round one in five young people aged under 18 experience online bullying in any one year, while 83 per cent of students who bully others online also bully others in person.

Cyberbullying has become a national issue. It is a serious problem that demands the attention of parents, carers, educators and our political leaders. It is also a criminal issue – children from the age of 10 can be sent to a juvenile detention centre for cyberbullying.

“What we are trying to teach kids is hey, if what you are doing to that child is deemed as harassment, that is an unlawful act. If the parents or child decide to go to police, you could end up with a criminal charge against your name,’’ says Buderim cyberbullying campaigner Rachel Downie.

Of course, the consequences can be far more troubling – childhood depression, anxiety and even suicide. This is what Ms Downie wants to stop. As the founder of cyberbullying reporting system Stymie, Ms Downie has shared her vital message with more than 300,000 students in the past five years, and she isn’t stopping there.

This week, she speaks with writer Leigh Robshaw about the importance of working together to bring an end to the issue. It’s a story that every parent and caregiver needs to read.

WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING? Cyberbullying is defined as an aggressive, repeated, intentional act carried out on an individual using electronic forms and can have serious impacts on mental health.

On guard Rachel Downie is one of the many Australians tackling cyberbullying head on. Queensland’s Australian of the Year tells My Weekly Preview it’s the responsibility of parents and all young people to protect kids from this devastating trend. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

hen Rachel Downie was announced as Queensland’s Australian of the Year for 2020, she was flooded with messages of congratulations. The Buderim anti-bullying and suicide prevention educator was overwhelmed with kindness.

But one letter took her off guard. It came from someone who had bullied her at school.

The woman wrote: “You’ll probably remember me as being an unkind and hurtful person at school. Over the years I’ve realised the things I’ve done were harassment and bullying and were wrong.

My daughter has been bullied and the impact on our lives has been unimaginable.

Rachel, I know I can’t take it back. I’m so sorry. I have no idea how you faced school on those days.”

“When I was in year nine, this girl was a ringleader of a group who made my life a living hell,” says Ms Downie. “Not one person stood up for me. But I fixed it with kindness.

Every time they were revolting to me, I was nice to them, which eventuated in them leaving me alone. When they said I was f***ing ugly and called me a ‘downie dog’, I used to say to them, ‘I wish I was as cool as you, but I’m not’. When they said, ‘when you come to school tomorrow, we’re going to bash you’, I said, ‘does someone hit you?’.

I had a fair bit of family trauma and I recognised she was a hurt person. Hurt people, hurt people.

“I cried a lot,” she adds. “My home life was bad as well and I had to use all my resilience to manage my home life. If I’d

in Australia in 2018. In 2017, 180 people aged under 19 died by suicide and 24 of those deaths were children younger than 14.

In April last year, a Queensland father spoke out about the effects of bullying after he saved his 12-year-old son from a suicide attempt. The father, who remained anonymous, admitted he had failed to read the signs and wanted his family’s ordeal to serve as a warning to others.

“It’s devastating,” says Ms Downie.

“Schools are struggling. Mention any social media platform, like Snapchat or TikTok and they can’t even put into words how complicated it has made their job.

“We’ve never had this experience where we’re having a relationship through instant sent words. We are letting kids communicate and form relationships in a space that they need to be emotionally intelligent and they need to be able to process consequence.

Boys’ and girls’ brains are ready to take on emotion and the development intricacies of consequences by the age of 21 to 25. So essentially, “It appears cyberwe’re letting kids into a bystanders go through grown-up world and letting a complex series of them manage that with emotional processing, minimal parental supervision including sadness and and we wonder why we’re self-awareness, as well struggling. On a school front, as hate and empathy” we’re dealing with it when it has already created shame and done damage. And it has a massive effect, not just in dealing with one student, but dealing with an entire year level and sometimes an Dr Larisa entire school.”

Ms Downie has been a teacher for 26 years, a profession she pursued because she wanted to help young people flourish. But when a student in her community took his life, her life took a drastically different turn.

She felt compelled to help and created Stymie, an anonymous online reporting system for use in schools internationally.

Now, she travels the country talking to young people about the devastating effects of bullying – and in particular, cyberbullying.

She has spoken to more than 300,000 students in the past five years, having visited 83 schools in 2019 and 121 in 2018.

She is devastated that cyberbullying has become such a major problem that young people are taking their own lives at an alarming rate. According data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, suicide was the leading cause of death among people aged 15 and 44

Cyberbullying behaviour might include: • abusive texts and emails • hurtful messages, images or videos • imitating others online • excluding others online • humiliating others online • spreading nasty online gossip and chat • creating fake accounts to trick someone or humiliate them.

