Deputy Editor Leigh Robshaw reports that: ‘Locals watched in anticipation as the bowling alley rose out of a what was essentially a marine swamp on Mari Street, behind Alexandra Headland.” It was also a popular addition to the Coast’s entertainment scene that mainly consisted of drive-In, skating rink. and cinema.

Forty years later, we are reporting on the demise of the bowling alley and rise of a new entertainment industry – filmmaking. In her cover story journalist Roxanne McCartyO’Kane gives us a snapshot of the

burgeoning Australian industry, drills down to Queensland’s place in the picture and how these initiatives are providing opportunities on the Sunshine Coast. Local resident Laree Gadenne, an actress, writer, producer and director says while there is still room for futher government incentives, when it comes to film-making – “The only true limit is someone’s mind.”

PFIZER VACCINE ONLY SLIGHTLY LESS EFFECTIVE AGAINST MUTATIONS As more research and study results on vaccines are released, a recent study shows that the Pfizer vaccine is still effective in fighting South African variants of COVID-19. people who had been given the vaccine. Its findings are limited, because it does not look at the full set of mutations found in the new South African variant.

However, the scientists are currently engineering a virus with the full set of mutations and expect to have results from that in around two weeks, according to Pei-Yong Shi, an author of the study and a professor at UTMB. The results are more encouraging than another non-peer-reviewed study that was recently done by scientists at Columbia University, which used a slightly

fizer Inc and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine appeared to lose only a small bit of effectiveness against an engineered virus with three key mutations from the new variant found in South Africa, according to a laboratory study.

The study by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), which has not yet been peer-reviewed, showed a less-than two-fold reduction in antibody titer levels, indicating the vaccine would likely still be effective in neutralising a virus with the so-called E484K and N501Y mutations found in the South African variant.

The study was conducted on blood taken from

different method and showed antibodies generated by the shots were significantly less effective against the South Africa variant.

One possible reason for the difference could be that the Pfizer findings are based on an engineered coronavirus, and the Columbia study used a pseudovirus based on the vesicular stomatitis virus, a different type of virus, UTMB’s Mr Shi says. He believes that finding in pseudoviruses should be validated using the real virus.

The study also showed even better results against several key mutations from the highly transmissible UK variant of the virus. Mr Shi says they are also working on an engineered virus with the full set of mutations from that variant as well.

LOW COVID-19 SPREAD IN RURAL WISCONSIN SCHOOLS TAKING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: US STUDY The spread of COVID-19 during in-person learning in rural Wisconsin where student mask wearing was high was significantly lower than in the surrounding community, with no infections among staff members acquired at school, according to a US study published recently.

COVID-19 incidence in the 17 elementary (primary) and high schools was 37 per cent lower than in the community.

This suggests schools could safely open with the right precautions in place, researchers concluded in the report published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Just seven of 191 cases (3.7 per cent) identified among 5530 students and staff members during the period of August 31 to November 29, 2020 were associated with in-school transmission, all in students, researchers reported.

“The absence of identified child-to-staff member transmission during the 13-week study period suggests in-school spread was uncommon,” the researchers said, despite up to a 40 per cent positive COVID-19 test rate in the surrounding county.

Social distancing was required and mask-wearing was reported at more than 92 per cent. Classes were taught in stable cohorts with both lunch and classes taking place indoors. But no systematic COVID-19 screening was conducted in the schools or the community.

The researchers found widespread virus transmission in the surrounding community during the study period, with seven to 40 per cent of COVID-19 tests from Wood County showing positive results.

COVID-19 incidence among students and staff members in the study translated to 3453 cases per 100,000 in schools versus 5466 per 100,000 in the wider community.

The schools in the study included eight elementary schools (up to year six) with 1529 students attending in-person, and nine middle or high schools (Years seven to 12) with 3,347 students attending in-person.

Limits to the study published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report, included that researchers did not check for asymptomatic transmission and that not all teachers reported mask wearing levels.

A nation in the spotlight It’s lights, camera and action for the Australian film industry, and the Sunshine Coast can benefit from global interest in Australian locations, actors and crew.

potting an A-list celebrity is usually an opportunity that comes few and far between, but with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Matt Damon, Zac Efron, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and Toni Collette all gearing up to work from Australia this year, your chances of a star-struck encounter have increased dramatically.

The screen industry is swooning from an abundance of productions being relocated from international locations to within Australia, with a plethora of productions already secured to begin filming in 2021.

Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard has announced his latest feature film, Thirteen Lives, will be shot on the Gold Coast after he was lured to the region by Australian and Queensland government incentives.

In a video released by Ausfilm, Mr Howard says he is “truly thrilled to be able to bring this film to Australia and to be able to work with the talented and skilled Australian film crew members”.

Thirteen Lives is supported through the federal government’s $400 million boost to the Location Incentive, which aims to create a pipeline of international projects, and generate tens of thousands of Australian jobs in the screen industry over many years.

Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich says the state is an attractive option for production companies due to its diversity of locations, from beaches and rainforests through to desert landscapes and urban settings as well as having two of the largest studios in Australia in Village Roadshow and the SQ Studios.

“Queensland Government via Screen Queensland offers competitive incentives for Australian and international producers to film in Queensland and there is a large pool of qualified crew, especially now that many Queensland screen practitioners are returning home, available to work on productions,” Ms Munnich says.

“Competitive commercial incentives are vital; it’s the way the industry operates globally. And yes, it’s a competitive marketplace, both internationally and within Australia.”

Ms Munnich says Queensland was experiencing a production boom well before COVID-19 struck, with Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis feature film and the TV series The Bureau of Magical Things (season two) filming on the Gold Coast, Harrow season three in production in Brisbane, and the hit children’s show Bluey also created in Brisbane.

“Queensland’s current reputation as one of the most COVID-safe production destinations in the world is certainly contributing to the constant demand to film here,” she says. “Some of the Sunshine

Coast locations we market include Moffat Beach and the rock pools at Shelly Beach, the historic townships of Yandina and Kenilworth in the hinterland, the Noosa Everglades and Aussie World.

