From the editor The Sunshine Coast’s public transport network – or lack thereof – has been a debate-raising and sometimes contentious issue for many years.

It was during the mid-90s when residents were first introduced to the concept of the Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study (CAMCOS). The Queensland Transport study into the possibility of an integrated transport route was completed in 2001, following community consultation.

Subsequent track upgrading and duplication from Caboolture to Beerburrum was completed in 2009, in preparation for the proposed new rail line to Caloundra and Maroochydore.

Studies complete, land acquired and yet the project was left abandoned.

Now, a 7000-strong community group wants to use the identified corridor to solve

the region’s local transport issues. They say the Sunshine Coast Council’s light rail proposal will not answer community need.

Don’t fall victim to scams Scammers cost Australians $851 million in 2020. Here’s what to watch out for this tax season. WORDS: Paul HaskellDowland and Nathalie Collins, Edith Cowan University.

T

he end of the financial year is near. So all of us — especially those scrambling at the last minute to get their receipts in order — should keep an eye out for the accompanying onslaught of tax scams.

Posing as the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in particular has been a key vehicle for scammers to target victims, with considerable success over the years.

According to an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report, scams targeting Australians last year cost an estimated $851 million. Reported financial losses over the past five years show a clear upward trajectory.

And while this is clearly concerning, it only represents a proportion of the overall problem, as many victims are unlikely to report being scammed.

Scams come in various forms. Often they will use social engineering to convince victims to reveal personal information or to participate in their scheme. They rely on

the same emotional triggers marketers use to encourage purchasing.

The excitement of chasing (and getting) a good deal leads to a feeling of selfsatisfaction that’s hard to resist. Bargainhunting, in other words, makes us feel smart. But it doesn’t mean we are smart.

Criminals rely on this to bypass a potential victim’s rational brain and appeal directly to their emotions. Scams will often frighten victims with threats of financial or even criminal penalties.

Scammers will use any event or entity as an opportunity to undertake fraudulent behaviour. The ATO therefore presents them a valuable opportunity, as having to interact with it at some point is a nearuniversal experience for Australians.

Scams based on the ATO are so common that the body has a dedicated page to alert taxpayers with examples from the preceding two years. Phone scams in particular have attracted a lot of attention.

Tax time is the perfect opportunity for

scammers, as taxpayers are often timepoor, working to a deadline and are conscious of the legal consequences of failing to comply.

Receiving an email, SMS or voice call at this time of year with a tax-related matter has an air of legitimacy and a sense of urgency (we don’t want to be fined).

But illegitimate demands for payment and requests for information can lead to huge financial losses and identity fraud.

While the ATO does phone and send text messages to individuals, it will never ask you to make a payment to nullify an arrest warrant, nor will it threaten you with revoking your Tax File Number, as is done in some scams. It also won’t ever call you using prerecorded messages.

These messages are known as RoboCalls. They can range from sounding quite genuine to being almost laughable. In either case, if you ever wish to follow up you should contact the ATO directly. Do not respond to the message, and do not provide

any information. Moreover, don’t trust an email or website based simply on its appearance. Anyone can copy the ATO’s website and branding.

Requests for unusual payment methods, such as via Western Union or cryptocurrency, are also indicators of a tax scam. Similarly, any requests to pay your tax with gift cards should be reported.

If you are suspicious of a communication you’ve received, the best way to react is to not react. Take a breath, count to five and ask yourself whether what you’re looking at seems legitimate. Is it unusual in any way?

Scammers rely on victims acting quickly on impulse. Pausing and reflecting is the best weapon against social engineering. Take time to consider who the message is from. What are they asking you to do, and why?

The ATO provides a useful set of examples and advice regarding how scammers try to convince victims of their legitimacy. If you know you’ve been scammed, or suspect you may have been, the first step is to contact the ATO (always using the phone number on the official website). You can also report the incident directly via the ATO’s report a scam page, ato.gov.au or through ScamWatch, scamwatch.gov.au.

If you’ve already lost money to scammers, unfortunately there are limited options because most scams send stolen money to offshore accounts, making recovery almost impossible. Year after year, we can’t avoid doing our taxes. But if we’re careful, calm and aware, we can avoid being taken advantage of by scammers.

Solving our traffic woes

Sunshine Coast community group The Beach Matters is calling for leaders to reconsider the old CAMCOS land, which is sitting idle, as the answer to our transport woes. MAIN STORY: Peter Hall.

he 7000-strong community group, The Beach Matters, believes a smart, cost-effective and swift solution to the Sunshine Coast’s growing traffic woes could be hidden in plain sight.

The group, which has an array of prominent members from former deputy prime minister and treasurer Wayne Swan to developer Mal Pratt, surf legend Hayden Kenny and bestselling author and book producer Rachael Bermingham, has lodged its submission on the future of transport in the region.

This was in response to Sunshine Coast Council’s Options Analysis Paper for a mass transit system, which investigates five options from Maroochydore to Birtinya, including buses, road upgrades, light rail and trams. The public consultation period ended June 22.

In its submission, The Beach Matters Group called for a new look at an old resource – the Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study (CAMCOS) land, which has been sitting dormant since the late 1990s.

The State Government completed countless studies and resumed properties for a promised rail link between Beerwah and Sunshine Coast Airport, with stations at Pelican Waters, Caloundra, Aroona, Kawana, Parrearra, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. This never eventuated and there was no funding for the project.

The Beach Matters Group, however, wants the unused corridor to be included as one of the “major spines’’ of a new environmentally friendly electric, hydro or

It wants a broader bus network to “connect all our communities and ease congestion in all of our towns, not just along the coastal corridor”.

The group says putting more infrastructure, such as light rail, and more people along the Nicklin Way/Brisbane Rd/ Alex stretch doesn’t solve the issues.

“Introducing the CAMCOS is clever.

State Government has already resumed properties and it’s been sitting there idle,’’ the submission says.

“If we use that route to get people moving between Caloundra to the Maroochydore CBD via Kawana Way, then we can disperse destination and thoroughfare traffic. There is less disruption on the community, businesses and traffic along the coast corridor and

we’re not adding even more weight to that one route, we’re distributing it and giving residents another faster alternative to get between Caloundra and Maroochydore.

“Internally within the Sunshine Coast we need two main routes – destinational traffic along the coastal corridor (Nicklin Way/Brisbane Road/Alex Parade) for those specifically going to these places, and thoroughfare traffic along the western urban corridor of the CAMCOS via Kawana Way into Mountain Creek/CBD for those commuting between Caloundra, the hospital, and the Maroochy CBD. “The CAMCOS line would have limited stops to ensure our preferred transport option being enviro buses could deliver commuters quickly from Caloundra to Maroochydore and eventually to the airport as well.’’

