ike many locals, my love affair with this beautiful place began as a child visiting on family holidays. Each year, we would travel down from North Queensland and stay at Alexandra Headland, and those precious memories have stayed with me throughout my life.

There is just something about the Sunshine Coast. To me, it has always felt fresh, clean, safe, inviting and relaxing. Even with all the infrastructure development we’ve seen of late, it has retained its simple charm – although now we have a slightly more cosmopolitan atmosphere, with world-class restaurants, fabulous cafes and stress-free shopping to go along with our superb beaches, waterways and hinterland villages and forests.

ABOVE BOARD Where on the Sunshine Coast do you live? I have been a resident of the Sunshine Coast for 30 years.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Winning the Australia Masters Surfing title in 2012 and representing Australia the following year at the World Masters event in Ecuador.

First car? A HG Holden Premier, which I drove three times a week from Raglan to Rockhampton for boxing training. It cost a fortune to run but selling it is still one of my greatest regrets.

What are you reading at the moment and what’s great about it? I have just started reading The Last Explorer

by Simon Nasht about explorer Hubert Wilkins.

However, my all-time favourite book is The Wreck of the Batavia & Prosper by Simon Leys, a fascinating true story of a ship wreck on the West Australia coast.

If your life was a book, what would the title be? It would have to be Hurdles In Life Are For Jumping, Jump As High As You Can. What are you watching right now and why do you love it? I have just finished watching The Vanishing, about the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers on the Flannan Isles off Scotland.

Your greatest regret? The passing of my mother, and her not being able to witness my children growing up.

Best day in your life? Obviously it was getting married, in case my wife is reading this. Witnessing the birth of both our children was a life-changing moment, as life took on a whole new meaning.

You are happiest when? When all my family all sit down together and get to enjoy each other’s company.

Favourite song and why? The Hoodoo Gurus’ 1000 Miles Away, as they are a great Australian band and the song represents how hard life can be.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? If I was to tell my 18-year-old self anything, it would be to travel more prior to starting a business.

If you could have dinner with any three people, alive or dead, who would it be? My mother and Mother Teresa, as she devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute. It is something close to my heart as I had the privilege of assisting the homeless as a past team leader for three years with Rosie’s – Friends on the Street. Also, Robert De Niro as he is one of my all-time favourite actors.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I recently enjoyed a game of indoor cricket. I enjoy keeping fit by regularly going to boxing training, Bikram yoga and surfing when the waves are up.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would spend it on an around the world surf trip, help my children and extended family and donate a portion to charity.

Best advice you’ve been given? Happy wife, happy life (never a truer saying).

Tea or coffee and how do you have it? I have a mocha in the morning and enjoy the occasional black tea.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Moffat headland. I enjoy the beautiful scenic views to Point Cartwright and wonderful beach side cafes.

NRL or AFL? As a Victorian I love the AFL, however, I watch more NRL these days.

10 Things You Need To Know Before You Buy A Mattress You don’t buy a new bed every day. So you want to get it right.

Especially when you can easily spend $1,000, $2,000, and even $5,000 or more at a department or specialty bedding store (that is, if you don’t know better).

With so many different brands, different prices, and so-called discounts, it can be very confusing to know which mattress to choose. Here are 10 things you need to know before you buy a new mattress.

ONE: Same Mattress, Different Name Have you wondered why no two store sells the same mattress?

Although they look similar, the name at one department store is different to another, which is different to the chain speciality bedding stores.

The truth is, most mattresses in Australia are made by 3 companies. But, to make it diffi cult for you to compare mattresses (and prices) from one store to another, the manufacturer puts a different label on the mattress depending on which store is selling it.

So, the only difference between the $1,000 mattress you are looking at in one store, and the $1,500 mattress in another store, may be the label.

does not affect the feel. But it will make a big difference to how long your mattress will last. Density is what costs money. So before you buy a mattress, be sure to ask about the density of the foams inside.

The fi rst layer (on top of the springs) is usually the lowest density (20-25kg/m2 is usually fi ne for this layer). But many manufacturers continue to use low density (20kg/m2 or lower) for the top comfort layers. While you won’t notice this when you fi rst feel your new mattress, it will become obvious as the foam breaks down and you end up sleeping in a hollow (sometimes as quickly as just a few months).

FIVE: Specialty Foam Memory foam is a term used to describe foams that have a slow ‘bounce’. In other words, once de-pressed, they take a few seconds to regain their original shape. Gel foam is a term used to describe foam that is infused with a special gel substance. Both memory and gel foams feel similar to touch.

But because some people fi nd memory foams hot to sleep on (due to the fact you tend to sink into the foam more), the addition of gel particles encourages air fl ow and a cooler sleeping surface. Although used as a marketing gimmick by many manufacturers, we do see some benefi t in using gel infused memory foam if you tend to feel hot when you sleep.

TWO: Springs Apart from straight foam and straight latex mat-tresses (which are not very common), all mattresses contain springs.

Some have Bonnell Springs (hour glass shaped springs held between a wire hoop at the top and bottom) or Pocket Springs (individual springs that are independently wrapped in a thin layer of fabric).

No matter what fancy names manufacturers give their springs, or what quantity of springs or zones their mattresses have, they are essentially the same. In fact, most springs are made by one manufacturer in China and shipped in compressed form to mattress companies all around the world including Australia.

Pocket Spring mattresses tend to cost a little more than Bonnell Spring mattresses but offer a genuine advantage in terms of less partner disturbance.

THREE: Edge Support In order to maintain support right to the edges, an extra piece of wire can be connected to the top and bottom hoops of a Bonnell Spring mattresses and a strong foam box can be added to a Pocket Spring Mattress.

