From the editor This week on our Letters page, Sidney Brown of Pelican Waters writes in support of a Sunshine coast floral emblem. At the same time, he takes the opportunity to share a little bit of information on our local floral history. Mr Brown takes us back to 1973 and tells us that was the year a real estate agent by the name of Norm Butler suggested a Christmas bell community festival. Unfortunately, the community response wasn’t enough to get it off the ground and now, those spaces where the Christmas bells once grew wild, have long been replaced with housing. The Christmas bells in the area may be gone, but they are not forgotten, and they are now receiving a number of winning votes.

Christmas bells are not the only floral emblem suggested by readers, though I do think their red and yellow colours definitely

give them an edge – after all, they form a harmonious blend with surf, sand and lifesaver flags and uniforms. I look forward to hearing more of your views and once we are settled, perhaps a festival for our floral emblem would be in order.

This week, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw profiles the local photographer who captures these great surfing moments and how she came to snap an extraordinary moment in the life a whale shark in our aquatic backyard.

Is it time to pay parents?

A letter to Joe Biden has stimulated yet another discussion about whether or not stay-at-home parents should be paid, and the role governments play in providing financial support to parents.

I

n these times of global media, this month a full-page advertisement in The New York Times asking for wage payments for stay-at-home mothers sparked similar questions for the Australian public. The idea, always controversial, remains fraught with opposing opinions. Nevertheless, whether in passing conversation or vigorous debate, there are myriad opinions, questions and commentary that demand to be heard.

One Sunshine Coast mother who decided to stay at home with her newborn child and two-year-old answered the question with another question: “Why do childcare centres get paid subsidies to look after children and I don’t.”

She says she is pleased about childcare centre subsidies that support women entering the outside workforce.

But she wonders why there isn’t a corresponding subsidy for stay-at-home parents.

“That would promote equal choice,” she says.

Her view is among the many that arise from this controversial subject.

To some, the idea there is enough money in government coffers to make such a payment is just plain ridiculous.

Philosophically, many primary caregivers believe they should be remunerated with a dollar value. Contrary to that, others believe that at-home parenting offers an intrinsic reward of raising a healthy, happy family.

In America, as President Joe Biden settles into his first weeks of office, a group of 50 high-profile women have taken the opportunity to put the question of a parenting wage for mothers on the national agenda.

As the new president rolls out a list of far-reaching social reforms aimed at uplifting an economy reeling from the effects of COVID, these women want their demands included. They are advocating for another payment, specifically to mothers, to stimulate the economy.

This month, the women’s group paid for a full-page ad in The New York Times.

In the form of a letter, they wrote: “Dear President Biden, you know well moms are the bedrock of society and we are tired of working free…”

“COVID has decimated so many of our careers. Two million of us have left the workforce, at a rate of four times that of men in September alone. Millions more have been forced to cut back our hours or work around the clock to keep our jobs and be full-time caregivers.

“Mothers of school-age children, in

Helping them catch up, the campaign argues, would benefit all.

Following the advertisement, The New York Times reported on February 16 that the “ White House will soon have a Gender

Policy Council that will help keep women’s issues at the centre of almost everything the Biden administration does”.

“It’s a plan to take a government-wide approach to gender equity and equality,” said a panel co-chair.

Contrary to Australians, Americans parents receive little to zero financial benefits. In Australia, while there is no basic wage payment for stay-at-home parents, there are means-tested payments for parents and some subsidies available for childcare.

In an August 2020 report, Grattan Institute* published an article titled ‘Cheaper childcare: A practical plan to boost female workforce participation’.

The article proposed childcare be made cheaper to enable more women to do more paid work, and to help lift the economy out of the COVID recession.

“The federal government should spend an extra $5 billion a year on childcare subsidies. The payoff would be an $11 billion-a-year increase in GDP from the boost to workforce participation – and $150,000 in higher lifetime earnings for the typical Australian mother.” myweeklypreview.com.au

Additionally, it stated: “The federal government should extend the parental leave scheme to offer six weeks ‘use it or lose it’ leave at minimum wage for each parent, plus 12 weeks they can share between them. This would cost an extra $600 million a year but would help fathers to spend more time with their children in the critical first year of the child’s life.”

Cheaper childcare, the authors say, “would be a win-win – it would boost the economy and give Australian women enhanced life choices”.

Ultimately, women in outside work would boost the economy. But is outside work for women the only way to boost the economy? Is there an underlying implication that stay-at-home parents are a drain on the economy? Is there another way to gauge the value of parenthood other than having economists measure it against a dollar value?

Jamie Mathews, a business owner and mother of two teenagers, notes that the current system creates a crazy circular economy.

“Childcare businesses are subsidised, a mother’s childcare is not. Additionally in the case of a woman, who may work part-time and earn less wages, I bet she earns a take-home wage that is less than the childcare subsidies given to the big business owners who own the centres.

“At the end of the day, the money all goes back into the system. It just depends on who is feeding it back into the system – parents, business, government.

“It would be good to see subsidies that are equal in choice for women who wish to work outside the home and those who wish to work within the home.” * The Grattan Institute is dedicated to developing high-quality public policy for Australia’s future. It was formed in 2008 in response to a widespread view in government and business that Australia needed a non-partisan think tank providing independent, rigorous and practical solutions to some of the country’s most pressing problems.

FINANCIAL HELP Australian benefits to parents include the federal Parenting Payment for the primary parent or guardian of children under eight if the parent is single and under six if they’re a couple. The payment is means tested and set at a maximum of $660.80 per fortnight for a parent/guardian in a couple, including the temporary $150 coronavirus supplement. There’s also the means-tested Family Tax Benefit available at a maximum rate of $189.56 per fortnight for a child and $246.54 for a teenager.

