This year, the Immanuel Arts Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary and we take the opportunity to highlight milestones and note the people whose contributions ensured its continuity.

The number of recent landmark anniversaries on the Coast show the early 1980s as a time when the population hit a point that demanded increased social infrastructure and social change. As the people came, so did construction. For instance, The Events Centre was officially opened in 1980. On February 4, 1980, 153 hectares now known as Corbould Park was purchased by the council for $153,000 and the racecourse opened in1985.

While some things grew, others closed.

In 1981 butter production ceased at the Maleny Butter Factory. The same year, the Australian Surf Life Savers Association

allowed women to gain their Bronze Medallion and participate as active surf lifesavers – it made a big difference for women in our coastal area.

As Buderim resident and former Immanuel Lutheran College Arts Festival convenor, Mrs Kay Oliver spoke to me last week and recalled the festival’s beginnings, she noted how the festival’s growth paralleled that of the Sunshine Coast.

Despite last year, the 2021festival, with its vast array of artists and community participation, promises to set another creative benchmark for the Coast’s arts sector. And who knows, perhaps in another 40 years, someone else will make the same observation as Mrs Oliver.

ONE SOLUTION TO THE COAST’S HOUSING CRISIS A Sunshine Coast company has come up with two prototypes for hi-tech tiny homes to address the growing homelessness and housing affordability crisis. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

T

he tiny house movement is booming, but Jimmy Hirst of Polkadot Tiny Homes on the Sunshine Coast says builders are charging more to build a tiny home than they do to build a standard home.

“Builders are charging way too much for a tiny house,” Mr Hirst says. “They’re charging $4000 per square metre to build a tiny house, but if you look at the price of an average house and the space in it, it’s around $1000 per square metre.”

Mr Hirst has built a hi-tech tiny house on wheels that he has been living in for two years off grid and aims to begin rolling out this prototype, called the Polkadot (pictured above), for under $50,000. Most tiny houses cost $80,000 to $110,000.

The Polkadot is 6.5 metres long and 3.7 metres high – a little bigger than a shipping container – generates its own power and

water, composts its own waste and could pave the way for tiny houses of the future.

Mr Hirst is also building an even smaller prototype called the Living Free tiny house (pictured above right).

“It’s going to be a ten-foot by eight-foot box, built very well and able to be joined to others if you want more space,” he says.

The larger Polkadot requires a large 4WD to transport it, whereas the smaller prototype will only require an SUV. What separates the Polkadot from other tiny houses is the level of built-in technology. Designed with senior, single women in mind, it features five security cameras that can be viewed from anywhere in the world, Crimsafe doors, a wifi cupboard containing a broadband modem, a smart home hub with Google Assistant and DVR security system and a smart lighting system that recreates scenes such

as sunrises and sunsets.

Its sustainability features include an air-to-water generator that pulls 33 litres of water out of the air a day, 2.4 kilowatts of solar panels on the roof, with a fourkilowatt inverter and four kilowatts worth of batteries. It also has a rechargeable vacuum cleaner, a full size 12-volt fridge, full gas stove and oven, full size laundry sink, full size shower and composting toilet.

Nasty toilet smells are one of the downsides of tiny homes and its a problem Mr Hirst is aware of.

While Mr Hirst is currently paying some friends $80 per week to park his tiny house on their property just outside Maleny, he says there are other options available.

“If you understand the town plan the building codes, you can do pretty much whatever you like, but you need to do your homework or have someone like us to do

the homework for you. There are safety aspects, legal aspects and neighbours to consider.

“I’ve generally gone onto properties where I know the owners, but there are tonnes of opportunities for people with tiny houses to park where they want to.”

Sunshine Coast residents concerned about the current homelessness crisis are advertising their properties on social media for people who are in need of somewhere to set up a tiny home or caravan.

Sunshine Coast Council specifies that vehicles permanently converted to tiny houses are subject to the same planning, building and plumbing laws that apply to a permanent building. However, a vehicle capable of being registered, such as a caravan or trailer, is not classed as a tiny house. Those wishing to use a vehicle for temporary accommodation need to obtain a council local law permit and the temporary use is subject time limits.

40 years of the Immanuel Arts Festival The Immanuel Arts Festival is the largest community arts event on the Sunshine Coast and has showcased the region’s artistic talent for 4 decades. The Festival proudly promotes visual, creative and performance art and is held each year in May at Immanuel Lutheran College. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

any annual Sunshine Coast events held over the past 40 years follow a familiar story of humble beginnings to contemporary success. Some more than others have displayed a longevity that has seen them woven into the historical fabric of modern Coast life. One of these is the Immanuel Lutheran Arts Festival.

This year, as testament to its powerful community connection, the Arts Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary. In recognition of this, we look back at some of the event’s milestones, the people who were part of the journey and include a few first-hand anecdotes from key organisers.

In 1981, the first Immanuel Arts Festival was held in the college’s science room. It was a small gathering with a limited amount of artworks, however it rated as a first of its kind.

In the same year, Immanuel Arts organiser and parent Jan Leake-Jones described it as, “A major fundraiser for the school attracting lots of attention as the first such display on the Coast (in a school) other than the Nambour Show and SCAGS, for artists to showcase their work.

“SCAGS was above the council library in the Devere Gallery. Rotary, churches, and other charities soon latched onto this idea

as a means of fundraising.”

In those early days, the Arts Festival was part of Immanuel’s Spring Fair, Fruehlingsfest. In the college’s 1983 yearbook, it is noted in the Parents & Friends Community (P&F) report: “The P&F… has the opportunity of setting tradition and the Immanuel Arts Festival as one of the attractions of Fruehlingsfest is certainly a highlight of the College calenda.

The P&F has resolved to purchase one item of art from this annual event.”

In 1984, as part of Fruehlingsfest, an art gallery was placed in the Devotion Room exhibiting and selling works by noted artists. The community event’s profile grew with an appearance by Lady Flo BjelkePetersen to judge jams and sweets as well as presenting prizes to winners of the fun run. Brisbane’s top talkback radio personality, Ron Wade, was there to answer gardening questions. The event was a great success and raised $15,000.

Five years later, the joint event raised $29,000 and the Immanuel Arts Festival was opened by Premier Mike Ahern MLA. That year is remembered for the prestige of showing several Pro Hart paintings.

