Mark Kennedy is a proud ex-pat Kiwi who discovered the Sunshine Coast at the end of the 1985 Sydney to Mooloolaba yacht race, and has become a proud Australian citizen with an Aussie family. He now has AUS on his sails and represents Australia when competing in the Laser Masters World Championships and World Masters Games.

What are you watching right now and why do you love it? The development of the new 75-foot foiling monohull America’s Cup sailing boats on YouTube. I’m a keen sailor and love to design and build different things myself. So it’s great to see the radical concepts and designs being fabricated, then put to the test.

Best advice you’ve been given? Do the best you can, never give up and make sure you finish.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Why was it a turning point? I was sailing down the coast delivering a racing yacht from Hamilton Island to Sydney when the rigging let go and snapped the mast. That meant we were stuck in Mooloolaba Yacht Club marina for three months waiting for a new mast. In that time I met DB, my future wife, and really enjoyed the easy-going lifestyle. I loved it that much, I caught the first bus back to Mooloolaba after completing the delivery to Sydney and have not moved on.

What achievement(s) are you most proud of?

Establishing North Coast Appliance Specialists with my wife, and sailing two-handed (me and one other person) on a 37-foot yacht from the Pacific Islands to Sydney and surviving a huge capsize in the middle of the Pacific. Also winning my first gold medal in the single-handed Laser sailing class at the 2009 Sydney World Masters Games.

How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast? 35 years and I love it.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Probably Little Cove when the tide is out.

If you could change one thing on the Coast what would it be? Continue the three lanes northbound on Nicklin Way over the Mooloolah River where the inside lane must exit left to Mooloolaba and/or Mountain Creek.

Stop the convergence of the three lanes into two after the Jessica Boulevard traffic lights.

Best day in your life? There are too many best days, but one was back in 1984 sailing around the Pacific Islands, anchored inside a Noumea reef, surfing a perfect fourto six-foot wave for four days followed by night dives under a new moon.

You are happiest when? I’ve had a productive day and sit back to enjoy the fruits of my labour.

What frustrates you the most? Losing money in the stock market.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Take three deep breaths and just let it go. If not, go and do something physical so that it takes your mind of it.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Buy a comfortable, fast yacht and finish seeing the world.

If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything what would it be? Life is an ever-changing journey. Make smart decisions, look after your health and have fun!

What is your preference, tea or coffee and how do you have it? Tea – white and none. It quenches my thirst even on a hot day.

Safe hands

2020 is the Year of the Nurse, and it’s proving to be the modern profession’s most challenging year yet. But these frontline saviours are ready.

I

n a year set aside to celebrate the achievements of nurses and midwives around the world, never before has their value been more clearly demonstrated. The World Health Organisation has declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife to showcase the brilliant work these hardworking practitioners accomplish around the world in providing professional and compassionate care to the sick, injured and dying. And it has quickly become the most challenging year of their lives.

What would Florence Nightingale do, faced with COVID-19? No doubt, she’d roll up her sleeves and get to work, reminding everyone to wash their hands.

Just like the millions of nurses who have come after her, setting a standard of care that saves lives every single day.

The International Year of the Nurse coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Well ahead of her time, she pioneered hygiene practices, data analysis and even infographics to better explain statistics, taking what was then considered a lowly job and turning it into a noble vocation even the upper classes felt proud to enter into.

Something Nightingale was noted for was her calm demeanour and her methodical approach to maintaining a clean and calm hospital environment, which is something nursing staff

continue to strive for to this day, even under the most stressful of circumstances.

Suzanne Metcalf is the executive director of nursing and midwifery for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. She says our nurses and midwives are used to working under stress and are well equipped to face whatever comes our way.

“I believe our nurses and midwives are an incredible team and I’m proud of the work they do in caring for our community,” she says. “They’re resilient.

“They’ve had extensive training and

how to keep them safe and also save the community on the frontline.

“It’s an emotional time for everyone, including our nurses. There is a bit of irony with regards to this being a tough year with COVID-19 – it wasn’t something we were expecting as part of celebrating the Year of the Nurse.”

