RAMON TAKES THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED Former rally driver and successful businessman Ramon Vila Altimir is proving it’s never too late to develop your skills, after completing a Diploma of Business and Diploma of Leadership and Management through TAFE Queensland.

He may have over a decade of experience running two internationally successful businesses, but for Ramon Vila Altimir there is always an opportunity to learn more.

“I have a friend from Barcelona who studied at TAFE Queensland in Hervey Bay and he and his family had a wonderful experience,” Ramon said.

As the owner and managing director of Spanish logistics and communication company Driving Events, and the strategy advisor and principal investor of Italian food distribution business Mammafiore, Ramon has a wealth of knowledge spanning many facets of the business world. But that hasn’t stopped the 57-year-old father-of-three from Barcelona from developing his skills further.

“I started out studying English, which was a great experience with great teachers, and from there I enrolled in the Diploma of Business. When I saw it was offered as a dual qualification with the Diploma of Leadership and Management, it seemed perfect for my situation.”

After moving to Australia with his wife and teenage sons in 2018, Ramon jumped at the chance to enrol at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, where he is currently completing a Diploma of Business and Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Ramon spent his youth as a Nissan factory rally driver, racing across the globe for more than 20 years in prestigious competitions, including the notoriously difficult Dakar Rally.

At the same time, the passionate car enthusiast made a living helping people explore some of the most amazing places on the planet, by organising 4x4 adventures around the world.

In 2004, Ramon decided to use his knowledge of the motor industry to start his own business dedicated to launching new international vehicles for a variety of car manufacturers, with Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi and VW just some of the brands

among his clientele. Driving Events has since grown so successful that Ramon split the company into two, establishing Driving Logistics in 2017.

In 2010, Ramon also diverged into food distribution by investing in Mammafiore, which he continues to run simultaneously with Driving Events and Driving Logistics from Australia while he studies. It’s a lot to juggle, but for Ramon it’s been an incredibly valuable experience – particularly over the last few months.

“You don’t realise what you will have to deal with until you are in front of any management challenges, and this

“From my perspective, it has helped me understand my mistakes and learn from them. But the leadership side of my studies has been fantastic too; to do business you must integrate management knowledge, but without leadership it would be very difficult to succeed in any of the other areas.”

Above all else, it is the dedication and professionalism of his teachers that has impressed Ramon most – values he said they have demonstrated first hand throughout his entire experience.

“I now have a clear strategy for both companies – the biggest challenge is to keep my teams motivated and thinking positively about the future.”

Although he has already completed an international business course and training in sales in the past, Ramon said his TAFE Queensland diploma has provided him with many valuable lessons that he wishes he knew sooner.

From the editor The Easter school holidays are all but a hazy distant memory. They passed in a blur of DIY treasure hunts, craft projects, LEGO challenges and COVID-19 concerns.

The winter holidays are shaping up to be quite different, and while our days won’t be completely back to ‘normal’, it will be nice to have a little less worry and a little more freedom.

There will be plenty happening around the region during the next two weeks, from Ferris wheel rides (we can’t wait!) to the opening of some of the Coast’s most celebrated tourist attractions.

I’ve already planned to take advantage of the school-free days by packing the car with a picnic and exploring a few of the

Sunshine Coast’s most beautiful attractions. From beaches to the hinterland, we really do have it all.

AUSTRALIA REMEMBERS FORGOTTEN WAR IN KOREA It’s been seventy years since hostilities on the Korean Peninsula escalated into a war that lasted three years. WORDS: By Max Blenkin, AAP.

F

ive years after the end of World War II, Australian soldiers were again on the frontline, this time on the Korean Peninsula in a conflict that ran for three years.

The Korean War, which started on June 25, 1950 – 70 years ago – has been termed the forgotten war, overshadowed by WWII and Vietnam.

A total of 14,087 Australians served there and at the peak, Australia had sent two infantry battalions, a fighter squadron, an aircraft carrier and two destroyers – the largest contingent after the US, UK and

South Korea. In all, 339 Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen fought and died in the Korean War, with another 1216 wounded.

So how did it all happen?

After Japan was defeated in 1945, Korea was divided across the 38th parallel with the Soviets holding the north and the US the south. Reunification plans faltered with both sides sponsoring leaders, respectively Kim Il-sung, grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-un, and Syngman Rhee.

