THRIVING COMMUNITY Following 18 months of collaboration with community representatives and organisations, we proudly launched the Sunshine Coast Community Strategy 2019-2041 – a 20-year blueprint for growing a connected, engaged and inclusive community.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Looking back on this year, 2019 was without doubt one of achievement with important work delivered to support our communities and lay the foundations for our future. Our Sunshine Coast Council has delivered new local facilities, roads and other projects; responded to several hundred thousand customer requests; supported a wide range of events; and implemented programs and partnerships right across the Sunshine Coast – all with a focus on building opportunities for our residents and improving the liveability of our region.

In 2019, 46 volunteer groups contributed an enormous 15,436 hours of their time and skills to helping others, with Justice of the Peace services, one-on-one tech support, literacy tutoring, home library and genealogy support at our Sunshine Coast libraries.

The Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion project continued throughout the year.

BIOSPHERE On behalf of our community, Council developed a nomination for our region to be recognised by UNESCO as an international site of excellence, known as a biosphere reserve.

Following the nomination’s assessment by the State and Federal governments, it will be considered by UNESCO, with an outcome expected in June 2021.

What are you currently working on? The past year I have been writing a book on recovery from anorexia nervosa.

Your family includes… The most amazing friends in the world! Plus, two gorgeous and smart sisters.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Breakfast with Turtles. I wouldn’t want to define my life story based on my past because I’ve got a whole lot of life yet to live and who knows where the future will take me.

Best day in your life? Every day since I recovered from anorexia. I have a million best-day moments a day now that I get a say in what my brain does. I wake up so grateful that I got the help I needed in the end (which was through seeing a clinical hypnotherapist and neuro-linguistic programming practitioner).

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Why was it a turning point? The day I chose a one-way ticket to Mexico over medical school.

I knew in that moment that there was no outside credential or societal approval that was going to grant me the freedom to be me. I realised I had to find that inside myself even if I didn’t yet know how.

Your greatest regret? That I didn’t finish medical school. Do I contradict myself? Yes, that is life.

We all have many parts and I know I’d have been a great doctor, but I also know even if I did follow that path I’d have ended up where I am now.

What are you watching right now and why do you love it? YouTube videos of Richard Bandler (one of the creators of neuro-linguistic programming).

Watching him inspires me to use what I know as I continue to learn, rather than let the need to have it all perfect prevent me from ever starting.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Touch rugby a few weeks ago.

Best advice you’ve been given? One thing which always stood out to me were the words of an elderly man who befriended me on a really long and hot bus ride in Honduras. His wife of 53 years had recently passed away and I remember him saying “when you get to spend time with those you love, be all there”. Which is why if I’m with you, you have all of me.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? I am in love with Point Cartwright. The view as you drive up to the point and walk down the boardwalk under the pandanus palms makes my heart race.

What achievement are you most proud of? That I put in the effort to become someone who lives true to herself. It takes work to look at yourself and take responsibility for your life.

You are happiest when? When I am dancing, laughing and feeling loved with my friends or in the ocean. The ocean has always felt like freedom and been my calm and happy place.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Ask myself why it’s frustrating and do everything I can to change my part in it. If there’s not much I can do there’s always the surf!

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Training others in neuro-linguistics and clinical and medical hypnotherapy to work in Fuelling Success so that more people can be helped.

What is your preference, tea or coffee and how do you have it? Hot chocolate. With extra chocolate and gingernut biscuits!

Tom Petrie made the first official record of Buderim in 1862, when he explored the area to investigate its timber resources. In the following years, timbergetters arrived and commenced operations on Buderim and the surrounding areas. These included Dan Cogill, Robert Pill and the Chambers brothers. A wealth of beech, cedar and pine was hauled by bullock wagon from Buderim to Mooloolah Heads (Mooloolaba), where James Low and William Grigor had established a timber depot for William Pettigrew in 1864. In 1869, government surveyor William Fryar surveyed Buderim into selections. William Guy selected the first block in 1870, followed by Joseph Dixon and Gustav Reibe. As parts of the land were cleared, agricultural interests increased and sugarcane became the main product. In 1876, Mr Dixon and Mr Fielding established the first Mill on Buderim. The Buderim Sugar Co opened a second mill in 1880.

METHOD 1. Place the prawns, 500ml tequila, 4 tbsp sea salt and 500ml of water in a bowl.

Cover and marinate in the fridge for 10 minutes 2. Spread the pineapple slices evenly over a large serving platter. Drizzle ½ cup oil over the pineapple and sprinkle with sea salt.

3. Make the vinaigrette by whisking lime zest and juice with remaining olive oil and tequila. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

4. Drain the prawns, reserving the tequila marinade. Place the marinade and 2 cups of water in a large frying pan and bring to the boil. Add the prawns and simmer for 60 seconds then remove pan from the heat and stand for 10 minutes or until the prawns are just cooked and almost firm.