WORKPLACE PARTICIPATION From 1991 to 2016, the number of mothers in paid employment increased.

However, despite changing attitudes to parental roles, parents’ employment remains very gendered, with fathers far more likely to be working full-time than mothers. The percentage of stay-at-home dads (three to four per cent) has barely changed since 1991.

MAKING CHOICES – A MOTHER’S THOUGHTS “With my first son, I returned to work on a casual basis when he was nine months old and steadily built up my work capacity. This time, I began part-time work when my baby hit the five-month-old mark for varied reasons – one being in this COVID economic climate, I’m very aware of the importance of retaining a solid job.

“Scientific research shows that early parental bonding and physical touch with a baby is critical to long-term development and mental health. While the current five-month paid parental leave scheme is generous, I would like to see it extended to 12 months.

With today’s cost of living, the stay-at-home parent is forced back to work early and in turn misses much of that vital bonding time.

Returning to work early could put a subsequent strain on the nation’s mental health system.”

Regarding extension of payment or offering stay-at-home parents an allowance.

“This is such a complex issue as there are many factors to consider prior to a government implementing such a payment. I believe, for it to be feasible, there would have to be a cap up to a certain age to ensure it is balanced for those at home and for those earners whose tax would subsequently be funding the initiative.

“To work, it would need to be based on a

similar structure to paid parental leave in that applicants must have been working a set number of hours, studying or training prior.

To say that a similar payment to the childcare subsidy is an option is questionable as this in turn would impact heavily on that industry, so you end up with an additional issue in that people’s employment could be in jeopardy. The subsidy is also means tested so in order to be fair, a standard stay at home payment should be paid across the board.

“Currently there is no funding easily available for parents who have to stop working to accommodate for caring and supporting children with ASD or similar health concerns. I know too many women who have walked away from job security and careers because they can’t do both and are subsequently impacted financially. Where do you stop when it comes to funding schemes for stay-at-home parents?

“As a mother I would love to be able to be at home with my babies and be paid. But realistically, I don’t see the government implementing this because it doesn’t stimulate the economy in the same capacity as a working role. They want people in work. The working landscape needs to change so the primary care giver can experience a balance.”

Applications for the 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants Program are now open. Primary schools and early learning centres across the Sunshine Coast can also apply for a Bee Bonus, as part of a $1.5-million investment by Woolworths into the program. Up to a thousand Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants are being offered, for up to $1000 each. Recipients can use the grant to grow a vegetable or bush tucker garden, composting, worm farm or other environmental projects in their schools and communities, helping to educate the younger generation about the importance of the environment.

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA INCREASES COAST FLIGHTS

Australia’s biggest TikTok and Instagram stars are working together to inspire Australia’s youth to rock the chop and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer by participating in Cancer Council Queensland’s fundraising campaign, the Ponytail Project. Cancer Council Queensland has teamed up with Born Bred Talent to inspire the next generation of fundraisers through a Ponytail Project social campaign. From humble beginnings as a school fundraiser in 2015 held by students at St Margaret’s school, the campaign was quickly adopted by students across Queensland, and now the movement is chopping ponytails nationwide. Sunshine Coast Airport has welcomed the news that Virgin Australia will increase capacity for the Sunshine Coast, including a regular Adelaide service between March 29 and April 25. This service will deliver up to 5500 seats over the April period.

Direct services will also expand to Cairns, Hamilton Island, Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine). The services will add more than 13,000 seats across 37 return flights. Sydney to Sunshine Coast will have up to 14 return services a week by April 4 and Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast will have up to 18 return services a week by April 4.

Sunshine Coast Council’s innovative pilot project diverting stormwater to street trees in Golden Beach and Currimundi has been commended at a recent statewide awards night. Stormwater Queensland Excellence Awards on Thursday February 4 presented Sunshine Coast Council with a Commendation for Excellence in Research and Innovation. Golden Beach is the first suburb on the Sunshine Coast to trial the functional, cost-effective and sustainable watering solution.

The council is monitoring and learning from the trial to improve and adapt the project to suit other locations. Stormwater Queensland Awards showcase master planning and integrated stormwater design and the benefits to Queensland’s waterway health.

A crowd of eligible singles packed out the inaugural Krushology dating event last week held at Land & Sea Brewery, Noosaville. The Peregian-based organisers are calling the event a “massive success” after watching a group of 35-to-55-year-old singles making new connections and for many, exchanging contact details and becoming friends online. The event created so much buzz, tickets quickly sold out and there was a waiting list of both men and women. The organisers are promising more events for younger and older age groups.

Sunshine Coast business owner, author and speaker, Zoë Sparks, is set to launch her fifth business book, sharing stories and business tips from 56 women, 38 of them from the Sunshine Coast.

NEW SKATE PARK FOR DICKY BEACH Construction on a new skate park and beach amenities at Dicky Beach will begin in March.

O

ur skate culture has come a long way. Gone are the days in the 1970s when we were dropping into abandoned swimming pools. Fast forward to this September and Sunshine Coast locals should be hugging the rail on a precisionbuilt skate park in the heart of Caloundra.

Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders will soon see their skate park design become reality with Sunshine Coast Council beginning construction on a new Dicky Beach concrete playscape in early March.

As part of the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan, stage one works will reflect the SS Dicky wreck’s significance to the local area and include open spaces and much-needed community facilities to create a welcoming experience for the locals and visitors coming to the area.