Hostilities escalated with the withdrawal of US and Soviet forces and turned into full-scale war when the communist north

invaded the south on June 25, 1950.

Great power miscalculations shaped what followed. With attention focused on Europe, the US hadn’t made adequately clear that it would resist North Korean aggression. For its part, the USSR happened to be boycotting the new United Nations, allowing the US to orchestrate a combined western response that would otherwise have been vetoed.

Sixteen nations eventually contributed forces to what remains the UN’s biggest and bloodiest peacekeeping operation.

Five days after the outbreak, Australia announced it would send troops. There were even some close, with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), on occupation duties in Japan.

Mindful of the mauling of ill-prepared US troops who went straight to Korea from comfortable billets in Japan, Australia delayed for intensive training and reinforcement. More promptly into action was RAAF’s 77 Squadron, also from Japan.

Its Mustang fighters escorted American bombers on a mission on July 1. By ceasefire, the squadron had been in action for three years, flying 4836 missions and losing 42 pilots.

By the time 3RAR arrived in late September 1950 it seemed to be all over.

North Korean forces had initially compressed UN forces into an enclave at the bottom of the peninsula. But on September 15, UN commander General Douglas MacArthur staged the brilliant amphibious landing at Inchon, halfway up the peninsula, resulting in the virtual collapse of the North Korean invasion.

UN troops headed north towards the border with China, heedless of diplomatic warnings from China that it would intervene. 3RAR, operating as part of a Commonwealth Brigade, was marginally better placed as the weight of 150,000

Chinese troops fell on the extended UN force in late October. So everyone headed south again. That retreat also marked the arrival of winter with a bitterness that remains an enduring memory for veterans.

The front stabilised as the Chinese outran their supply lines and UN forces settled into defensible positions. A series of large and small offensives followed, as both sides sought to win territory.

Among many clashes, Australians were involved in two major battles – Kapyong and Maryang San. Kapyong, from April 23 to 25, 1951, was actually a dogged defence against a major

“[It] remains the UN’s biggest and bloodiest peacekeeping operation” Chinese offensive. When the attack fell, the Commonwealth Brigade was in reserve and it moved up to support US and Korean units, forming hasty defensive positions.

From the evening of April 23, 3RAR withstood repeated assaults. It gave ground but the Chinese never penetrated main positions and gave up on Anzac Day morning. Thirty-two Australians died, 59 were wounded with three taken prisoner.

Maryang San was a successful attack on strongly defended hills between October 3 and 8, 1951. After securing each objective, the diggers had to repel counterattacks, a process which continued for five days.

Like veterans of WWII, the number of Korean veterans is diminishing. But their contribution has been commemorated at recent events around Australia.

This month marks 43 years since legendary musician Elvis Presley took to the stage for his last concert. It was held in Indianapolis where he performed in front of 18,000 fans. The King died less than two months later.

It has been 20 years since scientists announced the human genetic code was essentially deciphered. Proclaimed as a “historic point in the 100,000-year record of humanity”, the sequence unlocked the door for medical science and a hopeful future devoid of genetic disease, including cancers and diabetes. US President Bill Clinton, who announced the project’s success, called it “one of the most important, most wondrous maps ever produced by humankind”. Meanwhile, Dr Michael Dexter, the director of the Wellcome Trust, which funded the British part of the genome project, said at the time: “Mapping the human genome has been compared with putting a man on the moon, but I believe it is more than that.”

On July 26, 1284, the German city of Hamelin became the centre of one of history’s most well-known stories when 130 children mysteriously disappeared.

The reasons are obscured by legend, including that of the Pied Piper, who lured them away in revenge for not being paid for clearing the town of rats. It’s been determined parts of the story centre on fact, but no one has ever verified the entire tale. Among the most recent theories is that the town suffered a plague-like illness that resulted in the children’s deaths. The first mention of an incident was chronicled in 1384, with the words, “It is 100 years since our children left.”

business Winter holidays on the Sunshine Coast are shaping up to be a busy and fun affair. With the state government recently easing COVID-19 restrictions, more of the businesses and activities we love are back on the school holiday agenda.

Here are some great ways to keep the young, and young at heart, busy over the next two weeks.

Welcome back With international travel forbidden in the foreseeable future, the federal government is urging the nearly 10 million Australians who travelled overseas last year to look at their own backyards.

