I

’ve never struggled to put into words how I feel. And, each week when I sit down to write this column, the words always flow.

Sadly, not this time. Really, what is there to say?

Life has changed dramatically for each and every one of us in such a short amount of time. And, this COVID-19 crisis that we now find ourselves embroiled in, is not something we could have predicted.

It’s surreal, devastating and heartbreaking.

In the past few days, we have watched as so many of our loyal supporters – local business people who have served their community for

years – have been forced to close their doors. Our government and medical leaders are in a day-by-day fight to protect our country. In an attempt to save lives and halt the spread, there really is no other option.

This does not in any way reduce the stress, grief or pain employers and employees are feeling.

What we can do, is continue to support those local people who are still trading by following sensible social distancing practices.

We can also look for the positives – these might seem few and far between, but look towards your family and friends for support, love and guidance. Encourage gratitude for those things we normally take for granted. Until next week, please stay well, and follow the health advice.

How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast? We lived here in the ’80s but moved to Brisbane for work. We came back permanently in 2012.

Your greatest regret? Not learning to fly.

What achievement are you most proud of? Getting the 2020 Sunshine Coast Senior Citizen Of The Year was a real highlight. I was shocked and lost for words, but so happy to be recognised for my achievements with the charity.

There were 23 other nominees on that stage that all deserved it as much as me.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Double Island Point is just magical. It is good for the mind and soul to just go there, have a surf and a picnic.

Where do you take visitors when they come to the Coast? Everywhere – they should see it all.

If you could change one thing on the Coast what would it be? I campaigned to build rock groyne entries to the Pumicestone Passage at Caloundra in the ’80s but council felt they knew better. They then lost all of Happy Valley and the end of Bribie and ruined the access to the passage. I know you can’t go back in time, but that would have been so good for Caloundra.

Best day in your life? My wife took me to Las Vegas and

Why was it a turning point? The charity allowed me to change people’s lives for the better. Sixteen years on and it still consumes my life, which fulfils me in so many ways.

You are happiest when? I’m in the water at Double Island Point.

Bev and I go up there a lot. It’s our ‘happy place’.

What frustrates you the most? I tend to yell at the computer regularly when it goes slow or freezes, so maybe technology frustrates me the most.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I have a very moderate nature and tend to find ways to handle most things in life without getting frustrated.

Luckily, I have a mate who is an IT genius and fixes things for me.

If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything what would it be? Never take people for granted and always enjoy your work.

Tea or coffee? Tea. I don’t drink coffee.

NRL or AFL and who do you follow? Both. I love the Broncos and the Lions.

STAY LOCAL SHOP LOCAL Here at My Weekly Preview, we are big advocates of shopping locally.

As we navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic together, it’s more important than ever before to support local business.

T

hese are unprecedented times and the effects are being felt not only here on the Sunshine Coast, but across the nation and worldwide. On Monday, Australian pubs, licensed clubs, casinos, gyms, cinemas, indoor sports venues and churches were forced to close across Australia in a bid to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state and territory leaders agreed on Sunday night to a staged process starting with a shutdown of “principal places of social gathering”.

Restaurants and cafes are restricted to takeaway only.

Mr Morrison said the step had to be taken because Australians were not adequately sticking to rules around social distancing. It was reported that as of Sunday, virus cases were doubling every three days.

In addition, the federal government also announced a second round of stimulus measures worth $66 billion in hope of easing the country’s dive into recession.

AAP reports that the government will temporarily double the Jobseeker Payment – previously known as Newstart – and make it easier for casuals and sole traders to access it; give a second round of $750 cash payments to those who are eligible; and significantly expand the already announced cash flow injection into small businesses, which will now get

at least $20,000 and up to $100,000 each.

With COVID-19 impacting all areas of our lives, and with strict government measures being put in place and reviewed daily, there is no time like the present to come together as a community.

The Sunshine Coast is a region heavily reliant on tourism and small business.

