From the editor Do you recall the first books you ever read?

What journey did they take you on? How did you feel? Does the thought of them bring back a little nostalgia for those days?

This week our cover story features the Voices on the Coast youth literary festival and we note that this is its 25th year since inception. This year, Voices on the Coast will be held online, and organisers are confident it will not diminish the power of this unique cultural event to inspire the love of reading in young people.

It makes me happy to report that the printed word is still a favourite with young readers. Certainly, e-readers play a big part in the literary landscape, but international sales figures reveal print is still very popular.

Researchers say it’s the tactile experience we value – the touch, the feel, along with illustrations that give us a warm glow of

satisfaction. Personally, I also enjoy the look of a well-stocked bookshelf. The idea that there is always another amazing story to be read is a gift and it’s very reassuring to hear the next generation agrees.

Our letters page brings us new floral emblem entries. Thanks to Buderim resident Kennedy Fox, who has brought up the name of Sunshine Coast botanical artist, conservationist and a founding member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, the late Kathleen McArthur and has also shared with us one of her watercolours. I welcome your contributions. However, the letters page is a space for a variety of voices, and it is pleasing to see it is being used to express opinions on a range of subjects. I trust you enjoy the read.

CSIRO TO DEVELOP NEW MEDICINAL CANNABIS

Respect, protect & reflect The Prime Minister has called for more respect for women at an International Women’s Day event in Canberra last week.

cott Morrison says he wants to live in a society where women are respected, calling on Australians to “respect, protect and reflect”.

“Because from the disrespect of women or failure to respect women, all the other challenges flow,” the Prime Minister told an International Women’s Day event in Canberra last week.

“Violence, discrimination, deprivation, abuse, assault, lack of recognition, not hearing. It all starts with the failure of respect for women.”

Acknowledging the allegations by Brittany Higgins and three other women about sexual assault by a Liberal staffer, he said it had been a very traumatic few weeks for the people who work in parliament.

“But even more traumatic obviously for those who are subject to those issues.”

Mr Morrison said there was no

substitute for the rule of law as one of the key protections for women.

He says progress is occurring and urged the party leaders, politicians of all stripes and top bureaucrats in the room not to become despondent about failures.

“Let’s not forget the amazing work, particularly of women serving in the front lines of our health systems, our emergency services systems, and thank them and reflect on the fact that we are a nation that is blessed by strong women over our history,” he said.

Head of United Nations Women Australia Janelle Weissman, host of the event, said she was distressed at the allegations of rape inside Parliament House and welcomed the investigations.

“No one should have to choose between earning an income and being safe,” she said. “There is no excuse for violence against women.”

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said the past few weeks were a stark reminder of how much there was still to do to fix inequality.

He also said it was heartbreaking that Ms Higgins had to give up her dream job.

“We cannot let this building be the blight on the hill,” Mr Albanese said.

He wants structural change in the tax system that brings disincentives for women working, and backs affordable childcare as another important solution.

“If you fix it, you fix productivity.

You don’t have that handbrake that is there,” he says.

Aunty Violet, during her Welcome to Country, pointed out the issue of women in leadership “isn’t just about the high flyers”.

“Without women leading in communities, we wouldn’t have as much as we do.”

The CSIRO has been granted a licence to partner with local manufacturers to drive the development of new medicinal cannabis products.

The global market for medicinal cannabis therapeutics has a projected worth of $US44 billion ($55 billion) by 2024.

CSIRO scientist Adjunct Professor Peter Duggan says the new licence places the national science agency at the forefront of research into the development of new cannabis medicines.

“Around the world, researchers are exploring the potential for medicinal cannabis to help with conditions such as epilepsy and the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy treatment, multiple sclerosis and chronic pain,” he says.

“We had been able to do early-stage work with cannabis, but the new licence will enable us to develop cannabis-derived cannabinoid medicines using innovative extraction, refinement and formulation techniques.”

The experienced botanical extracts team at CSIRO will develop cutting-edge cannabis products in its state-of-the-art lab.

CSIRO is the only independent research institute in Australia able to develop drug-manufacturing protocols in the medicinal cannabis space. This work will bridge the gap between the growing of plants and manufacture of medicines, with researchers developing the manufacturing protocols and preparing the first prototype products before transferring the technology to manufacturers for large-scale production.

The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes is highly regulated in Australia.

In December, the Therapeutic Goods Administration approved over-the-counter pharmacy sales of a low dose form of cannabidiol.

Author Deano Yipadee will take part in the literary festival

Raise your Voice While the Voices on the Coast literary festival will be delivered differently this year, it will still continue to inspire young readers. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

S

o, who has the temerity to call themselves by the quizzical name of Deano Yipadee and claim to give you tips on writing a ‘Best Smeller’? Who would laugh with a fellow with the somewhat ordinary name of Chris Collin, about the very extraordinary topic of The Things You Can Do With Blue Whale Poo? The answer is, some very successful and popular authors who have let go of conventional perspectives and embraced the wild and imaginative. The creative folk who dive deep into their minds to find adventures, fantasy and fun and form into children’s and young adult literature. It’s the stuff that young people or, in fact, any age group (who have not released their inner child) find thoroughly entertaining.

This week is a special week for all those people, because despite the limitations of COVID, the literary festival Voices on the Coast is going ahead and, similar to many other events, is being served up via an online stage by Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

It’s now 25 years since the awardwinning festival began its program of bringing together some of Australia’s finest established and emerging young adult writers and performers for young people to engage in workshops, book talks, storytelling, poetry and drama.

More than 240 individual presenters and 18 groups have participated since the festival’s inception with half of them Queensland born or based and the other half from interstate.