Some media reports have focused on a lack of PPE (personal protective equipment) for doctors and nurses around the world, however Ms Metcalf says the Sunshine Coast is in no danger of running out. “We have enough PPE to

one of the things we pride ourselves on is the ability to remain calm and think clearly under pressure.

“Where the pandemic is different, is that they are balancing the demands of work and home life. Many have the responsibility of looking after elderly parents or schoolchildren, as well as working here in the health service. That can obviously impact them enormously,

meet the needs of all of our staff,” she says. “Queensland is unique in that we have our own significant stockpile. We have strategies in place regarding the use of PPE to make sure we conserve the amount of stock and it remains available.”

Ms Metcalf says the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service currently employs around 3300 nurses and has around 500 casual nurses who will also

be stepping in to meet the increasing demand.

“Across the country, routine procedures are being postponed and outpatient appointments are being changed or cancelled,” she says. “Nurses currently within the Hospital and Health Service are sharing their ability to adapt, taking on new tasks and new skills to support the community. Some are being redeployed. This is part of the planning we’ve undertaken to ensue we have the right number of staff in the right place.”

She says reports of nurses being ‘rushed through’ their study to become registered are false. However, last week Health Minister Greg Hunt announced up to 20,000 nurses would be trained online for high demand and intensive care needs, including fitting ventilators, at a cost to taxpayers of $4.1 million. He also said a further 3000 former nurses had put their hands up to return to the workforce.

Ms Metcalf began her career as a nurse in the UK, following in the footsteps of her grandmother.

“I’ve been nursing for 24 years and it’s a profession with great opportunities,” she says. “You’re not limited to just being a bedside nurse. It is certainly a very rewarding career and we’re in a unique position to look after our community.

“Hopefully we have a great opportunity in 2020 to show the community the excellent work we undertake in nursing and we’ll have an opportunity to shine.

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS Kate* is a nurse in one of the emergency departments on the Sunshine Coast and says things are strangely quiet at the moment. But the department is bracing itself for what is to come. She says there’s a lot of misinformation circulating and would like people to know the Sunshine Coast is well prepared for COVID-19.

“There’s misinformation that nurses don’t have the proper protective equipment,” she says. “We’ve had no issue with accessing PPEs [personal protective equipment] in my workplace.

Right now, the curve is flattening and the message is really getting out there that this is a real thing and the best place to be is at home.

“Right now, it’s really quiet in the emergency department where I work.

People are managing their symptoms at home, there’s less road trauma, people aren’t driving as much and we’re not seeing as many sporting injuries.”

Kate became a nurse 30 years ago and says what’s happening now is unlike anything she has ever seen before.

However, she believes the respect now being bestowed upon medical staff across the world for selflessly putting themselves on the frontlines is a long time coming, particularly for nurses, who have often been underpaid and undervalued and seen almost like hospital waitresses.

“We’ve still got a long way to go before nursing is seen in the eyes of most

people as a profession,” she says. “We often get ‘oh, you’re just the nurse’. But it’s up to my assessment whether you get seen by the doctor in 10 minutes or two hours. You’re triaged according to how a nurse assesses your symptoms.

“I feel we need to impress upon the public that nurses are highly studied professionals. We’re not handmaidens to doctors anymore; we’re professionals in our own right and practitioners in our own right.

“That’s an important thing the public needs to be aware of. We’re not heroes; we’re going to work because it’s our job.”

Kate says nurses work very much in a team with doctors and allied health professionals and the hierarchy that once existed is changing.

“I never feel like I’m less than my colleagues that are doctors. I’m consulted, I’m part of the team. They’ll ask, ‘what do you think? Let’s nut this out, what could be happening here?’ I think emergency departments are more like that because they have to be.

“I love the fact that I can make a difference in someone’s life,” she adds.

“People come to us, especially in emergency departments, and it’s often the worst day of their life. They’ve had a heart attack or we’ve told them they’ve got a condition that means they’re not going to live. We have to have difficult conversations with people and that’s an honour. I love that we get to be there for people and make a difference to how this hard stuff is experienced.

