ho else can remember watching that old television show, Beyond 2000? As a family, we would gather around the tellie once a week and ooh and ahh at the technological advancements that were predicted for the new century. Often we would laugh dubiously. It was, after all, the early ’90s – a time when VHS ruled our Friday nights and before the internet dominated our homes.

Wearable computers, in-car navigation systems and MRI machines were inventions that seemed a lifetime away, and yet here we are, smart watches adorning our wrists.

Sure, we may not (yet) be flying around like the Jetsons, but society has come a long way quickly in terms of AI. So, with a new decade kicking off, we thought it timely to take a look at what the future may bring. From communicating via thought transmission to using holographic technology, there are some interesting predictions. You can read the story on page 14.

Also this week, we have the pleasure of sharing the story of Turia Pitt who is working hard to support fellow Australians who are suffering from the devastating bushfires. The story is on page 18.

And, with Australia Day upon us, we highlight some of the celebratory activities taking place across the Sunshine Coast this long weekend.

ON THE BALL Where do you live? In Maroochydore near the beach.

First job? My first job was mowing lawns as a teenager in Christchurch, NZ. What are you currently working on? I’m currently working on some new programs for 2020, namely our school holidays sports events, and a collaborative fundraising sports event for kids.

Your family includes? My partner Jade Harrison, my daughter Oceah (four), my son Dream (two) and our 13-year-old staffy Zara.

First car? Mitsubishi Lancer wagon.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? The birth of my first child, Oceah in 2015. I felt like my life started over again, for the better.

Favourite book? The Legends of Maui. It’s a beautiful book about Maori myths and legends that I read to my kids.

Your greatest regret? I don’t really have regrets as such, but I’ve learned lessons and they’ve shaped who I am today.

If your life was a book, what would be the title? Hoop Dream’n.

What are you reading now? Andrew Johns: The Two Of Me. Favourite song and why? Absolutely anything Hip Hop and RnB, more specifically 1990s–2000s.

“I would definitely create more outdoor basketball courts…”

What are you watching right now and would you recommend it? I’ve been watching a series on Stan called Power. I’ve enjoyed the first few series, but we’ll see how it goes from here.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Today and it was basketball – I play most days.

Now as the managing director of Motiv8sports, he facilitates sports events and in-school programs to hundreds of kids on the Coast so they can find joy, develop skills and hone confidence through sports-based activity and entertainment.

forget when I was in the Solomon Islands. Jade and I were exploring remote islands in a little canoe, going over beautiful coral and crystal clear water, snorkelling with a couple of locals who were showing us their world. We really were in the middle of nowhere and it was truly paradise. We caught a huge kingfish and the chef back at the resort turned it into an incredible meal for us that night, which we ate in the overwater restaurant. What a day!

Best advice you’ve been given? Always trust your instincts.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Cotton Tree. It has a great park for my kids to play at, the beach and river are right there, there’s the public pools, good cafes, and a basketball half-court.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? I would definitely create more outdoor basketball courts, there just aren’t enough around the place.

What achievement are you most proud of? I’m proud of being a good father to my two kids.

You are happiest when? I’m playing basketball or coaching kids at Motiv8sports.

What frustrates you the most? Waiting at traffic lights, windy conditions and long queues.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I play sport and listen to music and try to reset my brain.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Travel and experience what the world has to offer while you’re young.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Tupac Shakur, Steph Curry and Nelson Mandela.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Buy a house and build a half-court in the backyard.

Self Funded retirees protest the high cost of hearing aids Sunshine Coast: July 2019

The high cost of good quality digital hearing aids has been a significant barrier to Self Funded Retirees obtaining help for their communication problems. One local clinic has decided to take the issue head on. Senior Clinician Lisa Burley says “It became apparent to us that it was becoming almost impossible for people to get the help they needed and it was effecting their day to day lifestyle.”

2020 & beyond Experts say to predict where we’ll be in the future, we need to look to the past. With 2020 upon us, we revisit life on the Sunshine Coast in the 1920s and imagine what it might be like in 2120, 100 years from now.

