January’s reputation is often founded on how you felt about your Christmas holidays, which, considering the good weather and reduced number of COVID cases in Queensland, meant many of us enjoyed the break. I always feel a touch of nostalgia at the end of January because it heralds the end of the lazy, hazy atmosphere of summer holidays. It means the start of February, the month that synchronises with students back to school, office workers fiercely tapping away on keyboards and tradies extra busy with job scheduling.

As COVID-19 vaccines roll out across the globe, The World Health Organisation calls for countries and drug makers to do better.

lobal deaths from coronavirus are expected to top 100,000 per week “very soon” from more than 93,000 reported recently, the World Health Organisation’s top emergency expert Mike Ryan says.

The Americas region accounted for about 47 per cent of current deaths, while in Europe, cases and deaths were stabilising but at a high level, he says.

“Currently our epidemiological situation is dynamic and uneven; it’s further complicated by variants.”

This comes as WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warns the world was on the brink of “catastrophic moral failure” in sharing COVID-19 vaccines.

Dr Tedros has criticised drug makers’ profits and vaccine inequalities, saying it’s “not right” that younger, healthier adults in wealthy countries get vaccinated against COVID-19 before older people or healthcare workers in poorer countries. He laments

Josh Frydenberg has rejected a proposal to extend JobKeeper payments for the hard-hit hospitality industry.

Restaurant and catering chief Wes Lambert wants taxpayer-funded wage assistance extended for six months beyond March for businesses hit by coronavirus-induced lockdowns and border restrictions.

But the treasurer ruled out the idea in a written response published by The Australian on Friday.

“We recognise the challenges faced by the accommodation and food services industry,” Mr Frydenberg wrote.

“However, given the unprecedented levels of support announced by the commonwealth and state and territory governments, I consider that existing policy settings will continue to support a strong economic recovery and we are not contemplating a ‘Hospo-Keeper’ package at this time.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned businesses to prepare for the wage subsidy scheme to end on March 31.

JobSeeker unemployment benefits are scheduled to be slashed on that date.

Mr Morrison argued there was no such thing as “free money”.

“Australian taxpayers can’t underwrite the Australian economy forever,” he told 4BC radio.

“JobKeeper, JobSeeker, all those big programs that we introduced back in the early part of last year, they did an incredibly important job.

“But we were pretty clear up front that was not something that could be sustained forever.”

that one poor country received a mere 25 vaccine doses while more than 39 million doses had been administered in nearly 50 richer countries.

“Just 25 doses have been given in one lowest income country – not 25 million, not 25,000, just 25. I need to be blunt: the world is on the brink of a catastrophic moral failure,” Dr Tedros says.

He did not specify the country but a WHO spokeswoman identified it as Guinea.

“It’s right that all governments want to prioritise vaccinating their own health workers and older people first,” he says.

“But it’s not right that younger, healthier adults in rich countries are vaccinated before health workers and older people in poorer countries. There will be enough vaccine for everyone.”

Dr Tedros, an Ethiopian, nonetheless hails the scientific achievement behind rolling out coronavirus vaccines less than a year after the virus was first detected in China, where a WHO-backed team has now been deployed to look into the origins of the pandemic.

“Vaccines are the shot in the arm we all need, literally and figuratively,” Dr Tedros says.

“But we now face the real danger that even as vaccines bring hope to some, they become another brick in the wall of inequality between the worlds of the haves and have-nots.”

He notes the WHO-backed COVAX program, which aims to get vaccines out to all countries based on need, has so far secured two billion vaccine doses from five producers and options on a billion doses more.

“We aim to start deliveries in February,” he says.

“COVAX is ready to deliver what it was created for.”

That target date could be a tall order because a key producer of vaccines for the developing world – the Serum Institute of India – has not confirmed a date and predicted that its roll-out might not happen before March or April.

10 Things You Need To Know Before You Buy A Mattress You don’t buy a new bed every day. So you want to get it right.

Especially when you can easily spend $1,000, $2,000, and even $5,000 or more at a department or specialty bedding store (that is, if you don’t know better).

With so many different brands, different prices, and so-called discounts, it can be very confusing to know which mattress to choose. Here are 10 things you need to know before you buy a new mattress.

ONE: Same Mattress, Different Name Have you wondered why no two store sells the same mattress?

Although they look similar, the name at one department store is different to another, which is different to the chain speciality bedding stores.

The truth is, most mattresses in Australia are made by 3 companies. But, to make it diffi cult for you to compare mattresses (and prices) from one store to another, the manufacturer puts a different label on the mattress depending on which store is selling it.

So, the only difference between the $1,000 mattress you are looking at in one store, and the $1,500 mattress in another store, may be the label.

does not affect the feel. But it will make a big difference to how long your mattress will last. Density is what costs money. So before you buy a mattress, be sure to ask about the density of the foams inside.

The first layer (on top of the springs) is usually the lowest density (20-25kg/m2 is usually fi ne for this layer). But many manufacturers continue to use low density (20kg/m2 or lower) for the top comfort layers. While you won’t notice this when you first feel your new mattress, it will become obvious as the foam breaks down and you end up sleeping in a hollow (sometimes as quickly as just a few months).

FIVE: Specialty Foam Memory foam is a term used to describe foams that have a slow ‘bounce’. In other words, once de-pressed, they take a few seconds to regain their original shape. Gel foam is a term used to describe foam that is infused with a special gel substance. Both memory and gel foams feel similar to touch.

But because some people find memory foams hot to sleep on (due to the fact you tend to sink into the foam more), the addition of gel particles encourages air flow and a cooler sleeping surface. Although used as a marketing gimmick by many manufacturers, we do see some benefit in using gel infused memory foam if you tend to feel hot when you sleep.

TWO: Springs Apart from straight foam and straight latex mattresses (which are not very common), all mattresses contain springs.

Some have Bonnell Springs (hour glass shaped springs held between a wire hoop at the top and bottom) or Pocket Springs (individual springs that are independently wrapped in a thin layer of fabric).

No matter what fancy names manufacturers give their springs, or what quantity of springs or zones their mattresses have, they are essentially the same. In fact, most springs are made by one manufacturer in China and shipped in compressed form to mattress companies all around the world including Australia.

Pocket Spring mattresses tend to cost a little more than Bonnell Spring mattresses but offer a genuine advantage in terms of less partner disturbance.

THREE: Edge Support In order to maintain support right to the edges, an extra piece of wire can be connected to the top and bottom hoops of a Bonnell Spring mattresses and a strong foam box can be added to a Pocket Spring Mattress.

Edge supports add genuine benefi t because they allow you to sleep or sit right on the edge of the bed without the side collapsing.

Edge supports should add around $100 to the price of a Bonnell Spring mattress and around $200 to the price of a Pocket Spring mattress depending if the support goes all the way around or if it is just added to the sides.

FOUR: Foam The type of foam used in a mattress will not only affect its feel, it will signifi cantly affect the longevity of the mattress.

Foams are measured in two ways. Firstly there is the feel – hard or soft. Then there is the density – high or low. The feel is what makes one mattress plush and another firm. The density is what makes one foam last longer than another.

You can get a soft mattress in low or high density. Density

SIX: Latex Like foam, not all latex is the same. Genuine latex is highly elastic and will last for many years. Synthetic and hybrid latex becomes brittle over time.

