T

he past two weeks have been emotionally tough in terms of reading and reporting on the news around our country. I can’t even begin to imagine what the families of these victims are enduring.

Many a tear has been shed, heads hung in sorrow and emotionally-fuelled conversations had around the nation. How can you continue to have faith in humankind among these horrors and heartbreak?

One thing that did lift my spirits was watching as nine-year-old bullying victim Quaden Bayles held his head high as he accompanied the NRL All Stars Indigenous team onto the footy field at the weekend. Quaden has fast become the face of anti-bullying.

This week we tackle the issue of bullying in our Opinion editorial section on page 26. This is an issue that we plan to continue to bring awareness to throughout 2020.

As a weekly lifestyle publication, it can be challenging to cover hard-hitting news stories in a timely and appropriate manner. This doesn’t mean that we aren’t feeling and thinking the same thing you are.

If your life was a book, what would the title be? Please, Keep Underestimating Me.

If you could change one thing on the Coast, what would it be? All the new housing with no backyards.

Best day in your life? This is such a difficult question.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? My life purpose was to be of service and most of my journey so far has been about what I can do to help others. My father passed away in July 2018 and before he passed away, he said “look after you first and then everyone else�. Food waste. So much food is wasted in the world while one in nine people in the world do not have enough food to eat.

What are you watching right now and why do you love it? I love watching Friends with my family.

What achievement are you most proud of? My children. They have grown up to be decent humans with beautiful hearts.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I meditate and journal to keep me in a space of gratefulness.

Autumn flavours When we think of autumn we think of fresh produce – crunchy apples, juicy pears, sweet figs. To celebrate the start of the new season, we have compiled some of our favourite autumn recipes.

Serve this yummy curry over rice, sprinkled with fresh coriander.

KIM’S K IM’S P PUMPKIN UM AND EGGPLANT CURRY Serves 4 • 400g pumpkin, peeled and chopped into chunks • 1 eggplant (450g), chopped into chunks • 1 – 1½ tbsp. red curry paste • 400ml coconut milk METHOD 1. Preheat oven 180ºC. 2. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

3. Bake the peeled and chopped pumpkin for 10 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, in a large non-stick frying pan, sauté eggplant until lightly golden.

5. Add the pumpkin, then 1 tbsp red curry paste and toss gently to coat.

6. Reduce the heat, add the coconut milk, and simmer for 20 minutes, allowing time for the sauce to reduce and the flavours to develop.

7. Season to taste (adding a little more curry paste if you like).

• 2.5kg boneless pork leg roast • 2 tbsp olive oil • 500g shallots, peeled • 1 cup chicken stock

• 1 tbsp sea salt • 2 cloves garlic • 350ml apple cider • 3 large apples, peeled and cut into wedges

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 220°C. Pat pork with paper towel. Score rind with a sharp knife and place pork in a large baking dish. Rub pork with oil and sprinkle with salt. Place in the oven and roast for 25 minutes until the rind is golden and crackled.

2. Reduce oven temperature to 180°C and add the shallots to the pan along with the cider and chicken stock. Cover with foil and cook for 2 ½ hours.

Remove the foil and add the apples before returning to the oven for another 30 minutes or until the apples are just tender.

3. Remove the pork, shallots and apples from the pan and place on a plate and cover with foil. Put the baking dish with the pan juices over a high heat and bring to the boil. When boiling, reduce the heat to medium and allow to simmer until the sauce thickens slightly. Slice the pork and serve with shallots, apples, your choice of vegetables and drizzle with the sauce.

In a hurry but still craving a nutritious meal? Throw this easy and wholesome salad together in 10 minutes. Heat a splash of olive oil in a frypan over a medium heat. Add thinly sliced blocks of haloumi and lightly fry each side until golden. Remove from pan and add a tin of chickpeas. Toss in the pan for a few minutes. Mix chickpeas, washed watercress and haloumi together. Top with halved figs and a drizzle of sweet balsamic glaze.

FOODS TO EAT THIS AUTUMN With winter only three months away, now is the ideal time to build your immune system and prep your body for the cold and flu season. Eating well is the key to maintaining good health.

The Sunshine Coast is home to an array of fresh produce. In fact, the region’s food and agribusiness industry is valued at $700 million.

Here are some of our favourite autumn flavours.

1. Pears – Full of antioxidants, pears are also packed with dietary fibre. You can juice them or add them to cereal or muesli for a hearty breakfast. They are also perfect for tarts or tortes.

2. Apples – A good source of fibre and vitamins, apples are a versatile fruit. Eat them raw, add them to salads such as a fresh coleslaw, throw them into a muffin mix with a sprinkle of cinnamon or stew them to make a beautiful compote.

