very small investment for a very large outcome.

“It’s like the next day after running a marathon – you just need a bit of time to recover and you’re ready to go again. As with any kind of preventative action, the payoff is great. It is a little bit of effort to go in, but as most people will say, the facilities around the Sunshine Coast are just amazing. You can get in and out very efficiently for both the COVID and flu vaccines, so it’s not a huge time commitment.”

Charity founder Ashton Wood says a mobile phone is something many take for granted, but it can be a lifesaver for a victim of domestic violence. “Often the mobile phone is the first thing to be destroyed, hacked or taken in a domestic violence situation, which means a victim has no way of making that emergency call,” Mr Wood says. “Together, the Sunshine Coast Turf Club and Hot 91.1, have in one day raised the single largest community fundraising contribution to DV Safe Phone to-date. NO GENERAL RATE INCREASE The latest Sunshine Coast Council budget reveals ratepayers have been spared a general increase, but will lose their early bird discount, with the $10 million saved going towards disaster services. WORDS: Kat Donaghey.

unshine Coast ratepayers will lose their $63.45 early bird discount but have been spared an increase in general rates while pensioners have been promised an extra 14 per cent off in this year’s council budget.

People who pay their bills before the due date will no longer receive the on-time discount of five per cent which is being scrapped, with that $10 million directed instead to disaster services.

The cost of wheelie bin collection will rise 2.5 per cent ($7.70) to $316.80, while the Environment Levy would jump by $4 to $80, with 100 per cent of that extra $600,000 for the council coffers targeted at invasive weeds. Sunshine Coast Council handed down its 2021/2022 budget last Thursday, which revealed most residential properties will continue to pay rates of around $1269.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says the budget, which has an operating surplus of $18.8 million, is aimed at supporting and growing the region during “challenging times” caused by the COVID pandemic.

“We developed a considered budget which focuses on support, safety and local recovery,” Cr Jamieson says.

“To this end, there will be no increase to the minimum general rate, which will benefit the majority of our ratepayers.

“All pensioners will benefit from a 14 per cent increase in their pensioner concession rate. Sole home owners on full pensions will receive a $262 concession, an increase of $32.

“Those on part-pensions will also benefit with their concession increasing to

between $74 and $205, depending on whether they own the property solely or jointly. There will be no increases in the majority of our levies, with the exception of the Environment Levy where we are proposing a $4 increase.

“To account for the increase in contractor expenses the cost of collecting a standard 240-litre domestic wheelie bin will increase by $7.70 from $309.10 to $316.80.

“And we will continue our unwavering commitment to supporting the region’s economy from the impacts of COVID by investing $268.9 million in job-creating local infrastructure projects along with increasing our spending on frontline services.”

Mayor Jamieson says the council’s $268.9 million capital works program is one of the largest in southeast Queensland, outside Brisbane and will create jobs while

building local infrastructure.

The Transport Levy and the Heritage Levy have not increased and remain $44 and $13 per annum respectively.

Mayor Jamieson says the saving from scrapping the five per cent rates discount will re-establish the $5-million Disaster Rehabilitation Reserve.

“This is a financially prudent approach to support our growing community, while avoiding an across-the-board increase in the general rate,” he says.

“Council remains committed however, to assisting ratepayers who cannot pay in full by the due date and will be continuing to offer payment arrangements.

Chances are there will be enough colourful digits to fill the Maroochy botanic gardens. You see, since COVID, this hobby has gone gangbusters.

Last year the nursery industry enjoyed one of its best years on record. During 2020, the Nursery Industry Statistics 2019-20 survey of Australian production nurseries revealed a record 2.2 billion plants were produced and sold in Australia.

Queensland Garden Expo event manager Marion Beazley says the surge corresponds with COVID restrictions. She

says with people housebound, there was a huge curiosity in growing food.

“Before long people were ready to get their hands dirty for a complete home garden makeover,” she says. “And people are now wanting to invest time in creating their own backyard oasis.”