And the message is clear – where possible, and when safe to do so, let’s shop and support our local businesses, even if it is online.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says many businesses would have to make tough decisions, but it’s vital to continue

business models, with some already having to close due to recent government restrictions.

“There are measures in place from the federal government and state government to keep businesses afloat and I urge owners to seek these incentives out. The last thing we want to see is job losses, so the stimulus packages will hopefully ensure businesses can survive the interim.

“While we all need to be vigilant about our health and the health of others, it’s important to continue to support small business where possible and within the Queensland Health guidelines.”

Accommodation venues will feel the full impacts of the economic flow-on effects. In Mooloolaba, the popular Mantra hotel is doing everything it can to keep valued guests comfortable and safe.

“Given our obsession around customers, we are closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak and we are working to implement measures to minimise risk of transmission, focusing on trying to keep our hotels, employees, and guests in a safe, inclusive and healthy environment,” an Accor Pacific spokesperson says.

As businesses mould to the changing times, Ms Zubrinich has this message: “This is a good time for businesses to be inventive in the way they deliver their services, and those that don’t start addressing these changes will struggle even more in the coming months.

“Each industry will face different challenges and it’s about being innovative and responding to market needs.”

Ms Zubrinich reiterated the importance of spending locally so small businesses could stay afloat and equally important, keep people employed.

Residents are encouraged to support local grocers, butchers, bakers and retail outlets, while following health guidelines.

And, with many of these businesses coming up with alternative shopping methods, such as delivery and online options, even those in self-isolation can safely continue to shop.

“While everyone will be feeling the financial pressure, the only way the average person can stimulate the economy is through spending,” Ms Zubrinich says.

“So, while people might be wary about their expenditure, they can still be smart by shopping local when they can and investing back into the community, because spending is one of the key drivers to stimulating the economy. If the average person spends, then businesses can pay their staff and keep people employed.”

THINGS TO KNOW

1. Social distancing includes ways to stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases.

2. At home – avoid handshaking and kissing, practice good hygiene, regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces. If someone is sick, reduce the number of carers, keep the sick person’s room closed with a window open, wear surgical masks and protect vulnerable family members.

3. In the workplace – stay home if you are sick, no handshaking, defer large meetings, have lunch at your desk or outside, rather than in the lunch room, open windows for more ventilation, work from home when possible, hold external meetings via video conferencing or phone call.

4. In schools – if your child is sick, don’t send them to school, sanitise hands regularly, remind them of the importance of handwashing, encourage children to keep space between each other.

MAJOR CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT ANNOUNCED FOR MAROOCHYDORE ROAD A John Holland/Seymour Whyte joint venture has secured the construction contract for the $300-million Bruce Highway Upgrade – Maroochydore Road and Mons Road Interchanges project. Deputy prime minister Michael McCormack says the upgrades of the interchanges are part of the 15-year, $12.6 billion Bruce Highway Upgrade Program. Transport and Main Roads minister Mark Bailey says, “The Bruce plays a major role in our state’s economy and this is an exciting opportunity for local contractors to once again be involved. To make sure we’re building for a growing community, we’re constructing new two-way service roads on the western and eastern side of the highway plus pedestrian and bike connectivity through the Maroochydore Road interchange to the eastern service road.”

Work will begin on the project in the coming months.

$80,000 Spicers Retreats launched its Lend a Hand for the Land campaign in November last year to raise funds to support farmers. The group donated 10 per cent of accommodation sales booked in November 2019 for stays in January 2020 to Rural Aid, whose range of initiatives, including Buy-A-Bale and Farm Army, provide important support to our farming community. A spokesperson for Spicers Retreats says the campaign was well received by all guests, and raised $80,000. “Other companies that we partner with also made substantial donations for the cause,” the spokesperson says. “Since we opened our doors in 2002, we have worked with local farmers to offer our guests a truly unique experience, embracing a genuine paddock-to-plate philosophy. We wanted to support these farmers that we rely heavily on to supply our restaurants and Rural Aid seemed like the perfect fit to enable us to do so.”

