id you know that women earn 23 per cent less than men globally? Or that one in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence? We might be advancing, but not one country in this world is yet to achieve gender equality. The United Nations has a clear target – to achieve gender equality by 2030, and this year’s International Women’s Day is a clear reminder of the urgency.

This year’s theme, I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights, reflects on the world’s feminist gains.

It has been more than 100 years since the world first celebrated what is now known as International Women’s Day. March 8 is a day of recognition of women’s achievements and a way to promote equality. In some countries, IWD is a day of protest – to stand up and be heard on issues that we continue to battle against.

Here in Australia, the equality movement is gathering strength. Changes can be seen in the education curriculum, in the increasing number of female CEO’s and across all industries including STEMM. To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, this week we speak with some of the women who are leading the way for a future generation of scientists, doctors and engineers. Here’s to making a difference.

Paving the way To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, My Weekly Preview talks to women working in STEMM – the pioneers who are leading the way for the nation’s future doctors, scientists and engineers.

• Women in STEMM Australia is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014, which has grown into a nationally recognised association for women in STEMM.

hen Year 12 student Jocelyn Lindsay heard trailblazing Australian scientist Professor Tanya Monro speak at the National Youth Science Forum 2020 Science Dinner in Brisbane in January, it was a watershed moment. Prof Monro is a pioneering physicist and Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, the first woman to hold this position. For Jocelyn, her aspirations to pursue a career in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) suddenly became achievable.

“It was so inspirational to see a woman in science who has actually succeeded and made a difference in society,” says Jocelyn.

“I think it’s really hard for women in any career to get to the top, but science is particularly male dominated.

“Tanya Monro worked so hard and had to sacrifice many things, but it’s people like her who actually pave the way for the future.

“I think people are going to be a lot more supportive of women in STEMM, because they know how important it is to not only build diversity, but people have come to realise women are really important in creativity and the generation of useful, innovative ideas.”

The Immanuel Lutheran College student was selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum Year 12 program in Canberra. It’s a prestigious honour that includes a rigorous selection process.

Unfortunately it was cancelled due to the bushfires, but it was an acknowledgement that she’s on the right path.

Jocelyn plans to study medicine when she finishes school, following in the footsteps of her sister Olivia, who is studying a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at James Cook University. Last year, Jocelyn was the University of Queensland’s Science Ambassador for her school, which further cemented her love for STEMM. “I was able to lead the science club for the junior school, which was really good,” she says. “I was able to inspire the younger kids to pursue their science aspirations.

going to see more diversity and equality in these traditionally male-dominated fields.

Great strides have been made over the past five years, but we still have a long way to go.

you could see they were a bit nervous. But I think seeing an older female doing science gave them hope.

“It was exciting to be an inspiration to a younger generation, just like I’ve been inspired. Seeing Tanya Monro was a huge inspiration for me. I realised it is possible for a woman to get where she wants without sacrificing family life and children. It was good for me to be able to pass that on.”

Strong role models for women and girls in STEMM are vitally important if we are

engineering. Long-standing gender biases steer women away from STEMM, but programs such as the SAGE (Science in Australia Gender Equity) framework are now in place to promote and support initiatives aimed at encouraging women, trans and gender-diverse people to participate in STEMM and to address systemic barriers to equity.

FEATURE STORY internationally renowned scientist who conducts research in gene therapy and neurodegenerative diseases, she is the co-founder of Women in STEMM Australia and is the executive director of the Industry Mentoring Network in STEM at the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

“We now have this fantastic SAGE framework, which is an incredibly symbolic and powerful message to send to woman across the entire STEMM sector,” says Dr Evans-Galea. “It says STEMM is for anyone.

It says STEMM is for everyone. It’s valued, you’re valued, your contributions are valued and respected. That alone is a huge shift. It’s just fantastic progress. I think over the last five to six years we’ve made huge strides. We have moved from zero conversations happening to action.”

Ms Evans-Galea became interested in science while studying music at university and went on to obtain a PhD in molecular biology from the University of New South Wales.

