At that age, I was playing with dolls and reading books. Video-streaming platforms and the internet were unimaginable products of the future.

Like many children, our son is fascinated by LEGO and spends every spare second building blocks and researching the popular product.

rime Minister Scott Morrison has announced new visa arrangements to help Hong Kong passport holders stay in Australia.

This has the potential to impact thousands of Hong Kong visa holders.

The new conditions come in response to China’s recent crackdown on protests in Hong Kong. Last Thursday, the Australian government also announced it will suspend its extradition treaty with Hong Kong.

However, while Australia’s changes in visa arrangements are humanitarian in motivation, what is really being offered is a range of temporary economic opportunities. The new measures involve Hong Kong passport holders on student, recent graduate and skilled worker visas.

Those who are here now can stay for another five years, on top of the time they’ve already been in the country. At the end of that five years, the government has announced there will be “pathways to permanent residency”.

Hong Kong passport holders overseas will need to meet visa criteria, including any skilled work or study requirements, but there is no doubt these new provisions will prioritise Hong Kong applicants.

For example, those with temporary graduate visas in the “post-study work stream,” typically stay two to four years.

Similarly, applicants for temporary skilled visa usually stay two to four years.

The government will “enhance efforts” to attract about 1000 businesses based in

Hong Kong, by offering incentives to relocate to Australia to companies with “a strong potential for future growth and employment of Australians”.

The government says there are almost 10,000 Hong Kong visa holders in Australia who will be eligible for these arrangements.

There are a further 2500 outside Australia and 1250 who have applied. As Mr Morrison said: “This will all be accommodated very comfortably within the existing caps that we have on the overall level of visas for permanent residency into Australia.”

There is no doubt the driver for the change in visa arrangements is China’s crackdown in Hong Kong. For some Hong Kong passport holders, the crackdown might mean they meet the definition of a refugee under the Refugee Convention. This could see them fearing persecution “for reasons of political opinion” and open up eligibility for a protection visa under Australia’s Migration Act. Morrison said this pathway remained open to people, but at the same time, no specific, extra provisions have been created for Hong Kong residents. “I should also stress that the refugee and humanitarian stream remains available for those who are seeking to apply through that channel and that is available to people all around the world,” he said.

Before his announcement, China warned against offering special visa arrangements for Hong Kong passport holders, telling Australia to “stop interfering in China’s internal affairs with Hong Kong as a pretext”. So, it is possible the Australian government decided to take a conservative approach to protecting Hong Kong passport holders, so as not to further antagonise the relationship with China.

The announcements are a long way short of the UK’s plans to offer citizenship to almost three million Hong Kong passport

holders. They’re also not as generous as the Hawke government’s permanent protection to 42,000 Chinese students in Australia following the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The prime minister emphasised the economic benefit to Australia, bringing in talented Hong Kong passport holders and businesses, and providing visa extensions to students, graduates and workers. But the principle of humanitarian protection is not based on the potential contribution of those seeking protection. Indeed, humanitarian visas are offered with an expectation that refugees will require considerable assistance to overcome the trauma they have fled and to adjust to a new life in Australia.

While it may be politically pragmatic, the focus on economics rather than humanitarian need confuses the policy. At the conclusion of the visa extensions, the government has stated there will be “pathways to permanent residence”. The criteria will be crucial for visa applicants.

If it is equivalent to existing criteria – satisfying the points test of independent skilled migration, or meeting requirements for sponsorship by an existing employer – Hong Kong passport holders could be feeling anxious about their future.

What if, at the conclusion of their five year visa, they happen to be out of work, or have not yet attained the points required for independent skilled migration? There is a large body of research indicating the uncertainty associated with temporary protection is responsible for poor mental health outcomes for visa holders.

It is also important to note that Australia may find its limited visa offering is not particularly attractive to Hong Kong’s educated and skilled migrants, who will be concerned to find a country offering them genuine asylum.

LIFE LESSONS FROM LOCKDOWN As life in Queensland turns a corner and residents settle into their new COVID-19 norm, Sunshine Coast identity and Nine News weather presenter Nicole Rowles shares four things from her lockdown lifestyle that she’ll keep forever.

T

he coronavirus pandemic has propelled our daily routines into disarray and brought our lives to a screaming halt. While doing our part to keep vulnerable Australians healthy and safe, downtime at home has forced me to make a few lifestyle changes.

Here are four things I’ll be keeping from my lockdown lifestyle as we move into the future.