3. Beetroot – What can’t beetroots do? Packed with manganese, potassium, vitamin C, fibre, folate and iron, these vegetables are also delicious when roasted and added to salads. Or juice them fresh with mint and apples.

4. Persimmon – High in vitamins, folate and magnesium, this interesting fruit can be eaten whole and fresh. They are also great to add to salads.

5. Figs – We love this fruit because the taste possibilities are endless. From fig and carrot cakes to fig and avocado toasted sandwiches, there is nothing you can’t do with this delicious produce. They are high in antioxidants and vitamins A and K. 6. Eggplant – If you don’t yet love eggplant, then we are here to change your mind. Fried, baked or added to your favourite curry, this is one vegetable that is underrated. High in fibre, vitamin B6 and antioxidants, the eggplant is as good for your heart as it is for your tummy.

7. Grapes – This is the best time of the year to purchase Australian-grown grapes. They are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fibre and delicious in a fruit salad, green salad or in desserts.

A FUN-FILLED FAMILY DAY WE ALL LOVED Sunshine Plaza’s new Supersaver Fun Pass was a great way for this family of four to save money on a fantastic day out. WORDS Leigh Robshaw.

A

family day out including a movie, lunch and entertainment can really add up. So when we heard about the new Supersaver Fun Pass available at Sunshine Plaza, we were keen to try it out. We explained to our kids the Supersaver Fun Passes would allow us to have lunch at our choice from the 10 participating restaurants, a movie, 30 minutes each at Timezone and a gelato. Their eyes almost popped out of their heads.

We informed the kids they could choose which order we would partake of these delights and they agreed lunch should come first. The Fun Pass Menu offers a variety of meal options from the 10 participating restaurants found at the popular Riverwalk precinct and new Cornmeal Promenade.

We looked at the meal deals on offer and decided to try Fratelli Fresh, which we’d never been to before.

There were plenty of choices for both kids and adults and the service was fast and friendly. Our six-year-old was delighted with his ham and cheese pizza shaped into bunny ears, and my husband said his Capricciosa pizza with a freshly made sourdough base was hands-down the best pizza he’d ever eaten. I chose a kids’ meal – a light chicken salad – and gave my adult’s voucher to my ravenous 14-year-old son. He devoured the signature Lamb Ragu Pasta and was quite enamoured with his Lychee Bella drink. We all tried each other’s meals and high-fived over our excellent choices.

Finding a family movie that will please a teenager and a Grade 1 kid and not bore their parents silly is not an easy task. Sonic the Hedgehog fit the bill perfectly. It’s the new live-action animation based on the Sega video game and it’s heaps of fun. Sonic is a super-fast blue alien hedgehog who is sent to

Earth to escape dangerous forces on his planet and seems destined for a lonely life, until he joins forces with the local cop Tom (James Marsden) to escape evil scientist Ivo Robotnik, played brilliantly by Jim Carrey. It is a fast-paced, funny and visually spectacular film that had all four of us laughing out loud.

Having ticked lunch and the movie off our list, the kids ran at sonic speed to Timezone, located next door to BCC Cinemas. It was gaming galore from the second we walked through the doors and the boys were keen to get full use out of their allocated 30 minutes Time Play voucher on red and yellow swiper games and 200 powertickets. When their time was up, we gave them our 30-minute passes, content for the kids to lose themselves in the sensory extravaganza. We tagged along and watched their beaming smiles and faces set in deep concentration as they shot zombies and basketball hoops, knocked down bowling pins, scored soccer goals, rode virtual motorbikes and sped around the track in racecars.

Just when they thought the fun was over, we remembered the gelatos! We stopped in at House of Gelato on the way back to the car park – I may or may not have excused myself

to go to the toilet and somehow landed at the Cantina de Mad Mex for a margarita, while the boys had their ice-creams with their dad.

As we drove home, it was quiet. Too quiet. There was a distinct lack of voices in the back seat asking to do just one more thing, eat one more thing or go anywhere else. They were fully satisfied after a big day out of non-stop family fun and they both crashed out in the car.

The Supersaver Fun Pass is a fantastic idea for families and we’re definitely going to go again. The Coast’s proposed historic cultural heritage planning scheme amendment has been referred to the State Government for final ministerial review following community feedback. More than 385 submissions were received, providing vital insight into the best ways to protect and manage the Coast’s local heritage locations.

Heritage Portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski thanked the community for showing significant interest in the proposed amendment. The amendment will provide new protection for the Maroochy River boathouse jetties and other iconic heritage places across the Sunshine Coast.