Free school/university travel “to inspire and encourage us to grow up with a much better public transport mindset and relationship,” is also called for in the group’s proposal.

“We need to begin changing the way we think about public transport at grassroots level. Having free school transport will reduce congestion around every school in the region and the angst that every parent feels trying to get to and from school or find a car park.”

Colour-coded smaller enviro buses running from two Park ’n’ Go facilities on the CAMCOS at Caloundra and the Maroochy CBD to shopping centres, environmental areas like Mount Coolum, the hinterland and the beach are also advised.

“The beach is our greatest economic drawcard, but we don’t make it easy on visitors coming to the area to get to it and enjoy it.”

President of The Beach Matters, Rachael Bermingham, says having a facility visitors can park their car at for the day and take a free hop-on hop-off beach bus that stopped at each patrolled beach from Mooloolaba Spit to Cotton Tree will not only help residents and visitors get to the beach and swim safely, it will reduce cars in these areas.

It would not dominate or damage our landscape like light rail would, and can move into the future, adapting to autonomous/on call/Uber-style options, and can be rolled out faster and cost less than light rail, with minimal impact on community and businesses.’’

The Beach Matters Group’s option was not among the council’s options in the survey, however, it says there is widespread interest and approval from the community and groups, along with developers, businesses, beachgoers, high profile and political heavyweights.

The Sunshine Coast Council’s 300-plus page Options Analysis Paper details the “problems and solutions” to future traffic on the Coast, as well as scenarios for higher-density development along the transport corridor.

It highlights the need for a mass transit system to get people out of cars.

The analysis includes nine options that were put to the public but shortlists five key mass transit transport solutions — ranging in price from $429 million to $1.553 billion — that have been analysed for their pros, cons and economics.

The council says it is undertaking the business case process to prove to the state and federal governments that this is a project worth investing in.

Much of the cost of delivering the mass transit system would be funded by the state and federal governments, and the cost of operating the system would be funded by the state government.

Subject to the council’s agreement, the finalised report will be sent to the state government for consideration and further assessment as the basis for the next phase – the Detailed Business Case.

The Sunshine Coast has the second-highest rate of private car ownership per capita of any local government area in Australia, second to Perth, according to the 2016 Census.

72.6% of people travelled to work in a private car, 2.3% took public transport and 3.3% rode a bike or walked (ABS, 2016).

According to Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Profile website, shows that in 2016 2.3% of respondents used public transport, while 72.6% used a private vehicle, compared with 11.4% and 66.2% respectively in Greater Brisbane.

It is predicted that without an improved mass transport system, Sunshine Coast residents will continue their high car dependence leading to a 50% increase in private vehicle travel over the next 20 years.

The council reports that for every 10 cars on the road now there will be at least another 5 cars by 2041, so the Sunshine Coast will become more known for its congested roads than its relaxed and friendly lifestyle.

Sunshine Coast Council Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski says the CAMCOS corridor – regardless of whether it is used for its intended purpose of heavy rail, or the proposed bus corridor – is too far from population centres to provide a solution. He says to use this method of transport, travellers would have to park and ride, which in turn would create increased congestion on roads.

“Council is – and always has been – of the view that both a rail solution on the CAMCOS Corridor and a local Mass Transit solution are needed if our Sunshine Coast community is to have the truly integrated and efficient public transport network it needs.

Local early childhood educator and family day care owner Tina Brooks has been recognised for her dedication to the industry, after being nominated in the Family Day Care Australia Excellence in Family Day Care Awards for the second year running.

Ms Brooks – who used the skills she developed while studying a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care in 2020 to achieve her goal of starting her own family day care service last year – is now supporting others in kick-starting their careers as educators, with this award nomination an acknowledgment of her passion.

“To be recognised within this industry from such an early stage within my business has really made me proud of the hard work and effort I have put in behind-the-scenes to make my service the best it can be,” Ms Brooks said.

“It has helped me realise that even though I do what I do for my own passion, it really reflects back onto the children in my care and that is visible by the parents and community.

“I am honoured to have received the nominations and I am already a winner within my own heart after receiving the acknowledgment of what I do.”

The 39-year-old mother-of-two started Tiny’s Family Day Care at her Buddina home in July last year, after putting her plans on the backburner for 17 years to raise her own daughters.

“Running my own family day care is a dream I have had since my first baby was young,” Ms Brooks said.

“I thought about the impact I had on their journey of life at that age and how much joy it bought me teaching them and inspiring them to be amazing humans, and it was then that I realised how much I wanted to make an impact on other children’s lives too. The younger years are when children are most vulnerable and if I can be there to help, guide, nurture, teach and inspire others, I knew would feel fulfilled.

“My daughters have both reached a stage now where they are more independent and I found myself with some spare time on my hands, so I thought to myself that I needed to make my dreams a priority. With that in mind, I enrolled in early childhood education and care at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus.”

Ms Brooks – who had been working in retail with the occasional foray into small hobby businesses – began studying at the start of 2020 and quickly knew she’d made the right decision.

“I loved being back in the classroom after so many years. I have a passion for personal growth and expanding my learning and skillset, so I thrived in this environment,” Ms Brooks said.

“It’s so rewarding seeing the children’s faces light up with beaming smiles – to see their excitement and even their sense of personal achievement in what they are engaging in really lights up my soul and melts my heart with joy and gratitude.”

Ms Brooks’ passion for early childhood education and care only continues to grow, with the small business owner fostering the future of the industry by taking two early childhood students under her wing for their vocational placements.

“Starting a family day care meant I could work from home and create programs I love to do with the children. It brings more freedom and flexibility with our daily rhythms and allows the children to feel more like they are at their second home rather than at a day care,” Ms Brooks said.

“I also love to give back whenever I can, so taking on students gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge and skills with others too. My ultimate goal is to increase my skills and knowledge within this industry and advance myself to a mentor position such as a family day care coordinator where I can guide and nurture other educators, or create a business where I can coach or mentor start-up other family day care educators on their journey of opening their own business.”

According to Family Day Care Australia, family day care services are responsible for the development and wellbeing of over 107,000 children across the country, with their home-like environments, smaller group sizes and flexible hours making them an attractive option for parents.

Sunshine Coast residents have received a major road safety boost following the federal government’s new investment of $300,000 toward two projects under the 2021–22 Black Spot Program. Over $150,000 will be invested in vehicle activated and static alignment warning signs, chevron alignment markers, road edge guideposts and raised reflective pavement markers on Blackall Range Road, West Woombye.

Other safety additions will be made at Shelly Beach at a cost of $143,000.

NEW DIETARY CLINIC Developing gestational diabetes in her first pregnancy came as a shock to Dr Evelyn (Pheh Ping) Chang. The experience inspired her to gain the qualifications to help others with dietary issues.