SEVEN: Pillow Top The term pillow top refers to the extra comfort layers usually only on one side of the mattress. This provides an extra soft sleeping surface for those who like a plush feel. Once again, the most important thing is what is inside the pillow top – namely, the density of foam. A low density foam may feel luxurious at fi rst, but as it breaks down you may feel like you are sleeping in a hollow.

Eight: Non-Flip Mattresses In some ways, this is another industry gimmick. The fact that most people don’t like to flip their mattress each month has lead manufacturers to say things like ‘non-flip technology’.

What this really means is that the mattress only has comfort layers on one side. So in a way, this has enabled manufacturers to save money on manufacturing while charging more. A mattress that can be fl ipped will generally last twice as long as a single side mattress (provided you do actually flip it).

NINE: Plush Top

TEN: Are Expensive Mattresses Worth It? As you now know, the internal components of most mattresses are pretty much the same. And the most important part is the comfort layers (i.e. the density / quality of the foam). But no matter what fancy names are given to a mattress or it’s components – including terms relating to the type or number or springs – if you’re paying $5,000 for a mattress, we think you are being ripped off.

Some people like the look and feel of the ‘cloud-like’ comfort layers incorporated into the quilting of some mattresses.

The problem is, this layer usually flattens quickly. Some salespeople say, “Your mattress will settle and mould to your body shape over time.” The truth is, the fluffy quilting is simply getting flat. W

hen a fire was deliberately lit in Noosa last Wednesday, the outcome could not have been better. As a group of 80 stakeholders gathered at Noosa Aerodrome, they witnessed a revolutionary firefighting detection and response system in action that could put an end to catastrophic fires both here and overseas. And the best part?

All three companies involved in the demonstration, streamed around the world, are from the Sunshine Coast.

Space intelligence company Fireball International from Peregian, Helitak Firefighting Equipment from Noosaville and McDermott Aviation from Cooroy joined forces to show the world just how fast they can detect a fire and extinguish it.

“It was not a fire day; it was raining and cloudy and our system still picked it up within three minutes,” says Fireball’s CEO and managing director, Christopher Tylor.

“We had temporary cameras installed in Mount Tinbeerwah and Marcus Beach.

The fire was lit, and we would usually pick it up within a minute, but it was a very cold, small fire lit on barbecue coals inside a 44-gallon drum and covered with a hay bale on top. The wind was blowing, and the smoke was not really visible but

both cameras picked up the fire.

“All the stakeholders were utterly impressed. You have to put it in perspective.

Now we have demonstrated a system that can pick up a fire in a minute and with the resources already available to them on the Sunshine Coast, we can attack the fire when it is still small, which massively reduces the power of the fire to get big. The key is early detection and early attack.”

The resources he’s referring to are Helitak’s expandable water tanks, which can drop multiple loads of water on a fire in a short space of time combined with McDermott Aviation’s helicopters.

Currently, bushfires in Queensland are primarily detected when a member of the public calls Triple Zero (000). According to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson, the vast majority of all bushfire notifications that QFES receives are either via Triple Zero calls or direct calls to QFES’ Fire Communication Centres.

“QFES is aware of a number of companies developing early fire-detection systems and appreciates that early detection is a very useful tool for the suppression of bushfires,” the spokesperson says.

“It is important to note, however, that

improved detection times do not necessarily lead to significant improvements in the arrival time of resources, considering the vast expanse of Queensland.

“QFES is constantly looking to refine and improve future operations, and while there have been significant improvements made in new and innovative fire-related software and systems, careful consideration must always be given to any emerging technology to ensure that it positively impacts the delivery of emergency services.”

Mr Tylor says, “We haven’t seen anything yet in regard to fires and it will be imperative to detect fires early in order to put them out quickly. Right now, we can’t do that, because we are relying on humans to pick up the phone and call.”

According to CSIRO research, fires can grow by 300 per cent within the first two hours of ignition and every 10-minute delay in detecting a fire can result in it spreading by 1500 square metres.

Fireball circumvents the need to rely on Triple Zero calls by taking supernova research and flipping it upside down to detect fires on the ground instead of exploding stars in space. The technology

was originally developed by University of Southern Queensland Adjunct Professor Carl Pennypacker, a hero of Mr Tylor’s when he studied his PhD in astrophysics.

Based at the Peregian Digital Hub, the company is run by a team of 16 scientists and professionals in the fields of astrophysics, biology, data science, fire ecology and mathematics. Its real-time satellite images, ground cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence can find bushfires within minutes.

The company has secured several US western state contracts to monitor about 50 million hectares for wildfires and in the 2020 California fire season, detected more than 850 fires.

“I think 65 per cent of all the fires we detect within a minute. And I think it’s 95 within five minutes and 100 per cent within 10 minutes,” Mr Tylor says.

“Our big goal is to have the system rolled out globally. We want to be the go-to place in regard to fire intelligence and that is what we will achieve. In the next five years, we will have international installations all over the planet. The challenge we have is to commercialise it and convince potential customers that it’s worth it.” myweeklypreview.com.au

TRIPLE THREAT: FIREBALL, HELITAK & MCDERMOTT “A large air tanker carries 15,000 litres of water in comparison to our smallest tank, which carries 1200 litres of water but can put more water per hour on the ground because we can refill it every three minutes. We can put more water, more accurately on the fire. Our smallest tank costs about 14 cents per litre to deliver to the fire and the largest aircraft costs about $2.14.

“We don’t want to wait until the fire goes pear-shaped. The focus of what we, Fireball and McDermott are doing is about initial detection and initial attack aircraft. The best way to hit a fire is hard and fast early, not on day three with a large air tanker.”

Helitak has five customers in Australia, including McDermott Aviation and six overseas, predominantly in the US and Canada.

“We have the most controllable fire-fighting tank on the market with the most efficient drop pattern,” he says.

“We’re still only in the early stages on the world market.”

“[This] is an absolute game-changer for detecting and fighting bushfires” supporting the innovation with a $497,500 Accelerating Commercialisation grant for Helitak, and a $500,000 Entrepreneurs’ Program grant for Fireball International.

“The technology being developed at the Peregian Digital Hub and the collaboration with Helitak and McDermott Aviation is an absolute game-changer for detecting and fighting bushfires, and it will benefit not just Australian communities, but has the potential to be used all over the globe,” Mr O’Brien says.

A State of Fire Emergency is a vital declaration that works to prevent bushfires breaking out and posing a danger to lives and property. The declaration prohibits the lighting of all types of outdoor fires and bans certain activities that can cause fires to ignite. The QFES Commissioner, with the approval of the Fire and Emergency Services Minister, can declare a State of Fire Emergency.

There is no fixed criteria for invoking the declaration, rather multiple factors are considered before formalising the declaration, including the number of active fires and fire weather conditions (drought, wind speed, relative humidity and temperature). Queensland’s recent State of Fire Emergency was issued on November 9, 2019 at 5pm, as several parts of the state were experiencing severe fire danger rating conditions.

The state of Queensland has a legislative responsibility for firefighting in Queensland. The federal government assists the state when requested by co-ordinating resource sharing arrangements and financial support.

Helitak Firefighting Equipment has been operating since 2006. The first commercial Helitak Fire Tank was exported to the US and the product was officially launched at the HIA Heli Expo in 2007. The Helitak Fire Tank was also featured on the ABC’s New Inventors show in 2009. The tank design was the winner and also collected the people’s choice award.

“What we wanted to take out of the demonstration on Wednesday was that all this technology and equipment has been developed. We design and manufacture it here on the Sunshine Coast. We’re ready to rock ‘n’ roll and have been for years.