USC OPENS NEW CAMPUS FOR BRISBANE’S NORTH SIDE Queensland’s Inspector-General Emergency Management recently released results from the independent review of the September 2019 fires at Stanthorpe, Sarabah and Peregian Springs. The review found Queensland’s preparedness and response was highly effective in saving property and reducing the severity of fires, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk describing efforts as a “phenomenal response to extraordinary conditions”. Sunshine Coast Local Disaster coordinator Tom Jamieson says Sunshine Coast Council and the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) stood ready to assist the community in any disaster or emergency.

“The findings from the 2019 Queensland Bushfires Review confirm our commitment to disaster preparedness paid off when our community needed it most. Queensland’s newest university campus at Petrie at north Brisbane has welcomed 1200 students for its inaugural O-Week. All other USC campuses, including USC Sippy Downs celebrated O-Week and their first week of the semester. The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) has campuses at Sippy Downs, Caboolture, Gympie, Fraser Coast and South Brisbane and won the public tender in late 2015 to operate the latest university campus at Petrie. Construction on the highly anticipated $18-million Brisbane Road car park redevelopment in Mooloolaba has reached a milestone with a 28-metre crane now on site and expected to remain there until around the end of October 2020. The eight-storey multi-deck car park will take parking spaces from 176 to more than 700. It will also include ground floor retail outlets facing First Avenue. The upgrade will improve connectivity in the heart of Mooloolaba and improve safety for all road users. Sunshine Coast Council has also been continuing with the expression of interest and tender processes for the southern parcel fronting Brisbane Road and First Avenue.

VIRTUAL FAUNA FENCING SAVING WILDLIFE A new approach to managing wildlife road crossing incidents on the Sunshine Coast is being trialled at Sippy Downs. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, has installed an acoustic fence and will also be adding purpose-built electronic signs along Sippy Downs Drive with the goal of reducing incidents involving kangaroos along this stretch of road. The ‘virtual fence’ and the electronic signs are designed to change both kangaroo and driver behaviour. There are 72 posts installed and the trial will run for six months.

How accurate is the Instagram post that claims the coronavirus has killed 75,000 people? WORDS: Factcheck for AAP.

THE STATEMENT As the number of cases of the 2019 novel coronavirus continue to climb, information on the number of people infected and the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) response to the outbreak continues to spread on social media.

An Instagram post from January 31, 2020 features a claim that WHO has called the coronavirus “a plague”.

The post’s text reads, “BREAKING: World Health Organization officially declares the Coronavirus as a plague,

as [sic] estimated 340,000 people are infected in China and 75,000 dead”.

The text is overlaid onto an image of an intravenous drip bottle hanging from a stand.

The post has been viewed more than 30,000 times and has attracted more than 1700 likes and 100 comments.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the 2019 coronavirus outbreak is a public health emergency.

THE ANALYSIS The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. It is a new strain in the coronavirus family – a group of viruses that also includes the SARS and MERS respiratory infections.

Coronaviruses can be transmitted between animals and humans.

According to the WHO, a plague is a

specific infectious disease caused by a bacteria called Yersinia pestis. The bacteria is usually found in small mammals and their fleas and can be transmitted between animals and humans by the bite of infected fleas, direct contact with infected tissue or inhalation of infected respiratory droplets.

Professor Basil Donovan, an expert on infectious diseases at the University of NSW Faculty of Medicine, tells AAP FactCheck the word “plague” could also mean a very large outbreak or an epidemic.

“It’s not a formally defined term.

The trouble with wordplay, it’s got an emotional overlay. It has no meaning in medicine,” Professor Donovan says.

“It’s not a scientific term. It’s good for clickbait. It doesn’t add any meaning to anything.”

On January 30, 2020, the WHO convened its Emergency Committee to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) over the global outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus.

The declaration of a PHEIC by the WHO signifies “an extraordinary event” that requires a co-ordinated international response.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the main reason for the declaration is “not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries”.

“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems and which are ill-prepared to deal with this,” he says.

According to the WHO coronavirus update on February 19, 2020, there have been 75,204 confirmed cases globally; 74,280 of those cases were in China. The WHO also confirmed 2006 deaths from the coronavirus outbreak in China and three deaths outside China.

The latest figures from the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China (NHC) reported on February 18, 2020 that 74,185 cases had

been confirmed in the country.

According to the Wuhan Coronavirus Global Cases reporting tool created by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering, the tally of confirmed cases on mainland China stood at 74,576 with 2122 confirmed deaths as of 12pm (AEST) February 20, 2020. There were four deaths outside China, in the Phillipines, Taiwan, China and France.

All three sources put the total tally for people infected in China well under the figure of 340,000 that was claimed in the Instagram post.

The Instagram user who posted the January 31 post shared an identical image on January 29, 2020, with that post’s caption including the word, “Cap”.

According to dictionary.com’s slang dictionary, “cap” comes from the slang expression “no cap” which means “no lie” or “for real” to “emphasise someone is not exaggerating about something hard to believe”.

