FROM THE EDITOR

I

t wasn’t planned, but we found ourselves unofficially celebrating the start of summer earlier this week. It was Sunday afternoon as my family sat under the shade of a large bottle brush tree in my mum’s backyard. My son was laughing with delight as my husband chased him with the garden hose, and they both ended up splashing into the children’s pool that was filled to the brim, bright green grass off-cuts swirling on its surface. The swing creaked as it swayed back and forth in the light breeze, and parrots provided a pretty soundtrack. It was great while it lasted, before the storm clouds rolled in. This is why I love summer in Queensland – it’s just so Australian. Family, friends, running under the sprinkler, fish and chips, mornings at the beach. It really doesn’t get much better. This edition we are kicking off summer by sharing some of our favourite ways to spend the warm days here on the Sunshine Coast. From picking up fresh produce at the local markets, to catching a wave or swimming under a waterfall, there is something for everyone. Turn to page eight for the feature. With Christmas only weeks away, we also share our love for holiday decorating in the four-page My home editorial section. But be warned, festive fever can be contagious – just ask Sami Muirhead, who shares her thoughts in this week’s column, on page 30. Until next week, happy reading.

In 1981, what started out as a friendship, catapulted two adolescents to worldwide pop domination. While Andrew Ridgeley may have appeared to have stood in George Michael’s shadow during the Wham! years, he always stood at the heart of the band. In this anticipated retelling of life as one half of the iconic duo, Andrew reveals the truth behind the triumphs, heartbreaks and friendship with George. We have a copy to give away.

OUR PLACE

It takes 20 seconds for a red blood cell to circulate your entire body.

Potts Point was the name first given to the rocky headland between the estuaries of the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers because John Potts, William Pettigrew’s overseer, resided there from 1880 to ’90. The area formed part of Mr Pettigrew’s 330-acre property. It was purchased in 1864 in the first land sale in the Maroochy District and became his base during the 30 years he operated in the timber industry.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK “I didn’t go to school for a full year until I was 12. In the summer I was a wild child in the woods, with no shoes, and in the fall it was back to the city, shoe shops and school.” – Margaret Atwood, author, The Handmaid’s Tale

Twelve years after Olivia Newton-John became a household name for her performance in the smash hit Grease, she starred in a little TV movie called A Mom for Christmas. In classic Hallmark style, the film, which marked Ms Newton-John’s first screen appearance in seven years, is cheesy, heartfelt and oh so festive. And, we love it!

THIS MONTH cember 6 e D IN HISTORY 1941 – US President Franklin D Roosevelt appeals for peace to Japan’s Emperor Hirohito, one day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. 2006 – Australia’s federal parliament votes to overturn a ban on human embryo cloning in a rare conscience vote. 2013 – Qantas announces at least 1000 job cuts after forecasting a $300 million half-yearly loss. 2018 – Queensland’s heatwave results in 44.6 degree heat in the Top End. – AAP

The area was fenced as a paddock for the bullocks used to haul logs from Cotton Tree across Potts Point to the timber depot at Mooloolah Heads (later Mooloolaba). Pettigrew built his house ‘Coolaluthin’ and his overseer’s house ‘Wongotha’ on the Headland. He established a small farm in 1867 and experimented with growing sugarcane. A small store opened between the two houses to supply the basic needs of timbergetters and early settlers. In 1903, Thomas O’Connor purchased all of Pettigrew’s land at both Maroochydore and Mooloolaba. He subdivided and sold allotments along the oceanfront and Buderim Road in August 1915. At this time, O’Connor renamed the area Alexandra Headland in honour of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward Vll. SOURCE: EXCERPT TAKEN FROM HERITAGE.SUNSHINECOAST.QLD.GOV.AU

COVER STORY

Dive into summer Summer is here, which means there are plenty of opportunities to get outside, get healthy and connect with family and friends. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane has discovered there are endless opportunities for fun, fitness and food in our region.

