We speak to Repair Cafe organiser Dorothy Gillingham and hear about the reasons that prompted her to follow through with its creation and also from the volunteers who have put their hands up to help make it a reality. In my experience, it often seems that grassroots initiatives play a key role in stepping up for positive change.

The Sunshine Coast has attracted people from all walks of life, bringing with

FROM ZOOM TO TIKTOK: THE TECH WINNERS AND LOSERS OF 2020 Last year we all engaged more with technology. Here’s what we loved, and what we didn’t. WORDS: AAP, Barbara Ortutay and Mae Anderson.

e streamed, we Zoomed, we ordered groceries and houseplants online, we created virtual villages while navigating laptop shortages to work and learn from home. When it comes to technology, 2020 was a year like no other.

Here are the year’s tech winners and losers.

LOSERS: Virtual reality – As the world adjusted

The first recorded encounter between a European and a koala was in 1798, and an image of the animal was published in 1810 by naturalist George Perry.

The vast rock of Uluru sits in the red centre of Australia, surrounded by scrubland and sacred to various Indigenous peoples in the area. IF IT’S BROKEN, FIX IT The mending ethos of yesteryear is being embraced as repair cafes grow in popularity. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

roken items deserve a second life. That’s the motto espoused on the International Repair Cafe’s Facebook page.

From the end of the month, Caloundra residents will have the opportunity to mend rather than dispose of broken items after Pelican Waters resident Dorothy Gillingham went to work and organised a local Repair Cafe.

Located at the Caloundra Community Centre, volunteers from various areas including woodworkers groups and mens sheds have mobilised to donate their collective time and skills to bring your items back to working order.

Mrs Gillingham says she and her husband came across a repair cafe at a sustainability event in Adelaide some two years ago and were impressed with the operation’s practical waste reduction initiative.

“I believe in keeping landfill as low as possible,” she says.

Additionally, Mrs Gillingham admired the International Repair Cafe’s ethos of supporting a world where neighbours help each other to repair as many items as possible and to reduce waste.

With all this mind, Mrs Gillingham started making plans for a Repair Cafe in her home town of Caloundra. However,

similar to many things, COVID forced them to put their plans on hold, but in 2021, with community support they’re ready to roll.

Neighbours certainly did the right thing in Caloundra when their community centre, together with volunteers, came to the party by giving Mrs Gillingham an enthusiastic response and space at the Centre to hold the Repair Cafe.

Mrs Gillingham says: “The purpose is to provide a congenial meeting place where people in our community can bring small household items to be fixed, mended and/or repaired so they aren’t

thrown away, but continue to be used and loved.”

“This subsequently means that the item doesn’t end up in landfill. They do not have to buy a replacement, on both counts thus reducing carbon emissions from the production of new items and discarding of old, and ultimately reducing waste and helping with the preservation of our planet.”

Mrs Gillingham says she is also hoping young people will become involved and take pleasure in seeing their toys/bikes/clothes restored to good working order and being a part of the repair/mending process.”

THE REBIRTH OF A VIOLIN CASE Richard Poole is one of the volunteers at Caloundra’s Repair Cafe. His wife Denise Poole has written this story to show us how Mr Poole’s repair work changed the life of one violin case.

“O

ne day in December 2020 when my husband Richard was at his woodwork club, he was offered a very badly damaged violin case to repair – it looked as though it should be firewood,” Denise Poole recalls.

“The person who left violin case advised that he didn’t want it back and didn’t give any background history.

However, Richard found it was made from cedar and estimated it to be around 100 years old, with that in mind he decided to start repairs.

“Over the next three to four weeks, he

toiled away making steady progress. He solved the many dilemmas that presented along the way and now finally you see the finished object,” Mrs Poole says.

“By Christmas when the family visited, the violin case was near completion.

“In some ways, the case spoke about the year that 2020 had been,” she says.

That became the sentiment behind the thought of extending the life cycle for the violin case.

“The inside of the repaired lid was painted in white and the family members were invited to write a message about COVID-19 – in the style of a time capsule.

“They could write whatever they felt was appropriate for them, and as this would be covered by the plush lining it might never be seen unless some time in the years ahead it needed another refurbishment,” explains Mrs Poole.

“The case is now finished – beautiful – ready for another useful life. When I look at it, I feel hopeful that we can rebuild things that are broken. It takes time. They may not be same as they were before, but they will be useful and valued again. Yes, it takes persistence, patience, knowledge, and the acceptance that perhaps they won’t be perfect.”

ENVIROMENT NEWS Due to the pandemic, Queensland Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon says the government has pushed back the start of the single use plastics ban from June to September to allow businesses to adapt. The ban starts with items such as straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates.

In March 2020, the government asked Queenslanders to decide the future of single-use plastic items and received a clear message.

OTHER SUNSHINE COAST REPAIR LOCATIONS Maleny Fix it Cafe is a social enterprise run from Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The aim is to reduce landfill and encourage recycling and repurposing. All repairs are assessed and if fixable are repaired for a cost of $5 donation to MNC. Maleny Fix It Cafe is run by volunteers and encourages social connection and aims to reduce social isolation. Due to legislation, repair of electrical goods is not currently undertaken.

VSC VOLUNTEERS WANTED CHARGING BAYS ADD TO SUPERHIGHWAY The Sunshine Coast now has two charging bays, helping Queensland’s electric vehicle superhighway grow. This charging bay facility is easily accessible off the Bruce Highway at Forest Glen, plugging a key gap in the state’s superhighway from Coolangatta in the south, as far north as Cairns, and out to Toowoomba. Divisional councillor Ted Hungerford says securing the facility is a major coup for the region and presents an opportunity for Sunshine Coast Council to deliver a range of economic, environmental and social benefits for the community.

“This new charging station cements itself as a vital stop along the world’s longest electric vehicle superhighway in a single state or region, spanning more than 1782 kilometres,” Cr Hungerford says. “The electric vehicle facility at Forest Glen provides two charging bays with an AC fast charger and a DC charger. Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) is looking for volunteers to help at the hinterland Visitor Information Centres. VSC operates three volunteer-run Visitor Information Centres at Montville, Glass House Mountains and Sunshine Coast Airport. “Word-of-mouth referrals is still one of the most trusted forms of information for travellers, and our volunteers do an incredible job of showcasing to visitors what we have to offer here on the Sunshine Coast,” VSC’s Andrew Fairbairn says. “We are currently looking for more volunteers to join our teams at Montville and Glass House Mountains.

Surf Life Saving Queensland is urging those heading out on boats and jet skis these holidays to abide by marine regulations. SLSQ services rescued 32 people in December 2019 and January 2020 after they came into difficulty while on a motorised boat or jet ski. Sunshine Coast regional operations manager Aaron Purchase says it is important you have the necessary safety equipment as outlined by Maritime Safety Queensland before heading out on the water. “It is really important for all skippers to ensure they are carrying the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel… Before hitting the water make sure you check the wind, surf and weather forecast.”

