From the editor Life is a rollercoaster. There are fun days, like Melbourne Cup, when you get to dress up and go out for a delightful lunch – check out our colourful cover story. Additionally, columnists Sami Muirhead and Ashley Robinson have used their natural talents to point out the many hilarious way they tackle daily events. Their writings give me faith that it is possible for everyone to get through everyday mishaps – even if in Ashley’s case, your spirit is slightly dampened! In her monthly column, Jeanette Allom-Hill discusses current issues of judgement toward politicians. Have a read and email us your view. There are winning days too, when everything is coming up roses, and all your hard work is recognised and rewarded. This week, you can see a selection of people whose creative craftsmanship has seen
them named in the annual HIA Awards. On the other hand, there are times that rocket us so far away from what we know as good and kind and right that we fear we will never come back to feeling safe again. It’s those times when all we can do to overcome such disaster is to turn up with a brave heart. In this case, I am referring to the annual Day for Daniel. Bruce and Denise Morcombe have unerringly shown up for their son and in turn, all Australian children, as they work to ensure the tragic loss of their son Daniel never happens to another child. Because of COVID, the annual walk will be carried out in other ways – see page 20 for details. I hope you enjoy the new placement of our super local news in this edition. Frock up and have some fun for Melbourne Cup Melbourne Cup is still going ahead, so whether you’re attending an event or not, here’s some style advice from our local boutiques. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

ow does one resist the urge on Melbourne Cup Day to dress up? The answer is… you don’t. You get flexible, you recreate – and you go for glamour. In our marvellous Sunshine Coast manner, fashionistas, friends, family, and those who enjoy a dress-up and a party have produced their own celebrations and they’re doing it in their own style. In a region better known for thongs and sarongs, it’s the day of the year when locals turn on the style. Traditionally, it’s the day to do your own thing. Think cool and classic, fun and floral. Or, you can put together an array of op shop vintage – the trick is to wear it with aplomb. Take your costume cues from the stunning Melbourne Cup fashion story that throughout the years, has been shaped with equal amounts of elegance, outrage, and futuristic thinking. In 1965, English model Jean Shrimpton outed a gloveless, above-the knee-frock style. I have read that Ms Shrimpton was surprised at Australia’s response to the outfit, which in a nutshell, amounted to a collective, “What the (bleep) was she
thinking?” Later on in the 21st century, the progeny of that generation were once again, let’s say alert (but not alarmed) when American import Paris Hilton strutted her especially brief stuff across the same trail as Jean Shrimpton, and met with a lesser, though similar simper of shock and horror. Of course, these figures are obviously chosen for their controversial appeal. There is the playful and frivolous element that cannot be quashed. Who could not admire the handsome man who doffs a top hat to team up with boardies? I love the ladies who mix and do not match their stripes, dots and oranges and pinks. My female friends always find their own sort of fabulous. At home, in the office, in the shops and at the seaside, let’s step up, get silly, smart or snappy and show off our best selves the way we have been doing since time began – with flair and fun (and perhaps a tad of champagne and canapes). ikki Miller, owner of Buderim fashion boutique Sedgwick’s, comments on how we have all been underwhelmed by a year of dullness. So, this year, she would like to see Melbourne Cup day bring forth some brightness and beauty into our lives. Ms Miller feels that despite a change of entertainment styles due social restrictions, there is still an air of excitement around and women have not forgotten the art of investing in a special piece, nor of creating their own events. “A number of our customers are holding their own garden party,” she says. Ms Miller sees dressing up as creating positive energy and advises: “Dress up because you feel good and enjoy it – and if you do that, then someone else will surely share the good feeling.” This year’s style features a 1970s influence. Think wide-brimmed and floppy hats. Fabrics of soft pink and blues in florals. Accessories are giving an individual look to the popular tiered dress. “You can dress the tiered dress up or down and they’re trans-seasonal. You can change the look by cinching in the waist with a woven belt. Or even buy a ribbon and wrap around your waist,” Ms Miller suggests. “If you select a plain fabric, then you can team it up with a set of big, funky earrings.” In terms, of shoes, it’s all good news. You do not have to wear high heels to look fabulous. Ms Miller says slip on wedges, kitten heels or elegant flats. Anthea Nicholson of That Shop for Her at Bli Bli,is delighted by one aspect of this year’s recent turn of events. “There’s no pressure about being the best at the track,” she says. Instead, she says her customers are enjoying at-home events with friends

She says customers are favouring traditional pairings of white with navy, black with a splash of vivid pink or black and white. Alternatively, her store features outfits in pink and blue floral pastels together with dusty, earthy tones. Of course, a Melbourne Cup day fashionista is not a starter without appropriate headwear. GET RED, RED, READY FOR DAY FOR DANIEL 2020 This year will be a different Walk for Daniel as new ways to fundraise are announced.

ince 2005, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation has gathered with the community to Walk for Daniel, from Suncoast Christian College in Woombye to Palmwoods. United as one, the crowd walks Daniel home to Palmwoods, a trip he was unable to complete himself. Each year thousands of supporters walk with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in a homecoming for Daniel, from the underpass where Daniel was last seen, through the scenic countryside and finishing in Palmwoods. The walk is a fun, uplifting event, making the visual statement that crimes against children have no place in modern Australia. This year, due to COVID-19, the public will not be able to attend the walk, so the Foundation has created My Walk for Daniel, enabling Australians to participate in the walk their own way. On October 30, supporters all over the country will join with the Foundation to Walk for Daniel wherever they are, from Nambour to the Nullabor, Broome to Bondi. The Walk for Daniel signifies the start of Day for Daniel, the Foundation’s annual day of action for child safety education and awareness. Fundraising from My Walk for Daniel and Day for Daniel help develop child safety resources and support young victims of crime. Forty artworks by artists from across Australia are now on display at Caloundra Regional Gallery for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2020 exhibition. From a record 711 entries, the finalists are vying for the major acquisitive prize of $25,000 sponsored by Argon Law and Sunshine Coast Council. This year’s exhibition reflects two-dimensional arts practice across Australia, encompassing a variety of mediums. Finalists include established and emerging artists, such as Michael Nelson Jagamara, Hiromi Tango and Natalya Hughes. The exhibition is on until December 6.

