M

y family rarely spoke of tradition. We just did what we did, and it was as simple as that. As I have aged I have come to realise that what I previously viewed as habit is in actual fact, tradition.

And, I just can’t let go of our Christmas Day traditions. Christmas would not be the same without an early morning wake up to open presents – my dad, wearing a Santa hat, was always tasked with handing out the presents. With Dad no longer with us, my husband has stepped into this role.

Gift giving is followed by breakfast and then the preparation begins. Mum and I busy ourselves in the kitchen, dishing up roast pork, potato salad, ham with curry sauce, coleslaw, rice salad and fruit platters. There is always a bowl of red and green cocktail onions even though they are hardly touched during the day. My sister-in-law is always charged with making dessert – and she never fails to impress.

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Mum fussing over the oven or hubby and my brother jesting as they peel the prawns. I will be forever grateful for these moments. In the lead-up to Christmas we have spoken with Sunshine Coast residents who hail from different parts of the world about their own special holiday traditions. The story is on page 10.

Among the celebrations, it’s also important to spare a thought for those people who have fallen on tough times. In this edition we feature a story about a great fundraising initiative for our Aussie farmers who continue to battle the drought. The farmers who, with blood, sweat and tears, provide the food that fills our Christmas table. Turn to page 17 to read about the all-important fundraising campaign.

GIFT GIVER Where do you live? At the North Pole, but I visit the Sunshine Coast every year at Christmas time. It’s pretty much a whirlwind visit.

First job? I was a Christian bishop in the ancient Greek maritime city of Myra during the time of the Roman Empire. I’ve always tried to help the sick and needy and give money and gifts to those who needed it most.

What are you currently working on? Just putting the finishing touches on Christmas 2019, making sure the elves get everything wrapped, doing a few Instagram collaborations. I hear Tik Tok is the new platform to reach kids on, so I’m filming a few videos to upload.

My real name is Saint Nicholas but friends call me Nick, Nickster or Big Nick. Most people know me by my professional name, Santa Claus.

I’m the guy with the red suit and the white beard who flies around the world on my sleigh, handing out Christmas gifts to children who have been well behaved all year. I know it sounds a little creepy, but I do know if they’ve been naughty or nice.

If you could change one thing on the Coast what would it be? Fewer swimming pools, more chimneys.

Best day in your life? Is this a trick question? Christmas Day, people!

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? The day the Grinch Stole Christmas. I work my butt off every year and this crazy green character comes along and steals all the Christmas cheer. So not cool.

Your greatest regret? I tried the keto diet one time and I couldn’t eat the biscuits and drink the milk the kids left out for me. Needless to say, I didn’t stick with that one for long.

Favourite song and why? I’m really into Dance Monkey at the moment. I also love carols but if I have to hear Jingle Bells one more time I’ll go nuts. I mean, I haven’t used that one-horse open sleigh in centuries.

Mooloolaba – the Christmas boat parade is awesome.

What are you watching right now? We usually watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at this time of year. Love Chevy Chase. And we’ve just finished watching Game of Thrones – terrible ending!

When was the last time you played sport? Can’t say I’m big on sport, but climbing up and down chimneys all over the world in one night is great for upper body strength and abs. I have a six-pack under this suit.

Best advice you’ve been given? You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

What achievement are you most proud of? Making children happy. I can’t imagine doing anything else, although I’ve contemplated becoming a craft beer brewer. I’ve got the beard for it.

You are happiest when? Just cruising around on my sleigh on Christmas Eve, followed by a year-long Netflix binge.

What frustrates you the most? Politically correct parents who tell their kids I’m not real.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Wake the kids up and tell them I’m real. Boom!

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it?

Collaborate with Elon Musk on an electric sleigh. The reindeers are getting on a bit.

If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything, what would it be? With great power comes great responsibility. Wise words from Ben, Peter Parker’s uncle.

Tea or coffee? I don’t drink tea or coffee but I’m partial to a glass of milk, especially when left out on Christmas Eve by small children. Wouldn’t knock back a coldie left by the parents either – being Santa is thirsty work.