Kelly Dunham co-ordinates Immanuel Lutheran College’s Innovation Hub (this is what we older readers formerly called the school library) and has undertaken the role of Voices on the Coast co-ordinator since 2009. She says the aim of the festival is to inspire young people to enjoy the world of reading, writing, drawing and performing through their experiences each year. A special part of her role is author selection.

“It’s quite a task,” she says. “Choosing authors is a juggling act.”

A major goal of the selection process is to be as inclusive as possible.

“It’s heartening to see how many students are engaging with reading and the festival” Kelly Dunham, Voices on the Coast

“We choose authors for young and older children, male and female, the voracious and reluctant reader,” she says.

She believes much of the festival’s success lies in its program format that allows children direct engagement with the authors. This year’s online event will also include Q&A’s with students and other interactive events.

Additionally, she enthusiastically notes that in terms of books sales for children and young adults, Australia is leading the world.

“It’s booming,” she says. “It used to be said that when electronic books came out no one would want to read print.

However, the choice goes for print.”

Her personal reward for contributing to the festival’s creation is simple.

“What always gets me thrilled is to see the children’s faces when they engage with authors.”

However, the practical results are more far-reaching. According to some parents, this is what it takes to ignite an interest in reading: “I’ve heard parents say their children didn’t really like reading, myweeklypreview.com.au

but after attending Voices on the Coast, they’ve found a favourite author and they’re reading their books.

“It’s heartening to see how many students are engaging with reading and the festival,” Ms Dunham says with a smile.

Of course, in 2021 COVID is not the only competition for the printed word. Social media, games and phones are hot competitors in the daily schedule.

However, in her daily life, Ms Dunham sees many dedicated young book readers.

This week, Year 12 Immanuel Lutheran College student Abbey Williams, who has attended the festival since Year four, is enjoying her final opportunity of attending workshops and author lectures as a student.

Though it won’t be the same this year, Abbey says over the years, she has particularly enjoyed the interaction with other school students who have attended the festival.

She has also enjoyed meeting her favourite author Lynette Noni and finds a connection with the writing styles of young adult authors.

“I like the way they draw their inspiration from real world experiences,” she says.

Abbey is looking at furthering her education in health science fields, but as she says, “You always need writing.”

Blake Darlison is another Immanuel Year 12 student who has a long history with the festival.

“I have been attending since Year six,” Blake says.

“I’ve been a visitor’s guide and volunteered with the introduction of authors.”

Although sport plays a major part in his life, Blake still finds the time to read and usually borrows books from the library.

“I read quite a bit,” he says.

“Morris Gleitzman is my favourite and I like Peter Carnavas.

“And I’ve just read the Cherub series [by Robert Muchamore].

The Immanuel Lutheran College Innovation Hub is home to thousands of learning resources including various platforms and books, including online portals, journals and databases.

Yet as Ms Dunham says, “Literature and reading is the basis of everything – no matter what platform or source.

And reading is never boring.”

Voices on the Coast offers a unique cultural experience to regional youth and the festival has become a muchanticipated event for students from years four to 12 (aged nine to 18 years) along the Sunshine Coast and from the adjacent inland areas.

She has participated a few times before and not only does she love talking about her award-winning books at the festival, but as a past student of Mountain Creek State High School, she also gets a kick out of meeting students from her old school.

It’s certainly encouraging for students to see the award-winning career path Ms Noni has carved through the creation of her novels, especially since she is currently Australia’s number one YA fiction seller and many of the students at the festivals have read her novels. Having a face-toface meeting with her has a special relevance for students.“You’re really human,” is one of the responses students have greeted her with.

In her early years, Ms Noni says becoming a YA author was never a career goal. “I studied journalism, academic writing and human behaviour at university,” she says.

Moreover, she wasn’t a particularly obsessed reader, rather it was the desire to “write the book that I wanted to read” that underpinned the start of her writing. Her five-book series The Medoran Chronicles commenced in 2015 and set the tone for her fantasy adventures past and future. The success of these books has meant an ongoing demand for further novels and to satisfy her young readers, Ms Noni has become a prolific writer. This year, fans will be pleased to know she has not one, but two books being released. The Prison Healer is coming out in April in Australia and The Gilded Cage is expected to be out in October.

After hundreds of responses from the community, the council has endorsed a heritage plan for the region.

unshine Coast Council has endorsed a 10-year heritage plan to protect and engage our residents and visitors in the region’s cultural heritage.

The new plan builds on the success of the inaugural 2015-2020 Heritage Plan covering areas of knowledge, conservation, support,

communication and advocacy.

Community portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says understanding our cultural heritage is extremely important to our identity as a regional community and the new plan will ensure our community keeps a close connection with our past as we forge a bright future.

“As we share stories, we gain a better

understanding and appreciation of our region’s history and how we fit into that framework,” Cr Baberowski says.

“I’m confident that this plan reflects our desire to protect, manage and grow our unique regional culture and identity.

“I’d like to thank all those who took the time to provide their expertise and feedback throughout the development of the plan.

“In November last year, we invited our community to have their say on the draft plan and they did – we received more than 600 responses.

“More than 90 per cent of respondents rated cultural heritage as very important or important and this, together with detailed feedback on individual strategies, helped shape the final plan.”

The Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan will now inform the development of the annual Heritage Levy Program, funded by the Heritage Levy.

A new financial support program for women experiencing family violence will help victim survivors to be safe at home, leave abusive situations and rebuild their lives. The Domestic and Family Violence No Interest Loans (NIL) program offers women conversations which include information about government supports, hardship provisions from utility companies and others as well as access to $2000 loans without interest or fees.

The program will help with loans for renting and bond, furniture and whitegoods, removal and transport costs, car repairs, legal and security costs and other household expenses.

