Far from home

He was in ICU and is now stable, but his mum died in the meantime and only her daughter-in-law could attend the funeral.

Imagining that scenario for my family scares me because there’s nothing I can do. I’m stranded in Australia, where I work and live, and there aren’t many flights back to Europe even if I were to try and leave.

So what are my options, really?

I find myself divided in two – it’s as if the Australian and Spanish parts of me were exact opposites but are now in the same situation.

The COVID-19 lockdowns have brought many families together, but closed boarders are keeping many more apart.

ith the country in partial lockdown, I’ve barely left my apartment for a month now.

However, with my family more than 15,000 kilometres away in Spain, I’ve felt as mentally quarantined as they are physically.

I count myself lucky, given my wife and I are healthy, employed and can rely on each other to lift spirits when a feeling of distance kicks in.

But it is hard.

It is hard to be exposed to breaking news all day, to then go into a night of calls with family and friends back home when they’ve just woken up.

It’s as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, watching on as they try to cope when about 18,000 people have died in Spain already.

Every time I wake up, I fear there will be a text saying a close relative has the

I want to leave and I want to stay.

They say you can reach Spain if you dig through the centre of the Earth and I think I could already be there if I had started weeks ago.

Distance is a heavy toll that is compounding with the virus. I notice all my migrant friends paying it one way or another.

I wanted to spend my 30th birthday in Spain in July and I don’t see that happening.

I’m hoping Australia reaches the other side of this crisis soon and I can hug friends and family and be back home for Christmas.

Healthy eating at home How many times in the past month have you found yourself staring blankly into the refrigerator? We don’t blame you. Self-isolation is tough. Throw in work, family and home responsibilities – and now, for many, home-school duties – and that block of chocolate or bottle of wine cooling on the rack sure can be tempting. However, health experts say now, more than ever, it’s important to stick to a good diet of fresh produce, meat, fish and grains.

t’s no secret that eating wholesome, nutritious food has endless benefits.

The vitamins and minerals in our foods are considered essential nutrients for good reason. Healthy, whole foods fuel our body – the cleaner we eat, the cleaner our insides are.

And, while bad health generally can’t be attributed to diet alone, optimal lifestyle choices will make a difference, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The AIHW reports that diseases associated with diet are also linked to environmental, behavioural, biological, societal and genetic factors.

However, through good eating, we supply required energy and nutrients for tissue maintenance, repair and growth.

The proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals required to maintain the human body in good health are met by eating a wide variety of nutritious foods, the agency states.

Leading Australian organisation The Heart Foundation backs the call, encouraging people to adopt and maintain a healthy diet amid these difficult times.

The foundation’s health strategy director Julie Anne Mitchell says one of the

best ways to stay healthy and support your immunity is eating the right mix of foods over the days, weeks and months ahead.

“From now on, many of us will be eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at home, so a bit of meal planning can minimise food wastage and help reduce cost. It’s also a great time to audit your pantry or freezer to use any foods you already have before they go out of date,” she says.

“We’re encouraging Aussies to adopt a heart healthy eating pattern by filling their plates with a good mix of vegies, fruits and wholegrains, together with some healthy proteins like fish, legumes or smaller amounts of lean chicken or eggs. If you’re choosing red meat, make it lean and have less than 350 grams a week.

“We may face many days in home isolation, so while buying fresh produce is great, frozen or canned vegetables, beans or fruits can be just as nutritious and store well for a long time.

“Shoppers buying any canned or packaged foods should turn the product over and read the nutrition label. It’s best to compare products in the same category and opt for those with lower sodium or added sugar levels.”

AUSTRALIA’S FOOD SUPPLY SECURE AMID VIRUS

THE HEART FOUNDATION’S FIVE HEARTY EATING TIPS FOR STAYING WELL PREPARE AHEAD, BUT DON’T HOARD Stocking up on a few extra staples is sensible, but there is no need to hoard as supermarkets will stay open during the COVID-19 lockdown. Plan your meals ahead and shop with a list to ensure you’re getting the right ingredients for a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals to minimise food wastage and cost.

SET ROUTINE MEALTIMES AND CUT THE COUCH SNACKING

Frozen vegies can be just as healthy as fresh options. Canned vegetables, beans and fruit have an extra-long shelf life, so they are perfect for your pantry. When choosing canned vegetables and legumes (like beans or lentils), buy no-added-salt, low-salt or reduced-salt versions and choose fruit that is canned in juice rather than syrup.