The Office of Fair Trading has conducted inspections at 679 second-hand motor dealers, auction houses and wreckers across Queensland to ensure dangerous vehicles were not being sold to unsuspecting consumers, as part of a national compliance operation for the Compulsory Takata Recall Notice. Acting Attorney-General Mick de Brenni says more than 20,000 vehicles were checked, which found 105 vehicles fitted with the faulty Takata airbags. RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner says,“Takata airbags are ticking time bombs which could go off at any time.”

A VERY SNAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALISON On New Year’s Day, Australia Zoo celebrated the 91st birthday of its American alligator. Alison arrived at Australia Zoo from another wildlife park in 1987 and has been admired by visitors since. “Alison has been a part of our Australia Zoo family for over 33 years and we are so excited to celebrate and share this special day with her,” Bindi Irwin says. “Alison is a very sweet old lady, who loves nothing more than a snack and basking in the sun all day long.” American alligators are found in freshwater swamps and lakes throughout the south-eastern United States and play an important role in maintaining healthy and stable waterways. The apex predator was once at risk of extinction but is no longer classified as endangered. “We continue to research these modern-day dinosaurs using the same techniques [Steve Irwin] developed, and they are now used in every continent crocodilians are found in.”

Sunshine Coast Blue Care nurse Alison Vallejo was recently presented with Uniting Care’s 2020 Full Circle Bringing People Together Award and the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife Award. As part of her research, she conducted a clinical trial into new therapies for chronic wounds, in particular the use of low-frequency ultrasound as a tool to clean wound tissue, combined with a topical antiseptic.

THE HOUSE OF HEMP Could this sustainable home at Moffat Beach be the way of the future? WORDS: Kat Donaghey.

M

arcus Finch has heard all the wisecracks about smoking his house.

The designer home in upmarket Moffat Beach is made of hemp in a simple technology that dates back to Roman times.

Marcus and wife Robyn built their dream home out of the tough fibrous plant to reduce their impact on the planet.

“There are have been a lot of jokes about smoking your house – I am so over it,” laughs Mr Finch, a former developer who now campaigns for the Greens.

“You would have to smoke the whole house to get any effect.”

The fast-growing hemp plant, a strain of the cannabis sativa, is enjoying a revival around the world as builders opt for sustainable, yet affordable, materials.

Hemp stalks are finely chopped and mixed with a lime binder and water to form hempcrete or hemp blocks that get stronger with time, with a lifespan of about 100 years.

The plant, which can grow from seed to harvest in four months, is touted as resistant to mould, pests and fire.

As a building material it breathes and has natural insulating properties that save homeowners money on cooling and heating.

And while the fire-proof material won’t go up in smoke, the entire house will one day decompose, leaving no trace on the block.

“At the end of its life you can break it all up and turn it back to the earth, like mulch,” says Mr Finch.

“Every building has its life and I expect in 100 years a new house will go here and we won’t be leaving more waste for the next generation.”

Their eco-home is in good company, with the most expensive house on the Sunshine Coast – a $24 million mansion at Sunshine Beach owned by hemp tycoon Evgeny Skigin – also made of the natural fibre The Finches built their high-set hemp house five years ago after demolishing the asbestos beach shack that had been their home for 12 years.

Their home sits halfway up Moffat hill in the exclusive beachside suburb of luxury abodes, with stunning panoramic views of the ocean and Glass House Mountains from the upstairs deck.

While living entirely off 10kW solar power – with a power bill of just $1.50 this year – the Finches still enjoy the benefits of modern life such as fans, airconditioning and appliances.

Unlike modern houses which leave a significant carbon footprint of some 25 tonnes, the hemp house is carbon negative, in fact absorbing carbon over its life.

Every detail of the house and garden has been carefully considered for its environmental impact. Timber from the old beach shack was repurposed for an internal staircase and kitchen benchtops.

Vegetables are grown in wicking beds to conserve water.

They collect rain in a 13,000-litre underground tank and have a rooftop garden on the garage for insulation and to reduce stormwater run-off.

Builder Johan Tijssen, director of Hemp Block Australia in Maleny, says hemp was a premium building material that is affordable and environmentally friendly.

The Hemp Block System he sells thought Australia, New Zealand and the US is taking off in Europe, where France is the largest hemp producer in the European Union and is gaining traction in the USA. “It’s not a hippy story, it’s a proven, engineered and legitimate alternative building material,” he says.

“It’s a premium product – like going to a restaurant instead of Maccas – but without the premium price and with a healthier, better performance and longevity and worth for your money.”

Mr Tijssen says hemp technology has advanced since the Finches’ house was built with the hempcrete mixed on site.

Today builders can use tongue-andgroove hemp blocks, which simplifies and speeds up the process.

“You don’t need mortar; you just stack them quickly. A bricky can do all the walls of a house in three days – you don’t have to wait for it to dry,” says Mr Tijssen.

“Then you render with a breathable lime render or even plasterboard and move in.”

Mr Finch says he was conscious of his Baby Boomer generation’s impact on the planet, and wants to make a positive difference for the next generations.

BEWARE OF PUPPY SCAMS Unscrupulous backyard breeders cashing in on huge demand for certain dog breeds. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

T

he president of Dogs Queensland is urging prospective buyers to be wary of puppy scams and ‘backyard breeders’ as prices soar.

There’s been a high demand for pets around Australia and Ulla Greenwood warns buyers to be wary.

“Dogs have been popular over this period of COVID, when people have been more confined,” she says. “And the price increase has happened because it’s a marketplace situation…There are ridiculous prices out there.”

She says some puppies are selling for more than $10,000 and estimates the starting price for a French bulldog is $3000.

“If someone is asking for more than $4000 for a puppy the (potential) buyer should get in touch with Dogs Queensland and get some advice,” she says.

“It’s a real case of buyers beware and it’s important they do their research. It’s an important decision adding a puppy to your household. It’s a long-term commitment to get the right puppy for your situation.”

Mrs Greenwood warns of puppy scammers, taking advantage of desperate buyers. “The puppies some people are advertising are non-existent,” she says.

“People are paying good money for them … sight unseen.”

She says scams were up five-fold in 2020, from 2019.

“It’s been hard for people to source a puppy (during COVID) so scamsters lift a photo of a puppy from the internet and put it forward as a puppy they are selling.”

Mrs Greenwood says one recent example is a woman in Victoria who was about to buy a poodle from someone in Tasmania, for more than $3000. The breeder said the dog would be flown across the strait with Jetstar. The buyer realised

she was being scammed after it was pointed out to her that dogs can’t travel with that airline carrier.