Anyone applying for a NIL is firstly offered a financial conversation, which may include information about negotiating with service providers, banks or landlords to have debts waived or referrals to other services such as family and domestic violence, legal, mental health and financial counselling.

To be eligible for NILs, women must have experienced family and domestic violence in the past 10 years, be aged over 18, an Australia citizen/permanent resident/visa holder and able to pay back a loan if a NILs loan is issued. SENTIMENT PUNCHES HIGHER Business and consumer sentiment have seen a significant recovery from their pandemic falls. In fact, both measures of sentiment are now better than they were ahead of the pandemic. With improving economic prospects, low interest rates, some industries, such as hospitality and tourism, in the earlier stages of re-opening, and strong rebounds post-crisis, there is scope for high sentiment levels to be sustained, if not improve.

This is a positive development for at least two reasons: 1) it suggests a recovery in consumer spending; and 2) it is consistent with stronger corporate profitability. Improved consumer spending and corporate earnings are some of the key drivers behind our outlook for a stronger domestic

economy and equity market this year.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment survey has risen above the neutral level of 100. The survey is not only showing the optimists outnumber the pessimists, but also by an amount that is above the long-term historical average.

The consumer sentiment index is also sitting about 10 points above levels seen in the months prior to the pandemic.

Almost all of the survey’s components are close to or better than their preCOVID-19 levels and long-term averages, including: 1) assessments of economic conditions in one year and five years; and 2) family finances now and in one year.

Although rising, the only component which is still below its long-term average is the assessment of whether it is time to buy a major household item.

Consumption has been severely disrupted by COVID-19, particularly in services, such as tourism and hospitality.

Real household spending as of the September 2020 quarter was still down 6.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY). However, if the current level of consumer sentiment can be sustained, it should be consistent with real household spending growth of four per cent YoY. One of the key arguments we make for a recovery in the Australian economy this year is an improvement in consumption activity.

Likewise, measures of business sentiment have also strengthened. The National Australia Bank survey indicates business confidence and their assessment of conditions are both above average. The recovery has been broad-based across sectors, although conditions in mining, manufacturing, finance, and retail have shown considerable improvement compared with the recreational and personal services and construction industries. Overall, business feedback around profitability, employment and trading conditions are all above their historical averages.

There is a strong relationship between business sentiment and earnings expectations. Current levels of business confidence have previously been associated with earnings growth of 10 to 20 per cent. There is scope to sustain, or even improve, high sentiment levels, with some industries, such as hospitality, tourism and construction, being in the earlier stages of re-opening and still catching up to the rest of the economy.

WAGES EASE AS BUSINESS INVESTMENT JUMPS Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the average annual wage is now just over $89,000. But at an average weekly rate of $1712 as of November, this was down 0.1 per cent when compared with May, the first time there has been a fall during a six-month period. It followed an unusually large 3.3 per cent increase in the six months to May. ABS head of labour statistics Bjorn Jarvis says May saw the greatest impact on the jobs market from the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a higher share of job losses in lower-paid jobs and industries than those with higher earnings – raising the wage average.

“The fall in average earnings in November highlights the extent of recovery in low-paid jobs, hours and earnings since May,” he says.

Business investment unexpectedly jumped three per cent in the final three months of 2020.

New private capital expenditure (capex) grew to $29.4 billion in the December quarter. However, annual capex was still down 7.5 per cent compared with a year earlier.

The social issue The Viral stage production asks important questions of anyone with a phone and a social media account.

W

hen two young women attacked a legally blind man on a Gold Coast bus in 2014, a 13-year-old girl travelling on the bus filmed the attack.

When it was subsequently posted online, it went viral. The incident raised many questions – is it better to intervene in such a situation, or film it for evidence? Is filming it and posting it online a violation of privacy, or a community service?

These and other questions form the basis for a compelling stage production called Viral, coming to the Sunshine Coast on March 26. Its creators, Hayden Jones and Sam Foster of Gold Coast theatre company Shock Therapy Productions, have won numerous awards for the show, which has enjoyed a successful five-year run.

Shock Therapy Productions co-founder and co-writer of Viral, Mr Jones says the production has exceeded expectations. In the 2016 Matilda Awards it won Best New Australian Work and Best Actor (Mr Foster) and in 2019, Mr Jones and Mr Foster took it

Mr Jones says they wanted to explore the line between disassociation and raising awareness about events of racism, abuse, violence and sexual assault in the community. They raise the question: is it better to record these activities and post them online, or step in and stop them from happening in the first place? But they were aware of the risk of coming across as too preachy for a teenage audience.

“Sam and I both have teenage kids and we’re aware they will sniff that out immediately,” says Mr Jones. “Part of our ideology in theatre making is we don’t want to come with answers.

“We performed Viral recently at a school in a really tough demographic and they love it. It keeps reaffirming to us that we managed to land it in the right place.

We try and pose questions and make provocations, rather than tell people what the outcome might be.

“In the past, when we’ve performed it at venues, we find the parents can relate to the adult characters, the kids relate to the

“We didn’t think we’d still be performing it five years later,” Mr Jones says. “It still feels really relevant. I think what’s unique about this show is it sort of has a dual target of adolescents and adults. We’ve managed to pitch it on both levels.”

Mr Jones performs in the show along with Mr Foster and has worked as an actor, director, writer, producer and workshop facilitator. With an extensive background working in youth theatre, children’s theatre and theatre in education, he brought a wealth of experience to Viral.

“Sam and myself wrote the show for ourselves to perform,” he says. “The style comes from epic theatre by Bertolt Brecht.

We play about 25 characters and we never change costume or leave the stage.

“Viral investigates the role of social media in modern society and the role it plays in how we engage with various situations. The event on the Gold Coast triggered it off.”

