From the editor Earlier this month, my young child became ill. He had returned to school, as advised by the government, and within a week contracted a cold.

He had no fevers, but developed a runny nose and cough. In regular circumstances, we would have monitored him at home for a few days and encouraged rest and fluids.

But these are not ‘normal’ times. Given his symptoms, we were unable to visit the GP and were referred to a testing and fever clinic. We prepped him as best we could.

Having a stranger dressed in protective gear insert a swab up your nose is daunting.

Upon arrival, he sat in the car reading the COVID-19 warning signs out loud. And then the tears started. After consultation with

three medical staff, we were advised to forgo the invasive test and isolate. In his place, I was tested. It was negative, yet we kept our son home for 11 days until all symptoms subsided. It occurred to me that it’s going to be a long winter.

For many parents, the question remains: what is the best course of action if our young ones come down with a sniffle? This is the question we took to the state and federal governments this week. You can read the story on page 10.

PM’S HIGH-WIRE ACT ON VIRUS MEASURES As JobKeeper and other economic safety nets come to an end in the coming months, Australians without jobs face a tough future, and the government faces mounting pressure. WORDS: Matt Coughlan, AAP.

cott Morrison’s path emerging from the coronavirus crisis is a tightrope act balancing millions of lives coming out of economic wreckage.

While the JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme dominated politicians’ return to Canberra last week, the boosted and renamed JobSeeker payment was the elephant in the room.

There are 1.6 million people on the unemployment allowance of about $1100 a fortnight, now double the rate before the pandemic. While the wage subsidy scheme

is helping about three million fewer than first predicted, there are still 3.3 million people surviving on $1500 fortnightly JobKeeper payments.

The new and improved safety nets are slated to end in September. The almost five million Australians being supported through those two programs represent about a third of people enrolled to vote.

Scott Morrison faces a Goldilocks moment in the coming months. Weaning the country off support too quickly carries great risk, but the government has always

insisted the changes are temporary.

Where the government lands is a delicate economic and political high-wire act affecting millions of Australians.

With a predicted unemployment rate of eight per cent during a recession, cutting too many people adrift too quickly could sap the political capital earned through the crisis navigation.

Tony Abbott warned of the political consequences of withdrawing personal benefits in April. The former prime minister said it was especially hard when recipients could rightly claim government policy – life-saving shutdown measures – threw them out of work.

‘The best form of welfare is a job’ mantra gets harder to sell when opportunities become scarce. Especially when the coalition’s aspirational voters find themselves in dole queues despite the economy reopening. Many will return to jobs, but many won’t.

Labor refuses to put a dollar amount on a JobSeeker rise, other than to say the old rate of $40 a day is too low. The Greens – unshackled by the prospect of governing or budgets – say at least $1012 a fortnight is needed to keep people out of poverty.

While debate burns across traditional battle lines, embers are emerging within the coalition.

North Queensland veteran and Liberal Warren Entsch wants wage subsidies extended in regional tourism centres like Cairns.

New South Wales Nationals MP Pat Conaghan has argued for the doubled dole to continue well beyond the six-month expiry and a longer-term permanent hike in the order of $75 to $95 a week.

Sydney-based Liberal Jason Falinski is a vocal advocate for ending the spending as soon as possible. He declared the full return of students to classrooms was the right

time to talk about phasing out the income and welfare support schemes.

A powerful international economic partnership has joined the call for income support to be extended beyond September.

The OECD says further stimulus including social housing may need to be looked at.

Meanwhile, the government’s rhetorical ebb and flow on JobKeeper risks causing whiplash. Earlier this month, the Prime Minister gave a guarantee the program would continue until its legislated cut-off in September. Three days later, Education Minister Dan Tehan announced childcare workers would be shifted to a transitional payment from July 20.

The next day Finance Minister Mathias Cormann fronted the Labor-chaired coronavirus response inquiry. He argued the program’s existence for the full six months justified Mr Morrison’s guarantee.