Queensland Garden Expo chairman and Blue Sky Nursery marketing manager Simon Smith also attributed the garden boom to anxiety over fresh food

availability. He says fruit trees and vegetable seedlings in particular became very hard to source.

The annual 36th Queensland Garden Expo is set to descend on the Nambour Showgrounds from July 9 to 11. The speaker program is the biggest in Australia and will feature ABC’s Gardening Australia gurus Sophie Thomson, Costa Georgiadis and Jerry Coleby-Williams as well as event favourites Adam Woodhams, Dr Kevin

Redd and Phil Dudman. Other speakers and topics include Claire Bickle on keeping chickens; bee specialist Dr Tim Heard; fruit fly expert Professor Richard Drew and Peter Young on growing fruit trees.

Kids can also enjoy a range of interactive sessions such as kids craft, seed planting and, of course, the popular free kids playground.

Ms Beazley says while it is disappointing the 2020 Expo had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, the resulting increase in people gardening provides an exciting opportunity for this year’s event to attract new visitors.

“We’re confident the three-day Queensland Garden Expo will provide ample opportunity to nurture this newfound love for gardening.”

Sharing the gift of gardening First there were bushfires, then there was COVID and out of that grew a collective desire to re-discover the therapeutic benefits of gardening.

In January 2020, when the flames of the Kangaroo Island bushfires had dwindled and died, renowned horticulturalist and host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, Sophie Thomson was there with the community to provide solace through sharing the gift of gardening.

“Gardening provides some of the solutions to life’s challenges because it reduces stress, teaches us resilience, care of our environment and gives us great pleasure and rewards when we see what we can achieve through our endeavours,”she says.

Together with other members of the gardening industry, Ms Thomson established the ReGrowth Gardening Recovery project for fire-affected gardening areas in Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Hills.

She says the project was born out of her belief that “we need gardens and gardening to feed our minds, bodies and soul”.

“We had food insecurity and plant seeds became as scarce as toilet paper”

Ms Thomson gathered donations of money from individuals and groups together with soil, fertilisers, compost and plants from commercial nurseries to start the rebuild.

“But it wasn’t just about growing plants,” she says. “It was about growing the community.” In one area, they

created a community garden, and it was here the avid gardener, author, radio host and environmentalist saw the fruits of her labour sprout not only with the growth of a lush green seedlings, but through the necessary teamwork and formation of friendships. Ms Thomson says it was an extremely emotional time,

because as the new plants gave hope, it was also a reminder of the terrible loss endured by residents.

However, by March, the arrival COVID foreshadowed further upheaval.

Speaking from her three-acre property in South Australia, where she lives with her five children and a menagerie of animals, Ms Thomson says that now more than ever, we need to experience the therapeutic value of gardening.

The changes COVID has wrought upon us roll off her tongue: the transfer from office to home, self-isolating, quarantining, lockdowns.

Additionally, she notes, “We had food insecurity and plant seeds became as scarce as toilet paper.”

Long before all of this she was a strong advocate for sustainable gardening practices, growing organic food, cooking from the home garden, and creating backyards where kids can play freely and develop a lifelong connection with nature.

At the same time as Ms Thomson joyfully writes her books and hosts shows, she also labels herself as an obsessivecompulsive gardener.

“If it weren’t for the demands of my family and career, I would spend every day in the garden,” she says.

rom four donuts a day to 5000 on a Saturday morning, Jenna Sanders has transformed a small country bakery into a weekend destination for visitors from far and wide.

Her recipe for success is simple: hard work, social media and great customer service.

Ms Sanders says when she bought the bakery in the small hinterland town of Kenilworth four years ago, her vision was to create a place for families to visit on the weekend. “My family has been in the bakery business for three generations. I was looking to relocate to the Sunshine Coast, and we’d come across the 97-yearold Kenilworth Country Bakery,” Ms Sanders says.

Ms Sanders is sharing her story as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Local

Business Champions series, highlighting the success and capability of the local business community.