“As members of the Film Friendly Pathways Program, the best approach [for industry growth in the region] is to continue to work with Screen Queensland to promote the Sunshine Coast’s beautiful film destinations through the locations gallery.”

excitement for Aura resident Laree Gadenne, an Australian actress, writer, producer and director who has worked around the world with her craft.

When it came to creating her latest project, sitcom Hard Knock Life, she decided there was no place like home.

Featuring numerous Coast businesses and locations, the six-part series was created wholly in the region and premiered in April 2019, securing offers from three major distributors in America and Canada.

After signing to Echelon Studios, the show has been picked up on major streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video in the US and UK, Tubi and Plex, which are both distributed worldwide.

Ms Gadenne is ecstatic to see so many US productions filming in the state as it gives cast and crew an opportunity to work alongside international greats.

However, it is a double-edged sword.

Ms Gadenne funded her show with her own savings and a Sunshine Coast Council Regional Arts Development Fund grant and says local content creators would benefit from greater funding opportunities to complete more homegrown projects.

“All levels of government could possibly offer more incentives or extra grant opportunities for local projects to be created,” she says. “However, the only true limit is within someone’s mind. We learnt to be very resourceful with everything here and were extremely lucky to have such a supportive community to assist when filming the show.

The studios are currently booked out for the next few years with the larger US productions, so now would be a great time to offer another venue to film in locally.”

Glass House Mountains-based director and producer Tam Sainsbury agrees.

Ms Sainsbury’s latest project, Perfect Messy Love, is set in Moffat Beach and debuted just before Christmas 2020.

Written by Megan Williams and directed by Ms Sainsbury, its post production was overseen by the dynamic Livia Hanich and Bill Missett. The whole project was filmed and edited in 10 weeks.

“This project was an interesting experience as everything had to come from

within Queensland due to restrictions.

My last project, Time & Place, had cast and crew coming up from Sydney and Melbourne, but this time around I had to source everything from within the state,” Ms Sainsbury says. “While it is amazing that we have so many US productions shooting here, it made it harder for me to find actors and crew that weren’t already working. It is a challenge to compete with the big guys.

“The positive to come out of it was I ended up discovering all these wonderful people and it made me realise just how rich the industry really is here.”

With half of the series based in London, Ms Sainsbury found the perfect location at Malumba Estate in Buderim to double as a Chelsea apartment. “I really think you can do anything here,” she says.

“There are incredible locations, stunning scenery and the community are so willing to get behind you to help.”

While COVID threw up challenges for the industry, Ms Sainsbury says a number of new organisations have sprung up,

“Watch Australian content like Penguin Bloom and The Dry, which are out in cinemas now, and watch Queensland productions online. The ripple effect of that is we can get more happening here on the Coast that will lead to potentially thousands of jobs.

“Just look at what Home and Away did for Palm Beach; it makes areas popular if you can get a series up and running. I would love for Perfect Messy Love and Time & Place to do that for the Sunshine Coast.”

A BRIEF BACKGROUND OF AWARD RECIPIENTS: Cheryl Harris – Citizen of the Year: Ms Harris has been a strong voice and advocate for volunteers for more than 10 years and is Volunteering Sunshine Coast CEO. Due to her collaboration with local government, businesses and community partnerships, there are currently about 64,000 volunteers serving the Coast community.

Ms Harris has assisted people seeking paid employment through the pathways to employment program, co-ordinated volunteers during disasters and referred volunteers to not-for-profit organisations.

he work by outstanding locals was honoured during the annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards last week. The recipients were nominated by the community and selected by a panel of local leaders.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the annual awards again highlighted the outstanding work of so many community-focused citizens and organisations.

“2020 was a year that will never be forgotten for so many reasons, but particularly because we saw our residents come together to support each other like never before,” Mayor Jamieson says.

“All of our award recipients and nominees are truly deserving of these accolades.”

Angelique Hallett – Young Citizen of the Year: Ms Hallett is the founder and director of the social enterprise Loving Hope Bears. Annually on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, 446 children are forced to flee their homes with a parent as a result of domestic violence. For two years, Ms Hallett learnt everything she could about how she could provide a teddy bear to every child in domestic violence shelters on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie. Loving Hope Bears has now delivered more than 300 bears to domestic violence shelters for children.

Carmel Crouch – Senior Citizen of the Year: Ms Crouch’s dedication to providing opportunities for people with a disability began more than 45 years ago when she adopted a son with disabilities. The organisation STEPS was born and Ms Crouch has been a key driver in her voluntary role as chair and president for 33 years.

RCA volunteers have worked with partners to remove more than 3000 kilos of rubbish from local beaches and waterways.

Stephen Ossedryver – Sport and Recreation Award: Mr Ossedryver is a trailblazer in the local mountain biking (MTB) arena. In 2012, on a firefighter exchange to Canada, he was inspired by a MTB club there, and on his return, began developing MTB trails in the Caloundra Town Reserve. As he created new trails and added adventurous features, more

IMPLICATIONS OF RISING BOND YIELDS With confidence of the growth outlook improving and policy stimulus boosting the chances of reflation, bond yields are moving higher again. Investors are concerned but should not be surprised by this, and we expect the moves in bond yields to be orderly. The investment implications of rising bond yields, however, are threefold: 1) underweight fixed income assets; 2) favour equities, particularly cyclicals; and 3) within bond proxies, look at a ‘yield plus’ approach.

Several factors have driven the move higher in bond yields such as better economic data, progress on a COVID-19 vaccine, a “mini blue wave� in the US enhancing the odds of larger fiscal stimulus

there, as well as the soft Brexit deal. These factors have lifted growth and inflation expectations. However, we would argue that the rise in bond yields, so far, is typical of an economy moving from recession to recovery phase, and our forecasts assume further upward pressure on bond yields as that recovery takes shape.

Fears of an inflation and bond market shock this year appear premature to us, given the following: • An incomplete recovery – the global economy is not expected to recover to its pre-pandemic state until after 2021. • Supply side shocks will subside – which will ease inflation in certain industries such as iron ore and food. • Structural challenges – such as an ageing population, globalisation and technological advancements have restricted inflation in the last few cycles. • Central bank objectives – inflation has been well below most central bank goals for an extended period, and we expect they will likely want to see inflation overshoot their objectives for a sustained period before they withdraw their easy monetary conditions.