By the mid-1990s the Arts Festival was ready to spread it wings. Festival convenor for three years between 1995–1997, Mrs Kay

2008 committee members Megan Loveday, Lisa Duce and Fran Fuller Oliver recalls the decision to move from the science room to the college’s stadium.

Around the same time, Mrs Oliver says there was a focus on art and crafts, or cottage craft with a ‘rustic’ feel.

“For instance, in 1992 my friend and I entered [hand-made] cloth rag dolls and lined baskets,” she says. “That made way for a more sophisticated style.”

Mrs Oliver and her family have been Buderim residents for 40 years and she says she now points out how things have changed from what they were, to her grandchildren.

“In a way, the growth of the Arts Festival reflects the growth of the Coast,” she says.

She made plenty of memories during her time as convenor and she laughingly relates how she thought of that period each year as “a good diet”.

“I would always lose a few kilos running up and down the hill from the stadium to the office,” she says.

It was also a time of changing technology: “It was so exciting when we were given a laptop to use, and it saved so much time.”

When Mrs Oliver eventually retired from the position, the amount of work she had undertaken was acknowledged, when two people were employed to replace here.

“There was a fabulous team of women, it was hard work, but it was so enjoyable.

We’re still friends and if we see each in the street, we stop and chat about those times.”

In 2001, for the 20th anniversary, the event was given its own weekend in May, extended opening hours and a finale concert featuring the Ten Tenors. The following year it was renowned guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan.

The festival has grown from a small gathering with a limited number of artworks to today’s event which attracts more than 300 artists and 1000 pieces of art across many genres including painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture and creative. It is recognised as the largest community arts event on the Sunshine Coast and is proudly hosted by the Parents & Friends Community (P&F) of Immanuel Lutheran College.

Now, with an army of volunteers, generous sponsorship and hanging space over 2000 square metres, the event is of epic proportions.

A TURTLE’S WILD LIFE With World Turtle Day happening on May 23, SEA LIFE is hoping a storybook will help in its endeavours to care for sea turtles in the wild. Written and illustrated by Kirsty Esson – artist, turtle lover and SEA LIFE team member – the book tells the story of Iluka, a hatchling turtle that came into the care of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast. The story explores the dangers turtles face in the wild and how Iluka was cared for and monitored ahead of being released back into the wild. Iluka the Hybrid Hatchling will be for sale online and at the aquarium with 100 per cent of profits to go to registered charity the SEA LIFE Trust for conservation campaigns, scientific research and inspiring education – all in the name of the sea turtle. Following a successful campaign in Point Cartwright, Sunshine Coast Council will extend its pet education pop-ups to other locations to help the 51,400 registered dog owners understand their responsibilities. The campaign was held at Point Cartwright in April in response to complaints and to ensure dog owners knew their responsibilities while in public with their pet. “[In] May and June, council will hold pop-up education booths at Mudjimba, Twin Waters, Marcoola, Coolum, Currimundi Lake, Ballinger Beach and Golden Beach to promote owner responsibilities,” Councillor Winston Johnston says. NEXT-LEVEL GAMING FOR HONOURS STUDENTS Nine tech-minded University of the Sunshine Coast graduates are taking their game design degrees to the next level with research projects aiming to capture the imaginations of interactive theatre audiences. GROUNDBREAKING FIND AT USC Scientists at the University of the Sunshine Coast have found they can quadruple the immune response of farmed fish by adding powdered seaweed, called Asparagopsis, to their diet. The findings from a study, led by PhD candidate Valentin Thépot were recently published in the scientific journal Fish and Shellfish Immunology.

Mr Thépot says disease costs the global aquaculture sector more than $US6 billion each year, with some industries entirely wiped out by outbreaks. “This means that a seaweed-based feed additive could one day replace the use of veterinary drugs or antibiotics in aquaculture that can be detrimental to the environment, to animals and even to us as consumers.” The same seaweed has been found to reduce methane emissions in cows.

NEW NATURE PLAYGROUND AT FLINDERS Matthew Flinders Anglican College has created a new nature playground in its primary campus for students from Prep to Year 3. Flinders head of primary Trudi Edwards says the students have given the new playspace their stamp of approval. “Our students have wasted no time exploring their new pole home: climbing, running, jumping, crawling, sliding, swinging, digging, pumping water, balancing on rocks, and exploring the creek bed. he Sunshine Coast has the rare opportunity to create a new city – a new heart of the region. This month, in a public discussion a panel of experts will explore how transport is key to the region’s liveability.

The Design Series is a curated program of events provoking discussions and connections across key industry groups from the arts, architecture, digital, engineering, environment, landscape and planning sectors.

Design is a broad process and like many professions, too often it operates within its silos. The Design Series is an opportunity for different design practitioners to come together to explore the intersections of design in the context of the Sunshine Coast’s new city centre.

Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance (SCCA) is a partner, along with other peak industry groups, delivering the Design Series.

SCCA is all about connecting the dots to identify opportunities between creative practitioners (including artists, musicians and designers) and business, making The Design Series an important conversation for the organisation to be in.

At the heart of SCCA is advocating for the valuable contribution creative practitioners make to the region, both economically and socially. There’s a positive view of the need for art and culture to be part of the new city, but what does this look like and what could it deliver?

LITTLE CHARLI’S FAMILY THANK WISHLIST

I

t was a Friday afternoon nobody expected, but the Goodrich family will never forget it.

On February 5, The Goodrich’s two-year-old daughter Charli, suffered a collapsed lung which prompted an emergency helicopter flight from Kingaroy Hospital to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).

Charli’s mum Letisha Goodrich says in the week leading up to the hospital trip, there were no major warning signs and Charli was given the ‘all clear’ after multiple visits to the doctor.

“Charli’s health continued to deteriorate on the first night at SCUH and we learned she also had respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pneumonia,” Mrs Goodrich says.

Charli was put onto life-support as her little body started shutting down and was then flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) in Brisbane for critical care.

“Doctors later told us while Charli was on life support and in surgery at the Children’s Hospital that she was battling sepsis, which is an extreme immune response to an infection and can be fatal.

“It’s a frightening sight to see your daughter with all these tubes attached to her and knowing there is very little my husband and I could do.”

