A

t the risk of revealing my age, this year marks 20 years since I graduated high school. To be honest, it doesn’t seem all that long ago. However, the changes made to the school environment in those two decades is phenomenal.

Our school had two computer labs – airconditioned rooms with rows of PC-laden desks.

These labs were used for the students who studied typing and computer studies. STEM was something a tree grew.

My son began Prep a month ago and he already knows more about coding than I ever will.

We’re also told that by the end of the year, he and his classmates will be able to produce and present a PowerPoint presentation.

As for communication between the teachers and parents, in addition to a terrific face-to-face relationship, we are encouraged to use the Seesaw app. Multiple times a week, these committed teachers upload photos, updates and the week’s learning intentions to ensure parents are abreast of their child’s learning. The teachers take the time in the evenings and on weekends to message parents individually as well.

In this week’s edition, journalist Rachael Tickner explores the changing face of our education system and the impact technology is having on our children’s learning. From robotic clubs to iPads, it’s certainly an exciting time to be at school. Enjoy.

• February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. • Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer affecting women in Australia. • The risk of being diagnosed before age 85 is one in 85. • The five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is 45 per cent.

Jill Phillips is a retired GP who lives in Maleny with her husband Russell and dog Hatty. She has two sons and one granddaughter.

I

was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in November 2018. I had been feeling tired for about a year and then I began to have severe reflux, bloating and abdominal pain. I’d had irritable bowel disease in the past and my fatigue was put down to being post-menopausal.

My sister died of ovarian cancer aged 52. I am 61 and have been heavily screened (including regular ultrasound scans of pelvis) for ovarian cancer for 10 years and it was still missed. My genetic screening was thorough but it was negative, so I believed I was not at high risk.

When my symptoms became very bad, I insisted on an endoscopy and a CAT scan.

The CAT scan and CA 125 marker levels in my blood indicated I had ovarian cancer and I was informed it was terminal. It was horrendous to hear this. I happen to be an extremely positive person, so I decided ‘terminal’ didn’t mean anything.

My oncologist talked about palliative care, which concerned me because it indicated she thought I’d die in the next three to six months. I decided I had too much to live for. The month after my diagnosis, I began chemotherapy and then

My husband is also a medic, so we did some research ourselves and discovered PARP inhibitors. We asked the oncologist if I could be part of a drug trial and she found the ATHENA trial happening in Brisbane. I began the trial in August 2019 and since starting, my energy levels have improved and my post-treatment CAT scan has remained static.

I hope I continue to be able to withstand the drug and that it holds me exactly where I have been since the August scan last year. My quality of life is good and

I don’t have any pain. I walk my dog daily, I do my art, complete all my domestic tasks. I try to get out on my kayak once a week. We visit my granddaughter in Brisbane weekly and I have visitors stay regularly.

There is still a lot more research needed to discover better tests for earlier diagnosis.

This will secure better outcomes for us all, so I encourage everyone to get behind ovarian cancer fundraisers. In September 2019, I participated in Cancer Council Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers, along with my family and friends and we raised $3000. It was fun!

Women need to be aware ovarian cancer is a killer, as it presents so late and

we don’t have an effective screening tool yet. As women, we need to prioritise our health and insist when symptoms persist that investigations be done. During my journey I’ve discovered there is another marker apart from CA 125, which is HE4. It costs $50 and it may complement CA 125 in a clearer and earlier diagnosis.

All of 2019 was very tough but it was worth it, as I have my health back now. We went to the UK for Christmas then flew to Paris, which was on my bucket list. Next on my list is the Bay of Islands in New Zealand.

I also want to stay well for October, as my second son is getting married and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be at that wedding!

echnology in schools is shaping the way teachers teach and communicate with their students, parents and peers.

Technology is a major part of global business practices and many Coast schools are leveraging the benefits and convenience to better equip students for the future.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education says Queensland state schools are committed to working collaboratively with parents to ensure all young people are equipped with the skills needed for modern-day life and the jobs of the future.

“This includes the use and understanding of digital technologies.

Queensland state schools are preparing students for future careers of all types, especially those heavily technology focused areas such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through implementation of the Australian Curriculum.”

The most recent Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) found Australian schools were the third-biggest users of information and communications technology (ICT) of the participating Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

Kuluin mum, Brooke Bennett says her eldest son, Jackson, seven, is very familiar with devices now used at school.

“Jackson’s in Grade 3 and uses an iPad most days at school. He also uses an iPad

at home, and is familiar with how tablets work, and their functionalities and capabilities,” Ms Bennett says.

“I see technology as a positive thing, within reason of course. Technology assists children with learning and makes it easier for them to consume and remember the information being taught.”

And it’s not just students benefiting

“We have had to embrace this change, as it’s just the way the world is now… ” from technological driven devices, teachers are as well. From multimedia presentations through to computer simulations, technology is making teaching in the classroom more efficient.

A teacher who’s riding the technology wave is Caloundra’s Unity College’s Tiffany Di lanni. A respected teacher with over a decade at the college, Ms Di lanni knows first-hand how much technology is being incorporated into the education system.

“Things have changed considerably over the years. Even when I think back to when I was at school myself, and we had a ‘computer IT room,’ we had to visit as a class, to even access technology. These

days, students have technology at their fingertips all day long,” she says.

Ms Di lanni, who is currently on maternity leave with her own little scholar of the future, Nixon, says, “Technology has changed, so the way we teach was always going to have to adapt to keep up. The learning styles of our students have also changed; they are now extremely advanced in their use of technology, so we make use of this by incorporating its use heavily within our curriculum.

