From the editor It has been a big news week. The shock death of American George Floyd and the subsequent protests and rallies against ingrained racism dominated global headlines. These are the stories that separate good journalism from bad. It is now that we need a particularly strong presence in the arena of public journalism, freedom of press and factual reporting.

SUMMER BUSHFIRES AN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER An expert advisory panel has been formed to assess the devastation of the recent bushfires, and try to save Australia’s precious flora and fauna now on the brink of extinction. WORDS: AAP.

ustralia’s Black Summer bushfires have left hundreds of animal and plant species at risk of extinction in an ecological disaster.

More than 300 nationally listed threatened species were in the path of the fires. Other wildlife and plants have lost their habitat and may now be imperilled, the bushfires royal commission has been told. “The impact of the 2019-20 bushfires on threatened species and other flora and fauna has been severe,” says Australia’s threatened species commissioner Sally Box.

An expert advisory panel has labelled the bushfires an ecological disaster.

“The fires covered an unusually large area and in many places they burnt with an unusually high intensity,” Dr Box adds.

“The entire known range of some species was burnt.”

More than 1800 animals and plant species and ecological communities are listed as threatened nationally – 327 of these species lost part of their habitat to the fires. They are mainly plant species, but are also mammals, frogs, birds and reptiles.

“For some species that were considered threatened before the fires, the fires have now likely increased their risk of extinction,” Dr Box says.

“But there are also many other fire-affected species that were considered secure before the fires, who have now lost much of their habitat and might be imperilled.”

Dr Box says the panel has so far identified more than 750 taxa in need of urgent management intervention.

She says a large number of species will be considered for listing as threatened under the act. “There certainly are hundreds that have been impacted by the fires and need help.”

The expert panel led by Dr Box has identified 119 animal species in need of urgent intervention. They include a number of species already on the threatened list before the bushfires, such as the Kangaroo Island dunnart and eastern bristlebird. The fires have now increased their extinction risk.

The dunnart, a ground-dwelling mammal, lost 90 per cent of its habitat in the fires on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island. Having lost their protective

vegetation cover, the surviving dunnarts now face added danger from feral cats.

Many other fire-affected species, such as the Albert’s lyrebird and parma wallaby, were not previously considered threatened.

The panel identified 709 plant species at high risk from the fires, 471 of which were in urgent need of management intervention.

This list includes the critically endangered Wollemi pines in the New South Wales Blue Mountains. There are fewer than 100 mature trees left in the wild, says David Crust from the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.

He says the species was known from fossil records from the Jurassic period and was thought to be extinct before it was rediscovered in 1994.

Mr Crust says most of the mature trees were impacted by fire but appear to have survived. Many of the 200 juvenile plants had died, although a number were resprouting.

Sadly, more than one billion animals are thought to have perished in the bushfires.

Pregnancy challenges amid pandemic For hundreds of Sunshine Coast women expected to give birth during COVID-19, the rules and expectations have changed. This is what pregnancy and birth look like during a global pandemic. WORDS: AAP and MWP.

P

regnancy during coronavirus looks far from normal for soon-to-be Australian mums.

Check-ups over the phone, self-examinations and partner-less appointments are just some of the changes women have experienced during the pandemic.

Courtney Macleod-Smith is due to give birth to her daughter shortly and for her last trimester, appointments have largely been via telehealth or at her doctor’s clinic without her husband.

“It all became so clinical and it feels like the emotion has been taken out of everything,” the 32-year-old says.

“And it’s supposed to be an emotional and exciting time, especially with a first pregnancy.”

Her husband Stu was not allowed in the room at some medical appointments and on one occasion had to wait in the car while she had a scan. It was equally strange when Mrs Macleod-Smith had to essentially conduct her own examination and measure her belly over the phone for her obstetrician.

But Mrs Macleod-Smith is grateful her husband will be allowed in the delivery room.

Fellow mum-to-be Francesca Gardner is giving birth for the first time in July and has been having appointments from the car park of her hospital and via telehealth.

When she had in-person appointments, her husband Jack waited outside while she and her doctor put him

on loudspeaker so he could hear his son’s heartbeat.

Mrs Gardner will soon participate in online birthing classes, which is not something she imagined would be part of her pregnancy experience.

