A new initiative encouraging retirees to share personal stories of hope and happiness during times of upheaval has been launched to create a collection of memories to uplift and inspire the nation.

Remember When was born out of the COVID-19 physical distancing requirements, which has resulted in many older Australians feeling disconnected. From the editor In a region that continues to grow at the speed of the Sunshine Coast, it’s a given that the construction industry makes up a large portion of the local economy.

In fact, the value of building approvals for the region in the 2019-20 March financial year to date report was a whopping $1 billion. More than $960 million of that came under the residential category.

Of course, construction has taken a hit in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Leading industry bodies had expressed concern that the fallout would be devastating with thousands of job losses and a huge hit to the economy.

This is why the federal government’s HomeBuilder stimulus has been welcomed

with open arms. In this edition, we speak with those in the know about what exactly the grant will mean for our region. Plus, we have all of the information you need if you are thinking about cashing in on the $25,000 grant program.

The Birds and The Beans is an old-school coffee shop running out of a converted ’60s-era garage equipped with fuel pumps and hoses. If only it sold coffee for a dollar a litre! The decor is certainly Instagram worthy with throwbacks to different eras in time. Buderim locals know how great Vandy’s (as it’s affectionately known) is – the cafe is always full on Saturday mornings, but get in quick because it is only open until 11.30am!

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report indicates Americans are putting household disinfectants including bleach into their bodies because they believe such practices can ward off coronavirus. The report shows that four per cent of those surveyed admitted to drinking or gargling household agents, 18 per cent applied cleaning agents to their skin and nearly 10 per cent inhaled fumes from household disinfectants. The trend spiked in April when President Donald Trump speculated that disinfectants, “by injection inside or almost a cleaning,” could someday be used to clean the lungs of people infected with COVID-19.

Building boost for builders & renovators As our nation heads into inevitable recession in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, the federal government’s newest economic stimulus package, the HomeBuilder program, has been welcomed by building advocacy groups.

I

t was not the news Australia wanted to hear, but it came as little surprise. Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg last week confirmed Australia is now in a recession after 29 consecutive years of economic growth. It is believed to be the worst recession in 90 years.

The Australian economy shrank 0.3 per cent in the March quarter amid bushfires and the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. But the economic shock will be much worse in the current June quarter, when the full impact of virus-related shutdowns occurred.

Mr Frydenberg had pledged the first federal budget surplus in 12 years, but an update in July and the next budget in October are expected to confirm deep deficits.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has described the news as a heartache for the country.

“I really didn’t want to see a recession ever again in Australia,” he says. “As a government we worked so hard to bring the budget back into balance ... to see COVID-19 hit it like a torpedo is absolutely devastating.

“Where we find ourselves now is heartbreaking.”

Mr Morrison says the economic fallout could have been much worse, were it not for his government’s response to the pandemic. And he has outlined the federal government’s $688 million HomeBuilder program as a positive initiative to reduce the negative effects on the economy and boost the hammered construction sector.

Announced last Thursday, the income-capped construction scheme will offer grants of $25,000 to people who want to renovate their home or build a new one before the end of the year.

New house and land packages worth up to $750,000 and renovations worth $150,000 or more will be eligible.

Master Builders Australia, who welcomed the news, had predicted a 40 per cent decline in residential construction with 450,000 jobs on the line over the next six months because of coronavirus.

grants, support 140,000 direct jobs and another one million related jobs in the residential construction sector, including businesses and sole-trader builders, contractors, property developers, construction materials manufacturers, engineers, designers and architects.

The news provides some welcome relief for the Sunshine Coasts industry, according to Housing Industry Association (HIA) regional manager Ken Smith.

incentive will ensure that the significant contraction in new home-building activity in 2020-21 is not realised.”

He says although the majority of pre-COVID-19 construction work has continued, contraction in the volume of homes to be built, project cancellations and postponements for the next six months had created unparalleled concern.