Notwithstanding our view that a rise in bond yields is manageable, a backdrop of higher bond yields has several implications for investment strategies: • Prefer equities over fixed income – due to

their fixed coupon payments that do not adjust with yields, an environment of rising yields is negative for bond prices.

However, it’s a positive for shares as rising yields are normally a signal of improving growth and inflation prospects, which should improve business profitability.

Hence, we are overweight in equities and underweight in fixed income. • We prefer ‘cyclical’ equities given their leverage to economic growth. Cyclical sectors that typically do well are financials, energy, materials (including miners) and technology. Bond proxies, such as REITs and Utilities, on the other hand tend to underperform in these environments. • We are not suggesting a total exit from ‘bond proxy’ stocks, as they do offer

higher-than-average income, which will become increasingly attractive in this low-interest-rate world. What we are suggesting is to focus on bond proxies that can grow earnings and distributions. A couple of companies that we favour in this part of the market are APA Group, which owns natural gas pipelines, and Waypoint REIT, which owns a portfolio of service station assets.

Those with high support needs can now access an upgraded amenities block at a popular Currimundi park.

O

ne of the Sunshine Coast’s premier parks is now home to the region’s first Changing Places public amenities block, catering for people with high support needs who can’t use accessible toilets.

Located at Currimundi’s Grahame Stewart Park, Sunshine Coast Council division three councillor Peter Cox says the council is committed to improving access and inclusion for the benefit of all residents.

“These new amenities have been built in accordance with the Changing Places guidelines, an initiative which began in the United Kingdom, with the first Changing Places amenities opening in Australia in 2014,” Cr Cox says.

“Changing Places is all about allowing people with high support needs to fully participate in our community.

“Council engaged a Changing Places consultant to ensure the facilities met all requirements for it to become a fully accredited Changing Places location.

“There are 158 Changing Places in Australia and I’m proud the Sunshine Coast can now be added to the map.”

The new facility includes a shower, adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, a

toilet privacy screen and additional circulation space.

The $200,000 project was delivered by Sunshine Coast Council thanks to the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package.

Cr Cox says the upgrade is another boost to the much-loved family park.

“Accessing public toilets is something many of us take for granted, but it’s a real

challenge for certain members of our community.

“The new Changing Places facility truly complements the existing amenities building opened in March 2020.

“Grahame Stewart Park continues to grow and be incredibly popular with families and I know this improvement will make it easier for more people to enjoy this great spot.”

END OF AN ERA FOR ALEX INSTITUTION The man who introduced tenpin bowling to the Sunshine Coast is selling Suncity Tenpin Bowling after 41 years of delivering family-friendly fun to multiple generations. John Griffin reflects on those years with My Weekly Preview. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

amily entertainment options were thin on the ground on the Sunshine Coast in 1979, so it was to much excitement that Suncity Tenpin Bowling opened its doors. Locals watched in anticipation as the bowling alley rose out of a what was essentially a marine swamp on Mari Street, back from Alexandra Headland beach. Owner John Griffin says only low-lying houses stood between the centre and the beach, while the esplanade was a bitumen road just wide enough for two cars.

“We opened on a Friday night,” Mr Griffin says. “The Maroochy mayor, Eddie De Vere, opened it. We had dignitaries and speeches and there was a large queue of people outside the front door waiting to get in. We opened about 9pm that night and there was a charge at the counter. In those days we only had 16 lanes and we were full in a matter of minutes.”

With a drive-in, skating rink, cinema and not much else, the Coast was ready for the excitement of tenpin bowling, an activity that appealed to competition players and families alike.

“We did a lot of teaching in those days,” Mr Griffin says. “I can still remember people who had no idea how to bowl, standing and rolling the ball from between their legs.

“It was a more pleasant format in those days. We didn’t have any computers and it was all hand scoring. You spent a lot of time with people, explaining things. I met people from all over Australia and … the world.

“We had people of all ages and abilities coming in. I think what people love about tenpin bowling is the excitement of seeing the pins fly. People can play against each other; it’s an activity where you can still talk to one another, roll a bowling ball down the lane, laugh when it doesn’t work out.

“One of the things I’m going to miss is the excitement of a young child’s face,

Mr Griffin’s entry into the world of tenpin bowling began in 1968 when he was offered a job at the AMF Tenpin Bowling Centre at Tweed Heads, where he lived. In 1971, AMF transferred him to Canberra, where he did a course in business management. He and his wife Sue decided they wanted to run their own business and settled on the Mari Street site, which was full of sand and clay.

“We formed the company in September 1978, started building with Rod Forrester in November 1978 and finished by July 1979.

When we opened, it was the heyday of league bowling. We had 2000 league bowlers every week in competition. Every morning, Monday to Friday, we had 100 women bowling, followed by another 50 behind them. The night was the same. It was tremendous. We used to have a lot of fun in the early days. We’d have Melbourne

Cup days and the women would come along and dress up. We had the Red Faces night at the end of the year.”

Mr Griffin says he was a reasonable bowler when he came to the Coast and improved over the years, with free access to practise to his heart’s content.

“I’m much more erratic now in my bowling, but I’m regarded by most social players as pretty good. My average is around the 160 mark.”

Mr Griffin says he’s met “an awful lot of nice people” during his 41 years at Suncity, but after enduring the toughest year in the centre’s history last year and increasing competition from licensed bowling alleys, Mr Griffin decided to accept an offer to sell.

Now in his seventies, it’s time to retire and do some travel in an off-road caravan he and his wife recently purchased. The sale will settle in March and it is believed the centre will be replaced with high-rise units.

“I said to my wife it was like cutting my arm off,” he says. “But we’re not closing just

yet. The purchaser is not ready to develop yet so we will go on for another 12 months, maybe even longer. That has made a lot of bowlers happy. If bowling was like it was in the late ’70s and ’80s, someone would willingly jump in and build another one.

These days it has changed a lot.”