“We are a ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) school, as are most these days.

This differs between schools in regards to the type of device (eg, iPad/tablet, or laptop). Everything is done online now, from electronic roll marking to reporting.

“Email is used as the main communication tool between staff, parents and students. We have had to embrace this change, as it’s just the way the world is now.”

Ms Di lanni also says, as someone who doesn’t typically like change, at first, she struggled with the integration of technology into the curriculum. Her opinion on that soon changed as she sees the students’ work when using technology. “It benefits students in their learning and also allows them to make use of a medium they are incredibly familiar with and passionate about. Like anything in life, it also has its downfalls, like plagiarism, data backup and storage, shelf life of devices and the distractions that come with social media access. But myweeklypreview.com.au

President of the Design and Technology Teacher Association of Queensland (DATTA), Mark McMullin, says his organisation offers a range of professional development opportunities for Queensland teachers of design and technology, but following a recent survey, they identified these teachers are in short supply.

“We completed a national survey into the increasing shortage of technology teachers across Australia. The results are alarming and point to a growing crisis in Australian education, which will lead to future shortages in key industries such as

the rise in our local schools, and continually evolving, she adds: “I hope that these developments keep in mind the wellbeing of our younger generation and perhaps take further steps to ensure the safety of our children when using such technology. I definitely think more needs to be done to make the internet a safer place for all parties.

“I don’t know who ideally is responsible for this occurring, but issues like cyberbullying and trolling are problematic and as a result of these technological advancements, it is something we all need to be made aware of.”

They were discussing the coding and sensor requirements for the process of moving the conveyor belt, scanning and weighing, etc.”

Elliott, 13, and Laurence, 11, attend Chancellor State College and are always switched on to technology around them.

“Whether that be at the local shops, smart street lighting, Tesla cars on the road, remote controlled road work equipment,” she says.

“Laurence has presented to industry professionals, such as Unity Water and the Sunshine Coast Council, showcasing his skills from when he was a lead robot builder with his school team.”

It’s no coincidence they have some great teaching support behind them.

Engineering Lead Tech at Chancellor State College, Simon Richardson teamed up with Niamh O’Sullivan to co-found RoboCoast in 2017, a new technology education hub, that delivers training and competitions for teachers and students on the Coast.

Mr Richardson is also the coach for the secondary college teams, RoboKings, RoboMonarchs and RoboKnights and Ms O’Sullivan is the Digital Technologies Robotics Key Leader for Mountain Creek High School.

With their combined expertise in robotics, and RoboCoast’s ongoing growth, the regional hub has been awarded a five-year contract to roll out the RoboRAVE International Robotics Program, a US-based initiative that’s operating in 31 countries, including Australia. The RoboRAVE Australia International Open will be held this May 22–24, hosted at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC).

Three teams qualified for the international finalists in the USA, which was an Australian robotics record, right here on the Sunshine Coast.”

To succeed in robotics, Mr Richardson says, “What’s needed is a strong level of numeracy, literacy and an overwhelming serving of grit and resilience.”

Addressing these needs, the Department of Education spokesperson says: “The Schools of the Future STEM strategy delivers a range of opportunities for state school students, including the STEM Girl Power initiative, Queensland Coding Academy, Queensland Virtual STEM Academies and the Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in STEM Education.

“The Premier’s Coding Challenge provides students in Years 3 to 10 the opportunity to showcase their innovative digital solutions to help promote cybersecurity. Participation in this competition has grown 600 per cent to 762 students since 2017. Queensland has also been well represented at a national and international level in STEM competitions.”

LOCAL BUSKING BOYS SET FOR STARDOM

ou may have seen them busking around the Coast, two kids on guitars singing and playing their hearts out to raise money for the bushfire appeals. They are Frank and Louis Martin from Currimundi, two kids with hearts of gold and musical talent in spades.

Frank, 13 and Louis, 11 attend Pacific Lutheran College and love playing acoustic

rock and folk music. Louis sings while Frank plays harmonica and they both play guitar. They love Boy and Bear, David Bowie, Angus and Julia Stone and John Butler and hope to pursue careers in music.

For now, they’re rapidly building a fan base and have raised $3800, which they’re donating to the Rural Fire Brigades, WIRES and the Red Cross.

“We were motivated because we saw all the suffering people in New South Wales with the bushfires and we wanted to help them,” says Louis. “We thought it would be a nice deed to help the firies and all the suffering people.”

“We saw lots of other buskers were raising money so we thought it would be a good idea to try,” says Frank. “We went to Mooloolaba one night and we made $1500 in two or three hours.”

The brothers have since expanded their territory and now busk at Maroochydore, Caloundra and the Twilight Markets at Noosa, as well as Mooloolaba. They’ll be busking at the Noosa Festival of Surfing in March and have been invited to busk at the NightQuarter at Birtinya. They’re also getting booked for cafe gigs and appear to be well on the way to realising their dream of a career in music.

“We’ve been learning guitar since he was seven and I was six,” says Louis. “I also get taught by a singing teacher called Toni Zaffa. We’re hoping to become musicians when we’re older and we want to start a band and stuff.”

Ms Zaffa says she believes the duo has a big future in music ahead of them.

“Louis is the main singer and he doesn’t sound like anybody else I’ve heard. He has an incredible feel, a beautiful soulful feel. I can teach him any genre… He’s so unique – both of them are. They’re going to go through the roof.”

The boys’ mum Eva says she and her husband are happy to do the hard yards and drive them to their gigs. “It’s lovely to watch them play and perform. I just want them to do something they love and they seem to enjoy this a lot so far. There are some very generous people out there. It was amazing to us that strangers from the US and Europe found their posts and donated.”

