I don’t know about you, but I’m growing weary of reading some of the far-fetched claims and reports about the novel coronavirus.

The latest of course comes out of the United States, where a certain political leader thought it would be prudent to suggest that disinfectant injected into the body may help fight the virus. Unfortunately, this resulted in a number of ill-informed people ingesting harmful liquids.

In some cases, it can be easy to identify the false conspiracies or suggestions, but in others it can be a little more difficult. So, in a bid to break down these misconceptions, this week we chat with Australia’s muchloved scientist, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who

AS PEOPLE STAY HOME, EARTH TURNS WILDER AND CLEANER Pollution levels are falling, wildlife is getting bolder and asthmatics are breathing easier thanks to coronavirus lockdowns across the globe.

A

n unplanned grand experiment is changing Earth. As people across the globe stay home to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, the air has cleaned up, albeit temporarily. Smog stopped choking New Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world. Nitrogen dioxide pollution in the northeastern United States is down 30 per cent. Rome air pollution levels from mid-March to mid-April were down 49 per cent from a year ago.

Here at home, the stars seem more visible at night. People are also noticing animals in

places and at times they don’t usually. Coyotes have meandered along downtown Chicago’s Michigan Avenue and near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. A puma roamed the streets of Santiago, Chile. Goats took over a town in Wales. In India, already daring wildlife have become bolder with hungry monkeys entering homes and opening refrigerators to look for food.

When people stay home, Earth becomes cleaner and wilder.

“It is giving us this quite extraordinary insight into just how much of a mess we

humans are making of our beautiful planet,” says conservation scientist Stuart Pimm of Duke University.

“This is giving us an opportunity to magically see how much better it can be.”

Chris Field, director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, assembled scientists to assess the ecological changes happening with so much humanity housebound. Scientists, stuck at home like the rest of us, say they are eager to explore unexpected changes in weeds, insects, weather, noise and light pollution. Italy’s government is working on an expedition to explore sea changes from the lack of people.

“In many ways we kind of whacked the Earth system with a sledgehammer and now we see what Earth’s response is,” Mr Field says.

Researchers are tracking dramatic drops in traditional air pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide, smog and tiny particles. These types of pollution kill up to seven million people a year worldwide, according to Health Effects Institute president Dan Greenbaum.

The air from Boston to Washington is its cleanest since a NASA satellite started measuring nitrogen dioxide in 2005, says NASA atmospheric scientist Barry Lefer.

Compared with the previous five years, March air pollution is down 46 per cent in Paris, 35 per cent in Bengaluru, India, 38 per cent in Sydney, 29 per cent in Los Angeles and 26 per cent in Rio de Janeiro, NASA measurements show.

“We’re getting a glimpse of what might happen if we start switching to non-polluting cars,” Mr Lefer says.

Cleaner air has been most noticeable in India and China. Last month, residents of Jalandhar in north India woke up to a view not seen for decades: snow-capped Himalayan peaks more than 160 kilometres away.

Cleaner air means stronger lungs for asthmatics, especially children, says Dr Mary Prunicki, director of air pollution and health

research at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She notes early studies also link coronavirus severity to people with bad lungs and those in more polluted areas, though it’s too early to tell which factor is stronger.

The greenhouse gases that trap heat and cause climate change stay in the atmosphere for 100 years or more, so the pandemic shutdown is unlikely to affect global warming, says Breakthrough Institute climate scientist Zeke Hausfather. Carbon dioxide levels are still rising, but not as fast as last year.

Aerosol pollution, which doesn’t stay

“We’re getting a glimpse of what might happen if we start switching to non-polluting cars” airborne long, is also dropping. But aerosols cool the planet, so NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt is investigating whether their falling levels may be warming local temperatures for now.

Stanford’s Mr Field says he’s most intrigued by increased urban sightings of wildlife. Boar-like javelinas congregated outside an Arizona shopping centre. Even New York City birds seem hungrier and bolder.

In Adelaide, police shared a video of a kangaroo hopping around a mostly empty downtown, and a pack of jackals occupied an urban park in Tel Aviv, Israel.

We’re not being invaded. The wildlife has always been there, but many animals are shy, Duke’s Pimm says. They come out when humans stay home.

It appears there’s some silver lining for wildlife in what otherwise is a fairly catastrophic time for humans.