Now the couch and fridge are in easy reach, avoid snacking by establishing a mealtime routine to keep work and play separate. If you do snack, go for a handful of unsalted nuts, a cup of vegie sticks or a small plate of cut-up fruit to curb those afternoon cravings. Opt for this instead of unhealthy foods like chips, biscuits, cake, chocolate or flavoured sugary drinks. While these unhealthy snacks can be an occasional treat, try to avoid stocking them in your pantry in the first place.

CHOOSE HEART-HEALTHY PROTEINS

Heart-healthy proteins like fish or seafood are an excellent source of omega-3s, which our bodies need but cannot produce. If you can’t get fresh fish, choose canned salmon or tuna in spring water rather than salty brine. Or you can opt for lean chicken or eggs, but if choosing red meat, make sure it is lean and limit to a few meals a week.

Staying at home for long periods of time is the perfect opportunity to either learn to cook or brush up on your skills. FRESH, CANNED OR FROZEN – IT’S ABOUT THE MIX.

Australia has one of the world’s most secure food supplies, with ample stocks of safe and healthy produce primed to guide the nation through coronavirus.

The federal government’s agriculture forecaster, ABARES, has released a new report looking at farmers’ capacity in response to the global pandemic.

Australia produces much more food than it can consume, with 70 per cent of agricultural produce exported.

“The vast majority of our food is produced here in Australia, and domestic production more than meets our needs even during drought years,” the report says.

A little more than 10 per cent of domestically consumed food and beverages are imported to meet shoppers’ preferences.

“It is unlikely – but possible – that COVID-19 could disrupt these supply chains temporarily, resulting in inconvenience for some consumers,” the report found. “This would not threaten the food security of most Australians.”

Panic buying of some staple food items including pasta and rice have left supermarket shelves bare as concerns about the virus spread.

ABARES executive director Steve Hatfield-Dodds says coronavirus has taken Australia and the world by surprise.

“Coming after severe drought conditions in eastern Australia, concerns have been raised about Australian food security,” he says.

“These concerns are understandable, but misplaced.”

Beef and wheat are heavily export focused, while most fruit, vegetables, pork and poultry are sold domestically with an emphasis on supply of fresh produce.

Australia ranks in the top 10 per cent of countries under the global food security index defined by the World Food Summit.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says panic buying is not an indication of food shortages.

“Australia will always have enough food.

We produce far more food than we consume. COVID-19 does not change that.

“A surge in demand had an impact on the availability of some of our favourite products on supermarket shelves.

“Shoppers were stockpiling and supply chains had to adjust.”

He says the disruptions are abating.

The federal government has ensured agriculture is deemed an essential service during the virus-induced economic shutdown. There’s also been efforts to extend work visas and maintain supply lines.

The ABARES report found global supply chain disruptions had not yet had a widespread impact, but could hit profitability in coming months.

“While action is already in train to address key issues, it will be important for business and government to continue actively monitoring and managing these risks,” Dr Hatfield-Dodds says.

Anzac Day 2020 will be unlike any Australia has ever seen. But while gatherings and services have been cancelled, Australians are being called on to commemorate the day in other ways, and remember the Anzac spirit during these tough times. “It’s outside our control,” Mr Gardiner says. “A lot of us in the military know you have to improvise in line with prevailing conditions. We do what we have to do and we do what we can do.

“People will gather in their driveways and they are being encouraged to play The Last Post on their smartphones to commemorate it in that way.

“Sometimes we forget that our members have been in the military and it’s not always rosy in the military. You’ve had to put up with hardships over the years, and if any group is equipped to do it, we are.”

With Anzac Day ceremonies, services and parades cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RSL Queensland is calling on us to commemorate our servicemen and women with its Light up the Dawn initiative.

We are being encouraged to gather on our driveways at 6am with a candle for one minute of silence, to remember the fallen and all who have served their country. RSL Queensland will be live streaming a short commemorative service, comprising The Ode, The Last Post, a minute’s silence, Reveille and the national anthem.

For Maroochy RSL president, Michael Liddelow, forgoing the traditional Anzac

parades. Where we’re at is that we still need to commemorate it, but discreetly.

“There is a push to gather at the kerbside or in our driveways at about five minutes to six, take a candle out and observe one minute of silence at 6am.