Mrs Greenwood also warns of backyard breeders and puppy farms.

“There’s real concern for the lack of thought that’s gone into the breeding of the litters,” she says. “It’s really important for buyers to go to the property where the litter of puppies is, ideally meet the father and mother and see what the set-up is.”

Dogs Queensland breeders registered 300 more litters of puppies in 2020 compared to 2019.

TESTING TIMES FOR LEARNER DRIVERS Learner drivers are advised that booking driving tests early will cut down an extended timeline. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

C

OVID has put the brakes on the next generation of Sunshine Coast drivers, with instructors reporting massive backlogs and people waiting five weeks for tests.

The pandemic essentially brought the industry to a standstill for nine weeks in mid-2020 and they’ve been playing catch-up ever since.

“There is a backlog,” Caloundra instructor Mick West says.

“You’re looking at a five-week wait for the next available tests, not just on the Coast, but right across Queensland.

“In Ipswich the next available test is on March 4, that’s how far behind they are.”

Mr West says the average wait time at Caloundra had extended from seven to 10 days previously, to four to five weeks.

“They had to reschedule all those tests (from last year) and a lot of the people who were in the bubble wanted to book tests as well, so the consequence is it’s blown the wait times out.”

Mr West recognised the lengthy delays were frustrating prospective drivers.

“It catches a lot of people on the hop because they’ll ring up to book a lesson

and have to wait (longer than usual),” he says.

Mr West believes proceedings will eventually get back to normal.

“I understand the (Queensland) Department of Transport has put on extra resources to help cope with the backlog,” he says.

“They’ll get there but I think it’s going

to take a while.

“You can’t do anything (else) about it.”

He says an extra six examiners were deployed on the Sunshine Coast to help manage the demand.

Examiners undertake about 10 tests a day and Mr West estimates about 450 prospective drivers per examiner could have been backlogged.

“They’re chipping away at it,” he says.

Mr West says learner drivers should book their tests before they finish logging 100 hours, to save some time.

“A lot of people think they can’t book their tests (that early).”

“A lot of them get their lessons towards the end (of their 100 hours) and I ask them if they have booked a test and they tell me they were going to wait until the logbook is done.

“So, I say ‘why not book it now because you’re going to have to wait another month.”

JUDGE SLAMS DOOR ON 17-BEDROOM ‘HOSTEL’ IN ‘BURBS The owner of a 17-bedroom, 17-bathroom mansion alleged to have been operating as a de facto hostel in an exclusive Sunshine Coast suburb has been found guilty of development offences and slapped with a range of enforcement orders.

In 2019, neighbours of 9 Fortitude Place, Birtinya, complained that their waterfront enclave had been overrun by cars and people coming and going from a three-storey property, built in late 2018. Sunshine Coast Council, acting on the complaints, launched court action against owner Michael Gavin. Planning and Environment Court Judge Glen Cash QC has delivered his judgement.

Judge Cash found the owners had contravened regulations by using the building as an “accommodation building’’ in a residential zone where this was not permitted.

He said the building had three storeys, 17 bedrooms – each with their own ensuite bathroom – capacity for a kitchen on each floor, and provision for separate electrical and water metering for each bedroom.

Court documents detail allegations the owner advertised rooms on well-known real estate websites with descriptions such as, ‘Private room with ensuite’, ‘Furnished room with ensuite in share house’, and ‘1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment’. The rent was $220 per week and for more than a year from January 2019 to March 2020 the rooms were rented to “a number of persons”.

THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL YOGI When Coolum sound engineer Becky Pell’s career stalled during lockdown, she wrote a book about her other love – yoga. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

hen Becky Pell was 12, she went to see Norwegian band A-ha play in her native Manchester and the experience would come to define her life.

She happened to be seated behind the sound engineer and realised there was a whole industry behind the music, and decided she wanted to be part of it. At the age of 16, she enrolled at the School of Audio Engineering in London, catching the train for five hours a day to fulfil her dream and make her mark in what was then, and still largely is, a man’s world.

“I was the only woman in the course and women still only make up seven per cent of the technical side of the music industry,” she says. “I was just so determined. Every obstacle that came up, everybody that told me I was being ridiculous and couldn’t do it, it just added fuel to my fire. I thought, I’ll show you.

“It was challenging for sure. There was nobody else doing what I was doing that looked like me. I had to make it up as I went along and I had to deal with a lot of assumptions. I was met with a lot of

scepticism but there’s no reason at all a woman can’t do that job.”

Ms Pell landed an apprenticeship with a London company, where she cut her teeth in sound engineering. The company had sound installations at Buckingham Palace, so she often went to the palace to do sound for the Queen and Queen Mother. After five years, she branched out on her own as a freelance sound engineer, with her career veering more heavily into the music industry.

She moved to Australia three years ago with her husband, settling in Coolum.

From her base here on the Coast, she has continued her career as a sound engineer, spending six to eight months of the year on tour with various bands.

In her 25 years in the music business, she has worked with Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Muse, Anastacia, Westlife and many other big names. Life came full circle for her when she found herself doing sound for the band that inspired it all – A-ha.

Ms Pell got to know the band “pretty well” during her time working with them.

She also worked with Kylie Minogue for eight years, with Ms Minogue attending her wedding to her husband Chris Pyne, also a sound engineer.

“My husband Chris was Kylie’s front-of-house sound engineer for many years,” she says. “We met on tour with Kylie in 2002. Kylie is an absolutely lovely person; I have nothing but good things to say about her.”

While many succumb to the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle while on tour, Ms Pell instead discovered yoga and after years of passionate practise, trained as a yoga teacher and a registered yoga therapist.

She now spends her time touring internationally, both mixing sound and teaching yoga to bands and artists, and running yoga retreats in exotic locations around the world, from Mexico and Sri Lanka to Spain, Italy and the Greek Isles. On her website she calls herself the ‘rock ‘n’ roll yogi’ and the name couldn’t be more fitting.

“Yoga has brought me to a place of having a little refuge of calm inside myself no matter what’s going on,” she says. “On the road, things can be very high stakes.

“Yoga also gave me a lot of body acceptance; I struggled with eating disorders in my youth. Yoga gave me the missing piece in the puzzle of accepting my body and loving it for what it can do, rather than beating up on myself. It helps me regulate my energy, it helps me cope with life and ride out the ups and downs. It has made my life a better place to be.”

Ms Pell had planned to spend 2020 touring with Irish boy band Westlife, before COVID-19 put a swift end to those plans.

She took the opportunity of extended time at home in Coolum to complete a book she had been working on since 2017.

“When life handed us lockdown, it devastated both the live music and yoga retreat businesses,” she says. “I decided to use the time to finish my book, Yoga Journey – a Contemporary Guide to a Timeless Tradition, which bridges the gap between what the curious class-goer knows and the deeper picture of what yoga is all about.

