ECONOMIC OUTLOOK AS JOBKEEPER ENDS Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is confident the economy will recover well in 2021.

J

osh Frydenberg is confident the economy will continue to strengthen and that the unemployment rate will fall further, even when temporary support measures like the JobKeeper wage subsidy end in March.

The treasurer jumped on recent figures showing households and businesses have amassed more than $200 billion in savings during the pandemic.

“I’m confident that people will spend that money across the economy and help generate economic activity,” Mr Frydenberg told reporters in the Victorian town of Torquay last week.

He said past experience shows when people have become cautious with their savings in previous economic downturns “that money does get spent”.

But shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers said there are no guarantees that will happen.

“A reason that we’ve got these higher savings is because there’s been so much uncertainty in the economy. That uncertainty hasn’t disappeared entirely,” Dr Chalmers told ABC radio.

“So we shouldn’t have a treasurer congratulating himself while there’s all

these people unemployed and underemployed and wages are still stagnant. There are still people struggling in the economy.”

Mr Frydenberg did concede that some businesses could go under this year, having deferred their insolvency during the recession under measures introduced by the government.

“But overall, the economy will continue to strengthen, even when those temporary emergency measures come

off,” he said.

The tourism industry in particular is urging the treasurer to extend the JobKeeper program for a sector that has suffered the impact of both domestic and international borders closures more than most.

But Mr Frydenberg appears intent to end JobKeeper at the end of March as planned and said the government has no plans to change its parameters for individual industries.

“Even when JobKeeper comes off at the end of March, the unemployment rate will start to come down,” he said.

Figures released this week back this expectation with job vacancies having grown by a further 23 per cent in the November quarter and now surpassing the pre-COVID levels seen in February.

“With Australia’s participation rate at its equal highest on record and with vacancy levels above pre-COVID levels, the risk is that unemployment falls more sharply than currently forecast by the RBA and Treasury,” National Australia Bank economist Tapas Strickland said.

“This would be good news for the economy and would suggest the budget deficit could improve more quickly than expected.”

The unemployment rate was 6.8 per cent in November after hitting a 22-year high of 7.5 per cent in June.

It now sits just below the OECD average of 6.9 per cent.

In last month’s mid-year budget review, Treasury forecast the jobless rate falling further to 6.25 per cent in the next financial year and to 5.75 per cent in 2022/23. –AAP

YOUNG BLOOD GETS BUSINESS SAVVY The Sunshine Coast’s first Youth Chamber of Commerce is inviting all local business people under 35 to join the organisation for moral support, mentoring and networking events targeted at a younger demographic. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

T

he Sunshine Coast’s only Youth Chamber of Commerce is full of optimism as it heads into its second year.

With the Sunshine Coast attracting more and more young business professionals, Mooloolaba-based residential sales consultant Jordan Barden saw the need for a united body to support under 35s.

About three years ago, Mr Barden established Young Professionals Sunshine Coast and out of that evolved the Sunshine Coast Young Chamber of Commerce, a group of young, driven, professionals.

“I founded the Young Professionals Sunshine Coast because I felt [there] was a real lack of opportunity for young like-minded individuals to catch up and chat about their business, plus any challenges they may be facing,” he says. “It was a bit of an informal networking group.”

The group continued to attract interest and its membership increased to 20.

Mr Barden admits at that point they “hit a bit of a ceiling” with the group and needed to look at other avenues.

“We got too big for how informal we were, so needed to do something to make it more formal.”

Along with the help of successful businesswomen Bronte Cresswell and Katie Wass and the Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce, they launched the first youth chamber on the Sunshine Coast.

Now one of four executive members, Mr Barden says the SCYCC is an amazing opportunity to help like-minded young professionals achieve their goals, helping each other with challenges along the way.

“I play a big role in helping educate the SCYCC through organising guest speakers every second month of the year to tell their story on where they started and how they have built a successful brand and/or business,” he says.

With a strong culture developing on the

drive and allow for an environment where members can gain further insight and understanding, while having access to a trusted group of fellow professionals for support, collaboration and referrals.

“The younger generation of professionals are not only complementing the current local business environment, but taking their own unique approach and having real influence in their industries.

“Our purpose and goal is to nurture this

missing from traditional chamber groups.

“We’re bringing the fun back into networking,” he says.

“I think the biggest complaint for young people with [traditional] chambers is there is a bit of an older vibe there and they can’t relate to everyone.”

He says the SCYCC mixes professional workshops with networking and events.

“At the end of the day, we just wanted to create a really cool space where we

could all have a bit of fun in a like-minded community.

“We’re flat out with our own businesses and trying to further our business and help the Sunshine Coast, but at the end of the day we are keen for a beer and to have a bit of fun.”

The youth chamber includes under 35s in the real estate and insurance sectors, graphic design and social media marketing, plus home building and pool companies, cafes and small businesses.

“It’s one way for people to get their brand out there,” Mr Barden says.

“We all plug each other as well, so we are always shouting each other out, constantly getting each other’s brands out there, supporting each other to help everyone grow.

“We make sure we make the effort to visit those who own businesses and restaurants too.”

SCYCC is aligned with the Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce, something Mr Barden says establishes credibility and offers valuable insights to members.

“They have given a bit of a platform to launch the young chamber, but we are 100 per cent our own young chamber and anyone from the Coast can join us.”

With nothing set in stone for 2021, Mr Barden says the chamber is hoping to hold a few charity events and grow its membership, which currently sits at myweeklypreview.com.au

W

hen Cate Milton’s business hit hard times, she came up for air and signed up with the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance mentoring program. Since then, with a diverse range of business strategies in place, these days her head is well above water.

Ms Milton bought the Fudge Cottage in 2005. The business made and sold the fudge in its own shop, located in the strip of shops connected to Aussie World on the Highway, near Caloundra.

At the time of buying the business, Ms Milton says she felt secure about the purchase for a few reasons, including the fact that this was her second foray into business and the previous owner had successfully operated the business for 10 years.

“However, during 2018 a number of changes were occurring that were adversely impacting my business,” Ms Milton says.

“The revenue was under pressure and the profitability was on a downhill slide.”

Ms Milton says her first meeting with Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance mentors Barry O’Rourke and Steven Haites involved explaining her problem and concluded with advice from the mentors to manage costs of operation and to find new channels to market and/or relocate.

“I managed to take a range of steps to reduce my overheads,” she says.

“But relocation, because the shop was both a place of production and a retail outlet, was problematic.”

Ms Milton says she had started a redevelopment of design and package production that was more suited to the presentation and shipping of the fudge.

With that in mind and at the suggestion

Cate Milton (centre) ready to make fudge with her staff of her mentors, Ms Milton successfully developed a wholesale channel where the product would sell through other retail outlets. Additionally, she completed a course to enable her to set up online selling.

Over a period of a year, Mr O’Rourke and Mr Haites met with Ms Milton on a regular basis. When appropriate, they included other mentors with various expertise to assist the business.