Charli spent a week in critical care hooked up to life-saving machines to keep her heart beating, and a further two weeks on a machine to support her lungs.

On March 9, the toddler was transferred back to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for care which was when Letisha and her husband Jake were able to stay at Wishlist House in Birtinya.

“We live three hours away in Kingaroy

Chali in hospital and recuperating which made it impossible for us to travel back and sleep in our own bed.”

Mrs Goodrich has now thrown her full support behind Wishlist’s latest project – Wishlist Centre.

Construction on the four-level facility to be built opposite SCUH will start in the coming months and will provide 18 self-contained rooms to support patients and families who need to be close to SCUH for ongoing treatment.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says a $12-million Federal Government grant would fund Stage One of Wishlist Centre, however more funding was needed for the fit-out before opening in late 2022.

“Additional funding is needed to ensure Wishlist Centre is a comfortable and

supportive environment for patients and their families during an ongoing health crisis,” Ms Rowe says.

Thankfully, Charli is now back at home in Kingaroy learning to walk, talk and eat again. She is expected to make a full recovery in the next 12 months.

“Wishlist House was a godsend for our family and provided comfort and stability during our darkest days,” Mrs Goodrich says.

“I see so many posts on Facebook and hear that families are struggling going back and forth to see loved ones who need treatment on the Sunny Coast.”

FIRST NATIONS ARTISTS WITH A DISABILITY SHARE STORIES NuunaRon is an inspirational and talented group of local First Nations artists who live with a disability and from today, throughout May, their works will be on show in the Culture is Inclusion exhibition at the Arts and Ecology centre, Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens.

The exhibition is a partnership between Caloundra Regional Gallery and the First Peoples Disability Network Australia (FPDN).

First Peoples Disability Network national training and resource development manager and artist Uncle Paul Calcott says the NuunaRon group provides a safe space for people to connect to culture and keep strong via yarning, painting and creating art.

“The name NuunaRon is used in memory of and out of respect for two elders, Aunty Nuuna, a saltwater Noonuccal woman from Stradbroke and Uncle Ron, a Kamilaroi man. These beautiful artists, who have since passed over to The Dreaming, lived with disability and made a valuable contribution to supporting others who lived with disability,” Uncle Paul says.

Connecting Stories was developed by Creative Arts Alliance in partnership with Blaklash Creative and the South East Queensland North (SEQN) Galleries Network.

A ferry impressive journey

oosa Ferry and Cruise Company has found uncertainty the most challenging aspect of the past year but has also uncovered improvements for the business along the way.

Managing director David Stielow says, “I have been presented with many challenges in the 25 years that I have had my own marine business but usually there is certainty around the timing of the challenge and how long you have to dig in. The challenge with the COVID pandemic, which is still very real today, is the uncertainty around lockdowns and how and when the landscape will change.

o help the community stand strong and improve overall health and wellbeing, Sunshine Coast Council is proud to offer the fourth and final round of The Lift Project Sunshine Coast, starting 31 May, with registrations now open.

The free program is a holistic, evidencebased, online adventure that draws together the latest research from neuroscience, lifestyle medicine and positive psychology.

This will be the final opportunity for the community to participate in The Lift Project Sunshine Coast. Registrations close 27 May. The creator of The Lift Project, internationally renowned lifestyle medicine expert Dr Darren Morton, says all levels of government and organisations need to take care of the wellbeing of their communities.

He believes there is a need for universal mental health interventions and to make

these types of evidence-based treatments available to whole communities.

And this is exactly what Sunshine Coast Council has done with the widespread availability and implementation of The Lift Project.

More than 4000 people registered for the first three sessions, and Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says it was because of these record numbers that Council decided to extend the offering to a fourth round.

Birtinya resident and program participant Trish Wegener applauded the Council offering and how it had given back to the community.

Ms Wegener has a 30-year background with self-development, having even written a book on the subject, so she joined in the last round to further expand her knowledge.

She says that Council has been a trailblazer in using this incredibly valuable program.

The Lift Project Sunshine Coast is suitable for all ages. Residents who have previously completed the program are welcome to participate again.

From 31 May, registered participants will receive 10 weekly emails with topics including: learning about the “emotional brain”, why activity and being outdoors is crucial, the importance of community, boosting your emotional wellbeing, what it takes to flourish and much more.

Included in the program is a free downloadable eBook that includes prompts and learnings each week, giving participants the opportunity to self-assess and look back on progress.

Writing a new story What do you do when you’ve built a global business that’s no longer creatively fulfilling? If you’re anything like former jewellery designer and author Samantha Wills, you walk away and start something new.

W

hy would someone walk away from a $10 million business they’ve spent 15 years building? Samantha Wills was only 21 when she began her boho-chic jewellery line from her kitchen table, before reaching the heights of success with Hollywood celebrities snapped wearing her designs and The New York Times calling her a ‘break-out star’.

For a girl who grew up in Port Macquarie, north of Sydney, it was a stratospheric rise to success. But no one saw the turmoil she endured behind the scenes – the bleeding, calloused fingers and all-nighters trying to fulfil huge orders.

All they saw was that her designs were featured on Sex and the City and stars like Nicky Hilton and Eva Mendes were wearing them.

“From 2008 when Eva Mendes wore our Bohemian Bardot ring, it never left the top of the bestsellers list. We moved nearly one million of them and released them in

366 colour ways. It changed the trajectory of the business and very much, my life.”

Ms Wills drew the attention of international media, moved to New York city and was living the dream. But it wasn’t the jewellery she loved; it was the opportunity to be creative, and when that creativity began to wane, she realised it was time to call it quits. Having designed 12,000 pieces of jewellery, once she decided to close her business in January 2019, she didn’t miss it at all.

Ms Wills ventured into jewellery design at a young age, never dreaming it would become a career. Back then, she wanted to be a dolphin trainer, but when her mother signed her up for a beading class when she

was 12, she soon began to sell her designs at her mum’s fashion boutique in Port Macquarie, making $20 or $30 a week.

Fast-forward to the creation of the popular Samantha Wills brand, and she couldn’t keep up with orders at Bondi Markets, where she first began to gain a following.

“For the first three years, I did absolutely everything myself,” she says.

“You get really excited when an order comes in for 40 pairs of the same earrings, but then you have to sit up all night making 80 earrings. Sometimes I made jewellery for 23 hours a day. I still have callouses.”