The brothers post videos of their performances to their Facebook page and while they’ve so far been doing covers, they’re now writing their first song together.

“It’s about cool kids at school and how others are left out,” says Frank. “It’s acoustic folk. It would be awesome to play it at our own shows one day.”

The Refinery 2019 participants Following its successful launch in 2019, The Refinery creative incubator will return to the Sunshine Coast in 2020. The free eight-week program joins the dots between creativity and business as participants take part in an incubator program to refine, test and launch their creative ideas as a sustainable business.

Applications are now welcome from individuals and groups from across the creative sector including visual art, screen, design, architecture, publishing, literature, advertising, media, podcasting, game development, fashion, performing arts, music, heritage and artisan craft.

Delivering access to mentors and a network of inspiring industry leaders, the program provides participants with the

business skills, tools and connections to turn their idea into reality.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski says the inaugural program delivered beyond expectations, receiving almost 90 applications and attracting big-name mentors including Heidi Middleton. “In 2019, the program helped 17 start-ups to develop, refine and launch their creative ventures,” he says.

“Once again, The Refinery is set to feature a line-up of notable local and national creative leaders, with workshops, one-on-one mentoring and industry networking events.”

Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance president Dr Sue Davis says, “Following the recent bushfires we have witnessed the incredible power of artists and businesses banding together to raise funds, support recovery, inspire hope and make change.

With that in mind, The Refinery 2020 theme is Start Something That Matters and we’re inviting creatives to start something that matters to themselves, their place or the planet.”

Australian residents are invited to apply and shortlisted applicants will be required to attend a bootcamp on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, March 21 to assess their proposed business idea.

GALLERY UNVEILS 2020 EXHIBITION PROGRAM Caloundra Regional Gallery has announced its 2020 exhibition program.

There’s a focus on Indigenous Australian art, a celebration of internationally renowned ceramicist Johanna DeMaine, the prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize, an exploration into our idea of the urban landscape in Constructed Landscapes, plus a glimpse into the process of art in public spaces.

A celebratory program in August will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Caloundra Regional Gallery, where the history of the gallery will come alive through art and entertainment as well as an exhibition featuring favourites from the Sunshine Coast Art Collection.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski says the gallery’s diverse exhibition program offers an inspiring art experience for all.

“Since opening its doors in 2000, Caloundra Regional Gallery has grown to become a must-visit destination for local art lovers and visitors alike, and what a fitting year to celebrate the 20th anniversary milestone in 2020,” he says.

The gallery officially opened on August 11, 2000. Several sites across Caloundra were investigated, with the original library building in Felicity Park

This site on which the gallery now sits was owned by Maurice and Felicity Stiensen and their residence ‘Felicity Cottage’, built in the early 1940s, was located at 22 Omrah Avenue.

The exhibition program is enhanced by the gallery’s wide range of public programs and events for people of all ages and abilities – from Kid’s Art Attack and Toddler Wednesdays, to artist talks, workshops, the Mindful Art program for people living with dementia and their carers, and the ArtReach program that travels to residential care facilities.

NEW DOCO DEALS WITH HOW TO LIMIT SCREEN TIME Queensland Health is urging parents to tune into its new documentary, Square Eyes, in a bid to make future generations screen smart. Health and Wellbeing Queensland chief executive officer Robyn Littlewood, who appears in the documentary, says parents often underestimate the amount of time kids are on their devices — with obesity and poor sleep being significant risks. “As soon as they’re home from school, they might be on a screen — and they’re staying there.”

Excessive screen time also goes hand-inhand with mindless eating, which Dr Littlewood says can lead to obesity and other chronic health issues.

HATCHLINGS EVENT COLLECTS 596 KILOGRAMS OF LITTER FROM COAST BEACHES

NAMBOUR MUSIC SCENE HITS A HIGH NOTE The annual Clean Up for the Hatchlings event saw 635 community members clean up 596 kilograms of rubbish across 17 sites from Caloundra to Coolum. Event organiser Dr Simone Bosshard says while it’s about 400 kilograms less than the amount collected last year, she hopes it’s because people are becoming more proactive and responsible in how they dispose of their rubbish or recycling.

“We hope this is a sign that genuine behaviour-change around littering.” Which she adds is promising for the environment and turtle hatchlings. “This season already, we’ve seen eight clutches of turtle hatchlings emerge and make their way out to the ocean, and there are more to come over the next two to three months.

“When they are in their post-hatchling stage, at 10–40 centimetres, they float to the surface and eat everything around them, usually plankton and little jellyfish, but also, unfortunately, a lot of plastic.

“By cleaning up rubbish from our waterways and beaches, and reducing litter in general, we’re helping the survival rates of these hatchlings and other marine wildlife.”

Mooloolaba’s Eva Nicol-Rann, 10, is shaving her long, shiny locks on March 1 to help raise money for blood cancer. Eva is taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation, bravely opting for the whole shave and donating her hair for wigs. So far, she has raised $640 and is on a mission to exceed this amount. The Nambour CBD live music scene has been dancing to a new beat with the Sunshine Coast Council designating the town centre as a special entertainment precinct. The designation provides better protection for entertainment venues and offers clear and consistent guidelines for new developments. Venues are also exempt from the amplified music noise requirements of the Queensland Government’s liquor licensing laws, which are instead transferred to the council.

Sunshine Coast division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson says the planning scheme amendment aimed to nurture the live music industry by promoting a vibrant day and evening atmosphere.