The series acknowledges local business efforts, whether it is a change in their business models to grow current or new business; new business ideas to recover from COVID; or an inspiring story from a local business owner.

As part of her journey, Ms Sanders began using social media as a free marketing tool, soon realising people love taking and sharing photos of donuts.

“Donuts are really appealing on Instagram and Facebook – they’re still only 50 per cent of our business but they’re the only thing we use in our marketing because people love taking and sharing photos of them,” she says.

“When we started, we were making

just a few donuts a day and it’s not actually my forte. My family are pie makers and that has been my background for the past 15 years, so we’ve had to learn how to make donuts really quickly.”

The road to success for the Kenilworth Country Bakery hasn’t been smooth but Ms Sanders’ resilience and quick-thinking during the COVID-19 pandemic is the reason she is a Sunshine Coast Local Business Champion.

“During COVID-19 we were forced to think on our feet and change our business model fast to offer home deliveries.

“Kenilworth is just over 50 kilometres from most places so during the lockdown, no one could drive out here.

“It absolutely ruined the town and ruined the bakery. We were getting 10 customers each day as opposed to 300.

With more than 100 years of diary experience, the Cochrane family took over the Kenilworth Dairies factory in 2017. Like many other local businesses, Kenilworth Dairies had to re-assess operations in 2020, and launched the company’s own milk. “Kenilworth Dairies underwent big procedure changes, the temporary closure of Poppa’s Cafe, intensive staff pandemic procedure training and a halt on our much-loved cheese tastings,” owner John Cochrane says. “We moved staff around the factory to try and avoid job losses and discovered some otherwise hidden talents. Once the dust settled and we were all becoming familiar with our new ways of working we then felt a demand on production with an increase in Aussies supporting local business. To meet this demand, Kenilworth Dairies increased factory production. As a result, we hired seven new employees, from factory staff, mousse and yoghurt makers to cafe and office staff.”

Adam Tomlinson’s dream started in December 2008 during a craft brewery tour in the US. Twelve years later it came to fruition with the opening of Stalwart Brewing Company at Nambour. “I was so excited to move in here at the start of 2020, but then COVID came, so I was left with a pub with no beer,” he says. Despite many challenges, Mr Tomlinson opened his brew pub on July 18, 2020. Sunshine Coast-born-and-bred family, trapped in the middle of the escalating rental crisis, is urgently seeking a place to call home after being told they have

just 60 days to leave their property.

Shelly Lamont, her partner and two young boys have lived in Palmwoods for almost three years and are now in search of alternative accommodation after the

According to the report, some tenants were paying tens of thousands of dollars up front, offering to upgrade houses at their own expense and ditching muchloved pets in a bid to secure homes.

The report said those offering $100 a week more than the advertised rate and six to 12 months’ rent up front were cutting out other applicants.

Ms Lamont, her partner and their boys now have less than a month to move out.

She says when applying for a rental, she has sometimes been up against close to 100 applicants for one property.

“I heard that 72 people were applying for one house, by my real estate agent. I’ve

also had people offering me break leases on their houses, but the rent is being put up by 50 per cent. I find it really shocking the stats of what is happening.

“I’ve rented all my life, and I’ve never put in more than two or three applications and been knocked back.”

Ms Lamont says many locals like herself cannot compete with the money interstate arrivals can offer on houses.

“Our [income] is not going up but our cost of living is going up so, so much.

“I think it is really scary for people who are locals who don’t own their own house and are working as hard as they can and have kids. You just feel like you are pedalling on a rat wheel; you’re not going to get anywhere.”

There is predicted to be 182,000 extra residents on the Sunshine Coast by 2041 as people move to the Coast to take up the increasing number of jobs and to fulfil their lifestyle dreams.

The Buderim Foundation’s 2021 grants program is now open for applications, with up to $10,000 available to community organisations serving the 4556 community.

This year grants can be used for projects or organisational operational costs that directly benefit residents in the 4556 postcode area. Last year, $85,022 in grants was awarded to 20 local organisations.