Get outside

L

eon Stensholm knows a thing or two about how to keep fit, but he says there is a simple rule that everyone can follow to instantly boost their health, even if they are ‘allergic’ to the gym. “Put the phone and tablet down and walk out your front door,” he says. Mr Stensholm, who owns Body by Leon, is a world-champion natural body builder, nutritionist and author. He says health and fitness has become overcomplicated for many, but the reality is the tried and tested

8 My Weekly Preview | December 6, 2019

08.indd 1

concepts of moving your body and eating fruits and vegetables remain true today. “Parents are busy these days, there’s no doubt, but everyone needs to get moving,” he says. “The thing is, whether you are heading down to the park, swimming or walking along the beach, taking a picnic on a bushwalk, they are all exercise and they also connect and bring families closer together. “Kids are naturally full of energy and I often see that it’s tired parents who put the brakes on. I’d like to see more parents leading from the front.” Mr Stensholm says his coaching largely revolves around getting people outdoors and moving. “It’s amazing that you will have weight loss and lose body fat while exercising, but more importantly it gets you into the fresh air, it clears your head and helps you to become a better person mentally,” he says. Here are Mr Stensholm’s top fitness tips: • Start simply, by getting out the door. Ride your bikes or walk instead of taking the car. • Take a leaf out of your children’s books and re-learn how to have fun chasing, dancing and doing other activities that are exercise in disguise. • No matter the time of day, get some physical activity in when you can. Mornings are good because you don’t come up with excuses during the day as to why you can’t exercise. If you can get your exercise done early, you will be on fire for the rest of your day.

Hit the beach

“Parents are busy these days, there’s no doubt, but everyone needs to get moving” Leon Stensholm

• You don’t have to go cold turkey on cutting out unhealthy foods. Start by simply minimising dead calories, like sugary drinks and excess butter. This will naturally create a calorie deficit. • Keep things simple. Do what people have been speaking about for 55 years – eat clean whole foods with lots of fruit, vegetables and meat (if you’re not a vegetarian) and exercise daily. It seems basic, but it’s the most effective system.

Up for a surf? Try Kings or Moffats. Taking your pooch for a walk? Head to Point Cartwright Reserve. Dreaming of white sand, blue waves and peace and quiet? Shelly Beach and Third Bay are our go-to spots. Mooloolaba Spit, Golden Beach, Cotton Tree and Currimundi Lake (pictured) are perfect for families. myweeklypreview.com.au

ummer is definitely the season for the most delicious of fruits and vegetables. Drive along the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to Gardners Falls at Maleny nestled along Obi Obi Creek. It is just a short walk along the creek bed, where you might be lucky enough to spot a platypus on quieter days. You can choose from a number of shallower swimming holes along the walk, or continue to the end of the track to jump into the swimming hole at the bottom of the falls. The surrounds provide plenty of spots for picnics and there is even a rope swing for the more adventurous.

Artists Cascades Artists Cascades is nestled in the Conondale National Park just outside Kenilworth. Visiting this swimming hole is more of a day trip, with an 11-kilometre walk to get to the falls. This keeps crowds to a minimum, which makes for a peaceful day out. The track itself is full of hidden gems, with the entrance to an old gold mine dating back to the 1920s in the hillside and also the controversial Andy Goldsworthy artwork, the Strangler Cairn.

Kondalilla Falls Serenity Falls Only a short walk through the Buderim Forest Park leads you to the stunning Serenity Falls. The water is always cool, there is plenty of shade and you can take a picnic and set up for the day, taking in the incredible natural surroundings. If you don’t want to get wet, there are plenty of places to perch, including a nearby bridge, where you’ll have an beautiful view of the falls and the swimming hole.

A little further afield, in the scenic Blackall Range, you will find Kondalilla National Park. Here, you will find a walking track to the falls the park is named after, where Skene Creek drops 90 metres into the rainforest valley below. From the car park, walk 100-metres downhill with steps to a large grassed picnic area with barbecues, picnic tables and toilets. The Picnic Creek circuit will lead you to a cool rock pool at the top of the falls and the Kondalilla Falls circuit will take you to the main attraction.

UNIQUE FESTIVAL SET TO THRILL AGAIN IN 2020 The extraordinary creative talent of artists from across Australia and the world are set to return to the Sunshine Coast for the Australian Wearable Art Festival on May 2, 2020 at Venue 114. The 2019 event received an overwhelmingly positive response with a sold-out show and expressions of interest from artists for the 2020 festival have already doubled this year to more than 60. Event curator Wendy Roe says the high calibre of the artists, the style of artwork as well as the intimate connection with the audience has been an important part of what makes this festival so intriguing. “The festival is a fusion of high-end fashion with the sculptural world of art 2019 Overall Winner – Amaterasu by Jodie Whittaker where Gaultier meets Picasso,” she says. The 2020 event will have four main categories as part of both the afternoon and evening gala event – which include Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable. There are also additional prizes for Haute Couture, Headpiece, Emerging Artist and best tertiary and secondary student pieces. To buy tickets or find out more, visit australianwearableart.com.au.