Divisional councillor Terry Landsberg says many people in the community provided valuable feedback in 2019 to help shape the Dicky Beach Precinct Plan and new skate park.

“It’s great to reach the construction phase of this project and see that valuable local input become a reality for

“During the construction period, the existing 20-year-old skate park will be closed while it is demolished to make way for the new one, which is expected to be finished in early September, dependent on weather and site conditions.

Sea the light Mount Coolum photographer Tracy Naughton is flying high after her recent photos of a whale shark in Noosa gained recognition around the world. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

ts spots were clearly visible in the crystalline Noosa waters, a rare sight for this part of the world. Long-time locals said they’d never seen one at Noosa. On January 27, a whale shark was seen swimming around surfers at Noosa and My Weekly Preview contributor Tracy Naughton captured stunning aerial photos and video that were sent around the world.

A surf photographer with an Instagram following of more than 25,000, she often heads down to the beach after dropping her daughter off at school. The Mount Coolum photographer happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right equipment to capture the images, which gained worldwide media attention.

“I turned up to the point in Noosa National Park – surfers calls it Nationals – and headed down to the beach with my

gear and my drone. I managed to get a good half an hour’s worth of photos and footage of the whale shark. I was kind of worried as I didn’t want to get too close.

I kept my drone 30 metres above it – I didn’t want to stress it out.

“I didn’t really know what I had until later that day. I put it on the Noosa community Facebook page and it blew up.

I started getting enquiries from media. I knew it was worth something because it was the only professional drone up at the time.”

Channel Seven, Channel Nine, The Daily Mail and Australia Zoo’s company Eureka Productions, which supplies content to Animal Planet, rushed to obtain Mrs Naughton’s photos and video footage.

“It was totally rare and I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time,”

Mrs Naughton says. “I prepare for that by taking my gear with me wherever I go.

It was pretty special I think.”

When the whale shark became stuck on rocks, a group of surfers and beachgoers jumped into the water to free it.

Sadly, it was found washed up at Double Island Point two weeks later, with marine scientists speculating it may have been sick.

“Someone who was at Double Island Point messaged me on Instagram,” Mrs Naughton says. “They sent me the photo of it at DI and I was so sad. It’s nature, but it’s just not the outcome you hope for. I was so happy it had been freed at Noosa. I thought it was going to go and live a happy life in the deep waters, but obviously it had ended up there for a reason. I didn’t want to be the one to share the news, so I asked the girl who messaged me to share it.”

As saddened as she was to learn the fate of the whale shark, Mrs Naughton is heartened that she may have been the last person to photograph it alive, a beautiful memory of a spectacular creature.

It’s a career highlight she can add to a growing list.

While she loved photography as a child, it was art Mrs Naughton first chose to pursue. Once she discovered the power of the camera, she was hooked. She uses a Canon 5D in an AquaTech housing in combination with a drone to capture the luminous beauty of our coastline.

“When I first started, I just photographed coastal culture,” she says.

“I would do landscapes and sunrises. Then I wanted to start incorporating people, and the natural thing on the Sunshine Coast is to photograph surfers. They just make such a beautiful aesthetic.”

Mrs Naughton found her niche when she began to focus on female surfers.

“I like using feminine colours and I focus on the female form because I think it’s pretty beautiful,” she says. “Not that there’s anything wrong with the male form.

I’m always looking at beautiful light and I like my photos to have a light airiness.”

When Mrs Naughton began photographing the Noosa Festival of Surfing in 2015, her work began to be noticed by magazines and brands. In 2018 she launched the She to Sea art show as part of the festival. It is a way to further celebrate women and surfing through a variety of artistic mediums.

With a strong signature style, she’s now working for the likes of the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort, Freedom Furniture, Billabong and Roxy.

“Last year I supplied 64 framed fine art prints to the Novotel,” she says. “ When the pandemic first hit, I thought people weren’t going to want to buy artwork, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.”

Mrs Naughton’s prints are now in demand around the world and she is on a never-ending learning curve in a quest to perfect her art.

“I still have so much to learn with photography. I’d like to be able to paint full time, but it’s so much harder to be a full-time artist as opposed to earning a living as a photographer. There is so much possibility with where you can go with it.”

FOR SUPER’S SAKE For those of you over the age of 65, you may be asking: is there a way to top up my super savings so that I retain the flexibility to afford an enjoyable retirement? In short, yes. The government allows those over the age of 65 to relocate for the purpose of making a contribution to super.

Where you satisfy the rules it may be possible to contribute up to $300,000 per person from the proceeds of the sale of your residence. The contribution won’t count towards your concessional or non-concessional contribution caps, you’re not required to satisfy the work test and there is no maximum age limit to make the contribution. There are a number of key requirements that need to be satisfied: • You haven’t already made use of the downsizer contribution rule.

• You must be 65 or over at the time you make the contribution.

• The contract of sale needs to be entered into after July 1, 2018.

• You are required to make the contribution within 90 days of the change of ownership.

• You are required to complete documents to confirm it is a downsizer contribution.

• You are unable to claim any part of the contribution as a tax deduction.

• In part or whole you must satisfy the main residence capital gains tax exemption.

• The property must have been owned by yourself and/or your spouse for more than 10 years prior to the sale.

Other conditions may apply. You need to seek advice before doing anything.

To be clear, there are other factors that need to be considered before undertaking such a strategy.

Christmas Bells were once very common along the coast from Caloundra in the south to Noosa and the Cooloola Coast in the north. In the past they were so abundant they were harvested and sent to markets in Brisbane. Their sunny vermilion and yellow colours are in keeping with our sunny Sunshine Coast.

