From the editor ast month we called on our readers to take part in our COVID-19 survey. The aim was to gauge the sentiment of the community amid the crisis and to get a sense of how the Coast is riding this unforeseen wave.

Well, the results are in and I can report that you are a positive bunch! A whopping 97 per cent of respondents agree that local businesses will bounce back following the crisis. And it seems that keeping money local is a top priority.

Seventy per cent of people believe that spending dollars locally is of high importance to assist economic recovery.

Interestingly, 70 per cent of respondents say they shopped online during restrictions.

GLOBALLY THE PANDEMIC IS ACCELERATING, NOT SLOWING While Queenslanders celebrate COVID-19 success, the world is in turmoil, writes University of Sydney Assoc Prof Adam Kamradt-Scott

A

round the world, the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating. While some countries such as Australia and New Zealand have managed to flatten the curve, in many other parts of the world the number of cases has continued to reach new highs.

Less than two weeks ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recorded 183,000 new cases – the single largest number of new cases reported in one day.

During the following week, there were more

than 150,000 new cases per day on three separate days.

The numbers of new infections are now growing at such a rate that while it took some three months to reach the first one million cases, the last million cases was reached in just eight days. The total number of COVID-19 infections now exceeds 10 million worldwide.

Even more tragically, the deaths from COVID-19 are also growing. The United States has recorded more than 120,000

fatalities, while Brazil has exceeded 55,000 deaths related to COVID-19. The situation has become so dire that Latin America’s largest country is reporting an average of 1000 deaths every day.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the world is dangerously divided. He has cautioned against the ongoing politicisation of the pandemic and called for solidarity and leadership, noting that countries should not have to choose “between lives and livelihoods”.

These warnings are likely to go unheeded, if recent developments are anything to go by. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, who has railed against “jobkilling” social distancing measures, appears unrepentant for firing his health minister even as he confronts escalating numbers of infections and an economic downturn in which Brazil’s economy is expected to shrink by 6.2 per cent.

In the United States, President Donald Trump reportedly joked his country should slow down testing because public health authorities were identifying too many COVID-19 cases. Trump made his remarks even as news emerged that more than two dozen public health officials across the US have been either fired, resigned or retired due to threats of physical violence, intimidation or persecution.

In many parts of the world, the pandemic is only starting to make its presence felt. Indonesia has seen an alarming increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases. Likewise, India, which on Sunday recorded 19,900 new cases, has now risen to become the fourth worst-affected country in the world.

Officially, India has documented just over 528,000 cases and 16,000 deaths, but these numbers are generally believed to be significantly under-reported.

More disturbingly, even those countries that showed initial signs of recovery are continuing to struggle with the virus. South Korea, which has been regarded for months as a poster child of an efficient COVID-19 response, has now entered a “second wave”, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). The KCDC said the new cases were driven by the May holiday period, when coronavirus guidelines were relaxed, and particularly by young people via nightclubs and bars.

Fears of a second wave have also emerged in Iran, while China is now dealing with new cases following an outbreak in Beijing.

Despite the dire global situation, there are a handful of places that have demonstrated it’s possible to suppress the virus’ transmission (at least for now). New Zealand recorded just two new cases on Monday, despite dropping almost all its coronavirus restrictions. Several Pacific Island states, including Fiji, Somoa, Tonga and Vanuatu, have maintained zero active cases. And outside of ongoing community transmission in parts of Melbourne, Australia overall has continued to record very few new cases despite restrictions easing across most of the country.

What remains abundantly clear is that testing, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine, and community engagement are essential to halting the spread of COVID-19 across the world. Importantly, though, all of these measures depend on leadership and a shared sense of vulnerability. We need to marshal that, putting aside our differences and coming together to defeat a common foe.

And we need to do it now.

Looking back GST Wednesday, July 1 marked 20 years since John Howard’s controversial Goods and Services Tax was introduced. WORDS: AAP Revenue raised from the 10 per cent GST goes straight to funding the states and territories. When John Howard and Peter Costello introduced the GST, it allowed them to cut personal income taxes and get rid of numerous state imposts. But introducing such a new consumption tax was far from easy.

Deloitte Access Economics partner Chris Richardson recalls there were plenty of newspaper headlines at the time saying it was a disaster, but he admires the fact that Mr Howard and Mr Costello stuck with it. “It was a very courageous moment,” he says.

That’s not to say life was perfect when GST graced the nation’s cash registers. Inflation soared to six per cent as it accounted for the 10 per cent impost. The economy also narrowly avoided plunging into recession. To counter fears that future governments could lift the GST rate at whim, Mr Costello imposed that every state and territory and both the House of Representatives and Senate would have to agree to any change.