Christmas tales Compiled by Leigh Robshaw

Here in Australia we have an ‘anything goes’ attitude towards Christmas. The classic seafood lunch, preferably eaten outdoors with a cold beer or a glass of bubbly, has become a bit of an Aussie tradition. And Christmas Day wouldn’t be the same without a swim either – whether in the ocean, the pool, a creek or river. We love our decorations, our prawns and our pavlova and most of us go overboard buying gifts.

Not so in other parts of the world, where Christmas is celebrated very differently. We spoke to seven Sunshine Coast residents who hail from afar about the Christmas traditions in their countries of origin. The one common denominator is that everywhere around the world, Christmas is a time for family to get together and celebrate what’s really important in life – food!

Oslo, Norway

Norway Vilde Moheim is an exchange student from Norway who is spending one year in Australia. She lives at Mountain Creek with a local family.

In Norway we have a white Christmas and it’s a big deal. We start celebrating it in November. Every fourth Sunday before Christmas Eve we are celebrating and meeting in the town. We are going around a big Christmas tree, eating Christmas food.

We start to eat Christmas food in October and we start listening to Christmas music in September. One of our Christmas traditions is to eat rice porridge for breakfast with a nut in it. The person who eats the nut wins a gift, like a chocolate. We eat a lot of meat, pork, lamb and turkey.

Around Christmas time we have a tradition where we dress up like small Santas going from house to house singing Christmas carols. We celebrate Christmas all day on the 24th. On the 25th we don’t do anything special.

After we eat our rice porridge on the 24th, we go to church, then we have a big meal. We don’t have a lot of alcohol – this is a big debate in Norway. People say 10 My Weekly Preview | December 20, 2019

adults shouldn’t drink in front of the kids. They want the kids to have a good day and they don’t want them to see their parents intoxicated.

Our decorations are not like American decorations, not those blinking colourful lights. We have small lights everywhere in the street and a lot of Christmas trees everywhere. If you don’t have kids it’s normal to buy a Christmas tree, but if you have kids, it’s normal to take the kids to the woods and get one down. All the family gather together for Christmas and everyone gets gifts. We give very big gifts – people spend a lot.

Every house has a fake Santa that comes into their house about 7pm and gives them gifts.

It’s snowing and dark all the time at that time of year so it’s nice to have the Christmas lights up. It’s actually very nice when you’re sitting inside drinking hot chocolate and it’s snowing outside and you’re sitting in front of the Christmas tree and watching Christmas movies.

I heard in Australia you celebrate Christmas by going to the beach and having a barbecue because it’s warm outside so I will probably be swimming this Christmas. It’s a big change from a Norwegian Christmas.

Zimbabwe

Beatrice Maloney is a naturopath who lives in Maleny with her Australian husband and two children.

For people in Zimbabwe, Christmas is not about gifts, it’s just getting together with family.

A lot of people work in the city but their homestead, where their grandparents and parents live, is in the country. Everybody goes back to their village. It’s about sharing food, spending time with family – that’s what the core of Christmas is. There’s a lot of food, like a Sunday dinner.

Usually we have lots of chicken. We don’t eat chicken every day, usually only on Sundays. Sometimes people kill a goat and that will be the

meat for the festival, depending on how much each household has. Women do all the cooking but if a goat is going to be killed the men will take care of that.

Just before Christmas, everything shuts down. All the shops and businesses in the capital, Harare, shut down for two-and-a-half weeks solid.

People take a long-distance bus to get to their villages if they don’t have a vehicle. It’s quite a journey. Everybody brings something to contribute to the festivities. We make a brew from fermented sorghum called chibuku. A lot of people can’t afford beer or harder stuff.

Sometimes the kids get a present but most Christmases I didn’t get anything. It’s not usually a toy as people aren’t as affluent as here. There are no decorations and it’s not religious.

There are people who are Christian and will go to church but my family never went to church or did Christmas carols.

When I went to school in the city, Harare, I was in the choir and we had a Christmas carols night but in the country it’s not really a thing.

