MIRACLE PM HAS THE CHANCE FOR RESURRECTION Scott Morrison has had a turbulent year since his election win 12 months ago, but the coronavirus crisis has handed him a rare chance to reshape the nation. WORDS: Katina Curtis, AAP senior political writer.

S

tanding in front of a massive Australian flag in a hotel ballroom, Scott Morrison declared his surprise election victory a miracle.

The next day, newspaper headlines anointed him the “messiah from the Shire”.

The man of faith had always believed victory was possible, even when those around him wavered.

The May 18, 2019 election win handed Morrison an opportunity to stamp his authority on the government that no prime minister had had for a decade.

Now, the twin crises wrought by the coronavirus have handed him an even bigger opportunity to reshape the nation’s economy. One criticism levelled at Mr Morrison over the past year has been his lack of agenda. The income tax cuts that were his top priority were passed in parliament’s first few days. They were the centrepiece of the 2019/20 budget – along with the now jettisoned surplus – but built on cuts offered the previous year when Mr Morrison was treasurer and Malcolm Turnbull prime minister. The rest of the

priorities he outlined shortly after the election read like the Liberals’ greatest hits for decades – industrial relations, growing jobs, deregulation, increasing competition.

He chalked up a win at the G20 on moves towards action against social media enabling violent extremism, amplifying New Zealand’s voice after the horrific shootings in Christchurch perpetrated by an Australian right-wing terrorist.

While in Osaka for that meeting, he dined with Donald Trump. The president who loves a come-from-behind winner heartily congratulated Mr Morrison on his election victory. Later in the year, at the G7 summit in France where the Prime Minister was invited as a special participant, Mr Trump jokingly announced him to other leaders as “the King of Australia”.

The mateship strengthened with a state visit to the White House in September.

Mr Morrison returned from America with more than a model ship and a Tiffany bowl in his luggage. Opponents highlight his slipperiness with the truth and smirking evasiveness when faced with questions he doesn’t want to answer. This came to a head with his handling of the bushfire crisis over summer.

There was the hidden Hawaiian holiday, the slick Liberal Party video lauding the rollout of Defence personnel and the infamous visit to destroyed New South Wales towns where he was heckled by locals. He appeared determined to learn from his mistakes when the coronavirus crisis hit, gathering expert advice, acting decisively and collaborating with premiers.

A leader’s popularity always skyrockets in a crisis, but Mr Morrison’s resurrection stands out on a global scale. If he sustains this while navigating the diabolical exit from the health and economic crises Australia now faces, that might prove the real miracle of his prime ministership.

Shining a light May is Domestic and Family Violence Protection Month in Queensland.

It’s a time when the whole community can reflect on and help victims of family violence and abuse. WORDS: My Weekly Preview with AAP.

hen Australia went into COVID-19 lockdown just as Wuhan was emerging from it, domestic violence advocates warned the spike in incidents seen in the Chinese city were bound to happen here.

With calls to support services at an all-time high, it appears cases of domestic and family violence have escalated. Youth mental health service Kids Helpline recorded a 43 per cent increase in emergency ‘duty of care’ interventions in the first four months of 2020, particularly for young people in the eastern states of Australia. Counsellors are having to call emergency or youth protective services to help young people struggling with suicidal concerns or child abuse.

The team behind Australia’s leading child protection advocate Bravehearts has also warned vulnerable children and young people are at significantly greater risk of harm. Bravehearts executive director Hetty Johnston says, “Currently, one child is murdered every 19 days by a parent, one woman every week by her partner, and too many men are committing suicide largely due to their inability to see their children and their feelings of loss of control.

“Calls to our national support line have almost doubled. Increasingly and alarmingly, the calls are from parents who are concerned they cannot exit domestic violence situations due to the changes in their financial standing, that are now trapped in a home with their perpetrator and with potentially no access to their support networks.

“Others are reaching out, concerned about the existing access an alleged sex offender has to their children, their ability to enforce contact orders, and simply trying to keep their children safe.”

Earlier this month, which is recognised as Domestic and Family Violence Protection Month, the Federal Government announced the rollout of extra measures to ensure people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence know where to get help during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Help is Here campaign has two clear messages – help is available and tough

times do not excuse tougher times at home.

