INGREDIENTS

6 lamb shanks 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, chopped 3 carrots, cut to round slices 10 minced garlic cloves 750mL red wine

400g tin of diced tomatoes 400ml low-salt chicken broth 400ml beef broth 5 tsp chopped fresh rosemary 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme 2 tsp grated lemon peel

ME THOD 1. Coat shanks with salt and pepper and heat oil in a large pot. Cook at a medium-high heat. Add shanks, a few at a time to the pot and cook until brown on all sides, about 8 minutes, then place the shanks in a bowl.

2. Add onions, carrots and garlic to the pot and sautĂŠ until golden, about 10 minutes. Then, stir in all remaining ingredients and add the shanks back into the pot, ensuring they are submerged. Bring to the boil and then reduce heat to medium-low.

3. Cover and simmer until meat is tender, this should take about 2 hours.

4. Remove the lid after the two hours and simmer until the meat is very tender, about 30 minutes longer.

Transfer shanks to platter and cover with cooking foil.

5. Boil juices in pot until thickened, season with salt and pepper and spoon over shanks to serve.

What are you currently working on? About a million and one things! My ongoing projects include the Green Team, which is an environmental and wildlife action group led by students in my school. There’s also council, various community groups and my ambassadorship with EarthTech, which works tirelessly to help the youth develop solutions to world issues..

How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast? My family moved here mid-way through 2009.

Your family includes… My family is hardly a conventional one, we’re a bit blended. My nearest and dearest are my mum Thandi and my sister Kenya. They are my rocks. I have to shout out D-Ray as well. I firmly believe you choose your family, and the friends I surround myself with are my family.

Do you have a nickname? Among a group of friends, I’ve been unceremoniously dubbed ‘nature boy’. When I first met them, I was very young and in the height of my tomboy phase.

First car? My first car is the one I am learning to drive in. It’s an adorable beige Toyota RAV4 I’ve named Old Jack because of the letters on the number plate. It even has a two-way!

Ella Woodborne, 16, is a South African-born environmental advocate, poet, writer and the Sunshine Coast’s Young Citizen of the Year for 2020. As well as her regular school studies, she is studying creative writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast and is working on getting her novel published. A self-confessed chronic bookworm, Ella loves to learn as much as she possibly can about the world.

Why do you live here? We chose to come to the Sunshine Coast for many reasons – it’s far safer than South Africa, it’s a beautiful environment, there are good schools and great health care.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Without a doubt it’s my farm.

Best day in your life? The day my sister was born.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Why was it a turning point? I’ve struggled with ill-health my entire life. I had a particularly bad bout of illness in 2017. I was at rock bottom and hadn’t eaten in three days. My dad was telling me that if I didn’t eat, my organs would start failing. The easy option would have been to rely on my feeding tube as eating was too painful. But I managed to eat a single beef rissole. It began the process of learning to eat again.

Favourite book? As a bookworm, this is a hard question to answer. If I had to, I could give you my top three. The first would be The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Next would be The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh.

What are you reading now? It’s a mission of mine to read the classics of the western literary canon. As I ticked off my list, I came to Wuthering Heights. I’ve been gently going through it.

What achievement are you most proud of? I’d probably say it’s getting the Sunshine Coast Youth Citizen of the Year – it was a defining moment.

You are happiest when? I’m with my family or creating, whether it be writing, drawing, painting, sewing or cooking.

Favourite song? I couldn’t possibly tell you a single one.

Among the top is Ends of the Earth by Lord Huron, Arrival of the Birds by the Cinematic Orchestra and Like Gold by Vance Joy.

What frustrates you the most? I’m most frustrated by ignorance. We know so much about the environment and the issues affecting it, but people still turn a blind eye. I acknowledge people are entitled to their own opinions, but it frustrates me when there is proven fact in front of them and they opt to ignore it.

If you feel it’s time to implement a digital detox in your home, you’re probably right. My Weekly Preview spoke to a range of experts to find out why. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

P

hones, iPads, computers, email, cloud programs, smart TVs, games and on it goes.