A lot of people in the city are now adopting Santa but if you ask someone in the village about Santa, they don’t get presents so the whole Santa thing falls away. myweeklypreview.com.au

Christmas is a big thing in Mexico. We eat turkey, pork and bacalao (dried cod) for Christmas. Some people do pozole or tamales and punch with fruit. We also serve romaritos with mole. There are lots of decorations and a Christmas tree as well as a nativity. Of course, everyone has a pinata with seven

Christmas carolling is also traditional as groups of people practise their Christmas songs and dances and prepare their handmade musical instruments like tambourines and drums. The carolling can occur as early as September and still be occurring in February. The carollers will go to houses or offices to carol and receive money or gifts. The carolling spirit from Filipinos can be felt all around; some carollers sing to raise funds for the poor, and some just want to experience the Christmas spirit.

Religion and fun are at the core of the enthusiastic Filipino Christmas celebration.

Christmas trees, Christmas lanterns, lights and decorations go up as early as September and are not removed until February.

There are nine pre-dawn consecutive days of religious observance commencing at the dawn of December 16 to December 24 and this is called Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi.

It is a nine-day novena mass. Filipinos have the belief that if you attend the nine days of Simbang Gabi, God shall grant your wish.

86 per cent of the population are Roman Catholic and therefore Christmas carries a high level of religious observance.

In the lead-up to Christmas, there are many parties in schools, offices and the community. The exchanging of gifts at employee Christmas parties and Christmas bonuses are common. The making and displaying of Christmas lanterns are a part of tradition and include lantern-making competitions from recycled materials.

Mexico is very Catholic and Christmas is about family. The tradition is for everyone to arrive at the mother’s house around 10 or 11pm on the 24th. After midnight we open the presents and a big party starts. It is a huge celebration everywhere in the streets with music. Most of the children open a present and then have to go to sleep.

Some people go to church, depending if you’re really Catholic and some people stay home waiting for dinner. Everyone brings something for the Christmas Eve dinner and the mother will have spent all day in the kitchen from morning till night preparing food.

Sisters and brothers help out with the cooking too. After 12 o’clock there is music, dancing and the pinata. Some people keep partying till 10 in the morning and some people party for one or two days. Some people fall asleep and then wake up and heat up the leftover food for lunch. You wake up whenever you can haul your body up.

We are a small country with a big population and the houses are very close, so everyone walks around visiting the neighbours and there’s always food and drinks. It’s a really good time of the year. Everyone is really friendly and relaxed and having a good time.

India

Tanya Dave from Twin Waters is a gerontologist and the founder of I Age Well, which offers advocacy and care services for seniors on the Sunshine Coast.

My family are Anglo-Indians from Chennai in Madras. It’s a tradition that we always go back to India because my grandparents are there. We get together and make all these different Christmas sweets.

We have kulkuls (pastries dipped in sugar), coconut burfi, homemade fruit cake and

Christmas Day is full of festivities where Christmas greetings are exchanged freely to friends and strangers alike in the gathering of the community. Christmas in the Philippines is a series of never-ending street parties or feasts. From every Christmas party buffet table to the great Nochebuena banquet, the food will be overflowing and it’ll be delicious.

The Nochebuena is celebrated on Christmas Eve and is a gathering of family, friends and local community where food and exchanging of gifts are the centre of the celebration.

In keeping with the tradition of giving, Filipinos have their own version of exchanging gifts called Monito Monita. Like Secret Santa in Australia, this is usually done among groups of friends, classmates or office mates.

Christmas time in the Philippines is a very festive occasion where the community gathers and gives what little they have to their family, friends and neighbours. There are many festivities leading up to Christmas Day that bring the community together to celebrate what is a religious and community experience.

These sweets cannot be sampled until after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Once mass is over, everyone goes to one family member’s home and we open the homemade wine and sweets and we sit until the late hours of Christmas morning. People go home about three or four in the morning, then they all come back for lunch. We give presents on Christmas Day, mainly for the children. It’s always little things – nobody goes out buying iPads. It’s just small toys and clothes. In our family we never put an emphasis on presents. It’s more about getting together.

In our family Christmas lunch is coconut rice and pork vindaloo. We are Catholic but our Hindu friends come over for afternoon tea. On Christmas night we play the guitar and have a singalong.

We have Christmas wine, whisky and rum.

Nobody gets drunk, it’s a very family thing, just a happy occasion. We have a Christmas tree and streamers just like here. The one thing that stands out for me is the midnight mass. Everybody is dressed up in their finest.