Stymie, the website Ms Downie created, allows students to anonymously report incidences of cyberbullying. The platform encourages bystanders to step in and do the right thing and stand up for their peers.

It has led to real change – including prosecution of students found to be engaging in cyberbullying – and Ms Downie being named the 2020 Queenslander of the Year.

“Parents are shocked when I tell them their child is legally responsible for everything they do from the age of 10,” says Ms Downie.

Telecommunication offences are the same throughout Australia and are governed by the Criminal Code Act. Section 474.17 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 states that using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend is punishable and carries a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment.

Children from the age of 10 can be sent to a juvenile detention centre for cyberbullying. If the eSafety Commissioner finds an instance of cyberbullying to be serious enough, it will refer the perpetrator to the police.

“What we are trying to teach kids is hey, if what you are doing to that child is deemed as harassment, that is an unlawful act. If the parents or child decide to go to police, you could end up with a criminal charge against your name. Good luck applying for a part-time job. You won’t be able to get your own mobile phone contract or internet contract. It is absolutely going to come back and bite them in the future. At the heart of Stymie is an appeal to the social conscience of bystanders – those who are seeing cyberbullying taking place and while they may not want to ‘rat’ on their friends, they could help save a life.

In addition, brain science is now showing it’s not just victims of cyberbullying that are impacted, but bystanders as well.

In December, Dr Larisa McLoughlin from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) published a world-first study in the respected journal Human Brain Mapping that looked at how the brain responds to cyberbullying. A USC Postdoctoral Research Fellow specialising in youth mental health, she studied the brains of 32 participants between the ages of 18 and 25 using advanced MRI at the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute and found the brain is affected even by witnessing cyberbullying occurring to someone else.

“The brain responds to social pain, for example being excluded online, in the same way as it does to physical pain,” says Dr McLoughlin.

“It appears cyber-bystanders go through a complex series of emotional processing, including sadness and self-awareness, as well as hate and empathy,” she says. “This indicates that the negative impacts of cyberbullying reach a far wider audience than just the cyberbullying victim.”

Dr McLoughlin also found that females have a greater response in the brain region that plays a key role in the processing of empathy.

“Females may be more empathetic cyber-bystanders than males, or more able to regulate their emotions,” she says.

Dr McLoughlin says the findings

also aid better understanding of the behaviours of those who defend online abuse, and those who do not.

“Online bystanders play a much more complicated role than those who witness bullying in person,” she says. “They not only have the power to contribute to bullying others by forwarding cyberbullying posts, they can be with the cyberbully when the post is made, with the cyber-victim when it is received, or witness the sharing and forwarding of bullying posts.”

Ms Downie says her school talks are aimed at encouraging students to be kinder people.

“All too often we keep blaming the social media platform and blaming the devices for the behaviours. Granted, those devices allow that behaviour to be perpetrated in a way we’ve never experienced. Yes, the devices need to be monitored until maturity, but these behaviours have always existed.

“What I like to leave kids with after every workshop is to be the kind of person who leaves a mark, not a scar. You don’t have to like that person you are seeing who is being bullied, isolated, dehumanised, but they are a human being and you have a duty to help them and if you don’t, there is a cost – and it’s a human cost.”

Get legal advice. If you are being cyberbullied, there are things you can do to protect yourself. In serious cases you might be able to take legal action against the person. Youth Law Australia offers free legal advice. Talk to a friend, parent or trusted adult or report the bullying to the police or the eSafety Commissioner. It is important to collect evidence, for example, screenshots, posts and emails. Visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website for guidelines on how to collect evidence.

Take steps to stay safe online.

There are steps you can take to stay safe online and to stop people contacting or bullying you, for example by blocking or unfriending people who upset you and keeping your privacy settings private.

If you know someone who is being cyberbullied or have seen cyberbullying, it is important you don’t join in, forward or share material or comment on anything. This could get you into trouble, as well as making things worse for the person being bullied. It is best if you leave any conversations or group chats if people are being nasty about someone.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Rachel Downie says parents need to be the gatekeepers of their children’s online lives. “Parents say ‘everyone’s on Snapchat and if we don’t let her on Snapchat she’ll be left out’. We’re letting kids run the show. The other comment we receive from parents is the reason my child got cyberbullied is because I don’t understand how it works.

“In terms of protecting kids against any kind of online harm is, your knowledge equals their safety.”

Ms Downie warns parents against confiscating phones as a knee-jerk reaction to cyberbullying, saying it isolates the child. “You need to go in as an educated and informed parent who has a really great sense of balance around who they’re engaging with and what they’re engaging with. As they get older, you hope you’ll be in that land with them less and less because you’ve taught them some good cyberwellness habits growing up.