Adults and children alike are connected to some form of device and online tool every day for work, school or simply to stay connected.

These devices, plus millions of online tools and applications (apps), are designed to make our lives easier, more efficient and more inclusive. But do they really? And is there a point when technology becomes too consuming and a digital detox is desperately needed? We’ve done some digging and asked around, and the results may surprise you.

Sunshine Coast clinical psychologist and author Dr Rebecca Ray says when it comes to tech time, it’s important to be realistic.

“Some screen time is inevitable, and even useful in today’s age. But too much is when it impacts on your wellbeing and relationships. Look for signs of reduced concentration and productivity, or if you’re distracted when you’re spending time with those close to you as markers that a digital detox could be useful for bringing you back to centre.”

Dr Erica Mealy is a lecturer in computer science at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and she says it’s all about self-awareness and moderation.

“Many good things can be very bad for us if used excessively,” she says. “Too much technology can lead us to

de-skilling and an over-reliance on technology. The real driver for me is asking if the technology is helpful.

“Often, we make tech the only choice when design activities or brainstorming might actually be better accomplished on a white board or Post-its. It’s a matter of taking a step back to reflect and see if the technology is really necessary and if it’s helping,” Dr Mealy says.

“It comes down to evaluating what your life needs and if you find yourself being overly attached to your device, taking the steps to disconnect more. It’s a hard thing to do alone, and sometimes it’s a loved one or colleague that might bring it to your attention.”

Dr Karen Sutherland is the program co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Communication (Social Media) at the University of the Sunshine Coast and she also recognises devices play a large and crucial role in many people’s work. But she advises when socialising or at home with the family, be present in the moment.

“Put your phone in your bag or on the table and avoid being actively on it all the time when in the company of others.”

As well as providing benefits in a work setting, some social media apps like Facebook can be useful.

Buderim parents, Kate and Aaron Davies and their two boys, Hayden, eight, and Mason, six, positively use some apps to stay in touch. “Aaron has worked away since before our children were born,” Mrs Davies says. “We use Snapchat and

Facebook video messenger to talk/see him on his weeks away. They boys love being able to see him as well as talk to him.

“There’s little games they can play together and funny filters they use so they always have a lot of fun showing daddy

their funny faces.”

But often, use isn’t always so innocent and fun, as people become consumed.

When asked if people are comparing their lives to others and their achievements, Dr Ray says, “Not potentially, definitely.

“Social media can be a very

destructive force for a person’s sense of self-worth when they fall into the trap of comparing themselves negatively, or reducing their socialising to only the virtual world, thus missing out on the neural benefits of face-to-face connection away from screens.”

Dr Rachel Wheeler and her colleague Dr Tracey Hunter of The Wellbeing Codes agree. “One of the problems with social media is that it prohibits us from activating our inner dialogue of self-praise and self-validation,” Dr Wheeler says.

“We become dependent and sometimes addicted to the external validation that we are unable to give ourselves, by relying on comments and likes about our posts as validation that we are okay, popular, acceptable, beautiful and desirable.

“This is very short-lived and risky because your whole sense of self-worth becomes dependent on validation from others. Which is why you have to post again and again to get more likes and compliments.

“It literally is addictive because of the dopamine rush your brain gets in its reward centre from the likes and comments. Facebook would have been an epic fail if there was no ‘like’ button, because there would be no dopamine reward cycle for the brain.”

Online platforms also enable a space where people practise behaviours otherwise not acceptable. “There’s the child or adult who is polite when myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY face-to-face, but participates in hurtful or bullying comments in an online forum,” Dr Mealy says.

“So-called ‘keyboard warriors’ can feel empowered to vent their frustrations in ways that they would not consider appropriate in person, which can be intensely hurtful and harmful to the receiver of the message. Which they do often because there’s not necessarily instant or proportional feedback.”

