’m not sure about you, but a lot has happened in my life during the past decade. Marriage, baby, loved ones lost, new friendships formed, a new role in my chosen field.

Life is hectic, time passes quickly, and unless we stop and make a conscious effort it can be easy to forget about all of the laughs we’ve shared, happy tears we have shed and achievements we have made.

On reflection, amongst the lows, there have been many highs – watching my son grow and learn as each new day dawns, sharing a love for travel with my family, unearthing inspiration in the pages of books I had never read before and learning from mentors and my wonderful colleagues here at MWP. As we go into the new year, the team has spent time reflecting on the past decade of magazines and how the product continues to evolve. Still at the core is a passion and mission to deliver quality journalism, community connection and the continued success of local businesses.

And, as we review and grow into 2020, one thing is abundantly clear – we could not do any of this without the support of our readers, advertisers and community leaders. For that, we are thankful.

Collections will take place at the Mooloolaba NYE event, and people are encouraged to help in any way possible. Council has kicked off the campaign with a $10,000 donation to the Rural Crisis Fund.

Delicious food will be available from local street vendors, restaurants and cafes on the Esplanade. The Sea Stage will feature an impressive line-up of live entertainment. The Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe will kick off the performances at 4.30pm, followed by Karlou, Anna & Jordan, Mo’ Swagger and Mufassa & the Pride. From 10pm DJs will deliver beats. New Year’s Eve Mooloolaba is a drug-, alcohol- and glass-free event. Intoxicated people will not be permitted entry. Most New Year’s resolutions are made and quickly forgotten, but if you’re determined to live a happier, healthier life in 2020 and beyond, these resolutions are the ones worth sticking to.

Diet

More than two-thirds of Australians are now overweight or obese according to the National Health Survey (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2017-18). So, many of us will be wanting to shed excess fat and start the new decade off on a heathier note. Most experts say it all starts with diet, with most agreeing weight loss is about 80 per cent determined by what you eat and 20 per cent by how active you are. No amount of exercise is going to undo the effects of a bad diet.

The most common sense piece of diet advice you will ever read comes from Michael Pollan, a US author and journalist whose work explores the socio-cultural impacts of food. After many years of research on the healthiest diets around the world, he said his understanding of optimal nutrition could be summarised as: Eat Food. Not Too Much.

Mostly Plants.

By ‘eat food’ he means eat real food, not processed food. While experts around the world disagree on the perfect diet, all agree that fresh, minimally processed whole foods are best. The ‘eat too much’ part is selfexplanatory, yet many of us overeat out of boredom, emotional disturbances, addiction or just plain old gluttony. Make 2020 the year you reduce your portion sizes, stop going

back for seconds and cut out unnecessary snacking. It will make a world of difference.

Eating mostly plants makes a lot of sense, too. Plant foods provide antioxidants, phytochemicals, fibre, enzymes, prebiotics, probiotics, essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Aim to eat the freshest fruit and vegetables you can buy, as they have more flavour and nutrition. It doesn’t have to be organic. If you buy fresh produce from a farmers’ market, it will mostly likely have been pulled out of the ground only hours before.

If you’re keen to lose weight, there are numerous diet plans doing the rounds: intermittent fasting, paleo, keto, the CSIRO diet, Atkins, veganism or the one most experts vouch for as the healthiest way to drop kilos while getting all the nutrients you need: the Mediterranean diet.

It’s rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, olive oil, seafood, poultry, a moderate amount of dairy and minimal amounts of red meat. Other important elements of the Mediterranean lifestyle are sharing meals with family and friends, enjoying a glass of red wine and being physically active.

According to Harvard Medical School, the Mediterranean diet can help lower cholesterol, aid weight loss, improve rheumatoid arthritis and reduce the risk of dementia, diabetes and cancer.

Alcohol

It’s no secret Australians like a drink. Beer is our favourite tipple, with wine a close second – of the alcohol available in Australia for consumption, 39 per cent is beer, 38.6 per cent is wine, 19.9 per cent is spirits and 2.5 per cent is cider.