A

new decade has dawned and in the first two weeks, we have seen some major events unfold. The Australian bushfires continue to rage, sparking fear around the world that the predicted effects of man-made climate change are here and very real. President Donald Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani, resulting in retaliation from Iran and fears of World War 3. And Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped a bombshell of their own by announcing their wish to step down as senior members of the British royal family.

You could be forgiven for thinking, what’s the world coming to? Fear and insecurity are rife, but is it any different to the fear and insecurity we faced the last time we entered the ’20s? And will we be any better off the next time we enter the ’20s, 100 years from now?

Life in the 1920s was definitely simpler – but a lot harder – than it is today. According to Dr Amy Clarke, senior lecturer in history at the University of the Sunshine Coast, life here in the 1920s was vastly different. The Roaring Twenties, with its accompanying economic prosperity, new fashions and raucous parties, had not yet arrived on the Sunshine Coast, which was small, quiet and isolated from the rest of the world.

“We were really only starting to develop into a modern society on the Sunshine Coast in the 1920s,” Dr Clarke says. “We only got the train connection to Brisbane in the 1880s and 1890s. Most people would have been using the horse and cart to get around, as well as

railways and trams.

“The Sunshine Coast was still a rural, underdeveloped environment. Electricity was quite new and something quite a few parts of the Sunshine Coast didn’t have. It was the same with telephone connections, so they would have been relying on mail and the telegraph.”

The majority of people worked in farming and agriculture, with the sugar cane industry, dairy industry and produce like our famous ginger and pineapples the mainstays of our local economy. Timber getting was still being

“Locals who lived around Buderim or the hinterland would go to places like Cotton Tree for the summer holidays, but there were really no facilities, no caravan parks or anything like that.”

“We were really only starting to develop into a modern society on the Sunshine Coast in the 1920s. We only got the train connection to Brisbane in the 1880s and 1890s” Dr Amy Clarke, USC senior lecturer in history

done, but had decreased by the 1920s, making way for heavy industry like paper milling and production of furniture and machinery. Tourism had not yet taken off.

“The tourism industry was in its very early stages,” Dr Clarke says. “The roads were terrible and it would take hours to travel from Brisbane. We were still relying on Old Gympie Road, which was full of potholes and ruts. It was a pretty nasty trip.”

The population of the Coast in the 1920s was predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon and Christian. There was a government push to move the Indigenous population onto reserves like Cherbourg, and the Stolen Generations-era was underway, with the forced removal of children from their families.

“It’s not talked about much but we also had a huge number of South Sea Islanders from Fiji, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands and

the Solomon Islands,” Dr Clarke says.

“They arrived as indentured labour for the sugar industry.”

Social life revolved around the local church or sporting group. Social dances were held on Friday and Saturday nights in the local hall and were the main social outings of the week, along with church.

Children received a limited education.

Girls left school around seven and boys around 12 or 13, as they could be put to good use as farm labour. Only wealthy professional families educated their children beyond these ages, sending them to boarding school.

Diets were simple and people relied on what could be grown and easily accessed locally. “Transportation of food from further afield was incredibly costly. By the end of the 1920s when the Depression hit, people were incredibly poor and would send children out to catch rabbits to eat for dinner.

“And all clothes were made at home by the women. We don’t really start to see mass manufacturing of clothes until the 1950s. The ‘make do and mend’ mentality was very much entrenched.”

Dr Clarke says the region’s population would not have been more than 150,000, including the far-flung pastoral areas.

Dr Marcus Bussey, a senior lecturer in both history and futures at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says it’s easy to romanticise the past, but in reality, life was pretty tough. “Even though the past is ‘factual’, it is something we imagine. 1920s – THE POST-WAR PERIOD The First World War had a major impact on many communities. Men from small towns went off to war and never returned, or returned severely damaged.

“These small towns were reeling in the 1920s from the shock of their men coming home with what we now know is PTSD, or with lost limbs, or not coming back at all,” says Dr Amy Clarke. “It was a difficult time on the Sunshine Coast in terms of employment. Women had to make ends meet and keep their families going, but they couldn’t do work that would be seen as taking work away from the men returning from the war. Women certainly weren’t allowed to be working in any sort of job a man could be working in.