So, what are some of the other red flags we need to be aware of when digital use is too high or risky? Dr Ray says these can include reduced attention and concentration, low mood and anxiety, especially negative comparison with others. “Attaching self-worth to positive or negative experiences online, an inability to stay present in relationships, a sense of addiction to the screen, anxiety and FOMO when unable to the access the phone, for

example, are all red flags,” she adds.

For Mrs Davies and her husband, she says they use social media but are mindful of ensuring a good balance between screen time and getting out and about.

“Myself and Aaron use social media,” she says. “The kids are too young for these platforms yet. I do take note of the tracker on my phone of how much time I spend on Facebook and Instagram etc, and try to make a conscious effort to not spend too much time on these platforms.

“They are a great way to stay in touch with family and friends, and a great way to make new friends as well. [But] I can see why people take breaks from social media

as it can be very addictive.”

USC associate professor of child development and learning Dr Michael Nagel says time off screens is better than time on. “There are also a worrying and growing number of studies suggesting that social media is a major contributing factor to a vast array of mental health issues in young people, ranging from anxiety and depression to bullying and other problems.”

He says parents need to be a part of any discussion around social media and help establish healthy boundaries and monitor usage.

When it comes to the younger

generation on social media, Dr Sutherland says parents should monitor the usage and content their children are consuming.

“Parents should be in the same room as kids when they’re using devices with social media apps. Whether it is Instagram, Snapchat or TikTok, it is important to have control over what children are consuming.”

With the many apps available now, Dr Nagel is also concerned about the number of alarming issues surrounding apps that are labelled as educational.

“Anyone can build an app and call it educational or a learning tool.

“Researchers I personally know looked at 80,000 apps that were badged as being ‘learning’ or ‘educational’ tools, and concluded that almost all were nothing more than ‘digital’ candy. Meaning, they gave kids a rush but never really amounted to more than that.

“To date, very few apps are constructed with an understanding of the ‘learning’ sciences and are nothing more than a bit of entertainment at best.

“It’s also important to know that the design of apps and games are informed

THE SPLIT THAT NEVER CAME ‘Move on for seaside city’ was the headline in March 1994, but it would be more than a decade before a Sunshine Coast council region became an official reality. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

T

he 1994 city proposal, citing a “need to split from hinterland” was not quite the Sunshine Coast Regional Council that eventually came about in 2008 through the amalgamation of the Maroochy, Caloundra and Noosa shires.

There would be no coastal city with a separate hinterland shire, a proposal that often came with the suggestion of a boundary following the alignment of the Bruce Highway.

The idea had been cropping up for a decade as a way to wipe out the parochialism of three local government bodies and to present a united Sunshine Coast approach.

The late businessman Des Scanlan, had first floated the idea of a coastal city in 1980, and he remained convinced it was inevitable and getting closer.

In 1994, town planner, the late Jim Birrell, said electors could be voting for a Sunshine Coast City Council by the 1997 local government elections and suggested the 1995 state election could be the way to get it.

He said the scenario was simple

The view from Dulong because the Sunshine Coast had the most vulnerable seats in southeast Queensland and it was a great political opportunity to make the people “a gift” of the coast city and then pick up the

swinging and marginal votes. “The best way for Mr Goss to fix that is to give the coastal people their city and then make possibly two rural shires centred on Maleny and Nambour,” he said.

“It would be a huge benefit to the Labor Party as it would be the first time someone had done something constructive for all the people on the coast.”

At that time, with one vote one value, the hinterland could still easily out-vote the coastal population in Maroochy, the largest of the three shires.

“It is now becoming apparent how much the hinterland has taken from the coast and it’s time we stopped worrying about the sugar industry which affects 66 families owning farms and look after the rest of the population of almost a quarter of a million,” Birrell argued.

But apart from a brief flirtation with Labor as a protest against the introduction of road tolls in 1989, Sunshine Coast voters remained loyally conservative and the promise of a coast city wasn’t about to change their mind.

