apologise in advance if this week’s cover story leaves you feeling guilty. If it makes you feel better, I can guarantee you aren’t alone (hands up here!). Yet, whatever it takes – guilt, motivation, inspiration – as long as it has a positive effect on your health, then you are winning.

Our feature on the hidden dangers of sugar brought on a guilt-induced pantry clean-out in our home. Mini marshmallows – gone. Leftover Christmas chocolates – gone. The last of the candy canes – you guessed it, gone!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware what sugar can do to one’s body, and of the importance of limiting your intake of processed sugars. But sometimes a blatant reminder is the push you need to get back on track.

In my young days, the sugar bowl was a staple on the dining table. After all, it was also the product that put food on that table, that clothed us, schooled us. This is something I will never forget, and it’s why I can’t help but look at sugar with nostalgia, and a little love. It is the lifeblood of so many Aussie farmers. What I have learnt – and what we hope this week’s story leaves you with – is that a healthy lifestyle comes down to balance. And what better time to start afresh as we continue into the new decade. The story is on page 14.

OUR PLACE The waters of Cotton Tree became a favourite swimming spot for holidaymakers.

This led to the start of surf lifesaving in the area.

The beaches and waterways of Maroochydore became popular areas for outdoor recreation. The increase in visitors and the growing concern for beach safety led to the formation of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) in 1916. Surf life saving developed into both a community service and sporting event. Cotton Tree lagoon was utilised as a training area for the development of life saving skills. The lagoon provided this function up until 1981, when the Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre was built. On Sunday mornings, members of the Maroochydore SLSC would use the lagoon to practise their skills before going to the open beach for surf training.

Towards the end of the 1800s, Maroochydore and Cotton Tree were becoming popular tourist destinations for holidaymakers from local areas such as Buderim, Nambour and the Blackall Range.

The bitter side of sugar There’s nothing like a sugar-laden treat to satisfy one’s sweet tooth, but what’s ‘too much’ sugar and what is it really doing to our bodies?

ugar comes in a variety of forms and if you take a closer look at the ingredients list of many packaged products, you’ll see it’s found its way into many unassuming products.

The Australian Department of Health defines sugar as: “A type of carbohydrate that occurs naturally in foods such as milk and fruit.” This seems fairly straightforward and harmless, so where are the hidden dangers lurking? Introducing ‘added sugar’, ‘intrinsic sugar’ and ‘free sugar’. This is when sugar is added to a food product to provide sweetness or for function reasons.

It’s excess of these types of sugar that, says Sarah Gray, a dietitian at Integrated Wellness Clinic in Mooloolaba, can lead to serious, long-term health problems.

“Excessive free sugars in the diet can overwhelm the body’s supply of insulin, which is a hormone that transports sugar out of the bloodstream,” Ms Gray says. “This can lead to chronic inflammation, which is a driver of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and stroke. Free sugar intake also increases the risk of other health problems such as dental decay.

“We’re aware of studies that link high sugar consumption with a short-term decline in memory and concentration, possibly from spikes and drops in blood sugar levels. Especially if the high-sugar foods or beverages are also low in fats,

protein and dietary fibre.”

When it comes to sugar intake and nutrition for our children, Ms Gray says it’s important to lead by example. “We need to use age-appropriate language to educate children when talking about limiting intake of free sugars. Don’t use sweet foods (or any food) as a reward, or withholding foods as a punishment as this can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food.”

Kirra Morrill, a naturopath at Integrated Wellness Clinic, says when it comes to

lifelong preferences for sweet foods,” Ms Morrill says.

“From a young age, and by the time a child is five, the brain grows to about 90 per cent of that of an adult-sized brain. By that time in their life development stage, early brain development has a lasting impact on a child’s ability to learn and succeed.”

looking after the health of expecting mums, sugar intake in pregnancy is another red flag to watch out for and monitor.

“Too much consumed sugar can increase the likelihood of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth and offspring preference for sweet foods. It can also be linked to insulin resistance and

effects of chemical and processing changes in food production is having on our health.

“Chronic diseases have become epidemics following the changes in food production in the last century,” Ms O’Meara says.