There’s nothing wrong with the occasional drink but many of us are overdoing it on a regular basis. Around 16 per cent of Australians consume more than two standard drinks per day (the recommended maximum) and men are more likely to exceed alcohol consumption guidelines than women. However, if women do overindulge, it’s by a larger amount than men (ABS, 2017-2018).

If you’d like to get a handle on your drinking this year, there are some great apps and online support groups available. Hello Sunday Morning is a Sydney organisation founded in 2009 when CEO Chris Raine took a year off drinking. He began blogging about what it was like to wake up without a hangover on a Sunday morning and sparked a movement that now helps people around the world change their drinking habits one day at a time. It has more than 40,000 people on its Facebook page and people can access its Daybreak service through the app or website. This is an anonymous support group where users can set alcohol change

RETHINKING DRINKING: 5 TIPS • Have at least two alcohol-free days a week.

• If you’re having an alcohol craving on a day you have decided not to drink, set a timer on your phone for 20 minutes.

Meditate, go for a walk, listen to music – do anything to distract yourself and see if the craving passes.

• If you like to keep alcohol at home, buy mid-strength beer, low-alcohol wine or mini-bottles of wine.

• Have plenty of delicious alcohol-free alternatives at home.

Sometimes a cold sugar-free lemonade with ice will hit the spot just as well as a beer. For a wine substitute, try elderflower cordial with soda water and ice.

• If you want to quit for good, try reading one of Allen Carr’s Easyway books on quitting alcohol. goals and work with health professionals to achieve them.

This Naked Mind is a great app by US author Annie Grace, an executive who was downing two bottles of wine a night before she became sober and wrote a book of the same name. Ms Grace presents the psychological and neurological components of alcohol use based on the latest science, and reveals the cultural, social, and industry factors that support alcohol dependence.

She posts inspirational videos on Instagram and Facebook and the app has a very supportive community.

There are also numerous community organisations such as Alcoholic Anonymous that can also help. If you think you may have a problem, consult your doctor.

In theory, we all know we need to exercise for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, but in practice, not enough of us do. We know lack of exercise contributes to a higher risk of things like obesity and osteoporosis, but did you know it also contributes to your risk of cancer and diabetes? According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, physical inactivity contributed 10 to 20 per cent of the individual disease burden from diabetes, bowel cancer, uterine cancer, dementia, breast cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke (AIHW, 2019).

The Australian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend children and young people (aged five to 17) accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. The most recent data shows in 2011-12, only 17 per cent of children aged two to five met both the physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines on all seven days. Adults fared a little better, with just over one in two adults (55 per cent) not doing enough exercise.

The rate of insufficient physical activity increases with age. For those over 65, 69 per cent of men and 75 per cent of women were insufficiently active.

If you want to make 2020 the year you get fit again, just about anything that increases your heart rate and strengthens your muscles is good. The key is to choose something you enjoy and that you’ll stick to

– walking, swimming, cycling, gym, yoga and pilates are all great. But if you’re wanting to burn fat and lose weight, is it better to exercise for longer periods more moderately, or shorter more intense bursts that accompany things like high intensity interval training (HIIT)?

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine (June 2019), both are effective, with a slight advantage towards HIIT. British and Brazilian researchers studied 1000 people who participated in interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training (MOD), which was usually walking, jogging, cycling or swimming for about 40 minutes.

The researchers found both the moderate exercisers and the interval trainers achieved a reduction in body fat, however, those doing interval training dropped an average of 3.5 pounds (about 1.6 kilos) of fat versus 2.5 pounds (about 900 grams) for moderate exercisers.

The message was that it’s fine to be flexible with your workout approach. If you prefer to exercise for longer but go a bit easier, that’s fine. If you like going hardcore and fast, do that. The most important thing is to do something regularly.

TIPS FOR REDUCING SEDENTARY BEHAVIOUR • When tidying up, put things away in multiple small trips rather than one big haul.

• Preset the timer on your TV to turn off after an hour to remind you to get up and move more.

• Walk around when talking on your mobile phone.

• Stand up and move during your favourite TV shows.