“The process of articulating my challenges, having mentors with significant business experience question and recommend ideas gave me substantial confidence,” she says.

Importantly, Ms Milton always says she felt completely in control of the decision-making process in her business.

Looking back now she says, “There is a good chance that without their advice my business would have failed, whereas now I have an expanded, more

resilient and profitable business.

FINDING WORK AS A VETERAN A new program specifically for returned young veterans is putting job-seekers back into the workforce.

A

s we begin the new year, Australia is starting to see the return of some economic strength and much-needed jobs. However, with the widespread unemployment that raged last year, many support systems have become overworked and hard to access. Even with increasing jobs, it is still difficult to know exactly how you can fit in.

Specific support for one of these vulnerable groups can be found in the new STEPS initiative, the Young Veterans Support Program. Veterans can access a range of support for reintegrating into society and finding employment that suits their skills, needs and desires.

The program has already seen immense success in helping young veterans, after starting late last year to meet a gap in the market.

One such success story is Aaron Fayers (pictured), a young veteran from the Sunshine Coast area, who credits his workplace success to the program and assistance from its employment specialist, Tadd Marturano.

“Having served in the Australian Defence Force, then changed over to a

FIFO job post-Defence life, I did not think I’d have a problem ever finding work,” Mr Fayers says.

“About two and a half months had passed and despite applying for many jobs on employment websites, I was having no luck.”

Mr Marturano, who served five years

with the Australian Defence Force, is uniquely aware of the difficulty that veterans can face in finding suitable employment and utilises his experience to fuel the program’s success.

“Veterans discharge from service with an exemplary skillset that can make a huge positive impact in any workplace; resilience, determination, discipline, and leadership are commonplace strengths within our veteran community,” Mr Marturano says.

“However, working in Defence is no ordinary job and it is sometimes difficult to know how to transfer your skills to make yourself desirable in the civilian workplace.”

Mr Fayers had the Young Veterans Support Program recommended by the President of Young Veterans Sunshine Coast, Peter Kennedy, who is a friend of Mr Fayers. “Tadd was unbelievably responsive straight from the word go; he arranged for a meeting immediately that day,” Mr Fayers says.

“Tadd reviewed my CV and skills sets, helped me to even neaten up my cover letter to be more competitive, and in that meeting was able to get an understanding

of my background and my desired direction of work.

“Within two days, I was being contacted and short-listed for jobs on the Sunshine Coast from companies with a need for workers, and specifically ex-Defence members, due to the training and disciplined received when I enlisted.”

Mr Fayers has now secured a full-time role on the Sunshine Coast and looks forward to seeing what 2021 will bring for him.

Having the support of the STEPS Veterans program to return to work has been a massive help; I highly recommend Tadd and the program to any veteran transitioning or struggling to find employment up here on the coast,” Mr Fayers concluded.

“I can’t thank Tadd enough for his passion and commitment to ensuring his clients are looked after and in good hands.”

2021 OPEN STUDIOS IS CALLING ALL ARTISTS TO JOIN IN THE FUN

unshine Coast artists are being invited to register their interest in the 2021 Open Studios program. The popular week-long event scheduled for March 20–28 is designed to showcase established and emerging local artists in their working environment.

Art lovers and collectors keen to gain a glimpse behind the scenes, and to purchase directly from the makers, recognise the event as one of their favourite immersive art experiences in the calendar.

Event coordinator Toni Eggleston says the 2021 event will be bigger than ever, with the trail extending from its previous home of the hinterland to include the whole Sunshine Coast region from Caloundra to Coolum.

“The fact that you get to actually see where and how the art is being made, and to meet the artists is a huge drawcard for visitors. We expect to see the profile and popularity of the event increase in the coming years,” says Ms Eggleston.

MURAL UNVEILED AT BOKARINA BEACH A 180 metre-long vibrant art mural has been unveiled at Bokarina Beach. A collaboration between three Sunshine Coast artists – Alison Mooney, David Houghton and Xato Stencil – the colourful public artwork draws inspiration from nearby flora and fauna and the community’s coastal lifestyle. Each artist has blended their unique style into the one-of-a-kind community masterpiece. Housed at the Bok Beach Cafe on Longboard Parade, the artistic creation is a first for Stockland’s masterplanned community for its residents to enjoy.

The new artwork is located in the heart of the beachfront community, opposite the recently opened Bokarina Beach Village Park. It is set to become the Coast’s newest selfie spot and a favourite photoshoot location.

DRONES DETECT FEW SHARKS SharkSmart drones were introduced across South East Queensland about three months ago, via the State Government and with the support of Surf Life Saving Queensland. Sunshine Coast lifeguards have been remotely piloting the machines at Alexandra Headland and Coolum Beach.Their primary use is to monitor the water, detect sharks and gather data on shark movements and behaviour. If a dangerous shark is spotted, lifesavers and lifeguards will warn water users.

Lifeguards say the “eyes in the sky” show that unlike the Gold Coast or Stradbroke Island, our waters have been “relatively shark-free”.

A record number of people have received offers to begin degrees at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in semester one this year, with interest in studying at the university surging.

The mid-January round of offers was released last week by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), bringing to 5622 the number of university hopefuls who have so far received offers to study at USC. This is up 17.8 per cent on last year, which was affected by a smaller-than-usual cohort of school leavers, but also up 21 per cent on two years ago. Offers to date include 2296 to applicants from the Sunshine Coast (including Noosa Shire).

A TOUGH KID WITH AN EVEN TOUGHER MUM This brave Caloundra boy is embarking on a new adventure thanks to his fighting spirit and extraordinary mum. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

T

he first day of school is a significant milestone for all children, but for some, it’s extra special. Five-year-old Noah Tarabori is a triplet who was born at 28 weeks with life-threatening health problems and spent 263 days on life support at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital in Florida, USA. Described by his mother as a little rockstar, Noah has fought every day of his short life to arrive at the day when he will front up to Prep, still fed by a PEG tube, to start school on January 27.

Eileen Tarabori is a single mother to her four children, Domenica, eight, and the

triplets, Noah, Kai and Aris. Originally from Sydney, she spent 15 years living in the US before Noah’s health challenges necessitated a move back to Australia to pursue the best medical care possible. A year ago, they began their new life on the Sunshine Coast, moving here for the great weather and easygoing lifestyle.

When the children begin school, Ms Tarabori plans to go back to university and study social work and occupational therapy, but it won’t be the first time she has undertaken a new career challenge.

After gaining bachelor degrees in social science and early childhood education, she

left Australia to teach English and social science around the world, eventually taking on a job as principal of a school in Phoenix, Arizona. When she felt she needed a break from that, she joined the US military.

