From the editor I can’t help but feel a little bittersweet as I sit down to write this week’s letter from the editor. It comes at a time when My Weekly Preview is embarking on an exciting new chapter, and yet, it will be my last column for some time. As I begin maternity leave, I am handing the magazine over to acting editor Gail Forrer, who will help steer the publication forward. It has been close to four years since I took up this editorship and in that time the dedicated MWP team has worked together to continually improve the magazine for our readers and supporters. They truly are the best work family. From interviews with global and national celebrities to local identities, and
everyday people who make a huge difference within the community, it has been a pleasure to share story after story. Now we are taking that commitment even further by increasing our local news offering. T
he rise of clickbait media and fake news has jeopardised the integrity of Australian journalism. In a time when Australians are consuming more content, more often – directly linked to the advent of digital platforms – the team here at My Weekly Preview believe it is more important than ever to ensure that journalism functions successfully in its various forms. This is what the MWP team does on a weekly basis by engaging readers in healthy public debate and educating on issues of public and social significance. As an independently owned company, the MWP team is accountable first and foremost to the community. It has been 12 years since this magazine launched in a market that was monopolised by large media corporations. “We may be small, but we are mighty, proving our place in the community year after year,” says editor Candice Holznagel. “Our aim is clear: to provide free news, property and lifestyle content to the Sunshine Coast.” Now, My Weekly Preview is set to change the local news scene yet again with improved local news coverage. As of this week, readers will have access to three different versions of My Weekly Preview – southern, central/west and northern editions. These magazines will feature the sections that you know and love, including a feature read, profile, local news, lifestyle, puzzles, TV guide and property. Readers will also find an additional seven pages of hyper-local content specific to suburb location. “We are proud to have the opportunity to invest further in community news and to
fill the void for the Sunshine Coast community,” Ms Holznagel says. “From police rounds to school news, and everything in between, our team will be reporting on what matters within your region. We welcome readers to share their stories and news tips – no matter how big or small.” My Weekly Preview has added five new, experienced faces across the advertising and editorial teams to continue to deliver and grow the magazine as businesses and the community emerge from COVID-19. The editorial team now consists of deputy editor Leigh Robshaw, journalist Layne Whitburn, subeditor Jemma Pearson, production manager and lead designer Kath Hawkins, designers Anita McEwan, Morgan Earney, Leanda Grambower, newly-appointed journalist Caitlin Zerafa, and experienced acting editor Gail Forrer to replace Ms Holznagel who is taking maternity leave.
Meet Gail Forrer, acting editor Gail Forrer is a newspaper editor with more than 30 years of experience as a journalist across various publications on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. In her most current role, she served as group editor for the Seniors Newspaper Network. Ms Forrer was Noosa News editor for many of these years, where she gained commendations in the APN and PANPA awards. Her career highlights include editor of the inaugural Noosa Magazine and inaugural editor-in-chief of the Sunshine Coast Community Newspapers. Ms Forrer has contributed to radio news reports (4GY), commentary (ABC), and entertainment (Noosa Community
Caitlin Zerafa and Gail Forrer Radio), as well as serving on the board of various charities and foundations. In addition to her work as an editor, Ms Forrer is currently enrolled as a PhD candidate at Central Queensland University after completing a Masters degree in creative writing. Her graduating thesis was awarded the Dean’s Award of Excellence in Research. In 2017, Ms Forrer was named among the top 20 inspirational women on the Sunshine Coast by WINDO (Women Initiating New Directions). On a personal note, Ms Forrer spends a lot of time in Bali, plays with her two young granddaughters, frequents second-hand bookshops and enjoys a very well-made cup of coffee. Meet Caitlin Zerafa, journalist Caitlin Zerafa is the latest journalist to join the My Weekly Preview team. Ms Zerafa has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 15 years. She studied journalism at the University of the Sunshine Coast and spent two years working as a community journalist prior to joining the MWP team. In this role, she reported on a wide range of issues – everything from bushfires to feuding federal politicians and Bachelorette councillors, right down to human interest pieces. Pumicestone Passage Today, Golden Beach’s Pumicestone Passage is a favourite among fishermen, boaties, kayakers and swimmers. It was in1822 when a man named John Bingle, in the colonial cutter Sally, was sent from Sydney to seek a river believed to enter the sea somewhere north of Port Macquarie. Arriving at Point Skirmish on March 6, Mr Bingle took a boat party up the Passage and threaded his way through the mangroves and sand banks until he sighted the bar at Caloundra. O
n May 8 this year, a group of passionate beachgoers formed a protest group to challenge the design of Stage 6 of the M2M Mooloolaba to Maroochydore cycleway. The Beach Matters group opposes the six-kilometre cycleway, which they say will build unnecessary barriers to beach access both through the location of the cycleway and the demise of beachside car parks. They are also concerned about encroachment on green areas in the Okinja Road area. The Maroochydore (M2M) cycleway is designed to run from the Sunshine Motorway near the Mooloolah River, through Mooloolaba to the new Maroochydore City Centre at Maud Street in Maroochydore. The Queensland government has allocated $6.7 million for delivery of a 1.2-kilometre section of the project on Alexandra Parade from Mary Street at Alexandra Headland to Sixth Avenue at Maroochydore (Stage 6). In response to community demands, including Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson asking the state government to “pause and re-think”, the Department of Transport and Mains Roads (TMR) – who has partnered with

the Sunshine Coast Council – has extended consultation/feedback time to July 31.
PROTEST GROUP Beach Matters is a community-oriented group made up of residents, businesses, lifesavers, surfers, walkers, runners, cyclists, seniors and family groups looking to protect the safety and access beachgoers currently enjoy along the Alexandra Headland strip. Well-known Buderim author, business woman and keen surfer Rachael Bermingham says for the past couple of months, the group has reached out to the community to highlight the proposal and encourage feedback on the plan. The group has organised a beach rally, created a Facebook page, spoken to councillor Joe Natoli and worked with Ms Simpson. Ms Bermingham says more than 2500 people have signed the ePetition and the physical petition. They have received hundreds of feedback forms and it is estimated that around 1200 people attended this month’s beach rally against the plan. The group says the cycleway location and loss of beachside car parks will change the nature of this iconic surf beach. No longer will boardriders, families and general beachgoers have the benefit of
beachside parking for easy access. Instead, the design complicates existing access through the placement of barriers and the travel involved to get to the beach from relocated carparks. The group believes there has been a lack of community consultation and there is a general misunderstanding of cycleway usage. They want the public to know that