“For many weeks, Australians have been heeding the government’s call to stay at home to control the spread of COVID-19.

However, for many… home is not a safe place to be,” Minister for Women Marise Payne says. “We want all Australians to know, including those at risk of using violence, there is free and confidential help available at all hours, every day. Support and advice is also available for family and friends of those experiencing domestic violence and abuse.”

“My stepfather was the perfect dad. He always played with us, took us to the park. I remember him always being super-present in my life. He came into our lives when I was four and married my mum when I was six. He was like my go-to person if I was ever feeling sad or needed help. I needed to seek his approval to feel loved and beautiful and everything a young girl wants to feel.

Everyone thought he was such a kind, loving person. I felt loved by him and always wanted to make him proud of me.

“The grooming process started in Year six, when he started to isolate me from friends and family members. It just started so small. He would touch me on my ribs, almost like an accident. Then it progressed.

I never realised it was abuse. He began raping me when I was 13 at least twice a week for two years. Every time it occurred, I just froze. When you’re being abused, sometimes you try and scream or yell for help and no sound comes out.

I never told any friends because I was embarrassed and I didn’t want my family to break up. The abuse came out in October 2015. I had been to a festival and came home with a hickey on my neck. I was myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY sitting on the end of the bed, Mum was on the right side and he was on the left side. They were so disappointed and they were taking every privilege away from me. I was supposed to be going to school camp the next day and he was taking that away from me, so I blurted out, ‘it’s nothing worse than you’ve done to me’.

Mum looked like she’d seen a ghost. He was shaking his head and saying ‘what are you talking about, you’re lying’. Mum was in shock, like anyone would be. I was in shock and confused.

Mum believed me straight away and kicked him out. I can’t imagine what’s it like to finally speak up and not be believed.

I went on camp and never saw him again until court. On the night when I came back, Mum asked me questions and I felt horrible because it was her husband of 10 years. Also, I was young and it’s really gross to talk about. Now when I talk about it, it’s horrific and sad, but at that time I was mostly embarrassed. I started writing down in a book all the things he did to me and Mum read it.

We went to the police and I used that book to help me talk about what happened.

The court case went from when he was arrested in November 2015 to the end of 2018, when I was doing Year 12. I had to watch four hours of myself on evidence tapes explaining what happened. He was charged with 28 offences.

He pleaded guilty to 20 offences and he was sentenced to 17 years in prison, 11.5 years non-parole. My whole family was at the sentencing, including my grandad and my aunty.

Having them hearing that and him being on the other side of the room was one of the most confronting days of my life. My family were so supportive and he had to stand up and say ‘guilty’.

I probably only went to school 50 per cent of the time in Year 12. My life was just a blur. I was never myself and I was so sick of feeling like I never enjoyed life – I always wore a fake smile.

Sometimes I was so depressed, I couldn’t get out of bed. I felt extremely different and like I’d never be normal. After I graduated from Year 12, I decided to overdose and wrote suicide letters to my family. I was taken to the mental health unit at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and it was so horrific being in there.

I was definitely at rock bottom. I decided I wasn’t crazy and I had to pull myself out of it and get out of there. I realised the issue was so much

My legal studies teacher from Year 12 helped me come up with the idea of No More Fake Smiles, which I launched on September 5 last year. My mum Tracey Morris is the co-founder, and my godmother Katie Brown is on board, along with Danielle Johannes and Jeanette Allom-Hill.

My vision is to create a place where if you’re a victim of sexual abuse, you can truly be yourself again and get the resources you need. We advocate for the protection and respect of children who are victims or at risk of sexual abuse and for changes in our legal system. We’ve helped victims access equine therapy, transpersonal art therapy, yoga and psychology. A lot of teenagers contact me via our Instagram and Facebook pages and tell me about their experiences. Donations can be made on our website and all the money goes straight to helping the children. We don’t receive any funding and rely solely on donations from the public and business.