This is barmy. A former mayor stated that he witnessed waves (cyclone) washing onto the western side of Nicklin Way. We are now, thanks to development between Mooloolah River and Currimundi Lake, almost surrounded by water. Locals couldn’t escape this area in an emergency. Nature will eventually repeat itself. How can any government or council justify increasing density in this area? To be rated as the second best area in Queensland is something to be proud of, not to destroy. As someone suggested, build high-rise in new, safer areas.

For authorities that push climate change and oceans rising, there is no justification for these plans.

BEACH FLOWERS Regarding a floral emblem – how about the pink Pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens), which is hardy and grows well over the dunes (and after all, we are about the beach).

In the UK, the government has been petitioned this week for children born of rape to be given lifelong legal ‘victim’ status so that they can receive specialist help and a clear avenue to prosecute their fathers should they want either.

While the circumstance of such a start to life is horrifying, being eternally labelled a victim – defined by the terrible act that brought about their conception — surely would do little to help those people build confident, whole lives.

Words do matter. New US President Joe Biden’s move this week to eliminate the official word for non-citizens in the

WORDS MATTER Researcher Stephanie Fohring in the journal International Review of Victimology explored how victims of crime feel about the word ‘victim’. She found they saw victimhood as a transient state and that it was important to focus on effective coping versus suffering.

This is not to demean the awful experiences people go through. The unexpected, unwanted curve balls in life can knock the hardiest of humans utterly off their feet.

And yes, in the vortex of trauma or

moment of an incident, they are a victim.

Former Liberal Party employee Brittany Higgins called herself a victim when she told a TV current affair show about an alleged rape by a colleague in a ministerial suite office late one night while drunk after a function more than two years ago. Late in the week, she issued a statement decrying what she called the Prime Minister’s ‘victimblaming’ rhetoric.

The PM apologised to Higgins for her treatment in the aftermath of the alleged incident, conceding the government mishandled the response, and pledged an independent workplace review.

The Australian of the Year Grace Tame is lauded as giving sex abuse victims a voice. But shouldn’t those who lived through abuse be viewed as survivors? They were innocents, yes. And they were subject to something terrible and unwanted. But if they are still

And because the English language is ever changing, it is imperative we move forward with the words we use as we gain understanding and our communities morph. If we don’t, like the connotation of the word ‘victim’, we become paralysed and framed by what went before.

A seven-week surf program, blending traditional and contemporary Sunshine Coast culture, is helping children develop lifelong skills. Dingira Warrai, meaning ‘sea dance’ in Kabi Kabi language, is running until April 1 at Noosa.

Thirty youngsters are participating in the program, which is offered by Youturn Youth Support, and imparts valuable knowledge on sustainability, community and health through feel-good surf dance lessons.

Children and their families gather early at Noosa river mouth to learn from Kabi Kabi custodian Lyndon Davis for land sessions, and Surf Dancer Academy coaches for surf dance and ocean skills.

Head coach Kristy Quirk has a deep respect for First Nations culture and is delighted to be working alongside Lyndon Davis and Gubbi Gubbi Dance.

“Surf Dancer loves to collaborate with indigenous dancers as a holistic way to showcase surf dancing, encouraging learning, connection and expression. There is something very special about bringing dance to the ocean,” she says.

Youturn engagement manager Susan Beaton says Dingira Warrai was born following an invitation to Youturn by Tewantin Dental Centre, part of Bupa’s Dental Network, to apply for a grant for children to learn to connect to nature, be in the moment, block out noise to stay strong and share struggles and triumphs with family and peers.

It is envisaged that these protective behaviours, the enjoyment of surfing, understanding the ocean and connection to country, will build confidence and equip children as they transition to teenagers and into adults.

When it comes to redeeming gift vouchers, Ashley Robinson runs into a series of situations worthy of a Seinfeld episode.

After watching many a 4WD get stuck in the surf on the way home from Double Island Point, Sami Muirhead instigates Trent’s Law.

I

know you are not like me, and don’t think like me – that probably makes you normal doesn’t it? I definitely watch too many Seinfeld reruns. I have watched them all more times than I can count and more times than old mate can believe. It’s about people watching and they cover most things, but I reckon they missed a topic. The dreaded gift voucher.

What is it with vouchers at restaurants?

You know, someone kindly gives you a voucher for a fine dining gig, not realising the challenges it throws up. Firstly, it nearly always costs more than the value of the voucher. Secondly, the dreaded expiry date sneaks up on you like a ship in the night and thirdly, the attitude of staff when you produce a voucher out of your pocket rather than cold hard cash.

It is the last two that really give me the sh***. Sadly, if you are unlucky enough to let the thing expire, the rigmarole you have to go through to extend it, and the whole attitude thing with the voucher when you pull it out of your pocket. Now I am generalising here. Some places are great, but others treat you like you are asking them to give you one of their kids when you

ask for an extension, while the whole voucher handing-over suddenly changes you from a valued client to some desperate person who found the voucher in the bin.

I used one the other day and it still cost me nearly $200 over the value of the voucher, but the look on the young lady’s

I would like to remind all those operators who look down on vouchers that someone paid for it. It is cash but it is not my fault if you have already spent it.

ur family has a new saying: “Make good decisions, Trent.”

Trent made a very bad choice. I do not know Trent, but he entertained, horrified and delighted our clan for hours last weekend as we sat in camping chairs at the Mudlo Rocks in front of the Rainbow Beach Surf Club.