Last year, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of her service to women in STEMM. “A lot of today’s students don’t see it, because the student cohort is so diverse and gender balanced,” she says. “The higher up you go, it really confronts you. That’s exactly what happened to me. As I moved higher up in my career, there were fewer and fewer women, more men, more white Caucasian men. The diversity would disappear.

“I’ve been labelled as aggressive and bossy. I think when a woman expresses her ideas and her values in a really assertive way, even though it’s respectful, she’ll be labelled as bossy. I did face that expectation – that women will be quiet and mild and meek and when you’re not, you’re not fitting the stereotype.

“I think it’s worse in STEMM, just because of the hyper-competitive nature of science. People are pitched against people on a regular basis. You’re continually

comparing yourself to others at your level and the next level up.

“We still have a huge way to go. When you talk to women who are in the lab or at the bench or in the clinic or in the field, has it really changed for them? They still face everyday sexism, bias, ongoing issues that occur in academic culture.

“Women face career disruption for family and caring roles and health issues. It puts a gap in your track record, out of the lab, out of the field, so therefore your work is not actually happening.

“If your work is computer-based, you could do it from home, but most requires special resources so you actually have to be there. That affects women because women tend to be the primary carers. A lot of organisations are introducing research assistants or technical support to keep that

track record going. It’s something I wish I’d had in my career.

“We have a bit of a boys club culture in STEMM. We have to think more inclusively – how do we collaborate, how do we work together, the times we have meetings.

“These are simple things. It doesn’t have to be every single meeting, but as much as possible, we could have meetings between 9.30am and 3.30pm.”

Dr Evans-Galea says it’s important students are informed about the many career possibilities in STEMM. “You don’t have to become a researcher.

It’s not all about research. We need to break down those stereotypes. It’s not just about a person in a lab coat. There are people working in government doing policy that

heavily requires STEMM skills, for example data analysis and problem solving, critical thinking. STEMM is incredibly widely used across education.

“I think it’s really crucial students understand that as early as possible. So often careers councillors at school are going by the stereotypes – oh, science leads to research. With STEMM, you can go be an industry leader, an industry executive, you can travel the world as a business leader. It’s very rewarding. You’re changing lives and bringing hope.”

Dr Ingrid Rosenberg is an advanced physiotherapist with Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service who champions women in STEMM. She says it’s crucial women support each other.

“It’s a shared responsibility that we really empower and promote women to rise,” she says. “Sometimes what females do is feel quite threatened by other females and try to do the opposite.

“I’m on scientific committees and organising committees for conferences.

I’m right at the front to ensure when we invite keynote speakers, there should be females – it should be balanced. We should be trying to get at least 50 per cent females on panels.”

Dr Rosenberg strongly advocates for women in science. Originally from the Netherlands, she has lived in Australia since 2006 and completed her PhD in 2019. She has juggled her career as a practicing physiotherapist primarily working with stroke patients with completing her PhD and raising two sons, who are 10 and 11.

She returns to the Netherlands every year.

“I think Australia is lagging behind,” she says. “The Netherlands is a bit more progressive and liberal. In Australia, there’s quite a difference in pay and you can see overall the trends in fellowships going more to males. We really are trying to pave the way so the next generation can climb up and don’t have it as hard. When you look back, it was quite difficult for females to do anything in STEMM. It’s getting better and better, but we have to work on that and empower other females.”

USC’S NATIONAL AWARD The University of the Sunshine Coast was recently recognised nationally for its efforts to advance the careers of women, trans and gender diverse people working in STEMM. On February 20, the university received an Athena SWAN (Scientific Women’s Academic Network) Institutional Bronze Award for boosting the recruitment and progression of female postgraduate students, and its advisory committees to specifically encourage full- and part-time staff, particularly women, whose achievements made them suitable candidates for promotion.

The bronze award, an initiative of SAGE (Science in Australia Gender Equity), requires a higher education institution to have demonstrated a solid foundation for improving gender equity in STEMM. USC Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Tim Wess attended the presentation in Adelaide. “Like most Australian universities, there are more women in academic positions but more men at professional level, especially in the sciences,” he says.