Urban Dictionary also defines “That’s cap” as a term used for when someone’s actions are “unexceptional” or “fake”.

The original post appears to have been posted on a Twitter account. AAP FactCheck searched Twitter using the Advanced Search tool for the phrase but could not locate the original tweet.

THE VERDICT FALSE The primary claims of the content are factually inaccurate.

Based on the evidence, AAP FactCheck found the Instagram post to be false. While the WHO has declared the 2019 coronavirus outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, it has not deemed the outbreak as a “plague”.

Also, the number of infections and deaths globally are far below the numbers claimed in the post. Although the Instagram user labelled the claim in their first upload with “cap”, potentially indicating the post was false, many users appear unaware the post contains false information.

ocal cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon Dr Mark McGovern believes young people could be valuing their tan for display on social media more than their lives.

“I think it’s disturbing,” he says. “If you walk along Sunshine Coast beaches there’s still young people baking themselves as best they can and working hard to develop their skin cancers despite successes of the ‘slip, slap, slop’ campaigns.”

Dr McGovern runs the Vie Institute at Maroochydore and has been working in the region for more than 25 years. Sun cancer prevention and treatment are a major focus of his practice.

“I’m treating large and increasing numbers of people with melanoma, particularly young people. We are identifying and treating cases with the disease about every two weeks,” he says.

“It’s usually a wake-up call for most of them to be diagnosed with something as serious as that at such a young age.”

world and the Sunshine Coast is a particularly bad hotspot for melanoma, with more than 515 people diagnosed and 52 deaths on average per year.

Melanoma patients can be referred to Dr McGovern with suspicious lesions for assessment or to take a biopsy, or they have already been biopsied, and he definitively removes the melanoma.

He cautions that in rare cases, every few years there are instances where melanoma doesn’t have pigmentation, so when it comes to removing it completely, he has to keep chipping away at it until results show the area is free from disease.

Regular skin checks are extremely important to keep on top of potential cancers, because if detected early, 90 per cent of melanomas can be successfully treated with surgery alone.

The range of scientific advances to treat the condition has also now improved, so there are much greater prospects of survival than there used to be, but it’s still a highly aggressive cancer and treatment can be tough.

Having lost his sister Tess McGowan-Chan to melanoma at the age of 31 in 2012, founder of bakslap and sun safety advocate Raphael McGowan is organising the Melanoma March in the region again this year.

“Last year over 550 people took part in a Melanoma March at Alex, raising $28,500 together, so we’re hoping that 1000 people will come down this time,” he says.

“We’re excited to bring the event to our region again and bring people together to remember loved ones and get behind the cause locally.”

The community is invited to participate in a fourkilometre walk to raise awareness of sun safety, melanoma and dangerous skin cancers.

The event supports Melanoma Institute Australia’s national fundraising campaign to raise $1 million. It’s an opportunity to inspire others, support or remember loved ones and help to find a cure for Melanoma.

here’s a new type of fun riding into town and it’s putting big smiles on the faces of our senior citizens.

It’s called Cycling Without Age. The big-hearted organisation is delivering healthy and fun opportunities for our community in the form of volunteer-piloted trishaw bike rides along our picturesque local pathways.

This initiative is a first for the Sunshine Coast, but is already an international sensation, originating in Denmark in 2012 before expanding to

45 countries around the world.

The free program is now pedalling onto a coastal pathway near you after receiving council funding to put its wheels in motion.

It gives our elderly community, as well as people with reduced mobility, an opportunity to get outside into the fresh air and explore our beautiful coastline.

The specially designed bikes seat two passengers comfortably and is ridden by a volunteer ‘pilot’.

Cycling Without Age community captain Tim Rogers says the simple act of providing free rides is

invaluable. “I am amazed by the reactions we see from the people who ride on a trishaw,” Mr Rogers says.

Cycling Without Age is always looking for more volunteer ‘pilots’ to help expand the program and provide services right along the Coast and throughout the region.

The program will push off from Currimundi Lake, Kings Beach and Birtinya, and pedal along the lakes and coastal pathways before expanding across the region.

CLEAN UP FOR THE HATCHLINGS Despite the wet weather, 635 enthusiastic community members, including nearly 20 snorkellers, volunteered for the seventh annual Clean Up for the Hatchlings, helping to clean up 17 sites from Caloundra to Coolum.

A total of 596 kilograms of rubbish was collected, according to event organiser and Sunshine Coast Council Conservation and Wildlife Officer Dr Simone Bosshard.

Following the clean-up activities, hundreds of volunteers enjoyed a free barbecue, activities, speakers and more at La Balsa Park in Buddina, where they also weighed and sorted the debris collected, contributing to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database.

