Personally, these are the key traits that I have focused and improved upon in the wake of the unusual year so far that has been 2020.

Six months ago, no one could have predicted the path that the first six months of this year would have taken.

It hasn’t been an easy one, that’s for sure.

That said, I’m a firm believer that there are always lessons to be learned from difficulty, and this is the sentiment of this week’s feature story.

aving a baby wasn’t something 21-year-old Rachell Kleiner was thinking about as she finished

university.

But when a lump in her throat turned out to be much more than tonsillitis the

thought of children, as well as her future, came into sharp relief.

Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Ms Kleiner’s oncologist said they couldn’t afford to wait for weeks of hormone therapy to push production of viable eggs.

Even with a loving partner and family, the treatments are a load which is carried alone, Ms Kleiner says. “No one will truly understand until they’ve been through it themselves.”

The first IVF-conceived Australian, Candice Reed, celebrated her 40th birthday this month.

It’s a personal milestone which also marks two score years of “outrageous” progress in fertility research, according to Professor William Ledger.

The head of obstetrics and gynaecology at Sydney’s The Royal Hospital for Women says he and his colleagues had no idea fertility treatments would become such an integral part of mainstream medicine.

“It’s gone from a totally

experimental, hit and miss affair to a really efficient, patient-friendly process,” Prof Ledger says.

The Oxford graduate thinks “clever tech” and other advancements are impressive, but the best part of his job is when former patients drop by for a visit. “When they come back in with a young child, a new human life, and the person is now a mum or a dad, knowing we helped do that [is] fantastic,” he says.

In November, The Royal opened a new laboratory for its Women’s Fertility and Research Centre (FRC), becoming the only public hospital in Australia to have a dedicated fertility service for people with cancer.

It meant Prof Ledger’s team was able to put back the ovarian tissue removed from Ms Kleiner 14 years ago.

The procedure has been done only twice in New South Wales, once successfully.

Ms Kleiner, who had hers done in December, is still waiting on the results.

There is a very small risk the tissue could be malignant, she says. But she is happy to be a guinea pig if it offers a chance to become a parent.

“We’re told all the time woman’s fertility takes a dive after 35. It’s basically putting thousands of my 21-year-old eggs inside a 35-year-old me,” she adds.

There are currently 200 samples from young women and children, waiting in freezers until needed.

Prof Ledger says sometimes it won’t work but sometimes it can work for several years. It offers women more than a chance at fertility, he adds.

“Young women pushed into menopause at 25, sometimes they might get their ovarian function back and have their menstrual cycle for a few years.

Global pandemic

offers new perspective Sunshine Coast meditation teacher Erin Ashley

COVID-19 has bulldozed into our lives, prompting a fear-provoking reality many of us have never considered: life as we know it can suddenly be stripped away. WORDS: Layne Whitburn.

W

hat is the meaning of life?

While COVID-19 remains active, many people have embraced restrictions by slowing down, spending more time with family, and reassessing what’s important in life.

Sunshine Coast meditation teacher Erin Ashley says, “COVID-19 has interrupted a lot of our typical routines and patterns. If we’re open to it, we’ve been afforded an opportunity to examine our ways.”

Ms Ashley, who hosts mindful yoga classes, programs and retreats, says the meaning of life is, “to keep loving, growing and being present enough to discover our own true purpose and gifts – and then to share that for the benefit of others”.

“Like any other challenging event that arises in life, COVID-19 has only affirmed my desire to focus on life’s more meaningful values, like spreading kindness, having patience, treasuring the simple things, and cherishing others.”

Everyday things we took for granted have suddenly been flipped upside down, delivering a new perspective on what we consider important.

An affective way to snap things into perspective is by chatting to elderly relative, who have experienced the hardships living through World War II and the Great Depression.

Lutheran Services’ Immanuel Gardens resident Joy Hurrell says during the war, travel was a luxury and food was rationed for years. “And here we are complaining about bare shelves for two or three months,” Ms Hurrell says.

Fellow Immanuel Gardens resident Col Spann remembers the struggles his family faced during the Depression. “My earliest memories are that life was hard and my father had great difficulty in keeping food on the table for his large family,” Mr Spann says.