• Instead of sitting and reading, listen to recorded books while you walk, clean or work in the garden. continued over>

Wellbeing The Australian Psychological Society’s document Stress & Wellbeing: How Australians Are Coping with Life 2015 found Australians are faring worse than they were in 2011 when the survey began, reporting lower levels of wellbeing and workplace wellbeing and higher levels of stress, depression and anxiety symptoms. The majority of Australians (72 per cent) feel stress is having at least some impact on their physical health, while 64 per cent believe it is having an effect on their mental health.

Money, family issues, personal health, trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and issues with the health of loved ones are the biggest causes of stress. Increasingly, social media use and FOMO (fear of missing out) is adding to our stress burden, though many of us turn to social media to relieve stress.

About a quarter of all Australian adults, irrespective of the frequency of their social media use, feel a sense of burnout from the constant connectivity to social media.

5 TIPS FOR MANAGING STRESS 1. Change the way you think about your stressors through cognitive behavioural therapy or mindfulness meditation. You may be able to change the situation that’s causing you stress by dropping some responsibility, relaxing your standards and expectations or delegating.

2. When confronted with a stressor, the central nervous system releases adrenaline and cortisol, which affects the digestive tract, among other physiological changes. Acute stress can kill the appetite, but the release of the hormone cortisol during chronic stress can cause fat and sugar cravings. When you’re

stressed, it’s even more important to increase your intake of vegetables and nutrient-rich foods, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.

3. Spend time in nature. Multiple studies have found that green space improves mood and we Sunny Coasters know there’s nothing like a day at the beach to wash away stress.

4. Get enough sleep. If you have a heavy workload, don’t skimp on sleep to get it all done. Avoid screens at night as the blue light can suppress melatonin, which helps you sleep. Aim for seven to eight hours a night.

5. Stay connected. Numerous studies confirm social support helps alleviate stress and Harvard Medical School reports that volunteering can also help lower stress. A 2012 study in the Journal of Health Psychology found participants who volunteered with some regularity lived longer, but only if their intentions were truly altruistic. In other words, they had to be volunteering to help others, not to make themselves feel better.

The upgrade of Walan Street to four traffic lanes is set to move into the construction stage, after Sunshine Coast Council awarded the construction contract to Hall Contracting. Walan Street is part of the multi-stage Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade of Brisbane Road, and is between Venning Street and Smith Street. This stage of the upgrade is expected to start in February 2020 and be completed in late 2020. Division 4 councillor John Connolly says the upgrade is expected to improve the capability from 13,000 vehicles per day to accommodate the forecast volume of around 20,000 vehicles per day.

HARMONY PARK UPGRADE TO OPEN SOON Construction on the fast-tracked second phase of Harmony’s Grand Linear Park is more than halfway complete and is expected to open at the start of 2020. The new phase of the Grand Linear Park has been designed for Harmony’s smallest adventurers, with the playground catering specifically to toddlers and children as young as two years old. The one-hectare phase will feature a range of innovative play equipment including a treehouse, elevated connected walkways, a slide and a climbing tower, all designed to encourage active play. The real deal While she was back home for Christmas, My Weekly Preview caught up with The Bachelorette’s Angie Kent, who has her feet firmly planted on the ground.

fter a stellar year in which she appeared in two reality TV shows, released her first book and fell in love, the Sunshine Coast’s golden girl Angie Kent is back home to celebrate the holidays with her family and, of course, the man she met on The Bachelorette, Carlin Sterritt.

Contrary to recent rumours, they haven’t broken up. Ms Kent confirms with My Weekly Preview their relationship is going strong.

Mr Sterritt joined in the Kent family Secret Santa and spent Boxing Day at the Kent family home in Alexandra Headland, which was perhaps even more nerve-racking than competing against 20 guys to win over a woman’s heart on national TV. “Boxing Day is usually our big day,” Ms Kent says. “I call it the famous Kent family beer pong day. We usually keep Christmas Day low key and spend it at my aunty Julie’s house, eating and playing outdoor cricket.

“The big one is the Kent Boxing Day, which is wild, with lots of booze and the beer pong championship. Whoever wins gets a trophy – it’s hardcore. Carlin better be up for it because his name will be put in a hat and he’ll have to join in the beer pong championship.”

recently, The Bachelorette, Ms Kent says she’s getting used to her high profile and getting stopped in the street when she wanders around the Sunshine Coast, where she grew up.