The completion of the $8.18 million redevelopment of The Events Centre Caloundra was marked on February 14 with a colourful celebration of the venue’s almost four-decade history.

unshine Coast mummy bloggers Jenni Ferguson and Louise Thomsen have been getting stopped at the supermarket and Nippers since they were launched into the national spotlight as contestants on the 2020 season of My Kitchen Rules.

Having established a huge following with their Paging Fun Mums website, the pair applied for MKR hoping it would allow them to share their passion for creating fun things to do with kids. But unfortunately their time on the show came to an end this week in Tuesday’s sudden-death episode. “It has been a rollercoaster,� Mrs Thomsen says. “We were the first to cook, which was crazy. To have the twist of the new plot this season really threw us for a spin. We had no idea we’d be cooking against five teams that had already been in the competition, let alone teams that had won and teams that had placed second, as well as teams with their own restaurants. “From the get-go it was a real shock.

Our first cook, we were really proud of our entree and dessert, but we really stuffed up our main. We’re a few episodes in now and the drama is amplifying thanks to Sophia and Romel.� “It was quite difficult being first,� says Mrs Ferguson. “We like to rise above and

own the situation we’re in, which is what we did. The main didn’t do so well, which is probably to be expected, but we always have fun no matter what we do. There was a lot of drama at the table and certain people seemed to be placed there for that reason.�

Mrs Thomsen, who lives in Buderim, and Mrs Ferguson, who lives at Alexandra Headland, have 330,000 followers on their social media platforms and their Pinterest page gets five million unique visits a month. With such a strong following, the pair makes a full-time living out of sharing their love of craft and cooking for kids with the world. They both have two kids and met at antenatal class 12 years ago, launching the website as a way to document the fun things they were doing with their kids. “We really didn’t realise what we had under our belt,� says Mrs Ferguson. “We went on a blogging cruise and an agent was asking us how many visits we had and it was like a million. She said, ‘oh my gosh girls, you are sitting on a goldmine.’ That was a year after starting it. “A lot of places on the internet for parents can be quite full-on and negative and we wanted a happy, positive space where parents could come and see different ways they could have fun with their kids. I think that’s why it has

Mrs Thomsen adds, “It really is just about community for us. Our mother’s group, when we first met, was a real-life support for us. For us, a community of fun mums is like a big mother’s group. We can

support each other in a fun, uplifting way.”

The pair is now planning to run retreats for mums and daughters in their tween years, expecting the first one to take place on Fraser Island later this year.

So, with so much positivity and success in their lives, what prompted them to throw themselves into the cutthroat world of reality TV?

“The kids think it’s funny, but I don’t let them watch it anymore now the drama is coming in,” says Mrs Ferguson. “We didn’t realise we’d be sat at the table in front of people clearly there to cause drama. It’s really hard to be attacked on

your appearance, how you speak, your opinion – you could barely say anything without the claws coming out. There were some awful people. I did actually say at one point to Sophia, if she was okay with Australia seeing her behave that way, that says a lot about the kind of person she is.

“It was very difficult as a parent to be in that situation, knowing we teach our children not to be bullied,” says Mrs Thomsen.

“We were sitting at that table with that behaviour happening and trying to think, what would I want my son or daughter to do in that situation? There’s no escape, you’re stuck at this table with them for the whole evening. Every night we’d come in to sit at the table and we’d hope we weren’t sitting across from them.”

Having given it their best shot, they have no regrets and the messages of support they’ve received have made their stint on MKR worth it.

“It’s something Louise and I have wanted to do for years,” says Mrs Ferguson. “We like to step out of our comfort zone and we wanted to do something together we hadn’t done before.”

2019 NOVEL CORONAVIRUS – ANOTHER SARS?

C

oronaviruses are a group of viruses that can infect humans, causing degrees of respiratory illness, from a common cold to pneumonia, and can even be fatal in some instances. The 2003 SARS pandemic is an example of a coronavirus.

The 2019-nCoV or COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, had not been previously identified. It has spread more rapidly than SARS (which infected 8096 people), but appears less deadly, with mortality rates around two per cent compared with approximately 10 per cent with SARS. The experience of SARS has meant that this time, the response has been swifter and tougher:

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a public health emergency within two months of detecting the virus in humans. In the case of SARS, it took four months due to China taking longer to report the disease. A declaration from the WHO should see more coordinated global measures.

• Already, control measures are being implemented. China has suspended its wild animal trade, extended holidays, and put several cities containing around 45 million people under quarantine. Other countries have suspended flights to and from China, as well as entry of Chinese nationals. During SARS, significant action was not taken until after the WHO emergency declaration, and even after this quarantine measures were less widespread.

• China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, announced a 10bp cut to interest rates, injected around RMB1.7 trillion of liquidity into the banking system, and announced other support measures (including providing low-cost lending to certain sectors).

In theory, this should mean the outbreak can be brought under control sooner, although given the stricter control procedures and China’s increasing dominance in global markets, the nearterm economic impact could be more

evident than during SARS and may require further policy supports.

Primarily impacted is China, but mostly temporarily. The restrictions on consumer activity, especially during the important lunar New Year period, and the postponement of some industrial activity will create a negative shock in the first quarter of the year. However, a rebound in the second quarter should follow if the outbreak is contained.

Given China now represents 18 per cent of the global economy, compared with four per cent during SARS, there will be some spill-over to key trading partners including Australia. Broadly, it is estimated

the virus could take up to 0.5 percentage points off China’s GDP growth this year, and 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points off Australia and global GDP growth.

