Karen Brooks’ historical fiction not only entertains and delights – it also offers compelling lessons for modern life. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

D

r Karen Brooks could be forgiven for doubting whether humanity will ever learn the lessons of history. An acclaimed author, academic and social commentator, she has released a chilling new book about the witch hunts of Scotland during the early

18th century and, like her previous historical novels, has taken a deep dive back in time only to find disturbingly similar patterns of behaviour to those going on in the world of late.

The Darkest Shore is a gripping fictionalised account of the shocking witch

hunt of Pittenweem, a fishing village on the east coast of Scotland where in 1703 and 1704, a number of fishwives were accused of witchcraft. It is a foreboding tale but also a moving testament to the endurance of female friendship. “I’ve never cried so much writing a book,� Dr Brooks says. “My husband would come home and find me emotionally distraught. It’s one thing to invent, but it’s a different thing to invent around something that actually happened. Truth is not only stranger than fiction, but often a lot crueller. I’m constantly astounded by humanity’s capacity for kindness, but also capacity for cruelty. “We find scapegoats in society. What’s interesting in the contemporary world is you could substitute a witch for a whole lot of other names. We continue to scapegoat people, with the coronavirus – there is a certain culture that was scapegoated.

Dr Brooks has written 13 books in total, including The Brewer’s Tale, The Locksmith’s Daughter and The Chocolate Maker’s Wife, novels that tell the stories of forgotten women in history. “I see my role as putting creative flesh on history’s dry bones,� she says with a characteristically beautiful turn of phrase. “In The Chocolate Maker’s Wife I write about the Great Plague of 1665. There was panic, fear, stockpiling, misinformation, self-isolation. I worry we don’t learn from history and we’re doomed to repeat it.�

Dr Books was a lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where she worked for 11 years from its inaugural year, earning her an Honorary Senior Fellowship.

She lived in Mountain Creek and Buderim for more than a decade and was a columnist for The Courier-Mail and social commentator on programs such as Sunrise.

After a cancer bout forced her to give up her academic career, she turned to full-time

writing. She now lives in Hobart, where she helps her husband in his brewery and distillery and spends vast amounts of time delving into historical research. “I spend a year, if not longer, really immersed in the period I’m writing about,� she says. “I change periods all the time. I educate myself, read lots of academic work on the period, I read fiction set in the period, I listen to the music, look at the art, read the poetry and literature of the period.

With The Darkest Shore, I had the added benefit of immersing myself in Gaelic, which was fabulous and fun and enriching.� It was during a trip to Scotland that she discovered the story of the witches of Pittenweem. “I really tried to honour the women.

It shows the power of love, it really does. “This is a story as much about female friendship and love and the bonds that endure and can triumph over evil. It’s brutal and bleak, but it’s also beautiful.�

WE LOVE OUR ABC The national broadcaster is not just a news outlet, it’s a vital public service that we need now more than ever before. But it’s not without its detractors and its survival is often threatened. My Weekly Preview explores these possible threats and why we need to protect our ABC for the good times and the bad. W

e are living through the worst crisis we have faced since WWII. Holding our hands throughout this surreal moment in time is our national broadcaster, the ABC. In a sea of fake news, clickbait and that coronavirus email from your uncle that sounded legit, the ABC is a beacon of dependability.

Hit with funding cuts and criticism during quieter times, the crucial role the ABC plays during times of crisis really comes to the fore. Walkely Award-winning journalist and ABC stalwart Quentin Dempster was due to visit Maleny in March to discuss the plight of the ABC. Like most public gatherings, the talk was cancelled.

But he’d still like to get an important message out: the ABC is more vital than ever before.

“Public trust and support for the ABC has never been higher,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “If ever there was a national disaster that indicated the value of the ABC, it was the bushfires in southeastern Australia. Queenslanders who suffer floods, fires and cyclones also know its value in disseminating public safety information.

“The ABC is now an industry leader in online. Look at the distribution of ABC

entertainment to children’s programming.

Mr Dempster recalls the days of old, when the ABC played a more direct role in children’s education and says with mass home schooling now happening, the ABC could deliver cost-effective primary and secondary education directly into all Australian homes.