“The grant reflects HIA’s call on the government to provide support for the housing industry to limit the impact of COVID-19 and bring forward housing activity into the second half of 2020 to avoid a significant drop in housing starts and jobs,’’ Mr Smith tells My Weekly Preview.

In an immediate response the developer behind the Sunshine Coast’s Harmony community, AVID Property Group, fast-tracked the release of 38 blocks of land five months ahead of schedule as inquiries tripled.

This follows last week’s release of 33 blocks, which were snapped up in less than two days.

“The HomeBuilder grant is causing a rush amongst those keen to get a foot on the property ladder or secure a new home,” AVID Queensland general manager Bruce Harper says. “We have seen a substantial increase in myweeklypreview.com.au

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: HOMEBUILDER GRANT HomeBuilder will provide eligible owneroccupiers (including first homebuyers) with a grant of $25,000 to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home.

A new home’s property value must not exceed $750,000.

Renovation projects to an existing home as a principal place of residence must be valued at $150,000 and $750,000, and the value of the existing property cannot exceed $1.5 million.

Contracts must be signed between June 4 and December 31, 2020.

Construction must start within three months of the contract date.

The grant can’t be used to build swimming pools, tennis courts, outdoor spas, saunas, sheds, garages or used on investment properties.

HomeBuilder will complement the existing Queensland First Home Owners’ Grant program, stamp duty concessions and other grant schemes, as well as the Commonwealth’s First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and First Home Super Saver Scheme.

To qualify you must be an Australian citizen and not be earning more than $125,000 per year as an individual or $200,000 per year as a couple (based on 2018-19 tax returns).

BUILDING ADVICE Thinking of building? Here are some tips from HIA Sunshine Coast.

Q. Why is it worth going to the trouble to find the right builder? What can happen if you don’t choose the right builder?

A. There are two keys to successfully choosing a good builder. Most importantly, deal with a professional new home builder – someone with a solid reputation and professional subcontractors who will work closely with you throughout the building process. Secondly, don’t rush. Take time to consider all aspects of your build and ask lots of questions – the more information you have, the easier it is to eliminate uncertainties.

Further by choosing a builder that belongs to an industry association such as the Housing Industry Association, it helps to ensure that you are choosing someone who belongs to a professional association, which has members codes of ethics, provides education and training for members and promotes the notion of members being leaders in their industry.

Q. Where should you look for a builder?

A. The benefit of using online tasking sites is that you can check reviews from other customers and save yourself time ringing around for quotes. You can also source someone locally to do the work so they will know the area, be able to come quickly and may have some knowledge of the kind of building you are asking them to deal with. You can also choose from a lot of quotes, meaning you can get something done at the best price. Having said that, word of mouth remains one of the best ways to find a tradesman. This is because the reference will come from someone you know and trust.

Q. What are the main questions to ask a prospective builder?

A. Peace of mind still comes from asking the right questions.

Before you hire a builder, ask about licenses, insurance and experience and make sure you are in agreement on a quote and create a detailed prepared time line that you can both agree on.

inquiries and buyers. This [grant] will be a catalyst for thousands of Australians to make the decision to embark upon purchasing their first home, upgrade to a new home, or downsize. In the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic we saw inquiries drop as buyers were a little uncertain about the future.

“However, we have seen this shift with inquiries picking up significantly – back to the levels we were seeing in February before shutdowns occurred.”

Master Builders Queensland CEO Grant Galvin agrees the package will be key to ensuring residential construction in the state doesn’t fall off a cliff by August or September. He is now calling on the Queensland government to step up and offer further support.

“We’re also hoping the Queensland government will come to the party and follow suit by expanding the $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant to all new home builds. That would put Queensland firmly at the front of the game and mean anyone building a new home in Queensland would be eligible for $40,000 towards their new home, not just first homebuyers.

“We’re also asking the Queensland government to urgently bring forward and consider new opportunities for social housing – whether this be a new social housing construction program or maintenance of existing stock.

