From the editor Please meet Sarah Wilson, the former journalist, TV presenter, author and activist who wrote the New York Times bestsellers I Quit Sugar and First, We Make the Beast Beautiful. Ms Wilson is this month’s guest speaker at Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network monthly meeting. Deputy editor Leigh Robshaw had a chat with the former editor of Cosmopolitan Australia and has written a story that engages us with the relaxed side of, well let’s face it, a superwoman. If you haven’t met Ms Wilson, then I wouldn’t be at all surprised if after reading this story you join with her digital audience of 2.5 million.

Queensland’s famed Mary Valley Rattler steam train has gone out of its way to make access available to everyone, and is now extending the commitment further by introducing a new Pets On Board service, allowing passengers to share the experience with their favourite four-legged friend. BUDERIM FORESTS

The giant red cedars of Australia grew up to 60 metres tall with girths of up to 11.5 metres recorded – literally towering over surrounding trees – usually entangled in vines, which had to be cut away before the trees could be felled. The largest recorded red cedar tree felled in Australia was in 1883. It came from the Nulla Nulla Creek in the Upper Macleay, New South Wales, producing a whopping 240 cubic metres of timber.

In 1862, Tom Petrie set out from Brisbane with 25 Turrbal and Kabi Kabi men including Billy Dingy and Wanangga to search for cedar in the Maroochy area. They ascended Buderim mountain where they saw forests of fine timber. Buderim was seen as a resource for timbergetters, as huge stands of beech and red cedar grew across the mountain. Once clear felled, the plateau was used for farming.

The rich red volcanic soil found on Buderim made the area particularly suited to growing almost everything, from bananas to small crops. The most notable were coffee and (in the 20th century) ginger, the crop that made Buderim famous.

Call of the wild Former journalist, I Quit Sugar founder and author Sarah Wilson is on a mission to save our planet. My Weekly Preview spoke with this extraordinary woman, ahead of her visit to the Coast.

arah Wilson has travelled the world extensively and describes herself as a nomad. But one place she hasn’t spent much time is here on the Sunshine Coast.

The first thing she asks me when we begin our interview isn’t where are the best restaurants or the best boutiques or the best coffee. It’s where are the best hikes? Wherever she goes, she tries to fit in a hike. I tell her about Kondalilla, Mapleton Falls, Noosa National Park and the Glass House Mountains and she’s all ears. She’s not paying lip service; she’s listening intently.

Later, when I shoot her an email with more details, she replies immediately, thanking me. After years interviewing celebrities and high-profile people, your radar for the authentic and inauthentic becomes well-honed. Sarah Wilson is as authentic as they come.

The author, journalist, speaker and I Quit Sugar identity is visiting the Coast for a much-anticipated keynote presentation at the newly minted NightQuarter on November 12. Previously the editor of Cosmopolitan Australia and host of MasterChef Australia, she wrote the book I Quit Sugar and then built it into a wellness empire before famously closing the business in May 2018 and donating all the money she made selling the business assets to charity. Ms Wilson does not do business like other people.

She has now followed it up with a modern manifesto for our times, This One Wild and Precious Life: A Hopeful Path Forward in a Fractured World. With COVID having turned the world upside down this year, forcing many of us to reassess the way we live, work and run our businesses, Ms Wilson’s book, released in September, couldn’t be

more timely. It speaks to the big issues of our time: climate change, political turbulence, loneliness, racial injustice, inequality, apathy and disconnection.

Who are we? Why do many of us feel so disconnected and dissatisfied? Is there more to life than working and consuming while we steadily destroy our planet?

“COVID has been a massive pause,” she tells My Weekly Preview. “That’s one positive repercussion. I have a sneaking feeling we weren’t paying attention. At a cultural level, we got to pause and say, hang on, is this what we want? At a biological level, nature got a break. We saw animals roaming the streets in Venice and Japan. This rat race is not what makes us happy. Right now is the moment for us to go, what values do we want our lives to be led by?”

If 2020 has given us anything, it is time. Time to reflect, to reassess where we’re at in our lives. To question our values around work, business, family and health. Nowhere have we felt more of a shake-up than in our work lives.

Businesses have had to sink or swim and those still operating have had to change the way they do things.

Ms Wilson is an advocate of values-based business, a way of doing business that makes it about more than just the bottom line. Having built I Quit Sugar into a colossal movement, she could have ridden high on a wave of

business success indefinitely. So why did she let it all go?

“I’d made a commitment to myself that I’d never get caught up on a conveyer belt,” she says. “I got very sick. I had a five-year plan with my accountant to reach a point where I could live off the minimum wage for the rest of my life until I’m 94. I set myself up financially and it was five years to the week that I shut it down.

“I decided I wasn’t just going to keep doing stuff to leverage and make money.

My aim was to experiment, to give people tools and shift the dial. Anything above that was just making money and that’s not what I was put on the planet to do. I set about trying to sell it and it took a year of being tyre-kicked.”

Ms Wilson now spends her time engaged in public speaking and working for charities like World Bicycle Relief, which gives bicycles to children in Africa so they can go to school. As a speaker, she’s often asked by banks and insurance companies to talk on how to live a life not based on money. The irony, she says, isn’t lost on her.

She lives a minimalist lifestyle, rides a vintage bike, has lived in the same pair of green shorts for years and hates wasting food. While many celebrities take to social media with virtue-signalling posts about their latest causes, Ms Wilson is walking the talk and doesn’t hesitate to myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY confront other celebrities and even complete strangers when she sees them committing environmental sins, for example, drinking out of single-use cups.

“There’s a lot of greenwashing and a lot of people aren’t practising what they preach,” she says. “It drives me mental. I call them out. If I see a TV celebrity championing a climate cause, I say, ‘hey, we’re going to have to get you onto reusable coffee cups’.”

In This One Wild and Precious Life, she writes about her despair at how little people seem to care about the issues she cares so deeply about – namely, our carelessness towards the planet. In her impeccably researched book, she shares some hard-hitting realities. By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Our hunger for cheap, disposable fashion means the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050. “What’s the point?” she writes. “Nobody’s doing anything.”

In our interview, she does concede that more people are waking up to the effects of rampant consumerism on our planet and that she can’t expect everyone to care as much as she does.

“I think people are starting to feel a bit grubby when they come home from a mall with a whole heap of shopping bags,” she says. “People need to realise how much they’ve been manipulated into consuming by big multinationals.

We become trapped in it and we believe there is no alternative.

“My meditation teacher had a coffee with me and said, ‘Sarah, you are caught up in all this negative stuff. The thing is, you really love living this way. You don’t find it a sacrifice. You love minimalism.

You love riding your bike and eating your scraps. What you need to do is show us the charm, make it more charming than the status quo.’ I went, ‘oh god, that’s the missing bit’.”

If she sounds intense, she is. She’s also passionate, humble and fiercely intelligent. Her book doesn’t just point the finger at what’s gone wrong in our

world, it also offers genuine solutions.

“Unlike previous crises in history where we could point to an enemy, for example with the world wars, this time around with the crisis we face, we have this icky feeling that we are the victim and the perpetrator. The argument I make is all the solutions exist for the climate crisis. The technology, the innovation. It exists in various forms around the planet. What we need is collective will. It’s not one leader coming out and saying X, Y, Z. It requires the collective imagination to take off.

Ms Wilson’s deepest wish is that her book will encourage us to love our planet, because as the saying goes, we fight to save what we love. She argues – backed by the greats of science and philosophy – that we need to be in nature to return to our true nature. To love it wildly, so that we will fight for it. SW: Pema Chodron says start where you are. It is your moment, it is your positioning. Rather than trying to change the world or start some climate movement, if you’ve got a small business, perhaps a catering company, maybe switch to non-disposables. Remove food waste.

That becomes a charming, sexy thing.