“I always call the Sunshine Coast my safe zone,” she says.

“It’s so nice. Even though it’s still quite full-on and everybody comes up to me, it’s not too full-on. People on the Sunshine Coast treat me like I am one of their friends or family.

“I do love being home; everyone is so warm and welcoming. I can walk around with no makeup on, looking like a grub.

Some people don’t even know it’s me because I look like such a grub. It’s fab.

“Carlin and I can’t go out without people secretly filming us and taking photos, but that’s fine.

“We’re both really friendly people. We don’t mind people coming up and having a chat. It can get pretty overwhelming, but if I’m not in a great headspace and feeling really overwhelmed, I just stay home because I never want to go out and not be up for chatting to people.

“Carlin and I met in such an intense way. It’s not your average situation, dating 20 dudes at once and forming all these magical connections.

“Then he was in hiding for three months

and I was out promoting the show. He goes back to normal life and no one knows who he is. Then we get thrown into the real world and everybody gets to judge the hell out of you. Some days it’s really hard, but most of the time it’s fine.”

As for marriage and babies, Ms Kent has too much happening to think about either.

She’s moving back to Sydney in January to take advantage of some exciting new

career opportunities, which she’s not yet able to reveal.

“I’m not a marriage girl,” she says.

“I always said that to the boys on the show. I’m not looking for a husband; I’m looking for a partner to share my life with. If that down the track turned into a husband then sure, but I just want somebody to love

and who loves me. For me and Carlin, it’s just back to basics and we are just a normal couple.”

It’s this genuinely down-to-earth and unpretentious personality that has seen TV viewers around the country warm to Ms Kent. They turned out in droves to hear her speak at Maroochy Surf Club and Harry Hartog Bookseller in Maroochydore last week, where she met fans and signed copies of her new book, If You Don’t Laugh You’ll Cry. In the book she shares her warm-hearted and witty views on love and relationships, mental health, body image and some of the hard-won lessons she’s learnt about life.

“I wrote it in three weeks after I got out of lockdown in the jungle and before I went into lockdown on The Bachelorette,” she says.

“I’ve always loved to write. I was writing ever since I was a little girl. I would always be writing stories and poetry and was always told to keep a diary to express myself and my feelings and all that jazz.

“I studied creative writing in the United States and at Queensland University of Technology. I more dabbled than anything.

When I was approached by Hachette to write a book, they just wanted me to talk – they didn’t realise I could write.

“There was so much going on post-

jungle and so much going on preBachelorette that it was so nice for me to escape and write. It’s not a biography by any means.

“I know I’m only a young gal; I haven’t lived a thousand lives. It’s just life lessons and stories from your best mate, from the gal next door who has seen some stuff. It’s about living your best life, even if you haven’t had everything handed to you.

“People have reached out to me and been really supportive and said they couldn’t put it down.

“They love how raw and honest I am.

“I just want people to know that they are not alone and everybody’s got a story.

Everybody’s story is worth sharing. You’ll never know who you can help.

“I want people to know everybody is struggling and you can get help with certain issues. You can reach out. There’s so much you can do these days to help yourself and I feel like people don’t.

“After reading this, I hope people see that it’s okay to struggle and you need to love yourself, put number one first and just enjoy yourself.”

VILLAGE VISION A GLOBAL FIRST A health and wellness precinct that brings together innovators and providers is to be built in the new Birtinya health precinct, and the visionary project could be a game changer for health professionals around the globe. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

A

collaborative, holistic and innovative approach is behind an Australian first health and wellness precinct that was recently launched on the Sunshine Coast.

Vitality Village aims to disrupt the health sector, deliver substantial cost savings to the national health budget and achieve better outcomes for Australians facing complex health challenges.

Aged and community care provider ComLink is the driving force behind Vitality Village, which aims to tackle the challenging areas of mental health, disability services, aged care, isolation and loneliness.

ComLink CEO Feda Adra says the concept was born from a desire to tackle some of the community’s biggest challenges and create solutions.

“We want to bring together people that think differently,” she says. “Often innovators and entrepreneurs work in silos and although they all want to achieve incredible things, and some of them are already, doing it alone doesn’t create solutions to the big problems.

people dying by suicide on the Sunshine Coast higher than the national average.