Koki Mukai works for a civil engineering company in Mooloolaba. He moved to the Sunshine Coast with his wife Kana in May and they have recently had a baby. They live at Peregian Springs.

It is popular for Japanese to eat chicken rather than turkey for Christmas. It is well known that KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) placed many TV advertisements in Christmas a long time ago, which resulted in the popularity of having chicken for Christmas. It is such a commercial reason. As Japanese houses are not big enough to have an oven in their kitchen, people might go to KFC or convenience stores to get pieces of chicken.

If people have an oven in their kitchen, people tend to have a roast chicken.

We have a cake at Christmas. The combination of cake and chicken is now typical Japanese cuisine for Christmas. The

When you go out on the 24th and 25th of December, you can easily see Christmas cake sales with long queues at the supermarket, department store, or even train station, which is a typical Christmas event in Japan. In Australia, people enjoy exchanging gifts with friends and family. Traditionally we do not exchange presents in Japan. Kids just get presents from Santa Claus during the night.

We celebrate the New Year, January 1 gathering with our family and relatives together. We have a long holiday starting from around December 28 to January 3. So, we tend to be busy around Christmas because we need to finish our jobs before New Year holidays. On the other hand, it is a great season for younger generations to spend with not a family but a lover. The night of Christmas Eve is more popular for them to spend their romantic time together than Christmas Day itself.

In Italy, we usually set up the Christmas tree and nativity on the first week of December. That’s when we start filling up the Christmas tree with presents, usually at our grandparents’ house. Everyone has a tree at home but the big one is where the Christmas lunch is going to happen.

At lunchtime it was a tradition in Parma to have boiled water with stale bread and parmesan for lunch on December 24. For dinner we would have a big feast of seafood, prawn cocktails, smoked salmon and octopus salad, and boiled potatoes, parsley and garlic.

We also eat tortellini, like ravioli with spinach and ricotta. We open the Christmas presents on the night of the 24th, about 9.30pm or 10pm. In Italy we start the dinner at 8 o’clock at night. We eat the panetone and we all go to bed. On the 25th that’s when we are allowed to have meat, every region in Italy is different.

For us in Parma we have a massive spread of cold cuts, prosciutto, ham, salami and cheeses to start the Christmas lunch. We have cappelletti, stuffed pasta filled with meat, breadcrumbs and grated parmesan, cooked in chicken stock. We also have anolini, which are absolutely amazing. We are only allowed to have that on Christmas Day. We cook a big piece of chicken with carrot, onion and beef. It has been boiled for so many hours so it’s very tender. We take them out of the stock and we eat the meat with a sauce. It’s very important for families to have no wastage – we eat absolutely everything. To finish we have coffee and liquor, like limoncello.

We sit down from 12.30 for lunch and get up at about five in the afternoon, have a sleep, then go visit people. We don’t really have dinner. Boxing Day doesn’t really exist.

December 24 and 25 are very important for family. All the shops are closed. We used to go to church on the morning of the 25th for half an hour, then we would go and set up the home and start cooking.

Children get two or three presents, nothing big or expensive. People drink a lot of wine but they don’t get drunk. We don’t spend much money on decorations but we spend lots of money on food.

A SWEET MEETING TO REMEMBER It’s not every day that Australian dessert legend Adriano Zumbo gets told his macarons are better than those on offer at McDonalds, but the reality TV sensation was happy to accept the compliment from 13-year-old Connor Creagh.

Connor made headlines when he was crushed by a tree that suddenly sprang back into place after it fell in a severe storm in Coolabunia, in the South Burnett, last year.

He was playing under the root ball of the tree, which was laying flat on the ground after being toppled in a storm the previous day. In a phenomenon no one can explain, the tree suddenly righted itself, trapping Connor underneath from the chest down.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter transported Connor to the Queensland Children’s Hospital for treatment for his broken femur, eight broken ribs, two collapsed lungs and a squashed heart.

While spending three months in hospital recovering and undergoing rehabilitation, Connor found comfort in watching Mr Zumbo’s Netflix show, Zumbo’s Just Desserts. In fact, he devoured the entire season.

When he told RACQ LifeFlight Rescue senior fundraising coordinator Mandy Hentschel of his desire to meet his idol, who has inspired many baking creations since his return home, he had no idea Ms Hentschel would set about making his dream a reality.