“There were very few ‘treats’ and if you could somehow find a penny to spend, it would buy two chocolate frogs or a penny ice-cream in a cone. But we had a happy enough upbringing.

Much like these historic hardships, COVID-19 has given much of the modern world a new sense of gratefulness and appreciation for life.

Judy Belter is another resident who sees the positive side. She says COVID-19

has taught her to live with less. Her advice to the younger generations is to always respect the humanity in others, as well as be caring and kind.

“We should work much more towards a cleaner and sustainable environment and society for the welfare of our children and grandchildren,” Ms Belter says. “Set goals, pursue worthy purposes, work hard but smart to achieve them. Be caring and loving to you family and fellow beings.”

Expressing a newfound appreciation for life, resident George Cooney says, “Life living with COVID-19 says we cannot be sure what tomorrow has in store, so treat life with respect.

“We should practise quality of life because without quality we do not have anything worth having of value.”

For bestselling authors and Coast power couple Allan and Barbara Pease, the pandemic has significantly changed their lifestyle, yet provided a rare opportunity to reset their values.

ComLink founder Feda Adra is also adapting to the new norm.

ComLink is an aged-care, health and wellbeing service that improves the lives of thousands of people across Queensland. Ms Adra says during the pandemic, ComLink rebranded to Be, and its Vitality Village project continued to hit major milestones.

“I am grateful that I am surrounded by brave and compassionate people who also saw the pandemic as a call to action to strengthen our community,” Ms Adra says.

“The pandemic has strengthened my beliefs and continues to remind me that community, care (self and others), innovation and agility all are important.”

Ms Adra says the meaning of life is about “knowing your purpose, and knowing what sparks joy in your life.

Loved ones, friends, making a difference and moments in nature all help to remind me that I live a blessed and fulfilling life.”

While restrictions have forced us to slow down, spend more time with family, and reassess what is important in life, there has been an increase in depression, anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

Neuropsychotherapist Joanne Wilson says before the pandemic, Australian society was already in the grip of a mental health crisis. This was due to a combination of shrinking households, a greater tendency to be more mobile, severing old-fashioned neighbourly friendships, the increasing rate of divorce, and the information technology boom that has us feeling more connected but more apart from each other.

If you are worried about a loved one’s mental health during this time, Ms Wilson says there are a few red flags found in unusual behaviours to take note of.

“People respond to adversity in various ways,” she says. “Common symptoms include withdrawal, lack of purpose, sleeplessness, feelings of

consistent overwhelm and dread, ruminating and overthinking as well as an inability to cope with small challenges.

“Depressive physical symptoms include weight changes from a varied appetite, and slower in movement and speech. Anxious physical symptoms include dizziness, dry mouth, bowel problems, tightness or pain in the chest, a racing heart and shortness of breath, hot or cold flushes.”

While restrictions are lifting on the Sunshine Coast, the effects of COVID-19 continue to linger. That’s why it’s so important to constantly prioritise your mental health and wellbeing.

Ms Wilson says productive and happy people thrive on respect and connection.

It’s important the people around you feel valued with regular contact to talk through their progress and concerns.

Ms Ashley says yoga, mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools to maintain resilience during turbulent times. “As the COVID situation unfolded, there was indeed a great rise in uncertainty, which is a massive trigger for anxiety,” she says.

“Our mind races off into a future place fearing change and unpleasantness. This then leads to a lot of people living out of survival mode (think panic-buying) rather than remaining calm enough to operate from a state of higher consciousness where we can access qualities like generosity and compassion.”

Ms Ashley says practices such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness teach us that no matter what happens in life, our perspective on the event influences how it will impact us.

A global event as drastic as COVID-19 has no doubt affected everyone’s lives, some more so than others. While the horrific consequences have been felt across the globe, it’s important to remember the positive effects the pandemic has given humanity.

BACK IN THE AIR After three months, Sunshine Coast Airport is welcoming passengers back on established and new routes. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

assengers will once again take off and land in the region with Sunshine Coast Airport set to recommence services after three long months of grounded flights.