Mr Jones says the theatre version of the show is a much bigger production than the school version, with 13 projection surfaces, more audio visual equipment and multimedia to create a beautiful stage.

“It sounds really heavy and there are confronting aspects to it, but the show is also very animated and comical,” he says.

“We’re dealing with quite a serious subject that can be quite heavy, so we try to offset it by finding as much humour as possible.”

While many theatre companies have struggled through COVID, Mr Jones says Shock Therapy has stayed afloat.

“We’ve been very lucky; the Queensland government has been pretty amazing with the amount of grants and funding opportunities we’ve had. We’ve been successful in a number of those, which allowed us to pivot and still have projects to work on with online streaming.

“We have a few streams of what we do,” he says. “We have an education program with about five shows we take into schools.

We run workshops and do festivals and performance installations. We’re a bit unique as a company in that we do it all and we’re always trying to extend ourselves.

“We both spent time as actors, sitting around waiting for people to give us permission to do what we wanted to do,” he says. “We got fed up and [said], let’s do what we want. It has worked out well.”

I am delighted with the International Olympic Committee’s announcement on 25 February granting preferred host status for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This is a significant milestone and is the product of six years of work started by the Council of Mayors South East Queensland. Graham Quirk – then Lord Mayor of Brisbane – and myself were the first government officials to meet with Thomas Bach, president of the IOC in Sydney on 30 April 2015 to push hosting the Games in south east Queensland.

There is considerably more work to be done to secure the event, and the potential to host the Games will be a powerful tool in south east Queensland’s economic resurgence and deliver an incredible boost to our tourism industry – along with many other contributors to the games’ supply chain.

For me personally, securing the hosting rights should accelerate investment in critical infrastructure, leaving a lasting legacy for Queensland and for our community.

A WORTHY TREE

SUNFLOWER POEM

I have looked on the internet and found no evidence but I had thought the Sunshine Coast had a floral emblem – the black bean tree (Castanospermum australe). This is a worthy tree as the flowers are spectacular and the tree is native to the shire.

I sit in awe in the presence of the sunflower, its beauty and radiance of a sun’s reflection. The tall stems of large green leaves, leading to a burst of sunlight from the head, yellow petals surround the heart and spread like the light to all around. Sunflowers, sunlight, somebody sure got it right.

My sunflower is certainly not mean, it shares its beauty and happiness for all to see. May the strength and longevity in the sunflower reign in me. Spread your seeds of joy to all, if only I could be so bold. I need not grow old. Happy sunflowers!

I would enthusiastically support Christmas bells (Blandfordia grandiflora) as a Sunshine Coast floral emblem. I remember walking around the area now called Wurtulla in the 1970s, and seeing them in abundance. It would also be a fitting tribute to our local conservationists Kathleen McArthur and her sister Judy Nelson-Gracie, who sadly passed away only a few weeks ago, and who were great advocates for preserving our local native species.

The sun orchid (Thelymitra pauciflora) is one of the prettiest and elusive flowers of the Sunshine Coast. They regrow in the same positions each year and enthusiasts know where to find them each spring.

More commonly, the orchid is blue but they can be pink or white and they grow in a wide variety of habitats including open forest, woodland, heathy woodland, heathland, grassland and coastal scrublands, usually on welldrained sand with some clay. There is much more to know about them including discoveries of new subspecies.

The Christmas bell is a Christmas flower and is already celebrated for this as it appears each December and still lots come through near Noosa Junction in the Girraween Nature Refuge. Another interesting plant is the dwarf swamp banksia found on Mt Emu. Mt Emu was once an island and has other unique plants such as the Mt Emu she-oak, given its isolated origins.

I vote the sun orchid as it comes in colours. And like our turtle nesting on the beaches, these orchids need to be located, kept an eye on and celebrated.

I have huge concerns about the council’s proposal to remove two lanes of Nicklin Way and add light rail along the stretch.

The council has been quietly planning this behind our backs and we are not going to have public consultation but thankfully some councillors have stood up and insisted that the public be consulted. If the light rail goes ahead then council will give the go-ahead to developers to build high-rises up to 400 metres each side along Nicklin Way. Anyone that uses Nicklin Way will know that traffic is already gridlocked during much of the day and if we lose two lanes plus have thousands more people living along the stretch it will be horrendous. Light rail at the Gold Coast is running at a loss because few people use the system and consequently rates have increased to cover this loss. I agree with the proposed heavy rail that has been planned for many years and runs along the back of Kawana Island, but we say NO to light rail that will affect our lifestyle.

The Wildflower Festival was born in 1967 by Kathleen McArthur, an artist, author, environmentalist and founding member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland.”

got invited by a mate to go game fishing the other day but my standard reply is always, “No thanks, I don’t do anything where I can’t go home when I want to,” which I always thought was because I am careful with what company I keep more than anything else. Probably because I am happy being by myself is more accurate. Well that was what I always thought, but maybe there is more to it after reading this week that since COVID, fishing is far more popular.

That made me think about growing up at my Nanna’s house in Anzac Ave Maroochydore every weekend and every holiday. Dad had his boat tied up near what is now Broadsea Ave, but in those days boats were just tied to trees along the bank.

When they started building the rock wall, Dad’s boat headed up river and eventually ended up halfway up the Cod Hole, but there was easy access for many years, so I was always fishing.

The negative was bream season, when Dad would come home with 50 or 60 bream that I had to bloody scale if he managed to get hold of me before I leapt the back fence to get away. Scaling them was one thing,

then I had to eat them for the next week or so. But just the other day I was reading about fishing, and I remembered why I don’t like boats or fishing.