The truth is out there

Dr Karl dispels our coronavirus fears, myths, misconceptions and conspiracy theories. INTERVIEW: Leigh Robshaw.

A

t a time when accessing accurate, reliable information is crucial to the health and safety of our community, conspiracy theories, myths and misinformation are running rampant, spreading like wildfire on social media.

Facebook recently took the step of removing some of this misinformation and you may have seen the COVID-19 Information Centre alert pop up at the top of your Facebook feed, directing you to information from recognised health organisations. We asked Australia’s foremost science communicator, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, to debunk some of the conspiracy theories, myths and misconceptions currently circulating.

1. We should stop social distancing in order to speed up the development of herd immunity by having more people catch coronavirus.

A YouTube video featuring an interview with biostatistician Knut Wittkowski, formerly of The Rockefeller University, advocating this theory has been viewed more than 1.2 million times. Another YouTube video with two doctors from Bakersfield, California expressing the same idea received more than six million views and was shared by high-profile people such as Elon Musk on Twitter, before YouTube removed it for contradicting health authorities.

DR KARL: This is half right and it leaves half of it out. There are two ways to develop herd immunity. One is by being exposed to a disease and the other is by getting a vaccine. With the measles outbreak in Samoa last year, a hundred kids died of measles and everyone else had herd immunity, except the people related to the hundred dead babies. Sure, in the narrow sense, it’s right – but you also get a lot of dead people.

About five out of every 100 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 will go to hospital because they need a ventilator. It’s not like a CPAP machine; it needs skilled people to operate and there are not many of them around. If you have 100 people turning up and 100 ventilators, 50 will survive. If you have 10,000 turning up who need ventilators and only 100 ventilators, 50 will survive and 950 will be dead. So that’s 950 people who didn’t have to die.

You want the virus to dribble into the community at a slow rate until we get the vaccine. So what these people are saying is quite right, we can stop the quarantine and develop herd immunity. On the other hand, if you wait for the vaccine, all those people don’t have to die.

We’ve just had the world’s biggest quarantine ever, where over 50 million people got quarantined at over a dozen cities in China. That effectively stopped the spread of the virus, but is that really all there is to it? It seems to me there will be more. Two out of every 100 people go into a cytokine storm, which is where their immune system kills them. With a cytokine storm, you get generalised inflammation, organ failure and die. So long as those people exist, then the virus is still out there and as we don’t have a vaccine, or a drug or [enough] testing, we have to do this to have some degree of protection for those poor buggers.

2. Coronavirus will lead to mandated vaccination.

DR KARL: Good! And we should also have mandatory education, where people are taught to read and write. After what happened in Samoa, I’m amazed at people telling me the measles vaccine doesn’t work. We saw a hundred babies dying from measles. We didn’t see anyone dying from the measles vaccine. We are not seeing people dying from the adjuvants in vaccines. Apples contain cyanide. Have you ever eaten an apple? Big deal, you survived.

People benefit from the society they live in, so they have to pay a penalty. My freedom to wave my arms finishes when my arms get near your face. I can wave my arms all I like, but I can’t punch you in the face and I can’t pass a disease on that can myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY kill you. [Anti-vaxxers] are coasting on the people who have been vaccinated; in most cases they can get away with it, provided herd immunity is high enough.

The trouble with the coronavirus vaccine is first we have to develop it, test it on a small number of people, a medium number of people, then loads of people, then finally release it. The disease called AIDS killed 27 million people in the first 25 years. We’ve managed to stop it killing people by giving them drugs. Finally, we developed a vaccine and after three years we’ve found this vaccine doesn’t work.

The only way you work out if a vaccine works on something as complicated as humans is to try it.

Getting a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine could be anything from six months to three, four or five years. I’m leaning more towards the short end. We have to develop a proper test which we don’t have, develop a proper drug which we don’t have and a proper vaccine which we don’t have. The way we’ll do that is by throwing money at it.

3. Coronavirus is either a cover-up for the implementation of 5G or is caused by 5G. DR KARL: I’ve been following this all the way back from powerlines to the first generation of mobile phones to 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. In each case, people have claimed there’s a vast increase of cancer cases, for example. This could be a result of 5G, which hasn’t been studied yet because it hasn’t been around a long time. But maybe we’ll all wake up in the morning to discover bags of gold at the foot of our bed, which is just as likely. The towers people have been knocking down are the 3G and 4G towers – the 5G towers are tiny. The sad thing is, many people are out there protesting 5G and not wearing hats. They’re exposing themselves to definite cancer-causing radiation from sunlight, to protest against radiation.