“The problem we see is returned servicemen coming back from the First World War to find their jobs had been completely removed or they’d been replaced by someone else and they no longer had a job. There was a wave of men coming back having served their country, not having jobs and being forced to leave their families and go out further afield to find work. There was a breakdown of families we had not seen before the war.”

Turia Pitt responds to the bushfire crisis We speak with bushfire survivor Turia Pitt about her @spendwiththem campaign to help those affected by the fires. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

W

hen Turia Pitt sat down on January 6 to share her sorrow about Australia’s bushfire crisis with her combined one million social media followers, her grief was evident.

“Fires had been raging up and down the South Coast for close to a month,’’ she wrote.

“Michael (her partner) did food and supply runs in his boat. We watched as the sky went

red and black days before Christmas.

“More fires broke out on New Year’s Eve. I watched, my mouth agape, as two angry plumes from the fires north and south of us joined together over Mollymook Beach.

“And then, the power went out. Mobile reception became spotty. Internet was down.

Rumours swirled around town like the ashes that rained down on us. Homes had been lost.

Whole streets obliterated.

“I packed my go bag and filled the bath with water. At a quarter to eight, the evening was quiet. Not a peaceful and serene quiet, but an eerie quiet. An apocalyptic quiet.

“And it was dark. No power. No lights.”

What came then from the former Young Australian of the Year finalist was an outpour of raw emotion. As a bushfire survivor herself, Ms Pitt is understandably struggling.

In 2011, Ms Pitt was caught in a fastmoving bushfire while competing in an ultramarathon through Western Australia’s Kimberley region. She was only 24 and, trapped by the blaze, suffered full thickness burns to 65 per cent of her body.

Barely alive, she was helicoptered out of the bush, and spent more than six months in hospital undergoing 200 operations.

“I’ve had to focus on not letting my emotions and own experiences get the better of me. I’ve tried to not let the panic genie out of the bottle. And, I’m exhausted. I feel like I’ve done 10 marathons. And we can’t relax because it’s only the start of summer, and it’s not over yet. So just like in a marathon, I’ve realised I have to pace myself.

“I’ve had recurring nightmares about running through flames with my son in my arms. I thought about leaving our small town of Ulladulla multiple times. Why didn’t I? I saw terrifying footage of 30-metre-high flames on the side of the highway at Sussex Inlet (a town just north of us and blocking the way out).

And travelling south was like travelling into the jaws of the dragon,’’ she wrote.

“When I found out friends were planning on defending their property I felt like shaking them. I wanted to scream. You have no idea that a fire sounds like a thousand road trains coming towards you. You have no idea how hot it feels, and that you will watch your skin bubble before your very eyes. You have no idea that the smoke will feel like it’s invading every single one of your pores.

“And you have no idea that in those last

few seconds where it’s almost upon you that you will KNOW that you are about to die.

“At the same time, I’ve felt like it’s not my place to flip out when people all around me have lost everything. Friends have lost homes, precious belongings. Lives have been lost.”

In true form, Ms Pitt has tackled the devastation head-on. When My Weekly Preview contacted her last week, she was in the throes of promoting the @spendwiththem campaign, launched with her friend Grace.

“We wanted to do something right now that would make a difference to small businesses in fire-affected communities, and something that would continue to support them for months to come,” Ms Pitt said.

“We thought this was a way to provide support to business in fire ravaged areas, and it was something we could do quickly.

“Everyone in Australia is desperate to help out in any way they can. We know people all over the country are looking for any way they can help – and this is something we thought we could add to the mix.”

While it is going to be a long haul, Ms Pitt is confident the support shown will assist communities to rebuild. It’s a timely reminder ahead of this year’s Australia Day celebrations of what really counts. For Ms Pitt, this year’s event is going to be a sombre one.

“What we do know, is that Australians do whatever it takes to help our mates. We have seen the Australian spirit alive and well – the volume of fundraising, volunteering, people finding ways to help in every way they can – has been really amazing.

“It’s something to feel good about even in the midst of so much sadness.