Last week, Connor arrived at the Sunshine Coast LifeFlight hangar expecting to “do something with a helicopter” and got an incredible shock when he found Mr Zumbo sitting in the front seat of the helicopter.

Mr Zumbo says he was humbled to hear how his show has had such a profound impact on someone.

“It is very touching and the last thing you expect to hear,” he says.

“It was amazing to meet him. He’s funny and was full of good quotes and he enjoys cooking. He told me about some of the desserts he’s created and he’s doing pretty cool stuff already.

“Oh, and I was glad to hear that my macarons are better than those at Maccas… that was a gold moment. It’s priceless.”

CHRISTMAS MAGIC Sami Muirhead has changed her approach to Christmas to make it more fun, less stressful and full of food and family.

W

hat is your favourite Christmas carol or song? Of course there is a difference.

Silent Night is a carol, whereas Mariah Carey and all her magic of All I Want For Christmas Is You is a Christmas song. My favourite is anything by Michael Bublé or Dean Martin and I am always a sucker for Wham’s Last Christmas.

So are you ready? We will be blasting carols and songs on Christmas Eve with our extended family and doing the traditional hot food with turkey and hams and plum pudding with lashings of brandy custard followed by rum balls and rocky road. We eat and drink like gold medallists at the Olympics. We talk and laugh and play Evil Santa and take pleasure in teasing each other. A true family.

My little ones will leave chocolates, a beer and carrots for Santa and the reindeers. Over the years when it comes to Christmas Day, I have become selfish. I no longer spend the day driving the highway or cooking hot food trying to please all of my wonderful but fractured clan. Some of them do not speak to each other so I used to do about four different home visits.

Nope. You will find me with my husband, my mum and our three young kids at Mooloolaba Beach where for me, the spirit of Christmas soars so high on the Sunshine Coast.

Kids are everywhere with their new boogie boards or sand buckets. The surf lifesavers who are working for free have tinsel and crazy decorations on their hats.

Sometimes they hand out free ice blocks.

A cafe gives out free coffee. And if we are lucky, the weather gods are good to us and the blue sky spreads forever over the

indigo ocean and you have lots of those moments of pinching yourself and just making sighing noises out loud because Mother Nature is so damn impressive.

I had lots of Christmases with just my Mum and my sister growing up and I swore one day I would be surrounded by family and friends at Christmas. My dream has come true. After the beach, we go home and watch Elf and eat leftovers for lunch. We are happy in our bubble.

What is your favourite Christmas movie? Love Actually and Gremlins are my other gems. The rest of the day is spent watching the kids play and thanking our lucky stars for our good fortune. Lots aren’t so lucky and Christmas reinforces tough times. I know that well.

One very good friend is fighting for his life this year in hospital. I have a special Christmas wish for him and his poor wife, who has sat with him for weeks. My best friend is having a baby and our new bub just may come on Christmas day. I have a special wish for them too. And I plan to have a special drink or two with my mum, because so many of my friends are losing their mums and I cannot imagine Christmas without my mum.

So I send a sea of kindness and good will to your family. If you are sad this Christmas with not much hope, I can only tell you to be gentle on yourself. There are better seasons coming for you in the years ahead. This too shall pass.

Merry Christmas everyone. Look for us at the beach. The kids don’t know it yet, but we are getting those ugly Christmas rashies to wear as a family. I know. They are one lucky tribe. Merry Christmas Coasties!

have no idea how I will face the kids on Christmas Day when they haven’t got any presents and Christmas lunch is going to be a Vegemite sanga.”

These are the real and raw words from the father of an Australian farming family. One of 4000 who are receiving assistance from Drought Angels. These families have struggled through seven years of drought conditions and this has been one of the hardest so far to be working on the land.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has declared eight new shires and councils as drought-stricken, taking the total number to 45 regions throughout the state and with farmers already struggling just to pay bills and put food on the table, charity Drought Angels is stepping up their campaigns to bring some Christmas cheer.

The Drought Angels Facebook page already shares the concerns and worries from farming parents who are wondering how they are going to break it to their children that there won’t be any money for presents this year.