MWP: What do you think the future holds?

Sarah Wilson: The world is going to look different. One of the things we’re going to have to rally around is an idea of resilience.

We’ve become a culture horribly unable to deal with change and the unknown and uncertainty. We’ve cocooned ourselves from it. We’ve got some of the most uncertain times ahead of us ever to be experienced in human history. I would say we need to start developing resilience in children and ourselves. We are going to have to get used to discomfort around change. This has always been an adage of mine. If you can accept something is uncomfortable as an inevitability, it becomes less uncomfortable.

MWP: What’s your advice to people in business moving forward?

SW: At the moment, everybody is questioning their business models due to COVID. Everybody is concerned and the principal I talk about a fair bit now is, how can I make a difference? You want to know you can use your business to be part of this next thing moving forward. There are

MWP: What’s your greatest hope for the world?

SW: Viktor Frankl said humans can deal with incredible hardship. What we can’t deal with is lack of meaning. We have to accept we have hardship coming our way.

We have to get resilient and develop a radical values system. Part two is we will need to start to think about our sense of purpose being geared towards being of service, to each other, the community and the broader good and life in general. That switch, in itself, I believe will save us. It has the best chance of saving the planet and our lives on the planet. It will ensure we will be able to survive as humans, when we’ve got meaning and we can rally around it.

EUMUNDI BREWERY CREATES A RUM-BEER Craft beer and rum lovers have reason to cheer with Eumundi Brewery and Bundaberg Rum Distillery collaborating to release a “very Queensland” beer.

Eumundi Brewery head brewer Chris Sheehan says Eu-Bundy IPA is a limited release special batch brew. “It’s a classic IPA with an assertive yet balanced bitterness and light malt body, and a hearty helping of Bundaberg Small Batch Spiced Rum,” Mr Sheehan says. “The rum, with its sweet dried spice nose of cinnamon and clove pair perfectly with the citrus nose from a heavy load of Citra hops, all finished off with a gentle addition of local ginger from both Bundaberg and Eumundi. While beer and rum are from very different drink spheres, we wanted to create some magic by bringing the two together in one glass.” The beer will be on tap from mid-November at several venues across Queensland. A limited number of cans will also be available for sale from the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and The Imperial Hotel Eumundi from November 15.

A COVID NO SHOW This year’s New Year’s Eve event at Mooloolaba has been cancelled. It comes as Sunshine Coast Council and event partners decide to keep community safety top of mind, with the event usually attracting more than 30,000 people annually. Division four councillor Joe Natoli says Mooloolaba hospitality venues will still be open to welcome in 2021, and is encouraging locals wishing to head out to book a spot and support businesses. The council is currently seeking advice from Queensland Health in relation to possible opportunities for dispersed fireworks displays at coastal locations, noting community-run New Year’s Eve events in Caloundra and Coolum have also been cancelled.

Fish stocks in the Maroochy River and Pumicestone Passage are set to improve following a federal government habitat restoration project totalling $300,000. The local Fishers for Fish project under the Fisheries Habitat Restoration Program will assist in restoring the health of the region’s coastal and estuarine fisheries habitats. The Fishers for Fish project will include bank stabilisation and mangrove rehabilitation along the Maroochy River canelands, rehabilitation of the Coolum Creek Wetlands and restoration of in-stream shellfish habitat in the Pumicestone Passage and Maroochy estuary.

CLIMBING MOUNT COOLUM FOR PARKINSON’S A team of local trekkers have climbed Mount Coolum to the equivalent height of Mount Everest to raise money for Parkinson’s disease. Gary McKitterick-Gillett (pictured) led the hikers on the 8848-metre Everest Trek for Parkinson’s up Mount Coolum, after having to change their original plans to conquer the world’s tallest peak in October. “The challenge of climbing Mount Coolum 42 times in five days was hard, but nothing compared to caring for or living with someone with Parkinson’s disease,” Mr McKitterick-Gillett says. “We need to thank all of our supporters, sponsors and donors for your help in making the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease a little brighter. Everest for Parkinson’s Trek has raised over $10,000, all of which has gone directly to Australian-based research into finding better treatments for Parkinson’s disease.”

A green sea turtle found stranded in Coolum in July has been released back into the water after teamwork from SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, Coolum Coast Care and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to rescue and rehabilitate the animal. Kake the green sea turtle was found by a surfer at First Bay in Coolum after being hit by a boat. Given Kake’s severe injuries, the turtle required bone cement to help stabilise his shell and after months in intensive care and plenty of love, Kake has pulled through and is ready for life back into the ocean. The rescue, rehabilitation and release of Kake is a reminder of the need for teamwork to help protect and conserve our marine wildlife. Wildlife rescuers and carers are urging boaties to be alert to sea life.

Sunshine Coast Airport has recently launched its inaugural Alliance Airlines service to Canberra. Sunshine Coast Airport chief executive officer Andrew Brodie says the new destination will deliver up to 1600 seats a month and generate more than $3 million for local businesses annually. “For the first time in our history, we now have a direct link to our national capital, which will support key industries including government, agriculture and education, as well as allowing locals to explore Canberra direct from our doorstep,” Mr Brodie says.

The twice-a-week service was made possible through the state government’s $15-million Aviation Recovery Fund.

T

he Hatted Chef’s chef-prepared, heat-and-eat meals are now on sale at all White’s IGA stores.

The idea for the new venture had been brewing in the kitchens at The Dock Mooloolaba since very early in the year when Chris Sell joined as executive chef, but it took on new importance during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“When the restaurant was closed for dining-in because of COVID-19, we wanted to create options for our customers beyond just takeaway and also provide work for our staff,” Mr Sell says.

Mr Sell says while the team was working on the meals, they were talking about all the things they wanted The Hatted Chef to be. “We wanted to offer

great food with the highest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible, but we also wanted to give back to the community beyond just creating jobs, and supporting producers – and that’s when we decided to use the products to support homelessness in our local area,” Chris says “That led us to the incredible work being done by Dr Nova Evans and nurse Sonia Goodwin at Sunny Street, which provides medical care and support for homeless people on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Sell says for every four packs sold, one meal or the equivalent value will be provided to Sunny Street.

Dr Evans says food is a really important part of Sunny Street’s outreach work. “Homeless people need a whole range of support, but they are also vulnerable so for us, food starts a conversation,” she says.

“With The Hatted Chef now providing food, it means we can do so much more.”

Mr Sell says the team is excited to see how The Hatted Chef will be received.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester says mental health first aid and suicide prevention training offers veterans, and the people who support them an opportunity to ‘square away’ their own mental health so they can take care of themselves and those around them.

‘Squared away’ is a military concept where once you have yourself sorted, you are then able to help those around you.

“It’s not too dissimilar with mental health and I am encouraged that more than 1400 members of the veteran community have participated in mental health and suicide prevention training in the last 12 months,” Mr Chester says.

“Family members, friends and colleagues are often the first to notice subtle changes in someone’s behaviour and training in mental health first aid or suicide intervention equips them with the skills and confidence to identify signs, start a conversation and encourage them to seek professional help.

“I would encourage anyone in the ex-service community to become a mental health first aider and join our national network by contacting Open Arms and participating in the training.”

In addition to mental health first aid, Open Arms provides suicide prevention training including the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Suicide alertness for everyone (safeTALK), and Suicide Prevention Start, a 60- to 90-minute self-paced online workshop.

CONSULTATION OPEN FOR PLANNING SCHEME AMENDMENTS Community consultation is now underway for proposed amendments to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014 and Planning Scheme Policies.

The proposed planning scheme amendment relates to additional South East Queensland Regional Plan 2017 (SEQRP) sites and other zoning matters.

The amendment is proposing to change the zoning and local plan area boundaries for specific sites located at Bli Bli, Chevallum, Forest Glen, Landsborough and Yandina.

