To make the nahm jihm, trim roots from coriander and rinse well. Pick leaves and reserve. Process coriander roots, ginger, garlic, half the chillies, lime zest and juice, fish sauce and brown sugar in a food processor until well combined and finely chopped.

2.

For the salad, place onion, cucumber, grapes, reserved coriander leaves, mint, remaining chillies and ½ nahm jihm dressing in a large bowl and toss to combine, season with salt and pepper.

3.

To cook the steaks, pre-heat the BBQ and turn to medium heat.

Lightly coat the steaks in vegetable oil, salt and pepper, drain off any excess oil, then place the steak on the BBQ grill and sear for 2 minutes.

4.

Turn the steak with the raw side still facing up to achieve crisscross char-grill lines and wait for tiny drops of blood to form on the surface, (this is for medium rare) then turn over.

5.

Cook the steak on the second side for about half the time as the first side then remove and allow the steak to rest for 5 minutes.

6.

To serve, place salad on a serving platter, slice steaks into thick pieces, and arrange on top of the salad, drizzle with remaining nahm jihm dressing and then scatter with peanuts.

I

t started as a light ‘tink, tink, tink’, and then the sky seemingly cracked open. The hailstones fell fast and furious, flinging into our windows and coating our deck with round ice cubes the size of golf balls.

Our normally green front lawn became a sea of white. We had just put the finishing touches on our Christmas tree (I know, I know – it’s not yet December 1…) when the supercell hit. Our young son, understandably, thought we had awakened the holiday gods who had answered his prayers for a white Christmas.

Thankfully we didn’t sustain too much damage, but the same can’t be said for thousands of other Sunshine Coast residents.

More than 10,000 properties lost power and in initial stages the SES recorded more than 150 storm-related jobs. Sunshine Coast Council was quick to act with emergency workers clearing roads, and providing emergency accommodation for those in need.

The afternoon storm was a thundering reminder of the need to be prepared this summer season. In this edition, Leigh Robshaw speaks to Thomas Hinterdorfer. Thomas is a member of the Higgins Storm Chasing team and provides great insight into the season ahead. You can read the story on page 14.

Especially now that nursery rhymes have made their way in on heavy rotation. Music is my equaliser and tone-setter. There is always music on in our house and a spontaneous family dance party in the lounge room is already one of our daughter’s favourite activities.

OUR PLACE The first inhabitants of the Sunshine Coast were the people of the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) language group, whose ancestors came to the region as far back as 30,000 years. When European explorers came to the district and observed their Indigenous neighbours, they were considered some of the healthiest Aborigines ever seen, due to the abundant food sources.

The Gubbi Gubbi language group comprised four main clans, which were the Undanbi (or Undumbi), Nalbo, Dulingbara and Gubbi Gubbi peoples.

The first sightings and observations in the district were recorded by explorers on May 17, 1770 when botanist Joseph Banks, who was on board Lieutenant James Cook’s HMS Endeavour, observed water of a different colour discharging south into the ocean. This waterway was later to be known as Pumicestone Passage.

Lieutenant Cook also noted the prominent hills and called them the Glass Houses.

They reminded him of the glass-making furnaces in his native homeland around Yorkshire, England. He described their location in his log so as to guide future explorers to these conspicuous landmarks.

After Sunday’s destructive supercell storm, we look at what to expect from this year’s storm season – and how to be prepared. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

hen hailstones the size of golf balls hammered the Sunshine Coast on Sunday afternoon, it caught many of us off guard.

Long lines of cars were stranded on the Bruce Highway, their windscreens smashed to smithereens. Farms sustained hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to crops, traffic lights were out and hundreds of homes were still without power as of Monday.

The supercell storm came in swift and strong, a savage wake-up call after weeks of nothing but hot weather and bushfires. While the Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for destructive winds and giant hailstones on the afternoon of November 17, most of us were happily enjoying our Sunday without keeping an eye on storm warnings.

The supercell storm was a stark reminder that we can’t afford to become complacent, even when we go for weeks without so much as a drop of rain on the horizon.

Thomas Hinterdorfer from the Higgins Storm Chasing team has been keeping a close eye on weather patterns and has insight into the types of storms we can expect this year.

“November is usually our most active month for storms, but this year has been a slow start to the season,” says Mr Hinterdorfer. “It’s going to be similar to the last two years where we had below-average figures for the number of storms but above-average for the severity of storms.

