Surviving COVID-19 Separated parents & managing challenges through this crisis We have a few suggestions that may make life a little easier:

1. Be Understanding There is no doubt that a lot of people are going to be exposed to financial strain if not hardship over the coming weeks and months. A little understanding now can go a long way to maintaining or enhancing a co-parenting relationship.

2. Be Generous If one parent misses out on time with the children, because of having to work additional hours, or is in isolation, offer to make up time where possible. Family Court Judges want to see parents being accommodating and will not be impressed by parents who are inflexible especially now. Imagine you were in their shoes.

3. Be Creative Accept that things are not going to always go as planned, things are changing by the hour and it is important to try to solve problems rather than create them. If one parent is going to miss out on time, try to encourage an alternative, an extra phone call before bed, facetime for story time or encourage games to be played online between the other parent and the children.

4. Be Compliant (as best as possible) If you have a Parenting Agreement or Orders, stick to them as best you can, now is not the time to be opportunistic or to try to vary arrangements unnecessarily. If you cannot comply, be honest with the other parent, explain the circumstances and try to come to a solution that is acceptable to both of you.

5. Be Mindful Everyone is going to be frustrated, stressed, and even anxious. Now is not the time to be discussing contentious issues, just try to focus on what needs to be done now to make sure that the health and safety of your children is covered, the rest can wait.

6. Be Patient Let’s be honest, we all need a little slack to be cut for us at the moment. You may not know exactly what is going on for the other parent and they may be having a really hard time, be patient and try to work around them as best as possible.

7. Be a Team Your children need you now more than ever to be seen as a team, united and working together for them. Don’t sweat the small stuff, it is really not important right now.

Overall, common sense and flexibility are extremely important in times like these. Make sure you communicate with the other parent and keep them informed of any updates relevant to your children, including their health or education etc.

Pandemic Impacts on Family law, property matters & child support obligations Set out below are some of the ways COVID-19 may affect you:

1. The value of the asset pool.

COVID-19 will likely have a significant impact on the value of assets, for example: (a) Share values - share values are likely to decline significantly in the short term. (b) Superannuation - we are seeing member balances reduce dramatically. Rather than splitting superannuation with fixed sums you may need to consider a percentagebased approach. (c) Businesses - business valuations prepared before the COVID-19 pandemic may now be inaccurate and overstated. (d) Real Property – Experts are predicting that house values are likely to be hit hard in the coming months. Homes could prove difficult to sell because auctions and open home inspections are currently not allowed. The true impact of COVID-19 on house prices in the months to come is unknown, but it is likely to be significant.

2. Child Support If your financial circumstances have changed (ie. you have lost your job or your hours have been reduced) you may be able to seek a reduction your child support payments.

3. Agreements not yet Documented Parties who have recently finalised their property settlements may now find that they cannot comply with the terms of it, or that it is now a very unfair one. In this case it may be possible to set the Agreement aside based on the impacts of COVID-19. You should seek legal advice before you do this.

4. Bankruptcy and Insolvency Many businesses are struggling as a result of COVID-19 and the incidences of bankruptcy and insolvency are expected to rise. This may affect your property settlement matter significantly. Specialist family law advice is recommended if this happens to you.

5. Interim Arrangements Consideration will need to be given to interim arrangements in property matters in light of COVID-19 i.e. maintaining business cash flow, finding ways to meet living expenses and liabilities such as mortgage payments. These issues should be addressed before they become urgent and with a view to maintaining the value of assets in the pool where possible.

Call

of the wild Jane Stephens found an extraordinary story in an unlikely place, and she shares it in her first book. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

J

ane Stephens was at a crossroads in her life when she met the man who would inspire her to write her first book.

In 2015, the journalist and University of the Sunshine Coast academic had gone through a marriage breakdown and sold the family home, before heading off to

Thailand to volunteer at a wildlife rescue centre. There, she met an extraordinary man, Edwin Wiek, who founded Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, Asia’s largest multi-species rescue centre.

“He has run the centre for the last 20 years,” says Dr Stephens. “He had a high-profile, lucrative career in fashion

and had a massive car accident and almost died. He decided to completely change direction. He gave up all of that and started rescuing animals. I knew from the beginning that was a really good basis for an interesting biography.

“The story kind of found me. I was in a state of flux and I was going on a big trip. I loved that idea of going there and doing the grunt work. No one cared who you were, it was all very egalitarian. I did quite a lot of research before I went and I felt very confident this wasn’t about making animals dependent. A lot of places take in injured animals and they become quite dependent.