Foundation Grants Committee chair Rebecca Ramsay says it is only through the generous support of donors that the foundation can invest money and generate returns that can be re-invested in the community each year.

“By investing in organisations serving the Buderim and 4556 community, we strive to support and encourage positive initiatives that include assisting people to live healthy and fulfilling lives, encouraging cultural endeavours, increasing learning opportunities, protecting and preserving our natural environment and supporting youth in our community,” she says.

Eligible applicants can apply online before July 11, with successful applicants to be announced at the foundation’s 2021 annual community grants celebration on September 12.

Stage one works are underway and will be ready to enjoy by the start of September, weather and site conditions permitting. This extension of welcoming outdoor creekside recreation space will build on Nambour’s familyfriendly areas and will be a great addition for residents, visitors and new people set to call Nambour home. Footpaths will connect the new park to Quota Memorial Park and the project will include lush landscaping, more seating and shaded picnic areas. Council consulted with the community in 2018 on what they would like to see in the new park and one of the main requests was a dog off-leash area which will be a feature. Keep an eye on the progress – it’s terrific to see this space continue to be transformed in Nambour.

Rotary Club of Buderim is urgently seeking help for a new storage facility After supporting the local community for 27 years, the Rotary Club of Buderim is set to lose its storage facility in a matter of weeks and is in urgent need of help.

For many years, a generous Buderim local has allowed the club to store its shed and goods on the former Buderim Men’s Shed site.

The club’s Cathy McKenzie says since Buderim Men’s Shed has relocated, the land has been sold.

“We are hoping that someone in our community might have some spare land big enough for us to erect our three-by-five-metre shed, or a vacant shed or garage they don’t use,” Ms McKenzie says.

“Or perhaps a local business that has space in their warehouse. It is not a large space we need, and we are accessing it infrequently.

“We are used to people coming to us for help, not the other way around, but we have every confidence in the generosity of our local community.”

The club is well respected and organises the annual Australia Day event in Buderim. It is also involved with the yearly street party, Carols in the Park, Walk for Mental Health and the Pride of Workmanship Award, to name a few.

However, Mr Ginns persisted and the pair had their first date driving around the beaches and tourist sites of Sydney.

Mrs Ginns’ parents lived in Nanango, so the pair married at the Nanango CWA Hall in 1952. They then moved to Caloundra in 1970.

“Mum felt it was like coming home for her, just the feeling of living back in Queensland,” Ross says The couple has four children, nine grandchildren, and nine greatgrandchildren with another on the way.

Mr Ginns worked as a truck driver for Landsborough Shire Council from 1970 to 1988 and Mrs Ginns worked at Caloundra Hospital back when there were only 20 beds.

The couple was also integral in helping the Caloundra Ambulance Christmas Carnival for more than 16 years and sold their well-known chilli jam at the Maleny Markets for 22 years.

The couple’s secret to 69 years of marriage is “to enjoy each other’s company, have love, forgiveness and to not let the sun set on your disagreements”.

A Sunshine Coast couple who recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary is settling into life at Golden Beach after 36 years living in Landsborough.

Both aged 94, living independently and with a passion for gardening and fishing, John and Phyllis Ginns celebrated the milestone on June 28.

The couple’s son Ross says his parents met in February 1951 at a weekly dance at Sydney’s Marrickville Town Hall.

SICK TO DEATH OF SELFISH PEOPLE

BARNABY’S CIRCUS IS BACK

Jane Stephens has had enough of selfish people who don’t follow the COVID rules and cause outbreaks that affect us all.

Ashley Robinson is not thrilled to see Barnaby Joyce back in the hot seat, but reckons all politicians are as bad as each other.

The rules are that such drivers need to be tested daily, but he didn’t partake. His selfishness set off a chain reaction, a series of disease bombs that continue to go off in unforeseen places over the border.

Can such selfish people please just not?

Social pressure may squeeze this trend into submission, filling a space that the threat of fines and mandated legal requirements doesn’t seem to penetrate.