And that’s largely the reason why the structure of the GST remains untouched to this day, because it is so politically hard to make changes.

A new day

dawns The world may be facing the worst pandemic and economic crisis in 100 years, but Sunshine Coast residents remain positive.

In fact, according to My Weekly Preview’s COVID-19 survey conducted last month, 97 per cent of you believe that the business community will bounce back strongly once restrictions are lifted, while 89 per cent agree the Coast will come out of the crisis stronger than other regions in Australia.

There is little doubt that business and industry confidence remains the number one focus of both the community and business leaders as we continue to navigate through the crisis.

Sunshine Coast Council’s $782 million budget was handed down last Thursday with Mayor Mark Jamieson citing economic recovery as the cornerstone of the plan.

No one denies it’s going to be a tough road forward, but with community sentiment and business collaborations at an all-time high, leaders are confident the Coast can navigate towards a successful future.

The trades, landscaping and building industries are receiving a boost with 43 per cent of survey respondents undergoing a home improvement project since the crisis began. These are the projects they are completing.

Just over half of respondents believe the local economy will be the same or better than before the crisis once restrictions have completely lifted.

Five out of 10 people (50%) have experienced a cruising holiday.

However, it’s going to take a little convincing to get them back on board with only 13% comfortable to cruise once restrictions are lifted.

97% think local tourism will bounce back strongly in regards to visitors from within southeast Queensland.

HEALTHY AUSTRALIANS URGED TO GIVE BLOOD Last week was National Blood Donor Week, and residents are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves. WORDS: Layne Whitburn.

OVID-19 has caused many cancellations, but the need for blood donors remains as critical as ever.

According to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, the Sunshine Coast needs 200 to 250 new donors each month.

Just one blood donation can save up to three lives, while one in three Australians will need blood or blood products throughout their lifetime.

Belinda Smetioukh from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood says the nation records 29,000 blood donations a week – that’s 1.5 million donors per year.

Over the peak of COVID-19 restrictions, those figures dropped dramatically with the service recording about 800 cancellations a day, despite it being an essential service.

“We put the call out to all of our donors to remind them that donating blood is considered an essential service, and the response from Australians rolling up their sleeves was really great to see,” Ms Smetioukh says.

Now, with COVID-19 restrictions easing, Lifeblood is calling on eligible Australians to become blood donors as

well as existing donors to honour their appointments, especially ahead of the traditionally challenging winter period.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service physiotherapist Nicholas Brooke recently donated blood for the first time, and says he wishes he started donating sooner.

“I have always been meaning to start giving blood, but never got around to organising a donation… but it was so quick and easy to do,” Mr Brooke says.

“I downloaded the blood donor app in the waiting room and booked in for my next donation before leaving the clinic.”

While live-saving blood donations remain essential, the demand for plasma donations is also increasing.

New medical research has discovered convalescent plasma donations by people who have recovered from COVID-19 may help boost the immunity of patients still battling the disease.

Convalescent plasma is the liquid part of blood that contains antibodies. Once someone has recovered from COVID-19, the virus antibodies stay in their plasma.

to treat patients in clinical trials, both as a form of direct treatment and as a medication called COVID-19 Immunoglobulin, which may provide passive immunity against coronavirus infections.”

Convalescent plasma can be donated only by someone with a confirmed laboratory diagnosis of COVID-19, who has fully recovered from the virus and been symptom-free for at least 28 days.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, we have 14 convalescent plasma donors, who so far have made 26 donations.

Convalescent plasma is being trailed as a treatment for patients suffering from COVID-19 in a number of countries including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and China.

“Donating plasma is a simple, powerful act that could help a patient struggling to fight the disease. It is a real opportunity for people who have battled COVID-19 to become part of a potential solution,” Ms Park says.

“It’s important to note that safety is Lifeblood’s number one priority and there is no risk to donors or staff from this initiative.

“Our convalescent plasma donors will have to satisfy the same strict eligibility criteria as our other donors and the process of collecting convalescent plasma

She says that Lifeblood donor centres are safe places to visit with strict sanitation protocols in place as well as social distancing rules.