Incredibly, Ms Tarabori served over a decade in the US Army as a paratrooper with the All American 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and support with the Seventh Special Forces Group out of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

“I was in combat a total of four times in the Middle East and South America,” she says. “We were attached to the Colombian and Mexican special forces. We would do airborne missions, rescuing people from disasters, rescuing people who had been kidnapped or taken hostage.”

After serving from 2006 to 2016, Ms Tarabori was discharged due to PTSD, traumatic brain injury and injuries suffered during a parachute malfunction while training for her fourth deployment.

“I have a strictly military-type PTSD,” she says. “You get flashbacks from being deployed and doing certain things that are not normal. We’re not raised in a hostile environment, so when you’re put in one for such a long period of time, for 12 months or more, you see things and do things you’re not raised to see and do.

“There’s a lot of conflict in your mind about doing the right thing. Taking a person’s life is not normal. When you’re in the military and in a combat zone, that’s your job and you have to be okay with that.

You see a lot of gun violence and bombs.

You see death, you see your fellow members in situations you don’t want them to be seen in. You’re shooting at people, they’re shooting back at you, you have to fight for your life. It’s a life and death situation for such a long period of time that

when you come back, you’re struggling ethically, morally and mentally with what you’ve seen and done. You think about what you could have done, what you should have done. You’re in a constant battle with your brain – the noises, screams, smells, they all bring on the flashbacks.

Gunfire sounds similar to cars backfiring or firecrackers going off, so you feel anxiety, your heart rate goes up and you think, am I okay? It doesn’t go away; it stays with you for a very long time.”

Ms Tarabori describes the training she went through as intense, saying only 50 women compared with 500 men made it into the special forces while she was there.

“To be in the special forces, you have to be one of the most elite soldiers there is.

We train all day, every day for hours upon hours. We get up at 4am. At 4.30am you’re up in formation, you’re doing your PT

You have to have a strong mind and a lot of endurance. There is no male and female; you’re one. You have to be equal to the men, carry the same load and jump out of the plane at the same time.”

Ms Tarabori was stationed in Florida when she had her first child in 2013 through a sperm donor from Guyana.

Having had fertility problems, she’d frozen her eggs when she joined the military with the aim of pursuing IVF at a later date.

When the triplets were born in 2015 (from the same donor), she was in line to be medically discharged from the military and

PROFILE says she knew as soon as Noah was born, weighing only 820 grams, she’d return to Australia.

“Aside from extreme prematurity, Noah was born with numerous congenital conditions, including oesophageal atresia (being born with his oesophagus not connected to his stomach), chylous ascites (fat in the peritoneal cavity), brain bleeds, bronchi pulmonary dysplasia, cerebral palsy and craniosynostosis (early closing of his skull sutures) and VACTER syndrome.

He is also PEG fed.

“During his stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, he had countless surgeries, including a feeding tube at four days old, a craniotomy, oesophageal repair, two hernia repairs and ascites fluid drains,” says Ms Tarabori. “He needed to be revived with CPR-chest compressions three times and has been fighting for his life from day one.

“He has been astounding throughout the entire courageous fight and his amazing recovery. After the oesophageal repair in January 2016, Noah fell into a coma and cardiac arrest and was placed on life support. His right lung collapsed and two chest tubes were placed to drain blood and fluid.”

Ms Tarabori says Noah’s recovery is thanks to countless hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy, which is

what has motivated her desire to study in this field at a tertiary level.

“Noah is even finally starting to take on soft food and on January 27, he will embark on his biggest achievement to date – starting Prep at Golden Beach State School,” she says. “This is a day which was always a goal and highly anticipated. I’m so proud of this little guy. He’s my hero and inspiration. Although there are many more hurdles to overcome, the heartfelt support from this community has been embracing, to say the least.

“We have been welcomed and supported by the staff at Talara Early Childhood Development Program, Bush and Beach Kindy, Beyond Words therapy and now Golden Beach State School in giving Noah the best academic start possible.

“I will have to go in to school and feed him via his tube once a day. Up until two weeks ago, we weren’t even sure he was able to go to school. All four kids are getting a bit nervous about starting school, but once they settle in, they’ll be fine. They’re very resilient.

“Noah has definitely helped me along my own personal journey with PTSD and he has been my rock in recovery. I am so proud to be the carer and mum of this amazing boy who fought against impossible odds to be with us today.”

Council hosts citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs, with around 500 Sunshine Coast residents becoming Australian citizens every year.

A citizenship ceremony is the final official step in the journey to becoming an Australian citizen. These ceremonies also help to showcase the breadth of cultural diversity in our region.

A BRAND NEW BRAND Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year, as what a year it was.

For me, 2021 is a new beginning and I am thrilled to have joined Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) last week.

After almost five years living in Fiji, I can now proudly call myself a Queenslander and have quickly embraced the warm welcoming nature of the Sunshine Coast. I can already see that this is a cornerstone of why people love to holiday here and what keeps them coming back. What also stands out to me is the huge potential of the destination. With the newly upgraded airport, plans for new hotels and attractions, and its well-earned reputation for authentic nature-based

experiences, there are massive opportunities for the Sunshine Coast to be a pace-setter in Australian tourism.

While there is still so much uncertainty about what lies ahead for 2021, one thing for sure is that our immediate focus will remain on navigating our way through COVID-19.

As we have seen, the landscape around it remains uncertain, and as an industry we continue to need to be flexible and adapt to these changes that are all beyond our control. With that in mind, the launch of our new brand – For real – could not have come at a better time, as it differentiates our region and highlights our natural attractions. Importantly we know

from research that this is increasingly what travellers are seeking. Therefore, a focus for this year will be on continuing to activate this new brand through showcasing our incredible depth and breadth of experiences and our stunning natural landscapes that are so highly sought after by our target markets.

I look forward to working closely with our members, tourism associations, as well as our council, state and federal partners, to ensure that we can maximise the benefits of the tourism industry for the Sunshine Coast community.

As the rest of the world, much plunged into mid-winter and strict lockdowns, rolls out the shots, we bask in sunshine and all things beautiful and accessible – parks,

beaches, shopping precincts, restaurants and kiosks, movie theatres (The Dry is a great homegrown movie!).

We consider ourselves fortunate on the Sunny Coast, but we can’t become too complacent. We’ve had an influx of visitors throughout the school holidays (as I type, Brisbane is in the middle of a three-day lockdown, Maleny is on urgent alert – a COVID-19 testing clinic is now an added feature of our beautiful Blackall Range).

Let’s make it part of our daily mantra: keep maintaining social distance, sanitise and stay healthy!

SIMILARITIES TO WHERE? It seems this council is very pro. Development and the roads cannot keep up with the amount of traffic. The only solution they have is whack in another set of traffic lights, which again slows everyone down.

Every unit going up here is at least another two cars on the road. Gold Coast in nappies.

With the holidays in full swing, the Sunshine Coast is a very busy place right now. Our shopping centres are especially so as both the rainy and hot weather send people looking for shelter and something to do.