“Parents are the ones with the most leverage with the kids, but the least investment in ensuring that the kids are operating in a humane way. One of the things I worry about is parents are subliminally encouraged into thinking, well she’s in her bedroom, she’s safe isn’t she?”

Ms Downie advises parents to ensure their children are using maximum levels of privacy on their devices and only interacting with people they know. “Before you let your kids go online, you need to know they know how to make healthy relationships. You need to arm them with a script in terms of being a bystander or a target of harmful actions.”

Ms Downie says it’s crucial for parents to talk to their children where the promise if something happens to them on the internet, they can tell their parents about it. It’s imperative parents stay calm, don’t cause a scene and don’t retaliate. “If your child has been cyberbullied you need to be calm, collect all the facts you can and report it to the platform. If it’s relevant, report it to the school.

“One hundred per cent of the time, when kids have been the targets of harm or the perpetrators of harm, the parents had no idea it was happening until it had escalated to a point that was serious.”

Upgrade works set to improve traffic flow along Walan Street between Venning Street and Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba are starting this month. The council’s highly anticipated $7.5-million upgrade of Walan Street to four traffic lanes is part of the multi-stage Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade (MTCU). Stage 1b of the upgrade is expected to start this month and be completed in late 2020 – weather and construction conditions permitting. Stage 1a was completed in October 2019 and involved extending Naroo Court through to Muraban Street, including the construction of a new roundabout.

Situated on an eight-hectare site, the future Prep to Year 12 school is being designed to accommodate 1500 students and around 150 teaching and non-teaching staff jobs on completion.

The building facilities will be split into several stages with the construction of stage one planned to commence in 2022.

FUNDING BOOST TO MANAGE FUTURE DISASTERS A million-dollar Commonwealth Government grant to assist with Sunshine Coast disaster planning and resilience efforts has been announced, with the Sunshine Coast Council one of 42 councils to receive the payment.

A region-wide working group comprised of Sunshine Coast Council and relevant state agencies involved in local bushfire response and recovery operations will develop a program of works with the funds. Mayor Mark Jamieson says recent unprecedented bushfires both locally and interstate had reinforced the need for our region to continue with its efforts to adapt and be resilient to the impacts of a changing climate. “Our council recognises climate change as one of four drivers of our Environment and Liveability Strategy, given its potential to impact on the health of our environment, the lifestyles we lead, and the resilience of our community,” Mayor Jamieson says. “This funding will be used to take direct action through projects that identify risks, and to provide information and advice to the community to help prepare for events such as bushfires. Council is continuing to work to provide information and education to the community on how best to prepare for the impacts of an ever changing climate, with information and advice on preparing for disaster events, a key part of the process.”

$1K FINES FOR USING PHONE WHILE DRIVING From February 1, penalties have increased around the state for residents caught using their mobile phone while driving. The fine has increased from $400 and three demerit points to $1000 and four demerit points.

This has been done to deter people from the dangerous behaviour of driving and speaking or texting on the phone. Simply touching your phone is considered illegal in the state of Queensland. A driver’s response time while texting on a phone is comparable to that of a driver with a blood alcohol reading of between 0.07 and 0.10.

The increased penalties mean that some license holders, like learners and P-platers, could lose their licence from just one offence.

Off the back of being recognised as Queensland’s Live Event of the Year, the Caloundra Music Festival (CMF) has been announced as a nominee in the 2020 Queensland Music Awards, under the Festival of the Year people’s choice category. Voting has recently taken place with results to be known soon. The Caloundra event has been in the running for the prestigious industry award title for the past two years.

The Caloundra Music Festival takes place over the October long weekend and in 2019 the festival welcomed more than 32,500 guests and generated $4.4 million for the local economy.

The Seedpod Pilot is presented by Sunshine Coast Council’s Horizon Festival and Creative Spaces program and it will be delivered by renowned live arts organisation, Punctum.

LEND A HAND FOR THE HATCHLINGS As another rehabilitated turtle is returned to the ocean, the Sunshine Coast community is invited to join the upcoming clean-up.

S

EA LIFE Sunshine Coast has released another rehabilitated hawksbill sea turtle at Mooloolaba Beach and will do its bit to encourage the community to get behind the Sunshine Coast Council’s Clean Up for the Hatchlings event on Saturday, February 8.

Marmalade the turtle was discovered in Stumers Creek in October suffering from floating syndrome. With plenty of love and care, she was nursed back to health weighing a hefty 5.3 kilograms at the time of her release.