“The Last Post may be played on local radio stations to add a bit of solemnity to the occasion.

“We can’t have any public gatherings at the cenotaph [at Cotton Tree] but if individuals in their own time would like to pay homage while they’re on their daily walks, they can do so as long as there are no gatherings.”

Mr Liddelow says Australians today are being called on to foster the Anzac spirit when it comes to the tough measures we are being asked to follow.

“Anzac Day is not just a date, but rather a spirit,” he says. “It’s a time to reflect on the qualities of past generations

Day commemorations is tough, but he and fellow servicemen are getting on with it.

“It is a very hard time for us in the veteran community, not being able to do what we usually do,” he says. “Our dawn service usually has between 3000 and 5000 people, we have the march, guest speakers, bands. But this year we can’t have any gatherings or the dawn service and

who displayed sacrifice, resilience, courage, resourcefulness and friendship.

Some of those qualities are coming through today in regards to the isolation we’re experiencing with COVID-19.

The president of Caloundra RSL Sub-Branch, Geoffrey Gardiner, says the dawn service at Kings Beach, which attracts around 5000 people each year, will not be going ahead, but it doesn’t mean this important day will be overlooked.

“On behalf of the sub-branch specifically, but also what we call the military family generally, and every other interested person, I will be laying a wreath at our cenotaph in our memorial gardens at the Caloundra RSL precinct. I’m doing that at an undisclosed time, because I don’t want people attending. I’m in the process of organising a bugler to play The Last Post and a camera person. I will be laying one, single wreath and there will also be a flag raising, but again, we are not disclosing the time.

“Anzac Day is far and away our biggest day on the commemorative calendar, the day we normally put all our resources into.

It’s a big day for veterans, a big day for serving members, a big day for those families of people who have served in any capacity.”

HOW WE WILL REMEMBER THE ANZACS THIS YEAR • Australians are being asked to commemorate Anzac Day at home by lighting a candle for fallen heroes on their front lawns, in their driveways or on their balconies or verandahs as the sun comes up.

• From 6am, a short closed commemorative service will be streamed from the Australian War Memorial on several stations comprising The Ode, The Last Post, a minute’s silence and Reveille.

• Links will be shared closer to the day so people can tune in on phones or tablets and free candle apps will be available to download.

• Families participating in the Light Up the Dawn campaign are also being encouraged to share mateship-themed video and image tributes on social media.

ONYX POPPY BOUTIQUE, CHANCELLOR PARK VILLAGE BOULEVARD, SIPPY DOWNS Michele O’Flanagan is the owner of Onyx Poppy clothing boutique in Chancellor Village. She has a loyal clientele, which continues to support her, but she has made a few changes to diversify and roll with the times.

“This has really affected me big time, as I’m not getting the walk-in trade I’d normally have, but I’m a very positive person,” she says.

“I’m a little bit fortunate in that I went online maybe four moths ago. I had a few items I thought I’d put online, so I have been frantically busy the last two weeks adding more items to my online store through Shopify. Now, virtually all my stock is online and I’m offering home delivery within a 10-kilometre radius of the shop.”

Mariska Iykannis and husband Emmanuel opened their stunning restaurant specialising in seafood and Greek food only six months ago, so the current situation has hit them hard. However, they’re still opening six days a week and the loyal clientele they have built quickly is continuing to support them. “It’s going okay,� says Mrs Iykannis. “It’s not doing the best, but we’re still doing takeaways and we’re getting there; it’s getting busier every week. The couple also has three children so Sunday is their only day with the kids. They’re juggling the business with the kids being at home with the help of Mrs Iykannis’ mum. “If we keep getting support, we should be okay to make it through and start back up,� she says. “People keep coming back because our food is amazing and everyone says it’s something different. It’s fresh seafood with a Greek influence and our most popular dishes are our seafood platter and our lobster mornay.�

Vincent Chua from IQ Shutters says his order bank is sustaining his business for the time being, but appointments are beginning to be cancelled and the new enquiry rate has dropped. Work on construction sites continues, but enquiries by people who would ordinarily be ordering plantation shutters and blinds for their homes has dropped off, as they are wary of tradespeople entering their home. “I think we’re only getting about 20 per cent of what we normally get, if we’re lucky,� Mr Chua says.