YOGA – In the past, I was always fairly indifferent to yoga. I liked it and took the occasional class, but when COVID-19 hit, I realised I couldn’t live without it! I was one of many who turned to free online tutorials to relieve stress and order my thoughts in a time of chaos, and it has hugely improved my life. I feel healthier, calmer and stronger, in every sense of the word. Yoga is part of my daily routine now, and I think it will be for a long time to come.

UPSKILL – We all used our time in isolation in different ways. Some of us took it really easy, and others were highly

motivated. For me, it depended on the day, however, when I was feeling energised, I started learning AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language). It was a great way to break up the day, remain stimulated and feel like I was continuing to progress and upskill.

I’ve become very passionate about learning the language, and as a Nine News Sunshine Coast weather presenter, I hope one day I’m proficient enough to connect on a deeper level with those who are hearing-impaired or profoundly deaf. If you started to learn a new skill in isolation, keep it up. And if you didn’t, that’s okay too – maybe the time you’ve taken to recuperate and regain your mental and physical strength will empower you to try something new or revisit old passions.

CULINARY GENIUS – Anyone who knows me knows that I am the exact opposite of a star chef, but during my time in isolation, I decided to reinvent myself as a culinary master. I have a long way to go before I can actually label myself as such, but I’ve realised that with the correct guidance, many recipes I perceived as

time-consuming and complicated can actually be simple. I tapped into a number of excellent online resources and added some great new dishes to my repertoire.

SLOW DOWN – I was so busy before COVID-19 hit, that when quarantine brought my life to a screeching halt, it was a huge shock to the system. However, I soon realised how much I needed time. I realise that not everyone out there (parents and essential workers especially) had the freedom to just relax during quarantine, but I think something many of us shared was the realisation that we had been feeling pressured to make the most of our free time. Every weekend, we had to make plans, had to go, go, go, or we’d feel like we were wasting our days.

We had to stay home to protect others.

I intend to do more of that now.

I’ll be glad to see coronavirus leave our lives, but everything in life can be a learning experience. I encourage you to reflect. What skills, mantras or daily routines will you take with you as we all thankfully say goodbye to life in isolation?

Our children just can’t get enough of YouTube and other online video-sharing sites, but how much is too much, and what problems is all this screen time causing our kids, now and in the future?

rom its endless music videos and makeup tutorials to motivational speaking, funny fails and just about everything in between, YouTube has fast become the largest video-sharing platform since its launch in 2005.

With content easier to access than ever before and more children spending time on technology and smart devices, your kid’s relationship with YouTube is something to monitor.

A 2020 Oberlo report states YouTube has more than two billion users worldwide, with a staggering one billion hours of content watched daily and 500 hours of content uploaded every minute.

So how much of this content are our children actually absorbing and how much screen time is too much?

The Qustodio 2020 annual report on children’s digital habits reveals YouTube, despite its age restriction of 13-plus, is the number one online video platform for children aged four to 15.

On average kids are spending 85 minutes a day on YouTube, double the number they were four years ago.

Thanks to COVID-19 lockdowns, more and more people have been forced onto screens. But it’s not just YouTube stealing the attention of our children.

During March and April, video app TikTok rose to fame, and children now spend almost as long on the social media platform as they do on YouTube.

A 2016 survey commissioned by the Australian Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner gives insight into just how much time Australian children spend in front of screens. The survey asked 2278

day for children aged two to five and less than two hours for children aged five to 17.

University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer in psychology, Dr Rachael Sharman says YouTube is “not that different to sitting down and watching television”.

“With YouTube there are some issues with censorship and moderation, and you don’t want them sitting there watching for hours on end.”

Australian children aged between eight and 17 about their relationship with technology, revealing 73 per cent watch videos online.

During the same year, Family Zone Cyber Safety found 65 per cent of Australian children under eight were watching YouTube.

The Australian Parents Council recommends zero screen time for children under two years old, less than one hour per

Dr Sharman says researchers link excess screen time with issues to children’s health. “A lot of research is showing too much time on screens impacts myopia or short-sightedness in children.

“If you’re focussing on something close up then you are not learning to look into the distance. It’s like eye exercises. Kids are spending less time ‘looking for wildebeest’ than we did growing up.”

As well as back and neck issues commonly associated with screen time, one of the biggest concerns is obesity.

In Australia, children are recommended to have one hour of physical activity daily.

“Sedentary activity is replacing running around all day until dinner time,” Dr Sharman says. “Now we are seeing children sitting for long periods of time, or just not moving at all. Some researchers refer to sitting as the new smoking.”