“And now we have coronavirus, which is definitely scary. You don’t know if someone who has been brought in after a car accident is positive for the virus, or if they’ve had contact with someone from a cruise ship.

“We’re going to get inundated and it’s only a matter of time. People are going to get sick and be off work and their places need to be filled. The sheer workload is going to be much higher. But we are prepared and we are supported.” *Name changed to protect privacy.

Nurses and midwives account for nearly 50 per cent of the health workforce around the world.

Of the 43.5 million health workers around the world, 20.7 million are nurses and midwives.

Nurses play a critical role in health promotion, disease prevention and delivery of primary and community care, as well as care in emergency settings.

Globally, 70 per cent of the health and social workforce are women compared with 41 per cent in all employment sectors.

Nursing and midwifery occupations represent a significant share of the female workforce.

A new World Health Organisation report, The State of the World’s Nursing 2020, recommends all countries increase funding to educate and employ more nurses, establish more nursing leadership positions and improve working conditions and salaries.

Ashleigh Woods will never forget the first time she had to help a doctor insert an endotracheal tube into a patient’s lungs so they could breathe.

“It’s pretty intense. We got through it…

I stepped outside and just burst into tears because I was so overwhelmed,’’ she says.

“You have to concentrate the whole time and you’re in the zone and you block all of your feelings, and then you walk out and go ‘oh my God that was so intense’.

That’s why debriefing is so important.”

The 25-year-old Southern Cross University graduate, who is now a registered nurse and midwife, is accredited in advanced life support and works in an airway role in an emergency department resuscitation room. She is also now one of the many nurses and medical staff braving the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As there is no current cure for the virus itself, patients are treated for individual symptoms. The majority of people with COVID-19 will have mild symptoms and will recover without needing hospital care.

Unfortunately, though, some patients will be significantly unwell and will need to be cared for in an intensive care unit.

“Not all nurses can work in critical care or in ICU,” Ms Woods says.

“I can ventilate someone as an emergency nurse but not in the long term.

I don’t have that training.”

“We’re all on the spot now. You just become flexible, you adapt and do what you need to do and overcome it.”

Isolation and disconnection seem to be part of our daily lives these days. But the Sunshine Coast Council is here to help with a campaign to keep you feeling connected, healthy and happy even while isolating at home.

T

he Sunshine Coast Council’s #covidkindness campaign continues to support residents with an offering of resources to encourage positive and connectivity.

Launched last month, the initiative explores weekly themes to encourage residents to help combat social isolation, loneliness and community disconnection.

Kicking off the campaign, Mayor Mark Jamieson encouraged the community to reach out and check on neighbours, particularly the older generations. Now, the council has released helpful tips on how to remain connected to benefit mental and physical wellbeing.

The council’s group executive, economic and community development director Greg Laverty is encouraging everyone in the region to look after their physical and mental wellbeing.

BLOOMHILL CANCER CARE CALLS FOR HELP Bloomhill Cancer Care is facing a financial crisis as a result of the COVID-19 upheaval and has issued an Emergency Appeal.

With Bloomhill’s op shops closing, and fundraising markets, cafe and events suspended due to the pandemic, 90 per of the charity’s social enterprise income has now been lost. This will have direct

1. Call your friends, colleagues and relatives regularly on the phone.

2. Reach out and check on your neighbours and assist those who may be isolated or unable to cope, especially our older neighbours.

3. Leave a contact card in your neighbour’s mailbox with your phone number and how you can help, such as shopping or running errands.

4. If you can’t physically visit can you speak to your neighbours from over a fence, across balconies or from the end of the driveway?

5. Create a Facebook group with neighbours, share how you’re getting on and ask other people how they are, share knowledge, skills and resources.

6. Use video calls when you cannot physically visit. You can do this on your computer or smart phone using Skype, Zoom or Facebook Messenger.

7. Red Cross can provide you with a daily

flow-on effects to the health and safety of cancer patients on the Sunshine Coast who rely on Bloomhill Cancer Care.