“However, in 2019, three of USC’s four staff who were promoted to professor were women, and our new Head of the School of Science and Engineering is a female professor. We don’t want to only recruit women at higher levels, we want to grow our own talent with a culture that supports female staff members.”

Lifesaving boats will take to the Mooloolah River for the first The Wharf Mooloolaba Super Sprint on Saturday March 21, endorsed

by Australian Surf Rowers League Queensland (ASRLQ). The Super Sprint races will see teams from all over the country competing on a straight course over 300 metres finishing in front of The Wharf Mooloolaba’s commercial jetty. The Wharf Mooloolaba co-owner Dirk Long says the races will be great for spectators, who can watch up to 40 male and 30 female crews competing from 8.30am to 12.30pm. MORCOMBES CELEBRATE PROGRESS OF HOME FOR KIDS

The State Government is investing more than $650,000 in specialised imaging equipment known as an MRI Simulator. “This new equipment will mean cancer patients will no longer have to sit in the MRI for up to 40 minutes,” Health Minister Steven Miles says.

“In fact, they can get that down to just 10 minutes.” The funding has allowed an existing MRI scanner at Sunshine Coast University Hospital to be upgraded so it can accurately simulate the radiotherapy treatment environment. This includes new MRI-safe positioning equipment and a hand-held 3D surface scanner. This means patients will be positioned exactly the same for their MRI scans and their radiation treatment, giving improved accuracy.

TAFE STUDENTS’ RAGS TO RICHES PROJECT

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s Build it for the Kids home at Harmony, Palmview has marked its halfway point and lockup phase. Bruce and Denise Morcombe were joined by Murphy Homes director Brooke Bastien and AVID development manager Anthony Demiris to celebrate the occasion at Hulme Street and Parkway Terrace, Crosby Way, Palmview. The house will be auctioned in October this year to help support the foundation in delivering its child safety education and counselling services to the Sunshine Coast community. CREATING A SAFE SPACE A Peregian mother couldn’t find the social support she wanted for her child with autism, so she opened a meeting place where Sunshine Coast children and their parents can relax and hang out together. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

hen Peregian mother Claire Gilmour’s son Cooper was diagnosed with autism in 2012, she realised there was a lack of support on the Sunshine Coast for families of children with autism, especially when it came to socialising. Since then, it has been her dream to create a beautiful, inclusive space where children of all ages can gather to play games and socialise in a nurturing, peaceful environment.

Eight weeks ago she finally realised her dream and opened Social Studio, located at The Sports Hub at Bokarina. It is a peaceful space where children from the ages of two to 19 who are living with ADHD, autism or social isolation can socialise in an environment that won’t be triggering or upsetting.

Ms Gilmour is the founder of the Autism Treehouse, which merged with STEPS in 2017, and The Social Studio was the next logical step to take.

“When I was with Treehouse, I realised there was such a huge need for social interaction for our kids,” she says.

“Our kids go through so much therapy and so many appointments. They watch their brothers and sisters go to sports and birthday parties. Our kids get a bit left out of that. Having the opportunity to create a space like this, which is beautiful, welcoming and calm,

it will reduce that social isolation.

“When kids reach their teens, they can get very socially isolated, they can stay stuck in their rooms on their technology.

If we can help these families and help teens connect with the community, it’s a win for us.”

Everything about the Social Studio is designed to be soothing to the senses, with a green wall that reduces noise, lights on dimmers and soft colour palettes and furnishings.

“We have kids that don’t want to leave,” says Ms Gilmour. “We keep hearing positive feedback from families. We had our first parent night the other night, with parents having wine and cheese while the kids watched a movie.

“A few families have moved up here from Melbourne and said there’s nothing like this, even in the big cities. There’s play gyms and therapy centres, but nothing socially. Nothing that helps kids build and make friends.”

The socialising happens around organised groups, including LEGO building sessions and virtual reality

experiences. There are also social sessions where kids can just come and hang out with other kids and play board games, do some art or just chat and connect.

“During the day we’re opening it up for support workers to bring in their clients, just to give them something else to do,” says Ms Gilmour. “Or they can just sit in our sensory pod swings. Our social sessions in the afternoons are very popular and are broken into age groups.”