5. Drain the prawns, discarding the cooking liquid, then allow them to cool.

6. Toss the capsicum, prawns, vinaigrette and parsley in a bowl. Scatter the prawn salad over the pineapple on the serving platter. Garnish with jalapeños and parsley sprigs.

It is also important to keep seafood as cold as possible. It’s best to store larger quantities in an esky between two layers of ice.

Store cooked and fresh seafood separately.

While cooked prawns are the preferred purchase, Mr Heilmann encourages seafood lovers to give green prawns a go.

SEAFOOD EXTRAVAGANZA Nothing says Christmas like fresh seafood straight from the waters off Mooloolaba.

And when it comes to quality, it’s pretty hard to beat the product the Sunshine Coast is known and loved for.

Just ask Gary Heilmann (pictured) who has spent the better part of the past two-and-a-half decades dishing up prawns, fish, crabs and oysters.

Mr Heilmann is the owner of Sunshine Coast wholesale fishery, DeBrett Seafood. Based in Mooloolaba, DeBrett’s supplies product to Japanese, Canadian, European and Australian retailers, including his three other businesses – Fisheries on the Spit, Bridge Seafoods and Noosa Junction Seafood Market.

It’s a fair feat for a man who began his career in banking.

“I left Westpac in 1995 when the country went through a mass recession. I put my hand up and took a redundancy and went to work for a fisherman who had been one of my customers. I helped him build his business down in Tasmania.

“We had some inquiries out of Queensland so we came over here, loved it and decided to move the business here.”

Now the sole owner, Mr Heilmann

purchased the Noosa and Kawana businesses only 18 months ago and is gearing up for a busy holiday season.

He has access to spanner crabs, sand crabs, reef fish, tuna and Mooloolaba’s famous prawns from the trawlers that dock on his wharf on a day-to-day basis.

All of the product is processed on site at DeBrett’s – around 250 tonnes of prawns, 100 tonnes of tuna and 200 tonnes of spanner crab a year.

Mr Heilmann, who sits on the board of the Tropical Tuna Management Advisory Committee, says Sunshine Coasters who purchase local product can rest assured that they are eating sustainably-caught seafood. His businesses alone will sell around 4000 oysters and 10 tonnes of Mooloolaba prawns in the 10 days around Christmas “Most people don’t understand that 99 per cent of the prawns you buy are frozen on the boat. You won’t get fresher than that. They are absolutely perfect.

“We focus on Australian product and people are genuinely supporting the local industry. We’ve got a good product to give to the community, not just us, but all of the local suppliers.”

Internationally-celebrated queen of cooking, Kim McCosker, shares a recipe for a Christmas favourite.

200g white chocolate, broken or chopped, 24 plump, dried apricots, ½ cup pistachios, chopped Line a baking tray with baking paper. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate, stirring every 30 seconds, until nice and smooth.

One at a time, dip the apricots into the melted chocolate, covering only half, and then into the pistachios (if easier just sprinkle with pistachios).

Place on the tray. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes, or until set.

EXPERT TIPS FROM KIM McCOSKER 1. Choose your ham wisely. This year I highly recommend the IGA Naturally Smoked, Bone-in Ham. It’s 100 per cent Australian grown – buying local and Australian is one of the greatest gifts we can give our farmers.

2. Remove the hard, tough skin and any excess fat; just a really thin layer of fat is all I leave.

3. Use a flavourful glaze. I recommend another local product – Buderim Ginger marmalade.

The sweetness of it mixes perfectly with the saltiness of the ham.

4. Decorate. Food is first eaten with the eye, wrap some baking paper or hessian around the knuckle with a pretty ribbon and a posy of fresh herbs. Something so simple, creates something so spectacular.

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 160C and line a large roasting tray with baking paper.

2. Remove outer skin and any excess fat.

3. Using a sharp knife, score the fat into diamond shapes; scoring on an angle one way, then again on an angle the other way.

4. Place the ham in the roasting tray and spoon over half the jar of marmalade (I just use my fingers to pat the marmalade into place) then push the cloves into the corners of each diamond.

5. Bake ham for 1 hour in the lower half of the oven until golden, remove and set aside.

6. When ready to serve, transfer to a large platter surround with plump red cherries and spoon over any yummy syrup in the base of the tray.

Mooloolaba in the 1960s Maroochydore, 1950s

Going up The region’s growing population is nothing new. For more than half a century, migration to the sunbelt kept population growth front and centre on the Sunshine Coast agenda. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

I

n June 1970, the front page of the Sunshine Coast Weekly Advertiser announced the Maroochy Shire town planner’s forecast that there would be 20,000 people in Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba and Buderim by 1990.