Council reaches Brisbane Road deal Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed KPAT Asset Management to develop the parcel of land fronting Brisbane Road and First Avenue, Mooloolaba. The council also authorised acting CEO Warren Bunker to negotiate and execute contracts for the development and sale of this portion of the Brisbane Road car park site. Mr Bunker says the evaluation panel concluded in early 2020 that the submission from KPAT Asset Management was stronger and more advantageous to the council and the community. The proposal includes a 4.5-star hotel development by the Minor Hotel Group, comprising 160 rooms, additional car parking and ground-level retail space. “It is anticipated that subject to successfully negotiating the necessary contracts and the proponent obtaining the requisite development approvals, approximately 186 construction workers would be involved throughout construction with an ongoing 137 jobs in the local retail and accommodation sector,’’ Mr Bunker says. Construction is expected to start in mid-2022 subject to development approval.

Initial consultation on the M2M cycleway project was held late last year. The feedback received has been used to inform the planning and develop a preferred option for Stage 6.

BUDGET TIME FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST Sunshine Coast Council’s recent budget is focused on economic stimulus, job creation and an investment in capital works.

ast Thursday, Sunshine Coast Council handed down its $782 million budget citing economic recovery as the cornerstone of the plan.

Delivering the 2020-21 budget, Mayor Mark Jamieson acknowledges the year has been like no other.

“As we seek to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our council has left no stone unturned as we fulfil our role as guardians of the wellbeing of our community,’’ he says.

While there is an overall general rate increase of two per cent, and the cost to collect a 240-litre wheelie bin will increase by $10.50, most ratepayers on the minimum general rate will pay the same as last year thanks to the introduction of a COVID rebate, he says.

“Reducing pressure on ratepayers at this time has been our number one priority.

With this in mind, council’s budget provides financial relief for general rate ratepayers through a $35 COVID rebate on the July rate notice.

“The rebate will be in addition to the existing on-time rates payment discount council offers and pensioners will also continue to receive the pensioner rebate.”

The council’s budget includes an increase in the community grants program from $3 million last financial year to $4.5 million. It also includes a $243 million investment in capital projects, which are estimated to support more than 1000 jobs and boost the economy by $300 million.

Mayor Jamieson says the council will continue its commitment to major projects to help drive a stronger local economy, generate employment and

provide access to new services for the community. “The new runway is open and the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion project is on schedule to be completed in full by the end of this year, with $36.7 million allocated as part of the total project delivery budget,” he says.

The project is expected to deliver $4.1 billion to the local economy by 2040 and generate around 2230 local jobs.

“Council will also allocate $40 million to start construction of the new City Hall in the Maroochydore City Centre, which will generate an estimated 300 jobs at a time when this employment stimulus is needed most in our region.”

The renewed focus comes as the council unveiled its third strategy of the Economic Resurgence Plan, which aims to fast-track recovery and positively position the region in domestic and global markets.

Last week, Mr Jamieson announced the formation of a new taskforce and a digital skilling collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The taskforce includes seven local business leaders and will be led

by Economic Portfolio councillors Terry Landsberg and Jason O’Pray.

The group will be charged with overseeing the delivery of a third economic stimulus package and providing ongoing support to local businesses. Mr Jamieson says re-energising the economy, supporting shovel-ready projects and backing local businesses are the key priorities of the Economic Resurgence Plan.

1. Boreen Point Boreen Point is a small village on the shores of Lake Cootharaba. The village is about 20 kilometres by sealed road from Tewantin. A haven for sailing and boating enthusiasts, Boreen Point has holiday cottages, a general store, caravan parks and boat hire facilities.

2. Kenilworth Charming, idyllic, restful, and only a 50-minute drive from Maroochydore, Kenilworth is a must-visit for any Coast local. Driving into Kenilworth is like stepping back in time – the council has restored the 1920s style buildings giving the town a rustic charm that is rare to find.

Visit the famous Kenilworth Bakery for some tasty treats, then walk off those extra carbs by exploring one of many hiking trails in the area, like Fig Tree Walk. Which is your favourite Arnott’s biscuit?

Sami Muirhead has been pondering the issue that could divide the nation.

In the past few months, Rebecca Grisman has sorted her paperwork, got on top of her business and restructured her life.

ow do you say Nice biscuit?

Do you say ‘nice’ as in your grandma is a nice lady who likes to make chocolate slice?

Do you say ‘niece’ to keep the peace?

Debate has been bubbling away over the Aussie afternoon tea staple after media identity Bruno Bouchet decreed the order of rankings – from top to bottom – of the popular packet of mixed Arnott’s bickies.

The Milk Arrowroot was awarded the best biscuit. Yes, the Arrowroot is a solid performer and good for many occasions, ranging from making lady-bug biscuits for kid’s birthday parties to helping to recover from a bout of food poisoning. But the top Arnott’s biscuit? No way!