The proposal is in response to changes to the Urban Footprint under the SEQRP and to better reflect existing development approvals or desired future land uses.

Further details on the specific sites subject to the proposed planning scheme amendment can be found in the following information sheets relating to Bli Bli; Chevallum and Forest Glen; Landsborough; and Yandina.

The proposed amendment to the Planning Scheme Policy for Development Works updates the standards, specifications and procedures to guide the design, construction and delivery of infrastructure and works associated with new

usiness confidence in the Sunshine Coast region increased in the September quarter, but the long-term outlook remains blurred by uncertainty, especially as stimulus support begins to taper off.

The latest Suncorp-CCIQ Pulse Survey of Business Conditions, a quarterly survey conducted to give a snapshot of business conditions in Queensland, found that while there was some recovery, the economy is stalled due to ongoing restrictions.

TOURISM FIJI CHIEF APPOINTED CEO OF VISIT SUNSHINE COAST

Current chief executive officer of Tourism Fiji, Matt Stoeckel, will swap one idyllic destination for another at the end of the year following his appointment as chief executive officer of Visit Sunshine Coast.

Mr Stoeckel – who has been in the CEO role at Tourism Fiji since 2016 – will start his new tourism role at the beginning of 2021.

He will take over from Craig Davidson, who has been Interim CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast since June 2020.

Prior to taking up his role at Tourism Fiji, Mr Stoeckel had spent two years with Destination NSW, following several years working for the Swire Group and in tourism consultancy roles with TRC Tourism and Hyder Consulting.

In his consultancy role he worked with Fiji’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to develop the Fiji Tourism Development Plan 2014-2020, which he was then able to put into action as CEO of Tourism Fiji, including rolling out a new brand marketing campaign in 2019, which aimed to diversify the country’s tourism assets beyond its reputation for relaxation and family holidays.

Art on the edge Hinterland artist Miles Allen is one of the artists exhibiting at Sculpture on the Edge, the region’s much-loved outdoor sculpture prize. My Weekly Preview spoke to the artist about his inspirations.

A

n upside-down tree is a fitting symbol for the world we’ve found ourselves in this year. But perched in the tree are eight colourful birds, lending a sense of optimism and joy. This artwork is Flaxton artist Miles Allen’s entry for this year’s Sculpture on the Edge exhibition, which has been attracting artists and visitors to Spicers Tamarind in Maleny for 10 years.

Mr Allen, who won the competition for best sculpture in 2015, says artists play an important role in our community, even more so when we find ourselves despairing about the state of the world.

“I think the role of artists is grossly underestimated in bringing joy to people, to raising questions, to answering questions, to provoking things,” he says.

“Many people around here go to galleries

and just get enjoyment by looking and not necessarily buying. Very few people haven’t interacted with art in one form or another.”

While Mr Allen doesn’t describe himself as an environmental activist, he makes a statement nonetheless about our natural world through his art. Formerly a painter, he turned to sculpture around 10 years ago and predominantly works with found objects. The challenge is to create something beautiful and thoughtprovoking from the discarded and unloved.

“I use things that people throw away, things that would end up in landfill…

Although me taking things that would have gone to landfill has a very small impact on that landfill, hopefully I’m getting people to think do we need all this stuff? Do we need to buy all these things? Can we reuse what’s already there can we convert things?”

Mr Allen has boxes full of found objects beneath his home just waiting to become pieces of art, which often prompts people to ask why he has so much junk.

“I say I don’t really know, but I like them. I like the shape of them and maybe one day I can do something with them. I’ve got to be able to see some sort of beauty in it, some possibilities in it.”

A dead lilly pilly on his property has become the foundation of his piece for Sculpture on the Edge. “We had to remove it from our garden because the roots were in danger of getting into the water tank, but not wanting to throw anything away, I wondered how I could use it. I decided to hang it upside down to signify the upside down world we’re living in at the moment.

It’s a comment on that and a comment on loss of predictability. We’ve been living in

this world that’s fairly predictable.

We take for granted – or have taken for granted – a lot of things. We expand our buildings, industry, shops and then something like COVID comes along and we have to rethink much of what we have taken for granted.”

The rosellas in his garden inspired him to create colourful bird sculptures out of brightly coloured wool, which stands out in the dead tree.

“Something I noticed with COVID is I started walking through Mapleton Forest a lot more and everywhere was quieter. There were a lot more birds and we’ve had a lot more birds in the garden… I think they probably enjoyed COVID more than we did – less traffic, less pollution.”

An artist for 23 years, Mr Allen worked in education and training until he decided to devote himself full-time to his art nine years ago. “I took the plunge and have never regretted it,” he says.

Mr Allen says Sculpture on the Edge is a great opportunity for artists to get their work into the public eye and get feedback.

“It’s interesting to talk to people and see what they see in a work,” he says. “To a certain extent, as an artist you work in your own little bubble, you try and imagine what people think but can’t do that accurately, so it’s really good to get feedback.”

THE IPHONE 12 IS COMING The new iPhone is out soon, and with its 5G compatability, it’s a game-changer. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

he anticipated release of Apple’s iPhone 12 on November 13 has local tech experts marvelling at the features of the latest model.

The first of Apple’s 5G compatible devices includes the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max and smaller 5.7-inch iPhone 12 Mini. “[As the] first 5G iPhone, the speeds are amazing,” Mr Carver says. “[The] camera is the game changer! Night selfies for me,” Kris Carver, CEO of local technology company, Entag, says.

“The Lidar scanner [makes] portrait photos in low light even better and then taking it the [next] step and introducing AR is super cool. The pro and pro max actually have slightly different camera features rather than being exactly the same.

“I also love that the pro max has the ability to record in Dolby vision 4K – what a feature!”

Mr Carver says the A14 bionic chip has faster processing power, apps open faster and the gaming experience is better.

With the variety of sizes and colours, he says the new model offers something for everyone. “I also like the new design, taking it back to the iPhone 4 days and

BUILDING A BOOK There’s not much Sunshine Coast charity Wishlist won’t tackle, including releasing a book featuring The House The Coast Built (also known as Wishlist House).

The book was made possible by two local writers, Maya Gurry and Megan Woodward, who donated their time and skills to make the story of fictional characters Will and Ellie come alive.

It tells the story of The House The Coast Built and the tale about how the house became a ‘home’.

“I think it’s sometimes difficult to explain what the house is about, and the easiest way to do that was in story form,” author Maya Gurry says.

“So the story is of Will and Ellie. Ellie ended up in hospital and Will and his parents needed somewhere to stay close to the hospital to be able to support her and feel like they could be close to a loved one.

“And that’s what the house is really all about, making sure families can be close together and that they have a safe place and feel like they are at home rather than being in hotel accommodation.”

Co-author Megan Woodward says she was thrilled to be part of the project.

Currently there are 10 disabled parking places between Alexandra Headland and the Mooloolaba Surf Club. Readers should be aware that under the revitalisation plan there will be only four disabled parking places.

A RICH COUNTRY ATTITUDE Sami Muirhead’s column (MWP 29/10) and MargaretAnne’s letter (MWP 29/10) got me thinking about how we think about money and the different perspectives we have in Australia.

Our Prime Minister doesn’t think earning a $180,000 annual income makes a person particularly wealthy. From what Sami wrote, she certainly thinks it does (and I have to agree with her). Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate obviously thinks thousands of dollars for Cartier watches as a bonus is a fair enough payment. Then there is the council, who thinks that a salary of $500,000 is also fair.

My only comment – my what a rich country Australia is, at least for some people.

DOING THE BEST FOR BUDERIM This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Buderim War Memorial Community Association (BWMCA), an organisation that has transformed the general community of Buderim and galvanised the spirit that has made this place such a desirable place to call home.