“We live in the most beautiful country in the world. To be Australian to be willing to do whatever it takes to help a fellow Aussie in need and to commit to preserving our amazing country for future generations.”

EUMUNDI RSPCA CENTRE NEEDS DONATIONS The bushfires have killed an estimated 500 million animals and the sad reality is, that most of the saved wildlife, will not have a home to go back to. RSPCA is working to find a solution for animals that can’t be returned home just yet.

With the local rehabilitation centre at Eumundi and also at Wacol, in Brisbane, there are ways that the Coast community can offer a hand and lend their support. Donations are vital and will enable RSPCA Queensland to expand the capacity of their wildlife wards and resources to assist the ever-growing number of wildlife, requiring care each year.

Michael Beatty, spokesperson for RSPCA Queensland says: “This time of year is always our busiest, because it’s what we call, ‘the trauma season’. This is when native animals and birds are breeding and giving birth, and consequently moving around a lot more than any other time of year.

“This in turn, puts them more at risk for dog attacks and also the traffic accidents are increasing the number of wildlife patients, being hit by cars.”

Mr Beatty says the recent bushfire crisis has exacerbated the situation even more. “We first saw the drought, where the little koalas were already suffering, and when the bushfires started, they were again in harm’s way.

Their bodies were not prepared, as they were already suffering and feeling the pain, through a diminished food source,” he adds.

“MAP teaches participants how to stay afloat when waves of anxiety start rolling in and how to surf them to safety. Learning how to disarm anxiety provoking thoughts and problem solve, helps participants take charge and reclaim happiness,” she says.

Ms Hegerty says, “No-one is immune from anxiety as it affects people of all ages, genders, occupations and social standing.”

MAP is a free, four-week program that requires participants to attend a two-hour session each week. Participants learn a range of anxiety management techniques from a qualified team of social workers.

Two Sunshine Coast men will be rowing 5000 kilometres across the North Atlantic Ocean from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, as part of the 2020 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. Sippy Down’s local, George Hugheston-Roberts and Mooloolaba’s Matt Mountain will row for an interval period of two hours on and off, for up to 60 days, to complete the big journey. “It’s a giant challenge, but we both love adventure, and are training hard, so we are ready for the race starting in December this year,” Mr Hugheston-Roberts says.

DOCTORS OPTING FOR RADIATION-FREE SCANS Young Coast patients may soon be able to skip the x-ray queue and opt for an ultrasound when presenting to a Sunshine Coast emergency department with fractures, thanks to a Wishlist research grant worth almost $20,000. Emergency specialists at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) Dr Michelle Davison and Dr Ruaraidh McRitchie will be studying the use of a specialised IMAGE: DR RUARAIDH MCRITCHIE AND DR MICHELLE DAVISON ultrasound, to diagnose wrist fractures in those aged between five and 15, which will be the first trial to demonstrate that an x-ray may not required for that type of fracture.

USC OFFERS RECORD NUMBER OF DEGREES Following a major expansion of the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), this year Queensland Tertiary Admissions (QTAC) has offered 4775 university hopefuls the opportunity to study at USC. The recently released, mid-January round of offers, brings the offer percentage up by 3.1, on this time last year.

Regions to include offers include 2090 to applicants from the Sunshine Coast (including Noosa Shire), 1389 to residents of the Moreton Bay region, as well as 247 to Fraser Coast and 146 to Gympie residents.

Following on from the construction and the opening of USC’s Moreton Bay campus at Petrie next month, almost 1000 offers have been made for places at the new campus.

The most popular degrees across all campuses, include the healthrelated disciplines of nursing science, biomedical science and paramedic science, followed by degrees in animal ecology and business. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill congratulated those who have received offers to study at USC and urged new students to join in orientation activities in mid-February.

“A university education is a wonderful experience and opens up many career doors,” he says. “I’d encourage our new students to make the most of the opportunities that will be presented to them during orientation and throughout their degrees.”