But the selfishness scourge extends beyond law breaking into our very social fibre. The litterer on the Maroochy River waterfront. The one who defecates but does not bury in the sand dunes at Teewah. The person who insists on playing the profane music loudly on the bus.

We can do better in being less selfish. It is applying a little bit of ‘woah’ on Nicklin Way in the race between the lights and letting the panicked driver next to you switch lanes. It is the offering to let someone with two items go through the checkout before you at the supermarket. It is the not going to work when you feel ill, because you could hurt an entire business.

If altruism seems a bridge too far, some basic consideration is surely not too much to hope for. Let’s start with baby steps.

rioritising yourself should be a principal life focus, we are told.

Offload toxic friends, unfollow those you don’t like anymore, say no to an invitation without making up an excuse – be selfish, the self-help gurus intone. You deserve it.

I say do whatever floats your boat, but when your self-focus adversely affects others in a major way, please throw out that internal love and light mantra and consider the harm your selfishness can cause.

Cases of such egotism are not hard to find – and plenty were on show this past month as we dealt with the ongoing pandemic. There was the COVID-positive Victorian couple who fled their lockeddown region and ended up in our neck of the woods. The woman did not get tested despite having symptoms, they did not get an exemption to enter Queensland and they didn’t go into quarantine on arrival.

The selfishness was breathtaking. Their $4000 fines hardly seem enough.

The current cluster in New South Wales that has marred school holiday bookings on the Sunshine Coast started with a limousine driver who transported flight crew to and from hotel quarantine.

think Barnaby Joyce being reinstated as Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the National Party says a lot about where politics sits at the present moment. Adding insult to injury was the fact that only hours before the leadership spill, he denied contending or even wanting the job.

What a sham. It is no secret that in most cases, I am on the Liberal/National side of politics, but once again I get disappointed with both sides. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s left or right.

How can we believe any of them? Even more questionable to me is how dare some of these folk actually think they are a class above their constituents, when in fact they are allegedly working for us, the taxpayers?

What a joke. Of course we all get the press statements about what they have done for their particular area, they mail out flyers patting themselves on the back and making absolutely certain we don’t happen to miss what they reckon they have achieved.

This latest affair (pardon the pun) seems to have been perpetrated by Queensland members of the Nationals, which scares me a bit as apparently the

reasoning was that an agitating politician is not such a bad thing. I guess when you look at the Katter clan it has worked well for them, so maybe Barnaby is on the right track for political longevity, which in my view is many politicians’ only strategy: ‘How long can I stay in power and what do I have to do, who do I have to suck up to and who do I have to burn to keep my seat?’ In one of the press feeds on the subject, a trucker from the Queensland bush compared him to Donald Trump and that was supposed to be a compliment.

I remember back in the Joh days when I was travelling around Australia, the southerners used to hammer me about him and the daylight savings faded curtains and confused cows thing, but I defended him even though he was a Kiwi.

Well sorry, Barnaby being a bloody cockroach, I certainly can’t defend him even though it appears some questionable Queenslanders seem to be to blame for his head popping up again in the political circus in this country.

Barnum and Bailey Circus may be gone, but Barnaby’s is alive and well.

God help us.

60 YEARS YOUNG Sami Muirhead is shocked that George Clooney turned 60 this year and says in her mind, he will always be a handsome young playboy.

E

xcuse me, but when did George Clooney get older and join the rest of us mere mortals, with our bits dropping down as our age goes up?

George Clooney was never truly young.

Well, of course he was in real life, but we first saw him as a 24-year old handyman on The Facts of Life. He really materialised in our consciousness when he played that dreamy doctor in ER on TV. He was 33 years of age in real life. And in most of his work, he has played responsible roles older than his actual age that required costumes such as uniforms, scrubs, or space suits.

He was that guy who was always kicking goals, having dinner with all the big hitters around the world, including Barack Obama, and encouraging us plebs to do something about climate change before it is too late.

But the thing is, George Clooney was never OLD. He was the eternal bachelor. He owned a pet pig. He rode a motorbike. He bragged he would never get married again.