From today, July 10, domestic services will operate daily, with a new flight to Cairns due to take off on July 17.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie says regular passenger flights between the Sunshine Coast and Sydney have been confirmed. “We’ll host a daily flight to Sydney with Jetstar and up to five services a week with Virgin Australia, and we anticipate that offering will grow as further border and travel restrictions are lifted,” Mr Brodie says.

“We’re also incredibly excited to launch our new three-times-a-week Cairns service from Friday, July 17 with Alliance Airlines, marking the first time ever we’ve flown north from the Sunshine Coast.”

Visit Sunshine Coast Interim CEO Craig Davidson says these direct flights will go a long way towards helping the Sunshine Coast tourism industry move forward in their post-COVID recovery efforts.

“The flights have the dual benefit of

Mr Davidson says the introduction of a flight to Cairns will bring a new market to the region. “Far North Queensland is a new market for us and it is important to grow the connection, because when international flights return, connecting

Cairns to the Sunshine Coast could establish a very strong route for visitors who love nature and want to travel the east coast.”

Mr Brodie says these flights “will be a welcome boost” for many industries impacted by COVID 19. “It’s a strong sign of recovery for our airport and will be a welcome boost for many industries and businesses – like car hire, private transfer companies, accommodation providers and tourism operators,” he says. “We urge locals to fly local and book a flight from the Sunshine Coast and encourage their southern visitors to do so too.”

FESTIVAL CANCELLED

T

here was no song in his heart when Caloundra Music Festival (CMF) director Richie Eyles announced the cancellation of the 2020 festival last week.

The CMF, which started in 2007, is one of the Coast’s favourite events, delivering a host of economic, social and cultural benefits for Caloundra and the entire region during the October long weekend.

Mr Eyles says he and the festival crew held off making the decision for as long as possible, but finally in consideration of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, especially as they apply to festivals, they had made the difficult decision to cancel CMF 2020.

“Like many other global and local events, we have to put our plans on pause for this year,” he says.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 councillor Terry Landsberg says the decision to cancel was about the safety of patrons, artists, crew, volunteers, vendors, staff and community.

However, Caloundra will still welcome visitors. “I encourage people to keep their accommodation bookings and still make a weekend of it here in Caloundra and the Sunshine Coast area, in what is the last long weekend in Queensland of the year, as still have plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy,” he says.

CMF will return in 2021. The dates will be confirmed later in the year.

BUDERIM HOSPITAL CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF CARING On July 5, 1980, the Sunshine Coast celebrated the opening of a small community hospital. This year, Buderim Private Hospital is celebrating its 40th year of caring for the Coast community.

The hospital was the vision of local GP’s wife Mrs Elsa Wilson, who told the community of her dream at a dinner party in her home in 1977. She received a warm response and from there a committee was formed and plans developed.

Today, the hospital has grown to include 190 patient beds, eight operating theatres, two cardiovascular theatres and a range of other specialised services such as cardio, mental health, maternity, surgical, rehabilitation and the Sunshine Coast’s first private emergency centre.

General manager Karen Clark says part of the hospital’s anniversary celebrations include opening a new chapel in a more accessible and central location for patients, staff and doctors.

The hospital also has several events and activities planned to celebrate with the hospital team, respecting COVID-19 social distancing restrictions.

Buderim Private Hospital cares for more than 25,000 patients every year, has delivered more than 15,000 babies and employs almost 800 local people.

BACK TO NATURE Sunshine Coast artist Rosie Lloyd-Giblett is thrilled to share her latest works as part of Horizon Festival. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

W

hen COVID-19 restrictions gave Sunshine Coast residents just an hour a day for outside recreation, the impact on visual artist Rosie Lloyd-Giblett was huge.

Ms Lloyd-Giblett thrives on being out in nature, and the Noosaville artist and art educator had a daily ritual of painting en plein that was put on hold as the region battened down the hatches.

While this was devastating for her drive to connect with nature, it gave the mother of four the opportunity to take time to reflect on her past works and look forward to might what be possible in the future.

It was during this time of reflection that Ms Lloyd-Giblett and fellow artist Helena Jackson-Lloyd dreamed up Love Note to the Landscape, which is featured in the Horizon Festival schedule this month.