The State Government, under premier Wayne Goss, had established a project team called SEQ 2001 in 1991, to prepare a growth strategy for southeast

neighbouring shires it doesn’t matter where the boundaries are and a case could easily be made against the coast city on this basis,” he said.

The Local Government Commissioner weighed in that formation of a coast city could be triggered only by a State Government referral for him to undertake a review, and that Cabinet would be likely to act only if there was sufficient community pressure and councils wanted to go ahead. But it would still be a long time coming and there would never be a coastal city that cut the hinterland adrift.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council was created by the State Government in 2008, although Noosa split from the group on January 1, 2014, and reverted to taking care of its own business.

Bob Abbott, who had been mayor of Noosa since 1997, became the first Sunshine Coast mayor despite having led a 10,000-strong protest march against the merger of the three shires the previous year.

With the motto ‘Big Bob for the Big Job’, he won by a landslide to launch the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council into the future in March 2008.

And now, beware the Ides of March, as promises flow to elect the next regional council on Saturday, March 28.

Former Brisbane Broncos legend Jack Reed is back this year to support local children to build confidence and learn respect. Last year, he visited around 10,000 children with the Surf Club Mooloolaba and Brisbane Broncos Community Program, which he’s hoping to take to a school every week for 2020. He says he’ll be raising awareness of issues including bullying, alcohol use and social media use.“We conduct seminars at local high schools on a variety of issues including drug and alcohol awareness, relationships and personal branding, cyber safety and social media,” Mr Reed says. “In primary schools, we teach the younger kids on topics that encourage smarter choices around health, as well as personal and career inspirations and goals. We get the kids to think about what kind of person they want to be when they grow up.” Schools interested in participating in the program can register their interest by emailing Jack.Reed@broncos.com.au.

To celebrate the Sunshine Coast’s many green spaces, people have been rolling up their sleeves and planting native trees at a number of events around the Coast during Parks Week 2020. Trees provide environmental, social and economic benefits, such as insulating carbon, producing oxygen, filtering pollutants, providing shade and cooling local surrounds. Each tree planted will help provide habitat for our local wildlife and create more shade for park users.

MOOLOOLABA TO HOST INAUGURAL SUP COMP

The Sunshine Coast SUP Club has announced that the inaugural Mooloolaba SUP Fest will be hitting the Coast from July 23 to 26.

Stand-up paddle boarding professionals and event managers noticed there was a significant hole in the market for SUP events on the east coast of Australia.

Thus, a SUP Fest was created to offer an opportunity for competitors and visitors to show off their stand-up paddle board skills and compete on the Sunshine Coast.

The SUP Fest will include a range of categories, including surfing, a downwind event, TechX, a FOILing showcase, Flatwater Brain v Braun Challenge, an overall Paddle Master winner and even a world record attempt.

An event organiser spokesperson says, “We will be providing more information about the world record attempt for the most stand-up paddle boarders in one area shortly. Needless to say, we are going to need a lot of help from a lot of people! So please watch this space.”

The SUP Fest hub will be in and around The Spit at Mooloolaba. It’s the ideal location because of nearby access to flatwater canals, open ocean for downwind events and quality surf. In addition to the ocean setting, the spokesperson says Mooloolaba was chosen because of its vibrant tourist industry and is well provisioned with great accommodation options and excellent cafes and restaurants.

The Sunshine Coast SUP Club is a local group with an enthusiastic and experienced management team.

“To ensure the SUP Fest is professionally managed, we have appointed World Surfaris as our event organiser,” says the spokesperson.

You can say it’s hormones, but no one knows what the heck we mean.

“We’ll dive deep into the brain, what’s going on neurologically that’s driving disengagement, what’s driving aberrant behaviours. Why this brain development is necessary in order for teens to become adults. You know your kid, you know how to raise them.

“What I can do is give them the mechanisms, so you can see a process

going on that is necessary for us to get to adulthood.

“Once you know what that is, you won’t think so oddly about your teenagers. I try and do something interactive every 15 to 20 minutes.