But it all comes down to budget. Mr Dempster says the ABC is in dire need of a funding boost to keep doing what it does best. “The ABC faces Morrison Government funding cuts of $84 million over three years,” says Mr Dempster. “It’s what was called an indexation pause, which was really a piece of vindictive bastardry by Mitch Fifield, the former Minister for Communication.”

“It came at a time when the ABC needed to sustain itself, because it had already taken $254 million in operational funding cuts from Tony Abbot and Joe Hockey in 2014.”

While millions of Australians tune into the ABC or click on iView for drama, arts comedy, documentaries and kids’ shows, it’s the dependability of ABC news we’re most in need of in these uncertain times.

But what of the accusation often levelled at the ABC that it has a left-wing bias?

“At its heart, the ABC is a conservative, decent institution.

It is conservative in the sense of conserving the institutional strength of our democracy” Quentin Dempster, award-winning journalist

news through mobiles and devices. It’s a stunning success and it does it using existing human resources.

“Sometimes I think it’s too successful, because while Australians are there trusting it, particularly in times of natural disasters, News Corp get into the ears of politicians and complain. Sometimes I think if the ABC wasn’t so successful, it wouldn’t receive so much hostility from the other players understandably trying to make a quid in what is now a very difficult market.

“Everything is up in the air because Google and Facebook are so dominant in the ad market now,” Mr Dempster adds.

“Rod Sims from the ACCC recommended last year their market dominance be reined in somehow and the Morrison Government has given Google, Facebook and mainstream media owners about a year to work out better revenue sharing.”

While the commercial players punch on, the ABC continues to do its thing, follow its charter and pump out an incredible amount of quality content, from news and

We’re not a propaganda arm for the government. Like any journalist in a democracy, we’re still supposed to hold the government to account. And in an era of fake news, the ABC has been vindicated by its efforts to fact check. Of course, the ABC makes mistakes. It can get things wrong.

“But the beauty about the digital era is that inaccuracy can be quickly corrected.

As empowered taxpayers, the wonderful audience pulls you up immediately when you’ve made a mistake or misrepresented somebody. That’s a very good thing, not just for the ABC, but for all media.” myweeklypreview.com.au

ABC SUNSHINE COAST: HERE TO HELP IN A CRISIS

Annie Gaffney & Rob Blackmore Many Sunshine Coast locals will know the familiar voices of Annie Gaffney and Rob Blackmore from ABC Sunshine Coast Mornings and Breakfast shows.

Both say the ABC is playing a vital role reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our audience is relying on us more than ever before in what is such a rapidly unfolding situation,” Mr Blackmore says.

“Unlike the natural disasters we’ve been through before, the COVID-19 pandemic has no known end date, and for us as local broadcasters the tone of our programs has really changed to reflect that. It’s a different kind of emergency broadcasting. We’re doing our best to process all of this information quickly and some of the announcements can be confusing.”

Ms Gaffney says the ABC’s emergency broadcasting saves lives. “I’ve been involved in covering a number of emergency broadcasts,” she says. “The lovely thing about radio is we can connect to our audience at will in an emergency and we promise to do that. If our community is going through a hard time because of floods or fire, we promise to hold your hand.

“Down south, people were thanking the ABC and literally saying, ‘you saved my life’. It’s actually a privilege to be with people in that time of fear or anxiety and tell them to the best of our ability, it’s going to be okay.

“I’ve been on the Sunshine Coast 30 years now and I know it like the back of my

hand,” Ms Gaffney adds. “I can talk about roads and bridges. When people say, this bridge is flooded, I know where they’re talking about. When you’ve been in a place a long time, you’ve got a duty of care and a relationship with your audience. It becomes special; people trust you.”

Ms Gaffney says not a year has gone by during her 18 years with the ABC when she hasn’t been involved with an emergency broadcast, sometimes being called in the middle of the night to go back on air.

Rob Blackmore says the most reassuring part of working at the ABC is its editorial integrity, especially during times when misinformation is rampant.

“We have such a strict approach to our content,” he says. “Our editorial policies are huge. The independence, fairness, integrity, balance. People are grateful the ABC has those assurances.”