It was a staggering suggestion, one so astonishing that to have considered the population might be more than double that would have been sheer lunacy.

The figure was based on the fact that the population of those four centres alone had increased by 30 per cent in the previous decade.

So, by the numbers, in 1971, Australia had a population of 12.76 million, of which 14.3 per cent were Queenslanders. Of those,

56.5 per cent lived in the southeast corner and 6.5 per cent of them lived on the Sunshine Coast.

Two decades later, in 1991, 17.2 per cent of Australia’s 17.3 million people lived in Queensland. Of those, 62 per cent lived in southeast Queensland and 8.7 per cent on the Sunshine Coast.

By any measure, the Sunshine Coast was well and truly holding its own and it was little wonder the catchcry of the 1980s became “build it and they will come” alongside the claim that people were “voting with their feet”.

By 1996, the Sunshine Coast had been growing at a rate well above the national average for more than 30 years and become the 12th largest community in Australia with

a regional population of more than 200,000.

Added to the eye-watering numbers is that the Coast’s population growth was four times the state average in 1981 and 1983, and its population doubled between 1983 and 1990.

It was hard to imagine in 1990 that there would be 150,000 people by the end of the decade, but it had hit 186,000 long before the turn of the millennium.

The whirlwind pace continued and although predictions that the population would reach a critical mass of 250,000 were met with some scepticism, when the Sunshine Coast Regional Council was formed in 2008 (Noosa withdrew six years later) it was already closer to 300,000.

In May 1997, the State Government’s Population Planning, Information and Forecasting Unit reported that from the late 1980s, Maroochy, Caloundra and Noosa had ranked in the top 10 growth areas in Queensland and Noosa was in the top five.

A meeting of 100 businesspeople in Kawana, was asked “how many people have lived here since 1946?” A lone hand went up.

“How many people have lived here since 1960?” Another four hands went up. The point was made – the staggering population

growth was directly attributable to sunbelt migration.

Between 1986 and 1995, more than 24,500 ‘migrants’ settled in Caloundra; 36,500 in Maroochy and 14,000 in Noosa, which doubled its population in less than a decade.

And contrary to popular opinion, it was not the relatively older people pushing up the numbers.

Those in their late twenties or early thirties with a young family were easily the biggest group, and retirees, those in their late fifties and early sixties, ran a poor second.

Property, accommodation, business, industry, infrastructure, employment, social services – every facet of local life and projections for the future – focused on the ever-expanding numbers.

In September 1996, the Queensland University’s Applied Population Research Unit prepared a list of indicators of what resources were needed to supply the incoming population and advised that every 10,000 settlers would require goods and services in the order of: • 3000 to 3600 new dwellings, • 100 to 120 new retail outlets, • 70 to 90 new hospital beds and associated health facilities, • 20 to 25 new medical practitioners including specialists, • 4000 to 4500 new vehicles.

Public infrastructure such as roads, water, waste management, public transport and the airport had to expand at 10 to 15 per cent a year.

Although the rapid growth of previous decades has eased in recent years, we have arrived at the turn of another decade with a population of 346,522, making us the ninth most populous city in Australia.

Try telling that to the old locals who remember dirt roads and now need a GPS to find their way.

The Sunshine Coast Council is acquiring two new properties in Maleny, totalling a combined 24 hectares to build upon existing public land that adjoins the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. The additional properties bring the total council-owned open space in the project area to 65 hectares, with a long-term goal to establish a major ecological parkland for the entire region to enjoy. The purchase was made possible through the council’s strategic land acquisition program, which continues to invest in properties to meet the growing community demand for parks and recreation spaces.

BIG LEAP FOR LOCAL PLAYER HOLIDAY PARK REVAMP NEARS COMPLETION Already fully booked until late January, the Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park is set to once again welcome guests from December 14. The old beach holiday park was demolished in July to make way for a contemporary new facility to ensure it remained a destination of choice for residents and visitors for years to come. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the redevelopment is a $3.8-million investment in one of the Sunshine Coast’s most beautiful beachfront locations. The revamped holiday park has been designed with the industry trend for larger caravans, motorhomes and camping trailers front of mind. The upgraded facility includes 59 large sites, all with improved access, new amenities including a camp kitchen, landscaping and improved connections to the beachside boardwalk. Division four councillor John Connolly says the holiday park is a vibrant part of Mooloolaba and he is excited for guests to start arriving. “The old holiday park was very tired and needed a lot of work, I think this redevelopment is fantastic for the tourism industry and our local economy,” Cr Connolly says.

On the back of what has been a very successful rugby season, Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby player Louis Werchon has been selected to represent the Australian under 18s men’s side to compete at the World School Sevens in Pakuranga, New Zealand. Louis is a Year 11 student who was part of the premiership-winning Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Rugby Union team and has capped off a fantastic season with selection for the Australian Barbarians Schoolboys (XV) earlier in the year. His latest selection in the Australian under 18s men’s side will see him head into camp this weekend to prepare before heading off to New Zealand over the weekend of December 13 and 14.