The design shows that M2M will encroach upon the Okinja Road beach access point, currently the most fragile stretch of beachfront in Queensland. They would prefer a widening of the
existing path running along the foreshore, which would lend itself to having the green cycle line run through it, thus creating a clearly defined, but shared space. They’re also calling for a reduction of the existing speed limit, redesign of the Okinja Road access area to give more space back to the dune region, and redesign of the cycleway so it goes through Nelson Park and doesn’t affect the majority of user groups.
SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL According to the council, the M2M cycleway conforms to the core element of the council’s Integrated Transport Strategy. The cycleway is seen to be a sustainable shift to reduced car dependence and increased physical activity. A council spokesperson says a change in transport habits can only come about if change is implemented through investment in alternatives to motor vehicles, while still recognising the significant role that mode plays. The council says the cycleway, by providing dedicated infrastructure, separated from cars, will encourage people to get out and use active transport options for their daily commute or recreation trip, helping to achieve the vision for the Sunshine Coast to be myweeklypreview.com.au

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS (TMS) TMS says the design provides a separated cycleway connecting Mooloolaba to Maroochydore. Additionally, the dedicated cycle facility (with a separated pathway) has been designed to reduce the need for interaction between motorists and people riding bikes on roads. Together with this, it will also reduce interaction between active transport users and pedestrians on the existing footpaths, improving safety, comfort and travel time for all users.
CAR PARKING IS IT COMING OR GOING? TMS says the preferred Stage 6 option may relocate up to 91 existing car parks along the Alexandra Headland foreshore area, which includes 79 parallel parks between Sixth Avenue and Mary Street at

Maroochydore, and 12 angle parks near the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club at Alexandra Headland. This parking impact of 91 spaces can be mitigated by providing around 111 new car park spaces in the corridor, resulting in a possible net gain of 20 car parking spaces as well as eight additional motorcycle parking bays. Short-term pick-up and drop-off bays are also being considered by the Sunshine Coast Council to increase the efficiency of the car parking in the area. One new car park is proposed to be built near the Seabreeze Caravan Park, with around 27 car spaces. Another new car park is proposed to be built next to Okinja Road with approximately 78 car park spaces. An additional six angle car parks will be reinstalled at the northern end of the Alexandra Headlands Surf Club carpark. Final word Let’s do it – and let’s do it right That’s the message from the Beach Matters group. The group is spot on. This cycleway design shapes the future of the unique iconic strip. There are no second chances. For the public to have an informed say, they need certain information. Firstly, the current artist’s impression (pictured) and others on the TMR website, need stronger detail to provide us with a clear vision and details spelled
out in, highlighting the areas where changes will have the most impact. Secondly, an extended consultation period is needed to enhance public awareness. Considering the current Stage 6 design will mean entirely different parking locations, resulting in longer travel distances, pedestrian street-to-beach access complicated with barriers and even less green space, particularly in light of future
light rail transport, alternatives need to be put on the table. The creation of cycleways is an important dimension of modern society. They are meant to provide health-giving benefits, not take away green space and complicate beach access. Perhaps an alternative cycleway location can do that, and understandably this will need more public consultation.

SCHOOL FUN RUN SET TO GO AHEAD After a disrupted year, the School Fun Run Crazy Colour Day will delight students. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.
T
he Sunshine Coast is set to become a sea of rainbows as this November, school kids from across the Coast will kick-start the month by participating in the School Fun Run Crazy Colour Day. It’s an initiative hosted by School Fun Run, an organisation helping to bring health, exercise and inclusion to school fundraising efforts around the country through its highly interactive and experiential events. This year, School Fun Run has launched a campaign for the occasion and has aptly called it Rainbow After the Storm, to help spread the word of the fundraising week and promote the colourful event to schools. Coast schools are encouraged to sign up to the program and help give the kids something to look forward to on the school calendar, following the impacts of COVID-19 and the disruption it has had. Brendan Hopp, director of School Fun Run, says he is looking forward to getting kids back outside and being active, interacting with their peers and teachers. “We can expect to see school children
covered in colour powder and looking like running rainbows, as they boost community spirit on the Sunshine Coast. It will be big laughs and happy little faces. “We want to show children that their future remains vibrant, bright, and colourful and we feel that a Crazy Colour Day at their school is the perfect way to achieve this.” Last year alone, schools around the country raised more than $9 million through the program, helping schools to
purchase much-needed items. Suncoast Christian College’s principal, Greg Mattiske says, “After everything that has happened this year, we are delighted to bring joy, fun and a sense of normality back to our students with our Crazy Colour Day. “We have held this event before and we think it’s a perfect way to achieve these outcomes while raising some extra funds for our school. I hope all schools join us in 2020 as we paint the Sunshine Coast rainbow. “Annually, the School Fun Run raises around $125,000 for Bruce and Denise Morcombe to continue their son’s legacy. “Each October on the Day for Daniel School Fun Run, kids from across the Coast get together to show their support.” With the return to classroom-based learning, School Fun Run is gearing up for the busiest last quarter of the year ever in its 33-year history of business.