Edge supports add genuine benefi t because they allow you to sleep or sit right on the edge of the bed without the side collapsing.

Edge supports should add around $100 to the price of a Bonnell Spring mattress and around $200 to the price of a Pocket Spring mattress depending if the support goes all the way around or if it is just added to the sides.

FOUR: Foam The type of foam used in a mattress will not only affect its feel, it will signifi cantly affect the longevity of the mattress.

Foams are measured in two ways. Firstly there is the feel – hard or soft. Then there is the density – high or low. The feel is what makes one mattress plush and another fi rm. The density is what makes one foam last longer than another.

You can get a soft mattress in low or high density. Density

SIX: Latex Like foam, not all latex is the same. Genuine latex is highly elastic and will last for many years. Synthetic and hybrid latex becomes brittle over time.

SEVEN: Pillow Top The term pillow top refers to the extra comfort layers usually only on one side of the mattress. This provides an extra soft sleeping surface for those who like a plush feel. Once again, the most important thing is what is inside the pillow top – namely, the density of foam. A low density foam may feel luxurious at fi rst, but as it breaks down you may feel like you are sleeping in a hollow.

Eight: Non-Flip Mattresses In some ways, this is another industry gimmick. The fact that most people don’t like to fl ip their mattress each month has lead manufacturers to say things like ‘non-fl ip technology’.

What this really means is that the mattress only has comfort layers on one side. So in a way, this has enabled manufacturers to save money on manufacturing while charging more. A mattress that can be fl ipped will generally last twice as long as a single side mattress (provided you do actually fl ip it).

NINE: Plush Top Some people like the look and feel of the ‘cloud-like’ comfort layers incorporated into the quilting of some mattresses.

The problem is, this layer usually fl attens quickly. Some salespeople say, “Your mattress will settle and mould to your body shape over time.” The truth is, the fl uffy quilting is simply getting fl at. We advise against plush quilting because if you like the plush feel, you will soon be disappointed as the quilting fl attens. If you do like a particularly soft surface layer, we recommend inserting a thin layer of high density memory foam in the quilting. It feels amazing and will not fl atten.

TEN: Are Expensive Mattresses Worth It? As you now know, the internal components of most mattresses are pretty much the same. And the most important part is the comfort layers (i.e. the density / quality of the foam). But no matter what fancy names are given to a mattress or it’s components – including terms relating to the type or number or springs – if you’re paying $5,000 for a mattress, we think you are being ripped off.

The name Eudlo is of Aboriginal origin and means ‘freshwater eel’. Cattlemen and timbergetters came to the area from the 1860s, but land was not made available for agricultural selection until the 1880s. The first selector was James Steele in 1887. It brought closer settlement to the whole district, and facilitated the transport of passengers, timber, fruit and produce. A sawmill was built at Eudlo and large quantities of timber from the Blackall Range and surrounding forests were either treated at the mill or railed to other centres. The timber industry was the means of livelihood for the early settlers. Eudlo State School was opened in 1897.

he Sunshine Coast is a jewel of the southeast Queensland region, showcasing vast stretches of spectacular beaches and boasting an inviting coastal vibe.

With the list of things to see and do long and extensive, we’ve selected 10 top locations visitors and locals alike can add to their must-do lists.

In no particular order, we start with Mooloolaba, featuring kilometres of beach with cream-coloured sand that links Maroochydore to the river mouth. Toilets are generally not something to brag about, but its famous Loo With a View certainly has one spectacular vista. The esplanade, packed with cafes, restaurants and speciality shops, also makes Mooloolaba one of the Coast’s more bustling hotspots.

Caloundra is next on our list. What was once a quieter town has really come to life over the years, transitioning into an equally bustling, family-friendly hub. Home to a number of beaches and passages, Caloundra’s waterways cater to people wanting to swim, surf, SUP and soak up the sum, and with many of its beaches dog-friendly, even the pooch can splash about.

If it’s a green, hilly experience you’re after, the Coast’s hinterland is for you. Dotted with quaint towns including Maleny and Montville, you’ll be sure to find somewhere to enjoy a good old-fashioned pub meal or decadent high tea. Then burn off those calories with any one of the area’s stunning walking tracks.

If it’s a surf experience you’re after, then Maroochydore has your name on it. Pack the surfboard and head to Maroochydore Beach.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, pick from a variety of food offerings from fish and chips, to juice and salad bars, delis, tapas and fine dining.

Also a great spot for surfing (and whale spotting in the cooler months), Coolum is also coming of age. Often overshadowed by more popular Coast destinations, Coolum really is a must-see location. Work up a sweat hiking up Mount Coolum, cycle along

Next on our list and home to the Coast’s longest stretch of beach is Kawana. From surf, rock pools or calm water, you’ll find it here.

Point Cartwright lighthouse boasts a stunning view back to Mooloolaba and straight out to sea. Depending on the season, spot all manner of sea life while enjoying a picnic with produce bought locally at the Kawana Waters Artisans & Farmers Market.

The Coast’s very own little food bowl, the Glass House Mountains area makes a perfect day trip. Dotted with fruit shops selling local produce, whet your appetite and work up a

its boardwalk or grab a bite to eat at the local surf club.

Eumundi is up next and you can’t go past its colourful and lively markets. Packed with artisans selling their wares and trinkets, fresh produce and yummy delights, it’s certainly a fun day out. And no trip to Eumundi is complete without a stop off to The Ginger Factory or a visit to a strawberry farm to pick your own.

No Coast story is complete without the Big Pineapple at Nambour, our next must-see destination. Home to Butterfly Hill and several lush parks, picnic areas and swings for the kids, it makes for a fun family-friendly day out.

As the saying goes, last but certainly not least is Buderim – an oasis among the trees.