She explains that people should choose farm fresh where possible, leveraging the value of health through nourishing foods

that are grown in nutrient rich soils, and served untainted. “This is so important,” she says. “You simply can’t compare this to foods that are chemically enhanced, heavily processed and laden with synthetic additives and preservatives.

“Reduce your chemical calorie intake, and focus instead on the benefits of real whole foods, that are naturally nutrient rich.

Fighting disease through nutrition and not fuelling it,” Ms O’Meara adds.

Some people think that cutting out sugar completely from their diet is the best option, but as Ms Gray says, our bodies need a balanced diet to function at optimal capacity. “An overall healthier diet with reduced free sugar intake, assists with people’s mental and physical wellbeing.

“People need to be better educated on what is the right type of sugar and the consumption quantity amounts if they are going to successfully manage their health.

“While excess free sugars [such as those found in confectionary, soft drinks and juices] are linked with health problems, this is not true of sugars found in whole foods [intrinsic sugars].

“Studies have shown that intrinsic sugars that are found in fruits, vegetables and unsweetened dairy products don’t have a negative impact on health, as they are found with natural fibre, vitamins and antioxidants,” she adds myweeklypreview.com.au

Spend time making your food at home.

Reduce refined carbohydrates and packaged foods (breakfast cereals, white pasta and cakes) and increase complex carbohydrates, such as sweet potato, basmati brown rice, legumes and quinoa.

Remember, protein is important to stabilise blood sugar and increase feelings of fullness.

Incorporate more fibre, which helps to give a feeling of fullness, without overindulging in calorie-rich foods (think chia seeds, flaxseed powder, nuts and lentils, as well as fruit and vegies with the skin on).

Take realistic steps to reduce your free sugar intake.

Educate children from a young age on good nutrition and lead by example.

As a good general guide to work towards, Ms Gray recommends that it’s best to avoid regular consumption of products that have more than 15 grams of sugar per 100 grams, unless it’s an unsweetened dairy product, or sweetened with fresh fruit. “Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest amount on the label. Avoid products with sugar (or an ingredient ending in ‘ose’), in the top three ingredients,” she says.

Putting this into practise is Sarah Baker, 35, who says while she wasn’t always so health aware, over the years she’s learnt what to consume for optimal health.

“Our pantry has plenty of nuts, grains and pulses, spices and other whole products,” she says. “You won’t find anything processed or packaged. I was

never big on cooking as a young adult, opting for takeaway meals and easy-tomake pasta dishes and the like. But after being diagnosed with IBS when I was 20, I decided to take a closer look at what I was eating.”

More than a decade on, Ms Baker now consumes a diet of healthy, fresh, homemade meals, which she flavours with herbs, spices and oils rather than processed sauces and manufactured alternatives.

“I still have my treats though, which is usually a glass of wine or champagne that I’d choose any day over processed, sugary cakes, biscuits or the like,” she adds. “It’s a lifestyle change and educating yourself on what’s in packaged products, and knowing where salts and sugars can sneak in.

“Granola, sauces and yoghurts might sound like healthy choices, but can often be sugar traps. We often make our own so we know exactly what we’re eating… and cooking can be an enjoyable task if you’re prepared and actually make the time, which can be a challenge but definitely worth it,” Ms Baker adds.

The start of the year is a good time for people to make healthy changes to their diet, which Ms Gray says will be beneficial in the long run.

“First we need to identify where the sugar is coming from and how often you’re consuming these foods and beverages. Then look at ways to reduce these.

“If someone is consuming soft drink a few times a day they should start by diluting it with soda water at increasing concentrations and reduce the frequency over time until soft drink consumption is only occasional (once every few weeks or less). If you dislike water, then they can add flavour with herbal or fruit teas, mint, sliced fruit or lemon,” Ms Gray advises.

“If it is milk chocolate, start by going from a milk to a dark, then a 70 per cent dark then an 80 per cent dark. You will find your intake goes down! Making these changes gradually helps them to become long-term habits as taste buds adjust to lower levels of sweetness over time.

“Cooking can be an enjoyable task if you’re prepared and actually make the time” many people tend to research what are some of the healthy alternatives to sugar, especially for cooking.

“The best alternative is fruit, for instance pureed apple or pear, mashed banana, and dates. Sweet potato is good for adding some sweetness to brownies, cakes and truffles.