Ms Gilmour is thrilled with the response she’s received so far and hopes Social Studio will expand to other locations on the Sunshine Coast and even further afield.

“When my son was diagnosed I thought, ‘oh my goodness, will he ever have friends, will he ever get invited to a birthday party?’. Hopefully, through the Social Studio, I can help parents with children who are newly diagnosed through that journey.”

A MILESTONE WORTH CELEBRATING For 50 years, Suncare Community Services has been supporting the Maroochydore and wider Sunshine Coast community. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

A

s long as she can remember, Suncare Community Services has been a part of June Conolly’s life, which made the launch of its 50-year commemorative coffee table book all the more special.

Ms Conolly, along with Suncare’s chief executive Russell Mason and more than 150 guests, celebrated the organisation’s 50th anniversary last week.

From humble beginnings in 1970, Suncare has evolved from a Meals on Wheels Maroochydore service to a not-for-profit organisation with more than 350 employees and 3000 customers.

This history has been captured in the celebration book, which also shares the life stories of several Suncare customers, with Ms Conolly proudly making a cameo.

“It has been an honour to have watched Suncare grow over the years to the

organisation it is today. It was an honour to be featured in the coffee table book; to share some of my key achievements and my fondest memories,” she says.

For more than 45 years, Ms Conolly generously volunteered her time, cooking, packing and delivering meals for those in need. She served as president and treasurer, and was made an honorary life member in 1994. At age 82, Ms Conolly retired from volunteering and was officially appointed as Suncare’s patron in 2012.

Mr Mason says, “It was a great privilege to have our patron June Conolly OAM attend the celebration. Her dedication and significant commitment set the foundation for how Suncare operates today, and she has touched the lives of thousands of customers and their carers.”

He says 2020 marks an important milestone for Suncare. “For 50 years,

Suncare’s staff and volunteers have strived to improve the lives of members of our local community, in particular elderly members, and I am proud to be part of this rich history.

“Suncare has grown from a small group of volunteers delivering Meals on Wheels across Maroochydore and Buderim, to offering a range of home-care services aimed at assisting people to live independently in their homes. Our services now support people from Rockhampton to the Gold Coast.”

What hasn’t changed is Suncare’s vision of “making people’s lives better”, which is the driving force of how it’s operated today.

“Serving the changing needs of the Sunshine Coast community and helping people to live independently at home are central to Suncare’s development,” Mr Mason says. “We listen to our community members and advocate for them at every level of government to ensure that their voice is heard. In particular we have focused on personalised home-care solutions that support our customers to live at home, because this is what they have told us is important to them.”

This is exactly what Suncare has done for Buderim couple Keith and Daphne McDonald, who also feature in the book.

The McDonalds operated the antique shop on the corner of Main Street and Gloucester Road in Buderim. Mr McDonald still runs the business, now online, working up to 40 hours a week.

Today, they use Suncare’s in-home assistance, which allows Mrs McDonald to receive help getting ready for the day. This enables him to continue working with his wife by his side – just as he has since 1972.

LOOKING back…

Another significant individual in Suncare’s early days was Sir Raphael West Cilento, who served as patron from 1971 to 1985. A notable Australian medical practitioner and public servant, Sir Raphael was recognised for his contribution to public service and tropical medicine with a knighthood from King George V in 1935. In 1920, Sir Raphael married Phyllis McGlew, a fellow student who became a physician. The Cilento family owned property in Caloundra and Mooloolaba for many years. In 1971, he became the first patron of the Central Sunshine Coast Committee on the Ageing, the name which preceded Suncare Community Services.

THE TRICKY RETAIL ENVIRONMENT

D

iscretionary retailing has been a tough sector to navigate. Last year’s interest rate and tax cuts appear to have had no material impact on either consumer sentiment or retail sales in most categories. Furthermore, the number of high-profile brands in administration or liquidation continues to rise, including Bardot, Colette, Jeanswest and Criniti’s in just the last few months.

In the listed environment, there have been some extremes. Weak trading updates have weighed on the share prices of Super Retail, Myer, and AP Eagers. However, there have been strong gains in names such as Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Kathmandu, Nick Scali and Temple & Webster.