Dianne Zalitis is a midwife and clinical lead of the nationally run Pregnancy, Birth and Baby service and says women have been noticeably more anxious during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“Pregnancy is a time usually filled with joy and support and visits, but so many women have had that taken from them,” Ms Zalitis says.

“The social emotional aspect has changed and that is an important part – baby showers, visits – and having to get your head around not having that can be tough.”

At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Australia, there was a lack of clarity about how much it could impact pregnant women, which contributed significantly to stress, Ms Zalitis adds.

The midwife, who has more than 30 years’ experience, says there is also little consistency across the nation as to how doctors provide care, causing some confusion for expectant mothers.

Ms Zalitis says there is a feeling for some women that they had to enter and exit hospital quickly, due to fear of contracting COVID-19 or concern they were taking up a much-needed bed, when it’s important they are given the freedom to recover properly.

Her advice for pregnant women is to stick to their birth plan and communicate as much as possible with doctors and nurses, who are also missing the personal connection to patients.

And being 36 and pregnant does come with a few challenges. Of course, I never expected to be carrying my baby in the middle of a deadly pandemic.

As the cases of COVID-19 continue to grow around the world, so too does my belly. As my eyes well with tears at the global death statistics, my tummy swells in a constant reminder that I am responsible for the life of my unborn child.

Couple this with bouts of severe morning sickness, a chest infection, tonsillitis and pleurisy, and it’s been, at times, an emotional experience.

I have, however, found an inner strength; a renewed focus of the world and the blessings that I’ve been given. I certainly do not take this pregnancy or my position for granted.

I’ve taken to self-isolation with gusto and thoroughly enjoy the slow pace of my new norm. As a family, we’ve enjoyed weekend-long Monopoly games, DIY

projects, baking, and at-home camp-outs.

But with each week that ticks by, I can’t continue to ignore the reality – that I will be giving birth during a once-in-a-century pandemic that has stolen almost 360,000 lives. Never have I been more grateful to call Australia home.

Our political and medical leaders continue to lead the charge in combatting the spikes that have speared other nations.

I feel I can trust in the medical advice being offered and the decreasing COVID-19 cases.

Naturally, there will be no baby shower and no joy-filled visits to baby goods’ stores – activities that are trivial in comparison with the crisis, but that help expectant mothers celebrate the impending birth of their child. I cried when I was told I had to attend each ultrasound appointment on my own, and panicked when there was talk my husband would not be allowed in the delivery room. Thankfully, this has now been given the okay.

At this stage there will be no visitors to the hospital, which honestly I’m okay with if it means keeping our new little one safe.

It is daunting to tell family and friends that our baby’s arrival won’t be accompanied by the traditional celebration.

There will be no cuddles and kisses, and we will be putting a hold on visitors until our baby reaches a growth milestone. But, I will not let a lack of understanding rattle me, because when all is said and done, as parents we have one job and that is to protect and love our children. myweeklypreview.com.au

MAINTAIN WELLBEING DURING COVID-19 Bringing a new child into the world is an emotional experience for parents, siblings and extended family. With the added pressure of COVID-19, it can also be a distressing time.

Queensland Health offers these general tips for looking after your mental health and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. MAKE TIME FOR YOU • Get healthy – be active, eat well and get enough sleep.

• Keep learning – challenge your mind and seek out new things.

• Show kindness – give back, show gratitude and bring joy to others’ lives.

• Connect more – develop relationships, stay connected and care for each other.

• Take notice – be mindful. Stay in the moment. Experience the world around you.

• Embrace nature – step outside, connect with the natural world and take care of the planet, even if you are limited to your own yard or balcony, or a walk around the block.

2. STAY CONNECTED It’s important to stay connected to family, friends and colleagues. They are your support

There were 3204 babies born at SCUH and 651 at Buderim Private Hospital during 2019.

6. LOOK AFTER YOUR PHYSICAL WELLBEING Taking good care of your body is one of the most important things you can do to improve your mental wellbeing. Try to eat regularly and, where you can, eat a wellbalanced nutritious diet. Find a way to keep physically active.

7. TAKE SOME TIME OUT FOR THINGS YOU ENJOY Even though times are difficult, you should take breaks and do something you enjoy.

Taking time for you is always allowed and is really important for your mental wellbeing.