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast aquarist Laura Kippax says Marmalade’s story is a reminder of the threats facing local marine life and will hopefully encourage locals to take part in the annual clean-up event, which is supported by Reef Check and Unitywater, and aims to remind the community about the importance of litter-free beaches.

“Plastic pollution has a devastating effect on marine creatures. It is particularly detrimental to turtles as they mistake plastic for food, which results in stomach blockages, starvation and poisoning,’’ she says “Picking up rubbish left at local beaches and waterways is a simple and effective way for people to make a difference. We also want to encourage people to reduce, reuse and

recycle so rubbish doesn’t end up in our oceans in the first place.”

Around 15,000 tonnes of litter is removed from our region’s waterways by Sunshine Coast Council staff and community volunteers each year. That’s equivalent to the weight of six elephants.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay is a strong advocate of keeping our region clean to provide healthy and safe space for our marine and wildlife. “Please do the responsible thing and dispose of your landfill

waste and recyclables into the appropriate bins,’’ she says.

Cr McKay urges the community to make use of Sunshine Coast Council waste outlets, including the 3300 public bins across the region.

“These bins include general waste collection as well as special bins for recycling, cigarette butts, fishing lines and more.

“We know that cigarette butts, fast food packaging and microplastics, including balloons, are some of the worst culprits, so

please remember to put your rubbish in the bin, or you could face some heavy penalties.

“And for those looking to do more to help keep our region clean, join us Saturday, February 8 for the seventh annual Clean Up for the Hatchlings event at which we’ll clean up beaches and waterways across the region and then meet up for a barbecue and rubbish sorting.”

The beach clean-up will take place at multiple locations from Coolum to Caloundra between 6am and 7.30am. Following the beach clean-up, volunteers can meet at La Balsa Park to weigh and sort debris, listen to guest speakers, enjoy a free barbecue and take part in a prize draw.

All of the collected litter information will be passed onto the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database to help encourage further awareness discussions.

IT PAYS TO BE PROACTIVE A University of the Sunshine Coast Hospital initiative is helping those in the community manage their type 2 diabetes. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

F

or many Coast residents, living with type 2 diabetes is part of their daily lives. Being proactive and creating a strong support system are the key messages for people with type 2 diabetes that’s coming out of an upcoming workshop at the University of the Sunshine Coast Hospital.

Sue Hanna was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago and agrees that being proactive, and having the support of friends, family and medical professionals are key.

“Knowing my type 2 diabetes can be largely managed through maintaining a healthy weight, ensuring a nutritious diet and engaging in regular physical activity makes me feel relieved. Surrounding myself with friends, activities and keeping socially busy. Also seeing ways to further educate myself is important,” Ms Hanna says.

When she was first diagnosed with diabetes, Ms Hanna attended the local Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Type 2 Diabetes and Me workshop.

The free group workshop provides information on type 2 diabetes self-management, prevention awareness, healthy lifestyle behaviours and further links to community support.

“I am blessed that I feel well and healthy and I can still make good decisions,” she says. “The hardest thing about my diagnosis has been to accept that I have type 2 diabetes, manage it as best as I can and just move on with life.”

Ms Hanna says she found the workshop so beneficial to moving towards this acceptance. “Learning that I had so much power to manage my own condition and being reassured that I was doing what I needed to do gave me confidence.”

Kerry Roach from the University of the Sunshine Coast Hospital To ensure that her mind is fresh with all of the health sector recommended guidelines and tips and hints for best living with type 2 diabetes, Ms Hanna says she will be attending the course again this year and is looking forward to meeting others in the community who are living with the disease.

University of the Sunshine Coast Hospital health promotions officer Kerry Roach says there will be a total of 12 workshops for the year being hosted by the Sunshine Coast healthcare community. Workshops will be held at Gympie Community Health Centre, Caloundra Health Services and Maroochydore Health Hub. “The workshops provide information on type 2 diabetes self-management, prevention awareness to reduce the risk of

further complications, healthy lifestyle behaviours, (including good nutrition and healthy eating behaviours, engaging in physical activity, emotional wellbeing) and links to further support in the community,” Ms Roach says.

“Beyond learning and being provided with information, people experience a sense of motivation and encouragement from the workshop towards managing their healthy lifestyle behaviours, which is a key focus of diabetes self-management.

The workshops are also an opportunity to network with other people living with the same condition.”

If a participant attends the workshop and feels they would like further support to manage their diabetes we are able to refer them to a range of services. We always advocate for participants to build a good relationship with their GP, ensure they are on a Chronic Disease Management Plan and have their regular tests done. Participants receive information during the workshop on accessing rebates to allied health clinicians (for example, dietitians, podiatrists and diabetes educators). We are also able to refer a participant to the Queensland Health Coach program, which is a free telephone support program for people with type 2 diabetes.”