John McDermott, managing director of McDermott Aviation, says every minute is critical when tackling bushfires.

“Our tank-fitted helicopters offer speed and manoeuvrability for an initial attack on a fire,” Mr McDermott says. “In terms of delivering maximum, continuous water and dropping it accurately onto a fire, our helicopter and tank systems shine when compared to large air tankers, which carry larger volumes but have much longer turnaround periods and less accuracy for urban interface interaction.

“The combination of the use of helicopters with the Helitak expandable bladder and the cameras that Fireball International have developed, that have been fitted to the bottom of the helicopters, ensures we nail the delivery of water every single time – ensuring time and water are not wasted when there is no time or water to waste.”

PhD research into plants and insects around Sunshine Coast’s beach dunes is identifying more ways to restore and re-vegetate the environment – without the weeds.

Brittany Elliott (pictured), a Science Honours graduate midway through her doctorate at the University of the Sunshine Coast, has spent six months surveying coastal dune plants from Peregian Beach to Kings Beach. “My results suggested that four key tree species – pandanus, banksia, coastal she-oak and beach bird’s eye – were key targets for plantings on coast dunes. We also identified important locations where the highly invasive asparagus fern and glory lily are likely to thrive.”

Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews responded to more than 100 motor vehicle incidents last calendar year – an increase of almost 10 per cent. “On average, that is two motor vehicle incidents a week which are so serious, they require an aeromedical response,” RACQ’s Brian Guthrie says. In the 12 months to January, the fleet of RACQ LifeFlight Rescue community helicopters completed 1947 missions. The top five Sunshine Coast callouts for 2020 include: 109 cardiac conditions,102 motor vehicle accidents, 44 neurological conditions, 34 falls (including bushwalking/hiking, domestic and elderly), 27 serious illnesses/infections.

Australia Zoo has gained a second Guinness World Record, this time for a rhinoceros iguana. Rhino has been named the oldest living rhino iguana in captivity, recorded at 40 years and 278 days on November 27, 2020. Terri Irwin says Rhino has lived at Australia Zoo since 1993. “We are so happy that Rhino has been granted this award and is officially a Guinness World Record holder. We love visiting him to give him his morning scratches and breakfast.”

According to Guinness World Records, the previous greatest lifespan on record for a rhino iguana was just under 23 years old. Rhino is Australia Zoo’s second resident to be awarded with a Guinness World Record, after Forest the giraffe was recorded as the world’s tallest living giraffe in July 2020. At nearly 41 years of age, Rhino enjoys basking in the sun eating bananas and hibiscus flowers.

A little seahorse was found washed up on the beach by the Kawana Surf Life Saving Club on New Year’s Eve. The seahorse was brought to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast for care and the team named her Eve. Earlier in January during the low tide, Eve was released at Mooloolaba Beach after being cared for by the animal care team who ensured she was well enough to venture back into the ocean.

The team wishes her all the best in the big blue sea.

Barry’s book launch Barry Bull has channelled his grief at losing his wife of 52 years into a new book, to be launched at Mooloolaba.

A

love of music, a girl in a million and an old guitar; these were the three pillars of life for music industry stalwart Barry Bull.

But in September 2018, it all came crashing down when he suddenly and unexpectedly lost Kayleen, his wife of 52 years.

She had spent the early afternoon of September 9 greeting guests for Mr Bull’s third annual Gift of Sound fundraising concert for Hear and Say at the Mooloolaba Surf Club. After her husband took to the stage, she suffered a stroke and passed away two days later.

“When I lost Kayleen, I also lost the passion for my guitar and my desire to play music. All three of these had been vital components in my life and I was lost for a

long time,” Mr Bull recalls. “I struggled to stay connected to the living world as the music within me began to fade.”

With memories swirling through his mind as he reflected on the countless experiences he had shared with his wife, whom he affectionately dubbed his “support act”, Mr Bull found narrative therapy helped him to make peace.

“The grief was overwhelming at first,” he says. “But I found as I began to write, I could be grateful for everything we shared together. I didn’t set out to write a book at first, but I began to realise this memoir was my dedication to Kayleen.”

With three books already under his belt, Unbreakabull is Mr Bull’s most intimate book to date and chronicles how the couple met in the 1960s just after Mr Bull began a

career in music retailing, moonlighting as a guitarist with his band The Counts. He was connected to dozens of musical greats including Neil Diamond, Billy Joel and was instrumental in launching Meatloaf’s Bat Out of Hell tour in Australia.

He was recruited by CBS Records (now Sony Music) and rose through the ranks to become national marketing chief through the ’70s. In 1981 he acquired Toombul Music and transformed it into a multiple award-winning iconic venue that attracted the likes of Sir Cliff Richard, Michael Crawford, John Denver, Olivia Newton John, The Corrs and Ronan Keating over its illustrious 25-year history.

“Kayleen stood by me through it all. She kept the home fires burning and raised our beautiful family while I was pulling all kinds of crazy hours for CBS and when we made the leap into becoming business owners, she always backed me,” Mr Bull says.

“Finding a way back to a tolerable daily routine needed a road map that didn’t seem to exist, but I started to find my way back when I dusted off my guitar and began to share my personal stories in tribute to my beautiful wife.

“My book is for all who have loved and lost and have music in their soul. I hope it offers hope and resilience to anyone who has lost a loved one.”

Mr Bull will launch Unbreakabull at the last place he was able to enjoy his wife’s “winning smile” he so adored – the function room at the Mooloolaba Surf Club.

Another chapter of history is closing at the medieval-inspired Sunshine Castle, Bli Bli, with the shock end of tours because of structural problems. Business owner Birte Benecke-Uhrig says the heartbreaking decision came after the recent discovery of major concrete cancer, which means some areas of the original 70s building are unsafe.

Sunshine Castle is one of the Coast’s longest-standing tourism attractions, built in 1972 and evolved from fairytale displays to an award-winning medieval museum and function and events centre.

“It is with extreme devastation that we are announcing that our hand has been forced in the closing of our castle tour through the original and aged buildings of the castle,” Mrs Benecke-Uhrig says.

“Increasing recent and completely irreparable maintenance issues in the entire original structure have taken these buildings to a stage where we have to put public safety first and cease operating this quintessential part of our operation.”

However the family business, which won a Sunshine Coast Business Award in 2019, will continue its toy shop, Absolut Toys, at the entrance building.

The coffee counter and bar on the Cafe Terrace will also remain open, with seating in the castle courtyard and views to the original castle.

“We are also pleased to still offer a mini tour via our courtyard with lots of armour and history shields that leads to all the kids’ favourite displays,” Mrs Benecke-Uhrig says. “Families and visitors can still explore our freshly renovated Doll Museum, our Castle Gallery, the Dancing Dolls, our Fairytale Walk and our Model Train set.

“These areas are in no way affected by issues in the older parts and have been built in a completely different way and at a different time.”

Instead of charging admission, visitors are encouraged to embrace a “pay what you wish concept” for the mini tour. Mrs Benecke-Uhrig says they had been planning exciting new projects for 2021 and hiring more staff when “we were suddenly forced to face the raw and undeniable fact that we have lost this battle”.

“Operating the castle as a tourist attraction, function venue and medieval museum over the last 20 years has been a pleasure, a passion and a labour of love,” she says.