The gift will be auctioned off to raise funds for some important safety equipment at the North Shore Community Centre, including a defibrillator. Lion’s spokesperson Evan Flower says it will make a great Christmas gift for a company to acknowledge support from a loyal client over this difficult period. BRAS N BIKES RIDE A HUGE SUCCESS
Sunshine Coast Airport is continuing to put safety first after joining forces with local aviation operators to carry out an inspection of its new runway as part national Airport Safety Week 2020. Airport-based personnel participated in the foreign object debris walk to help locate material which may pose as safety hazards, including loose hardware, pavement fragments and even luggage. Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie says in line with this year’s theme , ‘we are in this together’, the exercise signified collaboration with the aviation industry which continued to endure the effects of COVID-19.
The 19th and final Bras n Bikes charity ride by local motorcycle group Girl Torque was a raging success on Sunday, October 18, with riders from all over the state turning up to the event. The fundraiser also saw many donate online via a virtual ride. More than 600 riders turned up, raising $21,000, and still counting, for Buderim-based Bloomhill Cancer Care. The charity provides nurse-led care and allied health and wellness support for people diagnosed with cancer. Onlookers across the hinterland stopped to wave and cheer the pink parade, which rumbled through Yandina, Bli Bli, Landsborough, Montville and Nambour between 9.30 and 11.30am. They included Chic and Sassy Boutique owner Claire Teys and husband Jarrett, who cheered on riders from outside their Montville shop, amid a cloud of bubbles put on by a neighbouring business. After 19 years, the Bras n Bikes event has announced earlier in this year this would be their final run.

Sunshine Coast local DJ and vocalist Niki Dé Saint was recently named the winner of 91.9 Sea FM’s Big Break. Dé Saint is an experienced musician and music stylist who specialises in luxury events worldwide. The runner up was the incredible emerging artist Sari Abbott, a local teenage singer-songwriter who has performed as a guest at Byron Bay’s Bluesfest and was a top 10 finalist in the junior talent search at the Gympie Muster 2019. Ms Dé Saint and Ms Abbott will now have the chance to perform at the Caloundra Music Festival in 2021.
Caloundra’s Colin Vale has been named the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Outstanding Alumnus 2020. He graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 2010 and has been working with companies in Papua New Guinea, while also tackling the community issue of domestic violence. USC’s Regional Achievement Award went to 2010 business graduate Raphael McGowan of Mooloolaba who created the sunscreen application device Bakslap. The Rising Star award was shared by 2016 graduate Dr Krystina Lamb and 2010 business (tourism) graduate Ali Couwenberg.

WHERE THE NRL GRAND FINAL WAS WON AND LOST Melbourne Storm held off a late surge from the Penrith Panthers to claim the 2020 NRL premiership on Sunday night. WORDS: Jamie Soward.
M
elbourne dominated the big moments and their class prevailed as they secured what should go down as the most special of their six premierships. But make no mistake: the young Panthers will win a title soon and they would have gained a lot from Sunday’s grand finale. Craig Bellamy now has an undeniable case for being the greatest coach of all time, while Cameron Smith – the greatest player – was masterful at controlling things in the 26–20 win. However, I didn’t think the Storm were necessarily the best team for long periods. The Panthers had the upper hand emotionally at times but couldn’t execute on their chances – which Melbourne did. Penrith’s halves, Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai will have learned from the tough experience. Jarome took a while to find a groove. I know Penrith wanted to get second rower Viliame Kikau into the game, but I would’ve liked to have seen Luai run the ball more himself with his dangerous ad-lib style. Nathan probably went into his shell a bit. His first attacking kick wasn’t a great one, and although he adjusted, things didn’t go
to plan. That was highlighted by the pass he threw, which Suliasi Vunivalu intercepted to score leading up to half-time. All week Penrith would have spoken about passing short and getting to the outside that way. Ultimately, it was the play that swung the match firmly in the Storm’s favour as they went to a 16–0 lead. I don’t think Melbourne would have allowed a try to be scored after

the ball was intercepted. Nathan and Jarome both had outstanding seasons and they’ll continue to lead the Panthers into an era of great success. Going back to the start of the match, Penrith earning possession right away after the Storm bungled the kick-off was perhaps the worst result for the minor premiers. Their first set was very conservative, as though they were shocked by having the ball, compared to their normal style. That worried me. I knew the Storm would hold out for long periods. Melbourne then found their rhythm and scored a penalty try through Justin Olam when Tyrone May dislodged the ball with his boot. I thought the correct call was made. Unfortunately for Tyrone, the move to start him in the centres again didn’t really pay off. Penrith wrestled back momentum and had plenty of intensity but couldn’t break Melbourne’s line down. The Storm strangled them with a couple of penalty goals before Vunivalu’s try. And then Smith went over after Api Koroisau swiped at the ball and knocked it loose. The slow start and a multitude of errors cruelled the Panthers. They did the same

After deserved Clive Churchill Medal winner Ryan Papenhuyzen burned past May and Cleary to claim a long-range try, the Panthers side that won 17 straight games turned up for half an hour. They shouldn’t have been awarded a try to Brian To’o. Isaah Yeo ran behind his
player and took an advantage before kicking – if he had’ve passed it wouldn’t have been a four-pointer. Conceding 20 points in quick time to finish the game wasn’t very Melbourne-like, but they very much deserved their win. Smith gave Penrith a masterclass in staying composed no matter the situation. Halfback Jahrome Hughes was fantastic, as was Papenhuyzen, while five-eighth Cameron Munster just did his job. If someone said a few years ago that the Storm would win another premiership after legends Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater left, I don’t think many would have believed it. But Craig and Cameron continue to find new ways to win. And this time it was in extraordinary circumstances given they’ve been based on the Sunshine Coast since June due to COVID-19’s impact. I’ve praised the Warriors for saving the competition and so many jobs with what they scarified this season, but Melbourne are right there with them. The Storm don’t always get their due credit or accolades because they’re forever at the top. It’s tall-poppy syndrome - many people want to see someone else win. Tough love L
ife as a tradesman was ticking along quietly when Leon Stensholm experienced a series of traumatic events that would change the course of his life. Eight years ago, his older brother and best mate took his life by suicide. Following that, two of his clients took their lives and shortly after that, two of his closest friends. These five tragic deaths happened in a four-year period,

leaving Mr Stensholm at a crossroads. Turn left and sink into alcohol and depression or turn right and follow his calling. The former soccer player who had found success as a body builder realised it was in the gym, while pumping iron and releasing endorphins, that people found it easiest to talk. He found people naturally opened up and shared their struggles with depression and anxiety. He connected the
dots and realised his calling was to open his own gym and offer personal training combined with counselling, and has hit on a winning formula. He coaches around 70 clients a week, has written two books and is an in-demand public speaker. He’s equally comfortable speaking in the corporate world as he is in high schools and feels he has now discovered what he was put on earth to do.
“I’ve ended up a sort of accidental hero,” he says. “I was a shy kid and didn’t have any goals, no ambitions. My brother was the smart one, the good looking one… When he took his life, I was cruising… When Dean died, I thought, there’s more to life and more I can achieve.” As a body builder for the past 18 years, Mr Stensholm has won multiple Australian titles and has coached hundreds of body building clients to first place, but it was time to go deeper. He studied counselling and set up a private gym in Warana. “I realised people needed a safe space to talk,” he says. “I’ve had the gym for nearly five years now and hundreds of lives have been saved. I don’t open to the public. I found when I used to work in public gyms, people were never opening up to me and telling me what they were really thinking.” Mr Stensholm says he learnt the hard way how to recognise the signs of potential suicide and how to act fast. “I was caught off guard with my brother,” he says. “We didn’t see it happening. He told me a week before he was going to do it. Me being very uneducated about suicide back then, I didn’t believe him. I should have listened to him, made sure I followed through so he got the correct support. He had filled out a form to see a therapist, but didn’t complete it. If I had made sure things were followed through, things may have changed, may