NEW SUPPORT GROUP FOR YOUNG ADULTS Bloomhill’s newest support group is meeting a very specific need. The young adult support group is a place for people aged from their 20s to 40s with cancer to meet and share experience and support. Bloomhill staff members Kirsty, a nurse, and Ryan, an exercise physiologist, (both pictured) started the group as young adults in this age group have specific concerns when diagnosed with cancer, including finding life partners and starting families. The group is open to anyone with cancer in that age group at any stage of disease. The group meets at Bloomhill on the second Monday of each month. Contact 5445 5794 for more information.

Fourteen University of the Sunshine Coast research academics and staff have joined the largest space industry research collaboration in Australia’s history, worth $245 million over the next seven years. Senior Lecturer in Geospatial Analysis Dr Sanjeev Srivastava is leading USC’s contributions to the SmartSat CRC (Smart Satellite Cooperative Research Centre) after assisting in its development. The new CRC is a consortium of universities and research organisations, partnered with industry funded by the government to increase the country’s capacity to harness space technology and create high-tech businesses, exports and jobs. Target areas are mining, agriculture, transport and logistics, defence and telecommunications needs.

VITALITY VILLAGE TO BE LAUNCHED AT VENUE 114 ComLink’s new and innovative project to invent the future of health and wellbeing, Vitality Village, is being launched on December 10 at Venue 114. The massive new community services hub includes almost 4000 square metres of commercial space for ComLink, as well as a food and beverage outlet and about 720 square metres of healthcare covering a range of ancillary services ComLink offers to clients. The village will be located in the Kawana Health Precinct. ComLink CEO Feda Adra says the new facility is anticipated to be open as early as December 2020.

A NEW LIFE BEGINS FOR STEPS GRADUATES

SPORTS STARS INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME Excitement and a few tears of joy are being shed at STEPS Pathways College as boarding student Morgan McCarthy moves out of Murphy House and into his own apartment with friend and fellow student Ariana Nioa (both pictured). Moving into a first apartment is a thrilling and memorable time for anyone, but it is a particularly poignant moment for Morgan, his family and the STEPS Pathways College team, who have now successfully graduated their entire first cohort of students into fully independent living. Morgan was one of the original cohort who started at STEPS Pathways College when it opened in 2016. The Caloundra-based college is a community labour of love, where young people with a disability are taught skills for independence and the opportunity to live a life of their own design. Boarding students are accommodated on campus in a modern apartment complex called Murphy House. STEPS managing director Carmel Crouch says it’s a proud moment, knowing the entire first cohort of STEPS Pathways students are now living independently.

The Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame has welcomed its two newest members – Brittany Elmslie (pictured) and Steven Meredith. The duo join the likes of Mal Meninga, Pat Rafter, Lisa Curry, Grant Kenny, Ian Baker Finch, Melanie Wright (Schlanger), Chris Vermeulen, Gary Elkerton, Ray and Denise Boyd, and Alana Quake (Boyd) as inductees. Ms Elmslie was recognised for her Olympic swimming achievements and Mr Meredith for surf lifesaving achievements. The ceremony also featured the presentation of two Certificate of Merit awards to Ian Grant (water skiing and soccer) and Daphne Bickle (softball).

The Dock Mooloolaba and local musicians have raised more than $6000 for IFYS Foster Care just four months after forming Musos 4 Mates. The brainchild of The Dock Mooloolaba owner Jared Hart and musician and friend John Veloso, the concept of Musos 4 Mates is simple – musicians coming together to donate their time, with The Dock Mooloolaba providing the venue and local breweries and businesses donating kegs of beer to be sold and prizes to be raffled. Following the second fundraising event, they have netted more than $6700 for IFYS Foster Care.

ELECTRIC CHARGING STATION A GAME CHANGER A game-changing highway charging station, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, has been installed in the corridor between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Built and operated by Evie Networks, the ultra-fast charging station at Coochin Creek on the Bruce Highway, complements the network of 18 electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers installed in cities up the coast by the Queensland Government. This is the first in Evie’s Australia-wide network of 42 stations, due to be rolled out over the next two years. Manufactured by Brisbane company Tritium, the station’s 350-kilowatt chargers offer both Japanese and European plugs and are the first of their kind globally, catering for all available EV models.