And as if putting the children to bed wasn’t hard enough already, screen time is increasing the challenge. Blue light emitted from screens has been proven by many researchers to prevent sleep, leaving some children without the recommended eight to 12 hours of sleep each night.

“It’s really important to give the brain time to rest and relax,” Dr Sharman says.

An article by Harvard Medical School, Screen Time and the Brain, looks at the impact too much screen time can have on childhood development. It too touched on the importance of uninterrupted sleep, particularly REM sleep, essential for processing and storing information learnt during the day into memory.

There are also concerns among professionals too much time spent watching content can shape unwanted behaviours and self-control. “With shorter myweeklypreview.com.au

A sense of mimicking video influencers and body image also plays a huge role, particularly for teenagers.

A survey of 2360 parents by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner in 2016 found 60 per cent of Australians with children aged between eight and 17 believed their child was exposed to risks online. Sixty per cent were concerned their children were accessing inappropriate content and 42 per cent said they were worried their child was excessively online.

While there a plenty of risks, technology is now a vital part of education, particularly during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

“I use it in lectures, there is some great stuff on YouTube,” Dr Sharman says. “It’s a great way to consolidate learning, especially with access to visuals and diagrams.”

Dr Sharman says there are “plus sides” to YouTube as it can offer a different dimension to learning. She refers to maths teachers like Eddie Woo, from Sydney, who have become YouTube famous for their skills in explaining tricky maths problems.

What about those kids who turn YouTube into a career?

According to a Harris Poll/LEGO survey conducted in the US, UK and China, children aged between eight and 12 are three times more likely to aspire to be a YouTuber than an astronaut.

There are thousands of channels where child stars upload content, from dance videos and backyard science experiments, to unboxing new toys.

Australian brothers Calvin, eight, and Kaison, four, have become YouTube sensations with their channel CKN Toys, and now star in a Nick Jr television series, Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power.

Since it first launched in 2015, their YouTube channel has grown to 15.5 million subscribers and has more than 14.6 billion page views. The page is run by the boys’ parents and has an estimated net worth of up to $30 million, with an estimated $660,000 made in the last three months

Sunshine Coast mother of two Belinda Bollen finds monitoring the YouTube use of her seven- and three-year-old sons to be a challenge. “Even with censorship and restrictions [they are] served stuff that is not appropriate.”

She says her seven-year-old is at the age where he is interested in various YouTube channels and TikTok stars.

“My seven-year-old loves all the challenge stuff, sometimes content with inappropriate age censorship like TikTok. “Some of the YouTube channellers that are suitable for him, like Miller Wilson who started out at Eumundi school and rose to fame, are not on YouTube Kids but on mainstream YouTube. I also find that with all these 15-second grabs it promotes a short attention span rather than listening to a whole song or show.”

As a result, Ms Bollen has removed mainstream YouTube and TikTok from their home devices, with YouTube Kids the only video app they have access to.

With three teenagers in the house Carlie Brial says YouTube is a big part of their lives.

She has two daughters aged 19 and 16 and

a son, George, who recently turned 13. Ms Brial says she often comes home to the sound of voices coming from her kids’ phones and conversations about what just happened in “this YouTuber’s life”.

“All three of them use it, but for different reasons and categories,” she says, adding the girls mostly watch reality stars and makeup and fashion videos. George is a deep thinker with an inquisitive mind and is more interested in inventions and new concepts, and the occasional “crazy” video.

“I’m quite sure if we were to ask some of his mates’ parents they would say something different about what they see.”

Ms Brial’s son’s interest in YouTube sparked two years ago and many of his friends now have their own accounts where they upload challenge or music videos.

While her children do not upload content, Ms Brial admits they are on YouTube far more than she would like. She says she has set some time limits, but the crux of it comes down to building trust and respecting boundaries. “I try to be flexible and make sure I am that mum who keeps a bit of an eye on what they are doing.

“During school time George might spend an hour or so daily between the Xbox

and YouTube, but that’s more in school holidays.

“I… trust that they’re not going to watch the wrong thing. I also watch their behaviour very closely. If I notice a difference, I will then look into what might be happening in their social media world.

We also often ask what they’re watching and have lots of open discussions.”

So as parents what can you do to make sure your kids aren’t being lost to YouTube?

One way is to give them access to YouTube Kids. The app holds a library of ageappropriate material and parents can decide what content the child has access to, set screen timers, block videos and receive information on their viewing history.

Dr Sharman says the aim is for a balanced lifestyle. “Not all screen time is bad and it’s about how they are using it and what else they are doing.”