“While we are still sitting quite well currently, unless the enquiries and sales continue to come in, it will definitely affect our future turnover and profitability. That might happen by about May or so. “Compared to some other businesses, I think we’re doing reasonably well, but nobody can anticipate what’s going to happen in three or four weeks’ time. If we don’t get new contracts, we might be potentially hit quite badly.�

Mr Chua has been operating IQ Shutters for 10 years and says this is the biggest challenge he has faced. “It is so unpredictable and I don’t wish to speculate. The only difference is that I am a strong believer in Jesus Christ, so my faith is carrying me through and believing that God will come through one way or another. So far, he has proven himself to be faithful in providing the things we need.�

PLANS UNDERWAY TO TARGET DRIVE MARKETS POST COVID-19

Sunshine Coast tourism has been one of the industries hardest hit by the unprecedented lockdown, but local tourism operators are being encouraged to plan for better times ahead. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

OVID-19 has significantly affected the Coast’s tourism industry with some of our most popular attractions forced to close until restrictions are lifted, which may be for some time.

Despite this, Visit Sunshine Coast is working tirelessly to ensure the region will be ready to welcome visitors when the time is right.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the intrastate drive market, which consists of about three million people, will be an important group to help kick-start the region’s tourism industry.

“While there is no timeline as yet for an easing of travel restrictions by federal and state governments, it is likely that the Sunshine Coast’s primary target markets post-COVID-19 will be the intrastate drive market, as that is not restricted by state boundaries and there are over three million people living within a 300-kilometre radius.

“Down the track, we will target interstate markets, and a lot of that will also be the drive market, as air services might take longer to resume,” says Mr Latchford.

“While the focus right now is firmly on survival, we will continue to work behind the scenes on the next phase of recovery to support businesses moving forward, while simultaneously working on a multi-tiered campaign strategy so we are prepared to react immediately to the market when travel restrictions ease.”

Interstate visitors broke several records with a 29.2 per cent increase to 1.1 million tourists, with people from Sydney growing the most (up 43 per cent from 2018), closely followed by 36.8 per cent from New South Wales broadly. While it is impossible to separate the figures, the Brisbane/Gold Coast figures would be

A press release from Tourism Research Australia for the year ending December 2019 shows that Australians took 117.4 million overnight trips and spent $80.7 billion on overnight travel, up 12 per cent year on year.

Federal Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham says this latest data reinforces that tourism is a major

economic driver and the lifeblood of many communities around Australia.

“These are unparalleled times for our tourism industry and we shouldn’t underestimate the significant challenges tourism businesses across Australia are facing,” he says.

“That is why our government has taken significant steps to support businesses and jobs across the tourism sector to help them get through these incredibly tough times.”

Mr Birmingham says the government is continuing with the necessary planning to ensure that when all travel restrictions are eased, our tourism industry can recover as quickly as possible and continue to be a major contributor to our economy and employer of Australians.

Visit Sunshine Coast is also working on a major branding initiative that will be rolled out when market conditions are considered suitable to do so.

“We also continue to upgrade our digital platforms, and despite the lack of physical travel, we have continued to share inspirational destination imagery from across the Sunshine Coast on our social media pages to help plant the seed for future holiday plans, so when it is safe to travel again, the Sunshine Coast will be front of mind for visitors,” Mr Latchford says.

“This is complemented by our message to #VisitSunshineCoastLater.

“It is encouraging to see visitors backing the initiative and pledging to visit or return to the Sunshine Coast again when conditions improve.”

NEW COUNCILLORS JOIN INCUMBENTS AT SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL Mayor Mark Jamieson will complete another term as the mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council, with his win confirmed soon after the local government elections were held on Saturday, March 28.

After waiting for final numbers to be tallied, the Queensland Electoral Commission has now formally declared the names of our new and returning councillors. The new Sunshine Coast Council has retained half of its former councillors, with five new members joining the council.

In Division 1, Rick Baberowski was re-elected. Division 2 councillor and former deputy mayor Tim Dwyer did not recontest the election, opting for a change of career after 20 years as a local council representative. The councillor for Division 2 is now Terry Landsberg.

Peter Cox was re-elected in Division 3, while well-known Sunshine Coast identity and former Maroochy Shire Council mayor Joe Natoli ousted John Connolly to become the councillor for Division 4.

With long-time Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay stepping down, this division had 10 hopefuls vying for the job, which was won by Winston Johnston.