“Vitality Village creates the space for innovators, entrepreneurs, not-forprofits, private business and even students to grow together and work towards common causes through the use of a unique Health Animator Engine to tackle health challenges by leveraging the efforts of traditional health entities, industry disruptors and start-ups,” Ms Adra says.

“Our own modelling has found there are substantial government savings that can be achieved, which is great news for taxpayers.”

ComLink has committed $3.5 million of seed funding to the project and has secured $8.4 million funding from Sunshine Coast development identity Ken Reed.

“Ken could’ve invested anywhere and he saw how valuable this Vitality Village vision is. He’s going to become an ambassador for the project. The three levels of government have also been very supportive,” Ms Adra says.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Health Animator Engine model, ‘villagers’ will work collaboratively in the burgeoning Birtinya health precinct to develop creative and game-changing products and services and incubate ideas from concept through to commercialisation.

A development application has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council and with approval, construction will begin early next year with completion within 12 months.

“Before we get disrupted, we need to look at being the disruptor” was conceived just 11 months ago and Ms Adra says it is due to the “incredible ComLink board” that swift progress has been made. “We are looking at business sustainability into the future and we need to innovate to be relevant. Before we get disrupted, we need to look at being the disruptor,” she says.

“For ComLink, this is our way to say we don’t want to do this alone. We want to look at prevention. We deliver amazing service at the

moment, but if we could start tackling prevention, less people will need our services in the future and they will be able to live in their own homes independently for longer.

“Technology is something we should embrace. It shouldn’t be instead of, it should be as well as. If we can collaborate on creating amazing technology to help people live at home for longer and still be able to connect with people with social support through ComLink, we will already be making a big difference.”

121 Care general manager Kym Chomley says the disability services organisation can’t wait to be part of Vitality Village.

“We see this as changing the community to make it a holistic effort, where we care for everyone and support everyone by bringing together a diverse range of services to one spot as well as research and innovation,” Ms Chomley says.

Ms Adra says she has already fielded interest from the US to see if the unique model could be scaled, and there is potential for Vitality Village locations to spread around the globe in the long term.

The Vitality Village complex will be a multi-storey building and include drop-in services, a cafe and open space for events, community gardens and seating and tables for visitors.

t this time of year, it’s always an interesting exercise to make predictions – economic, political and sporting. So, let’s get into it: Global economy – Global growth is maintained at a 2.5 per cent pace, helped by earlier central bank interest rate cuts and businesses restocking inventory from depressed levels. Although no recession is forecast, fears will linger as the cycle ages, while slowing employment and corporate profit growth, as well as fluid trade discussions, will contain exuberance in businesses and households.

Donald Trump will win the 2020 US presidential election.

Global equities – A case for 10 to 15 per cent returns could be made for global equities, but the risks associated with these are currently high, primarily due to the

erratic nature of trade discussions between the US and China, the US and other countries, as well as Brexit. We prefer to wait for tensions to ease, or cheaper valuations to materialise to compensate for the risks.

Australian economy – GDP growth to improve on a partial recovery in construction activity and reduced drags from the drought, while interest rate cuts this year and next, as well as the income tax rebates, offer mildly positive consumption effects. Quantitative easing is also a possibility if there is no significant fiscal stimulus in May’s Federal Budget.

HIS FAVOURITE THINGS

Sami Muirhead has been having an education in the language of the young, and she has a few choice words to say about it.

2019 was a hectic year for Richard O’Leary, but as he looks ahead to 2020 he reflects on the highlights of the year that was.

M

ay the start of 2020 and your vacay be fully lit. May George Clooney slide into your DMs and you recover from your credit card taking a haircut at Christmas.

Have you got absolutely no idea what I am talking about? We have an intern at work and Jarrod is educating me as to how young people speak. ‘Fully lit’ means something wonderful. It has nothing to do with heat or fire. These entertaining and wonderful lessons in pop culture between my 20-year-old friend and myself follow the release of 650 new words into the Oxford English Dictionary that include ‘sesh’ (session) and ‘fabulosity’ (fabulous). ‘Fake news’ (people spreading rubbish via social media that becomes news) is fresh on the list, as are ‘xoxo’ (kisses and hugs pronounced ex oh)and ‘Jedi mind trick’.