PEACE’S PROJECT A GAME-CHANGER FOR KIDS Netballer Peace Proscovia is on a mission to send much-needed sports equipment to Ugandan children and teenagers. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

S

unshine Coast Lightning goal shooter Peace Proscovia has been spearheading a campaign to collect second-hand sports shoes, clothing and equipment to send back to her homeland of Uganda to help children and teenagers reach their sporting potential. Ms Proscovia has received overwhelming support from the Sunshine Coast community and is now ready to transport the donated gear to where it will have a life-changing effect. However, she suffered a blow when she discovered the cost of shipping the goods to Africa would be in the vicinity of $7000. She is running a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds, with $4140 raised at the time of writing. “We have over 500 kilograms of equipment to ship, says Ms Proscovia. “This sporting equipment will change lives. It will provide hope to these children and make them see the world in a brighter way. The people in Uganda cannot afford even basic sports shoes and clothes and this will help them play sport, become healthier and lead better lives. “I’m doing this because I feel for the vulnerable people. LOCAL NEWS barefoot on gravel. I had no skirt or dress or training equipment. The balls were not proper balls, we didn’t have proper netball rings. The rings we used were made out of sticks. My legs have so many scars from falling while playing netball. “Uganda is divided into four regions,” Ms Proscovia adds. “The equipment isn’t going to my village but to all the different areas of Uganda. A bit of it will go there but at least if I can distribute it to all the four regions, that would be wonderful.” Ms Proscovia first began playing netball in 2002 at the age of 12 and began competing seriously at the age of 16. Now 30, she is the captain of the Ugandan national team and before joining the Lightning was a member of the Loughborough Lightning team in the Netball Superleague in the United Kingdom. Based in Maroochydore, she has just completed her first year of a three-year contract with the Lightning. “The first year with the Lightning was amazing,” she says. “At first I thought I couldn’t perform well. When I looked at the profile of the players in the league, I totally undermined myself. “I never thought I could compete with the world-class players because I didn’t rate myself as world-class, but playing with them gave me confidence. Stepping in there has made me strongly believe in myself that I could actually achieve something.”

PARLIAMENTARY INQUIRY INTO AUTISM Greens senator and disability advocate Jordon Steele-John will be on the crossparty committee which has the backing of Labor, independent Jacqui Lambie and the Centre Alliance. The National Disability Insurance Scheme will be in sharp focus during the inquiry. Senator Hughes said the committee would examine whether the scheme is funding best-practice programs. “I could tell you stories, but I’m pretty sure any autism parent who’s been around a

Autism will be the subject of a wide-ranging parliamentary inquiry looking at services, support and life outcomes for people on the spectrum. The Senate has established a select committee on autism which will look at the need for a national strategy. Liberal senator and committee chair Hollie Hughes, whose 10-year-old son Fred has autism, said the inquiry would be the first of its kind. “Just to have this sort of focus and this sort of support for people with autism, the autism community and families is just extraordinary,” she told AAP.

can be the most amazing people that you’ll ever meet,” the senator said. “We just as a society or a community haven’t really fully understood or embraced how we can best utilise people with autism. “These people are amazing. Fred can look at a picture of New York and tell you what year it is by looking at the skyline – and he’s 10.” Fred was diagnosed almost eight years ago before undergoing intensive behaviour and early intervention programs. “We weren’t given a great diagnosis, but he just continues going from strength to strength,” Senator Hughes said. “He’s just the light of my life and one of my favourite people in the world.” The select committee will examine diagnosis of autism including the underrepresentation of females in autism data and gender bias in assessment and support services. “With autism, it’s not really health but you’re diagnosed by a health practitioner. You can fall between some cracks so helping to bridge that will be really important,” Senator Hughes said. Funding of autism research, social inclusion of people with autism and advocacy are also included in the terms of the inquiry. The committee is due to present its final report in early 2021. -AAP