PROFILE not have changed. But from that position, I went straight into proactive mode. I thought, either I can sink or swim.� Mr Stensholm went on to write a book, It’s How You Think, and has a second book on gratitude coming out in December. He’s bursting with energy and his mission in life is to help as many people as possible. “Probably 95 per cent of my clients have depression or anxiety,� he says. “About 80 per cent of my clients are females – they’re more inclined to open up and have a good conversation. It’s very hard to get guys to make that first step. “Some people want the help, but they’re not willing to change. I put in people’s minds from the get-go, we can have all the tools to help you move forward, but you’ve got to want to change today, so if you don’t want to, save your money and come back in three months. You’ve got to be pretty firm with people and sometimes a bit of tough love has to be given.� Mr Stensholm divides his business into three arms: straight bodybuilding and personal training; counselling; and public speaking. He’s already a popular speaker and with his powerful physique and tattoos, he cuts a striking figure on stage. He recently spoke at Glasshouse Christian College, talking to students about anxiety, goal setting, how to find inspiration and motivation.
“I’d say around 30 to 40 per cent were intrigued and a certain percentage were a bit unsure, but by the end I had most of their attention. They were very grateful at the end and a lot of them came up and said, ‘that was amazing, that’s something we’ve never heard before’. You’ve got to be relatable‌ I did some fitness training with them, did some runs, some pushups and raced with them. It was about building rapport to get them on side.â€? His future plans involve running evening programs for students at his gym, teaching life skills, self-care, gratitude, resilience, the effects of social media, bullying and how to overcome adversity. “I’ll also teach them about exercise and nutrition and how to control the things you can control in life. You can’t control a bully, for example, but you can control how you respond,â€? he says. “A couple of friends have lost 12and 13-year-olds to suicide. If all these parents at the moment are going through such hardship, how are they going to identify their kids are going through hardship as well? “Being able to educate children sits deep in my heart now. That’s where everything has to start. We need to educate kids as there are a lot of mental health concerns at the moment. If parents aren’t doing too well, the kids have no chance.â€?

TURNING LESS NEGATIVE ON BANKS
O
rd Minnett has argued for several years that Australian banks faced too many challenges and it was difficult to be positive on the sector. However, with the sector down another 20 per cent this year, and signs some headwinds are easing, we think the sector has neared a bottom both in terms of earnings and share prices. The banks are not totally out of the woods – low interest rates are keeping pressure on net interest margins and competition still intense – but there are a few reasons why the banks may be close to the bottom: • Loose fiscal policy – The federal budget in October was indirectly beneficial for the banks. The support measures provided to small business, such as temporary full
expensing, enhanced asset write-offs and utilisation of losses, and households, like personal income tax cuts and assistance to first homebuyers, should improve cash flows in both sectors of the economy. We think this reduces the risk around significant loan impairments stemming from COVID-19. The banks have also received support from the RBA through its term funding facility, which provides them with access to three-year funding at a low rate of 0.25 per cent to support business lending. • Improving regulatory backdrop – After many new regulations being applied to the sector, we think the coming year will see some reprieve. It now appears the policy backdrop is turning in their favour, with the RBA expressing concerns that the pendulum has swung too far against banks, and that the banks have become too scared to lend. The proposal to repeal ‘Responsible Lending Obligations’ from the National Consumer Credit Protection Act is an attempt to remove some impediments to the flow of credit post the pandemic. • Resilient credit growth and house prices – Housing finance commitments rose 19 per cent year-on-year in August, likely helped by low interest rates and support for first homebuyers. House prices in Australia have also held up better than expected, with capital city house prices down three
per cent from their highs this year. Loan repayment deferrals are also edging down. Commonwealth Bank recently provided an update to September showing the percentage of home loan balances on deferrals had fallen from 10.8 per cent in June to 8.0 per cent, while the percentage of small business loan balances deferred had fallen from 28.4 per cent to 7.7 per cent. • Improved valuation metrics – All banks, with the exception of CBA, are trading at or below book value. Value stocks have been poor performers for some time. If there is a rotation back into value stocks as an economic recovery takes hold, the banks should do well given they trade at wide price-earnings multiple discounts to the broader market. There would also be more buying if institutional investors were to close their underweight position in the financials sector. Our forecast for dividends over FY21 now implies dividend yields (before franking) of around four per cent to 4.5 per cent for the four major banks We maintain a preference for major banks over the regional players. WHO SHOULD PAY FOR EFTPOS CHARGES?
I noted your It’s Your Page note to readers suggesting we could have our say on roads, rates and rubbish... I think it’s all been said so instead, I am sharing Monday morning’s stunning cloud-covered sky. It was like walking under a gigantic opening fan. We are certainly fortunate to call the Sunshine Coast home. I suppose I could mention rubbish – it’s often left lying around and we should treat our big beautiful backyard with respect, shouldn’t we? It is interesting to note that many businesses (particularly cafes and restaurants) are quite happy to expect their customers to pay their business EFTPOS charges. Surely this expense is just one of the many days-to-day expenses that a business is subjected to. Of late, some are just adding the surcharge to the bill with nothing said unless the customer questions the additional charge. This is compounded by some businesses not accepting cash, thereby leaving the customer without any other option than to use EFTPOS. What next, a surcharge to help pay the power and telephone bills or the rates?

FAIR PAY FOR COUNCIL CEO CARS THAT DON’T SLEEP Chris from Buderim you are not alone (MWP 22/10). Hoons driving around Little Mountain often wake us up late evening/early morning. They roar past in daylight but with the front door shut, that isn’t so bad. Nothing beats a good sleep.
Thank you, Linda, for bringing the CEO’s pay rate to our attention (MWP 22/20). As a resident of Mooloolaba, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Our rates could be far better used. It always amuses me that CEOs are paid incredible salaries, but the work is largely controlled and completed by everyday working class employees. This is not acceptable. The Prime Minister of Australia is paid a total salary of $550,000 per annum and his duties and responsibilities are available for all to see. Please do the same. We are all doing it tough in the real world.