“We are totally gutted that we can no longer facilitate this into the future. Whilst we face severe financial, emotional, staffing and housing implications ourselves, we acknowledge the shock and sadness that the community faces with us.”

Mrs Benecke-Uhrig says they appreciated the support from the community.

“We want to take this opportunity to especially thank and acknowledge our staff who we adore. They have been involved in and share the choices we have made 100 per cent – you cannot ask for a better team than that,” she says.

“Exactly how we move into the future under these circumstances is still unclear, we need a little time to process what is now possible and formulate a currently non-existent plan B.” – By Kat Donahey

Comedian Jasmine Fairbairn reckons women are just as funny as men and she’ll be visiting the Coast this week as part of the Funny Mummies Comedy Gala to prove it. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

re women funny? It’s one of the main questions comedian, playwright and actor Jasmine Fairbairn gets asked.

The question has been posed everywhere from The New York Times to Vanity Fair and even studied by science. The late Christopher Hitchens famously said it’s not necessary for women to be funny in order to be attractive to the opposite sex, but men need all the help they can get.

Ms Fairbairn disagrees. She says women are as funny as men – and just as damaged.

“Every comedian is broken inside and is filling that void of lack of parental love with strangers laughing,” she says.

“Comedy was a hundred per cent a coping mechanism from when I was young. One time I made my mum laugh and I blame her for my becoming a comedian, because I made her laugh once and it felt real nice.

“Being a female comedian is like living in any other male-dominated industry where of course there is a boys’ club, but women aren’t dismissed by other comedians anymore. I think that’s in the past.

“Although I had one instance where I stood up on stage and hadn’t even opened my mouth, when a guy stood up, went ‘nope’ and walked out,” she says.

She wasn’t hurt or offended, but she did laugh. A sense of humour, a thick skin and some emotional pain to draw on are helpful for anyone trying to make it in comedy.

“It’s terrifying, but I don’t really get nerves anymore,” she says. “The reason I chose standup was because it was the scariest version of anything I could think of doing. You learn after a long time how to make people feel comfortable. The second you look nervous, they’re nervous too. No one wants you to fail badly. They want you to fail securely. If you bomb, you have to own it – and everybody bombs. If the audience feels worried or afraid for you, that’s not funny, it’s just sad.”

Many factors can affect how well a comedian does at a gig, from the audience being too hot or too cold or the person who went first destroying the vibe. But when it works, there’s no better feeling, she says.

“There are so many factors beyond what you can control, but you learn to mitigate them as much as

humanely possible,” says Ms Fairbairn. “It’s like being a drug addict. It’s basically like heroin, chasing that first very good feeling every time.”

Originally from Canada and now based in North Lakes, Ms Fairbairn cut her teeth at the famous Loose Moose Theatre Company in Calgary, where she performed from the age of 15. Her first foray into comedy in Australia was Fiona McGary’s standup comedy course at the Sit Down Comedy Club in Brisbane.

“I didn’t expect anything to come from it except fun,” she says. “I ended up being more involved. I joined a storytelling group, wrote my play and did standup there at least three or four times a week. You can write all you want at home, but you have no idea what works unless you’re on

stage. Standup is one of the only things that’s creative that you learn on the job. You can learn to play guitar in your room until you’re good enough to go on stage. With standup you can’t; you need an audience to practise. You have to find your voice and your persona on stage.”

Ms Fairbairn is set to visit the Sunshine Coast with the Funny Mummies Comedy Gala by musical comedian Jenny Wynter. Written by mums, for mums, it puts paid to the idea that women aren’t as funny as men.

“These funny mummy gigs are the best,” she says. “The people I’m on with are my favourite and the people in the audience are my people. We’ve sold out every show we’ve done for Funny Mummies. Those audiences have been so grateful to be there, so happy to be out.”

Ms Fairbairn bemoans the lack of government support for the arts in Australia, but says there are innovative ways we can ensure they stay alive.

“We need a support system for artists,” she says. “Not the dole, but an artist support system that makes it easier for people to mentor other people so they don’t also have to work in a job to support themselves. We need systems put in place for sponsorships, not these one or two grants coming out once a year.

“I used to run a free comedy event called Knockoff at Brisbane Powerhouse. It was a sponsored event and an excellent way to get artists supported at different levels.

They got paid for five-minute spots or 10-minute spots and somebody like me got paid to produce it.

“I always thought it was really weird in Australia that the end goal for comedians was to work on a cruise ship or work in breakfast radio. I find that bananas. The people doing that are doing it for the money. You get to a certain point where you can’t handle the hustle anymore. It’s a lot. It’s too much.

But there will always be a level of open mics and people who are super-keen to get up on stage and make people laugh.”

2021 OUTLOOK FOR EQUITIES What a year 2020 was, when the world as we know it was turned on its head by COVID-19.

The pandemic, which at one stage virtually shut down the globe, triggered central bank action of a magnitude never seen before and led most governments to shake off any semblance of fiscal rectitude and unleash a torrent of government support.

These actions, in addition to the development of successful vaccines, resulted in the MSCI World Index ending the year 14 per cent higher – a very unlikely scenario when markets lurched lower in February and March. Ord Minnett and its global research counterparts see further gains for world markets in 2021.

Locally, our December 2021 target range for the S&P/ASX 200 Index has been set at 6700–7300, providing some potential upside on the 6675 points at time of writing.

A ‘market nirvana’ scenario is also expected for US equities in the first half of this year, driven by earnings recovery and multiple expansion. As a result, we expect the S&P 500 to reach 4400 by the end of 2021, which equates to a 15 per cent upside as at the time of writing.

Most of the market upside is expected to be realised in the first six months of the year, driven by continued easy monetary policy, COVID-19 vaccine distribution and corporates beginning to release excess balance sheet cash starting next year.

All this positive sentiment and extremely favourable conditions make equities seem like the smart place to be.

There is some cause for caution though.

The ASX200 Price to Earning (PE) is at a historically high level of 19.9 times. This compares with the average over recent years of 15.9 times and around 14.5 times over a longer time frame.

The US market is trading at even higher multiples of around 25 times. The high prices that the market is willing to pay for equities can be justified because of the very low interest rate environment and the amount of liquidity being pumped into economies via government support. Returns on lower-risk assets are rather grim with 12 month term deposit rates sitting at around 0.75 per cent.

This all makes equities attractive on a relative basis.

It must be remembered that with higher prices come higher risk and the potential of higher-than-usual volatility.

As always it will be important for investors to be mindful of the potential risk and reward of any investment that they intend to make. Being prudent will likely be more critical this year than most.

INTRASTATE TRAVEL BOOMS FOR SUNSHINE COAST DURING THE PANDEMIC The Sunshine Coast was successful in developing its intrastate market in response to mitigating the extent of the disruption caused by COVID-19, according to the latest National Visitor Survey (NVS), released by Tourism Research Australia last week.

The NVS covers the September 2020 quarter – from July 1 to September 30 – when for most of the quarter Queensland’s border was closed to its principal interstate markets New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

As a result, Visit Sunshine Coast launched a campaign targeting the Queensland drive market, which saw a 39.7 per cent increase in intrastate visitors for the three months, compared with the same period in 2019. A total of 837,000 intrastate visitors travelled to the region in the quarter, compared with 599,000 for the corresponding quarter in 2019.

While COVID-19 had a severe impact on overall visitor numbers for the quarter, the Sunshine Coast’s intrastate drivemarket campaigns shielded the region from a larger fall. Overall visitor numbers were down, but the Sunshine Coast recorded the lowest decrease of all Queensland regions, declining -3.7 per cent to 886,000 for the quarter.