Speaking of magic forces from Star Wars, let me expand on what I meant by George Clooney sliding into your DMs. Direct message (DM) is a private chat between you and one person and if someone slides on in there it is a modern way of saying you are flirting via electronic communication. So George sliding into my DMs would be a masterful Jedi mind trick indeed and I would send him many xoxos.

‘Rhoticity’ is also a new word. I was let down to read it is nothing to do with rotisserie and everything to do with a noun that points to some important differences

with dialetics. Blah. There’s a word for you.

In the business world ‘haircut’ was added, which refers not to having a style and blow-dry but losing a fortune in your financial investments. My credit card did not get a trim this holiday season but it was shaved to the point it looks like Bruce Willis or The Rock.

‘Chillax’ is now officially a word to describe relaxing and chilling. ‘Whateves’ was added, which highlights our trend to shorten words in an attempt to make ourselves sound trendy. I am not sure anyone has used the word trendy since 2003. But I still do. Defs totes.

My favourite new word added to the ultimate book of words is ‘simples’. It is used after a statement giving a solution to a problem to indicate something is very simple or straight forward.

At the start of the year, then British Prime minister Theresa May raised eyebrows when answering a question on Brexit. She told an opponent that, ‘if he wants to end uncertainty … then he should vote for the deal. Simples’. Genius! So I should spend the next week eating my body weight in ice-cream and chocolates? Simples.

I

don’t know about you, but this year feels like it has gone on forever, but now it’s nearly over I wonder where all those days have disappeared to.

2019 had more ups and downs for me than usual. Big events just seemed to be happening one after another. Determined to finish on a high I have compiled my list of favourite things over the past 12 months.

For fiction I can’t go past Denis Glover’s The Last Man in Europe, which tells the tale of George Orwell’s final years as he sacrificed his health and then his life to finish 1984.

Although it’s written as a novel, it feels more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary of one of the 20th century’s most influential writers. I don’t think it’s possible to read this book and not pick up Animal Farm or 1984 shortly after, even if you’ve read them many times before like I have.

Ignoring the cultural wars controversy over the author, Dark Emu is my favourite non-fiction book of 2019. If this volume doesn’t get you thinking about Australia’s past, present and future, nothing will.

I’m a pretty clean-living dude these days but I became seriously addicted to podcasts this year. Whether I was driving, painting or mowing lawns I was listening to stories of inspiration, determination and desperation.

Dirty John, Let’s Talk About Sects and Stuff You Should Know all ended up on my playlist, but there’s only one podcast that I really craved, where I refreshed my app many times a day in the hope of a new episode – The Teacher’s Pet. This gripping series dug up a cold case and tried to work out what happened to a devoted mother who just disappeared one night 35 years ago. The show was not only one of the most popular podcasts in Australian history, it also led to an arrest.

My favourite song gong goes to Old Town Road, but not the Lil Nas X version where he is accompanied by Billy Ray Cyrus of Achy Breaky Heart fame – or as he is more commonly called these days, Miley’s dad.

No, the version I liked best was FaceTimed to me at work recently. It featured five junior primary kids singing at the top of their voices for their class concert, accompanied by some of the best dance moves since the Rock Steady Crew. If they keep the group together it may not be too long before I’m referred to as the father of the kid in the middle.

And finally, if you are a Broncos fan you might want to turn away now. My favourite sporting moment was watching my beloved Eels beat Brisbane 58 to nil in the qualifying semi-final. We got flogged by the Storm the following week, but I’ll take what I can get.

I hope your year has had more highs than lows and that 2020 brings you peace, serenity and satisfaction.

IN THE KNOW The brewers at Eumundi Brewery are chasing a song that encapsulates the vibe of their village and the hinterland groove – and they are calling on songwriters to get creative.

Head brewer Chris Sheehan says they are offering more than just a couple of pale ales to the songwriter that delivers the right tune – $10,000 is up for grabs for the winner.

“Eumundi is a pretty special hinterland town. In fact, the tagline for our brews is ‘It’s Pretty Good Here’, and we want to celebrate that with a song that really speaks about why it’s so darn good,” he says. SUNSHINE COAST ACTRESS HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN OVER HOLLYWOOD A Sunshine Coast actress is dusting off her hinterland farm boots for the hills of Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.