For beverages, or where fruit cannot be used, naturally derived sweeteners, such as stevia, monk fruit and xylitol can also be used in moderation,” Ms Gray explains.

She also highlights that honey, rapadura sugar (less refined cane sugar), maple syrup and coconut sugar are all still classified as free sugar.

Ms Morrill recommends that when it comes to being able to take control of sugar consumption for the whole family, “homemade is best, so you know exactly what’s going into it.”

The World Medical Association (WMA) recently announced a new policy statement, calling on all national governments to reduce the affordability of added-sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages through a tax on sugar.

The WMA recommends that the tax revenue collected should be used for health promotion programs that are aimed at reducing obesity, and non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes.

The organisation wants to see a reduction in sugar consumption, compulsory labelling of sugar products by food manufacturers and strict regulation of advertising targeted at children.

WMA president Dr Miguel Jorge says, “We want all governments to restrict the availability of sugarsweetened beverages and products that are highly concentrated with free sugar from educational and healthcare institutions and replace them with healthier alternatives.”

The WMA also wants all national medical associations to advocate for healthy sustainable food with limited free sugar intake that is less than five per cent of the total energy intake. That is around six teaspoons a day.

Dietitian Sarah Gray says if you are concerned about your sugar intake and want to obtain more information for your family, visit your general practitioner or health provider to discuss your diet and health concerns.

Some people may even qualify to have extra support with their doctor by obtaining a chronic disease management plan where you can obtain up to five subsidised visits from a dietitian.

Ms Gray says it’s well worth taking the time to re-evaluate your diet. “Small steps each day to being mindful of how much sugar is consumed, is a step in the right direction to a healthier future for the whole family,” she adds.

Take a trip back to the ’20s There were no traffic jams for holidaymakers heading to the beaches in the 1920s. They arrived by train. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

A

s thousands of holidaymakers claim their patch of the Sunshine Coast for the summer holidays, let’s take a trip back almost a century to 1923.

Rather than the Bruce Highway – which

was more track than highway – becoming one long parking lot, holiday hordes arrived by train. Local roads were dirt or sand tracks and access to the beach settlements meant co-ordinating rail, horse and cart, bus, car, motorboat and even steamer.

But this didn’t stop the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau waxing lyrical in its “tourist guide affording concise information and direction where brief or extended holidays may be spent� in 1923.

Covering “mountain and seaside resorts from Noosa to the Tweed�, the picture it paints of the North Coast is in stark contrast to the Sunshine Coast we know today.

For a start, the hinterland towns – Glass House Mountains, Cooroy, Tewantin, Nambour (“the Metropolis of the North Coast District�), Mapleton, Buderim, Palmwoods, Montville, Landsborough and even Bald Knob took precedence over the beaches.

Riverfront locations were more popular, as swimming in the surf was still relatively new and somewhat risquĂŠ. There had been modesty concerns about swimming in the ocean, which was banned during daylight hours until 1900.

Mooloolaba, which this year celebrates a century since being re-named from Mooloolah Heads, failed to make a mention in 1923, although there were local reports that “in the 1923 New Year, campers were making the most of the Mooloolaba facilities, and enjoyed favourable weather and good fishing�.

A year later, Brisbane’s Daily Mail reported it as being one of the best seaside

resorts in Queensland, “with ideal positions for campers�.

Maroochydore was listed as having “an extensive beach, close to a tea-tree reserve which is famous as a camp colony in summer and holiday-time�. “Dressing rooms, sheds and a lifesaving reel� were also attractions.

At Alexandra Headland, “where many building sites have lately been sold with a view to the formation of a holiday town�, there is “no finer view of beach, river, bay and mountains�. “Already some pretty red-roofed houses have been built and the soil quickly responds to the cultivation of picturesque garden plots. From the higher points of vantage some beautiful coastal scenes are noted – Point Cartwright and the entrance to the Mooloolah River forming a very fine picture indeed,� it reported.

Situated between the Buderim tram terminus and Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland was “best reached by rail to Palmwoods, thence tram to Buderim and thence by conveyance to the Headland (arrangements to be made at Buderim)�.

The guide also notes that “the area to which the designation North Coast more particularly applies is entered at Caboolture�. A century later, that’s just where the 110 kilometre per hour stretch of highway out of the city begins.