“Most of the games are visual or auditory and it will illustrate what part of the brain is controlling what. Ideally, people leave not having had to take my word for anything but having experienced it themselves.”

Dr Horvath is looking forward to returning to the Coast to share more of his brain science with our community.

“I got to work with Flinders and Mountain Creek students a couple of months back and we had such a good time and it was so well received, we said, ‘let’s make it bigger and see if we can get the community involved’.

“If we can get the teachers, students and parents all speaking the same language in learning, we’ll be on the same page.”

Time for a fresh start After 20 years in council, Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer says it’s time to prioritise family. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

fter 20 years as a Sunshine Coast councillor and two terms as deputy mayor, Tim Dwyer has decided not to recontest the next election. The division two councillor has kicked a lot of goals for Caloundra over the past two decades and it’s time to prioritise family and reassess his future career.

A Caloundra boy through and through, his career in rugby league took him around Australia and overseas, but he has always called Caloundra home and enjoyed serving his community.

“I got into local government because I thought I had something to offer and I wanted to make Caloundra the best it could be,” he says. “But I’ve decided not to recontest the next election for a variety of reasons. The main one is making sure I’ve got the right balance in my life with regards to my wife and kids and having family time.

I felt after 20 years in this job, you make a lot of sacrifices and spend a lot of time

investing in the community, which is all part of the job. But now it’s time for me to look at finding employment that is better for me and my two young kids, who are going on 12 and eight. I want to make sure I’ve got enough quality time with them.”

Cr Dwyer says he has worked through every holiday he’s had with his family during his time as a councillor and he’s looking forward to some solid beach time without having countless emails and phone calls to attend to.

But there’s another reason he’s hanging up his councillor’s hat, and it’s a dark reality for anyone working in the public eye today.

“With community attitudes and social media, the level of decency has fallen away and people are less civil. There have been a lot of changes in local government and to get the enjoyment out of it I used to get is a lot harder now. The way small sections of the community conduct themselves affects my peace of mind. I’m at home physically

“It’s a shame people seem to think it’s okay to treat elected representatives in such an uncivil and impolite manner. They say things like ‘you f***ing money hungry pricks’, ‘you’re corrupt’, ‘you’re a killer’ – absolutely ridiculous, unproven, unvalidated things that not only affects the representative, but their families. People forget the impact it has on wives, children,

brothers, sisters and good friends. In this job, you have to be tolerant of a wide variety of views, but I don’t think any councillor should have to put up with the ridiculous nature of the commentary.

“It’s human nature and I respect their right to free speech, but it would be nice if that speech came with some humility and decency. Some people seem to think we’ve got a target on us if we are elected representatives. It certainly doesn’t help with mental health and I can imagine what it would be like for someone who might be

helped usher in the Sunshine Coast Technical Trade Training Centre based at Caloundra High School, the Caloundra Central Park Sport and Recreation Precinct and a public art strategy for division two.

Cr Dwyer is happy with how the Sunshine Coast is developing and believes the majority of residents would agree.

“I think we’re on a pretty good trajectory at the moment,” he says. “It’s the State Government who sets the South East

Regional Plan and the population figures that go with that, but we’re always behind on infrastructure on the Coast. We’ve been treated with complacency by the LNP because we’re a safe seat. From the Labor perspective, they have a defeatist attitude – they can’t win on the Coast, so they don’t support us either. We’re in catch-up mode on the Sunshine Coast – we definitely need a better mass transit system.”

His passion for the Sunshine Coast is still very apparent, so Cr Dwyer’s departure from the council and the opportunities it afforded him to implement change is bittersweet.

“I’m sad to be leaving,” he says. “There are a lot of things about local government that I love. I’ve always been immensely satisfied and fulfilled by this job. You can’t always get a win for everybody, but I always tried to see how I could look at things to make Caloundra a better place. I don’t have any regrets, but I do have a lot of learnings.

“I’ll have some clear air after the election. I don’t have to worry about anything else than what my future is about. I’ll gather my thoughts and see what opportunities are out there for me.