The more than $65 billion spent in foreign destinations would go a long way to helping domestic tourism operators reeling from the pandemic.

After enduring months of forced closure, some of the Sunshine Coast’s popular attractions are opening their doors in time for the June/July holidays.

Earlier this month, the Australian government fast-tracked easing of restrictions to allow more people into venues.

In Queensland as of July 10, the 100-person cap on indoor venues will be scrapped. Until then, venues must follow strict guidelines and adhere to a COVID-safe plan.

Up to 20 people, including adults and children, can be in one house at one time, as long as they are able to practise social distancing. You should be careful when visiting grandparents and other elderly relatives, or people with pre-existing health conditions that might put them at higher risk of serious illness if they were to get COVID-19.

CAN MY CHILD HAVE FRIENDS OVER? Your child is allowed to have friends over these school holidays and they can have sleepovers. The food-oriented Currimundi Lake Twilight Market is on the third Friday of the month between 4-8pm. DRIVEN TO CREATE From excelling in her Year 10 manual arts class to creating bespoke pieces for Hollywood A-listers, jewellery designer Vanessa Nock has always walked her own path. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

anessa Nock has never been a slave to the trends. In fact, she prefers to set them. The jeweller has collaborated on a $35,000 bikini and her earrings are in the home of some of Hollywood’s most loved A-listers, including Australia’s own Margot Robbie.

Born with an innate attention to detail and knowing that she was a creative, the allure of the Year 10 manual arts elective was too good an opportunity for her to pass up in high school.

Undeterred by the fact she was the only girl in the class, Ms Nock loved the freedom of creating with her hands and employed the skills she’d honed as the only female sibling with two brothers.

Her Bundaberg high school also offered a welding class, which Ms Nock didn’t hesitate to sign up for. She excelled, adding another skill to her impressive list at a young age. Comfortable ‘on the tools,’ she was once again the only young

woman in the class, but it ignited a passion for a lifelong career as a bespoke designer jeweller.

“Being strong in knowing what brought me my happiness and my joy meant I didn’t ever worry about judgement from others,” Ms Nock says. “I suppose I’m lucky in that respect.

“The senior school welding course really was my introduction, on a larger scale, to how you can solder metals together to create anything you can imagine. Moving that skill into jewellery meant just working in a more refined manner.”

Ms Nock completed a visual arts course, which taught her the fine arts of gold and silver smithing through a major in jewellery design in nearby Hervey Bay the year after school.

She then started an apprenticeship under Bill Proctor in Bundaberg, going on to work for some of the most prolific

After seven years honing her skills and experimenting with her unique style, she moved to the Sunshine Coast and worked with Underwood Jewellers for 13 years.

Ms Nock caused a splash when she decided to venture out on her own and forge a new path as the owner of Uniqueness Designer Jeweller just over a year ago.

Her first, and most unusual, piece was the result of a collaboration with Veve Swimwear’s Vanessa Bryce – a bikini that featured statement natural opals.

The stunning $35,000 masterpiece definitely turned heads and had the dual purpose of raising awareness for mental health.

“I was blown away when I met Vanessa,” Ms Nock says. “Not only did we share the same name and same birth month of October, which has opal as the birthstone, but she presented me with her vision and I instantly got it.

“There was so much meaning behind it and I’d never worked with fashion before so it was unusual and unique, so definitely up my alley.

“The bikini attracted so much attention, so we were pleased to see the awareness raised. It is still for sale and it would be awesome to see it find a home someday. Vanessa and I have even spoken

to add a bit of Hollywood glam to their wardrobe. This is Ms Nock’s only signature range, as her passion lies firmly with designing and crafting one-off pieces for her clients.

“People always ask me how I come up with my designs and I find inspiration in all things. It could be a window frame or a mirror that has an unusual shape. I am always drawn to unusual details,” she says.

Being a small business owner was never her dream, but Ms Nock says she is a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. “Jewellery is very personal. It takes a lot of trust in someone to achieve your expectations. I listen to what is desired and even if someone is not exactly sure, I can help find the answers within,” she says.

“Bringing someone’s dream to reality is a beautiful gift to share.”

Her latest innovation is the creation of Ring Reveals, where couples work with her on the design and creation of their partner’s wedding and engagement rings and then enjoy an intimate picnic together and reveal their rings to one another.