NEWS in brief Big cow on the moove The Sunshine Coast’s famed Big Cow has found itself a new home. The eye-catching sculpture, which was built in the 1970s and became a local tourist attraction on a dairy farm through the ’80s, fell into disrepair in the early 2000s. The cow spent many years overlooking the old Bruce Highway at Kulangoor, north of Nambour. It has now been relocated to Toowoomba’s The Highfields Pioneer Village and Museum and it is expected $29,000 will be spent to restore the beast. Stay alert While face masks are now expected to be worn in Victoria, here in Queensland you don’t need to wear a mask unless advised to. The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to stay home if you are sick and wash your hands often. If you have been told to wear a face mask, remember that single-use masks must be thrown out if you cough or sneeze into it. Early intervention program to help prevent harmful sexual behaviours.
E
ducators and frontline professionals who work with at-risk children and youth have been provided a much-needed boost thanks to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s latest initiative, launched last week. The national early intervention program, Changing Futures, provides the tools necessary to prevent, identify and respond to harmful sexual behaviours in pre-teens. Research indicates 90 per cent of Australian educators believe existing mandatory reporting training does not equip them with adequate skills in this area, a Foundation spokesperson says.
As part of the program, the Foundation has partnered with key academic and leading therapeutic professionals within the fields of harmful behaviour and child protection, who will help build confidence, knowledge, and skill through a series of educational webinars, state and territory specific workshops, forums and practical resources. Daniel Morcombe Foundation founder Bruce Morcombe says, “It is the Foundation’s genuine hope that Changing Futures will help change the trajectory of children and young people displaying concerning harmful sexual behaviour. “Providing awareness, support, and education, we can help to ensure future children and young people are not impacted by sexual abuse.” The first webinar takes place on Wednesday, August 5. SHARK ATTACK VICTIM A “LOVING FAMILY MAN” Sunshine Coast father of two Matthew Tratt, who was killed by a shark off Fraser Island earlier this month, was remembered last Friday as a “loving family man”. Mr Tratt’s family and friends attended an emotional funeral service in Buderim to honour the keen fisherman. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the service was also livestreamed. The attack that took Mr Tratt’s life took place at about 2pm on Saturday, July 4, when 36-year-old Mr Tratt was spearfishing “for the fish of a lifetime” at Indian Head on the eastern side of Fraser Island. He suffered a bite to his leg and died from the injury about two-and-a-half hours later, police say. A doctor and nurse provided first aid to him on shore before paramedics arrived. It is one of five shark attacks to take place along the east coast in recent months.

SKILLS GET A $2B BOOST TO HELP JOB SEEKERS

early 350,000 young Australians who face entering the workforce in a recession will be able to learn new skills for free or nearly free if states sign up to a new billion-dollar training deal. The federal government unveiled a new skills package last Thursday for school leavers and people looking for work to take up courses in areas like health care, transport, manufacturing and retail. Prime Minister Scott Morrison is backing the plan with $500 million in commonwealth money, to be matched by the states, and has branded it JobTrainer.

“COVID-19 is unprecedented but I want Australians to be ready for the sorts of jobs that will come as we build back and recover,” he said. “The jobs and skills we’ll need as we come out of the crisis are not likely to be the same as those that were lost.” It’s expected the money will make a range of short courses delivered via TAFEs and private providers free for students. Other courses that lead to qualifications including Certificate III and IV and diplomas – more likely to be taken up by school leavers – would be subsidised. The new National Skills Commission will identify which specific skills shortages they should address that will be critical to Australia’s economic recovery. The commonwealth funding will hinge on the states signing up to a new overall vocational education agreement with the Morrison government. The prime minister said in May he wants this new deal to link funding to teaching the skills businesses actually need, simplifying the system, better coordinating subsidies and increased transparency. – AAP
QLD MOVES TO IMPRISON VIRUS RULE BREAKERS Queensland will move to imprison anyone caught breaking rules to prevent COVID-19 flare-ups as new cases surge in Victoria. Terms of up to six months behind bars were introduced to state parliament last Thursday under a legislative amendment designed to act as a deterrent. Fines for individuals have not been enough to stop them from testing the public health directions issued by chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young. The cities of Campbelltown and Liverpool have now been added to Queensland’s list of hotspots, along with Victoria where hundreds of new cases are being confirmed each day. Queensland Council for Civil Liberties has called on the government to release the draft bill and allow it to be debated publicly before it is presented to the house. – AAP
AUSTRALIAN-FIRST COVID TEST A BREAKTHROUGH Australian researchers have found a way to identify COVID-19 positive cases using blood samples in just 20 minutes. Researchers at Monash University in Melbourne have developed a simple test based on commonly used blood-typing methods. This test can rapidly pick up coronavirus, as positive cases cause red blood cells to cluster and this is easily identifiable to the naked eye. Researchers were able to identify COVID-19 cases using just 25 microlitres of plasma from blood samples. “This simple assay, based on commonly-used blood typing infrastructure and already manufactured at scale, can be rolled out rapidly across Australia and beyond,” study co-lead Simon Corrie says. The blood typing cards could be sent overseas to help speed up contact tracing and help verify vaccine efficacy in clinical trials. This new test can also determine if someone was infected with the virus even after it has resolved. Using a simple lab setup, medical practitioners could test up to 200 blood samples an hour. For some hospitals, this could rise to more than 700 blood samples every hour, or about 16,800 daily. – AAP

ustralia’s jobless rate has reached 7.4 per cent, the highest level in more than two decades, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison concedes the real situation is worse. Australian Bureau of Statistics data released last Thursday shows 69,300 jobs were lost in June as the official unemployment rate rose from 7.1 to 7.4 per cent. Senior government figures put the effective rate at more like 13.3 per cent. “The effective rate of unemployment is likely to be far higher than illustrated in these numbers and the treasurer and I and the employment minister, have not been
shy about pointing to that fact,” Mr Morrison says. The effective rate factors in people working zero hours and those who have dropped out of the workforce. The ABS figures also show 210,800 jobs were added in June. Underemployment fell 1.4 points to 11.7 per cent. Mr Morrison says he expects next month’s figures to show the impact of Melbourne’s lockdown. But he talked up the total number of jobs rising as other states and territories opened up. “I would say to Australians, as difficult as these times are, let’s not look down, let’s look up. Let’s lift our heads.” – AAP