We’re currently helping 10 kids locally, paying for their therapy, which is why we need donations to our mental health care program. When I was being abused, I dreamt of having a place like this to go to. I don’t want anyone to suffer in silence. I want to remove the stigma around abuse and empower children to speak up. I’m hoping by me standing up and talking about it, kids won’t be embarrassed. I want them to know you can still have a life after it and achieve your own goals.

I’ve just turned 20 and I’m in my second year of studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast. I think when I graduate, I will go into psychology. But for now, I will continue my work with No More Fake Smiles.

We want to open a mental health retreat for child abuse victims and their families and I’ve been working on an education program.

I want to go into schools and talk, so that we get a lot more children coming forward.

While many businesses are suffering a downturn in sales, one Sunshine Coast business has dug deep to help locals in need. Coast manufacturer Quik Corp donated $5000 to Wishlist – the Coast’s hospital foundation. RECOVERED PATIENTS KEY IN FIGHTING VIRUS Scientists want to test the theory that T cell health is linked to how well patients are recovering from coronavirus. WORDS: AAP.

ust 50 Queenslanders could be the key to understanding how patients diagnosed with COVID-19 fight off the deadly virus.

Of the 1057 people who have tested positive (as of Monday), six have died and almost all have recovered.

Now, Queensland researchers hope blood samples from those who are back on their feet could unlock a way to fight the illness.

Identifying how their immune systems responded would help scientists get a step closer to a T cell immunotherapy, Dr Corey Smith, head of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute’s Translational and Human Immunology Group says.

“T cells – which are a type of immune or white blood cell – play a critical role in fighting diseases and infection,” Dr Smith says.

“We believe it’s likely that in patients who are getting less sick from COVID-19, it’s because their T cells are responding well and fighting this virus.

“But we need to test that theory in the laboratory and that’s why we need blood samples from recovered patients.

“We will grow their T cells in the lab and

screen them against the virus to see if they fight it.”

Once scientists understand how patients fought off the virus, they hope to develop immunotherapies against it.

“The aim would be to take T cells from donors who have recovered from COVID-19 and turbocharge those T cells in the laboratory to recognise and attack the virus.

We hope this approach could save the lives of the sickest patients.”

Dr Smith says the researchers are hopeful immunotherapy can be developed in six to eight months.

Meanwhile, the Australian Prime

Minister has ordered an urgent investigation into a coronavirus-linked illness suspected to have killed at least three children in the United States and one in France. The new syndrome is known as paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome or PIMS-TS. It is understood to be similar to Kawasaki disease, which affects between 200 and 300 children each year in Australia.

Deputy chief medical officer Paul Kelly says Australia has some of the world’s experts in Kawasaki disease and they will be advising the national cabinet, comprising the prime minister and state and territory leaders.

“So far there has not been a known increase in Kawasaki disease in Australia and no known cases of the new syndrome.”

Chief medical officer Brendan Murphy earlier told a parliamentary inquiry it was unlikely Australia would see a spike in cases of the mysterious disease.

“It may appear in other countries with large volumes of infected people but because it’s so rare, it’s unlikely to appear in Australia,” Professor Murphy said.

“We’ve got alerts on it and we’re clearly watching it.”

WHAT IS KAWASAKI DISEASE? • It is a rare inflammatory syndrome mainly affecting children under five.

• Australia records 200-300 cases per year.

• It can cause a dangerous inflammation of the coronary arteries, limiting blood flow to the heart, which may lead to an aneurysm, permanent damage and, in some cases, death.

• It’s cause is unknown but it is probable viruses and bacteria trigger the illness.

• It is not contagious.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? • A fever lasting five days or more.

• Extreme irritability, rash, joint pain.

• Large, swollen glands in the neck.

• Red or swollen hands, feet and tongue.

• Conjunctivitis or bloodshot eyes.

• Peeling skin on hands and feet.

TREATMENT • Hospitalisation with large doses of intravenous immunoglobulin, or antibodies, taken from donated blood which help the immune system. Low doses of aspirin.

WHY IS IT A BIG DEAL? • A coronavirus-linked illness has been detected among several nations with a high rate of coronavirus infections.