Bloomhill’s chief executive officer Chris Franck says, “Sadly, 37 of our dedicated staff, including myself, have been stood down without pay. Yet, in the face of this adversity, I am proud to report that thanks to your donations our nurses, psychologist and group support facilitators have continued to provide the very best of care and support for some of our community’s most vulnerable – people living with cancer.

“In the past three weeks, over 400 occasions of care have been delivered via telehealth and virtual consultations – providing connection to professional support and advice in an environment of heightened uncertainty and vulnerability caused by social isolation.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would have need for an

emergency appeal like this. Yet, the reality is Bloomhill Cancer Care is now facing an unprecedented financial crisis – never before seen by our organisation.”

Thousands of Australians finding themselves working from home will get a shortcut to claiming expenses when it comes to tax time.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has created special rules for anyone who has been working at home since March 1 because of measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Instead of having to calculate costs for specific running expenses, such as the proportion of internet time used for work or entertainment, they can claim a flat rate of 80 cents per hour.

ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat says people are required only to keep a record of how many hours they work from home to use this new tax deduction.

“This recognises that many taxpayers are working from home for the first time and makes claiming a deduction much easier,” she says.

Recent polling from Essential Research shows nearly half of workingage Australians have either changed their hours or shifted their work to home in response to the virus. If there are multiple people working from the same home, they can all claim the new rate.

The ATO has also dropped the requirement to have a dedicated office area, with many people setting up ad-hoc work spaces, especially if everyone in their household is at home.

People can still use the old method of calculating proportion of use and depreciation if they prefer.

The new arrangement is in place only between March 1 and June 30, but the ATO will keep an eye on the coronavirus situation and decide if it should continue into the next financial year.

HISTORY

ONE FOR THE ROAD Take a trip down Nicklin Way today and you’d be hard-pressed to picture the area as it was just 60 years ago, when there was nothing but scrub and sand as far as they eye could see. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

“L

ook kids. One day there will be houses through here,” my father said as we bumped along the dirt road between Mooloolaba and Caloundra in his old Kombi van.

It was the early 1960s and we sincerely thought the old man had taken leave of his senses. The idea of houses being built in this remote place, with scattered windbeaten trees and beach grass leading down to sand dunes on one side and swamp on the other, was absurd.

The road was rocky as well as full of potholes, and when the Kombi went down with a flat tyre just on dusk, it was a family drama akin to being stuck somewhere west of the black stump.

It had been a pleasant day out though, heading off early with a Sunday picnic from Nambour to King’s Beach, where the older folks could patronise a small stand selling boiled water for their teapot while the kids joined a few other local kids playing on the beach. There was more sand and grass than concrete and bitumen in those days.

Much later, that spot where we had picked up the flat tyre was to be known as Kawana and the rocky road was sealed and called Nicklin Way. My father, of course, was right. Less than half a century later, not only are there houses and grand canal estates along that strip, but there are also huge commercial and industrial centres way beyond the wildest dreams of any picnicking families of the ’60s.

By the 1970s, as stickybeaking teenagers, we would head down what was by then a sealed but still narrow, two-lane

Kawana was all wallum when what was to become Nicklin Way first linked Caloundra with Mooloolaba. road towards Caloundra, before turning off at a sandy beach trail to reach the dunes at Shangri-La. The section of secluded beach was frequented by nude and topless bathers and seemed ever-so-naughty to the young voyeurs who dared to go and peek.

Had it not be shut down some time in the late ’70s, it would no doubt cause quite a fuss among the residents who now live in its vicinity between Warana and Wurtulla.

Usually though, we went to Cotton Tree where a slippery slide and diving platform in the middle of a little bay near a grassy verge – which was to become an Olympic swimming pool site – were at the whim of the tide. Sometimes it was easy for small children to climb up to the platform and slide into the water, but sometimes the water was so deep that only the teenagers dared swim out to it.