Bruno Bouchet disagrees. “The Milk Arrowroot is a star. Let’s unpack it. It has a subtle flavour without the bells and whistles of the cream-filled biscuits and it does not rely on any gimmicky shapes.

And then you start to add margarine or butter on top of it, and it is just an amazing snack that is in a category of its own that remains one of the greatest culinary delights you will ever experience.

“I also give it extra points because it is the only biscuit that when you bite into it, it gives you a really nice imprint of your teeth.”

Controversially, the Monte Carlo came near the bottom end of the 12 ranked biscuits. Come on, Bruno! The Monte Carlo is royalty, while Nice biscuits are

literally prison biscuits. True story. Who takes a Nice before pocketing a pink cream-filled Monte Carlo? No one!

Bruno says the Monte Carlo biscuit is too thick and that is why he has marked it down in points. “Sure, the vanilla and jam cream layer is delicious, but the two biscuits the cream is jammed between are too thick and crumbly. It could be made much better if Arnott’s used the same biscuits that they use in the Orange Slice,” he says.

At the very bottom of the pile is the Butternut Snap, which sparked no debate because no one seems to care about it.

I say ‘Niece’ biscuit, but my inner bogan sometimes calls them ‘noice’ as I, at times, do channel Kath and Kim. My brother pronounces the biscuit as “Who ate the bloody Kingstons?” while my husband says he enjoys a nice Nice biscuit. In the end, Arnott’s has settled the age-old debate – “Nice biscuits were named after the city in the South of France and are pronounced the same as that city.

They have been part of the Arnott’s range since 1922,” Arnott’s wrote on Twitter.

For those of you playing at home, the entire list was this: Milk Arrowroot, Kingston, Nice, Choc Ripple, Scotch Finger, Orange Slice, Milk Coffee, Delta Cream, Teddy Bear, Monte Carlo, Shortbread Cream, Butternut Snap.

s anyone else thinking these past few months of worldwide change, focus on community health and personal responsibility, and enforced time at home, have been really educational?

It has been challenging for many and certainly not all positive for me, but it has enabled me to do some things I’ve always wanted but never made time to do. Like catch up on and really understand my tax return and superannuation! For the first time I am confident I know exactly my position, where every dollar goes, and that I won’t be retiring any time soon.

I also found and filed all the important documents of our lives, once I realised some were missing and some outdated when I needed them urgently. I have fully read all my insurances too, and that effort is underrated. I feel disaster-ready.

A little less intensely, I have enjoyed reading food and travel magazines from cover to cover, in one sitting. I stacked up the books I have not read, forgave myself and took those I never will to donate to the local library, then sorted my wardrobe.

Does everyone have a mental list of the things you’d do, with more time? What would it take to follow through?

In these months I decided each time I worried about the world I’d reach out to someone. It took effort to call a childhood friend and reconnect, and to contact an old boss to ask for work. Both conversations helped immensely. It was harder to call an

advisor and navigate pages of financial information to restructure my commitments and business, which we both agreed was not viable post-pandemic.

That led to calling a course provider, then a funding line, and enrolling to study for a new industry career. All steps I’d pondered previously and not taken. A big lesson during isolation was discovering how connecting to a person helped me solve a problem better than I could by myself.

My favourite epiphany was a conversation with a stranger that sparked

“Each time I worried about the world I’d reach out to someone” online friendships with Italian and French winemakers in lockdown, Zoom tastings, and invitations to share my side hustle of wine writing as translated articles overseas, and to join them at a conference when the world can meet again. Mixing with famous family winemakers to plan future adventures was not the outcome I imagined in the first weeks of COVID-19 but has resulted from taking each day one small step at a time, remembering that I am not walking this path alone. Ironically, in March the world seemed very large and scary and now it feels a little closer.

OBESITY LINKED TO DEMENTIA

P

eople in their 50s who are obese have a 31 per cent increased risk of dementia later in life compared with those of the same age with normal weight, a new study suggests.

Scientists from University College London, who conducted the research, say this risk may be particularly high for

women who have abdominal obesity. The researchers said the findings, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, suggest keeping body mass index under control could play a “significant role” in reducing the risk.

Dr Dorina Cadar, from UCL’s Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, was a

senior author on the study, says, “Both BMI and waist circumference status should be monitored to avoid metabolic or vascular complications. Hence, reducing weight to optimal levels is recommended by adopting healthy and balanced patterns of eating… appropriate physical exercise and reduced alcohol consumption throughout the course of the entire adult life span.”