Ms Wills speaks of being featured in glossy magazines and feeling like no one knew the truth of the many years of hard

work that went into becoming “an overnight success”. She felt compelled to share the reality behind the glittering success story.

While living in New York, she did a course at Gotham Writers Workshop and decided to write a tell-all memoir. The result was her recently released book, Of Gold and Dust, a revealing look into her life and a blueprint for those who want to follow their passions. On May 26, she’ll visit the Coast to discuss her book at the Gold, Sparkle, SHINE Ladies Lunch.

“I liked the vulnerability of writing memoir,” she says. “It was like a literary time machine. You have to sit with yourself at 25 and 30 and it can be confronting, especially in darker times.

I share a lot of personal elements in my book. It was torturous in parts, but also cathartic in parts.”

In 2016, she launched the Samantha Wills Foundation, a platform that offers articles, insight and resources that can be accessed any time of the day or night.

Ms Wills has a genuine desire to help others avoid some of the pitfalls she encountered during her 15 years in business and wants to encourage people to follow their dreams. Looking back on her life, she believes everything happened the way it was supposed to.

“There’s a cosmic choreography about it,” she says. “I can look back on a 20-year journey and pinpoint these star-crossed moments and believe there was a higher power guiding me.”

UNITING TO FIGHT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

ore than 300 people gathered on May 5 to pay their respects and show their support to victims of domestic and family violence in a moving candlelight vigil and community march at Maroochydore.

It comes as Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month (May) is now well underway, a state-wide initiative encouraging communities across Queensland to stand as one and send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families and homes will not be tolerated.

Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor David Law says the Let’s Grow Together event, hosted in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and Centacare, was well attended and not only helped spread awareness of the important issue, it also shone the spotlight on support services available.

“Last night was very moving for many of us who attended and marched together and it was a humbling experience,” Cr Law says.

“At the same time, it was very important to be part of the march and

SMART WATER METERS Schools across the Sunshine Coast are set to teach Unitywater a thing or two about how customers use water. The utility is rolling out 10,000 smart water meters across areas of the Sunshine Coast, as part of a digital transformation technology trial.

Schools are among those helping test the new devices. Smart water meters, which will log and transmit water usage data wirelessly, will be installed in 30 Sunshine Coast schools, including 10 local educational providers as part of Unitywater’s digital neighbourhood program.

The devices will in future help customers to detect pipe leaks or unusual water usage patterns early, and there is no extra cost on customers’ bills from the rollout.

Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community, Katherine Gee, says the project would help lay the foundations for future solutions.

“As part of the project, we’ve also developed an augmented reality experience designed to drive awareness about hidden leaks, which can waste thousands of litres of water a day and often go unnoticed until a customer gets their bill,” she says.

ARE YOU UP ON YOUR ETF’S? First up – what is an Exchange Traded Fund or ETF? The standard definition is that it is a type of security that tracks an index, sector, commodity, or other asset, but which can be purchased or sold on a stock exchange the same as a regular stock.

An ETF can be structured to track anything from the price of an individual commodity, to a large and diverse collection of securities. ETFs can even be structured to track specific investment strategies. In other words, it is a managed fund that is traded on the stock market, making them easy to access. In addition, fees are generally quite low.

Recently, there have been some interesting sector ETFs gain popularity due to popular themes. The funds mentioned below are not exhaustive, and are just a selection of the hundreds of ETFs available.

ASIA – Betashares Asia Technology Tigers – The fund aims to track the performance of an index that provides access to the 50 largest technology and online retail companies that have their main area of business in Asia (including Japan). It is a simple, cost effective way to access some leading technology companies, including Alibaba & Tencent.

CLNE – Vac Eck Vectors Global Clean Energy ETF – CLNE gives investors a diversified portfolio of 30 of the largest and most liquid companies involved in clean energy production and associated technology and equipment globally. The S&P Global Clean Energy Index measures the performance of 30 of the largest and most liquid companies with businesses related to global clean energy production, technology and equipment, from both developed and emerging markets. Some companies they currently invest in include First Solar Inc, Vestas Wind Systems, and Siemens renewable Energy.

HACK – Betashares Global Cybersecurity ETF. The fund provides access to a diversified portfolio of the world’s leading cybersecurity companies.

Some current exposures include Zscaler, Crowdstrike, Accenture and Cisco.

wo Sunshine Coast mothers, both with successful individual businesses and a passion for empowering women, are teaming up to share a commercial space in Maroochydore.

After recording stellar growth in the last six months, local mobile laundry service The Laundry Lady is relocating its headquarters to the new space it will share with The Milk Pantry.

pick-up and drop-off wash, dry, fold and ironing service for homes and commercial customers. As well as here on the Sunshine Coast, the business has a team of contractors across Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Noosa, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, North Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney.

Meanwhile, The Milk Pantry creator and director Jessica Beveridge has carved out a niche in the Australian market, creating natural biscuits and brownies for breastfeeding mums.

“Moving into the larger office space

along with Jess and the wonderful team at The Milk Pantry is a major milestone for us,” Ms Toft says. “It allows the scope for further expansion in the coming 12 months and beyond, as Laundry Lady targets new markets and really ramps up recruitment nationwide.

“Being in the heart of the Sunshine Coast is yet another bonus, especially with all the promising new infrastructure, business investment, and population growth in the region.”

Ms Toft hopes the move will help create home-based work opportunities for mums, dads, students and job seekers, and take the stress out of the weekly laundry load.

As busy mothers, both ladies are strong advocates for women in business, employing female trainees, students and those who may be returning to the workforce after having children.

“We’ve come from a background where our working commitments are built around school drop-offs and sport,” Ms Toft says. “This space will not only serve as our operational headquarters and a welcoming walk-in storefront for Milk Pantry, but facilitate flexible working conditions for all our employees.”

Ms Toft has previously been named among Telstra’s 100 Faces of Small Business and is a 2020 AusMumpreneur silver award winner, while The Milk Pantry has shone at local events like the Sunshine Coast Business Awards.

A new two-metre-wide pathway, nearly 300 metres long, is now complete in Peregian Springs. Division 9 councillor Maria Suarez says the new Havana Road West pathway, between Brushbox Way and the Sunshine Motorway, has been a high priority given the number of people who use the pathway daily, including Coolum State High School students.