Unfortunately, there are a few who disregard the laws about parking. Spaces for those with disability permits are seen as fair game by a few selfish, ignorant drivers.

People with permits often struggle to get around – sometimes that last 50 or so metres back to the car seem like a bridge too far.

However, they are reluctant to give up the independence of shopping for themselves and why should they?

Those fit, inconsiderate drivers who take up precious disability spots should be ashamed.

You know who you are. Please be more thoughtful next time.

Instead of introducing marking meters, the council should introduce a tax for inconsiderate people, according to Ashley Robinson.

he council is always being accused of something, particularly revenue raising, with the suggestion of reintroducing parking meters to key areas, mass transit lanes and all sorts of things that a great deal of our very settled residents do not want a bar of. I guess population explosion and transport are two very big issues, along with trying to balance the budget.

I may have an idea for revenue raising and I think it would be a booming business if the council introduced an inconsiderate tax. Lycra-clad cyclists riding three abreast discussing the fabric of their outfits would be a good place to start.

Unfortunately, they can only get pinched on council walkways but there will still be many qualifiers. Simpler victims in the new tax would be those people who walk two or three abreast on walking tracks, making the rest of us get out of their way.

I think my new team will concentrate on walkways, parks and parking. There are plenty of unsuspecting victims out there to fill the coffers of the council. For instance, there should be a massive tax on those inconsiderate souls who can’t clean the

barbecue in the park after they have used them. You know the type, they use the free gas, they plug stuff into the free electricity and leave the cooktop like the last person to use it was Hannibal Lecter. Then there is the rubbish around the picnic areas. Forget about persecuting dog owners, I find morons who leave rubbish everywhere far more obscene than someone having a latte at a cafe with their dog. In fact, as long as the dog isn’t humping my leg while I’m having a bite to eat, I don’t have a problem.

The largest fine in the inconsiderate tax portfolio should be saved for those wonderful people who park in handicapped zones with the excuse they will be only there for a couple of minutes?

Sure, I have been known to park in the baby zone parks occasionally, before I learnt that looking like you are having a baby doesn’t qualify you. But really, anyone who parks in a handicapped zone with their only qualification being stupidity should be hit with the biggest fine of all.

So dear Mr Mayor, if you concentrate on this new tax, I believe the roads on the coast will be paved with gold in no time at all.

iven the global pandemic, more than ever we have reason to be thankful and proud of our beautiful country. Our history does have stains, but I love our country and you will find us eating lamingtons and meat pies in our togs this Australia Day. I always tell my kids we live in the best country in the world and I am pretty sure this phrase often falls on deaf but tanned little ears usually submerged in waves or covered in sand.

I had my ‘thankful to live in Australia’ moment early when our family had a blissful week in the Whitsundays. The highlight was a trip to Whitehaven Beach.

We played cricket in silky sand and ate sausages in bread and drank ice-cold beer and chilled cans of Kirk’s Pasito.

We were surrounded by turquoise clear water filled with the world’s deadliest creatures including Irukandji jellyfish. I quite like our list of deadly and exotic animals. They provide shock and awe tales for us all. And the sand. So white.

Whitehaven really is a white haven.

things up with the name game?

In Queensland alone we have Bootie Island, Bushy Island and Booby Island. In Tasmania you will find Lovely Bottom, Prickly Bottom, and Ding Dong Rainforest.

And what a bunch of knobs we have in this fine country. I could make a politician joke here, but that would be far too easy pickings. There is of course Bald Knob here on the Coast, and Peculiar Knob and Prominent Knob are in South Australia.

The knob list is endless in Australia, with Red Knob and Scrubby Knob found in Queensland. Our state is also home to Naughty Girl Creek and Saucebottle Swamp. New South Wales is home to Mount Great Groaner and Flirtation Hill.

So back to Whitehaven. There were a lot of young tourists wearing skimpy G-strings, but I played by the rules and wore a full-body lycra stinger suit complete with hood to protect myself against the Irukandji jellyfish. I was channelling Matt Damon and James Bond until a stranger came up to me and said “You look just like a Telly Tubby.” I would like that stranger to buy a one-way ticket to Stinkhole or Pisspot Creek, which are both in Tasmania.

NO SHAME IN TITLES What we call each other matters. The names and words we use to acknowledge others for who they are and what they do indicate respect for a person and their characteristics.

So getting rid of pronouns and titles

feels like a step too far. They reduce us all to a shapeless blob and surely, there is room for all of us and our differences.

Titles might be old fashioned, but there is a place for them in official circumstances.

They are part of our civility and our identity.

Titles and honorifics remind us that politicians are charged with being honourable that police have legal authority, and chairs have been commissioned to control meetings and boards.

US First Lady Dr Jill Biden – who plans to continue working when her husband takes up the presidency, as is her right –

copped it recently via a haughty opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal for not being a ‘real’ doctor. It urged her to drop the honorific and lean into simply being the Prez’s missus when she moves into the White House.

The advice lacked respect for a well credentialed woman and her work in education, never mind that doctorates are always hard earned.

I know, as I have a PhD and have also had its integrity questioned on occasion.

Interestingly, to paraphrase Theodore Roosevelt, I have found the critic is rarely the Man in the Arena, whose own face has been marred with dust and sweat, but more likely to be one who sits in the stands.

Education still has lots of gendered titles – Bachelor, Master, and I recently became a Fellow, even though I am certainly no bloke. Uni titles have seemingly escaped the sweep of the politically correct broom.

I have also at various times been all of the tricky trinity of the sisterhood: Miss, Mrs and Ms. Men get off lightly, given they are nearly all Mr, which does not indicate marital status.

Even these titles are now on the nose, it seems. Victorian public servants were this week instructed to avoid using Mr and Mrs,

wife and husband, sir and madam out of respect for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Fingers crossed our government doesn’t follow suit.

The missive said inclusive language ensured no one was left out of either conversations or work. They urge the use of they/them instead of he/him or she/her, even though only a smidgen of people consider their gender ID to be non-binary.

Talk about throwing the baby out

“…ask how a person likes to be referred to and go with that” with the bathwater. Some of us love being male or female, like to be addressed with respect at work and would find it uncomfortable to be neutralised in conversation or communication.

The sensible approach is surely to ask how a person likes to be referred to and go with that. Removing choices disrespects the majority as well as individuals. And surely decisions on what to call others begins and ends with showing them respect.

S

tarting your morning with a fresh cup of coffee is just a hop, skip and a jump from a popular Sunshine Coast beach.

Lisa and Keith Marshall opened Coolum’s Rock Hop Espresso just one week before Christmas after months of research to find the right fit to fulfil their business dreams.

Now they hope their new venture is paying off after a successful holiday period.

While some thought they were “crazy” to open during an economic crisis and in the height of the pre-Christmas

madness, Ms Marshall says locals and holidaymakers are loving what they have to offer. “It has been busy,” she says.