Commenting on the figures, Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel says they highlight the devastating effect of COVID-19 on the tourism industry, but the policy of targeting the intrastate market has insulated the region from the worst.

“The second half of 2020 was dominated

by uncertainty and disruptions caused

by COVID-19,” he says. With over three million residents within a 300 kilometre radius of the Sunshine Coast, the region switched its strategy and focused on targeting this significant drive market to alleviate the declines from interstate and international sources.

“Also supporting the intrastate strategy has been the launch of our new For Real branding. This branding was developed through research that provided insights into the desire of Australian travellers to visit destinations that offer uncrowded, natural-focused attractions, and authentic characters and experiences. The NVS statistics are a great indicator to us that this new brand is right on point.

“It’s encouraging to hear that many of our Sunshine Coast operators have also enjoyed a strong summer period…

However, many operators that have been unable to pivot their businesses to cater for an intrastate market are still doing it really tough, and there is still a lot more work to be done to support these operators [to] navigate their way through COVID-19.”

As the Volunteering Sunshine Coast CEO Cheryl has assisted people who are seeking paid employment to participate in volunteer work with a view to keeping skills updated and building self-esteem through the pathways to employment program, coordinated volunteers during a disaster event and referred volunteers to not-forprofit organisations across all sectors of the community.

Carmel’s dedication to providing opportunities for people with a disability began more than 45 years ago when she adopted a son with disabilities. As he grew, Carmel felt compelled to create opportunities for him, just as her other two children had. Carmel took a leading role to develop supported training and employment programs. The organisation STEPS was born in which Carmel has been a key driver in her voluntary role as chair and president for 33 years.

Angelique is the founder and director of Loving Hope Bears.

Annually on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie, hundreds of children flee their homes with a parent as a result of domestic violence, often leaving without any possessions, including their favourite toy. For two years, Angelique investigated how she could help, and now more than 300 bears have been delivered to children in domestic violence shelters on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie.

Reef Check Australia is dedicated to protecting Australia’s reefs and oceans. RCA engage the community in hands-on citizen science and education initiatives to help volunteers take an active role in appreciating, understanding and protecting local reef resources.

RCA volunteers and partners have removed more than 3000kg of rubbish from local beaches and waterways. RCA engages with students, teachers, community groups, local businesses and individuals to share the wonders of the region’s unique reefs.

Aleesah is a highly respected member of the Australian writing community. She has published 50 books in 10 years and has won or been shortlisted for many awards. Aleesah has formed a network of children’s authors and illustrators enabling local artists to share ideas, knowledge and opportunities to lift the status and capacity of Sunshine Coast creatives. Aleesah runs child and adult writing workshops and set up Sunny Kids Writing Workshops where she’s taught hundreds of young local writers.

Steve is a trailblazer in the local mountain biking arena. Inspired by a mountain biking club on a visit to Canada, upon his return Steve began developing mountain bike trails in the Caloundra Town Reserve. As he created new trails and adventurous features, more riders found them and began to help with trail development.

Steve and a group of mountain bikers established the Caloundra Off-Road Cycling Association.

Steve runs the CORCA Kids program, learn-to-MTB days and introductory courses.

uderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway (BPHTI) remains at an impasse with Sunshine Coast Council regarding a permanent home for the historic Krauss locomotive.

The iconic train, which once serviced the needs of farmers and residents between 1914 and 1935, received a fresh coat of paint last year, after 10 years sitting semi-exposed in a shed left it looking a little worse for wear.

BPHTI president Helene Cronin says the council funded to have the train professionally restored to its original colours and now the group needs somewhere to house it.

Ms Cronin says after the paintwork was done, BPHTI was forced to spend thousands to find another temporary home to protect the new paint work.

“We’re presently at a stalemate with the council regarding the display of the Krauss in Buderim so she’s all dressed up but, unfortunately, still nowhere to go,” Ms Cronin says.

“The temporary shed that the Krauss had been in since 2004 was becoming dilapidated and it was therefore necessary for us to house her in a new shed to protect the new paint job.

“This cost $18,000 all up and it’s unfortunate that we had to spend such a large amount of publicly raised funds on what it is hoped will only be a temporary home for the Krauss.”

For many years, BPHTI campaigned to have the train incorporated into the

refurbished toilet block amenity on Lindsay Road.

Division seven councillor Ted Hungerford says in 2017 the council investigated several options to display the train in Buderim, but all exceeded the council’s $438,000 budget for the project.

“We’re … at a stalemate with the council regarding the display of the Krauss” “Council … resolved to continue to support the Buderim Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc should a suitable location be identified for the display of the Krauss Locomotive,” Cr Hungerford says.

Despite this, the tramway group continues to grow after being invited to take part in the filming of the council’s Cultural Heritage Discovery promotional video in July and the successful launch of Ms Cronin’s book Timber Trains Turmoil – A History of Buderim and its Tramway.

Ms Cronin says the number of people using the Tramway Heritage Walking Track is increasing and BPHTI is “very proud of their achievements in the preservation of this important part of Buderim’s history”.

“The full range of our services include early learning centres through to social support for teenagers, a lot of occupational

“We have a lot of groovy gadgets we provide training for. You can get glasses that have a tiny little camera and an earpiece.”

Ms Kerr says the glasses connect to a home base where a person on the other end can see through the camera and point out obstacles or dangers or read the person a menu when they are at a restaurant.

Based in Maroochydore, Guide Dogs also works regularly with children and teenagers, providing camps and social support to teach young people tips to navigating the world around them.

Ms Kerr says she has seen some amazing work come from people who have learnt to tap into their other senses, also provided through training at Guide Dogs.

“We had a fellow work with us at Guide Dogs and he was our computer hardware technician and he used to do everything by smell and touch.”

Ms Kerr says all Guide Dogs’ services are provided at no cost to clients, but with only nine per cent of the charity’s needs funded, it has to fundraise the remainder, but to do that, the charity needs volunteers.

unshine Coast weekends are set to become even cooler with a tropical-inspired pop-up bar at the Big Pineapple each weekend.

Founder and owner of locally produced Diablo Co alcoholic ginger beer, Dimitris ‘Dimi’ Limnatitis, says the venue has gained a strong following since it opened six months ago.

“We’ve now got a fantastic Bali hut and lots more room for people to come and relax over the weekend, he says.

“People just love the venue because it’s outdoors and there’s plenty of shade under the trees and we have a nice afternoon breeze as well as a cool drink to help keep everyone comfortable.”

From humble beginnings producing ginger beer in a back shed just a few years ago, Diablo Co now extends to a complete range of spirits and liquors, all produced locally at the Big Pineapple.

“Our full range will feature in our weekly cocktail menu and I know our clients really look forward to sampling what’s on offer each weekend.”

New women’s change rooms are now open at Maroochydore Rugby Union Club New change rooms at the Maroochydore Rugby Union Club are now open, marking a special milestone for sport on the Sunshine Coast.

Maroochydore Swans Rugby Union Club vice president Megan Constable says the new facilities will encourage and support even more women to be involved in rugby union.

“Women’s rugby union is growing right across the Sunshine Coast and now both home and visiting players will have facilities to use before and after games

thanks to the new change rooms.”

Swans president John Talbot says the club’s senior women’s team originally launched in 2004 with 10 players.