Mr Blackmore agrees the ABC’s role in emergency broadcasting is paramount.

“I think it’s the most important part of the work we do,” he says. “There’s nothing like knowing the information you’re providing to your audience could be saving lives and certainly keeping people out of danger.

“I’ve done cyclones, floods, fires in different parts of Queensland and away from the Sunshine Coast,” he adds. “All crises are all really similar in nature.

People want to know what the information is. It’s about being calm, not beating anything up, being accurate.

“You want the information to be double-checked, accurate and put across with a sense of perspective and calmness.

A lot of that comes with local knowledge and dealing with these situations time and time again and having a sense of who your community is.

“The ABC is a mainstay of Australia. It’s such an important cultural institution for the country. It’s the public broadcaster, a taxpayer-funded entity which is designed to be there for its community. I’d hate to think it would ever not be there.”

HOW TO IDENTIFY FAKE NEWS We are in the midst of a global pandemic and learning how to discern the difference between credible news and fake news has become, quite literally, a matter of life and death. Misinformation has spread online faster than the coronavirus. Here’s how to spot fact from fiction.

• Fake news websites are often designed to mimic credible sites. Click on the About Us page and learn what you can about the publisher. What is its mission statement? Has it used a dodgy logo designed to mimic that of a credible news organisation?

• Don’t be fooled by satirical news sites such as The Onion and The Betoota Advocate – they’re just for laughs.

• Who is the author of the story? Most credible journalists will have a body of work you can read online.

• If you notice multiple spelling errors, poor grammar, emojis or multiple exclamation marks, you are not on a credible news site. Keep scrolling.

• Check the date of the article. It could be an old story being recycled and taken out of context.

• Does the story quote experts in their field with credentials you can verify? ‘Chinese doctors’, ‘Taiwanese experts’ or ‘Harvard University professors’ are not verifiable sources. Look for real names and official titles.

• Does the story contain up-to-date and relevant statistics and data? Or is the

story merely an opinion masquerading as a news story?

• Approach what you read with a critical mindset. Does the article appear impartial or is it biased and what is its purpose?

• Be suspicious of emails or stories forwarded by friends and family members. If you’re not sure of their veracity, do some fact checking at FactCheck.org, International FactChecking Network, PolitiFact.com or Snopes.com.

• Google the story and see what other reputable news organisations have covered it. A truly newsworthy story will have been picked up by a variety of credible media organisations.

ental health services have experienced a rise in demand as Australians seek help during the coronavirus pandemic, with Lifeline preparing for a 25 per cent increase in contacts over the coming weeks and months.

Kids Helpline has recorded an additional 1519 phone, webchat and email contact attempts in the past

fortnight compared with the previous two weeks, with 461 involving mentions of COVID-19. Meanwhile, a Beyond Blue online discussion forum on coping with coronavirus is getting “unprecedented interest” with more than 21,000 views as of last Wednesday, while calls and emails about the virus are increasing.

All Australians will be able to consult their GP over the phone and access new coronavirus-specific mental health support under a $1.1 billion package.

The Federal Government is expanding Medicare subsidies for telehealth to the entire population, giving more money to domestic violence and mental health support services.

It is also providing $200 million to charities and community organisations who give emergency relief, such as food banks, and financial counselling.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says this latest round of spending aims to deal with the secondary effects of the health and economic crises the coronavirus is causing.

There is $669 million to Medicaresubsidised telehealth services, so people

can continue to have access to quality healthcare from home. “We are asking Australians to stay home, particularly older Australians, even more so. And we want to ensure that they can continue to get access to health care and health advice and support from GPs,” Mr Morrison says.

Another $150 million will boost programs already in place to combat domestic violence. This will include counselling, the 1800RESPECT domestic, family and sexual violence counselling service and MensLine Australia. Domestic violence services have warned of a likely spike in violence as people are forced indoors by the social distancing needed to stop the spread of the virus.

To bolster mental health, a new dedicated coronavirus wellbeing support line will be set up by Beyond Blue, funded with $10 million from the Federal Government and $5 million from Medibank.

It will help people who are concerned because they have been diagnosed with the disease, or are experiencing stress or anxiety due to employment changes, business closure, financial difficulties, family pressures or other challenges.