Caloundra Indoor Stadium will double its seating capacity in a move designed to attract further high-quality sporting events to the precinct.

Sunshine Coast Council is investing $250,000 to construct an additional 500 tiered seats at the stadium – bringing the total tiered seating capacity to 1000. The improvements follow a $380,000 upgrade in August, which added three outdoor netball courts to the precinct. The stadium will be closed until January 16, 2020 to allow construction of the seats and annual floor maintenance works to be carried out.

More lifeguards will patrol beaches during the busy summer period thanks to a Sunshine Coast Council funding injection. An extra lifeguard will be added to each shift at Alexandra Headland, Coolum, Kings Beach, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba main beach. The additional lifeguard patrols will continue until January 28, 2020. Economic Tourism, Events and Sport Councillor Jason O’Pray says council has allocated an additional $236,000 to Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) in the 2019-20 budget to support the extra services. “This additional funding means council is investing a total of $4.84 million in lifeguard services to keep our beaches safe,” Cr O’Pray says. “In 2018-19 our lifeguards kept over eight million beach visitors safe. Dennis Blumenthal, a founding member of this group, with 45 years of service was recently awarded life membership of Coast Guard Caloundra by Commander Roger Pearce. Graeme Sloan was also awarded life membership after serving 44 years. Mr Sloan joined as a volunteer and says training involved much more practical work and less theory than it does now. He progressed through Basic Seamanship to Quartermaster and then from Coxswain to Leading Coxswain. His boat handling skills and seamanship and his local knowledge and willingness and ability to convey them to QF4 boat crews is acknowledged as superior.

NO NEED TO SUFFER IN SILENCE Those who struggle with mental health at this time of year are being encouraged to reach out and ask for help. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

W

ith the festive season upon us, mental health support organisations across the region are preparing to help those who struggle emotionally at this time of year.

A small team of passionate and dedicated people in Caloundra are stepping up to make a difference in changing the perspectives of young people with depression and anxiety through the Comunite’z movement.

Nathan Taylor, his wife Kattisha, Beach Beat general manager Mark Loh, Joakim Wisting of Sports and Spinal, Caloundra High School teacher Marita Loh and Kyeong McPherson of CPL Maroochydore, have banded together to work towards fundraising to develop programs to connect young people to their passions as a suicide prevention initiative.

Mr Taylor is now a SafeTalk and ASIST program ambassador and is a member of the Alliance for Suicide Prevention – Sunshine Coast.

It has been 16 years since Mr Taylor attempted to take his life.

The then 26-year-old was tired from carrying the heavy weight of depression and anxiety that had plagued him for many years

as a young man.

Now aged 42, Mr Taylor says he has experienced the best years of life since that day in 2004, including meeting his wife and becoming a father to three beautiful children.

Going on a personal development journey has allowed Mr Taylor to see the world through a whole new lens and his quest is not only to prevent others from the depths of the struggle he has endured, but also to honour two very special people in his life who have committed suicide in the

past seven years.

They are the son of Mrs Taylor’s cousin, Zak, who heartbreakingly, was just 12 years old when he died by suicide in 2012, and Mr Taylor’s dear friend, who was in his late thirties and died by suicide in 2017.

“I’ve had lived experience on both sides of the fence and in this day and age there is hardly anybody who hasn’t been touched by suicide in some form,” Mr Taylor says.

“For me, my father took off when I was young and my mother was career-focused

and she taught me a lot about working hard, but I bounced between being cared for by my mother and my grandparents, who were incredible people, but the situation meant I had ingrained into my subconscious that I was not worthy of stability and love. I wanted to have that traditional family that I never had,” he says.

“I had got married in 2003, but it was over as quickly as it started and it triggered severe anxiety and depression, taking me to some dark places. I would claw myself out of the pit and then find myself falling in again. After a while, it just felt like too much energy to climb out again.”

Mr Taylor was saved by his stepfather and says he is grateful every day that he was given a second chance at life.

“Everyone walks a different journey, but something shifted inside of me and I rediscovered my passion for motorcycles and it was working in this industry where I met my beautiful wife Kattisha,” he says.

“My road to happiness was found when I embraced my authentic self and did the things that I loved.

“Comunite’z is all about creating programs for young people to connect them to different opportunities to build community

Thompson Institute director Jim Lagopoulos says iHelp was created because when a person needs help for their mental health, it is vital that it be easy to find.

WORTH THE WAIT A Tewantin couple is sharing their fertility story to help and inspire other would-be parents. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

E

very time Kellie Harriden looks into the eyes of her beautiful twins, Bane and Daya, her heart overfills with joy.