A book launch is planned for January 31 at Shambhala Yoga Shala in Doonan from 3pm to 5pm. Guests will receive Ms Pell’s restorative yoga session accompanied by readings from the book, followed by a crystal bowl sound healing by Vivianne Barry of Yoga Circle Noosa, and essential oil and acutonics treatments from Lindy Storee Smith of Bloomin Lotus Yoga in Currimundi. CASH REQUIRED FOR THE ROAD AHEAD

TRAFFIC WOES Coast just gets more of what its federal MPs ask for.

Heck, former Liberal federal MPs Peter Slipper and Mal Brough could not get the additional much-needed lanes to and from Brisbane during the last 20 years.

Nothing has changed.

Perhaps the federal government has become too complacent towards voters (and) as displayed at the recent state election, voters realised change was necessary by ensuring a few Sunshine Coast LNP seats swapped into Labor hands, thereby ensuring our voices are hopefully heard at the state level.

Do we need to shake the political tree at a federal level and from Brisbane?

Regarding the Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace article (MWP 29/12/20) ‘Funding for Local Roads Program’, it is concerning that a local LNP Federal MP can beat his government’s drum about much-welcomed minor road improvements when (particularly) over holiday periods thousands of motorists sit in a grid-locked car park heading north that starts at North Lakes until Caloundra, plus if heading southbound from Caloundra until the Gateway turnoff. Mr Wallace, do not expect motorists (voters) to accept this situation for much longer while your federal government asks you to blow smoke in our direction about funding that does not address the major critical pressing issue for Sunshine Coast

commuters to Brisbane and for Brisbane motorists heading towards the Caloundra turn off and beyond.

Most assuredly the road upgrades north of Caloundra are most welcome, however, motorists still sit for many hours in traffic jams heading southbound or northbound between Brisbane and at least the Caloundra turnoff. Reported delays in excess of three hours are not uncommon for the drive from Bald Hills to the Buderim turnoff. This is not acceptable to motorists.

We continue to hear about funding for feasibility studies relating to our stretch of the Brisbane-bound Bruce Highway, but alas, many years later we still wait for those additional lanes while the Gold

I read with horror the growth projections for the Coast’s population (MWP 29/12/20). Having been associated with the Coast since the 1960s, I have seen the once-beautiful, lush green tropical paradise being obliterated by houses, high rises and bitumen. In addition, the traffic congestion, crowded shopping centres and noise have reduced the tranquillity that was our paradise.

What will it look like in 2030 with a population of nearly 440,000 removing any sign of green, open spaces and uncrowded beaches? So much for great Sunshine Coast ‘lifestyle’.

I have just read population growth projections for the Sunshine Coast (MWP 29/12/20). There is much sad news in the world, but for lovers and long-term residents of Caloundra, nothing is quite as depressing as these figures as they show council is still hell-bent on squeezing as many humans into whatever crevices they can find. We’ve watched it for decades and would prefer not to be reminded of it in large print.

Two blatantly obvious factors should deter council: such cramming of residents and tourists erodes human welfare and happiness; and it is all so illogical in so vast a country with so small a population.

I returned from Townsville after spending Christmas there and once again wonder why flights are still not available from our international airport as described by Mayor Mark Jamieson in one of his two columns. The travel to/from Brisbane with the ever-increasing volume of traffic can take longer than the flight time to Townsville! There were two accidents on the way there, so the airport shuttle had to detour twice! On the return journey, the shuttle was delayed by the volume of traffic to Brisbane.

The “more than $2.5 billion worth of projects happening in 2021’’ do not seem to have any connection to increasing traffic. May existing residents please have a clear, understandable explanation of the installation of the international broadband cable, the Blue Heart Biosphere, the Coastal Hazard Adaption Strategy and any other projects that take precedence over transport.

BIG BUCKS FOR BIG TRUCKS Local company awarded quarry contract.

S

unshine Coast Council has awarded an $8.5-million contract to local company Black Cat Civil to support quarry services at Image Flat and Dulong.

The two-year contract provides mobile crushing and screening services.

The contract was awarded following a robust procurement process to achieve the best quality outcome and value-formoney for ratepayers.

Black Cat Civil is a certified member of Supply Nation. The head office is in Nambour and the company works throughout Australia.

Sunshine Coast division 10 councillor David Law says the council supports our growing region through the operation of quarries at Image Flat Road, Image Flat and Sherwell Road, Dulong.

“I am really pleased that a local Nambour company Black Cat Civil has won this competitive contract, it shows that the council’s local procurement policy is really working,” Cr Law says.

“They will be crushing, scalping, blending and screening approximately 350,000 tonnes per annum of rhyolite and basalt shot rock for a variety of sizes and products,” he says.

Cr Law says material extracted from the quarries was available to the construction industry and the general public.

Material is used for a range of purposes including road base, landscaping, drainage material, footpaths, driveways and to prepare a base for construction.

AMAZING LIFE SWAP A former FIFO miner is making the ultimate career change as he swaps life in the mines for a career in medicine.

Brad Lines, a former mines driller, recently graduated with a psychology degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and he is taking his education even further in 2021 after getting into medicine.

The 33-year-old Landsborough father has been accepted into Griffith University’s Doctor of Medicine program at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).

“To get a place in this program is amazing,” he says.

“I didn’t know that a career in medicine was an option for me as a mature-age student without an OP score until I began studying at USC, which helped me identify my strengths and gave me the confidence to pursue the goal of becoming a medical doctor.

“My wife Sam works at SCUH as a nurse and we have family nearby, which will be wonderful for our baby daughter and an essential support for us over the next four years.”

Mr Lines joins two fellow USC 2020 graduates whose paths to postgraduate medicine in 2021 differ from the usual USC Bachelor of Medical Science, linked to the SCUH program.

Biomedical science graduates Theo Mostert, of Glenview, and Rees Telford, of Nambour, plan to move to New South Wales this year after they were accepted into medicine at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Sydney respectively.

While COVID-19 restrictions may delay their travel plans, the 21-year-olds are looking forward to their studies.

“My dad is a doctor and I idolised (science commentator) Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. USC gave me a fantastic foundation, with biomedical science preparing me for medical entry exams and interviews.”

Mr Telford, a graduate of St John’s College Nambour, says he is “stoked” with three offers and keen to learn about all areas of medicine.

“I’ve been working part-time at Noosa Hospital’s emergency department and that’s given me the idea of a career in retrieval medicine (emergency patient response often via helicopter).”

Mr Lines, who attended high schools on the Sunshine Coast and Proserpine, last year earned USC’s top award, the Chancellor’s Medal, for his outstanding voluntary service as well as academic achievement. “I enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) to work to improve people’s mental health in therapeutic settings,” he said.