FOR FAMILIES – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Pregnant women should be considered a vulnerable group. The following advice has been sourced from Queensland Health and The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

DURING PREGNANCY • Limit the amount of times you need to leave the house – leave only for essential purposes, like buying food, going to work or going to medical appointments.

• Stay at least 1.5 metres away from people who don’t live in your home.

• Stay at least 1.5 metres away from anyone who is unwell.

• Hand wash regularly and frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

• Report health concerns immediately.

• While it will not influence a response to COVID-19 infection, routine whooping cough and influenza vaccination should continue to be administered in pregnancy.

BIRTH • Partners will be allowed in the delivery room during labour.

• Check-ups with doctors are going ahead, but often via telehealth or at a distance.

• Women who wish to breastfeed their babies should be encouraged and supported to do so. At the moment there is no evidence that the virus is carried in breast milk.

• Hospital visitors may not be allowed.

FOLLOWING BIRTH • Stay at home as much as possible, practise good hygiene.

• Limit the number of people coming into your house to no more than two people at once, who stay 1.5 metres away from you and baby when possible.

If you develop cold or flu symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

oronavirus restrictions are easing across Australia, but don’t expect to be shaking hands any time soon.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the more people who stick to physical distancing and good hand hygiene, the sooner other parts of the economy will reopen. Handshakes and other forms of physical contact remain off the agenda.

“At this stage I couldn’t see that changing for the rest of this year to be honest,” Mr Morrison says.

“It’s those simple things – the social distancing, the bumping elbows, the washing hands, the downloading the COVIDSafe app.

“They’re the simple things you can do that actually protect us probably more than anything.”

His message comes as restrictions ease in Queensland. We are now able to travel statewide, while pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes are allowed to seat up to 20 people.

The state brought forward the next easing of restrictions by almost two weeks after zero new cases were announced for the third straight day on Sunday.

The changes include 20 spectators being allowed to attend community sporting fields.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the government is working with the hospitality industry to further open their businesses by next Friday to have 20 people per designated area, providing it meets the one person per four square metre restrictions.

However, all patrons must be seated,

staff can work only in an assigned area and only table service will be permitted.

Mr Morrison warns against complacency as society gradually returns to normal.

“The coronavirus hasn’t gone anywhere,” Mr Morrison says. “It’s still out there. We’ve just been very successful at getting over the top of it.

“But it can come back pretty quick and we’ve got to be sure we don’t get this further wave, and the way we don’t do that is people practising all those simple things that have been put in place.”

Australia’s deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth says lifting restrictions is a balancing act between economic benefit and health risks.

“We’re taking a deliberately safe and cautious approach,” he says.

“Most importantly we’re taking the time to gather the data over the coming weeks to determine whether it’s safe to move to the next round of lifting restrictions.”

Coronavirus restrictions are slowly being eased across Australia, with states and territories at different stages. Earlier this week, the Queensland Government fast-tracked the easing of restrictions, which include: • A limit of 20 people at home visits, non-contact indoor and outdoor community sport, personal training, gyms, indoor and outdoor pools, museums and galleries, historic sites, weddings, parks, playgrounds, libraries, places of worship, cinemas, open homes, auctions and beauty salons.

• Up to 20 people allowed in restaurants, pubs and clubs. As of June 5, these venues can have 20 people in each section of their business. For example, if a club has multiple restaurants, they can serve 20 in each as long as no more than one person is seated per four square metres.

• Recreational travel is now allowed across the state.

• Up to 50 funeral attendees allowed.

• Borders remain closed.

THE RULES The public health rules include: • Physical distancing – keeping a 1.5-metre distance from people who don’t live in your home.

• Four square metres per person when indoors.

• Hand hygiene.

• Respiratory hygiene.

• Frequent environmental cleaning and disinfection.

SEKISUI DECISION The controversial Sekisui House Yaroomba Beach development is now a step closer to fruition with the Queensland Planning and Environment Court rejecting an appeal against the development.

The project – which includes an integrated 220-room five-star Westin resort hotel, serviced apartments and extensive conference and recreation facilities – has triggered environmental concerns from community groups.

The court found the proposed development should be approved subject to the conditions in the council’s original decision notice, but with the amendments recommended by turtle experts. In doing so, the court will order that the appeals be dismissed.