The event might not be on until August, but the full festival program is set be announced in March, with presale tickets going on sale that same month. As Australia’s horrific bushfire crisis continues, many of us are left feeling helpless. Here’s what you can do to support those in need.

ith fires still raging around the country, many Sunshine Coast residents are seeking ways to help those in need. And there is no doubt that help is needed. According to the Australian Red Cross, sadly, millions of hectares of land has been burnt and it is estimated that close to 500 million animals have been killed in the blaze.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson (QFES), says, “It’s been a long and challenging bushfire season across Queensland and for our neighbours interstate

who are continuing to battle very difficult conditions. Queenslanders are known for their resilience and generosity in tough times and those wishing to support affected communities are encouraged to donate to the Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland, Lifeline Queensland, RSPCA or GIVIT. “People can stay up-to-date with the latest on the bushfires by following QFES on social media, visiting the QFES website and tuning in to local radio.”

Nationwide, Woolworths has partnered with The Salvation Army Disaster Appeal, which will support communities affected by the devastating bushfires across Australia.

Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer, says, “The Salvos have deployed relief teams to provide food and water, along with emotional and practical support, to emergency services personnel and displaced people as they arrive at evacuation centres.”

Red Cross Queensland state director Garry Page says the organisation has also been overwhelmed by the generosity of Australians.

“Every donation, big or small, is welcome and will go to help our teams give people the support they need.

“The Red Cross ABC NYE donation drive made $8 million. People can continue to donate to our Disaster Relief and Recovery fund.”

Australian comedian Celeste Barber launched a Facebook fundraiser last week and as of Monday it had amassed a whopping $34 million. AAP reports that on Sunday, she announced the funds donated by more than 600,000 people would be shared with fire services in other states, the Red Cross, families of deceased and wildlife carers. “I’m hearing you,” she told her 6.5 million followers.

A

s the bushfire crisis continues, a little ray of sunshine has been working to offer a glimmer of hope for Australia’s devastated wildlife.

Bear, the koala detection dog who first made worldwide headlines in November, has been working with his handlers from the University of the Sunshine Coast to find injured and displaced koalas in fire affected areas in Queensland and interstate.

Bear is one of the detection dogs trained by the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Detection Dogs for Conservation program, launched in 2015, and is sponsored by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

“Working in challenging conditions, Bear and the team have been into a series of fire grounds,” says Rebecca Keeble, IFAW regional director, Oceania. “Because Bear’s sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than

that of humans, Bear has been able to locate both signs of life in the form of fresh scat, koala scratches on trees and a koala. In some instances however, there has been no sign of life – which is devastating. We are very proud of Bear and he is on standby for further deployments.”

Bear shot to global fame when actors Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio shared his story on social media late last year.

The task of locating and treating injured wildlife is becoming increasingly challenging, particularly with injured koalas, who can survive for weeks high up in the treetops of fire-ravaged areas, where they are difficult for the human eye to spot. That’s where Bear comes in.

A beautiful dog with piercing blue eyes and lots of energy, he has worked with the founders of USC’s Detection Dogs for Conservation unit, Dr Celine Frere and Dr Romane Cristescu, for the past four years.

“One of the difficulties with koalas is finding them, so we thought about training a dog that could help us find koalas,” says Dr Frere. “He was a year old when he came to USC. He came from an animal rescue group on the Gold Coast. He was abandoned because he was too high energy. He had an incredible amount of anxiety and compulsive behaviours. He didn’t really care much about human’s attention, he was just like, I want to play, play, play. People obviously thought he was a bit too much.

“He came into our lives and he was appallingly behaved, just extremely anxious. It took us two years of heavy training and rehabilitation to get him to a point where he was pleasant to be around.”

Since the New South Wales and Victorian bushfires, other koala detection dogs have begun to make headlines, but Bear was the one who captured hearts around the world.

“Initially the story of the bushfires and the fact that we knew critical koala habitat was

being impacted grabbed attention,” Dr Frere says. “We predicted a high number of koalas would probably be killed by that. That’s what attracted the media. There were pictures and footage of Bear with lovely red boots – that’s what Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio picked up on. With pictures on Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, people were saying look at this dog at the forefront of bushfires.