BLOOMHILL CANCER CARE’S URGENT NEED FOR DONATIONS Bloomhill Cancer Care has launched an emergency appeal following the COVID-19 outbreak. Bloomhill CEO Chris Franck says he and his senior management colleagues “have had to face up to some very confronting realities in the light of recent community responses to the coronavirus.

As a result, I have realised I desperately need to launch an Emergency Appeal – Coronavirus Response… The reality is Bloomhill Cancer Care is now facing an unprecedented financial crisis.” Mr Franck says uncertainty around the group’s upcoming events and the impact on op shop revenue means much of Bloomhill’s income is at risk. “If we don’t act now, this pandemic will have an unimaginable impact on our cancer care services and community outreach programs. This will have direct flow-on impacts to the health and safety of some of our most vulnerable community members – people with cancer.” Mr Franck asks people to donate and funds will go directly to critical services. Sunshine Coast Council endorsed $1.275 million from the Australian Government in bushfire assistance funds. The funds will be used to rebuild affected infrastructure and strengthen community resilience.

“These plans had been developed through extensive consultation with local emergency services, government and community partners and First Nations representatives,” Mayor Jamieson says. The Program of Works addresses a number or areas and includes the upgrade and rebuilding of the local disaster co-ordination centre, a disaster resilience community media campaign, a disaster management and evacuation centre material storage and logistics centre and a region-wide disaster management conference. THE EVENTS CENTRE CALOUNDRA IS TEMPORARILY CLOSING

The Events Centre, Caloundra will close until May 4. Individual ticket holders for events which were due to take place in March and April have been offered a refund or the opportunity to reschedule. The Events Centre management says the decisive action was not taken lightly. In a press statement, it said, “The Events Centre has been closely monitoring the evolving situation in regards to COVID-19.

Following current advice from the Department of Health, we have taken the decision to close The Events Centre to the public from midnight tonight, until May 4, 2020.

Sunny Street to go national

A free medical service for the homeless and vulnerable of our society is needed now more than ever. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

n the midst of the chaos, confusion and panic of the past few weeks, it’s heartening to read a good news story about the kindness of the human spirit during times of adversity.

Founded on the Sunshine Coast in July 2018, Sunny Street is a mobile healthcare service for those sleeping rough or doing it tough and it has been such a success, it’s about to be expanded nationally.

From humble beginnings at Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre, Sunny Street is set to launch in Logan, Ipswich, Gympie, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Townsville.

The co-founders of this incredible service are medical director, Dr Nova Evans and nursing director, Sonia Goodwin and they have, not surprisingly, been run off their feet of late with the COVID-19 virus.

“We are incredibly concerned about the patients we look after, given the complexity of their health issues and their disengagement from the mainstream health system,” says Dr Evans. “They are a higher risk of not only contracting COVID-19, but becoming unwell.

“There are 3.24 million people living below the poverty line in Australia,” she adds. “This includes 774,000 children.

“Some of these Australians are homeless or living in extremely impoverished and overcrowded dwellings, and they experience significant barriers to accessing healthcare.”

Ms Goodwin says, “There are a lot of reasons why people can’t access primary healthcare in traditional medical settings, whether it be transport, feeling overwhelmed by the system or losing hope.

“At Sunny Street, we remove barriers by going to where homeless and vulnerable individuals are.

“You don’t need an appointment or Medicare card, you don’t need to pay, and your consultation doesn’t have a time limit.

If patients need further medical care, we make sure they get it.”

Sunny Street runs its mobile outreach health clinics out of community centres, unused office spaces storage rooms and even closets, offering free medical care and a sympathetic ear.

“On the Sunshine Coast, each clinic runs for approximately two-and-a-half hours and during that time, we’ll look after anywhere from six to 20 people. In the last six months, we have had over 6000 conversations and consultations across southeast Queensland.”