4. 5G weakens the immune system and makes us more susceptible to the virus.

DR KARL: It’s entirely possible, but very

unlikely. Also, it could be the exact opposite and boost the immune system – show me the proof. At this stage, there is zero proof that 5G interacts in any way whatsoever with the immune system. The thing about 5G is it’s a higher frequency, which means we can transfer more data, but that means it penetrates less into the human body than 3G and 4G, which use lower frequencies. It’s the exact opposite of what people think. With 2G you can be underground in a parking lot and still get reception. It got a bit worse with each generation. The penetration is terrible. You can stop it with a brick wall. It’s hopeless; it’s only got a range of about 100 metres.

5. Coronavirus doesn’t exist and is all part of a plot by the evil overlord Bill Gates to rule the world or get us all microchipped or something.

DR KARL: That’s difficult to disprove – if you refuse to look at an electron micrograph and ignore the clever work the microbiologists have done in looking at this virus. The first thing is all the microbiologists and all the infectious disease officers would have to be wrong and the second question is: why? Is it because they’re too stupid, or they’ve been threatened or they are too evil? It’s just beyond comprehension.

6. Coronavirus is not as dangerous as the flu.

DR KARL: When people say the flu kills more people, they’re correct, but they’re looking at the total number of deaths in a year when the flu has swept through the community. What we’re looking at here is the early stages before coronavirus has ramped up. It’s like saying I’m going into the ocean and my head’s not wet, only my feet are wet.

That’s because you haven’t gone all the way in yet. The death rate for SARSCoV-2 is 10 to 100 in every 1000.

The death rate for the flu is one in 1000.

Because it’s early days, we haven’t got the full number of deaths for SARS-CoV-2 yet.

7) Coronavirus was created in a lab DR KARL: That’s easy. Did it come out of a lab? Maybe. Was it created in a lab? No. The RNA is only 30,000 rungs long. It’s quite short compared with human RNA, which is three billion, and every single bit of it has been mapped. At the moment there are two strains. There are minor variations. The reason there are minor variations is the RNA does not breed true; it makes mistakes. RNA viruses mutate much faster than DNA viruses. Is it mutating? No. We’ve only seen minor mutations. This virus, SARS-CoV-2, is 50 per cent identical to the MERS virus, which was in 2011. It is 75 per cent identical to the SARS virus of 2003.

When you look at the bits that are different, it’s exactly what you’d normally see when things mutate. Was it put together in a lab?

We don’t have the technology to do that yet.

Could it have come out of a lab? Sure. In Wuhan is a biosecurity lab level four – which is a very high-level laboratory – where they were researching coronavirus.

Shi Zhengli is the director of that laboratory.

She was testing coronaviruses and swears blind not one single coronavirus she has tested looks like the one that’s out there.

She says it did not come from her laboratory, it came from the wild.

8. We can’t trust the World Health Organisation.

DR KARL: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has a total budget of US$2.4 billion and their budget for this kind of emergency is $280 million. By contrast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US have a total budget of around $12.7 billion. What the WHO have been doing with their money is they’ve successfully wiped out smallpox and it’s the only organisation globally trying to wipe out polio and measles. In this case, they were a bit slow in calling it a pandemic, but it’s easier to be wise afterwards. This is not the time to withold funding from the WHO or undermine them, because they have lots of experience in dealing with emergencies worldwide.

Have they made mistakes? Of course they

have. Have they done good stuff? Yes.

9. My friends on Facebook and David Icke seem to know more about what’s going on than the world’s top medical experts. What’s up with that?

DR KARL: They haven’t heard of peer-reviewed science. It’s amazing the number of people in the population who think that a video is automatically correct.

Also, they haven’t been taught physiology, which is incredibly complicated. Most people have never studied the human DNA, physiology and immunology. They don’t know how to do science. Do they claim to know more than a plumber about plumbing? It’s like saying, “I’m not a car mechanic and I don’t need to pay $500 to maintain my car every year, all I have to do is put crystals and a pentagram on my car and it will keep working fine”.