“The court approval, coupled with council’s stringent conditions and the variations sought by the court, will ensure the developer delivers on the expectations of council and the commitments and promises made to our Sunshine Coast community,” Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says.

“This development will provide substantial economic benefits to the Coolum locality and wider Sunshine Coast area – in a time when we need it most. This is the type of investment that the Sunshine Coast economy needs.”

Visit Sunshine Coast has backed the decision with chair David Ryan saying it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. “The region is in desperate need of new, high-quality tourism accommodation.

The developers of the Westin have gone out of their way to incorporate industryleading environmental initiatives, and significantly changed their original plans as a result of community and council feedback.”

he coronavirus economic storm has stoked fears of rising superannuation fraud, reliance on payday loans, and dodgy business practices.

A tool to help people consolidate super accounts has been suspended after fraud was detected through the government’s early access to retirement savings scheme.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw says there has been an increase in superannuation fraud, along with potential crime associated with welfare and wage subsidies.

But he has told a parliamentary inquiry that authorities have moved quickly to stamp out the practices.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission expects more phoenix activity, with companies folding to wriggle out of debts.

Financial regulators are also concerned about a rise in payday lending and overdue bank loans when deferrals and government support ends.

The value of business and household loan deferral has hit $250 billion, prompting the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to warn of a looming cliff in September.

FINDING TRUE MENTAL FITNESS Founded on the Sunshine Coast, Beautiful Minds has added another impressive name to its line-up – spiritual leader Rabbi Mordecai Finley. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane

M

ordecai Finley was 18 years old when he first witnessed how people could be instantly transformed from the inside out.

It was 1973 and he was completing the punishing selection process for the US Marine Corps when his drill sergeant performed the impossible.

“We’d been running for miles on the

sand for several hours and guys started collapsing. We were strewn out all over the place, far from marching in step as we were meant to,” he recalls.

“The drill instructor spoke about the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He said, ‘In November of 1950, we were surrounded by 200,000 Chinese and we didn’t leave our dead. You people would have left the dead’.”

It was two simple sentences, but every one of the collapsed men got to their feet, and continued on marching, this time in perfect unison. “This was true transformation from within and I marvelled at it,” Rabbi Finley says.

Now a doctor, co-founder of the Ohr HaTorah Synagogue in Los Angeles and international expert assisting the work of Beautiful Minds, an organisation founded on the Sunshine Coast, Rabbi Finley had experienced a spiritual awakening in the years prior to enlisting in the Marines and says the three years he spent with the corps only strengthened his connection to God. Even though he was student body president, the editor of the school newspaper and known as one of the cool kids, Rabbi Finley knew he was lacking in discipline.

“I looked at myself in 1973 – even though I was on a good path, I knew I wasn’t anywhere near what I wanted to be when I got to college,” he says.

“I was being mentored after class by a teacher in the ways of the Gurdjieff school, which had a profound impact on me. He adapted the teachings for me around expanded consciousness. It drove me to feel like I wanted to go to a monastery.

“The Marines told me I’d be able to study part time, I’d be issued with a first

name – private – all I could do was blink and breathe without permission, and the first thing they were going to do was shave my head, so I thought it was pretty close to a monastery.

“I was taking a vow of silence, shaving my head and following orders.”

He received meritorious promotions and left the marines in 1980 with the rank of sergeant. But when he was offered a position at the US Naval Academy, he knew it was time to pursue a new path.

“I had a vision to change the military one person at a time. It didn’t have a very good name following the Vietnam War and I like to think I was able to make some changes to the people I worked with during that time,” he says.

“I got the discipline I wanted and because I didn’t drink, I would go to the gym and the library instead and ended up reading the entire legal section in the base library.”

Rabbi Finley went on to pursue a degree in political science with a vision to change society through the political system, but when he continually asked questions of his tutor about the will to be moral, he was informed with annoyance “that’s religion or something”.

“I came home and thought about it over the weekend and while it seems so obvious now that I do what I do, at the

“But I now knew my path was to become a rabbi. I wanted to give others the chance to have that inner transformation that had captivated me while I was on the beach that day in 1973. So I called the Hebrew Union College, which is a rabbinical school in Los Angeles, to ask them how to become a rabbi.