Childcare was being excluded in favour of more fair and equitable measures agreed to after representations from the sector, the senior lieutenant said. “The prime minister’s statement was and remains 100 per cent accurate,” Mr Cormann said.

Labor argues 120,000 childcare workers will miss out despite the guarantee.

Morrison’s language also evolved through the parliamentary week. He raised the prospects of Treasury’s review prompting changes to JobKeeper in July, before declaring a day later payments will remain in place for everyone except childcare staff. “This is a very special case. JobKeeper is there till the end of September,” the Prime Minister said.

The door for tinkering is wide open, even if whole sectors aren’t booted off without a parachute.

Reductions, recalibration and replacement now shape as more likely options. The road out looks much harder than the road in.

Sunday marked a momentous occasion at the Sunshine Coast Airport as the new multi-milliondollar runway welcomed its first plane. The region’s aviation sector has come a long way. The first aircraft to land at Maroochydore, on February 1, 1922, was an Avro 504K, rego G-AUDA, owned by the Aeroflight Aviation Company, Bulimba. In 1928 a site was selected for an aerodrome near Maroochydore Beach. The land was cleared and a landing strip marked out. It is not known when the last plane landed at the aerodrome. However, a Nambour Chronicle article in November 1937 advised that after an inspection of the Maroochydore Aerodrome, it would cost £2000 to improve the runway for modern aircraft. And so, the search for a new airport site began. In 1954, a site for a future airport was proposed and on Friday, August 14, 1959, Roy Kassulke was the very first pilot to land an aircraft on the newly constructed airstrip. On August 12, 1961 Senator Shane Paltridge, Federal Minister for Civil Aviation, officially opened the Maroochy Airport in front of a huge crowd.

Clearing up the COVID confusion During the coronavirus pandemic, many Australians have found it a challenge to keep themselves and their families safe, both physically and mentally. Parents also have a tough job managing anxiety in their children. But they are not alone, and there are people who can help. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

OVID-19 has changed the way many of us conduct our daily lives. But as restrictions ease, our vigilance mustn’t, especially when it comes to our children.

According to health and government authorities, schools are now considered a safe place for students and present a low risk in relation to the spread of the virus.

“Queensland’s Chief Health Officer and Children’s Health Queensland recommends all families to follow the government advice about children returning to school, unless a child has a chronic or complex health condition and have been advised by a specialist that they should remain at home,” a Queensland Health spokesperson says.

However, with winter upon us and the seasonal cough and cold season kicking off, what do parents need to know about sending children to school?

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK? Parents are advised to keep children at home if they have a cold or infection, but some families are confused about how long they have to do so. After all, those sniffles and coughs can hang around for weeks. How much school can our children miss? What is the right balance?

The Australian Department of Health’s advice is to isolate children who are showing any symptoms – such as a fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath.

A COVID-19 test may be required.

“The main message for parents is that if their child is sick, they must not go to school,” a spokesperson tells My Weekly Preview. “They need to self-isolate and be assessed by a medical professional, who will take all factors into account. If they have been tested for COVID-19 they should not attend school until results have been received.

“If a child tests positive for COVID-19, the health authorities will provide advice

“If a child needs to stay home, either because they are in isolation or in quarantine, but they are well enough to study, parents should contact their child’s school for advice about learning from home.”

The spokesperson says it is possible children will need to undergo more than one test this winter season.

“Further tests may be required if a test

“While testing is essential to maintain the level of success that has been achieved, parents can reassure children that, while it is important to have the test, it is most likely currently to be negative for COVID-19.”

University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer in psychology Dr Rachael Sharman says parents can help kids to

reduce the risk of spreading germs with simple queues.

“Children respond really well to visual reminders – you could put pictures on the back of your toilet door reminding children to wash their hands.

“Also hand sanitisers are now coming in various forms of handy clip-on and novelty varieties. Make it fun and creative; have the child clip their sanitiser to their clothes and remind them to use before eating and so on.”