At the time of writing, the markets have taken the coronavirus outbreak in their stride but confidence will certainly be tested if the efforts to contain the virus fail and the economic impacts escalate.

Sami Muirhead struggles to stick to a routine and aspires to leading a more organised life enriched with simple pleasures.

Richard O’Leary says buying luxury goods doesn’t make us feel as happy as we’d expect – unless we feel entitled to them.

S

o the kids have been back at school a whole month and a routine is still eluding me. I am craving familiar days and patterns as I grow older, but our family takes the scattergun approach. When it comes to the weekends, we divide and conquer in a chaotic tidal wave of rushing to sport, doing the groceries, cleaning the house, going to parties, walking the dogs, trying to do homework with the kids and fitting in about a million other things. It drains the soul.

Life is busy, but life is also a gift isn’t it? So we keep on swimming (yes I am quoting Finding Nemo) and appreciate as much as we can. Our friends Nathan and Shannon are more organised than me.

For 20 years, they have gone to the same cafe at Kawana Shoppingworld on the same day, where they eat the same thing (they share pikelets with jam and cream and a cup of tea). This sounds like total bliss to me.

There is something magical in the routine of this simple pleasure. They started doing it when they were 20 years old and despite having busy lives and kids and careers, they still do it. I thought I would have all this extra time now that my youngest one has started Prep. In fact, I seem to have less time than ever before.

Research shows there is a direct link between anxiety and a lack of routine.

And by the way, I just may slap the next

person who says to me: “Oh, you must have so much more time now all the kids are at school.” No I do not actually. Please stop saying that to mums.

You know what else you should never say to a woman? “Are you pregnant?” A stranger in a shop asked me this last week. Do not ever ask a woman if she is pregnant until you actually can see the baby crowning!

Anyway back to routine. One of my wisest friends Kellie has life worked out and her motto is: “You need one thing every day you do at the same time that you look forward to and it will make your days happy. It might be as simple as a cup of coffee in your favourite cup or it might be speaking to your friend on the phone.”

Maybe Kellie’s theory is right. Reading to my kids at night as I clutch their little limbs makes me happy. I am reading a book called The Happiness Curve and it is based on the premise that adult happiness is based on a U curve. We hit middle age and we think, is this it? We question if there is more meaning to life, even if we have ticked off the big bucket list items, like having kids and a career.

Research shows in your fifties, you start to make more time to see friends and you care less about being competitive and achieving financial goals. Simple things make you happy. So this week, perhaps make time for pikelets and have extra jam and cream.

en Z is just so self-entitled. How often have you heard that statement in recent years? It’s nothing new, every generation has had to face the judgment and condescending attitudes from those who have gone before.

Gen Y complains about Gen Z, while Gen X pays out on Gen Y, and Baby Boomers ridicule Gen Xers – just as their parents had done to them.

Occasionally, you see the following generation call out the preceding one – “Okay Boomer!”, the term recently coined to put my parent’s generation in its place, a case in point.

But I have some bad news for all you Zs, Xs, Ys and Baby Boomers – you are all as self-entitled as each other.

Well, that’s according to a new study undertaken by the Boston College and Harvard Business School.

They weren’t researching entitlement per se – the focus of their study was on why we buy luxury non-essentials and what effect it has on us when we do.

Surprisingly, their results showed we feel bad when we buy expensive handbags, designer shoes or luxury watches. The reason is that we feel there is a giant chasm between what these luxe products represent and how we see ourselves.

For about two-thirds of us, we feel we are not worthy to own them and far from having a positive or neutral effect on us

when we buy these goods – there is actually a negative impact. Scientists have dubbed it the ‘imposter effect’.

So not only do we spend more money than we can afford on items we don’t need, we then feel bloody miserable about it.

But what about the other third of consumers? Well, they are the exception to the rule. They are people who feel entitled to these products. I bet they’re all filthy rich or born this century I hear you say. No. The self-entitled gene apparently

“I bet they’re all filthy rich or born this century…” crosses all class, cultural, income, gender and age categories. You either feel entitled or you don’t.

If you are one of these people who do feel entitled to the best of the best, you will get a pick-me-up out of buying Gucci sunglasses or a Hermès handbag. For the rest of us, and I’m only really talking about myself here, you are much better going to a garage sale, buying someone else’s luxury hand-me-down and saving your cash and self-esteem at the same time.

And remember when you call a Gen Z self-entitled – chances are your generation is just as bad.

BATTLE OF THE BULGE It’s that time of year when our screens and magazines are filled with ads for weight loss, but do boot camps and diet fads really lead to a happier retirement? WORDS: Angela Benstead.

W

hether it’s meal plans, gym memberships or the latest exercise gadget, people are looking to cash in on New Year’s resolutions to trim down.

For many of us who’ve reached a certain age, the kilos have crept up and lingered, stubbornly refusing to budge despite daily walks and fewer sweets.

The escalating number on the scales shouldn’t come as a surprise to us. Dr

Cam McDonald, a registered dietician and exercise physiologist who specialises in epigenetics, says, “Our metabolism naturally slows down after our mid-30s.

We also start losing muscle and bone tissue and have a propensity to gain more fat as a result.”

He says our metabolism generally slows down as our lives are at their busiest, compounding the challenge.

“We’re usually hitting the peak of our

professional career after 30. We start having kids and losing time and reprioritising things. By the time we hit 50 or 55 where potentially those things are less demanding, we’ve been out of action for 15 years and it feels like a much longer road to get back on track.”

For retirees who are working less and playing more, it’s tempting to ignore the tape measure and just have another glass of wine. Surely there’s a point when we can throw away the bikini and stop agonising over a few extra inches around the waist?