The school’s principal Troy Ascott says Havana Road West is a thoroughfare for students who live in Peregian Springs.

“On any given day, the number of students who access the pathway from Peregian Springs could be between 600 and 800 students,” he says.

“With no designated pathway, students previously had to negotiate their way to school using the road or the grass verge.”

Glass House MP Andrew Powell with youth member Connor Keogh The 2021 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament Member for Glass House, Connor Keogh, has met with Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell as part of the teen’s new role.

Connor is a year 10 student at Matthew Flinders Anglican College and hopes to undertake further studies in England once he graduates.

“I do hope to one day become a Member of Parliament, maybe in the United Kingdom; it’s a goal I’m actively striving toward and I thought that applying to Youth Parliament would help me learn

more about how this kind of role works,” Connor says.

Connor is also a member of the Committee for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.

Queensland Youth Parliament selects more than 90 youth aged 15 to 25 each year to discuss the issues facing young people and develop legislation.

“I plan on meeting with Connor throughout the year and he’s keen to shadow me around the electorate and in Parliament to get a firsthand experience of what it means to be an MP,” Mr Powell says.

This upgrade, being delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program and pool lessee Belgravia Leisure, will deliver a children’s zerodepth splash zone and two water slides. Council is also expanding and reconfiguring the carparking area that serves the aquatic centre. These projects have been delayed due to extended wet weather and significant latent (physical) conditions. The carpark extension is anticipated to be available in July, with the Splash Park expected to open in September. This will be great timing for the September school holidays and warmer weather.

Thanks for your patience in the interim. These upgrades will be a major drawcard to Nambour, empowering healthy and active lifestyles and facilitating many hours of fun for all ages.

New Reconciliation Action Plan At our March Ordinary Meeting on March 25 I was very pleased to help endorse Council’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2021-2022. The implementation of this Innovate RAP will continue to build and strengthen the relationships that are essential for reconciliation with the Traditional Owners and First Nations people. A number of new initiatives have been introduced within council’s new RAP such as the development of a cultural protocol document – including a cultural heritage guideline; the development of a First Nations’ recruitment, retention and professional development strategy; and projects building on council’s existing cultural awareness program and community engagement framework. These commitments provide a solid foundation within our organisation before we progress to a Stretch RAP in the future.

aroochydore VIEW Club is calling on members of the community to consider volunteering for children’s education charity The Smith Family as part of National Volunteer Week happening from May 17 to 23.

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s organisation with 300 clubs across Australia, all dedicated to supporting children in need

with their education through The Smith Family. Members do this through community fundraising, spreading awareness and volunteering.

This year, one of the key themes for National Volunteer Week is ‘reconnection’, and Maroochydore Club president Julie Terrasson says volunteering is more important than ever before.

“Volunteering is a great way to get back out there, make friends, and feel like you’re really making a difference to the lives of young people and their families,” she says.

“There are many opportunities for people to help out.

We are always looking for women to join us in supporting The Smith Family and we’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch and come along to our next meeting to learn more about VIEW.” The Smith Family’s acting CEO Judy Barraclough says volunteers are integral to delivering much-needed educational support to disadvantaged children and their families.

30 YEARS OF PERSEVERANCE AT LAST SEES ZGRAJEWSKI ROAD SEALED Yandina Creek resident Angelo Reitano has been campaigning for 30 years to have the road in front of his house along Zgrajewski Road sealed. And now he is “over the moon” federal member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien has secured $3.2 million of funding to seal the road between Arcoona Road and McCords Road, through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grants.

“It brings me real pleasure to deliver good news to people like Angelo,” Mr O’Brien says.

“He contacted my office to ask if we could help secure funding to seal Zgrajewksi Road, and we’ve been able to get it done.”

Having seen cars roll onto their roofs, Mr Reitano says he cannot wait for his road to finally be sealed.

“In the dry months it’s dusty, when it rains it floods, and it’s dangerous,” he says. “I never thought, when I moved here in 1986, that I would have to wait this long for the road to be sealed.

“I was delighted when Ted finally told me he’d secured the funding.”

The federal funding grant will pay for $3.2 million of the $3.52 million project, with Sunshine Coast Council to fund the balance.

The grants are designed to fast-track ‘shovel-ready’ projects in local council areas, with $1.5 billion handed out so far to support local jobs, businesses and boost the economy.

The resealing project should be completed by the end of the year.

Minyama art and framing business has launched a new gallery cafe, something the owners hope will add to the growing company and offer a unique space for customers.

After taking over Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery – formerly known as Caloundra Art and Framing Gallery – in 2017, Paula and John Gowland have expanded their business,

opening The Artist Cafe on April 30.

With the business growing, the cafe allows customers and artists to enjoy a coffee and browse the gallery while waiting for a consult.

“When we took over, we had five team members and we’ve grown the business and we now have 16 team members,” Ms Gowland says.

“We have seven framers out the back, four consultants who help you design the

frames and a graphic designer and now two cafe staff.”

Ms Gowland says she was looking to relocate earlier this year after outgrowing the current space, but when the shop next door became available the Gowlands decided to take over the lease.

“There was a cafe there previously, so we decided to keep the cafe. We wanted to create a space where people could come in and relax and look at the artwork in a space like it was in their own home.

“It’s a great space to show what we can do with framing and the art we have.

“We are quite a busy framing shop – there are times when a consultation for us can take up to an hour. We just found there were still people waiting.

“Now having a cafe allows our customers to enjoy a coffee and enables us to give the time and dedication to making the piece beautiful and correct rather than rushing through to get everybody served.”

The Artist Cafe serves Bear Bones Coffee as well as food from local supplier CK Wholefoods and sweet treats from The German Bakehouse.

“The response we’ve had on the coffee is amazing, people absolutely love the coffee,” Ms Gowland says.

“We are also partnered with CK Wholefoods, so they are providing all our cafe food. We have tandoori chicken wraps to vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free products.

“We have something for everyone, and it’s all delivered fresh every day.”

Ms Gowland says she loves her role consulting and creating something special for clients and artists.

“We are very lucky to be working in the framing industry. We get the chance to meet amazing artists and work with amazing people.

“We do tend to make people cry when they pick up their artwork because they are so thrilled.