The research team analysed data gathered from more than 6500 people. The participants did not have dementia at the start of the study.

Compared with those with BMIs at normal levels (18.5 to 24.9), the team found those whose BMI was 30 or higher at the start of the study period had a 31 per cent greater risk of dementia, at an average of 11 years later. When waist circumference and BMI were viewed in combination, obese study participants of either gender showed a 28 per cent greater risk of dementia compared with those in the normal range.

UCL Professor Andrew Steptoe says dementia is one of the major health challenges of the 21st century that could threaten successful ageing of the population. “By identifying factors that may raise dementia risk that are influenced by lifestyle factors, we hope that a substantial portion, but admittedly not all, of dementia cases can be prevented through public health interventions.”

Eat right The Australian Government’s Eat for Health initiative recommends five daily guidelines.

1. Be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs.

2. Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods including fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains (mostly wholegrain or high cereal fibre varieties), lean meat and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds, milk, yoghurt and cheese (mostly reduced fat).

3. Limit intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt, added sugars and alcohol. Replace high-fat foods such as butter and cream with foods which contain predominantly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats such as oils, spreads, nut butters and avocado.

4. Encourage, support and promote breastfeeding 5. Care for your food – prepare and store it safely.

CONSTRUCTION BACK ON TRACK Habitat Development Group is set to start construction of Market Lane Residences, its new Maroochydore City Centre development.

risbane-based Habitat Development Group has announced construction of its $83 million Market Lane Residences in the new Maroochydore CBD project will commence in late July this year.

Located at the Mundoo Boulevard entrance, Market Lane Residences will comprise 146 two- and three- bedroom apartments elevated across 14 levels over two towers, plus six SOHO (small office home office) townhomes and ground-floor retail spaces.

Habitat Development Group director Cleighton Clark says he’s pleased to lock in a date to commence construction after delays due to COVID-19. “Despite the disruption caused by COVID-19, we’re looking at our investment in the future city centre as a long-term commitment and we’re very excited to be commencing the first residential buildings in the precinct at the end of next month.

“We think council and SunCentral have done a terrific job with their vision for the Maroochydore City Centre – it’s an exciting, world-class precinct. The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in the

country and we see an exciting period of growth, in particular the Maroochydore City Centre, over the next five to 10 years.

“We’re a privately owned business based in Brisbane and being privately owned, we can invest in these sorts of opportunities with the long term in mind without getting caught up in short-termism or short-term fluctuations,” he adds. “Since we commenced 15 years ago, we’ve always based our strategy with

the best long-term results in mind, and the Maroochydore City Centre is a precinct we think has tremendous potential.”

Mr Clark has also secured a second development site in the greenfield CBD project. “I’m also delighted to announce that Habitat Development Group has secured a second site in the precinct, which is located on Sunshine Coast Parade and will be known as The Corso Residences. We are excited to have secured a pipeline of local projects to keep our team and our subcontractors employed and continue our contribution to the local economy over the next few years,” he says.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says he’s looking forward to seeing the Habitat team on site to break ground.

“I commend Habitat Development Group for their foresight and enthusiasm in embracing our vision for the new Maroochydore City Centre,” he says. “This project will provide a new accommodation option for some of the thousands of people who will ultimately work in the Maroochydore City Centre.

“Having people live close to where they work in our new city centre adds to the

vibrancy and activation of the city core, which is an important and attractive feature of some of the leading cities across the globe.

“From an economic point of view, the commencement of the Market Lane project next month comes at an important time as the region starts to make its way through the recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, by creating new employment opportunities for local tradespeople and suppliers,” Mayor Jamieson adds.

SunCentral CEO John Knaggs says it’s important to have construction start on site as the first commercial building in the CBD, Foundation Place, is due for completion in late September this year.

“We are also thrilled with Cleighton’s commitment and confidence in the Sunshine Coast and the city centre project by securing a second site for Habitat Development Group,” Mr Knaggs says.

“It’s a significant shot in the arm for the project, particularly as we emerge from the impact of COVID-19, and it also reinforces our urban design and planning principles to create a vibrant city centre.”

Well right now I should be on a boat in Sumatra on a surf trip. Thanks to this pesky COVID-19 issue, everything was cancelled. So I thought, I wonder if I would have scored some waves? So I had a look at a current surf report. Well that was a mistake – it appears to range everywhere from four to eight foot for the next week, and no wind!

Instead, I am stuck here with small but clean waves predicted on Saturday.

Head north is my advice!

I guess it’s not a bad back-up plan.

As Neil Young says, “Keep on rockin’ in the free world.”