10. The truth is being hidden: there is a cure for COVID-19 and it’s vitamin C! DR KARL: Vitamin C is a cure? It would be wonderful if it was; we have zero proof. They’re trying everything. At the moment what we’ve got is nothing. We have got one pathway into making a drug.

The drug will probably work on the spike protein, which is how the virus makes its way into the cell and travels to any cell in your body – lung cell, heart, liver, kidney.

The spike protein kisses up against the cell membrane and makes its way into your cells. One virus particle goes in, millions come out. At the University of Queensland, they’ve discovered a molecular clamp, a protein that grabs onto the spike protein, and stops it from changing shape and therefore it cannot get into your cells. Now of course, you’d like to think our government is funding that, but it’s funded by the Norwegians.

We need a drug like this and we’re spending a couple of million dollars, which is pathetic. What we’ve got to do is throw money at it in all sorts of different directions and something will pop up.

Unless we throw money at it, we’re not going to get it.

SOLID STRUCTURE IS KEY TO REMOTE LEARNING DURING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS Well-known child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg offers this advice to parents who suddenly find themselves in the role of teacher to their own children during the COVID-19 lockdown.

P

arents adjusting to their children doing school lessons at home during the coronavirus pandemic have been urged to provide a solid structure, so the young students don’t fall behind.

The advice comes from leading child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, who says daily schedules and allocated learning spaces free from distractions are two vital elements for keeping children on track during “remote learning”.

Dr Carr-Gregg is a child and adolescent psychologist for SchoolTV, a platform that provides expert advice to Australian parents and schools on issues ranging from cyber-safety and internet addiction to mental health, anxiety and other modern-day parenting issues.

He says a daily structure is important from a psychological point of view, no matter the age of the students.

Young people must also not be allowed to see remote learning as an “indefinite holiday”.

“The reality is that the coronavirus will turn many caregivers around the world into home schoolers and our young people will take their lead from us and we need to let them know that while we are taking coronavirus seriously, we are not panicking,” says Dr Carr-Gregg.

“While many young people have and will make a seamless transition to remote learning, some may struggle. So, acknowledging it is a stressful time for them and offering reassurance around ‘just doing their best’ is enormously helpful.”

The advice came as a SchoolTV survey of parents found that most were daunted by the prospect of their children doing remote learning at home and while the majority were confident their children would adapt to remote learning, many parents admitted they were still not fully prepared for the challenge.

transition to remote lessons is “daunting and unfamiliar”, Dr Carr-Gregg says parents and carers have a key role to play in lessening the impact of the education disruption.

He urges them to set aside a learning space in the family home and provide a daily schedule that includes time for lessons, lunches and even household chores, to ease the transition to a different learning environment.

Distractions can be reduced by banning social media during lesson times and parents can watch for signs of anxiety and depression and contact their doctor or school counsellor if they see problems arising.

“Some days will be easier than others,” Dr Carr-Gregg says.“Students accustomed to the school environment won’t be as focused, but we can do things to make them feel more secure, and make parents and caregivers feel they are making the most of this incredibly challenging time.

“So, allow for the fact that students will be holding a lot of tension around all these sudden and often stressful changes to their routine and may need time to adjust.

“With many parents also working from home, it is also an opportunity to spend some quality family time together.

“We just have to try to do our best,” Dr Carr-Gregg adds. “There is no map for this journey we are on but there will be plenty of opportunity to reflect and spend quality time as a family.”

6 tips TOP TIPS FOR MAKING REMOTE LEARNING WORK 1. Make a daily schedule, either using an online app or something as simple as pages in a binder. Fill in the time for lessons, leisure time and household chores.

2. Set up a learning space free of interruptions, and preferably not in a bedroom, which should be reserved for sleeping. Turn off and remove distracting mobile devices while lessons are in progress.

3. Encourage other interests, such as learning a musical instrument, to supplement lessons.

4. Reassure your children. While many will make a seamless transition to remote learning, some may struggle. Acknowledging it is a stressful time for them and offering reassurances around just doing their best is enormously helpful.

5. Prepare nutritional meals, including lunch and recess snacks, so children don’t graze all day.

6. Schedule outdoor activities such as walking, running and bike riding, ensuring “social distancing” does not become confused with “social isolation”.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Today Buderim may be one of the region’s most sought-after locations, thanks to its seaviews and valley panoramas, but what some residents don’t know is that it was once a thriving primary production area. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

W

ith its commanding views and coastal position, Buderim’s days as a primary production area were numbered long before many other areas of the Sunshine Coast, but there was a time when it was better known for farm produce than the upmarket homes lining its ridges.