When Suncity’s pins are laid to rest, competition bowlers will have to travel to Caboolture to use sport-registered lanes, as they will no longer exist on the Sunshine Coast. This is partly due to a loss of business to establishments like Strike, which serve alcohol.

“I have an issue with a general bowling centre selling a lot of alcohol,” he says. “It doesn’t mix well where you have families and children. It’s a different atmosphere. It’s much quieter and more family friendly when alcohol isn’t in abundance. We did serve alcohol for a little while, but it became too much of a headache and we noticed a change in the clientele. They were less aggressive and less trouble without the alcohol.”

Not only has Mr Griffin seen the nature of tenpin bowling change over four decades, he’s also seen the Sunshine Coast spring up around his bowling alley, but says you can’t halt progress.

“It’s just life. We shouldn’t be surprised; this is a lovely place to live. There are many more people here now than there were in 1978. You can’t stop it.”

Council’s Major Grants program now open – apply today!

Does your community group have a great project idea to make our local communities more active, vibrant, inclusive, resilient or creative? Make it a reality with support from Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Grants Program.

ore than $600,000 is up for grabs in the current Major Grants round, which is open now and closes 15 March.

Eligible not-for-profit organisations can receive up to $15,000 for projects, events and activities that meet community need and provide community benefit. Grants of up to $30,000 are also available for infrastructure projects that involve the development, maintenance or improvement of buildings or land that contribute to providing a safe, accessible and inclusive community facility.

In recognition that fundraising has become a challenge in the current COVID-19-affected environment, Council has temporarily suspended co-funding requirements for grant requests of up to $10,000 and reduced co-funding

requirements to 50 per cent for all requests over $10,000 for this round.

Council’s focus remains on supporting projects that activate the community in a resilient and vibrant way, inject money into the local economy, and are ready to get started and be successfully completed.

Volunteering Sunshine Coast was a successful recipient of Council’s August Major Grants round, receiving $7500 to create Inspiring Youth into Volunteering, a direct marketing campaign that’s set to kick-off this month.

In the initial stages of COVID-19, Volunteering Sunshine Coast identified the mature-aged community, usually our most active volunteers, pulling back.

A small section of North Shore Beach will be temporarily closed to all people and dogs between the hours of 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday from 8 February to mid-March.

This is to provide a refuge for migratory shorebirds while Council pumps sand from the Maroochy River back onto Maroochydore Beach to renourish the beach after recent storms caused some erosion.

FROM THE MAYOR Cr Peter Cox and I were absolutely delighted to open new amenities in Grahame Stewart Park in Currimundi recently, which have been designed specifically for people with high support needs. The new facilities include a shower, adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, a toilet privacy screen and additional circulation space. The new building caters for people who cannot use accessible toilets.

The facilities have been built in accordance with the Changing Places guidelines – an initiative which began in the United Kingdom – with the first Changing Places amenities opening in Australia in 2014.

This $200,000 project was delivered by Sunshine Coast Council with support from the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package. It is projects such as this that really make a difference in terms of how we build an inclusive and caring community.

This follows the successful roll-out of accessible matting and the introduction of beach wheelchairs at Alexandra Headland, Kings, Coolum and Mooloolaba beaches.

A healthy, smart, creative region should be accessible to all – and that is what our Council is seeking to achieve.

On reading Ashley Robinson’s column ‘Making Sense’ (MWP January 14), my darling husband and I thought how that was us just a short time ago. In our household the situation is reversed, with my poor hearing being the bane of our lives for many decades. And, no, it was not selective hearing. A month ago, I got new hearing aids and it is amazing how much better life is now – for both of us.

Previous hearing aids just didn’t cut the mustard, however with the help of an excellent audiologist and the advances in technology, I am now able to have conversations without asking people to constantly repeat themselves.

Ashley, please do yourself a favour and have a hearing test. The ruler of your world will love you even more and you may hear more sweet nothings whispered in your ear.

In (MWP Fast Facts, January 14), you showed a picture of two girls in the fashion of the 1970s wearing what you described as hot pants. My mates and I were keenly interested spectators of that fashion at the time, and believe that the shorts shown were just normal shorts worn before hotpants were invented. To us, hotpants were so named because they were cut high at the back of the leg so that about an inch of cheek was shown. Anyone who was young at that time knows that the more cheek shown, the hotter the pants, so there were degrees of hot ranging from warm to flaming hot.

Bikini beachwear of today on the Sunshine Coast makes the hotpants seem very conservative, but at the time they could fascinate young guys for hours.

We are all aware of the blatant disregard by some people to the law that applies to parking with a disability permit in a designated parking space. I have and will continue to risk the obscene abuse when highlighting this to an offender. Sadly, they have no shame or fear of the consequences should they be caught and fined. It would appear it seems very unlikely they will be caught, as I am yet to see anyone around performing this task. With the technology available today, please consider my thoughts on using an app similar to COVID tracking.

I would have no hesitation to taking a photo of the number plate and location and forwarding details to a designated law enforcement facility to be followed up and charges laid where it is confirmed the law has been broken. Let’s try to have this trialled and see what it can achieve. Relying on respect and consideration doesn’t mean a thing to these serial offenders.

SCUH TO DELIVER VACCINE Sunshine Coast University Hospital will be one of six vaccine hubs in Queensland for round one of the COVID rollout starting in February.

The first phase due to start mid-month will vaccinate high-priority workers and vulnerable people such as those in aged care with the highly effective Pfizer vaccine.

The Pfizer drug, which has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, requires storage temperatures of minus 70 degrees Celsius and comes in bulk packs.

Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says using a major hospital as SCUH as a base would help manage the Pfizer vaccine’s complex logistics.

The other Queensland hospitals will be the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, and Gold Coast University Hospital, Cairns Hospital and Townsville Hospital. “(The Pfizer vaccine) has strict limitations on its storage, transport and distribution which makes it unsuitable for how we would normally roll out a widespread vaccination campaign,” she says. “We have chosen our state’s largest hospitals, from the top and tail of our state.

“Queensland will begin this process as soon as we receive the first Pfizer vaccines from the Federal Government.

“Every day is a step forward in our recovery from this pandemic, but this is a particularly exciting milestone for us all.”

