As Queensland eases into slightly reduced pandemic restrictions, Sunshine Coast residents are being reminded of the importance of not becoming complacent in the face of the novel coronavirus.

Social media commentary and media reports reflect the nation’s waning patience with the restrictions, but now is not the time to drop the ball. Last week Australia’s chief medical officer Brendan Murphy told a senate inquiry that our nation is at a permanent risk of a second wave of coronavirus cases.

He said that authorities are keeping a close eye on Singapore, which initially tracked well but is now dealing with a surge in cases. Dr Murphy also reminded people

of the highly infectious nature of the virus.

So, with this in mind, this week we launch our 101 things to do in isolation series.

Each edition we will share fun, active and easy ways to pass the time over the coming months. We kick off with 20 ideas to get you started. Turn to page six.

Is a vaccine coming?

The question on everyone’s lips during World Immunisation Week was this: when will we get a coronavirus vaccine?

I

n the past two months, you’ve no doubt read a dizzying array of contradictory information about the development of a coronavirus vaccine and when this holy grail of modern medicine might become available. It could be December, but that’s a long shot. It could be 18 months, five years or longer.

Immunisation is recognised as one of the world’s most successful and costeffective health interventions. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that each year, immunisation prevents between two and three million deaths worldwide from vaccine-preventable diseases. It’s why World Immunisation Week (April 24 to 30) promoted the theme: vaccines work for all.

But developing a safe and effective vaccine is a lengthy and expensive process, especially when it comes to this particular virus, known in the medical world as SARS-CoV-2. That’s because the virus did not exist in humans before December 2019, so little is known about it. Also, the upper respiratory tract, which is the area of the body most affected by the virus, is a difficult area of the body to target with a vaccine.

More than 80 teams around the world are on the case and once a viable vaccine is developed, clinical testing and trials need to be done on a large number of people.

Sunshine Coast GP, researcher and lecturer, Dr Sam Manger, says it’s difficult to predict when the much-anticipated day will come. A clinical research fellow at the

SARS-CoV-1 outbreak, there was also a lot of interest in a vaccine, but this interest dwindled as the infection essentially disappeared, hence no need for a vaccine.

“It may be this current coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) does the same thing, but that is less likely as the numbers of cases is far higher and widespread than SARS-CoV-1 was, or that it regularly mutates enough that they need to develop annual vaccines for it, like they do for influenza, or that it becomes part of our regular environmental milieu of viral infections that currently

immune systems strong while we await a coronavirus vaccine.

“It is yet unclear if a successful coronavirus vaccine can or will be developed, as it depends not only on the science but also the future of coronavirus and many other socio-political factors,” says Dr Manger. “During past spreading infections, such as the 2002 to 2004

exists but stay relatively stable. In that case, a vaccine may be indicated if the infectivity and impact is severe enough to warrant a vaccine, and even these numbers are being debated by experts in the field.”

“However, making a vaccine can be difficult due to unique elements of coronavirus, and like the seasonal influenza vaccination it may only offer partial

protection. We simply do not know enough yet, and until we do, yes we should work to develop a vaccine to protect as many people as we can. But it could take 12 to 18 months, if not longer.”

But while the majority of the world is cheering on the scientists scrambling to develop a vaccine, some sections of the community reject vaccination altogether and are concerned a coronavirus vaccine would usher in a new era of mandated vaccination. Through Facebook live videos and other avenues, Dr Manger is communicating with anti-vaxxers in a respectful way that takes their concerns into account, while explaining the importance of vaccination. A father of two, he had his own concerns about vaccination when his children were born and delved into the anti-vaccination literature, emerging firmly of the opinion that vaccination is one of the greatest medical advances of our time.

“Scientists, doctors and nurses are often parents or uncles or aunts too, so quite frankly it is immature and insulting to accuse us of not caring about our families too,” he says.

“Anti-vaccine proponents commonly claim that hygiene and sanitation are the reasons vaccine-related disease has reduced, not vaccines, but this argument is so easily proven false,” Dr Manger says. “Of course, hygiene and sanitation advances in the past 100 years have led to myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY immeasurable benefit… but vaccines have also been a part of the success against infectious disease over the past 100 years.