There was also a wading pool in the adjacent park, which had a magnificent green pillar topped by a black swan at its centre and the old cotton trees were perfect for climbing and playing hide and seek.

A little store that stood in the centre of a large traffic island at the end of nearby Sixth Avenue made the best hamburgers in town.

When we grew older, we went to Cotton Tree for the rollerdrome, at the King Street end of the Esplanade, where spacious apartment blocks and coffee shops have long since replaced the big block and concrete structure that rocked to hits like Knock Three Times.

It was one of the few really exciting things to do after dark and local teens would come from far and wide to carry out their courting rituals on wheels.

The Star Cinema in Baden Powell Street, Maroochydore, with its low-slung canvas seats, was another groovy place to go, clad in cheesecloth and reeking of patchouli oil, or there was the Beach theatre in downtown Cotton Tree.

Mooloolaba also had a picture theatre, the Pacific, that stood on the corner of Brisbane Road and the Esplanade where the Peninsular tower was later built, but its star was also fading by the ’70s.

The old picture theatres lost business to the Maroochydore Drive-In Theatre that opened off Maud Street in the early 1970s, to compete with the first drive-in theatre midway between Nambour and the coast, roughly where Maroochydore Road meets the Bruce Highway.

By this time, the Kawana strip was really moving ahead. From the Big W site, without the trees and gardens that have grown up, it appeared a long, straight road lined by telegraph poles.

Houses soon cropped up along Nicklin Way – one with arches, one with square windows, one an L-shape, but every fifth one exactly the same. It’s harder to tell that there was a pattern to their construction now, as gardens and renovations have wiped out the obvious repetition in design.

And now it’s not just Kawana or Kawana Waters, but Buddina, Birtinya, Bokarina, Warana and Wurtulla.

Neither is it a problem if you get a flat tyre. In fact, you couldn’t be better placed.

INGREDIENTS • ¼ cup of Mayver’s unhulled tahini • ⅛ cup maple syrup • ¼ cup finely shredded coconut • ¼ cup almond meal • ¼ cup quinoa flakes • ⅛ cup cacao •1 tbsp chia seeds • 1 tsp instant espresso (to help enhance the richness of the chocolate) • Sprinkles • Cacao • Coconut flakes

METHOD Place all ingredients, apart from the sprinkles, cacao and coconut flakes into a medium-size bowl and stir to combine.

If the mixture is a little dry, add a splash of water (a teaspoon at a time) until it sticks together to form a sticky ‘dough’.

Scoop a small section of dough and roll in the palm of your hand to shape into bite-size balls. Repeat until all the mixture has been used.

Tip: Use approximately 1 heaped teaspoon per bite which makes them the perfect size for popping into your mouth on the down-low, so you don’t have to share!

If you are going to coat your bliss balls in cacao, coconut or sprinkles, simply place your cacao, coconut and/or sprinkles into a small bowl or zip-lock bag with the balls and gently shake until nicely coated. Store in the fridge until ready to serve. Then enjoy!

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STIMULUS PACKAGE

he Federal Government has announced several stimulus measures in response to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic that affect employees, super, tax and social security.

The JobKeeper Payment is a temporary scheme open to businesses impacted by coronavirus. It is aimed at supporting employers to maintain their connection to their employees. The JobKeeper Payment will also be available to the self-employed. The government will provide $1500 per fortnight (before tax) per employee for up to six months.

received by employers in the first week of May. Businesses can register their interest in participating in the payment now on the Australian Taxation Office website.

Coronavirus Supplement is a $550 fortnightly payment automatically applied to certain fortnightly social security payments for a period of six months. This will be paid to new and existing recipients of benefits such as JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance, Parenting Payment, Farm Household Allowance, Special Benefit.

Eligible Social Security recipients and card holders will receive two $750 tax-free lump-sum payments. If you qualify, this payment will automatically be added to your bank account.

From April 20, eligible individuals may access superannuation of $10,000 before June 30 and a further $10,000 from July 1 to September 24.

Payments will be tax-free and not affect Centrelink or DVA entitlements.

Application can be made via the myGov website.

