A
ustralia can learn from the United States’ vaccination rollout, the president’s top infectious disease adviser Dr Anthony Fauci says. Dr Fauci, who has advised seven US presidents, admitted the country’s initial pandemic response was poor during the University of NSW’s inaugural David Cooper lecture last week. “We had an inconsistent response, which allowed us ... to really do worse than essentially any other country” the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said. While the US has recorded more than 550,000 deaths, Australia has performed among the best in the world. “You had the capability and the uniformity of your citizens that when you shut down, you really shut down very effectively,” he said. But now, with a change of president and change in approach, the US is in the midst of a dramatic turnaround. It is now among the world leaders in a different statistic – vaccinations per capita. Australia, on the other hand, fell 3.3 million short of a target to fully vaccinate four million people by the end of March, then completely discarded its vaccine rollout timetable after receiving updated medical advice on the AstraZeneca jab. Dr Fauci’s advice to Australia, which has administered about 1.29 million vaccine doses, is to make the rollout the “highest priority” and to make it equitable. “What [President Biden] has done, for example, is open up community vaccine centres, get vaccines to the pharmacies, develop mobile units to go out to get the people who are in poorly accessible areas,” he said. Retired physicians, military personnel, nurses and medical students – as many vaccinators as possible – are out in the field. “And it works – the day before yesterday we had 4.6 million vaccinations performed in a single day.” While Australia is largely virus-free, an efficient rollout is increasingly important as new virus variants emerge.
NATO FORCES TO LEAVE AFGHANISTAN TOGETHER
“As long as there’s the dynamic of virus replication somewhere, there will always be the threat of the emergence of variants, which could then come back,” Dr Fauci said. “And even though most of the rest of the world is vaccinated, it can threaten the world that has felt that they’ve controlled the virus, when they’re still quite vulnerable.” Helping developing nations vaccinate their citizens is key to managing that threat too, he added. – AAP
A coalition of NATO-led troops will leave Afghanistan in co-ordination with a planned US withdrawal by September 11, Washington’s top diplomat said ahead of a formal announcement of the end of two decades of fighting. Around 7000 non-US forces from mainly NATO countries, but also from Australia, New Zealand and Georgia, outnumber the 2500 US troops in Afghanistan but still rely on US air support, planning and leadership for their training mission. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said it was time for NATO allies to make good on its mantra that allies went into Afghanistan together and would leave together. “I am here to work closely with our allies, with the [NATO] secretary-general, on the principle that we have established from the start: in together, adapt together and out together,” Blinken said in a televised statement at NATO headquarters, standing alongside NATO SecretaryGeneral Jens Stoltenberg. “We will work very closely together in the months ahead on a safe, deliberate and co-ordinated withdrawal of our forces from Afghanistan.”

Soldiers from Battery Hill going swimminng at Kings Beach
We will remember them As we prepare to commemorate Anzac Day, My Weekly Preview looks at how war impacted our local community. WORDS: Gail Forrer.
I
n war mythology, the parade ground is considered hallowed ground. It is thought to be the place where ghosts of soldiers past go back to visit their mates. Between 1939 to 1945, it is estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 soldiers stood on the white sand of Kings Beach, Caloundra, to farewell Australia and join the overseas war effort. Caloundra RSL War Museum curator Mr Trevor Smith OAM has photos of the young men and women (including the one pictured above), whose last memories of their home before they hit the horrors of war may have been the scent of salt entering their nostrils, the sound of crashing waves and the magnificent beauty of a Southeast Queensland coastline. This is one of the reasons Gary Phillips, Caloundra sub-branch welfare officer, wished to see a life-size bronze statue of a soldier, nurse and wounded soldier on a single plinth at Kings Beach. Together with this, Mr Phillips believes it will add to the knowledge of Caloundra’s role during the war years. “It is our heritage,” he says. Mr Phillips says his interest was piqued at Caloundra’s commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific”, when he met various people who

related their story to him. One of them was Mary Tutt (wife of Sunshine coast historian Stan Tutt) and the other, Nev Anning. Over time, Mr Phillips developed a friendship with Mr Anning that included relating adventures that could hardly happen in the 21st century. “He said he and a mate decided they were joining up, when a third person heard, he wanted to join them. “However, he owned and ran a dairy farm and therefore was part of the essential services. “Not to be stopped there, they built a house, so he could get a manager and go to war with them.” Later on, he and Nev Anning were captured and became Changi prisoners of war. Mr Phillips is mindful of the various plaques already in place and he mentions the Caloundra Fishing Club jetty. “That’s where soldiers would leave to go to Bribie Island and patrol,” he says. Additionally, there is the War Memorial Walk (Kings Beach to Wickham Place) where, already, there are 2000 plaques laid. Mr Phillips says that if a plaque is to be laid for a person from another country, permission must be granted. “Since email, gaining permission is much easier,” Mr Phillips says, noting that