Aside from the well-documented health risks of being overweight, dietitian Rachel Moore says people coming to the practice have lots of motivating factors for shedding a few kilos, and none of them involves a swimsuit.

She leads a team of dieticians supporting people through bariatric surgery, a procedure that physically reduces the size of a person’s stomach to limit eating. “We see a lot of people who’ve reached mid-life and want to take control of their weight,” Ms Moore says.

“Often, they’re empty-nesters. They might be newly single and looking to change their lives in a radical way.”

Rachel says a lot of men want to stop snoring to get a better night’s sleep and often they don’t need to lose weight to see improvements.

“All they need to lose is a couple of centimetres off their neck,” she says.

“Maybe five kilos can make a difference.”

One woman was motivated by becoming a grandparent.

“Her daughter was pregnant with twins and had to go back to work full time,” Ms Moore says. “The woman was only about 10 to 15 kilograms overweight but she knew she had to lose it to be a help to her daughter.”

For other mid-life patients, the battle with weight is new and unexpected.

“Some women survive breast cancer, only to face life 20 kilos heavier thanks to steroids and hormone treatments,” Ms Moore says.

While some people are turning to surgery and other means to limit their food intake, it’s not only what we put in our mouths that makes a difference.

Exercise plays a critical role in physical and mental wellbeing, regardless of how heavy we are.

Mid-morning on a weekday at a gym, the usual crowd of young athletes has left the building. In their place, a rowdy gang of retirees in vibrant shorts and T-shirts is training under the watchful eyes of physiotherapist Zenna Leung and Patrick Daley, an exercise physiologist. This community fitness class is the brainchild of physiotherapist Dorothy Hawkins.

“Maintaining and building muscle strength and flexibility is really important to assist with and prevent injury, and is also a key factor in weight management,” she says. “But for various reasons, not everyone is comfortable in a standard gym setting.”

She introduced the class last year as an affordable group fitness option and is encouraged by its growing popularity.

Four regulars shared their stories over coffee after class, singing the praises of the small-group approach.

Di Oliver, a self-confessed gym-junkie who’s exercised all her life, appreciates the personalised treatment in a group setting.

While the trim 68-year-old doesn’t have a weight issue, she’s seen real improvement in mobility since she started.

“The trainers have seen me come in with significant pain in my hips and knees to now doing an exercise that they’ve structured especially for me. They can

Her golf game’s improved too, with one point knocked off her handicap.

Ms Oliver and partner Garrett Russell, 70, a retired TV and film producer, say their young trainers are respectful without being patronising.

“They don’t bark at us to ‘give me another 10!’,” Mr Russell says, “but they do push us to increase our weights if they think it’s too easy for us.”

Trish Petersen has been a gym regular for three years, motivated by painful bursitis in both hips to get stronger and lose weight. “I kept going because I wanted to travel and I wanted to do lots of walking,” she says.

“I was really in a lot of pain and I couldn’t lie on my side. Now it doesn’t worry me at all and I sleep well at night.

“There’s still inflammation but it doesn’t worry me because I’ve built up my glutes and my quads.”

The group agrees they enjoy the tiredness that comes from exertion.

“Sleeping is better when you’ve exercised,” Ms Oliver says, “and so is your diet. You exercise and so then you enjoy having a salad and fish or whatever, knowing that’s part of your fitness routine.”

So is the secret to weight loss and wellbeing as simple as eating less and moving more? Not according to Dr McDonald, who now runs the Australian arm of ph360, an online platform providing personalised wellness plans.

He says not everyone will respond to generic exercise recommendations. “Even though people are putting in the effort it’s actually not directed in a way that’s suited to their body,” he says.

His research in epigenetics suggests everyone is hardwired to respond to

various motivations differently. “For one person it might be tracking their knee range of motion by degrees whereas another person’s motivation might be hearing that another person did it before them, which fires them up to take on the challenge,” he says. “Someone else might need nurturing and just to have someone to believe and be there with them.”

He says personalisation is about learning what motivates people.

“It makes the conversation easier when talking about injuries or when people say they just can’t change their diet because their family won’t let them.”

Regardless of the approach taken, he says it’s never too late to tackle weight and wellness.

BACK TO REALITY I have reclaimed my life. It’s Facebook-free February.

Once, while waiting for a bus, train or friend, I might have looked at the sky thinking what a beautiful day it was, but I became a zombie, head down, reading nothing of any particular importance.

The realisation I was a social media junkie hit when a message popped up to tell me how much screen time I’d clocked up. This was followed up by a conversation with a friend who had dumped Facebook for a month and it had been exhilarating. In fact, she regained so much time and clear thinking that she had decided to remain clean and deleted Facebook entirely.

Looking back, I think my addiction was incremental, year on year, sinking ever lower into the depths of reading lots of things I really didn’t need to know – and some I shouldn’t know – losing myself in the world of the little screens.

For a while it was fear of missing out (FOMO), but then it just developed into a time-wasting habit. Like a junkie, I gradually became a committed user.

When Facebook began a decade or so back, it was still finding its way and we all smirked as our friends posted their latest thoughts – do we care that you put out the bin and cleaned your teeth this morning?

And from there it just got worse.

Humdrum posts, cat videos and amusing

memes evolved into advertising, groups formed to make a point that probably should never be given voice, and subjects that don’t belong in the public domain.

Then there are the holiday snaps. It’s nice to stay in touch, but when there are daily dozens of pictures taken of every panorama from every vantage point – and plates of food, cups of coffee – it’s as bad as those old slide nights when my uncle would turn up with projector and screen and click through the magnificent waterfalls and snow-capped mountains of his latest holiday in excruciating detail.