And it wasn’t all that long ago, that the name of Buderim was confined to the plateau while its slopes remained heavily forested. Seaviews and the Bli Bli valley panorama backed by mountains saw to it that upmarket homes began to line the eastern and northern ridges in the latter half of the 20th century.

More recently, the opening of the Chancellor Park in the 1990s extended its southern boundaries, while development in Mons and Forest Glen has gradually pushed housing towards the west.

It was a different story though in around 1923, when the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau published its tourist guide Mountain and Seaside Resorts of Southern Queensland from Noosa to the Tweed.

While Buderim was “renowned for health and wealth” it was also recorded that while “all the orchardists who were queried expressed the opinion that only small acreage was necessary in that locality to enable a family man to make a fair living” the “surest future for the locality lay in the cultivation of citrus fruit and bananas.

“And as the wisdom of that decision was proven, those who held land subdivided their holdings and sold them in orchard lots to newcomers. Of late, as high a price as 150 per acre has been paid for

H.S. Guy, land specialist advertised to land seekers of the day that, “As a farmer I can recommend what properties I have for sale as good and cheap. All properties are personally inspected before my recommendation. Also can advise on the best methods of production on fruit growing.” It was a good time to buy.

Buderim properties have consistently held their value. Even 40 years ago, it was already known as the home of the wealthy and its streets limited to those who could afford to pay a premium price.

In fact, during the 1970s, it had such a high proportion of wealthy retirees that it was colloquially known as “heaven’s waiting room”. However, Buderim is believed to have taken its name from a coastal bottlebrush called Budderum or Badderam by the local Kabi Kabi tribe.

The phonetic pronunciation was spelt Buderim soon after the arrival of the first white settlers who came for the timber in the early 1870s.

Getting there wasn’t easy. Crosby Hill Road was formed in the early 20th century when timber was hauled up the slope to the Buderim sawmill. The coast connection to Mooloolaba caused grief in the 1970s when a landslip constantly broke the road surface as the steep slope broke away.

Early visitors were advised to travel by tram at a fare of two shillings each way.

The 1923 tourist guide advises “those who would see the orchards from which the popular Buderim oranges come must leave the North Coast Railway at Palmwoods and travel by the Maroochy Shire Council’s tramway to the fertile tableland on the top of Buderim Mountain situated at an elevation of 600ft.”

The tram service left Palmwoods daily at 11.30am, except Sunday, linking with the arrival of the Brisbane mail train. It arrived at the Buderim terminus about an hour later. Visitors would then stay in one of the many boarding houses. The journey was worth it. “Rippling creeks, newly won clearings, forest and glen, and then comes

the stiffest climb from which the finest scenic effects – heavily timbered precipices and palm-trees glades – are seen. Banana farms prosperously flourish on slopes towards the top, and a cultivated growth of unfamiliar character is interpreted as enterprise in coffee bean culture.”

It was an accurate interpretation.

Buderim coffee, grown by Ernest Burnett, won gold at an exhibition in London in 1899. “The broad, elevated plateau of the mountain top which was formerly held by a few pioneer selectors, now provides homes and incomes for a large number of fruit farmers and the whole settlement comprises what may best be described as an extensive fruit-producing village.”

Half a century later, Buderim had made a name for itself as the home of the southern hemisphere’s only ginger factory.

Today, it remains a prosperous hilltop village with some of the Coast’s finest homes, and a paradise for gardeners who have taken up the land that once produced some of the finest oranges around.

other’s Day will be extra special for many of us this year as corona has us savouring our special moments. With less white noise, our most valuable commodity (time) with loved ones seems to mean a whole lot more.

Today, I am sharing advice from all my friends’ mums. I may not be able to see my mum, who is 79 and self-isolating.

This breaks my heart because she is the matriarch of our family and a powerhouse of a woman. My mum raised three kids pretty much by herself. She taught us that blood is always thicker than water and to keep a secret stash of money (if my husband is reading this I don’t have one), which I have to this day. Happy mum’s day Mumsy – we will FaceTime you for lunch.

ur toes were dipped in the water on the weekend as the government lifted some of the restrictions on our activities, and I have never been more excited to be able to throw a rug out at Mary Cairncross and chill out with a picnic with my family.