“What the future holds, I don’t know.

I’m looking for the door of opportunity rather than looking back over my shoulder. It’s an exciting time.”

A BRAVE WORK EMAIL

TOILET PAPER WARS

Sami Muirhead is impressed by a colleague’s approach to letting her co-workers know she has been diagnosed with cancer.

Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane was one of the people caught without toilet paper and almost had to resort to collecting leaves.

I

work with an awesome lady named Rene who is a trailblazer. The mum of two sent an email to our entire radio station staff telling us she has cancer.

Rene is only 43 and has a big fight ahead of her. But I was so blown away by her honesty. With Rene’s permission this is, in part, her remarkable email.

“You may have noticed I wasn’t there this last week and maybe wasn’t myself the week before. I just wanted to let you know that Monday just gone I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. We are still trying to get our heads around it and been trying to tell all the people in our inner bubble before I let you all know what was happening with me.

“I went for my first ever mammogram because I am ‘of that age’ that I should be getting checked (over 40) then this turned into something presenting as abnormal in my right breast that needed to be further looked at with more mammograms, ultrasounds, being poked and prodded and finally a biopsy.

“It’s a little bit scary that I have got this little thing growing inside my body and there were no signs presenting to me that it was happening. It’s really important that if you or any of your wives, partners, sisters or friends are ‘of the age’, please urge them to go get their routine mammogram because if I had left it this may have been a different kind of email. We’re waiting to

hear from the hospital, which will be followed by surgery to remove my lump.

Then hopefully after the surgery and because I caught it early and it’s only 1.6 centimetres, I will be rid of the nasty little sucker and we can move on with our lives.

I’m gonna fight my hardest to rid my body of it and try to stay positive throughout and just keep being me and doing what I do!

There will no doubt be times when I need a hug or a cry, but other times when I will just be me doing my job and getting on with it. Thanks for listening and being a great bunch to work with… I cannot wait to be back at work tomorrow with you all.”

There it was. All the facts outlined very calmly. Rene’s very private battle made very public. What a genius move. It took away whispering in the hallways. It prevented awkward chats in the kitchen not really knowing what to say or not to say. With that one email we all knew exactly what was going on.

Sometimes I think we forget about humanity and compassion in our workplaces because we are taught to be politically correct. We are taught you can be sued for most things. Not on Rene’s watch.

The keen runner told me she wanted to be so open to us all because we often spend more time with our work friends than we do our family. Rene is going to beat this damn thing because she does things her own way. Mammograms are free. You can book one at breastscreen.qld.gov.au.

was having a right laugh at the memes springing up across my social media feeds having a dig at the people who are panic-buying toilet paper like there’s no tomorrow.

It has made absolutely no sense to me.

Hand sanitiser, masks and tissues – I can see why these might be helpful items to have on hand. After all, they are staples for any cold or flu infection. But toilet paper?

It was all fun and games until we were down to our last roll. In a household of four with one little person who doesn’t realise she only needs a modest couple of squares to wipe her small tush. One roll isn’t going to last more than a couple of days.

I’d seen the hysteria online, but to see the completely bare shelves in the supermarket rammed home just how real our potential situation could be.

In their rush to make sure they had enough toilet paper to last for 12 months, panic buyers have left the people who need toilet paper just to get through the next week out in the wilderness.

Ah, wilderness! I began to think which leaves in the backyard would be suitable substitutes. Lillypilly and gum were the top contenders and perhaps the tiger grass at a pinch. The clock was ticking to when I had to pick the kids up from school, so there was no time to drive around to other stores.

Just when I was about to resign myself to the fact I would spend my afternoon collecting leaves, an angel appeared, his

trolley a shining light gleaming with relief – toilet paper! He barely made it to the shelves before a line formed and he was passing out toilet paper to eager shoppers.

I had a brief chat with the angelic bringer of the toilet paper: “People think the supply will be cut off because of exports from China are being impacted,” he said flatly.