Dad and I were down the river mouth, I was about 11. I had already eaten lunch and with no fish biting, was bored out of my head. Dad was just

I started playing with his favourite knife and tapping it on the gunnel, until he told me to be careful with it. I said: “Like this?”, pretending to throw it overboard. Only problem was, it hit the side of the boat and over it went. I can remember two things, how clear the water was as it sunk to the bottom and Dad’s reaction. That’s why I don’t like boats or fishing and why I am a fairly good swimmer.

leep is but a dream. There is a club of us on the Coast who battle with insomnia and live the life of a vampire pacing the halls at night because sleep is so elusive.

I struggle to switch off my brain, which is funny as I struggle to switch it on during daylight hours. And on top of that, we have a busy household through the night with young kids up and down and a pack of dogs with all sorts of issues including one with dementia who barks a lot and needs a hallway light left on for him. One dog has anxiety, which is ironic as his life is one of luxury. And a third busy little bossy boots (the poodle) wakes me up at 4am to go for his walk.

The common prize for the fur and human babies is to sleep in our bed. I use the word ‘our’ to describe the bed I share with my husband. But we all know it really belongs to the dogs and the kids. I am not sure where my poor disgruntled hubby is most nights. He is often relegated to the one of the kids’ single beds or the foot stool at the end of his own bed. His own bed is too full of little heartbeats for him to squeeze in. He could even be on the dog

bed downstairs. One night he even tried to sleep in the back seat of our car.

Nothing surprises me in this battle to be top dog in the king size bed. Recently my six-year-old boy came home from school and was enthralled with a soundtrack they played for all the Grade 1 kids after lunch that day. It is called Kids Zen Yoga and it is

I turned on the lavenderscented infuser and hit play on the Zen playlist. Stop judging me! But all the kids and dogs drifted off to sleep. Now the bald poodle howls for me to turn on the kid’s Zen yoga music soundtrack at bed time.

I could not make this stuff up. My husband must be considering leaving me.

Anyway, now I am off to the cafe to get another double espresso to bumble through the day.

William Ashworth is back on the Sunshine Coast after spending a year in Norway as an exchange student

W

hen William Ashworth set off from Australia on January 17, 2020 bound for a once-in-a-lifetime youth exchange in Norway, he had no idea just what his year abroad would hold.

From the excitement of seeing snow for the first time, the challenges of learning a new language and being stuck

in lockdown more than 15,000 from home, William’s year overseas was an experience he will never forget.

The 16-year-old Immanuel Lutheran College student participated in Rotary Youth Exchange, a year-long program where he lived with three host families and immersed himself in a different culture and way of life.

“I was really excited because I’d never seen snow before, so that was a big part of picking Norway,” William says.

“I wanted to pick somewhere with a different language, a different culture and enjoy living in the colder environment.”

Based in the Norwegian constitution town of Eidsvoll, 45 minutes from the capital Oslo, William’s plans were to attend school, participate in camps and soak in as much culture as possible.

“In those first few weeks I went skiing for the first time – cross country and downhill skiing,” he says. “I was in the sports stream at school, so I did a lot of sport, which I really enjoyed.

“I had a lot of fun, I got involved in basketball, which I’d never played before, and just had a really fun time making friends.”

But the spread of COVID-19 quickly threw a spanner in the works for William.

“I was on a camp in Oslo as COVID started to set in,” he says. “With me, the conversation that I had with my parents and my host families in Norway was that it was safer for me to stay in Norway rather than travelling home, especially at the time when no one really knew what COVID was exactly.

“I went into lockdown and I did online school, and I was a bit nervous knowing that if I wanted to go home or something happened that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to go home. But I was very set on staying in Norway.”

William says the three months of

lockdown was a great way to bond with his host family, often spending their days hiking in nearby forests, before the easing of restrictions in time for Norwegian Constitution Day on May 17.

While abroad, one of William’s biggest goals was to learn Norwegian. “It was quite difficult to speak Norwegian at home with my host families because their English is so good,” he says.

“I was learning most of my Norwegian at school because you are trying to fit in with conversations with your friends.

“When COVID hit it was a big setback for me because I lost that opportunity to be speaking at school.

“I’m still trying to learn it now. My phone’s in Norwegian so I keep that little bit in my head. I still message all my friends in Norwegian as well.”

William says he embraced all he could during the year and the experience has left him with a new sense of maturity.

“I guess being a lot more independent for that 12 months in Norway I had the opportunity to be my own person and make my own life for myself.

“Also, the knowledge that I’ve done a year overseas by myself and anything compared to that is not going to be as difficult, knowing that I lived through that experience in another country, with COVID and everything.

“It’s a really great opportunity and I would recommend it to everyone.

“I think it has definitely been the most amazing year of my life.”

NEW OFF-LEASH AREA A new fenced dog off-leash area will soon be installed at Muller Park, Bli Bli. The fenced area follows a council community consultation process after 204 completed surveys and a community meeting where 40 locals gave their knowledge, thoughts and ideas.

Dog walkers will have 24-hour access to the new 2500-square metre fenced section, and dogs will be allowed off leash within the wider park after 4pm and before 8am daily to reflect with community feedback.

The dog off-leash area will be installed at the northern end of the park and will include seating, rubbish bin, water tap and shade trees.

Work will begin in late February and is due for completion in April.

C

oast teenager Felicity Yeates is ready to lose her long locks as she takes part in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The 17-year-old will honour her late grandmother and contribute to a great cause on March 5, alongside several schoolmates at Immanuel Lutheran College.

“I’m quite excited to do it,” she says. “I have quite thick hair, which can be hard to deal with and I’m really excited to see what it looks like and to experience it.

“I take two hours straightening my hair, so it does take a bit of time out my day.”

Felicity is shaving her hair in memory of her grandmother, Maureen Horrigan, who died, aged 73, last year after battling a brain tumour, lymphoma and pancreatic cancer.