FUTURE’S LOOKING BRIGHT FOR SUNSHINE COAST STADIUM Sunshine Coast Stadium at Bokarina is readying for an even brighter future with a $2.7 million lighting upgrade nearing completion. The Sunshine Coast’s premier sporting facility will soon have broadcast lighting standards, attracting international and national sporting teams. Two 200-tonne cranes were used to install new light poles and the original poles and lights will be removed next month, weather permitting.

The upgrades will deliver significant economic and social value to our community as we retain a healthy, smart and creative region.

BULCOCK STREET SET TO SHINE WITH NEW BESPOKE LIGHTING FEATURE A region-first light installation will soon brighten up Caloundra, making it the final component of the Stage 3 Bulcock Street streetscape upgrade.

The major design features a bespoke 60-lineal metre canopy of LED lights that will weave across and along Bulcock Street; aiming to enhance the look and overall experience of the area.

The vibrant canopy is created with nine custom-made light poles with timber inserts called ‘ibeams’, which will support an overhead web of cables, known as a ‘catenary’.

Works will begin on the decorative lighting installation after the Easter School holiday period with a combination of night and day works, starting on April 20 and estimated to be completed by June 30.

NEW ERA FOR COAST’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE The completion of the $8.18 million redevelopment of The Events Centre Caloundra was marked with a colourful celebration of the venue’s almost 40-year history.

Entertainment industry leaders and local performing arts enthusiasts joined the community to take a look inside the Events Centre, which now boasts state-of-the-art technology, new catering facilities, a new lift and amenities and the latest sound equipment to ensure a superb visitor experience.

The upgrade wouldn’t have been possible without the partnership of the Australian Government, which provided a $2.96 million grant under the Building Better Regions Fund, and the generous community and business supporters who donated approximately $42,000.

believing The frustrating experience of losing his glasses overseas led a Sunshine Coast innovator to develop a worldfirst product that is set to change the lives of people who need prescription glasses. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

n 2015, Maroochydore businessman Darrell Edwards was holidaying in Spain when he lost his glasses. He couldn’t read his phone without them, which meant he couldn’t use Google Maps to get around, he couldn’t send text messages or make phone calls.

An idea came to him like a bolt from the blue: why not design a prescription screen protector that eliminates the need to put your glasses on every time you look at your phone?

Five years and many hours of research and development later, he is on the verge of launching a world-first product that will eliminate the need to reach for your reading glasses every time you use your phone (which for most people is more than 150 times a day).

“I thought to myself, if I’m looking at a glass screen, why can’t I have it made to meet my prescription?”

His product, ForgetSPECS, is a prescription screen protector that uses nanotechnology to create a film that brings your screen into focus.

The local business community will recognise Mr Edwards as the former CEO of the Regional Development Australia, Sunshine Coast. What they won’t know is that during the two years he held this role, he was spending his evenings and weekends developing the product in the hope it will remove the frustration millions of people experience with putting their glasses on every time they need to look at their phone.

“I’ve wanted to get rid of my glasses since I was about 25,” he says. “My script is +2. I hate carrying my glasses around with me. I hate wearing them. With the reliance on mobile phones these days, people are even more reliant on their glasses. I thought it was just me that was frustrated with wearing glasses, but everyone I talk to says they want to be able to read their device without glasses anywhere, anytime.”

Mr Edwards spent a few years researching the idea and in 2018, decided

to devote himself to it full time. “I set out on a global search for a manufacture who could make our prototypes,” he says. “That led me to Japan, Singapore, China, Germany and finally the USA, where my current manufacturer is, as well as my current mould manufacturer. I’ve spent over 12 months working with them to develop a prototype. There have been a few blows along the way, but that just makes me more determined to find a solution.

“I’ve had so many no’s and knockbacks, people saying it can’t be done. When you start stumping up large amounts of your hard-earned capital and your family’s capital, you really start to question, will it work? Is it worthwhile? Are the risks worth it? Am I just being pig-headed and can’t see the forest for the trees? You’re constantly second-guessing yourself and that’s where persistence and resilience comes into it to keep fighting for what you believe in.”

Originally a Wide Bay boy who spent many years working for ANZ, Mr Edwards has lived on the Sunshine Coast most of his adult life. He has two adult sons and lives in Maroochydore with his wife of nearly 33 years, Margo.

“She motivates me,” he says. “She is the reality check. She is always challenging my thinking and she brings out the best in me.

I’ve always been innovative in coming up with different ways of doing things; even when I worked in banking, I was trying to challenge the norm. When I took eight

months off in 2015 and went to Spain, I started looking into business opportunities – this one and quite a few other ideas. I decided this would be the one I would focus on.”