The outperformers seem to have stronger links to either of the below themes:

• Housing-linked – In the six months to December, the household goods category has had a meaningful lift in sales growth. This category includes electronic goods retailing. Investors are perhaps reading this, along with improvements in other housing indicators (for example, building approvals, credit growth and house prices), as a positive for retailers of household goods like Harvey Norman, Nick Scali and JB Hi-Fi. • Online presence – Overall retail sales growth is weak, but online sales appear to have picked up again, boosted by the increased penetration of the Black Friday/ Cyber Monday promotional sales period.

In the six months to December, JB Hi-Fi Australia reported online sales growth of 18.3 per cent, with around 6.3 per cent of its sales coming from online channels (up from 5.6 per cent). Kathmandu noted its online sales grew more than 30 per cent in the half year, and it now represents approximately 10 per cent of sales. Temple & Webster is virtually wholly online.

• Cost management – Margins are generally under pressure in retail due either to wage pressures, a mix shift towards low-margin products, or a weak Australian dollar. The ability to manage costs is therefore important. JB Hi-Fi’s recent result was not particularly strong at the

sales line but it managed to improve margins through productivity initiatives, synergies from its acquisition of The Good Guys, and minimising expenditures. A stronger online presence also increases operating leverage by generating revenues at a reduced cost. For example, Temple & Webster grew sales by 44 per cent in the half-year but still reduced fixed costs from 14 per cent to 12 per cent of sales.

We remain cautious on investing in discretionary retailing: 1) Valuations are not compelling. Price-earnings multiples are elevated today compared with the more favourable consumer backdrops and stimulus packages available during the John Howard and Kevin Rudd leaderships;

2) The backdrop for retail sales growth remains challenged by weak consumer sentiment, while interest rate cuts to date have not generated a meaningful uplift; and 3) Competitive threats, such as Amazon, remain. For leverage to consumer discretionary spending, we would be more interested in companies involved in the manufacturing of gaming content and digital platforms.

From hippie kid to tech entrepreneur He didn’t have a TV growing up, but that didn’t stop Kane Sajdak from conquering the tech world. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

B

reaking his mother’s computer as a kid may have been the best thing that ever happened to Kane Sajdak. The family could not afford a new computer and Mr Sajdak was tasked with fixing it. He worked tirelessly to figure it out and in doing so, his love for IT flourished.

Growing up with hippie parents on the Sunshine Coast, no one could have predicted he would go on to become one of the state’s most dynamic tech entrepreneurs. The founder of BITS Technology Group, he owns three IT businesses and is a multi-award-winning entrepreneur. But he has not forgotten his roots.

“The irony that all my businesses are in tech is not lost on my parents,” Mr Sajdak says. “I wasn’t allowed to play with guns, let alone computers and tech.

They think it’s pretty funny. They are the best parents anybody could ask for.

“They’re my best friends and they’re just proud of me. They say I was always pretty driven and I always had a bit of a notion that if I wanted to do something, I’d make it happen.

“When I had to fix the computer, it was the first time I had a real responsibility and had to figure something out for myself. Mum and Dad didn’t know how to fix it. Dad was playing music and doing what he could to support the family.

“We lived at Mudjimba back when it was literally nothing, just half a dozen houses. My dad was a muso and a carpenter, helping do all the construction happening at Noosa in the late ’80s. On the nights and weekends, he’d play at local bars.

“They were old hippies at heart and liked the alternative lifestyle Maleny offered, so we moved up there and I went to Maleny State School until I was about

We can all play our part to turn the tide. “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept”, (Lieutenant General David Morrison), whilst said in the context of bullying and harassment, it applies equally to Domestic Violence, if we do not hold friends and family accountable for bad behaviours then we accept it as the standard, so call out bad behaviour, do not tolerate it amongst your friends or family, take a stand. 1. Build a support network – there are people who want to help, let them.

2. Have a plan – if you decide to leave, make a plan first and involve your support network.

3. Get important documents together – make copies and get your family or friends to look after them so they don’t get left behind.