Drought Angels co-founder Natasha Johnston and the team of tireless volunteers have kicked into overdrive with the Buy a Farmer a Christmas Lunch campaign and in an interview with the Maitland Mercury, Ms Johnston appealed to people to consider helping this year.

“There is something very wrong when the people who help us put food on our table cannot put food on their own table,” she says.

The campaign encourages people to buy a prepaid Visa card, load money on it and post it to the charity’s Chinchilla headquarters. This will be sent to a farmer in need.

They have a target to provide every farmer with $100 in prepaid gift cards, which will have the added flow-on benefit of providing an injection of spending to small businesses in farming communities, which are also struggling.

“This means these families are going to be able to sit down and eat something together, enjoy the love of a family and draw strength and love from one another for the challenges that still lay ahead,” Ms Johnston says.

“Whether it be a $5 donation or $100,

every cent will help to provide these deserving families with a special Christmas lunch that they can enjoy together.”

IGA stores across the Coast have been on board with a Drought Appeal Australia fundraising campaign for more than a month, enabling Coast residents to buy $2 tokens while shopping to chip in a little bit to Drought Angels and Vinnies, which continues to support Aussies in regional communities through one of the harshest droughts in living memory.

They say from little things, big things grow and White’s IGA co-owner Roz White says they have raised $15,000 across their five stores in just three weeks.

At the time of print, the national tally was well over $388,000, with the White’s IGA Bli Bli store among the top fundraisers in the country out of 1400 stores.

“Currently farming families and communities are on their knees due to one of the worst droughts in living memory,” Mrs White says.

“This national IGA campaign provides an avenue for each of our communities to be involved in supporting and providing assistance to these families who feed us.

“Whether it is $2 or more, collectively, when we act together, we can make a difference.”

The tokens will be available to purchase

until December 29.

Higgins Storm Chasing founder Jeff Higgins recently released his three-month summer rainfall and temperature outlooks and maps and says he has “never seen such a debilitating weather pattern and forecast like it.”

“December in both Queensland and New South Wales are maxed in the red on both maps for well below average rainfall and well above average temperatures,” he says.

“There is no end in sight yet for these horrible drought conditions and things are about to get much worse before they get better.

“There are only some possible glimmers of rainfall hope from January to February onwards, but these will have to be reviewed in the New Year again for changes.

“The only real potential for any decent, widespread rainfall will have to come from a tropical low or cyclone crossing the coast and heading inland. Then they carry the risk of flooding and damage.”

COAST AUTHOR WINS COVETED KINDLE AWARD A talented Sunshine Coast author has won the Official 2019 Kindle Book Review Readers’ Choice Award with a serialised novel published in 10 parts.

Hayley Camille’s serialised novel Avon Calling! (Season 1) won the annual prize, chosen by The Kindle Book Review, an independent book review website that has reviewed Amazon e-books since 2009.

DRIVING – KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY Most of us drive vehicles of one kind or another, and some of us probably shouldn’t.

The trick, writes Russell Hunter, is to recognise when we’ve reached our last red light.

T

here’s no set age that tells us time’s up, that it’s the end of the road as far as the driver’s seat is concerned. But we do need to consider our own safety and that of others.

Queensland’s peak motoring body, the RACQ, has done a mountain of work in the area and has various programs that will assist us to become safer older drivers.

Likewise, many of the established driving schools offer courses tailored to benefit senior drivers.

But none of them can really tell us when

to stop and call it a day.

According to RACQ experts, that’s a decision that should be made by the individual in consultation with a GP. “As we age, our reaction times can become that little bit slower,” a spokesperson says. “Our eyesight may not be what it was, and our hearing is often diminished.”

When those physical and mental changes are minimal, they don’t necessarily mean we have to give up driving – something that many seniors continue to

enjoy and whose quality of life could be severely affected should they have to give it up.

“But it’s something we’ll all have to consider at some stage,” says the RACQ. “And a conversation with your GP is important here. It’s a conversation that has to happen for seniors to feel confident behind the wheel.

“The same conversation could be held with family and close friends – those who have your interest at heart and whose advice you feel you can trust.”

The risk is, of course, that as our physical abilities and nimbleness of mind begin to decline, we can become a danger to ourselves and others.