Mr Edwards gets up each morning and has a beach walk before heading to the Innovation Centre at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where he enjoys being surrounded by a startup culture of entrepreneurial, like-minded people.

“You often get an exchange of ideas and we support each other,” he says. “It’s a different mentality to normal business, particularly if you’re trying to launch a startup.”

Mr Edwards says ForgetSPECS will release one screen protector per phone model and it will cover a range of scripts from zero to +3.5.

“We’re focusing on Apple and Samsung devices at first,” he says. “The best feedback we’ve received is from a guy who’s got a +3.5 prescription. When I gave him my phone, he said he could read it. I said, ‘Now, take off your glasses’. He couldn’t believe his eyes – he could still read it. He was just blown away.

“I’ve spoken to people who are in the screen protector business and they’ve never heard of anything like this before. They can’t wait to get their hands on it. If there was another product out there like this, I would have bought it in 2015.

“This is a world-first product.

The technology we’re using is nanotechnology. We work with lenses that are measured in the size of microns, which is one-thousandth of a millimetre – so small we can’t even see it with a light microscope. Each screen protector contains millions of tiny nanotechnology lenses. Trying to get the light refraction right, as well as embedding it into the lenses, has been difficult. I guess that’s why nobody’s done it in the past. But through hard work and persistence, we’ve created a world-first product.”

GETTING REAL ABOUT BULLYING

Sami Muirhead remembers an iconic woman who set a high standard for generations of young women growing up in Australia.

Candice Holznagel says parents need to be addressing bullying with their children and having frank discussions about its effects.

ale Ms June Dally-Watkins. The Australian etiquette icon died with her family around her aged 92. I always had a soft spot for this groundbreaking businesswoman. I was 16 with grand hopes to be a model, so I saved up my checkout operator wage to pay the $120 fee to do her modelling, deportment and manners course back in 1989. It was some of the best money I ever spent, as I was a gangly six-foot teenager with frizzy hair who really had no idea about what fork or spoon to use with what at the dinner table and no idea that a crop top was not okay to wear to a job interview.

Ms Dally-Watkins presented my certificate after I completed the course and pulled me aside to tell me my eye makeup was “ghastly, darling”. My eye shadow was green with glitter. Ms Dally (everyone called her that and everyone was slightly terrified of her) told me to wear “warm bronze colours to look far more elegant”.

I did from that day onwards.

I also learnt a few lessons in handling blokes. Ms Dally’s advice was to simply say nothing if a guy made a rude joke in your presence. “Do not smile or laugh or even acknowledge the smutty remark has been made,” Ms Dally told us. It sounds sexist today, but it helped me get through the 1990s working in media when blokes could be pretty sleazy. I just needed to be told it was okay to not join in to try and be cool or part of the joke. I am not a person who

loves confrontation, so simply saying nothing was powerful advice for me. Try it.

Sometimes (not always) silence is a weapon and gets the point across loud and clear. Now that I am middle-aged, I would have the courage to tell someone if I was offended, but the naïve 16-year-old me had no idea how to navigate the rules of life.

Today, thanks to the #METOO movement, young women are taught to speak up and reduce the chance to be exploited, but this was before times changed.

I wonder who our teenagers will look up to for role models. I sound about 150 years of age this week, but I worry our teen’s self-worth is based on their sex appeal and their Instagram likes. Mind you, my nine-year-old has a few role models and they are pretty amazing.

Bindi Irwin tops the list and she is someone who promotes kindness and compassion. The Lightning netball team are also heroes for my girl. Again, these women have an amazing work ethic and are beacons of our community. Billy Eilish refuses to wear next to nothing keeps the focus squarely on her music, standing out in a sea of young entertainers who all look and sound similar.

In a world where we expect kids to grow up pretty fast and near-nudity is becoming the norm, I will forever be thankful to Ms Dally-Watkins for her large part in teaching me it is vital to value yourself. And wear good eye shadow.

he image of nine-year-old Quaden Bayles leading the NRL’s Indigenous team onto the footy field on Saturday for the All Stars game captured hearts around the nation.

After a horror week of news, seeing the eyes of this little boy widen as he took in the thousands of fans cheering in his honour, brought on all sorts of feels. To see some good rise from the distress, gave us hope.

Quaden’s story of relentless bullying made headlines last week after his mother uploaded the heartbreaking video of her son sobbing uncontrollably. He begged to take his own life.

Do I agree with her choice to record this moment and share it with the world?

Not particularly. But as a mother, I can understand how this woman must have been at her wits’ end and felt she had no other option. She wasn’t receiving the support she and her son so clearly needed, and took the matter into her own hands, the only way she knew how.

The result was a global outpouring of love, and some much-need attention about the affects bullying can have on a child’s mental health.

Children are bullied every single day.