• It has similar symptoms to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

THE GIFT OF SOUND For many Sunshine Coast families with hearing impaired children, Hear and Say provides a lifeline of support. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

I

n those first precious moments as you hold your newborn child, it feels as though nothing can burst your bubble. Your heart swells at the thought of all the firsts to come – the first time they connect with your voice and turn to look into your eyes, the first time you hear ‘muma’ or ‘dada’.

But what if all of these special milestones were ripped away in an instant?

With a few spoken words: “I’m sorry, your baby has failed his hearing test”. Kate de Koning never thought twice about her son

“It was a major shock. We were devastated, especially when it comes to hearing. You don’t think about it. My pregnancy went fine. The birth went fine.”

Little Harry was diagnosed with moderate to severe hearing loss.“I think I went blank,’’ Mrs de Koning recalls. “I was with my mum at the time. I was in shock and then I broke down. All these things, what does this mean for the future for him?

How will he talk? How will he go to school?

You are talking to your newborn, and he can’t hear you.”

What ensued were months of specialist appointments, the use of hearing aids and finally the introduction of cochlear implants. “The hearing aids did provide some access to sound, but the implants are amazing,’’ Mrs de Koning says.

“He is doing really, really good. The surgery took four or five hours. After the operation he bounced back. The progress he has made in weeks is amazing. It took 10 days for the swelling to go down. Those 10 days were the hardest part... the cochlear implants could not be switched on [during

that time] so he had no hearing. That was a bit emotional.”

Understandably, it was also an emotional moment when the implants were finally activated. “It was a light bulb moment and so nice to see his face light up again. They have made a huge difference.

There is no comparison.”

Now, at 14 months of age, Harry is loving life and able to communicate more clearly each week thanks to the input from support service and charity Hear and Say. The team is responsible for adjusting Harry’s implants, providing him with access to more sounds and frequencies.

The family was first introduced to the centre when Harry was five months old.

During this time, the de Koning’s have had access to a range of social, therapy and support services. “We were so worried about the unknown, but we can go there for fortnightly therapy lessons,” says Mrs de Koning. “They give you ideas of what to do at home. There are playgrounds, meetings, support groups. You meet people who you can bounce things off.”

For 30 years Hear and Say has been supporting Queensland deaf children and their families and now the organisation is

calling on help from the community.

Coronavirus restrictions have forced the not-for-profit to cancel three annual fundraisers and transition its clinical services to an online telepractice where possible – both of which affect 75 per cent of its overall income.

In a bid to boost financial support, Hear and Say is hosting the inaugural Here to Stay Giving Day on May 28 to ensure the continued delivery of urgent specialist services to children in need.

CEO Chris McCarthy says although it has been challenging, the organisation is committed to continuing its support of families. “We know that children and babies with hearing loss cannot wait – every day without sound can limit their potential, particularly those early years while a child’s brain is still actively developing.”

The power of the mind Filmmaker James Colquhoun is back with a new series that challenges viewers to live a life less ordinary. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

J

ames Colquhoun believes we have the capacity to create heaven or hell on earth, just with our own minds. The Sunshine Coast filmmaker behind the successful Food Matters and Hungry for Change documentaries has turned his attention to the power of the mind in his

latest documentary series. Transcendence 2 – Live Life Beyond the Ordinary delves into the importance of clearing emotional and energetic blocks to heal your body and transcend limiting beliefs.

“The World Health Organisation says mental heath is going to be the biggest

challenge in our future,” Mr Colquhoun says. “We’re not really taught what to do, how to solve these issues. There are practices with science behind them that can reduce fear, depression, anxiety and overwhelm. Instead of funnelling your money into drugs, quick fixes and bandaids, you can adopt simple practices that take only a few minutes a day and you can radically transform your life.”

Mr Colquhoun created the series with his wife and co-director, Laurentine ten Bosch, who is currently living in Vanuatu with their two children, Hugo and Rangi.

Mr Colquhoun was on an international trip when coronavirus struck and was unable to return to Vanuatu. At the time of writing, he’s back on the Sunshine Coast, awaiting an opportunity to reunite with his family.

“In Vanuatu, the government has been handing out seeds and soil, which is so amazing,” he says. “It just goes to show the resilience of populations that are connected to food supply and community.