“It becomes a really exciting reveal; they are so excited to see the finished product.

“We also work a lot with consumers who have a special keepsake or something they want to frame to create a memory, and that’s where we put that special touch.”

Beerwah Bulldogs players have been helping move heavy block at local business Hedging and Screening

A

rugby league team has come to the rescue of a Sunshine Coast nursery business facing a severe labour shortage.

Beerwah-based Hedging & Screening needed to place 180 tonnes of blocks for its state-of-the-art facility, used to

produce its hedging plants. But COVID-19 has drastically reduced the availability of international backpackers and with only three full-time staff at the nursery, owner Jeff Geldard says placing the blocks would have taken many weeks without temporary mass supplemental workers.

Instead, Mr Geldard found help from the local Beerwah Bulldogs rugby league team.

“We have more than 9000 blocks to move and each block weighs almost 20 kilos so having just three of us to do the job would have killed us,” he says. “We need these blocks in place to support our large hedging plants. I can normally rely on backpackers to come for a week or so but with that option unavailable I had to think outside the square, so I approached the Beerwah Bulldogs.

“Fortunately, the Bulldogs women’s team came to our rescue. They have been fantastic and they looked upon this as a team-bonding exercise and giving something back to the community.

“They have been able to shift around 2000 blocks a morning and we will get the job finished before the end of the month.

“We are now sponsoring the club thanks to the efforts of the players and we host a barbecue lunch for them every day.”

Hedging & Screening is an online nursery that delivers as far south as Melbourne.

Bulldogs open women’s co-coach and manager Glenn Tomokino says up to 15 players a day have been helping.

Madison Randl competed in a performing arts competition in 2015, winning $2000 for the school, which helped establish a Dance Excellence Performance Team, CalStars and the training team, CalSquad.

Madison is now in year 12 and volunteering to teach a competition routine for the team, having already choreographed and taught an awardwinning contemporary team in 2019.

Noah Bell, now in Year seven, regularly gives up his mornings to assist with the choreography and teaching of CalCrew (hip-hop) competition routines, having been part of both the CalStars and later CalCrew since Year three.

Caloundra State School principal Stephen Logan says the Dance Excellence Program provides opportunities for participation, fun, growth and performance for all students from Prep to Year six.

“We have seen the difference our dance programs make in so many ways for all children who attend our school.

“Each class from Prep to Year six in term three prepares its own dance to a different theme each year, culminating in a community showcase, Caloundra State School’s Dance Extravaganza.”

More than 300 students have participated in the high-performance teams at Caloundra State School.

A purpose-built performing arts centre is in the planning stages and will provide the school community with a 600- to 800-seat performance theatre, made possible with a recent state government commitment of $3.2 million.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON LOCAL TRANSPORT When a government asks you to raise your voice, you should take the opportunity to holler with all your might. It is one of the golden gifts of democracy.

On this occasion, it is the Sunshine Coast Council doing the asking, and it wants to know how we want to move around in our piece of paradise.

Things are already getting crowded out there on the blacktop. Get behind the wheel at peak times and feel the bite of frustration as the line of traffic creeps at walking pace.

And it is only going to get worse.

The Queensland government released figures in Parliament this week that showed vacant land in Noosa will run out in a year.

On the Sunshine Coast, we have only 2.3 years’ supply left on current trends.

There is no way around it: if more than 200,000 additional residents move here in the next 20 years – blowing us out to 518,000 residents – we are going to have higher-density housing and more of us will be trying to get to work, school, the shops, beaches and mountains.

Predictions are that at the current rate, the Sunshine Coast will have an extra 165,000 cars on its roads each day by 2041.

We have the second-highest rate of private car ownership per capita of any local government area in Australia.

Studies have shown that three-quarters of current car trips are less than 10 kilometres – the kind that could be done by bus or tram if we had a reliable, regular system. Or walking and biking if improved paths would allow them. We simply have to stop our enduring reliance on cars.

I can’t help but think that we have a prevalence for transport snobbery on the Sunshine Coast. Too many people deem bus and train travel the realm only of those too poor or unfortunate to have a car. This is not in keeping with other cities.

On Census day in 2016 on the Sunshine Coast, just 2.3 per cent of people took public transport to work. In Brisbane it was 11.4 per cent.

That we need improved transport infrastructure and systems is a given. There must be change. But that we get a say on what that looks like – that is a rare opportunity too good to pass up.

There is a false perception, perpetuated by very visible and vocal groups, that the council has already chosen light rail as its solution. This is not so, with five possibilities on the table. But unless ordinary people let the council know what we want, the decisions will be made on our behalf by those we elected.

The council’s transparency in its decision-making on this issue is refreshing.

History has shown it helps engender trust, honesty and integrity, so let’s honour it by attending information sessions and offering our feedback.

The dialogue has begun and it’s our turn to speak. Visit the council’s website to have a say on mass transit options by June 22.

TRANSPORT CHOICES

I have great concerns about the future regarding animals in restaurants, caravan parks and hotels regarding health and safety. We need clear rules and laws as we will all pay the cost for it. I have a lot of concerns: 1. We don’t know enough as to whether animals can be carriers of disease such as COVID. 2. Just about every household has one or two dogs/cats. If everyone wants to take their dogs to a restaurant, caravan park or hotel there could be as many dogs as patrons.

3. There is the added cost of cleaning up after pets.

4. Should the animals have a fight in the restaurant, who’s responsible for damages and compensation? The owner, restauranteur or council?

The push for ‘light’ rail from Caboolture to Maroochydore is disturbing. To start with, there is nothing light about light rail, which is a euphemism for trams. This form of transport is heavy on the taxpayer (probably the most expensive of solutions), heavy on land use, heavy on accident risks.

On the other hand, we have new suburbs like Aura with many houses on tiny blocks over a vast areas, which are difficult to service with a rigid public transport system.

They need frequent mini buses to feed to a larger, more central system. One system, very efficient in terms of cost, land use, capacity and flexibility are Sky Trains.

European and American cities had them for decades. Bangkok introduced them and changed the city and its traffic woes in a short time. Sky trains can go over the centre of major roads like Nicklin Way without impeding road traffic. They can be built relatively cheaply and quickly.

Sami Muirhead takes us through five of the 500 new words added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary this year.

read last week that school principals do not actually run their schools, that they are continually overridden by faceless folk sitting in some office in Brisbane.