It is an age-old sport that sums up our Aussie spirit and one I have participated in since I was a toddler. It is one of my first memories. You sit at happy hour and sip on a nice cold drink while watching the waves crash over the headland rocks as the larrikins roll home in their cars from Double Island Point to the haven of the main street of Rainbow Beach.

On a lucky day, someone will have a great speaker and play some AC/DC tunes such as Thunderstruck. The drivers run the gambit of beating the tide and dodging the rocks. The ultimate punishment is the catastrophic saltwater waiting to ruin their pride and joy. There is even a wall of shame in the local pub with photographic evidence of all the Trents that have come and gone.

should have waited an hour for the angry water to subside. Instead, he found himself stuck in his late model Mitsubishi Triton with all his mates, as waves crashed over his car and the jet ski he was towing. Turns out some things in life do frighten a Triton.

I was feeling sick with anxiety for poor Trent. Each crashing wave sparked a loud cheer of pain and excitement from the peanut gallery as we filmed the mishap on our shiny phones and had another sip as we took in the drama. Dozens of people raced to help try to shake the car free and it took about three cars to tow Trent and his mates out in the end. I have not heard such loud commentary on an issue since I gave a dummy to my baby.

Everyone had an opinion on Trent, from being a bloody legend to a bloody idiot. We have all been there. Poor kid. He put on a brave face, but I think he was embarrassed. We bought him a beer later that night as he nervously waited to hear if the car was covered by insurance.

But in the meantime, Trent’s Law is now legendary in our house when the kids are faced with making a good or bad decision.

Don’t be a Trent.

DANCER TURNS TO TEACHING AFTER CAREER STALLS DUE TO COVID

he start of Chloe Paix’s professional dancing career has been far from smooth sailing, but she is persevering, having found a new and rewarding role close to home.

Having danced since the age of three,

the 18-year-old had planned to perform on cruise ships after training full time at Conroy Performing Arts in Brisbane from 2019 to 2020.

Cruises are a popular entry into the industry for young dancers, but they have been put on hold due to COVID-19.

“But as the weeks turned into months, I started to question whether all the time was worth it if there was nothing to return to.

“It’s hard to keep wanting something that currently doesn’t exist.

“I have trained for this career since I was three, so for it to then collapse and watch it sink, after working for a job for 16 years, to say it’s hard is an understatement.”

However, the job crisis has a silver lining with Ms Paix teaming up with her mother Leanne to teach Jazzercise at Nambour and Cooroy.

Ms Paix says working for her mum has been her saviour during the career pause.

“My saving grace in all of this has been Jazzercise as it has kept me moving and surrounded me with the most amazing and inspiring women ever, but also my creative works.”

Leanne Paix says her daughter is one of many dancers currently forced to look for other work options.

“A lot of dancers are out of work and they are all going into do fitness because it is the next best thing for them,” she says.

“The dance world is populated with teachers, so it can be hard to find somewhere to work.”

As well as working for her mum in the mornings, Ms Paix has been lucky enough to secure a job teaching at Studio 2 Dance in Nambour in the afternoons and says she is looking forward to auditioning for dance roles again in the near future.

With plans for more of Maisie’s adventures in future, Ms Lysaught says drafts of the next two picture books are waiting completion. In the meantime, she is looking forward to returning to schools this year to read to children after a ban to visits in 2020.

“I’m looking forward to sharing my books with kids again and watching their faces as they are transported into the worlds of Maisie and Inspector Maisie.”

FRIENDSHIP FORCE STAYS CLOSE TO HOME Friendship Force Sunshine Coast is making plans for a very different 2021 compared with the activities usually enjoyed worldwide.

Part of a global organisation promoting national and international understanding and cultural exchanges through home stays, the club’s Robyn Stewart says this year the group is going local.

“Our club has focused on promoting friendships among our local members and concentrating our journeys within the local region,” she says. “Future activities this year include regular luncheons while

exploring the local region, Zoom trivia nights, a tag-along driving tour and weekend excursions.”

The club held its inaugural meeting for 2021 at the Mapleton Men’s Shed in January, with four new members welcomed into the club.

Division six (Buderim, Mountain Creek, Palmview, Sippy Downs) Brightwater Mosquito Control Program The mosquito control field survey work for Brightwater is now underway. Council is conducting weekly monitoring of mosquito breeding areas along the Brightwater Eastern Conservation Reserve and a specialist survey trap has been placed near the dog park. Ground treatments were recently completed on smaller targeted areas, with research being concurrently undertaken assessing the effectiveness of possible future broad scale aerial treatments targeting mosquito larvae to further reduce these seasonal impacts.

Council does not spray for adult flying mosquitoes around private property.

The control program targets mosquito breeding locations on public land and along waterways to vastly reduce overall numbers emerging from these locations.

Young Citizen of the Year Congratulations to division six local Angelique Hallett on being awarded Young Citizen of the Year. Angelique is the founder and director of social enterprise Loving Hope Bears, which provides a teddy bear to every child in domestic violence shelters on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie. A

new Asian food offering is proving popular in Mooloolaba since opening its doors in June last year.

Moon Bear Taiwanese brings an authentic take on the cuisine from a food-loving duo.

Taiwanese-born chef Shin Wei Huang, known here as Wayne, and his partner, Hong Kong-born Lai Nang Yim, known as Panda, met while living in a share house in Stanthorpe. Both worked in hospitality, and they eventually followed their dream to open their own restaurant.

Taiwanese cooking originates from Chinese cuisine but has its own distinct flavours, and Wayne says they spent a lot of time perfecting their dishes to ensure what they produced represented the best of Taiwanese cooking. He says most of the sauces they use are made on site to ensure freshness and an authentic flavour.