And the reality is that not all stories travel the path of Quaden’s, resulting in a funded trip to Disneyland.

According to 2018 McCrindle research, 2.3 million students nationally said they

had experienced bullying, with one in five experiencing it on a weekly basis.

Alarmingly, suicide is the number one killer of Australian teenagers.

Statistics indicate that anti-bullying seminars do have an impact in boosting a teen’s confidence in dealing with bullying.

Many schools are also taking action.

However, as parents are we doing enough? Are we spending enough time talking with our children about what constitutes bullying, and taking

Given it’s the start of the new school year, could we be gathering with other parents to hold frank discussions about how best to tackle the issue as a community? If we as parents are talking openly and honestly about bullying, we will set a good example for our children, and hopefully break down the associated fears of speaking out.

Bullying won’t be eradicated, but we can show our children as a community that it should not be tolerated.

MALENY RSL HOSTS MUSIC BUSHFIRE RELIEF THIS MARCH The upcoming Maleny Bushfire Relief Benefit Concert will raise money for the firies, affected communities, native animals and bushland rehabilitation.

The Maleny RSL is providing the hall, staging and lights for the event for free, as some of the Coast’s and Brisbane’s best musicians come together to sing with soul for a cause that is close to their hearts. For the past month, benefit organiser Linsey Pollak has been busy working behind the scenes with the performers and event volunteers, to bring the community an event to remember. “We are hoping to raise $10,000 that will go to the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade, the WWF Australia Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund and the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund,�

Mr Pollak says. “The bushfire relief ticket admission donation fee is $50 and benefit supporters have the option of choosing one of the three funds to support by putting their donation in one of the three boxes at the venue door on arrival.�

Musicians who are donating their time, include Andrea Kirwin (pictured), Hayden Hack, Mr Pollak, Lizzie O’Keefe and Louise King.

Ms Kirwin, a Nambour-based musician who will be kicking off the show, says as soon as Mr Pollak asked her to be involved, she immediately said yes. “I think as artists, we are community builders and connect people from different walks of life. I play a lot of charity events and after the fire season we’ve had, I’m glad I can give back through donating my time and talents.�

Ms Kirwin will also be performing alongside a performer she first met in 2008 at the Dreaming Festival, in Woodford. “I have also performed with Shenzo Gregorio as part of the Lord

It’s not the first time Ms Kirwin has performed at a bushfire fundraising event, as she donated her services at the Peregian Beach Hotel earlier in the month. “I’m sure everyone’s energy will lend itself to make the evening an unforgettable one,� she says.

There will also be a raffle on the night and all funds will be donated to Koala Rescue Queensland. One of the community volunteers has been making crocheted koalas, which are proving popular with the locals.

Food and drink will be available to purchase at the event, which promises to be a great night to get your loved ones together and meet new members of the community. There are no presale tickets so be sure to get your friends and family together to get in early. The event is at Maleny RSL, Bunya Street on Saturday, March 7 from 6.30pm. STEM SOARS AHEAD AT SUNNY COAST SCHOOLS Sunshine Coast students are immersing themselves in fascinating STEM projects that will keep them ahead of the game.

Pacific Lutheran College

STEM UNDERWATER DRONE PROJECT Year 9 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) students at Pacific Lutheran College have commenced work on their underwater drone unit as part of their project-based learning this year.

This semester, students will design and construct an underwater drone to rescue a doll from a body of water.

Students undertake all aspects of the construction themselves, including cutting materials, soldering and testing circuits. The testing and modification phase forms a big part of the project, allowing students to develop their problem-solving skills through collaboration and communication.

Throughout the project, students will also have the opportunity to work with engineers at Praesidium Global, providing them with deeper insight into the design and construction process. Pacific’s partnership with Praesidium also builds students’ understanding of the place and nature of innovative STEM thinking in industry from a global perspective.

The project was incorporated into Pacific’s STEM curriculum in 2018 and has continued to evolve, building on the experience of previous years. Last year, this project was also recognised at the Independent Schools Queensland Curriculum Innovation Ideas Exchange, where Pacific was one of 12 independent schools invited to present.

SPACE SCHOOL FOR CURIOUS YOUNG EXPLORERS Over the summer school holiday break, 17 curious students from Sunshine Coast Grammar School embarked on an opportunity of a lifetime, partnering with Actura and travelling to the United States to participate in Space Camp.

Students from Year 7–9 spent a week in Huntsville, Alabama at the US Rocket and Space Centre and another week based in Houston, Texas. In an engaging hands-on adventure, students learnt about the development of space-related technology and were led through several simulated missions where they worked together to overcome challenges and adversities.