Priority Group 1a would be the first to receive the Pfizer vaccination which includes quarantine and border workers, frontline (COVID) health workers, aged care and disability care staff and aged care and disability care residents.

“When it’s appropriate for you to get a vaccine, I urge you all to do so,” Dr Young says. “Queensland has fared so well during this pandemic because of the public’s responsiveness. I thank you all.

“We are ensuring we first protect the people who need it most. These are the people who are most at risk of exposure and severe disease.”

ROUND OR SQUARE?

Ashley Robinson has a series of mishaps worthy of a Quentin Tarantino film and lives to tell the tale.

Sami Muirhead says Aussies eat 270 million meat pies a year, but when it comes to round or square, only one shape is correct.

he wedding, the passengers, the umbrella, the races the Duporth, the suit, the shoes, the tray of champagne and the love is a sequence of events a bit like it was written

by Quentin Tarantino.

Scene 1: Get home from work on a tight schedule to gather up old mate and take her to a wedding. Of course she isn’t there, she’s at the dump. Nothing can interfere with Saturday at the tip’s recycling plant.

There is a note on the bench to tell me that and that we are giving some young friends a lift to the wedding that is on in just under an hour. Old mate gets home from the dump in no apparent hurry, but still gets ready before me.

Scene 2: The umbrella. I rush out to the car and rearrange the back seat, pushing a bag onto the floor and my golf umbrella into the corner. Pick up the friends, get to the wedding service on time.

Scene 3: Old mate decides to go home in between the service and the reception. I volunteer quietly to go with her but get told to stay with the friends. Awesome – Duporth schooners and horse racing.

Scene 4: The umbrella. Pretending not

to be excited, I offer to go get the car, as it is parked about a kilometre away, but as soon as I’m out of sight I’m keen to get to the pub, so much so that I jump in and spear myself in the bum with the umbrella (that had moved), and rip the whole backside out of my suit pants and leave a nasty scar that now compliments my face, so now had a bum that looks like my face. But far worse than the injury, I now have to go home as well.

Scene 5: The shoe. When I pull up, old mate is surprised to get the passenger door open but quick to tell me she has just broken her shoe, so we compare notes and injuries on the way home. Her shoes had come from the dump and I ask if maybe that is why they were there.

Scene 6: Finally, the wedding. The waiter drops a full tray of bubbling champagne right in front of me. I’m thinking the drama is over until old mate tells me her shoes are broken, again, this time looking like Beppo The Clown’s flapping numbers. Dump shop?

Thanks to alcohol, things do get better, apart from my bum and a limping other half.

o you love a pie as much as I do? A pie is a hug for the soul.

A warm way of making us feel we will all find our way in the world if we just sit back and take in the goodness. The only thing I love more than a pie is a pie pimped with peas and mashed potato. A large family pie warms the hearts and bellies of my kids on a Friday night.

I feel I am truly winning in life when I double down and serve a meat pie on the menu for dinner, followed by hot apple pie for dessert.

Whenever I visit my brother on the Gold Coast, I feel quite smug on the way home when I look heaven-bound and see the big pie in the sky as I pull into the Yatala pie shop drive-through and stock up on pie supplies for my freezer. The landmark bakery sells over 3500 pies a day.

My work buddy and I came to blows this week over the humble pie. Toddy insists the best and only pie he will eat is a square pie. I scoffed at this ridiculous statement, as we all know round pies are the only shape fit to serve our national dish.

What sort of crazy person would actually

condone a square pie? Toddy had some twit argument that square pies are structurally more sturdy and therefore less messy to eat.

But then Toddy believes in lots of conspiracy theories, such as the moon landing being fake, so perhaps I should just ignore his rantings or else report him to our boss for slandering the reputation of pies.

“My work buddy and I came to blows this week over the humble pie” We consume 270 million pies every year in Australia. The national pie awards are held every year and run by the Baking Association of Australia. The Pepper Beef Pie by Country Cob Bakery in the Victorian town of Boronia, was awarded the top gong last year and has won for the past three years in a row. My dream is to go on a road trip this year and taste the award-winning parcel of pastry perfection. Pie in the sky.

Now that would be truly living.

WHEN EVERYDAY LIFE IS A ‘DISORDER’ Human nuances, differences and even problems are not usually medical ailments.

But with peak bodies such as the World Health Organisation expanding its list of recognised diseases to include Gaming Addiction and Reward Deficiency Syndrome, it would be easy to think we are all, in some way, desperately ill.

Life’s ups, downs and the ride in between are now so often framed in terms of disorder or illness. The basket of pathologised behaviours is positively bulging.

A person who really likes gaming, exercising, watching a particular sport or

even reading may well be hooked, but do they suffer from a disorder? Surely only those whose lives are being harmed by it.

One thing we do seem addicted to is medicalising our lives. What is normal but uncomfortable becomes atypical and needs a doctor to assess it.

We seem to want medical affirmation of illness rather than assurance that not all sicknesses, life stages or conditions are here to stay.

It started a generation or so ago with the tendency for people to go to the doctor with a sniffle and expect to leave gripping an antibiotics prescription. And it has mushroomed from there.

The regular ebb and flow of conditions and circumstances in life have become reason for intervention. Being sad after a loss, tired after an illness and cautious after a big knockback is normal, not a disorder.

It starts young. If a child is having a hard time at school, acting out or seeming a bit sad, it does not take long for anxiety, depression or ADHD to be mentioned – and with lightning speed comes

suggestions of medication.

A naughty, frustrated or recalcitrant child is now slapped with a recognised medical label: Conduct Disorder or Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

To suggest behaviour modification, support in dealing with life’s knocks and implementing a little tough love instead of medical intervention is seen as naïve and old-school.

The recent rise of so-called Body Image Dissatisfaction is another area of concern. It is grounds for teenagers to get a bit of surgical help – and is blamed on the so-called Kardashian effect or Instagramification of their lives.

Instead of riding out a gawky stage or waiting for their bodies to settle into adulthood, their unhappiness about not having lumps in the right places can end with pumped up lips, sky-high cheek bones or – shock, horror – a chest or tummy created out of a surgeon’s imaginings.