That story went everywhere – Europe, the UK, Asia and the US.” Bear is a border collie-koolie cross with the right temperament for this sort of work.

“We work with animal rescue groups and hospitals and try to get koala fur and all the scent that embodies a koala – its fur, scent around the genitals, fresh scats,” says Dr Frere.

“We work with some zoos where we can train him on live koalas. We made sure he doesn’t

He’s not searching for the animal in the tree, he’s using his nose to pinpoint the scent. He is play driven and works for a tennis ball. We show him the tennis ball, he has his jacket and red socks to protect his feet on and he knows he’s going to be working. Only when the scent can be confirmed does he get rewarded.

“I think he acts as an intermediary between the side that’s horrible about the bushfires and the side that provides hope. He’s obviously extremely attractive with his blue eyes – he mesmerises people. I think he provides a message of hope. In the context of climate change, that’s really important.

he year 2019 was generally a happy year for investors, albeit with the exception of those with a large allocation to cash and term deposits. What will 2020 bring?

• GDP – We expect an improvement in GDP, as stabilising house prices drives a partial recovery in construction activity, drags from the drought abate, while interest rate cuts this year and next, as well as the low- to middle-income tax rebates, offer mildly positive consumption effects.

• Inflation – A pick-up to two per cent may occur on the assumption there is no material deterioration in wage growth, the drought adds approximately 0.4ppt to

• Interest rates – The RBA’s language indicates a bias towards easing. We have high conviction of a 25bp cut in February, but additional easing will depend on whether the May federal budget offers stimulus that is strongly supportive of growth.

• Fiscal policy – We expect the May federal budget to be expansionary enough to support the economy, but without threatening the government’s promised return to surplus. Bringing forward phase two and three tax cuts, which are currently slated for 2022 onwards, would have more of an impact, but may not be forthcoming this budget, given there is no pressure from an election, and the government may prefer to use this budget to prove it can deliver sound economic management, rather than be compelled to deplete its firepower without a recession.

• Currency – An active RBA, pursuing further interest rate cuts and potentially introducing QE, will contribute to underperformance in the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar (AUD/USD). Our

expectation is that the AUD/USD will trade towards US66 cents by mid-2020 and US64 cents by calendar year-end.

The valuation of the Australian sharemarket looks stretched, at least relative to earnings trends. The S&P/ ASX200 Index PE multiple has risen above 17x, levels last seen in the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s. To put it another way,

On the other hand, a yield gap valuation, which recognises the lower interest rate backdrop today, suggests that income returns from equities still look attractive compared with other asset classes, which goes some way to explaining the sharemarket’s rise without sustained earnings improvements. Closer inspection

of the equity market performance reaffirms that it has been income and defensive earnings characteristics that have outperformed.

However, there is little evidence to suggest that PE multiples will continue to rise purely because interest rates fall towards zero. In fact, US experience has shown there is a risk that multiples will plateau or fall away as the cash rate nears zero (although we note that dividend-tobond yield gaps in the US are not as wide as they are in Australia).

So, in forming our outlook for the S&P/ASX 200 Index in 2020, we balance out the attractiveness of the S&P/ASX 200 Index’s yield attributes against lacklustre earnings momentum. The Sunshine Coast is making history by taking part in a bid to bring the Olympic Games to our corner of the world.

The idea of making a bid was initiated in February 2019 by the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (COMSEQ) and last month, the Queensland Government became the final tier of government to officially back the bid.

It was the final piece of the puzzle, after the Federal Government was quick to jump on board.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says there will be a number of benefits for the region if the bid is successful. “This would no doubt accelerate our ongoing quest for greater infrastructure investment for the Sunshine Coast region to bring us to a more comparable level to other southeast Queensland regions,” she says.

“It will provide much-needed confidence for the business community to invest in growing and starting new businesses.

“This, along with the predicted 129,000 extra jobs for southeast Queensland in the lead-up to the games, and the anticipated $10 billion cash splash by international tourists in areas like the Gold and Sunshine coasts, the Whitsundays, Far North Queensland and the Outback, will provide a significant injection into our economy.”

Ms Zubrinich says while the financial benefits are undeniable, there is also “the sense of pride and community that cannot be underestimated during an event such as this — both for Sunshine Coast residents and our business community.”