PROFILE

Team’s winning style These Maleny-based building designers have added even more awards to their collection thanks to their work at Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

f you’ve visited the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny in the past two years, you will have no doubt marvelled at the new building, which blends beautifully with its stunning surroundings. Completely redesigned and rebuilt in 2017, it has won 26 awards to date and much praise from locals and visitors alike. The team behind the stunning construction is Maleny couple Norman Richards and Fiona Briody. To add to their long list of awards, they won three more at the National Association of Building Designers Awards in October, two of which were for the discovery centre at Mary Cairncross, designed

in collaboration with Guymer Bailey Architects. Bathed in natural light, it features locally sourced natural materials including blackbutt, tallowwood and ironbark timber and local basalt stone. This aesthetic is a hallmark of the couple’s work, which also includes the Maleny Community Centre and a number of award-winning home designs and renovations, including R-B House, which won Best Alteration/Addition Residential Design up to $350,000 at the October awards. “We live not too far from Mary Cairncross and we go walking there quite often,” says Ms Briody. “We knew it was a sensitive site for the community and people loved it how

it was. We worked really hard to ensure it still had that feeling of connection to the rainforest. We love seeing people enjoy the spaces there – that’s the biggest reward. “It was carefully considered,” Mr Richards says of the design. “The big window space north, the entry court sheltered from the south-easterlies, the overhangs that allow sun in winter and not in summer. The basalt blade walls direct your view to the mountains and back to the forest.” Ms Briody adds, “There’s a lot of consideration that goes into it. We always do all of our designs in 3D models. We look at where the sun will be on every day of the year so we can design overhangs and be able to make spaces that are comfortable year round. Living locally gives us a knowledge of the micro-climates.” “Your spirit just feels good when you’re in a space that’s well lit and elegantly proportioned,” says Mr Richards. “These things are important. The use of simple but good materials – natural materials.” The couple spent a year perfecting the design and working with a committee of 13 people, so it was a thrill to finally lay eyes on the finished product. “It’s amazing, first walking on a site where you’ve had a vision of what you wanted to create,” says Mr Richards. “It all starts with sketches using a 6B pencil. To walk back with it built and it’s doing what you envisioned it would do and it’s going to be there for a lot longer than me, that is very cool.” “That feeling never gets old,” says Ms Briody. “Every project we work on, we have that feeling. We spend so long on the computer building models that it’s a very exciting feeling when we’re on site.” Mr Richards grew up in Toronto and nurtured dreams of becoming an architect from the age of eight. In 1988 he received a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and opened his

own design/build practice in Toronto. “I was obsessed with drawing spaces and buildings and I was inspired by the modern architecture in Europe,” he says. “After graduating, I did design and building for 10 years because I felt you should know how to build if you’re going to design something. We were doing high-end commercial work, boutiques, the sort of thing young graduates do. I also did public art, all designed and built by myself at the time. It was very hands-on.” Ms Briody is a building designer with a background in environmental engineering. She and Mr Richards met on a scuba diving trip in Indonesia and discovered a shared love of architecture and nature. After living in London for seven years, they came to Australia, settling in Maleny in 2004. There,

“We love seeing people enjoy the spaces there – that’s the biggest reward” they have raised two children and created a building design business that punches well above its weight. “It’s definitely quality over quantity for us,” says Mr Richards. “Maleny is a place we can have great clients, a benign climate and a lifestyle you would only dream of if you lived and worked in London.” “We also get to do new buildings here, whereas in London you’re mostly doing renovations,” says Ms Briody. “It’s nice because we can help to improve our local environment, bit by bit, so we get the benefit too. We are in rural Australia yet we’re doing work that’s getting national recognition, and we are able to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast.”

TRAVEL

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Luxury

city escape The Westin Brisbane is the first in Australia to offer the Heavenly Spa – reason enough to visit for a weekend. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

T

here are three white stones in front of me, inscribed with one word each: gratitude, hope and love. I’m invited to select the one that resonates with me. I don’t hesitate as I reach for the gratitude stone. I am grateful for many

things – being a mother, my family’s good health, a supportive husband, a great working life, the chance to travel. The list goes on. But, I’m the first to admit that every now and then I crave a little rest and relaxation. And, between you and me, the silence that

engulfs me as I lie on a deliciously heated massage bed at the Heavenly Spa by Westin, is terrific. The Westin Brisbane is the first in Australia to offer its global luxury spa brand, and with kind and professional therapists, relaxation pods and luxurious treatments, the spa lives up to its name. The hour-long signature massage is only one highlight during a much-needed mums’ weekend away with my friend. With the silly season upon us – presents to buy, family events to organise, excited candy-cane induced children to wrangle and deadlinedriven work environments – we have taken the opportunity to escape for 24 hours. Located in the city centre, the five-star Westin Brisbane marked the luxury brand’s Queensland debut when it opened its doors in November, 2018. The hotel brings a blend of sophistication, style and Brisbane’s first swim-up bar, which is a non-negotiable requirement for any luxury weekend away. Pool bar, rosé lounge, executive lounge access, restaurant and super comfortable rooms – what more could you want?