“I discovered it was possible for me to become a doctor. My undergraduate GPA and my GAMSAT score met the requirements for an interview at Griffith University and everything progressed from there.”

Is my ‘homemade’ will enough?

This is the fifth in our series answering questions about Estate and Probate disputes.

I am often asked whether a ‘homemade Will’ is sufficient to “do the job”. It is a question that troubles me. If: • you prepare it correctly; • the drafting is clear; • it caters for various scenarios; • it has been correctly executed; and • it can actually be located after you die then maybe a homemade Will is sufficient.

Why I am troubled by being asked this question is because people seem oblivious to the consequences of getting it wrong. The days of a ‘simple’ Will are long gone.

An estate plan always involves a consideration of: • how assets are owned; • what obligations are owed to provide for family members; and • a beneficiary dying before you.

Sadly, I have seen all too often the costly consequences of errors where people have tried to do their estate planning without legal advice.

The costs of court applications to fix mistakes far outweigh the ‘savings’ of doing things yourself.

former SAS solider who spent time in combat in Afghanistan is now helping other past and present service personnel break down barriers with a unique wellness and upskilling program.

Maritime Warrior has been set up to give purpose to defence personnel and their families through a series of team-building activities all set on or around the water.

basis with the Reserve forces, Grant Monaghan has spent recent years mentoring and working with soldiers suffering complex medical and mental issues through the Soldier Recovery Centre.

Leading the troops through a range of activities, he began seeing significant positive changes in mindset when they were around the water.

“Taking them on the water, they open up and start communicating,” Mr Monaghan says. “This really planted the seed to create the Maritime Warrior project.”

Beginning on the Gold Coast a year ago, Mr Monaghan and his wife Deb relocated the not-for-profit program to Mooloolaba in late 2020.

“We have an ocean-going yacht where we bring veterans and current serving members into Mooloolaba and do a program,” he says.

“We go down to the beach and do some grounding and then we bring them on the yacht and give them the reigns and assign tasks so they can start to take ownership of the yacht themselves and the different little responsibilities they have to do.”

Mr Monaghan says they do day trips to Caloundra or Mudjimba or overnight trips to Moreton Bay, incorporating team-building exercises and water activities such as stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.

deal with have been affected mentally or physically from their experiences and for many it can be difficult to leave the house.

“They come on not wanting to participate, not engaging and by the time they are on the boat they’re just really engaged and by the end of it they don’t want to get off it,” she says.

So far about 180 people have been through the program. Mr Monaghan has lost friends to suicide, so he knows how important it is to give purpose to troops and their families who often sacrifice so much.

“It builds that all-important purpose; we upskill them and give them a purpose,” he says.

“From a personal perspective, you could say it’s for my own therapy as well.

I want to share those experiences on and educate people.”

lection day is one of many days now made a whole lot easier for Rose ‘Lyle’ Wellington thanks to the expanded Kenilworth Community Transport Service.

The Belli Park resident is one of many

from neighbouring Kenilworth localities who recently gained access to the service, after the council supported an expansion of its catchment area.

“Life has gotten so much easier for my husband and I since we were able to

use this service,” she says. “I’m 86 and my husband is 90 and we love the convenience of being able to book this service to come and pick us up from home and take us to where we need to get to.

“I was delighted when I heard we could use this service because we’d just returned home from voting in Nambour for the state election and we were absolutely exhausted after driving ourselves there.”

Mrs Wellington is not the only resident who has jumped aboard the expanded service.

The number of registered users rose by 40 over the past month with passenger numbers steadily increasing.

The Kenilworth Community Transport Service began operating in June 2019 and was previously available only to residents living within a 6.5-kilometre radius of the Kenilworth Post Office, providing transport to Nambour, Maleny, Mapleton, Eumundi and Yandina for a flat $8 fee one-way or return.

At the request of the community, a submission was put to the council to broaden the catchment area to include Belli Park, Cambroon, Conondale, Coolabine, Eerwah Vale, Gheerulla, Kidaman Creek and Obi Obi as well as trips to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The Kenilworth Community Transport Service is run by volunteers, under the leadership of a sub-committee of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce.

COOLUM CLUB GETS PERFECT PRINTS Coolum Bridge Club recently secured two large prints of local seascapes to help decorate its home at the Yaroomba Meeting Place.

The club’s Patricia Gatt says the images were originally printed in the Coast Care 2021 Calendar and include the artwork Storm Over Yaroomba Beach.

“In conjunction with our second canvas, Dawn at Pincushion Island by Sheryl Wright, the Yaroomba Meeting Place will prove a warm environment for all groups who use this facility,” Ms Gatt says.

Coolum Bridge Club meets Monday mornings, Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. “We are a growing club and always looking for more players.”

MOOLOOLABA ROTARY CLUB ROARING AHEAD Mooloolaba Rotary Club is welcoming new president Graham Lukins as the group gears up for a busy year.

The change of president coincided with the club’s Christmas party in December, with past district governor Bill Dethlefs passing the president’s collar from outgoing president Geoff Hopkins to Mr Lukins.

With the first half of the 2020/2021 Rotary year now complete, Mr Lukins is reflecting on their achievements so far.

“The club has enjoyed a busy first six months of the year including holding a

successful Walk for Mental Health in October and recently running a Christmas trailer raffle at Kawana Shoppingworld, with Currimundi Special School P&C being the major beneficiary,” he says.

“The club is looking forward to a busy six months ahead with events including hosting a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day and, later in the year, the annual A Night to Remember music quiz.”

During the celebrations, past president Charles Godfrey was honoured for his continuing commitment to the community.

GRANTS ARE GREAT FOR SMALL BUSINESS

W

hen other businesses were winding down over Christmas, Marcoola-based uniform manufacturer Seaborne Clothing was ramping up for the back-to-school rush.

The business’s cutting room is currently full of school uniform patterns and blue, gold and maroon chequered cloth as four sewing machines spin round the clock in preparation for the influx.

The process is being helped along thanks to a $19,480 federal government grant to fund energy-efficient sewing machines and an air-conditioning unit.

Seaborne Clothing owner Sean Sharkey says the funding will make a significant difference to their daily operations. “We’ll be putting $10,000 towards the purchase of three industrial sewing machines,” he says.

“The rest will be used to upgrade lighting systems and to retro-fit an air-conditioning unit, which really does make a difference when your busiest time of year coincides with the hottest time of year.

“It’s important to us that we source everything as close to home as possible and use Sunshine Coast tradies too, so that the grant money goes back into the local economy.”

PROBUS CLUB ENDS THE YEAR ON A HIGH The Probus Club of Nambour 90 recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special presentation to the club’s only surviving foundation member.

The club’s Bill MacKenzie says president Ian Pascoe presented a potted orchid to foundation member Keith McKinnon to commemorate the occasion.