Another cause of excitement was seeing more retail stores opening as shopping for non-essential items has been added to the list of acceptable activities. It is great to see the ‘Open’ signs thrown up and the lights switched on in the usual shopping strips.

The Sunshine Coast has the largest number of small- to medium-sized businesses per capita in the country. Some of the most skilled businesspeople have made a real difference to diversifying our economy and making sure us Coast residents are spoiled for choice in just about every product or service you could ever need to access. Now, it’s our turn to show them how much we value what they have created and what they offer us. It’s time to vote with your wallet.

If we can all do our part to check out local options before jumping online to shop from the ‘big guys’, we can make sure more of our Coast businesses are supported and possibly even thrive as they work through the challenges presented by COVID-19.

We have been doing what we can to support Sunshine Coast businesses in the

past few weeks. We have bought a few more takeaway lunches and dinners than we usually would. We ordered birthday gifts from small florists and boutique retailers who had online offerings, our way of helping small retailers weather the storm. We enlisted the help of some new service providers and have taken advantage of the amazing packages and deals Coast businesses are offering.

We even dabbled in a new isolation experience – an online beer degustation where hinterland produce and beer was

I would be extremely proud if we can come out of the other end of this season of change with a booming economy that has shown we can definitely support our own.

Child custody rights during COVID-19 What do you do in a contested proceeding when someone says “the kids are in lockdown and I am not sending the children”?

The Courts have made it very clear that they expect their Orders will be complied with notwithstanding the current concerns around COVID-19.

That is, as long as there are no safety issues, children should continue to spend time with each of their parents as ordered by the Court.

It is important to remember that the Courts make Orders that are deemed to be in the children’s best interest whether that be by virtue of a Judge making a determination after a hearing, in which findings are made, or, because the parents have reached a mutual consensus that they also consider this to be in the best interest of the children.

Accordingly, it stands to reason that unless there is a particular or unique issue that relates to a family or child, those arrangements should continue to the maximum extent possible.

There will be circumstances when it is difficult to comply with the Orders, and in those circumstances the Court expects the parties will attempt to negotiate a variation, and it is likely that variation would be a temporary variation to take into account the circumstances that make it difficult to comply.

Where a child is withheld without reasonable excuse, a parent could make an Application for an urgent Recovery Order that sees

the child returning to the parent’s home and continuing the ordered arrangements. These Applications are now being heard by phone and can be determined upon the Affidavit evidence filed by the parties.

ITALIAN AMARETTI BISCOTTI INGREDIENTS • 3 egg whites from large eggs • 3 cups (280g) ground almonds • 1½ cups (190g), minus 1 tbsp, caster sugar • ¼ tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp amaretto liqueur • Icing sugar

Who doesn’t love a good biscuit? This week our home cook competition continues with this delicious biscotti recipe from reader Lisa. What are you waiting for? Get baking!

METHOD Preheat the oven to 170°C. Line two baking trays with baking paper. In a mixer, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks. Fold in the ground almonds, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Slowly stir in the amaretto. Add just enough so the mixture is a thick paste that can be formed into a ball in your hand (it should still be very sticky though).

Place the remaining caster sugar and icing sugar for rolling on two separate plates. Using a teaspoon, scoop out a chunk of the mixture and roll it into a ball in your hands. Roll it in the caster sugar, then roll it in the icing sugar and place on the baking tray.

Repeat with the remaining dough. Leave a bit of space between the biscuits as they will expand slightly during cooking.

Use your finger to squash the biscuit balls a little, then place in the oven to cook for 15 minutes.

Take out of the oven, leave to cool for 5 minutes, then remove from the baking tray.

Going green: DRESS UP YOUR PATIO OR BALCONY Just because you don’t have a backyard doesn’t mean a garden is an impossibility. And with many of us spending more time at home, there has never been a better time to start one.

There are plenty of benefits to gardening, aside from being a fun hobby, according to environmental and psychology experts.

UNSW Built Environment associate professor and avid gardener Paul Osmond is just one person who spruiks the positives of going green.

“Part of the joy of interacting with a garden is maintaining it – watering it, composting it, harvesting it – through the entire cycle. But masses of work has been done relating to the importance of nature, or biophilia, to health.