“We’ll probably get a wave of pretty active storms through to late February and late March, which will be in conjunction with the upper troughs that want to come through.”

Sunshine Coast Council’s disaster management coordinator Cathy Buck says we won’t be seeing a lot of rain over the next month or two, but we need to stay vigilant and be prepared for storms.

But because of our geographic location, the waters come up quite quickly and then they recede quite quickly. Prolonged flooding events are not as much an issue for us as they are for western towns.”

“The Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast is fairly neutral,” she says. “We’re not looking at any big rain until January, although we’ll certainly be getting some storms throughout the next couple of months.”

While there are certainly areas of the Sunshine Coast prone to flooding, it’s not a major problem for us compared with other parts of the country.

“In terms of the unique challenges the Sunshine Coast faces, it would be more so

“The main feedback we get from the SES is that people need to make sure their yards are tidy. Most people have their emergency kits at home so it’s more about keeping those

loose items put away – trampolines, furniture and play equipment. Just those things that could possibly be taken away by high winds.

“Also, we do still get people trying to cross flooded roads. We try and promote the ‘if it’s flooded forget it’ message as much as possible. Under no circumstances should you need to drive through flooded water. It’s just too dangerous. It’s better not to get to your destination.”

When you look at the long list of items authorities suggest keeping in emergency kits, it’s a little overwhelming. Do we really need all that stuff?

“We do suggest people have all those things in their kits,” Ms Buck says. “They aren’t necessarily going to need it all.

“Things like three days’ worth of food is more important in the more inaccessible areas of the hinterland that get cut off. We expect people to be resilient in those areas and have torches, tarps and make sure their homes are safe.

“Tune into warnings, keep up to date on Disaster Hub and our social media channels.

We recommend listening to ABC radio to keep abreast of what’s happening.”

There are three thunderstorm types: the single-cell, the multicell and the supercell. Supercells account for most of the serious thunderstorm events we experience. It is characterised by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft.

5 KEY POINTS Severe storms or thunderstorms are classified by the Bureau of Meteorology as storms that are likely to produce large hail measuring more than two centimetres in diameter; wind speeds of more than 90 kilometres an hour, and heavy rainfall conducive to flash flooding.

A severe storm warning will only be issued by the Bureau for storms that are likely to produce all three elements.

The wet season usually starts on the Sunshine Coast with thunderstorms in November. Cyclones can occur from December to April.

Unlike north Queensland, the risk of a category 4 or 5 cyclone is rated as very low. Winter storms are usually associated with fast-moving east-coast lows.

Rain on the Sunshine Coast is usually confined to the wet season. However, flooding on the Sunshine Coast can occur any time of year. Inland flooding of the Coast’s waterways, creeks, rivers and low-lying plains is a regular occurrence when we get extremely heavy rainfall.

risbane’s Thomas Hinterdorfer loves storms so much, he proposed to his girlfriend Amber Hardie in a big green paddock with a spectacular storm brewing behind them. Of course, the special moment was captured on camera because taking photos of storms is what Mr Hinterdorfer does for a living as part of the Higgins Storm Chasing team.

“The plan was always to get engaged in front of a big storm, but we missed a lot of opportunities from Christmas onwards,” says Mr Hinterdorfer. “We were either on the wrong side of the storm or in the wrong position or just not chasing at all. We couldn’t seem to get that perfect combination.

“Amber was the one who wanted to chase the day before Valentine’s Day and I was a bit sceptical. We went up to a hill in Bellthorpe and the moment just happened. It was only a 10-minute window, but it worked.”

Rain bucketed down just minutes after the proposal and when the couple marries in 2021, they’re hoping the weather will be fine.

Mr Hinterdorfer, who is studying meteorology at university, travels to the US most years to chase storms, but says he’ll have to take a year off to pay for the wedding.

“We recommend you stay indoors and out of harm’s way when severe storms are around,” he says. “Make sure you’ve got battery-powered objects like a radio and torch and make sure things are charged up.

“With us, a lot of it comes down to experience and most of the time we do stay out of the storm. It’s very rare for us to get caught in the storm and most of the time we still seek shelter in the storm. It’s common for us to find a service station or shed so we can get extra protection.

“At the end of the day, the longer we stay in front of the storm, the longer we take photos for and that’s what we’re after.”