And if a child does need a test, there are a few ways to prepare them for the nose and throat swab.

“You can help the child by allowing them to feel a swab, so they know what texture to expect, or watch a YouTube video of the test, especially the older children,” Dr Sharman says.

Some kids might have heightened anxiety if they’ve had a bad experience before or have difficulty understanding the need for the test.

“Usually the parents of that child, or a skilled paediatric nurse/doctor will have some tricks up their sleeve to best calm individual children,” she adds.

“A one-off [test] is unlikely to have long-lasting adverse effects psychologically – just as vaccines are routinely tolerated by most.”

It says specific measures will continue to be in place including physical distancing of 1.5 metres for adults; adults must not gather in or around school grounds, car parks, school gates and outside classrooms; and parents should use stop, drop and go or similar facilities rather than walking their children into school.

Students must also engage in regular effective hygiene protocols. Increased cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as light switches and door handles will continue, and technology such as video conferencing will be used for gatherings, meetings and assemblies.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT YOUR CHILD? COVID-19 has disrupted many aspects of life and for children, this can affect them in many ways. Education Queensland’s Primary students’ return to school: Advice for parents and carers report says children may still feel a range of emotions during these times.

You may notice changes in your child’s behaviour, sleep, mood, interactions with others, or eating habits – these are all normal expressions of worry and by noticing and responding with care, you will help your child. The key is to identify signs of increased anxiety, stress or worry and help children feel safe and supported.

Having a clear school routine in place may also help – set regular times for waking up, for eating breakfast and heading to school.

Dr Sharman says providing additional and safe opportunities for children to socialise, even if it’s done remotely, can positively benefit nervous students.

“If the child is well enough to do so, remaining in contact with their teachers and school friends via whatever online platform is most practical retains an important connection to their work and social networks,’’ she says.

STAYING COVID-19 SAFE Be sure to follow health advice from the government. If you have any concerns or questions you can phone 13 HEALTH – 13 43 25 84.

Make your GP your first point of contact for advice and any required medical assessment.

Ensure that you keep your kids interacting with other kids while maintaining social distancing when possible.

Stay connected with your child’s school and use online tools and learning platforms if required.

Practise safe hygiene measures as a family – covering your mouth when coughing, washing your hands often – before and after eating and after going to the bathroom. Use antibacterial wipes and/or alcohol-based hand sanitisers when you can’t use soap and warm water.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible, especially when in public.

STUDY TO RESEARCH HOW KIDS ARE COPING Australian parents may have struggled through weeks of confinement, but the effect of lockdown in their little ones is yet to be revealed.

To build a picture of how children aged one to five and their families are coping with recent traumatic events, parents have been asked to join a national study.

AAP reports that University of Melbourne research fellow Dr Mira Vasileva says this age group is often neglected because people don’t think they can understand what is happening in the world.

“But they are also affected by the behaviour of their parents, who might be stressed by working at home or being in financial trouble,” Dr Vasileva says.

Collaborative research between several Australian universities, called COVID-19 Unmasked, will seek to understand how families are coping. The main focus will be on learning how the pandemic could impact the children’s development and what mental health issues could arise. Parents have until June 30 to take part in the survey.

Meanwhile, Sunshine Coast educational and developmental psychologist Lisa Good of Bear in Mind Psychology says she was pleasantly surprised with how well children have coped during the past few months.

“I expected more anxiety, more concerns, and more depressed moods but in reality I saw more family time and a slower paced lifestyle that I think a lot of people appreciated,’’ she says.

“Don’t get me wrong, families were presenting as concerned about the risk of COVID-19 and there certainly were some devastating impacts, however, the majority of families appeared to adjust and work around it quicker than I was expecting.”

She suggests it may be helpful to ensure the conversations at home don’t focus too much on the pandemic. If you notice signs that your child might not be coping, speak with your GP. “It is also important to ensure that the dialogue in the household is not focused on COVID-19 statistics and updates and children are not being exposed to media outlets and announcements that are not directed at their developmental age and stage. I think it is important that parents watch for any changes in their children during this time and create an open space for them to voice any concerns they might have,” she adds.