previously, with snail mail it was a much longer process. Mr Phillips says he was able to progress the idea of a bronze statue with support from the RSL Sub-Branch president Ms Heather Christie, councillor Terry Landsberg along with Caloundra RSL War Museum curator, Trevor Smith. However, it would take about $300,000 to create the piece and while Mr Phillips was busy calling for donors and
checking out available government grants, just two weeks ago he received a wonderful surprise. “A coast philanthropist has stepped forward and committed to a $300,000 building donation.” The sculptor chose to carry out this work is Lavaworx, Mark Snell and Jane Estelle Bailey. Mr Snell created the ANZAC Centenary Memorial, at Freedom Park, Pialba, Hervey Bay. At this location, the sculpture includes two black granite walls depicting a World War 1 trench. The Light Horsemen bronze statue represents a brave ANZAC jumping over that trench on his way to battle. CALOUNDRA IN WWII Articles on the Sunshine Coast Council website refer to the role of Caloundra during WWII. On the website heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au (under ‘Caloundra’) one article notes: ‘In the war years from 1939 to 1945, Caloundra was classified as a restricted area by the Australian Defence Force. Many homes were commandeered by the Armed Forces and the Caloundra School in Queen Street became the headquarters for the American Army, and later the Australian Coast Artillery.’ An extract from another article in the council’s ‘Backward Glance’ series states: “With troop trains passing through, soldier camps, MPs stationed at the main intersection on what was known as ‘Fiveways’ Landsborough, the Bribie Island Fortifications and Military Jetty at Golden Beach and restricted zones such as Caloundra, almost all of the Sunshine Coast region was involved in some way, including its residents.

Caloundra was also the site of a radar training school as well as a number of signal stations. Caloundra was chosen for its close proximity to the shipping channel and was used as an observation area for shipping movements. Many of the local houses were commandeered to house service personnel. There were a number of gun emplacements along the headland, as well as boats and jetties to service the Fort Bribie emplacements and personnel. Artillery practice and other army training was held in the areas of Battery Hill and Currimundi.

The following text is from the Australian War Memorial website: The Dawn Service observed on Anzac Day has its origins in an operational routine which is still observed by the Australian Army today. The half-light of dawn plays tricks with soldiers’ eyes and from the earliest times the half-hour or so before dawn, with all its grey, misty shadows, became one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were therefore woken up in the dark, before dawn, so that by the time the first dull grey light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert and manning their weapons. This was, and still is, known as ‘Stand-to’. It was also repeated at sunset. After the First World War, returned soldiers sought the comradeship they felt in those quiet, peaceful moments before dawn. With symbolic links to the dawn landing at Gallipoli, a dawn stand-to or dawn ceremony became a common form of Anzac Day remembrance during the 1920s; the first official dawn service was held at the Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. Dawn services were originally very simple and followed the operational ritual; in many cases they were restricted to veterans only. The daytime ceremony was for families and other well-wishers, the dawn service was for old soldiers to remember and reflect among the comrades with whom they shared a special bond. Before dawn the gathered veterans would be ordered to ‘stand to’ and two minutes of silence would follow. At the end of this time a lone bugler would play the Last Post and then concluded the service with Reveille. In more recent times, families and young people have been encouraged to take part in dawn services, and services in Australian capital cities have seen some of the largest turnouts ever. Reflecting this change, the ceremonies have become more elaborate, incorporating hymns, readings, pipers and rifle volleys. Others, though, have retained the simple format of the dawn stand-to, familiar to so many soldiers.

Work starts later this month to resurface three kilometres of the Sunshine Motorway from the Mooloolah River at Minyama to the Mooloolaba Road off-ramp in Buderim. About 500 metres of Kawana Way will also be resurfaced as part of the $5 million project. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says, “These works will resurface the motorway, as well as several on and off-ramps. The works of Kawana Way will start in June.” Sunshine Motorway works will take about three months, while the Kawana Way upgrade will take three weeks, weather permitting. Work will be carried out at night and signs will advise of changed traffic conditions.