The Type 2 Diabetes and Me workshops are delivered regularly across the Sunshine Coast and are open to anyone diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Family or carers are also most welcome to attend.

The road ahead Autonomous vehicles are coming, and it’s Gemma Read’s job to understand what that means for all road users. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

utonomous vehicles (AVs) are being touted as the answer to our road safety problems, but how safe will pedestrians and other road users be when they are introduced to our roads in greater numbers? This is the dilemma faced by University of Sunshine Coast (USC) researcher Dr Gemma Read.

An estimated 1.3 million people are killed and almost 50 million more injured through

road crashes each year. Consequently, billions of dollars are being spent on trialling AVs to hopefully usher in a new era of road safety.

However, comparatively little attention is being given to studying how humans will interact with a growing AI fleet on the roads.

Dr Read works at USC’s Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems. She’s fascinated with human behaviour around roads and cars and it will be her job to advise

stakeholders and government on what they can expect once AVs become more prevalent.

“We’re about halfway through a three-year research program at the moment,” she says.

“We’ve been doing some theoretical modelling and simulations and one of the models we’ve created looks at the transition period as people learn about the risk adversity of autonomous vehicles. Pedestrians might step out and autonomous vehicles might just stop for them. The idea is over time, as we have more autonomous vehicles on the road and more people have interactions where they learn these cars will stop for them, they begin to take less care for their own safety.

“The autonomous vehicles will not hit these people. But if there are human drivers on the road and the pedestrian steps out in front of the human driver and it doesn’t stop, it could lead to new types of crashes we wouldn’t have seen before AVs.” Dr Read has been studying human factors in road safety situations for 15 years, having completed her PhD thesis on pedestrian behaviour at railway level crossings. “I looked at why people ended up in collisions with trains, which were often fatal,” she says. “My research suggested people didn’t necessarily see it as a risky environment. In Melbourne there are a lot of crossings. Some people would take extra care and other people would just see it as an extension of the footpath.”

It’s this human behaviour in relation to transport safety and how crashes and fatalities can be prevented that fascinates Dr Read.

“I’m really interested in the pedestrian or cyclist and how they respond. I also find it interesting to think about whether we will be fully autonomous. There’s a section of society who enjoy driving, people with classic cars, who I don’t think would be that keen to give up driving as an activity, unless the government mandates it. It might be possible to have a mix of traffic and if that becomes a problem, there would be certain streets where

you could only have an autonomous vehicle, perhaps on the freeway.”

Dr Read is presenting her research at a University of the Sunshine Coast symposium on February 10, which will look at the latest research on the safety risks associated with robots and artificial intelligence, then heading off to the UK to present at a conference in April. As well as presenting at conferences, she supervises PhD students and advises government and stakeholders such as RACQ. She’s excited about an upcoming project that will look at how we control the risks associated with human-like AI agents – that is, how do we stop robots taking over the world and killing us all. It’s heady stuff, and it’s difficult to switch off from as she walks her dog around Caloundra’s cruisy streets.

“I’m really interested in the pedestrian or cyclist and how they respond” and we were coming up to a zebra crossing near Happy Valley,” she says. “My dog turned around to sniff something at the same time as a car started to slow down for us. I turned straight around to the car to wave them through and stood back from the crossing. I thought, what would an autonomous car think? Would it be able to interpret that event or would it stop and wait?

“Through my research, I’d love to be able to give some recommendations to government agencies and vehicle manufacturers about how they might be able to address some of the potential risks that could happen… It’s cutting-edge stuff and it’s going to affect all of us.”

WHERE TO FOR AUSTRALIAN BANK SHARES?

A

ustralian banks form the core of many investors’ portfolios, favoured as they have been for their high dividends over many years. Given the sector’s importance to the local market, we thought it may be useful to provide our sector outlook for 2020.

In short, we see 2020 as another challenging year for the retail and commercial banks, with earnings likely to remain under pressure and upside catalysts difficult to identify. On a positive note, there is less uncertainty on capital than a year ago, and regulatory risks are better understood after recent legal actions and provisions.

Furthermore, bank valuations at

current share prices look supportive against a backdrop of an expensive broader market.

Our key preference in the sector remains National Australia Bank (NAB, Accumulate) which, in our view, has been oversold and offers upside from current prices. Macquarie Group (MQG, Accumulate) also looks attractive as it offers a ‘defensive’ place to shelter from the pressures facing the major commercial banks, although it is no longer cheap. Our least-preferred bank is Commonwealth Bank (CBA, Hold), which is trading on a 17x price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple (a circa 40 per cent premium to its peers).