He bought a tequila company. He played basketball, flirted with Julia Roberts and tricked journalists with practical jokes. He kind of just magically stayed the same perfect age, somehow stuck between

naughty little boy and charismatic and suave man of the world. But a few months ago George turned 60! How did this happen, people?

This is a question posed by a middleaged mum who thinks she is 33 most weeks. I am baffled where time has gone and how, all of a sudden, I am a few painkiller prescriptions away from hitting 50. I am happiest at home on a Friday night with my slippers and hot water bottle and dogs at my feet. Going out is about as appealing as catching the plague.

But back to Clooney, who had neck surgery recently after falling off his motorcycle. George admitted the team of medical specialists found traces of arthritis in him during the operation. I think George will be okay with his mansion on Lake Como, as he continues to do life his way and plays with his three-year-old twins and lawyer activist wife.

This year Barack Obama also turns 60.

So do Boy George, Heather Locklear, Ricky Gervais, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael J Fox, and Eddie Murphy. Somehow Meg Ryan is also turning 60, which blows my mind.

Princess Diana would have turned 60 this year as well. The laugh lines and grey hairs are the price we pay for living.

When the very fine nerve hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea) are damaged, it causes permanent hearing loss. The

damage is normally not across the complete cochlea, so it causes a hearing loss that generally effects the ability to hear high frequency sounds. These include ‘S’ , ‘Sh’, ‘Th’, ‘F’ and ‘T’ sounds and are usually the beginning or end of words. This creates a misunderstanding and a confused conversational state.

Radiofrequency neurotomy (or RFN) is a specialised, minimally invasive procedure that is used to provide intermediate to long-term pain relief from chronic pains, such as knee pain, neck pain and lower back pain.

Skin cancer is a major problem that Australians in particular face on a regular basis. In fact, skin cancers account for more than 80 per cent of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia every year, and more than 11,500 men and women will be diagnosed with a melanoma this year (and every year) in Australia.

The good news is that almost all skin cancers, including melanoma, are curable if detected early.

Right now most of us are wanting to cover up and enter a season of hibernation.

Unfortunately, skin cancers are not seasonal, and sometimes can grow quite rapidly while our attention is focused elsewhere. So here are a few great reasons to consider getting your skin cancer check done while it is still cooler outside: 1. Your less tanned skin is easier to examine.

2. You are still exposed to the sun and may still develop skin damage.

3. Skin cancers may take months or even years to develop.

Researchers at the National Library of Medicine have established a link between positivity and wellbeing. A study of more than 7000 adults found those who were happier ate more nutritiously, consuming 47 per cent more fresh fruit and vegetables and exercising 33 per cent more frequently than their less positive counterparts. The same participants also slept better.

The role nutrition, exercise and sleep play in maintaining a healthy immune system has been known for decades, but data now shows being happy may also improve immunity.

In a different study, researchers vaccinated 81 university students against hepatitis B. Happy students had nearly double the antibody response rate, suggesting a more robust immune system.

While the effects of happiness on the immune system are not fully understood, and more definitive research is needed, most people would agree that it is easier to feel good physically when you feel happy and positive within. he residential property market is still roaring along, but expect some headwinds says University of Sunshine Coast senior economics lecturer, Dr Robert Alexander.

Owner-occupier loan commitments reached another all-time high in April, up 4.3 per cent to $23 billion the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports.

Home prices continue upwards,

pushed by several factors including HomeBuilder, which Dr Alexander argues is about bolstering the construction industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As an economist, I am not in favour of subsiding the industry in that way because all it does is drive the prices up for everyone,” Dr Alexander says.

“It looks good politically and the

courtesy of these arrangements. He warns, “Evidence seems to be that they are more likely to default on that mortgage down the track.”

Interest rates also concern Dr Alexander. The RBA is committed to its low cash rate for the next few years and continuing to buy government bonds. “I don’t think we are going to see much hike in the interest rates for the next two to

three years,” Dr Alexander says.