No wonder teachers are dropping like flies, with stress leave from anything from bad manners right through to assault.

Our world has gone absolutely crazy as it seems there is no discipline and certainly no consequences for poor behaviour, which probably explains the bed we are now sharing with a good portion of society that has no respect for anything apart from maybe themselves, and that’s debatable.

How can a school not be run by the principal? Does he or she have to contact Control( I stole that from Maxwell Smart, as this is about as sensible) to make a call whether little Johnnie should be sent out to pick up pine cones because he told the teacher to get stuffed?

So I guess Control would debate with the principal whether this would in some way demean little Johnnie in some way? And more importantly, would it

impact statistics on poor behaviour, which the government is trying to show a downward graph for, rather than the opposite?

Maybe the folk in Control should go and walk in the shoes of the principals and their staff on a daily basis and see what they are dealing with and they may change their opinion.

Generations grew up with getting the cane and other forms of discipline and most seemed to turn out okay. Sure, there is an argument that the cane was too much, but what I see as one of the major issues is a lot of parents that do not support authority. It starts with teachers, then morphs into police and the slippery slope becomes slipperier.

If the system we have now continues, I wonder what Maxwell Smart would think? If he was judging what is happening right now he probably would have said, “Missed it by that much…..?”

I guess it comes down to actions and consequences. All of us need to be responsible, which I reckon might just make teachers’ jobs a bit easier.

ord nerds, unite! MerriamWebster added more than 500 definitions to the dictionary this year. So, let’s debrief on five words I think we will all need to be aware of for the rest of 2021.

‘Awe walk’ is top of my list. The official definition is taking a walk outside and trying to really take in all the things around you. For me personally, I get more excited on a lunchtime on Thursdays when it is takeaway Vietnamese spring roll day at work and I awe walk my belly down in the lift to buy my hot rolls of goodness. I have also been spotted at the bottle shop awe walking the aisles of gin.

Word number in our list two is ‘adulting’. Sigh. Adulting is hard to do and its loose definition is when you want to watch Netflix for six hours at night and eat cheese and fish fingers for dinner, but instead you decide to read to the kids and do the washing and make school lunches. I repeat: adulting is hard.

Our third word is ‘doomscrolling’, where you scroll through electronic news expecting it all to be bad. Well, is that really a new concept? The first thing I was

taught at university is to write about the one plane that crashed and not the 99 that landed safely.

‘Quaranteen’ is also on the list. It refers to teenagers who are in quarantine or doing lockdown with your family. Usually the teenager is moody and only leave their room to make ridiculous demands for more food and more data for their Tik Tok. ‘Thirsty’ is on the list and refers to the need for attention or approval. I know what you are thinking: doesn’t thirsty mean needing to drink? Well, Merriam-Webster added a new definition of the word meaning a strong desire for attention – especially on social media. This is an example of how to use thirsty: my coworker has posted four pictures of herself in a bikini this weekend, so she is clearly thirsty for us all to know she is still rocking a bikini.

And the last one is ‘WFH’. It stands for work from home. Thanks to the pandemic, many of us are working from home, which means we are probably spending more time adulting and doomscrolling and awe walking, while the kids are definitely quaranteening more in their rooms.

Interest in DIY interior styling has skyrocketed and there are a few trends that keep popping up time and time again. With an ever-changing repertoire of styles and themes, it can be difficult to keep up. So, what’s hot and what’s not? The team behind international design blog Homedit.com has worked with Pinterest to identify the design trends that are leading the way.

Here are the top three favourites.

Meanwhile, luxe minimalism is the least favourite design trend.

1. ECLECTIC In first place with a whopping 550,668 pins on Pinterest is the creative and colourful eclectic trend. This style is characterised by bringing together elements from different time periods, collections and designs. The key is to create cohesion in space through colour, materials and unusual design elements.

2. MID-CENTURY MODERN Possibly one of our favourite designs, this ever-enduring style is still going strong with more than 534,000 pins on Pinterest.

This design movement, which spanned from around 1930 through to the mid-1960s, centres on quality craftsmanship, a connection to the environment and organic materials. It is also recognised for its prolific use of glass, clean lines and iconic pieces of furniture.

3. BOHEMIAN The definition of bohemian is ‘a socially unconventional person, especially one who is involved in the arts’. What does this mean in terms of interior design? It comes down to creating an artistic, earthy, exotic space. The key is to incorporate various textures, handcrafted works, soft fabrics and strong colours and patterns.

On completion, Aura is planned to include two business parks, 10 sporting grounds, 25 community facilities, 20 educational facilities, and 700 hectares of conservation areas and parkland.

Family law and taxes When negotiating a family law settlement, you need to ensure you are getting what you negotiated by knowing and understanding the tax costs and implications. Common taxation or duty considerations that arise when separated parties adjust their property include: 1. Stamp duty – In Queensland the transfer of property, such as the family home or car, under court orders is exempt from stamp duty, providing significant benefit to the spouse retaining that asset.

2. Division 7A Income Tax Assessment Act – Any money paid or loaned, by a company to a shareholder or associate (such as a spouse), or a debt owing by a shareholder that is forgiven by a company may be deemed dividends, potentially triggering taxation liabilities. Payments that are to be made through a family company or a spouse’s company or, potentially forgiving debts as part of any property settlement, require carefully drafted court orders.

3. Capital Gains Tax – When selling or transferring an asset that earns income such as an investment property or business, as part of your property settlement, CGT will become a factor when there has been capital growth.

Every family law property negotiation requires an assessment of the tax implications and a documented agreement as to who will be responsible for payment of the tax and duty costs.

“Last year it was only about 60 pets for the same reason,” Ms Brischke says.

“We have had people living in cars for weeks trying to hold onto their pets, hoping they can find a property that will let them take them. That is devastating for them.”

“It is important in this current market to be really thinking sensibly about whether you are in a stable enough position to have a pet and provide for it for its life.”

hey are often your best friend; faithful, loving, welcoming you home with glee, keeping you company when life seems hard, but now these four-legged friends are creating headaches.

REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella sees that as the number of apartments grows and the level of pet ownership increases, “an objective balance is certainly required when managing pet ownership in residential communal environments”.