Storm chasing is regarded as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. So why does he do it?

“For me, it’s seeing something natural and you get these scenes that just leave you speechless. I’ve had it both in Australia and in America. You can’t believe what you’re looking at.

“There’s a bit of a scientific purpose to it as well. You want to understand why things happen. One of the big mysteries is why some storms produce a tornado and some don’t.

No one really knows that yet, but we’re getting closer to finding out why.”

“Amber wants to come to the States too and do tornado alley with me,” he says. “The plan whenever I go is to go between April and June. I go wherever there are storms and I go nonstop every day, sleep in hotels, chase, eat, repeat.

“Tornadoes are the pinnacle, but if you can get a good day with a beautiful-looking storm that’s photogenic, that can sometimes be worth more than a tornado. Tornadoes aren’t always photogenic and if you go through populated areas, they’re hard to chase because you start dealing with debris.

“The lower-end tornadoes can be more photographic. If you can get a supercell with amazing structure, often a chaser will take that over a tornado.”

Mr Hinterdorfer has been chasing and photographing storms since he left school seven years ago and was delighted when Sunshine Coast-based Jeff Higgins asked him to join Higgins Storm Chasing, which produces high-resolution weather forecasts for its subscribers, as well as stunning images made famous originally through Facebook.

During storm season, he can work 90 hours a week and has found himself in dangerous situations, but cautions the general public from following in his footsteps.

BUDERIM 9 RETURNS FOR AN UPHILL BATTLE

The Queensland Government’s project for widening the Bruce Highway from four to six lanes between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way has been given the green light by Infrastructure Australia, the nation’s independent infrastructure advisor. Infrastructure Australia chief executive Romilly Madew has welcomed the 11-kilometre upgrade of the highway as a Priority Project on The Infrastructure Priority List. To mitigate flood risk, the project will also include the replacement of 10 bridges (two carriageways) over Lagoon Creek, King Johns Creek, Six Mile Creek, Rose Creek and Beerburrum Creek.

OPENING DATE FOR AIRPORT CONFIRMED The ninth annual Buderim 9 Challenge 2019 event is back, calling for those willing to take on nine of the biggest hills around Buderim with pedal power on December 22. The challenge is an annual 76-kilometre community cycling event that lasts for three hours, an exhilarating ride to raise funds for Coast charity CPL (Choice Passion Life) to help families with members with cerebral palsy. This year, the event will become more inclusive than ever, with new distance categories including Buderim 3, Buderim 6 and Buderim Electric, a special category for electric bikes. There will also be a Disability Kids Ride organised by Sunshine Coast Developmental Physiotherapy in the Buderim Wanderers Football Club. The first plane will touch down on the new Sunshine Coast Airport runway on May 21, 2020. Sunshine Coast Council CEO Michael Whittaker announced the date at the council’s November ordinary meeting while releasing the council’s Annual Report 2018-19. The east-west runway was originally earmarked for completion in late 2020 after construction began in March this year. On October 9, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved airspace changes that will enable new flight paths to be in place to support the operation of the new runway when it opens.

TOUCH CHAMPION CLAIMS USC SPORTS AWARD Sunshine Coast tourism operators have taken out an impressive 11 accolades at this year’s Queensland Tourism Awards, with Australia Zoo proving a favourite – securing three Awards. Australia Zoo took out the RACQ People’s Choice Award for Experiences and Services, in addition to silver in the Major Tourist Attractions category and the Young Achievers Award for Robert Irwin’s remarkable contribution to the industry at such a young age. This year, the Sunshine Coast hosted the annual tourism Awards at the newly constructed $10-million Sunshine Coast Convention Centre at Novotel Twin Waters Resort, where more than 900 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of Queensland’s best tourism operators. A total of 83 awards, including 26 gold, 25 silver, 24 bronze, four highly commended and two individual awards were awarded across 28 categories, as well as two RACQ People’s Choice Awards. Other Sunshine Coast winners included gold awards for the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival, Habitat Noosa and Queensland Air Museum.

Dally M medal winner for the NRL’s national touch competition Hayley Maddick has been named the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2019. The Brisbane Broncos player, who is studying a dual degree in Education and Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies, received her trophy from USC’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) Professor Denise Wood at the University’s Sports Awards ceremony.