We’ve moved local support to a government level and it becomes a complex, less communal system. In that system, we start to see the breakdown of other things – mental health issues, physical health issues – because we’re feeling overall less connected to our food and to our community. But we’re starting to wake up.”

Mr Colquhoun says it’s been a natural progression from looking at physical health when Food Matters came out in 2008, to now looking at the power of the mind.

“With Food Matters, we were behind the core premise of you are what you eat,” he says. “Now in season two of Transcendence, we go into the concept of you are what you think. The quality of your life, your health, your relationship, your finances, is directly related to the quality of your thoughts. Your mind has a supreme capability to control the outcome of your life.”

The five-part docuseries shares tales of triumph, adversity and wisdom from visionaries and leaders such as Sir Ken Robinson, Reverend Michael Beckwirth, Vishen Lakhiani, Anthony William and Turia Pitt, a beacon of hope for many who have experienced extreme trauma.

There are some amazing stories in the series, such as people who have been in major car crashes or lost children and then experienced an awakening and found inner peace. But Mr Colquhoun says we don’t

• 2 tbsp butter • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 French shallots, finely chopped • 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves

METHOD Bring 5 litres of salted water to boil and place linguine into water to cook for 9 to 12 minutes.

In a large sauté pan, melt butter and heat olive oil over medium-high heat.

Saute shallots and thyme for three minutes or until shallots soften.

Add mushrooms. Increase heat to high and cook until mushrooms are caramelised.

Reduce heat to medium and add chicken stock, stir well and allow to

Rebecca Grisman has had the unusual opportunity to stay in a luxury retreat, and she’s making the most of it.

he binging continues in my little pocket of the world and I refer to food, wine and TV consumption.

Overconsumption!

My jeans officially no longer fit, so I did the only smart thing when you realise you have put on enough weight for your favourite wardrobe item to no longer do up around your stomach: I bought new ones in a bigger size. There is more than one way to skin a cat and going on a diet in winter during coronavirus has zero appeal to me. I figure I have another week or two of not flattening my curves before I finally decide to be more responsible and quit my corona cuisine carnival.

The thing with being responsible is that it’s hard. It takes discipline. And hunger pains. And no Twisties at night.

As for TV consumption, I’m a bit slow to the party – I’ve been watching The Last Dance on Netflix. It is the new docuseries about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The episodes have reignited the world’s obsession with all things Michael Jordan and there has been a spike in sales of vintage basketball merchandise since the series began streaming. I love the show and I’m in awe of the athlete and person Michael Jordan is. No wonder we all wanted to be Like Mike. It has also taken me back in time to the questionable fashion choices we all made in the ’80s and ’90s. Jordan boards a private jet in Chicago wearing a black beret in the series

and it sparked a resurgence in sales of the French hats. Crop tops are back again in another salute to the ’90s. Supermodel Cindy Crawford has kept her crop top from the ’90s and last week on social media posted a photograph of her looking amazing in it. She has somehow kept her washboard hard stomach. I wonder if she has been on a diet since the ’80s?

Watching Michael Jordan lace up his famous Air Jordan sneakers took me back to 1985 when I was grade eight with braces and frizzy hair. I would have killed for a pair of the Nikes. I never did get those sneakers as they were too expensive and my mum would lecture me that “you will be stabbed for your shoes by bad people” if you actually saved up enough to buy a pair. Apparently, that was happening in the United States. I don’t think the sleepy streets of Mooloolaba were playing host to thugs looking out for designer sneakers, but nothing could convince my mum otherwise. It is the fashion items you never had as a kid I think you remember most.

Crochet bikinis were on my wish list, because all the girls wore them. Esprit, Jag and Country Road were brands that were aspirational. I did eventually realise some fashion dreams when I invested in my first pair of Doc Martens and skinny volcanicwash, ankle-length jeans with a hot pink double belt. Those skinny jeans were remarkably smaller than the ones that are set to cover my post-COVID curves!

t was not just coronavirus that sent me running to the hills for self-isolation – my need for time out had been mounting for a long time before the world ground to a slow spin.

It was a coincidental opportunity that presented the chance – and that’s surely what life is all about.