“The community has been really, really supportive and we’ve been amazed how friendly [people have been] and even other cafe owners have come in and welcomed us to the area.

“We have a lot of people moving into the new Allura estate near us and they are saying they are so glad to have a local place right on their doorstep.”

Ms Marshall admits they are riding the wave that comes with owning a small business and are glad they took the risk to

remain open across the recent public holidays.

“We’re so glad we did it because we had so many people coming in who were so excited to get their daily cup of coffee on Christmas and Boxing Day,” Ms Marshall says.

“Like every new business, there are days when it’s really busy and then you get a quiet day where you get a bit worried, so it’s a bit of a roller coaster at the moment.

“We’ve spoken to lots of people who have done similar things and they say you need to give it three months or so.”

Previously owning a business in Sydney before moving to Queensland four years ago, the Marshalls knew they wanted to combine their love of coffee and the outdoors in one.

“It’s hard to know when the idea of opening our own cafe actually became a reality,” Ms Marshall says.

“We talked about it for a long time, researched the industry, looked at suitable locations, found an amazing mentor in the industry, visited many cafes, and then one day we were actually on our way and the dream became a reality.

“We have young children and value time with them, and so we were looking for a business that would give us the opportunity to work hard at something we love, but balance that out with quality family time.”

The couple thoroughly researched the industry and the ever-changing health pandemic to ensure they created a business that would provide both staff and customer satisfaction and be flexible to adapt to potential restrictions.

“I think the biggest thing is juggling how many staff you have on to be able to provide people with a good experience,” Ms Marshall says.

“We have really tried to put on as many staff as we can so that people aren’t having to wait long periods and they can have a good experience without the staff feeling stressed too.”

The cafe name was inspired by the Marshalls’ love of outdoor adventures. “I am an avid mountain climber and ocean swimmer and Keith a diver and spear fisherman, so our combined love of the ocean and mountains seemed a natural fit with Coolum, where the mountain meets the sea,” Ms Marshall says.

“Rock hopping brings back wonderful childhood memories of freedom, adventure and delight, and we wanted to bring this mixture of nature and adventure to the cafe.”

Rock Hop Espresso serves Sunshine Beach-roasted Entity Coffee as well as treats from several wholesome food providers across the Sunshine Coast. The cafe is open daily from 5.30am to 12.30pm at 12b Elizabeth Street, Coolum Beach.

hen Frederick Sandell was born in 1921, Billy Hughes was prime minister of Australia, Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize for Physics and the Royal Australian Air Force was formed.

On January 15, Mr Sandell marked his 100th birthday, celebrating a long life with a decorated career as an accountant, administration manager and as a finance manager for a newspaper.

Mr Sandell was born in Lithgow, New South Wales, and married wife Jean in 1956. She gave birth to the couple’s only child, daughter Mirth Fabbro, in 1965.

Mr Sandell is well-recognised in the accounting industry and Ms Fabbro says one of her father’s greatest achievements was completing his three degrees.

“He began his accountancy course by correspondence in 1936 and in about 1942 obtained his degree with the Association of Accountants of Australia,” Ms Fabbro says.

“He also obtained degrees with the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, and later with the Australian Institute of Cost Accountants.

“Another highlight was being recognised for his 70-year membership of the Australian Society of Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries.”

Beginning his career at BHP in Port Kembla and finishing in Rockhampton with Capricornia Newspapers, Mr Sandell remembers fondly working in Sydney during construction of the Opera House.

“A special memory for Dad was when he worked for Brambles in Sydney,” Ms Fabbro says.

“His office was situated in Gold Fields House, and every lunch hour whilst the Sydney Opera House was being built, he would walk around the construction site and view the progress.

“In February 2019, Dad was also awarded a 50 years ‘jewel’ medallion to hour his 50 years of service to Freemasonry.

“Dad joined the Mount Morgan Scottish Lodge in 1969 when he worked there in the mine office.”

POLICE BRIEFS Maroochydore Police continues to work with local government, licensed premises and safe night precincts in a partnership to increase public awareness of alcoholfuelled violence and its consequences.

Since 2007, three people have lost their lives on the Sunshine Coast, where alcohol-fuelled violence was a contributing factor.

Gloria Steensen knows the devastation alcohol-fuelled violence can cause, after losing her son Bruce when he was punched in the head at Mooloolaba in February 2014. “Becoming an adult isn’t about privileges, it’s about responsibility,” Ms Steensen says. “Some of our young

people seem to have forgotten they also need to contribute to a safer community, and they can begin to do this by placing greater social value on tolerance and respect for others.”

The partnership aims to promote the message ‘Stop the violence, just let it go’.

Ms Steensen says “just let it go” were the final words her son spoke before he died.

“There is nothing wrong with enjoying a night out, however, everyone needs to know that any type of violence will not be tolerated by the Sunshine Coast community,” Maroochydore Police Station’s operations leader Senior Sergeant Matt Robertson says.

“They both are still fiercely independent, active and live at home.”

In September last year the couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. “They had lunch at the Kenilworth Hotel where their wedding photo was taken on the steps inside of the hotel,” Ms Fabbro says.

wo Sunshine Coast Rotary Clubs have answered the call for families needing to stay close to Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), donating $11,000 between them to help cover accommodation costs at Wishlist House.

Thanks to the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific and Rotary Club of

Nambour, Wishlist is now able to accommodate several families in its accommodation facilities who are unable to afford the subsidised nightly rate.

“Accommodation costs are kept to a minimum at both Reed House at Nambour Hospital and Wishlist House, Birtinya but the charges serve to cover upkeep and maintenance costs of both

facilities,” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says.

“The $60 per night rate is met by the guest or covered by the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) for patients travelling beyond a 50-kilometre radius for treatment at SCUH or Nambour Hospital.”

Rotary Club of Nambour president Rod Tunstall says his club was able to contribute $6000 to support families in a time of health crisis – from young to old.

“The Rotary Club of Nambour has long regarded the work of Wishlist as invaluable in contributing to the wellbeing of patients and families utilising Sunshine Coast health services,” Mr Tunstall says. “This work complements the health and humanitarian goals of Rotarians.

“Our Rotary Club and the whole District 9600 team is conscious of the needs of people in need, and is once again proud to partner with Wishlist.”

In the 11 years since it opened, Wishlist has provided hospital accommodation for more than 16,500 guests at Reed House next to Nambour Hospital. In April 2020, the purpose-built six-bedroom Wishlist House opened in Birtinya.

The not-for-profit charity also funded two parents retreats at SCUH to support the neonatal unit and paediatric wards.

INNOVATIVE CENTRE ALL SET FOR LITTLE LEARNERS

A

new early learning centre on the Sunshine Coast is encouraging children to take off their shoes and get back to nature exploring play-based learning.

Sippy Downs Early Learning Centre is set among a barnyard full of animals, exotic amazon birds and includes a reptile program, sustainable vegetable garden, sandpits and a waterpark.