They are her long-awaited children, the result of an eight-year process that took its toll emotionally and financially on Kellie and her partner Ian.

But the Tewantin couple wouldn’t change any of it. Kellie says when the couple were ready to start a family, she thought it would happen naturally and without any fuss, but they ended up spending all of their thirties trying to have a baby.

“It really consumes your life,” she says of dealing with infertility.

“At the time, I didn’t know anyone else who had been through what we were going through, so it was such a lonely journey.”

It was this feeling of isolation that prompted Kellie to bare her soul in her book Long-Awaited Child.

Between the pages, she recounts her experiences and emotions of going through many heartbreaking failed rounds of IVF, how she considered becoming a foster carer and also attended apotion seminars, before settling on international surrogacy, which is how Bane and Daya came into their lives.

“IVF is most often a great first step and works for many couples, but there are others like Ian and I who couldn’t actually fall pregnant through this process and there was not an actual reason why,” she says.

“I’m really lucky that Ian is wonderful with researching and he has a lot of patience when it comes to finding things out, or in

“I had an inner determination that I was going to make it happen no matter what” our case, looking for different options. So he was very much a part of this journey alongside me. It is a rollercoaster ride and there were times when I felt I was the stronger one and other times when I

needed him because I was crumbling.”

Kellie says there were many times over the eight years where she felt like giving up on her desire to have a family.

“There were times when I thought, what am I doing to us? It was costing so much money, we felt we had stepped away from any social life as I was constantly on fertility treatment medications. But at the end of the day, I had an inner determination that I was going to make it happen no matter what. I just needed to be very open minded.”

At one stage, the couple left the Sunshine Coast to move to Perth.

Kellie says they felt like they needed a change from what had become a life of fertility treatments, negative pregancy tests and plenty of disappointments.

It was a fresh start and it was here that they began to investigate international surrogacy, which fortuitously is legal in Western Australia.

Ian found a clinic in India and they started the enquiry whereby they would use a surrogate and a donor egg.

“That decision was a really big thing for me,” Kellie admits.

“Never in my life would I have thought my children would not be biologically mine

Bane & Daya, aged four or that I wouldn’t carry them. To be honest it is something that I still have moments with, even though I wouldn’t change anything for the world. I love those two kids more than anything.”

In no time at all, they were they were flying overseas to start the first steps of the process and their decision paid off when their surrogate fell pregnant with twins, a little boy and a girl.

“It was during the trip back to meet our

babies for the first time that we also go to meet the surrogate,” she says.

“We instantly fell in love with our babies, however it was a very emotional goodbye to our surrogate. I will be thankful for the rest of my life for what this selfless lady has given us, our babies who are our whole world.”

Bane and Daya are now six years old and Kellie says they are full of life.

“Bane is one minute older and has a really gentle soul; he’s always happy. Daya is a lot more outgoing and she’s really funny.

I’m proud of both of them,” she says.

Their time as a family hasn’t been all smooth-sailing, with Kellie facing many insensitive comments and questions about whether their children were actually hers due to the difference in their skin colour.

“If I could go back to change things so I could have my babies naturally, I wouldn’t.

Bane and Daya were meant to be our babies.

They know a little about their journey into this world, mostly that they were born in another country and and they were not in my tummy, but in another lady’s. We will teach them more about their story as they get old enough to understand.”

A magical adventure A trip to Melbourne to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the first official Harry Potter stage show â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is an unforgettable experience.

Reviewer: Michael Kramer As a parent, my sole purpose with my son has been to light the fire of his imagination and see where it takes him. Yes, I admit along the way I am guilty of spoiling him from time to time, but my underlying mandate is I will never deny him a book to read and the majority of experiences I put before him cost

very little. Climbing Mount Tibrogargan, mountain biking through bushland, learning music and exposing him to different genres of music, playing in the ocean, making up games, climbing treesâ&#x20AC;¦ you get the idea.

That said, I recently took him to Melbourne to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I can report the whole

experience from start to finish blew him away. From getting up early to make the flight to walking down a funky alley to find our accommodation.

I have seen plays and musicals in London's West End, New York's Broadway and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. So let me start by saying the Harry Potter stage show surpassed them all. The execution of the storyline was mind-bendingly perfect.

Staging it in the circa 1854 Princess Theatre was a stroke of genius.

But imagine for a moment this theatre through a child's eyes? The whole theatre has had a Harry Potter makeover. It felt like you were actually at Hogwarts, as my little buddy pointed out.

The play itself is performed over two nights. Its greatest challenge was to engage the audience with the mystery of magic without the use of CGI video editing. Not only did they achieve this, they hit it out of the park. Right in from of my eyes, actors disappeared and I had no idea where they went! The look of amazement on the children's faces is something you all should experience.