In a recent survey of their patients, 92 per cent of respondents said they avoided having to go to hospital because of a Sunny Street clinic and 100 per cent of respondents said they feel like the Sunny Street team listened to them and they were treated with respect.

Sunny Street is a labour of love for both Dr Evans and Ms Goodwin, a project they were driven to create after they both resigned from their jobs with Queensland Health on the same day two years ago.

“The main reason we resigned was we wanted to make an impact in our community and we desperately wanted to

help people in need,” says Dr Evans. “We realised we could do more outside the system than in the system. We looked at the data around homelessness and realised the second largest cohort of people experiencing homelessness was children under 12. Sonia and I have eight children and three grandchildren between us, and that sealed the deal for us.

“We thought, we’re a doctor and a nurse – we’ll get a truck and go out to the streets and look after people.”

Dr Evans and Ms Goodwin have donated $50,000 of their own funds towards running Sunny Street, with Dr Evans now planning to sell her home.

“Sonia and I have made massive sacrifices both personally and professionally to start this organisation, but it’s the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done,” says Dr Evans.

“The clinic work is very challenging, very demanding of our hearts, but when we go through tough times, we just focus on the patients.

“It’s a really challenging time for everyone, but at the end of the day, Sunny Street is not about the money. It’s about making sure our patients always know Sunny Street and our volunteers are there for them and genuinely care about them.”

Sunny Street is planning to become Australia’s first nationally coordinated healthcare service for people experiencing homelessness and vulnerability. A GoFundMe campaign is underway to raise $80,000 to enable the service to expand and donations are urgently needed.

Sami Muirhead shares 10 of the best coronavirus memes on the internet and says it’s the Australian way to laugh in times of crisis.

Nobody likes to be lied to, especially in an intimate relationship. But, writes Suzanne Loubris, we don’t want brutal honesty either.

I

cannot even begin to get my head around how fast our lives have changed courtesy of coronavirus, or as my young son calls it, The Corona.

An open letter to The Corona from all Sunny Coasters would run along the lines of: Dear Mr Corona – Please leave now as we all hate you. Signed by everyone.

Phrases such as social distancing and self-isolation have jumped into our vocabulary faster than toilet paper is running out in the shops. Our loo paper situation is looking a little grim, but I live in hope some boss somewhere is making great decisions and has doubled down on delivering our dunny paper.

I thought we needed some light relief in this week’s column. What could possibly be funny about a global pandemic that has altered the very fabric of our existence and in one fell swoop has shut down most of the things we hold dear, from sports to movies to music to the very notion of human interaction? How could we make jokes in times like these?

That is exactly what Australians do, or else we would go crazy with worry.

And do not even get me started on the anxious backflips in my stomach whenever someone mentions homeschooling to me. So, I have gathered what I believe to be the funniest of the memes doing the rounds.

Meme 1: All sporting events have been cancelled, however live boxing can still be

seen at Coles, Woolies and Aldi.

Meme 2: I went to the toilet at a restaurant. I washed my hands, opened the door with my elbow, I raised the toilet seat with my foot, I turned on the faucet with a tissue and then opened the door to leave with my elbow and when I returned to my table, I realised I forgot to pull up my pants.

Meme 3: They said a mask and gloves were enough to go to the grocery store to get supplies. They lied. Everyone else had pants on.

Meme 4: Homeschooling is going well.

Two students suspended for fighting and one teacher fired for drinking on the job.

Meme 5: With supermarkets sold out of pasta, mince and canned tomatoes, it leads me to believe the only thing Australians can cook is spag bol!

Meme 6: The Australian chief medical officer encourages everyone to avoid all hugs, kisses and signs of affection. Married couples should just continue as usual.

Meme 7: Yeah, I still have not decided where to go for Easter. I am debating between the bedroom or the living room.

Meme 8: Apparently, this year is being written by Stephen King.

Meme 9: I need to know where Betty White is during all this. Is she safe? Does she have toilet paper?