Centre director Talisha Long says the facility promises to provide a unique learning experience for up to 105 children with an educational approach that is based on the holistic Steiner approach.

“The Steiner approach focuses on experiential learning; making, doing, creating and producing, with learning based on what is relevant and appropriate to the student’s stage of development.

“It’s a very educational and fun approach to learning which I am certain the children will really enjoy.”

The barnyard of animals includes two miniatures goats, silky chickens, Amazon parrots, green tree frogs and frill-neck lizards, while an in-house

reptile and animal expert will teach children about caring for animals.

“We also have a waterpark, which includes a river where the children can control the waterflow and make boats to sail down the river while a fruit and vegetable garden will teach children to learn how to grow their own vegetables and cook them in the kitchen to on-sell to the adjoining cafe,” Ms Long says.

In what is considered a first for the Sunshine Coast, renowned local chef Tony Kelly will operate a commercial kitchen and create daily menus for the children.

Mr Kelly will produce nutritious food for a range of dietary needs.

“We believe nutrition and wellbeing are really important for growing minds and bodies so it’s going to be really interesting to see what he creates to keep the children happy each day,” Ms Long says.

The centre will employ 30 full and part-time staff and cater for children from six weeks to five years.

Zion Wihongi has gained a place in the New Colombo Plan (NCP) program with a $68,000 Australian Government scholarship. The program supports Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen knowledge of the region.

“Through the NCP initiative, I hope to spread awareness of women in the IT field” Currently studying a Bachelor of Information Communications Technology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Ms Wihongi hopes to spend two semesters studying at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

“This will equip me with experience and understanding and connect me with professionals in the field, ultimately allowing me to pursue a closer engagement with Korea.

“I also intend to do an internship in cybersecurity in Singapore, which is renowned for its safe and secure cyberenvironment.”

Ms Wihongi previously spent 18 months volunteering in Japan. “I was involved in community events, taught English classes, worked alongside locals to rebuild schools, assisted at orphanages and organised fundraisers.”

EDUCATION AWARD GOES TO ST ANDREW’S St Andrew’s Anglican College in Peregian Springs has won Best Co-Curricular Program at the 2020 Australian Education awards.

The school’s Global Learning Program focuses on building personal capacity and cultural intelligence, offering a variety of learning opportunities as well as training modules through the college’s research and innovation unit, St Andrew’s Institute of Learning (SAIL).

Co-curricular programs last year were made difficult due to social distancing and travel restrictions.

“Our regular service trips to Cambodia and Thailand, experiential learning trips to New York, China and Everest Base Camp, and visitations and exchanges with our partner schools in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Spain were all cancelled,” director of SAIL Tim Barrett says.

“This limited our communication with our partner schools to Zoom calls and increasing our focus on local opportunities.

“Despite the uncertainty that still exists around [2021] we will maintain our desire to provide co-curricular opportunities that develop well-rounded students who are equipped with the skills and capabilities necessary to face whatever the future may bring.”

group of Caloundra women is hoping to make a difference to the lives of women giving birth in third-world countries through an International Women’s Day fundraiser.

Zonta Club of Caloundra City will host and afternoon tea event on March 6 to raise money for, and pack, lifesaving birthing kits.

Club president Pam Hall says these small but meaningful packs give women access to six items for a safer, more hygienic process.

“Birth kits are an incredibly simple way to save lives,” Ms Hall says. “The birthing kits are a simple tool to assist in basic hygienic to allow a woman to give birth.

“These are women who give birth in fields, under trees, so they are not in hospitals”

“These are women who give birth in fields, under trees, so they are not in hospitals, they are not in clinics, they are nowhere near qualified medical health.”

The kits grew from an idea at an Adelaide Zonta club and include a piece of soap, a plastic sheet, gauze, wipes, string and a small blade to cut the umbilical cord.

Zonta Caloundra has been involved in

the process for more than 20 years and, with little to no fundraising opportunities in 2020, is hoping the community will give generously to the cause.

“We’ve done thousands of [packs] over the years,” Ms Hall says. “Our last time was 2019 and we packed 600 on that day and that was just our club members, assisted by students from Caloundra State High School.

“Our intention is to pack 2000-plus at our International Women’s Day event.

“It’s an opportunity to recast International Women’s Day to focus on some of our sisters internationally who don’t have the advantages we have.”

Ms Hall is asking the community to buy tickets to the afternoon tea at The Events Centre and calling on businesses or corporate organisations to book a table.

“The cost is $25 per person and that will get you afternoon tea and cover the cost of two kits. We are also keen to hear from corporate sponsors who can help cover costs.”

A VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Bryan and Erica Costigan have enjoyed an eventful 65 years of marriage. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa. ship, Bryan and Erica Costigan’s story is one that began with a love of tennis.

The pair first met on Bryan’s 19th birthday in 1952, and their eldest son Michael Costigan says shortly after that, they played in the same B-grade tennis competition in Brisbane.

“Erica’s cousin played competitive tennis with Bryan and introduced Bryan to Erica at the Costigan family home at Indooroopilly, where all practice was done on the family court,” Michael says.

Their first date was a cinema trip to see Singin’ in the Rain, and by August 1954 they were engaged.

Both busy in their careers – Bryan working in Western Queensland as a tradesman for Shell and Erica as a home economics and domestic science teacher in Maryborough, the couple finally wed at St Ignatius Church in Brisbane on January 7, 1956.

Golden Beach couple who has been influential in shaping the history around the Caloundra region, this month celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Well known for their involvement in Caloundra surf lifesaving and RSL clubs, for their advocacy to have memorial plaques erected along a coastal strip, and assisting in the discovery of the final resting place of a sunken wartime hospital

The couple had four children, and in 1970 purchased a block of waterfront land at Golden Beach. It was a family affair to build the home, and in 1978 the family made the permanent move from Brisbane.

“There were dirt roads, no gutters, many kangaroos and lots of trees,” Erica says.

“The Pumicestone Passage was across the road. We had bought a piece of heaven.

“I could stand at the kitchen sink and see the surf at Kings Beach. Michael used to paddle his surf ski out the front of our house and collect oysters for lunch on Sunday.”

Erica taught at Caloundra State High School from 1978 to 1981 and as time went on, the couple started Costigan’s Mobile Maintenance, introducing the first cherry picker and commercial UHF radio communications systems to the Sunshine Coast.

A UHF repeater station was also built on acreage the Costigans owned at Bald Knob.

LOCAL ADVOCACY The Costigans were instrumental in several significant happenings in the region, including memorial plaques across the headland at Kings Beach, recognising those who lost their lives fighting during war.

“Bryan and Erica came up with the idea to have memorial plaques on wide concrete pathways around the Caloundra headland from the MetropolitanCaloundra Surf Life Saving Club to the access road at Shelly Beach,” Michael says.

“Their ideas and plans were suggested to the Sunshine Coast Council at the end of 1993.