“They thought I was sketchy, having just left the marines, but told me I needed to go to Israel, enter an immersive language program to learn Hebrew and then go to college. I said ‘yes sir’ and hung up and then called the travel agent and got it done.”

He arrived in Israel in January 1977 and found a place on a kibbutz, where he shared a room with two other men, worked in an orchard for half of every day and studied for the rest.

When he returned to LA, he majored in religion and had dreams of returning to Israel with his wife.

“I thought it was the ideal life for me, living on a kibbutz, being a rabbi and then being part of a platoon in the Israeli military every summer. I had been accepted into the officer’s program, but my marriage fell apart, so I stayed in America and completed five years of rabbinical school there,” he says.

Rabbi Finely completed a doctorate in religion and social ethics at the University of Southern California and finished his dissertation while working with his first congregation, where he met his second wife, Meirav.

They went on to found Ohr HaTorah Synagogue in Los Angeles, which is still going strong 27 years later.

Rabbi Finley has become renowned worldwide for his unique ways of connecting with people and integrating

the extensive teachings he has learned into practical ways for people to embrace and implement. In 2016, he decided to pare back his commitments to include three pillars – his congregation, his writing and his work counselling, particularly with a rehab centre with alcoholics and those with drug addictions.

But an email out of the blue from Beautiful Minds, which was founded on the Sunshine Coast by Marina Passalaris 17 years ago, instantly swayed him to commit to a new project.

Beautiful Minds is now one of Australia’s leading brands in mental health strengthening. The world-leading coaches, such as Rabbi Finley, give children a toolkit to deal with overwhelm, which often leads to PTSD and trauma.

With the world dealing with so much uncertainty lately, Rabbi Finley says you need to start looking at self-care as a duty, because without taking care of your own health and mental wellbeing, you are not able to help others around you.

“Although self-care is not a moral commitment, I don’t think we can fulfil our moral commitments if we don’t engage in serious self-care.

“Many of our relationships are built on habits and patterns that are based on decisions made a decade or two ago, that we no longer question because it works.

“Now, there’s something new happening and you don’t have the wisdom of the family culture helping you because we’re in a new situation. So that’s why there’s a lot of reassessment.

“People need to have the will to always be evaluating and checking in with other people. By doing this, you can revaluate how you are showing up, how present you are being with others and adjusting where you need to.”

ANNIE’S CAULIFLOWER AND BLUE CHEESE SOUP Reader Annie loves to cook. In fact, she has shared four recipes with us! Here is her winter favourite – a deliciously creamy cauliflower soup.

INGREDIENTS • 3 to 4 large sage leaves (or 1 tsp dried sage) • 2 leeks • 1 onion • Butter • 1 large cauliflower • 2 medium potatoes

• Cooking salt • Approximately 1 litre chicken stock • 190g packet gorgonzola (dolce or cremoso) • 150g (half round) Blue Castello cheese • ½ cup cream • Pepper to taste

METHOD

Finely chop sage leaves, slice leeks (just the white to light green bit) and peel and finely chop onion. Fry in butter over a medium heat until onion is translucent and starting to brown up. Place into a soup pot.

Chop up cauliflower, peel and chop potato into smallish pieces and place in soup pot with the onion, sage and leek, and a good pinch of cooking salt. Pour over enough chicken stock to completely cover and bring to the boil. Boil for a minute and then reduce to a low simmer for around 30 minutes.

Remove from heat and add chopped-up cheeses. Allow to sit for five minutes while cheese melts, then add the cream and a good grating of black pepper.

Blitz with a hand blender until smooth. Add a little more salt and pepper if required.

Our tip As a serving suggestion, top the plated soup with crispy bacon bits or freshly crumbled gorgonzola.

A simple coffee catch-up with friends has reminded Sami Muirhead of the importance of good conversation.

Print media has been dealt another blow, writes Candice Holznagel, which is why it’s more important than ever to support publications.

had coffee in an actual cafe with real-life adults. If I had written that sizzling opening line in 2019, I would have justifiably been fired by the fine people at this magazine! But nowadays, it is a big deal!

The three of us didn’t sit quietly or speak softly while we inhaled our caffeine.