Before June 2019, only cities could make a bid for the international sporting events. But a change in the requirements handed down by the International Olympics Committee officially levelled the playing field and southeast Queensland (SEQ) will go down in history as one of the first regional areas to make a hosting bid.

Cr Jamieson says the Olympic Prefeasibility Analysis Report released by COMSEQ in early 2019 demonstrates the significant infrastructure legacy and economic benefits that could be realised for the Sunshine Coast, SEQ and the state by successfully bidding for and staging the Games. “The key finding from this work was pretty straight forward – a SEQ Games could be successful, if we get our transport infrastructure right first,” he says.

“COMSEQ has invested significant funding, resources and political capital to champion the idea of a regional Olympic and Paralympic Games, with this investment now paying off through bipartisan support across all tiers of government for this bold and ambitious plan.

“We started this journey with one simple promise – that a Games bid can only proceed if it will demonstrably deliver a more liveable region for our residents, with better transport connectivity and a strong economic, cultural and social legacy,” Cr Jamieson adds.

A REAL HOLIDAY

CROSSWORD CRIMES

Sami Muirhead takes a road trip on her way to Daydream Island and discovers the real Australia along the way.

Richard O’Leary takes an orderly approach to doing the daily crossword puzzle, and says there are certain rules one must follow.

I

am on a road trip as I write this with gin and tonic in hand as the kids frolic in the pool at Daydream Island. It is heaven. We bought a cheap package months ago when the island reopened after being decimated by a cyclone. It is absolutely beautiful here, while being just that little bit different to the Coast.

The thing you notice most is that it is just not that simple to duck into the ocean for a swim. Warning signs for stingers in the bluest of waters mean we are actually pretty lucky on the Coast (stinger suits are highly unfashionable).

We drove to Airlie Beach the long way with five of us piled in the car with nine bags; eight bottles of wine; five pillows and 33 songs on our rocking road trip soundtrack ranging from The Wiggles to The Beatles. From the five-year-old to the 46-year-old, everyone had input to result in an hilarious mishmash of tunes.

We played car bingo and eye spy and my kids stopped fighting for the first time this holiday and remembered perhaps it is a big world and they need to stick together.

But the best bits of the trip so far have been the country pubs in the inland towns. A time machine back to when everyone talked to each other, where it is okay to wear casual thongs or dusty cowboy boots.

A place where everyone looks you in the eye when you walk in and says g’day.

The first pub we went to, our kids dangled off the high stools at the bar and

sipped Pasito. I have never introduced them to the Queensland drink I was raised on. They even had straws – arrest me now!

And they listened as the farmers and bushies talked about the nation’s bushfires and called our Prime Minister a drongo (or a colourful version of it). The men and women included us in their chats about drought and cricket and the local raffle prizes. There was plenty of dry Aussie humour and no one sat with their phones checking social media. I yearned for a life I will probably never have; one that includes connections with strangers, because we are all the same at the end of the day.

Fast forward to Daydream Island and the holidaymakers do not make eye contact in the lift. They do not say g’day or tilt their hat in a lovely gesture. I watched at breakfast today and saw tourists ordering omelettes from the hot and sweaty chefs without saying thanks or please. Some customers even just grunted as they pointed to the extra cheese sign. They stood there as another Aussie cooked their omelette and they looked totally miserable.

They had been away from their phones for perhaps three minutes. They had designer slides on their feet and rose gold flash headphones on their ears.

It is paradise and I love having precious island time with my family, but I cannot wait to head home via the long way when our days will revolve around which pubs we will visit for a schnitzel.

ight-down. ‘Book of the mass’. Six letters. And I was stuck, which is not unusual when I do a crossword.

And it’s usually not one word, sometimes three-quarters of the squares remain blank.

That’s what makes finishing one so satisfying. If I completed every puzzle, I’d soon become bored, which is why it’s so important to pick the right one.

I’m rarely able to finish the My Weekly Preview version, but I can solve The New York Times’ Mini Crossword more often than not, but it’s The Australian’s Quick Crossword that’s perfect for me.

Bob Hawke had a similar affection for that crossword, although I don’t think I’ll adopt his approach to tackling the puzzle – chomping on a cigar first thing in the morning is a bit beyond me.