The government is reducing the deeming rates by a further 0.25 percentage points on top of the already announced 0.5 per cent reduction to reflect the latest cash rate reductions

Australian treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced the $130 billion wage subsidy package at Parliament House by the Reserve Bank of Australia. As a result, the lower deeming rate will be 0.25 per cent and the upper deeming rate will be 2.25 per cent. The lower rates will automatically apply from May 1, with any increased Age Pension entitlements paid from that date.

Account-based pensions’ minimum pension payments will be reduced by 50 per cent effective for 2019/20 and 2020/21 financial years. If you have already drawn the reduced minimum amount in the current income year, you will not be required to take any additional payments. This is similar to

the measures introduced during the GFC and will assist in the preservation of capital and potentially reduce the need to sell assets to make pension payments.

There’s a silver lining to every cloud, writes Sami Muirhead, who is discovering plenty of things to enjoy during these difficult times.

We’re all in a state of grief thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, writes Leigh Robshaw. But there is much meaning to be found in life too.

I

tried really hard to write about something other than Wretched ’Rona this week. I really did. But I failed. Our whole lives have changed so dramatically within a few months and coronavirus has affected everyone I know.

So I thought I would focus on the positives coming from our lifestyle overhaul. There are plenty of horrible things we are all battling with but we are at risk of overdosing on the news that is worse than a horror movie. So here are some good things about Wretched ’Rona.

I spoke to three of my neighbours this week. Three! That may seem insignificant to some of you but I we have wanted to have drinks with our immediate neighbours for years. A catch-up has been as elusive as toilet paper. However, finally, we are all in no rush. It feels lovely and old-fashioned to just stand and talk to such nice human beings. We have been spending much longer on walks around the neighbourhood and out to Point Cartwright. I did that as a child. It is so strange having nowhere to rush. I have time to stop and pat the dogs. I am finishing cups of tea while they are still hot.

I am reading again. I’m not spending money I do not have by shopping on the internet at midnight.

We are FaceTiming those who really matter. These social windows sitting on my phone at 6pm on a Friday are some of the loveliest happy hours of my life because I

look forward to them all day. I connect with my friends who I have known for decades.

I am working out who is important in my life and what is important. The thought makes me sick when I imagine going back to rushing to go to swimming lessons at 7am Saturday morning followed by kids’ sports followed by kids’ parties followed by trying to clean the house and do a grocery shop and getting ready for the working week.

y new passport arrived in the mail the other day.

Ordinarily, a new passport is cause for excitement, but it’s a sad reminder of the once-in-a-lifetime holiday I had planned with my sister to Hawaii in June. It’s cancelled, of course.

Cancelled, along with all of the other plans in the whole wide world.

There has been so much cancellation and devastation in such a short space of time that we are in a collective state of shock and grief. On top of grief for who and what we’ve already lost, we are also experiencing anticipatory grief.

In an article in the Harvard Business Review (look it up, it will make you feel better), Scott Berinato cites the work of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler.

Mr Kessler has added to the famous five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance – with another stage: meaning.

In his book, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief, Mr Kessler explains that once you’ve cycled through the five stages of grief – not necessarily in linear order – you arrive at meaning. In our darkest hours, meaning is the light that never goes out.

For now, it may all seem like a meaningless, cruel act of nature (or a deliberate 5G cover-up, for the conspiracy theorists out there). If you want to be nihilistic and say there is no meaning in what we are going through, knock

And my favourite pastime is running to the TV on a Sunday night shouting “Scotty is on the TV, kids! Come and see what new bans he will introduce this week!” As a kid we had appointment TV and in my twenties I would never miss an episode of Friends. The Prime Minister’s weekly check-in with families across the nation has become my must-see show.

So, try to stay positive. And if you have a headache like me do not panic and think it is COVID-19. It’s probably from yelling at the kids.

I’ve been sad, teary, depressed, angry, scared and shocked (especially when I watched Tiger King on Netflix). But I’m trying to find something to be grateful for and something meaningful in each day.