And lastly: For the first time in history you can save the humanity by doing nothing and lying in front of the TV. Don’t stuff it up!

ying – it’s a controversial topic.

Which lies are allowed and which aren’t? Yeah, I know, none. I have heard too many times that people will not stand for dishonesty.

But how many relationships are successful because of a finely honed skill in lying? Society is fabricated on a foundation of lies and dishonesty. Hard to believe, I know.

I am an extremely straightforward, blunt and honest South African woman. It is a rare breed of human who finds my honesty ‘refreshing’ as opposed to obnoxious and repellent. I speak to people of all sexual orientations and ages. It is commonly understood among the men of my world that if their female partner asks them for their opinion on an outfit, they have diddly-squat chance of coming out of the situation in one piece unless they lie.

“Yes you look lovely in that; no it doesn’t make you look fat; yes you should buy it.”

It is an unlikely scenario where a man would be free to say, “You look terrible in that; you should burn it; yes, you look fat in that; in fact the pants don’t make your arse look big, it is big; no you can’t buy it, it’s too expensive; you have three already; and you don’t need another pair of shoes”.

Men have told me they stopped going shopping for clothes because when their opinion was asked, it was usually ignored.

Now ladies here’s the interesting thing – you want men to be honest with you, but

if they are, how many of you will punish them? The silent treatment? Maybe a little withdrawal of affection?

Ladies, you are all honest aren’t you?

You never fake an orgasm, put makeup on before your guy wakes up, wear a push-up bra, spandex or high heels, or use Botox.

You are completely honest about who and what you are. You never say “oh this old thing, I have had it in the wardrobe for ages” or “it was on sale” or “I don’t mind all the annoying; irritating things you do”.

Maybe this is a bit harsh, but where is

I agree that lying about having sex with someone else [assuming that it isn’t an open relationship] is not cool. But I have met many couples who have come through affairs and mistakes and their relationship is stronger and so much more meaningful. Some people forgive, make changes and move on and others seek the answer to why things broke down. People grow up, they learn and cement their relationships in a whole new way.

COMMUNITY RALLYING SUPPORT AMIDST CORONAVIRUS CRISIS While the novel coronavirus pandemic has the world in its grip, many Sunshine Coast residents continue to take it in their stride.

From Facebook community pages to shop local campaigns, the community is coming together during this time of crisis.

Whether it’s helping an elderly neighbour source their groceries, or sharing words of support, it’s the little everyday moments that will get us all through this time of great adversity.

Buderim mum Bronwyn Delaivuna of the Everyday Fifo Wife blog is doing her bit to spread the messages of support while people are in isolation using the hashtag #lockdownfunk, which has gone viral.

Another former Coast family has started a Facebook group, called Corona Free Zone, with the aim of sharing positive stories. Whether that be the joy of the birth of a new baby, or someone working on starting their own business.

The Sunshine Coast Council has also jumped on-board, encouraging positivity and digital connectivity, asking residents to “look out for their neighbours – particularly those who are most vulnerable – and show that community spirit for which our residents are renowned”.

Launching the #covidkindness platform last Friday, Mayor Mark Jamieson said the community was known for its generous reputation.

The platform will explore weekly themes to encourage residents to stay connected, informed and help combat social isolation, loneliness and community disconnection. It also promotes the use of specially designed postcards to communicate with neighbours.

“What we’re asking people to do is please reach out and check on your neighbours, especially our older neighbours,” Mayor Jamieson says.

“It could be something as simple as leaving one of these postcards in your neighbour’s mailbox and offering to purchase a few groceries for them if they’re in social isolation, helping to put their bins out or even just writing down your phone number so they have someone to call.

“Now more than ever, we must look out for the most vulnerable in our community and think locally in every decision we make.”

2020 NAPLAN TESTS CANCELLED School students will not face national literacy and numeracy testing in 2020 because of the spread of coronavirus.