“As parents you need to look at if they are playing sport, spending time outside or catching up with friends.”

Families can implement a screen time plan to help understand when to use, and not to use, their devices.

In a bid to slow youth crime in its tracks, Mr Bleijie says the LNP will introduce a comprehensive youth crime plan incorporating tough new laws and an overhaul to the justice system, if the party wins the state election on October 31.

As part of the youth crime plan, youth offenders on bail will be monitored 24/7, there will be mandatory detention for third convictions, a Community Payback Farm program will be established to rehabilitate repeat offenders, youth bail houses will be scrapped, and justice reinvestment will be trialed to increase early intervention.

“I know the people of the Sunshine Coast want a safe community and a strong economy that provides good, secure jobs,” Mr Bleijie says.

s the Sunshine Coast amid a youth crime crisis? The latest statistics from Queensland Police confirm our youth are responsible for 34 per cent of crimes recorded on the Sunshine Coast.

In 2019, youth made up for 27 per cent of crime committed on the Coast. The increase from last year’s data has sparked concern, considering the figures for 2020 have coincided with COVID-19, suggesting pandemic restrictions have not deterred youth from offending.

MORE INCOME SUPPORT ON THE WAY AFTER JOBKEEPER A further stage of income support will be delivered to ensure certainty for Australian families and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Scott Morrison says. At present 3.3 million workers are getting the $1500 a fortnight JobKeeper wage subsidy, with 896,000 businesses registered. In Queensland, 171,000 businesses are signed up to the program. It is due to wrap up in September. Mr Morrison says the details of the government’s decisions will be outlined on July 23 in an economic statement and there will be no change to that timetable. Labor launched a website last Friday which allows people to look up what the cancellation of JobKeeper would mean for their community, arguing the government should bring forward its decision on the subsidy. Labor wants the program to be better targeted so people can’t earn more than their normal wage and says the payment should also taper off over time, rather than come to a dead stop. Mr Morrison says he has made it “very clear that there would be a further stage of income support.”

SUNSHINE COAST TO HOST UPCOMING NRL GAMES

ooty fans will be treated to a winter storm like no other tonight, July 17, as the NRL’s Melbourne Storm take to Sunshine Coast Stadium against the Gold Coast Titans.

The round 10 match is the first of three Storm-allocated home games to be played on the Coast after the team relocated from its Victorian base.

The team will also face up against Newcastle Knights on Sunday, August 2 and against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday, August 8.

A COVID Safe plan has been approved by the Queensland Government and includes authority for a seating capacity of 6000 at the stadium.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the Storm’s decision to to host these games at the venue is a win-win for the NRL and the region. “We have a track record of selling out the stadium for top-level rugby league and have no doubt this will be repeated for these Melbourne Storm games, even though it will be a reduced number due to COVID-19 guidelines,� Cr Jamieson says.

LIFE ABOARD THE SURGERY SHIP

K

aren Binns has dedicated more than 40 years of her life to a career in nursing, which has seen her practise in a variety of countries and working in a number of different fields.

But the Buderim resident says nothing compares to her time volunteering with Mercy Ships.

As the work of the global organisation, which has its headquarters here on the Sunshine Coast, is recognised on the small screen with the release of the never-beforeseen director’s cut of The Surgery Ship on 7TWO, Ms Binns reflects on her time aboard the majestic vessel Africa Mercy.

It was no accident Ms Binns became a nurse. From a young age, she saw herself as a ‘people person’ and a stint as a nursing assistant opened her eyes to the possibilities of a career in nursing. From the outset, she was hooked.

Ms Binns qualified in the UK in 1979, after hospital-based training, and later, in Australia, gained post-graduate qualifications. She has worked in diverse areas of nursing throughout her long career, including paediatrics, medical,

surgical and palliative care, and in settings as varied as hospitals, the community and a prison. Ms Binns lived in Victoria before discovering the Sunshine Coast and relocated here in 1998 where she is now in the peri-operative field as a recovery and anaesthetics nurse.

Her vast experience, and willingness to give back once her children left home and established families of their own, made Ms Binns the perfect candidate for Mercy Ships.

“I first heard of Mercy Ships through attending a fundraising event in Mooloolaba over a decade ago. I did not know of the charity before then, nor that its Australian office was in Bulcock Street, Caloundra. But it marked the beginning of a journey for me that has been life changing,” she says.

“Mercy Ships ticked lots of boxes for me – my love of travel, challenge and adventure; an opportunity to give back to those less fortunate; the security provided by the ship, to name a few.”