The mother-of-two wasted no time after recently completing a University of the Sunshine Coast Bachelor of Dietetics to launch her clinic, Rainbow Nutrition and Dietetics, at Maroochydore.

“At my clinic, I have a focus on chronic disease and gut health, weight management, as well as diabetes management,” she says.

Local community groups have received a funding boost through Round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant and the first round of the Investing in Queensland Women Grant. Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says more than $200,000 in grants will be paid to local groups. “It is really exciting to the see the community benefiting from these funding opportunities,” she says. “It was great to see Mudjimba Lifesaving Club receive funding for further club upgrades.”

NEW BUB AT SEA LIFE SEA LIFE has welcomed the arrival of a cownose ray pup.

The baby ray is the first of this species to be born at the Mooloolaba aquarium since it opened in 1989. “The male cownose ray was born in February and has been gaining his strength behind the scenes for the last few months,” SEA LIFE aquarist Laura Kippax says. “The baby ray can now be spotted by guests looking into our turtle pool but once he is a bit bigger and stronger, we will move him into our large Oceanarium display.”

BUDGET AIMED AT ROADS The Sunshine Coast will see the start of much-needed road and rail projects, a new school, upgrades to existing schools and improvements to both major hospitals as promised in the state government’s 2021 budget.

The budget released on June 15 will also deliver vital funding for social housing, with $38.5 million to expand and improve availability on the Coast.

The 2021-22 budget sets aside $4 million for stage one of the Sunshine Motorway’s Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade. Mayor Mark Jamieson is singling out the Mooloolah River Interchange funding as “the point in time when one of the region’s worst bottlenecks received the attention it desperately needs”.

“This goes to show that when governments work together, great things can be achieved and the beneficiaries are our communities,” he says.

“Anyone who travels in peak hour along the Sunshine Motorway from the Kawana Way interchange to the crossing of the Mooloolah River will tell you the bedlam that takes place each day and that traffic grinds to a standstill.

“This project will help to make this heavily congested part of our road network more accessible, enable it to carry greater capacity as the region continues to grow and provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for users.”

The Beerburrum-to-Nambour Rail Upgrade (stage one) has been earmarked for $29.4 million to upgrade sections of the North Coast rail line between Beerburrum station and Nambour station.

Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute at Kawana are also being expanding to meet growing community needs.

Sunshine Coast University Hospital will see $46.1 million for construction projects to improve facilities at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital site and Nambour General Hospital has also been earmarked $31.8 million to meet the functional requirements of the hospital in its new role as a sub-acute facility.

Lunch with rugby union royalty Sporting great, motivational speaker and successful businessman John Eales has a lot to say about leadership and business culture, and next month the Coast will be listening. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

t’s not every day a sporting great visits the Sunshine Coast, and when it’s someone as congenial and inspirational as rugby union royalty John Eales AM, there’s much cause for excitement. Mr Eales will visit the Coast on July 16 for the next In Conversation event at Venue 114 to talk leadership, productive teamwork and creating a positive culture.

Widely considered to be one of the greatest rugby players ever, his international Test debut in 1991 came only a year after his first appearance for Queensland. He was part of the 1991 World Cup-winning Wallabies and became captain in 1996. He served as Australia’s captain for more matches than any other player, retaining the position until his retirement in 2001. Mr Eales led the Wallabies to numerous victories and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1999, as well as being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the World Rugby Hall of Fame and the Australian Institute of Sport’s Best of the Best.

He’s also a successful businessman and is seen as an inspirational leader and motivational public speaker.

Having grown up in Brisbane, he spent a lot of time on the Sunshine Coast and has fond memories of the Wallabies using Caloundra as a base for two years when preparing for the World Cup in 1999.

“When Rod Macqueen was coach, he tried to look at things differently and one of the things he looked at was the way we prepared for games,” Mr Eales says. “The Wallabies

didn’t have a home base – we played all around Australia – and we’d be recreating training environments everywhere we went. He wanted to try and get as much regularity in the program, so we set up a place in Caloundra where we could have the same training facilities. It had good weather and was a bit less rushed than some of the cities. A lot of us had young families and they could come and live with us. From there, we’d go to play the game wherever that was and go back to Caloundra.”

Mr Eales is renowned for his calm temperament – he credits this to the influence of his father and Mr Macqueen.

“I’ve developed the ability to be clear-headed and composed in any situation, whether it be in sport, business or life in general,” Mr Eales says. “The world will throw curve balls at you. Very little is linear. There will be more crooked lines in your progress than straight lines. There will be ups and downs. Being able to look at those situations and approach them in a clear, calm and composed manner is something the best leaders are able to do.

“My father was a very composed person,” he says. “He didn’t panic.

He would always assess each decision on its merits.”

Having led one of the most successful Australian sporting teams in history, Mr Eales knows a thing or two about productive teamwork and creating a positive culture, which he says translates well to the business world.

“I don’t differentiate much between sport and business,” he says. “You need a structure aligned with your purpose, aligned with the people and the strategy. That is exactly the same no matter what you’re trying to achieve, whether in community, a sporting organisation or a business organisation.

“To create a positive culture, it’s about being conscious about the culture firstly. You don’t just let a culture happen.

The organisation will have a culture whether you work at it or not. Having a deliberate culture by design is better than having a culture by default. ” While Mr Eales is a role model to many, he’s also had his own role models. Apart from his father and Mr Macqueen he cites Daniel Petrie, founder of AirTree, who has also worked for some of Microsoft’s top teams in the US. “He has always understood and respected the balance between the importance of your work, but also the importance of other aspects of your life,” Mr Eales says.

“Your family, what you’re involved with outside of work life.

Make sure you look at yourself as a complete person, rather than someone who gets all of their identity from work.”

STEP BACK IN TIME A nostalgic rock eisteddfod looks set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Horizon Festival.

W

hen theatre maker Neridah Waters was unsuccessful in auditioning for her school rock eisteddfod 26 years ago, she knew she wanted to create a space were everyday people had the chance to perform on stage.

Now a ‘nostalgic’ rock eisteddfod inspired by the ’80s and ’90s is set to make up part of this year’s Horizon Festival.

A local team has been training since April in preparation for the Common People Dance Eisteddfod.

“It is a true story of 26 years ago,” Ms Waters says. “I didn’t get into my school rock eisteddfod, so I really wanted to attract people who haven’t danced for a long time or maybe people who have never danced who want to get up in a group and have that theatrical experience.”

Ms Waters says the event has been created for all ages and abilities as a less serious take on the usually competitive dance world.