On top of all this, there is the invasion of technology into our private lives. You Google something or mention it in an email and the next minute ads for that something start filling the Facebook feed. And beware, for if you click on that ad, it could be a life sentence. Every time you open your device it will be there again. Every tap of your finger is being watched and monitored.

And to think we once feared that TV would become all-consuming.

What was I doing in the days before I was glued to a screen?

Well, I rang up friends for a chat, wrote letters, sent cards, kept a diary, did a crossword, read a book, watched TV and sometimes just did nothing at all.

For me, the printed word is hard to beat. It’s there, tangible, and you can choose what you want to read without some unknown being telling you want you should have. The choice is all yours. I have rediscovered the joy of holding a pen for the morning crossword, without a device in sight. It is freedom and can be highly recommended.

Nobody wants to admit to themselves that their parents have grown old and frail. But there are certain realities that must be faced if we are to keep our loved ones safe.

Here are some signs to watch out for which, if they are occurring more frequently, may point to mum or dad needing some extra help.

• Missed appointments • Mysterious new dents in the car • Appliances left on • An empty fridge • Poor personal hygiene or changes in personal standards.

Spotting one or more of these clues is not necessarily cause for alarm. But a series of unexplained changes over time might start to ring bells. Try and chat to your parents about getting some help around the house.

A breast screen, or screening mammogram, is an X-ray that can pick up small changes in the breast tissue, before they can be felt or noticed.

Like other X-rays, a breast screen uses a dose of radiation. This is kept as low as possible, while still allowing clear images of breast tissue on the X-ray.

At BreastScreen Queensland, each X-ray is viewed by two specially trained doctors to ensure a high quality service.

Radiation exists naturally in our environment, so we are exposed to low levels of background radiation all the time.

Research shows that the benefit of detecting cancer early far outweighs the very small risk of having an X-ray.

My goal in healthcare is to restore people’s quality of life. Patients often come in believing their best days are behind them just because they’ve been injured, which for most, is simply not the case.

Recently, I had the privilege of looking after 15-year-old Zaryn from Cooktown through a charitable organisation called Sporting Chance Foundation. The charity provides surgical management and rehabilitation for young Indigenous ‘rising star’ athletes in Australia.

Unfortunately, Zaryn had been suffering recurrent shoulder dislocations that were preventing him from playing rugby and, not surprisingly, he was very keen to get back onto the footy field.

After hearing about Zaryn’s case, the Foundation and St Vincent’s Private Hospital East Melbourne stepped in, sending Zaryn and his mum to Melbourne for shoulder surgery. My colleague, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Shane Blackmore, and I donated time to carry out the surgery while the hospital generously provided the surgical space and hospital care for Zaryn.

No matter where you come from, injury should not exclude you from enjoying the things you love.

Exercise has been established as an efficacious adjunct therapy for cancer management. At the Buderim Integrated Cancer Centre Gym exercise plays an important role in the treatment of, and recovery from, cancer.

Before treatment: Exercise before surgery can optimise baseline function, reduce the rate of complications and enhance recovery.

During chemotherapy treatment: Exercise can minimise the number and severity of side-effects. These may include loss of lean muscle mass, bone health, immune functions, sleep quality, depression, anxiety, pain, fatigue, nausea, lymphoedema and risk of cancer recurrence and mortality.

After treatment completion: Exercise can reduce the duration of the recovery period, reduce the risk of cancer returning or another primary cancer, as well as reduce risk of other chronic disease including obesity, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Recommendations: Exercise should be tailored to the individual’s abilities with specific adaptations for cancer type, treatment-related adverse effects, disease trajectory and current health status.

Euthanasia – we can live without it

The novel coronavirus

Simple changes can help prevent falls

Without making light of an extremely complex moral and ethical issue, the present position of the Queensland Parliament is that Queenslanders can live without euthanasia.

The government is yet to adopt any formal position – although the Premier has previously announced an inquiry into the possibility of legalising voluntary assisted dying.

The West Australian Parliament, on December 10, 2019 passed legislation to legalise voluntary assisted dying, making it the second state to do so, with the Victorian scheme commencing in June 2019.

Those in the ‘for’ camp typically cite that: (a) It provides autonomy and end-of-life options; and (b) It may reduce suffering.

Whilst the ‘against’ typically suggest: (a) Modern palliative care measures suffice; (b) Creating a ‘right’ to be killed is the start of the slippery slope and may lead to ‘involuntary’ euthanasia; (c) You can’t ensure all acts are truly voluntary. A right to die may become a ‘duty’ felt by vulnerable persons who are dependent on others and fear being a burden. Debate should not be rushed.

There is a lot of concern about the outbreak of the coronavirus, and rightly so, but we need to be sensible and not panic. As at February 11, Queensland had five confirmed cases – all members were on the same tour in China and are isolated in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

From February 1, national travel restrictions apply to Australia. This means travel from mainland China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau as of February) into Australia is limited to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and their immediate family members and legal guardians.

Contracting the virus requires a person to have more than 15 minutes face-to-face contact or more than two hours contact in an enclosed space with a confirmed case.

The virus can live on surfaces from hours to days, so wiping down surfaces with alcohol-based wipes can help protect.

While you may not always be able to prevent falling, there are ways to help reduce the risk.

There are many reasons for falls, so be sure to look at the whole picture. Here are some ways to help prevent falls around the home: 1. Bathroom: Wet surfaces (on the floor or counters) can be very dangerous.