Ms Binns was accepted by Mercy Ships in 2011, and, with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, travelled to Sierra Leone,

Nurse Karen Binns has served aboard Mercy Ships in a range of countries for five weeks. She has since served in every subsequent field service, which has taken her to Guinea, the Congo, Madagascar, Benin, Cameroon and Senegal. She has spent around 86 weeks on board the ship and plans to clock up many more hours as soon as COVID-19 restrictions ease and allow the crew to resume treatments.

“Living on board the ship is a challenge – sharing small cabins with strangers, not a lot of privacy or personal space, communal

dining at set times, constant background noise, and many quirks of ship life – mostly first world problems that pale into insignificance when compared with the lives of many our patients,” she says.

“This is more than balanced out by making life-long friends from every corner of the world, bonded over shared experiences – once a Mercy Shipper, always a Mercy Shipper. They are the only people who can truly understand what

NEWS the experience is like. There is lots of camaraderie, making your own entertainment; it is always an adventure to venture from the ship, and, of course, there is always lots of hard work.

“Working on board was a revelation, with teamwork excelling through respect, caring, and collaboration; everyone on the same page, to help those in need. I feel blessed to have experienced this and know that it is possible.”

Wifi on board the Africa Mercy meant Ms Binns could easily stay in touch with her husband Phil and keep on top of all of the activities her grandchildren were up to while she was abroad.

Ms Binns, who is also the assistant chair on the board of Mercy Ships Australia, says rather than despair at the level of need she sees whenever they dock in a new location, she is encouraged by being able to work with patients.

“All patients are memorable in their own way. It is confronting to see the conditions on which we operate, not because they are peculiar to those areas of Africa, but that they have not been treated – huge facial tumours, burns contractures, women incontinent through birth injuries, children with limb deformities, the list goes on,” she says.

“Some of the patients I have cared for are burned into my memory. I especially

remember those who had suffered for years – the pain and discomfort, the shame and neglect, the lack of hope, and, of course, the children. It is very humbling to be part of their treatment and healing, and see the hope that it is indeed possible.”

She says it is also heartening to know of the investment Mercy Ships is making in the future of health-care delivery in these countries – through training and mentoring of local surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and

Since its first voyage in 1978, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 70 countries providing services valued at more than $1.3 billion, with more than 2.7 million direct beneficiaries. Each year, more than 1200 volunteers from more

than 40 nations serve with Mercy Ships.

“I think it would be impossible to serve with Mercy Ships and not come back changed in some way,” Ms Binns says. “We have so much to be grateful for in our everyday lives, our health care, education, our standard of living, so much that we can take for granted, all because of the stroke of luck that had us born in a ‘lucky country’. I believe we are global citizens, and that we can all ‘pay back’, in small and local ways, or looking further afield.

“I have gained much more than I have given through volunteering. I have not become a saint, I am just a regular person, and I strive now to count my blessings.”

Ms Binns says she will be watching The Surgery Ship.

“It always feels so personal to me [to see the volunteers in action] as I recognise crew and patients, knowing that I have had a ‘front row seat’ in the operating theatres in action,” she says.

“It never fails to bring me to tears.

“I would encourage everyone to visit the Mercy Ships website, to consider supporting this very worthy charity, and, of course, to have what could be the adventure of a lifetime by volunteering in one of the many and varied roles available.

“It could change your life, and the lives of those in such need. It changed mine.”

VIRUS VACCINE CANDIDATE STARTS HUMAN TESTS A coronavirus vaccine developed by University of Queensland scientists could be ready for use at the start of next year, with clinical trials beginning on Monday.

The promising treatment is being developed and manufactured simultaneously, in what is an Australian first.

“Whilst these studies are underway, we will still be working in the background along with our partners CSL to advance the manufacturing, so we have this vaccine at scale when it’s needed,” team leader Professor Paul Young says.

“To see us at this stage of clinical testing a mere five months after we selected our lead vaccine candidate to what was essentially a newly emerging global infectious disease threat is remarkable.”

More than 4000 Queenslanders put their hands up to participate in the trial which researchers hope will be a breakthrough in combating the virus. The 120 volunteers chosen will receive a dosage of the vaccine twice at four-week intervals, and be monitored to determine its safety and the immune response triggered.

Prof Young hopes the vaccine is ready for emergency use early next year, with distribution slated for mid to late 2021. -AAP

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) are partnering to deliver the M2M cycleway.

A separated cycleway will reduce the need for interaction between motorists and people riding bikes on roads and between active transport users and pedestrians on existing footpaths. The separation will improve safety, comfort and travel time for all users.