“Programs like this have a clear community benefit, as well as ensuring the industry has a clear pipeline of work and certainty, and support smaller contractors, who won’t necessarily see the benefit of the new home stimulus or the renovation package on offer.”

Mr Galvin says the renovation component of the package is also welcome.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics December 2019 quarter reports that $2214.0 million was spent on renovations across the country in that period.

While there has been criticism of the renovation component’s price range, which is capped at $750,000, Mr Morrison has defended it.

However, Labor leader Anthony Albanese is doubtful the program will spark a rush of people taking out loans or spending cash on major works.

“There aren’t too many battlers out there who have a lazy $150,000,’’ he says. “That’s a pretty decent renovation to your bathroom or to your kitchen.”

Mr Albanese says his recent bathroom makeover cost far less than $150,000. “It didn’t have pearl taps, it didn’t have a gold bath. That’s a substantial amount.

We’ll wait and see what the take-up is.”

At 14 she broke her hand during a competition. While she was in recovery she decided to quit the sport. “It was all I knew, it was my life. For the first time, I felt incredibly lost. I went from being extremely dedicated to something for a long time, to feeling like I had nothing. I went from having goals, dreams, purpose, passion, and a schedule to nothing,” she says.

Ms Brooke Smith found some comfort in dancing and had begun to compete in a range of different genres, but when going to see the original Center Stage at the cinema, her soul was stirred.

“Throughout the film, I had crazy goose bumps, chills, and was filled with a ridiculous amount of inspiration. I walked out of that theatre a changed girl. I knew right then and there… I want to act, to tell stories of overcoming struggle and challenge, to make people laugh, to dance, to perform, to inspire, to change lives just like those actors in that movie did for me.”

She admits she was still a “perfectionist to a fault” while pursuing acting. So when she didn’t secure a place in the performing arts college program she had set her heart on, it was a devastating blow.

When she came across an opportunity to audition for a super-intense performing arts scholarship program in LA, Ms Brooke Smith flew from her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, and secured a place on the program over the thousands from around the world who tried out. Fresh out of high school, she was working from 7am to 9pm every day on her craft. As soon as she completed the program, Ms Brook Smith was signed to a dance agency, but wouldn’t get a look in with acting agents as she didn’t have an acting reel.

“I was extremely discouraged and very confused on what to do next. A couple of weeks later, I saw a sign on the wall for

ou may recognise Rachele Brooke Smith from the films Center Stage: Turn It Up, Bring It On: Fight to the Finish and Burlesque. She has also shared the screen with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys, with Zac Efron in 17 Again, and with Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man 2.

What sets her apart from the plethora of dancing and acting double-threats in Hollywood is that she is also a qualified psychologist who is passionate about mental health. This distinction is what has seen her connect with Beautiful Minds, which was founded on the Sunshine Coast.

Her interest in psychology while pursing a career in front of the camera was a result of her childhood, where she spent many years dedicated to gymnastics.

“I was a very competitive gymnast, but I found it incredibly demanding. It wasn’t

necessarily the stress or demand I received from others that made me live in this awful and pretty constant place of worry, fear, and anxiety – it was the personal stress and artificial pressure I put on myself. I was anything but my best friend and biggest supporter,” she says.

“The result was that I felt this extreme pressure to be the best at whatever I was doing. This overwhelming stress ended up taking a pretty severe toll on my physical health and is something I still deal with today. It was so bad that I stayed home sick half the school year and would throw up on a weekly basis, right before gymnastics practice on Tuesdays, because of how nervous I felt all the time. This was from the ages of about eight to 12 years old.”

Ms Brooke Smith says she was always fretting about getting hurt or not living up to her own high standards of perfection. “I

auditions for the lead girl in Center Stage: Turn It Up, the sequel to the very film that changed me as a little girl. My initial reaction was there was no way this could be happening. It seemed so surreal, almost not even possible,” she recalls.

Ms Brook Smith completed six auditions for the role of Kate Parker and just a few days after being told she had the role, she was off to Vancouver for a couple of months to film. It was an experience she described as a “literal dream come true” and a flurry of other roles followed.