“After each introduction of vaccine and widespread use, we have seen an enormous drop in the cases of these diseases, from polio in 1950s, measles in 1960s, haemophilus in the 1990s to meningococcal in the 2010s. Some have argued that mortality was already going down because of improvements in medical care, which is true, but the more accurate truth is that since vaccination both cases and mortality have plummeted, meaning less lives lost and we can use precious health resources for other non-vaccine-preventable diseases now. How is this not a good thing?

“Sadly, despite sometimes good intentions, I have seen anti-vaccine proponents intentionally or unintentionally misinterpreting and misrepresenting the evidence. There are real risks to vaccines, which have affected some and for that I genuinely empathise, but for the vast majority they are safe, effective and are clearly beneficial.

“The most common concerns I hear from anti-vaccine proponents is about the adjuvants in vaccines, not the vaccine itself.

Adjuvants are essentially components added to vaccines for various reasons, and the most common ones of concern are mercury, aluminium and formaldehyde.”

The additives in vaccines are used in such tiny amounts as to not warrant concern, according to Dr Manger. For example, apples and pears contain far more formaldehyde than vaccines – even the organic ones.

Vaccines are constantly being reviewed and refined, meaning we have far fewer adjuvants in vaccines than we did 30 years ago. “I do support free choice on whether to vaccinate or not, but that choice must be based on informed consent, that being making an independent decision having the full knowledge of the possible benefits and risks,” Dr Manger says.

“My fear is many are not being given all the information they feel they need to make a truly unbiased decision.”

AT A GLANCE Scientists around the world are working on developing a vaccine for COVID-19. The World Health Organisation believes this may be available within 18 months.

Getting the flu and COVID-19 at the same time would prove to be a deadly combination for many.

An extra 3.5 million doses of the flu vaccine are being made available this year.

Under the National Immunisation Program, those eligible for a free flu shot include people aged 65 years and over, most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who suffer from chronic conditions.

Immunisation prevents between two and

three million deaths worldwide from vaccine-preventable diseases.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET A FLU SHOT THIS YEAR Health Minister Greg Hunt announced an extra 3.5 million doses of the flu vaccine would be available this year, and if you’re not usually one to get a flu jab, you’ll want to.

Australia’s primary flu season lasts from April to October and Dr Sam Manger recommends it for three main reasons. “First, to reduce the risk of getting influenza and suffering or dying and giving it to others. In Australia, influenza on average causes 1500 to 3000 deaths… Secondly, having both coronavirus and influenza would be a deadly combination. Thirdly, the health system can become overloaded, meaning many who need care will not receive it – hence if we can reduce the load on the healthcare system, through vaccination, we should do so.

“All vaccines have varying degrees of effectiveness, meaning how well they provide immunity and for how long that immunity lasts.

The measles vaccine is extremely effective, providing approximately 95 per cent of those vaccinated with immunity which lasts for most, if not all, of life. The influenza vaccine only lasts for three to six months and offers less

protection with an approximate 50 per cent reduction in risk, so I won’t pretend it is a cure-all or perfect vaccine, but some protection is better than none.”

Some sections of the population have expressed concerns that getting a flu vaccine could weaken their immune system and make them more susceptible to becoming seriously ill if they get COVID-19, but is there any truth to this? “The influenza vaccine is not a live vaccine, meaning people are only receiving a part of it which then stimulates a specific branch of the immune system to create antibodies to those specific influenza viruses, like a type of memory,” Dr Manger says.

“Hence when you actually come across influenza, your immune system will fight it far more quickly and effectively and you may never notice any symptoms. So you cannot get the flu from it.

“However, about one to two per cent of people get flu-like symptoms lasting for a few days which is our own immune system creating those antibodies and memory. Severe reactions are rare, one in a million.”

JABBA JABBA PROGRAM RECOGNISED The Jabba Jabba Childhood Immunisation Program was recently recognised in the Queensland Health Awards for Excellence in Indigenous Leadership. An initiative of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, it provides immunisation for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. In the past 12 months, 548 vaccinations have been administered under the Jabba Jabba program.

Child health nurse Sarah Cooper has been working with Jabba Jabba since 2006, visiting the homes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to administer vaccinations and conduct health checks.

Based at Nambour hospital, she spends her week driving all over the Sunshine Coast, seeing at least 15 families per week. She says the biggest challenges for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in accessing vaccination and health care has been lack of transport and lack of cultural sensitivity.