The makers of Kleenex, Sorbent, Quilton and Woolworths toilet paper all have manufacturing plants in Australia.

“I had a brief chat with the angelic bringer of the toilet paper” A statement issued by Woolworths says Kleenex are now manufacturing 24 hours, seven days a week, as are Sorbent. The makers of Quilton have tripled their normal production.

Buying limits are now being applied for toilet paper and rice. Please stop the panic-buying of toilet paper. If you buy what you need, there will be plenty to go around. I have a large property and can harvest leaves if needed, but spare a thought for the people who live in apartment complexes with little to no available foliage. We will get through this.

3. Plant bulbs Who doesn’t love a splash of colour?

2. Fertilise The cooler months are a great time to get lawn health under control. After the dry heat of summer, your grass is certainly in need of some love. The right fertiliser will encourage new root growth.

Tip: Chose a lower nitrogen content fertiliser for autumn months as it helps repair damage.

4. Start your own compost A natural fertiliser that’s great for your garden, compost is also great for the environment. And, it’s easy to make! Balance a mixture of fallen leaves, kitchen scraps, grass cuttings, old wet newspapers and coffee grounds. Your garden will thank you.

ENJOY BIG FLAVOURS AT BIG SKIES Slow-cooked prime smoked Wagyu beef from Jimbour Station will set the foodie scene for Big Skies Festival 2020 as producers start preparing for more than 3000 visitors to the Western Downs from April 29 to May 3.

The region has rejoiced in recent rain, which has turned the dusty country into a green oasis just in time for the crowds.

Russell Pastoral Company (RPC) owns Jimbour Station, and its general manager Adam Armstrong says while the rain is a welcome relief, it will take months if not years for the farmers to return to normality, but Big Skies offers the opportunity to let people know they are open for business.

“What people often don’t know is that we had to offload large numbers of our breeding stock to survive and in some cases it will take at least five years to return to normal,” Mr Armstrong says. “This is why we are still so grateful for the thousands of visitors who will come and spend money in our region when we’re doing it tough.

“Visitors will get a taste of some amazing produce and we will be putting on quite the feed with top quality Wagyu beef ready for the crowds at the Chef’s

Table exclusive culinary event, as well at the Camp Kitchen Experience.

“We want people to walk away from their Big Skies Festival experience craving more and coming back year on year – we have no doubt they will be impressed.”

RPC is teaming up with Smo-KING Barbeque for the new and improved Camp Kitchen Experience, using the finest lamb and Wagyu beef.

Smo-KING Barbeque owner Darren Keyte says,“It’s exciting to work with Adam and the team – this will be one of our biggest jobs. We have planned this so visitors can experience a quality meal with some of region’s finest produce.”

The Camp Kitchen Experience costs $29 per person, per night on Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1 as well as breakfast on the Friday to Sunday.

EUMUNDI SCHOOL OF ROCK TO LAUNCH AUDITIONS THIS WEEKEND The Imperial Hotel is holding auditions this weekend for The Eumundi School of Rock, which is on the lookout for its newest Imperial Super Band.

Now in its fifth year, 2020 is expected to be the biggest turn-out yet. Eumundi School of Rock (ESOR) founder and

musician Katie Noonan says she is excited to create a very special brand-new teenage super band.

“We are absolutely thrilled that in our fifth year of Eumundi School of Rock, the wonderful crew at The Imperial Hotel are coming on board to sponsor a brand new teenager super band,” Ms Noonan says.

“The Imperial Super Band will be open for ages 13 to 17 to audition and will include three free one-on-one lessons with our ESOR professional teachers, plus 10 weeks’ professional mentoring with ARIA award-winning and national jazz award-winning local musician/ composer Zac Hurren; and awesome professional gig opportunities.”

“We will still be continuing our 20 free scholarships for kids in Years 3 to 8, but this initiative gives us an exciting new opportunity to showcase our extratalented older kids.”