Like many small towns across Australia, Buderim’s community was gravely affected at the end of Second World War. What made this community different was a groundbreaking decision that, unlike other towns, a stone monument would not be constructed in the town centre, but instead an organisation would be created as a living monument to recognise the sacrifice of our Diggers. Thus, the Buderim War Memorial Community Centre (later changed to the Buderim War Memorial Community Association) was born, bringing the efforts of special interest groups across Buderim together in celebration of hard-won freedom. This way, the Buderim community helped returned soldiers and bestowed a real, personalised honour on our servicemen and servicewomen.

The BWMCA is entirely volunteer

based and draws from the ranks of passionate Buderim residents who want to maintain the spirit of active community and preserve Buderim’s unique community pride and amenity for future generations.

The headquarters of the BWMCA is the Old Post Office building. This building was purchased by community effort for the BWMCA. Additionally, the Old Post Office doubles as an information center and on Monday to Thursday from 10am until 1pm as a base for local JPs for Buderim and surrounding districts.

The organisation is managed by an advisory committee and a management group consisting of delegates from the affiliate members consisting of local special interest and sporting groups.

Beyond the activities of the affiliates are many committees, which are formed to run special events in Buderim. In conjunction with the local Lions and Rotary clubs, such as the Australia Day Parade, Anzac Day Parade, Buderim Street Party, Carols by Candlelight and more.

The BWMCA is responsible for ‘Welcome to Buderim’, a regular event where new residents can come along and meet their federal, state and council representatives and other new residents.

ONE THING YOU CANNOT DELEGATE When it comes to mastering your own wellbeing, self care is the one thing you cannot delegate.

Broadly speaking, self care simply means looking after your health and wellbeing. That’s what it is at the surface level. At the level of enhancement, it’s about becoming the best version of yourself.

Practicing self care is important because it makes you feel good and there should be no guilt associated with that.

It’s also good for our loved ones because it improves our mood, our ability to cope and how we interact with them. It’s difficult to be there for others if we don’t look after ourselves. And we should role model this important life skill for our loved ones, especially our kids.

Author Dr Deepak Chopra once said, “You must value yourself enough to make self care a priority.” It doesn’t matter who you are, your stage in life or status, self care should be your priority.

Self care isn’t something we can simply understand at an intellectual or logical level. And it’s not enough to know we need to do it – we must actually

practice it.

I teach my students how to set themselves up for life in the six most important health areas using my keep it simple smart (KISS) method.

Life doesn’t need to be complex – it’s us as human beings who make it so. And the same can be said for putting together a simple self care plan for yourself.

The core of putting together a self care plan is that it must be personal.

Keep it simple. Your self care plan needs to be easy enough for you to stick with. And remember – practicing self care isn’t something you can delegate to someone else.

Self care is an essential life skill that we all need to learn to become the best versions of ourselves.

Ashley Robinson is not seeing some important NRL stories hitting the headlines – so he’s here to tell you another tale.

he NRL season was certainly a bizzaro world in 2020 and while all should be commended for getting it done, there was certainly some weird decisions and not just by the referee. The Apollo team that set the COVID rules in place, including the bubble made a liar out of me as it didn’t end like Apollo 13 as I predicted earlier in the year, but it did hit a few bumps along the way.

My biggest fear over what has just occurred is the concentrating of all funding and all attention at the top level, which to be fair they had little choice this year, but let us hope it doesn’t continue into the future because that is a model the Rah Rah’s are still trying to recover from.

Surely it has become evident to those with influence that all levels of the game are important, particularly the second tier and youth identification and development programs. Someone needs to tell the media as well, for example if it wasn’t for second tier footy players like Clive Churchill Medal winner Ryan Papenhuyzen and the damaging Justin Olam may have been lost to the NRL. They honed their skills in the Intrust Cup and

had time to develop to arguably two of the best players in the NRL, but the media rarely talk about that.

The Coast was lucky to have the Storm play some home games here and I would have thought that would have been more fanfare about how many of those Storm players had played for the Falcons on more than one occasion. There were 11 or 12 on the field that had played at Sunshine Coast Stadium as their home ground when playing for the Falcons, but there was hardly a mention. I would have at least thought the local councillors would have been thumping their collective chest for supporting the Falcons through tough times, helping them be one of the best pathways to the NRL in the country but alas, I only heard crickets.

Lastly, the Sydney media were relentless in the bias towards Sydney teams to the point of slanderous with no repercussions and the really sad part is they all earn a living out of it? The good thing though is rugby league is resilient so bring on 2021, minus SBW (Sonny Bill Williams) driving around in a Bentley, which sort of sums up 2020?

ou can keep your Ryan Goslings and George Clooneys. I was always a Sean Connery kinda gal.

The only thing hotter than the dark and handsome actor was when he spoke in that broad Scottish accent. Holy tartan! The Goldfinger main man was a true movie star! Vale Sean Connery, leaving us as he hit 90 years of age. His acting career spanned five decades, and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.

I grew up with my mum and dad loving James Bond movies. I would sit in the dark at the top of the stairs on a Friday night and sneakily watch Agent 007 save the world and look a million bucks in the process. It was all as far removed from my suburban normal life as I could have ever imagined.

I loved the ’70s fashion the females wore and even as a young girl I knew Sean Connery was the only human being on the planet who was able to save the world from evil megalomaniacs. It ignited in me a lifelong love of James Bond movies and I cannot wait for the new film, No Time To Die, starring Daniel Craig to be released next April. But as Carly Simon crooned, nobody does it better when it comes to the

best of the Bonds.

Sean Connery stamped his own charm on the character of James Bond, blending his to-die-for good looks with ruthlessness and sardonic wit. The action scenes, exotic locations and steamy dialogue between the Bond girls and Sean Connery were always a winning formula.

While I watched from the staircase, my parents would watch the movie and eat an entire block of fruit and nut Cadbury dairy milk chocolate washed down with a port.

Mum no doubt had on her terry towelling short shorts and Dad wore a velvet maroon dressing gown most nights, if my faded memory serves me correctly. I may have invented that whole scenario in my mind, but I did sit as quiet as a mouse watching Bond from the staircase.

Sean Connery later lived at The Spit at Mooloolaba when he married Diane Cilento. My father always claimed locals saw the glamour couple in their kayak heading out to Old Woman Island.

Sean Connery, you sexy Scottish superstar, I hope that wherever you are the vodka martinis are strong and are served shaken not stirred.

Hitting the road: The Travelling Jackaroo gets ready to ride

Sam will start his long journey in February next year

H

e is only 17 years old, recently passed his driving test and is about to embark on a gap year adventure like no other.

Maleny’s Sam Hughes, otherwise known as the Travelling Jackaroo, is planning the outback trip of a lifetime as he prepares to travel 13,500 kilometres on a bright orange tractor.

Many locals may recognise the young man, who regularly drives into the main street of Maleny on the weekends.

“Most kids have a gap year,” he says.

“I love tractors and I thought, why not do something different.”

Sam will drive a fully restored Chamberlain 9G tractor on a yet-to-be finalised route across the Australian outback fundraising for three charities along the way.

“I will be stopping in all the major country town to fundraise,” he says.

“The tractor only goes 45 to 50 kilometres per hour, so it should be interesting.”

He is also having a trailer custom built to tow a car and store essential items, and as if he wasn’t a conversation starter enough, the trailer will be fitted with the fuselage of an old plane on top.

“I actually bought a plane wreckage from Caboolture Airfield a while ago and I was thinking I would do it up and put it on top of a shed or something,” Sam says.

“Then when I started planning this I thought, hey, what if put the plane on the roof of the trailer?”

With one of his chosen charities being the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Sam has been in touch with the charity to have the plane, which will double as a sleeping space for his long journey, painted to look like a working aircraft.