“It will attract a nostalgic feel. The rule of the competition is you can bribe the judges and you sabotage the other team. It’s a bit of a fend off of all those highly competitive dance competitions and they

As an accomplished international theatre maker, Ms Waters found herself craving the world of theatre after becoming a mother five years ago. She now runs the Common People Dance Project at four locations across Brisbane.

“I had been touring internationally at festivals, and nationally,” Ms Waters says.

“After I had my son, I was a lot more planted in Brisbane and missed that touring and thought, how can I do what I

do and still be here in Brisbane and look after my boy? I was really frustrated of that competitive nature and elite dance world.

“I could feel this energy that community people wanted a chance to perform. I thought, maybe I can bring all my theatrical skills and all my director skills to the general public and give them a taste and chance to get up on stage in sparkly costumes and get that amazing feeling.

Registrations for term two, which begins on July 14, are open at horizonfestival.com.au.

Horizon Festival is the Sunshine Coast’s premier arts and cultural celebration with 10 days and nights of music, visual art, theatre, dance, film, spoken word, comedy and more.

Now in its sixth year, the iconic festival will run from August 27 to September 5 and Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the festival is an exciting celebration of the arts.

NEWS and Mr Anderson is keen to emphasise it’s a unisex game – although only a few women have joined in over the years.

For the men who’ve played together for more than 20 years, watching each other’s children grow from babies to adults, it has provided camaraderie and respite from daily life.

“It has been a really important structure in my life where I can laugh and banter,” Mr Anderson says. “Whatever your week has been like, it’s like, no worries, it’s Wednesday afternoon.

“These relationships I have with a number of these people only exist on the volleyball court. My entire relationship with them has just been playing games, like a little boy. It’s a different relationship I have than with people in other areas of my life.

It’s all good, it’s all fun.”

21 years but who’s counting?

It’s light on rules and doesn’t cost a cent, but this social volleyball game has endured for two decades, providing fun, friendship and social connection along the way. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

hey come from all walks of life and when they meet every Wednesday at Maleny Showground, they are not IT professionals, dentists, musicians, artists, landcare workers or health workers. They’re just a bunch of blokes, keen to smash a ball over a net and let off some steam.

For more than two decades, a haphazard group of men has played a weekly game of social volleyball that has provided fun, exercise, stress relief, social connection and a sense of belonging.

Adrian Anderson is a UX designer and co-owner of popular Maleny cafe, Shotgun Espresso. He traces the roots of the game back to 1997 when he moved from Brisbane to permaculture community Crystal Waters and missed playing sport.

“I tracked down a ball and a volleyball net and we just started playing,” he says.

“There was also a game going in Witta, but we moved to Maleny around 2000 and we’ve been playing there every Wednesday afternoon ever since.

“It was really just a bunch of people

There are few rules, but the spirit of the game is paramount. It’s fine to argue over whether someone reached over the net or touched the centreline, but if you’re too vociferous, it’s not in the spirit of the game.

“The spirit of the game is ephemeral; it’s formless,” Mr Anderson says, tongue firmly in cheek. “It’s like saying what is chi?

It’s the life force that binds us all.

“We don’t use indoor or beach volleyball rules. We have our own set of rules that is a combination of both.”

The teams are formed by creating an even mix of players with varying abilities

and if someone new joins, they’ll be taken aside and shown a few basic skills before being let loose. Shoes are optional, no money changes hands and random campers at the showground often join in.

“It was very rough in the early days,” Mr Anderson says. “We were all over the place.

Our skills were very ordinary. Occasionally, you’ll get a person who will be the worst person ever to play the game. We’ll go, what are we going to do about them? That was the case with Mikey. We had several conversations about what we were going to do about Mikey. He had no inbuilt coordination whatsoever. For seven years straight, at our end of year awards, he won the ‘most improved player’ award. Now, he’s one of the better players.”

A report by Beyond Blue (Men’s Social Connectedness, 2014) revealed 63 per cent of men agreed it’s normal for men to lose touch with their friends as they get older. INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS The engaging stories by Eumundi children’s book author and illustrator Philip Bunting are out of this world. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

I

t isn’t every day your work falls into the hands of an astronaut and is catapulted 400 kilometres into space.

But this is the story of Eumundi author and illustrator Philip Bunting.

This year, his book Give Me Some Space! was featured as the National Simultaneous Storytime story and read to thousands of Australian children from aboard the International Space Station by NASA astronaut Shannon Walker.

“Give Me Some Space! is a book about a kid named Una who is fascinated by space.

The story follows her mission to find life away from earth with the help of her goldfish Neil,” he says.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an initiative of the Australian Libraries and Information Association (ALIA) and each year, an Australian author is selected to read their book to as many primary and preschool-aged children around the country as possible, simultaneously.

“The goal was to reach over one million kids. We ended up with over 1.98 million registered readers in 2021,” Mr Bunting says. “This year, ALIA put their heads together with the publisher of the book, Scholastic Australia, to give NSS a little

his books published in more than 30 countries. “My first book was called Mopoke, which was originally created as a gift for my daughter’s first birthday in 2016,” Mr Bunting tells My Weekly Preview.

“I had no intention of seeking professional publication, but my better half, Laura, encouraged me to send the manuscript to a few publishers. I think I sent out eight rather cheeky cold-call emails, and within a fortnight, I had eight offers to publish. Things moved pretty quickly from there.”

As a father of three young children – Leo, eight, Florence, six, and Arthur, three – Mr Bunting says he finds reading with rather than reading to his children the best way to engage with them “in the most meaningful way”.

“Picture books in particular provide the very best platform for positive and productive interaction between the reader and child,” he says. “They allow you to ask

questions, explore ideas, be silly and have fun together.

“Again, as a parent, I’ve found that there are very few activities that allow for such a focused opportunity to bond with your kids.”

Mr Bunting, who is originally from England, says when children are read to they begin to positively associate books with learning and fun and he likes knowing he is helping that process through his books. “Being able to provide this platform for intergenerational engagement is the thing I love most about writing.

“Ultimately, I hope to do my little bit to help parents engage with their little ones and encourage a love of learning in those being read to.”

Mr Bunting has “no idea” where his inspiration comes from to write and illustrate his books. “My books are an odd conflation of thousands of ideas and interests. Each book starts with a simple idea, which can typically be expressed in one sentence.

“For me, the book is simply the vehicle for the idea – the words and [illustrations] are the Trojan Horse that deliver it. Or more sweetly, the spoon full of sugar.”

Central banks remain resistant to raising official interest rates, but this does not preclude them from taking steps towards slowing the degree of monetary stimulus by reducing the pace of asset purchases (tapering) if the economic outlook becomes decidedly more optimistic.

We expect in the next six months there will be further discussion around tapering.