The Imperial Hotel Eumundi manager Paul Thomas says the team is delighted to help the ESOR with a sponsorship that includes financial support to cover tuition and teaching for the teenagers, a lesson/rehearsal space and provision of backline equipment.

“Music is a big part of what we do at The Imperial, and nurturing the next generation of musos will be a privilege,” Mr Thomas says.

The littlies aren’t forgotten – Mr Thomas says the Eumundi School of Rock auditions for kids will be held in the last week of May at the Eumundi State School, ahead of a three-month free scholarship program.

“Both of these awesome initiatives culminate in our big end-of-year concert at the Eumundi School of Arts on August 29, as part of the opening weekend of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Horizon Festival.

“Music is integral to the human experience, but for young people I believe it is particularly important for their confidence, self-belief, sense of community and their mental health.”

Auditions are on March 16 and 18 from 3.30 pm at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi. The audition song is Power and the Passion by Midnight Oil plus a song of the participant’s choice.

MAKING THE MOST OF LOW INTEREST RATES If you’re in the market for your first home, now is the time to take the plunge. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

L

ast week’s RBA rate cut remains a hot topic and for people on the hunt for a new loan, or to re-mortgage, how do you know which lending agent is right for you and who’ll actually give you the best deal?

Colin Mason, director of SMS Finance, Maroochydore says the flow-on effects of last Tuesday’s announcement by the RBA resulting in the lowest interest rates for over 50 years are twofold.

“The interest rate cuts and the subsequent passing on of the full rate cut (by most banks), in such a short period of time, has definitely sparked more interest from home borrowers.

“Not only are borrowers’ loan repayments significantly lower than previously, but the banks’ assessment rates mean they may qualify to borrow more than they could before. It’s probably too early to tell what impact that will have on local housing prices and the Sunshine Coast economy, but the signs are promising,” Mr Mason says.

Trevor Ryan, mortgage broker at Aussie Home Loans Coolum, predicts rates will remain low for the next six months, further benefiting borrowers.

“Importantly, many lenders will continue to offer a range of incentives for new customers, so first-home buyers could be in a good position to find a very competitive home loan deal.”

Mr Ryan says if you are in the market for a home loan, there are generally three ways to go about it. “You can apply with your bank directly, shop around for a deal yourself, or get a broker to do it all for you.

“Many customers chose to go with a broker because not only do they have access to more than one lender, they often

communicate with third parties to provide further evidence they may need to assess your application, liaise with valuers, your solicitor, your builder (for construction), and even real estate agents (if you’re buying an investment property or buying at auction) to ensure a smooth application process,” he explains.

Nicholas Barker, Bank of Queensland owner-manager at Maroochydore says many of his customers opt for a bank because they’re after a finance partner that’s more than just a transaction.

“I’ve been in finance now over 15 years and the overarching themes have been trust and relationships. With a team of 14, we find that our clients can relate to someone in our team.”

Regardless of the lending type, our experts agree there are ways borrowers can increase the likelihood of getting a loan.

Mr Ryan says, “I encourage customers to remove unnecessary financial commitments; have a strong savings history, and maintain stable income.

“Have a clear picture of what you want, so you can have a meaningful discussion with a lender. And choose which lender to talk to, or use a broker, as lender’s credit policies can vary significantly; and whilst you may not qualify with one lender, another lender may happily approve your loan request.”

And when it comes to the next 12 months to two years, Mr Barker concludes: “The old saying about interest rate prediction needs a crystal ball remains the same. Regardless of the interest rate, ask yourself every six months whether your home loan goal is on track. Have a plan and review it regularly.”

We’ve had some decent swell around, so I hope you have all managed to get out and grab a wave.

You could probably expect more of the same with the low pressure system moving down the coast bringing rain, but hopefully keeping the surf up. No secrets here… get in early to beat the wind. The protected headlands out of the SE winds will be the pick of the spots. All in all, I just love this time of the year. The weather has cooled, the swell is here, it’s a great time to enjoy our beaches.

Remember to always leave them cleaner than you found them.