The artists have spent three separate days painting en plain at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, Coolum’s First Bay and the Mooloolah Wetlands. With the assistance of Coast photographer, videographer and sculpture artist Yanni Van Zijl, they will release still and moving images of their artworks and

how they were created at the three locations.

Ms Lloyd-Giblett says the COVID lockdown took away the freedom to experience and pay respect to the natural environment for a period of time.

However, it also served to grant her the awareness that accessing the natural environment is important to our health and wellbeing. Seeing the number of people who came to watch them create was testament to that.

Ms Lloyd-Giblett grew up on a cattle farm in western Queensland and says art classes and weekend expeditions with her art teacher while attending boarding school “anchored” her in her high school years. “Art was an intuitive thing; something I’ve always liked doing with my hands from when I was a small child.”

She worked in Africa as a volunteer before returning to work in the remote Australia communities of Barunga in the Northern Territory and Lockhart River in Queensland.

These roles, which she thrived in for a decade, allowed Ms Lloyd-Giblett to immerse herself in the varied landscapes and understand how one location is never the same two days in a row. The weather, the season and the time of day all impact the way a landscape looks and feels. As she began to mature as an artist, she says she began responding to the landscape in a more figurative rather than literal way.

Ms Lloyd-Giblett says her style is always evolving and she has reached a point where she can trust her intuition and paints based on what she is feeling more than what she is visually looking at. Her speciality is abstract expressions of a landscape.

“As an artist, you learn all of the skills you need and the rules you need to play by, like how to mix colours and how to draw realistically, then you slowly break down the rules to create your own language.”

Ms Lloyd-Giblett has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 20 years, first in Cooroy and now in Noosaville, and says it is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes.

However, she is still compelled to travel to

remote locations a few weeks a year to experience new environments.

She has received much acclaim throughout her career, including being a finalist in the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards, the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, the EMSLA Still Life Award and winning Caloundra Regional Gallery’s The Local Content Art Prize for best watercolour in 2018.

While accolades are not something Ms Lloyd-Giblett seeks, she says winning the

She is exhibiting The Spaces Between the Trees at the Noosa Regional Gallery until July 18 and says it is her favourite collection to date.

“It’s the first time as a mother that I have finally been able to give my arts practice the full attention,” she says.

“My kids are teenagers now and I am

comfortable in my teaching career, so my art is now part of this harmonious life.

“When I create my work, I try to remember the natural markings on tree bark, flickering leaves, the experience of crouching to touch the earth. I want to share this closeness I feel to the earth with the observer; to smell the foliage, view the coloured pathways and hear the same tune of the natural world that I hear.”

No stranger to Horizon Festival, Ms Lloyd-Giblett exhibited alongside her plein air group as part of the In:Situ exhibition at the Cool Art Picture Framing Gallery in Coolum on August 12 last year.

She says the festival is invaluable for the region. “It’s a bit left of centre and marvellous the Sunshine Coast Council has been able to find a way to run it this year despite the limitations,” she says.

“Helena and I were excited to collaborate on Love Notes to the Landscape.

We meet regularly to draw and paint in national parks throughout the region and we hope our Horizon piece will encourage people to return to the landscapes with a new sense of appreciation for what we have here.”

Sand extraction company pulls appeal Plans to construct a 105-hectare sand extraction facility at Eudlo Flats Road and Maroochydore Road, Forest Glen have ceased with the applicant, Maroochydore Sands, discontinuing the appeal against Sunshine Coast Council. Councillors voted against the proposal in 2016 to extract on average 200,000 tonnes of sand per year, over 30 years. Following the refusal, an appeal was filed by the applicant with the Planning and Environment Court. More than 250 concerned residents opposed the application.

ueenslanders will continue to live a somewhat restricted life until there is a vaccine for COVID-19, the premier says.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says industries will not simply bounce back to the way they operated before the global health crisis.

“It’s never going to be exactly the same, so we are in this post-COVID world,” she says. “Until there is a vaccine, we have to keep up with the social distancing. We never know when there could be a new case.

“We have contact tracing in place ready to go and as we’ve seen, it can emerge very quickly, like it has in Victoria.”