Education ministers made the decision to bin the NAPLAN tests at a meeting on last week. The exams were scheduled for May. The ministers said cancellation would help teachers and principals â&#x20AC;&#x153;focus on the wellbeing of students and continuity of education, including potential online and remote learningâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Further, the impact of responses to the COVID-19 virus may affect the delivery of NAPLAN testing, including the operation of centralised marking centres and the implications for nationally comparable data if an insufficient number of students are available to do the test,â&#x20AC;? they said in a statement.

But they reiterated the strong medical advice that schools should remain open for now. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Education departments and systems will continue to closely monitor health advice and work with schools to ensure appropriate support for students and staff as the response to COVID-19 develops,â&#x20AC;? they said.

The cancellation also means testing of the expanded online NAPLAN platform, supposed to start next week, now wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen.

In 2019, the first widespread trial of NAPLAN online was plagued by technical issues, with many students unable to complete their tests first go. Some states have questioned the usefulness of NAPLAN, with Nwe South Wales, Queensland and Victoria reviewing whether the standardised testing gives parents and teachers diagnostic information in the most efficient way.

But Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan has previously defended it, saying the tests did provide valuable information.

Parents logging on to the MySchool website should find it easier to make decisions about their childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education after the site had its first comprehensive overhaul.

The body in charge of the website and the national testing data it records hopes the streamlined look and new methods used will also end school-versus-school comparisons.

Previously, MySchool showed individual school data, including average NAPLAN results, and compared it with 60 other schools around the country that had a similar socio-economic make-up. Now, it will instead compare a schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s results with all students across Australia who come from a similar background.

Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA) head David de Carvalho says this was done to ensure comparisons made between schools were as fair as possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a substantial change in response to a number of concerns that have been raised over the last few years in relation to the way the presentation of the NAPLAN data on MySchool may have been contributing to the NAPLAN itself being considered more high stakes than it should be.â&#x20AC;?

In developing the changes, the authority held eight focus groups with parents around the country and found that, for many, a comparison with 60 other unknown but similar schools wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that helpful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The schools they were interested in comparing were usually only â&#x20AC;Ś a handful of three or four in their local area and they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lose that capability from the changes that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made,â&#x20AC;? Mr de Carvalho says.

ACARA has made a video to help people understand the changes to the site. It will also keep tabs on feedback from parents, teachers and principals and may make further tweaks before the 2021 data is added.

TECHNOLOGY IS ENHANCING LEARNING AND COMMUNITY AT PACIFIC LUTHERAN COLLEGE This term, staff and students have worked creatively with technology to enhance their learning and preserve community connection at Pacific Lutheran College.

In a learning context, digital technologies have added to the breadth of opportunities available to Pacific students.

Through an external training provider, two Year 12 students are currently undertaking a dual-course Certificate II in Tourism and Certificate III Events through virtual reality. Each Monday, the students attend a virtual auditorium where their course content is delivered live by a teacher. Both students and the teacher have avatars so they

can interact virtually through their headsets.

Student Holly Broadstock says she is enjoying the course so far. “It’s been really fun. I feel like I’m in a real classroom. I can choose a seat, put my hand up to ask questions and engage with the other students in the room,” she adds.

Pacific Lutheran College has also embraced the opportunity to engage with a variety of other digital platforms to support important parts of the college’s culture.

Weekly assemblies and chapels are being delivered digitally with great success.

Pacific Lutheran College principal Dr Bronwyn Dolling says it had been really heartening to feel the strength of connection from prep right through to Year 12. “By delivering assemblies and chapels digitally, students are exploring

key threads and themes in smaller pastoral care or class groups,” she says.

“The sense of engagement with the digital resources is very effective and students and staff are enjoying the connection.”

any people who are excessive snorers or who have been told they stop breathing in their sleep have gone on to be diagnosed with sleep apnoea. A lot of these have then started undergoing CPAP therapy. Although most feel the benefits of restored energy and feeling good again, some struggle to get used to therapy, have old equipment that needs replacing and some, without the proper support, may even stop therapy completely.