“I chose the Royal Flying Doctors Service because if you speak to anyone in the bush, everyone knows someone who has been saved by them.”

Sam is also supporting Dolly’s Dream, to raise awareness for bullying, and Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial, in recognition of the sacrifices truck drivers make to do their job.

“I think it’s important to give back and

Sam says he is grateful so far with the support form local business and other major companies who have come on board to sponsor or donate to the journey.

Currently busy with final year 12 exams and with plans to set off some time in February 2021, Sam says he is excited and nervous for the journey ahead and hopes his journey will leave a legacy for years to come.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) chief executive adjunct professor Naomi Dwyer says the hospital was built as a memorial to those who took part in World War I. “It was officially opened as a private hospital on October 21, 1920 and later gazetted as a general public hospital on May 21, 1921,” she says.

“The original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital served the community until a new facility was built and officially opened on October 17, 1987.

The old hospital site now houses Maleny Ambulance Station.

The health service also acknowledges the commitment of the hospital staff and the important role they have played in helping improve the health of the local community over the past 100 years.

SCHHS board chair Dr Lorraine Ferguson says, “From its very humble beginnings being funded by subscription, the facility has grown to today being a leader in movement disorders. It is very clear to see that throughout the decades, Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital has strong support from this community.

“This community has every right to be proud of its history and the unique place it holds in our Sunshine Coast region.”

Recycling and collaboration the future of business Yandina’s Rockcote is the first company to be part of a new online tool to help divert waste from landfill and connect businesses.

Sunshine Coast Council has launched Aspire (Advisory System for Process Innovation and Resource Exchange), an initiative encouraging a circular economy to eliminate waste and promote the continual use of resources.

“Rockcote is continually looking for new ways to include recycled and renewable materials in our products, such as shredding used polystyrene packaging to be incorporated in our render products,” CEO Paul Eveleigh (pictured) says.

To date, Rockcote has incorporated 2.5 million litres of recycled shredded polystyrene into its products.

Sunshine Coast Council is one of the first local government bodies in the state to adopt the program. “We’re proud to be one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in the ASPIRE platform to promote business sustainability and new collaborations,” economic development portfolio councillor Terry Landsberg says.

POLICE BRIEFS In the wake of the annual Day for Daniel, Bruce and Denise Morcombe are continuing to push the state government for a public sex offender register.

“You just need the ability to do a simple check instantly and assess whether that person has a criminal record of a heinous crime against a child,” Mr Morcombe says.

Shadow police minister Dan Purdie says it is frightening to think around 150 convicted offenders live on the Sunshine Coast, and there is only one police officer monitoring them.

Mr Purdie adds that there is overwhelming public support for a public register.

“The Sunshine Coast unfortunately know only too well the tragic circumstances behind the annual Day for Daniel, and it comes as no surprise that the majority of people here want tough new laws to help protect their children.”

His story is one of 178 entries from year four to nine students across more than 40 schools.

Now in its fifth year, the competition is organised by Mooloolaba Rotary Club in conjunction with Voices on the Coast and the University of the Sunshine Coast Creative Writing Program.

As part of the competition, students were asked to write on the topic ‘I should have been more careful’.

Younger students wrote 300 to 400 words, while the older students’ stories were 800 to 900 words in length.

Fairview, often referred to as Pattemore House, is a state heritage-listed property built in 1907 in North Maleny and is leased by a dedicated volunteer group, Friends of Pattemore House.

The group recently received a $7421 grant for a storytelling project, From Forest to Farmhouse – Building Fairview.

It is the story of the Pattemore brothers, who built Fairview using pit-sawn white beech, cut and dressed on the Maleny property, and how they, and other settlers in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, were able to convert a rainforest tree into a farmhouse.

The story will be re-enacted using a pit saw and other early tools, with the final product a digital story for display in Fairview.

The funding is part of Sunshine Coast Council’s latest round of Heritage Levy grants, with nine local organisations sharing in more than $43,000 to help with collection care, exhibitions and public programs.

Friends of Pattemore House president Gail Denver says the group is thrilled to receive the grant.

A wide range of organisations across our region will share in the total $823,200 grant program, with division six community groups collecting just over $57,000.

The latest major grants round had a strong focus on community facilities (infrastructure) projects due to the temporary suspension of usual cofunding requirements. This round has supported 35 infrastructure projects that are shovel-ready right now, which is excellent news for both the community groups who help make our region thrive and the local businesses they will use to deliver their projects.

hen it comes to preparing for a job interview, it can be difficult to anticipate what you might be asked and how to respond, especially if it is your first job.

For several years, members from local Rotary Clubs have been visiting Year 10

“The annual mock interviews for Maroochydore State High School Year 10 students not only form an integral part of their curriculum, they provide an excellent opportunity for students to have a practise run at a job interview with ‘strangers’ in our community so the actually get to feel some nerves, but more importantly, they gain valuable life experience in what it will be like when they actually apply for that job of their dreams,” Mr Hind says.

He adds that during the process, students are put through their paces and given hints on how to present and communicate themselves at interviews.

“One of the most difficult things that high school kids have to learn is how to answer the question ‘so, tell me a little bit about yourself and why you want this job’,” Mr Hind says.

Sunshine Coast Art Group exhibition Sunshine Coast Art Group is holding its annual Spring into Summer exhibition and art market later this month.

SCAG pottery leader Debra Ducrou says the group has been a creative hub for the community for more 50 years. “Our club is a friendly meeting place for artistic minds across all art disciplines including painting, life drawing, pottery, fashion sewing plus several bands. We welcome budding artists and seasoned talents to join and have regular self-help group sessions plus classes and workshops.”

he Sunshine Coast’s first indoor skate park has opened its doors in Birtinya as a venue inclusive of all abilities, and disabilities.

there was no indoor space in the region for his sons to skateboard.

“My boys love their skateboarding and we were going to the local skate parks and it just gets so hot in summer.”

own and after much planning and securing a premises, Alley-Oops opened earlier in October.

One must for his new venue was it needed to be inclusive of everyone, no matter their ability. “When we were at the skate parks we noticed a few kids with disabilities just sitting and watching and I thought about how we could include them,” he says.

Looking into a few options to purchase special harness skateboards, Mr King ended up designing one of his own, going through all the testing channels to have them ready to go.

“We have what we call a skating rig,” he says. “It allows kids who are wheelchair bound to be in a harness and get a feel for skating.”

He says all abilities use the one skating area, allowing children to interact with each other. “It’s great for the other kids as it teaches them acceptance.

“We are a progressive skate park and have a ramp to suit levels.”

Mr Kings says since opening, the venue has been extremely popular with children of all ages.

And the name? For those who are unfamiliar with skateboarding, an alley-oop is an air trick where your body moves sideways in the opposite direction that you are rotating.

Steve Irwin Way upgrade promised An $18 million upgrade to Steve Irwin Way between Beerwah and Landsborough is set to go ahead with the federal government committing $14.4 million to the project.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says after personally seeing how dangerous the stretch of road is, the project increases safety and boost jobs.

“During my two Tour de Fisher rides around this community, I have seen firsthand how dangerous this stretch of road is, and how desperately needed these safety upgrades are,” Mr Wallace says. “However, this project will also have wider benefits for our community, because this funding is going to support around 58 jobs throughout construction.”

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says the project will include several features. “These upgrades, which include road widening, centreline upgrades and audio tactile line marking, will reduce the risk of run-off road and head-on crashes,” Mr McCormack says.

“The project will also upgrade the roadside hazard treatments and deliver three right-turn lanes to deliver a safer roadside environment.”

Construction is expected to start in January 2021 and be completed in June 2021, weather permitting.

The state government is contributing $3.6 million to the project.

“I would like to thank the competition winners – Lenore Meldrum, Gwenneth Davis, Cheryl Parsons, Jenny Catalano, Kennedy Fox and Leonie Neil – for sharing their personal photos for all our community to enjoy.”