CAN OUR LEADERS BE HUMAN? I aspire to be a brave leader with heart – one that people can relate and connect to. I want to be brave enough to be authentic and for that not to minimise my capability to get the job done. Watching the New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian these last few weeks has really made me think about the human side of leadership and what makes a truly effective leader. It made me pick up one of my favourite leadership books again – Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. She believes that bringing your human side to work creates a better culture. The story of the premier’s love affair has brought a human element to her image as a notorious workaholic, and some of us feel empathy and others surprise. Why did she feel a need to hide her love? Was it for safety, pride or did it conflict with our image of a strong, capable female who has dedicated her life to her work? I am not making comment on whether she was privy to the wrongdoings and did not speak up, instead, I am interested in seeing a more human side as a result of these revelations. To me she now seems more real, more relatable, more authentic. I feel her
struggle and empathise with the mistakes she may or may not have made. Is she allowed to be human and a premier? Can she lead with her head and still show her heart? Does this mean you do not have to give up your life for the job? Is that a better role model for our future generations? In search of that answer you naturally look at the parallel with another powerful female political leader, Jacinda Ardern. She has led New Zealand through a terrorist attack, a natural disaster, and a global pandemic, and has done so focusing on kindness and compassion. She is considered to be the most human politician around. Is that the secret to successful leadership an ability to balance head and heart? You might be forgiven for believing that when she won the election by a landslide, the largest vote share since 1930. Was part of her success that she is human, that she connects with us as a kind and compassionate leader, as a mother, and a wife? Ms Ardern leads with her head and shows her heart, she balances love and friendship and motherhood effortlessly and I believe that is what makes her so likeable and capable. Ms Berejiklian has led with strength and courage through the pandemic and her political career tells a story of great capability. I wonder if she gets through this experience will we see a discerning change in her leadership style. Will she feel brave enough to show a little more heart and will we respect and honour that? With our state election looming, I am looking for a brave leader with heart that has a proven track record of kindness and an understanding of what is important to our community. A political leader who is human, someone who is brave enough to give me a glimpse into who they are.

CHANGE AND RELATIONSHIPS When we enter a relationship, we are consumed with love for the other person. We believe this love will last for eternity regardless of how awful we become. Sadly, we all go through an awful stage. Whether it’s when we have the flu, or a more severe illness or when we go through a “change”. People may move to their favourite travel destination for the perfect life in the sun. People change jobs, study, lose weight, take up a hobby. People choose to have children. We naively believe that our love will carry us through all these experiences with ease. This is not the case. I have seen many relationships fall apart because of wonderful changes that have occurred. People lose sight of the importance of demonstrating love as well as feeling it. Let’s just focus on one of the most significant changes in our lives: having a baby. Quite often, the first year is hell. I have seen some parents get into a state of, ‘I have to be the perfect parent’. That can create a divide between them and their partner as their lover is turned into the other parent of the baby, who is quite often viewed as an incompetent and unhelpful part of the team.
But imagine someone watching their partner obsessing over every detail of parenting and constantly being selfcritical. Imagine that person also being expected to comply with all the regulations of perfect parenting that are demanded of them by their partner who has decided what these regulations are. The more relaxed partner cannot meet these standards. They are, however, not allowed to disagree. During the first year, parents can be extremely hard on themselves and each other. If you want a bit of perspective, talk to the parent of a bunch of children. Quite likely they have got to the point where the last child is left to raise itself or be raised by the haphazard approach of its siblings. I am a product of such parenting and while I admit that this information is enough to warn everyone off the approach, I haven’t turned out too badly. It hurts me to see new parents drive themselves into a state of despair and depression because of these high expectations. I highly recommend that parents be more relaxed and work more in partnership when they are raising a baby. Please find yourself a reliable babysitter and go out and have fun with each other. Remember that none of this happens without your partner. Continue to treat them in a loving way. Watch out for the resentment building and stop it. Laugh at your mistakes and enjoy your child and enjoy the learning experience and get lots of sleep whenever you can. Don’t let that baby become a wedge in the relationship and cause it to self-destruct. Don’t let changes destroy your relationship. It is important to work together and compromise to keep a relationship healthy.

Scott Morrison’s assertion that someone who earns $180,000 isn’t necessarily wealthy has Sami Muirhead wondering, what makes a person rich?
A
t the time of writing, the state election is in full swing and concludes tomorrow, but if it’s anything like the council elections, it will drag on for weeks. Personally, I have nothing against our local state politicians, who are all quite approachable and endeavour to do the right thing. In saying that, with COVID-19 and the year we’ve had and what is ahead with the federal deficit, now would probably be a good time to get rid of a tier of government to save some cash. I have always believed a state government could be achieved by a parliament full of mayors headed by state CEO, which would free up an amazing amount of money. They could even save more money and make the governor the chair of the gaggle of mayors. That would be half a million better spent than him pinning medals on people at morning teas at Government House. But none of that will happen. It is what it is. However, one plus out of current conditions was when I pre-polled the other day I didn’t have to walk through a barrage of pamphlet spruikers.
One of the topics of the election that has piqued my interest has been each party’s thoughts on assisted death. It is a very polarising subject and everyone has a right to an opinion. Mine is that I am definitely in favour of it but really the decision should be for the individual, their doctor and their family. I was sadly reminded about this about 18 months ago when I went to visit a mate who had a bloody terrible debilitating disease where towards the end there was no hope. He had put up a huge fight, but it was a fight he couldn’t win. Sitting in his lounge with his ageing little dog on his lap, we were talking about this exact subject, assisted death. He said to me that it was ironic that when it came time for his best little mate to go he would mercifully get the green dream but he would be left to suffer to the end. Where was the sense in that? That was one of the hardest conversations I have ever had. I’m not brave and I would know when to draw stumps on my life to stop the suffering. I hope we have some brave politicians make the right decision, which is to let those that matter make theirs.

ow much money do you have to earn to be considered ‘rich’? I have been pondering this question since our Prime Minister Scott Morrison came under criticism for saying those who earn $180K a year are not necessarily rich. When I was a teenager, I thought people who could buy spirits at Fridays nightclub were rich. In my twenties, people who could afford an entree and a main meal were rolling in it. If you paid for your friend’s coffee, you were more than likely rich. In my thirties, anyone who could travel business class was rich and now I’m in my forties I think rich means people who can eat avocados and organic food at least three times a week and wash it down with wine that costs more than $30 a bottle. So let’s just put aside how much debt you have and where in Australia you live because that clearly affects if you are rich or not, and have some fun by clearly defining ‘the rich people’ of our great land. Nothing against rich people, good luck to them I say. But clearly you are doing okay if you do not have to look at your bank balance when you withdraw $100. If you
are buying white grapes and limes and don’t flinch at the bill. If you drink wine with a cork. If you eat salmon for breakfast. Other things that are a dead giveaway: You play polo. You have a fridge with a crushed ice machine built into it. You prefer to drink boutique gin sourced from Byron Bay. You know what organic bamboo sheets feel like against your skin. You have matching Audis. You only wear Lululemon. I asked my kids what makes someone rich. My nine-year-old said someone is rich who can buy three guinea pigs every week and a thousand scrunchies. My six-year-old said rich people have stairs in their homes and you are wealthy if you have a butler. And my eight-year-old said you are rich if you can have a daily buffet for breakfast and you have a basketball ring in your home. My husband probably nailed it – he says you’re rich if you buy a coffee and do not have your loyalty card stamped in the hope for that elusive free 10th coffee. Rich to me is having good friends. Being surrounded by love. Having great mental health. Having dogs at my feet and a happy future with long-term plans. Having the ocean at my door. And maybe cold champagne, fresh prawns and that butler.