After travelling around Australia, the Sajdak family settled in to the town they believed was the most beautiful in Australia – Kingscliff. Mr Sajdak now lives on the Gold Coast to be near his parents, but has fond memories of his younger years in Maleny.

“Growing up, I loved going to Mary Cairncross park in Maleny. I loved the Glass House Mountains. I remember there was never a lack of wildlife around.

“We had a couple of acres and I’ll always remember my aspiration when we lived in Maleny was to drive a tractor with a slasher on it. It’s a far cry from what I do now. We lived in a little cottage with a potbelly stove; it was very rural.

We didn’t have TV for a long time and when we did have one, it was tiny. We just ran around, played in the bush and tried not to get caught in the lantana.

“I go back pretty often and I still have lots of friends there,” he says. “My heart will always be there. It’s a beautiful spot and when I’m done trying to conquer the world, I could end up living there again.

“It has become modernised and is now a tourist destination. You can only keep a good thing secret for so long. In my line of work, one of the things we’ve

seen is the advent of the internet. Before, if you lived in Maleny, you worked in Maleny. It was a community and you had to live and work there. Now, we live in a global community. I could run my businesses in Maleny because of how connected we are.”

Mr Sajdak runs three businesses: a managed IT services business; Cloud Torque, which is a digital workspace; and his latest venture, HomeGuardian, an artificial intelligence device that is a world-first in falls-detection technology.

Driven by the worry for their family and friends’ health and safety, HomeGuardian was created to save lives.

“We launched it in October and the reception has been really dramatic. I’ve presented it at Parliament House and the Royal Commission into Aged Care. We need help in Australia to care for the elderly. Part of the challenge is that 50 per cent of aged-care workers will have retired and be in care themselves in 15 years’ time. We would have to employ about 2000 people a month, every month until 2047 to keep up with the demand to retain the current level of care that we have.

“People caring for the elderly is not a solution. Not enough people are applying to be aged-care nurses. How we can solve these problems is with really smart,

ethical technology. This is a monitoring device that sits in the room and monitors all behaviour. If an elderly person falls on the ground, it alerts a nurse to come. It also detects violence or abuse. It does all of this by detecting it on the device and alerting whoever is set up to respond to it. The fact we’re not sending any pictures or videos means we don’t compromise people’s privacy and dignity – nobody wants a CCTV camera in their bedroom.

“It looks like a small speaker and it’s

“Mum and Dad live 45 minutes away from me and I worry about them. People die because they have a fall and we don’t get to them fast enough. Some people lie on the floor for days – what a horrible way to go. We’ve made this an

inexpensive device that allows someone to respond immediately.”

The product sold out of its first production run and will be global by the end of the year.

“I’m very passionate about it,” says Mr Sajdak. “It’s saving people like my mum and dad. Nobody else in the world is doing it the way we’re doing it and it’s saving people’s loved ones.”

Mr Sajdak says he knows he’s onto a good thing because even his hippie dad – who says he wouldn’t want Big Brother watching him – feels comfortable having a HomeGuardian in his house.

It seems things have come full circle – from a young Mr Sajdak breaking his mum’s computer and having to learn how to fix it, to now having invented his own device that accompanies his parents as they grow older and allows him to live a very busy life on the cutting edge of tech entrepreneurship, knowing his parents are okay.

“It was a fate thing, breaking the computer,” he says. “My parents barely had the money to get one computer, so there’s no way they’d have been able to buy another one. The universe put me in a position where I had to figure it out. It’s funny how a combination of the right place, right time and right circumstances have led me to where I am today.”

THE MAGICAL WISH CHIP

A

little gift came my way this week that will bring me much joy until the day I drop off this planet.

And we need some simple daily happiness, as the news in our world is as bleak as I can remember. So I share this gift of joy with you as well. Behold the Wish Chip. It is a thing people!

I have spent four decades of my life unaware there is a name for those potato crisps in the packet that are folded over.

They are almost a double chip and many believe they hold a magical force. Some people also include ‘bubble’ chips (those with pockets of air in them) as wish chips.

I started asking my friends if they knew about the wish chip for their whole lives.