Initial consultation on the M2M cycleway project was held late last year. The feedback received has been used to inform the planning and develop a preferred option for Stage 6.

TMR is committed to genuine consultation and encourages all stakeholders and community members to have their say on the project. The preferred option will be open for feedback from Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020. TMR will consider the feedback received and use it to inform the final design.

VIRUS OUTBREAK FORCES ECONOMIC STOP-START

FAREWELL PAPA BEAR Sami Muirhead says losing a parent is a club nobody wants to belong to, especially when the loss is unexpected.

M

ost of us think our dad is extraordinary. It took my father’s death for me to realise mine really was something special. ‘Lex’ or ‘Papa Bear’ did not follow traditions and was not your regular dad. He was larger than life and the centre of the party. Dad’s favourite saying was ‘bravo!’. He was the person I turned to for advice on the big issues in life.

Dad lived a remarkable life as he scuba-dived shipwrecks at night, flew planes looking dashing in his army uniform, rattled across deserts on a motorbike and skydived into deep blue oceans. He sure did it his way, to quote Frank Sinatra.

My parents divorced when I was young and I lived with my mum, so Lex was somewhat of an enigma who always had exotic tales of travel and adventure. For three decades he sent me the most magical letters adorned with stamps and sketches and tales of wonder.

My first memory is of him engraving our saucepans with the word ‘Bravo!’ and a sketch of a wolf. To this day, I do not know why he did this, but my mum claims it was to stop thieves swiping our saucepans.

I loved Dad’s tales of adventure and at his funeral everyone seemed to have a wild story about this larrikin. My favourite memories are from last Christmas, where my kids and my Dad threw buckets of water over each other in his backyard and

used the wheelie bin to slam dunk basketballs. Lex was an ‘old boy’ and a Mooloolaba Surf Club legend, so it was fitting for his final farewell a surf boat fought the break to head out to sea and the crew raised their oars for one minute to pay their respect for the last time to this old sea dog. The club even sounded the shark bell as a final salute. Dad would have loved every part of it, but I am not too sure the tourists loved it!

And to those who have reached out and wrapped our family in kindness, I say

“He was the person I turned to for advice on the big issues in life” thank you. Losing a parent is a club no one ever wants to join. It is a feeling of loss, pain and disorientation – perhaps only those who have lost their mum or dad can understand. He died unexpectedly and I feel a bit lost without him. I thought he would be traversing the country and telling his tall tales for many more decades. I have one last letter sitting unopened tucked away in my kitchen draw. I will need a big dose of courage and a big glass of red wine to open that final piece of art and to read his last words. Bravo, Dad, Bravo!

ne of the more unbelievable aspects of how Scott Morrison talks about the coronavirus response has been his insistence there would be no stop-start approach to the reopening.

Just 10 days ago the Prime Minister told reporters on the Eden-Monaro election campaign trail Australia couldn’t let the virus hold it back.

That same day, residents across more than 30 suburbs of Melbourne were put back into lockdown.

Last week, New South Wales and Queensland shut borders to Victorians.

And the entire greater Melbourne region returned to the toughest level of business closures and stay-at-home orders.

Many businesses managed to reopen their doors only for a week or two before being forced shut again – the very stop-start the Prime Minister insisted we could avoid.

The way this insidious virus spreads so quickly and easily means the idea outbreaks could be contained simply by pausing planned measures to restart the economy instead of clamping down and stopping people gathering again was nonsense.

“This is a virus that doesn’t, you know, communicate itself in terms of its intentions or how it’s going to behave,” Morrison said last Wednesday.

“We don’t have control over the virus, as such, but we do have control over how we respond.”

The challenge with this potential second wave of infections will be to swiftly learn what worked and what didn’t the first time and act without giving in to the

temptation for political recrimination.

Imagine if the outbreak had occurred in Queensland, which has a state election in October? Federal coalition politicians – especially Peter Dutton – already spare few opportunities to take potshots at Labor premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

But there are questions about the new outbreak that need answers. How did the hotel quarantine arrangements in Victoria go so wrong? Why were private security contractors used there instead of police and the defence force as in other states?

Why were nearly a third of people allowed to refuse coronavirus tests?

While national cabinet jointly decided to require quarantine for travellers from overseas, Australia is a nation of states and arrangements were managed individually by each jurisdiction.

People returning from overseas who waited out their quarantine periods in Sydney or Perth tell of being completely confined to their hotel room, having to pace around the beds for exercise and rely on friends for deliveries of care packages.