No plans to slow down for this golf-loving centenarian WORDS: CAITLIN ZERAFA
U
pon meeting Buderim’s Mary Haddon you will encounter a sprightly, fit, independent woman with a wonderful sense of humour and adventure. Little would you know this golf-loving social butterfly is turning 100. “I don’t know where those 100 years have gone,” Mrs Haddon says. “To me it’s just another birthday.” Mrs Haddon celebrated a century of life on October 29 and says she has no secret – it is all in the genes. “One aunty lived till she was 108 and a lot of [family] lived into their late nineties. You know, it’s in the genes on both sides of the family so it’s inevitable it seems.” A regular at Maroochy River Golf Club, Mrs Haddon plays twice a week and is the only living life member of the club. “I’ve always played sport of some kind – hockey at school and tennis before I took up golf. “Now I play Tuesdays and Thursdays – I’ve been hitting a golf ball for about 60 years. It’s just wonderful to be out there playing.” Mrs Haddon says she has always lived a good, happy life with her late husband Don, son John, who now lives in Thailand, five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren, members at the golf club
and friends at Immanuel Gardens. “I couldn’t live without people around; I really love people,” she says. Mrs Haddon grew up on the New South Wales south coast and moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1982. “I’ve seen so many changes, and my husband used to say nobody will see as many changes in their lifetime as we will in ours.” She worked for the Bureau of Census and Statistics, in retail and as a taxi driver in Sydney. An enthusiastic traveller, Mrs Haddon has kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, dog sled in Alaska and sky-dived over the Coast for her 80th birthday. She was still regularly visiting her son in Thailand well into her late nineties. Despite being 100, Mrs Haddon says she does not feel her age and takes no medication, but insists on a daily magnesium, calcium and vitamin D tablet. She was forced to give up driving at 98 after her eyesight began deteriorating. Mrs Haddon has a busy time ahead with four birthday celebrations and admits she will be “partied out”, but is grateful for everyone in her life who is celebrating with her. She has no plans to slow down and looks forward to more years on the golf course and doing what she loves with her friends.

A
fter a long struggle to build a permanent home, the blokes at Maroochy Men’s Shed are eagerly awaiting the move into their new location. The men’s shed was established eight year ago with 12 members. It has grown to 100 members who work out of a temporary
base with a carport as a meeting room and impractical outdoor camp-style kitchen. Member John Hocking says they have been looking for land for five years and it was only through generous local donations and a federal grant that they were able to purchase a block on Depot Street in Kuluin two years ago. They had to jump through
several hoops with the council and worked hard to fund the project, but Mr Hocking says the need for a bigger, permanent location has been there for some time. “This whole [new workspace] area is five time bigger than what we already have,” he says. Mr Hocking, who will be 90 in two months, says if it were not for the men’s shed, he would not be here today. “I’m a recluse and this is my outlet and that applies for another hundred men. “I would never have got this far without this shed; oh it’s been marvellous. The connection with other people; oh we have a tonne of fun. It is just wonderful.” The Maroochy Men’s Shed works at the Fishermans Road Markets on behalf of the Mooloolaba Lions Club and regularly helps the local community. “We recently erected the bike racks for the Mooloolaba Ironman,” Mr Hocking says. “It was crazy; we had to build bike racks for 1200 people. “We’ve done everything and more to be kind to people and that’s what the men’s shed is all about. “We do things for all the kindergartens; we do toys for the kids, we make seats, we do anything for anybody and all we ask for is a donation.” The shed is expected to open in November. Senior Constable Sandy Atkinson says crimes of this nature are a great concern to the community, as stolen number plates are often used by offenders to make their identification more difficult to determine when they are committing other crimes. “This year, there have been 339 number plate thefts reported in the

Region’s Year 12 students face final exams
Dryburgh, the beginning of the year held a sense of excitement and nerves as they began preparing for what lay ahead. Now as they enter their final exam block, both are somewhat grateful for the challenge of this year and how it has forced them to adapt and reflect. “COVID has given me perspective,” Faith says. “Real life in not a little bubble [like
school] where you can plan every little thing.” Despite missing a period of face-toface learning and uncertainly clouding graduation, Faith says she feels her cohort is one of the lucky few who have only had to deal with a minor “hiccup” in their learning. “We had so much support from the school, friends and our families and we even had our formal and graduation, even if they were modified a bit,” Faith says. “I have a lot of gratitude for the little impact it has had.” Charles says the time away from the classroom gave him a clear idea of where he wanted to go in the future. “I think quarantine helped me discover what I really wanted out of life and what I really wanted myself to become,” he says. “I think I’ve come out this end of the year better than I could have hoped.” Both Faith and Charles feel prepared for their busy exam block as the first group of Queensland students to filter through the newly adopted ATAR system, which replaces the old OP model. “A bit of stress and anxiety I think is normal, but I think I didn’t expect to feel as ready,” Charles says. “I’ve put in the work; I’ve worked so hard this year and I’m just ready.” With a passion and talent for music, Charles has applied to study at a few universities next year. Faith has already been accepted to study a science degree majoring in neuroscience and philosophy in Sydney for 2021.

What’s in the name Marcoola? Do you know how Marcoola received its name? Well, it is so called because of its geographical position between Maroochydore and Coolum, therefore Marcoola. Before 1953, Marcoola and neighbouring areas on the north shore were regarded as part of Bli Bli. In February 1953, following inspection of the proposed bridge across the Maroochy River at Bli Bli (the David Low Bridge) the Maroochy Shire Council approved three sections of the new six-mile beach on the north shore of Maroochy for development. Immanuel’s Interact Club shares the love

ake sales, sausage sizzles, pie drives and roses for Valentine’s Day are how Immanuel Lutheran College’s Interact Club, or junior Rotary, has made $5400 for its six causes and charities in 2020. Principal Colin Minke says in what has been a difficult year for local business, the
Immanuel community has opened its hearts – and wallets – to those less fortunate. “Immanuel is such a giving community and through Interact, we have three school-based causes and three charities that we support,” he says. “Students have fundraised in what was a particularly challenging year due
to COVID-19. Initially, they had bake sales, sausage sizzles and sold roses on Valentine’s Day. However, they then had to think creatively as the ‘new normal’ set in. But their thinking never wavered from ‘how can we make a difference to sick children, drought-stricken farmers, people who need help’.” The school supports the Cherbourg community in northern Queensland, a disability centre in North Sumatra, the Story Dogs literacy program, the Fiver for a Farmer campaign and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Mr Minke says it also supports Nambour’s Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, where students regularly help serve meals. Interact president and Year 12 student Jack Trentepohl and Mooloolaba Rotary Club Mentor Cathy Wright recently presented the cheques to the various charities. “Our students do a phenomenal job, as does mentor Cathy Wright from the Mooloolaba Rotary Club and teacher mentor Kirsten Zweck,” Mr Minke says. Interact is an international Rotary initiative where students raise money for causes with support from their local Rotary branch. Immanuel’s Interact Club has 70 members from years seven to 12.