It is as if bodies and minds need to be manicured and trained, like a bonsai, with trimming and lopping starting early.

Never mind that an individual’s mind and body quirks can be their most endearing qualities.

In The Medicalization of Society, Dr Peter Conrad found making every human condition a medical problem was becoming more prevalent and that had massive implications for society’s productivity, healthcare costs and collective wellbeing.

Life can be rough, but humans are built for struggle. We must be allowed to get practice to be able to endure and grow.

And – importantly – there is no pill for that.

SUNSHINE COAST WOMAN TAKES TO THE SKIES TO CELEBRATE 90 YEARS Rosalie Fryer had a wish for her 90th, and her family made sure it was fulfilled. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Rosalie Fryer recently celebrated her 90th birthday

Sunshine Coast woman with a love of fashion has celebrated a significant milestone, proving age is no barrier to soar to new

heights.

Rosalie Fryer turned 90 on January 25 and her birthday wish was to see the Sunshine Coast from above with a sea plane flight, her daughter Lorisa tells My Weekly Preview.

Born in New South Wales in 1931, Rosalie grew to love fashion, working at June Millinery in Sydney before meeting her husband Ron. “She met my dad who was in the Air Force for 27 years,” Lorisa says.

Lorisa says the family lived in Victoria, relocating to Queensland after her father’s time with the Air Force.

“They had some relatives who lived in Noosa so they drove up, but it wasn’t for them,” Lorisa says. “Then as they were coming back over the headlands at Alexandra Headland, Dad saw all the yachts and said, ‘this is the place for me’.

“They bought a block at the top of Mary Street and built the family home, which they have owned for more than 40 years. We used to ride the motorbikes up and down there; there was nothing, no units back in those days.”

Rosalie is well-known in the community for her store, Lady Tara Bridal Boutique, which she operated for many years near the Maroochydore McDonald’s until her retirement two decades ago.

She has four children and Lorisa says

“too many” grandchildren to count. The official tally sits at 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-, great-grandchildren – not to forget her 11-year-old poodle Roxy.

To celebrate her birthday, relatives gathered at the family home before Rosalie’s air adventure with Paradise Seaplanes on Australia Day. “She loved every minute of it.”

The occasion was bittersweet as it was also an opportunity to scatter Ron’s ashes in Mooloolaba bay after his death last year.

“Dad passed away in April and we haven’t been able to give him a funeral,” Lorisa says. “We were unable to see him towards the end due to lockdowns; it was a tough time. “[Rosalie] has struggled a little bit since Dad has gone, but we have all gathered around her. I think it was a bit of finality for [her] to say goodbye to him properly. The way that we sent him off was perfect because he loved sailing.”

Rosalie and Ron were married for 64 years.

Lorissa describes her mother as well-presented and someone who enjoys being social. “She loves her shopping.”

And her secret to 90 years?

“Mum’s philosophy is she has always kept active and socialising with her friends.

“She like a wine – she doesn’t mind a wine or a gin and tonic every now and then.”

Chloe and Leanne Paix teach Jazzercise in Nambour

DANCING UP A STORM Dance duo proves Jazzercise is perfect for all ages. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

passion running through the veins of Leanne Paix is bringing a lesser-known form of exercise into the 21st century through Jazzercise Nambour & Cooroy.

Ms Paix has been in the dance industry for more than 30 years and has taught Jazzercise for most of that time, and she

says she works to prove this style of dance is not “old fashioned”.

“A lot of people haven’t heard about [Jazzercise] and a lot still think it is in the generation of 100 years ago,” she says. “It is dance fitness; it is based on jazz dance.”

Ms Paix says she constructs Jazzercise routines by teaching different blocks of

choreography and using repetition. For example, you might do block A, B and C of choreography and then go back to block B. There are more than 20 classes each week, ranging from early morning to late afternoon and weekend times, and each one focuses on a different style of workout.

“We do strength, we do cardio, we do strike, we do interval fusion, we do everything. It is a lot of fun.”

Ms Paix began her Nambour studio nine years ago after time off to have children and look after her son Joshua, who lives with cerebral palsy.

“I started in a little church hall and then I found a space in Nambour for a studio,” she says.

Now Jazzercise has grown in popularity for all ages and is inclusive of various abilities, with her 18-year-old daughter Chloe also an instructor.

“Most people are aged between 30 to 60,” Ms Paix says “I have one young lady who is under the NDIS and she comes to class two times a week.

“I’ve had one lady who just turned 70.”

Every year, Jazzercise Nambour holds a fundraiser, having supported the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation in Buderim for seven years and recently fundraising for multiple sclerosis.

GARDEN GROUP NOW A LEADING EDUCATOR Do you know the story behind Yandina Community Gardens?

The gardens began in 2001 after a group of interested residents requested a plot of land from then Maroochy Shire Council to set up a community garden.

The following year the council donated a disused basketball and tennis court and the Maroochy Community Permaculture Group was established.

It was later renamed Yandina Community Gardens in 2011.

Over the years volunteers have worked to transform and expand the site, which is now a leading permaculture education

The garden is also a key part of the Food Waste Loop project, which diverts food waste from local businesses, like cafes, into dedicated composting systems.

POLICE BRIEFS Coolum Police is advising residents in the Coolum division to lock their vehicles and property after a recent spate of thefts.

Coolum Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Hardy Wirth stresses the importance of securing vehicles.

“A current emerging trend in criminal activity within our district is occurring, where offenders are accessing underground car parks,” he says. “Offenders are both stealing from vehicles and stealing vehicles – particularly high-end vehicles.

“The majority of these offenders have targeted underground residential car parks.”

He urges residents and guests to secure their vehicles, not to leave valuables in their cars and to ensure vehicles are parked in a locked garage, where possible. Remotes should be removed from vehicles.

Coolum Police also urge local accommodation houses to tighten security.

In great news for division 10, construction is nearing completion of the new Nambour Connection Road pathway.

It runs from the Coles Express (Shell Panorama) to Magnolia Street. Council is working with local street artists to produce an attractive and appropriate decoration of the concrete barrier. Street art will be applied to both sides of the barrier.