Its elevated position provides expansive Coast vistas, while tree-lined streets and manicured gardens provide something for the eyes at every turn. Its main street offers charming secondhand shops, coffee carts and shacks, and cafes for a drink and sweet treat.

And with so many attractions on offer, it’s no wonder locals and visitors alike are living it up on the Sunshine Coast. A recent article

by Visit Sunshine Coast highlights data showing the region achieved record tourism expenditure in the region in the year to September 2019.

The latest National Visitor Survey (NVS) by Tourism Research Australia released in January showed 3.97 million domestic visitors travelled to the Sunshine Coast to the year ending September 2019, generating record expenditure of $2.6 billion, a rise of 12.5 per cent.

The International Visitor Survey showed international overnight visitor expenditure grew by 14 per cent to $284.3 million, exceeding the Australian average international expenditure growth rate of five per cent, with 319,000 overseas visitors coming to the Sunshine Coast in the year to September 2019.

Commenting on the NVS results, Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the figures reflect the benefits of increased, and enhanced, airline services to Sunshine Coast Airport, as well as the opening of Sunshine Coast Convention Centre. myweeklypreview.com.au

“The rise in domestic visitor numbers has been building over the past three years, and also reflects the greater understanding and appreciation of the destination. In particular, the promotion of the region’s diversity – such as its evolving food and arts culture – is reaping dividends,” he says.

Events also play a very important part in attracting visitors to the region.

“The Sunshine Coast offers a diverse range of experiences, and events are a crucial part of that mix. To put into context the value of events to the region, they generate in excess of $70 million in growth to the Sunshine Coast economy annually,’ Mr Latchford says.

“The Major Events Board will continue to seek out appropriate new event opportunities that complement the region and provide a good return on investment. These events will range from sport to culture, food, music, arts, business and unique events.

“Business events is another very important market for the Sunshine Coast and is growing at a rapid rate. Business events play a significant role in delivering mid-week and off-peak visitation to again help combat any seasonality.”

And it’s not just events attracting tourists in their thousands, it’s also the Coast’s natural beauty, world-class amenities and unique offerings.

Mr Latchford says, “From our sandy white beaches to the lush subtropical hinterland, the Sunshine Coast offers a truly unique experience. Our natural landscape is really

He says ease of accessibility to the Sunshine Coast has helped drive our interstate visitors, with people choosing the region for a relaxing break. “We offer a diverse range of experience for visitors, from beachside culture to farm-gate tours, health and wellness experiences, whether it be relaxing in one of our award-winning spas or getting out in nature with a hike through one of our national parks, exhilarating events and immersive encounters.”

And while it’s easy to get lost in the serenity of green rolling hills or sandy beaches, Mr Latchford says the strong tourism numbers and dollars are a result of a combined and strategic approach of key Sunshine Coast and government efforts.

“Visit Sunshine Coast works very closely with Tourism and Events Queensland both domestically and internationally. Our significant upcoming New Zealand campaign to extend Air New Zealand’s direct seasonal service between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast is a joint partnership between Visit Sunshine Coast, Air New Zealand, Tourism

and Events Queensland, Sunshine Coast Airport and Tourism Noosa.

“The extension of this service to six months of the year is expected to bring an additional 3000 visitors and inject $11 million into the local economy over a three-year period,” Mr Latchford explains.

He says Tourism Australia is another important partner and plays a significant role in creating awareness “of our country, our state and our region”.

“Tourism Australia partnered with Visit Sunshine Coast and Australia Zoo in Los Angeles in 2018, 2019 and will again in 2020 to support the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner and one-week of marketing activities to promote the Sunshine Coast to the American market, of which we have experienced significant growth.”

As Visit Sunshine Coast continues to market the region in key domestic and international markets, Mr Latchford says it will also continue to strive to grow new markets, and in particular markets that will deliver a higher yield. “We will also continue to grow our developing international markets, which is important for reducing the dependency on the domestic market and assists to combat seasonality.”

And while it’s not yet known what impact the national bushfire crisis may have on Sunshine Coast tourism, Mr Latchford says they are developing a significant domestic marketing campaign to minimise fall-out. He says the campaign will be promoted until Easter “to ensure the Sunshine Coast tourism industry performs as well as is possible in challenging circumstances and any potential fall-out is minimised”.

“Anecdotal reports suggest the Sunshine Coast was at near to full capacity over the current summer holiday period, with some operators reporting an increase in numbers on the year before.”

He concludes with additional findings: “Anecdotal reports also suggest the summer period has so far been strong and this is expected to continue until the end of the Australia Day long weekend, at which point we expect the market to soften, which is customary.”

NAMBOUR LIVE MUSIC SCENE SET TO TAKE OFF The Nambour live music scene will be dancing to a new beat after Sunshine Coast Council designated the area a special entertainment precinct. The designation will help provide better protection for entertainment venues and clear and consistent guidelines for new developments. Entertainment venues within special entertainment precincts are exempt from the amplified music noise requirements of the Queensland Government’s liquor licensing laws. The regulation responsibilities for amplified music noise are transferred to council.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson says the planning scheme amendment aims to nurture the live music industry by promoting a vibrant atmosphere in selected precincts, like Nambour.

“I have always been right behind Nambour becoming a special entertainment precinct,” Cr Rogerson says. “An initiative like this has the potential to breathe life into Nambour – making it a real drawcard.”

Under the State Government’s Free TAFE initiative, grade 12 graduates who enrol in a high-priority qualification within 12 months of leaving school are now eligible to receive a free course, enabling eligible school leavers the opportunity to pursue their dreams, without incurring any fees.

University of Queensland researchers are working around the clock to develop a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus in less than six months.