NAB closes in Buderim NAB customers in Buderim will need to travel elsewhere to complete face-toface banking after the local branch announced it will close its doors on November 18. NAB Queensland general manager Paul Collins says the decision has been made as the bank continues to adapt to the changes in how customers interact with their banking. “Customers are coming into branches less and increasingly using digital banking, with more than 90 per cent of our customer interactions now taking place online or by phone,” he says. “We have been in contact with customers who bank at the Buderim branch to inform them of the closure and advise them of the alternatives available.” Mr Collins say customers can visit the branches at Maroochydore or Kawana Shoppingworld.

Buderim Craft Cottage president Kay Weber Buderim Craft Cottage Association and Conondale Public Hall Committee are set to benefit from a share in $823,200 thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s latest Major Grants program. Craft Cottage president Kay Weber says its $30,000 grant will allow the association to expand its building to provide office space and storage. “We now have 350 members so the entire space we currently use is at capacity,” she says. “We’ve outgrown many temporary office spaces over the years. Being a craft club we have a great deal of items we also need to store securely. We can now store more tables
and chairs as well. That will come in handy for some of our major events we collaborate with our community groups on, such as the Buderim Christmas Fair.” Conondale Public Hall Committee treasurer Lois White says its $9374 grant will help re-stump the hall and restore its windows. “The hall is nearly 90 years old. It doesn’t take much to run it, but we’d love to get it back into full use where it’s the heart of the community,” Ms White says. “This will hopefully help breathe some life back into it, make it safe and compliant and be available to many community groups and wedding bookings each year.”

hat’s set to become the “heartbeat” of the growing Birtinya area is already gaining support from locals as the Coast’s newest entertainment venue announces its opening date. NightQuarter will open on November 6, bringing with it colour, food and music in the new Stockland precinct. Owner’s Michelle Christoe and Ian Van der Woude have been working through many setbacks to have the venue finally open to the public and say thousands have shown their interest. “We’re so excited and we’ve had a fantastic reaction from the local community,” Ms Christoe says. “We have over 5000 people already registered to come to our opening weekend. “The opening weekend has a whole range of different types of activations from raising music to new heights … we have

A
social dancing group has raised hundreds of dollars for breast cancer research after donning their best pink outfits at a recent fundraising event. Landsborough dancers from Dance 4 Me Health and Fitness raised more than $626 for the cause, having fun along the way. Owner and director Amie Burt has been running the classes for a year and says they are social and place for “a wiggle and a giggle”. “It’s all about fun,” Ms Burt says. “It’s very social a place to build friendships.” With 25 years’ dancing experience, Ms Burt runs classes across the region at Landsborough, Golden Beach and Bellvista. “I love teaching, especially the 40-plus age group. “I have so many people tell me it is the highlight of their week.” Ms Burt says where possible she holds fundraising events to help local charities, having also supported the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in the past.
“We love fundraising for a good cause,” she says. “We have fun but I still work them hard.” Ms Burt says the classes are more about fun than “getting all the steps right” and the group often catches up for a post-class social coffee and monthly lunches. Her dance classes include Zumba,

It’s in the bag Boomerang Bags Caloundra is a group of like-minded people who come together on the second Wednesday of the month to sew, connect and have a bit of fun while repurposing material that would otherwise end up in landfill into bags. Lynne Baker (pictured) says the group formed in May 2016 by a handful of interested mums. “Our aim is to reduce pollution in the environment by
replacing plastic bags,” she says. “We find this very empowering – we’re taking action and making a contribution to supporting our environment. “We now have members from a range of age groups and backgrounds coming together to make the bags.” Since forming, the groups has made more than 10,880 bags.
Sunshine Coast police are responding to a spike in number plate thefts across the region. Senior Constable Sandy Atkinson says crimes of this nature are a great concern to the community, as stolen number plates are often used by offenders to make their identification more difficult to determine when they are committing other crimes. “This year, there have been 339 number plate thefts reported in the Sunshine Coast Police District, with 16 of those incidents occurring in October.” Police are urging all vehicle owners to secure their number plates with one-way screws, which cannot be removed with conventional tools. One-way screws are available for purchase from leading auto retailers, or you can drop into your local police station for further information to prevent number plate theft.

Sunshine Coast Stadium expansion boost
I
t has hosted the likes of Elton John and Melbourne Storm, and now Sunshine Coast Stadium’s $68 million expansion has received a welcome funding announcement. Regardless of the result of this weekend’s state election, $20 million in Queensland government funding has been promised for stage one of the expansion. Mayor Mark Jamieson says this year has shown just what the stadium can offer and the expansion will allow the region to
lock in more events as it continues to grow. “With the stage one expansion, we can increase the fixed seating capacity to 11,618 seats and thus accommodate around 16,618 patrons at the venue under normal operating conditions.” With $17 million in council founding and the state announcement, Mayor Jamieson says he is now looking to the federal government to pitch in. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says the time has come to host bigger
games and acts. “I have been fighting for federal government funding to help make that a reality over the past year,” he says. “I have already had several meetings with federal ministers about the project and I will continue to advocate for funding.” The expansion is part of a plan for the longer-term stadium development, which will see the venue increase to between 20,000 and 25,000 seats delivered in time for the a potential 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Queensland Games.

The humble beginnings of popular Moffat Beach Did you know Moffat Beach was named after James C Moffat, a chemist from Brisbane, who established a holiday cottage there in 1883? In 1887 Mr Moffat formed a land syndicate and after a small land sale, the balance of the land was raffled among the members of the syndicate with areas going in proportion to the individual’s capital invested. Moffat’s high point, overlooking the ocean, was the most desired portion to win and Moffat himself was the winner of the prized headland.