The brewers at Eumundi Brewery are keen for some new inspiration, and are throwing out the challenge to local beer-lovers to get creative with the launch of the Brewed By Eu competition. Head brewer Chris Sheehan says the challenge is to create a beer that is inspired by Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast. “For some it might be a particular place, be it the surf or the hinterland; maybe the coastal vibe; or perhaps it’s a particular song that really captures the essence of what it means to live here. It’s also important to give your beer a name. When you’ve come up with the concept, think about some suggestions for ingredients and a type of beer… Some of our seasonals to date have included the Autumn Spice Ale made with local honey and turmeric.” Entrants need to be 18-plus and can register their ideas until May 9 at eumundibrewery.com.au.
Applications are now open for 15- to 24-year-olds to be part of a new era in local government and a first for the region with the creation of the Sunshine Coast Youth Council. The locations of more than 215,000 speed limits across Queensland roads have been made public for the first time via a single spreadsheet available online. “Whether you are looking at speed limits in your local area, producing maps or running algorithms to analyse data, this comprehensive list of speed limits is a Queensland first,” Department of Transport and Main Roads chief engineer Dennis Walsh says. He says the data was collected across an 18-month period between 2019 and 2020, and efforts will be made to keep the data up to date across Queensland’s 185,00 kilometres of roads. NEW RESCUE HELICOPTER HAS LANDED
NEW BUSINESS HELPS KIDS
A new lifesaver rescue helicopter, Lifesaver 46, will be based on the Sunshine Coast. Unveiled this month by Surf Life Saving Queensland, it will patrol beaches in the state’s southeast every day and replaces the B0105 that was in service from 2012. Lifesaver 46, an Airbus EC135P2+, is a state-of-the-art aircraft built to contemporary engineering and safety standards with all-weather capability, autopilot and a night vision goggle-compatible cockpit. It will be based at SLSQ’s Caloundra hangar and will keep an eye out for rips, currents and distressed swimmers during its runs up and down the coast. Workshops will focus on developing podcast ideas, how to capture quality audio, editing techniques, how to upload
files and market your podcast episodes. “So, make sure you visit the library website to find out more, explore the training options and book your recording session.” Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch says this project has been brought to life thanks to a $19,000 grant from the Palaszczuk government. “Libraries are vital community hubs that provide spaces and programs for storytelling,” Minister Enoch says. “And this has been enhanced at the Kawana Library through the new podcast studio. “More and more Queenslanders are listening to podcasts, and this new studio is a great way for people in the community to develop new skills, embrace their creativity and tell their stories.” StoryCast Studios is a Sunshine Coast Council Libraries initiative proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government and the State Library of Queensland through the Strategic Priorities grants program.

Feedback received about the various ways of accommodating growth will help inform the preparation of the new planning scheme.

DATA TO DRIVE SMARTER DECISION MAKING Real-time data on people movement, water use and ambient temperatures is now being captured in Woombye to help the council improve its delivery of services. Division 5 councillor Winston Johnston says 10 sensors have been installed on poles along Blackall Street for the Data Driven Decision Making (DDDM) pilot project which is part of council’s Smart City Framework. “Capturing real-time data is becoming increasingly important to council because it provides definitive information which shows us how we can improve the way we plan for the future and deliver more efficient services and infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast community,” Cr Johnston says. “This pilot project in Woombye is now capturing real-time information about pedestrian and vehicle movement in the area. It is capturing data on how long they’re in this area and their direction of movement. Vice President of the Woombye Community and Business Association (WCBA) Grant Palethorpe says the use of smart technologies has the potential to help residents and visitors better connect with local communities.
“This pilot project is exciting as the data collected about how people move and utilise public spaces can accurately inform council’s decision making into the future to improve our public spaces,” Mr Palethorpe says “One of the primary concerns for business owners in Woombye is having ample car parking spaces available for customers. So local business owners are particularly interested in the data which is gathered from car park sensors…” “If we want great public spaces, they need to be comfortable to be in. Improving walkability will also help to reduce reliance on cars and the issues that Woombye has with car parking.”

REFLECTIONS ON THE PAST On March 31, the Royal Australian Air Force marked 100 years of service to Australia. Buderim’s Neville Chadwick recalls his time with the RAAF and his service during WWII. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
L
ike many young Australian men, Neville Chadwick was only 18 when he enlisted in the RAAF on June 22, 1942 to “do his bit” for the war effort. His father had served in artillery in WWI and Mr Chadwick was determined to serve his country too, taking on the role of an Air Force radar mechanic. “I joined up straight after school in 1942 and by the time I finished training it was the end of ’43 or the beginning of ’44. We did the initial training in Maryborough, being taught the marching and all that sort of thing. Then I was sent to the tech [technical college] in Sydney where they trained you and you decided what you wanted to do. I decided I wanted to be an electrician and got sent down to Melbourne tech. From there I went to Sydney and was trained as a wireless assistant and when I finished that, I was posted to Cootamundra to the Air Observer’s School. They were training on Avro Ansons.” Mr Chadwick was posted to the 13th Squadron and sent to Kiriwina in the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea. “What I had to look after was what they call IFF – identification friend or foe. When the plane was flying around, we could tell from the ground radar whether it was a friendly plane or an enemy plane. “When I got to the squadron, all the sets were unserviceable. To fix them up, we used to take them out, open them up and stick them out in the sun. With all the moisture up there, it used to play havoc with them,
but sticking them in the sun dried them out and at the time, that repaired it.” It was the first time Mr Chadwick had left Australia and he says it took some time to get used to living with older men. “We were doing ground support for General Krueger and I’ll always remember, the planes had a cover around the engine that faced forwards and they used to come back from patrol with bits of coconut palms caught up in them. One pilot came back with a dead monkey stuck on it – that’s how low they were flying.” Mr Chadwick was involved in a number of air raids and says there were a few times he feared for his life. “When I was on the island of Noemfoor, we were camped right on the edge of the air strip. On my first night there, I went to bed on my stretcher and there was an air raid warning. I was with an old person who had been in for quite a while. I said, ‘Where do we go to get into the trench, just in case?’ He said, ‘Go back to sleep.’ He went back to sleep and I sort of just lay there, wondering. But nothing happened. It wasn’t too bright, because a few bombs were dropped there. “From Noemfoor, we went to Morotai, up near the Philippines. That was a big island with three air bases there and all types of aircraft, mainly American. We had air raids there too. The day after all our aircraft arrived, the Japs [sic] had come across and bombed the air strip and we didn’t