Armed with a major in psychology, Ms Brook Smith started the Disruptive Movement, a powerful, practical online program for people to help them transform fear into action. She has also teamed up with her partner Emilio Palafox to create Consious Kreatives, which offers “edutainment” to help people better connect to themselves, others, and the world around them.

Ms Brook Smith says perception is everything and we can upgrade our perceptions of ourselves as well as the world around us.

“Be careful what you choose to believe as it becomes who you are,” she says. “In these hard times, it’s really easy to find ourselves focusing on what we don’t want, but what we focus on expands, so the more we focus on what we don’t want, that is what we will find ourselves experiencing more of.

READY FOR TAKE-OFF The long-awaited expansion to the Sunshine Coast Airport is now complete and ready to welcome the world to our region. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

C

onstruction on the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project continued during COVID-19 to deliver a new runway that’s longer, wider and better aligned with prevailing winds and able to accommodate larger, more fuelefficient aircraft.

Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project director Ross Ullman says the airport will welcome the first plane on the runway on June 14. More than one million labour hours have been invested in the project to reach this milestone.

“In the final week of construction, crews onsite will complete the final checks required to make runway 13/31 is ready for operations. Tune into Sunshine Coast Council’s social media channels to follow the historic opening.”

Division 8 councillor Jason O’Pray says the new runway is a critical piece of infrastructure for the Sunshine Coast.

“It will play a major role in the recovery of our region post the COVID-19 pandemic, delivering new export opportunities, jobs and boosting tourism,” he says.

“By 2040, the new runway will

have contributed $4.1 billion to gross regional product and created 2230 new full-time jobs for our local workforce.”

Mr Ullman says during peak works, “the project site was a hive of activity with up to 240 people – a largely local workforce – constructing the runway.

“To date, Sunshine Coast-based companies have received in excess or $100 million in work from this project alone.”

Other benefits to the region are set to include direct access from the Sunshine Coast to the world, the potential to attract more than two million passengers annually, and a boost to tourism and export opportunities.

Sunshine Coast Airport corporate relations head Ayllie White says the Sunshine Coast is in a perfect position to cater for pent-up demand from southern states heading into winter.

“We’ve got wide open spaces, beautiful beaches and a strong reputation for wellness.

“Our industry has definitely suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with travel and tourism hit especially hard.

“But we do know that Australians love to travel, and we could actually benefit in the future from a tourism market which is now looking towards domestic destinations rather than heading overseas.

“We are hopeful our partnership with Air New Zealand will be reinstated soon – it’s an important market for Sunshine Coast tourism. Unfortunately this season has been suspended, but we are working to bring it back next year.”

Visit Sunshine Coast chairman David Ryan says the return of airlines to the region is a critical component for the recovery of the tourism industry.

“The new Sunshine Coast Airport runway is a tremendous achievement that will ensure the region is well placed for the future when we can welcome the return of airlines,” Mr Ryan says.

“There is no doubt following the COVID-19 pandemic that this will take time, but it is hoped pent-up domestic travel demand would help kickstart the industry, once borders reopen.”

GRAND WINTER BALL IS GOING AHEAD The STEPS charity is hosting a virtual ball to raise much-needed funds for its Pathways College. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

here’s not much that COVID-19 hasn’t affected, and the STEPS Grand Winter Ball is no exception. But it’s still going ahead, albeit shaped a little differently.

This year’s event, presented by BA Murphy Constructions, is going virtual on June 20.

STEPS Group managing director Carmel Crouch says the original decision to hold the ball online was a difficult one.

“The purpose of the ball is to raise vital funds for the expansion of the STEPS Pathways College, and with the incredible support from our corporate and event partners, our vision of hosting the Grand Winter Ball online for the first time has been realised. In times like these adaptation and flexibility are key and we are on track to deliver an evening of fun and entertainment for our guests.”

You can expect a star-studded line-up, including emcee Steve Jacobs, ARIA Award winners Sheppard, and singers Anthony Callea, Tim Campbell and Paulini.