Most said of course they had heard of the wish chip. For many of them, the wish chip must be eaten in a certain way, otherwise the wish is voided. For example, the chip cannot be touched by the thumb and must be picked up between the ‘wish fingers’ (the middle and index fingers.)

There is much debate about the actual process of eating the chip, as some friends said the chip must be swallowed and eaten without opening your mouth or the wish will be crushed. Other friends said they smash the chip on their foreheads and let the chip crumble to the ground. One whacky mate said she crushes the chip against the roof of her mouth with her tongue.

There are of course, other food rituals

that make us feel plain good. Christmas bon-bons (not crackers) is a wonderful part of the festivities in our house at Christmas time. Leftover ham on Boxing Day for breakfast means the world is in order. What about the wishbone in a whole chicken? It will always remind me of my grandma, who taught me the tradition of drying it on the kitchen bench before making a wish with someone else. But you had to wait 24 hours for the wishbone to dry and then share it with someone and you only had a 50 per cent chance of winning the larger part of the bone for your chance to make a wish. The wish chip is all yours.

Toasting glasses and saying “cheers” while looking your loved one or friend in the eye is a big part of our family culture.

Probably because we are soaks. But our kids have always joined us to toast their plastic cups filled with water when its happy hour time. That little bit in the mandarin is also believed to be good luck if you swallow it whole.

Of course, the biggest food ritual is the cutting of your birthday cake. First we sing, then we blow out candles. Then we kiss the nearest boy if we haven’t blown out every single candle. Then we sing again. Then we cut the cake and make a wish, except your wish doesn’t come true if you touch the bottom of the cake base. That is actually a lot of rituals for one humble birthday cake!

I love a ritual and who doesn’t love a bonus wish in their day?

o you ever get the feeling that we may be taking ourselves a little too seriously and that we’ve all become a bunch of busybodies?

It seems everyone has an opinion on everything these days (and yes, I do see the hypocrisy of that statement considering I am writing an opinion piece).

Nobody seems to just say, “I don’t know” or “I can’t really put myself in someone else’s shoes so who am I to judge?” or “You know what, maybe that person knows their child better than I do”.

The latest outrage reverberating on the echo chamber that is the internet is a mum who had the audacity to pack her son’s lunch with plenty of food.

Other parents were apparently “gobsmacked” and declared the mum was packing a lunch that was “way too much” and “would be my kids’ lunch and recess for a week”.

There is no doubt the lunch was big, according to the news article it included: two sandwiches, three muesli bars, two mini muffins, a bag of grapes, two bananas three pre-packaged cheese snacks, cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, and a cucumber, along with an apple, two nectarines and small bag of nuts.

But this was for a 17-year old active boy who played lots of sport after school and, well, is a teenage boy.

When I was that age, I’d eat my packed

lunch at school and then come home and scoff half a packet of Arnott’s Family Assorted – in my family Assorted Creams were only eaten by the rich or the bereaved – and follow that with three glasses of red cordial, a few handfuls of sultanas and a couple of peanut butter and honey sandwiches. And I was thin as a rake.

But I digress. It doesn’t really matter whether the lunch is too big or too small or just right. This is about a bunch of adults piling on to discuss another person’s

What is lacking in your life that you feel you need to bring down someone else?

To be fair – the woman did post the photo of her son’s daily lunchbox on Facebook, so she may have invited some of the commentary.

But wouldn’t we all be better off to practise some old-school manners and discretion about what we decide to bite into?

Or as Jane Austen put it in Pride and Prejudice: “Keep your breath to cool your porridge”.

GET ON BOARD TO HELP A LOCAL FAMILY RAISE FUNDS The community is coming together on Sunday, March 8 to help local boy Jarrah Jones raise funds to purchase a purpose-built vehicle that will help him enjoy the activities he loves.

In 2018 at the age of 13, Jarrah was diagnosed with Wilson’s disease. It’s a rare inherited disease that affects approximately one in 30,000 people.

Before his diagnosis, Jarrah’s hobbies included running, acting and creating YouTube videos. But in the past two years, as a result of the disease, his speech and mobility have been severely impacted. He has undergone a number of surgeries, and is now confined to a wheelchair.