you do with these kids that have the most profound impact. We go walking at Point Cartwright, climbing Mount Ninderry. We have time to engage and a lot of empowerment comes out of that. “It can take a while to build up trust and rapport,” he adds. “But over time that bond builds and the openness builds. Cooper’s mum lives away and his grandmother lives in Caboolture. His dad has never been in the picture. His great-grandmother is so grateful she’s got someone who has a genuine interest in the future of her great-grandson.” Mr Squires is hoping other men across the Sunshine Coast will follow his lead and mentor a disadvantaged child, as there is currently a shortage of male mentors. “I’m sure there are guys out there who would have time to give back and it would be so good for them,” he says. “At Connect Kids + Community, we really believe we can all work as one to break the cycle of disadvantage in the community.” A Connect Community + Kids mentor information session will be held on Tuesday, July 28 in Maroochydore. Consultation has been extended until 31 July 2020! The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) are partnering to deliver the M2M cycleway. A separated cycleway will reduce the need for interaction between motorists and people riding bikes on roads and between active transport users and pedestrians on existing footpaths. The separation will improve safety, comfort and travel time for all users. Initial consultation on the M2M cycleway project was held late last year. T
he field of high-yielding stocks is narrowing as companies choose to cancel or defer dividends in order to preserve capital. By Ord Minnett’s last count, cuts in dividends as companies hunkered down to ride out the COVID-19 pandemic – and the consequent economic damage – amounted to $12.2 billion, while dividend deferrals equated to $998 million. This means shareholders’ wallets will be some $13.2 billion lighter this year, and investors may need to reset their income expectations lower again in the coming months. Latest consensus estimates for dividends over the next 12 months imply an average dividend yield on the S&P/ASX 200 Index of circa 3.4 per cent, well below the 4.5 to five per cent yields investors
have been accustomed to in the past few years. An overview of companies in our coverage universe shows that in fiscal 2020, dividend yields are expected to fall most among the banks and insurers – long-time dividend darlings – especially after guidance from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to reconsider the appropriate level of dividends in light of the disruption brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Retail property trusts are also expected to see a hiatus in dividends. The diminishing dividend yield in the market will, in our view, make incomegenerating stocks even more attractive, due to the lack of alternatives. Not only are there fewer high-yielding companies to choose from, but there is also little income to be earned by sitting in cash given record low interest rates. Right now, the average one-year forward dividend yield on the S&P/ASX 200 Index is sitting 2.6 percentage points above a one-year term deposit rate – a wider spread than normal – and this should be enough to motivate investors to continue holding high-yielding equities rather than cash. Income investors need to be aware that one of the consequences of COVID-19 has been a reprioritisation of capital management strategies by
companies. For income investors, this could be a game-changer, as some investments made for income may no longer fit the criteria over the short to medium term. This includes companies that are unlikely to pay a dividend at the next result, and therefore offer no income yield for shareholders for at least the next six months; or those that could pay a dividend but at a reduced rate, which would leave their dividend yield below the market average. At the other end of the spectrum, however, are companies that should
continue to sustain income for portfolios, given we estimate they can maintain or increase their dividend in fiscal 2020, while generating an above-market dividend yield. This list includes names like Amcor, APA Group, BWP Trust, Charter Hall Long, Dexus, Iress and Telstra. WATCHDOG LOOKS TO BUSINESS CLOSURE FLOOD
The corporate watchdog is preparing to deal with a flood of business failures once government coronavirus supports are taken away towards the end of the year. The JobKeeper wage subsidies are scheduled to end in September, as are a raft of other supports including mortgage payment holidays. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission wants business owners to be prepared for what they need to think about once the help slows or ends. “Obviously as restrictions are removed, businesses start to grapple with what is the actual financial circumstances they find themselves in,â€? commissioner Warren Day told a parliamentary committee hearing. “We would expect ‌ that there will be potentially more closures of businesses through that last quarter of this calendar
year. What we’re doing in the meantime is actually putting out a lot of information to businesses about what does it take to orderly close or wind down a business so that there doesn’t need to be external administrators appointed and a winding up of that business.� Mr Day says business owners should take advice from trusted advisors such as their accountants on the matter. IN PRAISE OF IMPERFECTION
NO TIME TO LOSE
Sami Muirhead’s bald poodle has won her heart and taught her that imperfection is something to be celebrated, rather than criticised.

I
have been thinking a lot about the power of imperfection following the burst of sunshine that bolted into our home at the start of COVID in the form of a tiny silver bald poodle. Archibald (see what we did there) does have clumps of fur, but also has bald stripes and is totally nude on his little ears, four feet and most of his back. He looked more like a bat from the Wuhan market when we first bought him home and whenever we walk him, we are stopped and asked by strangers, “What is wrong with him?”, “Does he have cancer?” and “Oh, what happened to it?”. At first, we were offended because you have never met a dog with a bigger heart or larger sense of self. This dog rules the house with gusto and humour and energy. He is the most divine little creature you ever did meet, and he has enchanted us all with his bold ways. He bounds from child to child and is the first living soul awake before 5am. He curls up in my daughter’s bed at night like a tiny toy and snuggles into her chest with what looks exactly like a big content smile on his tiny pointy face. My daughter has never slept better since this beam of light came into our lives. I have bought hemp oil and kelp powder to try to help his bedraggled coat grow, but a wise poodle expert I know says the fur may just start flourishing when he hits adolescence. Perhaps it will, perhaps it will
not. None of us mind, because Archie has reminded us all that having quirks makes you stand out in a good way. But the thing is, Archie is a real test for me of people’s true level of social acceptance. I can see their heart straight away by the way they react to him. Archie’s baldness is also the reason my daughter begged for us to own him. That girl has always had the kindest of hearts. One of my favourite shops on the Coast is Isabella’s Fine and Antique Jewellery Store in Noosa. The owner, Bec, has kindly encouraged my drooling for over a decade as usually I leave empty-handed but with a full heart and a long bucket list. Bec taught me expensive pearls cost a lot more than a baroque pearl and I have always loved the imperfect ones so much more. Baroque pearls are the exact opposite to traditional pearls, as each one is its own unique size and shape. Glorious nature at its best. What is more beautiful than imperfect beach hair covered in sea salt that dries to a beautiful mess? And you cannot find something so sublimely lovely than a stack of old mismatched books or teacups. It’s the chips and cracks and weathering that give those things such character. Perhaps we all need to keep this in mind when it comes to living creatures as well. So, if you see us at Buddina walking a blackish bundle of energy, please don’t ask us what is wrong with him. Archie is perfect the way he is.

y husband’s name was Herrin. It was a beautiful, unusual name befitting a creative soul. He was a talented musician, a loving husband and a devoted dad to our two boys. On May 20, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was gone in minutes. It was a month after his 47th birthday. He was fit and healthy and his death was shocking and incomprehensible. Losing someone you love suddenly, especially at a young age, hits you with a particular kind of grief. The pain is all-encompassing and overwhelming. It is a nightmare that begins every morning when you wake up. We talked about growing old together and he said I would be even more beautiful as an old woman. He massaged my feet almost every night in front of the TV and pulled the covers back on the bed for me. He made a point of doing little things for me each day to show me how much he loved me. I didn’t. I told him I loved him daily, but those little things, I didn’t really do. Not as often as he did. Sometimes, I would conveniently forget about our twice-weekly scheduled catch-ups, where we were supposed to go into a room without the kids, close the door and just talk to each other. During COVID, when the four of us were stuck at home together, I just wanted to tune out, scroll through my social media feeds and not do the work of connecting with the
man I loved. I took him for granted. I prioritised the kids and work – he often came last. He complained we didn’t talk enough about the important things and he was right. He lost his dad 10 years ago and he knew something I didn’t – that we take our loved ones for granted. He knew how important it was to talk, to really connect, to share as much vulnerability and intimacy as we could. Because it could all end at any moment, for any one of us. I thought he would always be by my side, loving me, caring for me, encouraging me. I thought we had plenty of time. I was wrong. It has been a huge wake-up call.
“Our time here is limited, but we waste it…” Our time here is limited, but we waste it. We waste it on meaningless pursuits, we waste time on petty dramas, we waste time allowing fear to control our lives, we waste our creative talents and spend years of our precious lives in jobs we hate and for what? To buy stuff we don’t need. I was a good wife, but I could have been better. If I had another chance, I would do things differently. He knew I loved him, I just wish I’d shown him how much I truly appreciated him.