However, the state government will continue to review the remaining limits and may roll them back further, depending on how well Australia and Queensland handle the virus.

Queensland is sending its deputy chief health officer and 40 nurses to Victoria as the state struggles to bring the Melbourne outbreak under control.

The decision comes after weeks of calls from the hospitality and tourism industries for the reopening amid a financial downturn sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Anyone arriving from Victoria will either be turned around at the border or forced to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks at their own cost.

All other visitors will be welcome, but must fill out a declaration that they haven’t been overseas or to Victoria in the 14 days before their arrival.

“We expect people to tell the truth because if it’s found out that they are lying, it is a very serious offence. It is $4000,” Ms Palaszczuk says.

Queensland caravan park owners are already fielding calls from Victorians on how they can get around the rule.

“I’ve spoken to several caravan parks today who say their phones have been running hot, particularly with Victorians trying to find out if they spend 14 days in New South Wales, can they then come into Queensland,” Caravan Parks Association of Queensland general manager Michelle Weston says.

“There are a large number of Victorians who call Queensland home over winter, so with the border restrictions, that will mean a lot of those may not be able to come.”

This perennial dish blossoms in all seasons, at all occasions, with everyone.

INGREDIENTS

Serves 8

• 1½ kg beef eye fillet • 500g mushrooms, sliced • 2 sheets puff pastry • 200g pepper paté

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• ¼ cup brown sugar • ¼ cup macadamia nuts • 2 tbsp brandy • 250g brie

Preheat oven to 180˚C. Season both sides of the beef with sea salt and cracked pepper and in a nonstick frying pan, sear the meat, turning occasionally, for 6 minutes or until browned all over.

Transfer to a plate and set aside to cool completely.

In the same frying pan, add the sliced mushrooms and saute for 6 minutes or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Season with sea salt and cracked pepper and set aside to cool. Join the two sheets of puff pastry together, beat the paté until soft and spread liberally over the pastry, leaving a 2-centimetre border. Top with the mushrooms, pressing gently into the paté. Place the cooled fillet on top of the mushrooms and fold the pastry over the beef to enclose. Tuck the side of pastry under to secure. Place the beef, seam-side down, onto the tray. Decorate the top with strips of pastry and cracked pepper. Bake for 1 hour. Let rest for 10 minutes before transferring to a platter to serve.

BUDERIM FOREST PARK UPGRADE You might have noticed works starting at Buderim Forest Park, with Stage 2 upgrades underway.

Thank you for your patience as part of the track remains temporarily closed during construction. GROWING PAINS

A DELICATE BALANCE

On a recent shopping trip to buy clothes for her daughter, Sami Muirhead was reminded of how quickly our children grow up.

Relaxed restrictions have been hard-earned in Queensland, writes Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane, but risks still remain to health and livelihoods.

ime stops for no man or woman.

Or child. A decade after having kids I still stare at my brood every night when they go to sleep. Yes, I am needy! But don’t you think it is the biggest trip that we’re constantly reminded we cannot freeze time when it comes to our kids growing up?

I can’t tell you the number of parents of grown-up kids who have told me to enjoy every single minute while the kids are little.

I had a moment when I took my nearly 10-year-old daughter shopping for clothing in the holidays. Avalon likes anything that is lose or comfortable. We had a funeral to attend and I wanted something dressy for her, so we headed to the girls section of BIG W and its racks filled with unicorns and sparkly fairies. We looked at each other and realised she is too old for a sea of glitter and frills anymore.

So we went to the adult section, but it was all too old and too big for her. What to do? I told my husband and two sons we had a problem and they swiftly took to those wonderful waiting chairs in the halls of Sunshine Plaza. They seemed oblivious to the shopping quandary we were facing.

But we were up for the challenge!

We should have got the boys some pillows as we ended up shopping for more than an hour and a half. We are training our sons young that waiting on those public couches while your family shops is indeed a life skill. However, my boys would

rather slam their fingers in the car door than wait outside shops.

My daughter and I did find a shop that sells ‘tween’ outfits and we happily left with jeggings and a cool jumper and beanie. It is an outfit I would wear in my size.