To help, provide non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower, install grab rails and provide a shower seat. Replace the shower head with a hand-held nozzle.

2. Stairs: Clear the stairs. Whether it is a few dropped clothes or a grandchild’s toy, anything left on the stairs can become a tripping and falling hazard.

Differentiate between the stairs. Ageing eyes may not always be able to separate one step from the next. All flights of stairs should have handrails on both sides of the stairs.

3. Install better, brighter lighting.

Seniors cannot always see that well in a dark or shadowed room.

Assess the location of light switches as these may be out of reach or cumbersome.

How to live with less pain as you age

Menopause help may delay the inevitable

As you age, the ligaments and tendons that hold your joints together become stiff and leathery. At the same time, osteoarthritis can cause the cartilage in your joints to wear away. Both processes can lead to aching, soreness, and pain. Acupuncture and remedial massage are both effective, drug-free treatments for this type of pain.

Acupuncture is believed to work through neurohormonal pathways. Fine acupuncture needles stimulate the nerves at special points in the body to restore the flow of energy, assisting the body to repair itself naturally.

Remedial massage can stimulate the blood supply, make joints more mobile, and help to repair damaged tissues.

Hot flushes, insomnia, mood swings and migraines can be unbearable, though completely unnecessary. HRT may seem to be the only answer, though can you remain on HRT or bio-identical hormones for the rest of your life? Many women have been prescribed HRT for years, even decades beyond the expected end of menopause, perhaps unnecessarily prolonging the inevitable.

The symptoms of menopause are expected to affect a woman for only 18 months from onset to completion, yet we are treating the condition for up to 20 years or more.

It’s not as difficult as many expect to reduce and sometimes completely eradicate symptoms of menopause within as little as a month when the factors involved are addressed.

Hormones rely on cholesterol, adrenal health, specific gut bacteria balance, and a healthy liver. Addressing these systems at the same time can promote hormone production of natural oestrogen, not only resolving menopausal symptoms, but anti-ageing as well. The good news is that it’s quite simple to do, and can have a very big impact in a very short period of time.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING TO BUILD OR RENOVATE It’s a difficult decision and one that most homeowners will face – when you outgrow your home, is it best to renovate or start from scratch with a new build? The experts says there are pros and cons to both.

I

f you’re tossing up whether you should pick up sticks and move to a new estate or renovate your existing home, the decision isn’t one to take lightly. Each has its pros and cons, so we’ve sought the advice of Coast experts

to find out how new homes are faring against an existing dwelling, and if one option is better than another.

David Phillips, director, Total Creative Constructions says building from scratch may be less stressful – a plus for many

people. “When you purchase a house and land package the design, inclusions and price is fixed. These decisions can sometimes be a stressful process for people.”

Ryan Sullivan, director, Real Living Homes adds to this stating that a new build can also be a safer option with warranties and having the ability to create exactly what you want.

“There are warranties you don’t get in existing homes. You also have the freedom to tailor the house to suit your lifestyle rather than living with compromised solutions of the original build is a big factor for choosing a new build.”

Stuart Greensill of Herron Todd White, Maroochydore says new estates also help with demand, while providing greater options in terms of land size that rarely come available in established estates.

“Given the growth that the Coast is experiencing, we have to keep up with

housing demand by providing new land.

The majority of land is located a little way off the coast. If you want to buy a beachside block of land and build, then you are pretty restricted.

“Estates such as Harmony, Aura and Peregian Springs have been performing

But if your home is on a larger, ‘traditional’ sized block, Mr Sullivan says this may be a key deciding factor for staying put. “The closer you get to the beach or city centres, the less land there is and that drives people to make improvements to existing houses.

“Knocking down or renovating a site where there is less supply and more demand will mean a better investment in the longer term. Often older homes in existing estates have a larger plot of land, which may make choosing to stay and renovating the better choice,” Mr Sullivan explains.

Regardless of whether people are building or renovating, our experts are seeing similar trends regarding block size, configurations and functionality.

Mr Greensill says their data shows sales specifically of sub-300 square metres have emerged from almost nothing 10 years ago, to account for 26 per cent of all new allotment sales in 2018. “Sub-300 square-metre allotment sales have also contributed to sales of new allotments of less than 450 square metres growing to over 60 per cent of all new allotments sold during 2018. These changes are reflected by the average size of new vacant residential allotments sold

reducing from 769 square metres in 1998 to 455 square metres in 2018.”

Mr Phillips says with smaller sized blocks in new developments, they’re seeing more people build double storey dwellings: “So they can fit everything they want in the house. While clients who are building on acreage more often tend to build single story dwellings.”

Mr Sullivan says the most popular configuration for new builds is the same as it has been for probably the last 10 years or more. “Kitchen, living, dining in

an open-plan format with four bedrooms, including a separate master; and ideally a second living space.”

Mr King also adds, “Free-flowing and open-plan homes make spaces more enjoyable to live in, but also enhances energy-efficiencies – making use of natural breezes, better placement of windows, window size and much more thought is now put into lifestyle design features.”

SURF REPORT

While all roads led to Noosa with the hectic crowds over that last swell, a little whisper came through that a certain point break in Queensland that requires a bit of a walk to get to was breaking prefect at three foot for three days and no one was surfing it except a crew who made the effort and had the time.

Complete with walk arounds!

I would rather surf that any day than play the Noosa trap.

This weekend looks ho hum… but to be honest, I do not care as I am off snowboarding for a few weeks with a crew from Hawaii!

Nothing but pure carving at warp speed ahead!