This place was focused on trying to help the animals regain their natural instincts, and those that could be released, would be released back into the wild.

“On a return visit the next year, I got into a conversation with Edwin. I had just found out I’d got my PhD and I said to him, ‘you do a lot of media – has anyone ever written your story’? I’m a journalist, but I had never written a book. I was covered in lantana, dirt and poo and I said, ‘I’m not going to write a PR piece for you. It’s not going to be a puff piece; I want honesty’.

He’s a very colourful character.”

Dr Stephens returned six times over an 18-month period to interview Mr Wiek to write the eye-opening biography. A Wild Life: The Edwin Wiek Story examines not only the injustices suffered by trafficked animals in Asia, but also shows the amazing work those with enough determination and resilience do to right the wrongs of our world.

“I went back and forth during 2017 and 2018 because he had to communicate face-to-face,” she says. “He is hyperactive and always on the move. Occasionally I’d get him over dinner, but most of the time it was sitting side-by-side while we were driving somewhere.

“It was an eye-opener – the way other governments work and the way rules can be bent and stretched. Also, humans do the most extraordinary things to other living things. Sometimes they think they’re loving them, but they’re killing them slowly.

“I wanted to highlight the situation for animals who should be wild, but are used by humans for entertainment or work. In the course of my research, I went with Edwin to temples and people’s homes to negotiate for the handover of monkeys and otters, apes and birds – most of them treated either like children or things. It was shocking.”

In writing the book, Dr Stephens hopes to bring to light the illegal trafficking of wildlife that occurs in many parts of the world. “I was hoping to raise awareness

“I also wanted to inspire others to take a chance on something. If you believe in something enough, it is worth backing yourself to bring about change. It’s not easy.

Edwin is quite lonely at times and he’s running this big operation. But if it matters enough to you and others, it is worth it.”

4. MAKE AN ENTRANCE Never underestimate the power of a fabulous facade. For sellers, it’s those vital first impressions that either lure people in or send them running. Even just decluttering, tidying, cleaning, repairing and generally giving the front of your place some intensive TLC will achieve miracles. A good going over with a high-pressure hose strips decades off most old surfaces. And if you’ve got ugly, bare concrete paths or a driveway, then think about paving paint. You can tint it to any colour so it blends with your facade.

New garden beds, an updated letterbox, some smart stainless steel house numerals, a few solar lights – it’s all those little touches that add up to a big impact.

And don’t forget you can just paint the facade of a house instead of the whole exterior.

5. BUMP UP THE STORAGE We all know you can never have enough storage, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. Maybe you simply don’t have the budget or space for a kitchen pantry or new wardrobes. If you want to start a project, grab your hat and tape measure and begin by h measuring your space and drawing up m a plan of your project. The biggest trap for keen jelly beans is to jump into fo ssomething without thinking it through first. Why not find a plot in your yard for a small (or large) vegetable garden? Loosen up your soil, add some compost if needed and plant away. Make sure you pick a good spot with plenty of sun and don’t be afraid to pop your vegetable scraps and seeds into the garden to see what might pop up. If you don’t have space you could use a few large pots instead.

4. GET PAINTING 2. CELEBRATE SMALL THINGS Don’t underestimate the feeling of accomplishing a small job. Weeding and mulching your front gardens can make such a difference in just a day, or pressure cleaning a driveway or mouldy wall can make you feel wonderful once it’s sparkling clean.

5. ADD A FIRE PIT With the cooler months approaching, the construction of a fire pit might be a good idea. If you have the space and a safe spot,

DON’T FORGET ABOUT US As a not-for-profit, Hear and Say has been deeply affected by the financial fallout from COVID-19. But despite the loss in revenue and the impact on its services, the organisation is moving ahead to provide help to the state’s hearing-impaired children.

N

ot-for-profit businesses have been some of the hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those who have relied on fundraising and are now faced with a massive drop in revenue.

Hear and Say has been hit hard, but is pivoting quickly to ensure it can still offer its important services. Hear and Say is a Queensland not-for-profit that enables deaf and hard-of-hearing children learn to hear, listen and speak.

Chief executive officer Chris McCarthy says 75 per cent of Hear and Say’s income stems from fundraising or clinical service delivery, but with these revenue streams facing disruption, help is needed.

“I’m trying to look at it optimistically,” says Mr McCarthy. “It will be financially challenging, but we’ve already taken the step of putting in place some austerity measures to reduce the expenses of the organisation. The whole team has said they’ll take a bit of a pay cut during this period, so we can keep everyone on.