Christian Dickson was re-elected in Division 6, Ted Hungerford was re-elected in Division 7 and Jason O’Pray was re-elected in Division 8.

AUSSIES TURN TO THE KITCHEN TO KEEP BUSY A positive consequence of the coronavirus restrictions is that more families are baking to keep busy. WORDS: Emily Cosenza, AAP.

F

or stress relief, to fill time or to reconnect with family traditions, thousands of Australians are turning to home baking during the coronavirus pandemic.

One of those is Sabrina Fico, who is now using her time in self-isolation to carry on the Italian recipes of her grandmother Maria, who died in 2016.

Ms Fico went into quarantine with her

parents and two sisters some weeks ago and, as a result, is spending more time in the kitchen to keep occupied.

She says she is cooking and baking with her family twice a week because they have more time to make foods from scratch, including gnocchi, lasagne sheets and pizza, like Maria did.

“My nonna also used to make taralli [Italian savoury biscuits] and my mum

used to make them when she was little and it was something I’ve always wanted to do,” Miss Fico says. “Now we have the time to do it, learn more and practise.”

Charles Darwin University dietitian Judith Myers says amid the restrictions brought by the coronavirus pandemic, more families are looking for childfriendly activities while staying home.

She says it leads to more people combining cooking with family time, having a positive outcome amongst COVID-19’s negativity.

“Look for opportunities for families to cook meals together because that’s where kids learn about family traditions and culture and can connect,” she says.

“For many children, until now they haven’t necessarily been involved in learning about what those foods and traditions are.”

Not surprisingly, the return to more traditional activities also has a modern touch, with people turning to the internet in droves to source inspiration, recipes and cooking tips.

In the past 30 days, bread and cakes were the most popular Googled recipes nationally, while pancakes, banana bread, pasta and cookies are others to get big hits.

In the run-up to Easter, searches for hot cross buns also soared.

In recent weeks, damper has increased popularity in South Australia and Queensland.

For Hayley Murphy, banana bread has been a big hit. Since losing her job as a gymnastics coach, the 19-year-old has been baking every day to pass the time.

She says she has also sourced recipes for bliss balls and brownies online. “It’s definitely therapeutic and it takes a lot of stress out,” Miss Murphy says.

“I didn’t bake anywhere near as much as I am now.”

Visual discovery engine Pinterest has provided an insight into global micro-trends of quarantine life, and with families spending more time than ever in their homes, cooking has emerged as a popular search topic.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • Olive oil • 6 cloves garlic, sliced • 2 shallots, sliced in wedges • Red wine • Water or stock to loosen • 2 cups of leftover lamb shoulder, shredded into chunks • Favourite jar of pasta sauce • Pasta of choice • Fresh basil and rocket to finish • Parmesan cheese

METHOD Heat oil in a fry pan or saucepan with a lid. Fry garlic and shallots until lightly coloured, then add a good splash of red wine, or stock if preferred, and reduce by half. Add lamb, pasta sauce and half a jar of water. Simmer on low with the lid on for a least an hour for flavours to develop.

Stir occasionally. If sauce thickens too much, add extra stock or water to loosen when needed. Season to taste.

Cook pasta as per directions, then add into the sauce – do this gradually as you don’t want too much pasta and not enough sauce. If it’s too dry, add a spoon or two of the pasta water. Serve with fresh basil, rocket and parmesan cheese. Though my husband’s preferred style is “no green please, just parmesan cheese”.

This can be made stored in fridge for up to three days or frozen and reheated.

The program will be interactive and include a combination of online class work, group discussions and project-based activities to enhance the participants’ learning.

STEPS is opening up opportunities for external participants to engage with the service to inhibit the chances of regression or social isolation.

The application process is simple – students can choose the subjects they’d like to study and pay only for those either via their NDIS plans, or fee for service. Classes are starting next week via the Zoom platform, and STEPS will run three sessions a day from Monday to Friday.

Class sizes will be delivered at a level where all participants will have the opportunity of contributing and progressing at a similar pace.

As the world adapts to changes due to coronavirus, the STEPS Pathways College day program is moving to an online, interactive teaching mode to keep the college’s students connected and engaged.

The program is modelled on the current STEPS Pathways College curriculum. A modern facility dedicated to providing education and training for young people with a disability to reach their goals of living independently.