I’d like to start by congratulating Sunshine Coast Council’s Traffic and Transportation team who have successfully achieved $930,000 in grant funding via the state government’s School Transport Infrastructure Program. The funding will be used to deliver a variety of projects including pedestrian crossing facilities, end-of-trip facilities and pathway upgrades for eight schools across the region. I am also pleased to announce that the Hot 91 Ferris Wheel attracted a staggering 91,000 people to Caloundra over the past few months – a great achievement for the Caloundra business community and a big step forward for the economic recovery of our region. On September 30, the state government announced $7 million in funding, adding to $4.2 million in council funding towards an $18.2 million extension of the Third Avenue to Nicklin Way extension – an essential first phase in delivering a much-needed alternative access into the Caloundra CBD. This upgrade is a priority for improving access into the Caloundra CBD and will benefit the community both now and into the future. Unity College student wins entrepreneurial award WORDS: CAITLIN ZERAFA
A
Year 11 student is planting the seeds for her entrepreneurial future as her new business venture continues to grow. Unity College’s Millie Gallacher recently took out first place in the 2020 Binnacle Boss competition for Queensland high school students. The competition is a chance to empower students who have a knack for business, where they present a short video pitch of their start-up idea. Teacher Gillian Meyers says Millie, who is studying a certificate III in business and taking the ATAR business subject as part of her studies, won the competition with her fabric plant pouch initiative. “Millie loves fabric,” Ms Meyers says. “She created pouches to germinate seeds in and then plant in the ground. Basically, you fill the pouches with soil and seeds and water them. One they start to sprout you
plant them in the ground and the fabric is biodegradable and disintegrates.” Ms Meyers says Millie won a series of mentorships to help her take her business to the next level. “Millie says it’s been exciting.” Her plans now are to develop the product to create fabric pot plants to help minimise plastic use. The school’s Year 11 fresh foodies group also placed third in the competition. Ms Meyers says the group produces caramelised balsamic vinegar, which it sells from the student co-op shop on campus. The students are all part of Unity College’s studentpreneur program, which allows them to safely test and trial products and develop strategies to help market and sell. She says after their recent success, Ms Meyers will work with the students to stretch their business boundaries and see how far they can go in their Year 12 studies next year.

Work begins on road Just weeks after it was announced work would begin to connect Aura to the Bruce Highway, shovels have hit the grounds on Bells Creek Arterial Road. Funding for safety upgrades to Steve Irwin Way Steve Irwin Way is set to receive safety upgrades as part of the federal and state governments’ $415 million economic stimulus package. Department of Transport and Main Roads director-general Neil Scales says $18 million will be spent on safety works between Beerburrum and Palmview. “The works will involve widening the road, installing wide centre lines, clearing roadside hazards like vegetation and installing dedicated right-turn lanes,” Mr
Scales says. “We have prioritised these works on the section between Landsborough and Beerwah.” A works program will be rolled out progressively as each design package is finalised. Mr Scales says the improvements are estimated to support 58 direct jobs over the life of the project. The federal government is contributing $14.4 million to the project, with the state government contributing $3.6 million.

Modules were transported from Saltair’s operation at Coolum Beach to Upper Rosemount and installed in a single day. Follow-on installation of the staircase to connect the upper floor was subsequently completed on site.

RENOVATED KITCHEN The client settled on the design by removing the walls in between the dining and kitchen to make the space a much more usable and workable area. The brief to Cabinet House was to design an elegant kitchen that was minimalist with no handles that would allow for integrated appliances and use maximum storage capability. The owner wanted the large windows to be a feature, so this removed the overheads along this wall. He also had purchased the New York marble tiles that would be the feature for the space and be wrapped around the MDF bulkhead which was crafted for the rangehood.
OUTDOOR PROJECT For this recently renovated two-story terrace home in Noosa Heads, the client’s brief to Contemporary Landscaping was to create a modern, low maintenance space together with a tropical courtyard garden and plunge pool. The 64m2 courtyard now features the plunge pool and stone feature wall with stainless steel waterspouts. Additionally there is the outdoor stainless-steel shower and tropical plantings, along with an entertainment and barbecue area. The project included a relocation of the front gate, which meant removing a section of the wall and replacing with a new section of wall.
KITCHEN OF THE YEAR This sophisticated yet minimalistic kitchen was designed to embody adequate space efficiency, functionality and flow to enable people to entertain and interact with family and friends while preparing food. Built by Dayne Lawrie Constructions, the striking natural marble stone island bench that lies central has been designed with an inbuilt sink and dishwasher, but also operates as a hub to socialise. It provides the ultimate connection between the kitchen and the adjacent open plan living spaces. This kitchen embodies many notable features such as German engineered NEFF appliances, custom recessed LED lighting that runs directly into the butler’s pantry/laundry, Tasmanian oak timber ceiling and wrap around void that matches the custom timber oak handles.
RENOVATIONS/ ADDITIONS $300,001 – $600,000 Smart Choice Homes created a stunning Hampton’s style renovation. With the home positioned only steps from the beachfront, the clients opted for a grand summer Hamptons home. The owner chose colour palettes of white, ivory and neutral colours, creating a bright and airy coastal feel. When it came to achieving the authentic Hamptons style, it was all in the details. The owners did a great job of selections, incorporating elegant cornices and moulding. Pendant lights in traditional shapes were chosen in the kitchen and bathrooms, classic taps ware installed, intricately bordered mirrors, and internal doors with window trims helped create the classic look and timber flooring throughout the home was the perfect finish. Every window was removed and replaced. VJ panelling was added around the home to continue the feel through the house and the bathrooms had an old-world twist.

SUPPORT WORKERS IN HIGH DEMAND ON THE COAST Steps offers an educational pathway towards gaining a career as a service provider.
D
isability support workers are in high demand across the Sunshine Coast, with more and more people accessing NDIS services in 2020. STEPS community services manager Josh Hansen says opportunities are plentiful in the support work sector. “We’re having trouble getting experienced staff and we currently have a huge opportunity on the Coast for anyone looking to get into the industry,” Mr Hansen says. “If you jump on SEEK at the moment there are 344 support worker roles available right here on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “On January 9 this year we had 57 clients and now we’re at 130.” STEPS provides a Certificate 3 in individual support (ageing and disability) courses right here on the Sunshine Coast and guides students from enrolment, through the learning modules, into placement and finally into a rewarding paid position with high level graduate outcomes. “It’s an industry that’s like no other as

every day can be totally different,” he says. With the influx in new clients and a shortage of skilled support workers on the Coast, Mr Hansen suggests now is the time if you’ve thought about a change. “If you ever thought about entering or changing your career pathway to get into support work, now is the time.” “We’ve got ex-electricians, ex-service
workers that have come on board with us without any previous skills in this area and we’ve been able to train them up and get their skills right up there; now they’re some of our best support workers,” says Mr Hansen. “Once you get into the industry, you find a lot of manoeuvrability as well,” he says. “You can go down the disability
support pathway, you can work with people who have autism or move into leadership and management roles.” The industry is certainly for those looking for a hands-on role where no two days are the same. “It’s not an office job or a job where you’re coming to work and it’s repetitive, you’re working with people and there are many different aspects involved,” Mr Hansen says. “It’s very rewarding, It really is what you make of it,” he says. “There’s been some great success stories out of the NDIS.” Are you interested in becoming a support worker? I
nvesting in Sunshine Coast residential property is a good strategy contends 30-year veteran investor Jack Childs of Think Investment Realty. He believes the Coast offers some good opportunities and better value than Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Add to that, prices aren’t going backwards Mr Childs forecasts, not when there is not enough supply in some areas and rental demand continues to be strong. So, it’s a great time to buy. But property takes time he counsels. “Investing in property is not a get-richquick scheme,” Mr Childs says. “It’s more about time in the market rather than timing the market.” Choosing to buy for capital growth versus rental return comes down to each person’s individual circumstances and goals. “One thing I have learnt over the years is that if it has high yield, it usually has high risk,” he warns. A good place to start the journey is new apartments such as the ones in the new Maroochydore CBD and Sippy Downs and new houses in Nambour.
“It’s worth remembering the Coast breaks up into a lot of different markets,” says Mr Childs. “The Caloundra market, for example, can be in a completely different growth phase to the Maroochydore or Nambour markets.” Smaller, boutique-type blocks where there is a high percentage of owneroccupiers and lower body corporate costs are also on his investment radar.