PROFILE have any serviceable aircraft. It was mostly superficial damage that had to be fixed up. From there, the squadron was split up – half went to the Philippines and the other half went to Tarakan, on the east coast of Borneo. “We were under Australian control there and that was the biggest letdown of anything. We’d been under American control for months and were issued with packs containing chewing gum, shaving creams, lots of little things you needed. Under the Australians we got nothing. The Americans, as soon as they landed in a place and got it more or less cleared, they would do things like put on outdoor movies. We never had anything like that on Tarakan. I was there until just before the Japanese capitulated.” Now 97 and living in Buderim with his wife, Mr Chadwick says he doesn’t think about the war much anymore, but will occasionally go through a few old photos. “It was an experience and we were lucky we were never in any serious action,” he says. “All we had to do was put up with the occasional air raid, which was nearly always at night. They weren’t too accurate with their bombing, fortunately.” Mr Chadwick played bowls for many years but age has forced him to give it up, so he spends most of his time at home, reading. “I used to do quite a bit on the
computer, but all these newfangled things are getting a bit beyond me. Each time I turn the computer on, it’s updated to something new and I can’t follow it. “We don’t have mobile phones or iPads or any of that. I’m not happy with the way everything is going. Some of the banks have closed their branches on Buderim. You can complain, but it doesn’t do any good.” Mr Chadwick has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 40 years and always participates in the Buderim Anzac Day street march, which this year will be held at Buderim’s state school. He finds it too difficult to walk the distance, so he takes part on his scooter. “The Friends of Buderim put on a morning tea for everyone at the school and you can get yourself a cup of coffee and a bit to eat, talk to some people that perhaps you haven’t seen for a while.” While he’s a member of Maroochy RSL, Mr Chadwick doesn’t attend any events for veterans, as he doesn’t have transport and would have to pay for a taxi. When asked if he’s proud of his military service, he responds with a humble, “I suppose so”. Still, he believes Anzac Day remains an important event on the Australian calendar and one he’ll continue to participate in as long as he is able. “The bulk of the people watching the march are the younger ones,” he says. “All the kids are there. It’s always well crowded.”

MARY VALLEY RATTLER ANZAC EXPRESS Gympie Station will relive its association with Australia’s war efforts by staging a dedicated ANZAC Express Train on Sunday, April 25. The ANZAC Express service will include lunch at historic Gympie Station, followed by a special train service aboard the Mary Valley Rattler to Amamoor. Lunch starts 11.45am, with the train departing at 1pm and returning at 4pm. Passengers can get off at Amamoor Station and watch as the train is turned around on the revolving platform for the return journey to Gympie Station. The current Gympie Station opened in December 1913, just before World War 1, and was the send-off and return point for Diggers fighting in both world wars. Hundreds of residents from the Gympie region volunteered for the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force in World War I. Tickets: For the return journey and two-course lunch tickets are available for $125 (adult) and $60 (children aged two to 12 years). CROWD EXPECTED TO COMMEMORATE ANZAC DAY AT COTTON TREE 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force, which has played a significant role in conflict and peace missions around the world. MAKING THE CONNECTION: SERVICE DELIVERS MORE THAN JUST PRODUCE Former farmer Robert Pekin has made it his mission to connect farmers with customers. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Originally a dairy farmer in Victoria, Mr Pekin’s farm fell under after years of pressure from the deregulation of the dairy industry, plummeting milk prices and tough weather. “I was one of many who fell victim to rising pressures and falling prices in the

community-focused produce delivery initiative that helps pay local farmers has expanded to the Sunshine Coast. Food Connect is a social enterprise giving foodies access to a huge range of organic or regenerative produce grown
within 500 kilometres of their door through an online store. By keeping food miles to a minimum, Food Connect maintains low costs for customers while paying farmers a larger proportion of the profit. The “farm to fork” approach means