NEW AIRPORT RUNWAY REACHES MILESTONE Last month, the Coast reached a key milestone in the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project (SCAEP) with the first layer of asphalt laid. The new airport project will see more than 400,000 tonnes, almost eight times the weight of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, placed on top of a compacted sand embankment. Sunshine Coast Council deputy mayor Tim Dwyer says, “This exciting milestone is only the tip of the iceberg for what is to come in the next few months. This is great news for the Sunshine Coast community – with under five months to go until the new runway takes off – it’s time for us all to get excited and start thinking about what this new piece of infrastructure can offer.”

With many businesses doing their bit to help raise funds for the recent bushfire crisis, The Dock, Mooloolaba has raised a total of $6189 to be donated to Wildlife Rescue Queensland and WIRES Wildlife Rescue. The patrons helped get behind the cause by purchasing #koalabeer – special kegs with all proceeds from the sales of Diablo Ginger Beer, Green Beacon, Balter Brewing, Stone & Wood and Gage Road Brewing, as well as $2 from every chicken parmigiana sold being contributed. The venue also hosted a special busking for wildlife event featuring Reverend Billy.

UPGRADES TO PARK WELCOMED BY LOCALS Hinterland dog lovers along with exercise enthusiasts have welcomed the recent upgrades to the much-loved Glass House Mountains District Park. The changes include a reburished dog off leash area, new footpath network, playground, amenities and new landscaping. Sunshine Coast Council division one councillor, Rick Baberowski says the four-hectare parkland has something for everyone. “This great space has gone from a privately owned site to one of the best district level parklands in a relatively few years. It’s a really impressive offering of open space, bushland and wetlands, a sheltered playground and picnic facilities.”

ith Australia having been through so much adversity over the past few months, this year’s Sunshine Coast Australia Day awards held on January 24 at The Lifepointe Baptist Church, in Buderim are more meaningful than ever.

The awards are a celebration of the contribution that individuals, community groups and organisations make towards the region.

Each year the Sunshine Coast Council recognises everyday people who are unsung heroes.

Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson says, “There is no doubt that Australians have faced some monumental challenges in the last few months – both here on the Sunshine Coast and further afield – as we have dealt with the devastation of bushfires impacting communities across our nation.

“The heartbreaking loss of human life, wildlife and people’s homes and businesses is something that has touched us all and it is times like this when the true Australian spirit of lending a helping hand really comes into its own.

“From our heroic firefighters and emergency services personnel, to mums and dads who have battled to save their possessions and themselves, to our defence force personnel who have helped evacuate entire towns, through to people who gave what they could in the way of a donation – our nation has pulled together in the face of these incredibly difficult circumstances.

heads up the not-for-profit emergency food relief and low-cost grocery organisation Gateway Care. Ms Knight was awarded for leading a team of volunteers to keep the store operational for the community.

Meanwhile, the thriving endED was named as the Community Group or Organisation winner. Founded by Mark and Gayle Forbes, the voluntary-based organisation provides nationwide support to hundreds of people suffering with an eating disorder, and constructed Australia’s first ED residential facility.

nspector Matthew Inwood has recently returned home to Caloundra after being deployed to help fight the New South Wales bushfires. The newly appointed Sunshine Coast area director for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services took 18 Sunshine Coast volunteer firefighters to the Lake George area and was part of an incident management team. Now back on the Coast, he reflects on a busy few months after starting his new role in November, just as the Noosa fires were raging.

“It’s a little challenging to start a new position on the run, but equally good to get to know people quickly,” he says. “For me, it was wonderful to see how many wonderful volunteers we have on the Sunshine Coast, as well as career firefighters. It was wonderful to see people, under those operational circumstances, really showing their capacity and capabilities.

“From my perspective, it’s nice to see that level of commitment there up front. It gives you a quick look from an operational perspective of things you may or may not need to build on. It was wonderful for me to see how committed people on the Sunshine

Coast are.”

Thankfully, rain had started to fall when his crew arrived at Lake George and the fires were beginning to be contained.

“We’ve had crews circling the fires – Queensland crews, Tasmanian crews and New Zealand crews. We had about 130 out-of-area personnel as well as crews from the New South Wales fire service. Their main task was patrolling the fire grounds. Most of the fires were at the stage of being contained due to more favourable weather conditions.