The government will also give existing mental health support line services, including Lifeline and Kids Helpline, a $14 million boost.

OIL IN TROUBLED WATERS

T

o reflect the current global environment, Ord Minnett has materially lowered its oil price forecasts, which has had a significant impact on earnings, free cash flow and valuation. Spot oil prices suggest potentially further downside risk, but we do not believe a $US30/bbl Brent oil price level is sustainable.

Overall, we see the sector as attractive for investors looking for long-term returns, although we note potential for further downside in the near term. With value everywhere, we believe companies with strong balance sheets and limited growth should be the priority.

Brent oil prices reached a 16-year low below $US30/bbl, with global demand likely to be materially affected by economic turmoil and OPEC+ failing to extend production cuts. With exploration and production companies signalling growth capital expenditure will be curtailed, it is clear current prices are unsustainable.

Using our normal methodology and noting the forward curve is now in contango*, we have lowered our price forecasts to $US42/bbl in CY20 and $US45/ bbl in CY21. We have also increased our weighted average cost of capital (WACC) estimates for our coverage universe to

account for increased balance sheet, free cash flow and earnings risk.

With all stocks trading well below our net present value estimates, we see significant value in the sector. We believe over the long run, investors can make strong returns. With economic conditions likely to worsen, however, returns could be a long time coming, and so in setting our preferences within the sector we have a greater bias towards those stocks with strong balance sheets, rather than those with better valuation metrics.

Our stock preferences are based on those with strong balance sheets. Among the big caps, our order of preferences is: 1) Santos (STO); 2) Beach Energy (BPT); 3) Origin Energy (ORG); 4) Oil Search (OSH); and 5) Woodside Petroleum (WPL). Within the smaller caps, our key preferences are: 1) Senex Energy (SXY); 2) Cooper Energy (COE); and 3) Carnarvon Petroleum (CVN).

The government has announced a number of measures in response to the coronavirus – a high level overview of these measures are detailed below: • The Federal Budget will be delayed until October 6, 2020.

• You may be able to access up to $10,000 from your super from mid-April and a further $10,000 after July 1, 2020 (for approximately three months) if you meet certain conditions.

• The government has reduced minimum pension drawings for certain types of income streams by 50 per cent for the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 financial years.

• From March 12 two $750 tax-free lump sum payments will be made available for eligible people who receive certain payments and have certain concession cards from Centrelink.

• From April 27, there will be a fortnightly Coronavirus Supplement of $550 for six months added to certain social security payments.

• There are a number of business-related measures that have been announced – business owners should speak with their accountants about their entitlement to each of these.

ATO ISSUES UPDATED TAX, SUPER LAW ADVICE New rules are now in place allowing early access to superannuation as thousands of Australians lose their jobs and livelihoods due to the economic impact of the coronavirus.

The Australian Taxation Office has updated its website with a ‘one-stop shop’ for advice on COVID-19 stimulus measures.

Those affected by COVID-19 will be able to access up to $10,000 of their super in 2019/20 and a further $10,000 in 2020/21.

They will not need to pay tax on those amounts and the withdrawal will not affect Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs payments.

From mid-April, eligible persons will be able to apply through the myGov website to access their superannuation before July 1, 2020. They will also be able to access up to a further $10,000 between July 1, 2020, and September 24, 2020.

ATO Commissioner Chris Jordan says many people are being financially impacted by the challenging economic conditions created by the spread of COVID-19. “Each of the measures have different timings, eligibility and processes. Some will be applied automatically and others will require an application, so I recommend heading to ato.gov.au/coronavirus to understand what is possible,” he says.

ustralians are being called to honour Anzac Day by standing at the end of their driveways for a minute’s silence, after public events were cancelled across the nation.

RSL Queensland says the display will send a powerful message of solidarity to Australia’s defence community after Anzac Day services, events and parades were cancelled amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

People can safely commemorate a different kind of dawn service by standing on their driveway or balcony at 6am and uniting in the Anzac spirit, RSL

Queensland state president Tony Ferris says. “This is an idea that has gathered momentum on social media, and we agree it’s a brilliant way to collectively honour the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of our service people,” he says.