INGREDIENTS • Four eggs • ½ cup bacon pieces • I tsp crushed garlic • ½ cup cream

METHOD To make the ‘pasta’, beat eggs together and cook in a hot pan with a little butter. Cook them fairly thin and then slice into fettuccine lengths. Cook the bacon pieces in a pan until just how you like it. Add the ‘pasta’, then pour in the cream and garlic. Toss it around until the sauce covers the egg. Serve topped with parmesan and parsley.

Skipping the Queue in a family law system under pressure Our family law system is under pressure. Courts are underfunded, Judges are under pressure, and the system is beyond capacity. In short, families are being failed by our family law system.

What are the alternatives?

There are striking similarities between the health and family law systems. In the public health system, if you require surgery that is not considered life-threatening, you are generally placed in a list and told you will be called when it is your time. You do not know who your surgeon will be, or how long you will be waiting, but you could be waiting a very long time. The surgeon is free, but at what cost to the uncertainty in your life?

Similarly, in the family law system if you cannot resolve a family law dispute, you apply to the court for a Judge to decide on your behalf.

You do not know which judge you will be allocated, and you do not know when you will receive your first court date which can take several months.

However, like the public health system, which has a privately paying option, so too are there private options within the family law system that are often overlooked.

In terms of a court hearing, the alternative is to engage in arbitration. An arbitration can be booked at a time that suits you, the other party and each of your legal representatives, and you can determine what arrangements will be made for the holding of the arbitration.

In this pseudo “private” family law system, decisions can be made very quickly and are just as binding as if they are made by the court.

What about the cost?

The uncertainty associated with delays means that, even with the best of lawyers, the outcome generated through a delayed court process can vary significantly to what was advised at the commencement of the matter, and this is what is referred to when the media talk of our family law system failing families.

On the other hand, having a matter set down for arbitration quickly with the agreement of the other party, means a decision can be determined within weeks, rather than months and years with the final outcome received in a short space of time.

Having practised in family law for over 16 years, I know too well the trauma that being stuck in the family law system without any options can impose upon clients.

Advocating at an early stage to take control over proceedings will, in most cases, bring about better outcomes.

RECESSION BOMBSHELL LANDS AMID NORMALITY

Sami Muirhead shares some shocking news with all those food snobs out there.

T

he world is solemn. So, let us take a break! I’ve never received so much hate and love mail in my life after I supported a very controversial stance: I love tinned soup.

The outcry! The anger! The judgement!

I never knew we had so many soup snobs in our society! I was raised on tinned tomato soup. It was a hug for the soul in the ’70s. I would race home from school and open a can into a saucepan to soon be sitting and slurping away as I watched the dizzying drama unfold on Days Of Our Lives. It was the best part of my week!

My single mum owned a snack bar so she was busy working, therefore us kids became self-sufficient quickly.

Then I grew up. Remember the foods of the ’90s and early 2000s – dining alfresco (it was just a patio) and eating nachos and focaccia followed by warm mud cake served with cream and icecream? We threw sundried tomatoes and olives into our pasta and thought we were so continental. I drank crazy cocktails with names such as Fuzzy Ducks and Sex On The Beach.

In my thirties, red velvet cupcakes were the thing. We all got chomping Caesar salads or making that crunchy noodle salad that serves 324 friends.

Dining in at Pizza Hut was all the rage and the French goodness that is the macaroon entered our dialogue. New York baked cheesecakes and bruschetta surged in

popularity. And we met our friends in a cafe to share a mini-raspberry friand and a wood-fired pizza.

Nowadays, fermented foods are swelling in popularity, and we all agreed to throw away half our wage on avocado on toast served with feta. Grazing platters are the MVP, alongside anything with the word ‘deconstructed’ in it. The world has embraced kale, charcoal, sliders and soy-milk half-strength cappuccinos. We have gone mad for burrito bowls and craft beer. Plant-based food is king and

But I still sometimes come home and open a tin of tomato soup. Yes, it is full of preservatives and no, it is not better than homemade soup. But for me, tinned soup is more than just food. It tastes like home.