“The predominant focus was what we call mopping up and blacking out. Making sure the area is secure and no fire is likely to escape those firegrounds and threaten the community. While it’s often seen as a menial task, it’s often one of the more critical tasks.

The other critical thing is giving the local people a rest. These people have been flat out for two to three weeks, with intense fire conditions.

“It was really good to see the interaction and how everyone works so well together. The incident management teams were made up of people from New South Wales, Queensland

PROFILE and fire incident management teams from Canada and California. “We all use the same incident management system, so we are able to integrate seamlessly no matter what part of the world we’re in. I did a tour to Canada in 2015 and fitted in. It’s really good to see the multinational countries come together and get out there to do the job as best they can with the common goal of restoring normality back to those communities. Whether nationally or internationally, we use the same tactics and protocols to achieve the common outcome of protecting the community.�

Mr Inwood began his firefighting career 29 years ago while still a teenager, attracted by the idea of selfless service. “I was following my heart and moving into a career doing something I enjoyed,� he says. “I’d been in private enterprise prior to that. I enjoyed being able to do something for the community and having a rewarding career providing help and assistance to people in their time of need. “It’s a very meaningful job. I feel quite lucky to be able to have such a great bunch of firefighters who give up their time selflessly.

That in itself is a really wonderful thing.�

Mr Inwood says the support coming from the community in terms of donations for the rural fire services has been “absolutely fantastic�. “There’s a level of government funding

provided but the donations will assist the brigades to get some extra equipment. There are always things in any industry and any organisation that are nice to have, but sometimes you need additional funding to get those things that enable them to do their job that more easily.�

While the bushfire season hit the Sunshine Coast early, Mr Inwood says we still need to take precautions. “If we continue to see a bit of moisture like we’re seeing, things are looking better but we can’t afford to be complacent. The ground moisture content is still quite low and it wouldn’t take much, a couple of hot days and things can turn very quickly. “We’re in record drought conditions and people need to remain cognisant of that. It’s about the community being prepared. I have spent my career trying to get that across to the community and making sure they’re heeding the warnings. It helps us, the firefighters, if we’re having good access into the property, having gutters cleared, protection zones around your assets, making sure lawns are mowed. In rural areas it’s things like having backup pumps, fittings on water tanks and the like. All those things can assist us to get in and do our job. “It has certainly been among the worst fire seasons. We have record high temperatures and combined with the record drought, it all add up to make a fire season more volatile.�

he listed hybrid securities market has gathered momentum, delivering approximately 7.2 per cent (6.0 per cent excluding the franking benefit) during 2019.

The Coalition’s surprise victory coincided with a series of rate cuts from the Reserve Bank, spurring the prices of these securities higher as many investors sought to rotate out of cash into riskier assets to replace lost portfolio income as a result of declining term deposit rates.

Typically, lower interest rates have a positive effect on the price of fixed income instruments given the inverse relationship between price and yield (bond prices rise when interest rates fall).

Importantly for hybrids, the income

received is determined by a fixed margin which is added to a reference rate, the bank bill swap rate (BBSW).

The BBSW reflects changes in the cash rate, which in recent years has declined as the macro backdrop has deteriorated. This trend has been particularly pronounced over the past 12 months as the Reserve Bank has reversed the course of monetary policy, shifting to an easing bias early in the year before cutting the cash rate by 75 basis points.

For hybrids, this has translated into lower income generated by hybrid securities, with the average cash distribution rate on major bank hybrids compressing by around 70 basis points to 3.4 per cent over the past six months, reflecting changes to the local policy rate.

However, one of the most meaningful return indicators in fixed income is a security’s yield to maturity – the annualised return of a security if purchased today and held to its maturity date, collecting all payments along the way.

On this metric, there has been a meaningful decline, with the average total return on a five-year major bank hybrid sliding almost one percentage point to 3.8 per cent (inclusive of franking) since the central bank began easing in June.

Sami Muirhead is looking forward to a year of new film releases, including a new Top Gun and a new James Bond film starring Daniel Craig.

Richard O’Leary is at the age where we are statistically supposed to be our most miserable, but he’s choosing to look on the bright side.