The trick then is to buy and hold long-term. Townhouses are also becoming popular as house and land packages become more expensive and sizes decrease. With holiday let buildings he says capital growth isn’t usually strong and, “the expenses in the management take away a good chunk, often up to 50 per cent of the income, where with standard rentals the holding costs are usually between 10 and 20 per cent”. Reading market research relevant to the Coast, checking out what the developer and builder are offering, and consulting a property investment advisor and your bank manager, are good strategies before signing on the dotted line.

he contemporary apartment development Plaza Central in Maroochydore is now under construction, with work kicking off amidst a surge in homebuyer and investor interest in the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. he first residential project in the new Maroochydore CBD, Market Lane Residences, has proven to be an overwhelming success with more than 85 per cent of apartments in the first tower selling since the public launch early last month. Habitat Development Group director Cleighton Clark says he is confident the first tower will now be sold out before Christmas. “We’ve been surprised by the number of local buyers who appear to have gone to a lot of effort to educate themselves on the local property market and the benefits of owning property within the emerging new Maroochydore CBD,” he says. “We’re delivering a highly affordable, quality product to the market – the size of the apartments and their inclusions have really impressed buyers who have ranged from professional singles and couples to retirees and even some first homeowners who are taking advantage of the generous government grants, which

Grammar announces powerhouse new coach
Sunshine Coast Lightning coach Kylee Byrne says she’s excited to see what international athletes Phumza Maweni and Peace Proscovia can bring to the court next year after the pair re-signed with the club. The Sippy Downs-based club announced last week the influential Lightning bookends had put pen to paper for a third campaign in Sunshine Coast colours. The pair signed with the Lightning in late 2018 to fill the shoes of departing talents Geva Mentor and Caitlin Bassett and have enjoyed two successful seasons since. Ms Byrne says Ms Proscovia and Ms Maweni have adapted well to the demands of the elite Lightning environment and she expects continued improvement into season three. “Peace and Phumza have taken real strides since joining our club, embracing the professionalism and lift in standards required to thrive in the competition,” says Ms Byrne. “Now that they have that solid foundation and understanding, I’m excited to see how they can contribute further next season both on and off court. “We understand that the decision to live away from your family – particularly after a season like 2020 – is a massive sacrifice and we are so grateful to both players for remaining part of the Lightning family.” Ms Maweni was in dazzling form in 2020 working in tandem with fellow South African circle defender Karla Pretorius, the pairing proving to be a formidable force against opposition shooters. Despite multiple quarantine stints leading into the season, the goalkeeper was in peak physical condition, which only added to the 36-year-old’s consistent output.

ormer All Blacks winger Hosea Gear has been announced as the new head rugby coach of local powerhouse team Sunshine Coast Grammar. Mr Gear, who played 14 tests for the mighty All Blacks, will start next year under the direction of returning director of rugby, Dan Robotham. The winger has been a backs coach at the University Barbarians this season in the senior men’s competition. Mr Gear will join Grammar in a bid to continue to strengthen and develop a new era of rugby at the school as it prepares to launch the Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby Academy in the new year. Most recently, Mr Gear has been working as the Heartland head coach at Ngati Porou East Coast in New Zealand. A firm believer in culture, Mr Gear is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and coaching. Grammar has gone from strength to strength and this year took out the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Rugby Union Premiership for the third consecutive year. It was the school’s eighth title in the past nine years. “The Sunshine Coast Grammar School rugby program has continued to deliver excellent results over the years and the time has come to step it up a notch and take it to the next level,” says Mr Robotham.
“We are starting to see a strong sevens competition emerge, as well as a growing interest in girls’ rugby and we are keen to develop these programs further. “The focus of the Rugby Academy will be to deliver an outstanding rugby program and skill development opportunities for students on the Sunshine Coast, while fostering a strong culture of excellence.” Grammar has produced a pool of talented rugby players over the years,
including former Wallabies and ACT Brumbies lock Blake Enever and most recently the talented Queensland Reds scrum half Tate McDermott, who is currently in the Wallabies squad for the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championships. “We are excited to be launching the Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby Academy and Hosea Gear’s appointment will be welcomed by all in the local rugby community,” Mr Robotham says.

trio of Melbourne Storm international superstars have endorsed the Sunshine Coast as a region capable of having its own NRL team. Kangaroos representatives Cameron Munster and Josh Addo-Carr, and New Zealand’s Jahrome Hughes had nothing but praise for Sunshine Coast Stadium, the surrounding facilities and supporter base. A second Brisbane team, Redcliffe, Ipswich and the Central Coast of NSW are all vying to be the 17th NRL team. While the Sunshine Coast has plenty of ground to make up in the race for NRL expansion, these three are the latest in a long line of high-profile endorsements. Storm’s Queensland five-eighth Cameron Munster believes there’s a certain nostaglic style atmosphere created on the hill. “There’s a lot of speculation around Brisbane getting another team, but I can’t see why one can’t be located on the Coast,”
Mr Munster says. “It’s a great field here. “I’ve played here a fair few times with the (Central Queensland) Capras and Easts (Tigers) and always enjoyed it. “The hills kind of make it an old-school Leichhardt or Brookie. Then you have the nice stands of the stadium too.” In the six games the Storm played at the Bokarina-based venue in 2020, winger Josh Addo Carr crossed for nine tries. The off-contract star says there’s something special about the place. “It’s been packed every time, it’s been an absolute pleasure,” says Mr Addo-Carr. “I could definitely see it (a Coast-based team). That’s probably why the NRL let us play here. To give the fans what they want. It would be good for the game. “The crowd is always loud, passionate, not just Storm fans, the opposition too. It’s been pretty special to be honest.” Mr Munster’s halves partner Jahrome Hughes is no stranger to the area, having spent time at the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

TICKETEK BLUNDER LEAVES PUNTERS LOCKED OUT Thousands of patrons were left locked outside Suncorp Stadium as Ticketek experienced technical difficulties with tickets. The NRL’s Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders game kicked off at 6.50pm despite long lines remaining outside the stadium. Suncorp Stadium said they were aware of the issue and worked quickly to resolve them. “The Stadium worked to ensure that we had everyone in within seven to eight minutes after kick-off,” a spokesperson said. “This situation has never occurred in 17 years of the Stadium’s operation.” “We are working with our ticketing agent to identify the cause of the issue and to put measures in place to ensure this situation does not occur again.”