If left untreated effectively, sleep apnoea can lead to an increased risk of stroke and other heart problems, type 2 diabetes, major lack of energy, depression and more. CPAP therapy needs to be looked at as more than a cure for

snoring, and there is no better time to reach out for the help needed to get your mojo back again than right now.

A home care package or NDIS funding may be used to fund the replacement of old equipment.

NEW FUNDING ROUND ANNOUNCED FOR AUSTRALIANS LIVING WITH A DISABILITY Australians living with a disability will benefit from new funding after the opening of a grant round which will offer up to $85 million to organisations across the country.

The Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Stuart Robert, this month announced that applications are now open for a new grant round under the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program.

“ILC programs are designed to complement each other to ensure people with disability are getting the best opportunity to participate in their communities,” says Mr Robert.

“This new grant round focuses on individual capacity building to enable people with disability, as well as their carers and families, to build their skills through access to peer support and mentoring.”

The grant round will focus on organisations run by and for people with disability, carers and families as well as organisations that seek to improve the outcomes for specific communities – such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Applications are now open and will close on April 22.

Successful recipients are expected to be announced in July 2020.

As the coronavirus continues to spread, I want to take a moment to let you know what Children’s Therapy Centre is doing in response.

But first, I would like to thank families for being so thoughtful about the health of your children and their attendance at therapy sessions.

Parents and carers are really leading the way in knowing what is best for their family. We have received many phone calls from families talking over their situation so they can make sensible and informed decisions.

Children’s Therapy Centre is a people organisation. The health and wellbeing of our clients and staff comes first. We recognise that some of our clients have underlying health vulnerabilities that require us to be extra careful. We are monitoring the situation daily and implementing strategies to help protect against the spread of COVID-19, while at the same time ensuring continuity of services for children.

If clients are sick, we offer tele-health services via Zoom, Skype or FaceTime. Our foaming soaps are also a bit hit with the kids as they wash their hands before and after their session.

We have social stories in our wait rooms to help children understand infection control practices. Many children are very concerned and social stories help them to make sense of their situation.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT… AND SO IS THE LOCATION House and land packages are attracting a mix of buyers to the Sunshine Coast. We find out why. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

N

ew house and land packages on the Sunshine Coast are offering an affordable option for a range of buyers. But what is making them so appealing and who’s snapping them up?

Bevan Horsnel of Prime Property, Sunshine Coast says there is a variety of different approaches from interstate buyers in particular. “Some know the area well from holidaying on the Coast for years and are happy to pick the location, buy a property first, rent it out and then move into it eventually. Others who are moving on the Coast’s great reputation are a little more circumspect and will rent for six months prior to taking the plunge.”

Anthony Demiris, development manager for Avid’s Harmony in Palmview, is also seeing this. “For those that have moved interstate, within-state or internationally to the Coast, it’s typical for these residents to rent first. They fall in love with where they want to buy before making the decision to purchase.”

However, for people who are living in closer proximity to the Coast, Paul Angell, principal of First National Coastal says the buying decision is quicker.

“Often buyers who are living within an hour or two, and are considering a move to the Coast, will often buy straightup as they will already know the areas that interest them,” Mr Angell says.

“Southern capitals in particular hold such high values that a property on the Coast, in a popular suburb, is commonly a fraction of the price for a similar house down

Peter and Marina Gray south, making them incredibly attractive,” Mr Horsnel says.

“We are noticing growth across the board, which has been sustained for some time on the Coast. The large amount of infrastructure being put into the Coast is helping enormously with current and future jobs.”

Mr Demiris shares this view, “There’s no doubt the Sunshine Coast offers an enviable lifestyle in a stunning location, but more recently opportunities to advance careers and education have played a key role.”

But it’s not just price and job opportunities luring people to the sunny state. Mr Horsnel adds that the Coast also provides a sea change for people wanting to escape the

bustle of other cities. “There are many older buyers who are moving to be closer to family, but just as many moving from the capital cities looking to get out of the rat-race and get some work-life balance.”