“When you think about the families we support, many of them are already in a vulnerable space. There is a lot of anxiety

“I think our team has done really well through telephone contact, Skype, Zoom and so on. I’ve asked our team to do that on reduced wages so we can make it through the long haul and they’ve stepped up to it. I’ve said, during a crisis, you see the best and worst of people. At Hear and Say, we’ve seen the best.”

Mr McCarthy says the organisation was already transitioning to a mobile workforce when the pandemic hit, so it has been a

relatively smooth transition to a telepractice program, with clients able to receive their therapy over the phone or through video conferencing.

“Our tele-health program at Hear and Say was usually for rural and remote families,” says Mr McCarthy. “We were well-practised in the art and science of teleconferencing, so we’ve transitioned those urban families and particularly families in our early intervention program to a tele-health line. I would say the vast majority have done it successfully.

“We now have families from the bush joining with families from the city, which wouldn’t have happened previously. The Hear and Say community has always been strong, but this in some ways has brought us together and it has been an unexpected consequence of the COVID pandemic.”

Hear and Say looks after around 900 children across a variety of programs, with some of those, such as a school screening program for early diagnosis of children, having to close temporarily. “In the past two weeks, we have transitioned approximately 130 early intervention families, who would normally have

received face-to-face therapy, onto the tele-practice program,” says Mr McCarthy.

“This is in addition to the 40 to 50 families living regionally who were already using it.”

Hear and Say needs around $500,000 per month to operate and with fundraising opportunities cancelled, the organisation is in need of help. “People who have traditionally donated are worried about their own jobs or have hit their own limits when it comes to donating and supporting causes,” says Mr McCarthy. “It’s a tough environment for all Australians.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Life has changed, and fast. Rules and regulations are constantly evolving and it can be difficult to navigate various websites to keep up with the latest information. We’ve compiled some of the more important advice into one easy-to-read guide. Source: AAP and Queensland Health.

WHAT IS SOCIAL DISTANCING? Firstly, it means keeping a physical distance between yourself and others, and secondly, it applies to the tough restrictions in place to stop people gathering in groups.

HOW CLOSE CAN I GET TO OTHERS? The medical advice is you should keep 1.5 metres away from other people. No more handshakes, hugging or air kisses. But Australia’s chief medical officer Brendan Murphy has conceded families or people who live in the same house can hardly avoid being in such close proximity.

WHAT ABOUT TOUCHING THINGS? Research shows the virus can last a long time – up to three days in some cases – on surfaces after sick people have touched them. The main thing you should be doing is washing your hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based sanitiser, and paying for things using tap-and-go contact-less methods.

WHY SHOULD I STAY AT HOME? To avoid other people as much as possible and thus avoid spreading or contracting the virus. Governments have put in place increasingly tighter restrictions on social gatherings. People aged over 70, those over 60 with pre-existing conditions, and indigenous people over 50 with pre-existing conditions should stay home wherever possible for their own protection.

CAN I MEET PEOPLE OUTSIDE? Gatherings are restricted to two people, indoors and out (unless they are members of the same household). So you can catch up with one friend to walk or run through a park, but you should still keep 1.5 metres

Speaking about the rule last week, premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the change to the rule intended to help families who don’t live in the same home stay connected.

WHAT’S OFF LIMITS? • Cafes, restaurants, fast-food outlets, food courts. However, takeaway service and home delivery remains open. Social distancing, including keeping 1.5 metres between people must be accommodated, implemented and monitored by employees or contractors of the retail food service provider. Gathering for the

purposes of ordering or collecting must not exceed one person per four square metres.

• Auctions and open-house inspections • Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing, nail salons and tattoo parlours. Hairdressers and barber shops remain operational with strict rules.

• Registered and licensed clubs, cinemas, nightclubs, casinos, theme parks, arcades, play centres. Bottle shops remain open.

• Sporting-based activities, including boot camps and personal training, are limited to two people including the trainer.

• Swimming pools including public pools and pools in shared facilities such as hotels and apartments. A pool located in a private home can be used by occupants only.

• Public playgrounds, public barbecues, skate parks, BMX tracks and outside gyms, including static exercise equipment in council parks.

• All national parks, along with hiking tracks, picnic areas, camping areas, swimming holes and lookouts.

• Recreational boat ramps and pontoons – closed to non-essential users. Essential users include non-powered craft for exercise, powered craft for transport and fishing for food for your family. The

SO, WHERE CAN I GO? Queenslanders are permitted to leave home for the essentials, including: • shopping for food, • exercising – in a public space such as a park, limited to no more than two people, • going out for medical appointments or to the pharmacy, • providing care or support to another person in a place other than your home, such as buying groceries for an elderly relative or neighbour, • going to work if you cannot work from home.

ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS? Some exceptions are allowed, such as funerals – although only 10 mourners are allowed – and visiting terminally ill relatives. KEPING IT SIMPLE

THAT’S THE SPIRIT

Easter has put Sami Muirhead in a pensive mood, and she reflecting on days gone by and pondering the days ahead.

There is lots of kindness in our community, writes Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane, who is heartened to see plenty of light in these dark times.

E

aster this year will be one we all remember thanks to a word no one had even heard of this time last year: coronavirus!

Before corona (BC), Easter was all about quaffing rosé, Easter egg hunts and church with the little kids shoulder to shoulder with other children on the floor at the front near the altar. Can you believe church will be a Facebook event this year?

Everything has changed so quickly and I am yearning for the day we will all go back to traditions and a familiar flow.

Easter will be tweaked this year but perhaps it will be more special than ever because we will not take for granted plentiful food and abundant toilet paper! I am learning to see with new eyes. I take longer walking to the car to stop and look at the single magnolia flower on the teddy bear tree. I rub my moisturiser into my face and stop for a few minutes to do this instead of slapping it on and rushing out of the bathroom. My husband and I are drinking our coffee together. This has not happened for 10 years.

How did our world change so quickly?

This year for Easter we will be having a lunch with just our immediate family. I will miss my mum, who is self- isolating. There will be no excessive presents. I will not be dashing to the shops just for the sake of ensuring the kids have a large egg each.

What we have is pretty simple and I am okay with that. There probably will not be

the usual chilled champagne. And that is more than okay too. We may watch a movie or play some board games. It is actually a luxury to not have plans. I’ve learnt I have too many plans.

I feel humbled by recent events. And terrified about what is ahead. But I am also ready to enjoy the simple stuff a lot more.

There is so much to fear from corona but there are a few gifts to take away as well.

Growing up, my birthdays were often celebrated at my Grandma’s house. She would cook a batch of cupcakes with lemon icing. We never thought to order a fancy cake with a rose gold cake topper with our name on it. We did not film the birthday cake-cutting ceremony to put on Instagram.

The little cupcakes were made with love with ingredients bought weeks before the big day. My grandma would make them in her apron and her kitchen would smell of the sweet cinnamon and dried fruit she would put inside them. We blew out the candles after we sang Happy Birthday and we all sat on the porch and just hung out.

We never had anywhere to go or anywhere to be. We were exactly where we were meant to be.

On a side note, my beautiful kids are worried the corona will kill the Easter Bunny. I have told them corona cannot kill him. Only myxomatosis can. Happy Easter everyone. Enjoy the time at home and enjoy having fewer expectations.

here is no doubt these are interesting times. I am well aware this is putting it mildly.

My heart goes out to those who have had their health or livelihoods impacted by COVID-19.

I must admit I was unsettled when we first heard about the virus. I was worried about what our future would look like if we as a community were standing firmly in an ‘every man for himself’ mentality.

It was so far removed from the Sunshine Coast community I know and love and it shook me to the core to see this happening. But even though I have been self-isolating with my two children for three weeks now, I have been heartened to see the true spirit of the Coast starting to shine through.

Children’s birthdays are being marked with drive-by visitors singing and waving out of their car windows, online events are encouraging us to get out in the fresh air to adorn our driveways with beautiful chalk designs, successful business owners are offering free mentoring and coaching to people who are feeling at a loss, and people are reaching to offer emotional support over the phone or via video calls.

I am so pleased to see that even though we still have a period of uncertainty ahead of us, we have returned back to our default setting of compassion and kindness. Long may it continue.

I want to give a huge shout out to our

emergency service and health care workers. To the supermarket workers who continue to stock the shelves and ensure we have fresh food to purchase when we need it. To the businesses who are continuing to operate to serve the needs of our community and to every single person who has had to grin and bear it when copping some undeserved abuse.

Don’t forget that kindness is free.

Whether it’s offering to split a package

“I was worried about what our future would look like” of toilet paper with someone who missed out when the shelves were re-stocked, giving your neighbour a friendly wave on your way to the letterbox or calling a friend or relative just to check in and see how they are doing, it might not seem significant to you, but these simple acts of kindness could potentially turn someone’s entire day around.

At the end of the day, we are all in this together and if we can navigate these unchartered waters in one large ship, we have a much greater chance of success than we would if we are all paddling frantically in our own tiny life rings.