“It’s all about the experience and making it unforgettable for people. These memories stay with people forever and whenever you look at a piece of jewellery that has been specially made, you will be transported back to the moment when you first fell in love with it,” she says.

Each pair was made by hand with a different natural stone. Vanessa chose rose quartz, black onyx, citrine, chalcedony, agate, fluorite, blue howlite and black spinel.

Her Sunshine Swirls were sent to Los Angeles as part of an Oscar gifting box, curated by Twenty2Luxury Celebrity Gifting. The boxes were put together by Sunshine Coast businesswoman Janine Hall, who approached Ms Nock to contribute to the boxes, after they sat together at a workshop.

“Janine commented on my shoes then we got to talking. She was putting together the gift bags and asked me if I would be interested,” Ms Nock says.

“I am a little excited that my creations have made their way to Hollywood and I am looking forward to seeing if the actresses wear them out once they start attending events again.”

IRON ORE – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

I

n Ord Minnett’s view, the iron ore market is tighter than we had initially expected. This is based on solid Chinese steel output, lacklustre Brazilian exports and declining port stocks. We have raised our iron ore price forecasts by 11 per cent in 2020 to $US91 a tonne and 10 per cent in 2021 to $US80 a tonne, which has boosted our target prices for BHP Group (BHP), Rio Tinto (RIO) and Fortescue Metals Group (FMG).

On this basis, we remain positive on the iron ore miners, despite the strong run in share prices. We see more valuation support from a net present value (NPV) perspective in BHP and Rio Tinto than in Fortescue, although based on our estimates Fortescue should provide

higher free cash flow and dividend yields over the coming years.

Our Accumulate rating on all three miners is unchanged. In a forced ranking, we believe the two diversified majors are more attractive from a balance-of-risks perspective – that is, if iron ore is softer than we expect, there is strong valuation support. Fortescue has a higher risk-reward ratio should issues ramping up Brazilian exports continue, which could see markets remain strong through much of 2020. We have increased target prices for BHP to $40 from $38, Rio Tinto to $108 from $99 and Fortescue to $15.10 from $12.90.

Iron ore prices have risen more than 10 per cent in the year to date, and have pushed above $US100 a tonne. It appears the stars have aligned, with China demand strong, COVID-19-related Brazilian supply issues, low port inventories and only a marginal supply response. The China stimulus program was also larger than we expected. We assume that spot iron ore prices will be lower in the December half, although this is based on a recovery in Brazilian supply. Should the impact from COVID-19 last longer, there is a realistic proposition that prices will continue to trade higher.

BHP and Rio Tinto – We have a marginal preference for Rio Tinto over BHP. Rio Tinto’s greater iron ore leverage has seen it trade at a discount to BHP based on near-term earnings multiples. However, their price to NPV ratios (0.9x) and dividend yields (about three per cent based on a 50 per cent EPS payout ratio) are similar.

Overall, there isn’t much to separate the two from an investment perspective – both look appealing – but on a forced ranking Rio Tinto comes out in front.

Fortescue Metals – Fortescue’s spot earnings (EBITDA) is about 33 per cent above consensus and in our new price deck the stock yields seven per cent in FY21E (the peak capital expenditure year).

Overall, the material increase in our valuation to $15 per share reflects less conservative cost, capital expenditure and reserve life assumptions in the long term. Fortescue’s valuation metrics have a high sensitivity to iron ore prices, however, which continue to beat consensus estimates. The scenario of Brazilian exports remaining subdued continues to present potential upside for the stock.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) are partnering to deliver the M2M cycleway.

A separated cycleway will reduce the need for interaction between motorists and people riding bikes on roads and between active transport users and pedestrians on existing footpaths. The separation will improve safety, comfort and travel time for all users.

Initial consultation on the M2M cycleway project was held late last year. The feedback received has been used to inform the planning and develop a preferred option for Stage 6.

TMR is committed to genuine consultation and encourages all stakeholders and community members to have their say on the project. The preferred option will be open for feedback from Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020. TMR will consider the feedback received and use it to inform the final design.

TIME FOR A CHANGE

Sami Muirhead is pumped about her family plans to explore the Sunshine Coast these school holidays.

Tired of the negative feed and constant bad news, Candice Holznagel has switched off Facebook, and she’s discovered she’s not alone.