Maddick’s 2019 season saw her pick up four Player of the Match Awards on her way to being named the NRL Touch Player of the Year 2019. Her team finished as competition premiers.

More than 40 students from the Sunshine Coast region gathered for a Youth Parliament to debate sustainability measures including wildlife protection and visited Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to learn about conservation. The Speaker of the Queensland Parliament Curtis Pitt says the Youth Parliament, saying that it provides a unique insight into how Queensland’s democratic processes work. LITERARY TREASURE HUNT The Look for a Book initiative is encouraging young Sunshine Coast residents and their families to read, share and give back to others in the community. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

A

treasure hunt with a difference is taking the Sunshine Coast by storm and putting more books into the hands of children at the same time.

The Look For a Book trend, which has been operating throughout the US and the UK for a number of years, has finally reached Coast shores.

Alex Street Library founder Sue Perry and a host of other Sunshine Coast street library operators joined forces to launch the Look For a Book initiative earlier this month, hiding dozens of books in parks around the region.

The volunteers place a children’s book into a reusable Ziploc bag with a note stating that the finder can choose to read the book and leave it in its place, or take the book home and treasure it.

Ms Perry says a number of families who have found books have posted their finds on the Sunshine Coast Look for a Book Facebook page, which now has more than 800 followers.

“The utter delight on the kids’ faces as they find something special and

“I have tears in my eyes reading some of the posts from parents who have found books with their kids. One little five-yearold told his mum, ‘This is the best thing that’s happened to me today’.

“It has inspired so many people to get on board and I’ve heard from so many mums, grandparents and teachers who are preparing to do their own book drops. It’s almost as if they are as excited by the thought of doing the drops as the kids are to find the books.”

Ms Perry describes the initiative as an “outdoor adventure game for kids”.

“It’s an open game and it belongs to the community. Anyone can look for books and anyone can hide books anytime in public spaces that are kid-friendly,” she says.

“We encourage people who do their own book drops to post a photo up on our Facebook page so that others can know where to find them. I’ve even heard of children who have found a book and been so excited by it that they go on to organise their own mini drop with their parents.”

For the group’s first ‘Big Drop’ in November, a small team of six people hid books from Marcoola down to Kawana.

They are already co-ordinating another Big Drop event on December 7 and have 17 volunteers on board ready to hide more

than 200 books between Noosa and Caloundra as well as out to Maleny.

Ms Perry says it has cost her only $100 to set up this incredible treasure hunt, with all of the books being donated by Coast families in excellent pre-loved condition, ready to go to new homes. “I am very excited to see how fast it’s grown,” she says.

“It’s great to see anything that encourages kids to read books. It’s free, it’s getting them outdoors and it’s embracing things like sharing if the kids choose to re-hide the books after they have enjoyed them, as well as recycling with the reusable bags and keeping the books out of landfill.

“Often parents are sitting there just letting their kids play on the same park equipment, but I’ve actually seen children find books and run back excitedly to their parent, who might be on their phone, and they then have this beautiful time where they are sitting in the park reading a book together.”

Ms Perry encourages everyone to get on board with Look For a Book, either as seekers on the hunt for a literary treasure, or as hiders who are ready and willing to place books ready to be found.

CALOUNDRA MAN WINS QUEENSLAND MENTAL HEALTH AWARD James Hill is using his experience of mental illness to help others through his work and advocacy, and the Caloundra resident has just been recognised for his efforts.

C

aloundra resident James Hill has been announced as the winner of the Jeff Cheverton Individual Award category in the 2019 Queensland Mental Health Week Achievement Awards, for the work he does in raising awareness of mental health and reducing stigma.

Mr Hill is a speaker for Beyond Blue, a Mental Health First Aid instructor, suicide safeTALK instructor and mental health advocate for Energy Queensland.

By openly sharing his own mental illness experience, Mr Hill is helping to create better awareness of mental health issues in communities. “I share my story as often as I can where it’s valuable,” he says.

“It’s a real-life story and is still connected to emotions. I have to prepare myself each time and sometimes you don’t realise how much it takes out of you.

“It has been a significant part of my life and I want to reach as many people as possible to make a difference.

“One of the biggest challenges I still see

is breaking down stigma that surrounds mental illness,” he adds. “There is still so much work to do.

“Everyone has a part to play and it can start with something as simple as understanding mental illness and being okay to talk about it in a non-judgemental and supportive environment.”