FESTIVE SEASON SAVINGS

LOCATION The hotel sits on Mary Street and is a short walk to The Myer Centre and surrounding restaurants and boutiques. It’s a perfect base for shopping, wining and dining. ROOMS The Westin Brisbane boasts 299 guest rooms. They are tastefully furnished and feature flat-screen televisions with Chromecast (hello Netflix binge!). The walls are adorned with beautiful artwork, the bathrooms are luxurious, and I also loved the added inclusion of a Dyson hairdryer. STAYING THERE Celebrate The Westin Brisbane’s first birthday with a city staycation. The package includes overnight accommodation, $40 hotel credit valid at Heavenly Spa by Westin, Eden’s Table, and Nautilus Pool Bar, 2pm late check-out on Sundays and free wifi. Use the promotional code 4AV when making your reservation. Valid until December 30, 2019. PAMPERING THERE Heavenly Spa is open seven days a week and is offering a great first birthday celebration offer up until December 30. The 75-minute treatment includes a white tea three-stone ritual, massage, organic aromatherapy facial and eye treatment. It costs $155.

Rewind the clock and HQMR\WKHEHQHƬWV Residents at Nature’s Edge Buderim are discovering the anti-ageing benefits of an active lifestyle paired with Bowen therapy. As part of a range of health and wellness activities on offer at Nature’s Edge Buderim, Bowen therapy is a new service now available. Resident Fay Winter, a former nurse and Bowen therapist of 16 years, runs her practice out of the Leisure Centre and it’s proving to be quite a hit within the community. “Bowen therapy is a remedial treatment of the nervous system, a bit like acupuncture without needles. SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL PROMOTION

QUEENSLAND BALLET DANCE CAMP

TurtleCare volunteers of Buddina and North Bribie Island, who began surveying the beaches on November 1, were rewarded with exciting finds during their recent beach walks.

T

he first two Loggerhead turtles to lay a nest, or clutch, of eggs arrived on Sunshine Coast shores on the night of November 22. The region’s turtle nesting traditionally begins in November and continues through until February. We can expect to see many more nesting females arriving on our beaches over the next several weeks, with the peak in nesting occurring over Christmas and New Year. TurtleCare volunteers undertake daily surveys of every beach from North Bribie to Buddina and are responsible for our ongoing monitoring program for nesting activity. The team has undergone thorough and intensive professional training with the Queensland Government Turtle Project on how to

identify and record species, nesting locations and frequency, protect nests from predators, and monitor the success of hatchlings emerging from nests. We encourage the public to have a chat with these dedicated volunteers in blue shirts when they come upon a turtle nest or track. Volunteers also helped in a recent satellite tracking research project in which council gained insight into the inter-nesting habitats use of local nesting turtles. Loggerheads from eastern Australia are regularly recorded migrating between 1000 and 2600 kilometres between their foraging and nesting grounds. The turtles coming to our local beaches have travelled thousands of kilometres, possibly from as far away as New Caledonia or New Guinea. ‘Gandugan’,

a nesting female from the 2017/18 nesting season, lives in the Swains, in the Outer Great Barrier Reef. So let’s welcome these ancient mariners and look out for them and their nests this summer season. The start of the turtle nesting season is a good reminder to look after our Sunshine Coast beaches, waterways and parks and keep them clean from litter and marine debris. Council’s next community beach clean-up is the annual Clean Up for the Hatchlings on February 8, 2020. For more information about our native turtles, the TurtleCare volunteer program and the tracking project, please visit council’s website and search turtlecare. www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/turtlecare.

PROPOSED UPGRADE TO OUTRIGGER PARK Boaties and fishing lovers may already be familiar with the rough terrain and informal carpark at the much-loved Outrigger Park in Minyama. In conjunction with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, council is proposing to upgrade the site with improved access, increased recreational opportunities and to protect the area from erosion. Visit council’s website to view a layout of the proposed upgrade and have your say before December 20.

MY OPINION

NAUGHTY BUT NICE

LOSS CAN BE A GIFT

Sami Muirhead is once again swept up in the Christmas hype, spending too much, eating too much and decorating too much.

Rebecca Grisman navigates her way through the difficult and painful terrain of loss and grief, learning valuable lessons along the way.