The pathway is approximately 950 metres long. There are three sections of cantilevered walkway required by the steep slopes at the side of the road. A concrete barrier and guardrail will be in place to protect pedestrians using the pathway. The pathway will also have LED lighting along its entire length. This is an important feature as this is a dark area.

The project completes a missing pathway link and improves safety on the route between Nambour Christian College, the Nambour town centre and residential areas.

popular coffee destination has launched its third cafe on the Sunshine Coast with Mooloolaba-based The Colombian Coffee Co opening in The MET in the new Maroochydore CBD. The Colombian Coffee Co director Daniel Mejia (pictured) says he is excited to be located in the new CBD precinct after finding success since he first opened his cafe six years ago.

This year in addition to existing teams in the junior, youth and women’s spaces, the Jets are looking to welcome two new teams under their wing – an under 12s side and a senior men’s team. The under 12s is set to form another link in their mission to create a player pathway from Auskick, starting at five years old right through to seniors.

Interest shown in early pre-season men’s training sessions continues to grow and is readying for an exciting year. The Jets welcome coach Ashley Rosenow’s return to the club. Ash shares the Jets values of creating an environment where players of all backgrounds can develop AFL skills in a fun and safe environment, Thanks to small group of volunteers, the club successfully kicked off in 2009.

North Shore is a gender-balanced club and proudly supported females in AFL and in 2013 they fielded their first U15s girls team. The culture of strengthening

female participation continues today with the club a pioneer in the recruitment and development of female players. Their Senior women’s team has been taking to the field for the past two seasons and are revving their engines for their third.

An information day will be held at their grounds on Sunday, February 7, from 10am to 2pm, with kids’ games, a sausage sizzle and members ready to answer your

questions. Registration is open for women and children. Men’s team registrations to open shortly.

T

he Sunshine Coast has a new world record holder after a mammoth 24-hour fitness challenge pushing the body to its absolute limits.

Russell Stringer and Jamie Milne set out to complete the excruciating Murph

challenge, aiming to break the previous record of 19.75 rounds in 24 hours.

The Murph workout is named after US Navy Seal Michael Patrick â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Murphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005.

One round consists of a 1.6-kilometre

run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 200 squats and another 1.6-kilometre run, all done consecutively while wearing a 10-kilogram weight vest.

Mr Milne, owns Jamie Milne Training in Warana, and Mr Stringer began a strict training regime on October 1 in

preparation for the January 21 event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Russell and I knew from the get-go that this would be a really unique journey,â&#x20AC;? Mr Milne says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unlike any other event that we had done, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t train for intensity or to our peak as you would for say an ultramarathon or a triathlon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For this particular event we actually had to train our bodies to an optimum state so that we could maintain 70 per cent out of 100 per cent for 24 hours.â&#x20AC;?

Unfortunately, on the day and despite his best efforts, Mr Milne reluctantly bowed out after 11 rounds with major cramps.

It was here Mr Stringer took on the challenge solo, eventually breaking the world record with 20.15 rounds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am still a bit gobsmacked at the athlete and the human that is Russ,â&#x20AC;? Mr Milne says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lots of people have alluded to how precise he was, how humble he was, and his first squat in round one looked no different in round 20. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can honestly say his composure and even the way he gently encouraged me without crushing my ego when I knew I was breaking down â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he was supportive all the way.â&#x20AC;?

The team used the event to raise nearly $15,000 for Dementia Australia, a cause close to Mr Milneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart after losing his grandmother to the disease.

Mr Milne holds the Guinness World Record for most double under skips in 12 hours completed in August last year.

PROBUS CLUB IS BACK After a challenging year in 2020, the Probus Club of Kawana Waters is running again.

“During last year we managed to keep the club active through Zoom sessions for our armchair travel group and the book club group,” the club’s Anna Firmin says. “We got away on a bus trip to Cherbourg before the disruption and, using Sinclair’s Tours in December we enjoyed a festive high tea at Parliament House in Brisbane.

“Our next trip is to Gympie to experience the Mary Valley Rattler.”

Caloundra Evening VIEW Club put a different spin on mask wearing at its January Friendship Dinner.

The dinner was a social evening giving members an opportunity to gather after the Christmas break.

“Guests were required to arrive ‘en masque’, resulting in the appearance of a great variety of decorative masks, from feathered formal styles to vibrant, glittering Mardi Gras versions,” the club’s Glenda Galway says.

“Inevitably, these fashions created a very jovial atmosphere for our meeting at

the picturesque Caloundra Golf Club.”

The club will resume regular activities with the annual general meeting at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on February 9 at 6.30pm.

VIEW Clubs are an arm of The Smith Family Charity. “Our club conducts low-key fundraising to sponsor the educational expenses of local students, in the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in our community,” Ms Galway says.

DETERMINED STROKE SURVIVOR NOW TRAINING FOR STATE SWIMMING COMPETITION Sunshine Coaster Cindy Moore survived but now she wants to thrive, both on land and in the pool. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

fter a life-threatening stroke left a Sunshine Coast mother of three clinging to life, five years on she is preparing to achieve one of her biggest goals.

Cindy Moore, 55, is training to compete in the Masters Swimming Queensland state championships happening in Kawana in April.

The journey to compete has been met with a long road of difficulties and rehabilitation since a major stroke in September 2016.

Ms Moore suffered a haemorrhagic stroke, or a ruptured blood vessel, causing a bleed in the left side of her brain, requiring emergency surgery in Brisbane to relieve pressure.

It was touch and go with doctors telling the family half of patients die within 30 days of an aneurism rupture and about half of the survivors will have irreversible brain damage.

Her father, known simply as ‘China’ recalls visiting Ms Moore regularly during a 10-month rehabilitation at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

“The stroke had affected the left hemisphere of her brain, which destroyed her language processing, leaving her unable to speak and affected the right side of her body,” he says.

“Her right arm was bent at an angle of 90 degrees from her elbow and the fingers were bunched tightly in a ball.

“Her right leg and ankle was slightly twisted, making it almost impossible to

orthotic leg support for her ankle and months of rehabilitation she is now able to walk.