“The first plaques were laid April 1995.

CENTAUR HOSPITAL SHIP Erica and Bryan were also instrumental in the location of the lost Centaur hospital ship which sunk off the Queensland coast in 1943.

Bryan’ father, Joe Costigan, was set to leave from Brisbane aboard the ship, but 30 minutes prior to departure, his orders were revoked and he never left.

“Ever since the sinking of the Centaur, Erica always had a curious interest as to where the resting place of the Centaur was,” Michael says.

Dedicatimg 35 years to finding its location, Erica spent years speaking with relatives of survivors and documenting information.

“An oceanographer, Mr David Mearns, was appointed by the federal government to find the Centaur in 2009,” Michael says.

“Because of their knowledge regarding the Centaur, Erica and Bryan were invited

wo Sunshine Coast Rotary Clubs have answered the call for families needing to stay close to Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), donating $11,000 between them to help cover accommodation costs at Wishlist House.

Thanks to the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific and Rotary Club of

Nambour, Wishlist is now able to accommodate several families in its accommodation facilities who are unable to afford the subsidised nightly rate.

“Accommodation costs are kept to a minimum at both Reed House at Nambour Hospital and Wishlist House, Birtinya but the charges serve to cover upkeep and maintenance costs of both

facilities,” Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says.

“The $60 per night rate is met by the guest or covered by the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) for patients travelling beyond a 50-kilometre radius for treatment at SCUH or Nambour Hospital.”

Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific president Evelyn McCorkell says the project strikes a chord with the club, knowing there will be increasing need for services as the region grows.

“As a local Rotary club, what better way to support our community than to help with funding for accommodation, or other facilities needed, for families who in turn are supporting a sick member of their family,” she says.

“We are so pleased to be able to help such a worthwhile cause.”

In the 11 years since it opened, Wishlist has provided hospital accommodation for more than 16,500 guests at Reed House next to Nambour Hospital. In April 2020, the purpose-built six-bedroom Wishlist House opened in Birtinya.

The not-for-profit charity also funded two parents retreats at SCUH to support the neonatal unit and paediatric wards.

Our annual Christmas trailer raffle was drawn just before Christmas. The winner was a lady from Currimundi who had purchased $10 worth of tickets. The lady in question has no children so the trailer’s contents of a wide range of wonderful gifts were donated to the Kmart Wishing Tree.

The raffle raised almost $7000. $2500 was donated to Wishlist. Smart Pups received a similar amount. The balance will be delivered to the club’s youth-related projects.

Our club supports Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) financially by conducting, arguably, the Sunshine Coast’s largest, fun-filled trivia night to be held this year on Thursday, March 4. ROMAC provides children from developing countries with life-giving or dignity-restoring surgery in Australia and New Zealand.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR THIS GROUNDSMAN

W

hile many cricket-loving teenagers focus on batting and bowling, Elias Cottrell dreams of the perfect pitch.

The Little Mountain 14-year-old could be the youngest official groundsman in Australia and he is eager to forge a career at the nation’s top cricket venues.

Elias is establishing a reputation for producing quality pitches at Caloundra Cricket Club. And it seems there is a real future for him in the role, with a stint at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field beckoning.

He currently works at CCC from Monday to Friday, 7am to midday.

“I was just volunteering [initially early last year], helping the head groundsman.

Then the job opened up and I took it. I gained some experience, with the help of a few blokes at the club and it’s just gone on,” he says.

Caloundra’s previous groundsman shifted to well-known Junction Oval in Melbourne, with Elias and fellow local cricket tragic Jack Cochrane taking over.

The teenager has since developed his skills and taken a leading role at the club.

“I’m really into hands-on work and I enjoy preparing the wicket and using the machinery,” he says.

He relishes creating a pitch, which has something to offer everyone. “As a bowler I’d love to say I like [producing] a green wicket with heaps of movement. But the ideal pitch would be flat with a little bit of bounce.”

Elias has a passion for his new role.

“I was always interested in seeing how it works,” he says. “As a player you just turn up at the ground and play but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make a cricket pitch.”

He is looking forward to a likely stint at the home of Queensland cricket, Allan Border Field.

“That will be great to get some experience from the blokes there,” he says.

“I’m gaining experience, to go further with it [as a career].”

Horticulture and he does his schooling in the afternoons, via Cairns Distance Education. He also plays for Caloundra under-16s, Caloundra third grade and for the Sunshine Coast under-15 representative team.

Ms Roberts who, with husband Scott, runs national finance business IBN from their Sunshine Coast base, is finding a new lease of life and career after starting a Professional Communication degree at USC in 2020.

Until her studies, the Little Mountain woman had never picked up a DSLR camera. Now she is being recognised as one of Queenslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emerging photomedia artists and is using her newfound skills to improve the marketing and promotions of her business, which specialises in commercial and development finance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was around Christmas 2019 when we decided to reassess our business direction,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d wanted to do something constructive to future-proof us, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d studied business years ago and felt almost burnt out.â&#x20AC;?

Interested in public relations, communications and advertising, her studies allowed her to examine facets of business in an objective way.

The encouragement of photography lecturer Tricia King gave Ms Roberts the confidence to enter a photo for the First Light exhibition of emerging Queensland photo-media artists at The Maud Street Photo Gallery in Brisbane. She was chosen from hundreds of entries as an emerging artist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d always loved taking photos with my phone but now that I can use a DSLR, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to take my own stock images for marketing and promotions in 2021.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dickson says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The computers will go to our EH Education Centre where English language classes and computer skills are taught. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Music is a major part of the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leisure activities and the keyboard will get some serious use.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Dickson says Timorese Deo da Costa, whose idea it was to establish the hostel and continues to manage the facility, in December won a human rights award presented to him by the president of East Timor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This shows how much our project is respected and appreciated.â&#x20AC;?

BANKFOOT HOUSE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS From making us happier and improving our health, to increasing our sense of personal satisfaction, the benefits of volunteering are boundless.

Now locals have the opportunity to lend their expertise and time with visitor experiences guides needed at Bankfoot House.

The heritage precinct in the Glass House Mountains has a variety of roles available and Sunshine Coast Council’s cultural heritage co-ordinator Peter Connell says volunteers do not need any specific skills, just an interest in history and people.

“We give full on-the-job training, so just a desire to learn, enthusiasm and the ability to engage with others is all potential volunteers need,” Mr Connell says.

“We receive applications from university or TAFE students looking to further their careers or research studies, retirees wanting to connect with and help the community and those with a passion for heritage.

“Volunteers become part of an amazing network and receive free workshops, annual bus trips and many other opportunities to learn and participate in our heritage.”

Roles include event assistants, tour guides, education program guides, researchers, collections care assistants and data entry assistants, with monthly weekend shifts required.

Associate Professor Michael Bowen from The University of Sydney is an expert on the effects of brain chemicals and says volunteering can trigger the reward pathway in the brain, releasing feel-good neurotransmitters such as oxytocin.