O

h Christmas you little minx! You roll around so fast every year. This year I am doing exactly what I said I was not going to do: spending way too much and buying more plastic rubbish my kids do not need. I swore we would do things rather than buy stuff. I would teach them the meaning of thoughtfully selected and ethically made toys. But I caved. I have bought too much plastic stuff and melted my plastic card in the process. On top of that I have already eaten my body weight in fruit mince pies and rum balls. My jeans are tight and the festive feasting is still ahead of us. As for easing off the drink, well, that would be a Christmas miracle as it is pretty hard to stay dry this time of year. The house is decked out in nutcrackers, as that is our theme this year. So the 12 boxes of old Chrissy decorations have stayed in their containers, as I had to buy new red, green and gold decorations with splashes of tartan to go with my 19 new nutcrackers. My poor husband. He must think its normal behaviour to have a new colour scheme for Christmas every year. The top of my eldest boy’s wish list is a Ninja Turtle Sewer Hideout. It costs $200. Yep. Santa may not be flush enough to buy it this year. The other little boy wants a giant Hot Wheels car set with King Kong exploding out of the side. I think the toy designers are either drunk or on crack. Where do they

come up with these ideas? My daughter wants one thing: a dog. We have three dogs, so a canine is not coming for Christmas. Her second wish is a snake. I would take 101 dogs over a single snake. But they will be getting some toys despite me hating myself for adding to our material things. So bring on the crazy season. I know I am pathetic so save the hate mail telling me I should buy less and spend more ethically and drink in moderation at this time of year. I would like to live this way, but I have no self-control. I will be writing in the upcoming weeks about some amazing charities running Christmas drives but today’s column is purely a First World, white privilege kind of vibe. As for my Christmas list? I have wanted to go to Gold Class since the fancy cinemas opened at Kawana. I would like a glass of champagne to start. Nachos and sliders in between and a big fat chocolate treat for dessert. My second item on the list is for the family meal to be delivered twice a week for 2020. No thinking about what to cook: no actual cooking, no whingeing about how the kids do not like my cooking. And thirdly, I would like a bright yellow bike with a basket that I could pop my eldest shitsu in as I peddle around Point Cartwright to forget I have melted my credit card on material rubbish. None of these gifts will be happening. I have not been good enough all year.

moments to hopefully remind us of that day and that feeling. I’ve played music that transports us back to a special event or shared day. I’ve started singing out loud more and hugging more tightly and being less worried about seeming silly or too sensitive. I’ve sat in a cupboard to play hide and seek – and just to hide. I have scrambled for the simplest words to explain to children what is happening when I hardly know myself and I’m mindful I’ve previously told them adults always know what to do next.

“Loss is teaching me acceptance and at times the lessons are brutal…” We have made favourite childhood meals, searched out scrappy old Christmas ornaments to reuse, and revisited places that once were regular haunts to rekindle that familiarity. I am reluctantly getting used to, slowly but carefully, letting myself feel upset or helpless. I am also struggling but striving to ask for help, space and forgiveness. I know I’m not alone in this journey, but it takes real effort to reach out when that is often all you feel. Making that effort, it turns out, is one of the best gifts from loss that I’ve found.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS PACK

I

t can be easy to get caught up in the pain, anguish and regret of losing something you love or that has emotional attachment. I’ve long believed that losing jewellery meant it was time to let that connection go – I’ve lost rings in the surf, a bangle in a paddock, and an expensive earring overboard that I reluctantly watched sink slowly away. Maybe it was its time. Loss of any kind causes a lot of mixed feelings for me, from self-blame to irrationally imagining life will never be the same. Right now I am going down the many side roads of losing things I cannot recover, including a friend on the eve of her birthday when I planned to visit; a partner and all the hopes and experiences I thought we would share; as well as a family member, who is also slowly losing his incredible talents and faculties like a fading favourite song. Some days he is here and sometimes not, we cannot know and cannot change it, we can only take it as it comes and try to hold back the tears that confuse him. Loss is teaching me acceptance and at times the lessons are brutal. The only remedies I have for the overwhelm, denial, frustration and sadness are to sleep well, be present with my family and friends, talk about the spinning thoughts in my head, and to focus on the smallest of joys and mercies. I’ve looked through much-loved memories in frayed photo albums and pointed out the best