ANZ (ANZ, Hold) and Westpac (WBC, Hold) both look fairly valued to us at the present time. We retain our Lighten rating on Bendigo Bank (BEN), although we upgrade Bank of Queensland (BOQ) to Hold from Lighten given the recent underperformance of its share price.

WE SEE THE KEY THEMES AS FOLLOWS: • Top-line pressures in FY20 – We remain downbeat on top-line prospects of the major banks, expecting revenue to be flat to down two per cent, due to: 1) subdued system lending growth; 2) mortgagemarket share loss to Macquarie and

second-tier lenders; 3) margin pressures from lower interest rates and mortgage competition; and 4) further declines in non-interest income. We thus forecast that all major banks will see their expenses rise more than revenue in fiscal 2020.

• Dividends – We see some risk of further dividend cuts for the major banks, particularly for Westpac, although this is not our base case. This situation was helped by the watering down of Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s capital rules in December. We view the greatest risk to dividends being higher-than-expected

margin pressure and any significant additional one-off costs, for example, for remediation and/or litigation. Outside the big four, we do forecast dividend cuts for both Bank of Queensland, in the first half of fiscal 2020, and Bendigo Bank, in the second half of fiscal 2020.

Australian-based scientists have discovered an explosion in space where a dying ‘vampire’ star is feeding on a planet in an event which may provide answers to questions about the origins of life and Earth’s destiny.

Australian National University researchers found a white dwarf – the dense remains of a star, which our sun will be in billions of years – gorging on a brown dwarf companion which is 10 times smaller.

Astronomer Ryan Ridden-Harper unexpectedly found the supernova event while sifting through archived data from the Kepler space telescope, which was launched by NASA in 2009 to find

earth-sized planets and retired in 2018.

Mr Ridden-Harper had written a program to look at the Kepler data “using peripheral vision for stuff that was missed” according to his supervisor, ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker.

“It is almost reminiscent of what would happen if the sun and Jupiter in five billion years collided,” Dr Tucker told AAP. “Our sun, in five billion years, will grow and turn into red giant that puffs out and starts to swallow Mercury, Venus and Earth.”

The research adds to knowledge about the average lifetimes of stars by observing them in old age, and how they perish.

MUSICAL MOMENTS

Sami Muirhead is moving up in the world, having been appointed class coordinator for her son’s Prep class – someone hand her a clipboard.

Richard O’Leary reminisces about the albums that saw him through significant periods of his life and one that he’ll never forget.

W

hile Harry and Megs may have been stripped of their royal HRH titles, I cannot help but brag that I have been bestowed a new title. Yes. It is true. I have a whole lot of new power and prestige attached to my name. I am in fact the co-class coordinator of Prep Go. I know.

You are impressed.

You see, I have never been the class coordinator or the coordinator of any group because I am a really disorganised person. I am a good loyal follower, not really a leader. I do not pay attention to details that well and I have never created a spreadsheet in my life. Forget religion and political opinions: whether you love or loathe a spreadsheet is the true test of what kind of person you are.

I am that friend that texts you the night before the swimming carnival at school to ask if a) the carnival is on; b) do we need to take lunch or can we please please buy food at the tuckshop; c) do we have to actually get in the pool because I have not shaved my legs for four months.

So when I was head hunted (yes baby, read it and weep) to be the class coordinator by the teacher of my youngest child’s Prep class, I felt mixed emotions.

Terrified. Proud. Excited. A tad sick. I mean, these mums and dads need a rock solid role model to lead them to social catch-ups and to ensure beautiful Ms O’Brien gets more than a rubbish coffee cup come her

birthday and Christmas time.

So I did what any sensible girl would do and I begged my friends to share the role with me. One friend replied with two succinct words that were: ‘Hell no!’ But Candice Collins replied in a split second with a succinct message saying she would LOVE to be class coordinator with me. So in that unexpected moment, I rose from being a humble mum to standing on a cliff about to climb to extraordinary heights in life.

My family history books are being rewritten. I took on the title of co-class coordinator with Candice Collins (with a name like that, she needs to write a book).

My title has more C’s than Coco Chanel. A word of warning to all parents on the Coast who are not class coordinators. Do not whinge. Do not bitch. Embrace we mums who are volunteering our time to try and make everyone’s life easier. Don’t sneer at the coffee venue for the morning catch-up and don’t dare criticise the lack of organised plays for kids.

It can be lonely at the top. Day one of duty saw Ms O’Brien ask us to collate the parent’s details in the class. Candice Collins asked for a clipboard. I stood back in awe. If you ever want to look important and impressive in life, you need a clipboard.