“I think Jabba Jabba is a fantastic program and I can see it works well,” she says. “We’re working more on the terms of the family. Everything is based on a home visiting program, so we take all the vaccines with us. It’s much easier on the children as well. There’s less stress because they don’t have to drag the whole family out and it’s less traumatic than being in a strange environment. All the babies born on the Sunshine Coast that identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander are referred to the Nambour or Gympie Jabba Jabba team and they get to know us and trust us.”

Helpline calls rise Thousands of Queenslanders have been reaching out for help from online and phone counselling services.

ith positive coronavirus test results slowing in Queensland, of growing concern is now the number of people reaching out for help while the state is in lockdown.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says Lifeline, which assists

people experiencing a personal crisis, has received an “unprecedented” 24,000 calls a week in recent times.

Ms Palaszczuk committed $3.5 million in funding to assist Lifeline and a further $1 million to Legacy, which assists the families of those who have served with defence.

Lifeline recorded its highest monthly total of calls in the organisation’s 56-year history in March. “Many are facing circumstances they could never have envisaged they’d be in,” Lifeline executive Brent McCracken says.

“Many are feeling their life is becoming worthless.”

The coronavirus crisis has also put unprecedented pressure on Kids Helpline, which had 26,500 calls – which equates to about one a minute – in the first three weeks of April.

That was up 51 per cent on the same period last year.

Demand on Lifeline’s help line peaked on Good Friday when some 3200 people reached out for support.

Lifeline volunteers and staff answered 90,000 calls for help in March – the highest month tally ever recorded. That was up 25 per cent on a year ago, and meant that operators dealt with one call every 30 seconds.

Mr McCracken says Good Friday was “the biggest day in our history” as people marked Easter under onerous but necessary isolation rules.

“We saw people really struggling with loneliness, and the isolation, exacerbating the circumstances they’re in,” he says.

Asked who was reaching out for help, he simply said “everybody”.

“[People] losing their business, losing their job, finding themselves without other people around them, having a lack of social contact.

“Many are facing circumstances they could never have envisaged they would be in,” he adds. “Many are feeling their life is becoming worthless.”

They included people with chronic mental health issues exacerbated by the coronavirus crisis, but also a new group – people who’d never reached out for support before.

Young adults contacting Kids Helpline are struggling with the impact the COVID-19 lockdown and pandemic is having on their lives, says yourtown chief executive officer Tracy Adams.

“Our findings suggest that these young people may also have larger concerns about what this means for their future, for Australia or for the planet,” she says.

“We are also seeing some very vulnerable children and young people who are having to now deal with existing parental abuse and conflict during lockdown.”

NEW MAP WEBSITE SHOWS COVID-19 CASES IN QLD

DID YOU KNOW? While older age groups face the biggest health risks from the virus itself, and millennials and generation X are navigating the dual challenges of remote work and home-schooling, it is 18- to 24-year-olds who have reported the highest levels of stress in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is one of the preliminary findings from the COVID-19 Social Impact Report, released by impactmonitoring technology company Socialsuite. The report is based on data from more than 400 organisations across the globe who have signed up for their free COVID-19 Social Impact Assessment tool, which provides businesses with real-time insights into how their own stakeholders and other organisations around the world are handling the pandemic.

Two out of three people surveyed reported their stress levels at seven out of 10 or higher. Those aged 18 to 24 were more likely to report this stress rating, followed by 55- to 64-year-olds.

Respondents aged 35 to 54 were less likely to have a stress rating of seven or more.

For those people wanting to keep up to date with the latest coronavirus cases, the task just got easier with the Queensland Government’s new heat map website.

The heat map is a graphical representation of COVID-19 case data to give communities a glimpse of the location of cases in local government areas.

Developed by Queensland Health, the map highlights confirmed cases across the state and will be updated daily.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group chair Mark Jamieson says the heat map will give our community more clarity about local cases. “This heat map will be a single source of truth for all Queensland COVID-19 data and illustrates our regions hot spot locations,” he says.

“I would like to remind Sunshine Coast residents that restrictions including closure of beachside car parks remain in place until further notice to minimise the likelihood of people gathering at our beaches and coastal parks.

“It’s important that people continue to not congregate or crowd at popular local spots such as Happy Valley Park at Caloundra, Cotton Tree Park, La Balsa Park at Buddina, the Warana Beach picnic area and Tickle Park at Coolum.