Over time and living permanently with her mother and stepfather in Caloundra, Ms Moore’s condition improved with her speech returning.

“Her right leg and ankle was slightly twisted, making it almost impossible to walk”

Cindy Moore suffered a major stroke in 2016 and is now training to compete at the Masters Swimming state championships walk, however, [on] the left side of her body, her eye sight and her hearing was normal.”

Ms Moore’s leg was straightened using several plaster casts, and thanks to an

“I thought if I could get her into the water she could remove her leg brace and move more freely,” he says.

“I organised to take her for an hour a day three days a week.

“She enjoyed this newfound freedom and we walked [in the water] and performed arm and leg exercises for the full hour.”

Ms Moore eventually learned to keep herself on the surface of the water, mastering a dolphin kick with her left foot.

“After about six weeks she could swim across the pool using only her left arm and leg and she was elated,” China says.

Unfortunately, not long after, Ms Moore slipped at her mother’s house, leaving her in need of a hip replacement and out of the water for several months.

Then just as she began swimming again, pools closed due to COVID. Once pools reopened, Ms Moore slowly regained momentum and began swimming long lengths underwater. It was then she shared her ambition to swim in the upcoming championships, which her father is also competing in.

“As a father I explained to her that competing in a 50-metre pool may be a bit adventurous at this stage, but she was determined.

“No matter just how much I tried I could not win.

“She did not care if she came last, but she just wanted to have a go.”

Ms Moore is now training with the Cotton Tree Masters Swimming Club, giving her three months to prepare to compete at a state level.

“There [are] still a lot of difficulties to be overcome, such as getting her into the water and getting her out; she cannot use the ladder and getting her to follow the black line, but these are only small problems,” China says.

“She is a fighter and an inspiration to others.”

The championships are set to be held from April 9 to 11.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT: HEALTHY SUNSHINE COAST IS BACK FOR 2021

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular fitness and wellness programs for the whole community to enjoy and benefit from is back and just in time for people to tackle their New Year’s resolutions for 2021.

Now in its fifth year, Sunshine Coast Council’s Healthy Sunshine Coast program will roll out across the region from the first week of February, with a return of its Choose to Move campaign offering free and affordable activities in local parks and community venues.

Community portfolio councillor David Law is urging people to join the movement by registering for Healthy Sunshine Coast and selecting activities to attend to set you on the path to improved health in 2021.

“We know 2020 was a challenging year for many people and we’re so pleased to be able to offer Healthy Sunshine Coast to our community once again,” Cr Law says.

“It’s a fun and affordable way to choose to move and connect to others in your local area. The program will help

make 2021 their best and healthiest year yet.

“From February, many popular classes will return including indoor and outdoor exercise sessions, group fitness, yoga and Zumba with more free activities and new classes in different locations.

“A key focus of our Sunshine Coast Community Strategy 2019-2041 is to empower our community to live healthy and active lifestyles, which we hope to achieve this year through Healthy Sunshine Coast.”

Yoga teacher Eleisha Gleeson will be leading Healthy Sunshine Coast’s free community yoga in the Contemplation Garden at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, Tanawha.

“There’s something very special about the Botanic Gardens. It’s a beautiful, open tranquil space where we get to connect with nature, the fresh air and even natural wildlife,” Ms Gleeson says.

“We’ve had owls there before, tree snakes and even a bush turkey wander past. The animals really tap into the energy, especially the kookaburras who will come down during the final relaxation.

“The most important thing people need to know is that yoga is for everyone and you will be very welcome at these classes.

“It’s not designed for a particular type of person or body. Regardless of your fitness level and experience this is a class for everyone to be part of.”

It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and become part of a healthy activity community.

Options for back and neck pain I would never recommend surgery to one of my patients unless all other treatment options had been tried to allow the body to heal naturally.

How to resolve parenting disputes outside court Most people have heard horror stories of expensive legal bills, increased animosity and long delays waiting for an outcome in the family court system. What to talk about together with your partner, without your children present: • How are our children going?

• What do we need more information about?

When you are discussing issues be specific and future focussed. Ask yourself: “Can I explain this? Can I be flexible?”.

If discussions are not possible or prove unsuccessful, the next step is to engage a mediator. Oral cancer is one of the major cancers in Australia, and can be exacerbated by consuming alcohol or cigarettes. The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in colour. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a serious issue, including oral cancer.

Oral cancer can emerge as a range of different symptoms. If you experience any of the following signs it is important to book an appointment: reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth; a sore/ulcer that fails to heal and bleeds easily; a lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth; chronic sore throat or hoarseness; or difficulty in chewing or swallowing.

These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck. Pain does not always occur.

Your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. You can tell a lot about what is happening in your body by looking at your mouth. Be aware of your mouth for any changes. Do not ignore any persistent lumps or sores.

There’s no denying, injuries are one of the main roadblocks in anyone’s fitness journey. I have always said goal number one is, don’t get injured because no matter what dreams you have, you will find it challenging to achieve your goal if you sustain an injury.

However, if you are battling injures, it’s particularly important to focus on what you can do, not what you cannot do. Active recovery is the key.

Active recovery simply means to keep moving while injured, but only as long as you are not likely to do more harm.

The reason is exercise encourages blood flow, which in turn aids and helps repair injuries. You will also find that it is easier to stick to a nutrition plan when you stay disciplined and focused on an exercise plan.

As an example, if you have a knee injury, focus on training your upper body, and if you have a shoulder injury, you can do more then enough exercise with your lower body while resting your injured body part.

But most importantly keep your chin up, keep smiling, never drop your bundle and stay focused on the goal at hand.

Well, this weekend is looking a lot of fun, in particular Sunday with light offshore winds. Amazing we get excited over small waves! Nonetheless got to grab what we can. Any bets on when our first cyclone might hit? Not sure what is happening with the world tour anymore. I guess it will be called off for another 12 months as travelling anywhere seems very problematic. Given most of the sponsors are dumping their athletes, it will be a different world when this all ends. Me? It’s the first time in 21 years I won’t be snowboarding, but living here is pretty special, so I won’t complain.