Mr Hill says he started his work life as an electrical apprentice in his native England and says he had no concept of mental health as a youngster.

“I always had the mindset that it didn’t affect people like me,” he says.

“The environment I was working in very much had a mentality of ‘toughen up’ and that was my biggest undoing I suppose. It was in the mid-2000s when I began to struggle and I didn’t understand what was going on.

“It took me to some pretty dark places, to the point where I was thinking about ending my life.

“A survey from Beyond Blue came up on my phone and it was a test for depression

LOCAL NEWS and anxiety. In my head I was telling myself this wasn’t what was wrong with me, but I took the test anyway to rule it out. The results came back and said I needed medical help.

“If I hadn’t have come across that test, I don’t know what would’ve happened.”

Mr Hill says he physically looked fine and couldn’t comprehend that he would need to visit a doctor for a mental health issue, but taking this brave step set him on his course to being able to better recognise his warning signs and manage the symptoms when they arise.

Earlier this year, Mr Hill was a guest panellist at the Queensland Mental Health Commission’s Shifting Minds forum and says “every conversation has the potential to save a life”. “The journey we have been on is so worthwhile because we are bringing some of the stigma out of the shadows and creating an environment where people feel genuine support,” he says.

“Often people feel alone. If we can help guide people along the path to care and support, we’ve made a difference.”

The Jeff Cheverton Individual Award category, which Mr Hill won, recognises individuals for their outstanding work in improving the quality of life of Queenslanders living with mental illness and promoting their inclusion in the broader community.

His workplace, Energy Queensland, also won an award for the mental health support and advocacy programs created by Mr Hill and his colleague Aaron McCann.

Mr Hill says anyone who is feeling out of sorts should reach out and talk to somebody.

“There’s a lot of help out there. You don’t have to do this alone,” he says.

“If you had a sore ankle, you wouldn’t just think you could walk it off and it would get better. You’d go to a doctor before it got worse. Mental health is no different.”

TEENS THE FOCUS OF ROAD SAFETY PROJECT The University of the Sunshine Coast has launched a world-first project to teach young passengers road safety.

The free Young Passengers Road Safety research project includes an online program, developed by the USC-based Adolescent Risk Research Unit (ARRU), and aims to encourage teenage passengers to act as co-drivers and gain situation awareness skills before they obtain a Learner licence.

Senior Research Fellow and ARRU Leader Dr Bridie Scott-Parker says the program is ideal for anyone who does not have a licence and is planning to travel with young drivers over the school holidays.

“We know that many kids are leaving schools driving with a red P plate, which is one of the most dangerous times on the road for them with an increased risk of being involved in a fatal road crash,” Dr Scott-Parker says.

“Encouraging passengers to figure out the risks in the driving environment can improve safety – and improve their own driving skills when they get their L-plates. As a co-driver rather than a passenger, if they see a risky situation, they can help the driver avoid potential hazards and crashes.”

Pre-learners aged 15-18 years and their parents, guardians and grandparents are invited to take part.

Participation involves viewing online road safety training videos, completing four surveys and recording four in-car driving sessions with a GoPro camera. Participants will receive a gift card for each activity they complete.

Dr Scott-Parker designed the program after more than a decade investigating the behaviour of novice drivers behind the wheel.

“This program has helped to improve the road safety of drivers of all ages, ranging from our youngest learners to our oldest seniors,” she says.

“This obvious next step is to see if it can improve the road skills of teen passengers.”

Meet, eat

and be merry Michelle Christoe is driven to bring people together by combining good food with a great atmosphere. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

t was almost nine years ago when Michelle Christoe and husband Ian Van der Woude found themselves discussing a new business venture in a rather romantic place – Italy. They pictured a buzzing outdoor night market with innovative street food and fabulous entertainment, with street performers and a family atmosphere, kind of like the one they were sitting in.

“We came up with the concept of the

NightQuarter when we were sitting in an Italian piazza and having a few bottles of red,” says Ms Christoe. “We saw how people in Europe come together to enjoy food and listen to local music. Families … get dressed up and meet with their neighbours. We felt as an outdoor nation we don’t do this enough.

“I grew up on the northern beaches of Sydney. You grow up thinking that outdoors is how we live our lives in Australia, but at night

time we go home and watch Netflix and we’ve become this sedentary community, which is quite scary. We’re passionate about getting people away from TVs and phones and interacting as a community.