Candice worked that room like a queen with her clipboard. I was not allowed to touch the clipboard, which did make me a little sad, but greatness isn’t achieved overnight.

y sister-in-law’s birthday is January 26 and for decades she has been joined by family and friends to listen to the countdown of Triple J’s Hottest 100.

These days it may fall a day either side of her actual birthday, after the station changed its programming as a statement on holding Australia Day on that date.

But the tradition continues.

I have no such musical rituals, but I do have albums that mark different stages of my life.

U2’s Rattle and Hum was played on repeat in my last year of school, The Pixies’ Doolittle provided the musical accompaniment to my uni years, while The White Stripes’ Elephant was the soundtrack to the final months of my stay in Ireland.

When I hear those albums today, the memories come rushing back – the good, the bad, but never the indifferent.

Although it’s a mix tape that brings back the most vivid moment of my twenties – a tour of East Africa in an old army truck painted bright red.

Coincidentally, it was a Triple J Hottest 100 album – the 1995 edition – which featured a picture of a soft serve ice-cream on the front and a long list of sweet tunes on the inside.

I don’t know whether it was luck, fate, or just one of those quirky things that can’t be explained, but I was the only person to bring any type of music on the trip, so we

played that tape across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire.

Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye was even more haunting under the stars after a day spent in the Serengeti, the coupling of Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue for Where the Wild Roses Grow seemed even stranger on the side of a track in the middle of nowhere while we tried to repair a punctured tyre, while Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise was just weird while scooting across the African savannah.

There were also some tougher times – have I told you that I had malaria while in Africa? You must be the only person I haven’t.

But inevitably when I think of the trip, I picture that big red truck cruising through the desert, kicking up dust and the dozen or so passengers singing at the top of their voices Technohead’s classic party tune, I Wanna Be A Hippy.

We did – and for that month, we were.

Sleeping with the fishes on the reef For an up close and personal way to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef, you can’t go past this room with a unique view. WORDS: Aine Fox, AAP

A

shoal of tiny, electric blue chromis suddenly burst from the depths of the sea. There are hundreds of them and they’re darting in all directions, performing a dance just for me. This midnight fish disco is being screened across four giant glass windows as I lie in bed, watching in awe.

Watching this spectacular show outside my room at one of the world’s seven natural wonders makes me feel like a child on Christmas Eve. I’m staying at Reefsuites, Australia’s first underwater accommodation on the Great Barrier Reef.

Just a few hours earlier, our boat pulled up alongside the Reefworld pontoon on Hardy Reef, around 70 kilometre off the north Queensland coast. I couldn’t wait to spend a little over a day immersing myself in the mesmerising sights on offer.

Many tourists to Australia opt to visit the reef – to snorkel, scuba dive or take a cruise in a glass-bottomed boat. But what would it be like to spend the night out here? Four metres underwater, sleeping among the fish?

The idea of being surrounded by water and unable to open a window sounds fairly claustrophobic so I was pleasantly surprised to find the two rooms to be anything but – measuring roughly 5.5 by five metres. Each includes a spacious ensuite, also complete with a glass wall so that even during a shower you can observe the underwater sights.

Down here under the ocean’s surface, luxury doesn’t feel compromised. The double bed is comfortable, there are white bathrobes awaiting me and there is lots of shelf space along the windows. There is no wardrobe, but for a one-night stay during which I plan to

spend most of my time in swimwear, that doesn’t pose a problem.

A multitude of different fish types swim up to the window throughout the night, probably attracted to a small blue UV light outside the room, which the company assures me has been developed to ensure the lowest possible impact on marine life.

In the early hours, around a dozen giant trevally appear for a late-night snack of baitfish. As the sunlight begins to stream through the water shortly after 5am, a whole new show begins, as yellow-tailed fusiliers and Dory-like surgeonfish appear to greet me.

Just when I think things can’t get any more exciting, a giant sea turtle meanders slowly across the window, its calm demeanour an amusing contrast to my frantic attempts to quickly grab my phone to capture the moment. I see another a few hours later during a morning snorkel safari, which is easily the highlight of the stay.

There is no doubt the reef faces threats, not least from climate change. But our guide Anna insists the part she’s showing us is fairly healthy, despite my initial concerns the cream colour of the coral is the result of bleaching.

I worry too that my very presence is a disturbance to the sea life, but she tells me visitors are needed in order to gain a greater understanding of the reef and learn how to protect it for future generations.

“I think when I take people out here and they see how beautiful the reef is they want to

look after it,” she says. “They think ‘I want my kids to see this’. I want to make wise decisions around my use of plastic, for example.