In our view, tapering in the US could begin by the end of this year or early next year.

In July, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will discuss whether to extend its own quantitative easing program, due to expire in September. Given the recent strong economic data reported there is a risk the RBA might not renew the program.

The major developed market central banks have maintained a stance of lower-for-longer interest rates even as the world emerges from the pandemic, with

most concurring that further evidence is needed that their economies can sustainably reach their employment and inflation goals before withdrawing stimulus. This, however, does not mean central banks cannot start tightening monetary policy by other means.

Reduced asset purchases by central banks will feed less liquidity into the system, slowing money supply growth and, in effect, the rate of economic growth too.

Furthermore, keeping official cash rates steady while tapering asset purchases will steepen the yield curve.

Equities can still move higher during an initial tapering phase. During the 2013-14 taper tantrum, US equities saw periodic corrections of five to six per cent, but overall the market continued an upward trend.

Within equities, we found the value/ cyclical sectors performed best during the last tapering event in 2013-14. If we use price/earnings-to-growth ratios and dividend yields as a measure of value, the top four value sectors today would be industrials, energy, financials and materials.

Looking towards Nambour’s future, Rhonda Billet is encouraging local businesses to jump on board the town’s new brand

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT Nambour’s businesses community is filled with optimism about the new direction the town is taking. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

fter more than 20 years of campaigning to bring a new lease of life to the region, Nambour locals are excited for its future after the launch of a new brand identity.

The ‘I am Nambour’ brand has been developed as part of the Nambour Economic Transition Strategy (NETS) and embodies the diversity, resilience and pride of the town’s business community. The new look will allow local businesses to market under one consistent look and feel, to encourage investment and pride in the town.

For two decades, resident Simone Pearce has been championing to have the “forgotten town” put back on the map and is pleased with the rebrand outcome.

“It’s a great movement,” she says. “It vindicates what I’ve been banging on about for the past 20 years, that Nambour is this diamond in the rough.”

With the Nambour sugar mill closing in 1970, Sunshine Plaza opening in 1994 and Sunshine Coast University Hospital opening in 2017, Ms Pearce says there has been a history of people and business being diverted from Nambour.

She was part of the first attempt to rebrand Nambour 18 years ago through Nambour Alliance and Nambour Futures.

“That was the first attempt council made to do a rebranding. They actually had some funding to do some streetscaping down on Anne Street. That was the start of a journey that saw significant efforts to try to garner support in and around the town for the community to take ownership and revitalise and revamp the town.”

Ms Pearce is the chair on the board of Boldbridge Group, which manages Nambour RSL. She says the rebrand is a chance for the town to take control of its future. “I live locally and want to go to Nambour for nights out and different events and for my kids sport, and to do that I want it to be a vibrant place.

“I want to be able to think I’ve got lots of options and it’s a place preferable to spend some time rather than go elsewhere.

“It comes down to people having confidence in local business and making a concerted effort to keep their business in the town. It’s not going to be vibrant and … successful unless we patronise it and we go to the businesses that are there and we run businesses that are there.”

Living a breathing all things Nambour, chair of Nambour Retailers Rhonda Billet is encouraging businesses to jump on board.

“This is our opportunity to tell the world that Nambour has so much to offer,” she says. “We are incredibly lucky in Nambour to not only have a proactive community but we’re also seeing all levels of government coming together for this plan. Sunshine Coast Council is invested, as well as state government representatives, and our federal government representatives.”

Reimagine Nambour facilitator Kerry Brown says the committee is excited to be a part of the engagement process.

YANDINA PROGRAM TACKLES WASTE Cafe food waste is given a new lease of life at Yandina Community Gardens. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

Yandina Community Gardens initiative is seeing a record amount of food waste across the town being diverted from landfill and into nutrient-rich compost.

The Food Loop program began nearly 11 months ago and in that time 20 tonnes of food waste has been used to create more than 10,000 litres of compost ready to grow more food.

Yandina Community Gardens project officer Emily Boyd says food waste is taken from restaurants, cafes, grocery stores and coffee roaster across Yandina.

“There are 13 different businesses on board the program, which is the majority of food businesses in Yandina,” Ms Boyd says.

“The businesses love being part of the program and the 20-tonne diversion is a real community achievement.”

Ms Boyd says food waste is a major contributor to Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions and composting is a wonderful way to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

“Gas emissions from Sunshine Coast Council’s landfills account for approximately 80 per cent of the total

Unfortunately, the program is at risk of ending at the end of June if Yandina Community Gardens is unable to secure further funding.

“We are pushing with council at the moment for the program to continue, but nothing’s been finalised as of yet,” Ms Boyd says.

CALOUNDRA ARTIST MARKET BACK FOR 2021 The highly successful Caloundra Artist Market is back for 2021 after launching in 2020 as an opportunity for local artists to gain community exposure.

ST ANDREW’S TEAM UP FOR THE CHALLENGE Mr Austin has competed in the challenge seven times and taken home the winning trophy four times.

“I’ve been really lucky to have been a part of some great teams over the years and the last three years in particular have been made up of a core group of students who have been unbelievably determined to push themselves to the absolute limit,” he says.

As part of the challenge, St Andrew’s Anglican College raised more than $15,000 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, an organisation that runs life skills programs for Australian teenagers, and this is the 12th year the school has entered the Kokoda Challenge.

Teamwork, resilience and mental strength are all needed to win one of Australia’s toughest team endurance events, not once but four times.

More than 250 St Andrew’s Anglican College staff, students and parents recently competed in the gruelling Kokoda Challenge event, with students as young as nine through to 18 participating in the 15-kilometre, 30-kilometre and 48-kilometre challenges.

Teams took out the overall win in all three distances. Winners included teacher Alex Austin and his team of four students – Harry, Luca, Cory and Jack – who broke the 48-kilometre record by 20 minutes in a time of six hours, 19 minutes.

MY POLICE COLUMN With online gaming being a big part of many young people’s lives, it is important for young gamers and parents to be aware of the risks of virtual interactions, including the dangers of grooming.

While gaming can be fun and have positive social benefits, the Queensland Police Service’s specialised unit investigating internet-facilitated child exploitation sees the dark side of the internet. Much of what it investigates stems from children being tricked by adults into taking and sharing explicit photos or videos of themselves.

Our message to young people is that it is not your fault and help is available.

What can young people do?

• Be cautious about who you’re interacting with online. Predators ask personal questions and attempt to become friendly quickly. They may try to contact you

frequently, in different ways.

• Sharing personal information or images puts you at risk. Avoid using real names, phone numbers, or sharing photos, passwords or personal information.

• If something goes wrong: stay calm, take screenshots, block the person and report inappropriate contact. Talk to parents or a trusted adult.