As one of only a handful of Taiwanese restaurants on the Sunshine Coast, Panda says opening their own restaurant has given the couple an opportunity to “do it right and do it properly”.

Moon Bear is open daily from 5pm at on River Esplanade, with karaoke night every Wednesday.

A

fter attempting to take his own life 17 years ago, Nathan Taylor is now hoping to help teenagers gain the tools they need to flourish as young adults.

Comunite’z is a social enterprise growing from tragedy and now gaining the

support of businesses and organisations in the Caloundra region.

“I tried to take my life in 2004 and I am very grateful I am here today and I’ve got a second chance at life because I love my life,” Mr Taylor says.

“I feel it is something I can really

connect with. I’m not somebody who doesn’t understand what someone else is going through, because I’ve been there.”

Mr Taylor was 25 at the time of his attempted suicide and was saved by his stepfather Allan Randle, but the initiative for change began when Mr Taylor and his wife Kattisha set up Zak’s Community on Facebook in 2018.

The page was in honour of Ms Taylor’s second cousin, Zak, who took his life in 2012 aged just 12.

“It was really, really traumatic and it’s just something you can never get over; it’s never forgotten,” Mr Taylor says.

Selling T-shirts to raise money for suicide prevention, the initiative eventually grew into Comunite’z, the ‘Z’ symbolic of Zak. “We’ve got to a point where we’ve been out spreading a lot of awareness,” Mr Taylor says. “I’ve been doing some speaking and lots of people are buying shirts and hats.”

Local businesses have come on board to help spread the message and provide resources to assist in suicide prevention for high school students.

“The old saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ – as a community, we are all in this together.

“Suicide prevention is bigger than any one individual; it is bigger than all of us.

“We’ve been blessed with having such an amazing community here on the Sunshine Coast that so many businesses have wanted to be a part of it.

SOUTHERN SUNSHINE COAST REGION

“We want to connect these kids with interests so they can uncover a passion and connect to community.”

As Comunite’z continues to grow, the plan is to hold workshops, programs, activities and social events where young people can connect with gyms, sporting clubs or similar organisations.

The goal is to help teenagers develop a sense of belonging and self-love through an ethos of care, conversation, connections, community, change.

“We want to give them the tools to discover their own self-love – everything that they need to go on and become flourishing young adults. We wanted to create leaders of the next generation who do have all the tools they need to overcome any challenges or any adversity but also be passionate advocates for suicide prevention themselves.”

“In a first for Caloundra, the Business Alliance has produced a range of reusable water bottles to be made from 100 per cent aluminium,” Ms Smith says.

“Each limited-edition series will have a sensational image of one of our beautiful beaches here in Caloundra.”

The photos have been provided by local Blueys Photography and all proceeds from the bottles will go back to the CBA for future community projects.

ember for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced the fourth and final round of winners from his 2020 Local Heroes Grants.

Each year, up to four grants of $250 each quarter are available for individuals or small community groups in the electorate.

“Except in last year’s final round, I went a little overboard and handed out $1500 in grants … that’s six recipients,” Mr Powell says.

“Of course, I will be running the Local

Heroes Grants program again this year, and hopefully I’m able to, on occasion, give away more than four grants each round again.”

Fourth round winners for 2020 include: • Bellthorpe Rural Fire Brigade – for the purchase of a shade cover and camp chairs for crew members when on deployment.

• Peachester Branch QCWA – used the money to fund a Christmas market at the Peachester Hall.

• Maleny Chamber of Commerce – to

assist in the organisational costs of the Maleny Christmas Concert.

• Glasshouse Mountains Riding School – spent its $250 on keeping the many horses and other animals fed.

• Maleny State School Chaplaincy – to fund its new program, Shine, for Year six girls to help encourage self-worth and purpose.

• D’Aguilar Range District Scouts – helping with the cost of training to gain qualifications in horse trail riding so that instructors can teach this adventurous activity to youth members.

Four lanes are now open along Parklands Boulevard in Little Mountain. Early feedback has confirmed the duplication project is improving traffic flow through the area at peak times. While there are still some landscaping and finishing touches to be completed, overall this is a great outcome for our community. Thank you to residents for their patience over the past 18 months while work was underway.

Currimundi Lake playground upgrade Work is underway to upgrade Currimundi’s Cliff Hargreaves Park. This will include installing a new multi-play unit, Playmatta wear pads and cleaning the sand softfall. A new shade tree will also be planted in the park. This upgrade should be completed in the coming weeks, weather dependant.

Zonta Club of Caloundra City has made the difficult decision to cancel an International Women’s Day event planned for March 6 to fundraise and pack birthing kits for expectant mothers in third-world counties.

Club president Pam Hall says with the continued uncertainty around the pandemic, the club will instead hold two smaller events.

“We were unable to proceed with our planned community event due to the risk of financial loss if we had to cancel suddenly as a result of an emergency lockdown. “We will be holding two smaller birthing kit assembly activities on March 6 and also intend to do similar activities as the year progresses.”

WILL AI BE THE HEMINGWAY OF THE FUTURE? Lucinda McKnight, senior lecturer in pedagogy and curriculum, Deakin University explains how robots could become better writers than humans.

S

tudents across Australia have started the new school year using pencils, pens and keyboards to learn to write. In workplaces, machines are also learning to write, so effectively that within a few years they may write better than humans. Sometimes they already do, as apps like Grammarly demonstrate. Certainly, much everyday writing humans now do may soon be done by machines with artificial intelligence (AI).