“Our local authorities will be out and about to ensure people are complying with the rules – particularly around selfisolation, mass gatherings, non-essential business activity and private residence gatherings. The direction is clear: stay home unless you have an essential reason to leave. As I have said before, our community is doing an outstanding job complying with the national public health directions, but now is not the time to be pushing for reducing the restrictions that are in place to slow the spread.

“I want to say a big thank you to our community for continuing to do the right thing as we seek to manage our way through the implications of the pandemic.

THE HARD WORK BEGINS As eight new councillors and a new mayor take their positions at the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils, Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich looks to the future.

B

oth the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils have seen a turnover of around half the elected council representatives.

This provides both an opportunity, to benefit from new points of view, diverse backgrounds and fresh ideas; as well as a risk, given the benefit of consistent leadership and experience when tackling local government’s heavy responsibility.

The world we live in now is a very different place to when these candidates first nominated for their respective positions. And while many promises and commitments were made during the election campaign, it is clear the region’s priorities have changed significantly over the past month.

While the COVID-19 health crisis is being tackled head on, the impacts of the parallel economic crisis are only just emerging and will extend well beyond the lifespan of the virus.

New representatives will no doubt endure a heavy schedule of briefings in the coming weeks as they gain a better

understanding of council policies and procedures as well as their individual remit of responsibility as they head towards finalising budgets by mid-June.

There were many election promises made in regards to trust and transparency which can absolutely be pursued as well as council’s influence in guiding and shaping any future changes to planning schemes.

However, there were also promises made about reviewing and potentially unwinding past council decisions or even challenging those currently before the courts, such as the five-star Sekisui House resort in Yaroomba. We would assume that these briefings will also clarify what council decisions can legally be halted, unwound or overturned. Our understanding is that a decision made by a council and endorsed by a court determination cannot be overturned by a new council.

We implore councillors to focus on making our economy and communities stronger. Now is the time to reinforce and invest in local projects which engage local suppliers to inject much-needed funds into our battered economy and create jobs for our rate payers. Now is the time to focus on the already vulnerable young people in our community to avoid our youth unemployment rate becoming worse than it already is. And above all, now is the time to work collaboratively across local, state and federal governments and the business community to protect jobs, maintain investor confidence and drive local economic growth to safeguard the highly coveted lifestyle we enjoy.

BAD DEBTS AND DIVIDEND DOUBTS?

S

elf-directed investors have had a love affair with bank shares for decades. The consistently high dividend yield has proved irresistible to many and they consistently feature heavily in most self-managed superannuation funds. This may be tested in the next year or so with those dividends coming under increased pressure.

The economy has entered an extensive lockdown and our economists have raised their forecasts for a peak unemployment rate to 11 to 12 per cent. This is despite the significant stimulus packages from the government. This weaker outlook has led us to increase our forecasts for loan losses due to an increasing number of borrowers inability to repay their loans.

Overall, the changes amount to an increase in our bad and doubtful debt forecasts for the big four of 25 per cent, on average, for FY 2020, 87 per cent for FY 2021 (which we see as the peak loss year), and 68 per cent for FY 2022. This will lead to a subsequent impact on cash net profit.

Pressure on dividends has been exacerbated by the robust guidance provided by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) on how the industry should handle dividends and capital management in the current

environment. This banking and insurance watchdog envisages “prudent reductions in dividends” and a forward-looking approach that considers stress testing.

More pointedly, APRA expects authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs) will “seriously consider deferring decisions on the appropriate level of dividends until the outlook is clearer”.

If a board is confident in approving a dividend, then the dividend should be at a “materially reduced level” and offset to the extent possible through dividend reinvestment plans and/or other capital management initiatives.

Following APRA’s letter to banks, we

This will be the toughest test for the banks and their shareholders since the GFC and may lead some investors to reconsider their overweight exposures to the sector.

MOOLOOLABA UPGRADES

L

ocals and visitors alike will know the traffic headache of trying to get into the heart of Mooloolaba from Brisbane Road. To address the congestion, extensive roadworks are

underway and are set to continue until 2023. The Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade (MTCU) is a Sunshine Coast Council initiative to widen Brisbane Road and Walan Street to four traffic lanes.