Mr Angell adds, “Often it is proximity to the beach plus less traffic and stress that draws people to relocate to the Sunshine Coast.”

And as beachside stock remains tightly held, driving prices up, house and land packages in master plannedcommunities such as Palmview, Mr Demiris says are proving to be attractive for buyers. “Masterplanned communities are offering so much more than ever before, which is helping potential buyers make the decision to buy into a new emerging community rather than an established one.

Palmview is one of the country’s fastest growing suburbs.”

Evan Aldridge, Sekisui House project director, says interest in their project is based on a number of factors including privacy, aesthetics and amenities. “Buyer feedback has noted privacy, security as well as well landscaped streets have been key factors in purchasing in the estate. The estate is also ideally located close to Coolum and Yaroomba Beaches, the Coolum shopping centre as well as local cafes and restaurants.”

Mr Horsnel agrees that house and land communities are drawcards, particularly for people buying their first home.

“Harmony and Aura are definitely attracting the firsthomebuyer and investor demographic looking to get into the Coast at ‘ground level’ pricing,” Mr Horsnel says.

NEW CARPARK COMMENCES AT MAROOCHYDORE CITY CENTRE

C

onstruction of a new carpark that will accommodate more than 200 vehicles in stage one of the new Maroochydore City Centre is now underway.

Local firm Hall Contracting will carry out the construction and has engaged a range of local suppliers and sub-contractors to work on the carpark, which is expected to be completed by June this year.

Hall Contracting project manager Greg Busse says the sealed carpark will accommodate more than 200 car spaces, including disabled access and motorbike parking.

“We’ve had some good weather lately and we now have our earth-

moving machinery on site and will be working to ensure the project is completed on time,” he says.

SunCentral Maroochydore CEO John Knaggs says the new carpark is a welcome addition to the infrastructure provided in the new City Centre.

“This carpark is an important interim step in advance of the planned multi-deck carparks for the city centre,” he says. “We anticipate this carpark will accommodate staff and visitors to the Foundation Place building, which local developer Evans Long anticipates will be completed by late 2020.

“A number of other new buildings are also set to commence

construction soon, so this new carpark – together with more than 90 two-hour timed on-street carparks – will serve these requirements, as well as for those who attend events which take place on site within the MET precinct,” Mr Knaggs says.

The recent installation of 156 pre-cast modular marine concrete structures at the base of the waterway in the new Maroochydore City Centre has received a tick of approval following a visit by its designer, Melbourne-based Reef Design Lab director Alex Goad.

“I took the opportunity to inspect the project on a recent visit to the Sunshine Coast and I was really impressed with the design and treatment of the whole waterway precinct,” Mr Goad says.

“The area looks fantastic with its revetment wall treatment, and timber viewing decks – along with the underwater structures – have created an environment which we believe will enable local marine life to flourish.

“The modular structures range from 600 millimetres cubed to 1000 millimetres cubed and have a range of overhangs and caves to replicate the types of habitats found in an intertidal estuary such as rocky ledges and logs. The structures have been laid in clusters on the bed of the waterway to create a ‘mini-city’, which enables fish to feed, lay eggs and protect themselves from predators.

“I believe this is the first time an estuarine habitat project of this type has been undertaken on the Sunshine Coast and it’s great to have the opportunity to build up habitat in the waterways of a project of this scale” Mr Goad adds.

Hey crazy kids. Wow, things are getting rea! That said, how great was last weekend? Hope you all managed to keep your distance and enjoy the amazing weather, waves and remembered to share. Me? Well I paddled out at 5.30am and scored three amazing waves one after another. I thought boy, what a start to a session. Then I decided to paddle in and leave more waves for everyone else. Why would I do that? Things are pretty bad for a lot of people, so share the love and spirit as we are all in it together. Be kind to each other and respect the rules.