• Online grooming should be reported to police. Image-based abuse can be reported to eSafety.gov.au.

• Kids Helpline can offer support.

What can parents do?

• Have open, regular and non-judgmental conversations about who your child might be interacting with online.

• Educate yourself about what games and online chat services your child is using.

• Where possible keep all internet-capable devices in common family areas.

• Check privacy settings on accounts and consider whether the chat function enabled on games is necessary. The eSafety Guide provides practical information.

• Teach your child to be alert to signs of grooming and inappropriate contact.

• Report grooming to police.

Latest scam a grift not a gift Police are asking the community to remain vigilant and remember that no government organisation, particularly the Australian

Taxation Office (ATO) will seek payment via gift cards.

Police around the state have received a number of reports about ‘scammers’ calling members of the public and threatening arrest warrants if they refuse to repay a tax debt. In many cases, the victims have been told to purchase large sums of gift cards as a form of payment.

Police in Maroochydore were notified recently of a 67-year-old local man who lost $12,000 to this type of scam after he received a threatening email and subsequent phone call. The scammer directed him to purchase gift cards and provide the details of the cards.

The scammer will try to pressure you into paying immediately by threatening you with arrest, or say they will send police to your house if you refuse.

Scammers will also send emails claiming you owe money for things like a speeding fine, tax office debt or unpaid bill.

Scammers are quick-minded and fastacting and will try anything!

If you believe you may have been scammed or have information concerning a scam, report this activity to Scamwatch.

ROAD UPGRADE Work has now begun to upgrade the intersection of Arthur Street and Bowman Road in Caloundra. Significant safety improvements will be made for the 15,000 road users who enter and cross the intersection daily.

The upgrade will include traffic signals, cycle lanes, pedestrian and cycle crossings, and footpaths to make it easier and safer for all users. Divisional councillor Terry Landsberg says he is looking forward to seeing the intersection upgraded to make it more approachable and accessible.

“Considering the location and close proximity to schools and sports clubs, it’s especially important we provide safe crossing points for those who ride or walk,” Cr Landsberg says. “Residents have expressed safety concerns and I am pleased council is making these important upgrades.”

The upgrade is being funded under Sunshine Coast Council’s annual capital works program, with construction expected to be completed by September, weather and conditions permitting. The intersection will remain open during construction and commuters should allow extra time if travelling through the area.

Use the council’s free online tool, Roads Hub, to plan and be aware of road works or other events that may affect traffic.

Raffle supporting Yandina school children Yandina Masonic Centre is fundraising for reader packs for Yandina State School. The centre has been told the school is the lowest in priority in the Sunshine Coast area due to its low socio-demographic population.

As a result, the school provides lunch packs each day to up to 80 children, and daily showers and clean uniforms, as well as laundering their clothes. Raffle tickets, with locally donated products, are available at 20 Yandina businesses, with a stall outside Yandina Bakery on Friday from 9am to 1pm and the IGA at the same time on Saturdays.

ANIMAL MAGNETISM Comparing people to animals is a questionable, ancient habit. Cute animals double as pet names for children or lovers, with terms like kitten and baby bear. They are not my cup of tea, but I get the appeal.

We use animal descriptors for people who have desirable human traits: brave people are lion-hearted and the perceptive ones are eagle-eyed.

Many of us use animal similes in our everyday life. We might be hungry as a wolf, strong as an ox, busy as a bee, happy as a pig in mud. Some people swim like fish and some are like rabbits… at other times.

We horse around, can be dog tired or a lone wolf. We squirrel away money and are bird-brained when we forget something.

Smart people are wise owls and those who follow blindly are sheep. We can be chicken if something is scary and are rats when we reveal someone else’s secret.

Being called catty or bitchy or swanning about seems to be reserved exclusively for women, as are parallels with cows and toads. And if a woman has a much younger lover, they are a cougar.

We are animals, of course, but we are apex predators – smarter than the average

bear, if you will. We have rational thought and future fears, but presume other creatures don’t. We certainly have a modicum of rat cunning and we ape civility.

We control the structures of our environment, and have powers of reason, choice and self-control.

An idea seeded in ancient times by philosophers including Plato and Aristotle, and developed in the Middle Ages, suggests there is a hierarchy in nature and we are all but top dogs.

According to ‘scala naturae’, human beings are a step above animals with only god and the angels above us. Third rock from the sun, third rung on the ladder – we are sitting pretty whichever way you spin it.

But much of the time when we compare humans to other animals, it is as a slur and that has caused some fur to fly.

In January, the international vegan lobby group PETA pleaded with people to stop using animal insults. PETA also asked respected resources such as the Oxford, Colins and Merriam-Webster dictionaries to remove harmful definitions.

For example, Merriam-Webster gives one pig definition as “a dirty, gluttonous, or repulsive person” and snake can be “a worthless or treacherous fellow”.

But PETA itself also used animals in insults, including a campaign in recent years that featured a very fat woman in a bikini with the slogan: ‘Save the whales.

Lose the blubber: go vegetarian’.

So maybe they are allowed to use animal insults but regular people are not.

Their argument is that language should progress, just as our culture does.

In their world, every dog has its day and they hope you can teach an old dog new tricks.

GOVERNMENT BULLYING

A HUMANE WAY TO DIE

Why are we surprised at the way NightQuarter was made an example of by our government’s ‘caring’ attitude? (“They haven’t done this to anyone else – shock closure of NightQuarter, My Weekly Preview, June 17). We had plenty of time to push back against the bullying when the whole pandemic thing first started.

When the media were first made aware of the shocking mortality rate, why did no one point out the discrepancy between what the government was telling us and what the CDC was saying: that 94 per cent of the deaths reported had at least one or more serious comorbidities?

We now have the whole country in such a state of panic and believing the only thing that can solve the problem is more governmental control… The media could certainly be a significant factor in stopping this non-stop COVID alarmism by doing independent research and calling out the government’s bullying. This would go, hopefully, a long way in curbing any more government abuse similar to what we have witnessed at NightQuarter.

Saturday, June 19 marked two years since voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws took effect in Victoria. Those and similar laws have been subjected to misleading scare campaigns by opponents. They use language like “state sanctioned killing” while ignoring that terminally ill people seeking VAD are already dying and want their life to end on their terms. VAD does not cause extra death, but eliminates a lot of suffering.

Opponents make unsubstantiated claims about people being coerced into seeking VAD. In the 18 months from June 2019 to December 2020, a total of 224 terminally ill people used Victoria’s laws to end their lives at the time of their choosing to avoid intolerable suffering. Opponents fail to acknowledge that voluntary assisted dying is just that – voluntary. If they don’t want to seek access to VAD that’s their choice. But nobody – our 93 MPs included – should ever deny others a choice. All VAD supporters should tell their state MP to vote for the VAD Bill when it reaches the Queensland Parliament in September.

hat about the rental crisis on the Sunshine Coast?