STEPS Pathways manager DJ McGlynn says the new online offering is for everyone, especially those in regional and remote areas across Australia.

“We are using this challenging time as a time to innovate and expand our reach,” he says. “We want all young people to feel like they’re connected and learning at the same time, so they continue to reach for their goals.

For attention difficulties, we use the Conners 3 screening tool that assesses for ADHD and similar diagnostic symptoms. Our psychologists also conduct adaptive behaviour assessments with parents and teachers. This provides insight into specific difficulties the child is experiencing in daily functioning, communication, and socialisation.

In addition, our speech therapists carry out speech and language assessments that provide more refined information about communication and language skills that are common in many children with autism.

Tele-therapy with our occupational therapists is also beneficial for targeting sensory-behaviour difficulties and motor control difficulties.

PLENTY OF EXCUSES

IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?

Go easy on yourself, and others, advises Sami Muirhead, who is enjoying her relaxation time during lockdown.

Rebecca Grisman writes that sometimes it feels like the end of the world as we know it, but she is soothed by the wise words of her son.

T

his isolation things is up and down, isn’t it? One minute I’m hugging my kids just loving the time together to really connect, and the next I’m hiding in my car to get five minutes of quiet time.

But there are a few things I think should be banned. One of those is #noexcuses. Old ’Rona and this lockdown has given rise to a hashtag that is usually posted by physically perfect specimens wearing a form of Lycra in which you can see two separate legs. In my exercise tights, my legs kind of melt into one big leg, as I am not sure when one thigh starts and one thigh stops. As a person who has spent the last month coming up with myriad excuses for not doing too much exercise, this #noexcuses bugs me.

It is a time to be kind to ourselves and I know we need to stay mentally healthy.

Therefore I have forced myself to walk the dogs and kids daily, but really I am most happy chowing down on blue cheese and biscuits while watching Gordon Ramsay shout at everyone for serving portions of pork that are too generous on the new series of MasterChef.

That is a crime Gordon Ramsay. There is no such thing in these times of anxiety as too big a serving of food. I am writing off our big servings of food in our house as comfort food and being proactive as we are surely building immunity and preparing for winter.

The #noexcuses hashtag is also getting a good run with overly enthusiastic people who are flaunting their DIY house projects during the lockdown. One friend showed her home after they had repainted it over the Easter long weekend. They also put in new floorboards, built a fire pit, extended the pool deck and made a new carport. Boo! I have been pretty much lying around in my undies, listening to Amy Shark on repeat and allowing my kids to have hot chips for lunch for the fourth day in a row. I am justifying my laziness as mental health days. Kmart has launched an expanded line of what it calls ‘lounge sets’. These are basically non-boganlooking tracksuits that you can hang out smugly in, looking like the Sunshine Coast version of the Kardashian family.

Genius really.

In other news, I have had a bit of extra time to ‘research’ while the kids eat their chips. Did you know Cameron Diaz had a baby a few months back? The 47-year-old had a girl (named Raddix) with her hubby Benji Madden.

Cam says she has retired from acting, which makes me sad because I spent my twenties and thirties laughing at all of her awesome movies. My dream day would be lolling around in a lounge set eating fried rice and watching There’s Something About Mary. #noexcuses.

he world is challenging and changing in unparalleled ways.

I have a knack for being in the right place at the wrong time – a Belfast airport bombing, tsunami in Indonesia, Europe during 9/11 and a new business during the GFC. Some COVID-19 scenarios feel familiar – the empty streets and contagious anxiety about stuff I cannot fathom or control.

There is also an odd calmness, though, perhaps because it’s affecting everyone.

I wanted to check in with my child about the pandemic and potentially scary global response, ready with reassuring answers, soothing philosophical sayings and practical ways to enjoy the unexpected time together to distract us both. I worried too much, turns out.

Unprompted, my 10-year-old asked how long this will last and if it may cause a change for the better? He reasoned that many generations before us likely felt the world was ending at times, facing war and famine, but it didn’t. He said that nobody prepares for evolution, it just happens.

He pointed out positive outcomes like having time to learn new skills and independence. He thinks our old dog is enjoying all the extra walks and, after all, may not have many years left. He said more strangers smile and say hello, albeit from a distance. He likes our new routines for mornings, tea breaks, astronomy viewings, swims and finally using his

Kindle instead of iPad. He volunteered to try our homegrown vegies that look weird.