“We moved to the Coast [from Brisbane] to be near her after she was diagnosed,” Felicity says. “We went to her house every afternoon. She was an English teacher so she helped us do our study and would check on us.

Felicity’s mum Amanda Yeates says it is heart-warming to see her daughter prepared to shave her long hair.

“I’m unbelievably proud,” she says. “It’s a huge thing for her to do. She’s got very long, thick hair at the moment and one of the things we were certainly aware of when Mum was unwell is how much your hair is a part of your identity and self-image and how you feel about yourself, and how difficult it is when people are going through cancer treatment, because a lot of that identity is lost.”

Every year, more than 17,000 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and about 20,000 World’s Greatest Shave participants shave, cut or colour their hair.

Funds raised help support families facing blood cancer and scientists to continue their search for more effective ways to diagnose and treat the diseases.

Hair is recycled into wigs and made into ‘hair brooms’ to soak up oil spills.

The club’s Sandra Robinson says the inspiration for the quilt came about to keep members busy during last year’s lockdown, with some members enjoying the challenge of learning a new skill.

“Each member embroidered a patch using the sashiko stitches, or Japanese embroidery, so each member of the club contributed to the project,” she says.

“The end result is very pleasing and

members are very proud of their efforts considering that some of them have never attempted to embroider anything.

“It’s amazing how excited some of the ladies were to complete the challenge.”

Ms Robinson says members Cindy Arbuthnot and Lorraine Raison then spent many hours sewing the quilt together.

rilliant yellow flowers and butterflies now provide an inviting burst of colour at Nambour’s Drop-In & Op Shop.

Local artist Isabelle Heaton has been busy creating the masterpiece with thanks to Street Art Nambour.

Op Shop team member Sande Bamford says the new feature has instantly brightened the existing space at 22 National Park Road.

“We have always had a peaceful welcoming space for people who drop in for a cuppa and chat, but now there is an excitement we hadn’t expected, thanks to Izzy’s vibrant mural.”

The store will soon open a sewing space for locals to do their own repairs or attend a learn-to-sew class, but Ms Bamford is looking for someone to service several donated sewing machines.

“When people heard we were planning to offer free learn-to-sew classes we were inundated with sewing machines,” Ms Bamford says.

“It was overwhelming support, but some haven’t seen the light of day for a

long time, and they would benefit from a good going over.”

SKATE PART IS COMING Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders will soon see their skate park design become reality with construction beginning on a new Dicky Beach concrete playscape in early March. As part of the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan, stage one works will reflect the SS Dicky wreck’s significance to the local area and include open spaces and much-needed community facilities.

“I’m also really excited that the SS Dicky propeller will be reinstated to highlight our history,” councillor Terry Landsberg says.

“During the construction period, the existing 20-year-old skate park will be closed while it is demolished to make way for the new one.”

The upgrade includes new public amenities, picnic shelter and pathways, beach showers, park lighting, furniture such as seating, drinking fountain, bike parking, bins and landscaping and is expected to be completed in early September.

CCTC TO GET NEW CHAIRS Caloundra’s Chorale and Theatre Company is purchasing much-needed new chairs for patrons thanks to a Sunshine Coast Council grant. Celebrating 50 years in 2020, the company decided to thank its loyal patrons with a comfort upgrade but hit a roadblock when forced closures meant no income.

“CCTC was determined to go forward and worked with the [council] Major Grants Program to get funding for the chairs,” company president Julie Marks says.

The $9000 grant will help buy 100 new chairs. CCTC is a volunteer-run not-for-profit group and stages more than 12 performances each year at the company’s community theatre in Wurtulla and the Caloundra Community Senior Centre. “Our patrons just love our shows, and we love them,” Ms Marks says. “We feel like they are part of our family and we will do anything to entertain them and give them a good experience.”

SWIM SCHOOL OPENS AT STOCKLAND BARINGA SHOPPING CENTRE

he John Wallace Swim School has opened its doors to the Aura community and neighbouring suburbs.

Located in the Stockland Baringa Shopping Centre, swim school manager Kristy Perkins says programs will cater for babies as young as eight weeks, through to a development squad designed for teenagers as well as adult learn-to-swim classes.

“The John Wallace Swim School has been delivering learn-to-swim lessons on the Coast for over 40 years,” she says.

“As a family-based business and as the eldest daughter of John and Vicki Wallace, I have been running our family business for over 15 years. While being a learn-toswim instructor for just shy of 20 years now, my passion for this industry only grows stronger.”

The Baringa centre includes a heated 18-metre by 10-metre indoor pool, and Ms Perkins says the water quality is one of the best on the Coast.

“Not only is our system environmentally friendly, but our saltwater system will also feel like you are swimming in fresh water and won’t leave you smelling like an indoor chlorinated pool all day.”

The space will offer private swimming lessons, fitness classes and more to benefit the community, however, it is not open as a public pool.

All school-aged children can receive a free swim assessment, and lessons for babies up to six months are free.

The council received a Commendation for Excellence in Research and Innovation at the recent Stormwater Queensland Excellence Awards. “The

Storm Watered Street Tree Trial diverts storm water from our roads and kerbs by cutting the kerb and channel and diverting part of the flow towards the roots of the street trees,” councillor Terry Landsberg says. “This delivers water and nutrients directly to the trees.”

MEETING PLACE CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY Community groups around Beerwah will soon have a new location to gather, with construction officially underway on the new Beerwah Community Meeting Place.

Sunshine Coast Council is constructing the new facility thanks to the state government’s Unite and Recover community stimulus package.

“This new facility is a fantastic opportunity in our community, helping to create a space for locals to come together,” member for Caloundra Jason Hunt says. “The Beerwah Community Meeting Place will be a real asset for our

community and by investing in it we’re investing in our community.”