It’s with a broad smile that I wave goodbye as the boat leaves the pontoon for land a few hours later. We leave that night’s guests sunbathing on giant bean bags, relaxing in the shade of the upper deck day beds, or taking another dip in the water. As the sun sets, and with a wine in hand, I know they’ll be lapping up a unique and luxurious experience that the lack of phone reception forces them to enjoy in its entirety.

On the pontoon the night before, we enjoyed a tasty banquet of steak, fresh prawns and salads, with cheesecakes and brownies to follow. Then while the top deck guests settled in for a night under the stars in their glamping day beds, I retired downstairs to my underwater world of wonder.

It was the best sleepless night I’d ever had.

The Sunshine Coast Dessert Festival is on again, and it’s bigger than ever before, with a cherry on top. On February 15 at Aussie World there’ll be more variety, the tastiest and sweetest dessert flavours to try, as well as the Sunshine Coast Collective Markets that are tipped to be a must-see for locals and tourists alike. COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE OUTLOOK STRONG With interest rates remaining low, self-funded retirees and other investors are increasingly looking towards commercial property on the Sunshine Coast as they seek more solid returns. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

T

hings are looking good for the Sunshine Coast’s commercial marketplace. It is experiencing strong growth and record sales, which according to local industry experts, is set to continue.

We spoke to key industry leaders on their recent results and what they expect of the Coast’s commercial sector for 2020.

Rem Rafter, managing director of CBRE, says when it comes to the commercial sector, there is an acute lack of supply in

investment properties on the Sunshine Coast. “This is forcing yields down further.

Any investment property up to $10 million, which is realistically priced, i.e. a 6.5 per cent to seven per cent yield, is readily saleable. We think this trend will continue throughout 2020,” he says.

In terms of growth forecasts, Mr Rafter says the central and northern Sunshine Coast are attracting the most interest.

And in terms of record sales in the commercial sector in recent years, Nick Dowling, managing director of Colliers International, reports they have seen a number of large transactions. “There are a lot of records being broken in recent times. Last year, the largest industrial deal recorded on the Coast ($13 million) was transacted, but that is going to be eclipsed this year with the sale of the new Toll Transport facility nearing the $20-million mark,” he says.

Mr Rafter adds to these noteworthy sales figures, with several in Hastings Street at Noosa at sub – five per cent. “Noosa’s 1–55 Hastings Street sold for $5.06 million on a 5.23 per cent return.

Chris McKillop, director of Herron Todd White, agrees with Mr Rafter that the Coast has experienced some marquee sales during 2019 in tourist retail strips. “Hastings Street is leading the market, with yields now below 5 per cent for well-located holdings with strong lease covenants in place.”

Mr Dowling of Colliers International says he suspects 2020 will: “See yield records broken for premium assets. They are getting so tightly held that the only way buyers will be able to attain stock is by offering more money.”

With business owners wanting to secure a commercial property to add to their portfolio, Mr Rafter says, “Most self-funded retirees are looking to pull their money away from fixed interest investments and into a small investment commercial property and the main price bracket here on the Coast, is $3–$5 million.”

And while it all seems fairly positive, Mr McKillop says there is still some uncertainty to be mindful of. “It’s more difficult to predict the year ahead for 2020, than for any other over the past 10 years on the Sunshine Coast.”

He believes the main key factors for this include uncertainty around environmental impacts, overall slow economic conditions with softening recent retail sales, wage

growth and business/consumer confidence levels with a number of high-profile business closures over the past 12 months.

Mr McKillop says that macroeconomic conditions and how things such as Brexit, US elections and any India or China slowdown may also hit the Australian economy. “An historic low interest rate environment and the uncertainty around local elections, are

other key factors which may play a part in the corporate sector consumer confidence.”

Mr McKillop also says that despite these potential factors, the underlying market continues to generally improve, or at worst, hold steady across the commercial markets on the Sunshine Coast. “A strong factor behind this, is that it’s the strong local population growth that’s helping keep the local businesses going, during non-busy tourist periods.”

Mr McKillop also adds that increased tourism figures are adding to the overall positive outlook.

The commitment by Sunshine Coast Council around the Placemaking Mooloolaba Master Plan and also the ARIA development, will also bring the focus back to the area.

“While there has been some increased turnover of retail tenants along Mooloolaba Esplanade in recent years, the strong retail and dining precinct recreated at the Wharf, along with some improved foreshore areas at the beach, will help to bring tourist and local numbers back to the area, which in turn should improve overall retail outlooks,” Mr McKillop says.

“It appears there is enough uncertainty, even in our little corner of the world, to keep markets in check. Low interest rates appear to be here to stay for a while and investors will continue to seek improving returns, though the underlying fundamentals and