Yet there are reports that infections spread from quarantined people in Melbourne to security guards – then out to their families, friends and communities – via shared cigarette lighters and alleged intimate contact.

Freelance reporter Megan Clement wrote on Twitter that even amid all the focus on infection spikes and quarantine arrangements, guards and hotel staff where she was in quarantine still seemed to have little training in infection control.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced a judicial inquiry into quarantine arrangements.

“Everyone is so friendly and you soon lose your shyness and inhibitions when the music and the rhythm carry you away and you are concentrating on your steps,” Dee says. “One of the good things about being old, (she is in her mid-60s) is that you don’t care so much what people think of you anymore.”

Latin dancing is fun but if you find it too hard on the knees and hips, then you can revisit the past in those older forms of dancing that loosely fall under the banner of ‘folk’ or ‘country’ and are delightful to perform without being too strenuous.

What’s more, you don’t necessarily need to take along a partner because you are dancing as part of a group.

Both Aussie bush dancing and American square dancing remain popular in Australia, but it’s the resurgence of early English country and the more refined and musically complex society (think Jane Austen) dances, as well as colonial-era styles that are drawing both participants and onlookers today.

Sheree Greenhill has taught this type of dancing for many years, as well as the popular American Contra style with its mixed Scots-Irish-English heritage.

Her Dance Kaleidoscope group has

been going for about 20 years. There is an invitation-only Friday group which has been dancing together for many years and a larger Sunday group where newcomers are welcome.

Dance Kaleidoscope has performed at social functions, schools, weddings, festivals and public occasions such as the 150th anniversary of the opening of Queensland’s Parliament. They learn, practice and perform dances from 1650 to 1820, wearing the appropriate costumes and taking part in the History Alive historical camp-outs where trying to speak and behave ‘in period’ is all part of the fun.

It is this social interaction which makes English period dancing so relevant to older people, as well as the grace, poise and dignity inherent in such dancing.

The benefits in terms of circulation, co-ordination and helping to prevent the development of osteoporosis are obvious but Sheree adds the fact that endorphins released in the brain during dancing act as natural painkillers.

And because this is an essentially co-operative activity with several (usually at least eight) dancers taking part, the social bonds become very strong.

Hearing loss generally creeps up on you.

Rarely do you wake up with a hearing loss (if you do that requires urgent attention, but is a subject for a different article). These days, we see a lot of activity in the hearing aid space, with shops popping up in retail environments, it can be confusing and some places will take advantage of that confusion. Hearing loss is a medical situation, not a retail one.

One of the critical aspects of getting good results is the relationship you build with the clinician who assesses your hearing and makes recommendations based upon need and not the cost factor.

Someone who understands your needs and listens to you is essential. You have to feel comfortable.

The six simple rules for getting better hearing: 1. Find a local, independent, Australianowned clinic.

2. Always get a second opinion, do not be bullied into making a hasty decision. It is your hearing and your choice.

3. Always get a trial period on a fitting, 30 days is best. The devices have to work in your world, not the shop.

4. Take your spouse or family member to the appointment. Take your time.

5. More expensive doesn’t mean better, if it sounds overly expensive, it probably is.

6. As a pensioner, always ask about the free option. If they are not offered, think twice.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted superficial veins that are no longer efficient at returning blood to your heart.

They are common in our society and may be unsightly. They can also cause ache and swelling and in some cases lead to skin ulcers, bleeding or blood clots.

Cancer treatment in the era of COVID-19 Cancer diagnosis and treatment is stressful for patients under normal circumstances.

However, the current era of COVID-19 brings new sets of challenges to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our patients.

Because of their immunosuppressed state, cancer patients are more susceptible to infections. Older patients are also more vulnerable, especially those with underlying health conditions. There are changes on how patients are managed to minimise risk exposure, from prioritising treatments, increased use of telehealth consultations, reduced hospital visits and changes in hospital protocols. Face-to-face consultations in the cancer care setting is preferred in some cases for proper assessment and review of the individual.

We are yet to see the other potential negative impact of COVID-19 on cancer care, of postponing scheduled procedures, cancer screening and delayed presentation of symptoms due to the current restrictions and self-isolation. Patients should maintain appointments and screening processes where possible or to reschedule with minimal delay, to ensure early cancer diagnosis and optimal treatment outcomes.

Caring from afar A family caregiver’s helping hand can only reach so far. A family caregiver living closer to a loved one can respond to a senior’s needs more quickly and easily.