“Keith responded by telling us of the need for a second Probus Club and advised that the club took its name from the year in which it was formed, 1990,” Mr MacKenzie says.

The event, held at Buderim Tavern, was also a chance for the club to celebrate Christmas for its last gathering of 2020.

“After a lunch of traditional Christmas fare, the crowd was treated to a feast of entertainment by award-winning magician Nickleby, who had us all spellbound with his fast-paced performance.

“He was followed by singer and entertainer Fortunato, whose repertoire of vintage music from the 1950s to 1970s proved extremely popular for our age group and had us all singing and clapping along. A great way to end the year.”

he Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association was established on September 14, 1974 and became incorporated on November 18, 1988.

The need for a Saturday soccer competition had been seen by various churches for some time, so in mid-1974 representatives from churches were invited to an informal discussion and an association was established.

A general meeting was held on November 15, 1974, with the association covering the region from Caloundra to Cooroy-Noosa.

Recruiting got underway to form two competitions – an under-10 group and an under-13 group – and started with approximately 140 playing members.

Today, the association has more than 3500 junior members and 450 senior male and female players.

It fosters the opportunity for players to play and develop their skills in soccer in a safe, alcohol- and drug-free environment on Friday night and Saturdays.

The association has 19 clubs covering

the entire Sunshine Coast region, from Caloundra to Noosa and west to Nambour and the Range.

Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association is hoping 2021 will be better and brighter than last year, and is celebrating the Year of Community.

There are mixed teams to cater for children aged five to 13, and under-sixes and under-sevens play touch rugby.

Contact rugby is safely introduced at under-eights and minimally contested scrums are introduced at under-10.

n initiative helping children improve their reading skills while surrounded by lovable dogs is looking for new volunteers ahead of the upcoming school year.

Story Dogs began on the Sunshine Coast four years ago and was adopted from a United States program that began in the early 2000s to make reading enjoyable for children.

Patricia Lovell has been part of the program for three years, previously in the role of southern Sunshine Coast co-ordinator, along with her collie spaniel cross, Jemma. “It started off with Jemma being assessed and me doing the training and going to Caloundra State School where children came and read to her,� Ms Lovell says. “When children read to a dog the outcomes are amazing. “They have fun, they are not judged, [their] focus improves, reading skills increase and their confidence soars. “Particularly [for] children who have literacy problems or children who have lost confidence or have mild behavioural problems, it’s wonderful. It’s quite amazing watching them and how they do improve. “Even 20 minutes once a week is incredible. The dogs are just magic; they’re wonderful therapy for people.�

Unfortunately, Story Dogs was put on hold during 2020 and sadly Jemma died in

October. Now Ms Lovell is looking for new volunteers. “With COVID hitting it all stopped; it all came to a grinding holt,� she says. “We lost some of our volunteers and we are trying to get it going again.�

Ms Lovell says she is looking for volunteers with placid dogs who are happy to be around children. “We have lots of labradors as they are incredibly placid.�

W

hat started as a casual coffee catchup turned into 21 years of friendship for Joan Firzgerald.

After being told by a colleague she needed to take time out and socialise with her girlfriends, Ms Fitzgerald’s “coffee girls” group became a weekly event,

growing from three ladies to 12 in the Caloundra area, who have supported each other through the highs and lows of life.“It’s a really nice thing to look forward to every week,” Ms Fitzgerald says.

“I was in business and I had my own company and my finance manager said to me one day, ‘you know you should take a little break and go and have coffee with some friends’ and that’s what started it all off. The other three women that I stared meeting for coffee with had started retiring or had flexible jobs.

“As the years went on, we just kept meeting and some other people came and joined us that we’d met later on and we just celebrate birthdays and Christmas just to give us all a little bit of contact.”

Ms Fitzgerald, who is now retired, says all the ladies have current or previous involvement in charity and community work, something she says creates a “very special” group of people.

“Even though we are not doing as much [charity work] as we used to, it is still there. [The ladies] are all supportive of anything we do in fundraising so if we’re selling raffle tickets or we’ve got a function they put they hands up to help out.”

Ms Fitzgerald is hoping her group of coffee girls will continue meeting as long as they can.

HISTORIANS GET A BOOST WITH LOCAL GROUP’S NEW SPACE NOW OPEN

aloundra Family History Research is beginning 2021 after officially opening a new outdoor deck space at the group’s research rooms.

Patrons Judy and Mark McArdle and club president Valerie Thornton cut the

ribbon to open the space at the group’s Sunshine Coast Turf Club venue, allowing them to adapt to the new social distancing norm.

“With increasing membership, our research group needed more outdoor space for members attending general

meetings in the future,” the club’s Judy Matulick says.

“The need for social distancing will still be a requirement and the new outdoor space will allow members to meet safely, particularly when we can all enjoy meeting for afternoon tea.”

Ms Matulick says the group has been busy preparing for the year ahead, with Dr Hilda Maclean scheduled in as the guest speaker for the first general meeting on January 21. “Dr Maclean is a researcher, genealogist, author and her topic [is] death, burial and mourning practices from the Victorian era onwards in Australia and overseas, especially the UK. “At our general meeting on [February 18] we will welcome our second guest speaker for the year, Matthew Wengert who is a historian and author.

“In 2016 Matthew Wengert co-curated an exhibition of Indigenous ceramics at the State Library of Queensland, and in 2017 he managed the ReFire Pottery project at Cherbourg’s Ration Shed Museum, re-introducing this art form 30 years after the original Barambah Pottery closed.

“He is a 2018 Griffith Review fellow and co-winner of the 2019 SLQ John Oxley Library Fellowship.”

Ms Matulick says his topic is designs, details, devils: a visual history of Queensland’s government printing office 1862 to 2013.

POLICE BRIEFS Police across the Beerwah, Caloundra and Kawana Waters district responded to nearly 400 offences during the December and New Year period.

Data from the Queensland Police Service Online Crime Map reveals from December 6, 2020 to January 5, 2021 officers recorded 380 incidents, with 105 of those for theft charges.

There were 52 drug offences recorded and 40 break and enters with peak crime times at 3pm, 10pm and midnight.

The Caloundra police district recorded 180 of the total offences, with 44 of those drug related. Beerwah recorded the most theft, with 37 offences. It comes as police dealt with several incidents in the Landsborough area in early January. On January 6, Caloundra detectives arrested a man after he became trapped inside a roof cavity during the alleged break and enter of a Landsborough hotel.

Meanwhile on January 4 a 22-year-old man was stabbed repeatedly after being confronted by a group known to him while walking along Tiverton Place in Landsborough. * * * Beerwah police are hoping to find the owners of several rings found across the region over the past 18 months. A statement from Beerwah police says the rings are of varying value and all appear to be well worn. “They may have been inadvertently dropped by the owner or possibly discarded after being stolen.”