Community portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says flipping through this year’s calendar is like taking a stroll down the historical catwalk of fashion.

“It brings a smile to your face to look back at fashion over the years and see how it reflected our Sunshine Coast lifestyle,” Cr Baberowski says.

“The calendar is a great conversation starter, and a fun way to lightly step back in time each month and relive the memories of our fashion choices. I wonder how many of these styles will make a comeback.”

The calendar is now available for purchase from the Sunshine Coast Council’s library branches and customer service centres.

History comes alive at beloved Bankfoot House It is an iconic property in the Glass House Mountains, but do you know the history behind Bankfoot House?

Back in 1868 the property was used for a lunch stop and staging post for Cobb & Co coaches travelling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields.

Today, the restored property is open to visitors, with volunteers showing people around to see historic collections, exhibits and the stunning grounds.

The last resident of Bankfoot House, Jack Ferris, died in 2002 at the age of 101. The Caloundra City Council, as it was then known, purchased the house and contents from the Ferris family in 2004 with a commitment to establishing the property as a House Museum.

POLICE BRIEFS Sunshine Coast Police are once again pleading with locals to lock up and secure their valuables after releasing their most recent list of stolen vehicles.

Administrative officer David McLean says police are asking members of the public to assist in locating the below vehicles.

On October 19, a purple/mauve 1998 Suzuki Dr200 trail bike with registration 138PV was stolen from Golden Beach.

On October 20, a white 2014 Holden Captiva with registration 251VTR was stolen from Meridan Plains. While a white 2004 Holden Rodeo with registration 875REP was stolen from Moffat Beach on October 21.

“We would also like to remind everyone to ensure that their vehicles are left secured at all times, valuables are removed and car keys are secured,” Mr McLean says.

A

fter a mammoth fundraising effort, Metropolitan-Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club has contributed more than $50,000 to the annual Support our Savers, or SOS Week, campaign.

The local club came in as the highest

fundraisers, raising an enormous $53,466 towards the $382,848.68 total.

Caloundra ‘Mets’ were innovative in their fundraising with two members running nearly two marathons within 48 hours to encourage people to donate.

who gave us what they could we say the most heartfelt thank you; you don’t know how grateful we are,” a statement from the club reads.

“To our club members, the fabric that holds us together, thank you for your time spent fundraising, creating the best club culture in Queensland and, of course, volunteering in all aspects that keep our club running.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) CEO Dave Whimpey congratulated Met Caloundra and thanked everyone who donated throughout the campaign.

“Raising more than $380,000 in the middle of a pandemic is an outstanding result for our organisation,” he says.

“A special congratulations to Met Caloundra, who raised the most of any club across Queensland.

“We are bracing for a busy summer, so we thank every person, government body or corporation who donated to our cause.”

For the SOS campaign, SLSQ come together with 52 of their surf lifesaving clubs between October 12 and 18, as they united in raising vital funds for lifesaving equipment and member training.

This year’s money was raised through club collections, government and corporate donations and the final tally was up by more than $60,000 year-on-year compared with $319,373.04 raised in 2019.

A return to uni worth it for this new teacher When former Landsborough man Matthew McCurdy finished high school 17 years ago, the competitive cyclist completed a biochemistry degree, achieved success in team racing humanpowered vehicles and worked in bike shop sales and management for 10 years.

But he left behind one ambition.

“I’d always loved maths and science and thought teaching would be the perfect avenue to embrace that passion, but I didn’t have the confidence to pursue it straight out of school,” he says.

Now 35, Mr McCurdy is the new science and maths teacher at Warwick State High School after recently graduating from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a University Medal for his grade point average of 6.88 out of seven.

“I felt my life skills and maturity would set me up to come back to tertiary education as a mature-aged student and make the most of all of my opportunities.

“Completing my final semester over

Zoom was difficult but our small cohort of graduating teachers banded together and supported each other.

“In my final year I enrolled in the Queensland Government’s Teacher Education Centre of Excellence program, which was supported by USC and guaranteed me a permanent position in a regional location on graduation.”

He says teaching is rewarding and challenging, and he particularly enjoys seeing students have “lightbulb moments” when he relates the content to their own lives.

“One of my best experiences so far was helping a boy go from an E to a B in science,” he says Mr McCurdy, his wife and two young children are embracing life in Warwick after moving from the Sunshine Coast.

Mr McCurdy, whose team won the Australian and International Pedal Prix in South Australia in 2011, plans to continue racing human-powered vehicles when opportunities arise.

At just seven years old Charlotte Kelly is writing her way to success as the proud author of a published children’s book.

The Caloundra City Private School Year one student wrote her first book over a two-month period late last year.

Her dad, Tim, says he was so proud of his daughter he organised to have the book professionally edited and published.

“She wrote it sentence by sentence every night before bed into her special unicorn notebook,” Mr Kelly says. “No father could be more proud.”

Charlotte’s picture book, The Big Cats Game, tells the story of a lion learning to make friends through playing games.

“I chose big cats [as main characters] because I love big cats and I had the lion as the new friend because my mum loves lions,” she says.

“I’m writing another one too – it’s going to be about an alicorn.”

A tiny ringtail possum who was recently admitted to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is now on the mend.

Holly the joey suffered an injury to her ear after she was attacked by a cat.

Rare tiger snake sighting in Landsborough reserve In a rare find, a tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) was spotted during an inspection of a reserve at Landsborough, purchased through the Sunshine Coast Environment Levy.

It is only the fifth official recorded sighting of this species of venomous snake on the Sunshine Coast – the last time being 2015.

Environment and liveability portfolio councillor Peter Cox says the snake sighting demonstrates the value of the council’s land acquisition program, which strategically acquires land to

protect, preserve and enhance the natural environment. “This latest record of the tiger snake confirms what we already know – that the bushland areas in the Pumicestone Passage catchment are biodiverse and extremely valuable to our region,” Cr Cox says.

Senior natural areas planner Jacqueline Nolen says tiger snakes are rare on the Sunshine Coast because they prefer cooler climates.

“The lower part of the Sunshine Coast marks the northern-most extent of its coastal distribution,” Ms Nolen says.

Trudy Kither lists some of the signs to look out for so that your feet can give you a head start on health.

sually when there is a problem with your liver (or heart), you will be able to see it in your feet.

This is because your heart has to send the blood all the way down to the feet and all the way back through your vascular system. Feet are furthest from the heart.

Here are some signs to look out for: • Red and brown dots on the lower leg can be poor circulation and could be an indicator of diabetes.

• Spider veins can be seen in cirrhosis as there can be a lot of estrogen building up

in the liver, and too much estrogen can affect your vascular system.

• Cracked heels can point to a vitamin B3 deficiency, lack of silica, or an Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency. One of the functions of the liver is to make bile and to help absorb fatty acids. Not just Omega 3 fatty acids but vitamins A and E also contribute to skin health.

• Itching on the bottom (sole) of the foot could be a congested liver or even a back-up of fluids into the liver or gall bladder. The reason for the itching, in this case, is the build-up of histamines in the

body. Also, pain or inflammation at the bottom of the foot can be associated with the liver. This can sometimes be diagnosed as plantar fasciitis when in fact, it is a liver problem.

• Hot feet or bad odour can be another symptom of a liver problem as the liver can’t detoxify itself correctly and is backing up and emitting the odour through your skin. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so that is where a liver that is not detoxifying properly will end up trying to exude its toxicity.

• If you can push on your skin and leave an

VITAMIN C DEFICIENCY A COMMON HAZARD Low levels of vitamin C, especially among the housebound, can be behind many health issues.

Kendall Morton explains the risks and how to avoid them.