The researchers have been tasked with rushing a vaccine into existence, using rapid-response technology that’s proven effective against other viruses in lab conditions. The team hopes to have a safe and effective vaccine available for worldwide distribution within six months. Sunshine Coast eating disorders campaigner Mark Forbes won Citizen of the Year at the 2020 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards last week. Mr Forbes and his wife Gayle founded endED four years ago and have spearheaded Australia’s first live-in eating disorder residential facility in the Mooloolah Valley, endED Butterfly House. The Sunshine Coast Australia Day of the Year award for Young Citizen of the Year has gone to Ella Woodborne, who founded the Grammar Green Team. The Senior Citizen of the Year award went to Mark Skinner, who has been chairman of The Board Meeting surf charity since its formation in 2004. Emeritus Professor Jennifer Radbourne won the Creative award for her work in promoting the Sunshine Coast’s arts and creative sector, Ten Little Pieces founder Alison Foley won the Environment and Sustainability award, while Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) won the award for Community Group or Organisation. LOCAL CLUBS EXCEL AT QLD SURF CONTEST Sunshine Coast clubs have dominated this year’s Queensland Board Riding Championships, making the most of the local surf conditions to take out the titles at the podium. The championships were recently held over two days at Alexandra Headland where more than 150 lifesavers hit the waves and showcased their surfing skills on both long and short boards. Noosa Heads finished the competition on 102 points to secure top honours, ahead of Alexandra Headland (92 points) and Coolum Beach (45 points). Meanwhile, Maroochydore and Kawana Waters rounded out the top five of the competition.

MobileMuster has partnered with the Sunshine Coast Council to ensure the community has the opportunity to take their old mobile phone to one of the Coast’s recycling facilities, also available at libraries. Since 1998, Mobile Muster has collected and recycled 1500 tonnes of mobile waste, including over 9.8 million mobile phones and batteries, plus more than 574,000 kilograms of accessories which have been kept out of landfill. Residents need to place their no-longer-needed mobile phone device in to the MobileMuster black wheelie bins at the recycling facilities across the Coast, or one of the libraries in their MobileMuster cardboard box collection points. All brands of mobile phone are accepted, along with their batteries, chargers and accessories.

SUNCOAST SPINNERS TOURNAMENT A WINNER The country’s largest wheelchair basketball tournament took place at Caloundra Indoor Stadium recently. The Sunshine Coast social wheelchair basketball club, the Suncoast Spinners, hosted the 14th annual tournament, which featured 20 teams across three grades of competition. Tourism, Events and Sport Portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the Sunshine Coast Council was proud to sponsor the event. “The Sunshine Coast boasts a reputation of hosting very successful major sporting events and national and international teams for training camps,” Cr O’Pray says. “The calibre of participants at this tournament provides a platform for scouting elite athletes as well as helping many players prepare for Paralympic events.” myweeklypreview.com.au

LOCALS GET BEHIND LIFEFLIGHT RENO PROJECT As fundraisers hit the halfway mark in Project Renovation Rescue, the local community rallies to raise even more money. WORDS: Rachael Tickner.

T

he Carmichael family knows just how important the work of the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue service is. Their little boy, Sonny, required urgent transportation care from Toowoomba to Brisbane when he was very unwell about a year ago. Mum Petrea grew up on the Sunshine Coast and the Carmichaels are big supporters of RACQ LifeFlight and the annual charity ball.

The local community has continued to rally around the LifeFlight Project Renovation Rescue project as fundraisers reveal the organisation is halfway to achieving its goal of $84,450. The transformation is set to take place later this year and will see changes to the medical storeroom and renovations to the hangar space. The new renovated rescue base will assist in the improvement of being able to facilitate internal training – both flight and ground based.

The Coast has had a rescue helicopter service since 1979 – the first service operated out of the Big Cow, near Yandina from 1979 to 1983. In 1983 the service moved to the Sunshine Coast Airport and in 2016, relocated to the current LifeFlight Hanger space at the airport site. In 2013, the service became known as the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight

Rescue helicopter service. There are 29 staff who service the Sunshine Coast base.

LifeFlight’s Director of Aeromedical Services, David Donaldson, says the function of the building has evolved over the years and this project will properly fit out the office and other facilities, to suit current operations.

“Changes to the medical storeroom aids our LifeFlight critical care doctors in their

lifesaving efforts,” Mr Donaldson says.

Foundation executive director Kim Sutton says, “Whilst the larger renovations still need more funding, other parts of the transformation project can start taking place for smaller refurbishment wishlist items.

Some of the requirements are being able to be purchased immediately.

The planned upgrade is timely for the local base, which completed 505 missions in the 2018-2019 financial year, making it one of the organisation’s busiest bases.

“The recent financial year was actionpacked for the Sunshine Coast crew. In that time, they carried out missions including airlifting critically injured people from car crashes, rescuing hikers from mountains and transferring sick patients to hospitals, that offer high levels of care,” Mr Donaldson says.

“The end of last year continued to be busy for the Sunshine Coast crew and we expect this to continue throughout 2020.”

Ms Sutton, says, “Locals who have already donated a significant amount to the project recently gathered to celebrate the halfway point of the LifeFlight Foundation’s fundraising goal and have encouraged other people in the community to help do their bit.

“The Sunshine Coast Base renovation

project is a wonderful opportunity for the local community to get behind their local aeromedical rescue service. The impact of each donation is clearly visible, with donors able to see the improvements their gifts make to the base, as well as having their donations proudly recognised on the wall of the base, for years to come. The community’s support is very important to us and highly valued.

“So far, $47,850 has been raised towards Project Renovation Rescue,” she says.