Yandina Hotel open again he Sunshine Coast’s oldest hotel is on the road to sustainability as it works to produce its own self-sufficient electricity source. Yandina Hotel owner Rob Kingston

made the most of the COVID lockdown, using the time to renovate the iconic pub’s exterior and interior and install new solar panels. “I upgraded the solar system to include
an extra 20 kilowatts,” Mr Kingston says. “We now have 86 kilowatts.” Mr Kingston, who bought the hotel three years ago, says he has seen a dramatic decrease in his power bills over that time. “My electricity bill used to be $11,000 a month and now I’ve got it down to $2500 per month.” He says even with inclusions such as air-conditioners and automatic doors installed to keep the cool air in over the years, he has been able to keep the power bill down. “I now want to install a 40-kilowatt battery system to power the hotel at night. “The plan is to be off the grid by this time next year.” The hotel also has new lighting, air-conditioning and flooring after staff were kept busy during their 100-day closure. “When ScoMo shut us down in March we thought it was a fantastic and great opportunity to paint and fix what we need to,” Mr Kingston says. He says everyone from the kitchen and floor staff to managers where involved in the renovations. “We spent six weeks on a cherry picker sanding the outside of the building.” Initially thinking they would remain closed until September, Mr Kingston says they did a quick “tidy up” to reopen

as the restrictions were eased. “We still have a bit of painting to finish.” Mr Kingston says in the hotel’s 129-year history, the COVID period was the first time it had stopped “selling a drink”. “The pub was dragged here from the other side of town and was still serving.” The pub itself was built around 1887 by John Sommer. It was called the Australian Hotel and served people travelling between Brisbane and Gympie during the gold rush. Mr Summer was granted a licence in 1889 before discovering he built the hotel in the wrong position on Gympie Road. As a result, in 1891 the Australian Hotel was hitched up to a team of bullocks and moved on skids to Yandina Hotel’s current site in Stevens Street. Mr Kingston says since reopening on July 3, he and his staff have been met with nothing but praise about the renovations from happy patrons. “It’s a beautiful old hotel and the locals appreciate what we’ve done,” he says. “We love our locals and want everyone to come back.” Despite not being able to run at full capacity, Mr Kingston says it is good to be back serving the community. “We are doing our best to keep it the way it was pre-COVID, but I think this might be the new norm.” The hotel is open daily and has a new menu.

Time to tackle youth crime
L
ast week in state parliament, Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie moved a motion to tackle the juvenile crime across Queensland. The Shadow Minister for Police is calling on Labor to immediately implement the LNP’s youth crime plan. “Crime is causing havoc in communities,” Mr Purdie says. “Labor opposed scrapping the failed youth
bail houses that will cost taxpayers $70 million and have an 84 per cent re-offending rate. “The LNP is advocating for more early intervention through a justice reinvestment program to prevent youth crime, but Labor opposed that as well. “Our plan to rehabilitate repeat offenders to break the cycle of offending was opposed.”
During the COVID-19 lockdown, the region experienced a spike in localised youth crime with several break-ins and a vehicle theft reported. In the Coolum district alone, there were 355 offences between April 16 and July 15 this year. Of those offences, 107 were drug related with 52 theft offences and 29 unlawful entries. Breaking and entering into homes is one of the most common crimes in Queensland. Queensland Police says: “Break-ins are often crimes of opportunity, where criminals gain entry through an open or unlocked door or window.” Here are some safety tips for your home: • Make it difficult for an offender to gain entry. For example, install and use key-operated locks on doors and windows, and don’t put keys under doormats or in other obvious places. • Make it difficult for an offender to exit your home with your property. • Make sure alarms are working. • Make it unlikely that an offender will want to steal your property. For example, engrave or microdot all items of value, making them difficult to sell or otherwise pass on.
Mental Health app A free app providing mental health and suicide prevention services on the Sunshine Coast has shown its worth in recent months. USC’s Thompson Institute director Professor Jim Lagopoulos says iHelp has been accessed 946 times since COVID-19 hit in March. iHelp is downloadable for android and iOS phones.
Funding for local clubs Local sport and recreational facilities will benefit from funding under the state government’s $200 million COVID Works for Queensland program. Coolum Tennis Club will receive $350,000 for resurfacing of courts, lighting and fencing; $500,000 is going to the Yandina Cricket upgrade and addition to clubhouse, including femalecompliant change rooms; and there is $100,000 for the Northshore Sports Complex community storage solution.

Rescued turtles in recovery Three turtles are recovering after a number of delicate rescue operations across the region earlier this month. Coolum & North Shore Coast Care were called to help a large green turtle (pictured) at the weir at Twin Waters, before helping two unwell turtles a little further north. “Thanks to all involved in rescuing this large male green turtle from the weir,” a Coast Care statement says. “Thanks also to the folks that reported the two unwell sub-adult green turtles
which were rescued at First Bay Coolum and from Point Arkwright.” “All three have been at transported to Sea Life for care. Great effort by all.”

POLICE BRIEFS Sunshine Coast police are urging residents to check for counterfeit money after reports of fake $50 notes in use last month. Residents are asked to check for security features including a seven-point star and the Australian Coast of Arms on first polymer notes. Colours of security features should also changes when moved in the light on new polymer notes. Other checks people can make include
the feel of the note and making sure it is plastic. Fake notes may feel thicker or thinner, and are easy to tear and scrunch up instead of springing back to shape. If you believe that you have a counterfeit banknote, you should handle the banknote as little as possible and store it in an envelope, note any relevant information of how it came into your possession and report the matter to State or Federal police.