R

esearchers at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide found 75 per cent of their general medical patients had lower than normal levels of vitamin C, and 40 per cent of the patients sampled over three months had a severe vitamin C deficiency.

Dr Sharma, who led the study, said low vitamin C levels slowed healing and meant that patients had longer hospital stays. He recommended that patients have their vitamin C levels tested on admission to hospital so that this could be boosted to aid healing if needed.

Vitamin C levels are now so low that Australian, American and British doctors are seeing cases of “the sailor’s curse” – scurvy.

In Britain, between 2009 and 2014, hospital admissions related to scurvy went up by 27 per cent although total numbers were under 100 in 2014.

The symptoms of scurvy include bleeding gums, fatigue, bruises that are slow to heal and joint pain.

superficial haemorrhages, the bloody areas under the skin. Another sign is bright red hair follicles where blood vessels have broken and blood has pooled at the base of the follicle.

Scurvy is fatal if untreated. Due to the lack of collagen, teeth become loose, gum disease sets in and bones collapse. As your system breaks down, you bleed for no apparent reason.

Vitamin C is essential for the production of healthy collagen, the major

protein that gives structure to skin, bones and connective tissues.

In recent studies, vitamin C has been shown to help prevent and manage osteoporosis. It stimulates the bonebuilding cells known as osteoblasts, boosting your bone density. If you do fall, you are less likely to break your bones.

Vitamin C is also crucial for wound healing and helps absorb iron from your diet. As it is powerful antioxidant, it protects bone cells from damage. It is also anti-inflammatory.

Older Australians who are housebound and people who rely on packaged meals are most at risk of vitamin C deficiency.

If you live alone, it’s easy to lose interest in preparing food. Those with dementia who may not have an appetite or forget to eat are also at risk.

Vitamin C is water soluble. Our bodies cannot store it or make it so it needs to be taken each day. Getting an affordable fresh supply of vitamin C can be a challenge for some older Australians who have limited mobility and find it hard to get to the supermarket regularly.

The recommended daily intake of

vitamin C for adults over 70 is 45 milligrams.

There are many summer fruits with good supplies of vitamin C, including mangoes, pineapples, papaya and rockmelon. Berries and citrus fruits are also reliable sources.

For vegetables, consider tomatoes, broccoli and capsicum. If you enjoy coleslaw, one cup of cabbage has about 36 milligrams of vitamin C. Sprinkle coleslaw with orange juice instead of a dressing.

Red cabbage is higher in vitamin C than green cabbage. Vitamin C levels drop once fruit is cut, so it is best to prepare the fruit when you are ready to eat it.

Enjoy some vitamin C in drinks, snacks and salads this summer. Check with your doctor before taking supplements though, as excess vitamin C is excreted via the kidneys. An oversupply can put a strain on your renal system.

Theo Shemansky explains that our culture of avoiding squats at all costs comes with a high price.

O

ur modern lifestyles have led to a rise in back and shoulder pain. This is what we can gain from squatting.

1. Correct body position The muscles that hold the spine straight can be developed by squatting, as it places weight naturally and functionally through the erector muscles of the spine and stimulates natural strength. Many think that by going to the gym and using the machines correctly it will improve body posture and position, but this is not true.

While machine-based exercises increase the size of the muscle being trained they also create imbalance, and don’t provide a broad enough base for good functional movement to help and protect the spine.

2. Eliminate chronic pain Functional training with movements such as squatting improves our movement proficiency. When we move well, we are less likely to generate forces on parts of the body that have wear and tear. It follows that we will have less pain.

3. Squats increase flexibility Good functional movements such as squatting increase the range of motion in the hips, knees, ankles, shoulders and

upper spine.

4. Reverse effects of imbalances Squatting is a functional, symmetrical movement that keeps our spine neutral and focuses our movement on the hips which allows large muscles to strengthen.

5. Slow the signs of ageing Squatting increases collagen production, which means a more toned appearance.

6. Reduce the risk of osteoporosis Squats improve bone density in our spine and hips. Bone health and strength prevents injuries.

7. Strengthen your knees Doing squats increases strength in the muscles above the knees which protect and stabilise knees. Contrary to popular opinion, squats are not bad for your knees.

In fact, when done correctly, they will protect and stabilise knees.

8. Boost in human growth hormone Through squatting, especially when a weight is applied, large muscles exert effort which causes damage that must be repaired. In response, the pituitary gland releases human growth hormone to allow healing. It also stimulates bone strength, fat loss, increases energy, stabilises mood, cell reproduction and regeneration.

As people age, they generally become less outgoing. New research from the US shows that this change in personality is noticeably worse with people affected by hearing loss.

The findings of the research certainly emphasise the need to attend to hearing loss early.

Researchers studied 400 people ages 80 to 98 over six years. Every two years, the researchers assessed participants’ physical and mental status. They included emotional stability and personality aspects such as extroversion – the inclination to be outgoing. The results show that even if emotional stability remained constant over the period, the participants became less outgoing. The only factor that could be

linked to reduced extroversion was hearing loss.

The study did not find that declining overall health and functional capacity make people less outgoing, but that hearing loss directly affects the quality of social situations. If the perceived quality of social interaction goes down, there is a distinct possibility it may impair the ability to relate socially with others.

Maintaining muscle loss as you age

Is surgery really the answer?

Reasons you may not be losing weight!

After the age of 30, it is likely that you have already begun to lose muscle mass. And it gets worse with every birthday. Up to a quarter of adults over the age of 60 and half of those over 80 have thinner arms and legs than they did in their youth.

Sarcopenia is the medical term used to describe muscle loss. It’s likely that muscle ageing has several underlying factors, including decreased numbers of muscle stem cells, mitochondrial dysfunction, a decline in protein quality and turnover, and hormonal loss.

Loss of muscle mass is associated with muscle weakness, which can make doing daily activities difficult – this in turn, further accelerates muscle loss. Having poor muscle bulk is a risk factor for further complications in older age like falls and fractures.

Exercise is the main method of slowing down muscle loss. Recent research has demonstrated that physical activity can promote cellular health, increase protein production, and restoring hormonal function.

However, it is important to chat to your GP before starting on any new exercise to get the all clear.

I would never recommend surgery to one of my patients unless all other treatment options had been tried, in order to allow the body to heal naturally. Rarely, patients can have arm or leg weakness, problems with bladder function or even spinal cord damage and, in these circumstances, surgery can be undertaken as an emergency in order to provide the best opportunity for the damaged nerve to recover.

Frequently, patients have pain, numbness, ‘pins and needles’ or burning and I am able to reassure them that time, simple painkillers, physiotherapy and following the advice of their GP will allow things to settle.

Luckily, we have access to minimally invasive or ‘keyhole’ techniques to help patients so that they can recover faster.

Most patients are able to get up and about the same day as their operation and can often be discharged after one or two nights in hospital. An understanding of the risks and benefits of all treatments for compressed nerves ensures the best outcome for patients with back and neck problems.

There are a number of reasons a person may struggle to lose weight. Firstly, you may be eating too many calories, resulting in the unused calories being converted into fat cells if not used as energy.

Another is your plan may not be tailored specifically to your goal. There’s no point eating more calories only to try and outrun your diet. Leave that for the genetically gifted five per cent of the population.

You also could find yourself undereating, which in turn can slow down your metabolism. If you under-eat, your body will go into survival mode, and will refuse to release fat cells as it is unsure when the next meal is coming.

And finally, you may have a history of yo-yo dieting, which has suppressed your metabolism and trained your body to only accept low calories. This can be reversed over time by slowly adding calories weekly to your diet. Metabolism follows food, so a simple increase in calories over months can reverse this.

Start focusing more on intensity, consistency and have patience to achieve the results you are after as it will not happen overnight.

DIABETES AND ALZHEIMER’S Diabetes, especially Type 2 or Maturity Onset Diabetes, is a disease of growing prevalence, especially in older Australians.