Work began in February 2019. In addition to improving traffic flow, this project will enhance the southern entrance into Mooloolaba and create a corridor for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and public transport users.

Stage 1a was completed in October 2019 and included the extension of Naroo Court through to Muraban Street, with construction of a new roundabout.

Stage 1b has now started and is expected to be completed in late 2020.

This involves the widening of Walan Street between Venning Street and Smith Street to four traffic lanes and the installation of new additions such as pedestrian crossings, median strips and landscaping.

Stage 2 construction will run from 2021 and 2022 and will involve the Brisbane Road upgrade between 42 Brisbane Road and Kyamba Court.

Stage 3 (2022-2023) will upgrade the intersection between Brisbane Road, Walan Street and Hancock Street to four lanes and cycle lanes will be added. Stage 4 (2023) involves the upgrade of Brisbane Road between Bindaree Crescent and Culbara Street to four traffic lanes and connecting to Tuckers Creek Bridge.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING CONSTRUCTION Construction hours for stage 1b works will primarily be 7am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. Sunshine Coast Council will make every effort to minimise impacts to the local community during construction, however, throughout the construction period there will be: • changed traffic conditions – reduced speed limits, temporary lane closures, traffic and pedestrian realignments, traffic control, • permanent changes to on-street parking, • temporary and permanent changes to some driveways, • the use of machinery and increased heavy vehicle movements, and • construction noise (mitigation measures will be used).

All construction is weather and site conditions permitting.

COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS TO BE EASED THIS WEEKEND

A BIG LETDOWN This time spent at home has Sami Muirhead reminiscing about a much-anticipated trip that didn’t quite meet expectations.

amily picnics and weekend drives are back, and national parks will reopen from Saturday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says people can travel 50 kilometres from their residence to visit parks, have a picnic and jet ski. Shopping for non-essential items will also be permitted.

However, the premier warned that movement is “limited to members of your own household”.

“We will be able to lift some of the stay-at-home restrictions and... we really need the public to 100 per cent cooperate,” she said.

“If we do see mass gatherings, I will not hesitate to clamp back down.”

She said the 50-kilometre limit was to avoid large-scale movements of people between various regions, and borders would remain closed.

As of Sunday, Health Minister Steven Miles said there were just 98 active cases across the state with Queensland’s toll sitting at 1030.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young asked people in vulnerable categories, such as those over 65 years of age with existing ailments, to consider weekdays, rather than weekends, to get out of the house.

Deputy LNP opposition leader Tim

Mander said if the Labor Government wants to get the economy moving then, despite lifting stay-at-home restrictions, it should also reopen schools.

Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) wants Year 11 and 12 students to return amid COVID-19 restrictions so they’re not disadvantaged compared with their interstate counterparts.

Schools are open only for students of essential workers and vulnerable children until May 22 in Queensland. A decision on when they fully reopen will be made

by May 15.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews has warned fellow leaders to consider any changes. He points to countries that too eased restrictions and ended up with a second wave of infections. “We don’t want that here,” he said. “We don’t want to have a situation where our frustration gets the better of us and we give back all the gains that we have made.”

State and federal leaders had agreed to revisit the level of restrictions across Australia in mid-May. Meanwhile, politicians, business leaders and doctors are urging Australians to download the new COVIDSafe contact tracing app that will help health officials crack down on virus outbreaks. The federal government is aiming for more than 10 million people to use it.

I find Disneyland is as divisive as politics or religion.

You are a fan or you are not. Disneyland and Disney World have both closed indefinitely, to help stop the spread of coronavirus. The mega company has stood down 43,000 employees in the process but hopes every job will remain when this whole thing is over.

I have days where I think this COVID-19 thing is all a bit of a bad dream and other days where I feel quite calm. I have certainly never been more happy to live in our great nation where it seems (touch wood) we really are flattening the curve. That’s the flip side of flying halfway around the world in the airplane seat the size of a chicken coup. We are so far away geographically from other countries that hopefully it will help us now.

Disneyland and I have always had this love/hate relationship. I waited over four decades to go – 12 months ago I went for the first time with my then-seven-year-old daughter. I am fascinated with the world’s obsession with Disneyland and I felt quite dirty and angry forking out a large fortune to get inside the gates of the home to the world famous ride of It’s A Small World After All. A big letdown. We splashed cash on a Fast Pass so we would not have to wait in line but we still had to wait an hour-anda-half for each of the rides we selected.