The predictive text commonly used by phone and email software is a form of AI writing that countless humans use every day. According to an industry research organisation Gartner, AI and related technology will automate production of 30 per cent of all content found on the internet by 2022.

Some prose, poetry, reports, newsletters, opinion articles, reviews, slogans and scripts are already being written by artificial intelligence.

Literacy increasingly means and includes interacting with and critically evaluating AI. This means our children should no longer be taught just formulaic writing. Instead, writing education should encompass skills that go beyond the capacities of artificial intelligence.

Back to basics, or further away from them?

After 2019 PISA results (Programme for International Student Assessment) showed Australian students sliding backwards in numeracy and literacy, then Education Minister Dan Tehan called for schools to go back to basics.

But computers already have the basics mastered.

Three major reports — from the NSW Teachers’ Federation,the NSW Education Standards Authority and the

NSW, QLD, Victorian and ACT governments — have criticised school writing for having become formulaic, to serve NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy).

In some schools, students write essays with sentences fulfilling specified functions, in specified orders, in specified numbers and arrangements of paragraphs. These can then be marked by computers to demonstrate progress. This template writing is exactly the kind of standardised practice robot writers can do.

Are you scared yet, human?

In 2019, the New Yorker magazine did an experiment to see if IT company OpenAI’s natural language generator GPT-2 could write an entire article in the magazine’s distinctive

style. This attempt had limited success, with the generator making many errors.

But by 2020, GPT-3, the new version of the machine, trained on even more data, wrote an article for The Guardian newspaper with the headline: “A robot wrote this entire article. Are you scared yet, human?”

This latest much-improved generator has implications for the future of journalism.

Robots have voice but no soul AI writing is said to have voice but no soul. Human writers, as the New Yorker’s John Seabrook says, give “colour, personality and emotion to writing by bending the rules”.

Students, therefore, need to learn the rules and be encouraged to break them. Creativity and co-creativity (with machines) should be fostered.

Machines are trained on a finite amount of data, to predict and replicate, not to innovate in meaningful and deliberate ways.

Purposeful writing AI cannot yet plan and does not have a purpose. Students need to hone skills in purposeful writing that achieves their communication goals. Unfortunately, the NAPLAN regime has hampered teaching writing as a process that involves planning and editing. This is because it favours time-limited exam-style writing for no audience. There are calls for humans to become expert in sophisticated forms of writing and in editing writing created by robots as vital future skills.

When Liam Brix took on the role of full-time carer for his terminally ill parents, he was witness to the care and assistance provided by the many people who supported them. It was then that he knew a career helping people was what he wanted to do.

Mr Brix has worked as an activities coordinator at Suncare’s Boronia Cottage on Bribie Island for more than two years and prior to that he was a Suncare support worker.

FOUNDATION STAFF MEMBER RETURNS HOME TO GRAMMAR

From humble beginnings in 1997, Jennifer Worthington was one of the very first teachers employed to help lay the education foundations and build the culture, of what was then a dream to build one of the leading independent schools on the Sunshine Coast.

Fast forward two decades and Ms Worthington feels privileged to be able to continue the dream and return to Sunshine Coast Grammar School in 2021 as a teacher in the primary school.

This year, the school will officially

celebrate 25 years since the sod was first turned on the 100-acre Forest Glen site and Ms Worthington is proud to return to what she describes as an outstanding school of choice and be a part of a culture where everyone has a sense of belonging.

“It is wonderful to see that the school has continued to go from strength to strength and expanded in enrolments, staff and physical structures. Our learning community is blessed with a wellresourced learning environment in such a beautiful natural rainforest setting,” says Ms Worthington.

“Yet walking back into Grammar I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic looking at the turfed play areas and the beautiful gardenia gardens at the front of the school, which foundation staff helped create. Returning to Grammar is like coming home; the culture of Grammar has not changed. You get a real sense of belonging and being part of the Grammar family. I feel very special being welcomed by familiar staff faces from previous years and new staff who now call Grammar home.”

As a foundation Art teacher, Ms Worthington has many fond memories of developing the visual arts program and being part of the visual arts learning journey.

“Our students’ artwork was proudly

shared in promotional art exhibitions in the local community and a number of our students took out awards in the QATAS Awards in Excellence in Art Design. I think our participation in the annual Sea Week Festival and our celebration of caring for the marine environment was a notable part of the art program,” says Ms Worthington.

Ms Worthington and her husband Graham, who taught Indonesian at the school, left Sunshine Coast Grammar in 2002 to take up two-year teaching contract in Singapore. During their time overseas, they joined the international teaching circuit, which Ms Worthington describes as a truly rewarding experience both personally and professionally.

“I was fortunate to teach in a number of international schools in South East Asia and Europe. Some being extremely large and recognised as top international schools such as Tanglin Trust School in Singapore and the International School of Geneva in Switzerland,” she says.

While on the international circuit Ms Worthington taught mainly in Early Years, but also held leadership positions as head of curriculum, year lead teacher and as a foundation principal of a new international primary school.

REWARD YOURSELF WITH AN UPDATED HOME LOAN Now is the time to review your current home loan rate, according to a report by the ACCC. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

T

he ACCC makes a compelling argument for borrowers not to sit on their hands and weather their current home loan rate, nor to wait until they are prompted to review their loan.

With over 100 home loan lenders offering a combined total of close to 4000 different products to choose from, it may seem to borrowers a daunting task to deal with either switching lenders or pushing a current lender to provide a better deal. But the numbers put forward in the ACCC’s Home Loan Price Enquiry Report, published in December 2020, should provide the fuel for borrowers to act now.