“It would be unreasonable for us to expect all children and adolescents to bounce back into their normal routines without a little fear or anxiety. However, if parents are noticing that their children are really struggling to adjust… it is really important to visit their local GP and seek a referral.”

HOLIDAY PARKS ARE NOW OPEN N Sunshine Coast st Council and VSC have asked the Queensland Premier to allocate $1 million in funding for an intensive marketing campaign to attract visitors to the Coast over the winter period.

The call comes after the state government provided $2.4 million each to the Tropical North Queensland and Gold Coast regional tourism organisations.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the additional funds provided to each of those organisations means they can now actively compete against the Sunshine Coast for intrastate visitors, a market that has traditionally been a major source for our region.

“We understand that this is a competitive business, but as the Sunshine Coast tourism industry is attempting to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, what our region should not have to contend with is competitors whose marketing efforts have been significantly financed by the Queensland government – our own state government.”

As the region’s holiday parks rolled out the welcome mat last week, Sunshine Coast Council, with Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC), urged residents to enjoy a staycation.

VSC chairperson David Ryan says as Queensland borders are still closed, the region faces losing out on strong trade from the southern states and New Zealand. “The indications are the majority of Sunshine Coast tourism businesses will lose between 90 per cent and 100 per cent of their revenues for the March quarter and even with intrastate restrictions relaxed from June 1, revenues for the June-September quarter are estimated to be less than 30 per cent of normal revenues.”

ANSWERING THE CALL Prison chaplain Jonathan Stubbs has found his calling working with men in prison, where he’s using his own experiences to guide and uplift others. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

N

ot many people would feel at home mingling with convicted criminals, but Jonathan Stubbs openly admits he has a sense of connection to many of the men incarcerated in Woodford Correctional Centre.

The Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy volunteer has been visiting the prison for the past six years. He says during his “very rebellious” teenage years he was heavily into drugs and alcohol and he ended up in the watchhouse on more than one occasion.

“I acquired a criminal record from my use of drugs back in my youth, so I’m not squeaky clean and I could have easily ended up in jail myself had it not been for the grace of God,” he says.

The 52-year-old Battery Hill resident says being open and honest about his past has “removed a couple of bricks from the wall” of prisoners who do not feel

comfortable seeking support from fellow chaplains or staff who frequent the jail.

Growing up in a loving Christian home, Mr Stubbs says he was able to rediscover his strong foundations and values instilled in him by his parents to find a way out of the dark pit of drugs and alcohol and back to his faith at the age of 25.

Living a party lifestyle for many years, Mr Stubbs says he and his girlfriend, now his loving wife, decided to travel overseas in a bid to see the world and learn and grow.

“When we came home, we realised everything was still the same, our relationship wasn’t changing, we were trying to escape what we were doing rather then face it head-on,” he says.

“We decided we’d never tried God and having been brought up in a Christian home, I knew when you make a decision for Jesus, it’s for life. We did that together

“However, it wasn’t until that moment that I realised I was an addict.”

Mr Stubbs’s father George was a prison chaplain for 25 years, including 20 years with Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy, which is run by Queensland not-for-profit Carinity. It was his father’s and mother’s life of service that inspired Mr Stubbs to work in jails.

“My father rang me one day to mention he had met a young man in jail whose mother went to our church, so I started visiting him,” Mr Stubbs says.

“Over the next two years, we built up a good relationship and I really saw the significance of walking alongside someone who’s incarcerated, and that process has stayed with me.”

After losing part of his right arm in a motorbike accident at the age of 35, Mr Stubbs made it through recovery and found he was able to dedicate more of his time to the work he had been called to do. He volunteered at Risdon Prison in Hobart, where he connected with prisoners under the tutelage of a qualified chaplain for about four years.