“Except, there are other factors that could push rates up.”

If interest rates internationally increase, the cost of funding for banks will go up. Banks are currently financing their mortgage costs at attractive rates, but if those financing rates move upwards or inflation takes off, mortgage rates will go up.

If a mortgage rate increases from three to four per cent, that’s a 33 per cent increase on a monthly mortgage.

“I don’t know that there are too many people who are heavily in debt who could manage that,” Dr Alexander says.

The current situation is impacting on people at the bottom end of the income distribution “very hard”.

“That’s where I see the story going on the Sunshine Coast mostly,” he adds.

“You are driving people in rental positions into a very difficult situation because you have a lot of investors holding these properties and as soon as they have to put the rent up or feel able to put the rent up, you are squeezing those people out of the market altogether.”

controversial final minute penalty has gifted Queensland an 8-6 win over New South Wales and back-to-back Women’s State of Origin titles at a wet Sunshine Coast Stadium. An estimated 7200 committed fans braved the weather and packed into the stadium to witness a home team victory.

The Sky Blues saw red after Friday’s match, accusing Chelsea Lenarduzzi of

“milking” the penalty when Filomina Hanisi pulled her leg as the Maroons prop tried to play the ball right in front of the posts.

The hard-fought clash held in miserable weather looked headed for golden point, but New South Wales were left shattered when Queensland centre Lauren Brown slotted the match-winning penalty with just 20 seconds left.

“It is just a really s*** way to lose a game

right on full-time,” says rookie Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder.

New South Wales captain Kezie Apps was left shaking her head over the call that ensured Queensland backed up from last year’s 24-18 win and squared the Origin ledger at 2-2. “I thought she was milking it,” she says of Lenarduzzi.

Lenarduzzi celebrated after the penalty was blown, no doubt breathing a sigh of relief after her gaffe helped New South Wales lock it up at 6-6 and ensure a tense finish.

Lenarduzzi was placed on report for a dangerous tackle in the 52nd minute before recalled Sky Blues No.7 Maddie Studdon slotted the penalty kick to level the scores.

Maroons coach Tahnee Norris says she thought the last-minute penalty made up for Queensland No.1 Tamika Upton’s 64th minute disallowed try.

Upton’s effort was for nought after Julia Robinson was deemed to have obstructed NSW playmaker Corban Baxter in the lead-up.

“I think we were unlucky with the obstruction call before. We will take that penalty,” Norris says.

MAJOR ANNUAL SPORTING EVENT STAYS ON COAST

Sunshine Coast Council wants a clearer picture of the true benefits of the region’s flagship sporting event, the Mooloolaba Triathlon, after locking in financial support for another three years.

Councillors voted in support of extending its sponsorship contract for the event until 2024 at Thursday’s meeting.

The 2022 event will mark the 30th

instalment of the triathlon, now considered the second-largest event of its kind in Australia behind Noosa.

Event organiser Ironman Oceania estimates about 4000 participants will attend each year between 2022–24. The event is estimated to provide “millions of dollars” worth of marketing value for Mooloolaba and surrounding areas.

Well , well, I must admit it was torture watching Queensland truly put to the sword last week.

But it was a 200 per cent improvement on the previous score line, so that is encouraging… apparently.

By rights, the last game should be close.

Okay, Saturday and Sunday should be fantastic conditions everywhere, so see if you can find your own sandbank and enjoy what is on offer. Should be small, but hopefully fun.

The weather has limited the offshore fishing, but when you get a break the inner reefs are still producing a good mixed bag of reef fish. The early bird catches the fish, so early mornings before the wind gets up is the time to go. Gar in the Mooloolah River are still running hot and at night around the trawlers has still been the best for some quality bream and the odd trev.

Flathead are also still in good numbers in all the systems. Beaches have been better of late with some good quality dart and a few tailor, you just need to work a few gutters till you find them as there has been no hot spots of late.

Dams have been very quiet for the bass but a few have been caught in the timbers using bait over lures.