Food is so deeply rooted in community, but once my milk left the gate I didn’t know where it went or who was drinking it. “I knew there had to be a better way. I spent a couple of years soul-searching and looking into different models from around the world, and came across
community-supported agriculture, which Food Connect has its roots in.” While produce delivery services are becoming more popular, especially as a result of the COVID pandemic, Mr Pekin says Food Connect is a pioneer in this space doing things a “little differently”. “One of the most powerful things about Food Connect is the appreciation our farmers feel,” he says. “Not only are they being paid a fair price for their product, but they know who’s eating their food – and often hearing from them. It’s not unusual for us to pass on thank you notes from customers. “One farmer still glows whenever he talks about the time that a family loved his apples so much, we gave them his number to call and say thank you.” Food Connect also offer initiatives like neighbourhood pick-up hubs, reusing delivery boxes and customer farm tours. Sunshine Coast deliveries began in February this year, with orders arriving every Thursday, and many locals are now regular customers. Some local producers include Clarks at Woombye, Pim’s Organics in the Glass House Mountains, Maleny Cheese and Kin Kin Naturals, as well several seasonal producers. A
team of local construction workers is preparing to challenge their mental and physical limits in a 48-hour marathon event later in May. Five staff from Maroochydore-based DYFA Plumbing will put themselves on the line for the gruelling Goggins Challenge, which encompasses four miles, every four hours across 48 hours.
Equating to just over 77 kilometres across the two days, the challenge was created by David Goggins, an American ultra-marathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete and retired Navy SEAL. Construction, a charity supporting mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry. “I was going to do this challenge on an individual basis and mentioned it to a few guys in here and it evolved into a charity thing where we could raise some money,” he says. Sadly, the construction and mining industry has one of the highest rates of suicide, with 190 workers taking their lives each year. “For us being in this industry, we thought it was fitting to align ourselves for that,” Mr Spurling says. “We work alongside people who have had their own challenges and you do see it out there and it is definitely something that is close to us. “This is a unique challenge and helps build that awareness. People might be more likely to investigate and see why we are doing it and raise a bit of cash and awareness.” Having competed in triathlons, Mr Spurling says he is preparing for as much a mental challenge as a physical one. “It’s definitely a mental challenge and a bit of a grind over 48 hours. It’s something a little outside the box.” The DYFA team will complete the challenge from May 28 to 30 and hope to reach a fundraising target of $20,000. unshine Coast Grammar student Grace Brimelow is not letting a disability stop her, recently coming home from the National Age Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast as silver medallist. Competing with an S8 classification, the 14-year-old competed in seven events, placing second in the 100-metre freestyle and fourth in the 50-metre and 400-metre freestyle. Grace’s mother, Simone Pearce, says her daughter swam a personal best in every event. “Both me and her dad are so proud,” Ms Pearce says. “It’s very pleasing for us to see her find her confidence. “Grace competed against all other classifications from S6 to S17 in divisions for 11- to 14-year-olds, 11- to 15-yearolds and 11- to 19-year-olds, depending on the event.” “Mutli-class athletes compete by collating points by a ranking against the world record or best performance in an event for their classification.” Grace was born with Cri du chat
Fourteen-year-old Grace Brimelow is an Australia silver medallist after an impressive swim at the National Age Swimming Championships syndrome, which impacts her physical capacity and strength. Coached by Jayden Hopewell and Luke Stafford, Grace says she is very grateful for all the time and effort they put into her training and competitions. Grace now has her sights set on qualifying for the Paralympics when she is older in swimming and in triathlon.

With ‘Be strong’ and ‘Believe’ tattooed on each of Sabrina Shardlow’s arms, it is no surprise that her life story has seen a few challenges. The Maroochydore woman is one of nine extraordinary people who are bravely sharing their stories through STEPS Employment Solutions’ #SeeME video series. The series aims to shed light on the obstacles young Australians with disabilities, mental health issues or other barriers face when trying to secure employment and highlight the unique qualities they can bring to a workspace. CLUBS GRATEFUL FOR LATEST GRANTS

ocal community groups across the region are benefitting from the last round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. New field lighting, court upgrades and an accessible minivan are just some of the big-ticket items that will be funded in the Ninderry electorate. MP Dan Purdie says five community and sports clubs will share nearly $130,000 including Coolum Beach Junior Rugby League Club (Coolum Colts), Coolum Croquet Club, Eumundi Tennis Club, Maroochy Men’s Shed and Coolum Peregian RSL Sub-branch.
“As a proud sponsor of Coolum Colts junior rugby league, I know how important the field lighting is for the club,” Mr Purdie says. “Not only will the field lighting be utilised by the Colts for their footy season, in the off-season it will also service the Coolum Sharks Cricket Club who use the same fields, giving twice as much value to this grant.” Coolum Colts is receiving $35,000 to field lighting, something president Josh Olsen says the club has been trying to fundraise for a number of years. “The field lighting has been on our wish list for a few years now, and it’s great
to think we’ll finally be able to play and train under lights,” he says. “This will really benefit not only our club, but other sporting codes and the wider community.” Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson has also announced $80,000 in grants for her local electorate to benefit Equity Works Association, IFYS, Queensland Parachuting Association, Youth with a Mission (Sunshine Coast) and Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association South-East Queensland Branch. Round 109 of the gambling grants closes on April 30.
Two sections of Lindsay Road in Buderim are currently undergoing improvements. The first is a 100-metre stretch from about 169 to 179 Lindsay Road, while the other section is a 175-metre stretch of road from approximately 249-275 Lindsay Road. Works at both sites include road and shoulder widening, minor tree clearing, new kerb and channel, new signage and alterations to property access to match neatly with the new road surface. Offset planting will be undertaken to compensate tree removal. Council will implement single-lane road closures during construction and our project team will endeavour to progress work as quickly and safely as possible. Council has received funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program to carry out these works, which are expected to be completed by May 7, weather permitting. A sweet project Check out the new works proposed by DTMR for the intersection of Mooloolaba Road and Sugar Road. Further information about the proposed intersection upgrade, including the layout, can be found at tmr. qld.gov.au. Design work for the project is progressing and is anticipated to be completed by late 2021, with construction currently scheduled to start by mid-2022. Read all about it! MAKING THE CONNECTION: SERVICE DELIVERS MORE THAN JUST PRODUCE Former farmer Robert Pekin has made it his mission to connect farmers with customers. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Originally a dairy farmer in Victoria, Mr Pekin’s farm fell under after years of pressure from the deregulation of the dairy industry, plummeting milk prices and tough weather. “I was one of many who fell victim to rising pressures and falling prices in the

community-focused produce delivery initiative that helps pay local farmers has expanded to the Sunshine Coast. Food Connect is a social enterprise giving foodies access to a huge range of organic or regenerative produce grown
within 500 kilometres of their door through an online store. By keeping food miles to a minimum, Food Connect maintains low costs for customers while paying farmers a larger proportion of the profit. The “farm to fork” approach means