When he moved to the Sunshine Coast, Mr Stubbs connected with Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy and started visiting the Woodford Correctional Centre. He recently became the first

Sunshine Coast resident to graduate from a Queensland-first pastoral care course by completing Carinity’s Certificate IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care.

Mr Stubbs leaves home at 7am every Thursday to get to the jail around 8am and go through security protocols to reach the office. He has a cup of coffee and sees if any inmates have booked in to see him that day before heading into the units around 8.30am.

“The world looks at the outside, but God looks at the inside, which reveals the real person” Chaplains are the only people who are able to walk through the jail without an escort. They have access to the medical and detention units and can move about freely within the jail, outside ‘muster’ times, where inmates are counted and locked into their cells at various times of the day. Mr Stubbs heads home again around 3pm.

The remaining 10 per cent are requested meetings.

Mr Stubbs says the prisoners feel respected and valued when he gives them his time, something he says can make a huge difference in their lives. He says the biggest lesson he has learned over the past 10 years of working with prisoners is how to ‘listen’. “There is a common saying that criminals should be locked up and throw away the key and while I agree with the first part, I have quickly realised they are normal people just like you and me,” he says.

“They talk about their families, their loved ones, and many of them express feelings that they are not worthy of forgiveness especially by God. This is an open door for me to share my story and tell them that the world looks at the outside, but God looks at the inside, which reveals the real person and that’s who God wants to get to know.”

Mr Stubbs is one of around 30 Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy volunteer prison chaplains offering pastoral care to men and women in correctional centres between Cairns and the Gold Coast.

“It’s a young man’s jail today because of the ice epidemic. That’s not to say they are all addicts, but there are dealers,

traffickers or they’ve committed crimes that are somehow related to ice,” he says.

“This has become more prominent as the years have gone on. Overpopulation of jails has also become an issue and there’s no easy solution – it is what it is.

Woodford Correctional Centre was built to house just under 1000 men and it now holds over 1400 men. When you’re used to having your own cell and then have to share one, the dynamics change, and when you add a lot of testosterone there can at times be problems.”

Mr Stubbs says although he has witnessed a number of fights among inmates, he has never been threatened or felt unsafe while carrying out his work.

In fact, there is an unspoken mutual respect there.

“What I want people to understand is that prison chaplains are important because we have privileged access to broken lives that matter and the same hope in Jesus Christ that we have is the same hope that inmates and all people can have,” he says.

The Bible says in Hebrews 13:3 to “remember those in prison…” so with a firm goal to “beating Dad’s record”, Mr Stubbs says he is committed to continuing his chaplaincy work for as long as he is physically able and called

by God.

CARAMEL SLICE Reader Kelly shares her grandma’s caramel slice recipe and says she is sure everyone will enjoy the sweet treat as much as she does.

INGREDIENTS • 1 packet Arnott’s Milk Coffee biscuits • 1 tin condensed milk • 90g brown sugar • 90g butter • 1 tbsp of golden syrup • 90g Copha • 1 block cooking chocolate (either milk or dark chocolate)

METHOD Line a slice tray with the Milk Coffee biscuits.

Put the condensed milk, brown sugar, butter and golden syrup in a saucepan and cook over a low heat, continuing to stir until boiled. To this mixture add 12 Milk Coffee biscuits, which have been ground finely in a blender. Pour this over the biscuit base in the slice tray.

To make the chocolate topping, put the Copha and chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and melt and mix together, then pour this over the caramel mixture. Place in the fridge and allow to cool and become firm before eating.

Put one cup of the cooked mixture into the bottom of a large lasagne pan (we have a couple of cheap glass ones from Big W), then a layer of lasagne sheets (we cut ours to fit), then more meat, topped with mozzarella, then dobs of ricotta, then a sprinkle of parmesan. Add another layer of the same, then the same again. We made one large pan and one small one (using a small casserole dish). Cover with greased foil so it does not stick and bake at 200°C for 50 to 60 minutes.