You’ll be dancing in your seat to the biggest hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody To Love, Another One Bites The Dust, Fat Bottomed Girls, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. BANKFOOT HOUSE RECEIVES HERITAGE AWARDS Heritage-listed museum Bankfoot House received two High Commendation awards at the prestigious 2019 Queensland Heritage Awards. Bankfoot House was highly commended in the Interpretation and Promotion category for its Enhancing Experience project and in the Conservation Work category for the Shed Conservation and Restoration Project. Heritage Portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says the projects involved restoring the shed, enhancing existing exhibitions, introducing temporary exhibitions, developing public programs, exploring educational initiatives and collaborating with festivals and events. “The projects have opened a myriad

of avenues to more comprehensively tell the story of Bankfoot House and the three generations of the same family who lived on the property for 134 years,” he says. “Research on the family began in 2006 with the Friends of Bankfoot House and continues today as more stories unfold from this amazing collection.” The Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct is a two-acre property that incorporates Bankfoot House, the Mary Grigor Centre, outbuildings including a laundry and dairy, restored shed and grounds including the wagon shed, vehicle ramp and gardens.

Di Morrissey is a titan of Australian fiction and with this, her 27th novel, she takes the reader into one of the last remaining natural paradises in Bali and into the life of Grace. This is a heartwarming story of a young woman’s strength, resilience and courage after the world of the protagonist falls apart. With a new job in a new country, can Grace begin to rebuild a new life for her and her daughter following the betrayal of her husband? As with many of Ms Morrissey’s novels, there is an environmental undertone and in this case, it is focused on the consequences of Bali’s booming tourism industry. This is a must read for the lazy summer days ahead.

With the sun and Mercury both visiting your sign, it’s time to shake off the shackles of other people’s expectations and instead be the real you. Friday’s Mars-Neptune trine encourages dreaming big dreams and imagining creative schemes.

With the full moon activating your wellbeing zone, get moving and exercising! Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are all powering through your sign. This planetary quartet makes you more proactive about turning opportunities into good fortune.

This week, the full moon stimulates your drama and eccentricity zones, plus Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto fire up your imagination. It’s a wonderful week to tackle a creative project and express yourself in your own unique and quirky Aquarian way.

A work issue, volunteer project or family matter is taking up a lot of your time but, if you hang in there, it will pay off in the long run. Mars activates your travel zone and motivates you to move forward while Neptune has you dreaming of exotic escapes.

Massachusetts, America. The property includes almost two kilometres of Atlantic Ocean beachfront and was the Martha’s Vineyard estate of Mrs Onassis. The home, which was built in 1981, has been treasured and preserved for 40 years, as a summer home and refuge for Jackie O and for her children and grandchildren.

Fr LAN om D $3 LO 49 TS ,0 00

he summer home of one of the most iconic women in modern day history – Jackie Kennedy Onassis – has been listed with Christies. Named Red Gate Farm, the 340-acre sanctuary at the edge of Squibnocket Pond is a wild and beautiful oceanfront escape etched into the New England coastline in

When Mrs Onassis purchased Red Gate Farm in 1979, the former sheep farm had just one structure – a small hunting cabin. Mrs Onassis’ dear friend Rachel ‘Bunny’ Mellon designed the estate’s landscapes. A noted horticulturist and landscape designer, Bunny Mellon had redesigned the White House Rose Garden when Mrs Onassis was First Lady of the United States. Renowned architect Hugh Newell Jacobson designed the elegant Cape Cod-style main house and the two-storey guest house, which were completed in 1981. Mrs Onassis’ daughter Caroline Kennedy commissioned Deborah Berke, dean of the Yale School of Architecture, to renovate and expand the main residence in 2000, retaining its understated, timeless elegance. All rooms except the dining room overlook

the Atlantic Ocean and the property includes two freshwater ponds, as well as a vegetable garden and blueberry patch, an outdoor pool, tennis court, and a fairy treehouse, which Mrs Onassis built for her grandchildren. Overlooking Squibnocket Pond is the original hunting cabin that has a threebedroom caretaker’s house, a barn, two garages (one with a two-bedroom apartment), a temperature-controlled storage building, and a boathouse. There is also a selfcontained two-storey guest house on the property. This property is a legacy estate in the truest sense.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Does it feel to you like the seasons start later and finish later? This last week was meant to be the first week of summer but it definitely felt like spring is still hanging on, with howling northerlies that have been our staple for too long now? While the mid-north coast of New South Wales’ many back beaches are rejoicing, the only people rejoicing around here are the kite surfers. Bring on a southerly change on Sunday and hope and pray for some energy in the ocean pointed our way.