“We grew up with barbecues, when the local community got together down the paddock with a bonfire. We’re not seeing that anymore. People don’t know their neighbours anymore and things like NightQuarter and Malt Shovel Taphouse bring people together and you get to know people in the area.”

About five years ago, Ms Christoe and Mr Van der Woude realised their vision and opened NightQuarter at Helensvale on the Gold Coast. What was once an empty block opposite Helensvale train station became a thriving hub of entertainment and food, until a steep rise in rent forced it to close a year ago.

Their loss is our gain. This enterprising couple moved to Bokarina and have set about creating the same magic in Birtinya. On October 12 they opened Malt Shovel Taphouse and they’re set to open the much-anticipated NightQuarter in early 2020.

Ms Christoe has been doing this sort of thing for a long time. At the age of 19, she moved to Los Angeles and spent 12 years running a company that represented more than 60 lines of Australian produce, from beef and citrus, to fabric and wood flooring.

“I’ve done quite a lot in my colourful history,” she laughs.

“When I was in LA it was around the time of Crocodile Dundee, just when Australia was the flavour of the month. I represented Australian produce and products, getting them into high-end homes, food distributors, wine distributors. It was a pretty big deal, a big dream for me.”

Ms Christoe invested in bakeries when she returned to Australia. She has sat on boards for the horticultural and seafood industries and has been heavily involved in agribusiness throughout the duration of her working life.

“I guess I’m an industry advocate in that way, so when I met my husband – he comes from a pub background – we came together to come up with the concept of Malt Shovel, and opened up NightQuarter on the Gold Coast. That’s underneath our own company, Food Focus Australia.

“One thing my husband and I do is dream big. We’re big advocates for promoting Australian products.

“We’re passionate about incubating talent, hence the NightQuarter evolving into not just promoting chefs and quality produce, but spotting up-and-coming talent in the music industry, live arts and performance arts.”

Now that Malt Shovel Taphouse is up and running, Ms Christoe is focused on bringing the new incarnation of NightQuarter to life.

“We’re working with stallholders and finalising those.

“We’re here for the long term, we’re stepping it up in terms of the features across the site. There will be an enchanted garden, all-ages experiential areas, a range of food stalls, five bars, lots of music across the site.

“We’re supporting local producers, local chefs, local musicians and bringing in musicians from around the country. It’s more a venue than a market.”

Having moved to the Sunshine Coast at the beginning of the year, Ms Christoe and Mr Van der Woude have found their feet and are here to stay.

“My husband used to come here all the time as a kid and I used to come up as well,” Ms Christoe says.

“The progress has just been amazing and it’s quite an exciting vibe at the moment. What the Sunshine Coast offers that no other place offers is lifestyle. It’s a beautiful community to live in and we’re really enjoying living here.

“We are really excited to be opening NightQuarter and we have some exciting things planned for the community. I’m just a bit impatient; I want it to happen now.”

Need to unwind? You just can’t go past Fiji, where the locals’ relaxed attitudes are sure to rub off on you. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

T

he wind rushes through my hair and it flies freely behind me as my eyes soak in the view. Aquamarine tones, deep hues of blue and golden-tinged oranges blur together to create a living masterpiece as we zip past.

I grip the side rail as the cool ocean air lightly whips against my face.

My smile is wide, and I feel the urge to throw my head back, breathe deeply, and laugh with pure joy.

It has been 48 hours and already I can feel the weight of a year’s worth of stress and scrambling evaporating.

My speedy chauffeur brings our chariot – a white golf buggy – to a rolling stop and I

eagerly stride along a tree-lined boardwalk into CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La. A smiling woman ushers me through the reception room to an open villa where daybeds, the gentle sounds of trickling water and ocean views await.

I’m here for a traditional Fijian massage, which will be undertaken in one of the spa’s

signature ocean-view villas.

As I sink into the waiting daybed, I’m handed a small cup brimming with warm, aromatic tea. It is a delight for the senses and I’m told it is concocted from lemongrass leaves.

I express my gratitude and the spa’s clinician, Mary, extends an invitation into her village to pick my own leaves for brewing.

She tells me the plants have been grown by her ancestors for many years, and the tea-making method has been passed

TRAVEL down from generation to generation.