When completed, it will include a range of flexible meeting rooms, an outdoor meeting room, a ‘green’ arcade and kitchenette. Previously, groups only had one small meeting place or large hall to use for meetings.

The new space will be the fourth element of the Beerwah precinct, now comprising a library, hall, meeting space and parklands.

Construction is expected to be finished by late June 2021.

Exercising outdoors isn’t going to be an amazing all-ailments panacea. Any exercise is better than none, so if it’s easiest for you to pop in to the gym on your lunch break or do some squats in front of the TV, don’t sweat it. There are numerous studies showing that all exercise can be great for your mood and mental health, regardless of where you do it.

t would be easy to think ‘green exercise’ is another health craze, but ‘green exercise’ is actually a phenomenon that researchers have been studying for some years.

It turns out that exercising in the presence of nature can have health benefits beyond getting your blood pumping.

Studies show that exercising in natural environments can have positive effects on self-esteem and improve your mood, and the effect is especially noticed in people with mental illnesses like depression and anxiety.

There has rightfully been a renewed focus on mental health and wellbeing recently.

Some of the certainties that we previously took for granted have been taken away, and our social networks have proved to be indispensable for many of us.

While the emphasis on mental wellbeing is to be welcomed, we also need to consider that many patients in our community are living with another issue that tends to be overlooked: pain.

Recent coverage has shown that back and neck pain or even sciatica, ‘electric shocks’, nerve pain and pins and needles affect many patients who simply ‘live with it’. While that is certainly reasonable for some, many others dislike the adverse effects on quality of life and limitations on activity that these problems can cause.

Usually, treatment from your GP or physio can help but some patients require referral to a neurosurgeon to make sure that all options have been explored before accepting living with pain as the ‘new normal’.

All treatments carry risks and benefits, and your doctor is best placed to guide you.

It is common for disputes to arise in business, and the usual reaction is to engage a lawyer. Animosity levels can then quickly escalate, and business relationships are often ruined. Disputes can be highly stressful, financially draining and damaging to relationships as litigation can continue for years with no guarantee of success.

However, a properly managed dispute can be an opportunity for positive change.

People who engage in mediation to resolve disputes are more likely to be able to maintain business relationships and move forward in a productive way.

TICKS AND MEAT ALLERGY People living on the Sunshine Coast who spend anytime outside in the bush or areas of longer grass are likely to find themselves with a tick. Previously the procedure for removing ticks often included using kerosine, nail polish, petroleum jelly, heat and often tweezers. This almost invariably caused the tick to become distressed, and inject more of their saliva into the person, which could produce severe allergic reactions, even anaphylaxis in some extreme cases. Such removal techniques would also often leave the head of the tick embedded in the skin, with a potential for significant irritation and possibly infection.

Now the recommended treatment for embedded ticks by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) is to kill them while they are still attached to the human by freezing them.

This can be done by using dimethylether found in commercial products such as Wart Off or Skin Tag Remover. The tick can then be brushed off about 10 minutes later.

Small ticks can be treated with an antiscabies cream containing permethrin, such as Lyclear.

While ticks have always been annoying and uncomfortable, in 2007 Professor Sheryl van Nunen discovered they also caused mammalian meat allergy (MMA).

All mammals, with the exception of humans, the great apes and old-world monkeys, have some sugar in their bloodstream called alpha galactose. When a tick bites a mammal and ingests some of its blood it attaches the alpha galactose to some of the proteins in its saliva. When it then bites a human, it injects some of this saliva. Humans initially recognise the protein as foreign, but after some number of bites may also recognise the galactose as foreign. This is when the person becomes allergic to red meat and in some cases milk and gelatine.

MMA occurs around the world but is 10 times more common in eastern Australia and can cause life-threating allergic reactions, and so the best way to protect yourself is to avoid being bitten by a tick. Use an insect repellent containing DEET, and wear light-coloured trousers, shirts with long sleeves and hats, and if you do get one freeze them off.

Prevention is key. An observable trend is noticeable. More Australians choose regular counselling sessions with mental health professionals before feeling emotionally unwell to ensure long-term health benefits. Looking after your mental health wellbeing regularly is key towards longterm mental health stability.

When it comes to training, many people often fall short of their goals. However, it’s not always to do with how often you train. Often it is due to the lack of intensity applied to that training.

By intensity I mean the amount of energy invested into the training session.

It can also refer to the amount of load you lift.

To force muscles to develop, the stimuli must be progressive over time to force them to grow. No overload equals no progression.

To see improvement, you should have a structured training plan that is allowing you to make small improvements and progress weekly.

Progression weekly, over a year, will ensure you see a drastic improvement in your results.

However, you must be patient. You need to remain dedicated, consistent, and disciplined to achieving the goal.

Results are rarely linear, and life will always happen, so it’s important you keep striving towards your goal even on the days you do not want to.

BREASTSCREEN QUEENSLAND CELEBRATES QUEENSLAND WOMEN’S WEEK

Queensland Women’s Week 2021 is a chance to celebrate the achievements of women in managing a year impacted by COVID-19.

For BreastScreen Queensland, it is also a time to encourage women who may have put off having regular health checks during the pandemic to return to regular breast cancer screening.

Women between 50 and 74 years of age are strongly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years, but currently less than 55 per cent of women in this age group, living in our region (the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Caboolture areas) have a regular breast screen.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, affecting

one in seven Queensland women by the age of 85.

Regular breast cancer screening is the best way to detect breast cancer early, increasing treatment options and saving lives.

WISDOM TEETH CARE As our dental care and nutrition have improved, there is less and less room for wisdom teeth. The average adult has 32 teeth by age 18 – 16 teeth on the top and 16 teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function, however, there is rarely room to accommodate wisdom teeth (third molars). When wisdom teeth attempt to erupt through the gum tissue it can result in immense pain and discomfort.