Students had the chance to unleash their passion through immersive and exciting astronaut training. Built on the foundation of the Seven Survival Skills, the Space School program offered three key pillars of activities including enriched space and earth science activities, inspiring leadership development, and engaging personal development. Students had the opportunity to work in small groups to collaborate, trial newly developed skills, take a leadership role within these teams, meet astronauts and space engineers as well as hear some engaging and motivating talks by world-class presenters.

REAL-WORLD PROBLEM SOLVING

At Montessori International College, science, technology, engineering and mathematics are inherently integrated into the entire curriculum. Students experience real-world, hands-on opportunities to apply STEM concepts, from exploring the diversity of life in their 22-hectare natural environment to operating micro-economies that involve operating a cafe and running a farm to grow and cultivate food.

In the secondary college, students regularly engage with industrial partners to monitor waterways and the flora and fauna onsite, including gathering and processing real-world data. Students also initiate and deliver community improvement projects across the campus, from design work using CAD programs including computer modelling for stress, wear and aerodynamics, right through to final production.

Recent projects have included a solar-powered automated system for the school’s chicken coop, to designing a floating dock for the dam to create a quiet meditation spot. These problem-solving skills are essential for students as they move into Years 11 and 12, where they engage with real-world challenges as part of the International Baccalaureate Program.

Technology use flows through day-to-day life at MIC, with digital design packages used in technology classes, art and even mathematics as a way to bring learning to life, such as the design and printing of 3D geometry sculptures.

In junior primary, Code-A-Pillar activities are used to introduce concepts such as sequence, looping and coding structure, which extends into using Scratch visual coding and robotics using Sphero kits. In the secondary college, personal interest drives projects including game coding and design using various platforms and animation and engineering applications including virtual and augmented reality.

FOUR PROPERTY PILLARS STRONG The four pillars of Sunshine Coast property are looking healthy, according to the REIQ’s latest report. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

T

he Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has released its Queensland Market Monitor (QMM) report for the September quarter, highlighting some promising results for Coast property, including its four pillars: houses, land, units and rental returns. We talk to real estate experts to discuss the data and find out if now’s a good time to buy or sell on the Sunshine Coast.

Bryden Lang, residential director, Herron Todd White, says the four pillars overall are doing well.

“All four pillars are generally performing well on the Coast, although rental returns have started to ease slightly with the increasing values.”

REIQ’s Queensland Market Monitor (QMM) Your Suburb By Suburb Property Guide, December 2019 Issue, states that: The Sunshine Coast’s housing market appears to have responded positively to better finance conditions in the second half of this year.

Mr Lang agrees, adding: “With the market continuing to improve and interest rates at an all-time low, now’s a

good time to enter the property market.”

CEO of REIQ, Antonia Mercorella says it’s also the Coast’s pristine beaches and growing infrastructure that’s resulting in a strong property market.

“The Coast has several fundamentals that make buying in the region a good opportunity now. We have good fundamentals as well as historically low interest rates, making it appealing and far more affordable.”

Mr Lang also mentions several of the Coast’s large infrastructure projects, which he says are helping generate confidence in the region. “Significant infrastructure projects are resulting in good levels of interstate migration and demand for additional housing, so the pressure on the limited available stock should continue. This all points to a healthy residential property market through 2020.”

Ms Mercorella adds: “Local level projects providing regional economy and infrastructure investment also creates a strong economy and important employment opportunities – positive for the Coast’s growing population.”

With a number of positive reasons to live and buy on the Sunshine Coast, its property market is faring well, which REIQ’s QMM report indicates. It shows strong results across the pillars for the September quarter, starting with land sales, which revealed optimistic results.

And the good news didn’t stop there.

Statistics were also positive for the Coast’s median unit price, which grew by 3.1 per cent to $420,000 for the quarter.

“There has also been a big shift to the more permanent owner-occupier style units which is expected to continue with the ageing demographic and downsizers looking at these as a viable alternate with low maintenance,” Mr Lang says.

Rental markets had varying results over the quarter: the median weekly rent for a three-bed house is $455 (down); a two-bed flat, $375 (up); a three-bed townhouse, $440 (up). Gross rental yields for houses remained steady at 4.1 per cent as did units at 4.6 per cent.

The Coast is also providing healthy yields for investor, who are enjoying healthy yields of 4.1 per cent for houses and 4.6 per cent for units.

Right now I am strapping in and getting ready to ride a mountain in Canada on my snowboard. From top to bottom it is six kilometres of pure magic. Peak speed gets you up around 90 kilometres, which is about my limit before my pants change colour.

Normally, I am riding this first thing in the morning by myself… early bird gets the worm… or powder in this case!

Snap, back to the Coast. Noosa Festival of Surfing is on and it looks like a few sliders are around, so enjoy what you can. Now I am off to the hot tub with a cheeky Molson Canadian beer.