There are now 65 players, with dedicated female teams in the under-13, 15 and 17 girls’ divisions as well as junior girls playing alongside boys in the junior teams.

The new facility includes two change rooms with showers and toilets, a referees’ change room and an accessible unisex toilet.

IT’S TIME TO SHINE FOR THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN LADS Two self-taught musicians joined forces and found their groove in an unlikely place. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Musical duo Cam Cronk and Simo Taylor formed Little Mountain during COVID downtime, after a chance meeting at a Kings Beach cafe

A

broken wrist became the catalyst of change for a former school teacher now forging a career in the music industry.

Cam Cronk and Simo Taylor are the musical duo behind recently formed band Little Mountain, who came together almost by accident.

For Mr Cronk, his musical break came after an unfortunate bone break.

“I broke my wrist and as part of my rehab I was advised a nylon string guitar would be a great way to get dexterity back into [my] fingers and wrist,� Mr Cronk says. “So, I did it and I got taught four cords and it just went from there.�

With five years of solo gigging under his belt, the self-taught musician met Mr Taylor at a Kings Beach cafe. “Simo was a waiter at Coffee Cat, one of the cafes I was

plotting along at with my solo gigs, and he was a bit of a fan,� Mr Cronk says. “He was clapping between songs and we got chatting. He has a semi-musical past; he is also self-taught and has played in a few bands prior to this. We exchanged numbers and then we decided that in the COVID downtime, with all that spare time on our hands, we’d have a jam.�

Mr Cronk says the pair “clicked�

instantly and have since been recording music and performing locally. They released their first single, Devil’s Jaded, in October at the Caloundra Mini Festival, where they took out the 2020 Caloundra Music Festival Local Limelight Award.

They released their second single, Suitcase Memories, on January 24.

There are also plans for an alreadyrecorded EP to be released in the coming months, co-produced with Tim Hart from Aussie band Boy and Bear.

Harnessing the sounds of indie folk and melodic rock, Little Mountain’s main influences include Boy and Bear, Fleetwood Mac, Pixies, Paul Kelly and Middle Kids.

And the name? Well, both men are Little Mountain locals.

Mr Cronk admits that as two guys in their early 40s, “it was a challenge for us to get that out of our heads, but I think when it comes down to it, age is just a number, and music is music�. “It’s worked a treat that we’ve both been dads as well. We both understand that family comes first.�

As for 2021, Mr Cronk says the duo will keep “grinding along� as they continue to grow.

Ms Beecham says regular guest speakers provide various insights into the writing industry and members can have their work critiqued.

Beerwah Writers Group is also set to release a compilation of short stories later in the year. “This year we are once again publishing our collection of short stories and poetry.”

Members travel from Maleny, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Caloundra, Buderim and Brisbane and Ms Beecham says new writers are always welcome.

“If you are keen to write but not sure of where to start, please join us at the next meeting,” she says. “There’s lots to discuss … we can’t wait to see you all and hear your writings.”

The group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month with a gold coin donation upon entry to help cover the cost of morning tea.

Pre-COVID the group met at the Beerwah Library, but with social distancing numbers restricting their fortnightly meetings, the group has since been forced to convene at the pub.

The group’s Patty Beecham says thanks to the team at Celebrate Glasshouse Country, she has now secured a meeting room at The Hub on Sportsground Drive.

The group began in 2006 after a then-local couple wanted to share their writing experiences with like-minded people.

“We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing,” Ms Beecham says.

“Members usually read out their latest writings, kept to approximately 300 to 500 words. This can be prose, poetry [or] an article.

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace on Kawana Way Link Road

unshine Coast motorists and pedestrians on the Nicklin Way and Kawana Way Link Road will benefit from improved safety features within the next six months.

The upgrades will come as part of a $225 million federal investment across Queensland.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says works will include the installation of a new wide centre line treatment on Kawana Way Link Road and upgrades to the pedestrian underpass, including new safety fencing, on the Nicklin Way at Minyama.

Mr Wallace says the project must be completed by June 30 under a use-it-orlose-it initiative. This means “these projects must be delivered in the next six months. If they are not, these funds will be reallocated to another state.”

This announcement comes in addition to the $1.54 million Sunshine Coast road safety upgrades announced by Mr Wallace in December.

“Right now, the Morrison Government is supporting billions of dollars of road safety upgrades on the Bruce Highway, and on smaller roads in Conondale, Glenview, Mooloolaba, Kawana, Golden Beach,

Minyama and more all over our region. We are targeting projects which will make a real difference to road safety in our region and which we can get started immediately.

Collectively, these works will support jobs, construction businesses and economic growth across the Sunshine Coast.”

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz says road safety is a key priority for the federal government after a shocking road toll in 2020. “Queensland unfortunately saw a 26 per cent increase in road deaths in 2020, despite the falls in traffic due to the pandemic.”

Children can go undercover as junior ranger detectives to solve a mystery at Mary Cairncross

chool holidays may be ending, but Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’s Operation Botanica exhibit is set to continue until April.

Environmental education officer Dr Lisa Ryan says Operation Botanica tells the story of a significant but fragmented patch of rainforest, giving children the opportunity to go undercover as junior ranger detectives to solve a mystery.

“We want to inspire amazement at the many ways rainforest plants have adapted to survive the unique conditions of the rainforest including low light and high rainfall and humidity and raise awareness about some of the key threats

our rainforest plant species are facing.

“These stories lend themselves perfectly to an overarching narrative of a murder mystery in the rainforest, allowing us to tell the individual stories of the victims, the suspects, the detectives and the cast of other botanical characters all fighting for survival.”

The Mary Cairncross team changes the exhibits every six months.

“Each year more than 180,000 people visit Mary Cairncross and our exhibits are an opportunity to inspire a sense of wonder and amazement in nature,” Dr Ryan says.

unshine Coast wildlife expert Brian Coulter is using the extreme skills gained with Steve Irwin’s famed croc team to help save Australia’s most vulnerable species.

‘Briano’, as he is known, has gone from wrestling the most dangerous creatures in the world to coaxing nervous koalas from trees to check on their health and habitat.

Mr Coulter first met Steve Irwin in 1995 as a volunteer at what was then the Queensland Reptile Park at Beerwah, which became Australia Zoo. Mr Irwin told him he could be an apprentice but gave him a stern

warning: “If you get bitten, you’re out!”

Mr Coulter, who lives in Caloundra, says he learned so much from Mr Irwin.

He was present when Mr Irwin was tragically killed in 2006 and recalls their last month together.

Mr Coulter says it had been the team’s most exciting mission as far as catching and tagging massive crocodiles went.

“We caught 49 crocs – and they were all monsters. It was amazing.”

Mr Coulter earned a reputation as a gun wildlife spotter and catcher and was manager of the Australia Zoo Rescue unit from 2007 to 2011.

“I was at the zoo for about 16 years until November 2011,” he says.

“It was an incredible experience and I’m still using the same skills – although it’s a bit different.

“At Australia Zoo, we did quite dramatic rescues after getting calls from the public. We would rush to help koalas that were hit by cars, attacked by dogs or hurt in fires.

“What I do now is more measured, and I have to be extremely careful not to stress the animals out.”

Wildlife expert Brian Coulter “As well as the animals, there is a fair bit to assess, such as the strength of the trees, whether they have rotten or weak limbs, and whether they contain any nasty wasps or bees.

“The crucial part is reading the animal’s behaviour. Some koalas can be very stressy and there is a chance they might slip or jump when approached.”