Mr Donaldson says the Sunshine Coast base is one of the busiest RACQ LifeFlight Rescue bases around Queensland. “Our helicopter crews are at the hangar around the clock, every day of the year, to make sure they’re ready to respond to emergencies, as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“The upgrades will be very important for the team that works at the base. While the crew team is often in the public eye, there’s also a team of people working hard at the base to support the operation, including engineers, administration and fundraising staff.”

CREATIVE WOMEN OF SURF JOIN FORCES FOR EXHIBITION

She to Sea is an all-female art exhibition that has run in conjunction with the Noosa Festival of Surfing since 2018. It is a celebration of women coming together to share their love of the ocean, surf, art, photography and surfwear.

Sunshine Coast artist and surf photographer Tracy Naughton (pictured far right) of Let Me Sea had the idea for She to Sea a few years back as a way women can support each other through their work and passion for the ocean. “I am so stoked to be gearing up for our third annual exhibition,� she says. “It is something that is so important to me and all the girls involved. We have some newcomers this year and we can’t wait to share new work.�

Ms Naughton’s idea originally stemmed from a desire to

belong to something larger than herself and to build a network for women in the creative surf industry. “I have been asked if our exhibition is anti-men or if men are even allowed to attend and I was quite shocked at the thought that people thought men were not invited to join in! It was not the point at all. We have so much love and respect for the men of surfing but this is about something which faces women in business and in general life. It’s not about anti-men. SYMPOSIUM TO CONSIDER SAFETY RISKS OF THE FUTURE Latest research on the safety risks associated with robots and artificial intelligence and how pedestrians and cyclists might interact with automated cars in the future will be among the hot topics at a futurefocused symposium at USC Sunshine Coast next month.

The Human Factors 2020: At the Cutting Edge symposium on February 10 has been organised by USC’s Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems and is expected to attract human factors and safety science researchers and practitioners from across Australia.

USC’s Professor Paul Salmon (pictured) says the study of human factors examines interactions between systems and people in order to improve safety, performances and outcomes across a range of sectors such as transportation, workplace health, defence, sport and outdoor education, and city design. “The aim of this symposium is to communicate USC’s latest Human Factors research in these areas,� he says.

Professor Salmon recently received an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant, valued at $460,522 over three years, to lead the delivery of a framework for the management of safe artificial intelligence systems.

He will speak at the symposium about his ongoing research into the safety risks associated with future technologies. Other speakers include Dr Gemma Read, Dr Nicholas Stevens and Dr Clare Dallat.

Let’s talk rubbish

Meet the winner of the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award for Environment and Sustainability. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

B

uderim mother of three Alison Foley is a wonderful example – not only to her children, but to our entire community – of someone who is doing their bit to help look after our planet.

Announced as the winner of the 2020 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award for Environment and Sustainability last week, she has spent the past two years encouraging people to pick up 10 pieces of litter whenever they can. Her idea has taken off and she has sparked a growing movement of concerned citizens who are drawn to her simple approach to what is a massive global issue.

Ms Foley founded Ten Little Pieces two years ago and her Facebook page now has more than 10,000 followers. Ten Little Pieces is held in such high regard, it is now a Community Ally of Clean Up Australia Day, a 5 Gyres Ambassador and a member of the United National Environment Program – Global Partnership on Marine Litter.

Ms Foley was nominated for the Australia Day Award for an project she spearheaded in April last year. During a brainstorming session with Sunshine Coast Council, she came up with an idea to encourage people

to pick up cigarette butts at Alexandra Headland. A ballot box asked beachgoers questions like ‘budgie smugglers or boardies?’, ‘Queensland or NSW for the 2019 State of Origin?’. Voters could place a cigarette butt into one of two sides of the bin to cast their vote. It was a way to generate awareness and education about correct disposal of cigarettes and after a three-month trial in partnership with Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, CleanWater Group and Sunshine Coast Council, an incredible 12,000 cigarette butts had been collected.

“Cigarette butts are a type of plastic and are highly toxic,” says Ms Foley. “The research shows us if we can use the cigarette butt litter as a target for education programs, all other forms of litter will diminish.

“Winning the Australia Day Award is an incredible acknowledgement of hope that we can make a difference,” Ms Foley adds.

“It doesn’t matter what impact you are attempting to make. You have power as an individual. Whether it’s picking up one cigarette butt or 12,000, like we collected at Alexandra Headland.

Ms Foley can clearly recall the moment that sparked the idea for Ten Little Pieces, because it was an a-ha moment that involved her children.

“About two years ago I was at the beach in Noosa and my kids were whingeing for ice-cream. I said, ‘Right kids, an ice-cream is going to cost you 10 little pieces of rubbish.’

They came back not long after with arms full of cigarette butts, cans and so on. We washed our hands and got the ice-cream. My six-year-old Liam asked if he could have his in a cone, because he didn’t want the little plastic spoon that came with a cup.

“I realised that an act of collecting litter can make a connection. He connected his consumption with having an environmental impact. He did it in the moment – it still gives me goosebumps to connect those dots. When children engage in an activity, it’s very easy to open a dialogue. Where does this come from, what might happen if we leave it here?”

Ms Foley has three sons under eight and feels a responsibility to leave them – and all children – a clean planet.

“My history is as a superyacht stewardess and my passion for the ocean really does stem

from that,” she says. “I was fortunate to be able to visit some of the most beautiful places in the world, both above and below the water.

When you become a mother, your interests shift and you look out for the wellbeing of your children.

“To realise our children won’t have the same privileges we had in terms of pristine environments hits me in my core. As a mum, I want to do everything I can to give them that opportunity and to protect and preserve the beauty of our earth.

“It’s one thing to be aware of environmental issues but it means nothing without action. If we’re not implementing change, then we’re not actually making any difference at all.