He sat and hand wrote letters to family and a new pen pal his age in the US – just like I did as a child, because he has met that lifetime friend and thinks getting mail would be fun.

He Googled the word apocalypse, then asked me to watch suggested movies like The Matrix, Godzilla and 2012 with him. As the credits rolled, he said it’s not that bad for us, is it? My kid is no saint, but he knows how to reset my focus.

“Many generations before us likely felt the world was ending” Not everyone is dealing easily with isolation. We know we are all in it together but that does not necessarily help.

Resilience is a strength that’s learned and the more of us who can feel, demonstrate and offer it to others, the better for us all.

Just like us, our kids have not navigated this path before and their view of it is unique to them yet coloured by our own.

We can choose to make it a period they will remember for its good bits. Ever the music fan, my son suggested REM’s song for navigating this time – it may be the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine.

CASSANDRA SAYS Sometimes when you build a house, it is hard to understand how big a room will feel until it’s built and you have all of your furniture in it. Before you start a renovation, one big question is what type of furniture do you have in the room and is the furniture the problem or the room size the problem?

If you have a lot of extra furniture in the bedroom it might be worth thinking about reducing some before you go to the expense and mess of moving a wall. The other thing to consider is the colour of the room. If your walls are a dark colour it can

make the room feel smaller, so another idea before doing a renovation is to possibly paint all of the walls white. One of my favourite bright whites that can make a room look bigger and reflect light is Dulux Lexicon Quarter.

If you consider these options and still decide you need to make the room bigger, you need to find out if the wall you are

moving is load bearing. If you have building plans you could call the structural engineer, draftsman or architect who designed the home to check. If it is load bearing you will need them to design a solution, which may include additional beams or framework in the ceiling.

Flooring is also something to consider.

If you have polished timber floorboards it can be tricky because usually the wall is sitting over boards that have not been polished and you may need to sand and finish the whole room or even worse the whole house to get an even floor finish if moving a wall.

If you have carpet it can also be a little bit tricky because you will see a join line where the extra carpet is. The existing carpet could have also faded, which

Once you’ve decided on your flooring, you’ll have to demolish the existing wall, install a new wall in your preferred location and rectify the flooring. If you have power switches or water pipes in the wall you are moving you will need to

commission a plumber and/or electrician along with a carpenter, plasterer, painter and flooring trade to rebuild the wall and fix the ceiling and flooring.

Your carpenter will be the first trade on site and will demolish as much of the wall that he can and build the framework of the new wall. Then the electrician and/or plumber will remove or relocate the services if there are any in the existing wall.

Next is the plasterer to sheet the wall and ceiling and do the plaster work.

The carpenter and flooring trade will come back to install the flooring and skirting boards and then your plumber and/or electrician will need to fit off any fittings if you have plumbing or electrical works in the wall. Lastly you will need a painter to finish the wall and ceiling works, unless you would like to save some pennies and do it yourself.

For those who are midway through a renovation, it can be a little confusing when it comes to managing social restrictions and your project.

Leading platform for home renovation and design Houzz has collected insights from its community of home improvement professionals to see how they are helping homeowners progress with their project and, in turn, keeping local professionals in business.

Houzz Australia and New Zealand editor Vanessa Walker says many professionals are adapting to the new restrictions and environment by offering virtual consultations and 3D floor plans. “Those on site are taking all the necessary protective measures to keep homeowners and workers safe,” she adds.

Adaptable industries Here are Ms Walker’s renovation tips based on advice from the Houzz professional community.

• Set up a virtual consultation: Many pros have more time on their hands than they normally would — there are no commutes, site visits, show houses or markets keeping them from working on your project. Fill that time with a virtual consultation. You can answer their style and function questions, share inspiring photos and learn from them how to take accurate measurements without them needing to do it in person.

• Improve the most open areas: If social distancing will be difficult to maintain on site because of your home size, turn your attention to areas of the home where a breach of space is less likely, such as the backyard or exterior of the home. Consider commissioning a landscape architect or landscape designer to draw up a master plan for you now.

• Plan everything now: Houzz research indicates that for most homeowners (in fact, 65 per cent of them), the time between realising you need a renovation and actually executing it is usually six months or more.

Use some of this stuck-at-home time to save your inspiring photos and research home professionals, then reach out to start planning future projects.