Trying to care from afar, either for routine responsibilities or emergency situations, becomes more difficult.

Start by just saying ‘Hello’. Text messages are short sentences that can work well to encourage dialogue.

4. Video chat. By using a program such as Skype or FaceTime, long-distance family caregivers and loved ones can chat.

Being able to physically see loved ones means long-distance family caregivers can better assess how they are feeling and managing.

GST NEEDS TO BE PART OF STAMP DUTY REMOVAL SOLUTION

T

he Property Council has welcomed this month’s release of the Thodey Report, which provides a perspective on options to overhaul federal-state financial relations and tax reform, but limits the prospect of meaningful reform by ruling out an enhanced GST as the mechanism to remove stamp duty and therefore boost the economy.

Ken Morrison, chief executive of the Property Council of Australia, says “Tax reform and how we fund the federation have always been important issues, but the impact of COVID-19 and the need for economic recovery brings a heightened sense of urgency to this conversation.

“The report correctly singles out stamp duty on property transactions as a tax that is highly distortionary, harms the economy, worsens housing affordability and provides a roller coaster revenue stream for governments.

“Clearly the abolition of stamp duty – universally acknowledged as the most harmful tax within Australia – must be front and centre of any meaningful tax reform effort.

“However, the proposed remedy of replacing stamp duty with a broad-based land tax is potentially problematic and needs much more careful consideration.

“There is a compelling case for the GST to do much more of the heavy lifting in providing state and territory governments with the revenue they require, as well as enable the abolition of bad taxes such as stamp duty.

“This was one of the original intentions of the GST when it was introduced 20 years ago, with all state and territory governments promising to abolish commercial stamp duties in exchange for this revenue. Sadly, only South Australia has done so.

“The Henry Tax Review also recommended using an expanded or higher GST as one of two options to

facilitate the abolition of all stamp duty, a fact that is not acknowledged in the report.

“The Thodey Report explores many issues associated with its preferred model of replacing stamp duty with a larger and broader land tax, but it ignores the key question of how high a new land tax would need to be to offset lost stamp duty revenues.

“This is the key challenge with this reform proposal and we need only look to the ACT’s experience to see why.

“After eight years of notionally working to abolish stamp duty, the ACT Government has only reduced stamp duty revenues by one per cent – hardly a successful model for abolishing this tax.

“Over the same period, the overall property tax revenues (stamp duty, land tax and general rates) have increased by 71 per cent. There is no doubt that we need a reform pathway to retire stamp duty. A stronger GST should be kept on the table as a mechanism to deliver this outcome.

“The Thodey Report is a good conversation starter, but risks missing the opportunity for real reform by dismissing this option.”

INTERSTATE DEVELOPERS EYEING OFF COAST PROPERTY

olliers International agents Baydn Dodds and Nick Dowling have recently transacted three residential development sites in Caloundra, achieving values reflective of a market showing no signs of the price reductions being voiced by economists and reported in the media.

They transacted 12 Anning Street in late 2019, with the Brisbane-based buyer working to amend the development approval to allow a settlement in March 2020. The site had an approval for 10 units plus ground floor commercial, however the approval needed some amendments to ensure a viable development.

On the back of this sale, they successfully sold 127 Esplanade Golden Beach via a virtual auction conducted in April during the COVID-19 lockdown, and achieved a result under the hammer well in excess of the reserve. Both of these sites benefitted from easy access to the Pumicestone Passage, as well as great views of the water.

Another site transacting in April was 65 Esplanade, a site they had been marketing for over a year with the benefit of an approval for four large owner-occupier style units, across from the Passage and within walking distance of the Golden Beach shops. A mix of local and Brisbane-based developers purchased the

sites, however there was also interest from interstate developers. There has been an uptick in enquiry from Sydney and Melbourne-based residential developers, indicating they are beginning to look at other markets outside of their regular market bases.

Overall, developer sentiment has remained strong despite the COVID-19 related market concerns, with many developers forecasting an increase in demand

for units, townhouses and land in 2021 as confidence continues to improve. There is also general consensus in the developer community that there will be some form of supply and demand based stimulus from state and federal governments to help the construction sector

Okay, Donkey Kong is in the house and waves should be aplenty! Conditions at this stage seem not too shabby.

That said, wave direction will be everything so let’s pray this swell wraps in to the Coast and does not pass us by.

Noosa will be the spot for sure, as will Alexandra Headland.

Crowds have been very light lately so definitely give it a crack.

Sunshine Beach could be all time if the wind does not get up as it will catch more of this swell.