Mr Coulter has caught thousands of koalas, taking them to veterinary clinics for health checks before returning them to the wild.

His business, Saltwater Ecology, conducts fauna surveys, assesses habitats and monitors wildlife that may be on sites earmarked for roads or development.

Mr Coulter’s recent work has been in the Moreton Bay region, where his team of three might take an entire day to capture a few koalas.

“The operations involve a lot of climbing and can be tricky,” he says.

HARMLESS TEASING IS FINE BUT DON’T GO BELOW THE BELT Ragging on the Blues supporters at Origin time, joining in chants and waves, booing a bad ref decision: in my book, all of these are a good-natured part of expressing our love of sport.

But on-field exchanges by the players themselves are another thing altogether.

Sledging – also called trash talk or chirping in other parts of the globe – has long been a part of elite sport, but that doesn’t mean it should remain. After all, ignoring concussions and expecting our elite gymnasts not to eat also used to be acceptable, too, until we knew better.

The odd thing is that studies, including one a couple of years ago out of the University of Birmingham, have repeatedly found that sledging does not affect athletic performance, with some athletes even finding that it fires them up.

On the cricket pitch between India and Australia, it has been raw and rough. We know this because we not only watch play these days, we are in and amongst it.

Australia was unable to cut the

ground out from under India in the third Test and as their hopes faded, they got down and dirty and sought to provoke the batsmen into making a petulant blunder.

It was ugly. It was mean. And it was unacceptable.

There is no place for getting cruel and nasty at work – it is unlawful – and a cricket ground is a place of work.

And to use a sport parallel, good sportsmanship means playing the ball and not the man. Australian captain Tim Paine calling Indian rival Ravichandran Ashwin names and saying he had the greater number of Indian friends is uncool.

Muttering to Ashwin as he waited at the crease for the next Australiandelivered missile that his teammates hated him is puerile. Others joining in is bullying.

Happily, the public views the Australians’ conduct as desperate and grubby. We demand more these days,

and if they must snipe, we would expect something funny, creative and playful from our nation’s top sportspeople: something more akin to teasing, which has long been found to be valuable.

In ancient Sparta, the razzing men gave each other was deemed to be the rock-solid base on which the formidable

Men were entered into dinner clubs from age 20, a system known as syssitia — and as they broke bread together nightly, they shared opinions, sang and

exchanged wisecracks, even using pointed nicknames.

Among friends and family, good-natured ribbing should be preserved, and exchanging friendly, witty teasing should be encouraged.

It builds bonds by testing and strengthening a close relationship; it gives rise to resilience and keeps egos in check.

On the sports field, we need more of that and less sledging.

My favourite lauded cricket exchange featured West Indian great Viv Richards when he was playing county cricket. He had played at and missed several deliveries, and bowler Greg Thomas said this to him: “It’s red, round and weighs about five ounces, in case you were wondering.”

Richards launched the next ball clear out of the ground, adding: “Greg, you know what it looks like. Now go and find it.”

Ashley Robinson recounts his many Homer Simpson moments with a recent one that solved a year-long mystery.

Sami Muirhead isn’t as happy as other parents to be sending her kids back to school, but this year she’ll cope a little better.

certainly have plenty of history when it comes to stumbling through life from one Homer Simpson debacle to another. You know, vacant look and “Doh” when I realise what I have done.

One of my most famous on a long list was many years ago when I came home after a rather late night as full as the last bus and crawled into bed trying not to wake up the bomb thrower on the other side, which seemed to work a treat.

Amazingly, I woke up early to go to work and being the caring person I am, left the lights off so as not to disturb the scary woman, went into the bathroom to brush my teeth in the dark, which was all fine except instead of toothpaste I used retinol? The funny thing about that was I clearly remember having to really squeeze the tube hard to get anything to come out, which still never tipped me off that something was the matter. Of course the gagging, vomiting, gargling and mad brushing of teeth with toothpaste of course did wake up old mate, who proceeded to stand beside me and tell me it was God’s way of punishing me as she laughed hysterically.

Of course, I could go on and on recounting my rich history of stupidity but more recently I discovered something that had been puzzling me for about a year. I have a favourite pair of runners and about a year ago I bought a set of what were supposed to be A Grade innersoles to go with them. In typical Homer Simpson fashion, never put two and two together

Those shoes were retired to the bench for lawn mowing duties and a new pair were purchased at considerable expense.

Just last week I decided to take the inner soles out of my mowing shoes and wash them. It was then I realised the shiny yellow surface was actually supposed to be face down and the dimpled part with the traction was actually the top. They were in upside down.

orld order is being returned slowly to the world. I do not refer to President Biden taking control of the White House, but of school returning for another year.

There are two camps when it comes to kids heading back to the hallways. There are the mums and dads who cannot wait for school to start. They slow the car a little and tell their kids to tuck and roll as they push their offspring out the door and hurl them back firmly into the care of the teacher as they floor it to the nearest cafe.

Then there is the helicopter and overly clingy parent. That is me. I have even been labelled a drone because of my smothering mothering. I enjoy the holidays and we have had a great time wearing not much, eating too much and not getting out of the house enough.

But I must admit for the first time ever, this year has been a little easier to send my kids back to school. Perhaps time is healing my heart of not having my little best mates with me all day long or perhaps last year showed me tiny glimpses of some lovely lights at the end

of tunnels such as coffee with the girls.

I am yet to commit the ultimate daytime sin of watching Netflix in bed and sharing a container of ice-cream with my dogs. My friend once confided to me that she does this exact thing on Monday of every week. I always find it shocking and yet intoxicating. The clever soul doesn’t even tell her husband about her sinfully delicious Monday ritual but instead heads straight home after drop off and switches on Netflix and doesn’t feel one bit bad as she spends most of the day watching Bridgerton or The Crown.

That is on my to-do-list one day and then I will have truly broken the shackles of guilt-free parenting. For now, it is enough to not miss them with all my heart and soul when I know school is good for them. And good for me.

I still feel compelled to do housework or cook dinner while they are at school, but I think it could be the year I am seduced into gulping gelato in between the sheets. Ice-cream is a gateway drug and it is a slippery slope to binge watching our brains away. Wish me luck on my pathway to sin.

TEACHER’S TIPS FOR STARTING PREP It’s a common question: what should my child be able to do when they start Prep?

Most would agree the ideal learner is one who loves learning, who collaborates with others and actively seeks to gain independent skills and knowledge.

So how do we get them there?

Education is about valuing all the stages of development and recognising there is no end to being a learner; it’s not a race and there are a multitude of paths that children will create and take on their own. It is mindset as much as skillset and setting your child up for success requires bucket loads of positive encouragement.

At Sunshine Coast Grammar School, our Prep team values each child, the character strengths they have, along with recognising the journey that they have already begun. The following are areas of child development and learning to be considered before entering Prep.

• Oral language. We love our learners to engage in regular conversations to develop the skills to converse and foster their speech and language development.

We recommend students who display speech difficulties be assessed by a speech pathologist as early as possible.

• Gross motor skills. We value students having time to actively develop their bodies, which plays an important role

in developing sustained concentration, motor planning, co-ordination and positive learning dispositions.

• Fine motor skills. We create opportunities for learners to participate in a variety of fine motor skill development – such as threading, LEGO, drawing, playdough and cutting. Although some young learners have a willingness to write, it is not an expectation when entering Prep.