I don’t know if our most popular Prime Minister bought into the theory a daily crossword delays dementia as you get older, but I admit it was the icing on an already scrumptious cake.

Unfortunately, I recently discovered that scientists have dismissed that claim as a myth – ‘Sad or displeased because something has failed to fulfil one’s expectations’ – 12 letters.

Thankfully the challenge is the real driver of my obsession. I love that a clue like ‘balance’ can refer to the noun or the verb, and you have to work out which one applies.

In Friday’s puzzle the answer was ‘poise’.

The word play delights and dismays – a dance of possible and probables with only one destination once the music stops.

I even like when a group of answers must be changed because an early mistake has seen you try and crowbar obtuse words into where obvious ones would have fit better and have the added bonus of being correct.

My method is simple. I attempt all the across clues, and then do the down questions. I think anyone who approaches a crossword any other way should be banned for life.

Of course, there is the old age debate: should you be able to use a dictionary, thesaurus or Google to finish?

In my opinion, only once you’ve admitted to yourself that you have indeed failed on that day. It may help you with future crosswords, but it can’t count as completing the one which has you stumped.

On this Friday I did fail. I just couldn’t get Eight-down. ‘Book of the mass’. But that’s okay, I’ve become quite philosophical about the whole exercise. Over time I will get some of the answers and fail to find others. As long as I don’t miss all of them.

CHILDREN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN FREE CITY MAKERS PROJECT It’s not too late to register your child to participate in the free City Makers event where five- to 12-year-old boys and girls can don the tools and build a city over a threeweek period this month.

The project is a collaboration between the Wildlings Forest School, the Project FORT AWESOME team and the MET at Maroochydore City Centre.

he new Maroochydore City Centre project will continue its strong momentum in 2020 with a hive of major construction activities set to commence early in the year.

Local builder Evans Long has already commenced construction of its $30 million eight-level Foundation Place office complex with 50 per cent already committed to a range of professional services tenants, including a national tenant who will occupy a full floor.

Access to the fastest data connection to Asia is expected to be operational by mid-2020, with the connection of the international subsea cable into the new C BD. SunCentral CEO John Knaggs says he expects to see three new cranes join the current Evans Long crane, with construction set to commence on the project’s first

residential development project along with Holiday Inn Express Hotel, as well as the council’s new city hall building.

Habitat Development Group expects to start on its $83 million two-tower residential and townhome development in the first quarter of 2020. Market Lane comprises 81 spacious apartments elevated across 14 levels along with six Small Office, Home Office (SOHO) townhomes.

Pro-Invest will commence construction of the first hotel in the new city centre in early 2020. Holiday Inn Express & Suites will include 167 rooms, a swimming pool, bar and dining venue, conference and function facilities over nine level as well as ground-level retail space.

The fourth crane should be onsite by mid-2020, when construction commences on

the Sunshine Coast Council’s nine-storey administration building within the CBD. Located on the corner of First Avenue and South Sea Islander Way, the building is expected to accommodate up to 600 council employees.

Mr Knaggs says he is pleased to see all the work undertaken in preparing the 53-hectare site now coming to fruition, with significant developments planned or underway.

“The next 12 months will prove to be another exciting year for the new Maroochydore City Centre project. We are working towards finalising the remaining commercial contracts in stage one and we will progress the registered interest in the Expression Of Interest (EOI) campaign for the balance of land,” Mr Knaggs says.

“Through the shared making of cubbies, roads and playgrounds, and that’s just in week one, we bring play outside and use the act of using tools, planning and interaction as a means of social connection,” Ms Adams says.

This is a free event held from 3.30pm to 7pm each Thursday, Friday and Saturday over three weeks from January 9. Participants can opt in and opt out over the three-week period.

Parents must be in attendance while their children are participating. There will also be live music, and drinks and food from a range of vendors available to purchase.

Ding, ding, here we go again. Nothing fun to report at the moment with the horrible fires tearing Australia apart and a prime minster who seemed more interested in a PR campaign than making any worthy contribution to a dire situation. Enough of that!

As for waves? A few sliders around but nothing amazing. That said, I did witness amongst all the extra people here a certain left-hand point with only three in the water and all were getting some fun rides. Fortune favours the brave – or the person who drives up on the headland and sees what others don’t.