UP, UP AND AWAY FOR RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION COSTS A demand for materials and trades is pushing up the price of new builds and renovations, and adding to delays. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

ouse prices are up and so are the costs of residential construction and renovation, driven by a range of factors which aren’t likely to give the hip pocket relief for some time to come.

Government building incentives and low-interest loans have had a huge impact, but so too have other COVIDrelated issues.

“There is no doubt we are seeing significant upward pricing pressures, particularly since November 2020,” Metricon Queensland general manager Luke Fryer says about southeast Queensland.

“A fixed-price contract is an absolute key as inflationary and cost increases through both supply chain and trade are significantly more than they have been in previous years.”

He believes that the building industry costs are now at double the normal inflation rate.

due to material importing delays or because of production slowdowns as a result of enforced factory shutdown periods.

Master Builders regional manager Nicola Scott says timber frame costs have gone up 10 to 18 per and there have been three price increases in plumbing hardware in the last three months.

“There is a shortage of timber whiteboard for cabinet carcasses, delays in window supply requiring additional

Ms Scott also reports that trade shortages are being reported, particularly carpenters and tilers.

“It’s purely as a result of demand outstripping supply in addition to the

complications that many manufacturers have had due to COVID,” Mr Fryer says.

Luckily, many of the major manufacturers have been proactive in securing their supply chain. Since November, Metricon has been purchasing key items as soon as a customer’s fixed-price contract is signed.

Ms Scott recommends before a person enters a construction or renovation contract for works over $3300, they get more than one quote, seek legal advice and contact QBCC to check the service provider has a current licence. And be prepared to compromise on fittings choices.

There are few signs the industry is going to slow down in the near future.

“The once-feared waterfall of the end of HomeBuilder is now no fear at all,” Mr Fryer says. By December, 60 per cent of his new home sales were to HomeBuilder grant holders. Post-Christmas, that number has dropped to 30 per cent with more Queenslanders, who have sold their home to “domestic migrators”, sometimes for a tidy profit, now looking to build.

QUEENSLAND 2021 CLIMBING SEASON ANNOUNCED The Tokyo 2021 Olympics marks the first year that sport climbing will be included in an Olympic Games, and it’s increased popularity in Queensland reflects this.

With hundreds of local climbers keen to compete, Sport Climbing Queensland (SCQ) has announced its 2021 competition season.

“We have four exciting state competitions coming up, starting from May and ending in October with venues confirmed across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and Gold Coast,” SCQ president Paige Erpf says. “Climbers missed out on all competitions in 2020 due to COVID-19, and I know everyone is excited to get

back on the walls and compete in 2021.”

The first competition of the year will be the Queensland Open & Masters Bouldering Championship, being held in the Sunshine Coast’s newest climbing gym Flow Climbing Australia in May. For bouldering, athletes climb a 4.5-metre wall without the safety ropes used in lead climbing. Climbs range in difficulty and athletes may have multiple attempts to complete the problems using an extraordinary range of physical and mental dexterity.

The 2021 Queensland competitions will be drawing from a pool of fierce competitors.

MAROOCHY ROOS HOPEFUL FOR VICTORIAN HELP AFL on the Sunshine Coast has taken many years to build and thanks to the dedication of those who love the great Australian game, it is now a favourite sport for many locals.

The Maroochydore Australian Football Club, now in its 51st year, has become synonymous with quality football and quality facilities. Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council, the club is fortunate to call the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex home, boasting four ovals and two sets of change rooms along with meeting rooms, canteen and bar facilities.

The Maroochydore Senior club, which runs separately from the Junior club, has six teams with both women’s and men’s teams competing at the highest level in Queensland. The division three men’s side has competed in the last six grand finals, winning three.

With the groundswell of support for women’s AFL, the QAFLW side is bursting at the seams with talent both young and experienced and the men’s QAFL side has attracted more than a dozen quality players hailing from Victoria.

McAULIFFE CONFIDENT IN NEW MID-COURT

A

condensed training group is keeping athletes accountable on court and in the gym during pre-season, and Sunshine Coast Lightning’s Maddy McAuliffe believes the team will only benefit.

With internationals Karla Pretorius and Phumza Maweni in South Africa until next month and Cara Koenen undertaking Origin Diamond duties, Lightning is down to seven senior athletes plus training partners. All eyes are on the core group who remain at Lightning headquarters and Ms McAuliffe says it has become a motivating factor at each training session.

“I honestly think as a group we’ve been performing really well; we’ve been putting in a lot of hours in the gym and on the track,” she says.

“I think having that tight group means that everyone has to step up; there’s no hiding at the moment.”

Next Thursday, Lightning will take to the court in their first competitive hit-out for 2021, providing the opportunity to gauge how new combinations are forming.

The midcourt will be an area of focus,

given Ms McAuliffe, Laura Scherian and new additions Mahalia Cassidy and Ashlee Unie will all be available for court time.

The absence of former Captain Laura Langman has been widely spoken about externally, but Ms McAuliffe is confident the new-look midcourt will be up to the task. “Obviously there is some change this year with Lauz leaving the team, but Shez and I have been together in 2017 with Lauz in the team and then 2018 without,” McAuliffe says.

“We are used to that different midcourt and how that moves around. I think Mahalia has come into the team really, really well and we are lucky to have Ash Unie stepping up from training partner.

Ms Scherian also has confidence in the alternate line-up and says the injection of fresh talent will provide a competitive advantage. “I think we are all quite dynamic through the midcourt. I am hoping to be a bit more versatile,” she says.

“It’s been great to have some new ideas from the girls and we are really enjoying the opportunity to work with some new players.”