• Literacy. Children need endless opportunities to be exposed to great literature and to enjoy hearing and playing with language and vocabulary.

Being able to say, enjoy and recite familiar nursery rhymes is highly valued.

• Alphabet knowledge. We would expect most learners can recognise their own name and identify the letters in their name. Children are more likely to engage

in letters and sounds that have meaning to them. The letters in Mum, Dad and sibling’s names are commonly acquired.

• Love of Learning. We believe our learners should bounce through the door each day. To develop a life-long love of learning, it is important children are nurtured to have a growth mindset.

Mistakes are okay, attempts are valued, and you need courage to try new things.

Parents and early childhood educators can have a significant impact on nurturing a growth mindset in children.

• Personal and social development. We view students as capable and allow children to grow in independence where they are skilled to do so. Opening containers, managing lunch items and personal belongings, basic personal hygiene and independent use of the bathroom is expected.

• Curiosity and thinking. At Grammar, we nurture the learning assets of inquiry.

We support our students to be selfmanagers, thinkers, collaborators, researchers and communicators. We value the natural curiosity in children and encourage questioning.

The Sunshine Coast’s blind and low vision community has been encouraged to make the most of how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can help them access life-changing services.

Vision Australia provides a wide range of specialist supports, allowing people who are blind or have low vision from across the Sunshine Coast to be active and independent members of the community.

Bec Murrell, Vision Australia regional client services manager, says her team is committed to helping people who are blind or have low vision achieve their goals.

“Our aim is support people from the blind or low vision community to live the life they choose and our clients are always at the centre of what we do,” she says.

“When somebody comes to Vision

Australia they identify goals they want to achieve, whether it’s staying safe in their home, finding or maintaining employment, being active in the community or anything else. From there our frontline staff work with the client to develop and implement the strategies needed for them to achieve their goals.”

Services available to people across the Sunshine Coast from Vision Australia include occupational therapy, orientation and mobility support, assistive technology advice, employment support, physiotherapy, speech pathology and specialist paediatric services. People can also be connected through to complimentary services such as Seeing Eye Dogs and the Vision Australia Library.

Vision Australia can also support people to navigate and access the NDIS. “The NDIS gives people more choice and control over the services they receive, but it can be challenging for people to understand how they can make the most of what it has to offer,” Bec said.

“We’ve got expert staff that can help people through the entire NDIS process, from the application and planning stage through to people utilising their funding to access our services and products.”

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY A WINNER FOR INVESTORS Property investors have stopped looking and started buying, and why wouldn’ they, says real estate expert Jason Dwyer. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

I

f the banks have it right that the South-East Queensland residential market will have double-digit growth in the next 18 months to two years, now is a great time to invest.

“It’s about right because of the demand,” Dwyer Property Investments managing director Jason Dwyer (pictured inset) says. “Prices are going up.

“Every time you try to buy a block of land from somewhere, all the developers are putting their prices up.”

Smart investors are already in the game.

Up until late last year Mr Dwyer was seeing strong investor growth from Brisbane and local buyers. Since October there hasn’t been an interstate investment wave as such but more a subtle uptick since October of 10 per cent from the same time last year as those investors convert from fishing around the market to buying into it.

“October, November and December were my busiest months ever,” Mr Dwyer says.

Almost 15 per cent of the sales in that period were to mostly Sydney residents. “I

think because it is affordable,” he adds.

“Most people’s borrowing capacity is around the $500,000 to $600,000 mark.”

You aren’t likely to get very much for that amount if buying into Sydney.

When eagerly looking to make equity or savings deliver a valuable income, realising your money in the bank is earning almost zero, and with a rental return of around five per cent gross and

the Coast’s rental vacancy the lowest it has ever been, turning to residential investment is a viable choice.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ recent report on the October seasonally adjusted new investor loan commitments showed $5.29 billion, up 0.3 per cent from the previous month and 2.8 per cent from the previous year.

Investment isn’t just for retirees, says

Mr Dwyer. He is seeing two particular investment groups buying in to the residential property.

There is the over-50s with some home equity and retirement plans on the table making up about 70 per cent of the buyers.

The other dominant group is the late-30s with increased savings due to the COVID lockdowns, some disposable income and the ability to borrow.

The hottest deal in the current market for investors, he says, are terrace or townhouse-like houses with good-sized internal areas, but with less outside areas that require maintenance. Instead, his company are building near community areas including gardens.

“They are good for investors simply for their return on investment and because of depreciation and rental return,” Mr Dwyer adds.

LIAM IS BACK IN THE SWIM “Liam was ready (early last year). He put a really good block of training in and was swimming very fast, doing stuff he’d never done before,” he says.

“He was very committed and really built himself up and then that disappointment was sort of hard to take and he lost his routine. It was like we went back a few years unfortunately.

“But he’s a swimmer, he just needs to swim.”

The national squad training camp on the Sunshine Coast in January proved to be a turning point.

“That helped him a lot,” Sage says.

“It’s sort of got him back where he wants to be.

“Once he did that camp, he seemed a lot more motivated and clearer about his shot at the Paralympics.”

Sage says Schluter still has “work to do” but he’s confident his charge can be a contender at national selection trials and at the Games. “That’s 100 per cent, as long as he stays injury free and healthy.” – Steele Taylor

awana Waters Swimming Club coach Michael Sage believes Paralympic hopeful Liam Schluter (pictured) benefited significantly from a recent national training camp, after “going backwards” in 2020.

The 22-year-old is expected to be a serious contender at Australian selection trials and the Tokyo Paralympics, despite struggling last year. Sage says the S14 talent, who broke the 200m freestyle world record in 2019, battled without routine in 2020, when restrictions forced swimmers out of their comfort zone.

“COVID (lockdown) wasn’t great for Liam unfortunately,” Sage says.

“It’s been a tough time for him, to try and get back into routine.”

Sage says Schluter, who has an intellectual disability, suffered especially when there were limits on pool access and the Games were postponed from 2020 to 2021.

Mixed emotions punctuated 2020 for Binnian Hunt, but making her debut for Sunshine Coast Lightning is the pinnacle memory that stands out from an uncertain year.

The training partner benefited from an invaluable developmental opportunity, being named in Lightning’s extended 2020 squad for the majority of the season, capped off by the Suncorp Super Netball debut.

“COVID at first was a difficult time for me. I wasn’t able to see one of my brothers until November this year, due to him being a part of the NRL bubble,” Hunt says.

“That was tough because my family and I are so close.

“At the same time, COVID was a blessing in disguise, because I was able to live my dream of being a professional netball player and making my debut.

“Being a squad member opened the opportunity for game time, so for me, it was learning how I can be that impact player and provide what my team needed at that time. I loved it.”

Hunt remained composed in the goal circle, despite the higher standard, and will no doubt take that experience into 2021, having re-signed with Lightning for another year.

The upcoming season marks Hunt’s fourth with the club and the shooter credits Lightning for her maturation both as a player and a person.

“It’s always an honour to be a part of the Lightning environment,” she says.

“It’s something that is very special to me due to the bond that I’ve created with the girls and the club.

“I feel like being with the team for my fourth year, I’ve been able to learn but also see where I can take myself and my game moving forward.

“I feel like I’ve matured as a player and as a woman while I’ve been in this environment and Lightning have been at the forefront of supporting that growth.”

Hunt has become an integral member of the wider squad in her time at the Club and has cultivated close relationships within the team. – Sunshine Coast Lightning