Let it stand five minutes to cool a bit and cut into big squares and serve. This is a good winter warmer and any leftover sauce can be used for spaghetti bolognese, tacos or pizza topping.

CONSUMERS GET OVER THEIR VIRUS TRAUMA While the economy has taken a huge hit, there are some pleasing signs of confidence returning. WORDS: Colin Brinsden, AAP.

t’s not just the boffins at Treasury who are more confident about the economic outlook. Consumers too are happier about their lot than they were just a couple months ago when they were expecting the worst from the coronavirus pandemic.

The monthly Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index jumped 6.3 per cent in June, and has now recovered all of the 20 per cent loss seen when the pandemic hit in March/April.

Westpac chief economist Bill Evans thinks the rebound is remarkable.

“Confidence has clearly been buoyed

by Australia’s continued success in bringing the coronavirus under control, which has in turn allowed for a further easing in social restrictions over the last month,” he says.

However, he says with the unemployment rate set to remain elevated, extensive restrictions staying in place and the economy facing permanent structural change it would be surprising if the recent upward momentum continues.

That was the case with the weekly ANZ-Morgan consumer confidence index, which dropped 1.3 per cent, ending a nine-week recovery.

“Last week’s fall in confidence can be seen as more of a consolidating move than weakness, as it has come after the most extended stretch of gains in the history of the weekly survey,” ANZ head of Australian economics David Plank says.

The weekly gauge showed views on economic and financial conditions were

little changed. “A pleasing result given the news that Australia is almost certainly in a technical recession,” he says.

Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy recently told a Senate committee the economic hit from the coronavirus would be smaller than initially expected because the health outlook has improved.

However, he said it would still be the “single biggest economic shock” Australia has faced in living memory.

Economists at National Australia Bank expect the economy will shrink by a hefty 8.5 per cent in the June quarter, after the relatively modest 0.3 per cent contraction in the previous three months.

Meanwhile, the federal government is moving to ease the burden of paying tax instalments. The change will affect instalments for an estimated 2.2 million taxpayers paying Pay As You Go income tax instalments and around 81,000 taxpayers paying GST instalments in the next financial year.

Stamp duty could soon be on its way out as the government grapples with the post-COVID economy, reports Finder, Australia’s most visited comparison site.

In this month’s Finder RBA Cash Rate Survey 43 experts and economists weighed in on future cash rate moves and other issues related to the state of the Australian economy.

While all experts surveyed expect a cash rate hold in June, more than two-thirds who weighed in on stamp duty predict it will be axed within the next 18 months, with most expecting the change in 2021.

Policymakers have been calling for an overhaul of taxes to help boost the post-COVID economy, with stamp duty emerging as the most ripe for reform.

Finder insights manager Graham Cooke says stamp duty heavily penalises families who are required to move regularly for work, as well as those who are trying to get on the property ladder.

“Not only do borrowers have to save a 20 per cent deposit, they also need to save well over $10,000 – in some cases more than $80,000 – for a tax that generally cannot be included in your mortgage. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has warned a second wave of coronavirus could cost the Australian economy $80 billion over the next two years.

His calculation came as global share markets erupted into a sea of selling on fears of a pandemic resurgence, killing off optimism for a quick recovery.

The Sunshine Coast’s new Community Strategy Leadership Group is on track to help guide the implementation of the Sunshine Coast Community Strategy 2019-2041, released late last year.

The group, consisting of representatives from organisations including Coast2Bay, Integrated Family and Youth Services, the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Thompson Institute, met earlier this month to begin formulating a work plan to affect positive change in the community, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says.

“We know we have an important role to play in supporting a connected, active and engaged community, but only a collaborative approach will enable us to achieve the outcomes that our residents wish to see realised,” he says.

Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says the group will aim to meet monthly to ensure the Community Strategy Action Plan is implemented as scheduled. “The Community Strategy Action Plan outlines our key priorities in order to build capacity in our communities to be connected, resilient and to respond to local issues, plus empowering our residents to live healthy and active lifestyles,” he says.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

After reading Julie Baird’s new book, Sami Muirhead is inspired to find joy in even the simplest of things.