Hannah Ryan’s determination and experience in theatre and films has been so well received in the industry, she’s landing roles with top producers and was recently cast as the lead in the Australian series American Eggs, directed by the Mitchell brothers.

Ms Ryan landed her first film lead nine years ago in the movie Spirit, produced by Vivienne Somers.

The 24-year-old actress says she auditioned for the role when she was in Year 10 at Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

“It was a new and challenging experience but it didn’t take long to feel comfortable in front of the film crew,” Ms Ryan says.

“It ignited a fire in my belly to want to continue acting, especially in film and make it my career. I will never forget that experience.”

Dabbling in the art of music, Ms Ryan is also a DJ and has extensive experience in ballet, hip-hop, contemporary dance and tap dance.

The young actress says her love for acting grew substantially when she moved to London and interned at Michael McCabe Productions.

Ms Ryan will hit the ground running when she returns to Los Angeles in January.

She will be auditioning for a role to become a True Love Story series regular at Brat, a digital media network available on YouTube. The role she is hoping to win is the lead’s best friend who is on a journey to find love.

UNDERWATER STRUCTURES BOOST MARINE LIFE

T

he fish population in the soon-tobe-completed first stage waterway in the new Maroochydore city centre project is expected to benefit from the installation of 156 pre-cast concrete habitat structures at the base of the channel.

The modular marine concrete structures, which range from 170 to 1000 kilos each, have been created for the new Maroochydore city centre waterway by Melbourne-based Reef Design Lab. Reef Design Lab director Alex Goad says the larger structures were originally designed for an oyster restoration project in South Australia and the designs have now evolved to suit a range of environments in order to recreate a conducive environment for native estuarine marine species.

“The structures range from 600

millimetres cubed to 1000 millimetres cubed and have a range of overhangs and caves to replicate the types of habitats found in an intertidal estuary such as rocky ledges and logs,” Mr Goad says. “The structures are laid in clusters on the bed of the waterway to create a ‘mini-city’, which enables fish to feed, lay eggs and protect themselves from predators.

“This is a really exciting project, which took quite some time to design and create and I am looking forward to seeing the long-term benefits it provides to both the marine life and the health of the waterway.

I believe this is the first time an estuarine habitat project of this type has been undertaken on the Sunshine Coast and the developers of the Maroochydore city centre project should be congratulated for their

foresight in embracing habitat creation.”

SunCentral Maroochydore development manager Simon Kay says maintaining a healthy and sustainable waterway is a priority in the new city centre project.

“The Corso and promenade precinct will be a landmark feature, which will attract many visitors to the new Maroochydore CBD. It will also serve as a great escape for local residents and community groups as well as office workers looking to get outside to hold meetings and enjoy the local amenity during their breaks.

“A number of strategies have been put in place to protect and enhance the waterway, including a purpose-built weir which will help maintain minimum water levels so that the amenity will not be adversely affected by low or high tides,” Mr Kay says.

An innovative collaborative project between the award-winning Wildlings Forest School, Project Fort Awesome and the Metropolitan (the MET) will see children aged five to 12 years invited to Maroochydore’s best backyard at the MET to build a city over a three-week period this January.

Wildlings Forest School founders Vicci Oliver and Nicki Farrell say the project enables children to create, build, construct and deconstruct to their heart’s content.

“Very few public play spaces in Australia enable children to have control over their environment,” Ms Oliver says. “This project encourages children to move and manipulate parts so they use their creativity and imagination and challenge themselves. Best of all, it is inclusive of all abilities, ages and gender while encouraging co-operative play, which is great for social development.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing what the children create. We are simply providing the time, the tools, space and supervision as well as the resources, which have been kindly donated by Endeavour Foundation. The rest is up to them!”

While the kids are hard at work, parents can relax and enjoy live music, a drink and dinner from a range of food vendors.

This is a free event held from 3.30pm to 7pm each Thursday, Friday and Saturday over a three-week period from January 9. The MET is located on the corner of First Avenue and South Sea Islander Way, Maroochydore.