One of my very favourite things about having a daughter is when we dress the same. I know this is really cringe-worthy, and when I said maybe I could get the matching beanie I was met with an eye roll from my daughter. An eye roll, people!

When are us women taught to eye roll?

Seriously? It is like some gift we are born with instinctively?

It felt good to be out as we have been home so much during COVID but my heart was a little sad as I sat looking at my beautiful angel, thinking my baby girl has grown up in the blink of an eye. Even with toys she is between two worlds. The curious part of her wants to sit with the adults at barbecues but the kid part of her wants to go and play. Avalon is asking for TikTok on my phone daily and does not think it’s funny when I ask if she wants a clock biscuit. My girl also wants privacy and is getting a great little sense of sarcasm.

They say daughters are your friends when they grow up, so I can only hope she will always want to share the moments that seem small but are big with me and one day she may reconsider the ban on twinning when it comes to matching beanies.

I know many business owners and staff in the hospitality and travel industries who have been severely impacted by the border closures and restrictions put in place to protect the health of the wider community.

They have been crying out for the border to be open in order to get even a small portion of the interstate travellers from down south who spend up big this time of year.

I also know many people who are immunocompromised and have applauded the decisions to close Queensland’s borders to reduce the risk of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases here.

For them, COVID-19 in our country has forced them to stay at home since March as they are highly susceptible to not only contracting the virus, but also having a heightened chance of dying from it.

For the past few months, the premier has put health above everything else despite copping a barrage of criticism. It wouldn’t be an easy position to be in and I admire her stoicism.

From July 10, travel restrictions to and from all states and territories with the exception of Victoria and Western Australia will be lifted.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has banned anyone from Victoria from entering and any Queenslanders from visiting the southern state after an increase of 355 surge in new last week.

Anyone who has travelled from Victoria, including returning Queenslanders, will have to quarantine at a hotel at their own expense for 14 days.

Considering Australia is a single nation, it is surprising to see every state taking such a different stance on interstate travel.

Since restrictions on patronage numbers at cafes and restaurants have been lifted, it has been amazing to see venues once more at capacity, as Queenslanders flock here to holiday.

I never thought I would see the day when I would welcome seeing traffic backed up on the Bruce Highway – it was just a small sign that things are beginning to bloom once more here on the Coast.

While it will be great for our hospitality, accommodation and travel-based businesses to begin servicing more clients, I can only hope our premier and her team of experts are keeping a close eye on the virus and its continued spread in Victoria.

We have all put in the hard yards to eradicate COVID-19 from the Sunshine Coast. It would be an immense shame to see all that work undone by simultaneously relaxing our intrastate restrictions while throwing open our borders.

Everyone will congregate in the area where you can sit or recline in the water, so take extra care here and make the effort with steps and swim-up bench areas. If you’re including a spa or a set of steps, build them within the pool itself, or partly in the water.

Plan to build the pool in a part of your garden that won’t section off a whole portion of the yard. It should flow with the home with matching levels, materials and features.

If you have a smaller yard, build the sides of the pool against your boundary so that you can use the boundary as part of the sides of the pool and/or fence. You don’t need to be able to get into the pool from all sides – you really only need one or two sides open to access.

You should also situate the pool somewhere where it’s visible from the main living areas of the house so that you can always keep an eye on those swimming, and look out on it as a feature. Design and build with the kids in mind – when they’re grown up they’ll bring the grandkids and if you sell, your home will appeal to families.

When people get into and get out of the pool they are usually coming from the house, so place the pool fence gate and steps in a line that leads towards the house door.

W

ith dividend cuts gathering pace, income investors will need to reassess their investments in yield stocks.

The latest consensus estimates on dividends over the next 12 months imply an average yield on the S&P/ASX 200 Index of around 3.5 per cent. This is well down from the 4.5 to five per cent investors would have been accustomed to in the last few years.

The diminishing dividend yield in the market will, in our view, make incomegenerating stocks even more attractive, due to the lack of alternatives. Not only are there fewer high-yielding companies to choose from, there is also little income to be earned by sitting in cash given

record low interest rates. Right now, the average 12-month forward dividend yield on the S&P/ASX 200 Index is sitting 2.5 percentage points above a one-year term deposit rate – a wider spread than normal. This should be enough to motivate investors to continue holding high-yielding equities rather than cash.