For all the negative Nellies who are outraged at my support of tinned soup, you also need to know I drink tap water AND water from public water bubblers.

And I have not died. You just cannot take the bogan out of the girl.

The coalition is confident it can repeat its feat in flattening Australia’s deficit. Analysis by Katina Curtis, AAP.

A

mid a week of bombshell news, life has felt like it’s approaching normality. There has been traffic on the roads, diners back in cafes, prime ministerial ideas being floated on newspaper front pages. And a recession.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg was doing his best cheerleader routine as he went through the national accounts last Wednesday. Australia’s economy shrank by 0.3 per cent, but he produced a “very powerful and relevant chart” showing Australia’s relative strength on international comparisons. Furthermore, he said, economists had initially predicted their version of Armageddon, contemplating a GDP collapse of more than 20 per cent by the middle of the year, but they’re now pointing to about half that.

While he did concede the June quarter figures are expected to be so bad we are in a recession right now, he didn’t let the R-word pass his lips. That was left to the prime minister last Thursday morning.

“I really didn’t want to see a recession ever again in Australia,” Scott Morrison told reporters shivering outside a home under construction outside Canberra.

“As a government, we worked so hard to bring the budget back into balance.”

Remember, Morrison was the architect of three of the past four budgets.

Frydenberg said the coalition had conquered the mountain of debt and deficit once before and it could do it again.

Scaling this mountain will be a whole different adventure to dealing with the $18 billion deficit the coalition took on in 2013. After the tens of billions spent in keeping people in jobs and business cashflow liquid, the modest surplus hoped

for in 2020/21 is now looking like a deficit many, many times more than that $18 billion – estimates have put it above $100 billion. The scale of numbers thrown around earlier during the pandemic can make the $688 million HomeBuilder package feel small, but it marks a pivot towards sector-specific recovery measures.

Arguably one of the most momentous occasions will take place on Friday 12 June, when Sunshine Coast Council will hand over the new international standard runway to the operators of Sunshine Coast Airport. This occasion will mark a point in time when the vision becomes the reality – a new runway that will provide the Sunshine Coast with its own direct travel and export gateway to the world.

The capability that this new runway will provide our Sunshine Coast for decades to come, cannot be understated. A hallmark of successful cities, communities and regions is connectivity and the Sunshine Coast Airport will now have the capacity to accommodate flights to all ports in Australia as well as Asia and the Western Pacific. The project has been decades in the making and is the single largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by Council.

Importantly at this time, the Sunshine Coast Airport will play a critical role in supporting our tourism industry recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the added advantage of the new runway, the sky should be well and truly the limit.

AUSTRALIAN OVER US EQUITIES

U

S equities have responded better to COVID-19 than Australian equities. Since the market peak in February, the S&P/ASX 200 Index has lost 17.4 per cent (on a total return basis), compared with the S&P 500 Index’s 10.0 per cent loss. But we see reasons to support being weighted to Australian equities rather than US equities.

Why is this so? Sector composition explains much of why the US equity market has outperformed Australia’s during the COVID-19 crisis, and even as far back as the global financial crisis. Some of the worstperforming sectors during COVID-19 have been financials (mainly banks), real estate investment trusts (REITs) and energy. These are all sectors the S&P/ASX 200 Index has a bigger weighting in. Meanwhile, the US

index has benefited from a greater presence of technology stocks, which are experiencing less of a sell-off due to digital platforms benefitting from growing adoption rates during lockdowns.

It is possible the drags on the Australian equity market will start to subside – energy may recover as oil prices appear to have bottomed, and with oil demand to return as restrictions are eased; REITs in general, in our view, are trading on attractive valuations; and while we don’t expect the banks to lead the recovery in markets, their emerging value may stem the declines.