Food is so deeply rooted in community, but once my milk left the gate I didn’t know where it went or who was drinking it. “I knew there had to be a better way. I spent a couple of years soul-searching and looking into different models from around the world, and came across
community-supported agriculture, which Food Connect has its roots in.” While produce delivery services are becoming more popular, especially as a result of the COVID pandemic, Mr Pekin says Food Connect is a pioneer in this space doing things a “little differently”. “One of the most powerful things about Food Connect is the appreciation our farmers feel,” he says. “Not only are they being paid a fair price for their product, but they know who’s eating their food – and often hearing from them. It’s not unusual for us to pass on thank you notes from customers. “One farmer still glows whenever he talks about the time that a family loved his apples so much, we gave them his number to call and say thank you.” Food Connect also offer initiatives like neighbourhood pick-up hubs, reusing delivery boxes and customer farm tours. Sunshine Coast deliveries began in February this year, with orders arriving every Thursday, and many locals are now regular customers. Some local producers include Clarks at Woombye, Pim’s Organics in the Glass House Mountains, Maleny Cheese and Kin Kin Naturals, as well several seasonal producers. OLIVIA SAINSBURY LEAVING THE CHAMBER

fter three years shaping the local business world, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Olivia Sainsbury is stepping down. Ms Sainsbury, who joined the organisation in 2018, has confirmed she will step down from her role and says she is extremely proud of what the Caloundra Chamber achieved during her time. “Leading the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce has been an incredibly rewarding experience that has enabled me to build fulfilling relationships with local business owners across the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Sainsbury says. “It’s been fantastic to get to know so many of our members and to work with such an innovative and inspiring group of businesses who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the Coast. “The Caloundra Chamber management team continued to challenge ourselves against our strategic plan and we are extremely proud of the results. “From strengthening stakeholder relationships with retailers and all three levels of government, to building

CRIME PREVENTION DAY A SUCCESS Earlier this month Sunshine Coast police, Crime Stoppers and Golden Beach Neighbourhood Watch held a crime prevention day at Fraser Park. t is hoped the daily commute and school-time congestion on Parklands Boulevard will be smoother after the completion of a $17.6 million upgrade. The complex 18-month project on the busy Meridan Plains street has been delivered by Sunshine Coast Council, with an additional $750,000 from the state government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants. “Council has invested $16.9 million into this upgrade, which has provided the Meridan Plains community with a new four-lane section of Parklands Boulevard between Sunset Drive and Meridan Way,” Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “This upgrade improves safety and travel time for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians by improving traffic flow, reducing delays during peak periods and catering for future traffic volumes.”
Division three councillor Peter Cox says: “I’ve watched the delays and experienced the pain firsthand, so I’m delighted that we have completed this road upgrade that’s increasing the capacity, safety and reducing travel time. “I’ve received feedback from parents that the school drop-off and pick-ups have been a lot smoother, taking the headache out of the morning and afternoon school runs to the nearby Meridan State College with around 2700 students.” Cr Cox has thanked the community for their patience. The project also features new dedicated cycle lanes adjacent to the traffic lanes and new signalised pedestrian crossings at the Sunset Drive and Meridan Way intersections. Shared pathways have been installed on both sides of Parklands Boulevard.

We should be proud of the way we reach over and help out in tough times, the way we rally for those who are low and how if we have it, we share it. But we also hate it when we think we might be being ripped off. And we deplore it when people do the wrong thing. Sunshine Coasters were horrified that some people opt to dump their junk at the charity bins instead of tripping to the tip, as many did over Easter. It riles us, offends us, angers us. And those who rip off charities are the lowest of the low in our culture, because we are humble about it, but we love to back an underdog and give a good person in tough times a go. A year ago, the Australian Communities Trends Report found five in six Australians give to not-for-profits and $143 billion was given that year. Two thirds of Australian givers have also donated goods, and a third of us volunteer. Last year’s disasters made corporations in Australia dig deep. Strive Philanthropy’s GivingLarge Report showed the top 50
corporate donors gave away $1.1 billion to philanthropic causes last year, up $155 million or 17 per cent on the previous year. BHP was the Big Australian in more ways than one, giving the most at $221 million, with $50 million of that going towards coronavirus research. Coles distributed $125 million and the Commonwealth Bank donated $70 million. But it is not always the big guns who give bucketloads. Who Gives a Crap donated $5.9 million to clean water and sanitation projects in developing countries last year. That’s a motsa in anyone’s lingo. Sales in its toot paper more than doubled in the 12 months to June, thanks to panic buying during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Good things come out of bad situations sometimes. But we also want to know where the donations of our hard-earned go. We don’t like it when, as recently happened, we learn that a registered charity – in this case the Church of Scientology – allegedly plays the system and shifts money to Australia because of significant tax-free profits possible here. Thinktank McCrindle researches the not-for-profit sector and recently surveyed Aussies about what was important in their charity support. The transparent reporting of administration costs is the most important characteristic of a charity according to seven in 10 givers. The survey found more than two-thirds of us want to support an organisation with a proven track record or that provides a detailed breakdown of where donations are allocated and the impact they are having. But most of all, we just want to help out. It is part of our DNA. Sometimes it just feels good to give a little.