Income investors need to be cognisant that one of the consequences of COVID-19 has been a reprioritisation of capital management strategies by companies. In an effort to conserve cash, several have been forced to suspend or

For income investors, this could be a game changer, as some investments are made for income and may no longer fit the criteria, at least not for the next six to twelve months. This includes companies that are unlikely to pay a dividend at the next result, and

therefore offer no income yield for shareholders for at least the next six months. These companies include Crown Resorts, Flight Centre, Webjet and SEEK. There are also companies that we estimate could pay a dividend but at a reduced rate, which would leave their dividend yield below the market average.

The companies included here are the names that many people rely on because of their usual attractive dividend and include ANZ Bank, NAB and Westpac.

At the other end of the spectrum, however, are companies that should

continue to sustain income for portfolios, given we estimate they can maintain or increase their dividend in FY20, while generating an above-market dividend yield. This should include Amcor, BWP Trust (who hasn’t been to a Bunnings recently!) and Telstra.

So what’s next, JobTweaker perhaps?

Chris Richardson from Deloitte Access Economics believes government support will be needed for quite some time, as the country recovers from the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

“More dollars are needed,” Mr Richardson says. “How much more depends on our success against the virus and in opening up. But the recession is changing shape fast, so the nature, timing and dollars of support needs to change fast.”

Deloitte’s quarterly business outlook estimates Australia’s economy will shrink by three per cent this year.

Mr Richardson says Australia’s relative success in fighting the virus gives it more flexibility to open up the economy.

He says many of Australia’s key trading partners also battle the virus well, while it looks like being a “corker of a year” for farmers too. “So the recession may well have already past its worst,” he adds.

“Even so, families are struggling with the toxic trio of high debt, high unemployment and low confidence. The ranks of the unemployed will be badly swollen for a while.”

Government spending is expected to hold up the economy in the short term.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced an extra $525 million for Victorian road and rail projects on Monday, after detailing similar packages for other states in recent weeks.

Deloitte expects the unemployment rate to be 8.2 per cent for the 2020/21 financial year, the equivalent of over 1.1 million people being out of work. The group does not expect the rate to return to pre-coronavirus levels until 2023/24.

Wage growth is expected to lag behind inflation out to 2024/25, while full-time employment will grow slower than part-time jobs.

A superannuation split can occur when an agreement or court order allows a portion of one party’s super to be transferred into the fund of the other person following a relationship breakdown. This enables both parties to have an asset they can draw upon in retirement.

COVID-19 has affected share markets and some super funds have dropped in value by as much as 30 per cent.

If a super fund is valued too soon, and the market drops after the valuation, a split which uses a dollar figure could impact the fund left with the member who retains the balance.

There are options to ensure a member does not pay more than what was intended in family law negotiations, including ensuring super splitting takes effect retrospectively so it maintains the agreed proportionate adjustment compared with the total super value.

Alternatively, the parties can provide for the division of the super fund to be on a percentage basis, although this also has risks.

Super splitting can be complex, so ensure you engage an experienced family lawyer to provide adequate advice and ensure your rights are protected.

Mr Weir says he has many fond memories of growing up with his three siblings on the block of land.

His father Norman, or ‘Norm’ as he was affectionately known, was one of the first surfers in Maroochydore and the “unofficial� lifeguard of the ’50s and ’60s. “I have a lot of memories of my parents growing up here.

“We’ve had a good time.�

Mr Weir says the decision to sell was a “bit hard� but the right one for the family. “It’s sad in a lot of ways but it’s a nice feeling to know we will be missed.�

Mr Weir says he now plans to spend most of his time doing what he loves, surfing.

This weekend promises small surf with light winds and maybe some showers. Get out there.

It has certainly got a little cooler of late so maybe upgrade your wetsuit if needed. There are a lot more waves forecast. When you ask? I’m not quite sure, but they are coming!

Hearing of some pretty bad behaviour in the surf of late so if you see it maybe call it out.