Four reasons why Australia might do better than the US: Valuation – The gap in 12-month forward price-to-earnings (PE) multiples between Australian and US equities is wider than normal. Currently, the S&P 500 Index is on a forward PE ratio of circa 22x versus the S&P/ASX 200 Index on approximately 19x – a three-point difference compared with a long-term average of 1x. This is despite a similar earnings outlook for the next 12 months.

Currency – Our forecast is for the Australian dollar to US dollar (AUD/USD) exchange rate to stabilise around $US0.65 by year-end, which suggests less of a tailwind for US equities from currency movements going forward.

Further, greater success in controlling COVID-19 should reduce the risks of a second wave.

Stimulus potential – We believe that if needed, Australia has capacity for more sizeable stimulus than the US, due to a lower government debt/GDP ratio, less aggressive use of quantitative easing (QE) to date, and more political support.

Australia’s net debt/GDP ratio is projected

to be around 35 to 40 per cent, which, although high by Australia’s standards, is low compared with the US, which could reach 100 per cent of GDP in the next year.

The US Federal Reserve has already expanded its QE program, and now owns nearly 30 per cent of US Treasuries. The New York Fed recently broadened its unconventional measures to now include purchases of corporate bond exchangetraded funds. Meanwhile, the RBA has only recently introduced QE, owning seven per cent of the Australian Commonwealth Government Bond (ACGB) market.

Home not so comfy in winter?

Winter is here, and even with COVID-19 lockdowns easing, many of us still working from home will not only be feeling the chill, but also the financial strain that comes with warming up.

Researchers at the University of South Australia’s Research Node for Low Carbon Living suggest the thermal efficiency of the houses we live in deserves some serious scrutiny.

Dr David Whaley and Dr Stephen Berry are two of Australia’s leading experts on low-energy housing, and their research shows the standards set for Australia’s residential buildings are simply not sufficient for the climate we build them in – whatever the season.

“With so many people spending such large amounts of time in their homes right now, I think many of them are realising the high cost and low comfort of inefficient housing,” Dr Berry says.

“If your home hasn’t been built to sufficiently keep out the cold, this winter, perhaps more than any other in most people’s lives, you’re going to feel it, either in your hip pocket or in your bones.”

Over the past few years, the Research Node for Low Carbon Living has amassed a wealth of data demonstrating how simple construction principals or basic retrofitting can dramatically improve the comfort of a house while simultaneously reducing energy bills and lowering carbon emissions.

CONSTRUCTION AND LEASING CONTINUE TO SOAR AHEAD AT FOUNDATION PLACE

oundation Place, the first commercial building developed

by Evans Long in the new Maroochydore City Centre, is on track for a late September completion this year with 65 per cent of the building already committed to a range of tenants.

The building’s sixth level was recently completed with just two levels remaining before the project is completed for tenants to access in October this year.

Evans Long director Matt Evans says he is pleased that construction has surged ahead and leasing enquiries have held firm during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are well on track with our team working onsite and observing all social distancing requirements due to COVID-19. There have been no delays as our head contractor procured mechanical items early and engaged local firms for glazing systems.

“We have also completed the onsite Envac system, which will connect to the CBD’s automated waste collection system, which in turn will connect to the transfer station building off Carnaby Street prior to

getting in early and securing offices in what is expected to become the heart of the Sunshine Coast business community,” Mr Gould says.

Foundation Place will comprise 5006 square metres of floor space over eight storeys, incorporating a ground-floor retail space with 77 car parking spaces, and will boast a five-star energy rating under the National Australian Build Environment Rating System (NABERS).

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

I recently read about a stand-up paddler being abused by surfers. The story portrayed him as a victim.

What it failed to mention was about the victim he actually ran over and the damage he caused to the surf craft.

The moral of the story? Make sure you can control your craft and follow the surfing etiquette.

I think everyone is getting desperate for waves! Last Saturday I counted 50 surfers at Moffats and no waves coming through. Not sure what they were all doing, but it was not surfing.

So, get what you can and be polite!