WINDANDSEA TO GET A CLUBHOUSE

A

fter an eight-year battle, Caloundra based WindanSea Surf Club will soon have a new clubhouse with the Planning and Environment Court approving an application to build a new community venue in Currimundi.

Club chairman Don Smith says the result is a terrific boost for local youths, club members and the wider public who now have a base where they can pursue their passion for surfing and other community activities.

“Over 50 per cent of the club’s membership is juniors with women and girls representing a growing 20 per cent of total membership,” Mr Smith says.

“A further 30 per cent are males aged over 18 so we have a strong young membership base.”

Club president Terry Landsberg says the 178-square metre clubhouse will be available to several community groups including the Caloundra Malibu Club, Moffateers, Indigenous Surfing, Disabled Surfing and two neighbouring schools.

“We now have a place where a range of community groups can meet and grow and there will also be opportunities for small operators to run low-impact classes

The clubhouse will be constructed near the WindanSea home surf break at Anne

NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL Construction of a $75 million primary school in fast-growing Aura will soon be underway after the state government announced the successful contractor for the project.

Education Minister Grace Grace revealed Queensland’s family owned FKG Group as the successful contractor to build the first stage of the primary school at Caloundra South, expected to open in January 2022.

“The school will be located at the corner of Park Avenue and Nirimba Drive in the Aura Development precinct, supporting the existing Baringa State Primary School and Baringa State Secondary College (opening in 2021),” Ms Grace says.

Stage one will include an administration block, library, covered area and kiosk, prep learning areas, junior learning areas, sports as well as music and assembly space.

The Caloundra South school is one of three announced across Queensland.

“It’s very exciting to announce that we’re moving ahead with the construction of these new schools with the first sods to be turned in early 2021,” Ms Grace says.

“More than $198 million (GST inclusive) has been invested into building stage one of the schools, supporting a combined total of 600 construction jobs.”

FKG Group managing director Nick Gardner says the team is excited to be taking on the Aura project.

So it’s got him thinking about the way he treated his mum when she was hard of hearing.

Sami Muirhead is enjoying the last days of her summer holiday and trying not to think too much about the cleaning.

When I was a child my mother Edna had poor hearing and my dear brother and I used to make smart arse comments sometimes as she walked off knowing that if she wasn’t looking at us we were a pretty safe chance of getting away with it. That was until she had an implant in the early 1960s that fixed her hearing to the point that Edna could hear the proverbial pin drop, which caused me great suffering as a child until the strap, the chord, the tree branch around the rear end eventually convinced me that I had to be careful with my mouth. I know some of you will find this hard to believe but my speedboat mouth and tugboat brain eventually figured out that if I got into trouble the best bet was to shut up and do what I was told.

I never inherited much of Edna’s good stuff – her kind and caring nature, her positivity, her ability to cook or her radar-like eyesight – but I did get her abruptness and loss of hearing.

Coincidently, these days I am only deaf in our house, according to the ruler of my

This is the same caring person that worked with elderly and I was constantly told how wonderful and considerate she was by her clients.

Now I have always said that if I was going to lose a sense it would be hearing and even though I am constantly encouraged to get a hearing aid I keep losing the number.

re you soaking up the days of the fresh year before reality and normality kicks in for 2021? Every day at our house is spent trying to read, watch TV, walk the dogs and just generally faffing about.

I have always been talented at faffing and my children seemed to have inherited this ability to just stay home and nest.

Sunset is punctuated by happy hour at the beach and we all stay up late watching TV. Holiday bliss. I mean, it is not all perfect families as there is also that sinking feeling that busy is about to come knocking at my door and it is time to stop pretending we are on a Contiki tour.

I have done some spring cleaning but trying to clean out our rooms puts me in the foulest of moods. I feel quite overwhelmed at the mere sight of my messy house. My local cafe barista told me we need a family cleaning soundtrack as to this day when she hears Fleetwood Mac it reminds her of her mum, as that was the background music that was always on as the family cleaned their house. I have always been a bit of a Pink or Robbie Williams house cleaning music gal but my

kids prefer novelty songs, and do not even get me started on my husband as his choice in heavy metal turns my foul mood into an even darker one quicker than I can throw out the odd socks and dead cockroaches.

Spotify has released a list of the 25 most popular songs to clean the house to according to users. Uptown Funk and Bad Guy are on the list with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Sweet Home Alabama, and Livin’ On A Prayer.

I did manage to put off cleaning by compiling a new list of my own songs, but it still did not inspire me to scrub and tidy the way the reward of a gin and tonic at the beach seduces me. One friend (yes, you, Caroline) even wipes her electrical cords when she cleans her home. Since I found out about this, I cannot help but notice my electrical cords are very dusty. Another friend loves spending Friday night cleaning and baking. This friend uses a mop dipped in bleach to wash her walls and glass cleaner to make her kettle sparkle.

This shall never be me, and for now I am enjoying the dying days of the Coast Contiki holiday.

BUILDING TRUST: THE ULTIMATE ADVANTAGE As leaders and in business, especially in these uncertain times, we are always looking for a competitive advantage to keep us one step ahead.

Is there a secret sauce that can propel us forward? US business leader and bestselling author Patrick Lencioni writes in his book, Advantage: “Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”

I recently watched The Queen’s Gambit and there was a scene that really impacted me that made real, the conversation around winning and if it was a result of collaboration or competition? I wonder what helped the main character win? Was it her solitude or was it when she trusted the team to contribute to her success? Was it when she finally let go of the fear and allowed others into her protected world?

When we are really challenged as leaders and as a community, do we stand together or alone?

I have had many moments as a leader

that challenged my ethos of teamwork, however I know with absolute certainty after 25-plus years of leading others that without trust as a leader or as a business owner, you will not be able to move through to courageous conversations, building a truly committed team, being able to hold your people accountable or the ultimate goal – delivering results.

The foundation of this teamwork model is trust; it is the basis on which all success is built. As leadership guru Stephen Covey says: “Trust is the glue of life.”

So how do we build trust? Cue celebrated researcher, speaker and author Brené Brown, who addresses the issue by breaking it down into the anatomy of trust, in a process she calls ‘braving’.

For Brown, trust is formed through the essential elements of: Boundaries, Reliability, Accountability, Vault, Integrity, Non-Judgement, and Generosity.

Trust to me is choosing to make a part of who I am or what I believe vulnerable to the actions of someone else. It’s saying as a leader that I made a mistake and taking accountability. It’s keeping a promise, it’s courageously standing by what I believe to be right and it’s accepting everyone for who they are and what they bring. Most of all, it’s giving back to a community and people that I love and respect.

What if the ability to build trust is the foundation of all we want to achieve in business and in life? Can you be brave and vulnerable enough to trust enough so you can be trusted?