Sure, we are a region that is on the lips of many Australians if you look at the current statistics on tourism and property numbers. Then on top of that we have groups of people on the Coast that don’t want any more development, which I find amazingly selfish. I particularly find that attitude very singular when I see more and more folk camping in their cars around the Coast. I see it at work and I see it where I live and rather than judge those people, I would rather try and help them.

It is a strange situation. People want to live here, our kids need jobs, but there appears to be little or no rentals available and the squeaky wheels around the place don’t want any more development.

Then there is the tiny block scenario, where more than two cars and a visitor clogs the street up. Then there is a push against mass transit, but if there was better public transport, visitors would not have to drive their cars to visit the people on the little blocks. So I am not sure what the council is actually supposed to do. One

thing I do know is they better hurry up, as no matter what side of the fence you are on there is one certainty: people are coming and our population is going to accelerate.

On a lighter note, I read the other day about a company that is addressing our space issue by offering a different type of holiday in Tiny Away Houses, mini holiday homes in Palmwoods, which are a great idea and hopefully it goes well. It reminds me of when I was a kid just down the road in Eudlo and talked my dad into building me a tiny little timber house with a veranda, a tin roof and an outside fireplace.

It was awesome.

The first night after he finished, I cooked spuds in the fire, ate them, went to bed and heard what I thought was a possum or something on the roof and I raced back to the safety of the house, never to return at night again. It became my day residence – what a sook.

I might have to try the tiny away house to heal my trauma. Hopefully, the possums will be tiny like the houses and I’ll only be a tiny bit frightened. A bit like the small minds of some people that don’t want anything to change?

he Swedes have given us some very good things in life – ABBA tops the list. But I love Ikea and meatballs and Swiss rolls, too.

Also, Sweden is one of the original homes of the Vikings.

My husband is half-Swiss and I like the whole of him and it was also a smart Swede who invented Spotify. However, I was horrified to hear of their inclusion of Vegemite and musk sticks to their Disgusting Food Museum.

Okay, I have just thrown a lot of information at you, so let’s unpack this together before we wage a war defending our Vegemite and our pink lollies to the death. Yes, Sweden is home to this museum that houses 80 of the world’s most so-called disgusting foods and a few drinks as well.

Have your sick bag ready as I reel off some of the delicacies on display in this mindblowing museum.

First, we have whale testicle beer, maggot-infested cheese from Sardinia, mouse wine, roasted guinea pigs from Peru and Durian, that stinky fruit from Thailand.

Hungry? No, me neither.

The Swedes have also included musk

sticks and I feel insulted that the lolly I grew up with is included in this hall of horrors.

The musk stick is as Aussie as a chicken schnitzel or a pair of thongs. I remember as a kid, Mum would give us a few dollars to share and we would ride on our pushbikes to buy musk sticks and a Sunny Boy to drink. The sweet smell of those hot pink sticks of goodness still makes me smile. It has been reported Woolworths alone sells 24-million musk sticks each year.

And now, the big one: Vegemite. How could Vegemite be added to the Disgusting Food Museum? I know it is a polariser, but the only thing in my mind that is better than a piece of Vegemite on toast is two pieces of Vegemite on toast. It is always my meal of choice when I am sick or need some quiet time with a cup of tea.

The best meal of my life was not the crepe I ate in front of the the Eiffel Tower when I turned 40 or the fresh prawns at our wedding. It was the Vegemite toast my sister served me in the labour ward after I had each of my babies. It was life giving and soul hugging. And for those of you who prefer Promite over Vegemite, well you can just go and live in Sweden.

FINANCIAL INJECTION FOR STATE’S SCHOOLS Education was a winner in this year’s state budget, which was handed down last week.

A record $15.3 billion investment in school and early childhood education will deliver for Queensland children, students and tradies.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says almost $1.9 billion in infrastructure spending will maintain, renew and build new facilities, including 10 new schools and other facilities supporting more than 4100 jobs across the state.

“The 2021-22 education budget is a down payment on Queensland’s future,” the premier says. “This is creating jobs to drive our economic recovery post-COVID, and longer term, this is an investment in Queensland’s future workforce and leaders in our schools and early childhood centres.”

The education budget includes $913.7 million over seven years for 10 new southeast Queensland schools to open in 2023 and 2024 in growth corridors.

Four high schools will also be built, including one in Palmwoods. The Coast’s rapidly expanding communities in Aura will also benefit from a new school, with $34 million in 2021-22 out of a $61.6 million total spend to construct a new state

primary school in Caloundra South.

Recently opened new schools in Palmview and Baringa will also get major injections of money for their next stages.

“The budget also includes $202.9 million invested over four years and $64 million in ongoing annual funding to support the continued provision of universal access to kindergarten for Queensland children,” education minister Grace Grace says. “This means funding for kindergartens for 2021-22 of $187.1 million.

“That’s going to mean Queensland families will continue to be able to access affordable, quality kindergarten programs no matter what their life circumstance.”

LANDCARE GRANT RECIPIENTS NAMED The next generation of environmental champions across the Sunshine Coast is set to benefit from the largest ever round of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.

Several primary schools and early learning centres in the region have been awarded grants of up to $1000 to help local students enhance native habitats, improve sustainable food production and recycling or support waste management projects at their school.

This year’s grants also placed an emphasis on the importance of bees and pollinators in the environment with applicants offered extra funding of up to $500 for projects that directly support the conservation of Australia’s bee population.

Recipients included Beerwah State School, Wildlings Forest School, Palmview State Primary School, Chancellor State College, Eudlo State School, St Andrew’s Anglican College in Peregian Springs and Coolum State School, among others.

Almost $2 million worth of grants will be provided to more than 1600 schools and centres. Landcare Australia CEO Shane Norrish says, “The Junior Landcare Program recognises the vital role young Australians play in caring for the land, their environment and other natural resources.”

One provisional psychologist, Peter, says COVID-19 is generating feelings of isolation and loneliness during lockdowns due to physical distancing rules. Physical distancing conflicts with our need to be with people we love or want to spend time with. Mental health issues associated with loneliness and isolation include depression, anxiety, stress, schizophrenia, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and suicide. Connecting with other people is very important to our wellbeing.

NDIS OVERHAUL ‘PENNY WISE, POUND FOOLISH’

Ms Reynolds is adamant the changes will make the NDIS sustainable in the long term.

However, Prof Bonyhady is concerned attempts to save money on administrative costs will create a false economy.

“An absolute foundation of the scheme is best quality planning and if that takes a little bit longer and costs a little bit more, it actually contributes

to the sustainability of the scheme,” he says.