A CLOSURE CLOSE AT HAND
Ashley Robinson isn’t impressed by people who flash their wealth and says money can’t buy class.
Sami Muirhead says deciding what to do with your loved ones’ ashes is no easy task, but this week she found the solution.
“There’s no shame in wealth my dear, Indeed, but does it not depend upon how it is carried out?” his quote is from a Jane Austen novel and it struck a particular chord in me. My interpretation of those words is that money can’t buy class. Class is something I don’t have to worry about, but I like being a casual observer of others who think they have it. I could win millions and it certainly wouldn’t move me up the social or class ladder one inch. But I am what I am and there is no changing that and funnily enough, I am quite comfortable with that. The quote reminded me of the amount of people that I have come across over the years that have acquired wealth, but not class. For the record I am not the jealous type and have no drama with anyone that has millions – good luck I say. But it does make me laugh when some of those folk think money has automatically bought them class. For instance, have you ever visited someone and as you sat on the lounge, they proceeded to tell you how much it cost? That’s usually when I ask whether they

would like to put some plastic down before I sit my poverty ridden butt on it. Have you ever been out with someone who orders the most expensive bottle of wine on the list? Those same people are the type to jump in a cab or a limo and call the driver, ‘driver’ rather than ask their name. They are also the type to tell you how much their underwear cost, which would usually bring a comment from me of, “Really, maybe you should wear them over the top of your clothes, so people know what great taste you have?” The same classy folk will also thread their belt under the label on their jeans so the rest of us know that they are wearing Gant or Ralph Lauren. I must say though, I am yet to see anyone wearing a bottle of perfume around their neck so that we all know how much it cost. As they say, money can’t buy class and it certainly can’t buy happiness and this is my favourite Chinese proverb that says it all. “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” Now in my opinion, that’s first class.

y dad’s ashes nearly ended up in our corned beef this week, which is typical of me and also something my Papa Bear would have found very funny. There has been a lot of death around us lately. Prince Phillip of course, who died at 9pm on the ninth day of the month and the 99th day of the year, when he was 99. A dear friend lost her dad this week and my own dad passed away close to a year ago. I was given one-third of his ashes. A portion went to my brother and the final portion went to my stepmother. We all got our little bit to do what we wanted with, but I just plan to keep Dad in the TV room on a shelf. He always liked TV. It is a dilemma many of us face in life: what to do with our loved one’s ashes in death? But the thing is, the funeral parlour bottled Dad up in his hideous carboard cylinder with a sunset and seagulls as the pattern on the sides. It is something straight from the eighties and it is all shades of orange ugly. It has long bugged me, so this week I finally
bought a gorgeous ginger jar with guinea fowl on the vessel to put Dad’s ashes into as his final resting place. I don’t think Dad even liked guinea fowl, but they are full of character, playful and very loyal and loud, which is exactly like him. I also bought a few extra jars with different patterns for my two beloved dog’s ashes. So, I started a sort of makeshift planting production table on the kitchen bench late in the afternoon while I had a few wines to wash away my tears. By the time my husband arrived home at night, the dinner was half-cooked on the bench, the bottle of wine was more than half-empty and my jars were half-full, with ashes over the surface. My husband looked stunned, but sprang into action and swept all the ashes into all the right jars. They now sit in their rightful spot on our shelf looking very pretty and more importantly, I want our family to look at them and remember the good times and talk about them frequently. Author, Sir Terry Pratchett once said, “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.”

MUM AND DAD BANK ON THE INCREASE Lending money to your kids to help them buy a house is a great gift, but you need to be aware of the repercussions. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.
L
ending a helping hand to your children to buy a home is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give, but the strings attached – financial, legal and family – are often complex. Since March 2020 there has been an increase in ‘the bank of mum and dad’ (BOMD) assisted purchases. The average amount advanced according to Digital Finance Analytics is $89,637. It’s difficult to pin down what is driving this increase. Perhaps it’s FOMO in a rising market? Whatever are the drivers, Pacific Law’s David Netherton has some simple advice for any parent looking to dip into their savings to help a child. “Start by determining the impact of the gift or loan on both the parent and child,” he says. “Secondly, talk to the other family members, particularly other children, so that everyone understands why you are doing it and how it’s going to work.” BOMD can either be a monetary gift or loan to a child. “Both have ramifications for parents and children,” Mr Netherton says.