Sandy Zubrinich is heartened by the response from all levels of government to steer our region through this economic crisis.

E

very so often you find a book that is a treasure. I am currently gorging myself on Julia Baird’s Phosphorescence.

In the mum’s own words, it is a book on “awe, wonder and things that sustain you when the world goes dark”. It is a book about trying to find contentment in life and cherishing the things that matter most. Isn’t that an interesting concept?

What sustains you? I know silence in my home nourishes me. Just being in my home watering my plants and changing the tablecloth and generally doing all the pretty things fills up my bucket and makes me feel calmer. Obviously, time with my little kids sustains me. Watching them sleep never fails to stop me in my tracks.

My dogs give me unlimited amounts of joy every single day. For free. Willingly.

Dogs love with such joyful abandon. They are reckless who they pour their love over and I adore this about them. I still laugh out loud daily when my posse of pups dig big holes at the beach and then proudly all pile into the one hole and look to me as if to say, “look what we built, Mum”.

Flowers also bring me pure joy. My close friendships are the same. A good hot cup of peppermint tea is a big tick in my book. The only thing that can make that cup of tea better is a bowl of soup with it in bed with fresh linen sheets.

But back to Julia Baird and her stunning book. It is not just another

self-help handbook. It is a search for light.

Phosphorescence is a process in which energy is absorbed by something (an earth worm or a fire fly for example) and then released slowly in the form of a light.

The ABC TV host has a gift with words and takes you down a delightful rabbit hole where we see the way she looks at the world with wonder and awe.

Heading to nature is a big part of the book and last weekend I took my kids for a walk in Noosa National Park on my quest for awe. Those towering native trees that

My kids did not think so and wanted to know when we would get ice-cream/when the walk would end/why were so many people running in the forest who had forgotten their shirts.

But this book has made me prioritise finding awe in our daily lives. The gift to be able to see flashes of joy during difficult times is one worth chasing. May you find little windows of awe and slivers of light in your daily life.

hile the COVID-19 health crisis is largely deemed under control, the extent of the economic crisis that has crippled some industries in our region is only just becoming evident.

Government support has been essential in assisting those treading water as they wait for restrictions to ease and – in particular tourism and hospitality – the essential re-opening of our borders.

The real challenge will only be understood as JobKeeper and other stimulus initiatives start being phased out.

This is when the true economic impact of this pandemic will reveal itself.

So, how do we as a region work collaboratively through short- and long-term challenges in order to reboot our local economy as swiftly as possible?

As the leading regional business advocacy group on the Sunshine Coast representing about 4000 businesses, the Sunshine Coast Business Council has taken a leaf from the Prime Minister’s book in establishing a regional cabinet.

I have been delighted at the willingness of our local political and industry leaders to work as a united front – we put out the call to arms and the response clearly demonstrates the level of commitment to working collaboratively.

Our ‘cabinet’ includes three tiers of government with Ted O’Brien and Andrew Wallace providing federal oversight, and

Jarrod Bleijie, Andrew Powell, Fiona Simpson and Sandy Bolton representing state government. Our local councils are represented by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart and her deputy councillor Frank Wilkie.

Sunshine Coast Council has nominated acting CEO Warren Bunker and Craig Matheson. While RDA Sunshine Coast is represented by Carol Cashman.

We also identified the key industries and sectors that will play an important part in our regional recovery including aviation, SMEs including tourism, education, food and agribusiness and the property and building industries, and appointed relevant representatives.

Our primary focus is to retain and create jobs. To this end, our priorities include continuing the call for our borders to re-open to stimulate tourism and hospitality and support small businesses; keeping major infrastructure projects moving; building investor and business confidence to create the jobs needed to get the region back to work; and building consumer confidence in the region, thereby stimulating spend to support the re-opening of businesses.