He adds the “robo-planning” proposal had fuelled enormous outrage, disquiet and unanimous opposition.

“The government needs to go back to the drawing board,” he says. “It also needs to have a much more open dialogue with the disability community and engage in real consultation and real co-design.”

n architect of the National Disability Insurance Scheme is maintaining pressure against a proposed overhaul of the program.

Bruce Bonyhady, who was the inaugural chairman of the NDIS, is aghast the federal government remains committed to introducing an assessment model universally slammed by the disability community.

He believes the independent assessment policy will undermine the scheme.

“It cannot possibly identify individual needs,” Professor Bonyhady told ABC radio recently.

The government wants to replace typical NDIS support packages – based on funding approved for participants with similar circumstances – to personalised budgets based on independent assessments.

The disability community fears independent assessments are nothing more than a cynical cost-cutting exercise, shifting decisions on support packages from medical experts to anonymous bureaucrats.

T

here’s more great news coming out of AVID’s Harmony estate with a special Stage 20 premium, dress-circle land release to be formally announced next month.

The over 500 square-metre lots will overlook open space and parks. AVID Property Group’s Queensland general manager Bruce Harper says this release is in response to the demand by many people wanting bigger blocks to fit bigger homes.

How this new land release in the 353

hectare estate is offered is yet to be determined. This week’s first-time ballot system for buyers with bank pre-approval for 31 lots in Stage 20B may be one way the premium land releases are open to the public.

Up to this point the lots have been sold to first come, first served buyers. This has meant buyers taking radical steps to be at the front of the queue on the day the lots are released, even camping out overnight in front of the sales office.

Mr Harper says the more equitable ballot system for buyers, particularly ones from interstate, will “give the opportunity for a broader audience to acquire land”.

Within two hours of the current release being announced, AVID had received 25 applications from qualified people. Mr Harper says application numbers could reach upwards of 300, or more.

“This will give us further information that we can take to the council and say, ‘you need to step up, you need to get more approvals out more quickly’,” he says.

Land releases in this inter-generational living environment are completely reliant on Sunshine Coast Council approval.

“Our approval process is slower through local government than it would be through state government process, and when in these times when we have had incredibly strong demand over the last 12 months, slightly before HomeBuilder came out, and subsequent to HomeBuilder grants ending, we have continued to have unprecedented demand with customers at each release camping out overnight in order to buy blocks of land,” Mr Harper says.

Mooloolaba surfer Keely Andrew is on track for a career-best season, with the prospect of surfing Pipeline in Hawaii causing a few jitters. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

M

ooloolaba’s Keely Andrew says she’s surfing smarter than ever before, midway through this year’s world tour. The 26-year-old is in the midst of her fifth campaign on the sport’s top tier, and it’s proved to be a breakthrough one.

“In years past, I haven’t had this kind of consistency,” she says.

“I feel like I’m probably surfing tactically better than I’ve ever surfed. I’m really happy with how it’s going.”

Andrew is in on track for a career-best season. She was ninth overall on the standings after five of nine events, with her previous best year coming in 2017 (11th).

She was scheduled to compete this weekend at Surf Ranch, a California wave pool from American surfing legend Kelly Slater. It’s the only artificial wave location on the schedule.

“I enjoy it there. It’s challenging in

different ways to ocean surfing,” Andrew says. “Strategy changes a lot. I think it’s a good place to get a solid result, without having to be in the water with other surfers.”

Andrew is intent on making an impact in the remaining events, at Mexico, Tahiti and two in California.

“I really want to finish strongly,” she says. “If I can continue to get results, I’ll at least re-qualify (for next year’s tour).”

The top nine surfers on the end of season rankings will automatically earn berths for 2022.

“So, it’s really quite difficult,” she says. “I need a couple more big results. I’d love to be in the top five at the end of the year but if I just focus on single results at each event, then it will make it easier and uncomplicated.”

Andrew also has one eye on the opening event for next year, after it was

announced the season will start with a men’s and women’s stop at iconic Pipeline in Hawaii. It will be the first time the women have a designated Championship Tour event at the famous break, which boasts large, powerful surf.

“It’s super huge (news),” Andrew says.

“It’s a really big thing for the women.”

The world’s best female surfers competed at Pipeline in December, when the Maui Pro was relocated there midcompetition, after a man was killed by a shark at Honolua Bay. “Last year, with the unfortunate events, there was a forced change (of venue),” Andrew says. “But it’s exciting to have it on the schedule next year and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m excited to see the girls in action there and it is what the sport needs to progress.”

Andrew has had limited time in the water at Pipeline and she would like to become more accustomed to the large waves before the event is held.

“It’s scary for me. I’ve surfed it once when it was really small,” she says. “I’ve been there and seen it (big) but it (big wave surfing) is something I have to work on. I need to spend more time out there, so I feel more comfortable.

“It’s about progressing and if I can take baby steps in the right direction, then the outcome should be a positive one.”

Andrew said she’s enjoyed some great encounters with fellow Sunshine Coaster Isabella Nichols this year.

The latter has made an impression in her rookie season, climbing to eighth place overall, highlighted by a runner-up result in Newcastle.

It is considered a ‘home away from home’ in recent years and Lightning players, coaches and staff have ensured the two teams have been warmly welcomed.

Head coach Kylee Byrne says the team was on the same return flight as Melbourne Vixens after Round 7 and took to the opportunity to reach out.

“We flew home with the Vixens from Sydney and we certainly checked in,” Byrne says. “It was nice to spend time with them at the airport and at this end to make sure they are well looked after.

“They know if they can’t be in Melbourne, the Coast is a place they want to be – but they are quite happy, knowing they have two more weeks and then hopefully will return home.

“We’ll continue reaching out, a couple are dog lovers, so our players are inviting them over to play with the dogs and go for walks on the beach.”

SURF REPORT

Well, how great have the conditions been? No need to answer as I think we all know. I’ve been seeing a lot of playful dolphins in the surf recently.

This weekend seems to be looking the goods yet again, so hopefully you get amongst it.

Still catching some very nice snapper, pearl perch and mixed reef fish on both the inner and wider reefs.

Floating baits in the shallow worked in the burley trail working a treat. Live bait has been definitely the go on the wider grounds. Maroochy and Caloundra still the best for flathead and the Mooloolah for bream and gar in the basin for our rivers, while the Noosa system has been a bit of a hot spot for trevally, mainly Woods Bay. Beaches are still a little quiet for tailor but a few have been caught nearer the river mouths at dusk. The local dams have gone quiet due to the cool change but a few good bass have been reported in Lake McDonald and Borumba. Slow-worked soft plastic lures working the best.