That doesn’t mean we should hand in our licence at 65. It does mean we need to pay closer attention to driving skills that have so far been a kind of sixth sense.

“That’s where your GP comes in,” says the RACQ. “He or she will be best placed to assess abilities and impairments if any. You don’t want to be at risk of harming yourself and, heaven forbid, others.”

In Queensland there are legal requirements for drivers over the age of 75.

Everyone 75 and over who holds a Queensland driver’s licence must carry a current medical certificate at all times when driving and comply with any stated conditions – you can be fined if you don’t.

If you don’t have access to a printer, ask at your health professional’s surgery if they can download and print the form for you.

You can also get this form from a transport and motoring customer service centre, at a participating QGAP office or at a police station in rural areas.

Complete part one and then ask your health professional to complete part two, including the tear-off medical certificate.

Once completed and signed, tear off the medical certificate portion and carry it with you whenever driving, making sure the review/expiry date can be read.

You must show your medical certificate to a police officer if they request it. Drivers 75 and over are subject to regular medical assessments. This means you must go back to your doctor at least every year. It doesn’t affect the expiry date of your driver’s licence.

If you are turning 75 and hold a current licence, you may receive a letter from Queensland Transport about six weeks before your 75th birthday to let you know you now need a medical certificate if you

55 PLUS want to continue driving. As you get older, says Queensland Transport, how you process information, your vision, and your ability to move, changes. It’s important to know how age affects your driving.

It can become more difficult to change focus and see detail, such as traffic signs and to see objects and obstacles such as pedestrians or people on bicycles.

Recovering from glare such as oncoming headlights or the afternoon sun or adjusting vision between dark and light can take longer and it can also become hard to spot things in your side vision.

Medical conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetes can also affect your vision. It’s important to have your eyes checked regularly, keep the prescription for your glasses up to date and modify your driving patterns. For example, think about limiting or avoiding driving at night or twilight and when it’s raining.

What once were simple things, such as turning your neck to see while reversing, become progressively harder as we age.

This needn’t prevent you from driving (I passed a test at 66, by which time I was finding that head turning movement increasingly difficult) but you do need to be aware of it. And the ageing process will tend to slow your ability to process information and react to it.

When planning a trip, think about whether you are comfortable driving at peak hour, merging onto a busy freeway, changing lanes in traffic, travelling an unfamiliar route and dealing with a busy intersection or roundabout.

You can modify your car to help compensate for age-related changes. For example, installing special wing mirrors to improve your side vision. Use the RACQ self-assessment questionnaire to check your current driving capability.

WHEN TO HANG UP YOUR KEYS Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, surrendered his driving licence after a road accident just before his 98th birthday. He was unhurt but the incident sparked fresh debate about the safety of older drivers.

President of British motoring body the Automobile Association Edmund King said many commentators used high-profile crashes to call for bans or restrictions on older drivers.

Mr King, however, told The New Daily that if driving restrictions based on age and safety were introduced, younger drivers would more likely be restricted.

“The decision to hang up your keys is a tough one, but it should be based on personal advice from your GP and family rather than being based on some arbitrary age,” he said.

Transport accident researchers say there’s no cut-off age for driving.

Professor Barry Watson, from the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety at the Queensland University of Technology, said there was no age when driving became less safe.

“What influences safety is not chronological age but how medically fit they are to drive and that can vary widely from person to person,” he said.

TEETHING PROBLEMS I had to have a back molar extracted recently and was dreading the experience. Actually, the prospect was so terrifying I delayed for 10 months until it became infected and gave me no choice but to face my fears.

So, there I was, a gibbering old woman wailing that I needed a full anesthetic.

My memories, you see, relate to when I had my last molar out which would have been when I was about 10 years old.

There was what I recall to be a large set of pliers involved. These were gripped to the tooth and vigorously wrenched backwards and forwards until the tooth finally gave way and was delivered with a clang into a metal bowl. There was a lot of blood.

It was with this picture clearly in my mind, that I fronted up at the dentist and explained to the nice girl, billed as the clinic’s ‘extraction expert’, that I was terrified.

She was sympathetic and dished out succour and comfort as she calmly explained what she would be doing and gave me every option to call it all off if, as I threatened, I blacked out.