Passing on stories and welcoming people into their enveloping arms is a shared trait of the Fijian people. They speak with pride about their villages, their families, and their traditions.

Take Merelita, an artisan who I meet during our five-night stay at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa. She is grateful for life’s riches, and like most of the people we meet, she laughs at the idea of stress.

“Fijian people are happy. Fijians just want to talk. We don’t worry. If we don’t have food, we don’t have to worry. We serve God to be happy,’’ she says with a smile.

The mother of five has been selling her wares, alongside other creative men and women, from the Shangri-La for 10 years.

The money she makes enables her to send her children to school. Without the resort’s support of local communities, this would be a difficult task, she says.

It’s a story we hear frequently during our stay – the Fijian families are grateful for the Shangri-La’s community program.

At the neighbouring Yadua village later that day we are shown a brightly coloured kindergarten that was built with the help of the resort. Our family of three has been invited into the village and we are warmly greeted by Yadua’s official tour guide Livai, whose father is an elder, hence his own official role.

There are 120 homes housing 1000 people in the beachside Yadua.

Concrete and tin houses in bright blue, purple, pink and green overlook a grassed community space, and the staple of any Fijian village – a church – stands tall and proud at its centre.

As we walk through the village, small children peer from behind open doors and towering palm trees, giggling and whispering.

There are no toys in sight. Mostly, the children are running free. They laugh and play as their mothers smile their beautiful white smiles and hum gospel tunes as they hang washing, the aqua sea providing a heavenly backdrop.

Livai gapes in shock when we tell him that beachfront land as beautiful as this would

come with a hefty price tag in Australia. To his people, the ocean provides more than views.

A group of four pre-teen boys meanders towards us, armed with long poles and nets.

They are going to try their luck fishing the coral reef. If successful, they’ll bring their catch home to cook on coals in an outdoor, open kitchen shed.

We wind our way back to the hub of the village and settle on to a blue tarp under a corrugated iron structure. These open sheds are a common sight in the villages and our host tells us that they are erected for special meetings and ceremonies – with the blessing of the elders – and disassembled immediately after the event.

This afternoon, nine elders of the tribe are conducting a kava ceremony and we are invited to join their gathering – a huge honour. We drink the dirt-coloured water and share the gifts we have brought for the town’s children, drinking in the ‘no worries, no problems’ vibe of our hosts before heading back to our home base.

Despite its luxurious accommodations, the Shangri-La still maintains the beauty and culture the island and its villages are known for. This afternoon the sky is a rich tapestry of pink and gold and the refreshing water of the pool is the perfect place to watch the sun sink behind the ocean. Whoever coined the phrase ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’, must have been talking about this paradise.

FOODIE FIND Award-winning cider company Sunshine Coast Cider has officially opened its first commercial site, after growing its home-based business over two years. SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVER

Sami Muirhead says it’s the season to give to those less fortunate, so whether you can donate money, food or gifts, every little bit helps.

As Year 12 students across the Sunshine Coast leave their schools for the last time, Leigh Robshaw is feeling a mix of emotions.

re you starting to do your Christmas list and think about buying presents for your kids’ teachers?

While most of us are looking forward to the festive season, there is a really bleak side to Christmas and the end of school.

More kids on the Coast are going to school without food in their stomachs and missing the most basic personal hygiene steps. How truly sad is that? An alarming number of our kids are not able to brush their teeth or hair because they cannot afford the toiletries. Here. On the Coast.

Dianne Spencer is the community engagement coordinator for the Salvation Army. A big title for a lady with a big heart.

“We have initiated a school project to assist our local schools who have families known to the chaplains and guidance officers who need extra support and help with their basic daily needs,” says Di. “This year we are providing school needs and Christmas gifts as well as toiletries and towels that the schools can give to students who come to school with no shower, no brushing of teeth. We then give them things such as deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and soap and sanitary items.”

The Salvation Army stalwart is talking about the KMart Wishing Tree appeal. With three million Australians living under the poverty line, Christmas can be a stressful time. The appeal is on again to try to help

as many disadvantaged families as possible.

Money this year is also being donated to the bush fire appeal.