A gift may result in the parent being deemed to own part of the property being acquired. Similarly, a loan repayable to the parent in the future may be deemed to have an interest rate applied giving the parent an income. Both these might ultimately impact on a parent’s pension or financial position. Loans that require the money to be repaid in the future are usually preferred by parents as they help protect the funds
from a child who separates from a partner or becomes bankrupt. However, banks often require the BOMD contribution to be a gift. Parents who declare the funds to be a gift to the bank, but want the funds repaid, should be wary of what conflict might happen in the future if there is a hostile family environment. “Thinking ahead is also important,” Mr Netherton says. “For example, if a loan

is to be forgiven on the death of the parent, this needs to be included into the parents will. “Also, if the child receiving the benefit of the loan becomes the power of attorney for the parent, this conflict of interest needs to be carefully managed, particularly if other children are involved.” In closing Mr Netherton says his best advice is for parents and children to get independent legal and financial advice so they are aware of all the impacts. “Secondly, ensure everything is in writing,” he adds.

The Sunshine Coast is now home to one of Australia’s most talented and internationally renowned tennis coaches, Simon Walsh. Sydney-born Simon has spent the last 30 years living and working overseas, mostly travelling 40 weeks a year on the Women’s Professional Tennis Circuit (The WTA Women’s Tennis Association). Simon has coached professional players at 64 Grand Slams and taken more pro players to the top 100 world rankings than any other Australian coach – 12 players in total. He has coached many leading players, including Australia’s own Grand Slam champion and former world number four, Samantha Stosur. Simon has also held the prestigious positions of national senior coach at three major tennis federations. These include the LTA (Britain), China, and Qatar and he has also been involved with the Japanese, Slovenian and Ukrainian Fed Cup teams. COVID has impacted his sport at the highest levels. Players have been unable to tral, with this scenario unlikely to change into 2022. Simon has decided to return home to Australia and make the Sunshine Coast his new base.

eef Heazlewood shocked the surfing scene in his world tour debut two years ago and now he’s eager to “take down some more big names” in his return to the big stage. The Moffat Beach talent has received an invitation to compete in the Rip Curl Narrabeen in New South Wales, after displaying good form in second-tier events this season. “I’m stoked (to be invited). I’ve put in the hard work early in the year and it’s paid off and it’s really nice to have this opportunity at such a sick location,” he says. The 21-year-old received entry into two events in 2019, when he caught the attention of surfing fans around the globe with his acrobatics and flamboyance. Heazlewood charged through the heats on debut, eliminating Sunshine Coast star Julian Wilson en route to a ninth placing at the Quiksilver Pro at the Gold Coast. He also finished 13th at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. He’s determined to rattle the cage again, after being called up to replace injured star Kelly Slater. “Hopefully, I can have another dream run and take down some names,” he says.
“I want to (beat them) and be at least one heat better than I was at the Gold Coast. “But also, I just want to have fun. That’s the main thing. I want to put on a good show for everyone and provide some good entertainment.” The goofy footer believes the surf at Narrabeen should provide him with opportunities. “It’s a pretty good left (hander) and when it’s on there are some good barrels and turn sections, and good airs too.” World tour organisers offered him an invitation, after noticing his great form during summer. He claimed four top-five finishes from five events on the second tier qualifying series, including victory at the Great Lakes Pro near Forster. Heazlewood says he’s becoming more tactical and composed during heats. “I’ve been working on that a lot,” he says. “I feel like I’ve got my surfing pretty much there, but it’s about making smart decisions in heats under pressure. “I feel like that’s coming together. “I went big when I needed to in the QS events.”
Karla Pretorius admitted to having FOMO in South Africa earlier this year as she watched her Sunshine Coast Lightning teammates hit pre-season training via Zoom. Now reunited with the team in person, she is motivated to take her game up another level from 2020. Head coach Kylee Byrne says the influence of Pretorius and fellow South African Phumza Maweni has been immediately felt since returning to the group in mid-March. “The change in team dynamics and on court performance and benchmarks has risen since they re-entered the group,” Byrne says.

“They got out of quarantine and we put them straight on a plane to Sydney, so it was a big welcome back to Lightning but they ran with it and have raised the standard of the team.” One day after completing quarantine the two players were flown to Sydney to compete in Lightning’s three trial matches against Giants Netball, Melbourne Vixens and NSW Swifts.Pretorius will participate in Lightning’s two final practice matches before the Suncorp Super Netball season commences on Saturday May 1. The top end of the Barwon Banks and the bottom of the Hards has been good for snapper with Caloundra Wide doing well for pearl perch. Long tail have been in good numbers up and down the coast with Caloundra and Coolum having the better schools. Bream are on the go in the rivers ATM and the Mooloolah and Maroochy systems the best in and around pontoons and bridges. Noosa has had the best reports of trevally and mangrove jack with Woods Bay getting the better reports. Beaches have been quiet but a few reports of bream and dart along Kawana at dusk early night time. Borumba has had the best reports of bass with jig style lures worked to schooling fish in the deeper water.