Council recently delivered its $782 million budget and investing in local spaces and places was the focus of the 20/21 Division 8 budget allocation. More than $260,000 will be invested in parks and playgrounds – projects including barbecue, shelter and public seating improvements, bollard replacements and playground equipment. Upgrades are planned for Yaroomba, Twin Waters, Mount Coolum, Maroochydore and Marcoola. The Millwell Road Community Centre will receive a $40,000 upgrade and we will start looking at the space around the centre becoming a district community and cultural venue with $120,000 set aside to plan the future of this community asset. With sport a huge part of our lifestyle, there is a commitment of $45,000 towards a regional football (soccer) facility in Maroochydore. Three is also $50,000 going towards a new transport link to connect Primary School Court to Pikki Street in Maroochydore. I am also pleased to report that an additional $100,000 went into council’s operational canal dredging program that will maintain current service levels for a number of canals cross the region, including Maroochy Waters.

Two lifeguards added
Girls share their big ideas
The Sunshine Coast Council-operated lifeguard service will be increased to two lifeguards at Twin Waters from the September school holidays to improve safety for beachgoers. The announcement is part of the council’s annual $5.5 million investment in lifeguard services across the region.
Business ideas of the future began to take life last week as young female students at St Andrew’s Anglican College were given the opportunity to dream big with the Techgirls workshop. Girls in years six, seven and eight spent the day with The Academy for Enterprising Girls building entrepreneurial and innovation skills, helping them prepare for the 21st century workforce. Year seven student Naomi says she feels inspired and empowered to turn the ideas into reality. “[The workshop] allowed you to bring forward the ideas you’ve pushed back in the past,” Naomi says. “I have a lot of ideas, but I used to not be confident and I used to think my ideas weren’t very good. “But this workshop has made me realise that they aren’t bad, and it has given me the confidence do something and get help and ideas from others.” Naomi brainstormed an app that focused on education around endangered animals and ways people can help. Data from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency shows 17 per cent of businesses have had a woman at the helm over the past six years.

Buderim Group has appointed Australian businessman and consultant Dennis Lin as the new executive director to help lead the sale of the company’s ginger division. Last month the company, which began in 1941, received a takeover offer for $8.3 million for its ginger division. The proposed deal includes the Buderim Ginger brands, all land, plant and ginger processing equipment at Yandina, the Ginger Factory and the 1600-hectare macadamia orchard in Hawaii.

Coolum charity helps outback families Last week Coolum Women’s Shed donated its toy collection to a charity assisting families doing it tough in the outback. Care Outreach began in the early 1990s by Bill Close and wife Melissa, and like many charities, it has had a particularly tough 2020 when carrying out face-to-face volunteer duties. “We have donated our toy collection to him [Bill Close]. It was great to hear that kids in the outback will be getting the lovely toys that we had received,” a statement from Coolum Women’s Shed says. Locals can support the charity’s op shop in Coolum’s industrial estate.

Mad Max movie double coming to Eumundi After sell-out screenings in July, Starry Nights Outdoor Movies will host a Eumundi Drive-in double feature screening of Mad Max 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road at the Eumundi Showgrounds on Saturday, August 1. Trent Harvison from Starry Nights says he has been overwhelmed with requests from movie-lovers keen to see more drive-in screenings. “People are loving the nostalgic cinematic experience and the fact that they can be socially distanced in their cars,” Mr Harvison says.

A
lack of school zone safety is becoming a major concern for parents in one the regions’ fastest growing areas. Caloundra City Private School parent Will Hendey believes the Pelican Waters school zone is becoming more dangerous
and is concerned for his son’s safety. He was left no choice but to express his worries to the state government over the safety of the nearly 300 students. His community-led petition, which has gained support from Caloundra MP Mark McArdle, is campaigning for the
installation of 40-kilometre flashinglight signage and crossings along Pelican Waters Boulevard between Tweddell Drive and Agincourt Street. “My major concern as a parent is one day my child will want to walk to school and letting him do that at this stage, there are no safety facilities to allow him to do that properly,” Mr Hendey says. “Not only does our school deserve the same safety signalling that almost every other school in the area has, we need a solution that will grow with this community. “Policing of the 40kmh zones only deters the speeding cars and large commercial vehicles for a short time. “We’ve brought it up with the school before and the school has also raised the concerns with the local transport department.” Mr McArdle first met Mr Hendey earlier this year to discuss the lack of safety, and last week announced he would sponsor the petition. He says despite safety always being a primary concern, up until now the area did not record enough traffic to warrant a crossing. “The issue of lighting and pedestrian crossing rose a number of years ago, but the problem has been the traffic along the boulevard has not been enough to justify the inclusion of a pedestrian crossing to date,” Mr McArdle says.

“I think the time has now passed for polite negotiations. “While this has always been a busy road, Pelican Waters and indeed most of Caloundra is a rapidly growing community so we need the long-term solution of flashing 40-kilometre lights and pedestrian crossings. “The car volume along the boulevard is increasing daily, Pelican Waters is expanding – more houses, more units – therefore more traffic will hit the roads as time goes by. “We must protect these young pedestrians and cyclists as they learn to negotiate busy intersections.” Data from the 2016 census reveals the population at more than 6200, with 15.9 per cent of residents aged under 14 years. It is predicted by 2036 the population in the Pelican Waters and Golden Beach areas will surpass 16,500 people. Mr McArdle is reminding drivers to be vigilant for children, and all pedestrians, especially when around school zones. “With students back in school … it is also a timely reminder that we as drivers play a critical role in these young people’s safety on the road. Slow down for our children,” he says.