This was a special birthday present and my son's excitement and appreciation was priceless. So set their imaginations on fire without the use of a computer screen.

Hell, you might blow your own melon in the process.

When my dad presented the ticket to me for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child I was beyond excited. I am a Harry Potter fan and it was amazing to be able to go and see the play.

The play is set after the Deathly Hallows when Ron, Harry and Hermione are parents to Hogwarts students. The main characters are Harryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Albus and Dracoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Scorpius. The story is about how some of the students go back in time to save Cedric Digory and they end up messing things up.

Dad and I were not disappointed. My dad has seen plays in London and New York and other famous cities, but he said this play was the best he had ever seen.

Spoiler alert â&#x20AC;&#x201C; my favourite part of the play was when the dementors (who are scary creatures in grey cloaks) fly around the Princess Theatre. It was amazing as you could not see how they were operated and moved above our heads. It made me feel like plays are exciting, interactive experiences.

I would recommend this play to anyone above the age of 10 and below the age of 70.

You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy it. I would recommend it to anyone.

hile investors typically seek capital growth and regular dividend income from their share portfolio, some companies are happy to provide additional benefits to their shareholders. These benefits can take many forms, ranging from cheaper movie tickets, to discounted hotel rooms and even a reduction in the price of residential property. In order to qualify for benefits, a shareholder is typically required to hold a minimum number of shares and in some cases, they need to have held those shares for a minimum period of time.

While the number of companies providing shareholder benefits has fallen over recent years, there is still an interesting group of companies willing to

do so. We have provided a sample of those available below.

Bank of Queensland (BOQ) offers a bonus interest rate of 0.25 per cent on some deposits, up to 1.05 per cent off variable rate lines of credit, reduced overdraft rates and discounts on life insurance policies. As is almost always the case, the bonuses and discounts are based on the standard advertised rates, rather than on any special offers. There is a minimum shareholding requirement of 500 shares.

Blackmores (BKL) shareholders are entitled to buy ‘over the counter’ products directly at a discount of 30 per cent off the recommended retail price. It’s good to care

Aged care and disability support worker Candice Dover had a vision and a plan, and with hard work she made it happen. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

C

aloundra local Candice Dover, 34, is a single mother of two who has achieved extraordinary success in the past three years. She is the founder of Candice Care, a national government-approved, not-for-profit aged care and disability support service provider

that began operations in Caloundra in 2017.

On November 13, she opened Candice’s House at Moffat Beach. The fourth house to open nationwide, it offers people living with a disability, as well as the ageing community, access to boutique respite facilities and personalised services.

“Our business plan was to, in three years, be able to support 50 people with a team of 20,” Ms Dover says. “We’re now supporting 250 people with a team of over 110 staff.”

Not only has she established a flourishing not-for-profit, she is also heavily involved in volunteering in the community and helping out with her children’s sporting activities.

“I work 10- to 12-hour days,” she says.

“Connor is five and Oscar is nine. We’ve gotten really involved with the surf club. I volunteer patrol and my boys come along to that. The boys are great; they come with me to work quite often. They understand the importance of what we do. My nine-year-old can do CPR because of the volunteer work.”

Originally from the Gold Coast, Ms Dover began working in community services during the school holidays when she was 15, helping out in daycare centres that had children with special needs. “From a young age, I’ve always loved kids, but I found going into daycare, kids who had more challenging behaviours seemed to work really well with me.”

After she left school, she returned and worked as the community and cultural liaison officer. “Our family is Aboriginal, so I was helping kids transition from remote communities to the school. My role there was to work with Aboriginal students and students who were at risk of dropping out of school, continue their engagement or find alternative pathways for them. I found it really rewarding.

One of the students I had who was always in trouble and getting suspended went on to be vice captain of the school in Year 12.”

From there, she worked in Melbourne, Moree and Dubbo, before moving back to the Gold Coast. “While I was on the Gold Coast I went back to uni and was working for an amazing company, Red Inc, down in Lismore. They were started by a mum whose child had a disability. Seeing what the team had done down there drove me to want to do something up here.”

After Ms Dover moved to the Sunshine Coast, her brother was coward punched on the Gold Coast and spent time in a brain care unit. “Trying to find the right support for Thom and seeing him in hospital most days, we saw how much it impacted people’s recovery when they had no recovery and no support. I was working in aged care at the time and a gentleman had hit his head and been in hospital for two years because he had no family and nowhere to go.

“A friend of mine said, ‘why don’t you start your own service?’ They pushed me to create a business plan, find an investor and start my own support service so we started as an NDIS provider.”

Candice Care provides the support services while Candice’s House is a sister organisation, providing respite housing. The

“We’re looking at opening two or three houses on the Sunshine Coast. There’s a massive need here and we’re working closely with other organisations to provide support.