I

am hyperventilating at some of the movies coming to the big screen.

Top of my list is the 25th James Bond instalment, No Time To Die. Daniel Craig is back for his fifth turn at playing 007. It has been 14 years since Casino Royale, when we all inhaled sharply seeing Daniel Craig swagger out of the sea in the Bahamas wearing THOSE pale blue trunks. Licence to thrill, did you say?

In the name of research for this column, I had a quick look online to see if you can actually buy them for your bloke to wear.

You can only buy them on Gumtree these days, which makes me sad.

Great balls of fire! We are also getting a new Top Gun in June, 31 years after we first fell in love with the original wingmen, Maverick and Goose. Kenny Loggins is even recording a new version of Danger Zone!

It’s beyond exciting!

We still do not know a whole heap about the movie, except of course, Tom Cruise will have his shirt off a lot as he rides motorbikes, plays volleyball and flies jets.

We do know that Val Kilmer is back as Iceman and Goose’s son is pivotal to the storyline. If you do not know who Goose is, then you were clearly born after the year 2000. I miss Meg Ryan on the big screen.

These days she is directing, but no one could portray irony, kindness, wit and fragility quite like Meg. In fact, I must put on the kids’ weekend agenda to sit down and have a

movie marathon as we work our way through You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless In Seattle, City Of Angels and Kate And Leopold. I know you are jealous of this Meg movie marathon I plan to hold. My guess is the kids will be begging me to do extra homework rather than sit down and watch my Meg Marathon. And I will be excluding When Harry Met Sally because I am the only female who thinks it is overrated and not that funny. Takes all types.

So there are heaps of popcorn pig-outs to look forward to at the movies.

It is such a gift to be able to escape reality for a few hours in air-conditioned comfort. And now you all know what I will be searching for on Gumtree to give to my husband for Valentine’s Day.

verything was going fine and dandy until I read this: “Middle age is miserable, according to a new economic study which pinpoints 47.2 years old as the moment of peak unhappiness in the developed world.”

Well knock me down with a sledge hammer. The line was a variation on a theme reported across the world following a report by the United States National Bureau of Economic Research.

The problem for me? I am 47.2 – give or take a few numbers after the decimal point.

And this average age of peak life despondency is pretty uniform across the globe, whether you are a businesswoman in Calcutta, a waiter in Chicago or a media advisor in Coolum.

The data across 132 countries found the depression curve is pretty much the same everywhere.

It has raised the question whether or not it’s a genetic response that kicks in as someone approaches their fifth decade on this planet. The simple answer is the experts simply don’t know.

It would be easy for me to jump on the doom and gloom bandwagon. Pity me, pity, PITY ME goddammit!

Look, I could focus on the negative things as I approach 50: a father who still hasn’t spoken a sentence since having a stroke late last year, life seeming so busy that I don’t ever feel like I ever have enough time, or my failure to finish my novel.

But that’s not how I feel. I’m grateful.

Truly grateful.

I’m grateful I have two healthy boys.

I’m grateful I have an interesting and challenging job.

I’m grateful I understand myself a hell of a lot better than when I was 20, 30 or 40.

I’m grateful there are still great books I haven’t read.

I’m grateful I have the most loyal and adorable dog on the planet.

I’m grateful I have a roof over my head, enough money to pay my bills and good friends.

I’m grateful rain has finally come to some of our drought affected farmers.

I’m grateful we have volunteer firefighters protecting people and property.

I’m even grateful my eldest son regularly thrashes me at chess – at least he still wants to play against his dad.

I’m grateful my youngest child writes rap songs and creates comic books.

And I’m grateful the abovementioned study said you start to get happier in your 50s, and by the time you are in your 60s you are getting dangerously close to ecstatic.

So maybe my 11-year old son’s attempt to cheer me up after finding out what I was writing about this week, wasn’t so bad after all.

“You don’t have anything to worry about dad, aren’t you 76 or something?”

And to think everything was going fine and dandy.

The affected change takes place faster than the speed of light, which should not be possible. It only adds to the mystery of quantum entanglement.