“The crux of Ten Little Pieces is a very simple act that demonstrates beautifully that it feels good to do good. From a young family’s perspective, it’s difficult to commit to a two-hour clean up. To be able to pick up a little piece of rubbish anytime, anywhere is simple.”

Not long after that fortuitous day at the beach, Ms Foley started her Ten Little Pieces Facebook page and is now launching an education program taking her environmental message into schools, starting from early learning centres right through to year 12.

“What I’m seeing with the education program is that children are authentically engaged and want to know the truth,” she

says. “They want to know the facts and how other people have developed solutions. Then they want support to engineer their own action plans and their own ways to implement change. Children see solution development without the blinkers and conditioning that adults do.”

In May she’ll take the Ten Little Pieces message beyond the Sunshine Coast when she joins the eXXpedition Round The World 2019/21. She’ll join a pioneering global sailing mission to research and raise awareness of and advocate solutions to plastic pollution in our oceans.

“I’m away for most of May, but only onboard for eight days,” she says. “We have shore-based missions in Tonga and Fiji, speaking to community groups and schools.

I’m really excited and really honoured to be able to contribute to world-leading science on this and to collaborate with my fellow crew mates from so many different disciplines towards the development of solutions is an extraordinary opportunity and I’m sure it will be a life-changing opportunity. ”

his Australia Day we recognised passionate people dedicated to our community. They include a man who supported those in need, a woman helping to save our environment and a community group caring for and rehoming our four-legged friends.

More than 400 dignitaries, nominees, their nominators and guests gathered to celebrate some incredible people in our community at the annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards ceremony on Friday, January 24.

The top honour went to Mark Forbes, founder of eating disorder treatment centre endED, who was announced as the 2020 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year.

Mark and his wife Gayle started endED four years ago, after many years supporting two daughters battling an eating disorder.

Thanks to Mark, endED now provides

nationwide support to eating disorder sufferers and their families, and recently, in partnership with the Butterfly Foundation, he raised more than $2.8 million to develop endED Butterfly House at Mooloolah Valley, Australia’s first residential treatment facility for eating disorder sufferers.

The awards provide an opportunity to thank the people in our community whose passion and dedication to helping others is making a difference to so many lives.

This year’s Young Citizen of the Year is Ella Woodborne. Ella founded the Grammar Green Team, designed to teach others about the planet, its animals and plants, its strengths and weaknesses.

Our Senior Citizen of the Year, Mark Skinner, is chairman of The Board Meeting surf charity, which has raised more than $1.5 million to help local kids with disabilities.

The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge took out the Community Group or Organisation.

Emeritus Professor Jennifer Radbourne is the Creative Award recipient for her years of service to supporting, promoting, mentoring and helping the Sunshine Coast arts and creative sector to grow.

This year’s Environment and Sustainability Award recipient was Ten Little Pieces started

by Alison Foley, who has inspired people to make a difference by collecting 10 little pieces of rubbish whenever they can.

There were joint recipients for the Sport and Recreation Award, with Robert Angus, a volunteer and centre manager at Nambour Little Athletics Centre, sharing the accolades with Brendan Powell and Scott Park, who have been instrumental in growing Oztag on the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to all of the 2020 award recipients and nominees.

Nambour artist Ken Munsie has won Best of Show for his work Messages from the Mountains in the Local Artists Local Content Art Prize exhibition now on show at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Excellence Awards were also awarded to Bernadine Hine for Quiet Place Mt Coolum, Nicole Voevodin-Cash for Fallen, Mieke Van Den Berg for Untitled and for Best ThreeDimensional, Jan Roebuck for Glasshouse Mountains.

The art prize is presented by the Friends, Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc., in partnership with Caloundra Regional Gallery.

STRANGE SCENTS

WHAT HAPPY COUPLES KNOW

Sami Muirhead is shocked by the name of Gwyneth Paltrow’s new candle, but says strange scents are nothing new in her household.

Suzanne Loubris says healthy relationships depend on compromise, negotiation and striving to understand each other better.

I

am in a state of confusion when it comes to Gwyneth Paltrow and her new whacky product line. Aside from acting, the mum-of-two has made a name for herself for selling luxury items via her lifestyle brand Goop. She has released a $75 candle that made headlines around the world and has a name you will not forget. It is called: ‘This smells like my vagina’. True story. Who the heck is making – let alone buying – a candle that supposedly smells like, well, um, your cha-cha.

Yes, I am a grown woman but I can’t bring myself to write the correct anatomical term when it comes to describing the scent of a candle. I have no problem with the word most of the time, but ‘cha-cha’ sounds much less graphic. Yes, I agree, it also sounds a whole lot more immature. The candle has sold out around the world. So either a whole lot of sickos are buying it, or I am just too ignorant to understand a classy product when faced with one.

The product description reads: ‘With a funny, gorgeous, sexy and beautifully unexpected scent, this candle is made with geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar absolutes juxtaposed with Damask rose and ambrette seed to put us in mind of fantasy, seduction and a sophisticated warmth.’

I could not make this stuff up if I tried.

I love a candle, but clearly I am a peasant when it comes to the smells I favour that range about as widespread as vanilla and citronella. If I am getting fancy, I may buy

a lemon scent, but that is as crazy as I go.

I could do with some heavy-duty candles in my house, because if I had to label some of the unpleasant scents in my home they would go a little like this: ‘Foul stench of family and TV room that smells like a vet where all the animals are wet and have been rolling in fertiliser.’

I have another distinct scent that is best summed up as: ‘This school backpack smells like a small animal has died in here and been left for four months.’