“The buzz you get from these neurotransmitters is sometimes known as ‘the helper’s high’,” Dr Bowen says.

hen Shane and Robyn Bell freed themselves from a life of time-consuming home upkeep, taking up a low-maintenance, lock-up-and-go lifestyle at GemLife Bribie Island over-50s lifestyle resort, they never anticipated the adventure awaiting them.

As we get older our health or increasing levels of frailty may have an impact on the choices we can make about where we live.

Where we live in our older years is not just a decision about physical location but also how we can access care and support.

When care is needed, many people compare the option of a retirement village against residential aged care. While both provide supportive environments for older people, they are not complete substitutes.

The funding and care implications are quite different.

Retirement villages offer the opportunity to live in a community of older people. The village operator will maintain the external building and community garden areas, but it is still independent living. For an additional cost, you may be able to access support inside your home but services vary from one retirement village to the next, and unless provided through a Home Care package, costs are not subsidised by the government.

Residential aged care bundles fully supported living and care together with accommodation. This care is provided 24/7 and the costs are heavily subsidised by the government.

The modern operating theatre looks very different compared with other areas of the hospital or GP surgeries that patients often visit. Powerful microscopes, computer navigation and robots have replaced the old, clunky pieces of equipment that were previously used to perform operations to make surgery more streamlined than ever.

Neurosurgeons have always been at the forefront of adopting new, safer technologies to allow operations to be performed in the most delicate areas of the brain and spine. Luckily, most patients will never need the services of a specialist neurosurgeon as most cases of pins and needles, sciatica and the feeling of ‘electric shocks’ in the arm or leg settle with time and following the advice of your GP. For those unlucky enough to have ongoing pain issues, treatment can be undertaken locally at the modern Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital using cutting-edge techniques to get you going and enjoying life again.

The Sunshine Coast Haematology & Oncology Clinic (SCHOC) is proud to be offering a number of clinical trials to residents of the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas, in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC).

Over the past year, SCHOC and USC have been running two clinical trials: one for people who suffer the rare blood condition cold agglutinin disease; and the other for people who with advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin.

In 2021, there will be an increased number of new trials available to potentially treat a variety of conditions.

These include melanoma, AML, B-cell lymphoma, lymphodoema and myelofibrosis.

Medical oncologist Dr Hong Shue states that “clinical trials provide access to new and innovative drugs or treatment pathways that would otherwise not be available”. All costs involved with clinical trials are covered for eligible patients, regardless of whether they have private health insurance or not.

Patients with symptomatic hip and knee osteoarthritis will often ask me if they should have joint replacement surgery.

This decision comes down to a balance of risk versus benefit.

Considerations in this analysis include the severity of the pain, the impact on their quality of life, activity profile, age, other health problems as well as having appropriate attempts to manage the problem non-operatively.

If the potential risks are higher than the potential benefits, I will inform patients they are not a candidate for surgery. We will then have a long conversation about the non-operative measures they can take to improve their quality of life.

When patients are a candidate for joint replacement surgery, I always present the non-operative options as well as inform them about the risks and benefits of the surgery.

It is never for me to tell patients when it is the right time to have elective surgery.

This is an intensely personal decision with so many factors. Only the patient knows when the time is right.

unshine Coast lifesavers have hit another barrier towards their elite aspirations with the Nutri-Grain Iron Series postponed again. The opening rounds of the sport’s pinnacle competition were originally scheduled to take place at Kingscliff in northern New South Wales on December 18 and 19 but were postponed a fortnight ago due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney.

It was due to kick off on January 16 and 17, but ongoing uncertainty and complexity in relation to COVID-19 has again led to the series start being further

The Coast is set to boast a stellar cast of lifesavers in the 2020/21 series, including defending ironwoman champion Lana Rogers, Cooper Williams, Tiarrn Raymond, Tayla Halliday, Emma Woods, Electra Outram and Tiarnee Massie.

“It is really unfortunate that we have had to again make the decision to postpone the start of the Nutri-Grain Ironman and Ironwoman Series, but the

decision has been made with the best interests of everyone involved and the wider community,” says SLSA board member and surf sports board chair Suzanne Storrie.

“It is impossible to 100 per cent confirm how the series will proceed, but we are determined to explore all options to run the six rounds of the elite and Next Gen Series. Our staff are actively working through options with a wide range of stakeholders.

“At this stage, we are working towards starting the series in Kurrawa, Queensland

on the second weekend in February (this was originally scheduled as the final weekend of the series) and will then look to add additional dates for the series in and around other events in the surf sports calendar.

“However, we absolutely recognise that for this to go ahead, it will require an improvement in government health advice and border restrictions, so we may need to adapt again, which is just an unfortunately reality given the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 response.”

Sunshine Coast surfers will head back to Australia after the World Surf League cancelled the next two rounds of the Championship Tour.

Julian Wilson, Keely Andrew and tour rookie Isabella Nichols were all part of the WSL tour hub in Hawaii as the 2021 competition hit the water in late December.

The tour was ground to a halt during the Pipe Masters after several members of the WSL staff tested positive to COVID-19.

The upcoming Sunset Open scheduled for January 19 to 28 has been cancelled.

The league also decided to postpone the CT Santa Cruz Pro, scheduled for February 2 to 12.

The WSL issued a statement saying the decision to postpone the last planned event of the US leg of the tour was based primarily on the surge of COVID-19 cases in California.

“The postponement is also heavily influenced by the length of time our athletes have been away from home,” says the WSL. “And by the complexities of global travel during this pandemic, which would have caused significant logistic challenges for athletes and staff to travel home and return to California for the event.

“We look forward to safely continuing the 2021 CT season with the Australia leg starting at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April.”

Former Sunshine Coast Falcon Harry Grant is back in Storm colours. Now a household name, the 22-year-old has had a phenomenal 12 months with the Wests Tigers after a historic player loan deal with the Melbourne Storm.

The Yeppoon product played 15 games for the Tigers during the 2020 NRL season and was named the club’s Rookie of the Year.

He then went on to win the Dally M Rookie of the Year and earned a call up for the Queensland Maroons in the State of Origin series decider.

Grant says it’s a ‘bit of a change’ to be back in Melbourne.

“It doesn’t really feel like I’ve left, the majority of the squad is still here and it’s

good to be back,” he says.

“It’s pretty exciting, the boys finished the year at the top of the table and had a great result in the comp.

“It was pretty special seeing the boys win the comp, especially all that they went through being based on the Sunny Coast and away from Melbourne and Victoria – it’s a credit to the whole squad really.”

The tenacious hooker was moving past his big year and was looking to the future.

“I’ll put all that behind and build for this season,” Grant says.

“I had a little break between the end of season and the Origin camp I’m due back now – a few of the other boys are still on break, they’ll come back at the end of January.”