W

e are having a staycation these school holidays. To be honest it feels a little like ground hog day after the kids were home for a few months during corona. Except this time around we will actually leave the house and I will not stockpile loo paper. Yep, I admit I did that!

I never went anywhere as a kid except all over the neighbourhood on my BMX. I never expected any grand holidays or road trips. Although I must admit I have had a life-long obsession with Paris and have always wanted to run away to faraway lands, so perhaps my weekends and holidays spent with the local kids in our bike bandit group did impact me more than I realised.

I did not get on my first international flight until I was in my mid-twenties. This was a disaster as I took full advantage of the free grog and spilt red wine all over my cream cargo pants. Not a good look. The gorgeous flight staff took my pants away and somehow cleaned and dried them before I landed in Vancouver, but I spent the flight in my knickers wrapped in a blanket. I have told you before in this column: you can take the girl out of bogan, but you cannot take the bogan out of the girl.

So this holiday is all about seeing the wonder of our own backyard. Not my actual backyard, as it is filled with tiny bits of LEGO and rusty toy cars. No! We are

exploring the Coast and there is an eating theme as a bonus! We have already done the day trip to Kenilworth for the holidays.

We visited friends who were camping and we jumped with happiness in creeks and climbed trees that went up to the sky. We got dirty in a delightful way.

Then we sniffed out the famous Kenilworth Country Bakery. It is worth the wait, people. I recommend the creme brulee donut. In fact, I recommend two of them. We will also be day tripping to Noosa National Park where the locals are

We will hit Kings Beach and dip in the ocean pool (if we’re allowed to) before dining on fish and chips. And lastly, we will wind our family car up to the hinterland to feast on scones with jam and cream and old-school milkshakes. So happy staycation everyone.

We have so much to do in our own backyard, who needs to fly anywhere?

But when those airports re-open I do recommend keeping your pants on.

his week I switched off from Facebook. I have grown tired.

Tired of the lack of respect and tired of the barrage of negative comments on every news story within my feed.

“Scott Morrison is a disgrace.”

“Annastacia Palaszczuk is letting our state down.” “Brendan Murphy is a joke.” And so the comments – often lacking in clarity or factual evidence – go on.

And then we have the keyboard warriors who target those who are willing to share an educated, or dare I say, positive opinion.

I’m all for freedom of speech. As humans we’re entitled to equality, to share opinions and political views. These views can and will differ substantially – this is what makes us unique. Yet in many cases, acceptance or understanding has made way for targeted bullying and disrespect.

Of course, the content itself is also becoming tiresome and here in lies the problem. COVID-19 death tallies, stress-inducing fake news, violence.

I remember being told during my journalism studies at university, “if it bleeds, it leads”. For decades this has formed the hierarchy of news bulletins.

But the way in which we consume news has changed so much in the past decade. It is thrown at us from every possible medium and can be difficult to escape. As recent negative social media

activity has shown, it can be easy to get sucked down the rabbit hole and become all consumed with the doom and gloom.

We can’t help but feel a sense of negativity and exhaustion.

Is it time for real change?

Two weeks ago I shed a tear as news broke that autistic teenager Will Callaghan had been safely found after spending two nights lost in near-freezing Victorian bushland. The sense of relief and joy at hearing good news was overwhelming.

Until that moment I did not realise quite how much I had been craving it, and I wasn’t alone, with thousands of people expressing positive emotions online, echoing my thoughts: “We needed to feel something positive on a national scale.”

Now, a new survey has shown that many of us are starting to feel restless and resentful towards the negativity presented to us on a daily basis.

The COVID-19: Australian news and misinformation report from the University of Canberra shows that two-thirds of respondents are avoiding news about the coronavirus and 46 per cent say they find the current news coverage overwhelming.

Many crave a balance between issues of national importance, constructive reporting, critical thinking and community journalism. This is the vital balance needed from our major media industries. It is most definitely time for change.

here has been plenty of talk about the Australian Government’s building stimulus package, which has been welcomed with open arms by industry groups and renovators alike.

Under the $688 million HomeBuilder package, Australians looking to build or renovate in the second half of the year will be able to get $25,000 from the federal government as part of the scheme that aims to keep the construction industry moving.

It’s open to people earning less than $125,000 a year, or $200,000 per couple, and for new homes valued up to $750,000 including land, or for renovations worth between $150,000 and $750,000 that will result in the property being worth less than $1.5 million.