And my personal favourite scent is one that permeates from the fridge and is roughly best summed up as: ‘Something is rotting in this cesspit of a white box; if I were you I would hold my breath and make a run for it before you gag to death.’

I need to send Gwyneth an email requesting some work be put into making candle fragrances that reflect reality. Yankee Candle company just announced its annual scent of the year and it is called ‘Awaken’. It smells of sage and driftwood and flowers.

magine a world where two people could communicate with each other in a loving and supportive way. Yeah, I know. That’s ridiculous. Couples in trouble are at loggerheads regularly because that skill has not been taught in the classroom. How many divorces would be prevented if grade 12 included a module on how to negotiate with the love of your life?

I often work with couples and it is not uncommon for one person to talk about how they feel about some behaviour that the other person performs often, only to have the other person refute it with: “no I don’t do that”. It’s a common refrain.

Why would we refuse to believe our life partners when they tell us we do an annoying behaviour? If someone told you your fly was down at work, would you disagree? No, you would check.

If someone told you that you had toilet paper hanging out of your pants, would you say: “nonsense”. No, you would check. It would be insane not to. We would never assume that someone would be telling us these things to be unpleasant.

So if your partner tells you that you snore, why would you deny it? In what universe would someone choose to lie about this? There are a million examples of behaviours that people engage in that cause conflict. Differences in housekeeping, parenting, time management, budgeting.

Instead of people listening to the feedback provided by their partner, they nitpick about

the truthfulness of the statements made: “oh, but I don’t always snore”. What they could say is: “You say I snore, that must be annoying. I will do something about that immediately. Help me figure out how.”

“You say I am messy? What particularly aggravates you? How about I tidy up more?”

It’s all about listening and negotiation.

I once negotiated over table manners.

Stop banging your cutlery on the crockery and I will stop licking sauce off my fingers.

It’s about our differences. Maybe your partner was raised by wolves. They may have not had the opportunity to learn the rules your mother taught you.

At a more complicated level, when one person shares how they feel and the other person says “that doesn’t make sense, let me tell you all the ways in which what you say is wrong”, it can be death to a relationship.

People in relationships have so much to lose, but they will fight over how right they are about a point of difference instead of working out how to problem solve as a team.

We need to learn to understand the world from the view of our partners. Stand alongside them and communicate from a position of being interested in their experience. It’s about finding a balance.

It’s about everyone feeling they are being treated fairly.

And if you can’t do it on your own, there are many mediators, psychologists and family members who are willing and able to provide an objective point of view.

SHOUT OUT IN THE KNOW This weekend, the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association’s (AOCRA) National Sprint Titles are on again at Lake Kawana.

Renowned Coast author Jessica Townsend, whose Nevermoor series is taking the world by storm, recently took part in the #authorsforfireys fundraising auction, which raises money for the nation’s bushfire crisis. The local author, who splits her time between the Coast and the United Kingdom, joined other authors to raise money. Friend and fellow author, award-winning novelist Lynette Noni (pictured right with Ms Townsend), helped spread the word and offered her own auction items for the cause. The organisers of the #authorsforfireys initiative were Australian children’s authors Emily Gale and Nova Weetman. Around $480,000 has already been raised by the authors, proving just how incredible our community is to get behind our first line responders.

WORLD OF VISION AUSTRALIA SERVICES OPENS UP FOR KAI At just eight weeks old, Kai Loomes’ diagnosis of rare brain condition left his family “completely shocked”.

Now 15, Kai lives with septo-optic dysplasia, a condition where the optic nerve and areas of the brain are underdeveloped, and as a result he is completely blind.

“We noticed his eyes were wandering and took him to the specialist when he was around eight weeks old,” says Kai’s mother Kelly Loomes. “We were completely shocked when he was diagnosed.”

After diagnosis, the Loomes went looking for support for Kai and contacted Vision Australia.

“We were given information about a number of different organisations that could help us,” says Mrs Loomes. “Vision Australia was one of them and they came to our house when Kai was about three months old and have been working with us since then.”

A Vision Australia physiotherapist is supporting Kai during school swimming lessons through Queensland’s Specialist Disability Support in Schools program, while a Vision Australia occupational therapist has been helping Kai at home.

“Bethany, our occupational therapist has been working with us to help Kai be able to

pour his own drinks or make a snack at home. It’s something that’s really made a difference and helped him be more independent.”

Recently, Kai has been accessing Vision Australia services through his National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“We’ve been really happy with the NDIS experience,” says Mrs Loomes. “It’s given us the opportunity to access so many more services than we could otherwise. The occupational therapy and things like that have been through the NDIS and its opened up so many opportunities.

“Through the NDIS and Vision Australia we also got a tandem bike for Kai. Going bike riding as a family wasn’t something we ever thought we could do before.”

ATAR IS ON ITS WAY

FLYING HIGH AT FLINDERS

I

n 2020, year 12 students in Queensland will receive an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank), rather than an OP, which has been the ranking system used for the past 26 years. As the title suggests, an ATAR will be used to establish a student’s eligibility for university courses.

Students in Queensland have always been able to get a Tertiary Rank instead of an OP, so it is not a massive change. Queensland universities have also always accepted students from other states based on their ‘rank’. There has always been a conversion table comparing a rank with an OP. For students to be ATAR eligible, they must study five ‘general’ subjects or four general and one ‘applied’ or for general and 1 VET subject. Sunshine Coast Grammar School currently offers 26 general subjects, five applied, and 4 VET subjects. Some students may wish to be ATAR ineligible (not have the appropriate mix of subjects); however, they can still get accepted into university with the appropriate VET qualification.