For years I’ve worked with one of our region’s most highly awarded hotels. I have so many stunning photos of Spicers’ lush gardens, luxe nooks, talented chefs in gleaming kitchens and day spa sanctuary that I could write a book. When they told me they were closed to guests, and staff were redeployed to grounds-keeping because of restrictions, I offered to share all my images as posts and blogs online to keep their story fresh and remind past guests how special this resort really is.

In turn, they needed some caretaking – and so I moved into an empty hotel to ‘take care’ of us both.

Just imagine. When would the world pivot so dramatically that an often booked-out, five-star retreat would be closed, except to me? I can give only one other example that did not stop the whole world, but certainly mine. After 9/11 I was stranded in Ireland, jobless and poor. The very palatial Ashford Castle was near my family’s farm, usually an enclave for the rich and famous but decimated by the slump in American tourism. I booked into the only room I could afford, heavily

discounted, slept in an antique bed and I learned falconing – earning the trust of a huge and dangerous bird. It was my first insight into the world of luxury travel.

This past, blissful week I was sequestered in my Spicers Tamarind eco-cabin with a wood fire, cocoon bath overlooking a floral garden, a huge range of streaming choices, chef’s takeaway Thai food some nights, and my tree-surrounded deck that was frequented by birdlife and a ponderous possum. There were just two

I mostly did all this in my stylish Spicers bathrobe. I reset my inner clock and stopped looking at one. I was present and breathing deeply.

As the doors to our hotels reopen, I urge every Sunshine Coaster to make the most of the local stays we have to enjoy – they will need you and you deserve it.

Varicose veins and surface veins are a common problem in our community. As well as being unsightly, many sufferers complain of tired, swollen and aching legs.

In some people, varicose veins can cause profuse bleeding, blood clots or skin ulcers.

Dr Karl Schulze of Sunshine Vascular has treated thousands of local patients over more than 20 years. “Varicose veins and surface veins are common,” he says.

“The cause is primarily genetic. If someone else in your family had them, there’s a good chance you are predisposed to them as well.”

In general most surface veins (small calibre, blue or purple veins) can be treated satisfactorily with sclerotherapy (injections with saline using a very fine needle). This is performed in clinic with no downtime.

Costs vary on the number of veins treated but may be as low as a few hundred dollars.

Larger varicose veins are usually best treated with surgery.

The surgical treatment for varicose veins has evolved in recent years. Dr Schulze now performs many procedures using EVTA or thermal ablation. “This approach uses radio frequency energy to cause the feeding vein to constrict and ultimately block up. This stops the reverse flow of blood and reduces pressure on the varicose veins, which can be treated at the same time with very minor surgery,” Dr Schulze explains.

Undertaken as day case procedure in hospital, EVTA means patients are able to return to their normal activities sooner, and scarring is minimal as no large incisions or sutures are required.

EMERGING INTO A CHANGED WORLD It’s with a strange sense of fascination that I have been observing the events of the past week. Restrictions are slowly being lifted across the world. Gradually we see images of people carefully emerging from their rooms, their homes and their neighbourhoods into a ‘new normal’. Tip-toeing into a different

world to what we knew before, familiar yet changed. Things which once were ordinary, now stand apart. Like a caterpillar to a pupa and a pupa to a butterfly, we are navigating a social metamorphosis as we slowly surface from our cocoons.

Here at the Children’s and Teens Therapy Centre, transformation is not something unfamiliar to us. Our experienced therapists have witnessed many a client change from chrysalis into butterfly. We have journeyed with families through different phases and stages of their child’s development, continually adapting and adjusting to our client’s needs.

BACK TO ‘NORMAL’ Never before have we experienced such crazy times! It’s a phrase we have heard a lot these past months. Wow, I guess everyone wanted to come to the Coast last weekend?

And Nicklin Way traffic seems back to normal.

As for crowds in the line-up I must admit it seemed way over the top with a lot of aggression in the water. I even had a run-in myself with a very angry South African fellow who had a few marbles rolling around upstairs.

As I paddled away from the confrontation I thought there are always going to be more waves, but he is stuck with his demons.

Now, this weekend looks like there will be fantastic conditions. It might be good everywhere so enjoy.