The Mary Valley Rattler team hopes to raise $4000 as part of the upcoming charity day. This will be used to help purchase the vehicle.

Mary Valley Rattler general manager Mike Green says, “We can appreciate that it must be a difficult journey for Jarrah and his family. After speaking with the family, we understand that their current fundraising project to purchase a purpose-built vehicle would be of great value in transporting Jarrah to medical appointments and provide an opportunity for him to get out and about, in general.”

The Red Rocket railmotor has been recently reconfigured to accommodate

“Having the capacity to take wheelchairs on board the Rattler ensures the whole community can enjoy the full heritage experience at the Gympie and Amamoor stations and on board the popular Rattler Tasting Train and Rattler Picnic Train experiences, as well as the steam services over the six days that the Rattler currently operate,” says Mr Green.

The Red Rocket will be on track and ready to venture off for the day, to showcase the beauty of the Mary Valley to patrons. Morning tea will be offered onboard. Friends of Amamoor community group will be cooking up a sausage sizzle and the last stop will be a wine and cheese tasting provided by the Dagun Community Group, with a goodie bag to take home.

It will be a great day out for the whole family – they can all experience a scenic train ride while contributing to a great fundraising cause.

PROPERTY PRICES RISE WHILE INTEREST RATES STAY LOW High demand for Sunshine Coast property is pushing prices up, say our local property experts. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

ouse prices are rising and interest rates are still low. So what does this mean for our property market?

REA Group economic research director Cameron Kusher says while interest rates often play a part in stimulating the property market, over recent years, low interest rates have resulted in periods of both high and low volumes of sales.

“Lending policies are really the main driver of whether we see a high volume

or low volume of sales. Looking at search activity on realestate.com.au, we are seeing increasingly high demand and rising property prices on the Sunshine Coast, but there is still an issue with an undersupply of properties available for sale,” Mr Kusher explains.

“Over the past 12 months, prices in the region are 2.9 per cent higher, which represents stronger growth than both Brisbane and Gold Coast. Price growth on the Sunshine Coast has been stronger more

recently with prices 1.9 per cent higher over the past six months.”

Principal at McGrath Estate Agents, Chris Pace, says they’re seeing people motivated by the low interest rates to buy rather than rent. “We’re seeing a shift from young couples renting keen to break their lease and buy because, in many cases, mortgage repayments can be cheaper than weekly rent.”

He says now is a good time to buy on the Coast. “The sooner the better, as we are feeling that 2020 is going to be a great year for growth. We haven’t seen a start to a year busier than what January and February have already been this year.”

Brendan Brial of SMS Finance, says low interest rates and a buoyant property market provides borrowers the opportunity to increase their loans for home improvements, upgrades or purchasing an investment property.

“It also provides an opportunity for borrowers to talk to their mortgage broker and see if there is a better interest rate.”

And while upgrades and borrowing suit some, Mr Kusher says low interest rates generally mean that buyers can repay their

mortgage faster because the interest component of the loan is reduced. “It may also mean that they can borrow more than they would be able to if rates were higher.

“A mortgage is a 25 to 30-year commitment and market conditions and interest rates will fluctuate over that time, so the most important thing to consider is purchasing within your budget,” Mr Kusher adds.

Mr Brial echoes that sentiment: “Borrowers still need to be very mindful of their personal circumstances when borrowing any amount of money. Changes to their income, living expenses, increases in interest rates or growing their families can impact their ability to make repayments in the future.

“You never can tell how long the current low interest rates will continue. At some point they will increase and borrowers should be careful not to put themselves in a position that an increase in rates would affect their overall capacity to make their repayments,” Mr Brial adds.

Overall, our experts agree that Coast property stock is low, which is to the benefit of homeowners that may want to capitalise.

SURF REPORT

It’s looking to be a typical autumn weekend as far as the surf goes.

Easterly and north-easterly winds should be the norm. With early to mid-morning high tides throughout the week, the run out may help it stand up a little more.

The swell is straight from the east with not much size to it, so getting in early to beat the winds and checking out those protected spots out of the NE winds like Kings Beach, the pocket at Kawana and Sunshine Beach will be your best bet. All in all it’s set to be great beach conditions.