The global teddy bear hunt movement connecting communities during the social-distancing lockdown is now bringing happiness to Sunshine Coast families.

It’s unknown where the trend began, but stuffed animals are popping up in gardens and front windows for children to spot during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on the popular children’s book by Michael Rosen, the concept is simple: anyone who wants to participate can place a teddy in a visible location on their property so families can go on a safe socialdistancing hunt from car windows or while out for a walk.

The Caloundra suburbs of Aura and Baringa have jumped on board with residents taking to Sunshine Coast community boards on Facebook to share their street addresses.

Everyone is encouraged to participate around the region.

ith social distancing and self-isolation now the norm, many families are finding themselves with more spare time than ever before. So, why not support our local grocers, stock up, and hit the kitchen to cook up a storm?

Kim McCosker, owner of 4 Ingredients Enterprises, says she has been inundated with requests for tinned food recipes that are great for the whole family.

“When life throws you a pandemic, there are a few pantry staples I reach for,’’ she tells My Weekly Preview. “A tin of chicken or tomato soup can create all sorts of pies, bakes and soups. Minced garlic and ginger last longer and are natural medicines.”

She also says frozen vegetables for added nutrition are a must, as well as plain and self-raising flour and long-life milk for pancakes, crepes, pizza bases biscuits and slices.

A tin of tomato soup, Ms McCosker says, can make Tomato Drummies, Chicken Tikka Masala and Macaroni Bake.

“My kids each have a fave and my hubby likes them all and so do I because they are quick and easy to make at the end of a busy day, and very economical (double bonus).”

And with such simple ingredients, Ms McCosker says it often means people can be more organised and make meals in advance.

“Pandemic or not, I often cook a lot on weekends for the busy week ahead.

I have three very active boys – we rarely have an afternoon free – so having meals that can be defrosted or leftovers that turned into a quick but different dinner are very useful. I also love my slow cooker at times like these. They lend themselves to larger quantities, so you often get two or three meals from one cook up using a slow cooker.”

MACARONI BAKE When you can typically buy a bag of macaroni from most supermarkets or your local corner store, it’s a great investment for only $1 to $1.50 per packet. Anything with macaroni not only pleases the kids, but the bank balance too.

Serves 4 • 4 cups cooked macaroni • 200g ham, sliced • 1 cup (100g) grated cheddar cheese • 400g can condensed tomato soup Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

In a large bowl, add the macaroni, ham and half the cheese.

Add the soup, season with cracked pepper and stir to combine.

Transfer to a casserole dish and top with remaining cheese.

Bake for 25 minutes or until golden and bubbling.

OPTIONAL: Add ½ cup of frozen mixed vegetables to the macaroni for additional nutritional value.

TOMATO DRUMMIES These are easy, economical and loved by the whole family.

Serves 4 • 1kg chicken drumsticks • 420g can condensed tomato soup • 40g packet French onion soup Preheat oven 180 degrees.

Trim excess fat from drumsticks and place in a large ovenproof dish.

Stir together the tomato soup, French onion soup and ½ cup water and pour over the legs.

Season with cracked pepper.

Bake for 1 hour or until the chicken is cooked through.

Serve drizzled with the yummy sauce this dish produces.

LESSONS LEARNED

ON THE TOWN

With three young children to home school, Sami Muirhead has discovered that a teaching gig is much harder than it looks.

Richard O’Leary remembers New York, which he visited just before the city that never sleeps was forced to shut down.

T

his working from home gig is full of potholes and parental stress, ain’t it? I home school until lunch, then dash to work where I have a radio studio to myself.

I feel pretty lucky to have a job during such crazy times. After a morning of trying to teach three kids under nine, I am more than happy to sit in a room that literally has padded walls.

I thought I would be a really good teacher. I even studied a year of teaching at university before I decided I wanted to be a lawyer. I never finished that second degree either, after opting instead to manage a cafe. The career yo-yo continued until at long last I did finally become a journalist.

So, I am quite stunned to discover I am a very average teacher. I realised this when I gave my boys the finger when I discovered they had thrown about 3398 marbles onto the neighbour’s roof. Yep. I flipped my kids the bird. With both hands too.