“There are the basic health benefits of getting fresh air, getting your hands

dirty, interacting with plants and nature, which is a known way of relieving stress.

It also improves physical health if you’re outside, and you’re able to be active.”

Of course, with many of us spending more time at home due to self-isolation regulations, it’s also beneficial to celebrate nature. Fresh air is also important.

A nature deficit, Prof Osmond says, can be detrimental to our health and our immune system.

“In other words, we can suffer from having too little nature, too little exposure to the natural world. The ability to have that interaction with nature, in whatever way we can, is vital.

“It has been misinterpreted to suggest we should be completely indoors. It’s about physically distancing oneself from other people, but even if you’re completely isolated, you can go outdoors; you can go into your garden, you can go onto your balcony.”

Any space, even the size of a balcony, can be adequate for starting a garden.

Growing herbs, vegetables, even small fruit trees is possible.

“The avenues for species selection are pretty broad,’’ Prof Osmond says.

“You really can choose anything you like.

QUEENSLAND’S NEW RENTAL LAWS The state’s new rental legislation protects tenants who have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19.

T

he state’s leading real estate lobby group has backed a diluted version of Queensland Government legislation to protect tenants during the coronavirus crisis.

Housing Minister Mick De Brenni says the measures were introduced in state parliament in late April.

Under the revised proposals, tenants must be able to prove they have lost at least 25 per cent of their income, or that their rent exceeds 30 per cent of their income, to access COVID-19 rental relief measures.

A tenant will also not be able to break a tenancy agreement with limited fees without being able to prove a 75 per cent income loss of income.

The original legislative framework was widely denounced by the real estate sector, which said tenants – who could originally claim relief without proof – were being protected at the expense of landlords.

More than 400,000 letters of complaint were received by the Labor Government.

Mr De Brenni says the government has made changes that struck a balance between protecting the rights of landlords and tenants.

“Tenants and property owners in significant financial distress are also being supported through a $20 million rental grant package, announced with the framework over a week ago,” Mr De Brenni says.

Real Estate Institute of Queensland CEO Antonia Mercorella says her organisation is satisfied with the revised framework.

“It also ensures stability for the Queensland property market as well as for consumer confidence going forward,” she says.

“It provides both tenants and property owners with certainty and clarity surrounding the Prime Minister’s no eviction moratorium.

“The minimum income reduction threshold for tenants to meet before they qualify for the protection measures is in line with other jurisdictions [states and territories],” Ms Mercorella adds.

INSPECTIONS AND REPAIRS • Virtual rental inspections will be allowed.

• Access must be given for essential repairs and maintenance.

• Property owners will be prohibited from evicting a tenant if their lease expires. This freeze will be made retrospective to March 29.

BREAKING TENANCY AGREEMENTS • Tenants can break a lease with capped fees if they have lost 75 per cent of their income.

PROTECTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS • Victims of domestic violence will be able to end tenancies quickly, change locks without seeking approval and access bond.

• Tenants experiencing hardship and unable to access, or who are waiting for financial support, can receive up to $2000.

REAL ESTATE AGENTS ARE ADAPTING TO CHANGES In order to adjust to life under quarantine, many organisations and real estate agencies have shifted to remote solutions, such as working from home, video conferencing, virtual house tours, digital forms and more. One thing that’s extremely difficult to replicate using technology, however, is service. So, how can agents deliver the highest degree of customer service from 1.5 metres away?

Kul Singh, chief sales officer at REA Group, says the conditions created by isolation have given agents more time than ever to develop a more personal connection with prospective clients.

“Because they aren’t on the road driving from point A to point B, they’ve got more time to pick up the phone, contact a previous vendor or buyer and check in to see how they’re going,” he says. “There’s a lot more capacity and time in the day for them to be able to do that one-on-one engagement at the moment.”

REA and the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) have been running online webinars with real estate professionals, economists and other experts in their field to share some insights and shed light on the lesserknown facts of how the crisis relates to property, and Mr Singh says agents are effectively using that information to then engage with clients.

“They’re educating themselves and leveraging those insights to engage prospective buyers or sellers,” he explains. “If you’re informed on what’s taking place and can provide some new insights to the vendors or buyers, that’s what they’re looking for and appreciating.

“The property market’s still open for business. They’re just using digital channels now more than ever and it’s a good opportunity for real estate professionals to continue to evolve and adapt to how they engage.”