eachgoers at Bokarina will see red and yellow flags in the sand from the September school holidays to help improve safety at the popular swimming area. Sunshine Coast Council has allocated $324,000 towards Bokarina Beach as part of its annual $5.5 million investment in lifeguard services across the region. Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast lifeguard supervisor Rhys Drury says the council’s investment is a win-win
for beachgoers, lifeguards and the community. “We’re really looking forward to setting up at Bokarina Beach these September school holidays to ensure people make responsible choices while enjoying the beach and all its offerings,� Mr Drury says. Tourism, Events and Sport Portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the council’s expanding lifeguard services play an important role in keeping our community safe. “Having dedicated lifeguards gives
residents and holiday-makers peace of mind. It’s an essential part of our healthy, smart and creative lifestyle,� he says. “Our professional lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers provide an exceptional service across our popular Sunshine Coast beaches.� Divisional councillor Peter Cox says the new Bokarina Beach service will use the recently installed lifeguard tower. “Patrols from the new tower will greatly improve lifeguard surveillance along our coastline, while providing an additional flagged bathing area for beachgoers for the coming summer,� Cr Cox says. “It is really important that beachgoers make the effort to find the nearest flagged area when they are wanting to go for a swim.� The tower will be staffed on weekends, public holidays and Queensland school holidays from September to May. A lifeguard outpost service will also commence at the mouth of the Maroochy River during September, Christmas and the Easter school holidays.
Fast facts In the last surf lifesaving season, 340 rescues were made across the Sunshine Coast branch with 36 from Kawana Waters to Dicky Beach.
Mental health app A free app providing mental health and suicide prevention services on the Sunshine Coast has shown its worth in recent months. USC’s Thompson Institute director Professor Jim Lagopoulos says iHelp has been accessed 946 times since COVID-19 hit in March. iHelp is downloadable for android and iOS phones.
Bike trail gets funding Little Mountain’s Sugar Bag Mountain Bike Trails network has been allocated $1.32 million as part of the $5.35 million the region will receive through the state government’s COVID Works for Queensland funding program. Caloundra AFL and Little A’s field lighting ($60,000), Meridan Fields landscaping/bollards and fencing ($25,000) and Skippy Park drainage upgrade ($250,000) will also receive funding.

Storm confirms more Coast games Footy fever is set to continue with Melbourne Storm to play two more ‘home’ games at Sunshine Coast Stadium. The Storm will play round 12 against Newcastle Knights on Sunday, August 2 before facing Canterbury in round 13 on Saturday, August 8. Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray says this is a wonderful opportunity for the region. “This really has a finals footy feel to it and tickets will be in high demand,” he says. “We’re also really looking forward to showcasing our stadium on the national stage.” Storm CEO Dave Donaghy says the
team is settling into Coast life. “The Sunshine Coast has really embraced having our NRL squad in the region.” The stadium’s seating capacity is reduced to 6000 as part of restrictions.

Residents are asked to check for security features including a seven-point star and the Australian Coast of Arms on first polymer notes. Caloundra Regional Gallery will display the works of 20 local artists drawn from the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. “The complete suite of Tony Albert’s 50perCENT series gifted by the artist through the Australian government’s Cultural Gifts Program will be on display,” Sunshine Coast art collection curator Nina Shadforth says.
“These works signify a reframing of identity, re-imagining current pop culture heroes and spokespeople for Indigenous youth. “The exhibition will display three works by the first ever Sunshine Coast Art Prize winner Shane Pickett. “These works are depictions of his Country in Western Australia, the Glass House Mountains and a sunset during a hailstorm.”
The exhibition closes on Sunday, August 2.

deputy mayor nomination from my fellow councillors this term, and I’m honoured to be the first hinterland-based deputy mayor in the history of the Sunshine Coast Council. Division 1, like the Sunshine Coast as a whole, is a diverse community of communities, taking in historic towns including Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Beerwah and Landsborough to the emerging communities of Bells Creek, Baringa and Nirimba. Our business community will pick out changes that will benefit their operation and let go of all the other stuff. Larger enterprises have learnt that workplace locations can be varied without losing efficiency. Decentralised business locations – which will reduce commuting time and give employees the chance to spend more time with their families, while reducing environmental impacts of our excessive car use – could be the new normal. Maybe, just maybe, COVID-19 has cleared the path to a more sustainable business culture.

Currimundi walking group leader moving on Some will say Currimundi’s Tina Scullion has achieved quite a ‘feet’ during her 17 years leading the local Heart Foundation’s walking group, but now it’s time to hang up the shoes for a new adventure travelling Australia. “I joined because I love walking and, being new to the Coast, I felt it would be a good way to meet like-minded people,” the 70-year old says. “I think the physical and social benefits of belonging to a fantastic group like this are beyond anything anyone
expected when it first started. The friendship is immeasurable. the new Maroochydore CBD – is hoped to boost the local arts scene, bringing it in line with the rest of the country. Sunshine Coast Arts, Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Association chairwoman Alison Barry-Jones says the association is currently looking for private benefactors,

and it has had “substantial” amounts already offered. “We are compiling community interest in mapping it down to a first stage component,” Ms Barry Jones says. “Community enthusiasm, boosted by a generous injection of funds from our leading benefactors and organisations, will no doubt be vital in driving the project to fruition.” The association has been pushing for the entertainment and performing arts centre as stage one of the project and says as the “ninth largest” community in Australia, the region has been lagging behind the rest of the country. “There are no excuses now,” she says. “For a region that produces fantastic local talent, students still need to travel to other areas to reach their full potential. “We want to give the city centre a heart and vibrancy.” Ms Barry-Jones says Queensland Ballet’s Li Cunxin has confirmed he will bring three major performances shows each year to the new centre. The entertainment centre will seat 2000 people with the performing arts centre to seat between 1500 and 2000 people. Sunshine Coast Council has lobbied the state and federal governments to provide $100 million towards the project. Six visibility studies have been conducted over the past 25 years for an exhibition centre on the Sunshine Coast.

Funding injection Nambour Aquatic Centre is set to receive more than $1 million for a major upgrade thanks to the state government’s COVID Works for Queensland program. The upgrades will include a new water play area and water slide, with Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson welcoming this and other approved projects across the region. “Thanks to the $5.35 million in COVID-19 Works for Queensland funding, Sunshine Coast Council will be able to deliver much-needed upgrades, expansions and maintenance projects at sports and recreation facilities right across the region,” Mayor Jamieson says. “Importantly, this funding will enable these projects to be delivered sooner, stimulate our local economy and build a stronger community by creating work across a variety of trades and services, a true reflection of our healthy, smart and creative region.” Other projects to benefit from funding are Palmwoods Cricket/AFL change room upgrades ($500,000), Ballinger Park Hockey synthetic surface resurfacing ($450,000), Maroochydore Multi Sports field lighting for AFL oval 4 ($425,000), upgrade to roads and paths, and installation of solar for the main pavilion at Maleny Showgrounds ($200,000) and installation of additional field lights for Buderim Wanderers Football Club ($120,000).