When I go for a bike ride with my sons, I feel the warmth of the sun on my back and it reminds me how lucky I am to be alive.

It’s the simple things that give me meaning. A beautiful butterfly fluttering around me, making me smile when I’m feeling down. Bringing me back to the present moment. Sunshine. Love.

Kindness. Family. Friends. Connection.

For now, we feel awfully disconnected from each other. But while we are keeping our distance, even strangers are making a special effort to connect with their eyes. To manage a smile. We don’t even need words to communicate the universal sentiment: yeah this sucks, but let’s be kind to each other because we are all in this together and we must get through it together. And then we’ll have a massive party.

In my mind, I keep hearing Vera Lynn’s WWII-era song that my grandma used to play on her pianola. It means so much more now: ‘We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when. But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.’

SAY WHAT? We might not be able to travel right now, but it’s still a great time to learn a new language, particularly if you are a retiree or over 70. WORDS: Julie Lake.

any retirees have been left dreaming of a holiday that never was in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, now is a great time to stimulate your brain and have some fun learning to speak another language. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to prepare for future trips abroad.

Jeanette Drewes loves everything about Italy – the art architecture, music, food and wine. “I have done a couple of trips which included cookery lessons,” she says. “But these were for tourists and no Italian was needed… [but] when you love a country like I love Italy you can’t get a real understanding of it without being able to speak the language.”

Ms Drewes drives to her job three days a week listening to Duolingo, the most popular of the language learning apps. She also does an online course and has taken part in a regular class with other students. “I love the class and the interaction with real people, but I need more than once a week,” she says.

Having an app that can be used at any time at home or during five-minute breaks at work is the best way to go.

She is one of thousands of Queenslanders who have taken up the challenge of learning another language late in life because digital technology has made it easier than ever before. We’ve come a long way from the linguaphone records of yesteryear, which basically taught you what to say and how to say it but gave little idea of what to do if somebody spoke back to you.

Today we can choose to learn the traditional way through a school or private tutor or we can do it digitally. Or we can do as most students do – combine the two.

Relatively few seniors want to spend time and money trying to acquire a university language degree, but anyone can afford to take advantage of online courses. A popular free or very low-cost provider of language learning is University of the Third Age (U3A), which caters specifically to retirees. Before self-isolation, retired criminal barrister Peter Lancaster attended a weekly U3A Japanese class because, he says, “he is so in love with everything Japanese” and sees the language as a way of understanding the culture.

The U3A of which he is a member also offers Spanish, French, German, Italian and even Latin.

Sue Morris has done them all, and in the past has taught a French class. Now in her late seventies, she has a lifelong love affair with languages. To her it is less about achieving fluency in any one language and more about keeping her brain active – and there are few things more demanding of the human brain than retaining several languages.

According to University of Edinburgh researchers, monolingual patients tend to develop dementia earlier than those who speak two languages.

Studies about seniors learning new languages show that while it’s true they find it harder to remember new words than teenagers do, they bring the same advantages to language study as they do to other forms of learning: life experience, motivation, positive attitude and time.

The hardest thing for older people is not learning new vocabulary but how to pronounce it. This is a particular problem for those who have never taken learning another language very seriously. The other disadvantages of age are impaired hearing and sight, so it’s important to choose a learning program that compensates for this.

A survey found French, Italian, Spanish and German are the most popular languages with Japanese and Bahasa Indonesian coming next. Not many, it seems, are keen to tackle the challenges of Mandarin. But whatever language you learn, teachers agree there are no shortcuts that can make us learn faster – it comes down to work and repetition.

A support measure for those financially affected by coronavirus is the early release of super. So, what does it all mean?

From mid-April (subject to legislation), eligible Australians will be able to withdraw up to $10,000 of their superannuation in 2019-20, plus a further $10,000 in 2020-21.

These payments are tax-free and will not affect any Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs payments. To apply for early release of super, members must show they are unemployed; are eligible to receive a JobSeeker payment, Youth Allowance for job seekers, Parenting Payment, Special Benefit or Farm Household Allowance; or on or after January 1 were made redundant, had their working hours reduced by 20 per cent or more, or are a sole trader and their business was suspended or there was a reduction in turnover of 20 per cent or more.