The money can’t be used on investment properties or to build things outside the house like swimming pools, tennis courts, outdoor spas and saunas, sheds or garages.

The government anticipates the package will support 140,000 direct construction jobs and a million workers in the wider residential building sector, including architects, material supplies and manufacturers, and engineers.

The package will be made available through state governments.

The construction sector has been warning it faced massive job losses once projects already under way tailed off, with people expected to cancel or delay new home builds amid the economic downturn. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the package will deliver a “tradie-led recovery”.

Trying to find the right builder for your renovation project? Here are some tips from Housing Industry Association Sunshine Coast.

• Construction must start within three months of the contract date.

1. Peace of mind still comes from asking the right questions. Before you hire a builder, ask about licenses, insurance and experience and make sure you are in agreement on a quote and create a detailed prepared time line that you can both agree on.

2. Checking a builder is qualified usually means checking that the builder holds a residential building license and relevant insurances. You can also check if the builder is a member of an industry association, like the Housing Industry

This can lead to potential issues regarding the build price. Materials selection can have a huge overall influence on the cost of building. You may be able to get a bathroom tap for $15 or you can get the architecturally designed feature tap for $2000 to $3000. Some builders, though, may prefer to wait to give a quote once the detailed specification on finishes can be provided with the approved plans and permits.

Q) What are your golden rules for staying safe during a DIY build or reno?

• Always wear protective gear – good boots, longsleeved shirt, hard hat gloves, goggles etc.

Make sure you are properly trained in the use of your power tools, especially nail guns, chain saws and welders.

• Make sure you know where any electrical lines or pipes are before you start any major demolition or work on your house and always have a medical kit handy.

• When doing any high ladder work, make sure you have someone with you in case you fall or the ladder slips.

• All gas and electrical work needs to be carried out by a certified professional.

There will be times when the gas or electricity supply will need to be turned off to ensure a safe working environment, so check your electrical safety switches are in working order.

Q&A For those about to launch into a home renovation project, there is a lot to consider. We speak with Housing Industry Association Sunshine Coast’s regional manager Ken Smith about what you need to know.

Q) Which jobs do you advise against doing yourself? When should you call in the professionals?

Unless you are a registered tradie or builder such as a plumber, electrician, large-scale roofer or welder, then it’s not advisable to do your own work. Any major structural work should be looked over and performed by a qualified engineer or builder. By doing the work yourself you could not only put your house in

jeopardy, but also the safety and wellbeing of those who dwell in the house. Also any specialist removal such as asbestos or lead paint should be done by an expert.

Shoddy renovations can result in legal ramifications so it’s best leaving certain jobs up to the professionals rather than doing it by trial and error.

• Clean up materials and put away tools as you go. Always disconnect power tools when not in use.

• Contain waste, fumes and dust residue as well as you can by sealing off parts of the house you’re not renovating and covering the floor with plastic sheets. Pregnant women and children should keep away from the work site, and neighbours should seal their windows and doors where possible. Eat away from the renovation site, and always wash your hands and face before consuming food.

• Ensure your work space is properly ventilated as fumes and dust can cause illness.

• Homes built before 1970 may contain lead paint. Lead paint is not a threat unless disturbed, so sanding or scraping old lead paint can be dangerous as it scatters the toxic residue. It is possible to test for the presence of lead paint, and there are safe

removal methods, including chemical stripping, wet sanding and containing the paint waste. In most cases, lead paint needs to be removed by a professional who is experienced in the area.

• Houses built before 1990 should be checked for asbestos as it was a popular material for insulation. If disturbed it can be dangerous. A professional needs to first ascertain if you have asbestos and secondly remove it safely. Also, fibro houses – which are essentially asbestos – should be demolished with the help of an expert as the dust in the air is dangerous.

I want to paint my house and would love to hear your opinion on colours to freshen its current look. There are elements of grey tiling, there’s a pillar (obscured by a palm tree) near the entrance of the house, then elements of it on our fence. I’m hoping for ideas to complement the existing style. CASSANDRA SAYS Thanks for your question. Your home is actually quite nice as is, but I understand that sometimes home owners like a change or update. The base colour palette is still on trend for a contemporary home, so my design advice would be to stick with the colour palette and add some design elements to

breathe a little new life into the design.