By December 2019, the ACCC found almost half of all variable rate home loans were already four years old. That was probably not such a bad situation in the past, but right now as we live in a world of ultra-low interest rates, there is a significant and widening gap between those ageing loans and what borrowers are paying now.

Old loans are costing borrowers significantly more than what new borrowers are paying.

If that doesn’t make you sit up and start thinking about your home loan cost, perhaps these examples from the ACCC will.

A borrower with a loan of between three and five years old is on average paying about 0.58 per cent interest above new loans; for a loan of five to 10 years old it’s about 0.71 per cent; and for a

loan greater than 10 years old it’s about 1.04 per cent above the current rates.

“Many of those borrowers with older home loans could achieve significant savings if they switched to a new home loan,” the ACCC report states.

“For example, if a borrower with a home loan of around $250,000 switched to a home loan with an interest rate 0.58 per cent lower than their existing loan, they would save over $1400 in interest in the first year. Over the remaining term of the loan that borrower would save over $17,000 in interest in net present value terms.”

While the ACCC recommends lenders provide an annual prompt to variable rate borrowers with a loan of three years or older, providing them with comparative loan information available in the current market, why wait for that call-up?

There are plenty of home loans on the market, offered by shopfront banks and non-bank lenders, for rates below two per cent.

ara Koenen is one step closer to making her international debut, today named in the travelling Origin Diamonds side headed to New Zealand for the Constellation Cup. The shooter has been in preparations for the tournament in addition to the club’s pre-season regime, with Lightning head coach Kylee Byrne praising Koenen’s diligence and dedication.

“The work Cara’s put in since about November to get ready for this series is actually quite amazing,” Byrne says.

“I’ve never seen her this driven and motivated, so this opportunity to now step up on the international stage is huge.

“She’s worked so hard in the last few months to prepare for any circumstance that may come her way.”

Byrne believes Koenen is more than deserving of the opportunity to step out

on court and represent Australia given the standard of netball she produced in 2020 and her ongoing dedication to her craft.

“She keeps talking to me about her first cap and getting that first one under her belt – she’s excited. Cara’s in a really good place right now,” she says.

The tour includes a three-day Diamonds camp based out of Sydney before the squad of 18 athletes travel to Christchurch where they will undergo a managed 14 day quarantine.

The four-match Constellation Cup will commence on March 2 in Christchurch, with the final two games to be played on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March in Tauranga.

All Constellation Cup games will be broadcast live on Nine, 9Gem and the Netball Live Mobile App for Australian audiences.

Isabella Nichols The World Surf League will not compete on the Gold Coast in 2021 with this year’s Australian championship tour events to be held in quarantine bubbles in New South Wales and Western Australia.

Coast locals Julian Wilson, Isabella Nichols, and Keely Andrews will not have the home state advantage they usually receive when the Australian leg begins in Newcastle on April 1.

A second event will then be held at Narrabeen in Sydney’s northern beaches from April 16 to 26 before the championship heads across the country for the Margaret River Pro from May 2.

A final event will then be held at Rottnest Island from May 16 to 26.

WSL Asia-Pacific general manager Andrew Stark says the regular stops at Snapper Rocks and Bells Beach in Victoria are unviable due to the need to establish quarantine bubbles for each event.

Concern over lockdowns, state border restrictions and event cancellations meant neither event was possible in the tour’s opinion.

“This year, the Aussie CT leg is looking very different to what we’re used to due to COVID-19,” Stark says.

Fan’s hopes of getting up close and personal with the NRL premiers and their prized silverware this week have been quashed after Storm cancelled their trip to the Coast.

The Melbourne NRL heavyweights were due to join the Sunshine Coast Lightning for a special fan meet and greet at Sunshine Coast Stadium this Friday before playing a trial game at Redcliffe the next day.

However, with the current Melbourne lockdown and 14-day border closure with Queensland due to a COVID-19 outbreak the Storm were forced to cancel their plans.

NEW LIGHT SHONE ON CALOUNDRA RUGBY PRECINCT Caloundra Rugby Union Club’s future is looking brighter than ever at Lighthouse Park, with the switching on of new federally funded lighting for the ground’s third field. The lights, paid for with a $131,000 grant under the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, are increasing the capacity of the club’s fields for night games and training for rugby and other local sports.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, says that the installation of these new 100 lux lights on Field 3 will benefit more than 2,000 people ever year.

“These new lights will allow Caloundra Rugby Union Club to offer more night-time training, keep their main pitch in better condition, broaden participation for more local women and bring new events and new activities to even more people in our community,” says Mr Wallace.

The grant will provide additional economic benefits to the region, generating more than $1.7 million a year by attracting new sporting carnivals and creating an extra two ongoing jobs. The project supported 15 jobs during construction.

“Grassroots sports clubs like Caloundra Rugby Union Club and Caloundra Oztag help drive increased participation and promote the social, health and community benefits of physical activity. These new lights will not only help the rugby club’s players to train longer and give them the best chance of winning another premiership but will give hundreds of locals far more opportunity to get active and take part in Oztag on these fields,” says Mr Wallace.

Caloundra Rugby Union Club has become a local institution over the past 30 years, with more than 200 registered players. The club hosts touring teams from as far afield as Japan, and provides high-quality fitness plans for players as young as six. The Club’s fields also host the nearly 1,000 regular players of Caloundra’s Oztag Association.

Well, well, well, how good was last weekend? You know you had a good day when you fall asleep during a movie at 7pm. Paddling out at 4.30am was a bit problematic and felt like I was talking myself into a shark attack. Yep, plenty of waves were had and a few boards snapped.