I was warned the needle was coming.

Step one, done. Next, she warned that I might hear a few crunching noises and to signal if I had a problem. Well, there was a slight crunching noise but nothing serious, then she seemed to lose interest so I managed to burble through numb lips, “when’s it coming?”.

Yes. It was already over. Tooth gone. No pain. No blood. No drama. I didn’t feel, see or hear it leave.

She packed the gap, gave me a list of rules to observe for the next few days – and I was fine to drive. That was it.

I have come to realise though, that like many Baby Boomers, I am a victim of 1960s dentistry. Fortunately, the old school of ‘drill and fill’ has been replaced with “let’s wait and see how it goes”.

The black mark on a tooth may not be decay, it may remineralise, it may not be a problem. If it decays further, there’s reason to fill but this could take years.

As one professional pointed out, “that’s why you don’t see dentists driving Porsches anymore”.

I had a mouth full of amalgam by the time I was 10 (which cost me a fortune in time and money to have removed when I was 40) and always believed I had the misfortune of having ‘bad teeth’.

As it turns out, my mother’s diligence in packing me off to the dentist wasn’t doing me any favours. Dentists would drill and fill or extract to solve a problem and many of the generation are now reliant on dentures or have teeth held together by old fillings.

The bigger concern, the dentist tells me, is that members of this generation who still have their teeth, even if they are cobbled together, are heading into nursing homes where oral hygiene is low on the list of jobs to do.

Carers have more things to worry about than making sure teeth are clean.

Luckily, dentistry practices are much more sophisticated and easier now, so if there is a problem, far less pain is involved.

Revolutionary new breast cancer treatment

Hip and knee replacements are some of the most successful operations that orthopaedic surgeons perform. They have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians over the last 20 years.

There have been many advancements in joint replacement surgery over the last few years.

One of the biggest areas of improvement has been a huge focus on rapid recovery.

Rapid recovery requires a team-based, multi-disciplinary approach.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques and modern anaesthetics often allow a patient to begin mobilising within a couple of hours of their surgery, with minimal pain.

While the average length of stay of private patients in hospital is approximately four to five days following joint replacement, rapid recovery techniques will often see patients safely discharged home in less than half that time.

In the end, patients can stay in hospital as long as they feel they need to. In my experience, patients who get home and back to their normal routine more quickly have generally better outcomes.

Radiation therapy for breast cancer has been proven to improve both local disease control and overall survival in patients.

Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) is a technique where you take in a deep breath and hold it while radiation treatment is delivered. We use DIBH for people with left-sided breast cancer or for people with decreased lung function where radiation doses to the lungs may be a concern. When you hold your breath, your chest expands and your heart moves down and away from the radiation field. DIBH is one way to minimise radiation exposure to the heart or lungs.

A team of specialists are required to plan and deliver DIBH, including radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and medical physicists. You will also be supported by a range of other professionals including nurses and allied health practitioners. And you thought a game of cricket decides who gets The Ashes! Summer in Australia is typically associated with sun, surf and cricket. The original Ashes urn, believed to contain the ashes of a burnt cricket bail, is presently in Melbourne, for only the third time in 137 years.

For over a century, Australia and England have competed for the prized urn.

Sadly, there are occasionally far greater and more emotionally charged disputes over ashes of a very different kind – those being the ashes of a loved one following their cremation.

The executor usually arranges the disposal of the deceased’s remains. Where disputes arise, however, courts can be required to decide who should receive the deceased’s ashes.

In some instances, a court has made orders that actually divide the ashes and apportions them between disputing family members. It is a practice that some people find acceptable and others find abhorrent.

Having a properly drawn will can help ensure your remains don’t become the subject of litigation and the battle for the ashes is kept on the sporting field and out of the courtroom.

The recent bushfires are a timely reminder that we always need to be prepared. With fire, unlike a cyclone or flood, there is often less time to plan and prepare for an event or evacuation. If you take regular medication it is essential you are always prepared. The first thing is knowing what medications you take.

Recently my uncle arrived from New Zealand and had forgotten his medications.

He thought that telling me he took one green tablet and two white tablets for his heart would be enough. He now has a written medication list that he keeps in his wallet.