You see I like kids. I even like my own kids, on a normal day. I often look at the teachers at school and think what a blissful way to spend a day gently playing with these sweet little souls enriching their minds. Wasn’t I wrong! I am a lousy teacher! By the end of the first day I should have been fired for drinking on the job. By the end of the second day I had given up trying to do some of my work on the side, and after I heard “Mum!” for the 347th time that hour I seriously considered

hiding in my car. Between helping them log on to computers and cutting up fruit for brain food breaks and trying to Google what the heck an irregular polygon is, I was going loopy.

Margaret Atwood has some tips on the WorkLife podcast when it comes to things you ‘don’t do’ from home. This list vexed me. Apparently working from bed is asking for all sorts of trouble. Social media is a big no-no. And Margaret wants us to get out of our pyjamas. Let me tell you I put a bra on most days because the kids are video conferring in this crazy new world we are in but from the waist down I am all about comfort, girlfriend.

As for the biggest ‘don’t do’ on the list – it is no TV. But how can I track the apocalypse if I follow all these rules?

I took a work conference call and threatened my kids with bloody murder if they made so much as a peep while I was on the phone. The little monkeys decided to use masking tape to cover their own lips and eyes. They looked like they needed to be rescued by Liam Neeson. When I was trying to ignore them and act professional they decided to get the hose and wet me in a naughty bid for attention. Of course they thought this was hysterical. Luckily I had my bra on or the neighbours would have thought it was a wet T-shirt competition.

So good luck everyone! These here sure are crazy times! Stay safe. Stay dry. And try not to give your kids the finger.

ow’s that song go? “I wanna wake up, in a city that doesn’t sleep; and find I’m king of the hill; top of the heap…”

Unfortunately, like many other places across the globe, New York has now gone into partial hibernation to tackle the coronavirus.

I was lucky enough to visit the Big Apple just before it pulled the shutters down on Broadway, the National Basketball League and its bounty of museums and art galleries.

But it wasn’t the big-ticket items which made the trip so enjoyable (although seeing To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway and absorbing a dozen or so Van Goghs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art were special moments). Just like anywhere else in the world, it was the quirks and curiosities that made my stay one to remember.

Now I have read the NYT most days for a fair few years now, but it’s always on a screen. To be able to go and buy it at a newsagent’s, feel it, smell it, tuck it under my arm and whisk it away was an entirely different experience.

On more than a few occasions I would duck out and plonk myself in a cafe – I warmed to the American percolated coffee after a few days, as paying the equivalent of $10 Australian for an espresso got old real quick – and sink into

the politics, science, arts and sports pages.

It was paradise to read about the Super Tuesday Democratic primaries while sipping a brew with New Yorkers bustling and bickering and bagelling in the background. But I didn’t spend all my time reading about the place; most of the time I walked around and soaked up the New York experience.

It’s a place where everyone can be themselves, including that young man who wore the forest-green corduroy suit in the morning rush hour, flanked by

A place which was great to visit, while at the same time reminding me why I’m so lucky to call the Sunshine Coast home.

“We’re trying to limit the gathering of

people in large numbers that can relate to the transmission of that virus,” the Prime Minister told reporters at a conference on Tuesday night.

Executive director of economic research at REA Group Cameron Kusher says there is no evidence to suggest the market will substantially slow down, but it is to be expected.

There would also be opportunity for the industry to evolve, Mr Kusher adds.

Mr Kusher says while confidence is understandably lacking at the moment, he anticipates the property market will bounce back when coronavirus has started to ease.

“Once confidence returns and people can go back to living their lives, I suspect the housing market will be strong,” Mr Kusher says.

Boy, I must admit that I am fully stoked I got to snowboard before this lockdown. I did also score a rescue puppy last week so that is breaking the boredom.

Having a puppy is like Christmas – she leaves me little presents everywhere! I constantly think my coffee machine is leaking all over the floor. I am sure all will be okay in a few months… bloody hope so!

Now, someone did not read my column last week where I asked people to be “kind and cool”. You know who you are. While I don’t like crowds of people in the surf, everyone has a right to connect to the ocean. We are here at this moment for a split second, so don’t act like an idiot.