Let’s challenge ourselves to earn our leadership through building trust every day out of respect for those who are following us.

space – unheard of before this summer’s staycation. So high are the numbers waterside that some think they are off the hook in looking after their children, figuring they can just loll and lounge because the herd will rally if the kid gets into dire straits.

In public areas, some groups seem to occupy an inordinate amount of space, with the volume turned to full-blast in conversations or the air turning blue regardless of tender young or old ears nearby. Others use a free barbecue, but prep their food so that the adjoining one is also occupied.

The roads are choked and the carparks stuffed with creeping, circling predators, ready with a rev and a squeal of a tyre to descend on a vacant spot. There is a wave of bad parking, poor indicating and indecision.

My gym has also gained a few space stealers. One young gal uses an app to work through her routine, prepping a large space on the floor, another in the free weights area and a third at one of the machines. She moves between them, taking up three times the space of others, and scowling and sighing if anyone impinges on her multiple setups to complete their own workouts.

A few days ago, a bloke rocked up and worked out shirtless, as if his tattoos meant skin was an acceptable stand-in for fabric.

And on a warm morning too. Ew. Too little clothing can sometimes take up too much of the visual amenity.

Perhaps in this new year, instead of stretching out, making noise and taking up too much room, people could note something 19th century American poet and journalist Walt Whitman wrote: Some people are so much sunshine to the square inch. They are the kind of space stealers we need more of.

SPACE STEALERS RUN RAMPANT Some people sure take up a lot of space. I don’t mean physical space with their bodies, although huge numbers laid down an extra layer or two of insulation during last year’s COVID-19 lockdown. Pandemic weight gain: it’s definitely a thing.

No – I mean those who steal space beyond themselves, who seem oblivious to others as they encroach and crowd, taking room, air and joy.

It is said that people either take up space or add to it. There is little in between and the former is trumping the latter this holiday season.

You would think that during COVID we might have learnt that distancing was more than just a public health requirement. We had to pull together as we stayed apart, offering respect as well as space. But this Christmas/New Year break, the lessons seem forgotten.

The beaches are bulging in ways not seen before as everyone is forced to holiday at home. Real estate on the sand is at a premium on a warm day, with squatters laying claim the moment an occupant slips off for a cooling dip.

FOSTERING THE HIGH-TECH WORKERS OF THE FUTURE An innovative digital technologies program is helping Australian students get ahead of the game.

S

chool students can learn how to crack a code, build Lego using algorithms, create a virtual pet, and write a computer program under an innovative initiative aimed at fostering the cyber-security workers of the future.

In 2020, the Australian Government invested more than $9 million in Australian Digital Technologies Challenges, which provides free online activities for students in Years 3 to 8.

A series of online activities are available to boost student skills in digital technologies (DT) including coding and data interpretation. The content is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies and the ICT general capability.

The initiative is delivered to schools across the country by the Australian Computing Academy (ACA) at the University of Sydney. The ACA also offers Dive into Code, providing a suite of fun and engaging coding activities for students in Years 3 to 12.

Dr. James Curran, associate professor for the Australian Computing Academy, at the University of Sydney, says learning about digital technologies is an increasingly

important skill.

“Nearly every aspect of our lives has been remade, and is continuing to be remade, by digital technologies. Ask a taxi driver how they feel about technology now versus five years ago before Uber started taking over,” Dr Curran says.

“Almost every industry is changing. Do we want Australian children to be in charge of the change or do we want them just to be inheriting the changes that other people elsewhere in the world think is the direction we should be going?”

The Digital Technologies (DT)

Challenges and activities are freely available to students in Years 3 to 8 and all teachers in Australian schools. Students can start a series of activities that are specifically targeted at the student’s year level, including algorithms, coding, data representation and data interpretation. As at June 2020, there were 377,000 students enrolled in one or more DT Challenges.

The activities are designed to be fun and become progressively harder as a student progresses. An automated marking system provides the student with immediate, intelligent feedback.

In addition to the DT Challenges, the ACA has also introduced the Schools Cyber Security Challenges for students in Years 7 to 12. These classroom-ready challenges provide high school teachers with resources to support the teaching of cyber security concepts, and to inform students of career opportunities in the field.

Dr Curran says the program has been a great success.

“So far, we’ve had 100,000 enrolments in these cyber security challenges that do two things — teach kids cyber security skills and knowledge, and also give kids an awareness of what career opportunities there are in cyber security,” Dr. Curran said.

The ACA has worked hard to deliver resources to students and teachers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, they added functionality to the website to enable teachers to follow students’ work while they were at home, replicating a ‘real-life’ classroom environment.

“Teachers are able to see a student’s progression, whether they are trying to solve a particular question and whether they appeared to be stuck. The teacher can then message that student and help them.”

CHEAP DEBT TIPS TO GET YOU INTO THE MARKET Talk with a mortgage broker about available options to benefit you. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

C

heap money, improved home values, a multitude of loan options, the extended Homebuilder program and increasing job opportunities are driving up home loan applications.

SMS Finance director Brenden Brial says most borrowers are managing to maintain their home loan repayments.

“With interest rates where they are, a lot of them are paying down debt quicker,” he adds.

Others are taking advantage of the ultra-low interest rates to take on debt to purchase a new home, upgrade to a larger home or tap into the increased value of their home, which is giving them more equity to draw against for renovations.

“A lot of people are finding they can keep their repayments the same but still get some money out for a pool or an extra bathroom or bedroom,” he adds.

When it comes to new or revised borrowing, rather than automatically sticking with one of the four big banks,

Mr Brial recommends borrowers should talk to a mortgage broker about the options and look at the borrower’s individual needs.

He also says there are lenders who don’t have shopfronts, but still have cheap interest rates.

“Some of the bells and whistles on those products may not suit everybody,” he says.

“With interest rates so low, a family with a disposable income could benefit from accelerated repayments, re-draw offset; those types of things which can really save them a lot of interest.”

While Australian financial institutions aren’t offering the Danish model of a 20-year loan at a fixed rate of zero, Mr Brial says more people are looking at switching from variable to fixed rate loans

as some fixed rates are under two per cent.

“Fixed rates are limited,” he counsels.

“They have break costs if you want to get out of them during the term.”

Mr Brial prefers to talk to his clients about whether a fixed rate will suit a client or whether part-fixed and part-variable is more suitable.

When time is of the essence, turnaround time can be critical in the current market.

Mr Brial says several of the big banks are being hampered by the volume of loan applications.

He suggests mortgage brokers can help borrowers with finding a timely solution and one that is suitable to their individual needs.

Mr Brial also notes that banks are being cautious generally and for some people, banks are asking for more information than they have previously sought if borrowers are employed in industries hard hit by the pandemic.