I was gobsmacked how busy it was despite the near-freezing conditions and expense. It was in Paris and all I could think of was that we should be shacked up back in a cafe looking at the Eiffel Tower eating croissants. Or better still rambling the beautiful parks for free. Instead we were in mouse heaven. Or mouse hell.

That’s the thing with Disneyland: you believe in the magic of it or you do not. I do not. I gave in to my daughter’s begging for a set of Minnie Mouse ears on a headband. I should have kept what that cost me for a small down payment on her first car.

I grumbled with dissatisfaction when the bill came for the overpriced restaurant where we ate cheese that tasted like plastic, greasy hot chips and stale hotdogs from the buffet. But my little girl. She sighed. She swooned. She loved it.

Disneyland is a true test to our backgrounds. Nicola Sloane got to go to Disneyland when I was about eight years old. Nicola Sloane also got a Cabbage Patch kid doll AND a Strawberry Shortcake doll. I was so jealous of Nicola Sloane. She had straight hair and I had frizzy hair. She had a mum and a dad and my parents were divorced. Nicola got to go to Disneyland when I got to go to the local park. It took 40 years but I got there eventually and I am glad I can tick it off my bucket list with no desire to return ever again. The Happiest Place On Earth? I think we will all stay at home when lockdown is finally over.

COASTAL CARE To help protect our native wildlife, Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care and Noosa Council are again joining forces to control foxes in coastal bushland areas from Mudjimba to Peregian Springs.

The program is designed to reduce predation on vulnerable populations of native species such as vulnerable water mice, Eastern ground parrots, and endangered green and loggerhead turtles.

ALMOST RUNWAY READY It’s beginning to look a lot like a runway!

Sunshine Coast Airport’s new runway is nearing completion with lighting installed and line marking completed.

More than a metre of rain fell on the construction site between January and mid-March this year, delaying asphalt placement at a critical time in the project.

As a result, the new runway will be operational on June 14, 2020.

The Sunshine Coast Airport will play a critical role in the recovery of our region, post the COVID-19 pandemic.

FROM THE MAYOR Throughout the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, our Council and the local disaster management group that I chair have worked decisively to manage our region’s response and look after the interests of our residents and local businesses.

Council’s efforts have focussed on three priorities.

First and foremost, keeping our community safe – we have adjusted our services and access to our facilities in line with national public health directions to reduce the opportunities for transmissions.

Secondly, keeping the community informed, by making sure we are continuing to bring you the most up-to-date information.

Thirdly, looking after local jobs. To this end, our Council has prioritised paying Council contractors within seven days and has released two separate business support packages.

The road to recovery will not be easy, but by working together and complying with the health directions, we will have the best chance to come through this crisis and move forward.

SUPER-EASY CHOCOLATE CAKE INGREDIENTS • 1⅓ cups plain flour • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • ⅓ cup cocoa powder • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 cup buttermilk (normal milk is fine) • 2 eggs • 125g butter, melted, cooled • 1 tsp vanilla essence • Raspberries and strawberries for decorating

CHOCOLATE ICING • 1⅓ cups pure icing sugar • 1½ tbsp cocoa powder • 20g butter

“Ice the cake and decorate with berries”

METHOD Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a round cake pan.

Sift flour, bicarbonate of soda and cocoa powder into a bowl. Add sugar and stir.

Mix buttermilk, eggs, melted butter and vanilla in a jug.

Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour the milk mixture into it. Beat on a low speed until combined. Increase beater speed and continue for another three minutes.

Pour mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool.

Make the icing by combining the icing sugar with cocoa powder. Add the butter and beat until fluffy. Add more icing sugar and butter as needed.

taying in is a good opportunity for tackling DIY projects around the home, so we’ve chatted to some handy people to find out what you could do to fill the time by enhancing the look and value of your home.

Builder Amos Shirreff of Make Plans says one of the easiest ways, which is also often the most overlooked, is to start with a simple declutter.

Before “I’m often asked ‘how can I make this room bigger?’ (inferring which wall needs to be removed). I survey the room and notice it’s filled with clutter and massive pieces of furniture or dark painted walls and ceiling, which could be quickly and cheaply addressed to give a bigger sense of space without a sledge hammer or a structural engineer,” he says.