Diabetes occurs when the control of blood sugar begins to fail and blood sugar levels rise. It is a condition normally treated with improved diet and lifestyle changes, such as more exercise. The second stage of treatment usually consists of using oral antidiabetic medications. The third stage usually involves the use of injectable insulin.

These treatments are all intended to lower blood sugar to reduce the potential for heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems, to prevent ocular deterioration and blindness, to prevent damage to the kidneys, and neuropathic effects such as loss of feeling or pain usually commencing in the feet, and extending to other parts of the body.

Research published in 2020 in several Australian and international journals is also beginning to suggest there is a link between diabetes and dementias, especially Alzheimer’s disease. The accumulation of Beta-amyloid plaques (protein plugs deposited between nerve cells) appears to play a large role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. This has been treated by medicines that affect chemical transmitters in the brain, with variable success. The recent research suggests dysregulation of insulin occurs in peripheral tissues in adults suffering from Alzheimer’s. At the same time, changes in diet have appeared to improve central nervous system insulin sensitivity, which in turn has improved peripheral metabolism.

This has led to the proposal that the medications for Type 2 diabetes may be able to impact on the severity and pathology of Alzheimer’s disease.

So while much work needs to be done, it’s beginning to look like insulin sensitivity in the central nervous system not only affects diabetes in the body, with all the diabetic effects noted above, it also may be affecting the accumulation of amyloid plaques and the development of Alzheimer’s. If this proves to be correct it will mean blood sugar control through diet, exercise and oral medication, especially those treating insulin resistance, will become even more important as they could have a significant role in staving off the onset of dementia. myweeklypreview.com.au

year hits a ball for a donation from the women for the charity’s fundraising golf day. This year’s much smaller late October event raised $4000.

The charity’s program coordinator Lisa Daldy says the community support this year has been “incredible”.

“It’s amazing what they have been able to do in this difficult year,” she says.

While the final numbers are still to be worked out, Ms Daldy says the community has raised just shy of $15,000. “The fact that the money is going to support local families has made a big difference,” she adds.

Wait a moment; Mr Hills had to put the phone down for a minute to pick up his driver for a what he wanted to be a 310-metre shot but probably was a 260-metre shot down the fairway for the Alex Surf Club fundraising golf day. Mr Hill admits being out on the golf course and raising much needed raising community funds “makes you feel good”.

Next year he plans to raise the bar with even more pink in his outfit and double the Property Today contribution for a hole-in-one.

Brenko Lee’s emotional NRL rebirth

S

torm centre Brenko Lee once took rugby league for granted, and it nearly cost him a chance of achieving some of the game’s highest honours.

Minutes after finding out he was adding a place in the Queensland Origin squad to his premiership ring on Sunday night, an emotional Mr Lee told NRL.com about going from having no contract a year ago to winning a grand final.

“I can’t really describe it man. I’m very emotional,” he says. “I didn’t even have a contract last year. It’s a special feeling.

I’ve worked my arse off. I’m just really grateful to be here and to be able to call myself a premiership player.

“We’ve had the longest year, being away from Melbourne and living out of a suitcase, but we got there in the end.”

Mr Lee spoke to NRL.com about the pain of losing his nan and then his aunty

this year, plus the struggles of his short and ill-fated attempted switch to rugby and struggles with weight and fitness when it looked like his NRL career could be on the scrapheap.

So what would the Brenko Lee of 12 months ago have said if you told him he was a year away from a grand final win and an Origin berth?

“I’d think they were telling me a story because that’s a fairy tale,” he says.

“I can’t believe it. I had no contract. I was at a crossroads. Now I have a ring and I’m about to roll into Origin camp.

“Whatever happens, happens. The rest is history. I’m grateful to be called into Origin camp because Queensland means the world to me.

“I just want to celebrate this right now and soak it all in then go into camp fresh. Whoever Wayne [Bennett] picks for game one, I know they’re going to do the

job. Fingers crossed I’m in that game one team but I’m just so blessed to be part of this [Melbourne] organisation.

“I’ve got a long way to go. I’ve still got a lot to learn and still picking up habits but I’ve got to retain what I do now.

“Things like sleeping at the same time every night. I try to go to bed by 10 O’clock, I try to eat the same every morning, I do the same stretches every day. If I play good, whatever I do leading up to that game I just stick to it as a routine.

“I sit on the same seat on the bus all the time – it’s just a routine I’ve got. The Storm is all about routine and preparation and doing your best.”

The more Mr Lee reveals about the challenges of the past 12 months, the more the emotions begin to overflow.

“It’s so much relief. So much relief,” he says through tears. “We had it all

against us; no one believed in us. Penrith won 17 straight – [people thought] we couldn’t beat them but at the end of the day our inner sanctum believed that we could.

“There was so much pressure going into the game. But it was good pressure because we believed we were peaking.”

“We got into half time and we still knew they were going to come out firing because they’re a wonderful footy side.

You can’t win 17 in a row as a fluke. They know how to play footy.

“Nine minutes to go, I’ll be honest with you, when they sent off Jahrome Hughes, I thought ‘what have we done, why has God got to do this to us!’

$115m commitment to sport funding The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is providing sports and athletes with greater certainty, committing in advance more than $115 million to Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games sports for the 2021-22 financial year.

The AIS will increase direct investment into Paralympic sport by more than $3 million in 2021-22 and extend the vast majority of current funding levels for able-bodied sports through to the end of June 2022.

Australian Sports Commission (ASC) chair John Wylie says, “This gives sports funding clarity for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games. It is also a springboard towards Paris 2024.

“We are particularly pleased to also announce an increase of $3.02 million funding to Paralympic sports, which will benefit 13 sporting programs. Since 2012, the ASC has increased funding to Paralympic sports by 40 per cent.”

Laura Langman calls time on netball career

T

he illustrious playing career of Laura Langman has come to a close, with the Sunshine Coast Lightning captain officially retiring from netball.

Ms Langman made her debut in 2003 with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic while still in high school, going on to play more than 225 National League games and becoming the most capped Silver Fern in history.

Ms Langman made the announcement via social media, crediting her teammates for making her career so special. “I know now is the right time for me to move on and I’m excited about the challenges that await – whatever they may be,” she says.

“There’s something incredible that comes with the camaraderie in team sport. I’ve met so many amazing people and that is what I am going to miss most.

“Team mates see you at your best, your worst and all the times in between.

These are the memories that make the journey so special.

“My Lightning teammates have all inspired me in different ways; they make you want to be your absolute best and they have all become my family.”

Lightning head coach Kylee Byrne says while she’d love the midcourter to remain at Lightning for another season, she has the utmost respect for Ms Langman and her decision to move on.

“The legacy that Lauz will leave at our

club and the sport in general is monumental; one of netball’s greats has retired this week,” Ms Byrne says.

“I was struggling big time with my mental health as well as the training environment,” Ms Rogers says.

“As I start a new chapter with nerves and excitement, I thank the people who have supported me with this decision.

“I’ve had so much support from most of the Noosa community and truly thankful for it.”

Ms Rogers recently won the inaugural Alex Unbreakable held at Alexandra Headland as part of the Coolangatta Gold festival.

I just re-examined an old aerial picture of Mooloolaba, snapped before the rock wall was built. Being a Mooloolaba boy for more than 35 years, the old boys use to give me the history lesson on how amazing the right-handers were and how they use to break from outside Point Cartwright right through the Bay to the beach. That is like Snapper, and yes, I can confirm from the picture I have just seen, there is photographic evidence of this perfect right-hander peeling down a sand bar. Anyone got a time machine because it looks insane! Maybe six to eight years ago the sand build-up in the bay replicated a good section of this and I witnessed a guy get a stand-up barrel in the Mooloolaba river mouth. Laters.