Scientist’s success
A
former Sunshine Coast local who began her career at Nambour General Hospital has now taken her knowledge to the Gold Coast University Hospital as a senior respiratory scientist. Zoe Presley, 34, graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) in 2014 with a biomedical science degree and now performs pulmonary function
tests on inpatients and outpatients from the age of two-and-a-half years to older adults. “Our laboratory offers 20 types of respiratory investigations including measurements of lung capacity, airway narrowing or inflammation, oxygen transfer, respiratory muscle strength and the response of the cardiorespiratory system to exercise,” Ms Presley says.
“I like the diversity of patients – we are a paediatric and adult service – as well as the variety of respiratory diseases we see. “I also enjoy being in a hospital environment where there is a strong commitment to further education, quality assurance, research and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.” The events of COVID-19 have seen a change in Ms Presley’s day-to-day procedure, including the regular wearing of personal protective equipment. It has also affected her testing schedules. “In the future, we expect to test patients who have had significant respiratory complications as a result of COVID-19 to help gauge their progress.” she says. Ms Presley’s passion sparked as a student at Matthew Flinders Anglican College and was brought to life through clinical placements and paid work gained though her experience at USC. “My USC studies gave me a solid base knowledge of human physiology and anatomy, which helped me understand the tests performed in the laboratory and the pathophysiology of the disease processes we see. The placements helped me find out whether the work I was doing was right for me. They led to employment, which was a perfect outcome.”
Mental health app A free app providing mental health and suicide prevention services on the Sunshine Coast has shown its worth in recent months. USC’s Thompson Institute director Professor Jim Lagopoulos says iHelp has been accessed 946 times since COVID-19 hit in March. iHelp is downloadable for android and iOS phones.
Men’s Shed gets funds Maroochy Men’s Shed is $4889 closer to completion thanks to a Grassroots Community Grant from the Hand Heart Pocket charity. The funds will go towards the Men’s Shed’s lighting costs, helping to cover the funding gap. “We are amazed by the community support we have received to date to make this Men’s Shed a reality,” Men’s Shed secretary Otto Alder says.

Nambour Police stalwart retiring Nambour Police is saying farewell to client service officer Denise Musgrove, after a career spanning almost 40 years. Ms Musgrove joined the Nambour team in 2008, after starting with the Queensland Police in July 1972. fter months waiting to invite patrons back into the auditorium, Nambour’s The Lind Theatre has recommenced a limited season. Until July 26 the theatre will stage Love Letters by AR Gurney. Theatre president Glenda Campi says Love Letters is uniquely staged with a change of actors and directors for every performance. “The tale starts when Andrew Makepeace Ladd III accepts an invitation to Melissa Gardner’s birthday party,”
Campi says. “Melissa writes a thank you note, [and] a romantic friendship and correspondence destined to last for almost half a century is born.” Seats are limited to 20 people per show with a Gold Class Pass that includes complimentary wine and cheese. “Our newly sanitised auditorium and foyer will be monitored for social distancing and the volunteers will be sanitising all areas following each show,” Ms Campi says.

Cooper the groodle settles into school
T
he newest addition to teaching staff at Matthew Flinders Anglican College is settling into term three and bringing a smile
to many. Cooper the groodle has been trained to be integrated into school life for the 1300 students. “Wellbeing is an important focus at Flinders and a school dog like Cooper who enjoys a pat and makes a great reading buddy is sure to spark smiles for students and staff,” principal Stuart Meade says. “There is also a great deal of anecdotal and evidence-based research to suggest that dogs have a positive effect in a school environment.” He says dogs trained for school campus environments are often called ‘miracle workers’ because of their calming and joyful effect on students and teachers. Flinders’ college counsellor Dr Alec Hamilton and his family own Cooper and are responsible for his training and care. “So far students in the primary school have been wonderfully gentle with Cooper and respectful of his training protocol, as it’s a hands-off approach while he gets used to the noise and excitement that happens in the school environment.”

Buderim’s next step Buderim Group has appointed Australian businessman and consultant Dennis Lin as the new executive director to help lead the sale of the company’s ginger division. Last month the company, which began in 1941, received a takeover offer for $8.3 million for its ginger division. The proposed deal includes the Buderim Ginger brands, all land, plant and ginger processing equipment at Yandina, the Ginger Factory and the 1600-hectare macadamia orchard in Hawaii.

Maleny Commerce recently launched the Maleny Gift Card program, which is an EFTPOSbased system aimed at keeping money within communities by encouraging people to shop locally and build a strong local economy. We hope this gift card will replace the traditional gift cards you buy at the post office that sees money leaving our community. We hope this program will inject up to $200,000 a year back into the local economy. The card will not be able to be used outside the participating Maleny stores. This means that every time one of these cards is purchased, the money stays local! This has been a significant project for our chamber and has been embraced by the business community with open arms. We are a small business community but have more than 95 businesses signed up to redeem the cards and seven load-up stores.
City Makers program excites kids’ creativity Primary school-aged children are showing their creativity online as part of the City Makers arts and craft program connecting them to nature and the region’s new city space. The initiative, between The Metropolitan and Wildlings Forest School, has been running online since March. “This type of learning really stimulates young minds as it builds on their logical and creative thinking processes,” SunCentral Maroochydore City activation manager Bronwyn Adams says. “We’d really like as to encourage participants to upload photos of their work from home or school via our webform so we can share their exciting creations.”

Saltwater combines culture and cruising In the Year of Indigenous Tourism, the region’s rich Indigenous heritage is being celebrated with the launch of a new Indigenous cruise operator. Saltwater Eco Tours operates from Mooloolaba in a century-old historic timber sailing vessel. Each tour will have an Indigenous storyteller on board to share the stories, traditions and culture of the Kabi Kabi people. Saltwater Eco Tours is the brainchild of Simon Thornalley, a young Indigenous man of Torres Strait Island descent.

Wow, what a run of waves last week! I thought I was clever paddling out in the dark to score some waves to myself only to hear familiar voices telling me I had slept in. I had even bet a Gold Lotto ticket that I would be first. But, it seems someone paddled out at 5am in pitch black under the guidance of the moonlight. Anyway, good news for this weekend as waves will be around with Sunday being the pick. Sadly, the Coast lost a good man this week in Maia Ngamnau. You can rest now mate and the Moffat family will always feel your presence.