“I did this recently in my own home by

simply mounting the TV to the wall and getting rid of a bulky TV cabinet. It made a huge difference creating space with very little effort.”

Grant Smith, principal of Grant Smith Property, says it’s not always the large ticket items that add value. “It can be easy, cost-effective, cheap ways to add value and appeal while freshening up a property. Curb appearance is the strongest first impression.

“Opening up a clear access point to the front door is always inviting, trimming back overhanging trees or plants that have grown over the pavement will create more of a welcome. Pressure cleaning and some fresh new mulch are the two simplest ways to increase the appeal of your home,” Mr Smith says.

Katrina De Vere of De Vere Design Co agrees with a good clean-up followed by new paint if the walls are looking dull or paint is peeling.

“A fresh coat of paint in a neutral, crisp colour is a great way to freshen the interior or exterior. You can do as little as freshen up the front door (this is a good place to add a pop of colour) to a room or the whole home.

“Crisp white creates a blank canvas and opens a home up internally. In bedrooms, you can add colour. Half walls are fun and easy to achieve and can create a base to layer with styling,” Ms De Vere explains.

Meanwhile, Mr Shirreff makes the point of not “mistaking neutral for bland”.

And when it comes to DIY, Mr Sheriff warns “DIY might end up as DYI (do yourself in). If you are a terrible painter, don’t do it yourself. Pay a professional and get a professional result. If you are a jack of all trades and experienced tiler for

example, do your own tiling work but if you are a novice relying on YouTube tutorials and a prayer, perhaps hire a professional.”

Joinery expert Mark McAtamney of McAtamney Cabinets has been in business for four decades and agrees. He says people often opt for a kit kitchen or DIY plastering, then cringe at the thought of finishing it.

“Do your research and get a few quotes. While the idea of a pre-made kitchen sounds like it would save you money, people often overlook just how much work and skill is required to create a kitchen or bathroom yourself.

“A kit kitchen from Bunnings or IKEA can be more expensive than a custom kitchen as there are lots of unexpected tweaking and pieces needed to make it fit, not to mention the actual time needed to properly install.

“If it’s a fresh coat of paint to walls or swapping out old handles for new, jump right it, but a kitchen or bathroom isn’t something you want issues with a year down the track,” Mr McAtamney adds.

Updating simple aesthetics is also something Mr Smith recommends. “White sealant around the edges of vanities, shower bases and along wet areas and tiles can freshen up corners, making bathrooms and kitchens look fresh and

Often spending a little bit of money on your biggest investment can return the expense plus add additional value.”

And when it comes to outsourcing, the experts agree: get multiple quotes and do your due diligence. Mr Shirreff says, “In this time of uncertainty it is more important than ever to seek multiple quotes.”

Mr McAtamney says while most of their work is referral based, he advises “people should also check building licenses and inspect the tradesperson’s work where possible”. Ms De Vere adds, “Asking friends and family who they have used is also helpful if someone can recommend a trade that produced quality work. Always ask if it is possible to pop into a job they are currently working on or recently completed. This is a great comparison for work quality.”

Opportunity and good property is still attracting the attention of buyers in the market. While leading agents are still having to adapt to change, there is no doubt that SOLD stickers are still appearing across the Sunshine Coast. Recently, 20 Coolum View Terrace in Buderim was advertised in My Weekly Preview with a month-long campaign by Buderim agent Grant Smith, of Century 21 Grant Smith Property.

In the first week of marketing, agents were still able to do open homes, and 12 groups of buyers attended the first inspection. In the remaining three weeks the playing field had changed for agents – no open homes and no onsite auctions were allowed. Quick to adapt to change, Mr Smith revised the marketing to private viewings and an online Zoom auction.

In the remaining three weeks of the campaign, more than 20 buyers attended private inspections. Being marketed as the Ultimate Buderim Escarpment Project, buyers were quick to see opportunity – there is perhaps no better time to take on a project than now.

The auction attracted eight registered bidders in the lead-up, with an opening bid of $100,000. As buyers sat in their living rooms with a coffee and even in their pyjamas, Mr Smith was at his home office

Grant Smith is still selling despite restrictions with the auctioneer 15 kilometres away.

After an hour-long auction of live bids and negotiations with the highest bidder, the property was called on the market in front of the seven other bidders at $675,000 and sold.