We’re opening our first supported independent living space in Caloundra next.”

ayonara 2019! It has been a pretty good year. Not the best ever, but a year I have learned some important stuff that I probably should know by now. As a friend clings to life after being bitten by a mosquito in Bali, I am finally realising life is short and a gift. My goals are the same for the new year that they have been for 30 years: to lose my credit card debt and some weight. They may not happen, but I also have a few new goals.

I plan to read more and cook more every week. I also plan to fit less into every day. I need to say no more often and do less, as my stress levels are getting higher as I get older and I am not as bulletproof as I used to be when it comes to running in the jungle every day. I do not actually mean running in the jungle of course, but this is a cool saying I once heard Ita Buttrose use about work and life and how we choose to live them both together. So with that spirit, I have a few books to recommend over the break if you are winding down.

The first one is called Weekends by Kara Rosenlund. From its fabric cover to the latte sun-drenched images of shells and beaches inside, it is total escapism for dreamers who love nature and summer. This creative soul never lets us down and as a bonus, this little gem has the perfect prawn sandwich recipe.

I was gifted The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50. Once I recovered from the shock (even though I am closer to

this age than most), I settled in to be educated and awakened as to why we often hit a malaise in our forties and then discover new priorities in our fifties that do not revolve around work and money.

There is a book called A Basket By The Door by Sophie Hansen that makes me feel part-Nigella and part-Mother Theresa. It is all about filling old-fashioned baskets for friends who have just had a baby or perhaps just lost a loved one. I have not actually cooked a single thing from it, but I have imagined delivering these homemade baskets of goodness wearing white linen with little children and butterflies following my footsteps. Perhaps I will even have some cherubs floating above me playing the violin.

I can dream. There is something so oldschool about this book that captures the fact you cannot beat home cooking.

My kids are reading the Big Friendly Giant. I am loving reading it again. My best friend is about to have a baby and I have bought their family The Very Hungry Caterpillar because it is the bomb. She wanted me to recommend The Testaments

by Margaret Atwood, which is the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale and also Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton.

My sassy Canberra friend who is ahead of the trends before anyone in Australia says City Of Girls is great and Fleishman Is In Trouble, a book about divorce and how often we are not the most reliable narrators of our own tale.

ess than an hour after my father suffered a stroke at his home in country New South Wales a neighbour dropped-in and said g’day, as he is wont to do once a week or so.

When Dad didn’t answer, the neighbour looked at him more closely and noticed the droop of his mouth. He alerted my mum and she took him straight to hospital.

He arrived just in time to get a treatment, which probably saved his life.

The neighbour was among many people in the street who visited my father in hospital or brought over dishes for my mum. Always with a big smile and the right words.

A lot is said these days about how towns and cities across Australia just don’t have the same community feeling they used to. I don’t buy it.

When I lived in the hinterland, people did tend to keep to themselves. Many of us bought acreage because we liked to have our own space. But if I ever needed an extra pair of hands, or for the chooks to be fed while I was away, there was always someone willing to help.

I’ve discovered that community feeling is even stronger on the coast, where I have just moved.

I don’t know if it’s because we live closer to each other, but neighbours make a point of introducing themselves and looking out for you when you aren’t home.

Case in point. In the first week of

moving in I saw a piece of paper stuck to my front gate when I returned from working in Brisbane.

My first thought was it had to be a complaint – my guess, that Truman had been barking all day while I was in Brisbane.

The only note I’d received while living on acreage was a polite, but pointed missive about my rooster waking them before the sun was up and would I please get rid of it.

So, I was pleasantly surprised when the handwritten message was just alerting me to the fact the gates had been blown open in the high winds of the previous day, and the

A week or so later, I received a call at work asking if I was the owner of Truman.

“Yeeeessss,” I said, not knowing where the conversation was going.

She went on to say she’d found him wandering the street a few doors from mine.

When I explained I’d just moved in she took him back and nailed the loose fence paling where he’d made his escape.

Now to be honest, I don’t really know how my neighbours feel about me, but they sure do love my dog.

NIGHTQUARTER TO OPEN EARLY NEXT YEAR After some initial construction delays, NightQuarter is now set to open in early 2020. The delays have given owners Michelle Christoe and Ian Van der Woude more time to develop exciting new initiatives for the entertainment destination.

Located adjacent to Stockland Birtinya, NightQuarter will feature new installations, new food concepts and new precincts, including Wonder and the Enchanted Garden.

Wonder is an immersive social environment inspired by vintage fairgrounds and will feature a collection of vintage amusements with dodgems, carnival games, arcades and interactive installations, as well as nostalgic fairy floss, caramel apples and dagwood dogs.

The precinct is perfect for family fun, with adults-only sessions after 8pm.