• Write reviews: If you’re not ready to start a project right now, there are other ways to support the professionals in your community.

If a design or renovation pro on Houzz has improved your life in the past but you haven’t gotten around to writing them a glowing review, do it now — reviews are immensely helpful to a business.

• Follow local and national authorities: While construction may still be allowed in your area, it’s a good idea to continue following advice from local and national authorities to check which services are still permitted.

PROJECT 1 – HOW TO PAINT WOODEN FLOORS

With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can easily tackle these three renovation projects.

Painted wooden floors have had a resurgence in popularity in recent years. White and cream are particularly popular and create a neutral canvas to work with. Add a patterned floor rug or inject colour through furnishings to create a modern and fresh look.

STEP ONE Sandpaper the floor surface thoroughly.

STEP TWO Vacuum and then scrub the floor with a blend of water and detergent or wood cleaner to remove any stains or dust. You must let the floors dry before doing anything further. This can take up to a couple of days.

STEP THREE Apply a primer. Speak to a paint expert about which primer product will work best for your floors. Allow the primer to dry overnight, or slightly longer if possible.

STEP FOUR It doesn’t sound like much fun, but you will need to sand again. This time a light sanding will suffice.

STEP FIVE Vacuum and use a dust cloth to ensure there are no little particles left on the floor.

STEP SIX Now it’s time to paint. Do the first coat and allow to dry overnight. You will then need to do an additional coat. Talk to your local paint expert about the type of paint to use but ideally apply it with a natural bristle brush.

PROJECT 2 – REMOVING GLASS FROM A TIMBER FRAME Whether you are installing new glass into old frames, or fixing a broken window, the first thing to do is remove the broken glass safely. It’s not at all hard to do.

You will need gloves, masking tape, some goggles, a hammer and chisel.

1. Protect any surfaces, interior and exterior, with dust sheets to catch broken glass.

2. Apply masking tape over the window surface to ensure the shards stay reasonably contained.

3. Tap the glass with the hammer to loosen the glass. Carefully remove the pieces and dispose of all glass carefully.

4. Once all the glass is removed, use a chisel to clear away the old putty.

5. Sand and dust the timber surface and use a wood primer on the bare timber before fitting the new pane of glass.

PROJECT 3 – INSTALL A STAINLESS STEEL SPLASHBACK When it comes to splashbacks, more often than not we automatically think of tiles.

For a sleek and contemporary style, stainless steel is a great product option.

It tends to be a little expensive but the material looks great and as an added bonus, it is easy to clean, and is heat and water resistant.

Stainless steel panels can be installed directly over existing tiles or on to plasterboard. The product will suit any kitchen style and colour.

The panels can be purchased pre-cut to fit standard-sized spaces or can be custom made for your requirements.

The great thing? These panels are easy to install and will give your kitchen an immediate design boost.

STEP ONE Once you have purchased the panel to fit the required space, you can get to work.

Purchase silicone and apply it along the back of the splashback every eight to 10 centimetres along the length of the product.

STEP TWO Now it’s time to place the splashback on the wall. Line it up to perfectly position it on the wall. To ensure the splashback retains its position while the silicone is drying, wedge some packers under the base of it to keep it in place.

TIP Keep in mind stainless steel splashbacks – just like your stainless steel appliances – tend to mark easily. To keep the panel looking its best, wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any smudges or dirty spots.

Colour is back!

Colour and fun are back in style for 2020, according to trend forecasters.

Carpet Court style ambassador and interior stylist Heather Nette King says considering that grey has been a go-to colour for several years, it’s exciting to see bold brights and soft earthy tones shining.

“These are colours that lift your spirit the moment you walk into a room,” she says. “They cry out for layering of texture, matte finishes and, in some cases, a little bit of daring when it comes to decorating.”

Two standout looks for the season, says Ms Nette King, are Colour Play and Raw Luxe.

I just got a message from a friend who is stuck on Asu island in north Sumatra. Currently no one on the island has coronavirus and he is scoring six-foot waves every day by himself. Sounds too good to be true!

Actually, I made it up! It’s nice to sit back and dream of the perfect scenario!

I have in my possession a new puppy who loves to leave me little presents throughout the house every morning. The real trick is not to find them at night when you go to the toilet – certainly wakes you up!

Anyway, hopefully this shutdown will come to an end soon and we can get back to annoying each other in the surf. Just kidding.