We roared laughing for an hour and swapped stories. We ate cake that we didn’t have to cook or serve. It felt so very good ordering real coffee. And it totally filled my bucket to debrief on all that has gone on in the past few months.

I urge you all to do it immediately if only to unpack all the emotions of 2020. I learnt so many things drinking my coffee. I found out everyone felt afraid around Easter because of coronavirus. I listened as my friends told me how home schooling nearly broke them some days. I heard stories of other friend’s friends and their marital fights, their financial struggles, their health changes. The words were flying around the cafe so quickly and it was all music to my ears.

I visited India 20 years ago and went to the slums. The poverty upset me to the point I could not sleep for months. But in that depressing neighbourhood, the men would court their potential wives with the gift of conversation. They would sit around the fire pits at night and seduce the women with tales. They could not afford flowers or dinner dates so the art of storytelling was

their gift to their ladies. And that is how I felt having coffee at Buderim.

We swapped tales and it was good to hear all this raw and honest chat as one can go down that rabbit hold of social media and think everyone’s life is perfect. I love a friend even more when they are vulnerable.

But the funniest stories from my mum friends came from kids and other families. I heard of the 14- year old son whose family lives interstate – he took a photo of himself and then somehow froze it on his computer screen so the teacher thought he

Then I heard the story of a seven-yearold who started to do a stilted robot dance in a Zoom session and said with a broken voice: “We have bad internet today as there are really strong winds.” And then simply hit ‘leave meeting’ and logged out for the day and played cricket in the backyard.

uly marks 12 years since I said goodbye to the newsroom at the Sunshine Coast Daily. I enjoyed four rewarding yet busy years as a journalist for the then-owned APN publication. But I had become acutely aware of a change and sensed it was time to go. Four of us resigned in the same week.

Soon the redundancies began.

It was the first time I’d witnessed such brutal cuts within a media organisation. It was confronting, and murmurs about the future of print circulated. It was worrying, but in 2010 I found myself heading up news meetings, this time under the News Corp banner.

Ten months later our entire branch, around 25 people, were made redundant.

I’ll never forget watching tears flow from my colleagues as the dreaded envelopes were dished out from a big brown box.

Newspapers are in your blood – ink flows deep in your veins. It is an unquenchable thirst; a desire to tell the story. There is a connection unlike any other that you share with your peers, built on the understanding that news is a lifeblood. Resources are limited, the hours are long and the demands never-ending.

True news hounds know what it’s like to work 50 hours a week with no additional pay. We know the feeling of holding back tears, and the responsibility as you pen someone’s heartbreaking story.

Sadly somewhere along the way, these

traits diminished. Editorial space made way for more advertising, and journalists were told to focus on digital numbers and click rates as opposed to writing quality, factual content.

In turn, readership decreased. Industry leaders claim it’s because people crave more news, faster. This may be true, but the limitations and demands placed on journalists affected content, which has also played a big part.

Last week News Corp announced it is shutting down print on more than 100 newspaper titles across the nation. Some of these mastheads are disappearing completely. Don’t kid yourself, the impact will be felt by many. There are going to be job losses – years of talent lost. We will say goodbye to long-form journalism in many regions, and then there are thousands of faithful readers who are left reeling.

Digital journalism is the way of the future, yes. But, print also deserves a place in our community. In the coming weeks and months, as an independently-owned magazine, we will be investing more into journalism and news. We will continue to support the Coast and provide more news and lifestyle content to our readers. The decision by News Corp does signal change, but we will continue to provide free printed content. Now is the time for businesses and the community to support local print publications. Let’s not lose such a vital part of Australia’s workforce, and history.

Mooloolaba to Maroochydore cycleway Stage 6 - Mary Street at Alexandra Headland to Sixth Avenue at Maroochydore Consultation has been extended until 31 July 2020!

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) are partnering to deliver the M2M cycleway. A separated cycleway will reduce the need for interaction between motorists and people riding bikes on roads and between active transport users and pedestrians on existing footpaths. The separation will improve safety, comfort and travel time for all users.

Initial consultation on the M2M cycleway project was held late last year. The feedback received has been used to inform the planning and develop a preferred option for Stage 6.

TMR is committed to genuine consultation and encourages all stakeholders and community members to have their say on the project. The preferred option will be open for feedback from Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020. TMR will consider the feedback received and use it to inform the final design.