Kickstarting our regional economy will require endurance over an extended period of time. Given the calibre of leaders in the room and a genuine shared commitment to keeping people in jobs, I look forward to sharing our outcomes in the months ahead.

The road to recovery after knee surgery I perform hundreds of knee-replacement surgeries every year, so I see firsthand just how important it is for people to take the right steps to recover.

The first tip to rehab after kneereplacement surgery is to use an ice compress. This method is crucial to reduce swelling and pain, which will ultimately increase knee movement.

In my practice, we lend patients an ice machine following their surgery for this reason.

Secondly, let your body recover and don’t overdo physiotherapy. Prescribed exercises should be done in short duration with more repetitions. Most people want to get back to ‘normal’ as quickly as possible, but when they push themselves too hard, it can have the opposite effect.

Of course, exercise is still paramount, so taking regular, short walks (properly social distanced) is one of the best ways to help your body return to proper function.

POST-PANDEMIC PROPERTY PREDICTIONS Sunshine Coast property investors can take heart from a new report, which shows how the region is coping with the COVID-19 fallout.

D

emand for premium property investments remains strong on the Sunshine Coast, despite the economic effects of COVID-19. However, lower rentals, higher vacancy levels and falling capital values are likely to affect commercial property investors – particularly those who own retail properties.

These are the key findings from a new CBRE market update.

CBRE Sunshine Coast managing director Rem Rafter says the region’s economy was one of the strongest in Australia before the pandemic, and the massive stimulus packages offered by governments and banks, coupled with historic low interest rates, will soften its affects. He adds there is a low supply of quality investment opportunities on the Sunshine Coast, and that recent sales in the residential market – despite restrictions on auctions and inspections – indicates little, if any, setback in prices. But he warns tougher times are coming.

“The short- to medium-term effects will be driven by higher unemployment, weaker business revenue and profits,

higher vacancy and general caution in the market,” Mr Rafter says.

But he says as a result of the staged easing of restrictions, business will slowly rebuild and more people will return to work, boosting confidence across all markets. “There is so much private capital in the market that is starved of a return,” Mr Rafter says. “This will start flowing back as the economy recovers.”

CBRE Sunshine Coast director Brendan Robins says even before COVID-19, some retailers were struggling, adding that up to 15 per cent of discretionary retailers may not re-open after the pandemic passed.

“This will mean lease vacancy levels will increase across the country, particularly in large shopping centres with higher rents,” he says.

Mr Robins predicts retail rents will drop by as much as 20 per cent after the pandemic, with capital values also set to fall with the weaker rental income.

He thinks spending on essential items will continue at high levels, and cafe and restaurant trade will flourish when restrictions are lifted, though it could be two years before normal trade levels return.

Despite many people working from home during the pandemic, there is still

activity in the corporate office sector, according to the CBRE report.

“Investor interest for well-leased office property remains strong, though with an increased focus on the security of the lease,” says Ryan Parry, manager of CBRE Sunshine Coast’s office and retail services.

But he says owner-occupiers are less active, preferring to wait until business returns to some sort of normality.

While expecting face rents to return to previous levels after the pandemic, Mr Parry predicts tenants will focus on keeping overheads at modest levels, while landlords will offer more creative incentives to secure and retain tenants.

CBRE associate director of research Tom Broderick says the region is fortunate that it relies heavily on domestic tourism.

He says more than 80 per cent of visitor nights last year came from Australian tourists, compared with 60 per cent nationally and 30 per cent for Sydney.

“While there is great uncertainty around when the borders will be opened for foreign tourists, there appears to be a degree of confidence that domestic tourism will resume in the second half of 2020,” he says.

Okay peeps, the outlook for this weekend is a two-edged sword with swell that might come with the devil wind. Hopefully the wind direction changes over the coming days. Getting up early would be the smart option.

Things seem to be looking good for winter with these last few pulses, so fingers crossed. I’ve been hearing great things about the north end of the Coast, so maybe plan a road trip if the winds are looking good.