Members will be able to apply for early release from mid-April through the myGov website. If successful, the ATO will direct their super fund to release their super payment.

To ensure you receive payment as soon as possible, make sure your super fund has your current bank account details.

ike so many businesses in other industries, real estate agents and companies are adapting to ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions in order to remain open. As a vital industry in not just Queensland but around the country, keeping things going is the goal of agents as they go virtual in an attempt to do just that.

Grant Smith of Grant Smith Property

says he is offering virtual open homes and using different apps to give a potential buyer a sense of a property, which he says he is doing with very few challenges.

“We are seeing a positive uptake on our virtual inspections and open homes.

“The beauty of the virtual open homes is all good agents will have them attached to the inspection section of real estate

portals, meaning you can watch them from the websites rather than a specific app. For individual walkthroughs, FaceTime or WhatsApp have been the most effective with buyers.

“There are no real challenges and it’s a positive change to offer buyers more information from the comfort of their own home,” Mr Smith adds.

Karen Jones of Adams & Jones Property Specialists has also gone virtual and says it’s keeping her team busy, although it’s “a different way of doing business”. “We are finding that buyers are responding well to the new way forward.

“As well as virtual open homes, we are doing walkthroughs that are online on REA and FaceTiming with clients on virtual inspections.”

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella highlights other benefits of virtual tours to buyers such as allowing people to look any time, from anywhere.

“A 360-degree virtual tour allows any property to be captured in full in virtual reality, allowing potential buyers the ability to carry out the same examination

process, room by room, only without any physical presence.

“Virtual inspections can have many advantages to a traditional approach. For example, potential buyers can inspect the property at any time of the day or night to fit in with their own schedule.

“They can also be in any location to inspect the property using any device they

“And it allows interstate buyers the ability to inspect the property without distance being an inhibiting factor, opening the property to a wider pool of interested parties.”

But it’s not just open homes going virtual – auctions are also taking a new shape as people are prevented from bidding under the one roof. Gordon Macdonald of The Auction Group in Mooloolaba says buyers are adapting.

“From the virtual auctions we’ve called over the last few weeks, we’ve noticed a real willingness from buyers to adapt to the new auction platform,” Mr Macdonald says. “From the buyers’ point of view, it’s super easy.

“They receive an email to register to

bid, they are then prompted by a link to join the auction platform. It’s actually easier than the previous processes of registration.

“Fundamentally the auction process hasn’t changed, we just choose to negotiate in a different space now.”

Ms Jones is doing just that. “I will be running my first virtual auction on April 18 for the fabulous Argyle penthouse and I am excited to see how that pans out,” she says.

And while the future is still uncertain due to COVID-19, Mr Smith is optimistic for the property market despite experiencing a decrease in enquiries.

“The beauty of real estate is in all markets there are buyers and sellers who need to transact for various reasons. There

are still industries such as health care that are performing very well, meaning that activity will still continue.

“In fact, some sellers who don’t need to sell may remove their properties from the market or even hold back going to market, meaning there is still supply and demand. If there is less on the market, the prices will sustain,” Mr Smith explains.

Ms Mercorella says while it’s too early to make predictions about how property prices will perform, the property market will inevitably be impacted by a reduction in total volume.

“Sellers still need to contend with the enforced restrictions placed on property auctions and open house inspections – this may affect consumer confidence depending on how long these measures are in place.

“There’s some evidence that a small percentage of listings are being withdrawn from auction in the last few weeks, but the market remains stable and people have readily embraced technology as the new normal for both buying and selling property,” Ms Mercorella concludes.

Thought I’d share a proud dad moment with you. Recently I was road tripping with my son. It was pre-COVID. I suggested he put on a few tunes he likes from Spotify. The playlist consisted of Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin and Eminem to name a few. As I drove along, I thought, ‘man, the kid’s got groove for a 12-year-old’!