The Enchanted Garden will be a lush and leafy space with interwoven festoon and fairy lights, a cocktail bar and a curated selection of food stallholders with a kaleidoscope of flavours.

The popular Hawker Street will be returning with local Sunshine Coast stallholders creating dishes from around the world, a buzzing atmosphere of street food stallholders, hawkers and a brand-new live music stage.

NightQuarter will have five stages, including NightQuarter Live.

“We want to continue to connect people and create moments of joy,” Ms Christoe says.

“NightQuarter will be a place for the incubation of talent and creativity.

“Creating a culturally inclusive environment and community is at the heart of the development of the space.

“We are working closely with a number of local organisation, artists and community leaders.

“The NightQuarter space is created from recycled materials, from shipping containers to reclaimed timbers to artworks created from salvaged plastics,” she adds.

“The new site will feature a series of artworks created in collaboration with artist Tracie Eaton using reclaimed bubble wrap, cans and plastics.

“Stallholders will use compostable packaging and containers and customers are encouraged to bring their own containers. We will be working with local charity organisation Wishlist and Envirobank to recycle bottles and cans.”

Queensland Air Museum has made its most sizable acquisition just in time for the festive season. The 60-tonne P3 Orion is one of RAAF’s quiet achievers and was used in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.

It is an aircraft capable of land and maritime surveillance as well as search and rescue operations. QAM volunteers are now reassembling the Orion and aim to finish by June 2020. BUDDING CREATIVES ACCEPTED INTO ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM

wo emerging members of the Sunshine Coast creative community have been appointed as artists in residence in Maroochydore City Centre’s new HQ building on Golf Street.

Coolum’s Jacqui Sanderson and Maroochydore’s Tim Birch will work in a dedicated space at HQ, combining their current workload and generating ideas and creative outcomes aligned with the new Maroochydore City Centre.

Maroochydore City Centre activation manager Bronwyn Adams says the inaugural artist residency program was devised to support local creative enterprise and spark ideas and collaborative projects focused on building the identity of the city over the life of the project.

“We are really excited to see what both Jacqui and Tim bring to the project

over the next 12 months, the development of their creative practice and community engagement,” she says.

“We think there are a number of opportunities to highlight their work including exhibitions, workshops or artist talks as well as engaging with various audiences at the MET, where a range of arts and cultural programming including The Refinery will take place within the new Maroochydore City Centre,” Ms Adams says.

Mr Birch says there is a direct link between the art he creates and the local area as most of his work (murals, video and photography) is in the public space and relies on the audience to absorb, interpret and provide feedback.

“As an artist, I believe community is key for personal development and I am keen to ensure the space is open to the community

who wish to share, collaborate or discuss art of any form,” he says.

Ms Sanderson is a visual artist who has exhibited her work locally since 2016 and is studying an undergraduate psychology degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“I am really keen to use the studio space to extend my visual arts practice and to challenge my work with scale, exhibition and community engagement,” she says.

“It’s wonderful that we have a full 12-month timeframe to showcase our creativity within the space. One of the outcomes I would like to achieve through my residency is to have an exhibition of the intersection between my arts practice and my current studies. This will include community engagement and artist talks, whether it be a large public discussion or over a cup of coffee.”

More than 100 budding creative entrepreneurs recently descended at the MET in the new Maroochydore City Centre to learn how to transform their idea into a sustainable business.

As part of The Refinery creative incubator, How to Actually Start Your Business was a free workshop, facilitated by Kay Langford of StartUp Creative, offering practical step-by-step advice on exactly where to start to turn a business dream into a reality.

A former coast local, Ms Langford’s business coaching has taken her around the globe, helping to launch many start-ups to the next level, as well as her own successful podcast, magazine and upcoming book.

Participants were invited to bring an idea for a business which they would like to turn into reality.

They left with a strong game plan, resilient mindset and a notepad full of tips and tricks to get started straight away.

The Refinery Sunshine Coast is a free 10-week program helping people turn ideas into sustainable businesses and connecting creatives with inspiring mentors like Heidi Middleton, Ben Johnston, Timothy O’Brien and Peta Ellis.

In 2019, Maroochydore City Centre was the catalyst space for 15 creative businesses with The Refinery’s inaugural cohort and this is set to continue with a line-up of Refinery events, mentors and a new cohort taking up residence in 2020. I have no good news for you regarding the surf. It will be crap closely followed by more crap with a sprinkle of crap.

Pipeline Masters has started and it will be interesting who will be crowned world champion. If Medina loses it will all come down to one brain fart moment when he interfered in a heat last contest. If anyone who has surfed through Indo will know, most Brazilian surfers have no regard for anyone in the surf except themselves (in my opinion). So maybe, just maybe Jordy Smith will win! There are five surfers in contention and all will freaked out if they score Mr Slater and John John in their heat.