Ty Hassan is the boss at Maroochydore KMart and is proud to be supporting the appeal again this year. “There are people who are less fortunate than you and I and this gives us the chance to give. You can give as little as one dollar or pop a present under the tree,” says Ty. Sadly, more and more families locally are doing it tough. “We have a community barbecue every Monday night in Cotton Tree Park and it attracts anywhere between 20 to 70 people on a regular basis. Over 75 homeless people sleep in and around Maroochydore every night,” says Dianne.

“On our books alone we have over 180 families asking for help with their daily food needs. The appeal will help with Christmas gifts and food and also help with back-to-school items and toiletries.

“These numbers grow every day as more people struggle to make ends meet, as more and more people are becoming homeless and displaced due to domestic violence, injury, illness, job loss and relationship breakdowns.”

So if you can spare a few dollars or a little gift to go to a local child or a single mum or elderly person please give it to the appeal. You can do it online or take the kids to place the gift under the tree at KMart stores.

S rocker Alice Cooper’s song School’s Out perfectly captured the feeling of finishing school with the immortal lyrics: “school’s out for summer, school’s out forever”. It played on high rotation in my head as I saw videos of Mountain Creek State High students celebrating their last day of school by plunging into the waves at Mooloolaba Beach.

Seeing them celebrating, arms around each other, school shirts rebelliously torn open, brought a tear to my eye. Their faces shone with glee, as though the waves washed away the past 13 years of their lives and cleansed them, ready for the next stage.

I always well up a little seeing schoolleavers celebrate this important rite of passage, which can be imbued with a mix of emotions: relief, sadness, melancholy, excitement, fear. A massive chunk of their lives is over and it’s the end of an era. An era that starts when they can’t tie their own shoelaces and ends with them fully grown.

How we feel about school ending depends on so many factors: whether we liked our school, whether we got good grades or struggled, whether we had friends or were bullied, whether we stayed in the same school or had to move and make new friends. Whether we had teachers who inspired us or shouted at us.

Most of us had at least one teacher who went the extra mile to peer into our souls and work out who we really were and what

we really needed from them. Teachers who weren’t just going through the motions.

Teachers who genuinely cared. Those kinds of teachers can change a child’s life.

But school is not the be all and end all.

There are many pathways to success and getting good grades at school is just one of them. Personally, I’m more concerned with my children’s emotional and mental wellbeing at school than I am with how many As, Bs, Cs or Ds they get. To see my 14-year-old walk off happily to school each morning, knowing he truly belongs, is way more important to me than his report.

And I think this is why that last day of school makes me cry. That sense of belonging is going to change. When we go to school, it’s the first time in our lives we belong to a tribe outside our family and that tribe is going to break apart. Some may keep their school friends throughout life, but most will lose touch as they grow older and have families and see their own children start school. There’s a touch of sadness mixed in there with all that ecstasy.

And Alice Cooper was only half-right when he sang “school’s out forever”. Sure, they may not have to front up to the classrooms anymore, but school is never really out because we are all students in the school of life and the day we stop learning is a very sad day indeed.

Enjoy your moment Year 12s – you’ve earned it. But remember, finishing school is just the beginning.

urrimundi has made it onto a national property research group’s Top 10 Suburbs for Future Capital Growth.

The three-year forecast conducted across Australia revealed some of the top 10 areas could experience a median house price growth of up to 30 per cent.

The analysis by SuburbGrowth.com.au, which is part of the Select Residential Property Research Group (SRP), identified the top 10 suburbs within major markets. Currimundi sits at number seven on the list, with a predicted three-year forecast growth of 25.80

“The research highlights that each major region has suburbs with price potential, regardless of what the market cycle is doing at

the time,” Mr Sheppard says.

“These suburbs all have a number of desirable features, however, one of the main reasons why house prices are forecast to grow is an imbalance of demand to supply. The thing is, even if prices end up only climbing by half as much as predicted, such is the nature of forecasting, it’s still a great return on investment over a short period of time.”

The One Stop Shop, Spruikers acting as Property Experts selling overpriced properties.

You can see them coming if you know what you're looking for. Be aware, they are smooth talkers. Their aim is to create a trusting relationship, then they will pounce like a wild cat.

Once you like them and trust them, they will sometimes charge ongoing or upfront service or membership fees as part of a “Holistic Wealth Creation program” – I've seen amounts as much as up to $35,000 and even $50000 a year ongoing. They then get paid for each and every service that they provide to you. Some of these companies set up all manner of creative ways to get paid.