There are currently 62,336 dogs and cats registered with the Sunshine Coast Council.

“It’s important that body corporates carefully consider the rights of individual lot owners and what’s best for the pet,” Ms Mercorella says. “QCAT have handled a number of disputes regarding imposing complete bans on pet ownership within community titles schemes, however it’s determined that’s an unreasonable approach, which we also agree with.”

For renters, finding an available property in this very tight market leaves little room for negotiating with owners for permission to keep a pet in residence. For

REIQ Sunshine Coast zone chair Matt Diesel says he sees a lot of people trying to ensure their rental applications land at the top of the bundle. “Some people are considering rehoming their pets or giving them to a family member in the interim just to make sure they stand out and are in a position to secure a rental,” Mr Diesel says. As a result, there has been a surge in

pets surrendered to the community group Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS).

SCARS president Penny Brischke says that between January and April there has been about 40 pets come to her group due to the rental problems.

The scarcity of rental properties which allow pets has always been an issue on the Coast says Ms Brischke. But since late last year as the available rental property crisis started to hit its peak of just 0.4 per cent

Queensland captain Ali Brigginshaw is stoked the Sunshine Coast will again play host to the Women’s State of Origin clash on Friday, June 25 after last year’s fixture was disrupted by COVID-19 restrictions.

The Maroons will have their chance to defend their breakthrough title win in front of a possible capacity home crowd at Sunshine Coast Stadium, after the NRL confirmed last Tuesday the women’s Ampol State of Origin would be played in the Sunshine State for another year.

Brigginshaw played an instrumental part in last year’s 24–18 victory over New South Wales at Sunshine Coast Stadium, which was the first Women’s Origin clash played in Queensland.

While last year’s clash was a sellout, crowd numbers were capped at 4800 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Queensland skipper is hopeful this year’s match will again be a sellout, but this time at the ground’s maximum capacity of 10,210.

“It wasn’t the best experience for all our fans and family with the restrictions so I’m really happy for everyone it’s back on the Sunny Coast,” says Brigginshaw.

“I thought we needed another opportunity here after winning the trophy. I think we need to fill this stadium with as many people as we possibly can and put on the spectacle it should’ve been minus COVID-19.

“We want to be in the community, at fan days and tick the boxes properly. It just wasn’t what it should’ve been for both teams and that was no one’s fault.

“It was still amazing to see maroon in the crowd and family members who haven’t been able to make it to games in Sydney be there.

“But now we want it to be even bigger this year. That’s what gets you through, a big crowd and playing in front of your friends and family.

Division six councillor Peter Cox says the Sunshine Coast Council is confident of another sell-out crowd on June 25.

“Council is extremely proud to be hosting the pinnacle event for women’s Rugby League in Australia and we anticipate this match will be a genuine drawcard for footy supporters ” Cr Cox says.

MOVING REACTIONS FROM DEBUTANTS IMPRESS COACH

H

eartwarming reactions from Sunshine Coast Lightning’s two debutants book-ended the season opener on Saturday, with Mahalia Cassidy and Kate Shimmin both taking to court for the first time with the club.

For Shimmin, the occasion was made more special being her 100th National League game.

When Kylee Byrne gave the defender the nod, her reaction left the head coach beaming.

“The moment I looked down the court and said, ‘you’re on’, she did this double fist pump and it was so nice to see that passion and excitement of someone that went ‘yep – I’m going to go throw everything at it’,” Byrne says.

“For Kate to deliver what she did was a huge contribution to our win. She built with every minute of her court time and made the most of her first outing in the Lightning colours.

“Once she got moving and got into the head of the defenders her unique style came out and we saw glimpses of what Kate is capable of.”

Cassidy made a statement from the first centre pass, silencing any naysayers on Lightning’s midcourt changes in the offseason with the retirement of Laura Langman.

“For Mahalia, her transition into our team was effortless and seamless – it looks as though she’s been with us her whole life,” says Byrne.

“I thought she was very, very good.

“That connection with Shezzy (Laura Scherian) and balancing the circle edge, sharing the number of feeds and assists into the circle – it didn’t matter who was on they knew what role they had to play.

“In combination with Steph [Wood] as well, the three of them had the patience and the control to work the ball around.”

Testament to the club’s inclusive culture, Cassidy took time to praise her teammates post-match.

“She loved that game and commented to the group afterwards about how calm she felt and had some really positive words to say back which was huge,” says Byrne.

At 25-years-old, Cassidy has a lot of upside both individually and as she continues to settle in Lightning’s lineup.

BALANCING ACT: THE INTENSE JOURNEY TO THE PARALYMPICS WORDS: Jordan Herbert She might spend endless hours of the day following the black line in the swimming pool, but Australian team member Keira Stephens also has a passion for people.

The 18-year-old balances studying for a social work degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast, with 10 swimming sessions and three gym sessions every week, as she prepares for the Paralympic trials at Adelaide in June.

Stephens, who was born missing fingers on her left hand, was first selected in Australia’s Dolphins team for the 2018 Pan Pacs swimming championships in Cairns.

It was a stellar beginning, and she swam her way to a silver medal in the 100-metre breaststroke SB9 category.

Stephens started swimming when she was five years old and started competing in 2015 .

While breaststroke is her favourite stroke, Stephens is something of an all-rounder, with freestyle and medley also on her schedule.

The break in training and competing forced by the pandemic caused what Stephens said was her lowest point in trying to find motivation and keep fit.

However, her selection in the Australian team in 2018 was a high point.

She’s among several Sunshine Coast swimmers who will press claims for Paralympics selection, at the national trials in Adelaide in June.

Swimming is a huge part of Stephens’ life, but she also has an eye on the rest of her life.

“I would like to go do a couple of Games but then I do want to do social work when I finish,” she says.

The bottom end of the Banks is the place to chase some early season snapper and also some chicken of the sea, pearl perch. Fishing the Fads is producing some mahi mahi and there are still plenty of tuna around from one end of the coast to the other with the Bay at Mooloolaba have the better action. Flathead in the rivers have been active on the run-out tide and Caloundra and Maroochy has been working the best and put those pots in as with the bit of recent rain there have been some muddies around. The beaches along Warana have been great for some bream and dart at dusk, but if you’re into bass fishing Borumba Dam and Lake McDonald have had the better reports of late.