Some feature timber or timber-look vertical battens placed strategically on the facade would bring in a new design element and update the style. This could also be repeated on some of the front fence. A bay of lush planting in front of the fence would lift the frontage and add to the street appeal.

Choosing the right rug SIZE – To help determine the right-sized rug for your space, first measure the area.

It’s best to have furniture approximately 15 centimetres in from the edge of the rug.

STEPS PATHWAYS COLLEGE HAS BIG PLANS FOR EXPANSION STEPS Pathways College teaches the skills of independent living to young adults living with disability and is expanding to meet current demands for its Australian-first learning model.

The Caloundra boarding college welcomes students from all over Australia, and operates a day program and new online learning program to engage regional Australians.

The idea for the college was simple. It came from a place that all parents of children with disabilities experience – what’s going to happen to my child when I’m not here?

STEPS Group managing director Carmel Crouch, whose 48-year-old son with a disability is still living at home, says for her, this perspective has always been her driving force.

“This idea of the college comes very much from my personal point of view. I thought there had to be some way we could make opportunities for young people with disabilities to become independent,” Ms Crouch says “Now the college has been up and running successfully for three years, expansion is the way forward for us.

“We’re excited to announce we will have a new expansion built by November this year.”

The College’s day program provides flexible learning five days a week, and the opportunity to experience campus life for students still living at home.

A GUIDING LIGHT IN DARK TIMES Many years ago I found myself in a treacherous situation. I was travelling at night in my old 1972 Volkswagen Beetle down a narrow, rural, mountainous road. I was approximately halfway into my journey when a storm broke loose and the dark night was disrupted by fierce pelting rain. I had known that the headlights on my car were quite poor, but it wasn’t until this moment that I realised I could barely see where I was going. It was too late to turn back and too dark to go on. I had no choice but to somehow keep moving forward as I made my way down a perilous, windy road on a dark, rainy night.

Soon I started to panic, cry and pray as I felt certain I was heading to

a dreadful death plunging down a steep ravine. I was on a dark journey with hardly any light.

Then, like a vision or a dream, a car came up behind me with its headlights on bright. It was vivid, clear and strong enough to illuminate the dark, and most importantly, the path ahead of me. I could finally see where I was going and safely made my way home.

The therapeutic process can be similar. Sometimes we find ourselves on the journey of life, not quite sure where we are going, struggling in the dark.

More often than we realise or acknowledge, we need someone else to come up behind us and help to light the way. Often, a conversation with a therapist can shed light on those matters troubling us, those concerns which don’t make sense, or those rambling thoughts which just won’t go away. SWITCHING OFF A SUCCESS AT CALOUNDRA CITY PRIVATE SCHOOL Recently, Caloundra City Private School’s (CCPS) head of students, Dr Peter McMahon, was talking with one the students about returning to school after home learning. The student said, “School is hard, Mr Mac. “Well, not the academic stuff, though that has its moments. Rather, the belonging and keeping up with what everyone is and isn’t doing. I want to be me, not what some magazine or group is telling me what I should be.”

When used correctly, social media is an

excellent avenue to connect young people.

Used unwisely or negatively, it can be highly destructive with the ripples affecting all aspects of the child’s schooling.

Social media has really coined young people ‘the connected generation’. For CCPS children, though, this has come at a very obvious cost to educators and parents.

“Kids have disconnected from sport, some aspects of family life, social outings and nature,” Dr McMahon says.

The school is looking very closely at the research of Associate Professor Michael

Nagel and this team at the University of the Sunshine Coast into the social, emotional and brain development of adolescent youth as their screen time explodes.

Based on Assoc Prof Nagel’s research, CCPS has introduced a number of initiatives to assist young people handle their screen time. ‘Turn It Off at the Gate’ is a student-led action, where the students have been encouraged to turn off their mobile phones when they enter the school grounds.

Parents and staff act as role models for the students, and in general, it has been an outstanding success.

Wow, how good was last Sunday!

Sadly, everyone was out and at Currimundi, as an example, it was impossible to find a car park. But waves were on tap.

This Sunday is looking good too, but get in early.

Those lucky enough to be stranded in Sumatra are scoring heaps of epic uncrowded waves, but with high rewards comes high risk and it certainly appears COVID is not going away over there anytime soon.

If anything I would suggest it is about to take off.