The big difference to the previous OP system is that year 12 students will sit three assessment pieces internally, which have been written by Grammar staff and approved (endorsed) by the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) plus one external exam in November. For Mathematics and Science subjects, this external exam will count as 50 per cent of their result and for other subjects the external exam will count as 25 per cent (the internal assessment make up the balance of 100 per cent).

The ATAR is calculated by QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) and will be announced mid-December(as was the OP). QTAC has stated there will be some subject scaling processes completed before awarding an ATAR. Schools will learn about the scaling parameters in February after each relevant cohort. In very simple terms, QTAC believes not all subjects are equal, so it is more difficult to get, for example, 80 per cent in one subject compared to 80 per cent in another.

he Matthew Flinders Anglican College community congratulates its year 12 cohort for its strong academic results, continuing Flinders’ record as the leading academic school on the Sunshine Coast and among the top schools in Queensland.

Eleven of Flinders’ year 12 students have been awarded an OP1 – the largest OP1 group for a school in the Sunshine Coast region for 2019, while nine students achieved an OP2 and a further 10 students achieved an OP3.

This resulted in the percentage of OP 1-3 for the cohort equal to 26.5 per cent and compares to 11.4 per cent state-wide.

Furthermore, the Flinders’ year 12 group worked together to achieve the best possible results on the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test with: • 36.4 per cent of students achieving an ‘A’ (compared with 16.5 per cent state-wide), • 64.6 per cent achieving either an ‘A’ or ‘B’ (compared to 46.1 per cent State-wide).

Other notable statistics for Flinders Class of 2019 include: • 41.6 per cent of students achieving an OP 1-5 (compared with 22.5 per cent

PROGRAMMING PATH LEADS TO BRAND-NEW CAMPUS

C

omputer whiz Zane Hutchison knows exactly why he chose to study Computer Science at USC Moreton Bay – it’s the newest course of its kind in the country.

“Because computer science is a field that’s changing so quickly, I knew that the newer the course, the more it would be up to date,” Zane says.

The 17-year-old from Palmwoods will be among the first students to attend Australia’s newest university campus when classes begin on February 24.

USC Moreton Bay offers nearly 50 jobs-focused undergraduate degrees in health, business, communications and design, education, environmental science, psychology and social sciences.

Computer Science is one of three new USC programs that will be offered exclusively at the Moreton Bay campus, along with Engineering (Mechatronic) and Engineering (Electrical and Electronic).

Zane is excited to be among the early adopters. The Nambour Christian College OP1 graduate has his eyes on the future, with plans to one day use his qualifications to provide new software to replace niche products that have become outdated.

A keen surfer, artist and volleyballer, Zane plans to continue living at home while commuting by train from Palmwoods to Petrie to the new USC Moreton Bay campus, and is enthusiastic about the career potential back home on the Sunshine Coast.

“I’ve heard that the submarine cable landing at Maroochydore could create a sort of tech hub here, so I’d be open to working back on the Coast at the end of my degree,” he says.

There is still time to apply to study at USC in Semester one, which starts on February 24.

The mid-January round of offers was released online on January 16 by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), bringing to 4775 the number of university hopefuls who have so far received offers to study at USC. This is up 3.1 per cent on this time last year.

Offers to date include 2090 to applicants from the Sunshine Coast (including Noosa Shire), 1389 to residents of the Moreton Bay region, 247 to Fraser Coast and 146 to Gympie residents.

he Sunshine Coast’s apartment market is looking good, with a number of local developers attributing strong sales to buyers seeking ‘home-size’ apartments in prime locations – with desirable amenities on their doorstep.

Ken Reed, director of Double R Projects

and HMR Projects, says the Coast managed to stay solid in 2019 with a few record-breaking sales in the region.

“Downsizing continues to be an appealing option for people, particularly if kids have left home or no longer need a garden. Whether it’s to realise the capital gain from their family home or to benefit

from a home that’s easier to maintain and lock up and leave, apartments remain a popular choice for this market.

“This market does, however, want an apartment that feels like a home, which is why many of the smaller holiday apartments on the Coast do not meet this demand. The demand is for spacious living areas, decent-sized kitchens, high ceilings, car parking and high-end fixtures and fittings,” Mr Reed says.

Daniel Ryan, development manager of Cube Developments, adds to this, saying its projects are addressing the needs of ‘downsizers’ who still want a home or investment with all the trimmings.

“Our future projects feature a blend of mixed appeal with boutique niche developments or owner-occupier-focused projects for local downsizers and investment product, which we are excited to launch in the coming months.

“While the interstate and international investor market will always be strong on the Coast, at Seanna Residences for instance, we are seeing locals and southeast Queenslanders downsizing from larger fourand five-bedroom homes to home-sized three-bedroom luxury apartments right on the beach, providing them with the lifestyle they have always desired.

to prepare for a population surge, so there is a great deal of construction activity across the region, however, apartments in prime locations with sea views like our seven luxury apartments at Latitude Coolum Beach will continue to be hot property.

“When you have a penthouse, which offers both exclusivity and beautiful ocean views, there’s always going to be demand.

We are, however, finding that buyers are not necessarily as suburb-specific as they may have been in the past. Their priority is finding a high-quality apartment which meets their needs which may include views; beach access; sufficient space to downsize without compromising on lifestyle; and good capital growth,” Mr Reed says.

Mr Ryan agrees: “Development projects with an absolute beachfront or river position with uninterrupted views are trending to sell quicker with most having in excess of 85 per cent presales prior to construction.”

So, what’s the outlook for the Coast’s apartment market? Mr Reed says the interest rate drop helped spur on sales and “we feel positive that buyers will remain confident in the region in 2020. Last year, units were selling fast on the Sunshine Coast.

“I think there is definitely still a strong appetite for interstate buyers to move to Queensland and in particular, the Sunshine Coast – it’s a sea change
